Speaker 1 (00:18):
Welcome to Jags A I my kind Honesteve in the
brand section.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
John Osier with me.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
It is week one at the NFL.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
We finally get to see Jaguars football for reel again
this Sunday to take on the Panthers in Week one
in the season opener. So let's get to our big
Things brought to you by dak Government Employees Health Association.
And it's gonna be a cat fight to take it
on the Panthers, another team coming off a disappointing season
last year. Brian, when you look at this, we talk
about starting fast. Obviously you want to play well right
out of the gate. Well, which one of these teams

(00:44):
really needs to play well out of the gate?

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Well, just a thought on the Panthers. They won six
of their last nine, so they have a little bit
of something that they can lean on. Whereas the Jaguars
ended last season on a bad note. Listen, they struggled
mightily in the fourth quarter of games that they could
have won last year. So you have a team in
Jacksonville that's hungry to erase their lack of resilience, their

(01:08):
inability to close out games.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
And you know.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
We've heard from the head coach John since the first
day he was here that he wants a team that's fast, right,
and it appears that through the course of the preseason
they've gotten to that point where they're attacking and situational
masters and tough. But we don't know until we see
him on Sunday.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
Right, Yeah, and this hearkens back again first game ever
Brian in Hall of Fame game in ninety five. Man
of these teams, I don't know if it's a rivalry
who needs it From our perspective, the Jaguars really really
need it, but I think it's probably equal. You know,
Carolina showed good things. People don't quite know what they

(01:56):
are that. You know, did they get hot late against
you know, well when it didn't matter. There's an element
of that, but they also got hot late. So I
don't think anything that happened last year pertains to the
Jaguars right now. But I do think it would be
nice to get to one to er because the schedule
gets tough, and this should be a game where you're
on even foot.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Should be let's hope it is a big thing. Number
two I should say is grounds work. As we talk
about kind of setting the tone early last couple of seasons,
this team.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Didn't really feel like they had their identity, didn't know
what it was. Trevor Lawrence talked about kind of asserting
that early this season we're a.

Speaker 5 (02:34):
Tough, physical team. It's something we're gonna pride ourselves on.
I think being situationally really smart. That's such a big
part of this game and this league. Games come down
to one score all bit more often than they don't,
so the situations are huge that'll win and lose you
a lot of games. And then just detail oriented group
that's really the small things matter so much. I think

(02:55):
that's something that this stuff has done an awesome job
of preaching to us, and it's been really hard every
day how important those details are. The communication and something
we've gotten a lot better at. But like I said,
you know, you want to see it all come together
on Sunday when the bullets are flying, and see us
do that for a full game.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
John, We've talked about this.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
You can say all the you know, the acronyms, say
what you want to be, but when they actually get
out on the field, we're going to see if they're
tough as they want to be. And obviously they want
to be fast as they're as well, among other things,
being smart with the details.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
But will we be will we be able to tell
a lot from what we see out the team in
the first week.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
Well, I think we'll be able to tell the direction
they want to go. And I'm with you Ka. When
I was listening to Trevor talk about this, I thought, well, look,
I know what they want to be. They want to
be really physical, and they want to respond really well
to adversity everything else. They want to play fast and
everything else. But to me, those are the two elements.
It's nice to say you're physical, it's nice to say

(03:49):
you respond well to adversity. In this league, you don't
really know that, Brian, until the fourth quarter of the
first game that you go play. So I do think
those are two areas that Liam Cohen cares about a lot,
and then we'll be able to start seeing it on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
And they just happened to be two areas that this
team couldn't overcome last year. They weren't a very physical
team at the point of attack. They struggled to convert
on third down and short really they have for the
last two seasons, and that's had a detrimental effect on
the offense because it couldn't stay on the field, It
couldn't go more than two or three pages into the
playbook because they were constantly punting. And then the other

(04:26):
side of it is the resiliency. And I mentioned that already,
that they lost nine out of ten games in the
fourth quarter, And how many times did you go back
look at the Eagles game, look at the Packers game,
look at the Texans game where there were opportunities to
win and they didn't. So you know, he's pointing out
the obvious, but that's been the focus since Liam got
here to get those things fixed. And we won't know

(04:46):
until as you mentioned, the fourth quarter till then our.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Final big thing today is going to be the trenches.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Obviously, we talked a ton about the offensive line and
the defensive line and the off season, the changes that
they've made, and what they're going to need to improve.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Upon going forwards. Brian, do you have a focus on
you think they both need to step up on?

