Speaker 1 (00:17):
Welcome into tag Xam. I'm Kinnanni Stephens, Brian Sexton, and
John Osier with me this morning as the pre season
now behind us. Wrapped up preseason game number three on
Saturday in Miami, and we'll talk a little bit about that,
but we'll also look ahead two week one against the
Panthers and cut down Day is coming up on Tuesday,
So we'll start out with big things. Big thing number
one is return to sender.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Brian.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
I thought we were going to have some decisions to
make about offensive line, but Fred Johnson heading back to
Philadelphia seventh round pick coming here.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Smart move, Yeah, I think so.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
Look, we saw during training camp that Chuma Adoga could
go out and play right tackle, and we saw Patrick
McCurry in the Saints game play a little bit of
right tackle. Besides that, we've seen both of those guys
at some point their crew playing on the left side.
And Anton Harrison is a guy who can play in
multiple positions. And you've got Cole van landon w hoop
you hope to get back at some point this season
as well, so you know they have a bit of

(01:08):
depth at offensive tackle and all the versatility that they
talked about creating came through with those two free.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Agents, particular Idoga and McCarry. John.

Speaker 5 (01:17):
Yeah, this really became a case where they realistically were
not going to be able to get him on the
fifty three comfortably. They like Wyatt Myland, they like Genna Manheim.
As Brian said, they feel like they've gotten debt, and
they feel like they've got guys who can snap everywhere inside.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
They feel like they have their swinging tackle.

Speaker 5 (01:38):
So it became a case where how are you going
to make the fifty three work the game they were
and unfortunately for Fred Johns, he didn't fit in. But
they've made a couple of good trades to get some
value for guys who weren't going to be around in
the last week or so.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
And you mentioned that he didn't fit in. It's funny
I thought maybe John he was the biggest human being
we've ever had a Turney camp here. I mean literally,
if I didn't even I was just playing off of that.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Yeah, you look, as we look at this roster going forward,
we know they made that trade with the Saints as well.
We'll talk a little bit about roster decisions coming up.
But big thing number two, that's a rap the preseason
behind us. Now they played in Miami, some players played
in Miami, but over all Liam Collen talked about the
improvement he's geen over the preseason.

Speaker 6 (02:24):
You still gotta continue to get better. There's no doubt
we We cannot waste a single moment, second minute, practice,
walk through, meeting, cannot be wasted. We need to improve
in from now until Carolina. There needs to be continued improvement.
But I am proud of of of this team in
the way that they compete, the physicality in which they

(02:48):
play with. I think we can if we can start
there and have that as a standard that continues to
show up every time we compete. Uh, I'll live with that.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
John. Not a ton to talk about in terms of
the game, uh against the Dolphins, because thirty six players
did not dress for the Jaguars as opposed to what
the Dolphins put out there. They had their starters going
for a little bit. But it was encouraging to see
the defense early on against the Dolphins starters and just
kind of that continued progress, cause you want it on
all parts of the roster, not just the starters.

Speaker 5 (03:22):
Guess aw, what Liam said after was interesting about playing
with the physicality.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
There's so little we all know that.

Speaker 5 (03:30):
On September seventh, everything that we've seen the first three games,
all of a sudden just sort of drifts into nothingness
and you forget it all. But I do feel like
Liam likes that physical tone. I feel like he does
like the way this team plays, So maybe they've established
something in that regard. And I do think how the
front seven played against the Dolphins first team was impressive

(03:53):
and encouraging. Mason Smith was out there, Uh, there were
some guys uh, Danny Strigo, Uh, I certain guys who
are going to be around here who are starting to
push up into that world of us known about. So
I thought that first part was more intriguing than I
thought it would be.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Brian, I don't know if it's gonna translate to anything.

Speaker 5 (04:16):
They don't how many guys you're gonna be playing, But
it felt good and it felt like it mattered somehow.

