Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time to get inside the Giants. Let's go. Let's go.
Let's go Giants like I like it. Out of the
Giants bubble, give me some job.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Part of the Giants podcast network. Let's roll Coach Gobs.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
How we doing?

Speaker 3 (00:11):
Good man? How are you good?

Speaker 2 (00:12):
To see you again?

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Didn't see you too?

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Year two for you, my man? Yeah, this is exciting.
What's uh, what's been the biggest change for you being
here a year two now with the Giants?

Speaker 3 (00:23):
You know? Uh? I think number one is just having
a good feel for, you know, the way we do
things here with the Giants, in terms of scheduling, in
terms of meeting time, you know, and just really being
integrated in the organization for a full year allows you
to truly meet a ton of people, you know, a
ton of people that make this organization such a great

(00:45):
and unique program.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
So I feel like one of the challenges that spush
teams coaches have in the NFL is every year they're
changing rules. Right, So last year we talked about there
was a new kickoff rule.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
How is that a challenge for you as a coach
when you have new players, you have rookies, guys that
maybe haven't had to do it with these kind of rules,
How do you implement that? How does that change?

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Yeah, you know the first thing, it was a drastic
rule changed last year. You know, both fans, players, coaches,
everybody was you know, truly trying to figure this thing
out right from the jump. I mean, you talk about
the college players that are coming into this game. You know,
really none of our special teams plays really translate to
their level anymore. You know, it's a different punp play.
It's different punt return, different kickoff, different kickoff returns. So,

(01:35):
like you said, you know, truly teaching them the rules
and intricacies of this new kickoff kickoff return rule is critical,
but also just teaching them the fundamentals. You know, Like
I've said it before, but you know, special teams is
the purest form of football. Block destruction, block mechanics, vision ball,
key ball skills, all those things come up in this

(01:56):
play that you try and make it as seamless as
the process and in terms of you know, the challenges.
You know, obviously it's not a brand new rule, but
there has been some tweaks to the game. They made
the touch back the thirty five yard line, right, you know,
which is going to increase drive start average, and it's
also going to increase more returns, you know, so you know,

(02:17):
we're really excited to take this thing head on.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
So what did you learn about that new kickoff rule?
Now that you could go back and kind of watch
everything that you guys did last year and even what
other teams did in the league. I know it's a
copycat league, So how is that going to change the
way everybody's doing it this year?

Speaker 3 (02:35):
You know, the first thing is the speed in space
is still going to be pretty consistent. It's going to
be tight, and it's gonna be close quarters, which you know,
the blocking schemes that you're going to see are still
going to be somewhat new, having a different formation with
a third guy back there now. But at the same time,
you know, it is going to be a lot of

(02:56):
similarities from a year ago. So, you know, me and
my staff we've done a deep dive into you know,
returns in this league, the top returns block techniques, how
we can improve that from a coverage standpoint, you know,
how do you mirror up and marry everything together? You know,
so those things have been pretty consistent. That's something we've

(03:17):
been working on in ot as other players.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
So you guys are on the field, get it kind
of a chance to see some of the new guys, right, Yeah,
you know every year the roster there's turnover, there's change,
there's new blood, new bodies. How what what what does
that bring to the team?

Speaker 3 (03:34):
You know, it's you get guys from variety of different places,
whether they be from college, other organizations. You have guys
that were part of playoff teams last year, you know,
so just kind of seeing their personality start to shine
and start to impact some of the returning players as well.
You know, it is big. But the other thing is
like that, that's the that's the NFL. You know, your

(03:56):
roster is going to be ever evolving and there's gonna
be a lot of turnover every year. You know, fifty
percent of a roster is new, you know, so it's
going to feel new as it should. And this is
a new year. We're excited to get going.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
So for Giants fans, who are some of those new
players that they're going to see on special teams?

Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah, you have a guy like Chris Board who has
been a very active special teamer in this league, who's
played a lot of football and has also you know,
impacted the game in a high manner. You know, he's
been one of the top leading tacklers in terms of
special teams plays the last few years. You know, to
see his speed, see his physicality, see his range. Those

(04:32):
are all things that you know, I'm excited to showcase
and see him, see him show up. And then you
have other guys that have played a lot of ball
for us in the past year that were younger players
like Art Green, Bryce Ford Wheat and you know those
guys certainly are our guys that learned a ton from
last year and you know, hoping to take that next jump.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
People use the phrase flip the field a lot r Yeah,
that's the return game. So what are giants? What could
Giants fans see this year that may be different in
the return game?

