Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Drivetime with Travis Wingfield.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
What is up Dolphins and welcome to the Draft Time Podcast.
I am your host, Travis Wingfield. And on today's show,
a fun week eleven variety show. Patrick Paul joins me
from Madrid. We are back at headquarters here in Miami Gardens.
He's gonna talk to me about the week that was
in Madrid and just getting their feet wet in a
new country and a new setting for an NFL football game. Plus,
(00:32):
we're gonna have Hugo Manaro, the president of the Miami
Dolphins fan club in Spain, and we'll go ahead and
sandwich that with the week eleven picks from the Baptist
Hill Studios inside the Baptist Health Training Complex.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
This is the Draft Time Podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
We are joined today by Dolphins left tackle Patrick Paul
and Pat. I am so excited to talk to you
today about this game, but mostly your experience out in Madrid.
Let's go ahead and start with that. You have had
a chance this week to kind of get out and
see this in.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
A little bit.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
What has been your just general take on these the
country of Spain, the city of Madrid, and being abroad
for a week.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Yeah, first, observation when getting here, the place is gorgeous.
I mean it's absolutely beautiful. And then when you're walking around,
there's like so much historic you know, buildings, and you
just have to take it all in. I mean, the
city's beautiful, the people are nice. I saw one hundred
and fifty foot Christmas tree. That thing was amazing lit up.
So it's been good. It's been real good.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Are you a big Christmas like decoration? Are you a
big Christmas guys?
Speaker 3 (01:30):
What sounds like?
Speaker 5 (01:30):
I love Christmas. I love Christmas, So it's been good.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Something to do it right over there.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
So you know, I know you went and saw the
Automotive Museum in Detroit with Tua and Brew anything similar
to that. You're getting you're getting involved in this week
or just kind of keeping it low key.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Kind of keeping it low key because this one's more business.
But you know, from what we're we have around, like
our hotel and stuff. I'll see as much as I can.
Maybe if I have some more time, I'll go see
some more places with my family. But as right now,
I mean, the city's beautiful, so that's kind of enough
for me.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
But yeah, all right, so you mentioned your family, I know,
your brother plays for the Commanders, and you guys have
had some time to hang out this week.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Yes, we have, Yes, we have. The first day when
we got here, me and him.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
As soon as he landed, I was like, okay, yes, sir,
so we linked up and then we went on the
whole tour.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
So that was who I'll see in the city with, honestly.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
So a little birdie told me that there was several
palls heading into the city for the game.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Is that true?
Speaker 2 (02:20):
How many polls are we expecting to descend upon the
Bernabau on Sunday?
Speaker 4 (02:24):
The whole Paul family will be there, so I'm prob
my two brothers and my mom and dad have a
whole bunch of cousins coming in from all sorts of places.
You got some coming from Japan, Nigeria, Dallas. So yeah,
we have a whole bunch of family coming in.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
It's gonna be good.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
You've got family spanned across the globe, like Dad, tell
me more about that please.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Ah. Yeah, I mean, you know, I'm a first nursing American,
so my whole family's originally from Nigeria. But as it goes,
you know, people will just end up in different spots.
So we're all going to congregate here in Spain.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Man, that's amazing. What a good little central location there
for you. Speaking of playing against your brother here, first
time you guys are going to match up. You're doing
it in historic Santiago. Burnabout you know, at Madrid, the
first ever game in Spain. Just tell us about how
special that all is. I know you're kind of an
introspective guy. I'm sure you've had time to reflect upon that.
Tell us about how special all of this is for you.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Honestly, it's like a once in a lifetime thing. To
be able to play my brother in itself is just
amazing and it's a blessing. But to be doing it
in Spain, and as you said, in such a historic place,
you can't write it better up.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
You can't write something better up than that. So it's
been great.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
You guys are kind of touring the Laaliga, you know,
powerhouses right now of the Spanish you know, Premier Soccer League,
and I know you guys have been working out with
the Athletico Madrid facilities. Tell us about that place and
how is it different compared to American sports facilities. You
have one of the best in the world here in
Miami gardens. What are you looking out there at Athletico Madrid.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
I mean, Athletico Madrid is beautiful.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
It's different than Miami in a lot of ways, like
the sizes of things, but it's amazing.
