we got a big preview show coming your way today
on the Giants Subtle Podcast. I've got a couple of
player interviews for you. I got Darius Moossal that'll come
here a little bit later. Paulson Adbo will lead off
(00:42):
with We're gonna Brian broad his former NFL scout, covers
the Cowboys down there in Big d And then of
course we have Bob Popp with the head coach of
the New York Football Giants, Brian Dable. Let's lead off
with giants newly acquired starting cornerback Paul send a debo Holston, Hawaii. Man,
how you're doing so first regular season game as a
(01:04):
member of the Giants in this defense.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
When you went back and you looked, how do you
think of win?
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Yeah, man, I think there was a lot to learn from.
Speaker 5 (01:10):
Obviously we didn't end up giving a win, but I
think when you look overall as a team, there were
a couple of players that we wish we could have
got back, and so we go back and we looked
at the things we could have done better, things that
we have to improve on.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
But I think we're feeling good and confident going in
the week two.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Now.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
You got a lot of questions from the media about
traveling with Terry mclaurny. You did see him a lot
in that game. I imagine that's gonna be a week to
week thing, right, depending on the matchup, whether or not
you travel, it'll be left and right. And how you
guys are gonna set those matchups.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Yeah, it just depends. You know, the receivers are going up.
Speaker 5 (01:38):
Again, it's the kind of scheme they run, how the
receivers are being used, if they're in the slot, if
they're primarily outside. So all those things you know, the
coaches talk about and we'll talk about and decide what
to do from there.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
Not even specifically to you, but it just in terms
of how the team is able to approach it. How
much does playing a guy like Jayden Daniel's impact how
you can play your coverage because you play a man
against a guy like that, it's you know, he can run, right,
he can gain all the yards in a scramble. So
how much just playing a guy like that impact just
how wide you're thick your coverage men you can be
(02:11):
given how he can hurt you with your legs?
Speaker 5 (02:12):
Yeah, I mean's this is just an added element of
him being able to run and be a you know, prolific,
prolific runner. It just makes you have to be honest,
It makes it eleven eleven football. Right, You have to
a count for everybody. You have to count for the
quarterbacks legs, so certain things are a little bit more difficult,
you know, naturally.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
Yeah, and you know, we talked a little bit too
about how pass rush can help the secondary. Right, if
you guys think the pass rush is gonna get there,
you can sit on routes, you can anticipate a little bit, right,
But if they're mush rushing, you know, trying to contain him, right,
then get after the quarterback? Does that then impact them,
which impacts you and and kind of just change the
way you have to play defense overall.
Speaker 5 (02:47):
Yeah, man, I maybe end time you're going up against
a mobile quarterback, you got to be prepared to cover
for a little bit longer. You got to be able to,
you know, cover the second and third routes. Right if
the guy scrambles and you know, the receiver breaks off
a route, you have to be prepared to cover the
second route. So it's just something that comes with a
quarterback just gonna be scrambling and stuff.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Are there things and ways you could only build chemistry
in a secondary in regular season games as opposed to
what you're doing in training camp and practice. So the
things that you guys need to go through in real
game situations to kind of build over the course of
the year in addition to what you do in the offseason.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Yeah, I think it just all comes together.
Speaker 5 (03:23):
Off season work, training camp, all those things that you're
going through working through difficulties and trials and challenges together,
and the more challenges you kind of get to get
through together. The closer you become as a defense and
more you kind of know exactly what somebody would do
on a certain play. The communication just keeps getting better
and better. So I think in this league, it's just
a race to get better, right from week one to
week two, improve and just keep that going on. And
(03:46):
I think we're heading in the right direction.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
How has this team bounced back after a tough loss emotionally?
You know, you guys are back on the practice field
on Wednesday. We'll recording this on Wednesday afternoon. How is
the team bounced back just from an emotional standpoint from
that top loss in Week one?
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, I mean, it's a long season. That's a good team.
Speaker 5 (04:00):
We played and they did some things and we were
able to win the game against us. So we came
in confident. We're still confident, still still know what we
have as a team. Feeling really good about that. So
I think just coming back to work, like I said,
be objective about the performance, look at the things that
we could have did better. Of course, don't brush it off,
you know what I mean, But at the same time,
don't make it more than it is. So just look
at it for what it is. We lost, Okay, we
(04:21):
have to improve on some things. Let's improve and let's
get ready to go to Dallas.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
When you get where you want to go, what do
you want either the personality or the playing style of
the secondary specifically.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
To be on this team?
Speaker 6 (04:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (04:32):
I think as a secondary, just you know, setting a tone,
being dominant, having fun out there, flying around, playmaking ability right,
being able to get the ball and affect a quarterback.
All those things are going to help this team as
we move forward.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
All right, you have two games against Dallas when you
were rookie in twenty twenty one, then you played them
in twenty twenty four last year. I'm sure you started
to study them already. Even though Brian schottenheim Or was
their offensive coordinator last year, I thought their offense looked
very different then then under Mike McCarthy. As you start
to look at them, how many changes have you seen?
How much different is their offense schematically than what you
saw in your previous matchups?
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Yeah, I mean I played against them last year. It's
tough to tell in game one, right, you.
Speaker 5 (05:12):
Don't have that much of a short body of work
to be able to see is something just so one
off or is that what they're doing going into this year.
