Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy half Hour. Hello friends, welcome back. It is the
Happy half Hour. The Carolina Panthers were in pads and
we were in sweat. That's why I'm wearing a non
licensed T shirt right now, because I had to change
after practice today. It was hot out there.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
It wasn't quite as munkey as yesterday. I don't think
yesterday was pretty bad, but when you're out there for
two hours, it starts to add up on you. And
I think by the time all said, all of a
sudden done, we were probably out there like three little
over three hours. So it adds up. It adds up
for the guys too.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
You know.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
It makes tensions flair. But that's what makes an interesting
practice as well.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
There's a lot of cops and firefighters out there who
have no sympathy for us whatsoever, nor nor should they.
Their jobs are important. We watch ballplayers for a living,
but we appreciate everybody that's out there. Here's the thing,
it's hot outside. Do a lot of this and a
lot of this, sunscreen, water, hydrate, take care of yourself.
It's a mess out there, gang, so be careful.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Ever heard the graduation speech always wear something skood.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
He's heard the graduations.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Oka.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
That was like thirty years ago in internet time, wasn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
I think it was nineteen ninety seven Chicago Tribune. It
was a column.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah, that's She's referenced the nineties and newspapers things that
we no longer have context for. So anyway, today was
a thing. Today was a vibe in practice, wasn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yeah, it was, especially towards the end. I mean, some
of it was the heat, some of it this time
of year, some of it's ready to just hit somebody else,
but it, you know, Dave Canal has kind of made
the point. He's like, there's times, you know, you kind
of have to pull them back and remind him. You know,
things like you know, Cube of Howard punting a ball
after scoring a touchdown. J T Sanders spinning a ball
(01:46):
in front of the defense after scoring a touchdown. Tho's
the kind of things that will probably get you a
flag in a game. So Canals was like, you know,
I have to pull them back, and he's like, but
I secretly love it as well.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
They does. Dave might not be a great poker pulla
or ever. I'm not sure because you could tell from
the moment he started talking about that sequence. You know,
you as a coach, you have to say, you're obliged
to say, now, don't get penal these boys. We have
to be smart in addition to tough. But he's like
when JT. Sanders scores one on j C. Horn and
(02:19):
gets up and spins the ball on him, He's like,
oh yeah, but and again, this all started with this
guy right here. J C is like a narrator for
the entire defense. He will not shut up during practice
and he has been on one all camp. We talked
(02:39):
a lot about kind of the friendly banner between him
and Bryce all through OTAs and that was fun. And
you know, when it's June and May and you're running
around in shorts, that's one thing. But when they're out
there in pads, I think we have to remind people
from time to time because we forget j C. Horn
is also large, in addition to being fast and really
(03:00):
good at covering people and stuff like that. So JC
ain't one of these cornerbacks. It's scared of putting pads
on it and hitting somebody. And he was on one today.
He picked off Bryce early on. And JC likes to
remind people when he gets an interception. Believe it or not,
he is many things. He is good at a lot
of stuff, but gracious may not necessarily be one of
the qualities to him. Correct off the field, he's a
(03:25):
perfect gentleman. We love j C. Horn, But yeah, he
started in on them as soon as he picked off
Bryce and was drawn back and forth and punted it
over in their direction. So you have to pretend to
be mad at that if you're Dave Canallis. But that
goes on and then again the playing question about with
JT Sanders. Not only did j T get him, but
(03:45):
JT spun it on him. Yeah, And while j C
was basically arguing that Barris Sanders was pushing off and
that flag never came, so Mike Jack picks up the
ball and chunks it back at the offense. It was great,
I mean, it was. The passion cannot be disputed by
these guys. We're uh, you know, we're watching it unfold
(04:06):
in real time. But the real instigator, you know, JC
gets a lot of attention for it. The real instigator
is this guy right here, mister Cuba Hubbard or Canadian
running back. I thought Canadians were supposed to be nice.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, they're they're nice, but they stand on business.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
And Cuba definitely does. This man's already been in one
fight this camp and he's got an eggnog, as he
calls it, right about there to prove it. But Cuba
is not one to let he's not one to suffer fools. Gladly,
let's say it like that, right. He was definitely there
to remind his compatriots on defense. He saluted them after
(04:46):
he scored a touchdown and punted the ball back in
their direction, and he saluted them in a way to
indicate that they were number one to him and very
close to his art and and someone that he was
very fond of.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
So but that's a way to put it.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
That is a way to put it. We'll just gonna
leave it. This is a family podcast as far as
you know, and we're just gonna leave it right there now.