Speaker 5 (03:51):
I mean they did a great job here. I'm currently
looking around.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
It's great. I mean it's great. The field is a
little different compared to like football, but that's about it as.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
Far as that. It's great.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
They keep that pitch tight, right, it's really short grass
and it's different.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
It's different, but it makes sense for you know, soccer
and that football.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah, yeah, it makes perfect sense. Are you a soccer
fan at all?
Speaker 4 (04:13):
When I was younger, I was into it, but as
I got older, I kind of got more into what
you know, baseball, basketball, football.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah. Sure, But I'm sure some of the family is though,
right to talk about span the whole globe. I'm sure
a lot of the Patrick or a lot of the
Paul family is into the game. Right.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
Oh yeah, my cousins all of that, they're all into soccer.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
So what has there been like a crazy text or
a phone call you've gotten about, Like, I can't believe
you're playing at the Santiago bernabout like, that's that's a huge,
like a very very historic stadium. Have you heard many
of the family about playing in that building.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Yes, yeah, the family definitely texted me. But the one
that caught my eye was me and my brother's O
line coach from high school. He actually texted us saying
about that, So that one was crazy.
Speaker 5 (04:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
A couple more questions here about just the country and
the experience so far. So one of my favorite things
about these games is exposure to new media, right, Like
I remember there was a u K reporter who asked
McDaniel about something about the offensive scheme and he's like, oh,
you watch our tape Like it was it was cool
to see that someone oversees was so and you know,
and great ingratiated. I should say, easy for me to
(05:11):
say into the game of football. Have you had any
unique media experiences? What's that whole process been like for you?
Speaker 5 (05:17):
It's been good.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Yesterday someone did ask me about the offensive scheme and
how it was as an offensive lineman, and I'm like, what.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
Do you know about that? You know about that?
Speaker 4 (05:26):
So it definitely threw me off and I was like, okay, okay, yeah,
he's well versed. So yeah, I mean it's definitely interesting,
you know, being all the way across here in Europe
and people knowing about that.
Speaker 5 (05:37):
So I mean it's great.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Okay, Pat, I had one football question for you and
you just kind of led me into it, so I'm
gonna go to that.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
We'll come back to the Madrid stuff here real quick.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
I think my favorite play that we run is the
CT counter, And I'm curious how giddy you and Brew
must get when Tua comes to the huddle and calls
it out and you know you're gonna get a chance
to lead up hn in one of those gaps and
go hit somebody in space.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
How to you when you hear a CT counter?
Speaker 5 (06:01):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
I love to play anytime I get the space, and
especially with Brew.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Yeah, it's lights out, so I mean, and the play
has been very successful for us, so I really enjoy it.
Anything where I can get out in space and show
my athleticism, I'll do it. So that's been great.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
I mean, like watching watching the film, man, it's like,
you know, people get excited about like the eligibles and
touching the football. I'm like, I want to see Brew
and Paul out in space hitting guys and knocking into
the ground because that it's like my fair thing to
watch the entire tape, and from the look at your face,
it sounds like it's yours as well.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
I love it. I mean I love it. I can't
hate it.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Yeah, that's amazing.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Speaking of brew so I saw they tweeted out that,
you know they the Protector of the Year is a
brand new award this year, and he was one of
the four guys that included in the idea there or
in the in the tweet. I'm curious to get your
perspective on Aaron Brewer and what he's meant to this team,
your captain of the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
How good he's been this year?
Speaker 5 (06:52):
Lights out?
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Lights out, that's the phrase, lights out, Aaron brewsman, lights out.
