Speaker 1 (00:17):
Gets the Bengals on Sunday afternoon, and the Jaguars find
themselves john in a position to face a really potent offense.
We're talking about one that, when it is functioning on
all cylinders, is as good as any in professional football.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Well, they have great quarterback, they have great receivers, They're tough,
they're resilient. They started slow in recent years, they seem
to be very determined not to do that. I think
it's a dangerous matchup. I think Jaguars can win if
they play physically. But it's certainly a bigger task than
last week ry.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
But I know a lot of people are thinking, well,
it's a slow start, that's something they've seen from Zach
Taylor and his team in recent years. But I think
it's worth pointing out that the Cleveland Browns are an
excellent defense, maybe one of the best two or three
in professional football. So it means that the Jaguars, who
played well last week against an underwhelming offense, have really

(01:11):
got to take their game up a level. So the
pressure would seem to be important this week. We saw
it last week from Josh Allen, who had eight. We
didn't see a lot of saccually Duan Smoot got there
this week. You're talking about guys having to get.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Home well, and anybody who's followed football in the last
two or three years knows that the way to get
Cincinnati is to pressure Burrow. The problem is when you
pressure him, he's still usually good in the face of
that pressure. So you've got to get interior pressure, and
then when you get a chance at him, you got
to get him down. And then once you get him down,

(01:45):
you have to get him down again and again and again.
Because I said it all week, he's one of the
few guys in the NFL who you can hit, get down,
sack him seven or eight times and he still beats you.
So you've got to have a competitive stamina, is my phrase.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Brian was very good phrase, and the three of us
were all just in Anthony Campanelli, the defensive coordinator's press conference,
and he talked about the difference between sacking Joe Burrow,
which is very difficult to do, and pressuring Joe Burrow,
which means moving him off the spot, making him look
for his second option, sometimes even his third. They have
to get pressure and there's an opportunity for them to

(02:19):
get pressure. Tie with Eric Armstead, who last week was
working against guards who are amongst the best in the
NFL in Carolina. This week, they're not as good as
those Carolina guards. So the Jaguars know if they're gonna
get pressure, it's gonna have to start inside with their
interior guys, because the tackles in Cincinnati are big and athletic.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
We talked a lot about what the Bengals are going
to look like this week. Let's talk a little bit
about what the Jaguars are going to look like. We
have big things brought to you by GEAJ Government Employees
Health Association, So we'll start with a big thing, number two,
because run it back. We talked a ton about what
the run defense looked, the run game looked like for
the Jaguars. Putting two hundred yards rushing into this game,
Brian a Trade tanks Bigsby, but track had today. We've

(03:01):
seen a ton out of those rookies. I imagine this
is going to be a focus that I'm going forward
to still put a huge emphasis on the run.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Williston. We've talked at length guy about Travis etn and
the training camp that he had, the way he performed
during the preseason and We saw it early last week
that he is all of a sudden attacking between the tackles,
which I never gave him a lot of credit for.
I didn't think he was very good at it. But
last week the offensive line was exceptional and it allowed
Travis to play both inside and out and of course

(03:29):
the cut that he made on that seventy one yard
where he went back inside before making it outside again.
He's playing at a very high level and John. They
have a lot of confidence in Baseheal Tutan and Leaquin
Allen Junior. They feel like they are ready to go.
Will they run for two hundred yards every week? No,
but will they be able to run when they want
to run, which is what Robert Hainsey told me last week.

(03:52):
If the center is right, they should be able to
do that.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Yeah, they love to. I think the trade of Bigsby
was far more about how much they like Etn in
this offense and where they think Tuton can go. It
seemed last week that the plan was to alternate Travis
and Tank a little bit. Well, they really want to
get Tutin in that I'm called a rotation, but in
the back and forth as one of the top two backs,

(04:17):
it ain't Touton can match Etn in terms of productivity.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Well, he's so patient, right, I mean for a young
runner to be willing to let things evolve, you don't
see that all the time. And then his first step
that get up and go kai. I mean, man, he
goes from zero to sixty in just a second or two.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
I'm excited to see with given some extra carries. Now
as the offense kind of evolves, as this goes along,
what Touton's going to be able to do? So our
final big thing, which is more to proof great for
the Daguars to get a win over the Carolina Panthers
this week. The Bengals are going to be putting up
a different kind of product, a different kind of thing
they're going to need to deal with. Trevor Lawrence analyze
the defense a little bit for Cincinnati.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Getting their hands on some passes and getting some turnovers.
Those were b in the right spot at the right time.
Guys making plays kind of changed the game. Obviously. You
know with Hendrickson, always have to know where he's at.
And he's a great player, has proven himself in this
league time and time again, so give him his respect. Obviously,
with with our preparation and just knowing where he's at.