So as you're you know, studying, you study everything right,
be honest and you know, make sure that you're whatever
we're playing, ready to read your keys and player correct technique.
So there's not too much as far as tendencies and stuff, right,
we can see certain things, but like I said, it
(05:32):
is week one, so you kind of got to be
honest and be prepared for everything.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
But you know how Dak wants to play quarterback. You've
seen him. He's been in the leaf for a long time.
He's thirty two years old, that had a lot of success.
What is it about Dak in the way he plays
quarterback that as a cornerback you have to be aware
of and ready for.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Yeah, I think Dak is a really good quarterback.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
You can make every throw, he can extend plays right,
and so he has everything you needed to be a
really good quarterback in this league.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
And that's what we've seen for you know, the duration
of his career.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
So I think he has all the tools to to
make you as a corner just know that you know
he knows where to go right if you miss, you know,
if you miscommunicate or something, he'll be able to find it.
So I think just all that that that we've seen
throughout his career makes him somebody that you have to
really prepare for.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
I feel like he's also a guy that's willing and
he wants to push the ball downfield even when there's
this is not necessarily a ton of separation too, right,
So you kind of always have to be ready.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
Yeah, I think it's a dB that's I mean, regardless
who you're playing, you're always ready for them to go deep,
You're always ready for every route. Really, you kind of
have to be on alert, regardless of sure who you're
playing or whatever, because as we know, all it takes
is one play to change the outcome of a game.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
So you just always on alert. And like you said,
you can.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Make every throw, right, you can throw deep, intermediate, short routes,
check out of a play, So all those things he has,
and as.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
A dB, you just have to really prepare for everything
that he can do.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
All right, I'll take the receivers one by one. Let's
start with Ceedee Lamb. What makes him a little bit
unique in terms of his strengths and how you had
to deal with him as a cornerback?
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Yeah, cities, I mean like A said that.
Speaker 5 (07:00):
I mean both of them, honestly are really good receivers
and they can do everything. They can catch the ball
in contested situations, really good run after the catch, guys
that are looking to score and take a five yard
route and take it for a long way. So I
think you just got to be ready to tackle. You
gotta be ready to cover them. They could run every
route good speed on both of them, So a good
(07:23):
challenge going in a week two.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
I want to go in one aspect of both both guys.
Ced is a guy that they will move into the
slot a lot, right. Why do you think he's a
guy that can be effective in the slot when he
has a two way go and maybe a little bit
more room to operate in there.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Yeah, I think, like.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
I just said, with his ability to run after the catch,
right and get him moving and get him to know
some of those situations where he has the ball in
his hand and he can kind of start to make
something shake and prolong a play and get some yards
after contact. I think all those things are reasons why
you want to kind of get those guys the ball
in space.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
You're a big, physical corner. George Picken's big physical wide receiver.
He's great at the catch point down the field catching
ball were maybe necessarily necessarily open, but he just just
well to the ball in the air. As a corner,
when you're taking on a wide receiver like that, what
are some things you have to do to prevent some
of those contested catches from being completed.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
Yeah, I think you gotta be ready to, you know,
play the ball on the air. They'd be ready to
be really physical, and he's a physical receiver at the
catch point, really disciplined and detailed in your technique whether
you're playing press or you're playing off. So you know,
like you say, it's a really good ability to track
the ball down the field and again be able to
run after the catch, So you got to be prepared
(08:32):
for that.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
And then finally, their run game, corners obviously have to
be very involved in the run game. It seemed like
they're using a lot of pollers in that game, a
lot of guys coming around, They put guys in motion,
use them as lead blockers. What are some of the
challenges that you saw in terms of their run games schematically,
and they're also using a bunch of different players in
the run game as well. Including Kubante Turpin's kind of
they do everything gay.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
I mean they got they got some good guys and
they're run hard, you know, running backs and stuff, so
you gotta be ready to come up and tackle.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
I think that's kind of every week.
Speaker 5 (08:58):
You know, you kind of prepare that way and know
that if you're not technically sound right, things can break.
So you just you know you're ready to play your
technique and play to your strengths.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Paulson, good stuff man, appreciate the time, dude, and good
luck Agains Dallas.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Hey you rev.
Speaker 4 (09:12):

(09:36):
All right, that was pauls to de deebo really good
stuff out of him. A big challenge taking on Ceedee
Lamb and George Pickens with Dak Prescott in Dallas on Sunday.
All right, let's turn our attention to the Dallas Cowboys.
We welcome in front of the program Brian brought Us,
former scout in the NFL Packers Cowboys. Now he's on
the fan down there in Dallas. There's a lot of
(09:57):
other great stuff. I talked to him about some of
the challenges the Cowboys are going to pose to the Giants.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Hoddle up, get in here. If you're lined up here,
you gotta go over the middle with at the score.
Speaker 7 (10:09):
Great.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
How do we make that happen?
Speaker 7 (10:11):
I don't know, but citizen does it makes sense of
your money with citizens Official Bank of Eli Manning.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
And now we're joined by Brian brought Us, who hosts
Afternoon Drive on the fan down in Dallas, and of
course he's covered the Cowboys for a long time. Former scout. Brian,
it's good to talk to you, my friend. The two
teams at zero to one here desperation time, right.