There's not a center in the NFL that's better than him,
and and I stamped at the tape doesn't lie and
it shows it. So do I have him as Protected
of the Year, Yes, I do so. I mean, if
he's on that graphic, it makes sense I would have
put just him on there, so you know, yeah, lights
out that center one right there.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Yeah, he's been building for two years here in this position,
I think he's the best in the league myself. Back
to a quick question here, so, whether it's trying to
learn the language, trying some new food tour response, take
us home, got about a minute left here, take us home.
On the general experience of my dream, what's been your
favorite part about the whole trip so far?
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Favorite part, honestly is I like historic buildings, Like that's
my kind of thing. Just looking at the architectural like
design of them. Yeah, I like stuff like that, so honestly,
just sight seeing those buildings and seeing how they were made,
you know, even them being made such a long time ago,
they're timeless. So stuff like that catches my The food
is great, amazing. The chips they're not the same color
(07:53):
as the ones in the US. That's also different. I
had some ham flavored chips that were really good. But
I love Madrid. The people are amazing. The weather's great here,
it's not humid, it's different.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Man, it sounds like you're getting fully immersed in the
Spanish experience over there.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Sounds like a great time, and we're jealous.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
I hope you guys can enjoy the rest of the
weekend and get a big dub on Sunday man, congrats
on all your success so far and best of luck
Sunday and travel home safely. And there goes big Pat.
Let's go ahead and take our first break right there.
Come back on the other side and pick the week
eleven games in the National Football League. That's next Draft
Time podcast, brought to you by Auto Nation. Week eleven
(08:34):
in the National Football League is here. The Dolphins will
be off in week twelve, and then we're onto Thanksgiving week,
which is to me, when the sports calendar is at
its absolute peak, you get like massive college rivalries, or
at least she used to. The Apple Cup is played
in like September nowadays, which is completely dumb to me.
But that's the deterioration of college football as a fun
(08:57):
sport to watch for me outside of scouting prospects.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
But anyway, you still get a bunch of big games.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
You pivot into conference championship weekend shortly thereafter, you get
multiple NFL games across multiple days, and that begins to
ramp up as the college heason winds down. You get
Saturday kickoffs in the National Football League. It's truly the
best time of year, especially when you have a five
year old, a soon to be three year old, and
a five month old who cannot wait for Christmas, So
(09:23):
it's my favorite time of year. I actually went a
little bit without really being a fan of the holidays.
Those of you that know my backstory, not a lot
of family in my life, so I kind of had
to make my own family to enjoy the holidays once again.
And we are back in that position, and I'm very
very happy this time of year. And with that, let's
go ahead and dive into the week eleven picks. Not
(09:45):
a good week last week, not at all. We uh,
I'm looking at my notes. Sorry, we're down to sixty
nine point six percent. Nice, right, but not really that nice.
We're one O three forty five and one. I think
it was nine and five last week. Let's pull up
that real quick, Travis. Put it in your actual show notes, man, Yeah,
(10:08):
nine and five last week.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
The freaking primetime games.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
Man.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
I had Pittsburgh over the Chargers.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
I had the Packers over the Eagles, lost both of those,
the Bucks over the over, the Patriots lost that one, obviously,
lost the Dolphins game over the Bills, and I lost
Carolina over the Saints.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Not a great week this week.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
I don't feel great about this one either, but we're
gonna go ahead and try cue the music and tap
into some victories here. As we took the Patriots over
the Jets on TNF, quite frankly, I didn't have a
rooting interest. I kind of feel like if we and
my interest now is back in the hands of get
to the Bucks game, get to the Bengals game, get
to the to the Steelers game, back in the mix,
(10:47):
get back to six seven back in the mix there,
and win a couple of primetime games against the Steelers
and Bengals. Then we'll see what happens. That's what I
want to happen. The rest of the way, will it,
I don't know what we shall see. And with that
in mind, you're gonna need a collapse from somebody. We'll
get into this next week on the show. But you're
gonna need Buffalo to fall fall off the face of
the earth. You're gonna need maybe Kansas City, who's five
(11:09):
and four, to fall back. The Texans are gonna have
to lose games, the Steelers are gonna have to lose
more games.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
You're gonna have to get a lot of help.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
And one of the things I think could help the
Dolphins if this all were to play out in our
favor is the Patriots running away with the AFC East
and possibly going into Week seventeen without the need to
play Drake May So maybe if you know, if you
can find the wins I'm talking about, go beat the
Bucks at home, and then you play who the hell's
(11:36):
their backup?
