Speaker 1 (00:02):
The following is a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
This is Girls Talk Boys Talk, presented by Invisilne, trusted
by over five hundred NFL players for their winning smiles,
and broadcasting live from Dallas Cowboys World headquarters at the Star.
Now your host, Nicole Hutchison.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Good morning, Cowboys Nation. Welcome into Girls Talkboys Talk, presented
by in Viziline, here live from ox Star, California. I'm
your host, Nicole had just sent alongside Brianna Aldridge and
Christy Scales Isisham Morrison is currently on the plane heading
back to Dallas. So safe travels to our girl, Aisha.
But the Rams Canada, Oxnard and the Cowboys finally got

(00:56):
that first test that they needed, you know, finally going
to go up again another team other than themselves. And
I just want to get y'all's overall thoughts before we
dive into the takeaways from practice. Christy, I'll go with you.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
I'll say there's a lot of good coaching tape. Yes,
there's a lot to evaluate. We should say that we
had a little bit of a division of labor yesterday.
I concentrated more on the offense. You guys concentrated more
on defense. So we'll talk about that in different segments,
but the main thing was it was a chance for
the ones on both sides to get the work because

(01:30):
you know, the Dacks, the Pickens and the Tyler Smith's
and the CD Lambs, they're not going to be playing
in preseason games, so it's just so important to get
reps against another team because that's all they're going to
see against another team until they line up in the
Thursday night opener at Philadelphia. But some of the young
guys I think got a little bit of a baptism

(01:52):
and that's a good thing. And like coach Schottenheimer said,
well they all say, you know, some good things, some bad.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
But he talked.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
About errors and the run offense with the blocking Blitzer's
coming through. There were a lot of flags thrown yesterday,
but that's something that the coaches asked the officiating crews
to do. And the other thing was half of the
practice was scripted both sides McVeigh and Schottenheimer, and then

(02:23):
the last half was unscripted where they were just calling
what they wanted. So I think we got a nice
balance that way.

Speaker 5 (02:30):
Yeah, Well, I will say the good thing about joint practices,
there's no winner or losers. There's just a lot of
lessons basically what Chrissy just said, A lot to learn.
I know Brian Schoenheimer is probably going through the film
and scratching his head on a few things, but I
feel like this is what it's all about.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
It's early.

Speaker 5 (02:48):
Like you said, we got to see some players that
were not going to see these next three preseason games
going up. I think overall, my biggest takeaway was the physicality.
That's something that Shatnenheimer's been really adamant about, right. I
felt like the rams on both sides of the ball
and the trenches was brought the physicality. I feel like

(03:10):
that if anything, that was worrisome, if you will, because
that's been the theme of what you know, Oh this
is a physical team and what have you.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
I didn't see a lot of that, at least early on.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
The biggest thing I did see, like positive wise, we've
been talking about Cavante Turpin being utilized. I saw a
lot of that yesterday. That was exciting. To see Hunter
Lipke we've been talking about. I saw him do some
good things in there. So those are I feel like
when you look at the offense last year, we didn't
see that a lot. So if I had to get
like my favorites of the day, like I know, we

(03:44):
had some great things happening with CD and Pickens as expected,
but those were the two guys out there.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Jalen Brooks looked pretty good.

Speaker 5 (03:51):
I know there's a lot of tough decisions to be
made in that wide receiver room, but seeing him being
one of running with the ones and special teams, I
think that's a indicator that they are looking to keep
the man on the roster. So, like you said, Christy,
there's a lot of things to pull from from this one.
But my biggest thing was the physicality was just a
little disappointing.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
From Yeah, I mean and everything physical starts with the trenches,
but we're gonna start with the offensive side of the
ball for I'm gonna go to you, uh you, I
kind of mentioned already what stood out to you, but
I want to go more offensive line first because this
is a unit that, of course they're rebuilding. There's a
lot of young guys on that group, especially with Tyler
Guiden out you know for quite some time. Nate Thomas

(04:34):
had a little bit of a waking moment going up
against Jared Verse and a lot of those defensive linemen
on the rams. But just talk about what kind of
stood out.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
To you on that offensive line.

