Speaker 2 (00:10):
No.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
If you're your host Michael Buffis and.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Paul Moyer, it's Thursday, so you know what it is.
Speaker 4 (00:16):
You're listening to Hawks Live presented by the Dining District
at the Bellevy Collection, every Thursday at seven right here
on Seattle Sports seven to ten, broadcasting live from Bellevue
Square Center Court.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
I got my guy back, I got my guy bag.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
The people have been waiting for you. I walked up
and they're like, where's Paul. Where's Paul? I go relax.
He took a week off, a couple weeks off, but
now he's bag sharper than ever.
Speaker 5 (00:39):
How you doing, man, I'm doing I'm doing better, feeling good,
So no excuses. I feel good about the Seahawks, even though, yeah,
it's kind of weird it just happened three days ago
because it was a Monday night game. But yeah, I
thought it's weird that listen to people and social media,
that we'll lose a game and nobody's out of about it.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
No, there's a reason why right, Obviously, you guys know
the Seahawks lost forty two to twenty nine. But when
you look at the film you break things down. Look
more total yards five hundred and sixteen to three hundred
something out rush these guys. You got the number one
passing offense in the league right now. Gino's playing out
of his mind. Ken Walker had three touchdowns. You just
(01:21):
weren't able to stop Jerikoff eighteen for eighteen. Goodness grace
with Jeragoff and he caught a touchdown. Sometimes you just
get got and I think that's what happened. A couple
stops and you guys all know there are some penalties
out there, okay that if I were affiliated with the
NFL the way that I would like to be, I
sent a letter in real quick to Goodell. But like, listen,
(01:41):
these referees are suspect, but you never leave it up
to the referees. End of the day, Moyer, it was
closer than the score says, and we walked away with
some positives but also some things to work on.
Speaker 6 (01:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:54):
Look, first of all, that's a really good team. I
mean they were better than advertised too. Knew going into
it they were good. You know, real quick. Defensively, I
thought they were physical. I thought, you know, we had
to work really hard, give the way they bull rushed,
the way they really claps the pocket.
Speaker 6 (02:13):
But it also made me go, oh my god, Gino Smith.
Speaker 5 (02:16):
Anybody thinks he's not a top five quarterback in this league,
I go, let's go debate it right now.
Speaker 6 (02:21):
He is a top five quarterback.
Speaker 5 (02:23):
In fact, put Pator Mahomes off to the side and
let's start all the other guys out there. I'm like,
you know, you got the Josh Allens of the world.
You got you know, CJ. Stroud.
Speaker 6 (02:33):
I'm telling you, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
If I would take anybody else over Gina because what
he does inside the pocket, he's a man. I mean,
he makes big boy throws, contested throws, quick decisions, knows
when he feels the heat when to dump the ball.
He was brilliant in that game and kept us in it.
To me, you know, as weird as the game was,
and Goth didn't beat us, I know it was eighteen
(02:56):
for eighteen.
Speaker 6 (02:57):
The seventy yard play.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
That was a really nice DETI play give them credit
for that, but you know, it's about a fourteen yard throw.
You know, the forty yard play was about a two
yard throw. He just broke a bunch of tackles. The
touchdown there's a thirty nine yard I mean, look, those
are athletes making plays.
Speaker 6 (03:12):
He's not the one who beat us.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
It really did come down to and I'm not blaming
the rest, but some critical you know, penalties are kind
of even throughout the game, but man, the penalties that
aren't called or are called, how critical they can be.
And you know, the passing aferance that didn't happen on
DK and the end zone, I mean that's brutal.
Speaker 6 (03:36):
That was huge.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
And then the passing of fans or pickplay that they
called on Tyler Lockett that just was so egregious.
Speaker 6 (03:43):
You can't make that call.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
But the weird one no one's really talking about either
is two turnovers and you know, and I know the
last one was you know, desperation, but look if we're
getting the end zone there, and then obviously the one
that you know that DK fumbled and they turned, you know,
essentially into a touch down, you know, we lose that
turnover battle. Those are really it and Detroit couldn't have
(04:06):
played any better, you know, we could have certainly defensively.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
Thirty eight first downs, franchise record DK back to back
to back hundred yard games first wide receiver for the
Seahawks to do that, Gino sets a career record with
completions and attempts. I mean, this offense is getting better
and better, and I think this defense struggled because they
were missing some pieces. So the same way people were
talking about the Seahawks when they're like, oh they're three
(04:32):
and oh they haven't played anybody, Okay, I understand no Tua,
Jacoby Brissett, Bo Nicks. I also look at the Detroit
Lions and say, yeah, you got us, and we almost
got you, but you didn't get our best shot either
because guys were missing. Bibra Murphy, Leonard Williams, you got
Baker Jay Love go out. No excuses, just reality of
the NFL. Every week teams are going to be without
(04:52):
their guys. It just so happened that the Seahawks had
four or five guys that they really depend on defense
that weren't there and couldn't contribute to this team. But
there are some positives that you can take away from this,
and I think the most positive you can be is
with this offense you talked about Gino, but I want
to talk about just grubbing the way that he's calling
plays like things make sense, they are connected. Gino's getting
(05:14):
out the huddle with ample time to diagnose the defense
motion and do all this good stuff, and he's making
good decisions and guys are making plays. DK has impressed
me the most this year out of all years. He's
had great years, but just the way he's catching the football.
When I was in college, my coach used to say,
when you caught it with your body, you're a BCB
body catching you fill in the rest of it, okay,
(05:36):
And people talked about DK only catching the ball with
his body.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
He's going with hands making big plays.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
I think Greub wanted to come out and say, look,
we're going to run the football. It's been let's pass
the football to open up the run. It's been a little
little reversed there.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
You could do that. I mean, there's lots of ways
to do it. I mean, I say we're gonna run
the ball to open up the pass. It didn't have
to always go that way. At the end of the day,
you're hoping you get the running game established. Here's why
I thought was so impressive. While I think fans are
excited and I apologize. I was on earlier today on
Wyman and Bob and they replayed it at six o'clock,
(06:12):
so locally, you're hearing some of the stuff I just said,
you know, not that long ago. Across the Northwest, you're
hearing it for the first time. And I think the
reason why the fans are so excited is one, it
was just our fight.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
You know.
Speaker 5 (06:25):
At halftime they interviewed McDonald, and McDonald kind of said, look,
here's what we're not doing. Well, here's what we're going
to do. We're okay. He was very calm about it.
And then they came out and executed that in the
second half and they got right back in the game.
I thought that was great. And I just think the fight,
I mean, we just we were in that game when
in the in past seasons, man, we wouldn't have been
(06:46):
in that game. You know, we get behind a couple
of scores early on the road. It's a really good team.
I think that that was one. Two is you're right, man,
going up against Detroit. That is it's the best offensive
line I've seen this year. I haven't seen every team
out there We'll see what the forty nine ers do,
but I've seen some of their games already.
Speaker 6 (07:07):
They struggle at right tackle.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
No weaknesses on Detroit, that is, they had four first
round picks. Even though the center didn't play this game,
they had four first round picks in there. They've got
a great tight end, they got wide receivers, two stud
running backs. A quarterback who won at one time was
considered not very smart because he wasn't sure where the
sun rose and set and which was on hard knocks
one year. But he's a really smart quarterback who knows
(07:32):
how to dish that that football this game. The reason
why I don't think I was upset is we just
didn't have enough defensive lineman in this game. And this
was a game that you needed Murphy and you needed
Leonard Williams for sure. You needed two guys that could
occupy two guys so your linebackers could fill the gaps
(07:52):
and be able to play two gaps the way we
run our scheme man against these guys, they're so good.
We didn't have that. That's not that Read and Hankins
aren't capable. It's just that instead of playing forty percent
of the time that are playing sixty seventy percent.
Speaker 6 (08:07):
It wears you out.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
And then we got back up outside linebackers and linebackers.
This is a really hard game to do that because
and McDonald's talked about this before, the way we run
our defense, you often will have two gaps and it's
a fine line. If you just heard this from me,
but there's a fine line. I'm gonna fit really quick.
If flow comes my way, I'm gonna get into that
(08:30):
B gap or A gap. Well they will. Actually you've
got to play both gaps. And so if you fit
it too quick and the running back cuts back at all,
you've got to be in a position to be able
to flow back over the top. And so it's a
fine line and as a backup if you don't get
a lot of reps on that. And that's what happened
to Bunch. It wasn't that we weren't We didn't necessarily
(08:52):
know where they were going. It's just maybe the hole
got too big because our defensive line couldn't quite hold
that double team. All of a sudden, they came off
onto our linebackers. They weren't able to go to gaps
on either side, and instead of making the tackle in
that gap. We were trying to arm tackle a leg
and we just couldn't get it. So I want another
shot at those guys though, with a healthy team.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
I feel that that's why I appreciate that game for
what it was. You lose forty two to twenty nine,
but you learn so much about your team at the
same time, and it provides Mike McDonald a chance to adjust.
I'm sure he's made adjustments throughout the first three weeks,
but there's nothing like making adjustments after a loss. And
I think that's important for a coach in their careers. Okay,
how do you respond? What's your message? How do you
(09:35):
tweak things? When you don't have the hogs in there?
Right the number ones out there? The game plan should
change a little bit, and I think we saw a
little bit of that in the second half. But that's
what makes me eager for this game, Like, Okay, you're
probably not gonna have all your guys out there.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Who knows if.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Murphy's gonna be out there, Baker, Leonard, Jay.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
Love, You're going to have to adjust.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
And then Week five of the NFL season, everybody is
banged up. So I look at that game. It hurt
because the Hawks have lost that game. But it's all
about learning.
Speaker 7 (10:03):
Man.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
If you ain't learning, you ain't living.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
And I think it's important for McDonald and his staff
to figure out how.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
To put their players in the.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
Best position to have success going forward when you do
not have your guys. A guy that we haven't talked
about yet, and we need to talk about him as
kN Walker, there's I mean, you guys saw the play
of him doing a summersault. He looked like my toddler
getting out the bathtub and trying to run away from
the towel like it was crazy. I've never seen anything
like that. The importance that he has to this team
(10:31):
is crucial. Twelve carries eighty rs, three touchdowns a long
of twenty eight.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
Which is he from ken Walker?