Speaker 7 (10:33):
Yeah, you know it's uh, you're absolutely right. That week
one you kind of like going, okay, well here we are.
We put everything into it, you know, through the summer
and the off season and all that, you go through
training camp and now you sit here and you hope
it's the uh, it's the get right, get back to
get right game, you know, but you know, and it's again,
(10:53):
it's one of the things it's kind of a little
bit dangerous for both of these teams, John, is that
teams have started with division games and now you're looking
at a situation where you know, one of these teams
is going to be oh and two, but really more
importantly oh and two in the division.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Yeah, absolutely right. Okay, So Brian, what were you able
to take out of that Cowboys first game against Philadelphia?
And I guess I'll start here. It seemed very different
to me on both sides of the ball, So I
guess I want to start there. What should Giant fans
be prepared for in terms of how this team just
operates now differently on both offense and defense with the
new coaching staff.
Speaker 7 (11:30):
Yeah, it really does, you know, Matt Eberflus. On the
defensive side of the ball, they went in with the
whole idea of really just trying to rush for against
this Philadelphia offensive line, which you know is a daunting task,
especially without Mike Parsons being there. So uh, you know,
it came down to they really weren't getting pressure. They
(11:52):
had to bring more pressure. You know, you started to
see some slot blitz his corner blitzes, you know, the
linebacker blitzes. He was having to do something to manufacture
some pressure. But what's really unique John is he played
zone coverage behind it, you know, really the majority of
the football game. And if you're one of those guys
and gals that believes in metrics and you like to say, okay,
(12:14):
well what's the one thing that gives you know, Jalen
Hurts trouble, it would be zone coverage and they sat
in it the whole night. They got him to hold
the football, you know they had with Digs playing, that
surely helped the situation. Bland Elam, you know it was
in training camp, it was it was it was a
big question mark would Digs be back to be able
(12:35):
to help clearly the secondary. They you know, Hooker the
safety played well, Donovan Wilson playing down in the box
played well, but they primarily sat in like a covered
two shell and it just played zone defense and dared
Jalen Hurts to make some throws and you know, the
secondary held up. They got enough pressure and that seemed
(12:55):
to work out very very well. I think the Eagles
were compromising a couple of their offensive line spots and
you know, Dallas was able to take advantage of that.
But overall, I think the defense it was especially after
the weather delay, you know the first part. You know,
you felt like that Jalen Hurts running around. Uh, you know,
they had some guys that Donovan Azaraku. You know, you
(13:16):
and I talked about him out of Boston College when
you and I visit every year about the draft, and
you know we talked about, hey, how we liked this guy.
And then you know, it was really a very eye
opening experience for him having to deal with Jordan mile Lootta.
Speaker 5 (13:29):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (13:29):
You know, it was no easy task, but uh, you
know it's it's that it's those experiences. But Dallas defensively
like they were, you know, they they had to do
some things pressure wise to make up for Parsons and
offensively though for a half, Uh yeah, I felt like that.
You know, Dallas did a pretty solid job of moving
the football. They're the motions, uh, you know, getting guys
(13:51):
in the backfield, putting running backs and that are to
be putting receivers in the backfield, you know, moving things around.
I thought Dak Prescott had one of his better games
when it came to throwing the ball. But then the
weather delay hit and then all of a sudden, things
kind of there was no more motion. There was really
no more you know, of getting guys you know open.
It just kind of reverted back to like when Mike
(14:12):
McCarthy was calling place, so, you know, defense.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
It was funny. It was really a game of two hats.
Speaker 7 (14:18):
You really don't know is Dallas's defense is good or
is bad depending on which half they played, And is
Dallas's offense is good or bad depending on which half
of football you watch.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
How do you think that? I'm sorry, Brian, you mentioned
how they handled hurts and playing a lot of zone right,
they kept down and Smith in front of them. How
do you think they're gonna approach the Giants now, who
don't have the same They don't have the two wide
receivers that that the Eagles have, but they certainly have
league neighbors who is as good as anyone. Are they
gonna double him? Are they just gonna sit in their
zone and make Russell Wilson just you know, play in
(14:53):
front of the defense instead of trying to go over
the top what he wants to do. How do you
think they approached the Giants passing it?
Speaker 7 (15:00):
Yeah, I think this is where I can maybe help
your listeners here, John the if you initially, Matt Everfluse
was a Rob Ryan Disciples, so he was a What
that meant was he played three four, played a lot
of man coverage and sometimes played with ten men on
the field because they didn't always get all the personnel
onto the field when they needed to, which is a
(15:23):
Rob Ryan special.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
But they he He then stayed.
Speaker 7 (15:27):
Over when Rod Marinelli came on board, and there was
a couple of different times where the Cowboys faced the
Seattle Seahawks with Russell Wilson playing quarterback. And then it
turned into Rod Marinelli's philosophy to playing Russell Wilson was
make him play out of the well, try and build
that around him and make him play backwards. Don't let
(15:49):
Russell Wilson come forward to make throws. Make him have
to play backwards and try and throw over the top
of your of your your your rush pressure up the
what you're saying, Yeah, they're trying to the big thing,
and I promise you you're going to see you know,
you're going to see Kenny Clark. I would not again,
(16:12):
I'm saying, I would not be surprised to see Kenny
Clark and then trying to isolate him with John Michael
Smith's the center and see if John Michael Smith's if
you attack his snap hand, can he get his off
hand up quick enough and can he handled power?
