Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hello again, everyone, and welcome to the Official Post podcast
on Jeffrey Gorman Join the week In it we counted
by j J. Saxons and le Verti Folk dot Comedy
the best media members in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
If you're asking me, these two have the answer.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
So we've got a lot of stuff to go over
right now. But guys, I just want to go in
with what's hot, and it's not the Broncos offense right now,
we'll get to that. I'm talking about Anthony Richardson the
final drive. What did this do to this young man's
career for taking steps up of this mantle that he
does for a young rookie quarterback? JJ, we saw it
out there. I'm gonna start with you. Nineteen plays, eighty

(00:36):
yard final drive.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
We saw it.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Wow, what are they gonna do? Are they gonna kick
it and go to overtime? No? No, no, Shane Stiken
rolls the dice, goes back to his big horse like that.
How important was that final three minutes or two minutes
of that football game for the growth of Anthony Richardson
and his leadership.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
I think it's it's big for Anthony's growth, but I
think it's bigger for how the team views him. It's
you can see the belief that those guys have. You
can hear the belief. Lera, you're in the locker room too,
just like talking to guys about Anthony. Everyone on in
that locker room, whether you're on offense, you're on defense,
just you can sense that they know, Hey, if it's

(01:11):
the fourth quarter and we got a shot to win
the game, five is going to go down and give
us a chance to do it. And that is such
an empowering thing for that locker room. And I wrote
this after the game, like this, all offseason, all we
heard was that Rams game. That Rams game. You remember
that Rams game. Well, now we've had two instances this
season in the last three weeks of Anthony being like

(01:33):
showing that that Rams game is not a fluke with
the Jets, the way he led the Colts down in
that game to win that game. And now with the Patriots,
this team believes in Anthony Richardson. They trust Anthony Richardson,
and that is such an an important thing going into
the bye week where you have essentially a four game
season coming out of it.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
And then two things you don't have to watch the video.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
I'm going to say, go to two still frames from
that play, one of them being Quentin Nelson celebrating in
the end zone as Anthony comes across the goal line
right like on that two point conversion shows you everything
about how much this team has rallied in support of
Anthony Richardson, how ecstatic they are for him, how much
they do believe in him. And then the shot of

(02:13):
Anthony running over to the sideline and Zire Franklin just
looking at him like you're a dog, Like that is
talking about dog respect dog right.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
There in that moment.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
And one of the things I asked Shane about this
week was obviously there's you know, the touchdown passed to
Alec Pierce, the two point conversion, but the entire nineteen
play drive Like some of that, of course is preparation
and film and all of that practice.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
But there is a degree and this is.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
Something that Shane confirmed, a degree of that is his
innate ability. There are things that Anthony Richardson showed on
that drive that you absolutely cannot teach. It is his poise,
it's his command, it is his just physicality and ability
in what he brings and knows. Those are the type
of the performances that you can build from as a

(03:01):
player and as a leader in this locker room, and
you're gonna go back.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
You might be down in a game.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
You can draw upon those experiences and be like, hey,
we're not afraid if we need to come back against Denver,
if we need to come back in one of these
critical games that we have moving forward, Hey we can
draw upon this experience, rally together, and we have the
confidence and the guy under center to be able to
do it. Because that call, Shane Steichen says, that was
a gut call, you know, for him to go for
in that situation. It was you know, analytics aside, no

(03:27):
matter what it says, but there are some analytics that
say that that's the way to do it right, that
that's the more effective plan of action. But I think
in that situation, this was This was Shane looking at
the guy who he has and be like, these are
the situations that we brought you here for.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
You're not going to stop him on that play, Like
I know, he could have handed it off to Jonathan Taylor.
Was his own read, and he's reading to buy the linebacker.
If Tavy crashes down, he hands it off to JT.
And JT probably walks in for the game winning score.
But in that moment, you want you want the ball
in Anthony Richardson's hands because at six four two forty four,

(04:02):
with his power down there, you're you're not gonna stop him.
I I likened it too, like and this is I'm
not trying to make this comparison directly, but like, how
many times do we see Cam Newton do that in
his career where it's like Carolina's got the ball on
the one yard line, you know what they're gonna do.
You know exactly what they're gonna do. He's gonna run
it and you can't stop it. Like that, that just

(04:26):
you It doesn't matter what you do as a defense,
you're not gonna stop It is such an empowering thing.
So when Shane says it was a gut thing, his guts, like,
I just give the ball to Anthony. Let Anthony have
a chance to go win the game, because he's gonna
do it from that down and distance. I mean that
that right there. You're You're absolutely right, Laier. That's why
you drive to Anthony Richardson.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
And physical stature and ability aside, it's also his mentality
that he will not be denied in those situations.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
That's a huge part of it.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
The other thing I want to go back on that
drive to the first fourth down, yes, what was it?

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Three fourth down conversions?

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Four convergence, but the first one to mo where there
is unblocked pressure immediately from Jabrill Peppers. How many times
does a quarterback take a sack on that play or
he just panics get rid of the ball. The Colts
tried to run a man beating mesh concept where you
kind of the goal was to have Michael Pittman Junior
kind of fly free with Molei Cox coming across the

(05:20):
other side. That doesn't happen. The Patriots zone it up
and mesh does not really work against zone. So Anthony's
ability to avoid that sack and then roll out to
his right there's really no one there and Moe kind
of picks it up. He works into space, gets that
that completion. Like I watching that Broncos game last night,
Oh Brown's game. Sacks on those drives, whether it's fourth

(05:43):
down or first down, those are killers. It is so
hard to come back, especially on the road, from taking
a sack and all of a sudden you're looking at
second eighteen. The crowd's out for blood, the defense is
out for blood, and Jameis Winston throws a pick six.
You know, that's what happens. It's a compounding thing when
you take a sack on those drives. Anthony Richardson has
not been sacked on his last twenty eight dropacks when

(06:04):
he's been under pressure.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
And it was three backup alignment this past week. Two.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, but he played great.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
I mean Mark Lewinski a guy who obviously has great
familiarity with this organization, but he was signed out of
the practice squad less than two weeks ago active roster.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Right he steps in.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
You got Danny Pincer playing his first game in you know,
since the preseason in Philadelphia last year when he broke
his ankle, and then you have Matt Gonsalves flipping over
to the right.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Yeah. Unbelievable. But even that, I mean, they're gonna allow pressures.
It's gonna happen. You can't have a game where you
don't get pressure. That's just not realistic. Anthony's ability to
not get sacked on it is now becoming that to
me when I think about these fourth quarter drives, that's
kind of where I start. He gives you such a
floor of like we're gonna have a shot at success
because he's not gonna take a sack on those drives.