Speaker 5 (10:37):
Well, I think we've known he's spent. He's special. I mean,
he's got top end speed. Last year he ran with
twenty two plus miles per hour. He's a guy that
has great vision, can make the big cut back, the
explosive play. I think what we saw in this game,
I think we knew it, but you got to actually
see it to believe it. One is his acceleration to
(10:59):
get top speed is elite. Might be one of the
best in the league. That touchdown run that he did
the cutback and the dB had a really good angle
on him. But once that dB had a change direction
just a little bit and Walker was already at full speed,
it looked like the guy was almost standing still. And
then obviously, I don't know, I've never seen the play before,
and backwards somersault with a guy on you, and it
(11:24):
just to have the wherewithal that I'm not down. There's
a lot of guys who put their hand down and go,
I know that I didn't get down, laid on a guy,
and I'm gonna keep running. But to know that the
guy's got you in a bear hug, I don't know.
It's like an MMA deal. You know it was a reverse.
I don't know if I had an MMA guy, if
I need Bob Stelton here, what is that when they
got you in a perfect spot, you know you end.
Speaker 6 (11:45):
Up flipping him on the ground instead. So brilliant. He's
going to make the Pro Bowl this year if he
stays healthy.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
All right, you heard it from Moyer. He's going to
make the Pro Bowl.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
Right. We're just gonna start a here on Hawks Live.
When we come back, we'll give you an opponent preview.
That is next Michael Bumbas Paul Moyer Hawk's.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Hawks Live presented by the Dining District of the Bellevue
Collection at Bellevue Square Center Court, live on air on
Seattle Sports.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
This is Hawks Live.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Michael Bumpus, Well, my guy, Paul Moyer, every Thursday right here,
Bellvy Square Center Court. It's right center Court. It's a
good place to be. It's our third year here, our
third year, right.
Speaker 6 (12:25):
It's our third year. We love it here.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
It's been our favorite by far. They treat us really well.
It gets fun. It's the holidays start kicking in, and
you know, it kind of starts with you know, it's
get Halloween time and you have Thanksgiving and then you
get Christmas shoppers coming in.
Speaker 6 (12:39):
This play starts packing up.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
But we got our regulars, man, you know, I mean,
they are faithful.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
We appreciate you, yes.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
Sir, all right, it's time to talk about these New
York football giants. I'll let you know who they are
by the numbers so far, all right, when we talk
about offense, they're ranked twenty first overall, averaging two hundred
and ninety six yards per game. They're thirty when it
comes to the run, eighty five yards per game. Singletary
is banged, we'll see if he's ready to go for them.
In the past game, they're fifteenth overall, two into the
(13:08):
eleven yards per game. When it comes to scoring points,
they are twenty ninth fifteen points per game. Your Seahawks
fifth overall offense, twentieth in the run, first in the
past game, ninth when it comes to scoring points. Defensively,
the New York Football Giants twelfth overall. They are the
fifteenth against the run, they're fourteenth against the pass, and
(13:28):
thirteenth when it comes to give it up points.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
The Hawks are.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Eighth overall, fourteenth against the run, seventh against the pass,
and fourteenth when it comes to giving up points. There's
not a lot to the untrained die when you look
at the New York Giants, Paul. People are gonna look
at their win loss record. They're gonna look at the
stats and say the Hawks should win this game. And honestly,
I feel like they should win this game. But you
(13:51):
and I know better been around the block a couple times.
We know that they have guys over there as well,
who could make some plays. What stands out to you?
Speaker 5 (13:59):
Well, I think you said there for you're not gonna
like this, But it's the NFL. I mean, there's one
winless team in the league right now, it's Jacksonville. There's
only two two undefeated teams. You know, they're anybody can
beat anybody. You know, Tampa Bay looked like they were
unstoppable until a week or two ago, and you know
(14:21):
Dallas was that way, and then everybody the forty nine ers.
Anybody can beat anybody. This will be a tough game
for a couple of reasons. One is we're really beat up, right,
I mean so defensively, if they want to make this slugfest,
if they want to try and run the ball, they
want to bring in some big boys, you know, it's
just gonna make this kind of sloggish game that you know,
(14:44):
do they limit the amount of possessions? Does it put
pressure on our offense? Defensively, nothing looks great. They've got
some guys that can can rush a quarterback. In fact,
they got fifteen sacks just to let you know. I mean,
we're a team that's been pretty good in sacks. There's
a lot of pressure we got fourteen defensively. But at
the same time, it's not that they do anything great,
(15:06):
but they don't do anything bad either. You know, their
their sound. Their linebackers are okay, they're in the right place.
We were talking about their secondary. They got some guys
are pretty good.
Speaker 6 (15:16):
Same thing. They hustle. It's a game we should win.
Speaker 5 (15:20):
But you know, it would be nice if we just
we got off to a nice start, really forced them
to have to throw the ball. There's a chance that
their best receiver, Neighbors is out. He's in concussion protocol
right now.
Speaker 6 (15:31):
He did.
Speaker 5 (15:31):
He does have some extra time because their last game
was last Thursday.
Speaker 6 (15:35):
He has ten ten days for They got to make
that decision, all right.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
The quarterback, right, you start there when you talk about
the offense. Daniel Jones his sixth year in the league.
Paul I couldn't believe that. I thought it was like
three or four for some reason. But no number six
for this guy. In twenty twenty two, we threw for
thirty two hundred yards, fifteen touchdowns, five interceptions.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
That was his best year.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
He rush for seven hundred eight yards and seven touchdowns.
That's what got him on everyone's radar. Right, that's what
got day Ball to say, Look, I want this to
be my guy because he was pretty safe with the
football and then he uses legs to get money as well.
But it's been a different store for him right this
year so far, he has thrown four eight hundred and
eighty one yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Daniel Jones
(16:18):
is a tricky player for me because he's one of
those guys that.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
Will lull you to sleep, sleep on, a sleep on.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
Then boom, he has that one exposed to play and
then you realize, okay, this is why he might be
getting paid forty million dollars a year, but he can't
do it consistently. I just hope that he doesn't do
it this weekend against the Seattle Seahawks. But if Neighbors
isn't there, he has limited options. We're talking about his
running back possibly won't be there.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
What do you seeing Daniel Jones?
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Look, he's a good athlete, he runs pretty well, he's capable.
Is he a guy that's going to put the team
on his shoulders and carry him?
Speaker 1 (16:54):
Now?
Speaker 5 (16:55):
I mean there's out a lot of them out there.
He's making forty million a year. What do you think
Geno Smith's worth forty more than that. I mean, Gino
Smith's a better quarterback period. You know, their offensive lines,
it's not good. They're big, but it's not as bad
as it's been in the past. Look, it's just a
(17:15):
game we should win, which makes you nervous. I mean,
I just start looking about. I go, they beat who
they end up beating they'd beat. I'm drawing up Browns, Browns.
They held Browns fifteen points. A lot of people do.
But here's the thing. They're not giving up a lot
of points.
Speaker 6 (17:30):
They're not.
Speaker 5 (17:31):
I mean against Washington, they gave up twenty one points.
Washington is putting up thirty plus on everybody right now.
They held the Cowboys to twenty points. You know they held.
The first game is the one that got away from
and they lost twenty eight to seven. But every other
game they've been within one score, so you know, again
they're capable. We're gonna have to play well. I'd like
to get some of our guys healthy. I think offensively, again,
(17:52):
we just keep doing what we're doing. Let's keep mixing
that run and pass. We got weapons across the board.
Our offensive lines getting better and better, you know, I
do think this. We play better defensively at home because
we're a team that needs that juice. We need that
crowd to really just give us that little edge. So
I'm really thankful we're gonna be home for the next
two weeks.
Speaker 4 (18:13):
Do you think because the system is so new, they
need that. Do you feel like as the season progresses,
the defense will be able to, as we say in
the golf.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
World, travel their game, go to.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
A different course and still be able to play with
the intensity that we've seen.
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Yeah, but there's some courses that you just look and
you play better because the way it looks, and you know,
we hear about it all the time. I just think
the way our skill players are. Look, we got guys
who are fast, so we can't have offensive linemen going, oh,
you're gonna be there. I know you're gonna be No, no, no,
you think I'm there, but I'm over here. It's got
(18:49):
to be I gotta be quick, I gotta be fast.
And there's just that, you know, extra juice that we need.
Speaker 6 (18:55):
We gotta gang tackle everything.
Speaker 5 (18:58):
You know, everybody's got to get to the It's not
that we don't do it on the road, but it's
just a little bit better at home, and obviously the
crowd makes it so we get off the ball better,
our pass rush is better.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
Everything.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
I think as his defense matures, as everyone settles into
their roles, and these twos get these reps, I think
it's valuable that these twos got the reps.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
Unfortunately it came in.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
A loss, but these guys now have been in the
game hopefully understand the role a bit better and maybe
maybe that game will travel Moyer.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
Maybe I think it can.
Speaker 5 (19:30):
But when you miss six starters, which we basically were
out last week on defense, six starters, I mean you're
getting it into your depth.
Speaker 6 (19:38):
Depth.
Speaker 5 (19:39):
It's just hard to play on the road against the
best teams in the league and ask them to go
win that. That's just it was tough. It was doable.
We could have got it done, but we didn't.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Yep, gotcha all right?
Speaker 4 (19:50):
When we come back, we will chat with Seahawks or
a Seahawk Derek Young on the phone.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
That is next right here on Hawks Live.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Hawks Live presented by the Dining District of the Bellevue
Collection at Bellevue Square Center Court, live on air on
Seattle Sports.
Speaker 4 (20:08):
Welcome back to Hawk's Live presented by the Dining District
at the Bellevue Collection. We're sitting here in front of
a thousand people. Man, it's live out here right now.
And now we're joined by wide receiver Derek Young.
Speaker 6 (20:19):
Dereek.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
What's up man? Hey? Are you doing? We're good man.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Thanks for taking time out of your Thursday and hollering
at us. Man, it's uh, it's crazy. It's year three
for you minute. It happens so quickly. What have you
learned about yourself in the game and during that journey?