Speaker 2 (16:27):
You know?
Speaker 7 (16:27):
And that was a you know, Cam Jurgens was having
some problems with that last week, you know. And so
we'll see. I think it's going to be a lot
of trying to match some guys up one on one.
Make Russell Wilson. And one thing that Russ likes to
do is is to escape through the middle of the pocket,
you know. So he will, he will go back, he
will get really small, he will duck and the next
(16:48):
thing you know, he's coming out of there running the football.
So Dallas, I don't think they played. And I've talked
to my colleagues about this quite a bit. As a
matter of fact, I even asked Matty Eberflu's tech because
I you know, I know Matt pretty well. I'd say, hey,
wait a minute, if you're not going to play, if
you're not going to play spy coverage against Jalen Hurts,
are you going to play spy coverage against you know,
(17:10):
Russell Wilson did.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
I didn't get an answer back on that one. So
we'll see, We'll see how things play out.
Speaker 7 (17:16):
But I have a feeling they're going to try and
attack the middle of the pocket again, That's what Matt Eberflus,
He's going to take this Rod Marinelli approach, try and
make him play out of the.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
Well anything plays zone behind that.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
I think they're going to try and play some zone
behind that.
Speaker 7 (17:30):
I that surprises the hell out of me, you know,
depending on what you get too, because it looks like
to me watching your tab a little bit, john that
that neighbors and Robertson are kind of like your motion guys,
you know, Johnson the tight end, a little bit of
a motion guy.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
You know. How does you know? Will you know?
Speaker 7 (17:47):
It seemed like the ball was going in this particular game,
was going more to the outside, outside the numbers than
it was going down the field. But I I have
a feeling if you watch the one big play that
el gets gave up was one. They went vertical and
and Smith was able to hold Hooker the safety in
the middle of the field, and you know that got
(18:09):
dots and down the field one on one with Elam
and they were able to make that. So I I
anticipated the ball going down the field, but I didn't
see a whole lot of balls going into the into
the middle of the field on some crossing stuff and
all that. I don't know if the Giants will want
to try and do that, but I did see a
lot of balls going to the outside, and you know,
maybe that's what the Cowboys are going to try and do.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Make it Russell throw the ball to the outside.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
Yeah, I mean, you know, Russy, he doesn't access the
middle of the field a ton Brian. He just never has,
you know. And I think he's shouveled, you know, he's
a little smaller getting.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
It over the head, little smaller, lit shorter.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
Yeah, absolutely, I think that's a big part of it.
I'm with you. Final question that was secondary, how healthy
his digs? Are you going to see a snap count
kind of and continue to increase and and how did
elm look you know this offseason he's kind of a
cast off and then they're putting a lot of faith
in them. They're just kind of rolling him out there
after the bills basically like let them let him go.
Speaker 7 (18:59):
Yeah, that was That was one of those where and
we've seen this before, John, You and I have done
this a long time. When it comes to drafting, it's
sometimes you get the general manager and the scouts level
player and the coaches are like, why the hell did
you draft that guy for us? And I I think
he needed a I think he needed a breath of
fresh air. Uh. He came in with the OTAs the
mini camps when we had the access to watch practice,
(19:20):
he would come with down with an interception, He came
down with a batted ball or two.
Speaker 8 (19:25):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (19:25):
Then he got to training camp. I watched twelve practices.
Of the twelve practices, I saw he had three interceptions
and not just not just off Joe Milton being silly.
He had a couple of interceptions off Dak Prescott being silly.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
So you know that's you know, he played well. He
got to start. Uh. Diggs is now no longer on
a pitch count.
Speaker 7 (19:46):
You know, Diggs that there was a lot of gnashing
of teeth. You know where where you know, Diggs worked
on his own, he was with his trainers, he rehabbed
on his own. And but to his credit, Uh, and
we were after Uh, don't you know, we were we
were we were going after it pretty strong, I know
on the media side of things here in Dallas. And Uh,
(20:07):
but he came back. He was ready and played, played,
played some snaps in that game. But he's given been
given full medical clearance. My anticipation is that you'll see
dig start. You also see Uh, You'll also see Bland
and then also Elin potentially, well he'll be off the bench,
but when they go to Nickel, Elan will be in
the game and they'll kick Bland to the inside, is
(20:29):
what you'll see.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
Now that makes sense, all right, Let's jump to the
offensive side of the ball real quick, Brian. I thought
the running game looked completely different than when we saw
under Mike McCarthy.
Speaker 6 (20:37):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (20:38):
A couple double le blocker plays. He had the belly
back on the tight end to cut off the backside
a couple of times. I thought it was some pretty
fun creative stuff. And I thought, frankly, they got better
movement than I seen them get a couple of years.
In that run game.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Yeah, we threw a lot of dirt on Williams at
running back. We really really weren't sure.
