Speaker 1 (00:17):
Welcome to jag zon this morning on Penani Stevens, Brian section,
John Osier with me. We also have a special guest
host will introduce in a moment. But Jaguar's riding high
on that week one win, but also turning the page
as we start to look towards Cincinnati this weekend. It's
still of some of the big things here today on
jag z Am, starting off with Trader James as a
big trade went down on Monday evening, becoming official on Tuesday. Brian,

(00:40):
but we talked about that crowded running back room, not
as crowded now, thanks by we traded up to Philadelphia
for a couple of draft picks to come back.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
We surprised by the move, No, I think it made
a lot of sense. And Ryan O'Halleran woke this in
the column, so I got to give him credit. Back
in mid August, Listen, it was too much value for
the Jaguars to pass on, to be able to take
a running back for whom there were not going to
be a substantial amount of carries, and to move him
for a fifth and sixth round pick next year. Now

(01:07):
they have thirteen picks. They have three in the third,
they've got two in the fourth, they've got two in
the fifth, they've got four in the seventh. That's great
value and that's what they were looking for overall. Remember
Travis etn is playing on the fifth year option and
is likely, no matter how good a year he has
this year, to be playing somewhere else because the Jaguars

(01:27):
used draft choices on ba shal Touton and Lequin Allen Junior.
The future here is set on those two guys. So
to be able to take Tank Bigsby and flip him
into two picks and put him in a situation where
he'll be happy in Philadelphia where they run the ball
a lot makes a lot of sense, James.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
That's und certainly not afraid to make any trades and
now stacking up those picks. So we'll have to see
what that turns into. Big thing Number two today is
going to be tail of the taste. Obviously, take the
first half of the week to look back at that
game against the Panthers and while Brian Thomas Senior did
have a touchdown a Russian touchdown, he only had one
reception and he wasn't overly involved. Coach Coon talked a
little bit about some of the miscommunications between Trevor Lawrence

(02:05):
and Brian Thomasior.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
I think we try to get him a touch on
the first or second drive of the game, first play
of the game, right, we don't convert it, throw him
a screen low doesn't come down with it. And then
the flow of the game, we missed him on an
inbreaker which he had a lot of room to run,
missed him on a corner route where he was fairly open,

(02:29):
and then missed you know, had the one on the
out of bounds. So you're talking about that's five catches
right there. That gets him into the flow of it.
It's just the way the game went, and you know,
we got to details of route running, timing, depth, the
quarterback protection, everything goes into it. So I fully anticipate
him being able to get going John.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
We's also success from the running backs in this game,
and even Trevor Lawrence running around a little bit. Brian
Thomas Enior had a rushing touchdown. But how do they
get more involved? Is it just getting on the same
page again with Trevor Lawrence.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Yeah, this is sort of a first world problem.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
You know, he won twenty six to ten, and I
thought Trevor in the first half had a lot of
good throws and a lot of good reads throwing the
ball downfield, and you got Jammy Brown involved. They tried
to get BTJ involved in the first play. I think
he has six or seven targets. I think there. I
think they'll continue to try to get everybody involved early.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
And then after that.

Speaker 5 (03:27):
I really think the reality of this offense is gonna
be You've got Travis Hunter, who's pretty good. You've got
Yammi Brown it's pretty good. You've got running backs pretty good,
You've got printing strange. I don't know that there's going
to be a huge serge or a huge need of
We've got to target Brian Thomas Junior seven or eight
times a game in order to be successful, and I

(03:49):
think it's a problem to take care of itself. He's
really good. The ball's gonna find him and he's gonna
have his games. But it's not gonna be last year
where mac Jones was feeding him twelve times a game.
That's not good and it's not necessary in this offense.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
We'll have to see how things evolve as the season
goes along. But good point, he did get a lot
of targets last year because he was the only option.
So now we'll do our final big thing today, which
is on to Cincinnati midweek. Start turning the page looking ahead.
Next opponent, it's going to be the Bengals. Now we're
gonna bring in our extra host today, marked up their
former linebackers fast to the Dagwars, but also a former
friends assistant with the Cincinnati Bengals. So we talked a

(04:24):
little bit about the defense pre show. We talked they
played great against the Panthers. Different story when you take
on the Bengals. A lot of targets there that are
of a different colgo. When we talked about Jamar Hayes
and Jamar Chase and T Higgins. So what are the
Daguars defenders going to be up for this week?

