Speaker 1 (00:17):
Welcome into tag Dan today. I'm Pinnannie Stevens, Brian Sexson,
and John Osier are with me. I hope you all
had a very enjoyable long weekend. But back to action
here at the Eve Miller Electric Center. OTA's are going
to kick off again later this afternoon. OTA number four
out of ten. But an eventful weekend for the first
round draft pick. Let's start out with our big thing,
number one, which is another one, a very monumental day.
(00:38):
We want to give congratulations to Travis Hunter and his
new wife, Leanna, who got married over the weekend. But
an eventful month for Travis Hunter overall because getting drafted
into the NFL. He's the first person in his family
to graduate from college, turned twenty two.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
And then he got married.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Friend, it's a lot of life events in one. We're
putting a ton of pressure on him to play both
sides of the football. But if anybody's up for it,
I think it might be him.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Well, you know, somebody at the draft told me that
this kid loves football and he loves fishing. So he's
cleared all the decks for everything he needed to get done, graduating,
getting married, getting drafted, getting acclimated.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
I guess there's another one. John.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
He's got to get his contract done, but it appears
that that's just a formality at this point in today's
day in.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Age of the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
But he's clear the decks Ky Now all of a sudden,
he can focus on his new wife for the next
couple of weeks and then training camp rolls around.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
It's all about football.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Well, the best player in franchise history came in here,
Tony Besselli, and get married a couple weeks later, So
maybe as a formula works. I'm sure others have done it.
It was it was cool to sort of go through
on social media and see Travis's big day, nothing but
the best. So it's it's uh, I'm I'm waiting for
my car. You know he's beginning comes at this point. Yes,
(01:49):
so you know I'm available. I'm in the MEC all
the time.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
I'll let him know. Let's go through some of our
other big things, which are some of the changes we
saw at the NFL meetings. So some things change. One
of the big changes are one thing that I'm interested
in at least is that NFL players are going to
be allowed to play in flag football in the Olympics
represented the United States if they're chosen for the team. So, John,
if you were gonna pick one of the Jaguars to
play flag football for the USA, who do you think
(02:15):
your chick?
Speaker 4 (02:16):
The The old cynic in me would say none. That's
why these guys getting hurt. So I'll just I'll put
that aside, because I'm sure they are administrators and coaches
thinking that way. You know, I'm gonna say maybe Travis
Hunter because of the two way element, you know, and
(02:37):
because of the of the dynamic element. There are certainly
guys on this team who have the speed and the
quickness to play that game. I don't know much about
how flag football look in the Olympics.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
I know it'll look better than when I played.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
It just a little bit.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Well, it won't be played in the sand. Anybody remember
the name of Robert Edwards. It'll be played on turf.
And so from that perspective of the NFL's said, go ahead,
I'll take Brian Thomas Junior because he did play so
well at the Pro Bowl games in January.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
Very good call.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
I think speed and just getting around some of the
flags and pulling that's probably a good call. Some things
will stay the same though, as we saw they voted
they were trying to ban the push. They didn't get
enough votes. The Jaguars voted to keep the tust push,
probably because they stopped it a couple of times this year,
even though they didn't win that game. Another change that
did not happen Brian, was they're not doing the receding
(03:27):
in the playoffs. They talked about maybe if you win
your division but you don't have the best record, you
wouldn't get a home game, but they haven't done away
with that yet. That seems like something that may come
up again.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Though you know, the NFL is loathed to change.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
They for years talked about eliminating the kickoff or finding
a different way to execute the kickoff, and it wasn't
until recently last year that they went ahead.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
And made the change.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
I expect that this is going to happen at some
point in time. It just seems coming down the road.
All the other things that have happened just take more time.
It won't have happen maybe for two or three more years,
but eventually they'll get there.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Yeah, I don't think they'll reced because I think owners
and people involved with the league. Want there to be
a real prize that comes with winning the division and
getting the playoffs. Yes, that's a prize, but I think
owners who ultimately decide this like having that home playoff
(04:24):
game as they cared for in the division.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
And it's it's been talked about before. I remember this
being talked about back in five or six. I think
it always sounds great when it's talked about on social media,
but once after it comes down to a vote, these
guys don't wan to change.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Yeah, but here's the change though we saw last week
with Bob Ursay's passing.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Does get Bob, but sorry, Bob was his dad. You know.