Speaker 5 (04:45):
Well, the first thing I was like, Man, I wish
Tyler Guiden was healthy and out there because this is
one of the better defensive fronts in the league that
you know, would be a good indicator to see where
he was at. So obviously Nate Thomas was getting was
getting some I think he was holding his own on
a lot. But again, I think what I was noticing
was like that initial block, Like keep in mind, the

(05:08):
old line wasn't just getting thrown out of their spots.
It was more of the schematically the timing, and that's
huge when you're when they're playing this zone.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Right, timing is everything.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
I know.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
I Usha always talks about that, which she'd be she'd
probably giving me the nod right now if she was
right here. But I would see, like I was keeping
an eye on Nate Thomas, and I would see him
that initial block was holding his own, and then someone
would cut in on the edge and then that was
a problem for Dak in a game there was a
couple instances where I'm like, Dak would be running for
his life, right, So thankfully they're not like throwing our

(05:39):
QB on the ground and things like that. Yeah, and
then keep in mind that Tyler Smith, uh, he wasn't
in there a ton he wasn't there, and he was
the usual Tyler Smith. I didn't I I didn't see
a lot of issues happening on the right side. I
will say, so you had the brock Hoffman in there
getting the rotations DJ bass. So it again, you're going
against one of the better defensive fronts and you don't

(06:00):
have who.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
The starting core would be.

Speaker 4 (06:03):
Yeah, and the front is different than what the Cowboys
have been practicing against. Yeah, that's what Coach Schottenheimer. He
did speak after practice maybe for about ten or fifteen minutes,
and what he pointed to on that where the communication errors.
So it's not you know, physically beat There probably were
place where, yes, they were, but I think the big

(06:25):
issue is the communication on that because that's where you
that's where you have to be on point.

Speaker 5 (06:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
And I talked to Tyler Booker, well, he spoke to
the media first and then I kind of pulled him
aside and asked him about that, just because that's.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Something that I really wanted to learn.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Was you know, when you're giving so many different looks
and the way that the Rams run things. They sometimes
do a five man front, they'll bring two linebackers down
to help with protection, or they'll do a three down front.
So he said that sometimes I'm out on an extra
island by myself and you have to really really communicate.
So it is a little bit harder for those offensive linemen.

(07:00):
But I mean it's something that'll obviously come with time,
and hopefully it does. But moving on to the running backs,
this is an identity that you know, Shaddy wants to establish.
He wants to be able to, uh be productive in.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
The run game. Did anything stand out to you.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
I'll go so more with uh Jaden Blue and Javonte
Williams cause they did kind of split at first team
and second team reps. Christy you can chime into.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Or uh, yeah, yeah, have a brief.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
Yeah, Well, I would say, uh, overall, the run game
was the down point. Uh, don't matter who was out there.
I will say the first big run if you will,
which I think was maybe like a seven yard run
where finally found a little hole in open space.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
That was Javonte Williams for me.

Speaker 5 (07:42):
I know the unofficial depth chart doesn't really mean anything
at this point, but it if we were making a
game today, Johntay Williams would be running back one. It's
not totally fair cause Miles Sanders, of course, is you know,
working back. But I think, uh, Jayden Blue is making
a case for himself and I'm I'm excited to see
what those two can do. But it's kind of hard

(08:02):
to give right now because the old line is so
much out of sync and it takes time for teams
when you get to September football, like, it takes time
for most teams across the league to get into that
rhythm with the old line. And I think it was
asked to shoddy. You know, you guys are putting so
much emphasis on this run game, but really things didn't
get going until the CDs and the pickings started to

(08:25):
and then the run game. Is that more of what
this identity of the offense is. And I think that's
what the identity of the offense is going to be, at.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Least least in the beginning.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
Yeah, instead of the run setting up the pass that
I think the pass is going to have to set
up the run because the passing passing game is the
strength and there's nothing wrong with that, and that's whatever works.
It was just kind of disappointed. You mentioned Miles Sanders
when able to practice, they held him out, and then
Do susmissed what a week and a half now, and
he started off with a strong week, So I don't

(08:56):
know how much we really learned in terms of like
running rotation and how they want to work them when
two of your guys are out. And then Hunter Lipke,
as we've talked about several times on the show the
last couple of weeks, how he's kind of doing a
lot of tight end as well. So you know, you
kind of at this point of practice can when you

(09:17):
have your joint practice, and we've had joint multiple joint
practices in the past. But I thought, Okay, this this
is really going to give us a clue. But it
really did. In terms of the running backs just happened.
Two of them not available.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Yeah, and Phil Maffa, I mean, I think there were
some some good runs somewhere.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
He kind of couldn't see the whole quite well.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
But I think that he's kind of growing into his
own as well, obviously getting some more opportunities with Deuce
and Miles standers out and Javonte Williams Jayden Blue kind
of sprinkled in.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
First team reps.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
But the receivers, that's kind We're just going to go
down the entire roster, okay.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
But other receivers.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
Obviously Jeorde Pickens had two touchdowns in the red zone,
but two of them had penalties for called for penalties,
but again Shoddy made it clear that he wants the
rest to call everything, but just talk about, you know
the difficulty that it made that It makes it for
you know, any defense in terms of having to Now
you've got to make sure you cover thor Figgins and

(10:17):
you also got to make sure you cover cbam And
how difficult was that for you?

