Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time to get inside the Giants hut. Let's giant
the Giants bubbling, give me some jobs. Part of the
Giants podcast Network. Let's roll. Welcome to another edition of
the Giants Litle Podcast, brought to you by citizens Official
Bank of the Giants. I am John Schmelk. We head
over to the defensive side of the ball. We're gonna
start with the big boys inside. The Giants added a
(00:21):
lot of depth and backup and assistance to Dexter Lawrence
or Keim Nunez Rochez. The group is big this year,
a lot of players and a lot of size. So
I'm looking forward to talking to that group, the Giants
defensive tackles and interior defensive linemen. All right, now we're
joined by the man in the middle, Dexter Lawrence, the
centerpiece of this Giants defense. Next, how you doing?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Man? Doing good?
Speaker 1 (00:44):
So you haven't had many offseasons here with the Giants.
Where you headed into the off season having the rehabit injury.
How did that kind of go for you? Trying to
work your way back onto the field.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Right now, I'm still working on the injury. Uh, you know,
is hilling every day. It's a process obviously in uh,
you know, and and I hope to be ready by
training camp.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Has it been hard enough to try to put yourself
too fast to make sure it heals right? Because I'm
sure you're dying to be out there on the field.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Yeah, not really, not really. I know my body and
I listen.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
That's smart and in this part time in my career,
I know, you know it's right for me, and you
know's how I need to get come back and you know,
be me again.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
Why we Vetex or Lawrence? I like that. So what
do you think of the of the of the room.
It's you guys got a lot of talent in there, man,
a lot of really good players. So you're not out there,
you're watching them on tape. You're seeing what they're doing.
What do you see from this group that you're going
to be joining in not so short order?
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Well right now, you see you just see movements and
you see, you know, how guys retain information and no
paths yet, no paths yet. So it's hard to that's
so it's hard to see football players right at the moment.
But obviously you see guys athleticism, you know, how smart,
how they communicate in those different traits and other the
(02:00):
physical nature of the game, which is also a big,
a big part of the game.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
And we're going to see that in the summer obviously,
when when things get real, the physical nature of the thing.
How are the guys in the classroom learning talk to
each other?
Speaker 3 (02:11):
So that's so that's been the most impressive thing, just
seeing how guys you know, pour into each other and
guys you know, humble enough to listen and to want
to learn and want to grow and you know, to
be the best football player they can be, honestly, So
it's very good to see, you know, guys move and
learn and you know, talk and grow together and you know,
you know, real the camaraderie.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
How have you seen this defense evolve from year one
with Shane Bowl into your two.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I think, like, like I said that the communication is
much better. You know, guys understand the defense a little better.
You know, you got they brought in vets you know,
in the back end to you know, help you know,
you know, you know, mold the young guys into you know, better,
smarter players.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
So it's been looking good.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
So it seems like he could probably do a little
bit more right with more of those veteran voices on
the back, and combined with the edits out up front,
it seems like that opens up the playbook a little bit, right.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Uh, yeah, for sure.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
You know, obviously were just installing right now, but you know,
once you start game planning, that's where you get to
see the tricky stuff that gets put in or the
new stuff that he likes to he likes to do
during the week.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
I know we haven't seen Darius Alexander out there much yet,
but I'll a see about the bets that they brought
in were Robinson Harris, who's a gigantic human beer by
the way, you got led better. You brought in How
the new addition has been in the room.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Good?
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Uh. Obviously Roy just comes in with a lot of
experience and you know, he he he understands the game
in a different perspective than I understand the game, and
it's good to learn that from him, and you know.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
The girl from him.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
What do you think of Abdul Carter?
Speaker 3 (03:40):
I think he's I think right now, like I said,
his movement, he's very instinctive.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
He looks freaky.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
I'm excited to see.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
What he do.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
We put on these paths and Uh, I think I think, uh,
you know, I don't want to put anything on him,
but I think he's a good football player right now.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Final question. You've been part of some really good defenses here,
and you've been part of some defenses that have struggled
a little bit. What do you see this group looking
like when everything comes together with scheming players and everyone's
healthy on the field.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Yeah, I don't think there's a limit, honestly. And you
see the attitude of guys that that has that same
hunger that there's they shouldn't be a limit on us
and and and that's the and that's the biggest thing
in the attitude, dex.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
I appreciate you. Stop man, thank you, Thank you, brother.