(06:51):
He might have to throw it away, but you know what,
you can live to fight another down if it's third
and ten versus if it's third and eighteen in those situations.
And that's where I start with Richardson, And it's something
we knew about him coming into his rookie year. This
was on his profile at Florida. He doesn't take a
lot of sacks, but seeing it now play out in
these clutch moments where he's able to not panic when

(07:13):
you got a guy screaming at you, unblocked off the
edge and you can just say, all right, I'll go
go make a play.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Can we go back to Monday's presser with Shane There
was a really funny moment in which did you ask him?
Someone on the zoom call asked about have you ever
been a part of a game winning two point conversion?
And he was trying to think back, Jace, you got him.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Yes, and look at I was looking at the list
because I had it up for five colts. Things that
I was writing that day and I'm looking down the
list and I was like, what I remember. There was
this game in twenty eighteen when it was a different
game where Mike Vrabel went for two. It was in
London and he didn't get it, and it was like
this whole blow up. Oh Mike Vrabel, What an idiot,

(07:57):
What a stupid decision. And it's like, no, he's being
a And it turns out that's kind of who he
was as a coach and wanted to building a great
program there. Yeah, But then Shane forgot about Philip Rivers
hitting Mike Williams for a game winning two point conversion
against the Kansas City Chiefs that year with under thirty
seconds to go or whatever it was. So I asked,
I asked my question to him, and then I was like, hey, Shane, also,

(08:19):
I got you, like you were a part of one.
And he's like, ah, I can't. I just watched that
play the other week, Like so you know I mean
in those moments, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Well he said it was.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
So I talked to him a little bit, We had
some fun with it, and he was saying, well, he
was trying to think as a play caller if he'd
been because he was the quarterbacks coach at that point,
so he didn't necessarily call the play, but he did
reference that he specifically not only did he watch that play,
he sat down and watched that play last week with
Anthony Richardson.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
And look what happened. Just be ready, hey, really quick.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
You're on the sidelines there, you're watching this drive methodical.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Freezing Mike Key stre.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
New England.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
But you're there, you can I mean you're with an
earshot of Shane talking on his headphone. So did you
when did you think both the viewer up in the
press backs, Hey, he's going to get in to get out,
he says, Hey, spire up the plane. We're losing or
we're winning on this play. Like did you know, like
even a play before the touchdown went in that you
kind of thought Shane Steichland, known as a riverboat gambler
around this in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
I thought as soon as Alec Pierce scored, I was like,
you got to go for it, just because they'd moved
the Patriots had moved the ball so well and there
was enough time and they've got a clutch kicker back
there that I was like, oh, you can't leave this
to chance, right, this is so kind of an all
or nothing pushed the chips in.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
I said, when they got down inside the ten yard line,
my initial thought was that they weren't going to go
for it because they had been running so many plays.
Usually you'll see a coach be like, yeah, we didn't
go for it there because we exhausted all of our
short yardage like low red area plays, and we just
didn't have anything left. So we kicked the field goal
or they kicked the pat And then when I saw

(10:00):
I saw him put his two fingers up, I was like, Okay,
I bet this is gonna go to Anthony because also
in that moment, you have a gas defense that's been
on the field for nineteen plays, and yeah, they can
rotate in and out your offensive line. You tell them, hey,
give me one more play, one more play in this game,
and let our quarterback just force his way over the

(10:22):
goal line. You don't need a designery play for that
to work. And I thought it was interesting that the
first play they ran it was second in goal from
the two. It was the same play that Anthony scored
on earlier in the game, where it's a direct snap
and he tries to just go to the right side
and that gets stuffed. So they then kind of work
on you. Okay, let's try to get it outside to JT.

(10:42):
That doesn't work. Okay, we gotta throw it, get it
to Alec, guy who's making plays all over the place. Yeah,
and then to just be like, all right, we're just
gonna run a very simple zone lead here. I love
how Shane in that moment thought players not plays. We
don't need to get designery, we don't need to get cute.
Just his own read. If the linebacker crashes down, it
goes to our other best player. If he doesn't crash down,

(11:06):
it goes to our other best player. Right, touchdown. I guys,
you play conversion game. Both your thoughts on this one.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
At the end of the day, great win obviously, headed
into the bye week and then the Broncos afterwards, the
certing his playoff push. But stats don't lie, Learra, and
I'm starting with you. Twelve to twenty four, two touchdowns
through the air, nine carries for forty nine yards. I
mean that isn't exactly a whoa, look what happened here?
I want to start with the twelve of twenty four
for one oh nine.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
You know this needs to pick up.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
I know we're not gonna run the wheels off this guy,
but obviously I.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Like the fact that he's going.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
Back there twenty four times to chuck it up. We've
got to get better. We got to get over two
hundred yards. We got to get over two hundred fifty yards.
Any concern with the passing game with him right now.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
Well, I think you would have had that sat be
a lot more significant if there had been some critical
catches in certain situations. You know, you look across the
board and there are a couple of different situations in
which this game wouldn't even have been close if you'd
come up with some of those grabs that you really
could have had. And I do think that part of
this that will improve as you come out of the
bye week is the return of Josh Downs. He's gonna