Speaker 4 (04:22):
You know, John in that last SoundBite that we heard
from Lee and he used the word standard, right, that's
what leaders do. They established the standard, and he's been
working to build the standard. And he just said it's
about playing hard and getting better every single time they
take the grass and they did. Those young guys out there,
as you both have mentioned. On offense, Jaquinna Jackson ran

(04:43):
really hard and Kevin Harris, who just came in last week,
showed you something as well. The offensive line jumped off
sides a little too often, but they did create some
holes in the running game. On defense, there are so
many names to talk about guys who are competing for
the roster. You mentioned Danny striggu and bj Green, right,
Jordan Jefferson and Tyler Lacy, and these guys all showed

(05:05):
up to play and they didn't end up stuffing the Dolphins.
Eventually they got it going, but those first two drives
they made them, you know, three and out. So it
was encouraging to see the second team, the third team
guys showing that they had gotten better. And if that's
the standard that the coach believes in and that's the
one he set, then mission accomplished at least through the preseason.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Our final big thing today is going to be cut Day,
which is tomorrow at four pm, and head coach William
Cohen talked about his first cut day as a head coach.

Speaker 6 (05:34):
You know, so many of these guys, like I told
him last night are been a part of creating our
edge and who we are as a team, and so
those decisions aren't easy at all, especially as a young
coach doing it for the first time. Really, those conversations
aren't easy, The decisions aren't easy, But I think I
believe some guys probably helped themselves out tonight in some ways,

(05:56):
whether it's for our team or somebody else's team. Ultimately,
you want to help guys continue to further their dreams
as well as obviously make our roster as competitive as
it can be.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Some decisions to.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Be made today, Brian, we talked a little bit about
the O line. Decisions might be a little bit easier
after moving Fred Johnson back to Philadelphia. But any surprises ahead,
do you think? Or just have to wait and see.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
You know, I don't think the initial roster will surprise
a lot of people, But maybe in the days ahead, John,
as players start to become available, guys that other teams
let go that these guys like, then you might see
some you.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Know, John and I were talking before the show.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
You know, there's some positions where you'd like to get
better and where you've got a lot of numbers. Safety's
one in particular where there's five or six guys that
you can make the case for having an impact being
on the roster and you could only end up with
four of those or three if there's someone else that
they like.

Speaker 5 (06:50):
Yeah, it's a meazing a couple of days because I
do think they're going to be active, maybe a receiver,
maybe a couple other positions where they just feel like
that final roster spot.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
It needs to be upgraded. It's gonna be an interesting couple.

Speaker 5 (07:05):
Of days at As Brian said, safety corner linebacker, I'm intrigued.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
I'm intrigued.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
I'm intrigued to stay with us here on jag Zam.
We're gonna go over that roster and tell you what
we think some of those decisions might be. This school.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
That's this school that.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Welcome back to jag Zam. Cut day is tomorrow. They're
gonna get this roster down to fifty three people. So
we're gonna do a little this or that. When we
talk about it. We don't know what's gonna be done.
We've been around, so we're gonna make some educated guesses.
First one's gonna be about wide receiver. Are they gonna
keep six and or do you think they'll kind of
keep five check to waiver wire maybe add to that, John,

(08:03):
I know that was something you mentioned was a possibility.
Obviously we heard through the U through the grape vine
from the Broncos that they were kind of looking at
their receiver at one point, So is that a focus.

Speaker 5 (08:15):
I think they keep five, and then I think the
four that we all know are very very solid.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Right beyond that, I.

Speaker 5 (08:25):
Want to clarify a lot of these guys were talking
about being cut are still gonna be around, right, Yeah,
And that's the big change in the last maybe ten years, Brian,
when there were six practice squad guys, these cuts meant
everybody was gone r Right. Now you've got sixteen practice
squad guys. So a lot of these guys that we
were saying, oh, that gonna be around.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
So I think uh Irwin Trammel, guys like that could
be around. Maybe not on the fifty three.

Speaker 5 (08:52):
I think they feel good about those guys, but I
think they're also guys that if if you release, they
may fit better here and be part of this as
sort of that periphery getting onto the roster three or
four times during the year guy. So I think they
keep five and starts of way, you know, for the fifth, right,

(09:13):
I think that they would like to keep five.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
And I think Trammel's a guy that you have a
real hard time getting rid of because all he's done
is make place for you. But he's been on and
off your practice squad, so perhaps that's where he goes.
But what they really would like is a bigger bodied
guy that fifth receiver, to be someone who can help
heath and special teams, but also be the possession guy
who gets to the sticks and gets you forward. And
I think that was trenton Irwin's job to earn. But

(09:38):
I don't think he's clarified it right, and I don't
think he gives you enough on special teams necessarily to
be able to say, well, that's his spot.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
So five.