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Man.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Now with Joe by Nachoo. What's up man?
Speaker 2 (04:22):
How are you? What's that big dog?
Speaker 1 (04:24):
I'm doing all right? How about you?
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Man? I'm doing great, man, Thank you for having.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Me, No, thanks for being here, sir. So dude. How
about this defensive line room, man, pretty good.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
It's looking awesome. I've been around some great d lines
and this one right here my top the cake.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Really what jumps out to you as to why you
think it might be special.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
I mean, you have so many people that dominated what
they do, destin Lawrence being such a great interior defensive tackle,
and then you have so much versatility on the outside
with TIBs and Burns, and then adding the young guy
Abdul is just so many things that you can plug
and play and you can get a lot of one
on ones.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
I feel like a good job for you to be
to loosen a duel up a little bit. He's he's
very serious, which I don't think it's a bad thing.
You want your defensive players to be a little bit mean,
you want to have a little edge to him. I
think that's good. But I think you'd be the perfect
guy to loosen him up a little bit.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
Oh yeah, for the first couple of days. I've never
seen him smile, to be honest with you, but I
must have did one thing one time and I seen
him just crack a little smile and I was like, Oh,
he does have humor, you know, But but uh nah,
he's all about his business, all about his work. I
respect it, but there's sometimes where you can kind of
get him the smirk. But nah, that's that's a guy
(05:38):
that's about his work.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Do you think he like when you think third overall,
peck right, you have a mental picture of what that
should look like. Does that dude look like what that
should look like.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
I'm being honest with you.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
After a couple of days of practice, I don't know
why he didn't go first overall.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Be honest with you.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
I've seen a lot of things and this guy has it.
He just knows how to win. I've never seen a
guy that just understand. I feel like he woke up
and just knew how to win. Granted he works hard,
he does everything, but something that he does is just special.
I haven't seen around a long time.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Wow, that's saying something. How about the veteran editions. I
want to ask you about those guys, the Roy Robertson
Harris is the leadbetters. What are those guys gonna bring
to the field there? And even Chelsea Golston, who's gonna
be all over the place on your line.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
And that's the thing.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
Like I know, we talked about the additional piece of
Abdul with the you know what we already have, But
when you think about Roy led the things that they
bring to this game, not only just being more en
forced with the run, but the versatility in the past.
Once again, you have tall, rangey motion guys ghosting don't
not only play outside, he could play inside. And you
(06:44):
have Roy that not only played in. He could play
tackle or he could play noos. Like the versatility with
the new guys as well. Like I don't like when
you have guys they only do one thing, so you
already know what they're doing. But when you have guys
and you don't know it's see my three is he
my end this? Now you have to think and then
you can put you know, mismatches or sometime you can
(07:05):
give other guys breaks because you have those guys that
they're the plug and play.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Are you seeing Shane Bowen be able to open up
the bag a little bit more?
Speaker 6 (07:14):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (07:14):
Yeah, and he's not afraid that all. He has been
putting in new defenses, new fronts, new schemes and coverage.
So I am eager to see what this comes together
in training camp and how do we do it at
full speed?
Speaker 1 (07:27):
And it seems like then you combine with the fact
that they add these two big veterans in the secondary, right,
you still have Bobby O in the middle. Like I
feel like you guys can really compliment each other pretty well.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
Yes, Russian coverage, I always working together. And you know,
last year not having the turnovers like we would want
in the interception portion, A lot of that came up
front and just not being aggressive with certain things and
just seeing that now coming together with the Russian coverage
and seeing our DB's getting their hands on balls, making
plays four interceptions a day five and you know what
(08:00):
I'm saying, Like, it doesn't just go on the quarterback
player things like that, it goes on the d line,
getting them off the spot, making them feel uncomfortable to
make those you know, I guess you would say untimed
routes or untimed decisions.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
So I'm gonna close it with this. Then it's gonna
be hard to do that if you don't stop the
run on first and second down. Correct Now, I think
you had some really good moments last year, your tackles
for losses, but there were some explosive runs that got
you a little bit. What does what do you guys
as a group have to do better to just overall
be better against the run?