(12:05):
be one of your most clutch guys moving forward. You know,
for this game in particular, it was really you know,
Michael Pittman Junior and Alec Pierce also you got to
throw you know, Moe in there had a big grab,
Drew Ogle Tree in situations. Will Mallory, like I thought
that the involvement of the tight ends was really encouraging
to see, you know, the way that Anthony was able
to spread around. But you know, there are some of

(12:27):
those things that are going to reflect on Anthony in
terms of oh, incompletions that when.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
You look at it, they were really well placed.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
Balls that unfortunately just didn't have the result that you
were going for in some of those sins.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
He returned from his two week benching, Anthony Richardson has
had seven passes be dropped. According your Pro Football Focus,
that's the second highest or third highest total nice in
the NFL over the last three weeks.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Okay, Jonathan Taylor from here on out, he's been quiet
the last three weeks before they went into New England.
So now we kind of got back into the mix
a little bit around that hundred yard mark. This guy,
I'm just saying this. I'm asking you as a dummy
up in the upper deck. If he's not running the ball,
if this offense isn't running the ball, it's a one
win seaton.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
It's a one game.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Season from here on out, in my opinion, the next
four after the bye week, if Jonathan Taylor is at
that thirty eight yard mark in the final stat book
and stuff, this team isn't winning.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
Am I am off? Am I off base? No? I don't.
I don't think so. I think you're you're still gonna
lean on him to be the kind of engine of
your your offense. And I thought he was. He was
a lot better. Sure, the line was better. I liked
how he ran downhill a couple of times in that game,
and you know, just hey, let's get four yards here,
just get an efficient gain on first down. But I

(13:40):
mean you're right, like, if if Denver is able to
hold Jonathan Taylor under fifty yards or so, that's a
tough proposition to go into that joint and win a
game that you need to win to stay in the
playoff race. I probably agree with you on that one.

Speaker 4 (13:53):
I thought we saw good patience though from him in
a couple of situations. Yeah, and when he let things,
he let things like really open up with that offensive line.
So it's going to be interesting, you know, to see
what you do. Now if some guys get healthier coming
out of the bibe, you have some guys back in
the rotation, what is his offense, right of course, and
then Tanner Bordolini as well, We'll see what's going on.
With Braden Smith after this. But one thing that we

(14:17):
learned was Tony Sperano does a really good job of
rotating guys in throughout the course of the week so
that all of even you know, your second tier guys
and your backup guys are getting some run with your
first team offense. And that has been such a critical factor,
I think for this offense moving forward with a number
of different combinations that you have had to use up front,

(14:39):
and something that really paid dividends when you got to
Sunday afternoon with the guys that you saw have significant
time in those situations with Danny and with Glow in particular,
because Matt had been up there with those guys.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
He had also been you know, starting at left.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Tackle right exactly.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
You guys practiced at the five offensive line position.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
There you go, which is a credit to Tony in
the preparation and a credit.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
To him too that you know that that's a lot
to load down to a rookie and he's really four
of the five.

Speaker 1 (15:05):
What didn't I'm gonna guess center, Yeah, he didn't. He
didn't snap the ball, so he was across the board everything.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
But I was talking to Bernard Ryman about mackenzol was
after the game, and he was just like, I know
how hard it is to be a rookie and play,
and he's like to play on both sides and to
not complain about it, to not bad and I to
not flinch. That speaks to like that dude's competitiveness. I
think the Colt's got a real player in McNett. Yeah,
for sure, guys, it's a I called it. You may
disagree with me. You may agree with me one game

(15:30):
season from here on out.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
We saw it last night. I want to talk about
the Denver Broncos game in the importance of that. Yeah, Coot,
bye week because we are on the road there.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
JJ.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
My My thing is this Colts fans, listen up. We
lose this game in Denver, You've got to hope for
a Wizard of Oz type of turnaround with the luck
of a thousand you know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
So you want you want to you want to play
that game real quick, because I've been working on it today. Sure,
I was just like, okay, out of curiosity. If the
Colts lose this game to Denver, they're three games back
of the Broncos with three games to play in Denver
the head to head tiebreaker. However, in the event of
a three way tie, three or more way tie among
nine and eight teams, the Indianapolis Colts will always prevail

(16:11):
out of that tiebreaker because of the conference tiebreaker. Hey
that's interesting. Now, Look you're talking about a Wizard of
Oz thing. You're to get a three way tie of
teams that are going nine to eight, you better be
rooting for the Dolphins. You'd better be rooting for I
guess the Bengals. You better be rooting for the Ravens
to collapse, the Chargers to collapse, the Broncos to collapse.
Let's not play that game. No, let's play the game.

(16:32):
If we beat the Broncos, then all we have to
do is be one game better than them down the
stretch or or or Jeffrey, we gotta be three games
better than the Houston Texas. Oh what don't stretch? Wait
wait wait wait wait?

Speaker 1 (16:44):
If they go one and three from here on out
and we go four and oh wait, win the division?

Speaker 2 (16:48):
Isn't that stupid? I mean not stupid, but isn't that
crazy to think I can well?

Speaker 4 (16:51):
One thing too to look at for Denver is the
stretch that they have in December. So obviously you have
the Colts first, but then they have to go to
the Chargers.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Yep, Thursday night.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
Play at Cincinnati.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (17:02):
You finish up the season at home against Kansas.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
City and also another team you should be rooting for
right now, the Buffalo bill Yeah, Buffalo Belts. You have
the heat on the Kansas City Chiefs because if that
game is for the one seed, Kansas City's not.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
He can't afford a rest game.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
No shot, You're gonna get some little Mahomes magic. He's
probably gonna scramble for forty five yards, gets shoved out
of bounds, get a fifteen yard penalty, and what whatever
kicker they have that week is going to hit a
game winning field goal or something like that. Love it.

Speaker 3 (17:27):
Oh, meanwhile, the uh.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
You want to talk about the Texans, That's.