Speaker 2 (10:21):
And I would not want that job.

Speaker 5 (10:23):
And Shoddy said, when those two guys are on the field,
you can see, you know, the struggles defensively, and I
think the exciting part is that piece, that second dynamic
receiver was missing last year and now you have that.
And then like I mentioned, Turpin was I don't know
how many darkest sturfing guy yesterday, but it was a lot.
So just seeing how involved in emphasis that they're putting

(10:43):
him in there is is just it's it's up. It's
very uplifting when we're talking about this offense. I just
I can't wait to see what he does in space.
And then I saw, you know, Jake Ferguson getting an
open space.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
That's not a lot we saw last year.

Speaker 5 (10:56):
It was a more a lot a lot of slant
short passes, so that was kind of uh exciting to
see as well. But I just think the Dak in
the Pickens chemistry just continues to build.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
And you saw that CD, my f I think that
might've been my favorite play.

Speaker 5 (11:11):
I'm sure you guys have seen the clip where they
have someone kind of disguising he's two inside. CD sees
it and he dips out and throws up the finger,
not even looking, and Dak hits him. And even if
you watch the play like in slow mo, looks like
Dak was kind of saw a little late, and it's
still hit on the money and CD's down the line.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
That was probably my favorite play of the day.

Speaker 5 (11:33):
And then it's unfortunate obviously the flags on Pickens uh
to TD's there.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
I think they were like back to back are pretty
close together.

Speaker 5 (11:40):
But uh, that's what Shotty wants. He wants you to
throw the flags he wants. Obviously you talked about it
last show, how penalized this team uh was last season.
So again a g I I liked what the splash
the splash plays. I mean, this is going to be, Uh,
this is gonna be a past catching type of team.

Speaker 4 (11:59):
On your per the play you reference where c D
throws up the things, that's well, but that's the thing. See,
we didn't have that last year with him not in camp,
and even you could argue early early, early part of
the regular season. So that's why it's so important for
these guys to be out here working together. And then
when it comes to tight ends. You mentioned Ferguson and

(12:20):
again I'm watching defense, you guys are watching offense. But
we didn't like have a fight. But there was just
a teeny teeny bit of a frac us, right and
Luke scoon Maker what I was the nicest guy on
the planet.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
How that happened?

Speaker 6 (12:33):
I had to, hey, you gotta he's not gonna back
down there anybody, But are you Luke your waffle house
roster that was calling it her roster looks like a
waffle house many.

Speaker 5 (12:44):
But I was like, I was like, Nicole, let me
see her. And I was like schoolmaker. I was like,
oh my goodness, on business, you need it from your
tight ends.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
And when you have a guy like Jake Ferguson who
gets shippy, I mean, hey, they're not gonna play.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
And then Lindael's is hyping. That was the best part too. Yeah,
I see.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
The one thing though, of concern, just because you know,
you know the goal of the deal is to have
the coach pultape to you know that the young guys
can really learn from. But let's find out more about
Joe Milton's thumb, because he has the great throw sixty
five yards in the air to Jalen Brooks for the

(13:24):
highlight play of the day, and then what five maybe
six plays later, five plays later, hits that thumb on
his throwing hand on a helmet and it's held out
of the rest of practice, mainly as a precaution. But
they say that, you know, they're hopeful that he can play.
We're all hopeful he can play in preseason. But wow,
wouldn't that be something if they have to limit him

(13:46):
in these preseason games that would be I mean, that's
one of the whole points of preseason. Will Greer hopefully
got to play the most he's going to play this
summer yesterday filling in for Joe Milton, because really one
of the purposes of these three preseason games is to
know if Joe Milton is gonna, you know, can you
rely on him as a number two going into the
regular season.

Speaker 5 (14:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
I didn't see the instant contact.

Speaker 5 (14:08):
When I came over, I saw him with the trainers
and then I kind of saw him doing this. He's
throwing water on it and trying to clinch. I was
hoping he would go back in. But it from what
Jerry Ann Shanheimer both said it, they played it down
a lot, So that made.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Me feel kind of good.

Speaker 5 (14:24):
But most of these guys out here aren't gonna, you know,
want eyes drawn and hype up an an injury. But
like you said, Christy, I really hope it's what they're saying,
which is they're not worried about it.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
It's being evaluated.

Speaker 5 (14:35):
So I hope there's uh when we hear from coach
later on today, I hope there's a positive update, cause man,
he was he was killing it.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
And he's all out there for a few series yesterday and.

Speaker 4 (14:45):
There's no practice today, so that's even more time for you.
And Yeah, I kind of rested up and get some
extra rehab.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
I wanna go back to the receivers. Uh, let's start
with Jalen Brooks.