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (20:37):
Yeah, Tom has been has been going by fast. I've
learned a few things about myself. I've learned that, uh,
that I could endure anything. You know, I'm up until
last year, I never had to have like surgery or
anything whenever I got hurt. And I had surgery last year,
so you know, I was at rock bottom, you know,
(20:58):
in the beginning of my rehab process. But just being
able to overcome the obstacles and come back an even
better player. In my opinion, I learned a lot about
myself during that time.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
Were you you know, I obviously Pete was there. They
draft you from leonor or Ryan, you know, smaller school.
You came, you prove yourself. I mean, you're a phenomenal athlete.
Were you nervous going into this or compared to maybe
even a year ago with a whole new coaching staff.
Speaker 7 (21:29):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (21:29):
No, I had three. I was a part of three
different coaching stuff, you know, in college during my five
years five years there, so I'm used to, you know,
meeting a whole new coaching staff, you know, a new
position coach and just going through that. I know that
first impression is everything. So I wanted to coming into
my third year, I wanted to set a good, you know,
(21:51):
example of the kind of player I was, the person
I was with this coaching stuff, and I feel like
that's what I did.
Speaker 4 (21:58):
Man, When you look at this offense, man, you mentioned
that you're used to having new coaches, new coordinators. What
does this offense? What does it look like? What is
this offense look like compared to last year's offense.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
I feel like compared to last year's offense, it has
similar concepts, just different verbage. I feel like we use
a lot more tempo with this offense, but it's it's
pretty similar, just different verbage, but uh in different tempos.
But it's definitely like this offense better though, for sure.
Speaker 6 (22:35):
Well it looks like, look, every week you guys have
gotten better.
Speaker 5 (22:38):
I mean watching the offensive line just feels like they're
getting closer and closer in sync to it.
Speaker 6 (22:44):
You know.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
Just staying on the running game, are there any differences
in the running game for some reason? It looks different
this year, just the way the offensive line is working together,
work to get to the second level, the way we
bring in tight ends at times in the running game,
particularly a lot of the receivers as well. Is there
anything you know that I'm seeing there as I'm just
(23:06):
my imagination.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
I think it's just our mansa as an as an offense.
You know, we have explosive guys in that running back room,
and we know there's just one block away from you know,
getting an explosive run. So you know, whenever a run
it's called, we want to put our best foot forward
and you know, get those guys free.
Speaker 4 (23:25):
What's it like during the season you're in week are
going into week five? The preparation because obviously during training
camp it's a bit more physical.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
You got the pads on a bit more.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
What's it like during this time of the year you
guys to throw the pads on. It's a bit more
walk through, talk me through it.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
It's definitely not as intense as training camp. You know,
we have about one padd of practice a week, you know,
to get our run fits and you know, get a
little banging going. But it's it's it's just really more
mental than it is during training camp. You know, getting
(24:04):
those mental reps. Not a lot of reps being passed out,
so you know, mainly the starters are getting the reps.
So the guys that are not stars, mental reps are
really big.
Speaker 5 (24:15):
Well, you guys, three games in eleven days. I know,
fans and media we talk about that a lot. How
does coach McDonald talk to you guys about that because
obviously short week this week and then you got to
turn right back around next week and play on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
Just we really really not really focused on the Thursday
night game right now. You know, Coach McDonald, he does
a good job of just telling us to take it
one week at a time, one game at a time,
and you know, when we get there, we'll get there.
But right now we're focused on the Giants. You know,
we're coming off in the l so we're trying to
get back in the win column, and I feel like
that's what we'll do this week.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
Rick, you have receptions in your career, but you've been
really felt on special teams.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
Man. I was a receiver myself.
Speaker 4 (25:02):
I remember getting to the league and the mask me
to run down and tackle a dude. I go, I
ain't done that since high school. Man, It's a different game.
How was your game evolved in that department?
Speaker 2 (25:12):
I feel like each year I've evolved my rookie year.
You know, I wasn't used to you know, running down there,
you know, making plays, but I was pretty good at it,
and then I just started to get more confident in
it started, you know, whichever player was, you know, on
the scout report for us, on the other teams, the
(25:33):
opposing teams, special teams, you know, I will talk to
them after the game and you know, get some advice
from those guys because most of those guys are like
eight nine, ten year vets in the league just strictly'll
playing special teams. So, you know, special teams just something
that people could make a living playing and really like
take care of their family doing. So It's not something
(25:53):
I looked down upon. It's something that I, you know,
I like I like doing, and I take pride in
being a receiver and being a four course best teams player.
You know, most other teams, most.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
Of other teams.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
Players who play best teams on all four teams are
defensive guys, So I take pride in it.
Speaker 5 (26:11):
Well, the Seahawks have a pretty good history and reputation
for Special Team Pro Bowlers. I mean it goes back
into the eighties where the Seahawks had three Special Team
Pro Bowlers from there, and then you know it's carried
on into the nineties two thousand, so I mean there's
something within the organization. But Bump was a former wide receiver.
I was a safety, and I'm looking at you. You're
(26:33):
six foot two listed at to twenty five. You're tough
to watch you. I mean, you can play just about anything.
Did you ever think about playing defense, and particularly in
the secondary, at any point when you're in college?
Speaker 2 (26:47):
Uh No, not in college. In high school and you know,
growing up playing Pop Worner where everybody played both sides.
I did play cornerback in safety, but making that switch
now probably probably not. I feel like now the game
is at this level, the game is too advanced in
the I would probably need like a full off season
(27:12):
of doing defensive backward.
Speaker 6 (27:14):
Hey, and I'm not wrecking. I'm not telling you to
do it.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
I just I watch as an athlete, and you know,
I mean, you know, I remember you were coming out.
You were, you know, four to four guy with a
thirty seven thirty eight inch vertical and I'm like this guy,
he could play either side of the ball. But I
was just more curious if you had ever wanted to
when you were younger. And you know, a lot of
times it's just somebody says, nope, you're you're on the
offensive side.
Speaker 6 (27:37):
You're you're an explosive kid.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
Yeah, hey, y'all, I definitely like playing offense better growing up.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
Yeah, for sure. We want touchdowns, man.
Speaker 4 (27:48):
You know more you're out there just trying to back
the ball out there, We're trying to take that thing.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
To the house. Come on now, Hey, hey Riegman.
Speaker 4 (27:56):
When I when I watch you play, there's like an
intensity of about you. I mean more, you're pointed out,
you know, the physicality six to two, about two twenty five,
two thirty, But there's an intensity about you out there.
Where where does that come from?
Speaker 8 (28:12):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (28:13):
Just you know, I can't you know, I can't be
out there playing softban six five, so definitely got to
be physical. And special teams is a physical part of
the game. You know a lot of those guys are
defensive guys, so like linebackers, and nowadays you got to
d n too who are running like defensive backs. They
put on special teams. So you know, those guys are
bigger than me, so I have to, you know, play
(28:35):
play up to my size and be physical just as
much as them.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
Hey side note, way to represent for the receivers out
there on special teams, man, you know they they try
to they try to pigeonhole us and just make us returners. Man,
way to get out there and and make plays for us.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Well, yeah, no problem.
Speaker 5 (28:52):
Absolutely. You're from Apex, North Carolina. Hopefully your family's out
of harm's way with the hurricane that hit there. A
lot of trees though in North Carolina. How have you
adapted out here to Seattle.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
I've adapted pretty well. I would say. The main difference
between here in North Carolina is the humidity. It's not
really any humidity out here, you know, in Seattle, even
though it rains a lot, but you know, it's pretty.
You know, dry heat. You know it always still good outside.
It's never too hot. But I would say that's the
(29:30):
main difference.
Speaker 6 (29:31):
No bugs either.
Speaker 4 (29:34):
Sometimes it depends the time here summertime, we get some
buzz all. Hey, Derek Man, we appreciate your time. Keep
doing your thing, and it's been fun watching you grow
and and you have.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
A good week.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
Man, Thank you, thank you for having me.
Speaker 3 (29:48):

Speaker 4 (30:35):
Today we had our pre show meal at Cactus. I
had the brisket burrito. It was fire, it was bomb,
it was on point. It was everything I needed to
get mine.
Speaker 5 (30:46):
I'm eating mine after our lovely server hostess Jenna.
Speaker 6 (30:52):
Yeah, she's great. You guys go see her.
Speaker 5 (30:54):
She'll treat you, right, I said, surprise me, so I'm
not even sure what I'm gonna be eating.
Speaker 3 (30:59):
Later, surprised, Brenda, What you have? Brenda? What you have?
Speaker 4 (31:03):
At Cactus? She had the same thing I had, So
there you go. I was hoping she hit me with
something different. But it's okay, all right. Matt had a
Chimmy chunga And Matt is the most like. He critiques everything,
so if he likes it, you know it's all good.
So make sure you guys go to Cactus and get
it all done. All right, we're actually switching some things up.
(31:25):
We're waiting on Farrell Brown to join us. He's our
guest for the night. A tight end for the Seahawks
played for the Patriots. Had one of the longest receptions
for a tight end last year. Yesterday, excuse me, Monday,
got in, made a crucial block, had a reception. So
I'm excited to talk to frol Broun. I've spoken to
him during training camp. My man is full of personality,
(31:46):
so that should be a good one for us.
Speaker 5 (31:47):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to I mean, he got a lot,
a lot of playing time last week, and yeah, they're
using the tight ends a lot. I mean one thing
about this offense, I mean the running backs. We even
talked about that they use running backs a lot in
the past.
Speaker 6 (31:59):
From game now.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
You know again it's they're gonna They're gonna take what
the defense gives him.
Speaker 6 (32:05):
But I went to talk with him.
Speaker 5 (32:07):
Because he ended up going to Oregon, and you know,
he's from Ohio and he originally had said he was
gonna go to Michigan.
Speaker 6 (32:17):
And I'm like, how in the world. I kind of
get how because of the.
Speaker 5 (32:22):
Whole Nike connection and how they buy them and bring
him over to Oregon and all that stuff. I'm teasing,
but you know, a guy goes from from Ohio to Eugene, Oregon.
I've been to Eugene. I used to have clients or
so I used to go there. You know, once a
month or so. I am not going because of Eugene
Organ not doing it.
Speaker 6 (32:45):
I'm gonna ask him. He's a he's a bigger man
than I am.
Speaker 5 (32:48):
He's about six foot seven, six foot eight, and he's
got his nice neon Lime Oregon outfit on.