Speaker 6 (04:40):
Well, I'll tell you what. Thank you guy for letting
me be with you. They're loaded in terms of weapons.
I mean, shoot, when you look at what Jamar Chase
has meant to their offense, T Higgins, Mike Yoseki, they
added Noah Fant at tight end. The fact too that
in the running game they've had Chase Brown now active
in terms of both a runner and a receiver. So
they've got weapons across the board and speed and they're

(05:03):
gonna distribute that. In this past game again, their opening
game against Cleveland, they struggled a little bit. They didn't
meet their standard. So we're gonna get their best shot
in terms of what Joe burrowin the offense and company
are gonna try to present to the Jaguars.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Excellent. All right, we're happy to have you here. Mark.
We're gonna talk a little bit more specifically about what
the Bengals bringing to the table and week tune what
the Jaguars are gonna need to do to get a
win in week two. So say with us here on
jag Zam jag zambrock you by Field to Auto Group,
Seafield's first Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group. Head over to

(05:39):
Fields Auto Dot. Come up, we'll go back ato jags
Am here midweek. We're getting ready for week two already,
but we should still enjoy the victory from week one.
We try to turn the page and get prepared though.
Mark Dufner joining us today and a perfect time for
you to join us. Obviously a longtime coach to the Jaguars,
but you were in Cincinnati as well, so we can
kind of pick your brain a little bit about what's

(06:00):
going on in Cincinnati this week.

Speaker 6 (06:01):
Well, I'm happy to share with you right now, and
I know for a fact right now that they're in there.
Even though today is an off day for the players
at the offensive particularly the offensive players are receivers, a quarterback,
they're all in there in the walk through where going
through their footwork, catching tennis balls, doing all the little
things to try to improve their game, to up their skills.
So they didn't I think they felt like they didn't

(06:23):
meet their standard coming out in the first game against
the Browns. It's in terms of explosive plays and things
of that nature. So they're in there working hard right
now in full respect for the challenge playing the Jaguars.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Tell us about Joe Burrow. We've talked at length about
him on the practice field. He's one of those guys
that because the Bengals haven't gone deep into the playoffs
except that one Super Bowl year, people tend to forget
that when you talk about Mahomes and Josh Allen and
Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow is right there at the top with.

Speaker 6 (06:51):
Them, absolutely, And I'll tell you right now. I'm very
pleased that I had the opportunity to be around this guy.
I mean the attention to detail he does, competitiveness to work, ethic,
the study, the leadership, trying to improve his skills that
he does just off the charts. He is as tough
as they come. I called him Buckets because he'd go

(07:11):
into the games and he'd take shots, and he put
himself out there to try to make plays and to
move the offense in a way I haven't changed, so
I never could try to crack in the guy in
terms of something that wasn't good, wasn't something that I
highly respect him.

Speaker 7 (07:24):
I mean he is off the chart.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
Yeah, full disclosure.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
Outside of the fifty three players for the Jaguar, he's
my favorite.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
NFL player right now. I love the way the guy plays.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
And if I'm wondering from Afar, my sense is this
is a guy that maybe everybody in.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
Their locker room doesn't love him or is his best friend.
Maybe he is.

Speaker 5 (07:46):
My guess is he doesn't care about that, And my
guess is he's a guy that everybody in that locker
room believes as long as he's in the game, they
have a chance to win him at his score.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
He's that kind of inspirational.

Speaker 6 (07:56):
Leader without a doubt, John, I mean, there's no doubt
about that. I know they go as Joe goes, and
they're gonna follow him anywhere, any place, and they have
great respect for him.

Speaker 7 (08:07):
You're right, he doesn't really care about anybody else, thinks.

Speaker 6 (08:09):
His focus and his determination and trying to make the Jaguar,
I mean, make the Bengals be the best they possibly
can be.

Speaker 7 (08:15):
As off the.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Chart we talked a little bit about them. They've had
slow starts right to the season before, probably didn't play
the way that they wanted to play last week against
the Browns, still got the win. You can't underestimate them
going in though, because Joe Burrow has the ability to
kind of flip that switch.

