Speaker 1 (00:02):
In the Lab, a Texans podcast that takes a different
look at things. Drew Doherty and John Harris have their
lab coats and goggles on and the Bunsen burners burning.
Here's Drew.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Oh, hello in the Lab.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Number two of the twenty twenty three regular season is
upon us.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Drew Doherty, my guy, John Harris, Good to see you.
Good to be with you. John. How are you, my friend?

Speaker 4 (00:29):
You know, what's damn busy?

Speaker 5 (00:30):
Drew? As always, it's football season now, so it's what
we do. Stay busy, and you do this for what
we've got seventeen more weeks, even by weeks, and it
goes really fast. So you got to make sure you
step back and take a breath. Just okay, that's right
after you play week one.

Speaker 4 (00:50):
After you play week one, you got to take a
breath there. Okay, where are we? What did we learn?
How do we go about Week one?

Speaker 5 (00:57):
And I think there were a lot of good things
to come out of Week one, even at a loss.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Yeah, you're like, at least I was like, dang it,
it's a loss. But you and I were on the field,
we saw firsthand some really good things. Sean Pendergass brought
it up on the radio on Tuesday morning, he said
what I'd been thinking, But an overriding thing for me
was just Willie Anderson. I know everyone talks about CJ.

(01:20):
Stroud understandably, so you should. He's a quarterback, Willie Anderson.
If he's playing most of the quarterbacks on the schedule
this year or just on any NFL regular season schedule,
you know, Sean said, I bet he gets three sacks.
Maybe not three, but hey, one, not five or two
or more tackles for loss. I mean, he was really

(01:43):
really impressive, and not surprisingly so, because we'd seen it
in training camp, we'd seen it in the preseason, we'd
seen it in OTAs, saw it the last few years
at Alabama. I mean everything he was there, He's looking
like he's going to be here in the NFL. And geez,
there was one the sack that he fought, he fought
through a hole, he was getting choked and he still

(02:05):
got the sack. And I was I was with, yeah,
I was with our guy Tyler Suttarth in the end
zone shooting that and you know, probably about forty yards away,
and it was it was remarkable seeing it from that
angle too. I mean, goodness, gracious, the relentlessness, the power,
the agility to fight through things. I mean he almost
got another set there was. He almost sacked Jackson twice

(02:27):
on one of those pressures earlier in the game. I mean,
gott Lee Will Anderson Junior just he stood out, leaped
out to me on Sunday, John. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
It.

Speaker 5 (02:39):
He is definitely a hard to miss guy on the field.
And it happened early, immediately, Yeah, I mean he was
immediately generating pressure.

Speaker 4 (02:49):
This is how good Will was.

Speaker 5 (02:50):
According to Next Jen Stats, Anderson generated six pressures and
six defensive stops. Now, I don't know what they classify
as a stop.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
I've heard it.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
I've heard typically a tackle for loss or zero yards
or like one or two yards time right right.

Speaker 5 (03:04):
Yeah, like a stuffer. A stop is usually a tackle
for plus two yards or less.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
His pressures were the most by a rookie in Week
one since wait for it, Nick Bosa and Josh Allen
did it in twenty nineteen, while his defensive stops were
tied for the most by a rookie edge in Week
one and the Next Gen Stats era since twenty sixteen. Wow,
that's how good he was. That was going against two
formerly I don't know Morgan Moses ever made Pro Bowl.

(03:33):
Morgan Moses has been around the league for a long time.
And Ronnie Stanley, Yeah, they got after it against those
two guys. John Gernard as well. I don't want to
leave John out of this, but obviously the discussions about Will, Yeah,
there's a relentless nature to hunt. And I said this
on the radio to the day and I don't quite
know how to explain this, but I saw this at

(03:53):
Alabama two. Will has this stance that if you watch
it closely, he has this stance as the other team
is coming out of the huddle. And I noticed this
at Alabama too, and it just has this very like
cheetah like. I saw his video one day of a
Safari car where the cheetah had jumped into the back

(04:16):
seat and it was just sitting there in the back
seat and the driver is filming, but he's not moving
because apparently had he moved, the cheeta would have pounced.
So he just stood still and the cheetah just was
on his haunches, just like ready to roll.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Will's kind of got that stance.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
He kind of stands there and you're like, oh boy,
and then he sees where they line up where he
needs to go, and he almost sprints to his lineup
and gets ready and.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
Goes it's it's I don't know, it's hard to explain.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
It's just something from him so often.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Yeah, yeah, and he just kind of it's just the
stance of I'm.