Speaker 5 (08:30):
Uh, be honest with your A simple fit, just do
your job. The biggest thing. Last year sometimes you felt
like you had to do somebody else's job or compensate
because of lack you know, of trust and things like that.
So I feel like this year taking that step together
and believing in one another that hey, I'm gonna do
my part and you do your part.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Awesome.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
By the way, last year you joked every year they
tell you're playing three technice and a pointing those tackle.
You actually played three technical last year. Congratulation.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
Yeah, I appreciate you. And guess where I've been on
our camp.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
I wasn't good for it, wasn't good for that part
of I was trying to keep a positive dosh.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
It's one of them things, man, I enjoy Wherever you
need me.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
I'm gonna be you talk about you guys to do
more than one thing, right, Yes, sir?
Speaker 5 (09:14):
You fell into traffic, Yes, sir, so I know to
appreciate it because I am one.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Of I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Thank you appreciate it. You blessed.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
And now we're joined by giants rookie defensive lineman Darius
house In or Darius how are you, man?
Speaker 4 (09:27):
I'm doing wonderful. I'm blessed.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
So how has the NFL life been for you so far?
Kind of get used to being a pro.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
The NFL life is amazing.
Speaker 7 (09:34):
I'm out here with guys every day, the best of
the best, and we just enjoy each other having fun
every day.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
So I'm enjoying it. Happy to be here. Ken wait
to start.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
What are some of the things that you've learned from
some of the vets in the room so far to
kind of get you rolling a little bit.
Speaker 7 (09:46):
Some of the things I learned was just find your plan, uh,
find what you could do best, find that niche to
just work on that first, and then more importantly, have
yourself a daily plan of how you approach practice, how
you wake up in the morning, how you finish your day. Also,
you know some of the things right there that I've
been getting trying to hold it on. I think it's
going good right now.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
How about the mental stuff in the media room, like
how to watch tape, what to look for and things
of that nature.
Speaker 7 (10:06):
For me personally, I always been a big film guy,
so film not hard for me at all. It's easier
for me to go in there and watch film. So
just trying to add a little few things that they
throwing their paper book too, and then just added to.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
My what has it been like trying to learn this
scheme for the first time.
Speaker 7 (10:19):
It's not a first time scheme for me. I played
this in college as well. But for me, it's just
good to adjust to. You feel, mis's the different spots
that I play in that I didn't play it in college.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
I was per se.
Speaker 7 (10:29):
I play everywhere, for sure, but like just being in
a certain downs and situations at certain different spots is
what I'm adjusted to and I'm liking it.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
No, it's interesting, So what is is it? Like mirror image?
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Like?
Speaker 1 (10:39):
What is it terminology? What is it about the system
that is either similar or identical to what you did
in college?
Speaker 7 (10:46):
As far as like the play style some of the
plays that we run, I would definitely say it's similar,
and then the only thing that's different for me would
be the terminology. So it's a lot of different things
that we say that are different than what I use
it to lead.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
So the concepts of it's same, it's just the terminology. Yes, sir, awesome.
As you've out and going here and you're starting to
learn what it is to be a pro, what are
some of the goals you want to achieve? Even if
it's not I'm not looking for like numbers or benchmarks.
It's just things that you want to get through with
the end of your first year and say, all right,
I was able to check these couple of boxes.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
Just going out there and doing whatever I can to
help the team win.
Speaker 7 (11:15):
I think that's a big part of my checkbox that
I want to fulfill and if I could do that,
I'd be all right with that.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
What has it been like working with guys like Decks
and stuff like that in the defensive line room.