Speaker 7 (14:55):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
We got a chance to hear from him post.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
Practice, and you know the way that he he's kind
of his opportunities he mentioned his opportunities haven't been the
same this training camp just because that bide receiver room
is loaded and so but he's he's kind of stayed
mentally one prepared and just understanding the fact that like
he's got to be prepared every single rent because the.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
Opportunities won't come often.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
But when you see a guy like that, who you
know has stepped up in big moments last year the
year before when needed, and you know, he obviously comes
up with a nice what was his sixty five yard
bomb from Joe Milton? Just talk about Jalen Brooks in
the camp that he's having. It could be both of you, ladies,
And just where do you see him kind of standing

(15:44):
or stacking up in that wide receiver room.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
Well, he got he ended up getting about thirty percent
of the offensive snaps overall last year, just one start,
but played in fourteen of the games and has really
become a key special teams guy. He's he's one of
your gunners. So I don't worry so much about him
necessarily making the fifty three man roster because he's working

(16:08):
number ones on teams. But I think it's more of
how much he can fit into the actual rotation. We
talk about Turpin, you know how much he's going to
be used. And the unofficial depth chart right now shows
Jalen Tolbert as the number three, and I think that
that's correct. If you had to stack it up right now,
I would put Talbert third. But you know, I think

(16:30):
Brook's averaged like fourteen yards to catch. He's got the
good speed, and he's got the relationship with Dak. Although
we didn't get to play most of the regular season
with Dak last year because of Dak's injury. But he's
a kid that you're rooting for. He's very serious minded,
and you know, I have not talked. We have a
chance later today to talk with the assistant coaches again,

(16:54):
and so I'm really looking forward to talking to junior
Adams who's the new Cowboys wide receivers coach and get
thoughts specifically on on Jalen Brooks, because he liked Tolbert
is kind of one of the quiet guys and it
was a flashy play yesterday for Brooks, but normally it's

(17:14):
not the flashy they're kind of the more solid, right
kind of guys, So sometimes they fly under the radar.
So that's why it's best to talk to the position
coaches to really find out, uh, what's being said in
the meeting rooms about these guys.

Speaker 5 (17:27):
Yeah, I agree a lot with christ what Christy just said,
because Schottenheimer actually mentioned, you know, with the with how
deep this wide receiver room is. What it comes down
to is consistency, and someone can't have a quiet day
and then have a great day and then go back
to being quiet. And it's funny because I think a
lot of people interpreted it as him talking about Jalen

(17:51):
Tolbert originally, right cause it's been like the splash plays
haven't been there for Jalen Tolbert. But Shottenheimer wanted people
to know like he's doing a lot of good things
that are going unnoticed. I think that is pretty much
the same one. We're talking about a Jalen Brooks as well,
and it's unfortunate last year that he didn't have his
you know that Dac was out most of the time,

(18:12):
but when he did go in there, he got the
job done. I think I remember one a couple of plays,
you know, things that go away, but that was let's
be real, that was most of the offense last year.
So I don't take too much into that. But I
think when your wide receiver three right now is looking
more like Jalen Tolbert Jonathan Mingo going head to head

(18:35):
that special teams, Like Christy said, it matters, it's gonna
keep you on the roster. You never know what happened
throughout the season, right this is football. We've seen it
out here early in camp, injuries happened. Jalen Brooks is
obviously a bigger body when you're looking at Little Turpin
and things like that. So it depends who you're going
up against and how they can use him. But I
think he's making it. He's making himself useful in a

(18:57):
way where you're you're gonna have to put me on
this team. And it seems like Schottenheimer, if he sees
value he's gonna find a way to use you.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
CJ.

Speaker 5 (19:06):
Goodwin has been doing some reps with the wide receivers
from OTA's out here multiple times, so I'm interested to
see what's happening with that. But that's another guy, that
veteran guy on the team that they like and they're
if they can use them somewhere else and find something
he's good at, they're gonna do it.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
And I think that's that's what's happening with Brooks as well. Well.

Speaker 3 (19:25):
The receivers also have to be consistent, but they something
that Shady's mentioned is they also have to help win
terms of protection protection as well and be selfless in
that aspect. So, uh, that's something we should also probably
figure out with the assistance, just kind of figuring out
like where these receivers stack up in that area as well.
But we're gonna talk about Cavonte Turpin just a little bit.

(19:46):
We're gonna take our first break and then we're gonna
talk deepens because there's a lot of things.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
To break down from joint practice as well.

All right, welcome into Girls Talk, Boys Talk, presented by
and visit Line Nicole Hodgson and Chrissy Scales and Rihanna Aldridge. Ladies,
before we talk defense, real fast Galante Turpin earning some
more opportunities. Why do you feel like that is so
obviously a speed But why do you feel like that
is so? Is it is confidence and maybe his route

(23:09):
running ability?