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Well, they both need to step up on Sunday. I'm
looking at the offense just because I've been beating that
drum for so many years. But Ron talked to Robert
Hainsey in the locker room yesterday like a lot of
people did, and he was talking about when everyone knows
that you need a yard, that's when those guys expect
to be able to get that yard. And I told

(05:23):
him they haven't expected that the last two years. He
says they do this year. The addition of McCary of
Adoga to a group of guys who've been here for
a couple of years. I think John gives him a
lot of versatility, it gives him a lot of depth,
and it gives them some experience. I expect them to
be able to get a yard this year.

Speaker 6 (05:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
I thought overall that to define the offensive line last
couple of years, like everybody says, I'll be looking at
the interior of the defensive line onto the linebackers. They
need to stop the run better. If they don't stop
the run better, nothing else works on defense. And clearly
during camp they saw something that they wanted to improve there.

(06:03):
They acquired two guys who are on the roster in
the middle of the defense. How stout are you? I
know they want to be stout. I know Anthony camp
nellily talks about getting off blocks and being violent Sundays
when we find out if that is talk or if
it's real.

Speaker 6 (06:20):
I think it's real.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
All right, stay with us here on JAGSA. I'm coming
up after the break. I go behind enemy lines, check
in with our panthers inside, or some.

Speaker 1 (06:27):

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Welcome into our behind enemy Line segment where we check
in with a reporter covering the opponent. For this week,
it's going to be the Carolina Panthers, so we're checking
in with Nick Carboni, sports director at w C and
C in Charlotte.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Nick, thanks for joining us this week, and.

Speaker 7 (07:00):
I'm truly behind enemy Lions. I am inside Bank of
America Stadium. I do have clear ince, I promise, but
glad to be with you.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Thank you.

Speaker 6 (07:06):
We're very much in there.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
We appreciate that we always at the first first game
of the year, right, we don't really know what we're
going to see from anybody. Obviously, you guys kind of
went through a rebuild a year ahead of us. We're
doing that right now here in Jacksonville. Where's the status
of that and what are kind of the team's thoughts
right now going into Week one.

Speaker 7 (07:23):
Yeah, I think this camp was all about comfortability that
kind of builds confidence. That is year two for Bryce
Young under head coach Dave Canalis. And even though this
is Bryce's third season in the NFL, it's the first
time he's been able to carry over the same coach,
offensive coordinator, play caller from year to year in that span.

(07:44):
So it was a tumultuous first couple of years for him,
especially that rookie season, which I know you guys are
kind of familiar with situation, a situation like that, so
he's kind of coming out of that, and I think
Bryce has gained more confidence by being comfortable with what's happening,
and I think everybody has as well. So I think
this camp was all about, you know, being comfortable with
what happened last year continuing into this year and building

(08:07):
on that.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
We did see some changes for you guys on offense,
obviously some trades, some injuries in terms of the wide
receiver corps, but some drafting to that position as well.
Where is the in terms of being comfortable with that
the new receiver corp.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
He's going to have. How do you feel Bryce young
is going into this week?

Speaker 6 (08:25):
Yeah, we're gonna find out quickly. This is now the
youngest receiver corps in the NFL.

Speaker 7 (08:30):
After they traded thirty five year old Adam Thielen last week,
which was a surprise to a lot of us that
had happened so quickly. They were relying on Jalen Coker,
a second year undrafted receiver, to fill that slot role. Well,
the day after Carolina traded Feeling Coker got injured. He's
out at least four weeks. They brought Brett back Hunter Renfro,
a name a lot of Jags fans are familiar with,

(08:52):
played for the Raiders, was a Pro bowler. Sat out
last year with alternative colitis, really serious injury. Wasn't sure
he'd come back and play football. Only wanted to do
it if it could be with the Panthers.

Speaker 6 (09:01):
He's from the.

