You get the original and by guy right here? What's up?
B How you doing?
Speaker 4 (00:33):
I'm fifth best out here, so it's good. Good to
feeling good to be that fifth guy. Now, it's good
to be back here. Good crowd. I love the new setup,
the new stage, everything looks good. So it's always good
to be with you. Bump, that's what I'm talking.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
That's my guy right here. Receiver.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Love out here and you guys look great. Thanks for
showing up and hanging out. What is on a Thursday night?
You guys are shopping out here as well. If you're
not doing anything, come holler at us. We are right
here man Center Court. But man, these Seahawks they are
three in oh man, is it's a beautiful thing.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Now. A lot of haters are out there.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
They're gonna say, look, well they haven't played anybody, and
the quarterback situation, I don't care.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
I do not care. You win three games in the NFL,
it is hard to do, so you must respect it.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
A big task coming up this Monday night, Monday Night football.
The world is gonna see what the Hawks are made of.
But let's focus on what we saw last week. So
so far this year, all right, You're Hawks are number
one against the past, number two defense overall, number four
when it comes to points per game giving up third
down defense, they are fourth, allowing twenty six point one
(01:37):
percent man in their first when it comes to points allowed, Man,
when you look at this Seahawks defense, there are a
lot of questions. Is Mike McDonald gonna be the guy
who's gonna play linebacker? What's his defensive line gonna look like?
I think if there's anything we were certain about it
was the back end. At least we felt that Devin Witherspoon,
Reek Woling, Jay Love was gonna be on point. You
(01:58):
bring in Jenkins, Man, When you look at this defense, it's.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
What do you see be Well, first off, to all
to all the haters saying, you know three and oh
you haven't played anybody, Well, look.
Speaker 5 (02:06):
At these numbers right now.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
I mean you're you're one of the best defenses in
the league, and that's what you're supposed to do against
the teams that you would say, you know aren't aren't
as good as the others, right the worst team, you're
supposed to be one of the best.
Speaker 5 (02:16):
And that's exactly what they're doing.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Where we're gonna if we go back to last year,
it wasn't like that. You're you're seeing these teams that
you were probably better than, but you were still getting
beat by them.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
So so for all the haters, you know, you should
be happy.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
You should be happy that you're actually taking care of
business and the teams you're supposed to be so so
to get that out of my system. But as far
as this defense is concerned, I mean, we've always known
this secondary has been good, right, We've always known for
the last couple of years. We've always thought these guys
are talented. And now I think what's different is they
finally have a front end to help them. They have
(02:49):
that the front linemen that are that are performing amazing.
Speaker 5 (02:52):
I mean when you look at some of these numbers, some.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Of these numbers I pulled up here that were, you know,
their third in pressure rate, you know, but they only
blitzed nineteen percent of the time, which is one of
the bottom third in the league. So they're getting pressure
without having to send the extra guy. So that helps
your back end. That's more guys on the back end defending,
and and if they can keep doing that, the game
bomber receivers, you know. And so as much as we
hate to talk about the front end, you know, the
(03:15):
offensive lineman, thee oh, come on, I love the line,
you know, to me.
Speaker 5 (03:20):
I don't know what's going on up there. You know.
I like the touchdowns and that you are plays.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
But but as much as I don't like to talk
about it, it all starts up there, and that's the
most important thing. And when the front end gets it done,
it makes life so much easier on the back end.
Speaker 5 (03:34):
And that's what's going on now with all those pressures.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
And I think that's what we saw with the Dolphins now. Toua, Hey,
do what's best for you and your family and your career.
But as soon as Scylett Thompson was slotted as a starter,
I felt like this team was going to be easier
to beat. And a prime example of that was Gino
Smith is in the end zone. He tosses the fullball
(03:57):
outians on trying to avoid the side getting it's Zach
Scharboname Sharbonay ends up tipping the full ball up. They
get the ball inside the five. Four plays are three
plays have to kick it on kick a field goal,
and this defense does exactly what they're supposed to do
that right, There was a defining moment for me looking
at this defense.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
I don't care who you are, I can get eleven.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Fifteen year olds lined up inside the five, we might
be able to put the ball in the end zone.
So seeing them bow up against an NFL team in
that situation was huge for me.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
What did it mean for you?
Speaker 6 (04:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (04:31):
And they've done that time after time already this year.
Take go to the Denver game the first week. How
many times that defense was backed up and they just
allowed three points?
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Right?
Speaker 4 (04:40):
I mean and three point To allow three points at
a time like that, that's game changing, and that's momentum
changing as well, because now the other team so at
that stage, the Dolphins come off the field, they go, man,
we got had the big change, the big turnover, and
we couldn't capitalize on that. We got the minimum that
we were going to get on that. And so they
walk back to the bench and they and they're trying
to figure out what went wrong. The Seahawks are walking
back to the bench excited, happy, like, hey, that was
(05:02):
a game changing moment, the fact that we kept him out.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
And that's what this defense has done. They did it
all game.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
They held the Dolphins on fourth down late in the
game at the goal line. There was third down, big stop,
fourth down big stop, another third and one kind of
middle of the game that was a big stop. So
the defense in times that they need these huge stops
has continued to step up.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
All right, So the big question out there is a
quarterback play. The first week you see bow Knicks, all right, rookie,
welcome to the NFL. The second week you see Jacoby Brissett,
all right, veteran in the game, he's played a lot
of football, but not a guy that you're typically scared of.
And then the third week you see Skyler Thompson, a
guy who hasn't had a lot of starts in this league.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Now, you played Jared Golf. Remember what we thought about
Jared goff Ball four or five years ago. Everyone thought
he was washed up, he's done in LA. But he
goes to Detroit and he looks really good. What are
your concerns when it comes to facing a quarterback like
Jared Golf?
Speaker 4 (05:58):
Yeah, Jared Golf, Well, we saw him a lot when
he was with the Rams. First off, So the Seahawks,
I guess, I guess I'm aging myself now, right man?
You know because this is obviously McDonald wasn't with the Seahawks, right,
he's played with the Rams, but I'm major. I think
of golf with the Rams still, right, But and now
you know, he's kind of resurfaced or rejuvenated his career
going to Detroit, and what you see is he's surrounded
(06:19):
with these weapons. Am Monroe, Saint Brown, Jamison Williams has
come alive. He's their big playmaker. Now they have a
run game. The run game is you know what Jamir
gives and David Montgomery that won two punch is just
as good as anybody in the entire league. So Golf
surround and the offensive line, the offensive line is probably
their big thing right now. They're a little banged up
right now, but the offensive line around Golf, So I
(06:40):
think I think Golf hasn't.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Had the hot start yet this year that you expect.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
I think he's thrown three touchdowns and four interceptions if
I remember correctly. But you know what he can do
with those weapons especially, and he's gonna target him like crazy.
Amnoe Saint Brown might get fifteen to twenty targets in
a game, and he's gonna keep going at his playmakers.
And I think that's what Jared Goff does best, is
just keeps going to his playmaker playmakers over and over again.
(07:06):
And you know he's gonna put up some numbers. He's
gonna be tough. But to me, it is the first
true test. It is the first true test to this defense.
I think bo Nicks is gonna be a good quarterback
in this league. It was tough that he had to
see the Seahawks first first game of his career. He's
going to continue to get better all year. Jacoby Brissette,
we know what he is. That team's a run first.
He's not gonna throw the ball downfield. That's exactly what
(07:27):
we saw last week Skyler Thompson hadn't played over a year.
You know, he was inactive for seventeen games last season
and so he hadn't played. So this was kind of
his you know, back at it, get to the game
speed again. So we knew that was going.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
To be bad. So this is the first real test.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
So it'll be it'll be fun to see what the
DBS can do against a guy like Jared Goff.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Yeah, you got Jared Goff. You have Sam Laporter. We'll
see what his health is like once he gets going.
The thing that concerns me the most about the Detroit
Lions is that run game that you mentioned. You got
Montgomery who went for one hundred yards last game. You
have Gibbs who went for about over eight the rs
last game. There was a week week two against New
England where this run defense didn't look great. Now we'll
(08:06):
see who's healthy when it comes to Monday night football.
You got big Cat Williams who might be banged up.
You have Byron Murphy who might be banged ub any
concerns with that defensive line when it comes to stopping
this run.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Well, if they're all healthy, no, I don't think so
I think they've performed well so far.
Speaker 5 (08:22):
You saw the Dolphins.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Dolphins gash them a couple times in that game here
and there for you know, maybe a ten yard game,
but what they held strong. You know, after you get gashed,
then that was it. That was that was all you saw.
It wasn't a gash after gash that you saw you know,
Sharp and Age do against the Dolphins that last drive
of the game when they when he was able to
pound it in. So they've always made the adjustments and
that's what you've seen from this defense the entire years.
(08:45):
When something's not working, it's not the continued all game long,
it's not working, they make the changes. And this defensive line,
you put them up.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
You can put them up with anybody.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
When you name these you know with Byron Murphy and
Leonard Williams and Jonathan Hankin and Jared Reid, right, I
mean those guys in the middle and Draymond Jones now
he's kind of playing in the middle a little bit
too somewhat. So those are guys that can just stuff
the middle and it makes it makes life again so
much easier on the back end.
Speaker 5 (09:13):
And then you.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Know Tyrrel Dotson I thought had a phenomenal game as well,
filling in for those guys.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
So we talked about some challenges that this team might
face against the Detroit Lions. But there's something that I
love that we're gonna see. Dk Metcalf has an opportunity to.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
Be the first receiver in Seahawk history to go back
to back to back one hundred yard games. That is
crazy to me, the first ever do it fifteen seconds?
What do you think about that?
Speaker 4 (09:38):
I think DK is a different receiver this year, and
I don't know what it is. Is it grub, is
it just maturing or what? But he looks good. He
looks different, and you expect on hundred yards from HM.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Now, DK, come on fourteen, get it done against is
the Detroit Lions at defense? When we come back, we'll
get an opponent preview from Tim Twentyman from Detroit Lions
dot com.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
That is next right here on Hawk's Lock.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Hawks Live presented by the Dining District of the Bellevue
Collection at the Bellevue Square Center Cord Live on air
on Seattle Sports.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
You are listening to Hawks Lide presented by the Dining
District after Bellvy Collection, the show starts at seven every
Thursday right here on Seattle Sports seven to ten, broadcasting
live from Belvy Square Center Cording. Now we're joined by
Tim twenty Man. What's up?
Speaker 3 (10:23):
Tim?
Speaker 7 (10:24):
Hey? Bum Brian?
Speaker 8 (10:25):
How you guys doing?
Speaker 5 (10:26):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (10:26):
We are well? Man twenty men? Which death upon me?
Speaker 3 (10:31):
I don't know if our audience knows that, but it
just felt right, so I had to do it. Tim. Hey,
how you guys feeling about this matchup? Man?