Speaker 4 (17:30):
What that's exactly. So they have That's what I just
went to your reading my mind. We are locked in
right here, we're hitting our stride. We're playing her best
ball in December right here, JJ's tak of. It's all right.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
So Houston has the Dolphins at home this weekend. They
go on the road to the next week and they
got to buy this week. Oh excuse me, thank you
very much. Yes.

Speaker 4 (17:49):
So, coming out of the by, they're home against the Dolphins.
Then they go to Kansas City, They're at home against
the Baltimore work.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Days after playing the Chiefs on Christmas.

Speaker 3 (18:00):
And then they finished up with the Tennessee Titans.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
That's the Tennessee Titans who ended the Jacksonville Jaguars season
last year in very similar circumstances. I'm not saying. I'm
not saying the Colts are going to win the division.
But if the Colts, if the Colts go four and
oh and we beat Denver in two weeks, we might not.
You know, you know the line from Toy Story where
Buzz is like, we're not aiming for the truck. We're

(18:22):
not aiming for the truck, right, We're going to drop
into Andy's box and win the a FC South. I've
seen Toy Story probably one hundred times in the last to.

Speaker 3 (18:33):
Infinity is beyond and beyond is like, as far we're the.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
Truck, Okay, roll your eyes at me. The likes of
Bill Brooks, one of the Colts great too. I always
say this is a must win. He said, no, it's not.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
You're telling me, what's the old Marv Levy line. The
only must win was the World War two? Right, right, right?

Speaker 1 (18:48):
But but I'm just saying it's a one game season. Guys,
flipped the switch for me, Please flip the switch, Larra.
Want to start with you defensively, speaking against these Patriots,
there was some trending going on. There were some times
that it was, hey, boys, we need to step up
right here. I know Taekwon Lewis is back in the mix.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
Colt S ended up.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
With four sacks on the afternoon stuff, But hey, there
was some times that these guys and a young, healthy
quarterback who's got talent in Drake May, where are we
at with this defense going into what we're talking about
that you know, must win scenario for the next four weeks.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
Well, I thought you, you know, you gave too much
to ramondre Stevenson in that situation. They really built heavy
momentum off of that, and that created the opportunities for
Drake May.

Speaker 3 (19:27):
Drake May is gonna be a really good player.

Speaker 4 (19:29):
Yes, yes, he's gonna be a really very good He's
gonna be a problem for a lot of teams for
a long time. It looks like with what they're doing there,
So he was he was impressive. It was also you
know some of those plays to Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper.
There were some situations where it was those you know,
you would have these drives where the Patriots got into
the red zone and we're really effective in marching down

(19:50):
the field, and then the defense was able to make
some great stands, in particular Desire Franklin breaking up the pass,
Julian Blackman coming up with it.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
But yeah, also got bailed out by some holding penalty.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
Oh and you're not going to have that with Denver.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
You know, you cannot count on that.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
You cannot count on that.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Why do you say that? Guys? Why do you say it?

Speaker 1 (20:07):
Because on one side, I got a rookie coach on
on the other side, I got a twenty year coach
in Champayton.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
Is that the main Threa? Yeah, I think that Broncos
team is going to be more disciplined and if you
let them get in the red zone six times, they're
not going to get in the endzoneable twice.

Speaker 4 (20:19):
So I'm going to go to a note that I
have from DeForest Buckner from our conversations with him last week.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
And I noted this in.

Speaker 4 (20:27):
The radio broadcast, but there was a quote from DeForest
in which he talked about that we have played at
a high level.

Speaker 3 (20:33):
I'm gonna find it really quickly here we go.

Speaker 4 (20:36):
We need to do a better job with consistently playing
at a high level throughout the entire game. And what
he was kind of referring to was coming out of
the Detroit game, there were certain situations that you forced
them into some third lungs, but then they converted and
you weren't doing enough in the critical situations. You'd be
really good frustretch of time, and then you would let
up and allow them to capitalize in certain situations. So

(20:59):
for me, this is where like, okay, this is the
time to do that. As a defense.

Speaker 3 (21:04):
You've had flashes.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
Now you've gotten much healthier, you know, in the last
few weeks, getting some guys back, So now you have
to really capitalize on.

Speaker 3 (21:13):
What we're able to do. You're gonna have to come
up with some takeaways.

Speaker 4 (21:17):
You're gonna have to force Dender into some certain situations
in which you're able to And this is where I
noted this with Mate and Rick two.

Speaker 3 (21:25):
When this defense does come up with.

Speaker 4 (21:28):
Takeaway opportunities, you're going to have to capitalize on it
as an offense. And that's one thing that I think
we haven't seen quite enough of, is the offense be
opportunistic when the defense has come up in situations to
give the football, whether it's you know, takeaways, whether it's
stops on fourth down. Right, So those are different situations

(21:49):
that I was looking to in the last few days
where you're gonna have to be better defensive leave you're
gonna be able to make a run.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
What worried me is New England had a success rate
of forty six percent. That was the second highest of
any team in Week thirteen. This is a Patriots team
that over the course of the whole season, I can
pull it up real quick. So they had a forty
six percent success rate against the Colts this season, their
success rate is thirty two percent, so they and that's

(22:21):
twenty second in the NFL, So they they really and
success rate is like did you get four yards on
first down? Did you get four yards on second down?
And then did he convert the third down? You know
stuff like that. Did you get yardage that set you
up to get a fresh set of downs, or did
you just get a first down on a play and
it was almost at fifty percent. That's not sustainable for

(22:41):
this defense. The four yard runs that Weremander Stevenson, the
eight yard runs that they were getting, and then the
you know, the five yard completions on first down. The
ja's a lot of yards game there, it is. I mean,
that's a lot of yards. Now flick the switch.