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Yeah, well, I think everything's got to tie together, both
coverage and return phases. Because you talk about field position
being a silent assassin when you're punting, you know, from
the fifty yard line, being able to pin somebody inside
the ten yard line to where the defense is smelling
blood in the water, you know, keeping that offense backed up,
and then all of a sudden, your return unit takes

(05:22):
the field at the logo, they get the ball at
the logo, and all of a sudden we get an
explosive return to the thirty yard line. So truly playing
complimentary football from every phase I think is going to
be huge and something that you know, we've been dialed
in together, all right.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
So I got to ask you, Abdul Carter, Yeah, third
pig overall, have you asked him to do stuff? What
has that been like trying to figure out what he
can and can't do.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Abdul is an absolute competitor. That guy wants to help
this team and whatever fashion he can, you know. So
it's him and it's everybody on this team, whether you're
a veteran or rookie, doesn't matter where you got picked.
These guys are all all all on board in terms
of just helping us in whatever way we can. You know,
I think one of the biggest things during this offseason

(06:07):
program is we're not necessarily concerned with roles right now,
so we're teaching everybody all the fundamentals. But he's certainly
a guy that you know, has the speed athleticism to
do a lot for this football team.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
So the battery I was a backup long snapper throughout
my entire career, so I was I was a little
part of the battery. Take us through your battery, and
those guys are all coming back. So how does that help?

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Yeah, No, it's you know, one of the things when
you have specialists is.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
And the battery is the snapper, the whole, the ki kicker.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
No, absolutely, Like one of the things that you have
success in terms of specialists play when those guys truly
compliment one on one another, they truly get along with
one another, and they understand their little mannerisms in the
actual game. So seeing the ball, what the snap key is,
all those things are article for successive a specialist. So

(07:02):
when you have guys that all return, I think that
helps make that process going in the next year very seamless.
And you have guys that have been winning stars in
this league, you know like Graham Gno, Jamie Gillen and
Casey Krider, and then you have you know, a young
player and Jude mccapney who who has done a great
job and obviously has a lot of lake talent.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
So sometimes coaches will throw a bone, right, Hey, if
this lineman catches a punt, yeah, no conditioning. You got
to pick one lineman and he gets one punt to cash.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
Who are you choosing past or present.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
President?

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Okay, because I was gonna say past, it'd be you.
I mean, you're looking like a receiver right now.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
So I don't want I don't want that duty. I
don't want them running on my bath.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yeah, you know what I would have to say. Gosh,
that's a great question. I'm gonna go with JMS. He
seems like as versatile player. He's obviously athletic. You know,
I'd put my put my bet on him.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
All right, JMS? All right, so you trust the centers. Well,
I guess we do have our hand on the ball
more than any other absolutely, So maybe that's playing into account.
But yeah, let's let's hope. Uh, let's hope Dave's calls
on JMS and he can get him out of some running.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
And then then you're the hero and hopefully you're a
practice that he calls on you, and maybe it's a
competition between the two.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
Oh, that sounds good. I like it sound like a
good challenge. Challenge accepted the office.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
That's awesome, We'll go.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Thanks so much for the time. Man, appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Good luck you here, man.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Oh Steve, how are we doing?

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Man? I'm good? How about you?

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Your quarterback room is very new, very new. You got
three out of your four quarterbacks are new to the
system and new to the Giants. What's that been like?

Speaker 1 (09:17):
No, it's been fun.

Speaker 5 (09:19):
I've had a relationship with Russ going back to my
NC State days. He was there when oh wow, I
was there. I was a GA wolf back. Yeah, the
wolf back. Kind of reconnecting with him has been good.
We stayed in touch a little bit over the years.
You know, when he was in Seattle, and I was
at a couple of different spots just seeing them every

(09:40):
now and then, but getting them around around him more
has been good. Then Jamis getting to know him has
been fun. Jamis has a great personality, brings a lot
of really good things to the room, not just from
his personality but from his experience playing and then obviously

(10:02):
Jackson the last couple of weeks out in him, it's
been great.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
Whenever you have.

Speaker 5 (10:09):
One new guy in that room, you know you've got
to kind of teach them from the beginning and get
the system in. Having three guys, I would say adds
a layer to it, but a fun layer, a challenging layer,
and something that's kind of definitely kept me on my
toes in a good way of you just have to

(10:31):
be ready to go back and re explain a lot
of things that maybe you not miss previously, but you know,
you kind of get comfortable a little bit with some
things of things you've explained a million times.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
With three new guys in the room, you really got
to crush forever He's and dot your eyes with everything. Yeah, gotcha.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Yeah, Russell's been around now. I mean, so this is
you know, really his fourth offense. Now in probably four years,
what has it been like having him both in the
meeting room and on the field.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
It's been great.