Speaker 2 (10:38):
It's it feels like every year, at least the last
what two or three years, that this is a measuring
stick for US. Now, you guys have played probably better
opponents in the first three weeks of the season for US.
There was an opportunity last week to play against two
it he's down, So you take that win against Miami
as a win. But you know watching the Seahawks play
(10:59):
that this is going to be the true test. How
do you guys feeling about this one?
Speaker 4 (11:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (11:03):
I think it's the toughest challenge for both teams so
far this year. And look, they get a national stage,
and look, if you're Seattle, you can pump your chest
out a little bit. I think it's three straight years
that they've beaten Detroit. They've been some shootouts. They've been
really good offensively throwing the football, and so that's the
test for Detroit. You know, they remade the secondary because
they struggled with teams like Seattle last year. They struggled
(11:24):
down the stretch with passing attacks and big performances.
Speaker 7 (11:27):
From wide receivers.
Speaker 8 (11:28):
So they went out and traded for Carlton Davis, They
got to meet Robinson, they drafted Terry and Arnold. They
moved Brian Branch to safety, and so you know, it's
for games like this and teams like this, and so
I think it'll be a good measuring stick for that
defense in that secondary Detroit as well.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
Hey Tim, First off, I have to apologize about bump singing.
And I know it's laid out there like ten fifteen
out in Detroit and you had to put up with that.
I'm so sorry, but but yeah, all right, guy, it
wasn't true.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
I'm good. I'm good at karaoke night you are.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
That's a good point, hey, Tim.
Speaker 4 (12:02):
You know, going back to last season's NFC Championship appearance
and then now to this season, can you kind of
give me kind of a broad like, you know, where
have the Lions gotten better in your opinion from last
year's team, and where have they gotten worse from last year's.
Speaker 8 (12:16):
Yeah, yeah, well, you know I talked about the secondary
off the top. That was really, you know, the big
goal for for giem Brad Holmes this offseason. You know,
Detroit was twenty seventh passing last year. They allowed the
most twenty plus yard passes. They had to get better there,
so they did and you know, to help that, as
you guys know, good pass events in this league is
(12:37):
a marriage between your rush and your cover. We talked
about what additions they made in the secondary, but you
know they also got Marcus Davenport. Unfortunately they lose him
for the entire rest of the season from last year.
But they also got DJ Reader and that was a
really you know, undervalued free agent signing for this team
because you put him next to Alee McNeil, and now
(12:58):
inside you've got two guys that are ten by Pro
football focus against the run, but can give you a
little push too. And then we've all seen what Aidan's doing,
so you push that center right, you don't allow that
quarterback to step up. And now you've got a guy
like Aiden Hudgins who's playing his best football on the edge.
And you know, between that and what they've done in
the secondary, that's what they're really better. You know, where
did they get worse? It's really hard to say it
(13:20):
with this football team because you look at them offensively,
they still got one of the best offensive lines in football.
Jamis and Williams now emerged as a threat at the
receiver corps. You still have Aman rof with Saint Brown,
You've got a po bowler in Sam Laporte. I think,
you know, the one thing we've noticed from the first
three weeks is the pass game has been a little
bit off. You know, some of the numbers are there,
(13:40):
but you know, this is a team that's been really
good in the red zone and they're twenty eighth in
the league in red zone. They were one of seven
and they're lost to Tampa Bay. It's really why they lost.
So you know, they're much better defensively than what the
Seahawks has seen the last few years, and you know,
they've got all the weapons offensively, I think they're still
trying to figure it out a little bit in the past,
and that would be one area where they certainly have
(14:02):
to get better moving forward and certainly Monday night because
I expect Seattle'll be able to score in football.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Tim, I respect Jared Goff to the utmost. Man.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
I think he found a second life over there with
the Detroit Lions.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
What's the feeling like with him?
Speaker 2 (14:16):
Because there was that new car smell right, it feels good.
And then you know, I bought a truck like two
or three years ago. I'm already ready for a new
one because I see these other trucks driving around and
I want one of those. Like, what's it like with
Jared goff Man? Is he still being appreciated over there?
Are their higher expectations. What is it like for Jared
Goff in Detroit?
Speaker 8 (14:34):
Well, certainly there's higher expectations. There's higher expectations for everybody
when you go to the NFC Championship game and then
you feel like a football team that you got better.
Now you're talking super Bowl, And that's been the conversation
this offseason in Detroit, that that's the expectation, you know
with Jared. You know, we were still getting Jared Goff
chants from Wayans fans in Arizona. You guys got to remember,
this is a football team that hadn't won a division
(14:54):
title in thirty years, They didn't want to playoff in
thirty years, and Jared Golf gave him that. Man, he
gave him a heck of a run last season, and
Detroit fans aren't going to forget that after all the
years that they didn't have stuff like that. So, you know, look,
Jared's I don't think played his best football to start.
You look at passing around the league, it's a little
bit down. We always talk about September football. With all
these guys not playing in the preseason. You know, it
(15:16):
takes a little bit of time to kind of catch
their stride. But Detroit is certainly the excuse me. Jared
Goff is certainly the guy in Detroit. He signed obviously
the massive contract in the offseason. But he fits this
football team, right. It's a greedy football team. You talk
about a guy who's had to go through some adversity
that certainly fits this city and so in this football team.
And you know, now they're on the other side of
(15:36):
it and they think Jared Golf could take him to
the prom slams.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
Hey, Tim, I know you guys are kind of banged
up there on the defensive side. You know, you don't
have Derek Barnes, you know, Marcus Davenport anymore. But I
look at your roster and I still see a guy
there named Aiden Hutchinson. And he no matter who you
don't have, when you see that Detroit has that guy,
you get a little worried. Talk to me about him
and the importance to this defense, sence, this team and
(16:01):
what he brings to the table.
Speaker 8 (16:02):
Yeah, he brings everything. You know, I put him up
there in the you know TJ category. I think he's
that kind of player now in his third season, He's
done everything right. He's got a motor that doesn't quit,
all the physical tools, the toolbox. You know, he's just
coming into his own and it's scary to think. I mean,
he's the twenty four year old guy who's got six
and a half sacks and three games and you know,
(16:26):
losing Marcus Davin for it. I think it's going to
be interesting to watch moving forward because you know, he
provided a lot. You know, he had four quarterback hits
in a sack the first week, then got hurt and
unfortunately got hurt again. You know, they talk about squeezing
the can on that defensive line right when you have
DJ Reader and Lead mcneilup the middle, hutch on the
other side. So can they get something else from somebody
(16:47):
else over there, whether it's Levi owns Rique, whether it's
Josh Pascal, James Houston, because I think what you're going
to see now if they don't is, you know, Aiden's
not going to see a single coverage. I know you
guys got some tackle issues there. Stone might play, you know,
he did pretty good last year, but he's going to
need help. And I think that's going to be the
formula is teams are going to put you guys over there,
(17:08):
They're gonna chip the running back, They're going to put
all their focus on Hutchinson. And I think it's really
up for those guys on the other side to make
sure that teams don't do that because the lak Hutchinson
is an elite player now and if you try to
just lock him one on one, he's gonna beat you.
And he's that type of rusher now, he's that level.
And so it'll be interesting to see starting Monday, you
(17:30):
know what kind of production you get from the other side,
because that could start to affect eight.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Tim We know the NFL is full of egos, Like
you're supposed to have an ego, or you wouldn't have
made it this far in your career. So I look
at that running back room you guys have over there
with Montgomery and with Gibbs, and would imagine that every
those two guys want to touch the ball as much
as possible. But if they're smart, they realize that, look,
if I can, you know, share the touches with with
(17:56):
this guy and the next.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
Guy, then my career extend a little bit.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
What's the vibe with that room in those two when
it comes to sharing the workload.
Speaker 8 (18:06):
Yeah, they're really closed. It's big brother little brother type
deal in that room, and they both realize that. I mean,
you just have to go back to Week one and
look at what David Montgomery did in overtime against the
La Rams, Right, you ran six times in overtime for
sixty yards. They ran it right down their throat and
won the game at overtime. You don't do that if
you've got twenty twenty five carries before that. You do
(18:27):
that because you're fresh, you know, because you've got another
guy that takes some of the load and can make
big plays. And so it's a perfect combo. You know,
you're running behind one of the best offensive lines of football,
and then you've got a guy that is really tough
to tackle in Montgomery always gets the extra yards. Fits
the physicality right can also make you know, some big
(18:48):
plays as well. But then now you go to those
outside runs and you're a defender. You've got to catch
those angles or Jamier Dibbs is gone. You saw what
you can do in the passing game. You saw the
trick play later of the twenty yard touchdown last week
in Arizona. That's what you hear Gibbs brings. And so
they're a perfect compliment to each other. And you're right there.
Ego lists, ego lists, excuse me. You know they know
(19:09):
that this is extending them for games, it's extending their careers,
like you mentioned. And you can have two thousand yard
backs in the same season. We've seen it before and
that's the goal for those two. And you know, if
they keep running the way they are, it's certainly attainable.
Speaker 4 (19:24):
Hey, you're sitting here with two receivers, so I can't
let you go without asking you about the whiteouts. And
we all know what am and el Saint Brown brings
to you guys, you know all the targets and everything,
how good he is. But there's a guy that's really
emerged and that's Jameson Williams. The first couple of games.
I mean, he was your main playmaker. What have you
seen from him so far? And has he surprised you.
Speaker 5 (19:43):
A little bit?
Speaker 8 (19:45):
You know, I wouldn't say surprised because we've seen it
really all the way back to OTA's and certainly saw
in training camp. And look as a young man, that's
you know, grown up a little bit. And he would
admit that too. Obviously, had the red shirt year, his
his rookie season because of the ACL tear at Alabama
was suspended the first four games. Had to mature, had
to grow up a little bit, had to become a
(20:05):
professional football player. And credit to him, he did that
this offseason and what he gives this line's offense is
something they didn't have consistently when he wasn't taking sixty
seventy eighty percent of the snaps, you know, his first
two years, and that's a deep threat. Look, you can
count on one hand the guys in this league. They're
as fast as Jamison Williams.
Speaker 7 (20:25):
I mean that that list is worthy.
Speaker 8 (20:27):
Tyreek Hill, He's in that category. And so now you've
got all these weapons like Sam Laporta, like a not
I'm on Rossaint Brown across the middle of the field.