(05:17):
He's a really good player and you know, have to
take care of him, so that's obviously something there. And
just the defense was flying around. I think made a
lot of plays, did a nice job in the run game,
you know, really, like I said, great, and turnovers in
the back end that's the name of the game, and
they created a couple of them. So it's good defense
that's flying around. A few of the guys have been
there for a while, a bunch the leaders.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
On that defense, Bengals defense, and nothing to write home
about the last couple of years. They've got a new
coordinator in there. The Bengals in Week one are looking
a lot different than they did last season. John, when
we look at this for what Trevor's needs to kind
of we saw him look confident and under control in
the system last week. This is gonna be a different

(05:57):
kind of challenge for him. What are we you hoping
to see?

Speaker 2 (06:00):
I got some travel estates, well, I think he said,
more and more consistency. The Steven goes on. I thought
he played fine in the first half. I thought he
played fine in the fourth quarter. He didn't play well
in the third quarter on Sunday, but he looked into
control of the offense. He looked like a guy who
was making overall good decisions and missed a couple of throws.

(06:22):
So I was fine with the way he played. I
think they can get through the other part of their
schedule with him playing that way. Brian, as long as
they run, play good defense the whole thing. He needs
time to get used to this offense, gain confidence, and
then as you go forward, he can elevate from there.
I think after four or five games of sort of

(06:42):
staying out of the gray, and then once he gets
into what Liam Cohne calls the gray, he'll be better
in the great Ryan Well.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
If he's going to figure it out, he's going to
have to have time to throw, and that leans with
the Draguars up front, are going to have to help
Walker a little. With Trey Hendrickson, he is an absolute
game wrecker. And if you go back two years to
the twenty twenty three game, he was the guy through
Walker little into Trevor Lawrence and set the injury bug
in motion. So I think you had can count on
Anton Harrison to take care of the guy on the

(07:08):
other side to give him time. But ninety one is
the elite, So two is Logan Wilson, the middle linebacker
number fifty five. Those two guys are the guys that
are going to wreck your game plan if you don't
prepare upfront. The good news, KaiA is is the offensive
line played a really good game against a solid defensive
front last week. They should be able to handle the

(07:28):
challenge this week if they can help Walker Little.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Have to help Walker Little. Coming up, going forward, we're
going to check in go behind Enemy Lines. I check
in with the Bengals reporter to see exactly.

Speaker 5 (07:40):
What we can expect this week.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
Welcome back to jag Zam, brought to you by Field's
Auto Group Seefields First, Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group. Head
over to Fieldsauto dot Com another edition of Behind the
Enemy Lines. It's Week two. The Jaguars are heading to Cincinnati,
so I'm checking into my counterpart team reporter with the Bengals,
Marissa Gontapelli. Thank you so much for joining us. Excited
for week two. Both teams want to now going into this,

(08:13):
I think both of them fail. They can play better
football than maybe they played in Week one.

Speaker 5 (08:17):
But from your.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
Perspective, what did the Bengals do against the Browns and
what are they looking to change in Week two?

Speaker 5 (08:23):
Yes, and first off, thank you for having me.

Speaker 6 (08:25):
Love that we're able to catch up before Sunday's matchup.
And when you look at what the Bengals did in
Week one, I think the most important thing coming out
of that game was that they won the football game.
It's been a struggle for Zach Taylor since twenty nineteen
to get off to a fast start and that was
something that was really stressed going into Week one. Just
come away with the win. It wasn't the prettiest of wins.