Speaker 4 (09:47):
If they love Trammel, and I know they like him,
and Bucky and I talked a lot about it on
Saturday night.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
Maybe six maybe six?

Speaker 2 (09:54):
All right?

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Another crowded a room, the running backs room. Is it
possible to keep four running backs on this roster? Not
necessarily dressing, but can Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
They'll keep four.

Speaker 5 (10:04):
I'd be stunned if they don't keep four, because they
love l Quinn Allen and they're not cutting him, and
I think he's going to be active. He does so
many things. Well, so yeah, you can keep four. Now
can they get four active on game day?

Speaker 2 (10:22):
That's really really hard to get?

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Well, making a bit easier.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
The coach told us on Friday in the production meeting
that Basil Tuton has become much more effective, much more
versed in special teams. It has improved, and so he's
a guy that you can have active on game day
for special teams. Now, at some point he's gonna be
the lead guy and not play special teams. But early on,
if he's not going to get the bulk of the carries,
he could still be active because of teams.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Is a trade of possibility? Or is that? Is there
not enough value out a running back position to get
much for that? Do you think they'll just keep everybody
they have.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
It's always possible.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
But if you listen to Liam talk about running backs
over a seventeen game season, if you keep three over
a seventeen game season, one of those guys isn't gonna
be available.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
For you for three or four weeks.

Speaker 5 (11:11):
If you keep three, you're gonna have a situation at
some point in week nine where you have two, and
I don't think they want that.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
So look, sometimes, Brian.

Speaker 5 (11:23):
When you've got a lot of good players at one position,
you have to figure out a way to keep good players.
And so I think they may keep that there, maybe
use the Travis Hunter lever, whatever that mean, meaning one
of those positions you don't have to have five because
you have Travis. Maybe they cheated a little bit, you know,

(11:43):
in their numbers by doing that.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
I thought Ryan O'Halleran was ten days ago rode a
really compelling column about could you trade Tank Pixby. You're
not gonna trade either the rookies obviously, and you can't
really trade Travis etn because he's playing with a six million.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Dollar you know, fifth year option.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
So then you have to decide, well, I mean, is
what I'm going to get back worthy of what Tank is?

Speaker 3 (12:04):
And I think Tank's had a really.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
Good camp and he's different in that he is a
guy who could play with power and he's got that
big play, explosive potential. He showed us in the game
against New Orleans, you know, just like he had last
year against Houston.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
He's got the ability to do that.

Speaker 4 (12:18):
So I don't know why you trade any of these
four guys, because all of them can help you win
this year.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
Why send them away and have them help someone else?

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Yeah, if you're not gonna get much back, I think
that's a very smart move. So potentially four running backs
on this roster. And then as we look ahead to
tough cuts, this was before we had the Fred Johnson trade.
So what do you think the toughest group to cut
down is going to be? Obviously I had my eyes
on safety. I think offensive line at one point would
have been a little more difficult. Brian, what do you
think the toughest position to get down on the cuts
will be?

Speaker 4 (12:45):
Todd, I think you hit it with safety because you
know you've got your four. You've got Eric Murray obviously
in Dewey winger that you think very highly of, and
Antonio Johnson's has become a special teams guy. And here's
where it becomes interesting. Daniel Thomas has been one of
the best special teams players on this team for a
number of years now, and Keith has a lot of
confidence in him. But they drafted Rayon Lane to play

(13:06):
special teams as well. So you've just you've got a
bunch of guys, and it's not a position where you
normally keep five, so you don't keep six.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
Safety, and I mean, we already covered the one.

Speaker 5 (13:18):
I think running back is the toughest because you've got
four guys there who they know can play in the
NFL and play at what they would think of as
a winning level. The safety, for the reasons Brian mentioned
safety is going to be a tough cut.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
And I think Daniel Thomas makes it particularly tough because
he's such a good special.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
Teams play and we're looking at video of Darnel Savage
and even mentioned him, and he's got a cap number
that's pretty sizable this year.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
And the Jaggers already have more.

