Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time to get inside the Giants. Let's go. Let's
go get the Giants bubbling, give me some joke.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Part of the Giants Podcast Network, Let's roll. Welcome to
another edition of the Giants Little Podcast, brought to you
by Citizens, the official bank of the Giants. We're in
the Hackensack and Briney Health Podcast Studio, Keep getting Better.
Joined by front of the program. Hello. One of the
guys that helped kind of make this program what it is,
the one and only Jeff Figles. Mister Jeff Figeles, how are.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
You, hello, Johnny good so to everybody, so thanks for
having me, having me on.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
I like the time stamp because this is not gonna
air probably even this week. It's gonna air soon. But
this is the first day camp and Jeff Feagles this year,
he's gonna sign the autographs. When I drove in, I
saw the line of people like I think it will
go all the way to the stadium. When I got here.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Listen, you gotta start off to reach you. You gotta
start off training camp right and bring the biggest stars
out at the beginning. So they brought the punter and
they did so we figured that that's gonna get things going,
and it's a good thing.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
So if I give you a ball and I sent
you out to the practice field right now, how four
could you punt it?
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Not very far? Yeah, just because you know, I got
my knee replaced three years ago, so that that would
that would not be a problem as far as the uh,
you know, as far as it's hurting or anything.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
But you know, think you'd have like one good one
in you before you like fill down.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
You know that we do these fantasy football things over
at the stadium, and they have the balls that they
use over there a little bit softer than the normal ones,
and so I tried to kick those around a little bit,
but it's uh yeah, not it wouldn't be very pretty.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
I have to make sure I tell the people up
in marketing to bring the caballs over next time.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
I want no part of the caballs. Leave the caballs
away from it.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
I kind of compared it to like old timers day
with baseball, Like, you know, can those guys come back
and play? Can they hit? Can they throw? Some of them? Can?
Some of them can't. I wouldn't be that good at.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
You know, apparently, And I'm not sure if it if
it's changed this year, and I'm sure Yankee fans will
yell me for not knowing this. I'm so locking in the
football guys. I'm sorry. So Jeter apparently kind of like
Xnade the whole, like old timers they gain, really is
he like was apparently worried about playing and like not
looking very good. So he kind of I think put
the kibosh on that a little bit, and I think
(02:02):
he was getting pressure a little bit.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
I was like, that's a shame, because I'm sure that
a lot of people would have loved to see that.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Well, you go back in the day like this is
before I was a little bit before I started going.
I started going probably like late eighties, early nineties, like
Dmaggio and Mantle would like show up and play in
those games and like why do you ford with pitch
like it was serious business.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yeah, well, I just I think it's I think that's
part of that that he probably doesn't want to just
show that whatever. I still think Derek Jeter could probably
play some baseball. He looks pretty darn good. So I mean,
all timer, well, anyways, I couldn't.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
So, So Jeff, we're here first day of camp. How
much are you stole these days tracking what's going on
with the Giants, because I know you can't really get
away from it.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
No, I can't. I do as much as I can.
You know, the phone is great. You get a lot
of fees and stuff like that. So kind of followed
a little bit. But I think without being in the trenches,
if you will, you can kind of get the theme
of what's happening here with the team, and I think
it's a very important year. Are a lot of different reasons, uh.
I think that the division is very difficult to play in,
(03:07):
and I think when you look at all three of
the quarterbacks other than the Giants, they're all Pro Bowl quarterbacks.
They've got good offensive lines. They've got I mean, so
the Giants are up against a lot So for the
Giant team, I've been following in just kind of watching
what they've been doing on defense, which is pretty impressive.
I think that's probably going to be the one part
of the of the team this year that they depend on.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Do you like not being in the trenches as much?
Do you? Are you able to have more fun with
it and watching the games not knowing you don't have
to you know, talk about in a work after the
game you can actually, you know, crack open a cold
one and enjoy it a little bit. Or do you
miss being in the building and knowing exactly what's happening.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
I miss being in the building knowing what's going on.