(08:46):
When you look at the offensive side of the ball,
the Bengals are very uncharacteristic of what we've known Joe
Burrow to do in the Joe Burrow era. The fact
that t Higgins and Jamar Chase each only had two
and three receptions very uncharacteristic. But the biggest takeaway I
took from that game was the defensive performance. All off
season long, we have heard how the Bengals want to
improve defensively. Brought in new DC Al Golden to you know,

(09:09):
get that group under his wing, and it showed the
fact that they had two huge takeaways when it mattered
there in the second half, and most importantly, stopping the run,
held the Browns to under fifty rushing yards, averaging two
yards to carry. The defensive line played really well in
Week one, and that's something I'm going to be looking
ahead to this week, especially.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
With what the Jags did on the ground in their.

Speaker 6 (09:31):
First game, to see how that Bengals defensive line and
especially that front seven holds up from Week one into
Week two.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
Yeah, definitely a lot of focus on the run on
both for both of these teams in week one. Thing
about Joe Burrow, as we know I'm sure you're familiar
with over the years, he bounces back really well. So
maybe didn't play great in Week one. I assume that'll
be a focus going into Week two. Is that part
of what makes him so special, just his ability from
week to week, like you know, you can kind of
flip that switch.

Speaker 6 (09:56):
Absolutely, It's part of his Joe Cool swagger in a
sense too, where it's just nothing phases him. And the
thing when you look at Joe two just over his
career is he only gets better. He plays his best
ball in November and December and I know we have
a long ways to get to until that point, but
I'm absolutely expecting him to come out firing a little
bit more on Sunday. I mean, even Zach Taylor has

(10:17):
talked about, you know, it was great to have the
defense stuff up the way that they.

Speaker 5 (10:21):
Did, like, Okay, we're going to get the offense going.
Offense has got your back, and.

Speaker 6 (10:24):
So I fully expect to see a different Bengals team
offensively than we did week one.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
We've been fortunate so far, not a ton on the
injury front. Are there any injury moves that you've been
dealing with, any changes going forward with the Bengals?

Speaker 5 (10:38):
No, thankfully. We have also for the most part, been healthy.

Speaker 6 (10:41):
Lucas Patrick, our right guard, did leave Cleveland's game with
an ankle injury at cash strain, so he will be
out for a handful of weeks. They placed him on
IR this week, so Dalton Risner is going to be
sliding into that right guard spot.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
But he came in very early in that game and
finished out.

Speaker 6 (10:56):
So that's really the only that's the biggest area of
conc Earn on the injury front.

Speaker 5 (11:01):
But outside of that, we were very healthy, very.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Good, and then As far as the Jaguars, they've got
a new offensive system in place. We saw a ton
on the run game, but they're going to be focusing
more I would imagine a little bit more focusing on
trying to spread things out with some of the new
weapons that they have. Defensively, I know that's last season,
you guys kind of changed them things out. How what
improvements have you seen specifically in terms of the new

(11:24):
system they haven't placed on defense?

Speaker 6 (11:26):
Yeah, absolutely, Well, A big one is just that stopping
the run. That was a huge point of emphasis in
the off season. They brought in TJ. Slayton to be
the nose tackle there to really kind of stuff that box.
Having Shamar Stewart, you know, get into the mix a
little bit there. He was pretty disruptive. He first round
draft pick for the Bengals back in April, so seeing
him on the edge and creating a little disruption was

(11:48):
definitely a good sign.

Speaker 5 (11:50):
But the biggest area that kind of.

Speaker 6 (11:52):
Like I at least thought so onto the defensive side
was when you look at the linebacker play.

Speaker 5 (11:57):
They brought in a handful of new guys.

Speaker 6 (12:00):
Orrin Burke's a veteran who came over from Philadelphia and
then two rookies, Demetrius Knight and Barrett Carter, and Demetrius
Knight played really well in his NFL debut. He started
opposite Logan Wilson at that linebacker spot, and that was really,
you know, a key going into the season was are
the Bengals going to get strong linebacker play?

Speaker 5 (12:19):
And I thought they did a nice job in Week one.

Speaker 6 (12:21):
Going to be seeing how they do now against Jacksonville
on Sunday. And then you even look at the secondary.
The Bengals lost Dax Hill and DJ Turner to season
ending injuries about halfway through in both of those corner spots,
and so having them back into the mix, and the
rotation has been absolutely huge. It's gonna make It's has
made a huge difference there in the secondary so far,

(12:43):
and I'm really eager to see how that rotation continues
to kind of evolve over the course of the season.
Because you have Cam Taylor Britt on the outside. You
have Fig Newton, who was a rookie last year, him
stepping into his second season, they're you know, looking for
him to fill some spots, and then Dax Hill and
DJ so between the four of those corners you were
expecting there to be a much more consistent cornerback play

(13:06):
than they had a season ago because they're finally healthy
back in that room.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
Okay, cool. And then my last one for me is
just do you have any players I'm sure Joe Burrows included,
but any big names that you're like they are someone
we're focusing on going in will be a big difference
in this game for the Bengals.

