(00:24):
I like saying that. That's fun.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Wow, you just sing it a little.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
That's right. I'm becoming a broadcast professional or something or something. Yes,
you can enter the Sweet SIPs Sweepstakes between now and
October twenty six for your chance to win two tickets
to the Deep Eddie Vodka Sweet for the November ninth

because you've got five fans will win two tickets each.
(00:50):
You get access to the one Carolina Sweet, the BP experience,
the Deep Eddy swag, all the good things and delicious
Deep Eddie cocktails, which I'm sure many people are enjoying
right now. It's a good time. So thanks to our
friends at Deep Betty for hooking us up with that.
And you know, enter to win for your chance to
(01:11):
get in that Deep Eddy Suite, which I might try
to sneak into you ever know, I bet.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
You could really hit your stride writing wise, if you
were in the deep Betty suite.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Yeah, I got stories to tell you about that later on.
It's involving other people, not me. A friend, I'll call
Stan I think, let's do that. But anyway, it's Dolphins Week,
ladies and gentlemen. The Miami Dolphins are coming to town
and a very different Dolphins team than we saw Monday.
(01:40):
You know what we were thinking about Monday when we
recorded this podcast last Unfortunately, the just the catastrophic injury
to Tyreek Hill. That kind of changes a lot of
things for the Dolphins, obviously, But you know, first and foremost,
hope he gets well. He's one of the more electrifying
players in the NFL. You hate to see a guy
leave a stadium in a wheelchair the way he did
(02:02):
the other night. So that's a tough one. But the
Carolina Panthers also have stuff of their own. They've got
to work gone and that's been kind of the focus
this week. It's been interesting, whether it's Dave Canalis or coordinators,
everybody kind of talked about Monday Tuesday as like a
quarter season reset. I mean they really looked at their
(02:23):
own stuff. They spent a lot of time talking about
what they were trying to do, and opponent stuff almost
became secondary for a couple of days there because they
had their own stuff they wanted to get working on.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
You hear teams say that from time to time, like oh,
we got to go back to the basics. They I
thought it was interesting they never actually used that phrase
this week. It was more so about evaluating what has worked,
what has not worked. Does that mean scheme, does that
mean personnel? Does that mean you know? Dave can Alce
mentioned wanting to push the ball downfield a little bit
(02:54):
more so. It wasn't anything about like, oh, we're not
doing the basics right. They feel like they've got that.
It's about how do we become more and how do
we you know, brad Zich use the phrase today like
focus and refocus. How do we focus in on what
we want to do and then make sure that we're
refocusing each play during the game, And he used he said,
(03:17):
you know, ironically enough, the New York Jets and Miami
Dolphins had a great example, and then the Panthers had
a great example too. The New York Jets moved right
downfield on the Miami Dolphins in their first drive Monday
night and then fumbled the ball on the red zone.
That was losing focus, and he said, you know, then
we had to face the truth of that also being
the case with our own tape. Like moved right down
(03:39):
the field on the New England Patriots with that first
drive score pretty easily, and then after that they don't
go more than thirty three yards on any other drive
until that last touchdown drive of the game and in
the last couple of minutes. Sure, And so can you
focus on what you want to do and then refocus
play after play so that you're not losing yourself within
the game, right?
Speaker 1 (03:59):
I think not to dip too deeply back into New
England because we've turned the page on that one. But
you saw early in that game when Ryan Fitzgerald hits
a goal post with an extra point. You get a
stop then on defense, but then you punt and they
return it for a touchdown, and there was kind of
a sense of ugh at that point. And that's what
they're talking about. They can't have that ugh. They got
(04:21):
to stay on the appropriate level each play. And I
think it's interesting hearing those guys talk about how locked
in they are on that kind of stuff this week,
because it's the kind of thing you have to teach
a young team how to do. I mean, resilience is
not something you are born with. That's a muscle you
develop over time. That's a thing that a football team
(04:43):
has to learn. And right now the Carolina Panthers are
in the spot of trying to teach people how to
lock in next thing, next, you know, flush it, move on,
and those kind of things because they haven't been in
those positions often enough to know them inherently.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
And I also want to add just on that. You know,
Dave Canalis has mentioned a couple of different times Bryce
has become really good at that. You know, Bryce Young
can can come off the play, come off the field
after a bad play, address what went wrong with him
with Canalis while looking at the tablet, and then completely
move on. He does have a young crew around him,
(05:21):
especially the receiving corps, which you know, one point on
Sunday was Dalevion Campbell, Tedoro and McMillan, Hunter Renfro who
is a veteran. But then also I know I'm forgetting
somebody no that was That's about it.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
That was pretty much it. Bryce and Tremaine was in there.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Bryson Tremaine. That's who else I was forgetting sorry, thank you.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
And I mean it was it was a thin crowd
and it's going to be a different looking crowd this week.