It's you know, and being in the trenches because we
get a lot of information about stuff. So I've learned
to watch the game from a different perspective now, So
knowing that being a big fan of the team, knowing
a little bit more at least I think than some
people about the team, I now can look at it
(04:04):
on Sunday, like I go to the games and we
do that, you know, the the autographs and stuff, and
then I watched the game from a fans personally.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
You there pretty much for every home game, pretty well.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
I have season tickets, so I go, whether I'm not
working or not.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Do you really sit in the stands?
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Oh yeah tickets?
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yeah I didn't know that.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Yeah, yeah, it's actually one. So come by and when
we when we got those seats, I specifically wanted to
be on the visitor side, by the by the kicking net.
So that's where the.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Ore You serious, did you find out I don't know.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
That was years ago.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Did you really buy the tickets so you're near the
kicking net on the visitors sideline.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Fifteen years ago? That was That was my mindset. What
I've done, What I would have done it again? No,
I would have went somewhere else.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
But you could you know, there is something called seat relocation.
I could talk to the guys that you lunch with
every day and see if I could work on that
for you. Would you like to be on that.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
I'm in with a couple of my other buddies and okay, there,
they're fine. We're fine where we're at. It's actually, in fact,
you'll love this. John. To get to get to my seats,
I have to go right by the old stage that
we've spent so many years on that that MetLife interest.
I literally go right by the stage, down to the
left and up and my seats are right there. So
it's a very good in and out. The last few
(05:20):
years getting out has not been that bad because it's
actually people have left early. So we're hoping that I
want to get out with a lot of traffic this year.
Back to the team, and I think that you know
they're they're going to be challenged. For me as a fan,
this is from a fan perspective, what am I and
I keep people are always asking me, what do you
think about the team? What about the team? We always
just want about depth and compete And I think that
(05:42):
when I look at this team, I think it's been
built around this offseason. The defense is going to compete,
the offense is going to compete at a certain level.
But I think collectively, and one important thing about this
whole game, and John you know this and everybody should
know this, I think this team has to stay healthy
in order to get to the to the however many
wins they're going to get, because you know, it's the starters.
(06:03):
They've got a lot of good ones, and Anthony or
uh yeah, Thomas has got to be he needs to
come back. Andrew he needs to be the guy that
kind of fuels that offense again. And with him on
the field, you know, it's a big difference.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Yeah, And you know when you talk about the defense, Steaks,
does this kind of give you pings and reminders of
when you were here with the not the just the
quality of pass rushers, but the number of pass rushers
they I.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Think the number more than anything right. I mean, because
a lot of these teams have the pass rusher single year.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Like the Cowboys, like Michael Parsons the pass rusher.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
So you know, when you look at what the Giants drafted,
look at the experience that they have in here. They
can come from all over the place. You got multiple times.
So I think that's that's important. But yeah, when I
look at what the what the Eagles did last year
to the Chiefs was very reminiscent, reminiscent of what the
Giants did to the Patriots Super bowlsolutely and so, and
(07:01):
I know that I've got I've got to see Tom
quite a bit this offseason Coughlin, and I asked him,
you know, what do you do with this defensive line?
You got so many people, He said to me, all
four of them need to be on every every down.
Just play them every down. Let rush the passer, and
then this league that's what you got to do. And
look what the Eagles did. They rush the passer. Look
with the Giants did No. Seven. They rushed the passer.
