Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time to get inside the Giants. Let's go, Let's go,
get out on the Giants bubbling, give me some job.
Part of the Giants Podcast Network. Let's role. It's time
for yet another edition of the Giants Little Podcast, brought
to you by Citizens, the official bank of the Giants.
As we begin to get near the end of our
player interview series, talking to Giants players at every position

(00:21):
heading into training camp in twenty twenty five, it's time
for the safeties. This is the group that is the
fail safe. They're on the back end. Nothing can get
over their heads. The Giants have some young players, they
have a veteran that's a new addition. We'll talk to
all of them. Here's a safety position which could be
a key to Shane Bowen's defense in twenty twenty five.
All right, now we're joined by Giants safety Tyler Nukean Tyler.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
What's up man?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Man?

Speaker 4 (00:44):
How you doing all right?

Speaker 1 (00:45):
So, compare where you are at today from where you
are when I talk to you, probably knows the exact
same spot this year at the same time.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Man, night and day, bro Bro, I was a rookie
running like a chiggle on my head, man, just trying
to figure it out, trying to figure out where my
my spot on the team was, you know, my role,
you know, just coming off of draft prep, like combine prep,
all that no break. You know, it feels good that,
you know, I have an off season under my belt
and feel confident coming in the season.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
I don't imagine for safety that's probably particularly not a
great thing. Lighter spreads back there. So where do you
think you've made the most progress in heading into your
second year in terms of just figuring out what it
means to be a good safety in the National Football League?

Speaker 2 (01:26):
I think my process, man, just like learning what you know,
my body needs to uh perform at the highest level
every single day when my mind needs you know, my preparation,
you know, going into you know a workout or practice,
you know, taking care of my body in different ways
and finding new ways to get better just a little bit.
So I think, you know, my my process is definitely,
you know, gotten a lot better than last year when

(01:48):
I was just kind of, you know, trying to figure
it out.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
I don't being in the defense for the second year
can make a big difference in terms of being comfortable
playing faster. How does that show up on the field.
Like if I'm watching the old twenty two and I'm
watching you, how does it look different this year and
year two compared to year one, and why.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
It's gonna look a lot more calm.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Uh, you know, my my movements are gonna be decisive,
not reactive. I'm gonna put myself in the right places
at the right times before the ball even gets snapped,
so I don't have to go and run there.

Speaker 4 (02:20):
Things like that. Just things to to make myself move.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Easier and move more efficient on the field, not hopping
as much, not you know, running down as much, running
back as much, you know, just being calm, being confident.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
How has Javon you think helped that process a little bit,
having you know, it was high draft pick, like you
were both second round picks, right, yeah, correct, and kind
of keep that process going moving forward a little bit
fastert Uh.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Definitely a lot.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
I mean, obviously, you know, when you're coming into the league,
everything's you know, a learning curve coming from college to
the league. But he's a guy that's played a lot
of snaps, he's seeing a lot, He's played with some
amazing vets, so he's he's got a lot of things
in his role of deck say, you know he can
pull from that. You know, he's just pouring into me
that you know, I'm gonna be able to pull from
you know, in the future.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
So having him it is amazing.

Speaker 5 (03:09):
Man.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
I asked him this question. I'll ask you too. Do
you consider you and him to be completely interchangeable and
that both of you can do everything and you can
just be in any spot on the defense on any plane,
you guys will be fine.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
I think both of us can do anything that you
need us to do on the field. Both of us
are guys that you need us to be in the box.
We can be in the box. And he needs to
play back deep, we can play back deep. You know,
he needs to play man. We can play man. You
know he need us to, you know, get up into
the line and blitz, we can. We can also do that.
So I don't think there's anything on the field that
he can't do. And I definitely know there's nothing to

(03:40):
feel I can't do either.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
How much does that open up the things that Shane
Bowen can do? Knowing that you can put either of
you guys in any spot and the type of indecisiveness,
maybe that can cause in an offense where they don't
know what you're in because both of you guys can
do everything right.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
I think you hit it around the head and let's
you know, Shane get creative. You know he can be
on you know, both sides of the field and do
the same things. And you know we can flip and
change our responsibilities and you know, confuse your offer. So
I think that that's definitely gonna help us a lot,
you know, in our defense and you know, being able
to be confident doing that.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
I know a lot of the spring is installing this
basic stuff, but have you seen some of that disguise
and post snap moving and stuff starting to sneak its
way into the game point?