And now you've got a four to two guy that
can stretch it and make plays. And so what do
you do as a defense? Who are you gonna guard
in the middlefield? Who you're gonna double? You're not gonna
double them on ross An Brown? Okay, well he'll catch
ten balls. You're gonna single cover Jamison Williams. Okay, we'll
(20:50):
take that shot. Something we haven't had consistently. And so
it just brings that deep dangerous element. I think he
opens up, you know, catches for other guys in the
middle field because of his threat. And then if you
decide to get lazy, if you decide to you know,
attack something else and you leave him one on one,
good luck having a safety or cornerback that can run
with him. And so that's the threat that he gives
(21:14):
this offense, and it just makes it so much more
dangerous than what we've even seen the last couple of
years when they were top five offense in this league.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
He is Tim twenty men from Detroit Lions dot Com.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
Man, we appreciate talking to you. It seems like every
year now that we talked to you, so uh, let's
do it again next year. Man, I appreciate your time.
Speaker 8 (21:32):
Maybe maybe maybe we'll get another time in the playoffs
here and that'll be fun.
Speaker 7 (21:35):
For both cities.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
So I like that. I like that, Tim. Good vibes,
playoff vibes for the Seahawks. Man, appreciate you.
Speaker 8 (21:43):
Detroit NFC Championship game. Let's let's make it happen.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
Let's go. You heard it here first, Tim, let us know.
Appreciate you Tim.
Speaker 7 (21:50):
All right, guys any time, All right, Hey.

That is next right here on Hawk's Lot.

Speaker 3 (22:30):
Helvy Square Center, card.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
On Michael Bumbas with Brian Waltz has been and now
we are joined by one of my favorite players, and Drake.
I'm not even gashing you what like, you're one of
my favorite players, man, because I love the journey that
you've been on and see you make plays. We're joined
now by Drake Thomas Man, Drake, how you doing.
Speaker 7 (22:48):
I'm good. I really appreciate that, and I appreciate you
guys having me on.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
Yeah, no problem, man, thanks for joining us on a Thursday.
I know you guys got a lot to do preparing
for a Monday night football game.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
I want to take you back to a play.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
So during the game, I'm in the press box, and
the etiquette in the press box is that you're supposed.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
To be quiet, right Obviously, I worked for the Seahawks.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
When big plays are made, you got to be quiet
and just kind of internalize what's going down. When I
saw you light up the running back on that screen,
I had to grab somebody next to me and contain
my excitement.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
Man, Take me through that play.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
Did you was that something you guys saw on film
that you felt that was going to happen?
Speaker 3 (23:26):
Did you just read or react to what happened there?
Speaker 7 (23:30):
We knew their tight end number nine was a guy
they wanted to tight end, and he kind of came
out of the backfield chips and it was like a
chip screen. We knew he was someone that they wanted
to get to get the ball to when he was
in the game, you know, just recognizing that playing my
zone coverage and having vision back on the quarterback. After that,
(23:50):
it was really just it was just the read and
react type of thing. I saw it and I just
reacted fast and went and got it.
Speaker 4 (23:58):
Yeah, that was that was fun to watch, Drake. Thanks
for joining us. You know, I was going through the roster.
I was looking at the linebackers. I was looking at
the inside linebackers, and I think you're now the the
the longest tenured Seahawks on the roster for the linebackers,
you know, because last year you you were played with
guys like Bobby Wagner, Jordan Brooks. They're they're gone now,
so I think you might be it. I mean, how
(24:20):
How is that room dynamic?
Speaker 5 (24:22):
Now? What have you seen?
Speaker 3 (24:23):
You know?
Speaker 4 (24:23):
How how has it changed for you? How was it
playing with Bobby last year? Is he how did you
did you? Were you able to learn from him a
little bit and all that? How's how's the room?
Speaker 7 (24:33):
Going back to last year with Bobby and JB Jordan Brooks,
that was a great experience for me. I mean I
learned so much. Uh. They were great to me. Whatever
I needed, whatever information I was seeking out, they were
always there and you know, willing to give me, you know,
whatever I was looking for. And I really appreciate them.
(24:54):
And I can't take them enough for what they did
for me while I was there and they were that
but and been going on to this year. I mean
it's the same type of Bob in the room. Really
great dudes. You know, we we love each other, We
work together, We talked to each other about you know,
football things, non football thing. Is a pretty tight knit
(25:16):
group and I'm really enjoying spending the time that I
am with them. Right now, I'm playing on the field
with them.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
What's it like playing with a young linebacker in Tyree's
and I We're gonna talk to him later tonight.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
But it's when I played.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
I was an undrafted guy, and like me, the lower
drafted guys and the undrafted guys we kind of stuck together.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
It's like, Okay, we know these these starters are.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
Gonna get these reps, but when we get in we
gotta make some noise. And we shared a different kind
of bond. Is that the similar bond that you have
with Tyree's Knight?
Speaker 7 (25:50):
For sure? Me and tea night, we were in together
during practice and taking a lot of reps together, and we're,
you know, constantly talking about what's going on if we're
not out there taking mental reps, just going through the
the plays in our head or just watching and pointing
out different things. So means T and I are definitely
(26:10):
kind of on that same wave length that you were
just talking about, and kind of getting closer, you know,
as the year goes on and it's just a lot
of fun.
Speaker 4 (26:19):
Hey Drake, did I hear this right? Do you have
a brother that's a receiver for the Vikings? Is that correct?
Speaker 7 (26:25):
I do? Yeah, you do?
Speaker 5 (26:26):
Is there a little rivalry going on with this?
Speaker 7 (26:28):
Then? What?
Speaker 5 (26:29):
How?
Speaker 7 (26:29):
What?
Speaker 4 (26:30):
How often do you talk to them throughout the week.
I'm curious and what are you talking about? The Vikings
are on a role themselves. What's that banter?
Speaker 7 (26:36):
Like, I wouldn't say it's even banter right now. It's
just you know, we've probably talked twice a week, honestly,
and everything's so busy right now, it's hard to it's
hard to keep up with everybody. But we definitely talk
multiple times a week, and it's honestly just wishing each
other the best. It's no banter right now, or like, honestly,
(26:59):
competition when it comes Vikings week, obviously that's a little different,
but right now it's just it's all love.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
I was gonna say once y'all square up. It might
be a little different, but it's ali good right now.
Who's older? Is it you or your brother?
Speaker 7 (27:14):
He's older than me.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
He's older than you, all right, So you're showing up
a little bit of respect of it. I appreciate that. Man.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
Hey, talk to me about the Mike McDonald defense, Like
we keep hearing about this last year. The Seahawks go
to Baltimore and that defense just does whatever they want,
right and now we're trying we're starting to see some
some of the things that he did in Baltimore what
makes this defense so special for the average fan who
doesn't really know the x's and o's the way that you.
Speaker 7 (27:42):
Do, I would say just getting guys in the right
position to be effective in the game, you know, based
off what they're good at. I think he really utilizes
personnel well. And I think that's the game plan and
attacking teams and what they're doing. It's just it's on
another level and it's, you know, so much fun to play,
(28:06):
and you know, it's it's a lot of fun. Hey.
Speaker 4 (28:10):
And then from defense to special teams. There's the big
talk of the NFL this year is the new kickoff rules.
And I know you've you've been on both. You've been
on last year's kickoff version and then you've been on
this year's version of the kickoff. What are your thoughts
on the changes so far? And I mean, do you
like it?
Speaker 7 (28:24):
And I'm different, I wouldn't say I have a strong
opinion about it. Yet I feel like everybody's still trying
to fill it out, feel the you know, the best
ways to go about things, different techniques and strategies and whatnot.
So I feel like it's still it's still in progress.
(28:45):
You know, we're We're still trying to figure it out,
and uh, I can't answer if I like it better
or worse yet.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Hey, Dreg, tell me about this Detroit Lions offense.
Speaker 3 (28:54):
My film study says at least.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
To start the game, they're going to try to pack
it in, bringing an extra offense lineman out there, a
couple of tight ends. We'll see if Laporte is healthy
or not, and try to make it a real physical game.
What do you see when you look at film on
the on the Detroit Lions.
Speaker 7 (29:11):
Yeah, I mean that's the identity, uh, that they that
they take just being a physical, high effort, smash mouths
football team, and you see it on film too. And
then along with that they have, you know, dynamic playmakers
as well. I mean they have great players, two really
good backs, multiple receivers that are big play guys, and
(29:35):
like I said, that they take the identity that they
want to be a smash mouth football team and run
the ball.
Speaker 4 (29:41):
Hey Drake, Uh, you know going through your journey from
NC State undrafted to the Raiders and then the Seahawks
picked you up and then then you get injured. Uh,
just tell us kind of the whole process in that
journey what you went through there and then what it's
like now to kind of recover fed injury and be
on the field as a huge special teamer and line acker.
Speaker 7 (30:03):
I mean, the whole journey itself, I would say, is
a blessing, the highs the lows. You know, I really
leaned on my faith a lot through a lot of
those hard times, whether it was being waved or through
my injury the recovery process, I leaned on my faith
a lot. And you know, I'm thankful for it all
(30:24):
because you know, everything that I went through, everything that
I've gone through, anything that I will go through, you know,
it's all it's all meant for good in the end.
I know the support, the purpose of it all is
to make me stronger and better in the end. And
that's that's the approach that I took through it all.
Any any struggle, any hard time, I knew that in
the end or when I come out of it, I
(30:47):
was I was going to be better from it.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
That's awesome, man. What's it? What's Drake like off the field?
Speaker 3 (30:54):
Like? What do you what do you like to do?
Speaker 2 (30:55):
You're from North Carolina, went to college out there, now
you're out west here in the north West. What do
you do when when you're not studying film and preparing
for the opponent?
Speaker 7 (31:07):
Be completely honest, I don't do I don't do much
outside of football. I mean, I got a dog that
he's back home. I couldn't get him out of here.
I don't have much going on. It's a lot of football.
It's a lot of recovery, especially during this time of
the year. So I couldn't sit here and tell you
(31:29):
that I actually had like a certain hobby that I
really like to go do outside of just playing football.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
To be honest, I love that he goes Look, I
do football. That's what I do. And we appreciate doing
what you do.
Speaker 6 (31:42):
Man.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
It's always fun seeing you out there.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
You play with a passion that I enjoy and you
have great instincts.
Speaker 7 (31:47):
Man.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
And good luck on Monday against the Lions.
Speaker 7 (31:51):
I really appreciate it, really appreciate you guys having me
on too.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
No problem, man, Drake Thomas, Man, I'm feeling Drake's vibe.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Man, I'm feeling it all right.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
We'll come back. We'll go around the NFL. That is
next right here on Hawks Live.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
Hawkss Live, presented by the Dining District of the Bellevue
Collection at Bellevue Square Center Court, Live on air on
Seattle Sports.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
This is Hawks Live every Thursday right here at seven
o'clock on Seattle Sports seventy ten on Michael Bumpins with
my guy Brian Walters. It is now time to go
around the NFL. What is going down? I'll let you
know right now. Cowboys seventeen, Giants fifteen. Raise your hand
if you think if the Cowboys lose, Mike McCarthy's fired, right,
(32:40):
Something gotta happen with the Cowboys. He spending all that
day money and you can't.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
Beat the Giants. Come on, now, what's going on?