Speaker 2 (23:10):
What have y'all seen, ladies that has kind of struck you? Guys?

Speaker 4 (23:13):
Well, why is it important? Is that it's one more
headache for the defensive coordinators and time that they have
to spend planning and on the practice field, So you
don't have to play that card a lot. But the
fact that you have the card means that the opponent
has to be ready for it. So there's value just
in the threat of what he can do.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
But I think that.

Speaker 4 (23:37):
One of the reasons why camp has been so much
more fun to watch this year is we're getting to
see more of it now. I'm not saying you're going
to see any of that in preseason. Why would you
risk him and why would you show anything cool? But
just take our word for it that you know, if
you don't get to see training camp in person and
you only watch the preseason games, you know it be like, huh,

(24:00):
don't see a lot different. Well, there's a lot different
going on on the practice field, but you're never going
to show it in a preseason game.

Speaker 3 (24:06):
Yeah, he says it's gonna be pretty vanilla, so oh absolutely.

Speaker 4 (24:09):
And guys like Terp, I mean, you know exactly what
they can do, so why would you why would you
even play them?

Speaker 5 (24:15):
Yeah, Like I think last year proved he proved that
he could be a threat, that speed is something that
is God given talent. You can't you can't teach that,
and he did some amazing stuff. I think there was
frustration even from the fan base, like you know, this
offense is struggling. Why why are they not using Comante
Turpin more? And they're doing it now and they're doing

(24:36):
it a lot. Like I was looking at some rankings
that some of the writers had did well on what
receivers had won, and some of them had Kvanti Turpin
at the top of the list.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
That's how many reps he was getting.

Speaker 5 (24:45):
Like I was kind of in and out doing some
stuff for a different show, and every time I looked up,
it was Turping, you know, getting the reps.

Speaker 2 (24:55):
Just in the play action.

Speaker 5 (24:56):
He was getting some handoffs, open space and he was
now he.

Speaker 2 (25:02):
Was getting taken some hits. I will say that as well.

Speaker 5 (25:05):
But oh my goodness, prepared to see the Cavante Turpin show.
Like Chrisy said, when you have the CDs out there
able to read this defense throwing up the finger without
looking at Dak, you got the dak in Pickens chemistry
picking up and you just throw Turpin in there.

Speaker 2 (25:24):
That's just it's a nightmare for the other side.

Speaker 4 (25:27):
Yeah, and don't take our word for it. And I
have so many little stars in my notebook.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (25:31):
From Schottenheimer press conferences, Turpin on offense, the inside runs
are more like a punt return. And I know a
little guy like Turpin, we don't think of inside runs,
but he's getting those opportunities. And then another time, this
is back on the twenty third, so just the second
day of practice, Shaddy West asked about Turpin and The
first thing he said was no fear. Even though he's

(25:54):
the smallest guy on the field, he has absolutely no fear.
And with all that speed, he doesn't need a lot
of space. He's dynamic. We want to move him all
over the field.

Speaker 5 (26:04):
I would even argue that Turpin is the number three
wide receiver on this team. Like nothing to take nothing
away from Tolbert, but that's the usage that I expect
and that I'm seeing that he's that's the role he's
basically going to look like when you.

Speaker 3 (26:16):
Put him out there, he and run into Yeah, I
think his disadvantage is just his size. But when you
have speed like that, I mean, it creates different mismatches.

Speaker 2 (26:23):
Hopefully the size.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
Kind of I won't to say doesn't matter, but it
doesn't matter.

Speaker 4 (26:29):
But one last thing on Turpin. Just keep in mind
that one of the really big rules. We don't have
a lot of rule changes this year, but one of
them is on this dynamic kickoff return that got carried
over to this year. They did make a couple of
adjustments and the main one is if and if you
you know, don't kick it to the returner, then the

(26:52):
touchback is not going to be the thirty yard line.
It's going to be the thirty five yard line. That
is big, a big advantage. So that means that teams
are we're going to see a lot more returns this
year because you're not just going to touch send a
touch back if the other team's going to get the
ball with the thirty five yard line. So Turpin's going
to get even more opportunities as a as a kickoff

(27:14):
returner this year. So that rule change really benefits the
Cowboys more so than any other NFL team.

Speaker 3 (27:21):
All right, ladies, we're gonna switch over to defensive side
of the ball. Christy biggest takeaways? Would you see what
stood out? Oh?

