Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy half hoar.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Hello friends, and welcome back to our palatial studio here
in Bank of America Stadium. There are no dirty whirlpool shorts.
This is our home. We are back home from Texas
and we.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Are happy to be there. We've got a little souvenir.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
This diet coke, as far as you know, is in
a can hugger from one of my favorite dive bars
in the world, Sonny's Tavern. I did not get there
this trip, but many fond memories from Sonny's in the past.
So that's my memento from Houston. And I think that's
about as much as we need to.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Say about Houston. Now.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yeah, wait, we.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Can talk about it. Not the best trip.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
The game wasn't a whole lot to look at, but
that's a preseason game for you. When the starters don't
play all that much. They offense went three and out
a couple series in a row, and Dave Canal said,
let's get him on out of here. You know, he
said after the game he clearly wasn't thrilled with the
way that thing went, and he said, I wanted them
to earn those snaps and they did not.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Right.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Granted, they're going up against a really, really good defensive front,
and you know there comes a balance in that decision.
How long do you want to leave them out there
in a preseason game when Will Anderson is blitzen and
stuff like that, And so I get it, But not
a great showing there was. It wasn't clunky. I'll give
it that. Sometimes these preseason games are sufficient.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
It got over in a reasonable amount of time.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Sometimes in these preseason games you watch them and you go,
what are they doing? You saw the vision for like
with the play calling and things like that. It was
more so just place that didn't connect, especially on that
first drive. You know, you throw that ball a little
bit lower, Temac probably brings it in. JT. Sanders comes
downs with those balls nine times out of ten. So
(01:45):
you saw the vision that the play itself wasn't clunky.
It was just not not really not successful. Not successful.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
And listening, I know a lot of people are freaking out.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
I was driving in and listening to our friends on
the earlier this morning, and everybody.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Was the sky is falling. Here's the thing.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
The Carolina Panthers starting offense has played eighteen snaps in
the preseason. I am not going to freak out and
declare anything one way or another based on eighteen snaps, right,
So you know, we'll see and they're gonna practice this week.
They'll practice coming out of the third preseason game. As
they start making cuts and all that kind of stuff.
There's work to be done, and they've obviously got to
(02:27):
polish some stuff up. But I don't think preseason snaps
should be indicative of necessarily anything.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Especially when we saw this offense at times last year.
You even saw it in games in the second half
of that season. It was usually around the second quarter,
especially the third quarter, when you could tell, Okay, Bryce
has figured out exactly what they're doing on defense. Today,
you can't really do that in six snaps. So again,
not a great showing. Definitely some thing's to work on,
but I'm not coming away necessarily concerned. Maybe a little
(02:57):
more on defense. The run defense looked noticeably different for
the three snaps Derek Brown was in there, but it
was only three snaps, and so you know, what does
that look like when he's out there for a full game.
That's gonna be exciting to see. We're not gonna see
it against the Steelers because Steelers aren't our starters aren't playing.
But again, some questions answered, a lot more questions have
(03:20):
risen nothing in my opinion that you're pressing the panic button.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
One of the things I like about Derek Brown the
human being, Well, there are many things I like about
Derek Brown the human being. He's delightful.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
But the two things off the top of my head
from that trip was number one, Derek was a little
salty about only playing three snaps. Derek wants to play
a lot of snaps always. He was like a ninety
percent of the snaps guy the other year when he
set the league record for tackles in a season by
a d lineman. So he's used to playing hundreds and
hundreds of snaps and so going out there for three
(03:52):
Derek was itching to play more. Yeah, my favorite Derek
Brown thing from that game on Saturday was his hat.
And if you have not enjoyed the picture of Derek
Brown and his hat that we've captured on Panthers dot com,
we get the video on the social media's Derek Brown's
hat is enormous.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
It is a cowboy hat.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
He was walking in next to Hunter Renfro and I said,
I want to see Hunter Renfro put this hat on
because I think it would just go straight down to
his shoulders. I think it would just beloup his head.
I want to I want to get Derek's hat and
see how many items, how many golf balls will fit,
how many eggs would fit in Derek, And.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
He has a perfectly round head.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
It's so Yeah, Derek is a gentleman of stature's.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
He There are some guys who are all hat and
no cattle.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Derek has both cattle and hat and a farm and
he can back it up. But yeah, we like Derek
and look forward to seeing more of him doing his thing.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
And one other really quick thing just about dB. He
almost didn't play that game at all, Like the coach's
plan was to not play him, let him get a
little bit more rest, and he Canal said he begged,
he begged Canalis to let him go out there and play,
even just those three snaps. He just wanted to get
back out there and get a feel for it before
week one.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Right, all right, The news coming out of Houston obviously
a couple big headlines, number one being Nick Gorton, and
the good news is Nick is well. At this moment,
Nick suffered a collapsed lung during the joint practice on Thursday. Initially,
they thought he was just suffering from heat related symptoms.
He was struggling to catch his breath. They get Nick
back to the hotel and he meets with the medical
(05:29):
staff and they realize this is obviously.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
More than just heat related.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
So after he meets with the medical staff and the
Panthers travel with a full cadre of doctors, Nancy Gritter
and company take good care of these guys. They got
with him, realized something was wrong, get Nick to the hospital.
