(00:22):
Week eleven, the Giants fall to the visiting Green Day Packers.
Twenty seven to twenty is the final score, but Howard
a lot of changes for the Giants this week, not
only interim head coach Mike Kafka now running things, Jamis
Winston starting at quarterback. What did you see from this
offense led by Jamis?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I saw that Kafa did a great job mixing it up.
First fifteen plays is like a very scripted plays and
I thought that in the past they got away from that,
and this week didn't see me they got away from
They kind of stuck with it. They stuck with the
run a lot more, which was was very impressive. They
were taking a tough yards two and three yard at
a time. That was that was That makes it easier
(01:00):
from later in the game you get into five to
six and a couple of times they broke it outside
for like over ten yards, so that was good. I
also saw the middle of the field open up when
Jamis is in the game as a taller guy, he
throws the ball into the middle of field, sometimes in jeopardy,
but he does throw it into the middle of field,
So I kind of enjoyed that.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Yeah, and they got the run game going as well.
I mean, you mentioned how this scripted plays to start
the game worked out.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
They had an opening drive touchdown, Devin Singletary running it in.
He had two rushing touchdowns on the day. It's his
third career two rushing touchdown game. How important was it
for this offense The fact that they were able to
get that run game going, something that they've struggled with
so far this season, and doing it against a Packers
team that doesn't often give up a lot of running yards.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Well, it's a good thing. One is a good thing
because you want to give your offensive line confidence, and
that's how you build a confidences by running the ball. Two,
it makes the passing game a lot easier because the
play action passes work if everybody's starting to commit to
try to stop the run. So both of those things
really helped Jamis out today being able to move the
ball on the ground. The office line was pretty excited
(02:01):
and grinding it out for him like they do every week.
But it made it a lot easier for him because
he hasn't played in this offense yet.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Well, again, that run game going to really helped the
screen game. In the passing game too, we saw them
going for a little bit more in that category, something
that they've kind of gone away from the earlier part
of the season.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Well, the screen game was helped by the quick passes
outside and you started to see guys like trying to
break on the ball. So when it was time for
the throw the screen, they were breaking to the receiver
that was just up the field and leaving the back
out there by himself. So that really helped out. So
when when they stopped the block, they had like a
good five yards law protection before he even got touched.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, now we talked about the opening drive touchdown. The
Giants were in it. It was a back and forth game.
The Packers had two missed pats.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
On the day.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
The Giants had one as well, a pat that was
flagged for a penalty of fifteen yard penalty and it
ended up being nearly fifty yards.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
There was a miss.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
But now we're getting in the weeds with it.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
But you know they had a shoplock.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
How do you chop block on a pat because they're
all touching each other, they're not, It's kind of that
was a very interesting call.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
I was a little bit you know, I don't wear stripes,
so I'm not even gonna comment on because I don't
know what they're seeing down there. But whatever it was,
they threw the flag and backed them up, and the
retry on the pat was no good for the giants there.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
The wind was blowing sideways at once half to feel,
I think towards the Moody sign, is that right, Moody
sign or Budweiser signed Winds blown towards the packer's sideline,
and the other half the field the waves blown towards
the giants silde.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
I'm like, it was swirling down there like a toilet bowl.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
It was. It was pretty bad.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
I was like this, that's why I couldn't they could
get the kicks down if you weren't sure which way
to win was born exactly.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
You could you could really miss them. How to get
in here?
Speaker 4 (03:47):
If you're lined up here, you gotta go over the
middle with at the score right, How do we make
that happen? I don't know, Bud Citizen does it makes
sense of your money with citizens Official Bank of Eli Manning.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, the kicking game was not working out as effectively today.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
That wind was whipping, it was cold, it was chilly.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
But you know, despite that, the Giants still did find
their way a twenty to nineteen lead in the fourth quarter.
James Winston running in a touchdown. Packers take a twenty
seven to twenty lead with about four minutes left in
the game, and the Giants have an opportunity. Jamis brings
him down the field, takes a shot at the end
zone for Jalen Hyatt gets picked off. What did you
(04:29):
see on that play after a drive that they had
you been successful moving the chains down the field.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
I'm not sure if Hilod high cut its route off,
if Jamis overthrew him. It's just that they'll know exactly
what happened. But it looked like they were a miscommunication
between the two of them and that's kind of where
the ball kind of gets away from them. And I
hate to say if I do remember seeing something like
that in the preseason as well, where he ran and
ran in the top of the route and Jamis threw
(04:58):
it to the outside. So I'm like so, and then
it was a conversation afterwards. So I don't know exactly
what each guy is seeing. If it's a read route
where you're at the top of your route, you have
to determine which way to go, then they both have
to be reading the same thing. So again I don't know.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Yeah, a tough moment right there, with about a minute
left in the game, throwing a pick in the end zone,
giving the Packers the ball back. The Giants would lose
twenty seven to twenty in a heartbreaking fashion. And then
when you look at the way the rest of this
game went down the defensive side of the ball, we
got to talk about the defense first of all, some positives.