Speaker 2 (04:21):
You know, you know for now, you know, everybody's just
trying to you know, get to get the playbook, make
sure we're all on the right spot. So you know,
we we talked about it, but you know that's that's
for that's for camp, that's.

Speaker 5 (04:29):
Later, right.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
You got new coaches, Yeah, you know, marko Emanuel's back there,
Jeff Versus mostly at the corners, and I know you
got Pops back there. Mike Adams. What has it been
like working with those guys in the dB room.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Man, amazing man. M M is intense, bro. He's always
dy bro. He's he's just always on it, bro. There's
no dull moment with him. There's no dozing off, there's
no not paying attention because he gonna get right on you. So, uh,
you know, it's awesome having that and in his energy
in the room. I think it's it's bringing a lot
of you know, you know, a lot, a lot more

(04:59):
you know, just like every like energy into the room
that you know, we I think we needed for sure.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Finally, what are your goals for this season? What things
did you go into this offseason? I want to get
better at I want to be a better football player
in these areas heading into your number two.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Just being smarter man, Just just being smarter about you know,
how I'm playing and how offenses are trying to attack me,
and knowing you know where the weak spots off our
coverages are, and you know, not not giving up things
that you know I shouldn't give up.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
Just playing smarter all around.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
I imagine I know that folkus on getting the football
too right. And I'm sure you were guy that got
the football a lot in college. And I'm going to
break the break of the wall here. So I think
it was the third O t A. You gotta pick
and all I do. I hear Brian Dables screaming at
you from the middle of the field. It's not the
first time you've done that. You get so you like,

(05:51):
are you pumped that they have the opportunity to do a.

Speaker 5 (05:53):
Little bit more of that percent?

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Man, that's always a goal every single time I go
out there. But yeah, they's gonna give me some stuff
about that, cause I ain't getting done last year. But
I'm just gonna get a bus this year, and so
he can he can shut up by it.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Than I appreciate you that very much.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
The Giants Total Podcast is brought to you by Citizens,
the official bank of the Giants. From game day celebrations
to your everyday financial needs, Big Blue fans can get
the most out of every moment with Citizens. Go to
Citizens bank dot com slash Giants. Howd up get in here?
If you're lined up here, you gotta go over the
middle with at the score? Great? How do we make
that happen? I don't know, Bud Citizens does it makes

(06:30):
sense of your money? With Citizens Official Bank of Eli Manning.
Now we're joined by one of the newest members of
the Giant Safety Javon Holla, Jamon, what's up, dude?

Speaker 4 (06:39):
What's going on? Man?

Speaker 1 (06:39):
So we talked to you when you got here. You're
really excited. What is the experience been like? Did it
match what you kind of thought it was gonna be
when you got here?

Speaker 4 (06:45):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (06:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
I think I think everybody on the team and in
the organization has has done a great job of, you know,
welcoming me, and I feel at home, and so I'm
really enjoying myself, and I think everybody here is you know,
they're really good people and we're all one mind, you know,
going to one direction.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
How about the defensive scheme? Has it met what you
thought it was going to be? How has it been
like trying to.

Speaker 5 (07:03):
Figure it out?

Speaker 4 (07:04):
It hasn't been too complicated.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
I think they do a good job of keeping simple,
but while also you know, reaching the certain you know,
aspects of you know, how they're trying to attack an offense.
I think we do a good job of detailing the
small things and emphasizing them. But you know, at the
end of the day, everything come back comes back to technique,
and I think coaching and coach Bowen do a great
job of making sure that you know, they emphasize our