Speaker 4 (27:28):
Lots of coaching tape. Well, here's the thing. Your Your
secondary was of course without Trayvon Diggs and Josh Butler,
Kaylen Carson, without Revel and without jan Ye Thomas. So
the first team cornerbacks were Abram Elim who still is
having a great camp, and Deron Bland. But Rams, just

(27:50):
like everybody else, there's so much time that you play
nickel that he when Bland moved inside to play nickel,
Andrew Booth was playing outside. So we got to see
a lot a lot of Andrew booth yesterday. That's one thing.
And the other thing when I say there's a lot
of good and a lot of bad, I'm gonna use

(28:11):
Troy Pride as a couple of examples here because we're
going to see a lot of Troy Pride, who's a
backup cornerback and number thirty two when he was with
the team. He got some playing time for the Cowboys
towards the end of last season, but there were a
couple of things where he had like a couple of
really really good plays, right Troy Pride, And then you
get into the last the final session of the joint

(28:34):
practice where he tackled DeVante Adams and there was a
hurry up and they throw a quick out to DeVante Adams.
He tackles him and bounds, meaning the clock is running,
and then gets a pass breakup on the very next play,
Jordan Whittington another one to the right side, but the
previous session had given up a big play. So it's

(28:57):
one of those mixed bags, but it's one where the
Cowboys coaches can build the confidence and say, hey, you
didn't do it here, but you did it here. And
there are about four or five players that I have
notes where it's basically the same thing. You missed a play,
but then you came back, so you know, coaching points,
but then able to point out positive things to build up.

(29:20):
But there were a couple of times Kyrone Williams, they're
really fine running back who signed a three year extension
for thirty three million dollars. So it was in a
very very good mood yesterday. There was there were some
times where like Jack Sanborn, DeMont Clark came down, there
were some good run fits, but there were other times

(29:40):
where Kyron was running past and pasted the second level.
So there was one where he got through on the
right side for a thirty five yard touchdown. And then
on the very next play, Sam Williams, stuff's in the
back backfield. So good and bad. But the red zone
defense I think left a lot to be desired. The

(30:05):
Rams were scoring a lot on that kind of some
miscommunication kind of things, letting some guys get free. How
do you let Puka nikoua free? And they well, well
they managed to do that yesterday. But and then Perry
On Winfrey had a couple of good good plays there.
He's a UFL guy Birmingham Stallions, so It's interesting because

(30:26):
some of the guys who've been very under the radar
stepped up and made a big play and that was
in the run game, and so we'll see if they
can carry that into the preseason action.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
Yeah, I wanted to ask about the defensive line, specifically
the edge rushers, because this is a group that has
stood out through camp so far, with guys like Donovan Azaraku,
Dante Fowler, Sam Williams himself. Just talk about those guys
and were they able to kind of create any havoc
at all, any problems.

Speaker 4 (30:54):
Yeah, there's one Donovan in particular there where he came
around the edge and of course, even though it's a
joint practice, you're still not going to sack the quarterback.
You're not going to touch him. And it was a
it was a long pass to DeVante Adams, but Donovan
pulled up. So would he have affected the quarterback if

(31:16):
he were if it were real game actions. So kind
of hard to tell on that, but I thought as
Roku looked pretty good. Mozzie actually did some snaps yesterday.
He had been pulled out of the previous walked off
the field with the trainers uh the previous practice. So
it was good to see.

Speaker 2 (31:35):
Him out there.

Speaker 4 (31:36):
But Sam Williams was very active and so, but it's
just kind of hard to tell with the pass rush
because they just can't follow through.

Speaker 2 (31:45):
They have to pull up.

Speaker 4 (31:45):
And we didn't see as we've seen in previous joint practices,
not just with the Rams, but with other teams where
they have specific pass rush drills where the offensive and
defensive lines are separately. You know, it's going against each
other in specific pass restrats. We didn't have that.

Speaker 2 (32:05):
Hanging out. I was enjoying the show, but I know
I need to be on the defensive side.

Speaker 5 (32:10):
It sounds like there's a lot of moving pieces happening
on over there.

Speaker 4 (32:14):
Hooker continued to show up. Yeah, he's had he's had
a really good camp, and I'm going through my notes
and just looking at some of the some of the things.
But yeah, just some miscommunications after you know, ships and
stacks in the end zone and things like that. That
and it's against second and thirteen guys. So but again,
the main thing is it's the coaching points that the

(32:35):
staff can told off.

Speaker 3 (32:36):
Of this cornerback room. Still a lot of concerns there,
just you don't have digs.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
The one Rebel Josh Butler and.

Speaker 3 (32:46):
Kayln Kayln Carson just talk about where do you guys
feel this cornerback room is. Guys like Troy Pride has
stood out, Andrew Booth had a couple of good days
in camp a couple of not so good days in Campbell.
Where do you guys feel like it stands right now?