Brian Burns two sacks on the day. He now has
(05:35):
thirteen sacks on the season. That's a new career high.
We're eleven weeks in, eleven games in. He's got a
new career high for a season. Total eclipsing his previous
career high of twelve and a half. It's got to
be feel great for him to have that personal accolade,
but also challenging to do so on a team and
a defensive unit that has had their struggles.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Yeah, he's having one of those years.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Could be all pro year, might get it up close
to nineteen sacks at the rate he's going right now,
you know, two sacks here and there, and teams are
still having to throw the ball against the Giants because
the giants are scoring points, so it's not like they're
going to be out there just running the ball, which
gives him more opportunities, which is you know, and you know,
if they keep getting the lead late in games, they're
definitely going to keep throwing the ball, which it gives
(06:18):
him more opportunities.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
But having it, you know, having a great, great year.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
And the season isn't going that well usually makes you
feel a little empty. You're proud of what you're doing.
You keep grinding, and I always say, try to have
your best year every year, and no matter what the
rest of the team's doing, you're trying to have your
best year. So he's doing that, which is impressive as
far as you know, the defense goes and what's these
shortcomings are for whatever reason?
Speaker 1 (06:43):
You know.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
I made a comment or in the pregame show and
during the show about like, you know, they they seem
to not to be able to reach for the victory.
I said, somehow, some way they got to take that
extra step, that extra they got to reach out a
little bit further to try to get to obtain what
they're going I don't know what it is. I'm watching them,
you know, run the ball right up the middle, like
(07:05):
not kind up the middle, right up the middle. Uh,
who's is Like if one guy's out out of position,
that gets you to the second level, if two guys
are out of position, that gets you into the secondary.
And it's been a lot of into the secondary moments.
So they got to figure it out, giving up the
edge a lot on past rush when when you know
(07:26):
you have to be outside and you you choose to
go inside because I can beat him inside. But when
you don't beat him inside, then all of a sudden,
he's just kind of jogging around the outside and he's open,
giving himself more time throw the ball down the field. Uh,
there was there was a little bit of that out there,
and we saw that a lot. We want players to,
you know, be explosive. We want players to be creative.
(07:47):
But you know, I always say, like, you can live
be on nexs and o's once you can do the
x's and o's.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
So how do you get that? How does this team
remedy that?
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Right? I mean, it looks like you see that spark
in this team, You see that fire, especially on the
offensive side of the ball. You see them running through
the tape right there. How do you kind of inspire
that as a player or as a coaching staff that's
gone through so much change in this past week, how
do you how do you fix that?
Speaker 2 (08:13):
You can't really fix it fix it because it's so
late in the season. But the first thing you do
is guys like Burns start holding other guys accountable, like
come on, guys, loo, look, you got to do this,
like you know if I'm doing this, or you gotta
do that. And the more you can hold each other accountable,
like and like don't just let it slide, like like
really be like hey this, we're not doing the right
(08:33):
thing here. The more accountability that you can have between
each other, the easier it's going to be. For the
coaching to take when you're out there doing your own thing,
and in some cases that's when or trying to help
somebody you think is not going to do the right thing,
which is also bad. Like if I'm standing behind you
(08:54):
and I'm looking at you, I'm like, I know he's
not gonna get.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Do this right.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
So I got to like hedge a little bit. The
next thing, you know, somebody's up to my level blocking me.