Speaker 2 (32:46):
But that's what's going on right now in in the
NFL on Thursday night football? Amazon Prime all right, another question,
how many of y'all share your Amazon Prime account?
Speaker 9 (32:55):
Well?
Speaker 3 (32:56):
Relatives?
Speaker 2 (32:57):
Here you go, Netflix and all that too. Okay, we're
being honest. I'm glad we got an honest relationship here
all right at Cinacort.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
But let's let's go around the NFL. Be biggest surprise
to me, It is surprising, it isn't. I thought Sam Darnold.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
Was gonna go out there involve this year, and people
called me crazy, Like, what are you talking about? And
he's played for the Jets and for the Panthers that
nothing has happened, And I go, look, he hasn't had
the talent that the Vikings have surrounded by him. So
I'm I'm surprised by that, but I'm not. At the
same time, what surprises you?
Speaker 4 (33:32):
No, that's that doesn't surprise me at all. Just throw
it up to Justin Jefferson and you know you're probably
gonna complete half your passes at least. That's that's my thoughts.
If I was quarterback, I'd want to go throw it
to him. That's one hundred percent for sure. But uh,
what else is surprising is Andy Dalton with the Panthers.
I mean, I thought the Panthers, you know you could
I was. I was more on the side of Bryce Young.
(33:55):
Isn't that bad? Like I think it's a system thing
and maybe people around it. But now than any Dalton
comes in and he does this thing there and the
Panthers get their first win the week after they bench
Bryce Young. Now I'm starting to worry about Bryce Young
a little bit. That I wasn't on that train until
I just I saw it happen in real.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
I feel so bad for Bryce young.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
I felt like he was this delta bad hand. The
kid or the young man obviously is talented, but you
need to be put in a good situation. Going back
to Sam Darnold, right, perfect example. He comes into the league.
He can throw the football, he's an alright quarterback, but
you need to be surrounded by talent. All right, let's
talk about our ex. Okay, you guys ready to talk
about our ex. Okay, let's do it. Russell Wilson, all right.
(34:37):
I wish nothing but the best for my guy, Russell Wilson,
But he is our ex and he's over there getting
beat out by a younger, probably more physically talented young
man than when he had calf injuries. I tap, my boy,
I go, that's just turning thirty. Once you turn thirty, man,
things start to happen to your body. And that's what's
happening with Russell Wilson. So now Justin feels is the
(35:00):
over there. What do you see for the future in Pittsburgh.
Do you think there's a scenario where Russell comes back
and takes over or do you think that is Justin
Field's show for the rest of the year.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
I think that this actually happened earlier than I thought
it would happen. I thought maybe week four, week five,
Justin Fields might get the opportunity to take over for Russ.
But I don't see the Steelers looking back at all.
I think, barring an injury, injury will get Russ in there.
But when you're winning, you're not changing anything. And unfortunately,
I'm kind of on the other end of it. I
(35:31):
don't think that the wins are a quarterback stat I
think there's a lot more going on in Pittsburgh right
now than Justin Field's winning games for the Pittsburgh That
defense has been playing outstanding and all that. But that's
the beauty of being a quarterback. I'm just jealous. I
never was one, because you get all the glory you could.
You could, you know, throw four interceptions in a game
and win the game by three because your defense, you know,
(35:52):
made all the stops and you still.
Speaker 5 (35:53):
Get the win and you still get the credit for
that win.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
But that's real. We're receivers.
Speaker 5 (35:58):
Receivers.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
We can drop a big a big pass, but as
long as you score the winning touchdown.
Speaker 5 (36:03):
We're good. You forget about that drop pass real quick.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
It never happened. It never happened. Let's keep going around
the NFL.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Man, you got Will Levis over there with the Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
He is struggling.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
Now they drafted Milik Willis a year before they drafted
uh Levis.
Speaker 3 (36:18):
Now Willis is over.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
With the Green Bay Packers got them to two and one.
Another example of just having to be in the right situation.
What do you make of that, the Levis and Milick
Willis situation.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
I thought that the Titans, we're in a weird situation.
But all they had like three quarterbacks on their roster
day because they had Tannehill as well, So they had Tannehill, Tannehill, Levis,
and Milik Willis. Right, and when you have those three guys,
I don't I just think that's a losing situation because
you're not really giving confidence to either one, to anyone,
and so someone's gonna fall. But I mean, good for
(36:51):
Milik Willis going to Green Bay taking you know, he's
back up to Jordan Love. Jordan Love goes down, Milik
Willis comes in and has you know, he threw for
two touchdowns, ran for one and did exactly what you're
supposed to do in that situation. He was ready for it,
and the Titans are sitting there going, you know, man,
we we we chose the mayonnaise guy. You know, the
(37:11):
guy he's spooning mayo out of the out of the jar.
But nothing wrong with mayonnaise. I like mayonnaise sometimes maybe
on a sandwich. But uh but but yeah, I don't know.
I mean, Malik Willis had to that had to have
been one of the best days of his life. Yeah,
going in and just outperforming the guy that you know
that took your spot, I guess per se and and
he went in and he's feeling good right now.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
All right, let's let's let's go down the schedule for
this week.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
Okay, I got it right here in front of us,
and there are some games that I'm looking forward to
see him. A game that's underrated, but I think people
should pay attention to is Jacksonville Jaguars against the Houston Texans,
because if the Jacksonville Jaguars lose this game and get dominated,
I'm telling you, Doug Peterson, who's from the state of Washington,
might be kicked out of there. I'm also looking at
(37:58):
Philly versus Tampa. Tampa came out Baker Mayfield had a
great year last year. They give them his money, and
now they seem like they've hit a wall a little
bit right there. Two and one for the year, but
you're going up against the Philadelphia Eagles who are trying
to figure some things out. Those are two games that
stick out to me just at first glance.
Speaker 3 (38:16):
Be with six out two.
Speaker 4 (38:17):
You know, I was just in Jacksonville, Florida this last weekend.
I used to play for the Jaguars, and so I
still have a place down there and I go occasionally,
and they've already given up on this squad.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
All the fans everyone, they are, oh, they are done
with them.
Speaker 4 (38:30):
They they have the games are too hot to go
to for them to perform like that. Like it's it's
hot down there. You go sit in that stadium. That
stadium has no shade in it, and those the sun
just beats down on all the fans and they want
to see.
Speaker 5 (38:42):
A good product and there is not a good product
right now. But rumor has it it'll.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
Be the offensive coordinator that goes before really before Doug
Peterson leaves.
Speaker 5 (38:51):
But that's a that's a tough situation.
Speaker 4 (38:54):
One of the games that'll be curious is Cincinnati Carolina
to two teams just well, Carolina coming off the first
winning the season. Bengals haven't got a their win. That's
probably the most shocking thing to me so far this season.
The Bengals are zero and three because you look at
Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and all that, and they
can't win. They can't win right now and they're not performing.
And that's trouble because they've already paid Burrow. You know
(39:16):
that that's something that's they can't have back, and they're
trying to work something out with Jamar Chase. But now
you almost see rumors of maybe them trading Jamar Chase
and just totally starting another rebuild. So, uh, the Bengals,
I still believe they can get back on track and
Panthers or the Panthers will probably be a good team
to to get back on track with. But now, I
mean the Panthers are kind of hot, high on life.
(39:37):
Dave Kanalis got his first win as a head coach,
So who knows what happens with that game?
Speaker 3 (39:41):
All right? I need crowd participation.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
Who's playing the best at the quarterback position right now
in the NFL? Josh Shallon, like, you know, we got
Josh Shallen. I think it's Josh Allen. I'm looking at
that game. You got the Buffalo Bills against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens are struggling this year. You got to see
if they can bounce back. I saw when they picked
(40:05):
up Derrick Henry. We thought they were gonna be good
to go. But they're human, man, They're human. So I'm
looking at Josh Allen and the Baltimore Ravens and saying,
let's see what happens there. But it all comes down
on Monday night. Let's see what the Seahawks do against
the Lions. All Right, you guys, don't go anywhere, because
when we come back, we got a rookie tyres Knight
joining us live in person.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
That is next right here on Hawk's Love.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
Hawks Live presented by the Dining District at the Bellevue
Collection at Bellevue Squares Center Court, every Thursday from seven
to nine, live on air on Seattle Sports Now. If
you're your host, Michael Buffis Paul Moyer.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
Welcome back to Hawk's Live, presented by the Dining District
after Bellevue Collection, every Thursday at seven o'clock right here
on Seattle Sports seven ten on Michael Baumas we've got
Brian waltss filling in for Paul Boyer aka Paul Moyer.
So now my guy right here, Man, let's focus on
these Seahawks for a little bit. Man, tyres Night is
(41:04):
gonna join us soon. He's on his way. But in
the meantime we'll talk a little more football, and I
want to focus on Geno Smith. I was watching Sports
Center this morning, like I do every morning. A's like
getting ready for my dame, and Dan Orlowski has his
top five quarterbacks list and I go, there's no way
Geno Smith is gonna get some love on that list.
He ends up cracking cracking the list at five or four,
(41:26):
and I was I felt like a proud uncle. I go,
look at my guy out there, finally getting the love
that he deserves. Man, when you look at Geno Smith,
his play this year and his importance to the team.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
With sticks out to you.
Speaker 5 (41:37):
Yeah, finally getting the love he deserves.
Speaker 4 (41:39):
I mean we've said this for a couple of years,
that he's the guy and he can get the job done.
You know what sticks out to me the most about
Geno is he's just Geno. I mean, he just he
takes care of the ball. And that being said, I
know a couple of tip passes this last game, but
it's not like they're bad decisions. You know, it's not
like he's making a bad reading and throwing it straight
to the DV.
Speaker 5 (41:58):
You know, something had to happen.
Speaker 4 (42:00):
But Gino, the way he moves in that pocket is
he does it better than anybody in the league in
my opinion. And one of the plays this last game,
he threw to Tyler Lockett over the middle. You know,
probably a ten yard pass, but he threw it as
he was getting hit and he kind of weaved and
Tyler Lockett hadn't even crossed the linebackers yet and he
threw it to an open spot, and so he was
(42:21):
He's showing a lot of anticipation to where he's throwing
a lot of these young quarterbacks in the league, they're
throwing when guys are open.
Speaker 5 (42:26):
Gino's not. Gino's throwing before guys are open.
Speaker 4 (42:28):
And that's what makes good quarterbacks great is when you
can anticipate where the receiver is going to be and
throw it before he becomes open.
Speaker 5 (42:35):
And you're seeing that a lot from him this season.
Speaker 2 (42:38):
It also helps him when you have a sixty three
twenty five pound receiver that you can just toss it
up to. But listen, I mean a quarterback is only
as good as his protection and his receivers.