(07:26):
principles and what they want to see from us, while
also allowing us a room to grow within the defense.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Yeah, I think Shane was very excited to bring you
in Pulse and a dbo in. You know, when you
play a zone heavy scheme, there's gonna be a lot
of disguise, and I think it helps having veterans to
do that. Are you seeing some of those disguised aspects
even in the spring, where you guys are trying to
show one thing and then post snap you're rotating to
something else, or try to make that quarterback think once
or twice before they make a decision.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
Yeah, you know they're they're slowly trickling in a lot
of the time early in the spring, you know, you're
just trying to get comfortable with the defense and see
you know, where everybody's feet land. And then you know,
these last couple of days, as we've gotten out there,
we've been able to you know, add some disguises, add
some you know, put a little sugar on top, just
to you know, give the quarterback something differency.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
I know you're excited to put a Tyler Newman when
you got here. Now that you've been in a meeting
room with him, seeing how he texts and how his
mind works, what has it been like kind of learning
about him.

Speaker 4 (08:14):
It's great, it's great.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
I had a coach tell me that everybody needs every
every other safety needs. You know, there's caddies, and then
there's golfers and and a lot of the time in
golf or in football as well, you know, you have
one guy who's a golfer and he's just like athletically
there and he can go and get it. And then
you have a caddy who is both athletically there but mental.
On the mental side, you know, he can control the defense,
he can communicate. I don't think either of us are golfers.

(08:37):
I think both of us are caddies, and I think
Tyler does a great job of both using his intelligence
to take advantage of the pre snap while also communicating
and making.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
Things clear for the defense.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
I think it's you know, it's been it's been nice
to see a young talent like that and and how
high his ceiling is and he's very, very motivated. So
I'm really happy to be able to, you know, help
help guide him and and help bring him along because
he's he's real Uh, he's real gifted.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Do you feel like you're completely interchangeable where both of
you guys can do every job that you need to
do as a safety.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
I think so. Yeah, I definitely think so. I think
that's the you know, part of the reason why they
brought us in. I think as new grows, he's gonna
become even more you know, of an interchangeable safety. But
I think he's where he is right now in the
short time. I mean, it's it's it's phenomenal to see
how you know, confident he is back there, and how
successful he can be when he's communicated.

Speaker 4 (09:26):
He's clear and he's able to just react.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
And I got to imagine the ability to be interchangeable
is what gives the defensive coordinator freedom, right because if
the defense, if the offense rather doesn't know, all right, well,
this guy's always the strong, this guy's always the free,
then that opens up so many doors for what you
guys can do, right Yeah, for.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
The front offense, I mean it adds a foggy level
of clarity, you know what I mean, Like it's not
so clear who's doing what, so I think, you know,
for a defense, it definitely opens up a lot more
and the ability for us to just kind of show
a shell and then get to whatever we need to
get to.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
So they're new for you, but they're new for the
Giants too. You have a new defensive back coach and
a new quarterbacks coach.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
Here.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
What has it been like in the room. How do
they run the room and kind of how do they
try to bring you guys all together so you're on
the same page.

Speaker 4 (10:08):
Yeah, so so em And.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
And JB, Mark Ottmanuel being m Yes, Mark.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Carmanuel, Jeff Burris and H and Pops Mike Mike Adams.
They all three of them do a phenomenal job working together.
I think coach m is kind of the spearhead for.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
For what we're what we're doing.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
And then uh, JB and Pops are you know, his
right hand and left hand, and they're you know, as
he's talking in front of the room, they're giving small
points to certain guys and it's a great mix. You know,
there's never a single voice that they all have different
opinions and they all share opinions with each other, and
you know, it's a it's a well, it's a well
rounded thought process. You know, Jeff jb was first round

(10:47):
pick for the Colts, and Am spent years in the
league and also on Super Bowl winning teams, So there's
a lot of knowledge. And there's and Pops as well
as like eleven thirteen years in the league. So there's
a lot of knowledge of dB and there's a lot
of knowledge in a room, and they're definitely able to,
you know, share those tidbits to us over their years.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
All right, final question. You've been around teams that have
had a lot of success, You've been around the teams
that have struggled. When you take a look at this defense,
do you think this group has something to it where
you guys can and this team where you guys can
be pretty good this year?