But I should of orse. I should have been because
I was worried about him not getting this guy because
he's gotten gashed twice already, right, So you get that's
you know, that's accountability and finding somebody that you know,
guys that are consistent besides besides Dexter in the middle,
(09:18):
the new guy we just picked up in the free agency,
number ninety one, I believe that's right. Do that mess
it up? But the defensive tackle we got h he
is helping Dexter out tremendously and you know, getting uh
Nacho back healthy, trying to keep him healthy if we can. Uh,
(09:42):
It's I just don't know. You just got to find
a way to get these guys you know, constantly, constantly,
constantly and play it's it's and that player was Harris
by the way. But you've got to constantly find three
guys in the middle, three guys in the middle, three
guys in the middle. You gotta find. I see, Thibodeau's
a little banged up. You got Burns. Burns and Thibodau
(10:03):
have been playing pretty well to go.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
If you want to know how to manage two minutes
of crunch time football on your match. But if you're
wondering about a long term financial plan, you should talk
to Citizens.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Hey, I can also talk long care. I'd like to
learn about any routine.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
Yes, I knew I could help make sense of your
money with Citizens.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
Right.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Thibeau didn't play today, and then you know, also on
the defensive side, Holland didn't play a debo, a late scratch.
Corey Black gets hurt in the game, is out with
the hand. I mean you're depleted.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Yeah, you get and you know, when you're getting all
that stuff, you're trying to keep guys in. You got
to have guys that are like I due Carter great talent,
got to match talent's got to match play on the field.
It's got to be consistent and you know, Trying to
be a pro isn't just being a guy who's making
every play. Trying to be in a pro is just
they had did my job which allowed other guys to
(10:52):
make the play. And that's sometimes that's harder than the office.
Linemen know it better than anybody because they're blocking, they're
not catching ball, running passes or anything like that.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
They're just doing their job.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
And as long as they do their job, everybody else
can do their job around them. So you kind of
have to have that kind of mentality. I'm gonna do
my job. And if my job is to set the edge,
and we'll set the edge, my job is to come inside,
I'm we'll come inside. My job is to fill one
spot on the field, on spot, if it's to stay
with the receiver, never look into the backfield. Then will
stay with receiver, look in the backfield. I know this
(11:25):
guy is gonna scream for ball, so I can get
my hand up to her. But it's all these different.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Things, yeah, and a lot of things, and a lot
of an opportunity to correct them again, because another game
right on deck, another week, another game. The Giants have
a late season by so the best circumstance when you
lose a game like this is an opportunity to get
back on the field.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Next week.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
They're taking talents to Detroit taking on the Lions. The
Lions playing Sunday night football this week, but we know
what a tough opponent Detroit can be. Their run game
is ferocius. Jered Golf is a talented quarterback. What is
your headline for this matchup between the Giants and Lions
next week?
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Keep it simple? Stupid? I mean, here's the problem with
the Lions. The Lions.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
You know they lost Ben Johnson, but their offense hasn't
lost a step. They are what I mean by they're
scoring a lot of points. They're running a lot of
different style plays. Some people say they're trick plays if
you run them just because it's the next play up.
It's not a trick play. It's it's part of your
part of your selection.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
They always go forward on fourth down.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Yeah, you have to be on top of it.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
And you got like, not just good receivers, you got
explosively receivers. You gotta explode two explosive running backs. Like
the Giants are having a hard time stopping a run game.
What do you think is gonna happen. They're they're gonna
run the ball at you, and they're not gonna they're
gonna keep all their plays and.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
They're gonna run the ball.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
They're gonna show you a thousand formations where you have
to constantly try to figure out where to go. They
may not, they may not substitute, they may run no huddle.
Whatever they're gonna do, they're gonna do it at full,
full tilt, and from a defensive standpoint, that's gonna be tough.
Offensively a little bit of the same. They they have
a pretty good defense. They got good guys coming off
the edge. You gotta to account for those guys. They
(13:01):
got a couple of guys in the middles they're okay.
Secondary is pretty good. So you know, we got receivers
that aren't ordinarily starters. They got to come up big.
You can't run the wrong route.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
You can't.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
You gotta be on the same page as your quarterback.
Your quarterback's gotta trust you, and that's gonna It's like
I said, there are a lot of This is a
rock that's on the hill and that you got to
push up and you're at the bottom and you haven't
even the rock hasn't touched the hill yet. This is
this is a this is a tough moment. I'm not
saying they can't be Detroit. Anybody can have a bad game,
but the obstacles are so great that you have to
(13:35):
raise your level, like raise it even more.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
And the Giants have had so many games much like
today where they almost got it done where they were
in it and almost got the win, but.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
Just felt just short, just out of reach.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
So we'll see how things go next week as we
turn the page to Week twelve against the Lions. But
for Week eleven, it's twenty seven to twenty. It's the
final score, the Giants falling to the visiting Green Bay Packers.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
And that's a wrap for Giants.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