Speaker 6 (32:57):
So he'll be ready here in a second up.
Speaker 4 (33:01):
Tight Ends are a crucial part of football, the most
changing position football, I would say.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
I would say tight.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
Ends and linebackers are the positions that are changing the most.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
Man.
Speaker 4 (33:11):
Tight Ends are asked to do a bit more these
days in the past game, and then these linebackers are
asked to do a bit more as far as coverage
and all that good stuff. So uh, it's only right
that we we talked to a tight end and Farawell Brown.
You guys clap it up one time for a Seahawks
tight end.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
Farrell Brown.
Speaker 6 (33:31):
Oh, good to see you man, Thanks for coming out.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
Good to see you.
Speaker 6 (33:34):
Appreciate you, man.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
We always appreciate you guys coming out on a Thursday,
especially short week. Oh yeah, I see you brought one
of your children with you.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
I got a couple.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
Oh there you go.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
Okay, now they're all all together. But are you bringing
some of your organ Nike gear here.
Speaker 9 (33:55):
Oh yeah, uh the organ in the Seahawks color. They
kind of go hand and head they do do they do?
So I got a lot of stuff that I can
pull out the chest.
Speaker 4 (34:04):
Last time I saw you had pink hare now and
that was blind. What's the what's the decision making like?
Because I'm bald, I don't have I can't make that decision.
Speaker 9 (34:11):
So what happened was I my gens is bald genetically,
so I figured I won't have fun before I go bald.
But one day my kids was trying to figure out
why daddy hair was black and they hair they got
this lovely hair blind hair, so they was trying to
figure out what my hair was the same color as there.
So I initially bleached it so we can all have
the same color. I love it, and then I let
(34:33):
the wife play around and that's how I ended up pinking.
Speaker 5 (34:37):
Well, before you came in here, you were walking and
we were kind of chatting with you. So I'll bring
this part up. And you've got a bit of your
organ connection there in Nike. You're you're from Ohio. I
know you probably have told the story a million times,
but they've never heard it. You initially connect to Michigan
and you end up going to Oregon. I used to
have clients out in Eugene. I'm like, I am not
(34:59):
going to Oregon because of Eugene, Org. You know, there's
obviously connection, but help us really understand.
Speaker 6 (35:05):
What is the draw that ultimately gets you over there. Uh.
Speaker 9 (35:11):
Back then it was Chip Kelly. I mean with Chip,
everything was you know, it was like it was innovative.
It was changed, like it was like he was running
the office that nobody ever seen. So everything there was
like what we was doing there was way before their time,
like with the facilities, you know, how we practice, how
(35:32):
they played. Everything was just you know, it was like
that new shoe that comes out like you see it indeed,
like oh I got to have it, and then two
months later is like in the back of your closet somewhere.
But uh, I think that was the biggest draw. And
then when we came out there, I mean they had Lebron,
Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, all the Nike guys was there
(35:54):
on our official visit, crab Legs.
Speaker 4 (35:57):
You know, they laid it all out for you man,
that's awesome. We were just talking about that over our pre
show meal. Honestly, how Oregon had all these guys on
the sideline like sc had a back back in my day.
When you talk about the chip Kelly offense being innovative,
have you seen some of that in the NFL. Now
you've seen the transition of chip Kelly chip Kelly's offense
(36:19):
in the NFL.
Speaker 9 (36:20):
Yeah, I mean you kind of just see it with
like the quarterbacks, you know, a few years ago, like
it was all like drop back quarterbacks, you know what
I mean, And then people kind of thought Lamar couldn't
play quarterback when he was coming in because how he played.
But now you see everything is kind of going towards
to you know, if your guy can't move, it's it's
going to be hard playing in the league. Like the
(36:41):
old drop back guys like peg Manny and all them
guys are kind of long gone, you know, as far
as how the game is playing. So I think that
transition in the league has taken over by storm now.
Speaker 7 (36:53):
You know.
Speaker 5 (36:53):
It's amazing is to look at your career and you
had a really tough injury, you know, and shout out
twenty fifteen, But so I'm looking at.
Speaker 6 (37:01):
Go man you're thirty years old. Now, this is your
eight year. I mean, you've been doing this a long time.
Speaker 5 (37:07):
It's weird for you to look back and think, and
this is my eighth year now in the NFL.
Speaker 9 (37:12):
Man, we just signed Jason Peters and he forty two
or you one. So I'm feeling real young right now.
You know, I'm just getting started.
Speaker 3 (37:21):
Peter's made me feel young, yolder me, I've been done.
Speaker 9 (37:24):
I couldn't believe it when I've seen it.
Speaker 6 (37:26):
It makes me. It makes me feel old.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
What have you learned most about yourself playing in the
league eight years? Because a lot of guys, Man, you
get three years in, a lot of guys are phased out.
But you've you've found a way to make yourself valuable
every single year. Man, We've you learned about the game
and yourself.
Speaker 9 (37:45):
I just learned just how to be resilient, you know,
with stuff and now gory a way just trusting my process,
saying what I do every year I've been in the league.
In eight years, I've had a new coach and a
new coaching staff. So proving yourself and doing all that,
you know, I'm proving myself to people that don't know
me every year and starting at the bottom because I
was undrafted, right, so just to be resilient and just
(38:08):
really just trust my process and I kind of know
that it works and it's been proven and proving amongst
a bunch of different coaching staff. So I just kind
of feel like at this point, you know, God has
brought me a long way, and like I never get
discouraged because I know that, you know, He don't bring
(38:30):
you this far away just to you know, drop you off,
you know what I mean. So I kind of just
stay grounded in that, in that in that matter, and
it's been working out for me.
Speaker 5 (38:40):
Well, I mean, you've been on a few teams. You've
just mentioned a few coaches, you got, you know, a family.
Speaker 6 (38:45):
How is that for the family.
Speaker 5 (38:48):
I mean, I'm sure you'd love to bury some roots,
you know, for four or five years, but what is
that like.
Speaker 9 (38:53):
On from city to Well, I'm excited now. Last year
I was in Boston, I lived in the hotel the
whole year, and our family was in Houston. So to
have them here it's been great. You know, my kids
are getting older. Just being able to come home and
see them has been great. Definitely would like to have
some roots, you know what I mean. Like right now,
(39:14):
my kids aren't in school, so they just having fun
and they like them moving. But you know, as they
getting older and school and everything, you want to kind of,
you know, find a little home base. But honestly, with
this job, that's kind of a lot to ask for
in a sense, you know what I mean, it's.
Speaker 6 (39:30):
Always moving parts.
Speaker 9 (39:32):
You know, you never know where you're gonna be. So
my family has we found a good mechanism to get
through these things, just from all the moving I've had
to do. Where do you guys call home right now?
We call it Houston home and also Mexico. Okay, there
we go.
Speaker 3 (39:51):
Man.
Speaker 4 (39:51):
Last time I spoke to you was in the summer
and we had some good conversation about the family. So
it's cool to see your family out here. You mentioned
taking them the Nickelodeon and doing reels and all that.
What's the what's the status on that you guys are
still putting them reals out with the kids or what.
Speaker 9 (40:06):
Yeah, the wife is, uh she's creating all the tiktoks
now and uh I think they just post herself. Uh,
so they're trying to man the TikTok it's like we
feel like the old parents, Like how all parents are
still on Facebook and you kind of get off of Facebook.
You're like, oh yeah, Facebook is too old now I
(40:26):
feel like, you know, I'm more like, I know Instagram,
so like TikTok is like the thing. That's why I said, reals,
I'm old. I'm like Instagram. But like my nephews and nieces,
they like I'll be calling them. How did y'all do that? Like,
let me know how you.
Speaker 4 (40:41):
What's your what's your TikTok? Let the people know so
they can follow, and.
Speaker 9 (40:44):
Uh, our TikTok is the Brown family. I want to say,
it's the brown fan.
Speaker 4 (40:50):
Brown family wife. He had not be good Brown family. There,
y'all follow on TikTok the Brown family.
Speaker 6 (40:55):
That's impressed.
Speaker 5 (40:56):
It's not like that's not a common name to be
able to get that.
Speaker 9 (41:00):
Oh yeah, that's pretty good family.
Speaker 5 (41:01):
Okay, so look for you're on radio. But look you
you've got a presence about it. You're a nice looking man.
I mean you you definitely carry yourself. Well, what what
what is life after football? When at finally ends? You
already have plans for that?
Speaker 9 (41:15):
Hopefully drinking peanut Colada somewhere well one of these water
views like here in the beautiful views of Seattle. But uh,
I mean I've always kind of positioned myself, uh for
life after football as far as like what I would do,
you know, I just want to be able to.
Speaker 6 (41:34):
Give myself choices.
Speaker 9 (41:35):
Uh. I've invested a lot into real estate. Uh, have
some private equity investments. Energy drinks that's kind of blowing
up right now. We actually in all the seven elevens.
Speaker 6 (41:47):
Uh, get you.
Speaker 9 (41:49):
Some of those are natural. It's called lucky energy. Lucky energy. Yeah, OK,
one down. So I've always just positioned myself in that way.
I went back to school right now. I'm not taking classes.
I took summer classes, but I'm getting my masters in finance.
Speaker 6 (42:03):
Good for you.
Speaker 9 (42:05):
Just continue learning and like meeting new people, honestly, and.
Speaker 6 (42:11):
Just see where that go.
Speaker 9 (42:12):
But as far as like exactly what I want to do,
I'd be having I'm having fun doing all the media
stuff and acting. I did some acting when I was
in college, so I want to get some small stuff
back in there. But honestly, just position myself to where
the money that I'm blessed with is making money and
just raising my kids honestly.
Speaker 3 (42:33):
That's how you do it.
Speaker 4 (42:35):
Like we mentioned several times, you've been in the league
eight years, but you got to see Aj Barner score
his first first touchdown. What was that like for the
tight end room to see the youngster getting the end zone?
Speaker 9 (42:46):
It was good, man. I was in on that play
and I seen it like pop open out the corner
of my eye and I was like, man, this is
wide open. And then we went on the sideline and
seeing it it was. It was a good experience. I
think he threw the ball, but they ended up getting
the ball back. But he had a great game. I
was in there when he jumped out. We was joking
(43:06):
on the sideline about that, like, bro, do not jump
in the air like that? That was all his other
big catcher. It just looked like a big orchard whel
or so just gliding through the air. Being a coach
and everybody was laughing about it. But I'm excited. Man,
he's playing at a high level right now.