Speaker 5 (04:53):
About to kick your ass, get ready, and then he does,
and it's kind of wild to watch. And so I
saw him doing that, I's like, oh man, it made
me feel good because I'm like, this is what I
saw at Alabama, this is what we saw. And it's funny, Drew.
Every time that I ran a new doc in my
Google docs for some reason, when I just typed docs

(05:18):
for some reason, the first thing that pops up is
my very first Harris one hundred going into the twenty
twenty two season. So this time last year, yeah, and
I had Will Anderson Junior as my number one prospect
a lot of people. I eventually had him at number
two behind Bryce and Bryce won and Will Anderson jets

(05:40):
I finished. So Bryce I thought was just that much
batter as quarter, not better than than Anderson.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
But at a more valuable position.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Nobody at any of their other positions was rated higher
than will Anderson. Kind of like how jj Watt was
the best at his position in the NFL when he
was there. Didn't mean he was the most valuable. He
would say so himself. JJ Watt would, but he was
the best at his position.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
This is what I said.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
This is kind of the scouting report part. His twitch
and hands are top notch. His explosiveness to and through
run blockers is extraordinary. His quickness on loops and stunts
inside unmatched. He's violent and all the best ways in
the field, has a knack for playing his best in
big games. He control blockers with his strength and power.
He has burst off the edge for days. His first

(06:27):
step is blazing fast off the snap, bend power hands.
He beats guards with power, He beats light quick tackles
with speed. He is the alpha in a program with
dozens of them. He's number one all day long, and
borring some unforeseen disaster, he'll be number one April too,
And just as Bryce Shong as a quarterback.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
So I just moved Bryce ahead.

Speaker 5 (06:44):
Point being, all those things I talked about all came
to fruition against Baltimore. Not only that, the one part
where I said his quickness on loops and stunts inside
is unmatched. That's how Stephen Nelson got his interception. In fact,
i'mretty sure I'm gonna put that up on Tell straighter
because it was a great scheme. It was well done.

(07:06):
It was Rush working with coverage. It was Anderson generating
pressure to not allow Lamard a step into his throat,
and it was tremendous coverage from Stephen Nelson. Will Anderson
is all that a bag of chips and I can't
wait to see even more at home and then let
the home.

Speaker 4 (07:19):
Fans see him. And what I love about this, Drew
is there's been.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
So much talking about CJ, because you know, CJ's quarterbacks,
and so much talk about CJ not gonna sit there
and tell you Will has been lying in the weeds.
People want to know about Will and all that, but
the focus has been on CJ, and even going forward
to Will be on CJ.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
He's a quarterback.

Speaker 5 (07:38):
Yeah, But after Week one that now has changed. I
think there's gonna be a ton of people coming to
that stadium going, yeah, yeah, CJ's fine. I want to
see fifty one. I want to see that guy. I
want to see the terminator because this town as you know, Drew,
how many defensive players that we see but that people
want to see play what fownly. You know, even the

(08:00):
linebackers at a time when it was Manrger McKinnon, Zach
Cunningham were incredibly fun to watch together DJ Reider in
the middle, and then the Bulls on parade before that,
you know, Demiko, I mean all these players, these fans.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Are used to seeing really good defensive players.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
I know they want to see great offense, but they'll
really appreciate Will and Anderson for sure.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
You know.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
There's a lot of throwaway lines that we use in
the media that we use just in general in everyday life.
One of them is Kyle and Kyle Brandt made a
good point of it last week. He said, it'll it's
gonna be interesting, or it's gonna be interesting to see. Like,
I say that way too much. I think we all
have fallen into that a time or two. But another
one is keep your eyes on, which you know, okay, don't.

