Speaker 1 (00:02):
In the Lab, a Texans podcast that takes a different
look at things. Due Doherty and John Harris have their
lab coats and goggles on and the Bunsen burners burning.
Here's Drew.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
It's been a long long time, John Harris, how are
you good? Not a long time since you and I talked,
Not a long time since you and I did in
the lab, but a long long time since we've done
it in the lab.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
For a game week.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
Oh wow, glorious, isn't it glorious? It's been since January.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
That's a long time.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Going into the Colts Gates. Oh, how our worlds.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Have just like nine months? Yeah, I mean you think back.
Speaker 5 (00:40):
I was, actually, it's funny to bring it up, Drew,
because I was actually thinking about this driving in today.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (00:45):
I heard something about last year's first game and this
year's for I don't know why that got into my head.
I was like, man, the comparison to what lineups were
in twenty twenty two versus the line up in twenty
twenty three. Now there'll be some similar names. But you
would think it's only one year's time. But yet it's
been one year's time. Yeah, And I got a feeling
(01:05):
that the opening day lineup, I mean just offensively, you know,
having Shaq Mason in it, You're gonna have a new center,
You'll have a new left guard. So there's so much
that's just offense. And then I'm a receiver because Brandon
Cooks tidy. I mean, there's just so much new going.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
Into this known quantity in Damian Pierce. You knew he was.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yeah, we were excited about what we saw the preseason,
but right, man, right, but hold it from deal.
Speaker 5 (01:29):
And then of course you're taking on Baltimore and yeah,
probably have an idea what they're gonna do defensively. Now
they're also down some personnel on that side of the ball.
But offensively, I mean they may not have Mark Andrews.
They may have Mark Andrews. How does that change what
they're gonna do.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
I don't know. It's gonna be interesting.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Hold that thought. We're gonna get into that because yesterday Monday,
we went into the Texans locker room for a little bit.
We heard Miko Ryan speak at the press conference. Right,
Demiko had this to say about getting ready for a
Ravens off defense that's gonna look a little bit different
than it has in years past.
Speaker 6 (02:04):
It's a challenge because you don't know what you're gonna
get and so a lot of unknown and that's every
first game. There's a lot of unknown with the first
game in the NFL every year. So you know, you
trust your technique, trust your fundamentals, trust our preparation of
what we've been working on all through our training camp,
and guys just have to be where they're supposed to
be and playing as eleven. And it's really the first
(02:24):
game is really it's truly all about us, right offensively,
defense especially, it's about us. If we do our job,
everybody is playing together, then that'll take care of itself.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Now, John, it's gonna be a different offense, clearly, but really,
what's it gonna be.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
I talked with Jimmy Ward.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
He had an interesting take on things as far as
how you study film of them and how the Ravens
are gonna study film of the Texans defense.
Speaker 7 (02:50):
They're probably going back looking at the twenty nineteen game. Really,
like you got to go off the preseason games. You know,
the first game is kind of up in the air,
like we really don't know what they're gonna do.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
They really don't know we're gonna do.
Speaker 7 (03:00):
We got, you know, supposedly, you know, we've got to
go back to look at old fann. They probably looking
at old forty nine er fam were looking at their
fainn were looking at Georgia fam.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
So we don't know what we're gonna get.
Speaker 7 (03:11):
But when it comes down to it, it comes down to
like just you know, playing ball with great fundamentals and
just having great technique.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
It's a bit of a chess match.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
You don't really know exactly what's gonna happen offensively, how
they're gonna line up, what they're gonna do, And on
the flip side, they don't really know defensively what to
expect all away from the Texans, there's gonna be wrinkles
all around. But if you had to hazard your best
guess what sort of offense is gonna be rolled out
there for the Ravens on Sunday that the Texans got
(03:41):
to get set for.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Well, this is what makes it interesting.
Speaker 5 (03:44):
I would imagine that in this building there's a lot
of University of Georgia film being watched. I don't imagine
over in their building there's a lot of forty nine
ers film that.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
They're over there watching.
Speaker 5 (03:54):
Jimmy said, yep, So it's almost like they're not even
watching the Texans and the Ravens. You probably are watching
the preseason games get a little idea maybe the personnel,
but you know, Lamar hasn't played a game in a while,
so I don't know how much. And even if you
watch him on film, I don't even know that you
can get truly prepared for him in that way. And
(04:15):
I think that's the that's the biggest thing. It's Look,
it's it's really hard to really comprehend what each unit
could be doing. I mean, we watched the defense all,
you know, all summer, but there's a lot of times
where we're not having an opportunity to watch them.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
You know, they're doing things and walk through they're doing.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
Things we saw was basic stuff, right, So it's hard
to even you know, even I'm going back to the
forty nine ers, like, Okay, what did the forty nine
ers do?