One of the things I think it's easy to get
carried away and a couple of days ago when you've
been Trevin Wallaser in the camp fight. Camp fights are
the most overrated things ever. And Jordan was great talking
about this stuff on Jordan and Jake the other day.
(05:23):
And if you're not listening to Jordan and Jake, What's
Wrong with You? The Jordan and Jake podcast is an
anchor of our podcast network. I love those guys, but
camp fights are always the most overrated things in the world.
And so Trevin and Cubo hugged it out that it's
all nothing but love. They're doing their thing today was
(05:45):
like actual instigation happening. This was Cuba actually getting under
the skin of JC and all those cats on defense.
And the thing I like about it, I think the
thing that's a valuable thing for the Carolina Panthers is
these are not just a couple of instigators. Yeah, these
are actually two of your core players, two guys you
(06:06):
extended on purpose in the last year because you want
them to lead. So when the guys yeappen are the
guys making plays, and they're the guys you've paid, you're
creating that thing football coaches like to call culture, and
you see it in a lot of ways. These two guys,
Dereck Brown, Rob Hunt, the way he plays, I mean,
(06:28):
the guys they are investing in are the guys who
set the tone every day in practice. And that's, as
Bryce Young would say, super.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Valuable, right, And all of this kind of came about too.
It had been building up, like you said, after jac
picked off Bryce since you a punted the ball and whatnot.
And then there was a stretch towards the end where
I believe it was Kobe Hudson caught a touchdown from
Andy down the theme and Gero Everro came over and
kind of laid into the defense. It was I saw
(06:56):
him afterwards and kind of laughed. I was like, we
heard you today, and he's like, yeah, but the y'all
would he made attention was obtained. He he laid into
him pretty hard. And because there was another play as well,
there had been another offensive play where oh that was
the JT play, there was the Hudson play, the JT play.
(07:17):
Evroe lets them hear it, and then they go out
and uh Shaw Smith Wade breaks one up and somebody
broke one up on Jalen Cocher read read broke one
up on Jayalen Cocher in the back of the end zone.
So defense immediately responded. It was a lot of back
and forth today. And as all of that was happening,
(07:38):
with the punting and the spinning and whatnot, Dave can
Ali said afterwards, He's like, you know, it kind of
is across the board. But when we start to see
their personality, I know they're comfortable. You know, they know
the schemes, they know the playbook, they know what we're doing,
and they're not they're not thinking about it too much.
It's kind of what he was saying, because they're they're
(07:59):
comfortable enough to just play in it. And then that's
when you can kind of see who they are outside
of just you know x's and o's. And he's like,
you know, we tell the guys all the time they
have a green light to show us who they are.
And that's something he's harped on as well. You know,
he always talks about let's let's find us and he says, too,
(08:20):
you know, we're gonna be physical, we're gonna run the ball.
But a large part of who this identity is gonna
be is gonna be determined by the players. Every team's
a little different. Who do you want to be? And
I think we're starting to figure out who this team
will be. They'll be a little they'll be they'll they'll
have a little umphs to them, you know, and they'll
be happy to tell you what they think on the
(08:42):
field and a little bit of a scrappiness to them.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Yeah, and listen, none of this matters without results. And
that's another one of the things. There was so much
conversation about Bryce and his improvement. This, that, and the other.
Bryce being confident through the off season was born out
of Bryce putting some points on the board during the
regular season last year. And so this is a team
that is starting to figure out a personality. And again,
(09:08):
no matter what, the Carolina Panthers are built to run
the ball. I know they've spent their last two first
round picks on receivers and you can take care of
Bryce that way, and that's all well and good, But
this is a team built around a fourth round Canadian
running back named Chuba Hubbard who works in a way
that you want guys to work. We talked about it
with Excel the other day. He's picked up a new
(09:30):
jugs machine habit, and Xavier Leget admits that, you know,
there were times that got away from him in the past.