I mean, just to kind of recap the move, we
we got lots of new friends yesterday. Many people came
in the door with David Moore going on injured Reserve,
Chandler's viola going on injured Reserve. They made the moves Tuesday,
they waved injured daily Von Campbell he's on IR now
(06:04):
and then they and then they blah blah blah blah.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Release.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
That's the word I'm looking for. I word for a
living Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Uh waved DJ Johnson
from defense. So I mean there were moves on the
way out. There were guys coming in. They promoted DJ
Dallas and Travan Thomas from the practice squad. So there's
some reinforcements for special teams immediately with some of those
guys brought in. Jake Kurran, of course, tell me nine
(06:29):
things you know about Jake Curran. His name is spelled
j a k we're working on that night.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
It was funny. I was standing in the football hallway
last night and I saw like three of the new
guys all happened to converge at once, and they were
all like, it was like a little handshake circle. They
were all introducing themselves. Where'd you come from, Where'd you
come from? Where'd you And they were trying to figure
out who they might know of each other. And then
Bryce happened to walk by, so he stopped and introduced
(06:57):
himself to all of them. And you know, they were
just trying to make an because NFL world is small,
they were trying to make connections and figure out who
they might have trained, you know, with the cross with
each other. But it was funny watching them all like
converge and try to meet each other. It just happened
to be there.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Yeah, a lot of new faces. And you know it's
unfortunate because you put another right guard on injured reserve.
You know, Chandler was replacing Rob Hunt, who got through
two games before he was lost for the season. And
you know, that's a tough situation to be in. I
don't want to start thinking about somebody referenced twenty twenty
three to me, and I was like, don't you put
that evil on me, Ricky, Bobby when the Panthers used way,
(07:34):
way more right guards than a team should ever have
to use. But we're not talking about that. We're talking
about what's happening now. The first thing is Brady Christiansen
goes into starting lineup. I love Brady Christiansen's ability to
just be like, okay, I'll do that now. Yeah, I mean, here's.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
A guy's I'll go play that position.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
Yeah, he is believed to be and I'm still in
the process of the research on this, but I am
almost certain he is the the only person in franchise
history to have started at all five offensive line positions.
He's done that. He has started one game his rookie
year at right guard, where he's gonna be probably for
the foreseeable future now. And Brady has started one game
(08:15):
at right guard. He was next to Taylor Moten that game.
Do you know who else was in as a part
of that offensive line? This was his rookie season, that's
right one. Yeah, you're not gonna get this one. It's
the law Firm of pad Lfline at center, Dennis Daily
at left guard, and Cameron Irving at left tackles my
(08:35):
next guest. Yeah, it was, I know it was. That's
the first time I think we've ever referenced Dennis Daily
and Pad elf Line together on this podcast.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Out Dennis.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Yeah, those are all great guys, but not an ideal situation.
But Brady's good at handling those kind of things. In
talking about the new guys, Nick Sammik, who showed up
here a couple of weeks ago, he's gonna probably have
to be active this week even though he's still in
the process of learning, because you see him. He was
(09:04):
the guy they signed off Baltimore's practice squad a couple
of weeks ago. Hasn't been active for a game yet,
but he is this week because they're, you know, kind
of running out of dudes and they need him. But
they went from talking about one of the deepest offensive
lines in the league and bringing all your guys back
from last year now with a couple injuries, three dudes
on ir It's like, oh, that depth is being tested,
(09:26):
and you're fortunate to have a guy like Brady Christiansen
who can jump in at a moment's notice and plug
him wherever.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
That's what I was about to say, like, the depth
is being stressed, for sure, but this is why you
bring all of those guys back. You don't ever want
to lose Robert Hunt. He's such a huge piece of
this offense in this locker room, in that line, you
don't ever want to lose Robert Hunt. But if you're
going to and then you can roll in Chandler Savala
(09:52):
who has started games, and then now Brady Christiansen his
you're not putting somebody in there that has never played, right,
These guys have not only played, they've started, they've they've
appeared in a lot of games. And so you bring
back all those guys for a situation such as this. Now,
if something happens after that, then you might have to
(10:14):
start wringing your hands a little. But yeah, to your point,
the depth is being stressed, but I don't think it's
being exposed maybe the right word.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Yeah, it's almost like that bend, but don't break situation.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
That people have the depth to get to this point, right.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
I mean, this is still a good offensive line because
it's good at the tackles with Taylor Mote and Ikiakwan
who of course, Damian Lewis still over there at left
card he's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
At He's just quietly doing his jobs. That's so damius.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
He's just over there mauling people because that's what he
does and not saying a whole lot while wearing his
glasses looking like an accountant. Cade May's in the middle.