Speaker 7 (11:24):
Oh, it's been wonderful, especially with Dex and Nacho, two
veteran guys right there, let alone. Starting with Dex, that's
just a big human in himself, so just being able
to stand next him to see the things that he
could do at his side is crazy. And then Nacho
just be able to talk the game with him about
the different ups and downs that he went through as
the game as through a veteran and how he got
to where he is now. So I just take things
for both of those guys work ethic wise and what
(11:45):
they could do outside of football.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
No.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
Andre Patterson is a renowned defensive line coach, just been
doing a very long time, and he's even when he
dexter Lawrence as good to see as Patterson gets here,
he takes a big jump. Right. What are some of
the things that you're learning from him that you think
is going to make you a better football?
Speaker 7 (12:01):
Just hold of my technique. It is a technique that
he's teaching us, and it's a new technique for me.
So I never played before, So just getting adjusted to that,
and I'm actually finding myself very comfortable. I for like,
it's the best technique for me to excel at this level,
and I'm going to use it. And I love a
coach dre teaching. A wonderful guy, a higher energy guy.
He mostly laid back and chill, but when he gets going,
he got that fired with it.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
How is the technique different than what you did before?
Speaker 7 (12:23):
Just as far as like the footwork and stuff, just
being able to take certain steps short area steps, not
taking two elongated steps, and then just matching my hands
with my feet and things like that.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
So just getting adjusted to those things, and I think
it'd be very great for me.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
And obviously there's no pass in the spring, you are
you pumped to kind of get the pads on. When
when the summer comes in the full contact.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
I can't wait. I'm definitely ready to get to it.
Speaker 7 (12:46):
We also have an opportunity to go against other teams
throughout the first few weeks, so I can't wait to
get to that.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
I'm ready.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
We can't wait to see it. Darius, good stuff that
appreciate it. Thank you, thank you very much, Yes, sir.

Speaker 6 (13:08):
If you're lined up here, you gotta go over the
middle with at the score right.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
How do we make that happen?
Speaker 6 (13:15):
I don't know, but Citizens does. It makes sense of
your money with Citizens Official Bank of Eli Manning.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
And now we're joined by Giants defensive lineman Jar Matt
Love Better, Jeremiah. What's going on?
Speaker 6 (13:25):
Man?
Speaker 2 (13:26):
How are you doing? Good? Man?
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Go good you knowing?
Speaker 1 (13:28):
It's good to see you. Guys have a very crowded
defensive line room with a lot of very talented people. Sir,
how do you see yourself fitting in terms of how
they're gonna use you in that group.
Speaker 8 (13:35):
I see myself fitting in however they want me to.
Whatever position they want me to play, that's either that's
nose three, even defensive ends. So wherever they want me
to play, that's why I play it.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Do you have a spot where you think you're the
most productive.
Speaker 9 (13:48):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (13:50):
I would say.
Speaker 8 (13:53):
Three technique, but it's football at this point. Wherever you
put me, I gotta make my play.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
So and it's funny like defenses. Now, it used to
be all right, well this is a four to three,
this is the three four. Everyone's so variable Now it's
like on any given play you could be playing any
technique in and on or even front right exactly.
Speaker 8 (14:09):
So, yeah, as you were saying today, the game as
of all to where you have multiple different fronts and
you need guys that can play multiple different positions. So
I feel like that's an advantage for me. So, you know,
whatever the Giants need, that's what I'll do.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
What has it been like trying to learn Shane Bones defense?
Speaker 7 (14:23):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (14:23):
You know, it hasn't been hasn't been tough.
Speaker 8 (14:25):
You know, I've been the league going on my ninth
year in loud and I've seen a lot of playbooks,
seeing a lot of plays and uh, it's just the
terminology that changes.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
But other than that, football is football.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Have you set out any specific goals or things you
want to achieve this year? Heading to the Giants with the.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
First time, I just want the Giants to win?
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Is one to win?
Speaker 8 (14:41):
Is it win every game? We can one game at
a time, So as that's it.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
How much has that changed for you over the course
of your career? Where now the first thing out of
your mouth before I even started to finish the question,
You're like, win, yeah, Winah? Is that different than maybe
it was for you like six seven years ago when
you first getting started.
Speaker 8 (14:56):
It was you know, as a young guy coming and
you got your little personal go that you want to
achieve the accolades, But at the end of the at
the end of the day, football is about winning and
that's what we're in this game to do.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
So as you get older, you.