(08:42):
Will Anderson is literally I'm gonna when when the Texans
are on defense and I'm up high or down low
or really anywhere where's fifty one, I want to watch
what he does because that's fun to see. It's fun
to see him just pretty much most of the time
whip the ass of whoever's across for him. And you
don't always you don't always like isolate on certain guys.

(09:04):
I did when Watt was here in twenty fourteen. Really,
anytime Clowny was healthy and out there, that those times
in twenty fourteen when he was healthy, I was like, Okay,
what's the number one pick gonna look like? And then
he'd do something wild. It looked like a grenade blue up,
you know, on the offensive line. Will Anderson is that
way anyway, So we just jumped right into Will Anderson talk,
uh and way, why not? This is in a lab,

(09:26):
this is our podcast to do that. Let's do cream
of the crop, the cream of the crop. We eliminate
Will Anderson from the cream of.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
The crop, the cream of the crop. Thank you, Randy.
A bunch of man savage rest in peace.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
And we got to focus on one player who was
the cream of the crop in your eyes and my eyes.
We each get one, but we'll start with you. Who
is your cream of the crop? Guy from Sunday in Baltimore.
I know it was a loss, but who'd you like
the cream of the crop.

Speaker 5 (09:55):
I have two in mind, and I don't know if
I take one if I'm taking yours, but I don't
want it to be forgotten. How good Jonathan Garnard was, okay,
good Jonathan Gernard. I mean he had a sack well,
Anderson has a sacked. But John played the run well.
He tracked down the bar when Lamar was trying to
chase away one time and and John hunted him down.

(10:19):
I feel like we're watching a nation of edge guys
that we've had in a long time, and how hard
they played together. The one other thing that I've noticed
about John is stepping to the forefront to.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
Be one of the leaders on this defense, and.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
That has been a really interesting dynamic that's developed, I
think especially this year. And I think John's always had
that in his in his bag. But you know, injuries
and the one other thing for John two you know,
hantin Newity is a big deal, like having the same

(10:56):
like you and I have been doing in the lab
for how long I.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
Think we started it in like eighteen maybe seventeen, so
we've been.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
Doing this for a good six seven years.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
Man.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
And there's a continuity, we get better at it.

Speaker 5 (11:08):
You know, you can finish my sentences, I can finish yours,
that kind of thing, and it just makes him allow
that much better. Think about John Grenard's coach like he
started with with Bill O'Brien in twenty twenty. He's gone
through how many head coaches, He's gone through, how many
defensive coordinators? He's gone through what three different defensive scheme changes.
He's gone through three or four defensive line coaches.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
But that's a that's the Houston text, the entire team,
you know, and I know what you're saying.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
But yeah, it's it's been a yeah, go ahead, but.

Speaker 5 (11:38):
You give a guy some continuity and a foundation, and
you see what he can do.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
And obviously John needs to stay healthy. He knows that.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
I mean, shoot, he told me that after the year
last year, like two days after the season was over
and he had that pick six against Indy.

Speaker 4 (11:55):
He was just like, you know what, I you know,
I know.

Speaker 5 (11:57):
There's a coaching change, but get it set, get some
annuity in my life.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
And let's see what we can do.

Speaker 5 (12:03):
And as long as John Garnard stays healthy and will
Anderston stay healthy, those two are going to be a
problem yesterday, problem on Sunday for offensive.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Tackles, and and that's a great I love that we
brought up John Garnard because the incident I started talking
about Will Anderson, I thought.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Oh man, we need to we need to ring up Grenard.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
He was really good too, but uh, he's also going
to be a father soon. So Congress got to get
that in the good cream of the crop. For me,
my guy on the stat sheet didn't really do a
whole hell of a lot. And so I think if
you just look at the stats and you hear what
I say, you'll be like, not you, but people in
general might be like, Drew, what the hell are you

(12:42):
talking about? But my cream of the cropper, the crop
Derek Stingley Junior, Ah, good one. I was on the
field like you, like I said, like now, I've mentioned
that a few times. And in the third quarter, about
mid midway through late in the third quarter, a went
up from the Baltimore crowd. I mean they went It

(13:03):
was the most one of the most boisterous responses. It
was that, you know, after the touchdown and when the
guy up with a jumbo trying to the O R
I O L E. S, which is cool because the
Orioles are rolling and everybody's an Orioles fan again up there,
but the crowd roared in the third quarter when Odell

(13:23):
Beckham Junior caught a pass. It was the first reception
of the game. But I looked up it wasn't Stingley
who was covering him. Stingley had him covered all in
the first half. Drew a p I which you could
probably argue was not really a defensive pass interference by Stingley.
That was.