Speaker 6 (08:30):
Without a doubt. And I promise you, like I said,
we're gonna get their best shot. I promise you that
they're happy to be one. And oh, they kind of
got that monkey off their back, but they didn't, don't.
I know, they don't think they played as well across
the board offensively or defensive as they think they can
and they want to try to rectify that. No matter
who their playing, their focus is it's really about us,

(08:50):
meaning they're thinking about the Bengals and how they can
get better on offense, defense and special teams, and I
suspect it's a scene for us right now on the
Jaguars down there downstairs as they're prepared, and it's about us.
How we can get better at moving the ball, how
we get better at stopping them, how we can get
better at field positions and special teams.

Speaker 7 (09:06):
All those will be the focus this week.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
If you were in the meeting room here and on
the practice field here, how would you advise teams this
team to get ready for Jamar Chase and t Higgins.

Speaker 6 (09:17):
Well, you you know, you've got to still rely on
your fundamentals.

Speaker 7 (09:21):
I mean, I think if you get too you.

Speaker 6 (09:24):
Know, over anxious about what they're gonna do, you're gonna
lose focus and they're gonna beat you badly as far
as that's concerned. So you're gonna have to still rely
on fundamentals, have your eyes where they've got to be,
Concentrate on understanding what your job is, and do your job.
They're tough, you know, I've never seen Jamar Chase get
taggled by the first defender ever and I mean, this

(09:46):
guy can make you miss in a minute, and that's terrific.
And then t Higgins always says a way of coming
up to make the play. He'll go up and get
the ball when you don't think he can. So fundamentals
being where you should be. In other words, executing a defense.
Execution is going to be paramount against these guys. And
and Burrow has a way of finding ways to win.
You know, he's he finds the guys and so all

(10:08):
those things.

Speaker 7 (10:09):
It's gonna challenge.

Speaker 6 (10:10):
Every team that plays him to be at their best.
Henderson highly competitive guy. Trey is another one right now
that he thinks he can't be blocked. I promise you
he's another one that's in there today when they don't
have to be studying working on movement, is get off
all the little things that are going to make a difference.

(10:31):
So again, he commands your attention, that's for sure. And
he not only in terms of pass rushing, effecting the quarterback.
He can set the edge and you know, play good
run defense too. So and they used him a lot
in the game. I watched that game closely. He played
over fifty snaps more than you might think in terms
of an elite pass rusher, and he helped him as
far as that's concerned. So he's certainly a guy that

(10:53):
will command our offense's attention.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
We talked a little bit about what Liam Cohen did
in that in that Week one contest in terms of
play calling. If you were kind of trying to game
plan for that offense, is that something you look at
just week one? Do you look at what he did
in Tampa all of it together, or do you focus
on something else?

Speaker 7 (11:12):
No, I think what you ask is a great question.

Speaker 6 (11:15):
Ky I would focus on what he did in Tampa,
especially in the latter part of the season, and then
clearly in this first game, and he showed a lot
of what his DNA is and really, I mean in
the first drive of the game the other day. So
they're going to run the football, they're gonna be physical,
they're gonna challenge you with distribution of the ball, quick throws, screens,
he ran four screens. He's gonna challenge you with bootleg pass,

(11:37):
faking the run and having a quarterback get out on
the move. And then he's got all these weapons now
that you've added. So I think that again, you know,
Al Golden's going to have his hands full with what
he sees from this offense, and he'll be very organized
in detail too, and his approach trying.

Speaker 7 (11:54):
To stop it.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Thought that the Jaguars, they're obviously the more physical team
on Sunday, but I thought they display the physical ability,
the physicality as coaches like to say, to be able
to line up and play that way every Sunday. How
hard is that to do.

Speaker 7 (12:09):
It's tough. It can be tough, you know, there's no
doubt about that. Where in Terear.

Speaker 6 (12:14):
It takes on your body, the mental state of mind
you've got to be to be a fit in the
most physical team. But that's where it's won. And they
won the game in the trenches the other day in
terms of you saw it in terms of the run game.
You saw it in terms of pass protection. I'm talking
about the offensive line, no hits on the or one
hit on the quarterback, no shacks the defense, in terms
of rallying to get the run game stopped.