Played a lot of good football around here the last
couple of years with him at center. So still a
good group. It's just a group. It's had to adjust
on the fly. And that's kind of the situation to
your point, that you kind of prepare for. So Brady
(11:07):
Christian starting to right guard for the second time again.
I just love the fact that you know, he started
at all five positions. Not a lot of people have
done that. Bruce Matthews, the Hall of Famer, of course,
was able to start at all five, but very few
people are able to pull that off because, toolay, it's
a mental challenge more than anything else. I mean, because
(11:28):
it's not just you hear people say, oh he's starting
on the left, starting on the right, He's just changing hands.
I was starting to Austin Corbett yesterday about it, and
he said, imagine if somebody told you, okay, you right
with your right hand now right with your left hand. Yeah,
now right with your right foot. Now go right with
your left foot. And I was like, Austin, I don't
think I can write with my feet, and he said,
(11:49):
of course you can't, but Brady can. So he is.
I don't know that Brady can actually write with his feet.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
I want to test that.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
He's just very good at playing a lot of positions,
so it's good to have him. Other changes with that
lineup are with those roster moves. David Moore going on
IR means the doors open for Jimmy Horn. Jimmy Horn,
do I did the horn sound?
Speaker 2 (12:12):
I teach you up for that.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Jalen Cocher' is no week so probably away from being activated,
but Jimmy Horn gets his shot this week. A lot
of people been looking forward to Jimmy and you were
talking to him yesterday about how excited he is. He's really,
you know, just bouncing all around about this. Isn't he no?
Speaker 2 (12:30):
None at all?
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Right?
Speaker 2 (12:32):
He is very very chill, to the point that that,
you know, friend of the program fashed I heard. She
was like, I know, you've got to be more excited
than what you're trying to show us. She's like why
are you holding this in? And he's like, this is
just me, this is who I am. That's Jimmy, and
you know he's he's fine. And it was funny that
(12:54):
while he was talking to us in the locker room
saying that Bryce Shung was at the podium basically saying
the same thing at the lectron go basically saying the
same thing that you know, Jimmy comes in every day
and it's like, goes one hundred and ten percent at
whatever they're asking him to do, and that hasn't changed,
(13:14):
whether he's on the scout team, whether he's working with
special teams, and whether he's you know, running with the
ones a couple of times, which he has been, and
he's like he's done that every day. And then Dave
Canalis in particular mentioned something yesterday that was interesting, like
they knew when Jimmy got here, you know, there were
so many natural and intangible like positives to his game
(13:37):
and who he is as a player, but there was
also some things that still needed to be polished, some
things that you can get away with at college that
you can't necessarily get away with at the NFL level,
and that there was some development there as as is
typical for a six rond guy. And you know that's
one of the reasons he maybe wasn't activated the first
four weeks, that there was still some time, there was
(13:57):
some things to work on, and obviously things were fast
tracked with the David Moore injury. But he said, you know,
you actually started to see He said, I started to
see it a couple of weeks ago with Jimmy, about
two weeks ago, that he was getting to where we
needed him to be. If a situation like this arose, Yeah,
and you know they're excited, they're happy. It doesn't matter.
(14:20):
If I think Jimmy is very excited, he just doesn't
show it. He's not very effusive with it. But his
teammates certainly are for him, and so I think it
could provide an interesting little element.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Yeah, he's a different kind of guy. I mean, the
Panthers had collected all these big, fast guys. I mean,
whether it's Tetero, McMillan, Xavier Lega, who's going to be
back this week. You mentioned Jalen Kocher. He's probably another
week or so away. But that's another big body in
that room, along with Bryce and Tremaine and they've collected
those guys on purpose. I mean, they like what you
(14:53):
can do with that size at creating matchups on the defense.