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Yeah? Absolutely absolutely.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
I think that the accumulation of talent that we have,
the work ethic that the guys are putting, and the
overall attitude towards both coaching, the scheme and how we're
running things, I think we're going to be We're gonna
have some success for sure.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
You've found a home course yet in Jersey or.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
No, there's a couple of courses. Man, I get out
the forest hill, a lot upper Montclair. I was at
Pregnus Filer's Elbow. I mean, there's there's a lot of
good courses. I'm staying over in Hoboke and Weehawking area,
so I'm a little bit farther, but I don't mind
the drive. Playing old Bridge today one of the newer
courses down in a not South Jersey but a more
southern area. So I'm excited though I'm excited to play Scarsdale.

(11:57):
There's plenty of courses.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Man.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
I played Scarsdale yesterday or two days ago, shot eighty two,
so I'm coming around. I'm hoping to break to break
eighty real soon. I mean not broken eighty yet, not yet.
I shot eighty at Somerset Hills and it's really because
like small blow up holes, and it's usually because I
make a wrong decision to like, you know, grab whatever
club too aggressive, So yeah, you know what I mean, like, oh,

(12:19):
I can go for it, but just play the smart shot.
Play the smart shot. So coming soon, breaking eighty coming soon,
Keep working on it, keeping out.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
If you want to know how to manage two minutes
of crunch time football, I'm your man. But if you're
wondering about a long term financial plan.

Speaker 4 (12:31):
You should talk to citizens. Hey, I can also talk
long care.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
I'd like to learn about ANLIA routine.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
Yes, I knew I could help make sense of your
money with citizens. And now we're joined by one of
the giants, very talented safeties, Dan Belton, Dane Hawaii.

Speaker 5 (12:44):
Man, I'm doing well. How about you? Man?

Speaker 1 (12:46):
So watching you in the spring, You've been all over
the football. Dude, you've got your hands on at a ton.
Why is it click for you? Do you think this
spring where you've been so active around the football?

Speaker 5 (12:56):
Yeah, just building on what I'm I'm accustomed to doing.

Speaker 6 (12:58):
Uh, you know, going back to like we've talked about
in the past, to college and coming into the NFL.
It's just a priority of mind to get the ball
and create turnovers. And it's fun being able to capitalize
on the on the moments and do it this spring.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Now, that's that has always been a knack for you.
You've always been able to get around the football. Is
that an anticipation thing?

Speaker 5 (13:17):
Is it?

Speaker 1 (13:17):
Is it your physical skill set? What do you think
allows you to be around the football as much as
you are.

Speaker 5 (13:21):
I think it's a combination of everything.

Speaker 6 (13:23):
I mean, you got to have multiple assets to to
be able to create turnovers. Uh one, just you know,
the more time in the league picking up on concepts
and learning things, and also just keep training you know, hands, feet,
you know, anticipation and break breaks coming out of backpedal
and things like that. So I think it's you know,
just all coming together and it's fun being able to
do that.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
And I think it's surprising a little bit only because
the Giants have a bunch of new quarterbacks this year.
So it's not like you not like you know, you
practice as Daniel Jones for two years, you knew what
he was going to do, right, these guys are all new.
How has it been trying to run your defense against
three quarterbacks that you haven't really done that before yet?

Speaker 5 (13:57):
In practice? It's been a challenge, but it's been fun.

Speaker 4 (13:59):
You know.

Speaker 5 (13:59):
That's that's what you know, the league is about.

Speaker 6 (14:01):
You know, every week you're facing a different quarterback that
has different skill sets and different you know, tendencies, and
it's fun being able to see different arm angles in
our own practice, especially with you know, the guys we have.
You know, every quarterback is extremely capable. They're playing well,
and they throw it a little bit differently. So it's
fun just even watching film on them and trying to
get you know, a three step job or like whether
they try to look you off and how they do that,

(14:22):
the arm angle on deep balls, things like that. It's
been fun. And you know, the spring's been fun.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
You mentioned deep balls. It seems like a priority has
been set forth. They push the ball down the field
a little bit. They've been throwing deep a lot in
practice for safety, you guys, the last line of defence.
Has that been a fun challenge for you trying to
slow that part of the offensive game down.