Speaker 5 (43:20):
You guys just played Monday physical game, you know, Detroit,
more physical than actually they appeared to even going into
that game watching it.
Speaker 6 (43:29):
How's your body feeling?
Speaker 5 (43:30):
And you got another physical game coming up against the Giants.
Speaker 9 (43:34):
Man, my body's feeling good these short weeks is this
is probably the hardest part of the year of any
season when you get that. You know, well, for us,
we all would Seattle, so that travel to Detroit was big.
Speaker 3 (43:49):
Now we're day short.
Speaker 9 (43:51):
The Giants got ten days of rest and then we
got another Thursday game. Just looking ahead one week. The
body's feeling the best. Is gonna be guys out there
that when you there, everybody be like, oh, are you
one hundred percent? Like my wife was just asking me,
I think I'm on the injury port. She was like,
how's your knee? I was like, maybe, don't pay attention
to that, none of that stuff. That's you know, I'm
(44:13):
all right. But the only time you feel one hundred
percent is when you come in in spring ball. After
spring you never playing the game at one hundred percent.
It's it's kind of a fairy tale. In the league,
it's always something nagging. I mean, these guys out here
are huge and physical guys. In every game, no matter
who you're gonna play, it's going to be physical for sure.
Speaker 4 (44:34):
Yeah, that's what the one thing I don't think people get. Man,
it's a grind out there. Man, especially for guys like
you who playing the box, you know, playing the box outside.
Speaker 3 (44:41):
You're asked to do a lot of things.
Speaker 4 (44:43):
What's your favorite thing about football and playing the tight
end position?
Speaker 9 (44:48):
Uh, probably just the physicality of it, just being imposing
your will on other people, hitting people. It's a it's
just a fun thing. It's like an old Warriors you know.
It reminds me of like that when you watch all
the movies, three hundred movies and just that kind of
seem kind of feel. Uh yeah, that's probably my favorite
(45:12):
part is the physicality.
Speaker 6 (45:14):
I played seven years.
Speaker 5 (45:15):
My kids were too young when I played, and it's
funny now my son's thirty, he's starting to watch on
my old tapes.
Speaker 6 (45:23):
You're pretty good and your kids know what you do?
Speaker 9 (45:26):
Uh not really, man, the kind of they had a
old thing they I actually had a THEO passes so
it was on the sideline and like this is supposed
to be a cool thing. You're on the sideline. That
little bit field is freaking crazy. The kids like, well, mom,
I just want to go to my season eat popcorn.
And I'm like, it's kids in the stands that a
freaking relished them over to be on the sideline and
(45:47):
they just they want to watch the cheerleaders and eat popcorn. So, uh,
my other, my youngest son, he it's hard for him
to find me, but if they showed me, they all
see me. He's starting to play football, but I'm still
trying to teach him the rules. If he gets tackled
or he doesn't score, everybody's cheating and he's gonna take
(46:11):
the ball and run and go in the house and
nobody can play. So I'm still trying to teach him
the rules because we got to fix that.
Speaker 3 (46:18):
Well, it's a beautiful thing.
Speaker 9 (46:20):
Man.
Speaker 4 (46:21):
I'm glad to see you and your family because we
had a good conversation about the family during the training
cap Man, and I appreciate you coming out and making time.
Speaker 3 (46:28):
Man, get up one more time for tight end Farrell Brown.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
All right, we'll be come back. We'll go around the NFL.
That is next right here.
Speaker 3 (46:35):
On Hawk's Lot.
Speaker 1 (46:36):
Hawks Live presented by the Dining District at the Bellevue
Collection of at Bellevue Squares Center Court, every Thursday from
seven to nine live on air on Seattle Sports Now.
If you're your host, Michael Bumpis Paul.
Speaker 4 (46:50):
Moyer, Welcome back, to Hawks Live, presented by the Dining District.
I'm Michael bumpas with Paul Moyer. We were just joined
by Farrell Brown.
Speaker 3 (46:59):
Nice even.
Speaker 4 (46:59):
I love it when you see these athletes with their families. Man,
they become human, right You guys just see them in
their uniforms and their helmets.
Speaker 3 (47:06):
And you don't make that connection.
Speaker 4 (47:07):
You see them walking around with their family, and then
they become human.
Speaker 2 (47:11):
Man.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
I really love that and appreciate that.
Speaker 4 (47:14):
But it's time for us now to go around the NFL.
If you didn't know, there's a game going on tonight,
Thursday night football on Prime really easy to find, right,
really easy to find.
Speaker 3 (47:25):
No, it's not.
Speaker 4 (47:26):
But the score right now, Tampa Bay Buccaneers thirty the
Atlanta Falcons twenty seven. Would about three minutes and thirty
seconds left in the game. Pretty well, we'll see who
do I want to I don't care who wins, but
I picked Atlanta to win. I picked Atlanta to win.
Speaker 5 (47:42):
I think of it more for the Seahawks, right, we
gotta play Atlanta.
Speaker 3 (47:46):
You need Atlanta to.
Speaker 4 (47:46):
Win because you don't want the Bucks to be you know, they're.
Speaker 3 (47:49):
Three to one right now.
Speaker 5 (47:50):
Yeah, Look, I want to win the West. You know,
a year ago, I would have been thinking that maybe
I want to Land or Lucia. I look at that
wild card this year, I'm thinking, hey, we got a
game lead. I think we're a good football team. We
got to get healthy. I think I prefer Atlanta to
win too.
Speaker 3 (48:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (48:07):
I don't want anybody running away with great record in
the NFC.
Speaker 4 (48:11):
Keep it close. Let's talk about the Vikings. Talk about
running away with it. Vikings are four and oh Sam
Darnold was thrown away, forgotten and Kevin O'Connell said, you
know what, come over here to the Vikings. I'm going
to draft a quarterback. He tears his meniscus and now
he is. He is playing like the best quarterback in
the game right now.
Speaker 3 (48:32):
I love these stories.
Speaker 4 (48:33):
He's it's like a Geno Smith all over again, but
this time with the Minnesota Vikings.
Speaker 5 (48:37):
Yeah, I mean again, you just don't want to be
drafted by a New York team.
Speaker 3 (48:41):
You do not.
Speaker 5 (48:41):
I mean, I mean, they just don't play well early
there at Midwell, where's the pressure. But I remember when
Sam Donald first came out, I mean they talked about
his upside was huge, his unbelievable arm. You know he
couldn't handle New York. There's a lot of guys who
haven't been able to handle New York. Aaron Rodgers ruggling
to handle New York right now. But the Vikings are
(49:03):
loaded with talent. I mean they have a really good defense,
probably the best wide receiver in the game. It's a
good story. There's absolutely zero pressure on him. He has
no competent. There's no one there looking over his shoulder anymore.
The town loves him. We'll see what happens when they
finally get some adversity. They're going to London. Right now,
they're playing the Jets early game on Sundays.
Speaker 6 (49:26):
Waking up.
Speaker 3 (49:27):
Well, of course, yeah you up, Yeah, I might be
a best sell.
Speaker 6 (49:30):
Run it sixty I'll run.
Speaker 5 (49:33):
I can't remember sixty something. Yeah, of course I'm up.
You know, we get up on it.
Speaker 3 (49:38):
We get up. I feel you, I feel you. Another story.
Speaker 4 (49:42):
I'm looking at the Pittsburgh Steelers and Justin Fields and
he's winning ball games. It's not pretty, it's not impressive,
but it's enough to keep Russell on the bench. What
do you think of that situation over there? They are
also in the running, supposedly to grab Davonte Adams, but
I think he's going to the New York Jets.
Speaker 5 (49:57):
Yeah, that seems like that would be a good player.
Are going to go all in. It's probably going to
kill this team now for years to come. But you know,
I don't care much. I don't care much about DeVante
Adams at all. I think the Pittsburgh thing's interesting just
because we're vested into Russell Wilson in the past, right,
(50:17):
and you're just kind of curious to see some people say, well,
he's done. I go, he hasn't done anything to be done.
He just had a calf injury and they're winning. I mean,
it happens when you start winning and there's another quarterback
and there's not you know, not necessarily winning because of him,
but you're not losing because of him either.
Speaker 6 (50:36):
Man. It's hard to don't see that.
Speaker 5 (50:37):
I don't see Russell getting a shot unless the offense
really tanks. It's not a good offense and they just
start losing and they need some type of spark. So
justin Fields looks actually better than he has over the
last couple of years. He can still run, He's making
the the.
Speaker 6 (50:54):
Throws he needs to make.
Speaker 5 (50:55):
Now. I don't think he's ever going to beat you
with his arm. But he's a guy with his legs
and shround him. With a good running game at a
great defense, you can win a lot.
Speaker 3 (51:03):
Of games, all right.
Speaker 4 (51:04):
This one was short and sweet because we had such
a good conversation with Pharl Brown. We went a little long.
So when we come back, we'll go inside the film
where we're gonna break down three plays.
Speaker 3 (51:13):
That is next right here on Hawk's Live.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
Hawks Live presented by the Dining District of the Bellevue
Collection at Bellevue Square Center Court, live on air on
Seattle Sports.
Speaker 4 (51:25):
This is Hawks Live every Thursday right here at BLV
Square Center Court. On Michael Bamas with Paul Moyer at
his time to break down the film. I don't know
if you guys know this about Paul Moyer. He loves
watching film, so do I. But he might love it
more than me because I will get a text at
ten thirty.
Speaker 3 (51:44):
My phone goes on silent at nine.
Speaker 4 (51:46):
I'll get a text at ten thirty and Paul is saying,
bump Man that you see number forty seven for this
guy man here. That first step is false. I think
if we attack him this way, we should be good,
and I look at it and I go I'll.
Speaker 3 (51:57):
Respond in the morning. Moyer is grinding film.
Speaker 4 (52:00):
So it's time for us to do exactly what Paul
likes to do and look at some film.
Speaker 3 (52:04):
This first play we're breaking down.
Speaker 4 (52:05):
Gino Smith finds JSN, who laterals to Zach Charbonay for
the first down on third and sixteen.