Speaker 4 (13:44):
Than fifty million in dead money, So that kind of
makes you lean into how much more dead money do
we want.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
Different groups to keep an eye on that. Decisions will
be made tomorrow by four. Stay with us, though, we
got some hot takes coming up about start a season.
Welcome back to Jack Exam Hot Takes today, brought to
you by Firehouse Subs. The preseason is behind us. We
get real football very very soon. September seventh, first game

(14:14):
a season against the Panthers and kind of a wrap
up of the trading camp season. We don't always put
a ton into the preseason games specifically, but as a whole, Brian,
what's your hot taker, what's your takeaway from this time?

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Well, we thought that we would see dramatic improvement in
the Jaguars running game. It was an area of need.
It's what Liam Cohen did so very effectively last year
in Tampa, and we've seen it on the practice field
and I in particular have been beating that drum talking
about what it means for the quarterback and you've written
about it.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
John. However, in getting to know Anthony KEMPINELI a little.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Better and seeing how his team has gotten from the
first preseason game to the third preseason game and shown
improvement in almost every respect sacks, not takeaways, but really
effective football, I think that this defense could be as bigger,
bigger story than the running game by the time we
get to the end of the year. In particular because

(15:10):
Campanialy talked on Friday in the television production meeting about
people overplays and the culture that he was trying to
build in the room, about self sacrifice, about caring for
the guy next to you, and that all it sounds
good and it doesn't necessarily mean anything. But we saw
the threes John out there, and you had Strigau and
Green who were fighting against each other, but each guy

(15:30):
got a sack and they were celebrating with one another.
Right you had Tyler Lacy and Jordan Jefferson, yusirab Doula
and Dennis Gardak. I mean, these guys were in a
position where they were playing for their football lives because
those were the battles that were identified to us, and
they came through and played really well. And I just
think that this defense and its culture of people over

(15:54):
plays has created a tighter knit group that cares about
each other. And he said to us, if you don't
care about each other, you don't really have much of
a chance, and these guys really do. You saw the
veteran players on the sideline, you know, who were locked
in Andrew Andrew Wingard said to us after the game
that he spent the whole game watching the young guys
and was proud of them.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
So there's something to that.

Speaker 4 (16:15):
And I think this defense might be as big a
story in terms of its improvement as the running game.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
Yeah, I think there's a lot to that because I
think they're gonna believe in the direction defensively all season,
and it's clear from the comments that they've made in
the offseason that wasn't quite the case last year.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
That's a big deal on defense.

Speaker 5 (16:31):
Interestingly, on defense, I think a few guys are really key.
It's hard to judge any of this right because we
really only saw the first team for three series, So
how do we get a real feel for what they're
gonna show?

Speaker 2 (16:44):
And Gardeck is really really.

Speaker 5 (16:46):
Interesting in the pass rush because he can give them something.
And it's silly to say Travis Hunter has been overlooked,
but I haven't talked about him a whole lot on defense.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
If he and Jordan Lewis.

Speaker 5 (17:01):
Are this sort of takeaway guys that they've shown at times,
Travis in his career and Jordan Lewis out here and
they're starting all of a sudden, you've got some elements
that can.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
Disrupt the opposing offense.

Speaker 5 (17:15):
So I think those guys get real interesting once they're
playing the entire game.

Speaker 2 (17:19):
I went the other direction. I went with offense.

Speaker 5 (17:23):
When Liam Cohen was talking after the game the other night,
somethings just struck me of we haven't.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Seen this guy game plan. Yet.

Speaker 5 (17:31):
We know he's got tools, we know he's got four
running backs that he likes, we know he's got wide receivers.
But you don't game plan during the preseason. And this
guy is a play caller. We've seen situations on the
practice field where he has schemed guys open. I don't
know if this is going to be a great, elite,
top five offense, yet this year, I do believe that

(17:53):
there's going to be a lot more big plays, a
lot more explosives, Liam creating opportunities for these really fast guys.
To me, Brian, a marginal uptake in short yardage running
coupled with what nine more explosive plays in a season
gives you one every other game. How much of a
difference with that in mate last year if you get

(18:14):
seven more points in five games.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
So that's what I always look for.

Speaker 5 (18:17):
How how can you improve that element? Is the thing
that we haven't seen yet that I'm intrigued when the
season starts.