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Like here's some of the things to look out for.
Speaker 5 (04:41):
I think it faced the Ravens Todd Mankins and new
offensive coordinator coming over from the Georgia Bulldogs and their
offense with Stetson Bennett who's now with the La Rams.
I mean, stets can run, but they had a lot
of pro concepts, you know, a lot of you know,
trap protection passing, drop back passing, playoffs and stuff, some RPOs.
(05:02):
I think one of the things that the Ravens will
do is run screens of different types of screens to
try and get Save Flowers available, to try and get
the ball out to OBJ. I think they'll want to
use screens to use that as an extension of the
run game. My hope is that the Texans will hopefully
bottle up the run game, and they've got to find
(05:23):
ways to get the ball out to those weapons. I
don't quite know what to expect from the running backs
of Baltimore.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
You know, JK.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
Dobbins is you know, is not happy with his contract.
You know, who knows who what happens there. I do
know that if they've got say Flowers, they've got OBJ
and they got a shot Bateman, Lamar can't get back
there and throw the football and then it's a matter
of okay, well is Lamar finding those guys open to
have too much time?
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Do we have to bring a blitz? We bring a blitz.
Then how do you.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
Account for Lamar? Do you spy on Lamar. There are
a lot of different things that are going to have
to happen. But haven't seen Lamar in a long time,
haven't seen him in this offense. Ever, some new players
in this offense. So my hope is there's a lot
of rust as they're trying to incorporate all of this.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
And the Texans are able to take advantage of that.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
And I think one of the things, especially with Lamar,
and I think this happens for a lot of guys,
Lamar has not been tackled at all. He's been tackling
in training camp, he didn't play a preseason game. He
hasn't been tackled at all the first few times that
he runs the football to the extent that you can
get guys there to stop him, you've got to have
a couple of guys physically leaving an impression, and the
(06:32):
third and fourth guys have got to be punching and
get the ball out because when you haven't been tackled
for a while, and I would say the last time obviously,
his last game was what back in November twenty two,
so it's do the matter ten eleven months since he's
been hit, and if he's going to choose to run
the ball, which I would imagine they'll have some runs.
First couple of guys hold him up. Next guy's bang bang,
(06:53):
punch that thing out. You'll get one out because guys
haven't been tackled the first time they get tackled. Your
body has to get callous to his body isn't callous
to it. Now you have to get there to be
able to do that. So I do think there'll be
some design run game. I do think there's gonna be
some scrambles on a straight dropback. I do think there's
gonna be some bootlegs and some movement move the pocket
(07:16):
things for Lamar, and you just have to stick and
move the best you can on defense because it's all
gonna be new now.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Flip side.
Speaker 5 (07:23):
You can show some things defensively to Lamar that maybe
he hasn't and won't see on film. But my guess
is they've got every forty nine Ers game last year
or two, and we've got every Georgia game for the
last year or two, and there really is no like
the preseason you probably have gone through. But it's so vanilla,
Like you said, it's really just to get kind of
(07:43):
an idea of personnel. But with those guys not having
been tackled during the preseason, man, bring the funk, because
you just when you're not tackled, Alo boom. It's the
first time you've tackled in a while. Man, that ball
can get popped out. And you never know in a
game like this when you get a turnover early what
that can mean for your offense with one offense that's
got a lot of changes with rookies at some key spots.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Okay, well that's gonna bring us to our Twitter question
of the day, John Receivers Wise, they've got some guys
that looks like they can play in Beckham yep, Flowers
cause some problems. So how much of Beckham will Derek
Stingley Junior see? How much of Flowers will Steven Nelson see?
And vice versa? How much will each of those guys
(08:26):
see of each other? How much of that LSU matchup
of great LSU receiver versus great LSU corner although they
never played together, but Stingley and Beckham, how much we're
gonna see of that?
Speaker 5 (08:37):
I'd like that matchup better Stingley and Beckham. I really
don't like any matchup against a Flowers. I mean, today's
so sudden and so quick. I don't like any of
the matchups you're gonna have to give whoever it is, honestly, honestly,
I think you can give help to whoever's on Flowers
and try and play OBJ as best you can't man
a man, you really.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Don't have great options there.
Speaker 5 (08:58):
I don't get the impression, and that, at least right now,
that either of the corners will travel with guys.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Not right now. I think it.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Maybe as the season goes on, maybe, but right now
I think it's you know, you're on this side, you're
on this side, will kind of play it as it is.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
But you see, when you say travel, some people not
not knowing that needs that means like just sticking your
best corner on their best wide receiver and let him go.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Wherever that guy is, he travels with him.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
Right now, there are different ways to go about this.