Speaker 5 (11:06):
He brings obviously a guy that's played as long as
he has. I think this is his fourteenth year somewhere
around there, and the experiences he's had, he's able to
have a calmness about him with urgency, if that makes sense.
He knows what he wants to do, he has a

(11:27):
plan for everything, and I think he just does a
really good job of keeping a level head about him.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
Even though it's new to him.

Speaker 5 (11:39):
You wouldn't think it's new just by watching him out
there in the huddle at the line of scrimmage on
the sideline with the guys. He's fit right in from
that standpoint of being a veteran, and I would say
that's helped the other guys out, some of the younger
guys on our offense of watching him how he operates

(12:00):
and how they have to be on their stuff. For
a guy who had even though he hasn't been in
the offense, he's ready to do something at the line
of scrimmage or he's ready to make an adjustment really quick.
So I think that helps when your quarterback can handle
those things and do that stuff for the rest.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Of the offense.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Yeah. So now you've got a guy on the other
hand in Jackson Dart, who you got to know a
little bit throughout the draft process. What was that like
for you and at what point were you sold on
Jackson Dart, Like this is the guy that I want.

Speaker 5 (12:36):
Yeah, I'd say after we finished the whole process with everybody,
I think to be fair to everyone, you have to
go through everything, make it apples to apples, and really
at the end of it, we sat down and came
to a collective decision with everybody that Jackson was the guy,

(12:57):
just because from start to finish he did everything we
asked and really dominated our process. And I think after
we got back from the final trip or whatever it was,
the final pro day, he was the guy that always
kind of stood out. He prepared, he threw it well,

(13:18):
he checked off all the boxes that we asked those
guys to check off, and he just dominated the process,
which you know, we're looking for guys to dominate what
they can control, and that whole process really crystallizes there.
He dominated what he can control throughout that whole thing,

(13:39):
and it was what we were looking for.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
What did you see on game film that really got
you excited about possibly coaching a guy like that.

Speaker 5 (13:49):
I love his competitiveness and his toughness. I think the
biggest compliment you could give any player is that they're
a football player. And when you watch Jackson, the biggest
compliment I could give him is he's not just a quarterback.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
He's a football player.

Speaker 5 (14:05):
And you know, you know is playing on the offensive line,
that's probably who you want to play with at quarterback
is a football player. Yeah, So that was one of
the things that jumped off the screen to me, is
this guy is not just a quarterback. He's a football
player because of his competitiveness, his toughness, his fire. He

(14:26):
brings a lot of passion and I love that he
hates to lose and that fits what we want, you know,
he he just hit. That quality about him really stood
out to me.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
And how is he handled kind of coming in now
and now the Vets are here, Like it's one thing
to come here to rookie mining camp and you know,
it's just you're kind of with all the other first
time guys. How is he handled being with the Vets
and a little bit of a different speed.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
He's handled it great. Jackson's a very mature kid.

Speaker 5 (14:58):
He understands the feel of the room, and I think
it's a credit to him is he understands he's watching
a guy who's won a Super Bowl and has been
to ten Pro Bowls and he's one of you know,
a handful of guys they ever do that. So Jackson's
got a really good mindset right now. He's not only
watching Russ, but Jamis and Tommy.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
All three of those guys.

Speaker 5 (15:23):
Had a ton of experience, and I think he's doing
a great job of taking a little bit from each
of them in his own way.

Speaker 2 (15:30):
So how do you I mean, you've got a tough
job now because there's only so many reps. Yeah, that's
like if I'm Russ, I want them all because I'm
playing on start week one. Like all right, we Jamis
needs some too, and guess what we get? The young
bucks got to learn some too. How do you do it?

Speaker 5 (15:45):
All three of them do too, because they haven't had
reps in this system. It's one thing if you have
a guy who's built up a library for himself. But yeah,
that's the that's a good problem to have right now.
We've got a ton of reps this offseason. It's been
a great offseason so far. Of dividing them up between Russ,
Jamis Jackson, and Tommy, they've done a great job of

(16:07):
supporting whoever has been in there and come in every morning,
give them the plan. Hey, you guys got you got
this many, you got this many, you got this many,
and then you got this many.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
And they go and take advantage of them. We talk
about all the time.

Speaker 5 (16:20):
Hey, control, you can control, take advantage of all your opportunities,
and if you do good with those opportunities, you get more.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
They've all done that.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
Yeah, well, man, I think the quarterback room is in
good hands. And I know this. Your quarterback dinner is
going to be excellent now with a you got a
first round pick and you got Russ, Like that's right.
This might be the richest quarterback room in the league.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
Yeah, combine everybody, you we go have a good time
at the day.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
That sounds sorry, say thanks so much for the time.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
Appreciate it, appreciate Fuck this year