He wasn't always sure, but after the Philadelphia game last year,
he went found Chewba Hubbard, and that's the guy you
want to model yourself after in the way that you work.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
And go back real quick to something you were just
saying about Bryce and jump in here talking about him
finding that confidence. We saw it with JC, dear and OTAs.
But then today there was a play where there was
nothing really there. So Bryce took off and I thought
he had it. I thought he was gonna run for
a touchdown. He was about a yard shore and Nick
Scott comes up and just boom, I mean, took care
(10:10):
of him. He didn't take him to the ground or anything,
but he let Bryce feel it and made sure he
knew he wasn't getting to the end zone. And we
have we have said this before, Nick Scott. If JC
wasn't the bigger talk the biggest talker on this team
right now, it would be Nick Scott. And he's happy
to to kind of be mouthy out there. And he
(10:33):
bowed up on Bryce. He kept him from getting in
for the touchdown and immediately let him know it. And Bryce,
instead of you know, Mike in the past, would have
turned around and just kind of walked away from it, instead,
he bowed up on Nick as well. And tea Mac
talking about your first run receivers, taking care of your quarterback,
he did in that instance tea. Max stepped between him,
told Bryce to get back to the huddle. Yeah, kind
(10:54):
of settled that before it become anything. But it was
good to see both of them sort of be willing
to like have that physical moment take care of each other,
as Canal says to still do in these practices, but
also you know, see Bryce being willing to kind of
take on that contact and not back down from it either.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah. Hey, speaking of contact, you want to see some real,
live football. And again, let me just say this right
out of the top, the reason we decided to do
Happy half Hour every day during training camp is we
miss you guys. We want to see We want to
see fans on the field as much as anybody. We've
got an active construction site here. I wish there was
room and players do too. But Saturday night, there's room
(11:34):
for a whole bunch of you. Come joining us at
Bank of America Stadium at six point thirty. Take Its
available online. You can find that at Panthers dot com.
But here's what's gonna happen at FanFest. It's not just
lasers and light shows and all the fun stuff. After
we got some actual football coming our way Saturday night, gang.
(11:55):
Dave Canalis said they'd be in full pads. He wants
guys to get tackled, you know, like we don't want
anybody dragging down any bady's legs or anything like that.
They want to take care of themselves. But Saturday Night's
gonna have actual football looking stuff. In years when FanFest
is you know, glorified seven on seven kind of like
an Ota, but not Saturday Night. Saturday Night, these guys
are gonna be getting after it.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Yeah, he said, everything will be live, so that'll be
fun to see and kind of fans can kind of
see up close what we've been saying and talking about
for the past few weeks now about what this team
looks like, not only on paper, but what they look
like together, and like they're the vibe they're putting off,
the personality that they're kind of developing. So yes, come
see it up close. It'll be a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
There's a lot of that going on. Speaking of things,
to keep an eye on Panthers dot com throughout today.
We got a lot of good stuff coming your way today.
We've already posted the observations here at Show Behind the Show.
My lunch is still sitting on my desk because I
haven't eaten it yet, and.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
I was actually able to scarf mine down in about
five minutes.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
There you go. Five is good. But we got observations up,
photos from us, all that kind of cool stuff right
after practice. A lot of stuff coming your way today.
There is some news injury update wise. A couple guys
out of practice today. Hunter Renfro's got a little hamstring.
Hunter Renfro, as we've talked about practically every day this
training camp has been one of the real hidden stars,
(13:16):
not even hidden.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
He's been one of these out there.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Got a little hamstring, Canal said. He asked him if
we had a game this week, would you play, and
Hunter's like, oh, yeah, I'm gonna play. But it's July,
so you give the guy a couple of days. Let
him get right. Mike Jack's got a little bit of
a tow deal, so he was out there wandering around
in his tennis shoes and still instigating. Still out there
chunkin balls back at the offense after they after they
(13:42):
get spun on him. Mike's one of those interesting cats.