Speaker 7 (12:33):
So that I think it's tough to do.

Speaker 6 (12:36):
But that's a challenge teams that want to be great
have to meet.

Speaker 5 (12:39):
You know, def I haven't had a chance to talk
to you much since you've been working with us. I
know you've been digging deep into the Jaguars and probably
like studying for an exam, right, like learning this team defensively,
give me one thing that just sort of stands out
about this defense that you'll like.

Speaker 7 (13:00):
Well. I really liked their energy and effort. There was
good pursuit in the game.

Speaker 6 (13:04):
They're tackling for the first game I thought was excellent,
and that's critical critical components.

Speaker 7 (13:10):
You win with fundamentals, and I saw them out there.
They gave up maybe.

Speaker 6 (13:13):
Three explosive plays, one on a quarterback scramble. And when
you have little or few explosive plays, that means assignment wise,
guys are in the right spot. You don't have coverage
bus or misfits.

Speaker 7 (13:24):
In the run game, Jew but I.

Speaker 6 (13:26):
Think had one run that was over fifteen yards, and
that can happen.

Speaker 7 (13:30):
He aren't a good runner.

Speaker 6 (13:31):
But I was impressed with their alignment, assignment adjustment, which
they had addressed in the preseason. I was impressed with
their ability to get the ball off them. They got
three takeaways, which three generally equate to a win. They
had fourth down stops twice. I think that were again
critical and of course of the game, the offense scored
ten points off the takeaways, So I really liked what

(13:53):
I saw, you know, totally. I liked how hard they played,
They seemed to trust each other. I like the way
that Anthony called the game to run in our pressure
and coverage together, where the quarterback as the game went on,
had his eyes trying to find a rush.

Speaker 7 (14:07):
And struggle in terms of being able to move the ball.

Speaker 1 (14:09):
Just a nice change of pays on defense to see
what they've turned into talking about it in the training
camp and seeing it executed in week one. Mark, thanks
for joining us so far. We're going to talk a
little bit more about the division as we check in
on the AFC South coming up after the break. For
twelve years, dream Finders Homes have been proud to call

(14:29):
themselves the official home builders of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Visit dreamfinders'
Homes dot com for all of the available inventory and
go Jags. Looking back into Jags Am here midweek as
we're looking back a little bit on last week, but
also looking forward now, we're going to look a little
bit around the AFC South and see what went down
within the division, so we'll know where everybody's at. First

(14:50):
of all, John, the Colts beats Dolphins and boo them out.
But the Colts really good or the Dolphins really bad
or combo both.

Speaker 5 (14:56):
Well, it's so hard to tell and not definitely tell
you this too week one. It's so hard to draw
a conclusion like that. My senses, they may be a
little similar to the Jaguars, who beat a team that
I feel like they should have beaten handled business, which
is what you want to do. It feels a little
bit like the Dolphins may be in for a struggle

(15:16):
this year.

Speaker 4 (15:17):
But the Colts, I think there was some inspiration involved.

Speaker 5 (15:21):
They had a halftime ceremony for Jim Mersey, so I
think there was some adrenaline there in the building for that.

Speaker 4 (15:28):
Peyton was back, so I mean there was a little
bit of energy there.

Speaker 5 (15:33):
But look, the Colts were a good team last year
that really never figured out the quarterback position. Daniel Jones
could be sort of a renaissance story, so this may be.

Speaker 4 (15:44):
There may be legit maybe something to watching him. Listen.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
I thought that Daniel Jones was a solid contributor of
addition in the offseason because of Jonathan Taylor Duff and
when you look at Jonathan Taylor. He is an outstanding
running back. And because they've struck in Indian he's had
an ankle injury that has kind of lingered through the
last two or three seasons, people may have forgotten how

(16:08):
good he is. But when you have a competent quarterback
who has that kind of a running back behind him,
and the Colts offensive line, he's still fundamentally a good group.
They're going to be a hard out. They're going to
be a really difficult team for people to handle because
that quarterback can move too.

Speaker 6 (16:22):
No question, Daniel Jones played like Indiana Jones. I mean
Jesus Pete. He found ways to make plays and they
made him in bunches. And then on defense, I mean
that game was dominant early on for the defense that
lou Ana Roumo dialed up for them.