Speaker 1 (22:54):
We're going into an offense led by Sean Payton Lera
and you know they're offensively speaking, they're much higher fire
power than the Patriots. That's a concern right now with
this defense. And I know what the Forest is talking about,
and I know those defense you know, well, we're starting
with Denver, every every receiver in Denver six 'y five.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
It seems like, yeah, right, guys, we gotta pick this up.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
And I want to ask you both, like coach me
up here, guys, we can't give up almost five hundred
yards in the next couple of games the next couple
of weeks to high power to low powered offenses. We
saw the Patriots do it. What's the biggest concern right
there to the backfield? Is it pressure on the front side.
I'm just saying we got to flip the switch.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
Gus Bradley, I think it's just tying everything in together,
like like Kenny Moore kind of talked about it yesterday,
where it's just sort of like we just got to
get like everyone a little more cohesive, a little more together,
a little a little more camaraderie, is what he said.
And like you see plays where the dean line gets
pressure but then the balls out quick. Yeah, and it

(23:50):
doesn't matter that laotu a lot to beat the guy
in front of him. It doesn't matter that you drew
up this great blitz that worked because the balls out
quick and you know, you're able to hit an easy
access throw. Or there are plays where you don't get
pressure and the defensive backs have to cover for you know,
a little bit too long and you're able to pick
out a guy who's open and find that the run
game stuff, you know, the Colt said, for the most part,

(24:12):
fix their run defense after those first two weeks, and
then it pops right back up here with the two
hundred yards. So it's kind of everything together. I don't
know if there's one aspect of this defense that you're like,
that's got to be better, that's got to be better.
That's the key to it. I think it's just everything
collectively coming out of the buy, every player on that
defense looking themselves in the mirror and saying, how can

(24:33):
I be better? That something Zire Franklin kind of talked
about like he's he said after the game, Look, if
five is gonna play like that, we got to be better. Yes,
And I think that's the message of that whole team.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
I think part of it is, like you know, tackling,
You've got to stop people when you get to them.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
I felt like against the Patriots.

Speaker 4 (24:47):
You saw guys get to them and then they were
able to break free from the defenders in a number
of different situations.

Speaker 3 (24:53):
I think you've got to go back a little bit
to what worked.

Speaker 4 (24:56):
And it's you know, I mean different offense, different team,
but how effective you early in that Jets game like
that was awesome, Like you put them back in their
heels early in the game. I think that that's a
similar type of script as to what you would like
to see in order to go into Denver and be
successful is avoid letting bo Nicks find that rhythm early on,

(25:18):
you know, try to stall them and make them really
have to earn it.

Speaker 3 (25:21):
Offensively, But yeah, it's gonna be a tough one can.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
Make that switch JJ and here, let me just set
a scenario.

Speaker 2 (25:26):
There are enough veterans here and Gus Bradley's been around
for long enough that they can let it.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
Let me set a scenario for you. Like I said,
you can't give up those chunk yards. Just just playoff football
in my eyes, last month of the season, just playoff football.
You've got the fire offensive firepower of the Broncos and
I'm gonna throw in the Jacksonville Jaguars there, depending on
the health of Trevor Lawrence. As you know, guys, he's
been a slayer of the Colts going twenty four of twenty.

Speaker 2 (25:47):
Six for you know, he's one of those guys. But
but I'm saying, like the Titans just put up thirty two.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
Yeah, and the Texas I understand it's like that, But
I'm saying like we need to have a playoff type
of a stat sheet from here on out. And it
starts with these Broncos and sewn and who is the
wizardry of him?

Speaker 2 (26:01):
Offensively? Like that? Are you concerned?

Speaker 1 (26:03):
And and is that a flip of the switch, like
you know, Tony Dungee did with Rob Morris kits for
old Colts fans when he placed a linebacker and there
and all of a sudden, different linebacker and they started
playing well JJ. I'm just saying, four hundred plus yards
of offense from the next four weeks on a consistent
basis isn't gonna get.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
Us where we want to. No, it's not. And I
do think back to Lara's point, though, you want to
see more complimentary football. You want to see, Hey, the
offense goes down and they score a touchdown, defense get
a three and out, or you know, and then defense
gets a three and out. Hey, offense go down and
score again, build a two score lead. The Colts have
barely operated with two score leads this year. It feels
like the last time they had one was I guess

(26:40):
they had it against the Jets and then New York
got back into that game. But before that it might
have been like Pittsburgh. I mean, it's been a while
and the Colts have not played with a lot of
those two score leads that happen when your offense scores,
your defense gets to stop. Your offense scores, defense gets
to stop, and you kind of build on it. It's kind
of been offense scores, the defense allows to score. Yeah,
and then offense gets a three and out. Defense gets

(27:02):
a three and out. Offense can't really pick it up,
you know it. It just hasn't been cohesive. The mesh
needs to happen, right, it does that, and that's how
you win playoff type games in December. I'm just a
guy in the upper deck. Hold on for a second.

Speaker 1 (27:17):
We have three of the top five tacklers in the
National Football League in Nick cross E j speedens Ire Franklin.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
Is it still top five after last week? Let me
pull it up real quick.

Speaker 1 (27:25):
Well, I'll cover my bases a top ten. These three
guys in the top ten, Learra, is that a concern?
These are great football players that it'd start on any team.

Speaker 2 (27:34):
I'm not saying there the top four.

Speaker 1 (27:36):
By the way, three of the top four. Is that
a direct thing of time of possession? These guys aren't
leading leaving the field? Yes? Or is this like, hey,
I know they're damn good football players, but guys, we
have three in the top four.

Speaker 3 (27:46):
Right, I think that?

Speaker 4 (27:47):
I mean, yeah, you want to see that be a
little more distributed throughout right, It's it's you've got a
couple of guys who are that kind of all.

Speaker 3 (27:52):
Feasting in those situations. I think you want to.

Speaker 4 (27:54):
Get more of that pressure up front because you're getting
too deep into your defense for a lot of these situations.
You know, where those guys are making the stops right
to your last line of defense back there, so be
more effective kind of at the line of scrimmage.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
Right up there in the trenches is a factory.