(07:23):
So I think that's important.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Yeah, absolutely, And then you look at the offense. They
decide to move on from Daniel Jones, Russell Wilson now
in the building as the starughter, even from somebody that's
not on offense like you were. What difference does it
make in a locker room when you have somebody like
Russell Wilson come in that you know has seen it all,
you can trust to do the right thing on and
(07:46):
off the field, by the way, be a leader and
just kind of be that presence in the locker room
as somebody that's won a Super Bowl and either of
his bad years is still throwing twenty five touchdown passes
and only you know, eight nine interceptions.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
You know this as well as anybody. The dynamics of
the locker room is so important. When you look at
the age of the locker room, most if not all,
these guys in there know Russell Wilson growing up. So
these guys, in fact, I think behind the scenes a
lot of them would be like he was my favorite player,
you know. So they've seen this guy grow up, they've
(08:21):
seen him in the league. His leadership at that position
is paramount. No matter what team you're on, the quarterback
position requires leadership, and I think that Russell Wilson brings
that on and off the field. Like you said, so
that's important. You also got Jameis Winston behind him, who's
a veteran who players like, and you know, he's the
locker room guy. He's very you know, he's always charismatic,
(08:43):
he's happy, he's all kinds of stuff that's contagious. Then
you throw in the new guy and he gets to
now learn from two veterans, extreme veterans. I mean, Jameis
Winston's had a tenure in his NFL that's been a
little bit of rocky union. But Russell Wilson is the
guy he can look up to learn how to practice,
learn how to prepare, learn all the things that you
need to do as a football player, and get it
(09:05):
from a guy that's been there before. Super Bowl champion,
been to the Pro Bowl, done everything. I think he's
on the downside of his career and now he's going
to come in and try to prove that he still
has it and try to go win a championship. Houddle up,
get in here. If you're lined up here, you gotta
go over the middle with at the score great.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
How do we make that happen? I don't know, but
citizen does. It makes sense of your money with Citizens
Official Bank of Eli Manning, who's maybe one of the
new guys on this team, whether a veteran or a rookie,
that you're most excited to see out there, either a
practice or when they get the pads on you and
you go to your first game.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Defense. I want to see the pass rush. Yeah, I
think that's the biggest one. You want to see Carter
I do. And I feel like I want to see
where they're going to how they're going to use him,
that's most importantly. I think that because he's so athletic,
he'll be able to move around a little bit offensively.
I'm excited to see how Russell Wilson can bring a
(09:59):
dynamic to I think they're going to run the football
a little bit more this year.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
I agree action off that right.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
And and we haven't talked about the guy from me
a Shoe yet, So for people to know I'm from
Arizona and my family all still lives out there.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Are you a big camp Scataboo?
Speaker 1 (10:13):
So I think I just became a fan during this
during the Bowl game last year, watching him play in
that Bowl game was did you see? The game? Times
was ridiculous? And and I didn't know much about him.
My dad told me about him. My brother in law,
who's big, he's an A issue graduate, said you got
to see this kid play. And then when they the
Giants drafted him, I'm like, okay, this this this kid's
(10:34):
going to be an instant fan favorite.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
What do you like about him? Watching him?
Speaker 1 (10:37):
I just I like his grit. I like his hit.
You know what, He's been doubted all his life. He's small, Okay,
he's tough. So he's got a chip on his shoulder
and a guy that can compete and a guy that
wants something. And I think that he'll be on every
special team's play there is, so people will be able
to see him that way. But I also think the
offense is going to be designed to get him the football,
(10:58):
you know, five six, seven times a game, because he
can do it. He can make something happen. If I'm
an opposing team on the punt team and he's lined
up at the fullback or the upback position, I'm not rushing.
I'm just going to I'm gonna let the guy punt
in this watch number forty four make sure he doesn't.
Uh So I used to like the other forty four
you know, watching him too yeah, he was pretty good too,
(11:19):
So he's got big, big shoes to fill with that number.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
And similar mindset with the two guys. I think the
running style is different, but I think the mental.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Mental yeah, absolutely like a good point. I think they
they're they're yeah, absolutely very unique players. But I think
the fans are going to fall in love with him.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Well for the younger fans that that's a model Brad Show,
by the way, for the fans that maybe don't remember that,
it seems like not long ago for us. But if
you think about it, Jeff, if you're already in a while,
if you're an eighteen year old, you know you were like,
what three five when that was happening.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Well, I gradual graduate, I graduated in a night. I
was about to say, I graduated. I retired to No. Nine.
So we're in twenty five. It's been a while, so
it's been Yeah, he's uh, but these guys, you know again,
it's like the locker room when you look at some
of the age of these guys, know, I mean, I
could walk in here, nobody's gonna know who I am.
They're gonna probably think I'm a staff member upstairs, like.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
The mayor walking in here.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Yeah years ago, but I took the office. Was like
eight people, some of the newer players.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
It's okay, you and Christina reminiscent about Albany.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Oh yeah, there was fun. I kind of missed that.
I think that I think it would be a lot
of fun. I know it's a it's a big endeavor
to get up there, and I get the logistics of
it and the costs and stuff, but it's I still John,
you were up there to it. I just feel like
it's that's training camp.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
You know, only punters and when you're a former player,
no former player misses training camp unless you're a punter.