Speaker 7 (16:35):
I mean, Miami.

Speaker 6 (16:36):
Couldn't move the ball, lick, And so I thought that
really the Colts offense and defense working together really put
forth a tremendous effort and held on to that thing
almost for the whole sixty minutes.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
Yeah, well, you know, I saw that the Colts were
the first teams it's nineteen seventy seven to score on
every one of their possessions in a single game.

Speaker 7 (16:54):
Unbelievable. Yeah, I mean it was unbelievable.

Speaker 6 (16:56):
I'm glad I wasn't on the other side of that now,
but I mean that was very efficient production on offense
from defense for the Colt start.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
NOWT definitely not a fun spot to be from Miami,
that's for sure. Let's look at the Texans a little bit.
A lot of people's favorites to win the division but
drop their season.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
Opener to the Rams.

Speaker 1 (17:15):
Some struggles on offense for CJ. Stroud and just their
defense is obviously very good, but their offense has a
lot of holes. Brian and we talked about that offensive
line with a deal with injuries as well, that's been
hurting them.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
More well, and Duff can talk about Joe Mixon and
what he needs, and he's obviously out right now and
that has hurt them.

Speaker 1 (17:35):
But I was.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
Impressed by what I saw from Mit Chubb, who has
had serious d jury in the last two years, and
he had a couple of ten yard runs. I think
he had thirteen carries for sixty yards. If he can
come back and keep them balanced, you can keep CJ.
Stroud on his feet and then I mean he's an
electrofnic player. We know that mix it out really hurts
them though.

Speaker 7 (17:56):
No doubt.

Speaker 6 (17:57):
I mean Joe is an outstanding back both protection and
coming out of the backfield, catching them just running the ball.

Speaker 7 (18:02):
I'd love having that opportunity to be with him.

Speaker 6 (18:06):
But what you said about Chubb is strong too. That
guy into a pain that back then too. All he
does is go north and south and make plays and
getting sixty six yards whatever it was, and the ballgame
was again a productive DESIPI.

Speaker 5 (18:18):
Yeah, it'll be interesting to me to see what the
texting has become. Offensively, Stroud has some comments after the
game about, you know, we were lilly gagging a little bit.
I mean, I'm paraphrasing it, and I called a.

Speaker 4 (18:29):
Wake up call.

Speaker 5 (18:31):
They had trouble last year sort of becoming what they
wanted to be offensively. So they're an interesting storyline. I
think they are the favorite in the division. They're a
physical team and when these two teams play in a
couple of weeks, that's gonna.

Speaker 4 (18:45):
Be where it's decided. But CJ.

Speaker 5 (18:47):
Stroud and that offense, they're dangerous because he's really good.

Speaker 4 (18:52):
When can they get to what they want to be.
It feels like that's their challenge early.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Well, and they're undergoing some sort of a metamorphosis at
white receiver. I mean, Stefon Diggs has moved on. He's
playing in New England this year. And Tangdell suffered that
horrendous injury in the playoff game in Kansas City last year.
And Nico Collins, who is a Pro Bowl caliber player
and a really difficult guy to handle, was a non
factor in Los Angeles. And I didn't see the game,
so I don't know whether it's because they just tilted

(19:18):
everything in his direction. It would make sense when the
other two guys aren't there, go get Nico Collins and
get him out of the game. But right now they've
got question marks at receiver. Dn Schultz, their tight end
is their number one target.

Speaker 4 (19:29):
Yeah, there's some frustration there. That'll be interesting to see
how they You hope that they don't figure it out
until week four.

Speaker 6 (19:36):
Yeah, amen to that, John, What you say is right.
I already looked at that film. Yeah, and they just
couldn't get in rhythm and they just and that a
lot of it was they were stopping themselves, you know,
no disrespected the opponent, but in the rams, but they
stopped themselves.

Speaker 7 (19:50):
So they're struggling right now.

Speaker 6 (19:52):
We hope that it becomes an internal itch on them.
Right now, part of the offensive line, as you talk about.
I think their center was banged up a little bit.
They had tackle another player got hurt, so it starts
there too, But they just didn't get in sync.