Speaker 3 (42:52):
Besides DK, who.
Speaker 2 (42:53):
We're hoping goes for a third trade hundred yard game,
which would be the first time in franchise history, which
blows my mind, who else sticks out to you when
it comes to Gino and his ability.
Speaker 3 (43:04):
To toss the ball down the field to make these plays.
Speaker 4 (43:06):
Well, what I've noticed the past few weeks, it's it's
been someone new every week, and that's been been something fun.
Speaker 7 (43:11):
You know.
Speaker 4 (43:11):
The first week we saw it was Tyler Lockett. He
stepped up where like, you know, where's Tyler been? All
all training camp and all that, we haven't heard his name?
And then he goes, hey remember me, guys. So you know,
he has six catches or something against the Broncos. Then
you have js N and d K just going off
against Why am I blanking who?
Speaker 5 (43:27):
They played?
Speaker 4 (43:27):
The second Dolphins, the Dolphs no New England against the
Patriots and so and then those two go off, and
then this third game against the Dolphins. You know who
I really loved we saw step up was no a fan? Yeah,
because we saw a few a couple of weeks ago
against the Patriots. I don't know why I can't remember Patriots,
but uh, you know, Noah had a couple of drops,
you know why, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (43:48):
I know, I try. I try to forget about the Patriots. Hey,
the bad memories back when I played.
Speaker 4 (43:54):
Uh, but Noah had a couple of drops that were
there were there were big drops in that game, and
he came back and secured everything and the whole wide
receiving corps. You know, they had five drops a week
ago against the Patriots. And when you can come back
and no drops last week, it's pretty impressive to do that.
And that just totally fulfills or just puts more confidence
in Geno to trust you.
Speaker 2 (44:14):
Yeah, no offense had like two or three drops, and
then last week he had six targets, six receptions.
Speaker 3 (44:21):
That is the.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
Definition of a pro being able to wash that negativity,
show up and do your job and come through clutch.
Last week, we saw Zach Sharbonnat rush the ball what
for ninety one yards and two touchdowns, a career high
for that young man. And it was because kin Walker
wasn't available. It sounds like kN Walker might be available.
(44:42):
But what does that those extra reps do for a
guy like Zach Sharbonay knowing that kN Walker will be back,
but if need be, you can hand the football off
to him.
Speaker 3 (44:52):
He can make plays. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (44:54):
I loved how Sharboney ran. We hadn't seen that from him.
I don't think he's really had that opportunity. You know,
you send him in there every time Kenneth Walker is tired,
and you know on a third down play he may
get a few carries a game in that regard, and
it's hard to as an athlete, you'll you'll know this bump.
No excuses for him, right, I get it, it's your
job all that, but it's it's tough to get in
that zone right when you don't know exactly when you're
(45:15):
getting in and when your name's going to be called,
and you're sitting there on the sideline like am I going?
Speaker 5 (45:19):
Am I not?
Speaker 4 (45:20):
But what you saw is Charbonae get in a rhythm
and you saw him just I mean, he he had
his vision.
Speaker 5 (45:26):
That game was incredible.
Speaker 4 (45:27):
The offensive line was doing a great job opening some holes,
but a couple plays, some of his cutback, some of
his He had a one play where he kind of
had a double double slide cut where he kind of
went left left and and it hit the edge and uh,
it just he showed an explosiveness that I hadn't really
seen from him because he's known as that power guy.
He's you know, he's a guy that's gonna run you over. Yeah,
that's kind of what we think of him. But you
(45:47):
saw him kind of hit the edge and hit some
corners and outrun some people, which was fun to see
from him.
Speaker 5 (45:52):
And it's it's it's nice to have that luxury.
Speaker 4 (45:55):
To know if Kenneth Walker, you know, goes down or
needs that break, you have a guy like that who
can fill in.
Speaker 5 (46:00):
There was a.
Speaker 2 (46:00):
Drive where the Seahawks went eleven plays ninety eight yards.
Zach Sharbney had forty two rushing yards on that drive.
Speaker 3 (46:07):
That just shows the type of running back he is.
Speaker 2 (46:09):
He's the guy that needs the reps, find his groove,
you know, get his back up off the wall, find
the dance floor, start two stepping a little bit. That's
who Zach Sharbiney is. So I'm still waiting for that.
Speaker 3 (46:22):
We talked about Noah fan of him being having a
six target, six receptions, still waiting for an explosive game
from a tight end.
Speaker 2 (46:30):
The last game I remember being explosive from a tight
end came from Uncle will Disley.
Speaker 3 (46:36):
Will Disley love Uncle Will Disley.
Speaker 2 (46:37):
Who's he with the charges right now? I think he's
with the charges right now? But there are tight ends
on this roster that no disrespect to Will Disley are
a lot more physically gifted than Will Disley.
Speaker 3 (46:50):
How do we get these tight ends going?
Speaker 4 (46:52):
Yeah, as a receiver, I say, no, don't worry that
less tight ends. Get the receivers out there on the field,
five light outs, you know, get the tight ends off
the field.
Speaker 7 (47:00):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (47:01):
But yeah, when you have Farrell Brown, this was he.
I thought he played fantastic. A. J. Barner got in
the mix too, he got early, he got in the mix.
But to have three guys that you can consist, you
don't have to worry about you and then go in
and block too, that's the biggest thing. I t The
position of a tight end to me is like it's
like the linebacker, right. I don't know how linebackers do it.
(47:22):
I think it's crazy and I would get in there
and be concussed every play. But tight ends have to
as a receiver. We don't like to block, right, I
mean we have to block.
Speaker 5 (47:31):
We don't like it.
Speaker 4 (47:31):
We get in maybe maybe maybe you work something out
with a dB, like, hey, I put my hand on
your chest. The ball's not here. We're like, you don't
worry about it. But but tight ends are in there.
I mean they're they're down and dirty. We're gonna see
Noah Fan have to chip and block Aiden Hutchinson this
week and that that's a huge job. That's a huge task.
And then while they're blocking, then they got to go
out and make big plays and you expect them to
be explosive. So tight ends, to me, are are the
(47:54):
one of the most important positions on the field and
and it's really it's impressive to see what they can do.
Speaker 2 (47:59):
It's been fun watching this defense kind of do his
thing as well. Going into the season, I felt like
the safety position was gonna be on point, the corners
were gonna be on point. I was skeptical about the linebackers, right.
We just talked to Drake Thomas who got some reps
and did this thing. But Jermebaker and Trrell Dots and
I've really stepped up.
Speaker 7 (48:18):
Man.
Speaker 2 (48:19):
When you look at this defense, what position stands out
to you is a D line, linebackers, third level?
Speaker 3 (48:25):
What do you think?
Speaker 5 (48:25):
Yeah, Well, as far as improvement from last year, it'd
be the defensive line, There's no question from it.
Speaker 4 (48:30):
And I almost consider Derek Hall, boy and MafA almost
part of the defensive line too. They're always on the
edge of so all those guys kind of up front,
those front four. I think that's been the biggest improvement
so far. And now I have all the confidence in
the world. And I think Derek Hall is a beast.
I mean, he's been showing his improvement from last year
to this year is like nothing I've seen it really.
(48:54):
But this whole defense as a unit, I think that's
what I think we need to talk about the most,
is how it's not really one guy that's really been
the superstar, but they just they kind of move as
one unit. And that's what Coach McDonald talks about a lot.
He wants him to play, you know, as eleven guys.
Although you can throw all those cliches out, but you
really watch this tape and you and I was.
Speaker 5 (49:12):
I was when I was.
Speaker 4 (49:13):
I was watching the Dolphin a game, and it's like,
you feel like they're playing with thirteen or fourteen guys
on the field. You know, like the guys are last year,
I felt like you'd make a pass and one guy
to make a tackle and if he broke that tackle,
the guy who's running for another ten to fifteen yards.
This year, it doesn't feel like that. It feels like
there's thirteen fourteen guys on the field. You know, once
(49:34):
a guy catches the pass, uh, there's three four guys
wrapping him up.
Speaker 5 (49:37):
And you saw that.
Speaker 4 (49:38):
When you can keep a guy like Tyreek Hill or
Jalen Wattle in front of you, I mean that's you're
doing something right.
Speaker 3 (49:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (49:43):
That that Dolphins team extremely explosive. I was almost like
I wasn't satisfied last week, but I was because you
get the w But I wanted to see the Dolphins
at full strength. I wanted to see Tua and how
they just shoot at the ball and kind of see where.
Speaker 3 (49:57):
This team stacks up. Because I thought, okay, go.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
Going into this week the Detroit Lions week, when I
looked at the schedule, we would know exactly who this
team is and what their strength and their weaknesses are
right now, we're still kind of guessing. We know what
we've seen on film, who they are on paper, but
we haven't seen a team like the Detroit Lions yet,
so we're still waiting. We're gonna see what happens here,
(50:20):
all right, We got more to do when we come back.
Maybe Tyree Snipe will be here, or maybe we'll get
into a film study that's coming up next.
Speaker 3 (50:27):
Right here on Hawk's Lit.
Speaker 1 (50:30):
Hawkss Live, I'm presented by the Dining District of the
Bellevue Collection at Bellevue Square Center Court, live on air
on Seattle Sports.
Speaker 2 (50:40):
Welcome back to Hawk's Lide, presented by the Dining District
at the bell View Collection.
Speaker 3 (50:44):
The show starts at seven every Thursday right here.
Speaker 2 (50:46):
On Seattle's four seven to ten, broadcasting live from Belvy
Square Center Court of Michael Bumpus where Brian Walters and
now we are joined by linebacker Tyree's night, Tyre's how
are you doing?
Speaker 7 (50:56):
Man?
Speaker 6 (50:56):
Good? How about you man?
Speaker 2 (50:58):
We're good man, you're here, man, Thanks thanks for joining us.
I love asking this question. I've been privileged to do
this this show for the last what four or five years,
so I get to talk to to rookies, and one
of the questions I asked him is that my first
game was against the forty ninetists, and I knew that
I was gonna play like, all right, at some point
you're in this game. What was your first game like?
(51:20):
And did you know that you were going to get
some burned that game?
Speaker 6 (51:23):
Uh?
Speaker 10 (51:24):
I know we will get some burn on special teams
for real, But first game, Nah, I want to really
spending to get in.
Speaker 6 (51:30):
I'm glad I was preparing I read it.
Speaker 5 (51:33):
I thought you were gonna steal my question.
Speaker 4 (51:34):
But the one I ask every every rookie that comes
into this show is you know, as a rookie, there's
always that welcome to the NFL moment right that you
just like For me, it was my first time I
ever got hit over the middle. I had three stitches
in my chin, you know, just something like, Wow, this
is for real.
Speaker 5 (51:49):
Have you had your welcome to the NFL moment yet?