It isn't really training camp. Yeah, there's something wrong, but
annual tradition. I need you to tell the the Mike
Homeground training camp lunchline story, my favorite.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Oh yeah, it's about this time of the year, right,
so uh real quickly if anybody hasn't heard this story.
Obviously I'm a big golfer. And when we were up
in training camp and all see not Albay Cheney, uh Cheney, Washington,
which is were the Seahawks over in western Washington. Well, anyways,
long story short, I met an owner of the golf
course literally ten minutes from training camp. He gave us
(13:07):
the keys to a couple of golf carts and folly
and myself used to go out and play golf at
five thirty in the morning. Former big golfer. So anyways,
long story, we go out and play before we had
to be to practice. And uh, one day I came
into it's mandatory for breakfast, little lunch line, put my
(13:30):
tray down, grabbed my plate and silverware, but I had
my golf glove in the back of my on the
back of my pocket, and Homeron walks in behind me
and we're just walking through. I'm getting my breakfast holding
homern is six', five just a mountain of a man
and very. Intimidating. Uh and he just at the end
(13:52):
of the, line he just tapped me on the shoulder
and he dropped my golf glove on my tray and,
said uh in par. Or you, know so he was
he KNEW i was. BUSTED i was totally. BUSTED i
played off pretty. GOOD i, said, Oh i'll, coach you,
KNOW i JUST i. DROPPED i don't know WHAT i
said to, him but he, knew he. Knew he didn't
care it didn't. Care but and that was only on
(14:13):
DAYS i wasn't, practicing by the, way so but it
was my day. Off like, pictures pictures and punters are very.
Similar you, know we can only kick so, much so
we got to have that day. Off and when you
have that day, off you're gonna go play. Off and at,
LEAST i mean most people don't play golf during training.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
CAMP i.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Did so that's WHY i love training.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
CAMP i ended up at. All but when you did two,
DAYS i did two there.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Too used to go, swimming to go swimming.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
There, yeah was that only on the second practice to two?
Speaker 1 (14:39):
Days that was that was pretty much almost every day
BECAUSE i just tried to get out of practice every
morning BECAUSE i only punted once a. Day And Mike
sweatman was the special teams coach back in the, day
AND i asked him and he, said you know, What,
jeff with his deep, voice you do whatever you want to.
Do i'll take care of. It as long as you're working.
Out i'll talk To. Tom do you think he ever talked To.
Tom he never talked To, tom never until the day
(15:00):
That tom found out that he was looking for me
one morning and he, said where's Figels. At so he
went up to the coach sweaming and, said where's Figels?
At and And mike, said he's dead star Into coffin's,
eyes he's, swimming, coach talk about being thrown under the
bus big. Time he's, all go do what you, want,
Yeh i'll cover. You yeah. WHATEVER i came out of
(15:21):
the afternoon practice And tom was the first to meet.
Me how is your swim? Today did you have your
little little you, know your little ducky swimming around with.
You i'm, like, yeah it was. Good you are working, out.
Coach he, goes there better be a lifeguard. There he,
said life better be a lifeguard.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
THERE i think you were the. Ocean i'm my.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
Coach i'm a pretty good. Swimmer he's, LIKE i don't.
Care you never know just and then he said to, me,
no he, GOES i want to talk to you after.
Practice so we talked about my. SCHEDULE i said to,
HIM i, said, coach there's no reason for me to
be standing out here for two hours and then warning
WHEN i could be getting stuff done in the. POOL
i get my workout in this and. That what are
the other guys gonna say about? That i'm, like. Coach nobody.
(16:07):
Cares nobody. Does you're the only one that. NOTICED i
wasn't out. Here everybody else could care less Where Jeff
fiegel's is? That trust, Me we're. OKAY i don't. Know
i'm gonna have to think about. This it, Worked it was, fun.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
So he kept.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Slipping of, course it was part of my, Workout to
be honest with, YOU.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
I can honestly picture in my Head Tom coughlin making
the joke about the. Ducks it was well being being
so genuinely concerned that it would mess up the structure
and message he's trying to send to the, team and
him hundred really actually being concerned about, it because that's
(16:45):
what he. Was he was that detail.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Oriente d and he was so worried that somebody was
going to, notice like somebody's taking notes at everybody who's
out there every day or, not and they're gonna one
of the the press he was worried about the press
was gonna be like worst figels out is he hurt?