Speaker 3 (52:11):
This is a creative play.
Speaker 7 (52:13):
Trip set right, Charbona out of the backfield, three man rush,
quick throw coming underneath JSN.
Speaker 8 (52:19):
On a quick throwback side Charbona down the near sidelines,
first down.
Speaker 3 (52:24):
Wow, pull one out.
Speaker 6 (52:26):
Of the back of the playbook.
Speaker 8 (52:27):
A slant rap of JSN coming in from the right side.
Speaker 3 (52:32):
He makes the catch.
Speaker 8 (52:33):
Charbona is in the left flat, so it's a backwards
pass that he throws to Charbonay, who takes off up
the sidelines and picks up nineteen and a first down.
Speaker 4 (52:44):
Wow, what a design, Moawyer, as your buddy Dave Wyman
would say, Our buddy, this play took some stones to call.
Speaker 3 (52:53):
You're calling this on third and sixteen.
Speaker 4 (52:56):
You got trips to the right, got DK to the
left by himself, so you have Jasen as the number
one receiver that means he's the furthest receiver out inside
of Jaysn you have looks like Tyler Lockett, and I
think that's Pharrell Brown the tight end. So Jayson runs
a little slant. Gino gives him the football. Jayson picks
(53:17):
up a couple of blocks from Pharol Brown and Tyler Lockett,
and now you have Zach Charbonay on the other side
of the field. Jayson does a good job throwing the
ball backwards so it's not a forward pass. Zach Scharbona
catches the rock, picks up a block from DK. Metcalf
gets up the field to call this play. Here's my
question with this play. Is this something that they stole
from Detroit a couple of weeks ago or something that
(53:39):
they've held on since training camp. You always have those
plays where it's like, all right, if we get into
a situation, we might call this. Most of the times
you don't call this play. It's just always there. What
do you see more?
Speaker 6 (53:51):
Yeah, I mean, look, it's copycat league.
Speaker 5 (53:52):
You remember the one we've seen was when Walt or
Shane Waldron did it where you know they fake the
screen to the last face, the screen to the right
against forty nine ers and then we hit the tight
end down the middle. And I've seen it like three
or four. I just say, I just saw that again.
I go, we just ran that who we stole from
someone else. Going into this play, we were zero for
(54:13):
eighteen on third down.
Speaker 3 (54:15):
And ten plus wow.
Speaker 5 (54:16):
And so I'm watching across the round, I go, Okay,
we're playing a little field position here.
Speaker 6 (54:21):
Huge play at the time too. I just I love group. Man.
It's just you're right.
Speaker 5 (54:27):
Some people just oh, I'm gonna save this for the
last play of the game. Man, don't save for the
last play. Save it for when you absolutely need it
and can matter. And yeah, just you called it great.
I was, There's it's so well executed at to across
the board. Everybody's blocked perfect, the timing of it. I was,
I was looking. I go, if you wait longer, that
(54:48):
play doesn't work because of the way the bat comes
out of the back.
Speaker 6 (54:52):
You throw it to early.
Speaker 5 (54:53):
Someone kind of came off earlier and possibly if you know,
stopping from even throwing it.
Speaker 6 (54:57):
So again, really well executed. It's great, coach.
Speaker 4 (55:00):
And I think another underrated part of that is the
receivers to jaysn if they made contact with the defender
too early, that play is going to be called. They're
going to be flagged for passing appearance. So, like you mentioned,
executed perfectly. The timing Gino letting go on the football,
the receivers blocking the defenders, even Dekal on the other side,
(55:21):
kind of building a wall for Zach Charbaay to get around.
And let's not underestimate the throw by Jasn. I mean,
you still gotta throw that thing and hit Zach Scharbaay.
So that was awesome, man, I love the play call.
Copycat League. We saw it a couple of times. You
and I were trying to figure out where we saw
at the weekend. I think it was in college football
we saw that same play. I don't know, we're getting
(55:42):
it out of Yeah, well, yeah, I don't remember anyway, Right.
Speaker 3 (55:45):
Let's get to the next play.
Speaker 4 (55:46):
This next play Ken Walker our twenty one yard touchdown
in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 7 (55:50):
Walker stays in the backfield, this time single wide out
to each side.
Speaker 6 (55:54):
Motion across the formation is the tight end.
Speaker 8 (55:56):
Toss to Walker, cuts back inside, turns up field out
of the fifteenth He's gonna score ten five he does
in touchdown. See Hawks from twenty one out ken Walker
the third welcome back brother, big score for the Hawks
again getting back in the game, and again Dave great
(56:16):
blocking at the point of attack.
Speaker 3 (56:18):
All right, so I have a theory with this play.
You let me know what you think.
Speaker 4 (56:22):
All right, They're in a double tight formation. They're in
a one by one like in a wing. One wing
to the right, one wing to the left. You get
DK tight to the formation. Left you have I believe
that's Jason DK to the right, Jason to the left.
So AJ Barner goes in motion and essentially they're running
a zone to the left. You have another tight end
to the left side. I think that tight end is
(56:43):
supposed to release and get that backer, and the tight
end emotion is supposed to kick out the wing or
Aiden Hutchison right there.
Speaker 3 (56:50):
They end up getting a double team. So now there's a.
Speaker 4 (56:52):
Free linebacker right there, which forces ken Walker to move
back to the right.
Speaker 3 (56:57):
I think there was a miscommunication. There are just a
bust in the play.
Speaker 4 (57:00):
Yeah, ken Walker doing what he does, being special makes
that makes that thing happen. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (57:05):
I mean, look, there is some good blocking me and
we got two double teams that are really well blocked.
We do kick out Hutchinson on this thing. I think
got Hutchinson right.
Speaker 3 (57:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (57:13):
And then and when I say kick him out, I
mean a J.
Speaker 3 (57:15):
Barne.
Speaker 6 (57:16):
I'm not at it's not even a J.
Speaker 3 (57:17):
Barn Is that Farrell I think it is.
Speaker 6 (57:20):
I mean he knocks a crap out of them.
Speaker 5 (57:22):
I mean it's like he knocks him three yards to
the side, not that he went down. And then you
have Barner comes in and cleans that up. But you're
right the linebacker because no one grabs him. He flashes
into the kind of the just outside the tackle, and
that forces Canine to cut back. Look at this is
there's just not very many running backs in the league
(57:43):
and make this cutback this quick. What's so impressive on
this is he does he makes one guy miss the linebacker.
When I say makes a miss, he just gives him
a little bit of a limp leg and then he's
at full acceleration by the time he gets to the safety,
who's in a pretty good position.
Speaker 6 (57:58):
And I don't even think he gets a hand him.
Speaker 5 (58:00):
Maybe he gets a hand on him, and the speed
and the other guy's got an angle on him too,
and no go man, his speed's incredible. I think Ken
I can do anything. He can be a power running
back when he wants to. He'd be great out of
the backfield. If you want to run between the tackles,
no problem, because he'll make one guy miss and go.
He has this ability to cut back. We saw his
one touchdown when we played the Is it the Bronco?
(58:22):
Who is the third game we played Miami Is he
the Broncos or Miami where he made a guy miss
very similar to this, even though we were on the
play side to our right, very similar. He got to
the corner. Nobody can catch this guy. I mean, his
speed is incredible. I think he is a premier running back.
I'm We'll say it again. If he stays healthy, he
will make the Pro Bowl this year.
Speaker 3 (58:43):
Pro Bowl. You heard it here first from Wawyer.
Speaker 4 (58:45):
All right, Next play, Geno Smith finds JSN on on
a fourth down conversion, but it was negated thanks to
a suspect passing affair.
Speaker 7 (58:53):
As a call ball is at the Lions thirty nine.
A trip set to the right, empty backfield for Geno
takes the shotgun, snap shifts.
Speaker 8 (59:06):
Got a man wide open JSN, but a flag comes flying.
Speaker 7 (59:09):
In and we make got an interference call on the
Seahawks coming inside and blocking to release JSN out to
the flat. Let's see if that's going to be the call.
Kind of a pick play. We used to run them
all the time. I can see DK is not happy,
nor is Gino. But the conversation continues. So maybe fast
(59:35):
interference offense number sixteen for ten.
Speaker 6 (59:38):
Year family with three four thousands.
Speaker 4 (59:42):
This one really got me. Hot Moyer, you want to
take the lead on this one.
Speaker 5 (59:45):
I'll take the lead just because this place so upsetting
to me. I love me some offensive pass interference call, right,
I mean not called nearly enough in my opinion, it's
just not I mean, if you look at the play,
first of all, when Tyler takes off the one defensive
(01:00:06):
back who's trying to go over the top to cover
JSN pigeons Tyler locket. There's nowhere for him to go.
All he's doing is running straight like aur go route.
It's not his job to avoid anybody. Even if it
was a pit play, it's not a pit play. The
other thing is why you jamming Tyler seven yards downfield?
(01:00:28):
Here's another one. Go watch DK. DK throws his arms
up in the air. He's really upset he's being held
on the crossing route. They don't call that one. The
only flag that they throw is not a flag. It
should not have been a penalty other than maybe an
illegal hit downfield by their defensive backs. You can't call
(01:00:49):
this ever, and you definitely can't call it in a
situation like that in the game. I'm gonna say it's
gonna lost the game. I mean whatever, But wow, did
it have a huge impact on a game?
Speaker 6 (01:00:59):
And we're dry and the ball.
Speaker 5 (01:01:00):
We're down eight at the time, should have been down seven,
but we're down eight at the time.
Speaker 6 (01:01:05):
Just don't get it.
Speaker 4 (01:01:07):
No, The thing that if it's a pick play, if
it's a true pick play, you're coaching Tyler Lockett to
get to the outside shoulder of that defender to stop
him from going across the field to JSM. Tyler Lockett
gets contact and then takes the inside shape to release.
Speaker 5 (01:01:24):
Oh let me, you made up a good point there.
The pick play is Tyler needs to get the guy
who's going over the top. Yeah, exactly, So he didn't
even get the guy that he's trying to pick.
Speaker 6 (01:01:38):
That's how that's how bad that even touch me?