Speaker 7 (20:53):
I know, the fans were screaming for uh, for Jaydon Blue,
the fifth round pick out of Texas. You know, oh,
you know he would have done this and he would
have done that, and then you know, then coach tells
us that, well, he he doesn't do this and he
doesn't do that when they're getting ready for the game,
you know, so uh, you know, the better practice habits,
(21:13):
better meeting habits, all those things. I would anticipate that
that Blue will probably be inactive again this week, so
he'll be you know, it would be Williams, He'll be
Sanders and then Hunter Lipkey as that kind of that
h full back one back runner. Williams ran the ball
extremely tough.
Speaker 6 (21:31):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (21:31):
You know, it helped the fact that, you know, Philadelphia
was down one of their better defensive tackles in the game.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
But for overall, though, the.
Speaker 7 (21:39):
Combination blocks that you were getting with Booker and you
were getting with bbi U, you know, there was some
backside blocks that you know on the long forty nine
yard run where Terrence Steele was able to get from
right tackle all the way across the field and get
a block.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Uh you know they're there. That's what they're going to
kind of do.
Speaker 7 (21:57):
This is the first time in a long time we've
seen the Dallas Cowboys where they were plays or looked
like they're going to be stopped at the line of scrimmage.
Dallas got some really good movement in this game. I
mean they loaded up and you know, and you mentioned
there was a couple of times where uh, span Ford
the big tight end, him and Geiiton were double team
(22:19):
on a goal line play. They crashed the end down
and haul the end. They crash him inside, they get
a pull around from Tyler Smith to clean up, and
then Williams just takes the ball and just you know,
runs it right up the gut and they were able
to get you know, we hadn't seen that well. There
was there's times where this team would get stopped at
the line of scrimmage, behind the line of scrimmage. Not
(22:42):
through week one. They were able to get pushed. A
lot of the contact came beyond the line of scrimmage.
So that's something they're going to continue to try and
build on.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
Obviously it wasn't perfect. Then there was no Jalen Carter.
But what do you think about this young offensive line
group with with a big you know, spotlight on Guidon
and Bookers specically in past.
Speaker 7 (23:00):
Yeah, yeah, this will be a challenge for Guy and
Steel this week. And there'll be a challenge for for
bb and and also for Booker. And you know, I
think that Dallas is better equipped to handle teams. And
I say handle, and I mean that respectfully with what
the Giants have, what the Commanders have, what the Eagles have.
If you're light inside three, you're gonna struggle in this division,
(23:25):
and you know you've gotta And I was watching your
tape against the Commanders. I was watching Tyler Biads try
and block. I mean, it's it's tough if you do not.
If you do not handle these defensive tackles in this league,
it's very very difficult to move the football. And Dallas
did a pretty nice job of that last week. And
I say they're a power gap scheme team. Uh, They're
(23:47):
gonna push, and they're gonna push to the second level.
That's kind of what they do. And uh, you know,
if they play against the team that plays with a
little bit more quickness than power, Uh, that kind of
gives them a little bit of problems. They had some
problems with some twist stunts up front. You know, it's
you got some young guys and when you're talking about
Bbie and then you're talking about Booker, you know, Tyler
(24:08):
Smith is a Pro Bowl type player at guard, but
Dallas is better equipped to handle things. The thing that
we were really surprised about here in Dallas was how
will Geydon played. Because Geyton had a really good start
to training camp and then he got injured and then
he was gone, and the questions were were you going
to were you're going to play Nate Thomas at tackle
(24:29):
considering he had done all the work there and then
you know, Geydon was working rehabbing. Well, you know, Geyton
got a few practices under this belt. The coach and staff,
medical staff felt good about it, and they put him
out there. He's a much different player than he was
last year. He's better equipped to He's always been a
pretty good athlete, but he's developed some strength. His knee
(24:49):
been as much better, hand placement is much better. He's
not perfect by any means, but he looks a whole
lot different than he did last year.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
At this time.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
All right, final question, Dak Prescotte the passing game. I
thought Dak played as well as you could play in
that game. Even though he finished with under two hundred
yards and no touchdowns, I still thought he'd played great. Obviously,
the Ceede Lamb drops didn't help. George Pickens didn't do
a Tony did draw that defensive pass interference penalty. What
do you think that Cowboys passing game is going to
look like this week in terms of how they're going
(25:18):
to try to attack this giant secondary.
Speaker 7 (25:20):
Yeah, you gotta be able to I gotta be able
to block this giant front. You gotta be able to
start with blocking those edges, you know, and that's gonna
be the key for Dallas. And this one blocked the
edges and to make sure you just don't let the
inside guys hurt you as well. But yeah, Dak did
a really nice job. Did not get sacked in this
last game. His his his mobility, his awareness. Uh, he
(25:41):
put some some balls into some spots where they should
have been caught. And I'm not just talking about Ceedee Lamb.
I'm talking about Jake, Jake Ferguson, who is a very
reliable tight end he caught went up the scene that
you know, nine times out of ten that's a touchdown,
and in that case, it didn't end up to be
a touchdown and it cost him, you know, ultimately in
the game. So yeah, Dak is very very confident. I
(26:03):
don't think, correct me if I'm wrong, John, I don't
think he's lost the Giants since twenty sixteen.
Speaker 4 (26:10):
Since his rookie year, he has not cast the Dallas
Giants have not won in Dallas since twenty sixteen either.
Speaker 7 (26:15):
So yeah, there, yeah, that was that was what I
think it was Dak's first game, if I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
If I'm right about that, I believe it was.