Now his daughter is running the show.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
And Bob McNair's passed a few years ago in Houston
and his son is running show. And I think over
time you'll see some of the kids, some of the
family members, maybe some of the private equity firms that
are getting involved have.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
A bit of a say, we'll see.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
I don't want to see it change because I like
you like the value of the rivalries, but this league
is changing fast and over time.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
I think it might something to keep an eye on
for sure. Stay with us here on Jagzam. We're gonna
look around the division before we get to training camp,
see what everyone else is doing. We're gonna check out
what's up with the Cults after the break. Jag Zam
Today brought to you by Fresh from Florida. It is
always in season. You welcome you back here. As the
(05:39):
Jaguars are in the middle of OTZ right now, I
figured it was kind of time to check in on
what's going around going on in the division because we've
got three more weeks until we take a little bit
of a break before training camp. So let's talk about
the three other teams. So checking in with the Colts.
Obviously we mentioned a little bit earlier, but owner Jim
ursa passing away. John, I know you worked there for
some time. Hearing that news and kind of hearing all
(05:59):
this stories coming out, You're familiar with what was going
on and just kind of that blow that they're dealing
with now.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
Yeah, I left the Colts fifteen years ago, so I
knew Jim for ten years, from one to about twenty ten. Look,
it'll be a blow for the franchise because he was
beloved by players, coaches.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
He was a football guy.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
He had a lot of influence when I was there
over President Bill Pollian being hired, Tony Dune being hired.
He had a lot of say in Peyton Manning's drafting.
So his football expertise that he developed when he was
growing up and working as a GM, working in a
lot of facets of the organization helped him to be
a good owner. I don't really know that much the
(06:43):
last fifteen years. My understanding is the daughters have taken
more and more ownership.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
If you will, and leading the organization.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Carly Will, I believe, takeover running the team's been doing
it for about ten or eleven years. They've been transitioning
to that for while. I don't expect, you know, and
I'm talking way out of turns. I haven't been around for.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
A long time.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
I wouldn't expect the day to day and the spirit
of that organization to change much with Jim's passing.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
But rest of peace, Jim ares.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
I read somewhere that Jim Ursay made Indianapolis a football town.
It had been the Pacers, it had been basketball, it
had been the Indy five hundred.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
You agree with it, No, Peyton made India football town.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Okay, fair enough, let's talk a little bit about the
quarterback competition in Indianapolis, because that's going to be the
story for them. A lot of this year will be
Anthony Richardson, who had his ups and downs so far,
haven't seen a ton of them just due to injury
and then some of his other issues on the field
kind of getting benched and coming back. But now with
Daniel Jones in the house as well, it'll be a
(07:45):
little bit of a competition.
Speaker 5 (07:46):
Brian.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Yeah, Daniel Jones obviously a more accomplished passer, but I
remember Daniel Jones from a couple of years ago when
he came in here beat the Jaguars with his.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
Legs running all over the field. This guy is an enigma.
I mean, he's he's got everything you could want.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
He's the height, the length, speed, power, but he can't
stay healthy. So just based on what we've seen from
his first two years in the NFL, I would say
Daniel Jones is sitting in the catfert scene.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
Yeah, if Anthony Richardson turns it on, he's got a chance.
Speaker 5 (08:18):
To be a start to be very good.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
But that's always been the sentence associated with him and
he hasn't done it yet. So It's a smart move
by the Colts to have somebody ready. I would think
Anthony Richardson gets every chance, probably wins the job because
of the draft status and the talent, but can he
be on the field and canny play well?
Speaker 5 (08:37):
So smart move by the Colts.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
It feels like this is one of those years that
for them that they do this just to make sure
and then they have to move on next year.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
That's the vibe. But maybe Ar proves that different.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Well, And I don't know that they have the surrounding
cast for Daniel Jones that Sam Darnold had in Minneapolis
last year, but he could be this year's Where did
this guy come from?
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Yeah, someone in their second spot kind of getting reinventing
themselves a little bit.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
So I'm sure we've seen he see that.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Yeah, and one of those new weapons he got in
the draft they drafted. They went for Tyler Warren the
tight end for their first round pick. Ryan, you were
at the draft, you got to speak to some of
these guys. What did you hear from him and.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
What did you see?