Speaker 7 (51:51):
No?
Speaker 6 (51:51):
I don't think I not yet.
Speaker 3 (51:54):
He said, I'm in here. I'm in here right now.
Speaker 2 (51:57):
When I watched you on film when they picked you
up up man, the thing that I liked about you
is that you seem to really diagnose run plays and
kind of like slide through uh and and get into
the backfield. What's your film study? Like, what do you
attest that ability to is just natural instinct? Is a
film study?
Speaker 7 (52:17):
Like?
Speaker 3 (52:17):
How are you? How were you able to put yourself
in good position?
Speaker 10 (52:20):
I think for a show that came with notat your instincts,
but also that came with just playing the game for
a little while, especially at the college level, the game
started to slow down.
Speaker 6 (52:28):
That's everything that came together.
Speaker 7 (52:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (52:31):
Yeah, going into this season, you know, the talk with
the Seahawks was that, you know, the probably the least
depth of the position was.
Speaker 5 (52:37):
Probably the linebacker crew, just unknowns.
Speaker 4 (52:40):
And then we get to the preseason and I see, oh,
well look at look at this tires night out there,
this fourth round draft pick. I saw you blow up
a screen in the preseason. I said, okay, this team,
this team, you know, has some depth here. Uh to you,
what has that been like just kind of learning the
whole offense and and getting into the uh, you know,
the switch from college to the NFL.
Speaker 6 (53:01):
I think just overall it started off slow.
Speaker 10 (53:04):
I mean, just for everybody coming out of college in
the NFL started off slow. But just over time, through
OTAs and training and everything just started to pick up
and slow down at the same time.
Speaker 6 (53:13):
And that's when everything just started to go together.
Speaker 2 (53:16):
So ty Reese went to Independence College and uh or
is it in Indiana? Na, that's in Kansas, in Kansas,
thank you in Kansas. And he was on Last Chance You.
I love Last Chance You. And it really shows just
the grind because a lot of people see the glamorous
side of college football and these guys being five stars
(53:38):
and and uh and being on TV and doing all
this stuff. But your your path was a bit different.
What about your path helped you get to where you
are today?
Speaker 10 (53:47):
I think just going from high school to going to
junior college for two years, then going to a small
D one college and on tesxas just taking everything for granted,
just you know, just honestly just planning or else that
with Dell and just overall it is just made making
the treasure that ends was more accountable.
Speaker 5 (54:05):
Can you can you take us through draft day? What
was that like?
Speaker 4 (54:08):
Getting drafted by the Seahawks and and you know.
Speaker 10 (54:10):
Tell me everything that was going on now, I couldn't
really enjoy it, for I could of house. I stayed
at It was just a little secluded neighborhood and the
internet was bad, so they called me I'm picking up
and then answering and so like, I couldn't really enjoy
the whole moment. I had to go to another room
and the answer I'm here to everybody in the background screaming,
So I couldn't really enjoy it.
Speaker 5 (54:29):
Did you have a feeling it was gonna be the Seahawks? Nah,
no idea. Had you had you talk to the Seahawks prior.
Speaker 6 (54:36):
Had on top third to visit nice?
Speaker 2 (54:39):
When when did you realize like football was going to
be your thing? You played the sports when it when
it didn't lock in for you?
Speaker 6 (54:44):
I mean I've been playing football since what he was
able to play football, So just the whole life the
only thing I stuck with.
Speaker 4 (54:52):
What's uh, what's your prep been like this week going
into Detroit Lions?
Speaker 5 (54:56):
Can you tell us kind of what are you ready for?
How you're preparing?
Speaker 10 (54:59):
How's a big on just preparation for the game, just
being good to watch your film over the last a
couple of days, all sorts of practicing that everything just
been going to good with just got to prepare good
because you know, it's a good team Monday night.
Speaker 6 (55:11):
So it's gonna be a good one for sure. But
just preparation being our key.
Speaker 3 (55:15):
What's the what's the LB room? Like?
Speaker 2 (55:17):
You know, you got you got Jerome, you got Dodson,
you got yourself, you got Drake who we just spoke
to and said it you guys have connected and the
uh you know uh and getting your reps out there.
Speaker 3 (55:29):
How would you describe the linebacker room?
Speaker 6 (55:31):
The linebacker room is just funny? Does everybody just funny?
Speaker 7 (55:34):
There?
Speaker 6 (55:35):
Go lot, that's a good room.
Speaker 10 (55:36):
But is everybody on the same level just trying to push,
push each other to get better. Ain't nobody like in
the Monster to hating just everybody just chilling also pushing
at the same time.
Speaker 3 (55:47):
Yep?
Speaker 4 (55:48):
Is there a it doesn't even have to be in
the linebackers room. Is there just a veteran on the
team that has really helped you with the transition to
the NFL?
Speaker 6 (55:54):
For sure? T Dot and Bait.
Speaker 10 (55:56):
I mean I'm looking at them for everything, so it
ain't try to be nothing wrong and to tell them
what I need to hear at the same time where
I can do better.
Speaker 6 (56:03):
So the whole transition being smooth for me.
Speaker 2 (56:06):
Yeah, coach McDonald, he's an LB dude. You know, that's
the physician he coached coming up. What have your interactions
with him been?
Speaker 10 (56:13):
Like just honestly what you would talking about. And again
at my college tape, you want to see that quick
so like that's what just been. This whole point tells
me every time.
Speaker 4 (56:23):
So what I hear is you your junior and senior
year at utub you you went, you went off right,
you had tackling everything. What was the difference between that
and you know, freshman sophomore year? How'd you make How
did you get that much better.
Speaker 10 (56:35):
This last you know, like I said, everything slowed down
and started to pick up at the same time. But
also you know it's a last one. You gotta go out,
So I had to go crazy my last year.
Speaker 3 (56:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (56:47):
Well what was off season like the preparation for the NFL.
You know a lot of guys when I was getting ready,
everybody go to Florida. It seems like all my dudes
just went to Florida and we trained there. What is
your your your preparation life for the NFL?
Speaker 6 (57:03):
Well, I won.
Speaker 10 (57:03):
I had a couple of options, like and you're just
the Dallas and Arizona. I wanted to go back home,
so I had went to Florida. I was down in
Miami training bab murridoz yep. Just I want to say
game ended November tween, the eighth out on the road
from Tessa's, like December tens, and started training like December fifteen.
So I've been training since December fifteen.
Speaker 4 (57:24):
At what point in your career, college, high school, whatever
it was, did you say NFL is a possibility.
Speaker 5 (57:30):
I'm gonna make this happen.
Speaker 6 (57:35):
I want to say why I got that? Comebin, yeah,
come by if.
Speaker 5 (57:39):
What'd you brking for you?
Speaker 6 (57:40):
I remember four six three?
Speaker 5 (57:44):
You beat you bump?
Speaker 3 (57:45):
You gonna do me like that?
Speaker 2 (57:46):
Or I just asked like that, did he beat you?
Speaker 5 (57:50):
No? No, But I didn't go to combine.
Speaker 3 (57:52):
So oh man, alright, so the NFL. Man, So my
first play the NFL was a special teams play.
Speaker 2 (58:01):
It was a punt return. I catched the punt and
I'll never forget I fair caught it, and uh, the Niners.
Everyone runs into me. It's like they're barking at me.
I don't even know what they're saying. Everyone's yelling at me,
yelling at me, trying to get me to drop that football.
Do you remember your very first play and what was that.
Speaker 3 (58:17):
Like for you?
Speaker 6 (58:19):
For show was on defense against the charges.
Speaker 10 (58:22):
First play crazy?
Speaker 6 (58:27):
You want to pass play, run play, It's crazy. I
can't even remember.
Speaker 3 (58:31):
You already already deep. You're already like two hundred plays in.
You're like you have them good?
Speaker 10 (58:36):
They was crazy for I remember my first though, Yeah,
which one was that there's a little cut back one
out of the based defense played it right?
Speaker 6 (58:45):
He was able to step in.
Speaker 2 (58:47):
What do you like on the field because there's different
personality is there's like there's a talker, there's a guy
who's always smiling and laughing. There there's the quiet dude,
like what what do you like when you're when you're
out there playing ball?
Speaker 10 (59:02):
We'll show how we just said. I think that just
depends how I'm feeling that day. You go get a
different me every day, so depending how I'm feel them.
Speaker 6 (59:09):
All right, So what all to a different movies? Yes
think today?
Speaker 4 (59:13):
What are your thoughts on Seattle so far? Have you
gotten outside the city? Have you done anything in this area?
I mean, I know it's different than Florida and Kansas,
So are you surprised by it.
Speaker 5 (59:22):
What's it been like so far.
Speaker 10 (59:23):
I've been smooth driving through the city. That's a good thing,
for sure, But I ain't really being not exploring on driving,
I've been doing my homeboys came in, I would take
them on for hand and uh so that's only exploring.
Speaker 3 (59:34):
I did nice to you didn't do yet? Yeah? You
went out top?
Speaker 6 (59:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (59:41):
Nice?
Speaker 6 (59:41):
You think it good? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (59:44):
Have you done fairy yet? No? No, that's the next thing.
Speaker 4 (59:50):
Well, you know the fairies, the boats that go up
to the islands very Seattle.
Speaker 3 (59:55):
Need to how's that space? You know?
Speaker 2 (59:57):
I remember my first time going up there. I I
feel that thing sway. From last to run, I was, hey,
I'm I'm It took me twenty minutes to chill. I'm
sitting there like this the whole time. And then after
twenty minutes.
Speaker 6 (01:00:12):
I heard sway.
Speaker 3 (01:00:13):
I'm scared of I don't mess with that stuff, man,
I don't do it.
Speaker 5 (01:00:16):
I've never heard that thing sweat.
Speaker 3 (01:00:18):
You know, you've never heard of sway.
Speaker 4 (01:00:19):
I've never seen it sway. My dad used to have
to write yellow not gonna see it swall. I've never
felt it.
Speaker 3 (01:00:24):
I should say that that's different.
Speaker 5 (01:00:25):
My dad used to ride the elevator up with his
feet out. We used to work at the space with
his feet out. Back in the day when.
Speaker 3 (01:00:32):
What are we doing here?
Speaker 5 (01:00:33):
Is back? This is back.
Speaker 3 (01:00:34):
We got safety measures back the bag that who's your
favorite team growing up?
Speaker 10 (01:00:42):
I want to say I had to like the Butts
and the Ravens. Butts and the Ravens because the defense
I would assumed Temple was the closest to me, were
like thirty minutes away from the stadium.
Speaker 6 (01:00:52):
Yeah, man, Ray Lewis for the Ravens.
Speaker 4 (01:00:55):
It makes sense speaking of that. Everything safe in Lakeland
from the hurricane coming in?