But Jimmy's a different He's a different athlete. I mean
he's small, he's fast. I would imagine you're going to
see him used in a lot of different ways. Dave
Canalys's referenced a couple of times Devin Tompkins, who was
here for a couple of coffe at the end of
last year, but played more for him in Tampa a
(15:14):
couple of years ago. Tompkins was a short guy they
used on a lot of different kind of ways, getting
the ball to him in space, letting him run around,
make stuff happen. And I think that's part of what
they're looking at with Jimmy. I mean they've put such
an emphasis this week on making more plays downfield, I
mean more shot plays, being a little more aggressive, and
I think having a Jimmy to come in to this
(15:36):
situation and add that to it, you know, it throws
another wrinkle in there, gives him another possibility as they're
trying to diversify.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
To someone that the defense will have to account for.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
No doubt, no doubt. Speaking of people the defense generally
has to account for keevian eye on Chewba Hubbard. The
injury report will be updated later this afternoon. Check that
out on Panthers dot com. There's a free plug and
check it out too, because his status for this game
is going to be uh something a lot of people
are watching. Cuba did not practice Wednesday with a little
(16:08):
bit of a calf issue. Same thing had him on
the report last week. We'll see how Cuba is. But
again we talk about depth and being prepared for these things.
They went out and bought him a Rico Dowdle for
a reason. You know, you you wanted another thousand yard
back in the backfield backing up your thousand yard back.
Here's Rico Dawdles. So even if they get in a
situation where Tuba is not able to go uh, they
(16:31):
kind of like that depth they've got with Rico.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
And I'm curious too if like, because you know, we've
seen Cuba and Rico trading off a lot of series.
You know, if it was a Tuba led series, then
Rico would come in for third down and vice versa.
If it was a Rico led series, Tuba comes in
for third down and then they would trade off, you know,
every two to three series kind of who was going first.
It was a it was a nice little rotation there.
(16:55):
Do they do that with Rico and Trevory t In?
I guess not, but I guess we'll find out on Sunday.
And then, you know, Rico's so much more of an
outside the tackles guy. Does the run game approach change
if Rico is your lead guy versus Cuba? All questions
that we'll find out the answers to on Sunday, But
(17:17):
I'm very curious to see.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Yeah, no doubt. And again, when you watch the way
they moved the ball that first drive last week, it's like, Okay,
here it is, Here it is. That's what they're going for,
That's what they're trying to create. Obviously they're going to
have to adjust if Tuba's not out there. That's a
significant adjustment to their offensive plan. But again, just the
fact that we're not talking about signing somebody off the
(17:41):
street to play a bunch of running back snaps. This
is a thousand yard back who's already been here in
your system. You've still got a couple of first round
picks and Team Mac and XL at wide receiver, all
along with Jimmy Horn's debut, and along with Bryce and Tremaine,
who's done some good things when he's had the opportunities.
So I think it's going to be interesting to see.
They also got a lot more out of tight ends
(18:02):
last week than I think a lot of people imagined
in a situation with no J. T. Sanders. There was
a lot of Tommy Trimble, a lot of Mitch Evans,
a lot of James Mitchell. Even so, I think they've
got enough pieces in place. They've just got to get
that offense put together on a more consistent basis.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Yeah, that's what. If we heard one word this week
over and over, it was consistency. Can we be consistent
from one drive to the next, from one play to
the next, one drive to the next, and then one
game to the next. That's been what has admittedly been lacking.
And then you know, once you're consistent, then you can
really starting to get into your flow. When you're not consistent,
(18:40):
and when you get out of what's the word like,
when you get out of order a little bit, it's uncomfortable.
It's it's hard to play call through that, it's hard
to get.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
A you have to cobobulate yourself.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Oh there you go combobulate because you have been discombinulated.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
You were previously discombobulated, but now you are combobulated.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
It just throws everything off. When there are drops, or
when you get behind the sticks and you're not in
a favorable down a distance, it just throws everything off.
So can you keep that consistency going from one drive
to the next. I think we saw that in the
Atlanta game. We saw it in the second half of
(19:23):
the Cardinals game. Now it's just about doing it week
to week.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
Yep, no doubt. But here's the best news. You get
to do it here in Bank of America Stadium, surrounded