He actually spent Thursday night in a Houston hospital Herman
Memorial in case you're wondering, well, he spent the night observation.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Nick's doing okay.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Then they loaded him up and drove him home. Because
when you've got a collapse lung, getting in a pressure
ize cabin and getting up to thirty thousand feet it's
not necessarily anything you want to do.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
So Nick got a long ride home.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
He was traveling with some family members and a member
of the Panthers athletic training staff was long in the
car with him, and they made that long drive.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
That was a cannonball run.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Esque trip of about sixteen seventeen hours. Good ride home,
but they left Friday night, drove through the night. He
was back here Saturday in time to see kickoff back
here and early this morning I see Nick walking around. Yeah,
I don't anticipate we're going to see him doing a
lot of football stuff for a little bit here while
(06:35):
he gets himself right. But that's not the concern at
this point. The concern is that Nick scoredon, is healthy.
He's a young man in good shape. Hopefully he'll be
ounced back well.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Yeah, and it kind of the severity of that can
range depending on the situation. Can now said it came
off a hit, so you know they'll monitor that closely,
make sure that he's in tip top shape before going
back out there. Small silver lining. He's from Bryant, Texas,
which is an hour from Houston, so his family was
close by. They were able to scoop them up in
the car and he had as his parents go back
(07:06):
with him.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Sports system support system in place is a good thing
during what had to be a scary time. Yeah for Nick,
But the good news is, you know, hopefully Nick's going
to get himself well. We'll let the football part of
that take care of itself as time passes. The other
big medical update that everybody's concerned about is Andy Dalton.
Of course, Andy left the game the other day after
(07:28):
one series with a elbow issue.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
They called it a spraying.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Here's the thing I said during the game I put
on the social media's I said, I don't know, I
haven't talked to any doctors yet, but Andy Dalton is
down there on the sideline being Andy Dalton. Yeah, and
that's probably a pretty good sign. And Andy saw me
later and he said, I saw that tweet. I appreciate that.
It's a consistency of character that we respect about Andy.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
He was just down there doing his thing.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
He was working with Bryce, working with Jack, going through
the video of everything during the game. I don't think
this is much of a big deal. Andy's throwing a
little bit. He's not doing a you know, a whole
lot these days during practice. Hey, he probably wasn't going
to play a lot if any anyway, on Thursday night
in the preseason finale against Steelers.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
So I think this one's just a give him a
little time, get it rested up. He'll be fine.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Andy was very unconcerned as he was talking about, you know,
He wasn't offering medical updates or anything like that, but
he was.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Like he was being and he's been ay.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
And I believe the hit came on the final play
of the drive he played, because you know, it's easy
to look at that play and go, how did he
miss Temac who had pulled off of Derek Stingley right
and got in space. Could have been, you know, a touchdown.
How did he miss a wide open team Ac? That's
when he got hit. So the ball came out after.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
His arm got hit.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
The reason that ball flew the way it flew is
because a full speed Daniel Hunter his throwing completely.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Changed the trajectory of the throw.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Aeronautical properties of a football change when Danil Hunter is
slamming into UFI speed.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
So it Andy's gonna be all right?
Speaker 2 (09:06):
It is the short takeaway, But with Andy Dalton a
little dinged up, and you need another quarterback for Thursday's game, Caroline,
Panthers have a new quarterback, friends, and he's wearing number ten.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
And his name and his name is Bryce. How about that.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
That's not gonna get confusing at all.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
He's a slightly taller Bryce.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
This Bryce Bryce Perkins, the MVP of the UFL, of course, MVP.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Of the UFL, a multiple record holder at UVA, guy
that played two years with the Los Angeles Rams, won
a Super Bowl ring with the Rams, and.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
He has many friends here.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
And I can't wait because because of where he was
on the depth chart at the Rams, I can't wait
to talk to guys like Nick Scott Ashan Robinson because
they probably faced him a lot of practice and to
find out what that's like. But a guy that went
that left the Rams, went to the UFL and really
kind of refined his game. So obviously you know this,
We don't know what his time with us will be,
(10:02):
but interested to see what he might have learned in
the UFL, what he might have really worked on the
past year or so, and how it's going to translate
now back to the NFL.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
You know what he's doing this week though, cramming like
he was in college back in the UVA days, because
he's trying to learn a whole new offense in a
couple of days so he can go out there and
function on Thursday night against Steelers.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
Yeah, he is a true, true dual threat quarterback as well,
so maybe we'll see some of that too. See some
of some some running from him. I don't know. I'm
excited to watch him play. I mean, like I said,
this is a guy that set a lot of records
in college, a guy that set a lot of records
in the UFL. This past season two, he won MVP
despite missing three games due to an ankle injury. That's
(10:46):
how well he played in the seven games he appeared.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
In the regular season.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Was he a Michigan Panther.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
He was a Michigan Panther, so he is still a Panther.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
A Panther's legend already. We'll get him in here. Bryce.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
For the record, we'll be wearing noumber ten. Do you
know the last quarterback to wear number ten for your
Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Steve Berline.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
I'm just guessing Steve Berline was seven.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
Come on, Oh, give me a hint.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
What year it was? Twenty ten?