Speaker 6 (01:01:00):
Have you thank you's? I mean my homeboys Barbican early.
Speaker 5 (01:01:04):
All right, hurricane what hurricane?
Speaker 6 (01:01:08):
I guess it's okay. I need to hit you for real.
Speaker 3 (01:01:11):
See what hurricane we barbecuing baby.
Speaker 10 (01:01:14):
A lot Florida for sure, the biggest one probably twenty seventeen.
Speaker 6 (01:01:18):
Yeah, I was a part of hurricane. That was crazy.
Speaker 3 (01:01:21):
See from California.
Speaker 2 (01:01:22):
We do earthquakes in California, crazy crazy. All right, man,
you know one time for Tyree snipe man, Tyre's we
appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (01:01:30):
Taking time out of your day and joining us when.
Speaker 2 (01:01:32):
We come back we'll go inside the film room. Gino
Smith finding DK for a touchdown, he got Tyro Dowson
for a sack, and Zach Sharvine scoring a touchdown in
the fourth That is next right here on Hawk's Lie.
Speaker 1 (01:01:44):
Hawks Slive presented by the Dining District of the Bellevue
Collection at Bellevue Square Center Court, live on air on
Seattle Sports.
Speaker 3 (01:01:55):
Welcome back to Hawks Live, Oh, Michael Bumpus with Brian Walters.
We were just joined by Tyres night.
Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
Now he's headed home and it's time for us to
watch some film. This is what I love doing. If
you're not watching Thursday night football. The Dallas Cowboys get
it done against the New York Football Giants. I believe
Dak Prescott is undefeated all time against the Giants. Goodness, gracious,
I feel bad if you are a Giants fan. I
feel bad if you're a Cowboys fan too, because they
(01:02:21):
gash you up every year and then just let you down.
All right, but let's talk about us. We're going inside
the film room. This is when we break down three plays,
three significant plays in the game last week against the
Miami Dolphins. This first play, Gino Smith finds DK Metcalf
for a seventy one yard touchdown.
Speaker 3 (01:02:37):
Gino out of.
Speaker 9 (01:02:37):
A shotgun Macintosh in the game and now he swings
out to the left side. Gino steps up in the pocket, looks,
holds froze, got DK open thirty twenty fifty ten. Don
runs away from Miami touchdown. Sheha hawks seventy one yard
of the DK. Gino waiting, wait a great rounds and
(01:03:02):
then DK.
Speaker 5 (01:03:03):
Just popped into the secondary open.
Speaker 9 (01:03:05):
Gino laid it up there and the secondary never had
a chance to catch DK.
Speaker 2 (01:03:13):
So this was after the interception by Gino. Smith trying
to get rid of the football. Instead of taking a
a a safety, he throws it to Zach Scharbon name
they hold up.
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
Dolphins kick three.
Speaker 2 (01:03:25):
The Seahaws get the football and waste no time going
up top to DK Medcalf be weezy, what did you see?
Speaker 5 (01:03:32):
Well?
Speaker 4 (01:03:33):
You know the best part about this is this, this
is chocked up in the playbook is take a shot.
Speaker 5 (01:03:38):
Play like this.
Speaker 4 (01:03:39):
From the very beginning, they are taking a shot. There's
no there's no really really other option for Gino right now.
This is the one where you're just trying to hit
him quick, right You're trying to get back in the
game or not back in the game, but you're just
trying to really get the momentum back from the game
after what happened the previous possession. They saw aggression in
the safety by the Dolphins. That's what you can see DK.
Speaker 5 (01:03:59):
We kept week.
Speaker 4 (01:04:00):
What he's so good at is running those inside breaking routes.
He's running posts and running digs. We see that all
the time from DK, about a fifteen to twenty yard
in route. And and DK is a big bodied receiver.
He's perfect for Gino to hit over the middle with
those kind of plays. And the Seahawks have shown that
on tape over time, time in and time out. And
in this this play, the Dolphins going to a two
(01:04:22):
cover two and so the corners are gonna kind of
ride the receiver but drop him if they sense an
outside Another outside breaking route which came from JSN in
the slot.
Speaker 5 (01:04:34):
He had a little option route it looked like to me,
and he.
Speaker 4 (01:04:36):
Chose to break out and that brought the corner off
of DK, and that leaves DK one on one with
the too high safety. And when DK made that move
in that safety, says ah, I watch film, I see
DK run this route all the time. He's gonna run
a dig route and I'm gonna jump in and I'm
gonna get an interception, and DK said nope, real quick,
(01:04:57):
gave him a little little little juke and at that
time you can't you can't keep catch up with DK,
and Gino was able to throw it over the top.
Speaker 7 (01:05:03):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:05:03):
I love about this. This play happened the same week.
Mal kai person, I'm tired of seeing two high safeties.
You can't throw the ball deep. I'm listen, listen, mal relax,
all right, if you can influence the defense the way
that number fourteen came, this is what's going to happen.
What I like about this play B is the body
language of DK.
Speaker 3 (01:05:22):
It's so easy as a receiver.
Speaker 2 (01:05:24):
If you know you're running a double move, I gotta
sell this first one. You can be so excited about
snapping it off and getting vertical that you're not gonna
sell that first move the way that you should should.
Speaker 3 (01:05:34):
DK did a great job.
Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
Body language was own point, snapped it off and Gino
stood there and threw a nice bomb.
Speaker 3 (01:05:44):
Who says you can't go deep against two I.
Speaker 4 (01:05:46):
Safety exactly, And that's one way to do it and
to your point, bump. It's almost like when you're running
a double move, you make them almost slightly slower, slightly lazier,
so that dB thinks, uh huh, okay, no, I read this.
This is a bad route by you. I'm jumping it
in the boom. Hit him with the with the speedburst,
and that's exactly what DK did for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:06:04):
Seventy one yards his third longest. When this went down,
I thought to myself, this has to be Dka's the
longest touchdown of his career. Nah, third longest of his career.
Speaker 5 (01:06:14):
And one thing we got to talk about.
Speaker 4 (01:06:15):
I know we receivers were losing it here with the
offensive line, but the protection by the O line.
Speaker 5 (01:06:19):
This is a law of slow developing play. This takes
some time.
Speaker 4 (01:06:22):
So you know, Gino Smith has to has to have
you know what, five six sets almost a seven step
dropped when he gathers. He takes time for double moves
to develop. So the offensive line did a great job
holding protection.
Speaker 5 (01:06:34):
He did get hit at the.
Speaker 4 (01:06:35):
End, but Charles Cross threw his guy in the end
and the right side really they pancake their guy, so
he had some good protection on this play.
Speaker 2 (01:06:44):
All right, This next play, Tyro Dowson sacked Skyler Thompson
in the third.
Speaker 9 (01:06:49):
Quarter, third down in two oh get again going down
Thompson and he is really.
Speaker 3 (01:06:56):
Slow to get up this time, as it.
Speaker 9 (01:06:59):
Was Tom te dot who came right up the gut
and Skyler Thompson is walking off the field but he
is not.
Speaker 2 (01:07:08):
Well all right, So before we break down the play,
raves has to be late sixties, early seventies. He put
me on t dot I'm in my late thirties. The
fact that I'm getting slang from a man who is
day there two times my age, I really appreciate it that.
Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
So now you can break down the play bide.
Speaker 4 (01:07:30):
Well, well, I know this is something that coach McDonald
throughout the week stress to Tyrell Dotson. He says, if
you see this formation, you're blitzing. And that's what we
heard Tyrel Dotson talk about. So there was no question
he saw this formation and he didn't hesitate and he
went after it.
Speaker 5 (01:07:46):
And you love it when when a coach that.
Speaker 4 (01:07:49):
Just puts trust in your coach, right when when when
you can when a coach tells you this is what's
gonna happen, this is what you're gonna do and then
it ends up working like this. So I mean Tyrrell
Dotson read the play fake immediately and he went. But
all aspects of this play were covered by the Seahawks.
It was a really good job. They they they they
jammed the middle. They have four big guys in there,
like I can't even see the numbers of the guys,
(01:08:10):
but they jammed the middle. They were not gonna let
the Dolphins run up the middle and get this third
down and short conversion. Boy Mafe got chopped by the
full back, took that away. The Witherspoon took the flat away,
and so really all options were taken. And Skyler Thompson
has to get this out quick if it's gonna work.
And when you when you don't get fooled by the playfake,
like the Seahawks secondary didn't, He's got to hold it
(01:08:33):
for that split second longer.
Speaker 5 (01:08:34):
And that's what allowed time for Tyrol dots and to
get there.
Speaker 2 (01:08:37):
Yeah, and the the defensive line and the edge rushers
just occupy everyone on the line of scrimmage and that
allows t dot as Raves put me on uh to
just rush free and get after the quarterback and do
it efficiently because there are a lot of linebackers who
would hit this guy, lay on them and you get
the flag.
Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
The game is soft these days, Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:09:00):
Back in our day, you could hit somebody clothes line
them and nobody cared.
Speaker 3 (01:09:04):
But it is what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:09:07):
But yeah, I mean it's it's been great, man, So
we have to switch things up a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:09:14):
So that's what we're gonna do on this show.
Speaker 2 (01:09:15):
Today, you guys, make sure you get out to Bellevue
Collection Dining District.
Speaker 3 (01:09:18):
So many great restaurants choose from. Today.
Speaker 2 (01:09:20):
We had our pre show meal at Central Bar and Restaurant.
I had the Philly Cheese steak like I mentioned. You
had the Cas Chicken. They got football on Sundays, they
got Thursday nights and Monday nights.
Speaker 3 (01:09:30):
They got happy hours with Wings.
Speaker 2 (01:09:32):
You got brunch until four pm on Sundays, and the
Wild Macadamian Halib. It is their tree. So you guys
go and check out Central Bar.
Speaker 7 (01:09:41):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
When we come back, it's time to talk that talk
and we'll give you our final thoughts. So talk that
talk is we picked two or three topics. He tells
me I'm wrong, I tell him he's wrong. You guys,
tell me I'm right, and then we get up out
of here. Okay, that's coming up next right here on
Hawk's line.
Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
It's time to talk that talk with Michael Bumpus and
Paul Moyer on Hawks Live.
Speaker 3 (01:10:05):
Welcome back to Hawk Talk of Michael bump Is Hawks Live.
I'm sorry I do so many podcasts I do, Hawk
Hawk Talk, Hawks Live, Hawk This Hawk That. This is
Hawk's Live though. Okay, my guy's looking at it with
so much disappointment on his face. This is Hawks Live.
It's time to talk that talk though. You hear all that,
(01:10:26):
You hear all that Hawks Live.
Speaker 2 (01:10:28):
Talk that, but you know what we're doing, all right, Hey,
First one, this is where we throw a category out
there and he tells me if he agrees or disagrees,
and I do the same thing. And everyone who loves
Wazoo says Michael Bumpas, you are right, okay, everyone who
supports Ivy League schools Cornell says, okay, b Waltz right.