Speaker 5 (13:43):
That was to obj you know what that was? That
was That was James Harden. Yeah, pump faking and get it,
you know, leaning into a guy and then flailing his
legs and then getting the call. That was not a
defensive PI and was the first one.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
I think Odell Beckham Junior is outstanding. Is he all
the way back to what he was? Was?

Speaker 2 (14:07):
No?

Speaker 3 (14:08):
But I bet you when the season ends, it's gonna
look a lot like it if he's healthy, If he
stays healthy of it, I think it's gonna look like
an Odell Beckham Junior type of season.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
I just think that's how good Derek Stingley Jr.

Speaker 4 (14:19):
Is.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
I did did he allow any completions to Beckham, Well
he was covering him.

Speaker 5 (14:25):
I don't know that he did now because Beckham had
that one down the field and then I think there
was one other. I think he was targeted twice, one
incompletion and then.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
The DPI, yes you could argue, wasn't you know.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
And he wound up catching a few passes and he
made some nice catches and it wasn't just Stingley doing
a great job on him. I mean, I think the
other the other guys did are pretty during good job
in coverage as well, but Stingley, I mean, the didn't
even think to throw his way. And that's the Markey
acquisition for that team. Beckham was and they have I
high hopes for him. They went bananas when he finally

(15:02):
did catch a few passes in the uh they started
chanting ob J and it was like, Yeah, that's great,
he's that's his what second catch of the game and
we're in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
So my cream of the crop guy is Derek Stingley Junior.
What he did?

Speaker 4 (15:16):
You know?

Speaker 3 (15:16):
You and I kind of discussed this last week, like
is he gonna travel with guys?

Speaker 2 (15:20):
Is he gonna stay one side the field?

Speaker 3 (15:21):
You also got to kind of give a give one
out to Steven Nelson Junior gets the pick. Pretty good
coverage as well. Zay Flowers, that guy's gonna be a pain.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
In the ass. That guy's really really good.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
But Derek Stingley's my cream of the crop guy for
what he did against Odell Beckham Junior crop.

Speaker 5 (15:35):
You know, one of the things about Zay Flowers, it
wasn't as if Zay was beating a bunch of coverage,
which you can it was. They would just give him
the ball in space and then he just made people miss.
Now there's that you got to make those plays. But
it wasn't like Zay was making you know, these the
cover guys miss. He was just getting the ball in
space and then you know the one that everybody remembers,

(15:57):
he shook everybody. But that's that's what Zay Flower is
going to be, which I would hope on our side
that's what Tank Dell can be for us down the road.

Speaker 4 (16:05):
Save Flower is very, very impressive.

Speaker 5 (16:07):
I think you hit right on it Stingley and Nelson
and for sure and by the way, that catch at
obj made a those Lamar's best thrower of the day.
It's one of the best I've seen him make. It
was a tremendous catch by Obje and it was tremendous
coverage by Shaq Griffin. Shaq was right, he was right there.
But you're going against one of the guys with some
of the best ball skills we've ever seen NFL history.

(16:29):
So there was the funny thing about this game, Drew
is there were so many when I sit down to
de Texans matchup, I do the ultimate eleven player or
moments of the previous game, and when we've gotten even
in wins the last few years, there have been times
where I'm like, man, I I had a hard time
getting eleven.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
This is a loss of sixteen points. I had way
more good moments.

Speaker 5 (16:51):
I had to cut a couple of them, you know,
put them on the cutting room floor.