He's out there with a script in his hand, coaching
when he's not practicing and he's uh, he's an interesting
cat in that way. What was the other on Mike
Jack Hunter and uh Pat Jones Pat Johnson. Pat Jones
basically has a cold gang. He's got some kind of
upper respiratory something. Didn't get a good sleep last night, and.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Tomorrow is an off day, so it gives him, you know,
let him sit out today. He was actually out at practice,
but Dave said, you know, they just didn't feel comfortable
putting him out there, having him breathing hard while he's
dealing with this.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Hey, take care of your people. It's July.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
So by having that and then tomorrow, like we said,
being an off day, he should be hopefully good to go.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
Yeah, we talked to and again we're going to have
more about this on Panthers dot com later this afternoon.
Brent tillis Executive VP, the cap guy, don't call him that,
he's uh, Brand's important part of this thing. He talked
about some of the contractual things that's coming up in
the future for the Panthers, But the one really neat
thing and you're writing about this afternoon was Taylor Moton. Yeah,
(14:42):
Taylor Moten and I don't mind. I don't think he
would mind me saying this. Taylor Moton is an exceedingly
sweaty man. The people in the training room know that
after practice, Taylor Moton's gonna come and hug them, and
they love it, but they don't love it because Taylor's
sweaty guy. Taylor had a with him today, but he
wasn't just using it to wipe sweat out of his eyes.
(15:03):
Taylor Moulten got emotional when he was talking about how
much it means to him, how much this place means
to him, knowing he's going into a contract, your final
year of his extension that he got after the twenty season.
And he also not a great poker player, because you
could tell he got choked up a little bit there
(15:23):
when he started talking about that.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Yeah, he said, you know, I love the Panthers, I
love this city, and you know, had my kids here
and talked about how much sacrifice has happened on that field.
You know, we think about it too. Last year, Taylor
Mouton was was kind of putting himself through extremiating circumstances
week after week and balancing his practice schedule just to
(15:46):
make sure he was out on the field on Sundays,
and he did, and he'd go out there on Sundays
and play an excellent game. And so it's when you
pour that much of yourself into a place and into
a team, you can't help but feel tied to it,
you know, infinitely, And no matter what happens after this year,
(16:06):
this is always gonna be a special place for Taylor Moton.
And that's what he kind of said to use. You know,
there's still a lot to figure out there with his contract.
He and Brent Tillis sort of said the same thing,
but he said, if this is my final year here,
I just I want to make sure it's it's the
most special one yet. On that note, Brent Tillis, I thought,
(16:27):
had a really really interesting answer. He was asked an
excellent question about you know, you're the money guy. Does
that make it easy to distach to detach when you're
having these conversations, And he's like, honestly, no, Like it's
it's not easy because these and he's mentioned watching because
he went right after Taylor at the mic, and he
(16:48):
mentioned watching Taylor Moton's press conference and seeing how emotional
he got, and he's like, you know, it's it's hard
having those conversations sometimes and figure it and figuring out
the numbers and the logistics when you're dealing with an
actual person.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Yeah, and that's the thing. This is a human being business,
and the Carolina Panthers have accumulated more good human beings
over the course of the last couple off seasons. And
Timo is one of those guys. I love talking to
him writing about him because he's so in the moment
at all times, and he's also kind of become the
(17:20):
conscience of this place, that training camp. You know, he's
the guy who tells people to pick up their dirty
towels out the locker room. He wants to keep a
clean environment. He you know, he looks after the other guys.
I mean, you go out and spend one hundred million
dollars on Rob Hunt to plant next to him, and
it's easy to overlook, but Taylor was kind of the
conscience of this place for a long time and has
(17:41):
sort of shepherded this team through some transitions. And he
was around here when things were better. You know. He
referenced playing with Cam Newton today and getting nicknames from camp,
and it's important to have people like that in your
building who know the culture, know the old stories. Know
what keep pounding means besides a couple of words you
(18:02):
pass on the wall on the way out to practice
every day. And it's super important to have guys like
that around. And that's why Brand admitted, Hey, it's tough
to have negotiations with people like that, and you know,
I think to their credit, they've done that with people
like Derek and JC lately, you know who happened to
be in their early twenties and ascending players and you know,
(18:23):
going to Pro Bowls and stuff like that. So it's
a little different equation than a Taylor who's closer to
the end of his career than the beginning but still
playing a really high level. I mean, Timo plays an
important role for those guys. And I remember Rob earlier
this offseason. I've lost all concept of time, so I
don't know if it was last week or June, but
Rob said playing next to Timo, I knew about him,
(18:47):
but after I was around him for a year, you
kind of recognize. Man, if he was playing on a
team that was winning more games or in a different market,
he would be going to Pro Bowls. So I have
all the respect in the world for a Taylor motin
and you know he's going to continue. I mean he
really They talked about him, Canal has talked about him
the other day. He said he gets after it an
(19:08):
individual drills in a way that exhausts people. I mean
just the work he puts into it. You know, he knows.