Speaker 8 (15:09):
Like you can have those accolades, but it's all about
winning for me.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
For Giant fans that maybe haven't seen you play a ton,
how would you describe your game and your power?
Speaker 10 (15:17):
Guy?
Speaker 1 (15:17):
You can use your length, your quickness like they expect
from me on SiGe, I.
Speaker 8 (15:20):
Say, I'm a little bit of both, uh, knowing when
to use it, knowing that when to use your speed,
when you use your power. So you'll see a little
bit a bit of both on game days. Just trying
to use member versatility and be productive.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
Good stuff at the time to share you. Thank you
very much. And now we're joined by what are the
new members of New York Football Giants? Defensive woman? Where
Roberts and Ha? How are you man?
Speaker 2 (15:40):
How you doing?
Speaker 4 (15:40):
Man?
Speaker 2 (15:40):
It's good to see guys.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
It's good to see you again. We spoke when you
first got here, which I'm sure was a row win.
Now you've had a chance to be here for a
little bit and learn the defense. So what has it
been like trying to figure out what Chamber and wants
from you guys?
Speaker 9 (15:51):
On? Oh man, this game has been good, learning all
the terminology and just learning my teammates all. All in all,
it has been pretty good, man, And it just feels
good getting back to football. You know, small in industries,
you know, we can't really do too much being ot
a's but you know, just warming up, getting ready for camp.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
Well, can you get out of OTAs You're obviously a
huge human being and you like to play physical football.
You can't do any of that, no, TA, So what
do you get out of the spring.
Speaker 9 (16:14):
It's just a technique, you know, working on my eyes,
in my hands, you know, make sure my footwork is right.
But just making sure I'm on point with the scheme man,
and making sure I'm just one hundred percent bought in
and making sure I know every everything that I need
to know prior to getting here for camp. And you know,
we don't have to learn things all over again.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
So I was talking to Andre Patterson and he's he
was very excited about you coming in here. He likes
to coach big guys that are long What has it
been like kind of learning from him As a guy
that's been coaching the defensive line in the NFL for
you know, thirty forty years.
Speaker 9 (16:47):
He's got a huge resume, and man, I'm excited to
play for him. Know the guys that he's coached in
the in the past, guys that I've played with on
different teams or just trained with in general, and they
say how great he is as a coach. It's gonna
be excited to get the play for him.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
This year.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
Now you've been in the league a while, is he
is he showing you some new stuff?
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Though?
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Are you learning some new things?
Speaker 2 (17:05):
You learn?
Speaker 9 (17:06):
You learn new stuff from every coach that you play for.
Some good stuff has been showing up for me. So, man,
I'm excited to play for him this year. It's gonna
be a good It's gonna be a good year.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
So we talked about when you got here all the
different spots you could play along the line. Where have
they where have you seen them kind of locking you
in on in terms of where you think you're gonna
get the most run here into this is a three technique.
Where do you think you're gonna get.
Speaker 9 (17:27):
I mean I've been I've been all across, man. You
know the more you could do in this league. So
I've been able to play the five nose tackle all
that stuff all across the board. You know wherever I
can fit in and you know, make the scheme work.
That's why I'm gonna be.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
So they've used you all along.
Speaker 9 (17:40):
All along the line, man, So it's gonna be exciting
to see how to how the year goes.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
What do you think of the room? You're in a
lot of very talented guys and that younger guys.
Speaker 9 (17:49):
This whole team is very talented, a lot of young guys,
a lot of vetted guys. But it's a it's gonna
be a good it's gonna be a good year with
this team, our room specifically. Obviously, we got Decks, and
then we got Nacho, who's a great leader, and then
we got a lot of young talented guys. Chat Obviously
he had a you know, he came in last year
as a rookie and did his thing. So it's gonna
(18:09):
be excited to play with those guys on the field
and just really take off this year.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
What do you like about Shane Bowen's scheme.