Speaker 6 (14:39):
It's been fun, but it also it has been hard
some days, you know, where they're taking their sides for sorry,
and I mean the skill set we have on offense,
with those quarterbacks being able to throw in the vertical
route runners that we have. You know, it's it's a
fun combination and you know, it's definitely a challenge for us.
It's only going to make us better on defense, and
it's gonna be fun for us to watch during the season.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
You've used word fun a bunch. Has it been fun
also seeing how it looks like they might try to
utilize the three safeties that you guys have now between you,
Javaon and Tyler and kind of rotate you and put
you in different spots depending on the situation.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
Yeah for sure. I mean, we'll see what happens during
the season.

Speaker 6 (15:10):
But you know, all three of us can obviously play,
have shown to play good football, so you know, all
three of us will help the team. So it's gonna
be fun to see what happens and how Shane can
kind of use us and and help us to win games.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
Without giving away too many exoz thos in the scheme.
Will there be opportunities for the three you guys to
be on the field at the same time.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
And we'll see.

Speaker 6 (15:28):
We'll see what when the season comes and how we
can all pair up together.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
How has it been with Javon in the building and
kind of learning from him and giving all his experiences.

Speaker 5 (15:35):
Good.

Speaker 6 (15:35):
Yeah, it's a great dude, a great guy, and it's
been fun having him in the room and going out
to practice and just kind of picking up on what
he's he's learned so far in the league and just
go from there.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
Have you seen Tyler grow a lot heading into a
second year.

Speaker 5 (15:47):
Yeah for sure.

Speaker 6 (15:47):
I mean I feel like the room itself has grown
tremendously from the past years I've been here, and you know,
it's fun seeing it's good seeing guys go from rooky
year the second year and that that jump and that
you know, transition period and how they can take what
they've learned from rookie year and apply to make themselves better.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
How have you seen yourself improve and get better heading
into year three now?

Speaker 5 (16:05):
Oh a lot?

Speaker 6 (16:05):
Just strength training, being able to you know, run all day,
conditioning wise, just continue to improve on some things I
need to work on, and being able to play multiple
positions and helping guys, you know, learn playbooks and new
guys and just understand why we do things. And it's
been helping me learn even more the things that I
feel like I knew, just strengthen that knowledge and you know,

(16:25):
just keep getting better.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
Yeah, you mentioned this before. How much of it it
being in your third year? Is playing faster? Not because
you're physically faster, but because you're seeing things faster.

Speaker 5 (16:35):
Oh, that's that's the name of the game.

Speaker 6 (16:36):
I mean, there's so many guys you look at where
you know, obviously speed is huge, but you look at
guys that don't have necessarily the numbers you want, But
are great all pro players.

Speaker 5 (16:44):
It's you know, that that mental game.

Speaker 6 (16:45):
If you can play fast mentally and see things and
pick up on things quicker helps you play faster and
make plays even if you don't have that necessarily you
know physical attribute that other guys have, but you can
play faster than them because you understand the game.

Speaker 5 (16:58):
So that's a huge part.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Your second there is very young. Last year, you had
a couple of veterans of this off season, Paulson the
Deeble comes in, Javon Holland comes in. Have you been
able to notice even the spring Shane Bowen has been
willing to maybe expand and do a little bit more
on the back end in terms of disguising post snat
movement pre snat movement because you have some guys that
have been around the block a couple more times in
the league.

Speaker 6 (17:18):
It's hard to tell right now just because you know,
with Shane, even though he was here last year, like,
we're changing a little some things up in the in
the scheme just to you know, fit some guys that
we have and to be a little better than we
were last year. So you know, right now we're really
nailing the details and getting that and I feel like
once China Camp comes, we'll be able to, you know,
maneuver and do different things to change the picture on
the quarterback.

Speaker 5 (17:37):
But I feel like we have the guys in the
room to do that.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
I'm not going to ask for details business You're not
going to give them, and you shouldn't give them. You
mentioned there'd be some changes in the scheme based on personnel,
right you know, you see a guy like Paulsen, you'll
come in, big guy. He played a lot of pressing
in New Orleans. Do you feel like you guys have
the personnel to mix zone and man much more liberally
than maybe you have before, given all the types of