Speaker 4 (01:01:40):
You know it's real because I went on x AKA
Twitter and I posted, I go, that was such a
horrible call, and there's some people come on bump you
gotta look at it, and I say, look, I stand
by my call, And all of a sudden, when the
video's out, the people's just quiet because they're seeing the
same thing. It's like, Look, football is a contact sport.
As a receiver, like you mentioned, it's not my job
(01:02:02):
to avoid any contact, all right, It's my job to
get through the contact.
Speaker 3 (01:02:06):
And that's what I posted.
Speaker 4 (01:02:07):
I go, this is Tyler Lockett working through contact. It
happens on a lot of plays in the NFL when
the receiver's releasing up the field on an aggressive corner.
So they got it wrong. And we're ballplayers, former ballplayers.
You never want to let one play determine the game, right.
You never want to point the finger and say, well,
if this didn't happen, then you know they wouldn't be
(01:02:28):
in that situation.
Speaker 3 (01:02:29):
They were where they were. It happened.
Speaker 4 (01:02:31):
But it's unfortunate that the referees felt like it felt
like the referees just had a big influence on the outcome.
Speaker 5 (01:02:38):
Of considering DK got tackled in the end zone. Back
right in front of a referee and they didn't call it.
Speaker 4 (01:02:43):
Yep, all right, we're done crying. Yeah, all right, We're
moving on to the New York Giants. All right, man,
we'll come back and time to talk that talk. Boy
and I will square up and talk about some topics.
He'll tell me I'm wrong. I'll tell him he's wrong,
and you guys will tell me I'm right. That's next
right here on Hawk's lot.
Speaker 1 (01:03:00):
It's time to talk that talk with Michael Bumpis and
Paul Moyer on Hawk's Live.
Speaker 4 (01:03:07):
Welcome back to Hawks Live of Michael Bamas with Paul Moyer.
Speaker 3 (01:03:10):
It is Thursday. It ain't seven anymore.
Speaker 4 (01:03:12):
It's a thirty five, but we started at seven, and uh,
this is one of my favorite parts of the show.
Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
Man.
Speaker 4 (01:03:18):
Get to throw some topics out there and make your argument.
You know, when I was young, I used to, uh
happen to miss a couple of periods of school and
be at home and watch Judge Judy. This gives me
like Judge Judy, Judge Joe Mathis, you know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:03:33):
Jerry Springer rest in peace.
Speaker 6 (01:03:35):
Honestly say, I've never watched Judged.
Speaker 3 (01:03:37):
You never what people's Court.
Speaker 6 (01:03:40):
She's worked over one hundred People's Court. I just never
never watched the People's Court. I was working, man, man,
you're young, I was working, you.
Speaker 3 (01:03:47):
Were I mean, come on, everybody got time for the
People's book. Now if you.
Speaker 5 (01:03:50):
Went back to my college dation and yeah, I used
to get watch General Hospital.
Speaker 6 (01:03:57):
And and what's the other soap opera? Anyways?
Speaker 5 (01:04:01):
Yeah, I was big the rest of us, no, not younger.
Is all my all my children, all children, Erica whatever.
Speaker 6 (01:04:09):
Yeah, I was into that.
Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
All my children will continue.
Speaker 6 (01:04:11):
General Hospital was a.
Speaker 5 (01:04:12):
Big one though, all right, Luke and the other girl
bringing back memories, Lane, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:04:18):
Some of y'all too young to remember that. Nicole, you're
too young.
Speaker 6 (01:04:21):
Some of you know who I'm talking about. Come on,
all my children, General Hospital.
Speaker 3 (01:04:26):
Come on, are you ready to do this? Let's do it?
You leave the charge, all right?
Speaker 5 (01:04:30):
Look, I want to read you. I want to do over.
I want another shot at these forty nine or excuse me,
Detroit Lions. But I need them, and it is to
be healthy. So the fully healthy Seahawk team will beat
the Lions if we meet again in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (01:04:45):
Oh, they getting them, They are getting them, no doubt
about it.
Speaker 3 (01:04:49):
Man, it was.
Speaker 4 (01:04:51):
It was impressive to watch the Detroit Lions work right.
As football guys, you appreciate good football when you see
it good. Their offensive line was aggressive, defensive line was
on point. Aiden Hutchison affected the game and did not
record a tackle or a set and he was everywhere.
Speaker 3 (01:05:07):
Man, I think the energy.
Speaker 4 (01:05:10):
That was in the building that night helped him out
as well. And when you're playing against twos, look twos
or twos for a reason. Yeah, no disrespect to them,
but they're just not good enough to be ones. So
when you got four or five twos out there on
one side of the football, you are going to feel it.
If the Seahawks are completely healthy, there's no.
Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
Doubt in my mind they get it done.
Speaker 4 (01:05:30):
Because it was forty two to twenty nine and it
wasn't really forty two to twenty nine. There are a
couple of things that went Detroit's away, so one hundred
percent see them again good to go.
Speaker 5 (01:05:39):
Yeah, I agree with that, And here's why it makes
me feel good. I think Detroit's a complete team. I
think they're well coached. I think they got two good
fronts that are a problem for teams. They're they're physical
at the linebacker spot.
Speaker 6 (01:05:53):
I mean, they just play with massive effort.
Speaker 5 (01:05:56):
They have corners that know how to cheat just enough
or to ride defense of the rules, you know, and
force referees to to make the calls. I think they're
a complete team. I think they're a Super Bowl contending team.
And I think we're healthy and just get a couple
of calls or I think we get them again.
Speaker 6 (01:06:14):
So I want that shot. I want it. I want
it bad, but I prefer it be here.
Speaker 4 (01:06:19):
Yeah, I agree, nothing like home field of Vatas No.
All right, next one we got. The defensive line will
be the deciding fact on whether this team will be
good or great?
Speaker 3 (01:06:30):
Or is it the offensive line? Which one?
Speaker 5 (01:06:32):
Well, I think we've seen the offensive line, and I
think they're they're improving each game. I think, look, I
think there's a limit to where they go, you know,
just from a skills standpoint, But I like what I see.
I think they can turn games physical, that we mix
in the run game, which is intricate at times. U
and I think what Gino's doing with all the skill
set we have at receiver.
Speaker 6 (01:06:52):
We can beat you throwing it, we can beat you
running it. We can play a high scoring game.
Speaker 5 (01:06:57):
So I think this last week just proved that our
defensive line has got to be healthy and we've got
to be dominant. We've got to let our linebackers run.
We've got to be able to put pressure on a
quarterback so our dvs start making some receptions getting turnovers.
When we were we just we just didn't have We
sudn't have enough starters in the game last week and
that affected us. Now I am curious because we may
(01:07:19):
not get everybody healthy this week. Detroit's offensive line may
have been so good that I go, all right, that
that kind of skewed it. But from what I saw
last week, for us to be great, we've got to
have our defensive line healthy and play it at a
high level.
Speaker 4 (01:07:34):
I use this analogy on the Bump and Stay show
ten to two. Paul Atis, all right, I said the
Detroit Lions game was like swinging the weighted club to
warm up, like you're fighting a guinsts and you're finding gifts.
And whereas this week, man, these twos have gotten some reps,
so they'll be a bit more loose this time around
if they do get some playing time. But I think
(01:07:55):
with the skill guys with Gino, the receivers with Jay
Love will if he's healthy to go, with Jenkins in
the corners.
Speaker 3 (01:08:04):
It's all about all the d line.
Speaker 4 (01:08:05):
If the D line can stop the run and get pressure,
the offense is shown. Look we're good enough to carry
this team for a while. Five hundred and sixteen yards
of offense, thirty eight first downs, franchise record.
Speaker 6 (01:08:18):
I've never seen that before.
Speaker 4 (01:08:19):
You out rushed the Lions, you threw for more yards,
you had more first downs, just.
Speaker 3 (01:08:24):
Couldn't get stopped by the way. Should be nine, shouldn't
be thirty nine.
Speaker 6 (01:08:27):
Yeah, but they called that more correct.
Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
I thought we were done crying.
Speaker 6 (01:08:31):
That's just a little It was just more like a sniffle, sniffle, Yeah, okay, yeah,
I've got one.
Speaker 3 (01:08:37):
More, ye one more.
Speaker 5 (01:08:40):
Houston Astle start off seven to nineteen. At one point,
the Marias had a ten game lead. They didn't knock
him out, and football, you know, a two to three
game lead.
Speaker 6 (01:08:49):
Look, forty nine. We got to take them out while
we got a shot.
Speaker 5 (01:08:53):
The Seahawks will be all alone and in first place
two weeks from this time next Thursday.
Speaker 3 (01:09:03):
So the Niners are two and two. They played the Cardinals.
Speaker 6 (01:09:05):
Play the Cardinals.
Speaker 4 (01:09:06):
Cardinals fooled me for a week and then I figured
out who they really are. They're just the Cardinals of old.
So I think the Niners are going to take care
of the Cardinals.
Speaker 5 (01:09:16):
And they were one game lead, all right, then we
go and play. They come here on Thursday night and
you beat them. It's it's two gamely, but you beat
them to truly a three game lead.
Speaker 6 (01:09:26):
Yep, that's equivalent of like a ten game lead.
Speaker 4 (01:09:29):
And you know what makes me even more optimistic about
beating the Niners. No, Christian McCaffrey, I know they got
other weapons.
Speaker 3 (01:09:40):
Will be back.
Speaker 6 (01:09:40):
No, they're all back but him.
Speaker 3 (01:09:42):
Yeah, but Mason has been balling there. They're running back.
He's a second one, a rusher in the league.
Speaker 6 (01:09:47):
I want, I want. We need to be healthy.
Speaker 3 (01:09:49):
That d line needs to be healthy.
Speaker 6 (01:09:50):
They gotta be healthier. It's gonna be a Detroit game.
Speaker 4 (01:09:52):
Do you really think I'm gonna sit here and say
that the Hawks are not going to be in sole
possession of first. You know, I'm not want to say that.
Speaker 3 (01:09:58):
Moyer.
Speaker 2 (01:09:59):
I'm good.
Speaker 4 (01:10:00):
I sing vibes of the universe and it all comes back.
So I'm sending it out there.
Speaker 5 (01:10:04):
It feels like this is the time that we closed
the gap.
Speaker 3 (01:10:09):
Right when's the last time we beat them?
Speaker 6 (01:10:11):
It's been a while.