Speaker 4 (33:03):
I think it's huge these three preseason games for Keemon
Hall guys like that, and it's so huge because you
got to remember it's not just Pride versus Booth or
it's the thirty one other teams that have four or
five cornerbacks who are on the roster bubble. I'm not
convinced that you know, our third, fourth, fifth cornerbacks are here.

(33:27):
They may be on other teams and being brought in,
you know, once roster cuts are being made. So that's
you can imagine the immense pressure on these guys who've
been in the league for a couple of years and
know the drill that just because you beat out the
guy who may be in front of you on the
depth chart on your own team, you're not safe because

(33:50):
the scouts are watching all these preseason games and you
know there'll be a board up there of players. There's
professional scouting as well as college scouting, and right now
the professional scouts this is this is a very tough
time for these roaster bubble guys because you got to
beat guys on thirty one other teams as well as

(34:10):
your own.

Speaker 2 (34:11):
Yeah, the secondary, the cornerback room.

Speaker 5 (34:13):
I mean, we've been talking about that all off season,
and I was surprised that there wasn't the urgency.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
I love saying urgency on just because, but the.

Speaker 5 (34:23):
Urgency to add some depth there, especially with all the injuries,
with the unknown time table when Trayvon Diggs the number
one is coming back, right, Kyrie Elam has been having
a great camp, But I just didn't think that was enough.

Speaker 2 (34:40):
And then was it Christian Matthews. I believe that they did,
and you.

Speaker 5 (34:43):
Know, there's yea, It's just it just felt like more injuries,
inviting more injuries to the team with more unproven talent,
if you will, in that area. If we if we're
noticing it in joint practices, what's going to happen when
we get to the regular season in and you have
teams that's that's that's gonna be the liability of this

(35:05):
of this team.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
It's a little bit scary.

Speaker 5 (35:09):
I think Jerry was asked about it yesterday after practice,
you know, like, hey, your secondary was clearly struggling.

Speaker 2 (35:15):
Is that something of an issue? Are you looking to
add there? And he's nope.

Speaker 5 (35:21):
You know so, I mean, obviously it's not gonna say, oh,
we're freaking out, but just the fact that they're not,
it doesn't seem like there's interests and there's faith in
that group right now. I know Andrew Booth, like you said,
was having a lot of reps. That's someone who struggled
a lot.

Speaker 4 (35:35):
But that's because of the injuries in front of him exactly. Rochelle,
who they brought in, was working third team on the
right side outside cornerback. And then should note that Israel Mukuamu,
who's shown position flex throughout his career, not just safety
but corner. He got a little bit of work both
outside and in the slot.

Speaker 3 (35:55):
I think it's also important for them to figure out
when it starts with darn Bland, what do they want
to do with him, because they'd be working him at
nickel and also boundary corner, and that'll kind of trickle
down to the rest of those that the tone will say, yeah,
what's around like a Michael Parson situation.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
In that room.

Speaker 3 (36:12):
But yeah, we're gonna take our second break though and
break down what was the biggest takeaway from camp?

Speaker 2 (36:19):
Who stood out? Who didn't stand out? Up next to
young girls, talk boys.

Speaker 3 (36:22):

Welcome back into Girls Talk, Boys Talk persenter in biz
line here live from Oxnard, California. Before we wrap up, though, ladies,
is there anything.

Speaker 2 (39:07):
And you could say nothing, I'm just asking the questions.

Speaker 3 (39:10):
Yeah, is there anything that you feel most confident confident in?

Speaker 2 (39:16):
Excuse me? Heading into the first preseason game.

Speaker 5 (39:19):
I am most confident that Dak Prescott is going to
have less pressure, meaning that his wide receivers it felt like,
and Christy, you could attest to this if you feel
the same, But I feel like CD's growth this year
is just doing this and I don't mean skill level,
I just mean uppear mentally and being able to read.

(39:42):
And I just don't feel like they were getting that
last year. I don't know if it's the coaching. I
don't know if it's just maturity. I don't know what
it is, but it just feels different. And I think
that is huge because, like you mentioned, now we just
added another piece with George Pickens. Now we got a
Cavante Turpin in there, We're utilizing Lippy a bunch more.

(40:03):
Somebody else might pop off that, you know, as a surprise.
But I just think that is going to be a
relief because I feel like Dak had to think too
much before it.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
Was all on his shoulders.

Speaker 4 (40:13):
Yeah, and this time last year he didn't have CD
because CD wasn't participating in training camp. But yeah, it
has been surprising how quickly George Pickens is just fit
right in with this. And the other thing is once
you get to the regular season another thing. Yeah, you've
got all those weapons, and if Jake Ferguson didn't have
the banged up need like he did last year, now

(40:34):
he's got the fat contract. I mean there are so
many weapons with this, but specifically for the preseason game
coming up, and I know that Friday we'll talk more
about some of the players that we want to see.
I think it's clear that with our injury situation, we
had a lot of backup guys or young guys going
against the Rams ones. Yep, Nate Thomas versus Jared Verse.