Speaker 2 (16:59):
You like videoed of Like Vidia trandy writing That Jeff
black's never out of?
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Practice what does he? Hurt you? Know so we kept
it under rats pretty, good but it actually was very
advantageous BECAUSE i still swim to this. Day it's a great.
Exercise and you, know back then when that was, HAPPENING
i was, still you, know having a little problems with my,
knees so we had to take care of, it all.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Right, well the final question about the. Team then we're
gonna play a little game.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Here oh, great, okay all.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
Right so the specialists they've been together for a while,
now which is. Crazy, Krider Jamie gillen And Graham. Gino,
yeah how does that help and give me a window
into What Graham gonod is dealing. With he's had a
couple of. Injuries he's kind of trying to work through.
Those he's on the older side for a. Kicker, now
just kind of give me an insight into those two.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Things, well first of, ALL i think that from a positional,
STANDPOINT i was gonna groove them all into the three
at the. Specialist, yeah you, know those guys can they
can remain together for a while if things work out.
Correctly and WHAT i mean by that is monetary, stuff you,
Know so those positions are they're very important, obviously but
they're also the ones that they're at the bottom of
(18:03):
the food chain that can usually kind of get replaced
by something else less. Expensive, however you can't substitute. Experience
so those three, guys you don't have to worry about. Them,
john they're season. Pros they know what they're gonna have
to do as you get, older which every one of them.
Are in the case Of Graham gono with. Injuries what
(18:26):
he's working, ON i promise you is the mental part of,
it because what happens is your body breaks down as
you start getting into your thirties into your, forties and
you have to find alternative methods to try to combat.
That and so mentally you want to be able to,
say you know, What i'm. STRONG i can go out
and work this, way BUT i can't do it LIKE
i was ten years. Ago So graham probably doing that
along with the other. Guys so to, me WHEN i
(18:48):
was in training camp at the AGE i was later
in my, CAREER i had to manage it and that
was all about what the. Swimming we we joke about,
it but the whole thing was that's what a guy
that's in his late thirties needs to do to train
a guy that's in his late. Twenties so it's all
about mental and trying to do things to keep your
body and the longevity to last a long season at.
Age what is he thirty? Five maybe thirty.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
Six, grammy we looked this, up. Pierced they have thirty, eight, Right.
GRAHAM i think last last time we looked it, Up
pierce was.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Before, yeah SO i mean it's he's in his mid
to late thirty soty thirty, Eight, yeah thirty. Eight if
you want to know how to manage two minutes of
crunch time, Football i'm your.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Man but if you're wondering about a long term financial.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
Plan you should talk to. Citizens, HEY i can also
talk long.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
Care i'd like to learn About amolli. Routine, YES i
KNEW i could help make sense of your money with.
Citizens all, Right so usually we play a game With
Jeff fiegeles called did you play With Jeff. Fiegles we're
not going to play that game, Today.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
DAMN i. WAS i was studying for that BECAUSE i
knew you were going to do.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
It Oh, No we're gonna play a much more fun
game Because piers are going to attest to this storing
our draft process this. Year how many Times pearson DID
i say into the camera, MAN i Wish Jeff fiagles
are here to try to pronounce the names of some
of These jeff process are.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
You know you know where to? Go smell so? Bad
but you know, What i'll, Okay i'm fine with. It,
Okay SO I i you, KNOW i like. MYSELF i had.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
TO i hope you like. YOURSELF i like.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
You i'm gonna hate myself after this is, over but go.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
AHEAD i mostly like to make you look. Silly so
this is what we're gonna. DO i didn't even write
the names. Down i'm literally you just had the draft list.
Here So i'm gonna show you my phone piercing you might,
add like a graphic with the name of each player
he's trying to PRONOUNCE i as we go. Here when
when when you do this at? Post so we're gonna
start off a little bit. Easy so it's gonna be
the name that's at the top of the, list all.
Right and this is what you're gonna have to pire.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
Figure to believe he's doing this to.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
Me, yeah, yeah of course he can number one at the,