Speaker 3 (11:37):
They treated Joe Milton.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
I don't even know who their backup is, but you're
gonna if you play him week eighteen. Maybe that's the
recipe of the path to get back into this thing.
So with that in mind, I hope the Patriots won.
I think although the Jets winning more games and taking
some drafts out at stock would be awesome to Either way,
you kind of lose lose game there maybe also kind
of a win win, depending how you look at it.
But we'll find out what the result of that game was.
(12:00):
I'll know it by the time you hear this podcast.
I'm taking the Dolphins over the Commanders in the early
early window on Sunday. You guys heard about that on
the Thursday podcast. I'm taking the Packers to bounce back
over the Giants.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
What's the deal? With the Green Bay.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
Packers, like that's a too good of a football team
to keep losing games the way they have been. They
had the Eagles dead to rights and they couldn't quite
finish the deal there on Monday. But I think they're
gonna get a get right game here against Jameis Winston
and the New York Giants, who will not have Jackson
Dart who had a fourth concussion evaluation in the game
last week in their loss too. Who they play affg
(12:33):
I can't remember the Texans over the Titans. Well, the
Titans win a game again this year, it kind of
feels like not. The only one they did win was
the absolute meltdown job by the Cardinals. I think the
Titans are going to get the first pick up draft
this year. They're not going to be Houston on Sunday.
I'll take the Falcons over the Panthers. I know the
Panthers stomped out the Falcons thirty a zip, but I
think Bryce Young once again, to me, is trending towards
(12:56):
not the solution there in Carolina, and I think Michael
Penix is trying towards that too. He does not look
sharp right now. He's got you know, he'll get another
year probably to prove himself there. But right now, not
liking what I'm seeing in Atlanta. But I'm taking to
beat the Panthers at home. I'll take the Vikings over
the Bears. Brian Flores' defense against Kayleb Williams is an
easy pick to me.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
We saw it in Week one.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
They shut them down outside of like one opening drive
for the Bears in that game. I'll take the Jaguars
over the Chargers, but I don't feel great about it
that Chargers offense is so banged up and goes through
so many drives where Herbert just like doesn't see it.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Herbert doesn't play in the quick game, right.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
He's really good off script, he's really good throwing tight
window throws down the field. He can put the ball
wherever he wants, whenever he wants. But the way you
get him is the quick game and heating him up
with pressure, taking away some of the long developing routes.
And I think Jacksonville can do that in this game.
With the banged up Chargers offensive line and lack of
running game, I think the Jags get right. After a
really tough loss against the Texans on Sunday. I'll take
(13:50):
the Bucks over the Bills. I don't feel great about
that one. The Bucks are pretty banged up, but Buffalo's
kind of searching for it right now. I think you
will get an inspired Buffalo team, so it would not
surprise me in the least to see them come out
of this game with a big victory over the Bucks,
who are still one of my favorite teams in the
entire NFL in terms of how good I think they
are despite all the injuries. But I think Josh Allen
should I flip this to Buffalo. I feel like I'm
(14:12):
kindling in that way. I'm taking the Bucks because I
want to happen, but I could easily see Buffalo winning
this game. I'm taking the Steelers over the Bengals. I
know the Bengals just beat them on Primetime a couple
weeks back, and Pittsburgh's offense looks not great and their
defense is up and down at best. Do they have
the corners to cover? I'm like questioning myself on these
(14:32):
picks mid segments. We'll go ahead and take the Steelers.
I'll take Rogers over Flack. Always go ahead and call
it that, and it'll be at home. In Pittsburgh there too,
So give me the Steelers over the Bengals. I'm taking
the Niners over the Cardinals. The Cardinals, I think it's
gonna be a rough second half of the season. I
don't even know who's playing quarterback for the Niners, but
I'm still taking them, whether it's Purty or mac Jones.