Speaker 5 (13:22):
That's a great question.

Speaker 6 (13:24):
Obviously, as you mentioned, Joe Burrow is always going to be,
you know, that first name and that big name, and
even Jamar Chase gets you know, roped into that category two.

Speaker 5 (13:31):
But I'm keeping my eye on Chase Brown.

Speaker 6 (13:33):
He had a really strong first half in Cleveland, especially
that opening drive. They went to him on not only
the ground game but also in the passing game that
he got in on that rushing touchdown to put that
first put a cap on that first drive. And I
just think he's so instrumental to what the Bengals look
to do on offense because of how versatile he is,

(13:54):
just such.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
A playmaker with the ball in his hands.

Speaker 6 (13:57):
He had averaged or was you know, posting over one
hundred scrimmage yards a game from Week ten on last
season once he you know, really took over that starting running.

Speaker 5 (14:06):
Back position spot.

Speaker 6 (14:07):
So I would really kind of keep focused on, you know,
Chase Brown and just what he is able to do,
how the Bengals you know, utilize him beyond just the
ground game on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
Very nice, All right, we're looking forward to that week too. Matchup, Marissa,
thanks for joining us. We'll see in Cincinnati.

Speaker 5 (14:23):
Thank you, looking forward to it.

Welcome to the future.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
We're going to do our best to predict the future
a little bit and tell you what we think the
headlines are going to be for this game on Monday. Bryan,
what do you think Melaka?

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Well, again, had this conversation with a number of people
who think, all right, that's a loss. You're going to Cincinnati,
you know, and they're leaning back into the Jaguars in
the last what twenty five twenty six games, you know,
twenty four and twenty three. And I work with a
different breed of cat because this Jacksonville team, led by
Leam Cohen, with Gladstone and Biselli setting the tempo and

(15:24):
the standard here, I think they are prepared to go play. Now,
will they win, I don't know, but I think that
they will go up and play good football on both
sides of the ball. And we got a good look
at this team last week against Carolina, and I know
that's another breed of cat, and that the Panthers aren't
that good of a football team, especially not compared to
the Cincinnai Bengals. But I expect the Jaguars to go
up there and play well. And I went with Jordan

(15:45):
Lewis because listen, that secondary at the end of twenty
twenty four was wounded and yet they've played so well
last week. Now they're going to have to play better
against the Bengals because that's a completely different breed of cat.
But I think that Jordan Lewis deserves a lot of
credit for the way in which he has helped transform
that unit mentally, physically. He tells me that they have

(16:07):
all the gifts. They've had all the gifts, but he
brought a different attitude to him, so different breed of
cat all Along plays off the Bengals plays off, the
Panthers plays off Jordan Right, There's a lot of different
angles to it. But I expect the Jaggers to go
play well and we'll see what that means.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Yeah, I think it's a big game for the reasons
you cite it beat Carolina, but there is a feeling, oh, well,
should be in carolinall There's no such thing as that
in the NFL. That's how people are sort of grasping it.
So I think we will learn is this a team
that can go on the road play well again after
they played well in the opener. I went with powering

(16:43):
through because I think right now, if this team is
gonna win, it's gonna win because they can out physical teams.
I wasn't sure we'd see that. We did see it
in Week one. So if they win, which I think
is a tough ask against the Cincinnati team that is
clearly focused on a good start, it's everything to them

(17:06):
but if they win over because they power through I
mean interior, the defensive line and on the offensive line
and the right and gain.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
For me, I think we're all a little not quite
sure what we're gonna see exactly. It's still early in
the season for me and for both of these teams
to have, you know, new coordinators. Knew everything here in Jacksonville,
new coordinator on defense in Cincinnati, and knowing how they
play early in the season, I'm not quite sure, but
I do know, and I feel like my focus is
going to be on the pass game for both teams.
So I say up for grabs. I'm featuring two ls

(17:36):
former LSU guys here Frontowns Junior and Jamar Chase. Jamar
is gonna get the ball. I know that, whether it's
a two hundred plus yard day with multiple touchdowns, that's
what the Dagwars need to avoid. They're gonna throw on
the ball. You have to win with the explosive. That's
what burned this team all of last year and early
late in the season before that. So different different secondary,

(17:57):
different different players out there. We talked about Jordan Lewis,
if they can limit some of what Jamar Chase does after.