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Well, I didn't get a chance to talk to him
as much as I got a chance to see him
and listen the guy has this interesting He's tall and
he's long, and he's athletic, and everyone makes the comparison
to the great tight ends in the game, Rob Lenkowski,
who I know you covered, and Travis Kelce and the
way that he was used by Penn State and their
(09:40):
new offensive coordinator last year, guy named Andy Kolonecki. They
used him in so many different ways. When you see
him and you see the length that he has and
just the body style, he's going to be a matchup
nightmare for a lot of people because you're going to
get a smaller safety or a bigger linebacker that's going
to have to cover him, and he looks like a
(10:00):
mismatch for no matter who is across from them.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
Yeah, he'll be very interesting.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Tight end's taken that high and sort of as the
chosen ones haven't.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
Always fared that well.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
Brock Bauer sort of broke that trend as a guy
who you could feature into the offense. I expect Tyler
Warren to be that guy and it certainly helps Anthony
Richardson if he is quickly.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Absolutely all right, stay with us. We're gonna come back
through some ozone mail bag questions. We answer questions from
the fans, move the freight, Move the freight. Magellan Transport
voted the coolest office space in Jacksonville. You can apply
online at Magellanlogistics dot com. I got to check in
(10:48):
with the OSA wise John Oser about some of these
fan questions we have. We're gonna check in with Greg
fran Jacksonville. First off, he says, do you think it
is possible for a player like Travis Hunter who will
go both ways? Supposedly and Rookie of the Year honors
on both offense and defense? Are those awards fan based
like the Pro Bowl? Or is that strictly tiers and
lead voting.
Speaker 5 (11:06):
Well, it's funny, Brian, when every people talk about awards.
Many organizations give out these awards. The most prominent Rookie.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
Of the Year vote is the AP vote, which is
usually the most prominent of the votes. That's writers doing it.
There is a offense and a defense. There's no reason
why Travis Hunter, if he performs on both sides of
the ball, couldn't be both. It would be amazing if
he was. And then there's others. You know, it's very
(11:37):
little peer voting in that among the more exclusive or exclusive,
one of the more prestigious Sporting news has one, pfw
A has one.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
But could he do it?
Speaker 4 (11:50):
Yeah, for the ones that have offense and defense, there's
no reason he couldn't be voted that well.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
He'd have to play at an incredible level.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Yeah, I mean, it's so hard, and I don't want
to tamp down people's expectations too much, although I think
they're doing a job with it by focusing his time
on offense and talking about how they're going to work
him in on defense. But the level of performance that
it would take for a guy to play at the
highest level at receiver and at corner, I just I
(12:16):
can't get my brain wrapped around it because it takes
it takes rookies time to figure out where they're supposed
to be and when they're supposed to be there. Kay,
let alone you know what time we eat and what
time the bus shows up, and to master their their
craft at a high of a level at one position.
Now we're talking too, could he? I don't know. I
(12:38):
think who are asking a lot.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
I think it might be tough on the defensive side
of the football, just because of the amount of snaps
he may get will be limited less than offense. And
then also I feel like with the defensive player of
the awards sometimes can edge towards, you know.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
Edge players because you have sacks.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
You can look at a specific stats. Sometimes, you know,
pass breakups and things like that aren't as impressive unless
you have the interception numbers. So that'll be something to keep.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
The spirit of the question was is it possible? Certainly, sure,
it's possible he would. He would probably have to get
a pick six or two, get some points and get
people talking about him. I think the other reason he
would have a theoretical chance is he's coming in so
high profile, and often that award is sometimes it doesn't
(13:21):
necessarily go to the most deserving, it goes to the
most high profile some of these awards. So if he
were to have the great offensive numbers that people expect
him to have and a couple of pick sixes, he
could get that sort of award. But you know, let's
hope that the conversation is real in December.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
You take one, I mean you'd take one.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
I'll take any pick sixs that are available. This one
is a term I hear a lot. So Christoph Fleming
island ozone. Are we winning the off season again?
Speaker 4 (13:49):
Yeah, I kind of laughed when I was answering this question.
I guess I don't know what this means anymore. I
feel like they had, you know, I feel like if
you ask Jaguars people, meaning James Gladstone, the people involved
putting the off season together, I would think they felt
like they won. Usually when people talk about winning the
off season, it becomes sort of, you know, it's a
(14:11):
little bit of a sarcasta hang, oh, we won the
off season, we.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
Couldn't win the regular season.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
I didn't feel like it was that sort of off season, Brian,
where they were trying to go win and trying to
get headlines.