The Rams over the Seahawks in the game of the
year so far. I just think Matthew Stafford's on a
(14:54):
different level, even though Sam Donold's right behind him for
me as like the number two quarterback in the NFL
right now in terms of production and play style. Man,
the Rams they figured it out, man, They really went
through the reset process and just came out the other
side with a really good, young, inspired, hungry, dominant football team.
I have them taking the first early lead here and
(15:15):
what's going to be a fun NFC West race in
the AFC West. I'm taking the Chiefs over the Broncos
bow Knicks. You know, the breaking bad meme. He can't
keep getting away with this has not played good football
this year, and yet the Broncos are still eight and two.
They keep finding a way to steal games with four
and five fourth quarter defensive stops to give bow Knicks
five and six chances to go kick a field goal,
(15:36):
and eventually they do it because anyone pretty much cam.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
But I think the Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Will kind of get this division going back in the
right direction. What you needed if you wanted to find
a way to sneak in, in my opinion, was the
Broncos to lose any of those three or four games
they should have lost, and they won all of them.
So now you're going to be dealing with a Chargers
team that has an easy schedule, a Broncos team who
basically can only afford to like win two more games
if you're going to overtake them on the standings, and
(16:01):
the Chiefs, who at five and four, we know they're
going to win more games.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
So gonna be a tough way.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
To stop the AFC West from having three teams in
the playoffs, which would then leave just one more spot
for the wild card from the East, the North, and
the South, which that includes Buffalo, that includes Pittsburgh, that
would include Houston as kind of your top competition there,
So something to think about. As far as the Dolphins
trying to get back into this thing. I'm taking the
Ravens over the Browns. No, even if Lamar doesn't playoffs,
(16:27):
still taking that. I'll take the Lions over the Eagles.
The Eagles too feel like a bit of a house
of cards right now. I just don't think the offense
is good enough to compete with a team like Detroit,
even if their defense is playing good football and Jelen
Phillips gave them a boost. I'll take the Cowboys over
the Raiders on Monday Night football.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
What are we doing?
Speaker 5 (16:44):
Man?
Speaker 3 (16:44):
What are we doing with that game on Monday Night?
But that's the pick.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
There.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Those are the week eleven picks. Let's go ahead and
pause for our last break. Comeback on the other side
with Hugo Manaro, the president of the Dolphins Fan Club
in Spain. That's next Draft Time podcast, brought to you
by Auto Nation. Welcome back into the Baptist Hells to
use for a special edition of Dolphins HQ as I
am joined today by the president of the Dolphins Fan
(17:08):
Club in Spain, Hugo Monaro. And Hugo, the fans know
you from your appearance on the stage at the NFL
Draft when you announced our selection of Jordan Phillips back
in April Hugo. It's great to see you again, my friend.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
How are you doing, Hi, Travis, thank you for inviting me.
It's been an unbelievable journey for me long time ago,
since the Dolphins got the international marketing strategy in my
country in Spain. I hope it will not finish next
(17:41):
Sunday with the game at Santiago Bernabello. But I'm really
glad being part of this since I was a long
time Dolphin from the nineties and it's awesome for me
being part of of all this incredible journey.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
It's really cool to see now. I was you know,
we've we've done the show before together and I was
so excited to see you up on that stage announcing
the draft pick of Jordan Phillips. Can you talk to
us about that moment for a second. How did that
come to be and were you nervous? How did that
whole pit go down for you?
Speaker 1 (18:17):
I was really nervous because I go to Madrid, I
don't live in Madrid. And then in the in the
stage of the announcement, it was a really big producer
cameras and I got really nervous there because I was
(18:39):
there with my passion with my longtime love for the Dolphins,
and it was really quick. All was really quick. I
got the name and I had only twenty seconds to
repeat the name in my mind and live to the
war the peak.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
Well, you did a great job.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
We couldn't tell you were nervous, and the Dolphins did
you affair by taking a player with one of the
easier names to pronounce. It's not always that way when
those guys get their names called. So a little bit
of a break there for you. You mentioned the idea
or I guess, the fact of this game being played
at the Santiago Bernabeu, and I'm just curious to get
your take as someone that's you know, been I assume
you've been there before, to just tell us about what
(19:22):
you expect the atmosphere to be for an NFL game,
because now it goes crazy for the real Madrid games.