Speaker 2 (40:58):
I think that.

Speaker 4 (41:02):
He's a fine player for the Rams. He's their starter,
and it was rough early in practice yesterday for Nate.
Who's going to be starting at left tackle, especially if
Guidon's not one hundred percent to play him, Well, Nate'll
be going against versus isn't going to play in preseason,
just like the Cowboys don't play their first team guys.

(41:23):
So let's let's see Nate going against that and build
up that contients through these preseason games. And I think
it's going to look different. I hope it looks very different,
especially with the run game than what we saw in
the joint practice.

Speaker 2 (41:37):
What about defensive side of the ball.

Speaker 4 (41:40):
You know, I'm just curious as to who's going to
be out there. I think that that it'll be better
for the secondary in the preseason games, just for what
I mentioned before like Ezraku and these guys who are
getting a good pass rush, but you can't go through
with it, and the quarterbacks know that, so they're you know,
stay on their spot and delivering the ball because they

(42:02):
know they're not going to get hit by the pass
rush when they're being moved off the spot. The other
thing is Jimmy Garoppolo, because Matt Stafford has the sore back.
Jimmy Garoppolo and then Stetson Bennett are the quarter where
the quarterbacks working against this Cowboys defense yesterday. I don't
know if Garoppolo is going to play the preseason games,
but didn't Stetson Bennett throw what four or five interceptions

(42:24):
last year against the Cowboys. So again, we'll preview more
the preseason opener. But that's what I kept telling myself
yesterday was Okay, some of these guys they're going to
it's going to be a little more equal when it
comes to the preseason competition Saturday, as opposed to sometimes
you have your third and fourteen guys going against the

(42:47):
ones I know.

Speaker 2 (42:48):
We talked about.

Speaker 3 (42:49):
I think goes Monday. There's guys whose stock has kind
of risen over the course of camp. I want to
ask the opposite question. Whose stock was risen through the
past two weeks of camp and now it's kind of like, hmm, okay,
you kind of like took a little backstep a little bit.

Speaker 2 (43:08):
Who is that for you guys?

Speaker 3 (43:09):
If anyone after joining now, I don't know.

Speaker 5 (43:11):
If anyone's doing anything to the point where I think,
like the competition the decisions are actually going to be
hard across the board for some of those key positions.
I will say, not that it's not having a strong camp,
but I just see someone that just seems that's kind
of plateau and not making the jump. Would be the

(43:32):
Mazzie Smith situation. I just you know, at this point
in his career, I feel like the expectations have because
of being a first round, former first round draft pick,
continuously behind. But I think if if there's anything you know, worrisome.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
If you will, it's, Oklay, what is he?

Speaker 5 (43:48):
I haven't heard of him making any type of big
jump right now, and I think that's you know, a
little bit concerning in that aspect. But I don't I
don't know if anyone has like that major drop off
just from from here.

Speaker 1 (44:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (44:02):
I mean, you have a guy like awesome Richards getting
leap frauged for at left tackle by Nate Right. But
I don't know that that means that there's like a
loss of faith in him. You know, Richards was still
out their first team when they were doing jumbo and
he has a position flex to do guard. But yeah,

(44:23):
it's like hmmm, yeah. The first thought was when Tyler
Guidon leaves practice, it's like, oh, well, certainly it'll be
awesome Richards, and it's no, it's Thomas. So yeah, that
could be that they need to see Thomas Moore and
he had been you know, he'd missed last year due
to a knee injury, and so now he now they
get a chance to see him, so they want to

(44:45):
give a shot and know what they have, and they
know a little bit more about awesome.

Speaker 5 (44:49):
That's what I felt like it was because it happened
so quick to the point it was like, well, what
could Austin Richards could have done in that you know,
one day span. So I feel like more on the
hint of okay, let's see what this young guy can do.
Maybe his body type is more built for what they're
looking for in that position.

Speaker 2 (45:04):
Because it just happened so fast.

Speaker 5 (45:05):
I didn't really hear like, oh, he was just you know,
getting rent or anything like that. And he's made it
known that he's more comfortable on the other side as well,
so that is something to keep an eye on, though
one hundred percent.

Speaker 3 (45:17):
All right, Well, preseason kicks off in four days. The
countdown is absolutely on, but that'll do it. Here for
Girls Sock Boys Talk Present Vive is the line. We
will be back here on Friday at eight am, so
make sure to wake up with us because we will
be here right nearly.