Speaker 9 (18:15):
Shane Man, Shane's running a scheme that's you're very exotic. Man,
It's different, different fronts. I'm not gonna get into all
of it, but man, it's gonna be h it's gonna
be interesting to see how we can how we can
take all these different approaches to you know, week the week.
Speaker 1 (18:30):
As a defensive line. And I'm sure you watched Dector
Lawrence from the outside and all very impressed watching my
tape he's on. What is it like being next to
him and seeing him do it close up on the Fildeah.
Speaker 9 (18:40):
Man, just learning a lot from Dex. Obviously he's all
pro guys, so whatever, he's whatever he's gonna tell you
want to listen and uh just be an open but
being sponged. But yeah, Dex is a great player, a
great person too.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Man.
Speaker 9 (18:52):
He's uh, he's very chill, but when it comes to
ball mane he's very passionate about it. He loves what
he does, and so it's good to get his much
knowledge as I can from decks.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Oh you'll see, once the pads come on and you
start playing in games, the flip from like jolly happy
decks flips to like super intense scary decks very very quickly.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
I mean, as I think that's most of us. Man.
Speaker 9 (19:12):
Yes, it's this time of year. We're just you know,
like I said, learning the technique and the scheme and
all that stuff. It's a little bit different when you
can't put pass on. So I mean, this is the
first time we put in paths on since since we
at least for me week seventeen, Week eighteen, I didn't
get to the playoffs, so uh so anyway, but yeah,
it's gonna be excited man.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Playing with those guys on the fit this year.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
I can't wait to see what I appreciate the time.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
Man, appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Thank you.
Speaker 6 (19:34):
If you want to know how to manage two minutes
of crunch time football, I'm your man. But if you're
wondering about a long term financial plan, you should talk
to Citizens.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
Hey, I can also talk long care.
Speaker 6 (19:43):
I'd like to learn about amiliar team. Yes, I knew
I could help make sense of your money with Citizens.
Speaker 1 (19:49):
And now we're joined by Giants defensive lineman Elijah Chapman. Elijah,
how we are you? Man?
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Oh?
Speaker 10 (19:53):
I'm great man, blessed, blessed to be in a position
to be on this football team.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
So you are the whirlwind of a rookie year.
Speaker 6 (20:00):
Man.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
You come in and then you figure out way to
get in. You're playing meaningful minutes. You have big moments
in the preseason when you have a chance to look
back at your rookie year, how do you kind of
encapsulate and what was that like for you?
Speaker 7 (20:12):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (20:12):
It was a blessing.
Speaker 10 (20:13):
Honestly, I feel like there's nothing that I could have
done myself to be put in that position the most high. Yeah,
he put me in position to make some plays and
to contribute to this team. So I'm more than more
than grateful for having that opportunity.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
Yeah, but you have to take advantage of opportunities, and
you certainly did. Why do you think you were able to,
especially look for a guy like you, undrafted free agent
you're trying to make the team, to make those big
plays in the summer. I think that that's what kind
of gets the ball rolling for you. Why were you
able to kind of make those impact plays and a
lot of them were just you know, hustle plays, what
hard plays that you're able to make, your make your
(20:53):
mark early that allows you to kind of stick on
the roster.
Speaker 10 (20:58):
I would say mostly my faith, my faith in God. Honestly,
I put my faith in him and I just give
it my all and things just come out of that.
I don't know how to explain how those things come
out of that, but they just happened. And I just
so happened to be in position to make place. And
(21:19):
you know, I basically I couldn't do any of this
by myself, you know, absolutely, And.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
You have a lot of help here too. Right, I
was talking to your defensive line coach Andre Patterson, right,
and I asked him, who's the strongest kind of the
defensive line? And I was expecting Dexter Lawrence to be
the answer. You can tell me Dexter Lawrence. He told
me Elijah Chapman that was his answer and smiles. Okay,
if you put yourself next to Dexter Lawrence in the
line up, someone told me that Dexter Lawrence wasn't a stronger.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
Guy, I'd like tell you talking about it.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
Yeah, so how in your compact body, how how have
you been able to develop that sort of strength whereas
a rookie, Andre Patterson has been the coach genre this
Guys Coach Hall of Famers. Since you're the strongest guy
in the defensive line.