Speaker 7 (09:02):
Carolina so he got cut Tuesday dealing with traded Wednesday.
Cocher was injured Thursday. Renfro was back Saturday and he
will start this Sunday in the slot for Carolina. So
the Panthers are very confident in their young receivers. As
you mentioned, draft one in the first round this year.
Tet Tyro McMillan drafted one in the first round last
year in xavierly Get and they really liked their second

(09:26):
year tight end out of Texas JT Sanders, in terms
of catching the football. So I'm sure they wouldn't have
liked the last week to go the way it did.
But I still think they are confident in those guys.
We'll see you when Bryce gets comfortable with them.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
So for us here in Jacksonville, we've got a partially
new offensive line, obviously new schemes on both sides of
the football. A lot of our focus is on whether
they'll be able to protect Trevor Lawrence, so as far
as edge rushing and kind of the line that Carolina
is bringing into town. However, are they feeling on defense?

Speaker 7 (09:58):
Yeah, getting after the core has been a problem for
the Panthers dating back to last season. They're leading sack
getter from last year and there weren't any eye popping stats.
Was Jenevian Clowney and they let him walk. They drafted
to all SEC edge rushers in the second and third rounds,
so their talent level and their ability to get after
the quarterback in the NFL remains to be seen. They

(10:20):
obviously like the fact that they came out of the
SEC that they were Day two picks Nick Gordon and
Princely Umanmiellen. But other than that, they have a couple
of veterans who are pretty good players in Pat Jones
the second they got him in from Minnesota.

Speaker 6 (10:34):
Dj Wanham, who was here last year, had a slow.

Speaker 7 (10:37):
Start to the season, didn't play the first half of
the season because of some medical stuff. He's you know,
I don't think they have any elite pass rushers at
the moment unless one of these two rookies is able
to carry that load this season. So you know that
that's probably their their weak weakest point in that defense interior.

(10:58):
On the line, they got a little stronger Derek Brown,
pro bowler who had a record setting over one hundred
tackles two years ago but was injured most of last year.

Speaker 6 (11:06):
He is back.

Speaker 7 (11:07):
They picked up to Shaun Wharton who played alongside Chris
Jones in Kansas City, and they brought in Bobby Brown
from the LA Rams, who won a Super Bowl. So
their big focus is going to be to try and
stop the run down at Jacksonville. Getting after the quarterback
would be a bonus for this team at this point.
I think they've got guys they think they grow into
that role, but this is going to be weak one for.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
Those guys very good here.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
We're looking forward to seeing exactly how they're going to
use Travis Hunter. We've talked a bunch about what it's
going to be. We don't know yet even they're playing
that close to the best for sure. Who are some
players you have your eyes on for the Panthers that
will kind of make or break it for them on Sunday, Well.

Speaker 6 (11:42):
Nobody that plays offense and defense. I can tell you
that guy. So we're all interested to see what happens
there too. You know, I think j C.

Speaker 7 (11:49):
Horn, the Pro Bowl cornerback who had a full healthy
season for the first time for the most part last year,
made his first Pro Bowl, got a big contract in
the offseason. You know how he is able to hold
up against some of Jacksonville's receivers and then really the Panthers' receivers.
We talked about it before they took a big swing
on tet Tyro McMillan at number eight overall when they

(12:10):
needed to plug defensive holes in the first round. By
many accounts, they went with offense and a guy they
think can help Bryce Young here for a long time.
They've had their moments in camp where the chemistry is there.
They've had other moments where they need to work on
some of that timing. So how much of it will
be fully formed by week one remains to be seen.

(12:30):
And then their other first round receiver from the prior season,
Zaverly Get He had a nice rookie season.

Speaker 6 (12:35):
It wasn't bad by any means, but he also had
eight drops. So is he able to.

Speaker 7 (12:40):
Make tough contest and catches against Jacksonville and hold onto
the football in those big moments. So I think the
receiver room and Bryce Young starting this season. How he
finished last three games last year, ten total touchdowns, zero turnovers,
is going to be kind of what makes her breaks
this Carolina Panthers football team this year.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
It's gonna be a fun one.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
Football is back. We appreciate you, Nick, and that's behind
enemy lines.