Speaker 4 (18:25):
And since you're talking about intrigue improvement in the short
yard is running game as we've seen, isn't just gonna
be lining up and running through the A gaps right
and blocking better or hitting the right hole. They're gonna
use the jet sweeps, they're gonna use the quick screen game,
they're gonna use slants. I mean, they're gonna find a
lot of different ways to keep the offense on the field.
And we've seen the last couple of years the offense
has been so ineffective on third down. We've never gotten

(18:48):
to see a rhythm, you know, anything that the coach
could get into the third and fourth segments of his playbook.
He was always in the first segment because you had
to do the fundamentals right, and they didn't.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
So I'm excited to see that too.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
You too.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
I'm gonna build off a little bit of what John
was talking about with the offense because I said, how
about a hot start, because why not, let's think positive.
I've got my teel colored glasses on. I'm gonna think
positive about this because I think sometimes it's a benefit
when people don't know what you're gonna bring out there.
Because we don't know what we're gonna see. The opponents
don't know what they're gonna see. So I think the
Jaguars are gonna start out hot. The Panthers, I think

(19:21):
they get a win the Bengals always start slow, so
I'm gonna be optimistic and go with a little three
and one to start the season.

Speaker 3 (19:29):
Is my almost the last time.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
It's been a long time around here since we've seen
a hot start, a fast start for a Jaguars team.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
And it's hot weather here, so why not have a
hot start? That's what I'm going with. But I'm just
going with the John what we're talking about. We don't
know what we're gonna see yet, right, They don't know
what they're gonna see out of the Jaguars, So let's
think positive.

Speaker 5 (19:46):
Yeah again. The next couple of weeks and No answered
a lot of his own questions.

Speaker 2 (19:51):
What do you think? What do you think?

Speaker 5 (19:52):
It's so hard because even after pre season now and
you only see three series. Okay, we saw a little
bit I like first team offense, I like we saw
at Trevor, but we didn't see any skiming.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
So what's it gonna look like?

Speaker 5 (20:05):
And it's gonna be fun the first few weeks to
see what this looks like.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
Something will happen. Yep, we'll be here to see it.
Stay with us. We'll tell you what's coming up. The
rest of the week before the start of the season.

Speaker 2 (20:27):

Speaker 3 (20:35):
I feel good.

Speaker 7 (20:36):
I think are the work we've put in will show
during the season. The work we put in during camp.
Today wasn't our best showing. But you know, Grant made
a great point to the quarterbacks after practice. At the
end of the day, we're not going to be judged
on how today went. You know that this is just today,
and you put it in a box, you learn from it,
you move on. That doesn't determine what we do in
week one versus Carolina, just like tomorrow won't determine I start,

(20:56):
what we do in Carolina. It's just an accumulation of
all the days and take all the information and learning
from it, growing from it and understanding that it's all
making us better to get.

Speaker 3 (21:06):
Us to a place to where My Week one or
way to.

Speaker 1 (21:08):
Go was Trevor Lawrence after joined practice in Miami. The
last week saw of him for training camp because he
didn't play in that final preseason game. But we're talking
about Liam Collen what to expect from him. We need
to see more out of Trevor this season.

Speaker 2 (21:21):
Yeah, it's going to be a fascinating storyline.

Speaker 5 (21:23):
Early I thought There's been a lot of times during
training camp, Brian where I liked what I saw from Trevor.
There were other times, such as Thursday, where he was
the first to admit too sloppy. Realistically, it makes sense
that there would still be growing pains in a new offense,
with new footwork, etc.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
I feel like he's going to.

Speaker 5 (21:45):
Start off at a solid level, and I'm curious to
see when solid can turn into spectacular.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
But that's the storyline for the first six weeks.

Speaker 4 (21:56):
Yeah, he sounded like a coach there. I mean talking
about a growth mindset. I appreciated that I hadn't heard
that from him in recent years. It always felt like
he was regurgitating what the coaches had talked to him about,
and this time he was explaining it in greater detail.
I asked him on Friday about his leadership because I
I've seen and I've heard a different Trevor Lawrence this year,

(22:18):
and he said that Liam's program, the way that Liam
handles things, has allowed him to step up and to
be more of a leader, still retaining his own individual
qualities because he's never going.

Speaker 3 (22:30):
To be a loud mouth.

Speaker 4 (22:32):
But he really appreciates the position he's in to rise
to the challenge that Liam gave him to be the quarterback,