Speaker 2 (28:08):
The Colts have also faced more plays than any team
in the NFL eight hundred and seventy three. The next
highest is Denver at eight hundred and forty three. So
we're talking about we're talking about a lot of plays
the Colts defense has been on the field for and
those guys have to make the plays. Yeah, you know,
I don't I don't want to diminish that you've got
three guys with over one hundred and fifteen tackles, But

(28:29):
at some point, like you, you would like to just hey,
maybe we don't have to make ten tackles on this drive.
We just get off the field on you know, third down,
or we don't have to make a bunch of tackles
because the offense that we're facing us to throw it
a bunch now because we have a two score lead,
you know something like.

Speaker 1 (28:45):
That, right right, Well, guys, this bye week is gonna come,
I mean for both of both of you guys as
well as this football team. If you can give me
your thoughts on how important a bye week is late
in the year where we're at right now? Do you
like the timing of this? Obviously it's here and now,
so we're like, thank goodness, but could we have used
it six?

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Oh my god? I think yeah.

Speaker 4 (29:02):
I mean because when you look at a lot of
other teams, you at least got like a Thursday night game.

Speaker 2 (29:07):
Every other team that does a Week six by had
a Thursday night game except for the Colts.

Speaker 1 (29:11):
Every other team that had a Week six by.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
No, sorry that does a Week fourteen by had a
Thursday night game. So that would be That would be
the Ravens, Texans, Patriots, Broncos, and Commanders all played on
Thursday night, so they had that little mini by to
get a little bit of rest. You do a little
bit extra self, scout. Colts have not had that. It's

(29:35):
been every Sunday for the last thirteen weeks. Well, it's
your schedule this week? What does Shane do with his players?

Speaker 4 (29:40):
Talk to him about that for Culture sixty this week,
he gave guys the entire week off. So now that
means that there are no meetings anything like that. Guys
have been in the building, they're getting treatment, they're doing
certain things. And also while they have been given the
command to obviously rest, you know, enjoy some more in
a get away if maybe that's what you want to do,

(30:02):
you're also to a degree staying you know, a little
bit locked in. You still want to be you know,
staying up on things, refreshing yourself, going back and looking
things over. So, yes, it is a week away, but
it is not a week completely off. You're still gonna
stay on top of a lot of those type of things.
I know that some of the guys you know, got
out of town, which is always good to have a
change of scenery, whether it's you go someplace warm, uh

(30:25):
to just kind of kick back for two or three days,
or you go and you visit family, whatever you need
to do. This is a recharge completely for this team
because you know the stakes that they are. You've had
to fight so hard to put yourself in a position
to play meaningful football easy this year, You've had no
easy wins.

Speaker 3 (30:43):
You've not been able to breathe.

Speaker 4 (30:44):
This is so needed. But then also, don't do anything to,
you know, be a detriment to how hard you've had
to work to get to this point.

Speaker 1 (30:51):
All right, guys, let's have some fun a little bit.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
It's getting towards the end of the year.

Speaker 1 (30:54):
Pro Bowl and all Pro voting. You'll come out Pro Bowl.
Let's just stick the Pro Bowl right now. Obviously the
writers aren't the ones, but we're loaded. We talked about,
you know, three of the top four tacklers in this league.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
Where the horseshoe.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
I'm saying, like this, is it too early to talk
about some Pro Bowl nominations from this roster and who
you would like to see and why?

Speaker 2 (31:13):
All right, but let's start with Zira Franklin. He should
have been in the Pro Bowl last year, isn't He
might break his own tackle record again. I think he
needs forty four fitting. Yeah, he'll get that. I think
he should be there. I think Quentin Nelson should absolutely
be back in that discussion. Really yeah. I think Bernard

(31:33):
Raymans had a really good season. I don't know if
he'll get there because he missed some time. But like
I would, I would put Bernie up against a lot
of left tackles in the AFC. Let's see who else?
Who else should we talk about here?

Speaker 3 (31:44):
Quin Nelson?

Speaker 2 (31:44):
Yeah, I got the other side of the ball. Buck
Buck always should be you know, since he missed time,
he's probably a little a little up against it, right call.

Speaker 4 (31:54):
I would love at some point broke Grover's start to
get the nod that he deserves in the Pro Bowl.

Speaker 2 (31:59):
Like, it's gonna be tough because the run defense is now,
But like, I don't know what, like the Colts on
off stats are with Grover Stewart on the field versus
off field. But I bet when he's on the field
it's pretty good. So yeah, I mean he should. It's just,
you know, it comes down to sacks. And there's so
many good dtackles in the NFL, and we know how
good Grove is. We know he would be, you know,

(32:20):
deserving of that. But when you've got Quinn Williams and
Chris Jones and you know, all these star defensive tackles,
especially in the AFC, especially one on his own team,
you know, it's probably gonna be a little tough for him.
How about Rego. Is he in a discussion?

Speaker 3 (32:37):
Interesting, I don't know. I don't know much.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
About you know, I haven't looked into the rest of
the punters in the NFL. That's that's a laten seas,
that is a lateness. See. Okay, all right, hold on,
let's let's do this right here. He's gonna draw it up.
This is why we got our computers in front of us, Jeffrey.
Let's see qualifying leaders. Let's go to punting. All right,
net punting, Ava Ridge. Rego is eighth, but he has

(33:05):
twenty two inside the twenty that's seventh. Let's see touchbacks.
Four touchbacks, not that many. That's pretty good. Yeah. Sure,
he's right in the mix. Yeah, put him in the mix.
He's in the mix. Okay, Hego's in the mix. He
we can definitively say Rigo Sanchez is seven a good year,
right right?

Speaker 1 (33:21):
Oh yeah, okay, Well we just uh, we're gonna find
out who who happens to go to the Pro Bowl.
Obviously it's not in Hawaii anymore. But I just wanted
to talk about this bye week, the importance of it
for the team, which we touched on and Shane Sykeen
and guys getting away from football.