Speaker 7 (20:04):
And we hope that continues.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
And by the way, I don't think Christian Kirk is
supposed to play for the first month.

Speaker 1 (20:07):
Of the season as well, which you know can linger
with him sometimes that he's been injured a couple times
the last couple of seasons here in Jacksonville. All right,
let's close things out the Titans. Cam Ward makes his debut.
I think made some good decisions. Obviously, with a rookie quarterback.
Do you try to just pressure him.

Speaker 6 (20:24):
As much as you can, try to do everything you
can to make sure he's not can't see things you
want Sure, we want to disguise him. We want to
get him wondering what's going on, so we can't produce sure.

Speaker 4 (20:36):
So he had some strong throws, stayed in the pocket.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
He has some strong arm. But Calvin Ridley had a
couple of drops, had a couple other drops from his
wide receivers. That makes it hard as a rookie quarterback
when you're already going up against that. But Denver Broncos
defense tough too, So the Titans fault for the Broncos
in their season opener as well.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
Well, I think correct if I'm wrong. He got sacked
six times. He was never able to set his feet
and be comfortable because the Broncos defensive front is really
good and the Titans offensive line, you know, they brought
in the big tackle from Pittsburgh. They's pent sixty million
bucks on him, and they have the right tackle that
they dropped from Alabama last year. But they're still in
flux with their offensive line, and you know, doctor trying

(21:16):
to make the transition from cave man football where they
just beat the hell out of you with Derek Henry
right to a more modern offense that doesn't happen.

Speaker 7 (21:24):
Overnight, not even close.

Speaker 6 (21:26):
And that's it again, getting everybody to gel together right now.
I mean they they struggled running the football. Like you said,
Denver gave that quarterback a lot of different looks, so
as you said, he couldn't get set right now, he's
got feeling pressure, he's getting hit six sacks. I mean,
it was just again trying to get going. Anything get
going was uphill and toughs lading for him.

Speaker 4 (21:45):
I only saw highlights. The highlights I saw.

Speaker 5 (21:47):
Late involved a really good Denver defense with a rookie
quarterback who at times late was fleshed enough that he held
the ball too long, which is sort of if you're
writing the script.

Speaker 4 (21:59):
For that game, how that's gonna go would have been
how you thought. But it looked to me like.

Speaker 5 (22:05):
The first three or four games you expect that from
rooky quarterback Like that, he looked like the arrows up,
you know.

Speaker 6 (22:12):
I think the other thing that rookies don't understand until
they get in the season is the speed of the game.
It's a little different in preseason. Each and every week
it gets faster, and then when you get into the
season it picks up then and it picks up as
the season goes on. So for young players, first time players,
speed of all that's going on, it's hard to underestimate that.

Speaker 4 (22:31):
It came in a couple of players where it looked like, oh,
that guy's here already.

Speaker 7 (22:34):
Yeah, well, no, that's right.

Speaker 4 (22:36):
That happens.

Speaker 7 (22:37):
Never good.

Speaker 1 (22:38):
All right, stick with us one more break and we'll
tell you what's coming up the rest.

Speaker 4 (22:40):
Of the week.

Speaker 1 (22:45):

Speaker 3 (22:54):
Some footwork things, you know, there was a couple on
the mistargeted throws that you know, if you look at
he's nineteen at thirty one. We missed four screens, no,
three screens on O Maha to Diami on the right sideline,
and then you talk about the one to BT. It's

(23:15):
like a few of those, and he's twenty five at
thirty one for two hundred plus. And now you're talking
it's not about the stats, it's about the balance. You know,
it's about the balance. And so if you're sitting there
saying he could have been twenty five or thirty one
for two hundred plus and you try to eliminate the turnover,
you're sitting there saying he had a damn good game.

(23:36):
So what's nice is that I thought he operated the
offense really well. I thought he had a great command,
He used his cadence. We got the free play response.
There were some really good things that did show up.

Speaker 1 (23:50):
They tooked tween Cohen talking a little bit about what
he saw when he looked at the tape of Trevor
Lawrence's performance, described him as solid but obviously, pointing out
a couple of throws that were missed, things that switch
the tide on. It looks a lot better, Brian, when
you looked back at Trevor's performance, solid.