Speaker 5 (14:22):
So I don't feel like it's that.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
I feel like there's some profile to this off season
because of Travis Hunter, and that's the energy. I feel
like it's a good off season, but I don't know
if it deserves the Oh they won the off season,
they because to me, winning the off season means being stupid.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
I mean spending ridiculous amounts of money in free agency,
which we've done around here.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
And I don't think that was the spirit of this offseason.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
No, it wasn't anything like twenty seventeen. And listen, twenty seventeen,
they won the Yeah, twenty twenty three, twenty seventeen.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
They won the off season. Then they won in the season.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
But in every other year where they went out and
spent incredible amounts of money, they didn't think it was
just pointing.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
So here's how they won the off season.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
They brought the fan base back at the end of
last year when they fired the coach and kept the
GM and everybody was just done and threw their hands up,
and you know, where is this thing going. Well, from
the time that they made the change and hired Liam
and Tony and James Gladstone and then went and spent
what I thought was very prudently in free agency and
(15:24):
then made the move to get Travis Hunter. So in
that sense, they absolutely have won the off season. Because
I don't know about you guys, but everywhere I go,
people are excited for the season, can't wait for the season.
I mean, we're standing in line at publics wherever you
are on the beach on Memorial Day. Everyone wants to
talk about this team. And none of us felt like
that was going to be the case when the season.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Ended last year.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
It's true, all right, And finally Keith from Titusville, Florivan,
wants to talk about the safeties. He says, I feel
like the depth of the safety position is not being
talked about enough. Eric Murray, Darnell Savage, Antonio Johnson, Taylor Bransaw,
Andrew Winger, Rayon Lane and Daniel Thomas. How many safeties
do you think the team will keep?
Speaker 4 (16:00):
I think it's deep. I think the question is is
it great? I think they think they moved to improve it.
I think they showed you what they thought of last
year's safeties by going out and getting Eric Murray, by
drafting two, I mean they knew this was a position
they had to be overhauled. I think it will be seen,
you know, it remains to be seen if it's deep
(16:22):
and as good as they want it. I think it's
a position and transition.
Speaker 5 (16:30):
I would expect Dewey.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
I mentioned him first, Caleb brand Saw and Eric Murray
expect to start. I expect Dewey and Rayon Lane to
have key roles. After that, we'll see what happened.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
Passay, you're going to have five because Daniel Thomas is
one of your best special teams performers and has been
for a number of years, so you're not going to
move him off the roster, especially with Heath Farwell sticking
around as the special teams coordinator.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
So I would say five.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
I think we may see rayon lane and doing a
lot of special teams as well. I know he's done
that in college. That's something to keep an eye on.
But I think more than anything, just different from last year.
Speaker 5 (17:05):
Week.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
Yeah, it would be great.
Speaker 5 (17:07):
Stay with here.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
I'll tell you what's coming up.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
The rest of the.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
Week mentioned an eventful month for Travis Hunter. But how
about this kid practicing football outside his house. Travis Hunter
just walks up pretty nice surprise, And I love that.
(17:29):
We just have all these videos. We have Travis on
the plane talking to an older lady helping her with
her bags, and everyone's just having a Travis Hunter run
in around Jacksonville. And he's gonna be good here.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
I can tell he is all typic to people who
have met him, they understand that this is just who
he is. This is not contrived. Forget all the cameras
that are always following him around.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
That's just the world he lives in. He is the
real deal.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
I think he likes people, and it seems and everybody's
like this, I don't care about this. He likes making
other people happy, so it's okay. Yeah, I mean, and
it's cool to see it seems very genuine. Sometimes when
you talk about a guy's character, and when James Glasman
talks about lifting an organization, the old cynic in me
(18:14):
is like, that didn't really happen.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
This kid's the real deal. It's fun to be around.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
Just what do what you guys think?
Speaker 2 (18:20):
If there's so much attention on him, much more than
he had even at Colorado with Deon Sanders and that crew,
you just wonder how the pressure of performing at this level,
all the two way talk, the question that we got earlier.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
I get the spirits. Could he win both?
Speaker 2 (18:38):
But there will be some conversations, you know, if he
goes out and has a great game on both sides
of the ball. I just I wonder how he deals
with it, if it's pressure or if his personality is
just such that it just doesn't bother.
Speaker 5 (18:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
I think so far he's had such success that he'd
probably he had many big deal The question will become
adversity in the NFL, which usually even for great rookies happens.
How he deals with that, but that is the question
that you ask of most rookies when they come into
the NFL. So uh, he'll have more attention on it,
but I think he's used to that.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Sure, he'll be back on the field with his teammates today, John,
your favorite OTAs continue. I love it, best time of here,
Helmets of Shorts. We will update you next VEHK. We'll
hear from everybody a little later on today, but we'll
see on Jagdam next Tuesday.