Speaker 7 (26:23):
Yes, And so yeah, that was had a couple losses
that that year, and both of them were the Giants.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
What do you know.
Speaker 7 (26:29):
But yeah, it's Uh, he's played very well against the Giants.
As we've just talked about. He's he's a very confident
quarterback right now. He's got his health. Uh, he's happy
with that. I think he's in a really good spot mentally.
They've got to get George Pickens going though, by the way,
and that's one of the things that we talked about
quite a bit that the offense, the demise of the
(26:51):
offense after the weather delay, where was George Pickens. Yeah,
the ball was going to ceedee lamb and stuff like that.
But when you mentioned George Pickens creating opportunities, creating pass
interference penalties, George Pickens needs to be involved. George Pickens
does not need to get four cat or four targets.
George Pickens needs to have six to seven to eight
(27:12):
type of targets in these games, and they need to
find a way to split them up, you know, because
he is a weapon, and he was a weapon in
training camp, he was a weapon in practice. You know,
this was this was some coaching malpractice not to get
him more involved in that Philadelphia game.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
All right, Brian, Afternoon Drive on the fan in Dallas.
But you're also doing a podcast if Giant fans want to,
you know, go into enemy territory a little bit. Where
where can they find you?
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Yeah, we're over here.
Speaker 7 (27:36):
I've created my own media company, Crown Global Media, So
I've done I do a lot of podcasts work.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
I sell Foxs Lombardi.
Speaker 7 (27:42):
We do a podcast called do It All Right, which
we break down the giants and stuff and the opponents,
so you know, you can come on and put the
comments how wrong we are about talking about.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Your football team.
Speaker 7 (27:53):
But we also like to say if you're interested in
you know, we talk in NFL stuff. We talked to Cowboys,
of course. I also do just think a podcast called
Love with the Star on the Obyssey podcast. I do
one called Trust the Tape with Jeff Kavanaugh. I am
a busy, busy.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
Guy, but I would have it no other way, John,
I'd have it no other way.
Speaker 4 (28:10):
Have you watched your first college prospect yet?
Speaker 2 (28:13):
You know what people are already on me. If this
if this thing turns to oh and.
Speaker 7 (28:17):
Two, John, and you walk out this thing one and one,
and I'm O and two, I'm starting on draft film.
I'm starting it right right. I'm excited, though, John, to
be honest with you, I hate the fact this team
doesn't have Michael Parsons, But we get around to it.
With your Green Bay's pick, that thing is probably gonna
be thirty thirty one somewhere right around there. But at
least we got two first round picks.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
To talk about.
Speaker 7 (28:36):
Right, Hey, one more thing real quick. Yeah, I'm gonna
ask you a question real quick on our show. I
know you have toime n Yeah, okay, when the coach
came out and said when when Brian came out and
said that he's going to weigh all opportunities, why did
you let me go on Twitter and say I think
to start Jackson Dart against the Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
I didn't see you put that up.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
Oh yeah, immediately.
Speaker 7 (28:58):
I immediately said, man, this looks like a coach is
gonna start Jackson Dart next week. So uh, honestly, hey,
you know talented young man, I mean a really really
talented young man, one of my favorite, one of my
favorite quarterbacks. Trust me as an L shoe man watching him,
and he antagonized me at old miss. I do feel
(29:21):
like that, you know, we maybe sooner or later, who knows.
I'm not gonna act like I know what's going on
with the New York Giants, but I do know that
there's a very very very talented quarterback sitting there waiting
his term.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
And Ran, I didn't even ask you about the Michael
Parsons trade. I guess earlier were trying to know. I
feel Kenny Clark played pretty well.
Speaker 7 (29:40):
Kenny Clark played well, yeah, and I went back and
just just watching you I'm sick. I went and watched
Michaeh Parsons on tape and he had.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
A pretty good day. I can't wait.
Speaker 7 (29:54):
They got the Commanders tomorrow and I and I can't
wait to see how that all works out. But yeah, really,
it just, you know, the whole of the Michaeh Parsons thing,
It really came down to I think that I think
with Michaeh Parsons decided he wanted to go get the
second opinion on his back. I think that's when the
Cowboys said kind of had enough. I think that's when
they they said, listen, we are MRIs. Say that you're okay.
(30:17):
And obviously, if you watch the Packers game, he looked
more than all right to me, he looked bigger, he
looks stronger, He looked there's a lot of a lot
of good with Michaeh Parsons, and he looks really healthy
and fresh. No training, can't practice to deal with my
man was out there causing the havoc.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
But yeah, it's a hey.
Speaker 7 (30:35):
You know, we're a city that likes to trade our
generational players. That Micah Luca, it doesn't matter, We'll trade
them all. Whatever generational player we have you know we
could have Mariano Rivera here, we'd probably trade him away.
Speaker 4 (30:47):
You know what I'm saying, Brian, good stuff, my friend.
Ohs good to talk to you. Enjoy that and we'll
talk soon.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
Sounds good, John, Thank you.