But what do you expect the atmosphere to be there
for an NFL game? Dolphins and Commanders.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Oh, it's such a big stadium, one of the biggest
of the war, and it's going to be a great
atmosphere there for for NFL games. It's a stadium where
the fans are really close to the to the players,
to the staff, to the to the to all that
(19:54):
happens on the field. You can feel, really really NI
are near? Are you?
Speaker 3 (20:00):
It's a.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
Loud the loud of the of the fans. I'm sure
the Dolphins player will fill on the stage.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
A little bit of a Super Bowl atmosphere in terms
of just the constant energy throughout the game. I hope
we hear some soccer style chanting and songs going on.
That's my favorite part about watching overseas soccer or footballs
you would call it in those overseas areas. But take
us through the excitement because I can hear your voice.
You talked about it before we got home, before we
got on the air. Here microphone just fell off the table.
(20:32):
That's not great. But take us through your excitement of
the announcement of this game and what it means to
you to see the Dolphins in your home country.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
I can describe it with Wars and it's like to
fill the Dolphins, the franchise I love and I support
A long time ago, feeling me, are you here in
your country? Coming to Spain, counting with the fans is
(21:01):
it was really important for me that the franchise always
and from the very first moment choose to interact with
with the Spanish fans. Jason Jenkins a long time ago
contacted me for doing all this stuff, and it's a
great opportunity for me that the Spanish audience increased their
(21:26):
love for the NFL and of course for our Miami Dolphins.
I hope all the Spanish fans became Dolphins fan because
I think we've got really close and we can connect.
For all the staff, the Miami the Sun, and I
(21:48):
only hoped that the Spanish fans increased their support and
their love for this amazing sport.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Well, yeah, I'm curious to hear about how you became
a Dolphins fan, because I know it didn't just happen recently.
So for your perspective, like maybe a little bit lucky
that you wound up getting the Dolphins in that Spanish market,
and like, I just think it's so cool that they're
going to be there for you, and they've they've you know,
put their flag there if you will to have such representation.
Speaker 3 (22:17):
How did you become a Dolphins fan? How long have
you been a Dolphins fan.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
I'm a Dolphin fan since nineteen ninety nine. I was
starting my college studies, I had to move on from
my city, from the city where I was born to
other city, and there I in that city, I live
(22:41):
with partners in a in a shared flat in a
started apartment, and then the apartment was always very loud.
It was in silent in the in the afternoon, and
I started to study at night. In in my breaks
when I was studying, I put on the TV and
(23:05):
I discovered it in an international channel, the NFL. I
didn't understand in those years anything about the sport. I
fell in love immediately with the sport because I practiced
martial arts in my childhood and the battle in the
(23:25):
trenches between the D line and the on line, it
was amazing for me. Then I realized I had to
choose one team to support, and in those years I
only know two names, Your Montana and a Marino. Marino
(23:47):
was in the last years of the career. I get
one photo of both of Then I saw your Montana.
I didn't like what I saw the jersey of the
forty nine ers, and I saw the Dan Marino's photo,
their carly hair, the number thirteen, the colors of the jake,
(24:13):
and I say, this is my team. From that to now,
I after I discovered a Sack Taylor, Jason Taylor, thak
Thomas sorry, my favorite Dolphins, when I became a member
Ricky Williams and until now.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Yeah, it's funny because you know, I know a few
Dolphins fans over in the UK and their story is
very similar. It's like the Armed Forces radio played games
and they listened to Dolphins games on the radio because
Dan Marino was so popular that they were always on
those stations. So Dan Marino, little did he know that
he was going to have a global influence in terms
of the Dolphins reach for the fan base. With that,
(25:00):
you guys developed, you know, the the Espania Fan Club,
and I'm curious tell us if you can about the
origins of the fan club and how much it's grown
from when you started to now with your I became
a Madrina.