Speaker 2 (24:06):
But more to do well the second half. Obviously he
wasn't as efficient, and that's got to be The word
is consistency, right, stuff. You've got to be consistent from
the start of the game to the end of the game.
And you can point to the long layoff or whatever
it is. I don't know that anybody's made any excuses
for it. But in the first half he was better

(24:28):
than he was in the second. So there's a lot
of upside there. And I think if you go back
and look at last year when Liam was in Tampa,
Baker Mayfield really took off after Week four. That's when
all of a sudden you started to go, wow, look
at what he's doing. So there's a curve that we
haven't quite got to yet, and John, part of that
is you've got to get into the meeting rooms and

(24:49):
you've got to make corrections, and you've got to coach,
and you've got to get him closer to where you
want him to be with respect to the offense and
the game plan.

Speaker 5 (24:57):
Well, you can win with the guy in the first half.
You can win with the guy in second half if
you have a big lead. So he struggled in the
third quarter. But I think the big thing with Trevor
that you saw when it was going right and when
they kept him out of the gray in the first half.
Like Leam likes to talk about, they were throws he made.

(25:17):
There were decisions he made. They were very positive. I
thought it was a good way to build. But you
can't have stretches like he had in the third quarter
against the teams they're about to start playing from week
two to week eight.

Speaker 1 (25:31):
All right, busy week coming up. Who are you guys
talking to this week? What do you got going on?

Speaker 5 (25:35):
I'm supposed to have Jordan Lewis nasone podcast. I'm excited
about it. I did not have him on it in
the off season, and I have not a chance to
talk to him a whole lot, but as impressive as
you can be coming in as a free agent. And
he's got a great story. What was almost a career
ending injury in twenty three or so where he basically

(25:55):
shattered his foot. And I'm not going to compare him
to Kalais because that was a special.

Speaker 4 (26:01):
Thing in twenty seventeen.

Speaker 5 (26:03):
But this guy's impact as a leader as a free
agent is pretty impressive.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
I'm going to talk to Sean Sharrott, the offensive line coach,
and Duff we were talking about it. The offensive line
in his first game together with a couple of new
starters and a new coach and a new scheme. It's
pretty impressive how physical they were able to play.

Speaker 6 (26:20):
Oh my gosh, you got rush for two hundred yards.
The quarterback doesn't get shocked, he gets one hit in
the game. I mean, excellent, very very good as far
as were concerned. A couple penalty things, but that's gonna happen.
Some of that was just over aggression. But jeez, I
think you'd be very happy with that guy.

Speaker 5 (26:36):
That's a good Sunday night for an offensive line coach, right, Yeah,
absolutely it is.

Speaker 2 (26:40):
And you can appreciate the fact that offensive line coaches
are interesting to talk to.

Speaker 4 (26:44):
You never know what you're getting, right.

Speaker 2 (26:46):
You might get the guy who's happy coming off of performance,
but he might just be like they call him the
mushroom society right there in the.

Speaker 7 (26:53):
Dark and get over it.

Speaker 2 (26:55):
He might be a little little crankedy. He might want
his guys to play just a little bit harder, or
you know, not be so full of themselves. I don't know.
I'm just throwing it out there, but offensive line coaches
are the most interesting assistant coach interviews that I have
ever done in thirty plus.

Speaker 5 (27:09):
Years of doing this.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
All the hard working out of the glory.

Speaker 5 (27:12):
Right.

Speaker 1 (27:12):
So it's a line as motto, Mark, you will be
back on happy Hour. You've been on Thursday happy Hours
with JP and Jeff. I imagine you'll have a full
game plan by.

Speaker 7 (27:20):
Then for them looking forward to it.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
Yes, I will, absolutely, Well we have we're happy to
have you on am.

Speaker 2 (27:24):
The doors right over there and you tell me where
to walk in.

Speaker 6 (27:28):
To get out, well that's no saying.

Speaker 4 (27:35):
It's right there.

Speaker 2 (27:35):
If you want to come through it, come through.

Speaker 7 (27:36):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 4 (27:37):
All right, Mark will be back for happy Hour.

Speaker 1 (27:38):
We will be back on Thursday. As well as we
talk more Bengals here on jack zam