Speaker 5 (18:03):
He gets the ball, that will be crucial.

Speaker 3 (18:05):
And I also think Brian Thomas needs to get more
involved obviously that you know, they talked about couple of miscommunications,
maybe a couple throws on Trevor weren't perfect. But this
team is best when Brian Thomas Junior is involved. I
know he had the rushing touchdown. I think they can
get him more involved. Obviously, the targets need to go
up a little bit, but I think Brian Thomas Junior
is going to need to play well because I think
you're gonna need some scoring to win insincenas, and.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
We talked about it with Mark Duffner yesterday. I mean,
Joe Burrow is that quarterback who puts fear in you,
right like Tom Brady used to, like Peyton Manning used to,
when the ball is in their hands late, especially with
t Higgins who is in and of himself a number
one receiver and Jamar Chase, you can go up and
play great football and in the span of thirty seconds

(18:48):
lose the game. So you're gonna have to put points
out this week.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
It's gonna be a lot of back and forth and
a lot of fighting through adversity, which we know is
important for this team to understand and battle through as
a single Wung says here we will tell you what's
coming up the rest of the week and give you
a preview with Sounds of the Game.

Speaker 5 (20:03):
Sounds of the game of a win.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
What Yes, John loves all the sounds though, loves the hunt,
loves all the production sounds in general. John, when we
go on the road, we've talked about this team battling
through adversity, whatever that might be. You know, a rain
delay of early penalties. Going on the road is a
little bit different. So is this something you think Coach
Coin is going to kind of address with them. I mean,

(20:27):
obviously it's a new regime, so it'll be talked about
in some regard, but going on the road against a
good team and getting a win. It takes a little
bit different kind of game plan.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
Yeah, it's a different test, and he will talk to
him about it. As I said earlier, I think we'll
learn something about this team this week in terms of
how much we saw in Week one was real. That
doesn't necessarily to me mean they have to win, Brian,
but you want to see a team that can go

(20:55):
up and stand toe to toe and feel like you're
on even footing with another very good team. I think
they'll handle the road well because I think the people
running this organization, I think Liam think they're focused on
the right things, and I think it's a professional football team,
and I think professional football team is generally handle the

(21:16):
road well.

Speaker 4 (21:17):
Well.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
It's important to do it.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
I said in the last SEGM, maybe a different breeded cat.
I think this Jacksonville team is different than the one
that we watched last year. In the second half of
twenty twenty three, Liam Cohen is building a resilient football team.
To lean on that word again, but back in the spring,
he told these teams they had to work on their
own resilience, they had to prepare themselves for adversity, and
he's used that word a lot this week in talking

(21:41):
about this game. I just in talking to the guys
in the locker room this week, they understand that. I
think they're ready for when they're down ten points, just
assuming that something like that happens, or you're up ten
points and all of a sudden you give up a
pick six, I mean, when something bad happens at that moment.
I think we're going to learn something about this football team,
how far they've come and be resilient. I think we
saw a step last week against Carolina. You enumerated all

(22:03):
the reasons on the Monday Show, but I think this game,
in particular, because it's Joe Burrow, it's in Cincinnati, on
the road, and it's the first road game for Liam,
I think we're gonna learn a lot about this team
this week.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
Ye if the good teams I've been around have approached
the road with a feeling of all right, we're gonna
go show these sixty thousand people what's what, and it
hasn't been a game when they go it's hey, we're good.
We're going to show you we're good, and we don't
care on the road. It's a subtle difference, but you
can't go thinking you're gonna have fun. You gotta go
thinking you're gonna win and show and show people what's what.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
It's a business trip, gentlemen. Enjoy the game this weekend.
We will be back on Monday here on jag Zam
to recap everything for you from Week two against the Bengals.