Speaker 3 (11:15):
That would have been pre cam Vinnie Testa Verdi.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
That's the answer to most of my stories.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
I just say that because you brought up Vinnie Testa
Arty four different times while we were in Houston.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
The other thing, I do tell stories a lot. This
is true, and I like telling a good Vinnie Testaverdi story.
Maybe I'll share one on the Happy half Hour sometime. No,
that would be OURMANI Edwards, Appalachian State legend who came here.
It was mostly a wide receiver, but he got to
run around a little bit.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
And play some is an emergency quarterback.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
That's right? So and he was a really good you know,
after State.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
After Bryce was pulled the other day and then Andy
was obviously hurt and Jack Plummer ended up playing the
bulk of the game, I did have to. I sat
there and wondered, like, what happens if Jack gets hurt?
Who's going out there? So I started going through my mind,
like who could be the emergency quarterback? I came down
to Mitchell Evan's guy that played quarterback in high school
A good bit, threw it a couple of times while
(12:07):
he was at Notre Dame as well. He was the
top of my list for emergency quarterback.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
That's probably the answer. You know what, the answer is
not JJ Jansen.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Somebody actually actually plays quarterback in practice. A good bit.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Yeah, JJ can throw it around a little bit for
a forty year old long snapper, but.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
He's uh, he just aged him like three years he.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Is not going to he's forty. In my mind, he's
got Dad energy, so he JJ will not be playing quarterback. No,
that is not the case.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
But I was downstairs the other day and it came
up the fact that he doesn't in practice a lot.
And it was me JJ and Andy Dalton standing there
and Jonathan Cooley, and we were trying to figure out, like,
what Andy, I'm sorry, what JJ would have to say
to Dave Canalis to convince him to let JJ play
quarterback in a game for at least one snap. And
then we were like and he was like, you know,
(13:01):
you could probably run this. You could probably run that.
And Cooley was like, no, I could defend it easily
with this. I could defend like And so we were
trying to figure out what a JJ Jenson quarterback snap
in a game would look like. But hopefully we never
have to find out.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
No offense, JJ, Yeah, I think the other thing we're
not thinking about here is not just who the emergency
quarterback would be in that situation, who's the emergency long
snap right situation. And that's a more precious commodity.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
You put a center out there and tell them to
just really put some juice on it.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Yeah, it's as I always get a kick out of
Austin Corbett when we get to this time of year
and a lot of guys are cycling through different positions,
and every now and then you look up and you see, oh,
there's Jared Kingston playing center in the preseason. And there's
Jared Kingston, and it's like one of Austin's famous lines
is we're all the backup center. Anybody who's not a
(13:52):
starting anything is the backup center.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
Also somewhere down the line, you.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
Know, this does remind me though there last year on
Fridays they would put Felipe Franks at long snapper just
to have an emergency guy. So I wonder who the
emergency long snapper will be this year. Liipe obviously in
Atlanta now, so yeah, who are they going to practice
on Fridays.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
We will get to the bottom of that at some point.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
The one thing I speaking of story time, and this
doesn't have it. This isn't of any Testaverdi story. This
is a Chris Mangham story.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
Okay, many moons ago.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
Chris Mangum was a blocking tight end from Ole miss
who was here during some of the Jake Delome Glory years,
Mangum was a good.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Wow, that is a football picture right there.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Mangi was a football guy to his core, and as
he got toward the end of his celebrated ten year
NFL career, he started getting worried about his roster spot.
And so Chris had the brainstorm one summer to he decided,
I'm going to learn how to long snap. So he
talked to some other long snappers and figured out he
was going to do this, and he got Jason Kyle
(14:54):
to give him a few pointers. Well, Chris actually lived
in a neighborhood near one of my my old friends
who just happen to be nearby, and every afternoon John
Hines would get home from work and Mangum would knock
on his door and be like, come, come out here
in the Call to sack. I need to shag a
few long snaps for me.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
And they were standing in the Call to sack.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
He was shagging long snaps from an NFL tight end.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
So that's funny.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
That's the commitment you have to have because in the NFL,
the number one answer is the more you can do,
the more you can do, and the more you can do.
We've got more coming up for you. Keep it locked
on Panthers dot com all afternoon. We're gonna have updates
rolling in throughout the afternoon. We'll get them to you,
but it's good to be home. Keep it locked on
Panthers dot com. We got some good stuff coming for
(15:41):
you this week. There's a teas on the YouTube channel.
Stay tuned for that later this evening and tomorrow. We
got some good stuff coming your way that you will
be excited to see. In addition to our normal Happy
half Hour, we're gonna keep this daily thing going through
the Pittsburgh game and then we'll see what happens after that.
We're trying to figure out the details of what the
Happy half Hour looks like during the regular season.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
But were the suggestions put them in the comments?
Speaker 2 (16:05):
That's right, just let us know. There's never too much
Happy half hour right at any rate. Don't answer that,
or maybe you should. We will see you here tomorrow
on the Happy half Hour. That much I know.