Speaker 7 (30:54):
If you want to know how to manage two minutes
of crunch time football, I'm your man.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
But if you're wondering about a long term five financial plan,
you should talk to Citizens.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Hey, I can also talk long care. I'd like to
learn about Amolia routine. Yes, I knew I could help
make sense of your money with Citizens.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
Join us at the Ultimate New York Giants Women's Tailgate,
presented by Joe Malone. The ticketed event will take place
on Sunday, September twenty eighth before Giants Chargers. From ten
am to nude. You have the opportunity to connect with Giants'
Tailgate host Madelin Burke and Giants Legends. There'll be a
curated custom merchandise shop, exclusive Kendri Scott Activation, Tailgate games, giveaways, photos,
(31:31):
dj and more. Tailgate food and one drink ticket are
included with a ticket purchase. Tailgate is twenty one and
older only. Really good stuff from Brian brought us. Always
enjoy talking to him, and now we are going to
turn our attention back to another Giants player who have
a big role this week, Darius Moussau. He's gonna step
in and we believe at least start for Mikeah McFadden
(31:52):
who had a injury last week that will set him
out for a few weeks at least. Here's Darius on
what he's looking forward to this week. Paris. Obviously, you
got called into probably a little bit more work than
you expected in week one. What was that like, having
to quickly get out there onto the field and kind
of lock in very quickly.
Speaker 9 (32:08):
It was nice and it's exactly what we prepare for
this next man of mentality. When my number was called,
you know, I was just ready to go in there
and execute. But uh, unfortunately we didn't come out with
a win. But I felt like I just went out
there and just tried my best, did what I could,
uh contribute contribute to the team on both I was
playing both special teams and and defense at the time,
and so uh, just going out there and trying to
(32:29):
execute the game plan was what I really was trying
to be.
Speaker 4 (32:32):
Before we move onto the Cowboys. When you look back
and you go get the rush defense, specifically against the
running backs, I want to take the quarterback scrambles out
of it.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
How do you think the rush defense did overall?
Speaker 9 (32:41):
Yeah, a decent job. Obviously, you know, the end goal didn't,
you know, happened how we how we wanted to. But
I felt like we did a decent job. There's areas
of improvement everywhere all over the ball, you know, both
on the d line, the linebackers, the secondary and all that.
So you know, we just got to come in, have
a better game plan, you know, and and just execute
the game plank going coming into this uh this week Dallas,
(33:03):
you know, they they really want uh they emphasize their physicality,
so we just want to match that being be able
to go up Monoling model with these guys.
Speaker 4 (33:11):
So obviously Bin Scheinheimer was their last year as the
offensive coordinator. But I thought their offense looked very different
in Week one than it looked last year. When you
looked at it in what ways do you think it
looked a little bit different, specifically in the way they
were trying to run the football.
Speaker 9 (33:23):
Yeah, just physical, physical brand of football that that they're
playing over there, and you know you gotta respect it.
So we were gonna coach and get to make the
game plan for us be able to stop the run,
stop the shots. They love CD in the in the posts,
so just throw them, throw them up the ball him
and now they got picking. So just being able to
shut those guys down and then stop the run game
(33:44):
is really wed.
Speaker 4 (33:45):
One of the one of the things Dakan was to
do is throw it down the scene right to his
tight ends. That's something you have to keep an eye on.
How important is it to kind of get the right
depth in this game to make sure you cut off
some of those throws.
Speaker 9 (33:54):
Yeah, would you got to be disciplined with our coverages. Uh,
be able to off one another play a complimentary in
football football with our secondary on r D line, So
is being able to get dak off the spot they
able to throw.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
Some Darius, thank you so much. Best luck this week
is doullas sir, I appreciate you. That is Giants linebacker
Darius Mussou again likely to be in the starting lineup
this week next to Bobby Ocake. With that injury to
Micah McFadden. Moodis is a proud part of the New
York Giants and nine to brighte his minds to turn
today's risk into tomorrow's opportunities. Learnmore on Moody's dot com.
Now we turn our attention to the head coach of
(34:31):
the NYG, Brian Dable. The voice of the NYG, Bob
Papa had the chance to talk to him. Let's listen in.
Speaker 8 (34:39):
As always, we're joined by the head coach of the
New York Giants, Brian Dables. The Giants take on the
Cowboys here in Dallas, week two of the National Football
League season, and coaches get ready to play another road
division game. Just talk a little bit about the messaging
last week to your football team after you reviewed what
happened in Washington and sort of what the team team's
(35:00):
attitude was going back to work this week.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
Yeah, you go through the keys that you talked.
Speaker 6 (35:05):
About before the game, and some of those we certainly
didn't hit. And you get ready to go play another
game against a good team that played Philadelphia well, right mindset,
good preparation habits, good practice habits, and go out there
and play good game.
Speaker 8 (35:21):
Despite not having the results that you were looking for. Obviously,
there were things in the game that you look at
where there were chances, right, there were things you guys
put yourselves in certain positions. Do you try to accentuate
along with correcting whatever mistakes for me, but also accentuate
some positive things like, hey, look these things were good
here and just a little of this or a little
(35:43):
of that and we have a different result.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (35:47):
I think every play is a very very important play
in the game, and you try to win as many
of those plays as you can and play good in
situational football and then take advantage of opportunities. You know,
that's tackling on defense fundamentals, bob tackling throws and catches
one on one opportunities, controlling the line of scrimmage, getting
(36:07):
movement in the run game, containing the quarterback, all those
type of things. So you know, you go through a
number of plays, some good, some not as good, and
make sure you get the corrections.