Speaker 4 (16:55):
So I think there was a lot of positives to
take out of this in Week one, even in not
going on up there and get a.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
Win, because there are a lot of reasons why didn't
play clean offensively, Things needed to speed up, a lot
of experience on that side of the ball. Defense is
put on a short field, so I think there's a
lot of execution stuff that they can get better at
coming into Week two against against.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Indy Amen, which brings us to Indy.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
Who's your under the radar guy that you think is
going to do some things this weekend and and make
some plays that we haven't talked about yet.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
Who do you like?

Speaker 5 (17:26):
Okay, As our buddy Landry Locker says, I'm gonna go
football hard. Oh, I think Shaq Mason is maybe the
most important player in this game against Annapolis Colts. Why, well,
somebody has to solo block Grover Stewart into Forrest Buckner.
Somebody has to and I'm not totally expecting Jared Patterson

(17:48):
have to do that. And I don't know who's gonna
play left guard, so right, so I'm not even considering that.
But Shaq Mason has got to be that veteran that says,
you know what, I've been in these wars before. I've
got to step up. Paid him a lot of money
for the next three years. He's got to take his
game to a different level on Sunday against the Colts,
against those two guys.

Speaker 4 (18:06):
Now, he's built.

Speaker 5 (18:09):
In the perfect way to go against a guy like
the Forest Buckner because he won't lose leverage to Buckner. Now,
Buckner has all the arms and levers and all that
because he's long, he's sixty seven. The Shacks six to
at best. If Shaq can just stay in his stance
and just gun underneath him and Ridan, I think he
can have some success. But it's key because that offensive line,

(18:30):
Shaq and Laramie, the two guys that weren't hurt on
an offensive line, and our veterans and have been through
the battles.

Speaker 4 (18:37):
They've got to play better than they played.

Speaker 5 (18:39):
And this group against the Colts who have always killed
the Texans with Buckner and Stewart, he's got to go
toe to toad. He's got to win those battles so
the Texans can win this war.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
Okay, I like it, Shack Mason, as you're under the
radar guy against the Colts. Final Twitter question of the
day is this, tell me your favorite Texans over the
Colts win all time?

Speaker 2 (19:05):
They've only been ten of them. Which one's your favorite.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
It's got to be twenty fifteen up at Inny. Gotta be.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
Just winning that game on the road. And I actually
used an inspiration because I remember we were coming back
from the Combine in twenty fifteen and we were on
the we were in the taxi going home and you
go and you said, you know what, We've never come
home from Indianapolis happy. I mean, not even the combine.
We're happy, but we're just exhausted. But and I remembered that.

(19:33):
I was like, that's true. And so then we went
the next year in twenty fifteen, and we went up
there and the ninety yard drive to put them ahead,
finished with Brandon Weed and the Jalen Strong, which at
the beginning of twenty fifteen you'd have been like, what
And that put them ahead, and then the defense took
over from there. And I'll just never forget the reaction

(19:54):
on the sidelines in my ears, you know, Mark and
Andre had never called the game a win, Andy, and
I'm just watching all the guys that have been on
the sideline and been there forever, and they were hugging them,
a couple of guys with tears in their eyes. It
was it was just an it was an emotional, freaking moment.
And to beat them up there for the first.

Speaker 4 (20:11):
Time, that was cool. Then we did in sixteen, that
we did in eighteen, and then of course.

Speaker 5 (20:15):
We did in twenty twenty two as well. But that's
not one to talk about. But twenty fifteen for sure
up there, that one that one resonates for a long time.

Speaker 4 (20:23):
How about you?

Speaker 3 (20:23):
That was a good one. I liked the twenty ten
season opener. Yeah, Arian, who fuck what what?

Speaker 2 (20:31):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (20:31):
Two hundred and thirty one yards, three touchdowns. It was
It was the launching of one of the greatest Houston
Texans of all time. And that was a fun that
was that was amazing that that that victory and Demiko.

Speaker 2 (20:43):
Was on the field to that one.

Speaker 4 (20:45):
Yeah, good call.

Speaker 3 (20:47):
Yeah, it's Tamiko's first game, first regular season game.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
As head coach.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
So I can't wait to hear it because no, I
know it's gonna be loud. Anyways, John, always good to
be with. You can't wait to do this again, very
very soon.

Speaker 4 (21:01):

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