Speaker 5 (01:10:53):
A big red shout out.
Speaker 3 (01:10:54):
I like it, all right, You're not gotta show love,
all right, First one, b what you got? All right?
Speaker 4 (01:10:58):
Here we go, bump Seahawks defense will dominate and hold
the Lions to twenty points or less.
Speaker 3 (01:11:02):
Twenty points the less.
Speaker 2 (01:11:04):
So last week they hold the defense at three points.
I coached high school football for fourteen years and never
held an offense at three points. I shut him out
a couple of times, but not just three. Okay, but
I'm looking at this Detroit Lions offense. Sam Laporter will
see if he's available. You have a Monrow Saint Brown.
You got two really good running backs. You have a
(01:11:26):
good quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:11:27):
Against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Detroit Lions were one
for seven in the red zone, one for seven, so
some things weren't working. But forel me once.
Speaker 2 (01:11:37):
Shame on you for me twice shame on me for
you can't get pulled again. All Right, I'm gonna say,
uh no, twenty points. It's gonna be like twenty five
to thirty or something crazy.
Speaker 4 (01:11:48):
Okay, there it is, there is all right. This is
tough for me because it all depends to me. If
Byron Murphy and Leonard Williams play. Okay, I think if
Byron Murphy and Leonard Williams play, they can stop this
this you know, two headed monster run game. The Lions
haven't forced him to be one dimensional and if that's
the case, under twenty and so I'm gonna stick with
that because I'm gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:12:07):
Say, they say you can't, I can't.
Speaker 5 (01:12:09):
I can't go with that going to but then I
saw your look and I said I better not go
that that way. So I'm gonna go under.
Speaker 4 (01:12:16):
I'm gonna disagree with you bumping under disagreements.
Speaker 3 (01:12:18):
We like disagreements here on Hawk's Live.
Speaker 2 (01:12:22):
All right, next to wim DK, Metcalf will have his
third consecutive one hundred yard game.
Speaker 3 (01:12:29):
It hasn't been done in franchise history.
Speaker 2 (01:12:31):
Are we going to see history on Monday Night Football?
Speaker 5 (01:12:35):
First off, that's crazy.
Speaker 4 (01:12:36):
This has never been done all the wide out. I
mean even Tyler Lockett. I can't believe he hasn't done it.
Doug Baldwin hasn't done it. Steve Largin hasn't done this. Yeah,
so that's wild to me. But so I want to
see history, So I'm gonna be rooting for this. So
I'm gonna say, yes, he's gonna get his third one
hundred yard game.
Speaker 5 (01:12:51):
Uh and in true DK fashion, one.
Speaker 4 (01:12:54):
Big explosive play that breaks the game open, fifty sixty yarder.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
All right, here's my thing. Man, I'll don't want to
be a hater. Okay, I'm not a hater. I promise
you I'm not a hater. But I think that every
week we've seen a different receiver take the charge.
Speaker 3 (01:13:09):
So what are you gonna do with DK. You're gonna
keep this safety over the tip. You're gonna bracket him.
Speaker 2 (01:13:14):
That defense isn't gonna go for that double move anymore.
Speaker 3 (01:13:17):
So that's gonna open.
Speaker 2 (01:13:19):
Up Tyler Lockett to have his first one hundred yard
game of the season. We've seen Jason half one, DK
had two.
Speaker 3 (01:13:26):
I'm not mad if DK goes for three.
Speaker 2 (01:13:28):
I love seeing history, but I'm gonna go with number sixteen.
We interviewed him on bumping Stacey today. Actually the Huddle
executive producer Nasa Troby hooked us up. I'm gonna say
it's gonna be Tyler Lockett. Man, I'm going with Tyler Lockett.
But I a'm mad if DK does it. I hope
he doesn't, but I think the defense is gonna pay
attention to him and lock some stuff.
Speaker 5 (01:13:49):
Dan, I'm excited about this one.
Speaker 4 (01:13:50):
To get your opinion on this, because I know you're
passionate about this one.
Speaker 5 (01:13:54):
So here we go. You ready, what is more useless?
Speaker 4 (01:13:57):
NFL weekly power rankings or nc Double eight pre season
slash weekly polls.
Speaker 3 (01:14:02):
Guys, ready, they're both garbage. They are both garbage.
Speaker 5 (01:14:07):
You can't do that. You gotta pick one.
Speaker 3 (01:14:08):
I gotta pick one.
Speaker 2 (01:14:10):
You're right, I'm gonna go with NCAA preseason power rankings
because look, how are you raking these guys?
Speaker 3 (01:14:16):
One? You're picking five schools. You're saying Bama, Georgia, Oregon,
Ohio State, Michigan are gonna be ranked every year. And
granted they bring in the better.
Speaker 2 (01:14:27):
Recruits every single year, but you gotta play the game.
All right, I'm gonna go on my wazoo tip right now. Okay,
you guys ready for this my soapbox?
Speaker 6 (01:14:34):
All right?
Speaker 2 (01:14:35):
I saw a graph where Matier was not mentioned as
a Heisman candidate. They had Alabama quarterback over him, Ohio
stayed over him. Uh, University of Miami deserver deserves deserves,
but everyone else they do not have the stats, and
my guy John Matier has all right, So I'm done
(01:14:58):
with that. It's it's for sure. NFL rankings are garbage too.
Speaker 3 (01:15:02):
Power.
Speaker 4 (01:15:03):
I'm actually I'm I'm gonna respectfully disagree because I actually
think NCAA preseason rankings they have something to do with
who makes the playoffs if you start higher, they're actually
it's actually important to start higher in the rankings, so
they actually mean something, right, It's the NFL power rankings
mean nothing. The record does everything, but your record. If
you win your division, make the playoffs. It's all about
(01:15:23):
the records. So the power rankings mean nothing, But the
preseason rankings actually mean something because the higher you start,
the harder it is the fallout, and the more like
you are to.
Speaker 3 (01:15:31):
Make the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:15:32):
The higher you start, the easier it is to get
into college football points exactly. So there are something There
are some teams that start up high that shouldn't be there,
and then they lose two games and you're still in
the top twenty five, and then you win one game
late against a ranked team and now.
Speaker 3 (01:15:46):
You're still in it. I get it.
Speaker 2 (01:15:48):
I'm not mad at your opinion, but I'm saying I'm
gonna break the rules and say.
Speaker 3 (01:15:54):
They're all garbage. They're all garbage, right, all right, we
got another one.
Speaker 2 (01:15:59):
The Seahawks become an elite super Bowl caliber team.
Speaker 4 (01:16:04):
If oh man, yeah, yeah, this is jumping the gun
a little bit. If they won the Lions will be
a good test. If they can beat the Lions, Yes,
because because the Lions were in the NFC Championship last year,
so they are an elite team the NFCS. So if
they can beat the Lions, then they will be in
(01:16:26):
that talk to become, you know, an elite Super Bowl
team or at least a n n at the n
C double a time, NFC like championship caliber tea.
Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
Okay, I say, if they can sweep either.
Speaker 2 (01:16:39):
The Rams or the Niners in the in the division,
you gotta sweep one of those teams. The Rams have
had your number of the past few years. The Niners
have had your number the past few years. The Niners
for the last five or six years have been considered elite.
They're banged up. Now we shall see Christian McCaffrey's headed
to Germany to get his uh his calf looked at.
(01:17:00):
We'll see what happens there. But you gotta sweep one
of those teams. If they can sweep one of those
teams when the games are supposed to win and stay healthy,
it's you know balls, I mean, you know how football is.
There's so many things that need to happen, but those
are the things man, all right, all right, not too bad,
not too bad. I don't agree on You're in c
(01:17:21):
double a take, but you know it is what it is.
He went to Cornell, Okay, so I'll take his work
for it.
Speaker 3 (01:17:28):
All right.
Speaker 2 (01:17:29):
Time to give our final thoughts man, and and put
a bowl in this thing.
Speaker 3 (01:17:32):
One.
Speaker 2 (01:17:32):
Thank you guys for coming out here, especially guys expecting
a mom out there.
Speaker 3 (01:17:38):
Baby's kicking right down. She's hanging in there for us.
We appreciate you. Final thoughts man, This is going to
be a tough game. This is going to be a
tough one. Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:17:47):
You can never go into a game in the NFL
like cocky, unless you are the Chiefs in December.
Speaker 3 (01:17:53):
Like no team should be cocky.
Speaker 2 (01:17:55):
I'm looking at this matchup and as most football games go,
it's it's gonna come down to the guys in the box.
How do the big boys perform. If they can do that,
the big boys can't perform on offensive defense, There's a
good chance the Hawks will win this game. But I
think there's gonna be a moment in the game, b
where you get popped in the mouth. You know, you've
been in your first fight in elementary school. You get
(01:18:17):
popped in the face. You're like, oh, I'm in a
real fight, Like you're gonna have to respond. What do
you think about this game?
Speaker 4 (01:18:23):
Yeah, I think you're correct with that that I think
Bira Murphy and Leonard Williams playing is gonna be huge.
I think without them it's gonna be very, very tough.
But these are two good teams and it's gonna be
all about it. You know how these games are. It's
separated by two or three big plays, right, and that's it.
That's the difference in these games. So it's to those
two or three plays, to this ball bounce your way,
(01:18:44):
and that's sometimes when two big time teams go up
against each other.
Speaker 5 (01:18:48):
That's all it takes the whole rest of the game.
Speaker 3 (01:18:50):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:18:51):
I always laugh at this because you could.
Speaker 4 (01:18:53):
Go a full game just to battle and it comes
down to the last second field goal, right, and if
the kicker makes this field goal and you win the game.
Oh what a game we played? You know, special teams, offense, defense,
we played so well. We won this game the kicker
misses that field goal. We really we were terrible on defense, offense,
struggle and only by one kick, which has nothing to
(01:19:14):
do with any of that.
Speaker 3 (01:19:15):
So you know, so that's just by kickers, by the way, he.
Speaker 5 (01:19:20):
Kick come on, just because one of them is a
better golfer than me. But that that's it.
Speaker 4 (01:19:25):
It's gonna be a hard fought game and the ball
is gonna bounce one way or the other at some point.
And this is this is my deep analyst analysis right
like this.
Speaker 5 (01:19:34):
You know, this is what I do. Ball is gonna
bounce one way.
Speaker 4 (01:19:36):
Someone's gonna score more points, and someone's gonna win somewhere.
Speaker 3 (01:19:39):
You know, you get hitting them off. You gotta respond
to oh man, well you know what. We thank you
guys for coming out and hanging out for us today,
Man Space.
Speaker 2 (01:19:50):
Special things to Tim Twentyman, Drake Thomas, and Tyres Knight