Speaker 8 (36:20):
All right, let's talk about Dallas defensively. They did a
good job last week limiting Sakuon Barkley when they played them. Obviously,
Jellen Hurts was a big factor using his legs, but
they added Kenny Clark to the mix. I think Osa
Diggy Zoo is a pretty underrated player Neilan was active
in the game. What are some of the things about
(36:42):
their front and Ibra Flus's defense that are things that
you'll have to keep your eye on today.
Speaker 6 (36:49):
Yeah, I'd say it starts with those two inside players,
Osa and Kenny, both very good football players, good at
controlling the line of scrimmage in the run game. Flus
you know, does a good job with you know, adding
you another guy to the box, running through gaps, movement
at times, secondary pressures at times, which he did in
(37:11):
quite a bit in the second half, or should I
say more than he did in the first half. So look,
they got they got a good players, They're fast, and
I'm sure they'll be trying to get the football again.
That's a trademark of of coach. He Refluce's defense and
that was really you know, a big play in the
game there where they had one turnover and Philly didn't
(37:32):
have any.
Speaker 8 (37:33):
They also had a Dante Fowler back in the mix. Obviously,
you saw him twice last year with Washington. He's played
for the Cowboys before. You know, what are some of
the things as far as his bag that you that
are still impressive as he's in his eleventh year.
Speaker 6 (37:51):
Yeah, athletic quarterback that knows how to get after the passer,
got a variety of pass rush moves and does a
good job when you run it at him of playing
the run, so you know him Williams. They got Salomon
Thomas Beck who's a crafty veteran Sambor who knows Flew's
defense real well. Diggs Bland, we'll see where he's at,
(38:14):
who I think is a two exceptional corners when it
plays inside, when it plays outside in Nickel so be
a challenging, challenging day.
Speaker 8 (38:23):
Let's go to the other side of the ball where
Dak Prescott. You know, the numbers may not jump off
the chart from last week. I thought he played a
really good football game through it accurately. They just didn't
make some plays when they had an opportunity. You know,
he's thirty two now, he's been in the league ten years.
What's the growth been in him? And what did you
(38:44):
see in him kicking off his tenth season last week?
That jumped out a.
Speaker 6 (38:49):
Well, he's a good quarterback. He makes good decisions, he
throws the ball well, accurately, gives his skilled players opportunities
to make plays. Tough, smart, have a lot of respect
for Dak and the way he's played throughout his entire career.
He's a good quarterback.
Speaker 8 (39:08):
They added Pickens to the mix. You played against him
last year when he was in Pittsburgh, obviously, ceedee Lamb.
Speaker 3 (39:15):
You know he's he's been an.
Speaker 8 (39:16):
Incredible player, four straight Pro Bowls. What makes the addition
of Pickings make them much more difficult to deal with?
Speaker 6 (39:26):
Well, he's he's a good outside receiver. He's big, he's
got exceptional hands, does a great job of balls down
in the field with late hands and you know, making
tough catches. You know, she have to defend the whole field.
You know, a guy like Pickens and CD and you
know they're using i'd say turping a little bit more.
(39:47):
Who's dynamic with the ball in his hands, whether it's
a returner or you get to him in offense, which
they're trying to do a little bit. And Ferguson, who
I think is a really good tight end in this league,
complete tight end, and there's not a lot of those guys.
Speaker 8 (40:02):
Yeah, Although there was a change in head coach in Dallas,
obviously Schottenhammer was the offensive coordinator. Have you seen any
wrinkles or did you see any wrinkles in Week one
as far as how they're utilizing CD LAMB or is
it you know, moving them all over the place and
kind of the same as it's been in the past.
Speaker 6 (40:21):
Yeah, I've known Brian for a long time. He's he's
a heck of a football coach. But he had a
good plan. I think the trademark for Shati you know
when I was with him back fifteen years ago, whatever
it may be, is you know, preaching the physicality part
of the game, and I thought that showed particularly upfront
with their offensive lineman. You know, they had two thick
(40:42):
guards rookie out of Alabama Booker who's big and stout,
and Tyler Smith one of the best in the game,
and BB Smart, and you know they had to control
the line of scrimmage. They had a Tamante you know
runner out of North Carolina that was a Denver who's
got positive plays and does a good job of reading
the run, run where it needs to be. And again,
(41:03):
Brian is a good football coach who's going to do
what he thinks he needs to do each and every week.
But I'd say the physical part of it is definitely
a trademark of Coach Shotheimmer.
Speaker 8 (41:14):
You know you mentioned the tackling Williams is. Although he's
not tall, I mean, he's pretty sturdy, and we saw
that last week where first shots not necessarily getting him down.
Is that something that you know is a must in
this game as far as guys rallying to the ball.
Speaker 6 (41:31):
Absolutely, and that's one of the things I thought we
did improved was our tackling the first game. And that's
going to be no different you know with CD, with Williams,
certainly with Turpin, guys that can make plays with the
balls in their hand and make guys miss and create
(41:51):
extra hours and explosives in that regard. So not just
a technique of tackling, but the amount of people that
we have to the ball to get these players down.
Speaker 8 (42:00):
Coach, we appreciate a couple of minutes.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