Speaker 2 (33:35):
How about you two? How about you too?

Speaker 1 (33:38):
And the reason I say that is you had a
nice weekend. I heard before we went on the air
here we talked about the great tradition of going to
Churchill Downs in Louisville at the day after Thanksgiving.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
That's awesome, that's incredible.

Speaker 1 (33:49):
But you know, time to get away in this week.
Obviously we're working here, but we will have a shorter
week and stuff like that. Guys, your bye week plans
that you're as important as his football team.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
You're covering them all right. So here, here's what like.
Whenever I explain my job to other people, you know,
they're like, oh, it's so much fun. That's it's cool
you do that. It's like it's still a job, but
it consumes you. Like it's this constant thought. I am
constantly thinking about the Colts in the NFL, and just like,
how can I talk about this? How can I write

(34:18):
about this? How can we you know? What does this mean?
What does that mean? And I'm still because I I
like it. I'm still going to watch football Thursday night.
It's a great game this week Packers and Lions. Sunday Night,
Chiefs Chargers gonna be some good games this week. But
like I'm just I just need to take like a
mental break from thinking about football for a little bit.

(34:41):
That's how That's how I'm gonna recharge. On top of that,
I'm not gonna have many opportunities to think about football
because it is Henry and Charlie's fifth birthday.

Speaker 1 (34:51):
Follow Betsy's lead on that, you please. Yeah, she's a
good bye week, you know, leader of stuff. Kind of
leads you along a little bit.

Speaker 2 (34:58):
Oh yeah, you know, well, well you know, I'm I'm
a willing participant, of course, but you zoned in on
football for you know, twenty weeks out of there, like
right now, you're getting a break offs. Yeah, it'd be fun,
it'll be it'll be fun. We're gonna do a little
like Ninja Zone party people over at the house and
then got breakfast with Santa on Sunday. So that's a
big deal. Got to tell the big guy who who

(35:20):
we want for our Pacers jerseys that we're gonna get
this year. Yeah, so that's gonna be key. See a
guy delivers on that exciting give me some with you
and talker. I know it's something. Something's got to be happening.

Speaker 4 (35:29):
I'm actually gonna be at the Big Ten championship game.
I'm going back to Lucas Oil STANDI.

Speaker 2 (35:35):
I gotta take a break from football. I'm just gonna
go to a football game. Honestly, no, sounds sounds like fun. Yeah,
that is fun. I know. I initially, what's the secondary
market looking like like our Oregon fans traveling? I don't know.
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (35:49):
That's a great I have not I'm not really.

Speaker 2 (35:50):
Any direct flights from Portland to Indy. Actually there are.

Speaker 4 (35:56):
Some actually if you're willing, if you're willing to go
to get the Alaska Airlines note to you ducks out there,
Yes there are some. There are some flights direct from
Portland to Indianapolis. Yeah, secondary market, that's really interesting. But
also when I made these plans, I was like, all right,
I'm gonna will the Hoosiers into it, you know.

Speaker 3 (36:14):
So I was really think it was gonna happen.

Speaker 2 (36:15):
Might be a good thing. They didn't make it.

Speaker 4 (36:16):
Yeah, it's all gonna play out the way that it should.

Speaker 3 (36:20):
But yeah, very excited to be there.

Speaker 4 (36:22):
We have like I'm sure we'll probably do something like
Friday night, maybe go grab dinner and just hang. But
I have some friends coming in town to cover the
game as well, who I don't often get to see
because they're all West Coast based, so they're coming in
and so get looking forward to catching up with it
with some of those friends as well, maybe do a
little Christmas shopping.

Speaker 3 (36:41):
On Sunday, I had this I think to.

Speaker 2 (36:43):
Speak on a West coast coming in for this. I
had this thought on Saturday. I was watching a little
of the Notre Dame USC game and it was like
CBS Big ten and I was like, if you screenshoted
this to me and sent it to me ten years ago,
i'd be like, Wow, Notre Dame finally took the plunge. Yeah,
finally in the big ten. And I was like, no,
it's actually us. What's happening?

Speaker 3 (37:01):
What is I don't I know? I was.

Speaker 4 (37:03):
I was kind of confused when I saw that too,
because I think it was like Jenny Dell was doing
the interviews.

Speaker 3 (37:08):
And I was like, wait, hold on, CBS a big ten, and.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
Wait, CBS is a big ten. That's already yes, disorienting
for me.

Speaker 3 (37:14):
Yeah, and that's Marcus Freeman and I'm like, I'm really
perplexed here.

Speaker 2 (37:17):
So all right, guys, well that's our bye week.

Speaker 1 (37:20):
It's a little hit and run of a show today
because we got to have some R and R for
this football team and as well as the media members
that are covering this team. But it's going to be
picking up in full one hundred mile an hour next
Monday when these guys get back into the building. And
I've said it before, and you can disagree with me
or not, it's a one game season from here on out.
Each week this is a do or die game. This
is the season making game for the Colts. If it

(37:42):
does happen, they get the victory down there, they continue
to trud john against some not great football teams, but
always interesting facing the division opponents that are coming up.
So fingers are cross. Colts dot Com has the latest.
It's gonna be a little bear this week, a little
bearer than usual this week.

Speaker 2 (37:55):
Jay, Yeah, I mean we got you know, I got
a playoff scenarios story. Not gonna be day if you
if you didn't read five Colts Things that's up on Mondays,
that's got some meaty stuff in it. Wednesday, I'm gonna
have a little look at what's coming up on the
bye week and then Thursday is when we kind of
close up shop, close up shop for a minute. Stuff.

Speaker 1 (38:13):
It's gonna be a fun run watching number five and
the Colts do what they have to do.