One of the things the Patriots used to do. I
remember at twenty sixty in particular, they would take their
second best corner and put him on Hopkins with help.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Yeah, And then.
Speaker 5 (09:35):
They would take their best corner and put them on
your number two receiver.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
And I always thought that was genius.
Speaker 5 (09:40):
I'm like, that's that's brilliant because now you're devoting you're
devoting time and effort to Hopkins, but you then have
your top corner playing your number two guys, so you
would think you'd have an advantage there.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
Defensively, always thought that was a really good way to
go about it.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
Now, how you look at Steing and Nelson, who's to say,
but I would imagine for right now, there may not
be there may not be a traveling component. First of all,
what that does is it doesn't always mean this, but
sometimes when the guy travels, it can be an indication
of zone or man. Not all the time, because you
can have a guy travel and if that receiver keeps
(10:14):
staying on the outside, well they could just play zone
because that guy's traveling plays one. But the second you
move that guy that's traveling and the receiver, you move
him inside, and all of a sudden, you see that
corner inside on that side. You're like, Okay, that's man.
So there can be some keys you don't want to
give away there when you do that. But we'll see
I don't know that. I look at Obj and Flowers
(10:36):
and go, okay, well, I think you should number one
guy should be here, and I think there they both
have questions once a rookie and one's coming off, you know,
an injury shot. Bateman's another guy you got to account for.
I just think the biggest thing with those guys, you know,
is strap him up as much as you can, but
as soon as they catch the ball, do not allow
the yards after the catch.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
You can't allow the yards after the catch.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
You can't allow OBJ to catch a curl and then
all of a sudden, you come up to make a
tackle for what will be a ten twelve yard game.
You miss it and he goes thirty five. You can't
have those things happen. You've got, you know, say Flowers
runs a little you know, slot routes on the inside,
the little whips and returns, et cetera. That's gonna be
a four yard route. It's a four yard game. That
can't be four to forty because you missed a tackle
(11:18):
and he slips you and then runs by everybody else.
So that to me is gonna be a massive kid.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
It always is.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
Tackling is a huge deal, but this group in particular,
you slip a tack or miss a tackle, lamar On Flowers,
Obj Bateman, You're got a lot of a lot of
trouble at that point, So tackling's got to be on point.
You gotta have eleven guys sprinting to the football as
much as possible.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Last thing, Jalen Petri a week ago called Jimmy Ward
an Apex predator. I told Jimmy Ward, hey, you you've
been called an apex predator. And this is what happened
apex predator when he said that last week?
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Oh, he called he called it.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Oh, it's a compliment.
Speaker 7 (11:57):
It's cool, that's that's dope. That must mean, must mean
I was hunting to something or I feel like he's
an apex predator too as well. You know, you see
the way he moves, in the way he hits his kill,
their instincts.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
It's crazy.
Speaker 4 (12:10):
You don't mind being called that, I guess no.
Speaker 7 (12:12):
Especially that's my boy, so you know, that's my guy.
So he talks a lot too. He gets me going to.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Okay, So with all that in mind, John out in
the wild, who's your favorite apex predator?
Speaker 3 (12:24):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 5 (12:24):
I know.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
To apex like uh, top of the food chain, it's
probably a cheetah.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
Lie, I don't think a cheetah is a cheat ahn apex.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
I don't know. I don't know if it's considered as such.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
Cheetahs that's my favorite animal. Actually, I did it.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
I'm gonna go with cheetah. I think part of it
is I've never been fast. I've been big, I've been bulky,
been a bully. I guess I've never been fast. So
I think there's envy there because the cheetah can just
run anything and anybody down.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
So I'm gonna go to I'm gonna go with cheetah.
Speaker 5 (12:52):
I don't know if that that fits exactly in there,
but I'm gonna go with cheetah.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
Cheatah is a good one. I like killer Wells as well.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
Or one time out of the fifteen times we've been
to the Houston Zoo, which is a great zoo, Yeah,
one time I've seen a cheetah and it was sitting
on like a bench, just kind of looking. It's menacing looking.
I've never they're always hiding the other times i've gone.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
It's a quiet, menacing look. It is to me.
Speaker 5 (13:16):
Jalen Petrie is more at cheetah because it's just he's
quiet and he's waiting and you meet him and he's
the nicest guy ever, and then you get him on
a field and it's like, whoa, he'd decapitated that guy.
So hopefully there are a few of those. Just need
good solid tackles against his Ravens crew.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
That's what you need.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
You don't need the big shots, the big hits, good
solid first tackles, second, third, guy in get the ball out.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
John.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Always fun talking with you. It's great that the season
is finally here.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
Let's go Texans.