I mean there are times he's not gonna be able
to practice every day, and I'm sure he'll get breaks
during training camp and stuff like that, but he is
unquestionably one of the leaders around this place and one
of the good human beings, aside from being excessively sweaty.
(19:30):
So what else we got coming today? What if I missed.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Play of the day?
Speaker 1 (19:35):
Play the day? Yeah, that McMillan kid, he can catch football.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Game, go up and get it, can he?
Speaker 1 (19:41):
He has got that ability to stick one hand up
in the air and come down with a football in it,
even sometimes even when one's not thrown at him. But
football is just appear to be caught by a tero McMillan.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
It was first of all credit where it's to. It
was a heck of a throw by Bryce he Art.
It was a perfect little rainbow ball. And then t
mac had Corey Thornton, who's had a good camp, had
him on all over his back, and it's so funny
you see these moments here and there, and Canal's pointed out,
you know, this is a corner room that's got a
(20:15):
lot of big guys. You know, most of them over
six foot over two hundred pounds. That's pretty big for
a corner. But every now and then you see it
clicked to t mac. Oh, yeah, I'm huge, Like I'm
bigger than he is, or I'm taller than he is,
and I think he you know, in learning how to
(20:36):
adapt to the NFL speed and the playbook and things
like that, sometimes things get slowed down. And Canal's even
pointed out, you know, he's had some bad balls, he's
had some bad days, but he always bounces back, and
he usually bounces back when he remembers he's bigger, stronger,
faster than the guy he's going against. A lot of times.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
There is that this cat's got a wingspan like a
tear of dactyl. I mean, he's out there a long
way and he's got them big soft hands on either
side of them so he can go get it, and
he went and got it. Today, we'll have all that
stuff for you later. Oh, by the way, speaking of things,
will have I committed a journalism this morning. We were
(21:15):
talking about Andy Dalton and hidden talent yesterday.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
Oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
I ran into Andy this morning and asked Andy, we
were talking about him. I said, you know, we were
discussing your drop kicking ability, and I said, I bet
Andy Dalton's the kind of guy if you just handed
him three oranges he could juggle. And so yes, I
asked Andy Dalton, can you in fact juggle? And he
looks at me and he was like, yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
Like of course anybody could juggle.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
And listen, I can juggle three items for a brief
amount of time. I mean, it's just you learn the pattern,
you learn the order of things are supposed to go in,
and then it's just muscle memory after that. So it's
not the hardest thing. Of all the tricks I've learned
in my life, juggling is not the most complicated, but
it's one I like to entertain with from time to time,
especially with like fruits and food and stuff when the
(22:03):
kids are small. But yes, Andy Dalton can in fact juggle.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
I found out something about the drop kick thing yesterday too.
Ye ran into Andy and Bryce when I went down
to get my afternoon coffee and Bryce does not drink coffee.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
I learned he does.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
He was there to support Andy as he got his
They were just hanging out and we were talking about
the drop kicks. And asked, Bryce, did you see his
drop kicks? And he's like, yeah, you didn't see me.
I was his ball boy and he was who was
running back there getting the balls for him, And I
was like, to be honest, Bryce, I didn't notice you
doing that.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
That's right, that's culture right there, when you're number one
overall pit quarterback. We'll also shag drop kicks back up
during a break in practice. So all good things, all
good things. So busy Wednesday. We're going to take tomorrow off.
We got League Cup soccer here' stadium tomorrow and no
practice anyway, so we're going to take a day off
from the Happy Half Hour. We will see you back
(22:56):
here on Friday and we'll talk more about that upcoming.
Fan fast Get you tickets now, go to Ticketmaster get those.
It's gonna be a good time. We will see y'all
later on this week here on the Happy half Hour.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
M