Speaker 5 (13:04):
You got it.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Thanks for having me, all right, guys, we heard a
little bit about the Panthers there, so coming back to
us when we think about going up against a team
that kind of probably started their rebuild a little bit
earlier than ours. Obviously in ours is different than theirs.
They have their new quarterbacks, still dealing with Bryce Young.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
A lot of.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
Opportunity there, especially with a team that we feel this
is going to be a game where they can set
the tone a little bit offensively, hopefully and going up
against a defense that seems like maybe an area that
they're working on.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
You know, the last time that we saw this team,
they weren't very good. The Jags shut them out twenty
six to nothing. But they moved into the top ten
defensively last year. So they have got a really skillful unit.
And they did that without Derek Brown as their best
defensive lineman so and trading away a pass rusher to
the New York Giants. So defensively, they're a better team

(13:55):
than people give them credit for. And I know all
the focus has been on Bryce Young and the changes
they've made the receiver, but their defense can keep them
in games.

Speaker 4 (14:03):
Yeah, this is one of those games where you know,
every Jags fan you talk to, oh, we should get Carolina. Well,
guarantee every Carolina fan is It's not like Carolina is
walking down here going, oh my god, we can't beat Jacksonville,
you know. So I think both teams feel like it's
one that they have a chance to get and should
set the tone for their season.

Speaker 6 (14:21):
You talked about the defense.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
Carolina's offense has weapons.

Speaker 6 (14:25):
They run the ball well.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
And they know they can go to their outside guys
or for fifty to fifty balls. They have an identity
and a way they want to play. They're not searching
for what they are, which going into a season is important.
So this is a dangerous team for the Jags.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
You know, you remember this because you covered the game
the first time these two teams played in the regular
season back in nineteen ninety six. It was Week six
and the Panthers came in three and one and they
were kind of the hot team. The Daguars had stumbled
to a two and three beginning. But there was such
anxiety about the game because it was Carolina and Jacksonville
and they came into the league together. And the Jaguars
went out and punched him in the mouth. I mean,

(15:00):
they played a really physical game, exactly what these guys
are talking about here. So it's just the parallel, the
striking to me that if this team wants to win,
they're going to have to come out and punch them
in the mouth. They're going to have to be able
to play physical football.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
Yeah, that game is an aside. After that game may
have been to that point the most emotional I'd ever
seen Tom Cofflin.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
Yeah, a good emotion.

Speaker 6 (15:19):
Oh oh oh, very much.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
So.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
Yeah, he was.

Speaker 6 (15:22):
He was chessed out and rightfully so. At the time,
it was a big way.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
Well, the Panthers. They got all the attention when the
two teams came into the league together because they were
Carolina and it was Charlotte and it was a hot market,
and so there were newspapers and cities that used the
Panther's logo when the Jaguars were in town.

Speaker 5 (15:42):
They did.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
It was as if we didn't exist compared to them
at some point in time. So there was a lot
of emotion around the game. And we're not in the
same conference, let alone the same division, but playing Carolina
still means something to people who've been around since the beginning.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
All right, stay with here on jag Zam.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Coming up after the break, we'll tell you what we
think the headlines are going to be on Monday morning

Speaker 1 (16:17):
Welcome back in. We're gonna try to predict the feature
today as we go into week one. We're gonna predict
what the headlines are gonna be. So what do you
think the headlines are gonna be on Monday?

Speaker 3 (16:24):
I'll say one and oh uh. I think the Jaguars
will find a way to get the win at home
on opening Day. And I think Travis Hunter will make
a play on defense a takeaway. And this is one
of the storylines we haven't talked about as much this week,
is the fact that the Jaguars had only eighty takeaways
last season. I mean, that's just not sustainable if you
want to win this game. And I think Travis Hunter

(16:45):
is as good a threat on defense as he is
on offense. And I think he makes a play and
perhaps it's a play that turns the momentum the other way.

Speaker 4 (16:53):
Well, that would be a cool tone setter, because that's
what they drafted him for. And that's why they didn't
have enough last year. You hope that the difference this
year is big plays at the end of games. I
think they've got more guys on offense who can do it,
but certainly over time, Travis is sort of the symbol
of a guy who can do that. I went with

(17:14):
let's get physical. I think if the Jaguars win and
you feel good about this team after the game, it's
gonna be Brian, because they look like a team, as
we talked Abart earlier in the show, that you didn't
see the last couple of years.