Speaker 5 (01:10:12):
I mean, they've got our number right now, twenty twenty one.
I was I was in my fifties.
Speaker 3 (01:10:19):
I was, uh, mid thirties instead of pushing forty.
Speaker 6 (01:10:23):
Yeah, three years ago, three.
Speaker 3 (01:10:25):
Years a lot.
Speaker 5 (01:10:26):
Three years ago is like a lifetime. It's like a
ten game lead in baseball.
Speaker 6 (01:10:31):
Now.
Speaker 5 (01:10:31):
I feel like this is the time. They're not playing great.
They're still a really good football team, you know that.
I feel like we did not play great. We were
undermanned in this last game. We've played a Super Bowl
contended team who played a great game, and we still
had a chance to beat them. Yeah, now's the time, man.
You can't waste it going. You gotta beat giants on
a short week and you put your stamp on it,
(01:10:51):
like no messing around, but your I won't. I don't
want to get too graph to do that. And then
you get ready for the short week. They get to
fly here and if you're healthy, man, it's going that's
a big game.
Speaker 6 (01:11:03):
And then I fly Friday morning to Dallas.
Speaker 5 (01:11:06):
I'm in a great mood and my grandbaby my son's
getting married that Saturday. It's gonna be it's gonna be
a great weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:11:14):
Let's go. Let's go your Sunday. Waste no time. They
got engaged and said tomorrow we get married to the apple.
Speaker 6 (01:11:19):
Didn't fall far from the man I did.
Speaker 3 (01:11:22):
When you know, you know, well they've been together for
a long Yeah. Yeah, they've been together for a while.
We ain't gotta tell all your business.
Speaker 6 (01:11:28):
Keep it right here. Told quite a bit, all right.
Speaker 4 (01:11:33):
Coming up next, we put a wrap on this thing,
this hog's lot.
Speaker 1 (01:11:38):
Hawks Live presented by the Dining District at the Bellevue
Collection at Bellevue Square Center Court, live on air on
Seattle Sports.
Speaker 4 (01:11:49):
Welcome back to Hawks Live. I'm Michael Bumpers with Paul Moore.
The last segment of the day. We started with a thousand,
We got five hundred left. All right.
Speaker 3 (01:11:58):
You guys are the soldiers. We appreciate you guys.
Speaker 5 (01:12:01):
Yeah, they don't realize what they get there by the way,
getting gift cards that you go to every place here
and go shopping and you get the hotel. Safety for
you all. You are driving home listening right now. You
missed out, missed out, missed out? Then we're gonna do
the Oprah. Look underneath your seat, got some gifts?
Speaker 3 (01:12:17):
What about Ellen? Ellen? Does that too our dish? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:12:21):
I never watched You told me that I did. No,
It's like Judge Judy, Judge Judy.
Speaker 4 (01:12:27):
The people score just Joe mathis all that stuff all right?
The New York Football Giants. Man, we started the show
praising the enemy. You must praise the enemy because you
don't want to go in thinking that anything is guaranteed.
Speaker 3 (01:12:42):
Because this is the NFL.
Speaker 4 (01:12:44):
We've seen teams that aren't supposed to win win some
ball games. The Hawks have been on the other side.
You're supposed to win this ball game. A team comes
into looming field and they get you. So I respect
the opponent. Thibodau is a good ballplayer. Burns is a
good ballplayer. Dexter Lawrence is a good ball player and
gets sprinkling a whole bunch of other guys. When we're
(01:13:06):
starting to talk about the defense and we focus on
the defensive line, you're gonna give everyone behind.
Speaker 3 (01:13:10):
You a chance.
Speaker 4 (01:13:11):
So I think the key for the Seahawks is to
neutralize those guys. If you can keep Geno clean, we
see what he can do. You should be okay.
Speaker 6 (01:13:19):
Yeah, Tipota is a problem.
Speaker 5 (01:13:20):
I mean coming back to the Northwest to you know
that he'll be juiced for that.
Speaker 6 (01:13:26):
He's good.
Speaker 5 (01:13:27):
They have fifteen sacks, so they're getting after the quarterback yep,
which is impressive too, because you know.
Speaker 6 (01:13:32):
They they haven't had the they haven't had.
Speaker 5 (01:13:35):
The leads a lot where the forced teams to throw
a bunch, right, But they've been in every game. I mean,
you go, look, I mean twenty to fifteen, it's twenty
one to I mean it's been within one score and
three or two of their losses. I guess the first
loss was not good, but that was the first game
of the year. They're a solid football team. They just
don't have probably enough firepower to win in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 6 (01:13:58):
That's why it's narrative.
Speaker 5 (01:14:00):
That we get off to a good lead because we
don't have We're probably not gonna have everybody and cannot
get into a slugfest here where it's a one possession game.
Speaker 6 (01:14:09):
Can't do that. Can't do it, man.
Speaker 5 (01:14:10):
We just got to get double digit lead, force them
to do things they don't want.
Speaker 6 (01:14:14):
Put it on Jones.
Speaker 5 (01:14:16):
We're probably not gonna have their best wide receiver may
not have their best running back. This is a game
that to twelve should carry our backups to win.
Speaker 6 (01:14:24):
Special teams will be important.
Speaker 5 (01:14:26):
We got to play a great game, and we need
to win this thing going away because we got a
game four days later.
Speaker 6 (01:14:33):
Four days later good and that is a huge game.
Speaker 5 (01:14:37):
And if you want to make the dent and truly
believe you're a Super Bowl contendent team, which I think
we are when we're healthy, man, we got to get
it done.
Speaker 6 (01:14:45):
So this important game.
Speaker 4 (01:14:46):
How awesome is that that we genuinely think win healthy?
Speaker 3 (01:14:51):
This is a contending team. You look at all the
other teams in the NFC.
Speaker 4 (01:14:55):
The Vikings are playing good football, of course, the Detroit
Lions you got their best shot and still feel like
you could have beaten them. The Niners have been banged up.
You know that they're a good team. But I look
across the NFC. The Cowboys, who are supposed to be
good every year have been struggling. Philly doesn't look like
the team that they're they were supposed to be. You
look at the Bucks in Atlanta. Atlanta just beat the Bucks.
(01:15:16):
I mean, it's it's wide open. So it's it's nice
to talk about this team in a positive manner and
not feel like you're hoping. It's like, no, we've seen it.
When healthy, this team can play at a certain standard.
But I think a lot of it is contingent on
the offense. Granted, defense has to be healthy to your thing.
But the offense and Gino in that run game in
(01:15:37):
the past game getting going because I think for the
first time in a while, the strength of this defense
is the offense, but the but the defense isn't too
far behind the past few years of Russell's career here
the strength was the offense of the defense was just
a non factor.
Speaker 3 (01:15:51):
Yeah, I don't feel that way anymore now.
Speaker 6 (01:15:52):
I look.
Speaker 5 (01:15:53):
We go the first game of the year, a defense
plays unbelievable, I mean, just a ton of energy, and
you you see what it is capable of. The second game,
we don't stop the run well, but you know, we're
okay with that because I'm like, we weren't gonna lose
that game, and we gave up a couple of big runs,
but it wasn't like they were gashing us all day.
Speaker 2 (01:16:11):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (01:16:11):
Then the next game we just flat out dominate against Miami.
But I think this Detroit game was a good where
are we scheme wise? I think when we're healthy, our
defense is going to be a force against anybody. Our
offense is getting better every single week, our offensive lines
(01:16:32):
getting better every single week what Grub does. And it's
hard for a team to tee off on the Seahawks
in our passing game because the amount of things we do,
the way we bring guys on polls and then come
backside for protection, or they'll pull a guy and they'll
leave a defensive end the block that we're blocking down
with our defensive tackles and they freeze for a second thing, Well,
(01:16:53):
that's got to be a run. No, we're bringing somebody
in motion and we're gonna kick you out. But you
didn't get a full startup fel. So we're creating pockets
that are unconventional. We're not just lining five to offensive
linemen and say we're gonna block your four guys.
Speaker 6 (01:17:09):
We're gonna try to create time for genos.
Speaker 5 (01:17:11):
Now we do that at times, and we do it
with empty backfield, which I hate empty backfield, but we've
created this. Oh it's not just always quick game. You
can't sit on this quick game the whole time. And
because of that, now I've got four or five guys
that can all beat I got canine or three wide
received no offense. Those are mismatches across the board. So
(01:17:32):
the quick game works, and then the time you jump it,
we run a double move. I just really am been
impressed with Greb. I think we'll keep it up, and
I think we're starting to really gel on offense.
Speaker 4 (01:17:41):
I think obviously, I watched a lot of the Cowboys
versus Giants game, and something that I noticed with the
Cowboys is they don't do a lot of the pre
snap movement that the Seahawks do. It's a lot of
this straight up, this is who we this is what
we're in. We're gonna go right at you. So I
think that's gonna be a challenge for the New York
Giants as well. It's just seeing something different, man, and
(01:18:02):
and seeing a quarterback who was completely confident in the
scheme and what he's seeing.
Speaker 3 (01:18:07):
I watched that game and.
Speaker 4 (01:18:09):
Dak's Prescott does not look like the Dak Prescott that
was an MVP candidate what a year ago. Something's off
over there. So I'm excited for the challenge.
Speaker 3 (01:18:17):
Man. I think I think these guys are too and I'll.
Speaker 5 (01:18:21):
Throw one for you too. I think it's really important.
It was an NFL record. It might still be. We
were playing the Giants here. I think it was Eli
Manning eleven fault starts here. It really started this, unbelieve
it was an five. Look, we need some of that
man again. I think the twelves are back. The twelves
are back, and I think our defense can be electric.
(01:18:42):
We need the defense to be electric and do that.
The one thing we're missing we got I get some turnovers.
We're minus three in a turnover ratio that I mean,
that's just a bad stat man, to be three and
one minus three.
Speaker 6 (01:18:53):
We gotta flip that script.
Speaker 5 (01:18:54):
We gotta start being plus on turnovers ratio, and good
time to get that done.
Speaker 3 (01:18:59):
This there we go.
Speaker 4 (01:19:01):
Thank you guys for joining us today. Man Special thanks
to Derek Young and Ferreell Brown.
Speaker 3 (01:19:06):
For joining the show.