Speaker 1 (25:12):
From farm and I am a Dolphins fan. I always
was very alone in my in my support here in Spain,
in Europe in those years, there isn't anybody who who
understand this game all the world, always asking me that's
(25:34):
rugby with a helmet and something something like that. And
when I discovered the social media, I could interact to
aid with other funds in my country, and I feel
the the net city. I had to create a Dolphin
Club to interact with AID when with other funds to
(25:59):
to make what parties in several cities of Spain, and
the growth has been unbelievable. Now we are about one
hundred sixty members in two years of growing our fun Glube.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
That's remarkable.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
That's a great number, one hundred and sixty fans in
an area, like you mentioned, not a lot of publicity
for that sport, at least over you know, before the
last couple of years of these international expansions. And one
of my favorite questions to ask Hugo a fan like yourself,
I had some German fans on back when we played
in Berlin a couple of years ago at NO Berlin. Yeah, sorry, wait,
(26:36):
we can change it. Wait where was it Frankfurt? Sorry
edit that up, but they wait a game in Frankfurt
and we had some German fans on. And I love
asking fans about their experience because for us, obviously a
one o'clock kickoff is right in the middle of the day.
For us, a four o'clock kickoff similar in the primetime
games at like eight twenty. It's all doable for the
American viewing audience because that's.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
Who they're targeting.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
But when you're you know, five hours times on a
head or six hours and you know the game start
at one o'clock in the morning. Sometimes I'm always fascinated
to hear how a fan like yourself, what's the game
they experience like for you, whether it's the one o'clock
kickoff local time here in the East or the night games.
Are you up all night watching Dolphins games when they're
playing primetime football?
Speaker 1 (27:16):
I always watch the Dolphins game live here in your
and I organize my day to the game. If I
have to to take a break in the afternoon, I
go to the web two hours and then in the
night at night I follow asleep to gain the party.
(27:41):
I prefer when the Dolphins play at one pm in
the afternoon there seven pm here in Spain because it's
better for me. But I always watch the Dolphins games live.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
You get any sleep when you watch those prime if
it's a if it's a Sunday night football game, are
you getting any sleep on Sunday night?
Speaker 3 (28:03):
Monday Morning's leep? A little sleep? Very leadal and I
go to work with, very.
Speaker 1 (28:13):
Very tired.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
Yeah, hopefully after a win most of the times in
those situations. I want to ask you this because again
the look on your face, the excitement about this game
coming up, I can just it's obvious how much it
means to you and how much passion there is about
seeing your team live in your home country.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
What's the game day going to be like for you?
Speaker 2 (28:28):
When when the Dolphins and Commanders kick off over there
in Madrid is it What's is it going to be
tailgating pregame events? Like? What's your plan for game day
when Dolphins and Commanders kick off here on Sunday?
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Well, on Sunday we are going to to make a
pre game party with other European fun clabs. And it's
really different here because the game starts at an hour
where we are usually eating or having our land. But
(29:03):
we are going to make a brand after pre game
and we are going to meet with other funds, the
Roman funds, the Britain funds and European funds and after
that we are going to go together to the to
the stadium. On Saturday, we are going to make an
international fun Glube meeting in the Erish Rover path and
(29:29):
days before we are going to to make a lot
of things here. It's going to be a great opportunity
for me to know and to meet other Spanish funds
that I don't know because they live in several points
of my country. And from Thursday I go to Madrid
(29:50):
to Sunday. It's going to be a dream for me.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
I'm so excited for you, Hugo, have the best time
out there. He is Hugo Manaro, the president of the
Dolphins Fan Club in Spain. Thank you so much for
your time and again, like seriously, soak it all in,
enjoy this moment because I know how much it means
to you. And again, Hugo, thanks for your time today,
so we appreciate it.