Speaker 2 (38:17):
We've seen one other thing to kind of put a
cap on this. Whether the Colts make the playoffs or
not this year, this is great experience for Anthony Richardson
playing in a game when it when he goes to Denver,
playing in a game with those implications, that is going
to be great experience. He is going to be a
better football player for that game. The Colts win, whether

(38:39):
they lose it, He's going to be better for a
pressure packed stretch run.

Speaker 1 (38:43):
He hasn't had what's on the line as deep as
this game is in his career six and six. I mean,
you know you're you're talking about playoffs in the NFL.
That is a big deal to just make the playoffs.
So this this is going to be a very important
stretch for his overall development over the next five ten
years as an NFL player, and this game could be

(39:03):
the start of that thing right here against the Broncos.
I know you're looking forward to it. Knock on wood
wherever it is around here, tap tap tap, It's not
eight feet of snow when you guys are traveling there.
And hopefully we saw the game last night. It was
like thirty five degrees and no snow anywhere. So I'm
not going on wood again on that. I hope it goes,
but I want to play a little thing with these two.
You get to know him a little bit better. And
this bye week is a perfect and I call this one.

(39:24):
You guys have no idea what I'm talking about, but
don't worry.

Speaker 2 (39:26):
It's not scary.

Speaker 1 (39:27):
I would say, that's kind of your answer, all right,
like this, and I'm gonna start with Learra Overton.

Speaker 2 (39:32):
First.

Speaker 1 (39:34):
These are all football topics sort of okay, and remember
you would answer that with I would say, okay, is
Kurt Signetti the best football coach in the history.

Speaker 2 (39:45):
Of the Hoosier Spicy? This is good? Is he the best?
Is here?

Speaker 3 (39:51):
People say Lee Corso has something.

Speaker 2 (39:53):
To say why. I don't want to debate it, but
I'm saying, like.

Speaker 4 (39:59):
It's one season. That's a legacy off of one season.

Speaker 2 (40:03):
That's true.

Speaker 1 (40:04):
I've been having this discussion last two days, obviously with
Matt Taylor Boyce.

Speaker 2 (40:07):
The golts. Yeah, you know him.

Speaker 1 (40:08):
He flies his IU flags and everything. He says, absolutely
without question, what this man has done in one year,
put him in a position to rank his highest five,
put him in the college football playoffs.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
He loves he loves Corso. I was Mallory and everything.
He said.

Speaker 1 (40:20):
This guy is head and shoulders above and has done
it in one year. And I'm like, whoa, I'm scratching
my head a little bit. I go, I'm gonna ask
l on that one.

Speaker 4 (40:26):

There is no better football player in the history of
Missoo football.

Speaker 2 (41:02):
Who is that man? Daniel Well Kellen Winslow, Ellen Winslow Senior.
We're gonna be the case. I see. I'm trying to
think back, Like, let's get some of the old guys
in there. That's a good old guy to get though. Jeremy,
Jeremy Macklin. Okay, Jeremy Macklin. Really good player, Philly, we
remember him. I mean from just being in college. You

(41:26):
got Brad Smith. Brad Smith was a good NFL player too.
Michael Sam had a year, Michael Sam was a defensive
Player of the Year. Really good football player. Sheldon Richardson,
you remember him. Yeah, he's a Massoo guy. But it's
Chase Daniel.

Speaker 1 (41:40):
Okay, Lara, the same thing to you. I was a
hes final, Lara, who's that? Who's the best player to
ever wear?

Speaker 2 (41:47):

Thompsons you're probably thinking of Yeah, I mean, like I'm
thinking from from my viewing of IU football, I'm gonna
go Anton Randall, well like that in my era of.

Speaker 1 (42:15):
Who is the finest football player to ever wear the
golden colors of Notre Dame.

Speaker 2 (42:20):

Zach Martin just a dominant player.

Speaker 2 (42:27):
Hall of famer. Yeah, hall of famer. Guy's awesome. He's
such a good football player. He's such a technician. Like
also also the fact that Notre Dame went from the
hold on Yeah, okay, what he got?

Speaker 1 (42:37):
What you compare him to fifty six? Compare him to.

Speaker 2 (42:41):
Fifty now, Quentin Nelson's gonna be a really good football player.
I know that the course of his whole career. Zach
Martin's been doing it for a decade and he is
a walk in first ballot Hall of Famer in mind. Okay,
so that's good one. That's that's what Nelson might get there,
Yeah he might, he might. I also like from the
time I covered them, I throw Harrison Smith in there.
He was awesome. He's another guy should be a Hall
of Famer.

Speaker 1 (42:59):
He is.

Speaker 2 (43:01):
Just a guy who was like awesome to watch play.
When I covered Notre Dame. Is will Fuller remember him?
He was awesome? He was so much fun. He's youngster's
got to remember the like s of Timmy Brown, who
was back there and doing things. Yeah, I mean like
you got you know, you can go all the way
back all the Heisman winners. You know, I covered Mantiteo.
He was great there. That true. Also, I think about
this all the time, and I thought about it last

(43:21):
night when I was watching the Broncos game. Is that
you could having a NFL Like when I covered Notre Dame.
You could go left tackle Ronnie Stanley, left guard Quinton Nelson.
Center would be Nick Martin, Fisher's guy, Zach Martin's brother
who was the second round pick of the Texans, really
good football player. You could go right guard Zach Martin.

(43:44):
And you could go right tackle Mike McGlinchey. Oh mcginch
played last night. McGlinchey the best offensive line in the NFL.
At is that right?

Speaker 1 (43:50):
It is?

Speaker 2 (43:51):
He is the best offensive line in the NFL in
like twenty nineteen, twenty twenty, right, And it's like not
even close. I love it. I love it all right.
She's just been around great offensive This is what you
get in the bye week.

Speaker 1 (44:01):

greatest football players in IU history. Lara, I appreciate the time.

Speaker 2 (44:09):

the table and get in there. Knock on wood, we
can still win this division. I know I'm talking crazy