Speaker 6 (17:30):
You would like to stop your run and have a
big play.

Speaker 4 (17:34):
On defense in that regard, maybe a truck sacked by
Traylon Walker, if you will, And it would be cool
right for this team the direction they want to go.
If they're playing four minute football offensively late and can
make that happen, you know, there's a million ways to
win a game if you're playing four minutes and holding
the ball. I think Liam would smile most widely if

(17:57):
that was the case.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
The early injury the Whens the injury report had three
starting offensive linemen for the Carolina Panthers out, which talking
about this Jaguars defensive front certainly would be a lift
and a kwanu. Their left tackle had an appendectomy. They're
listening him as questionable. I would say he's doubtful. That's
a major and it takes a month five weeks to

(18:18):
get back into it. So perhaps there's a potential there
for the Jaguars to dominate the line of scrimmage. It
may forget dominate that that's the wrong word to use,
but to win at the line of scrimmage.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
Yes, And we have to remember as well, Josh heinzelin
quickly approaching that franchise record number. I think he's two
and a half to break it, so he's on his way.
So we'll keep an eye on that as well, because
we know he likes to get his sacks and bunches,
so that would be a nice touch to see it
in week one here. I went with a one pun
as well, because week one, let's do it. I think
there's an opportunity here. We talked so much Trevor Lawrence's

(18:51):
fifth season.

Speaker 1 (18:52):
He's healthy.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Finally, we haven't seen a ton of them in terms
of just getting injuries and just things.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
Not going well the last couple of seasons.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
Every opportunity is going to the air form today UH Sunday,
excuse me, And I think this is an opportunity for
him to kind of take the reins and really make
this his team, take this offense, run with it, do
what Baker Mayfield was able to do. Now, a lot
of that's gonna rely on the running games. While I'm
not saying I expecting to be Superman out there, but
seeing his command of the field team has commanded this
offense grow as the A training camp has gone on,

(19:21):
hoping to see that continue in re in a week one.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
I sat with him on Wednesday to talk for pregame radio,
and I just saw a spark in his eyes, you know.
I mean, he's so even keeled most of the time
it doesn't let you too far inside, but it was
pretty clear just sitting for an interview that he's ready
for this one.

Speaker 6 (19:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
Just wanna see a clean game from him A and
UH the UH A stable confident quarterback UH on Sunday
from him, UH would mean more to me than numbers.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
And do wonders for our fourteen Absolutely say with us quickly.
We will UH tell you what's coming up the rest
of the week before first Team of the Year, DAGs fans.

And the Sunday's game against the Panthers brought to you
by Publics.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
We're shopping as a plug.

Speaker 6 (20:14):
You're talking about guys.

Speaker 4 (20:17):
Having a feel for the game and understand.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
So what happened right here?

Speaker 6 (20:21):
I'm calling a play, My mic cuts out.

Speaker 7 (20:25):
Well, we could pant it could freak out, but Trevor
pulls a play.

Speaker 6 (20:30):
On his own and we execute it really well. But
that's a great job by Trevor. I understand the man.
We're playing a screw here.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
The MC cut out, but there's no pants.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
It's not hard.

Speaker 6 (20:45):
That's a great job of owning the system, owning the
whole operation and running the show the right way. That's great.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
That's a scene from the most recent episode of The Hunt.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
Are behind the scenes documentary style show an hour long,
So you want.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
To get ready for the season. I'll get hyped up
seeing all that goes into age one.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
It's worth pointing out that on Sunday, it's also it's
the first game for Liam Cohen as the head coach.
It's the first game for each of his coordinators in
their role for that matter, for Tony Bisselli and for
James Gladstone. So there's a lot, I don't want to
say on the line, but there's a lot of preparation
and effort that's gone to get to this point where
this new regime takes center stage for the first time,

(21:32):
and it's made for an interesting week. Guys are working hard.

Speaker 6 (21:35):
It's been fun so far.

Speaker 1 (21:37):
Yeah, something's going.

Speaker 5 (21:38):
Here we go.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
It's gonna be a good one, all right, enjoy the game.
This weekend football is back. We'll be back on Monday
to recap everything for you here on Jasam

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