Speaker 10 (22:05):
You know, I just honestly, I've been I've been just
lifting heavy my whole life. I kind of in high school,
I kind of figured that I wouldn't be as big
as the other guy, so I had to do something
to compensate for that, and being the strongest was one
of the things that I was able to do. So
so I did try my best to be the strongest
(22:25):
everywhere I went, and I ended up here and I
try to be the strongest here as well.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
And it's gone. Well, not the tallest guy in the world.
Does that help you as a defensive tackle.
Speaker 10 (22:37):
Yeah, honestly, he's built in leverage. So the whole goal
of offensive lineman is to get underneath your paths. And
I'm already lower, plus I have I get to get
even lower in my stances and when I'm engaging with them,
so I have built in leverage so they can't get
(22:58):
underneath me, and that gives me somewhat of an advantage.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
Yeah, as you head into your second year, now, what
kind of goals or the plans that you have this
offseason areas that you want to improve in and get
better at heading into your second year.
Speaker 10 (23:12):
One of the things that I saw last year on
film was my finishing. It was a lot of times
where I got in position to make a play or
to get off of an offensive lineman and I just
didn't finish. So a big emphasis that I would have
on this year is finishing at the top of my
rushes and contributing the best I can to the defense
(23:32):
as a whole.
Speaker 1 (23:33):
A Loijah, good stuff, man, I appreciate you, good luck
this year. Appreciate you all right, and now we're joined
by giants. Defensive lineman DJ Davidson DJ. What's that man
I Wearre.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
You doing good? Doing good?
Speaker 1 (23:42):
So tell me what your goals are heading into this year.
What do you try to work on, What do you
try to get better at.
Speaker 11 (23:46):
My main goal is really just my mental game, just
to keep talking to myself. I believe like I have
all the physical abilities to play in this league, and
I just have to just lock in on my mental
and that's about it.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
Really.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
When you say mental, you talking about mister Simon's or
is the more just being focused in to take your
technique wise, you're doing everything right on every play.
Speaker 11 (24:09):
No, just talking to myself, like you know, like make
sure there's no doubt in my mind, make sure that
playing with confidence. Yeah, just playing with confidence. That's that's
all it is and nothing more than that.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
Like so and boy, you guys have a lot of
talent in that defensive line. Yeah, like to talk about
what the dynamic in that room is, like how you
guys communicate and how you work off of each other
a little bit.
Speaker 11 (24:29):
Yeah, I mean I haven't personally been able to do
any training camp, so I haven't physically been out there
with a few of the new guys in the room.
Just I mean, I'm in meetings all the time, watching
the film and the tape with them, and everybody seems
like they're communicating out there the gain line up, how
they're supposed to line up. Everyone feels like they can
talk to each other, they can trust each other to
be in that certain gap so they can do their
(24:49):
job better.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
So yeah, I think everything. Everyone's a good group.
Speaker 11 (24:53):
A lot of really diverse, really good young men and
older men too. Good vets in the room like let
and Roy were added, and then DA's added real young
and and uh just like ready to go.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
So yeah, how's the process been going for you think
if you get to go training camp you'll be.
Speaker 11 (25:09):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll I'll be ready to go
training camp. Recovery is going good, shoulders, shoulders going really good.
Strength is coming back, Explosiveness is coming back. I was
able to hit the slid, all that kind of stuff,
do all my individual drills, all that kind of stuff
with basic fundamentals without the contact part.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
But other than that, I feel great.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
That's great DJ awesome stuff.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
Man.
Speaker 1 (25:32):
I appreciate the time. Man, appreciate you. Those are the
guys inside. It'll be very interesting to see how Shane
Bowen Brian Dable figure out what the playtime percentages, what
the rotation is going to look like, what positions those
guys are going to be playing, what situations certain guys
will be on the field in first down, third down, pass, rush, run, stop,
goal line, et cetera. It should be a lot of
(25:52):
fun to see how they sort all that out. That's
what the timing out for the Giants. Little podcast brought
to you by Citizens, the official bank of the Giants.
Thanks for being with us. We'll see you next episode.
