Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to jag Vam on the surd Van sat down
in seasons Brian Sexton John Oser with us this morning
as we get ready for the first Divisional matchup of
(00:23):
the season for the Jaguars.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
The Texans are coming to town in week three, so
let's start out with our big Things, brought to you
by g e h A Government.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Employees Health Association bounce Back.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
We talked to Tom this week about Brian Thomas Senior's
performance against the Bengals being subpar, but his quarterback cover
lawrences He's not worried about it.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
It's football, I mean, it just it doesn't always go perfect.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
You know.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
Obviously we would love to start off hot these first
two games and our connection be you know, ripping and
me finding them everywhere and him having a great year
and all those things. But I mean we're in week two, everybody,
so I think we can all just take a deep breath,
give beat a little. You know, He's he's.
Speaker 5 (01:01):
Going to be just fine.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Not worried about him at all. It's just something we
got to continue to work at and you know, we're
gonna have a good plan for him each week to
be involved. And he's too good of a player to
not you know, be involved and make those plays down
the field that we all know he can make and
got all the confidence in the world in him and
excited for there's another opportunity for him this week.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
To get going.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Brian. Everyone's staying calm here. We're expecting a bounce back.
Speaker 5 (01:25):
Though.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I think we heard from BT in the locker room yesterday.
His demeanor seems better. I think everyone's expecting him to
turn the page going FORWA We were recired listening.
Speaker 6 (01:32):
If we'd had this conversation before training camp, begat who
is the player that you're most confident in what he
can do on Sunday afternoons, I think Brian Thomas Junior
would have been at we're near the top of the list.
Speaker 5 (01:43):
I still feel that way.
Speaker 6 (01:45):
I'm asked, as I'm sure you guys are everywhere you go, Hey,
what's up with number seven? None of us really know.
And according to Trevor and according to Liam and then
yesterday Brian in the locker room.
Speaker 5 (01:57):
Nothing. He's just got to get on track. So there's
no duty for him to bounce back. They need him
to bounce back.
Speaker 6 (02:02):
John though he's got a huge challenge this week because
the corner who's going to line up across from him.
Darryl Stingley Junior is as good a corner as there
is in the NFL. He might be the best corner
in the NFL. So this week, getting back on track
is going to require Brian Thomas Junior to play at
his best.
Speaker 7 (02:17):
Yeah, I mean and frankly, if he has a drops
on Sunday, I don't think anybody's really concerned. But he's
got to go strong for the ball in traffic and
he didn't do that last week for whatever reason. Maybe
it was the risk that was on the report this week,
maybe who knows, but he didn't and until he does that,
it's going to be a topic. I think he will
(02:38):
do that. I'm not really worried about it, but Kyle,
we have to see it.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
We're gonna have an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
This Sunday ties into our second big thing, which is
bully the bullies.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
The Texans have.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Been the bullies of the division for a while now,
but the Jaguars are going to try to make a
claim and set the tongue going forward. Liam Cohen talked
a little bit about what the Texans pass RUSS can do,
but also what he's expecting from the off and fly.
Speaker 8 (03:02):
Being in that division in LA with San fran right,
very very similar structure, the way that they come off
the rock, the way that they want to disrupt. We
have got to have another sound plan when it comes
to protecting the quarterback, but also in the run game,
you know, manufacture in different ways to manipulate those guys.
(03:24):
Like I said, it takes all eleven, but specifically the
way that they want to roll off and come off
the rock and play talented. Got a lot of respect
for the way that those guys play the game and
can be very disruptive, Brian.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
The Texas specifically on defense has been very physical. They
like to set that tone, try to intimidate, dominate early.
Is this an opportunity for the Jaguars to come out
and be physical and kind of show themselves as well.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Well.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
Absolutely it is.
Speaker 6 (03:50):
And of course the cheap hit last year by zero
the linebacker gives them that sort of.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
Juice, I suppose. But the Jaguars have.
Speaker 6 (03:59):
The number one rushing game in the NFL two weeks in,
and I get it, it's a small sample, but when
you consider that Liam Cohen said the day that he
signed on as the head coach here that that was
his priority, and when you consider how ineffective the running
game has been the last two years, to go from
near the bottom to the top in just two weeks
is a really good sign that the Jaguars can come
(04:20):
out and punch the Texans in the mouth figuratively and
get what they want done done. It also helps that
their run defense is top five right now, giving up just.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
Over eighty yards per game.
Speaker 6 (04:31):
The Jaguars were going to change their personality under Liam Cohen.
I didn't know that it would get done so quickly,
but it's been good to see.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
All right. Our final big thing today is going to
be more of the same.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
We've talked a ton about what this defense has looked
like for the Jaguars this year compared to last year,
and takeaways has been the name of the game.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
John.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
When you see that, you know they're mirroring their totals
of takeaways from last year. I have to imagine that's
still going to be a focus going into this one.
Trying to get extra opportunities for the offense.
Speaker 7 (04:56):
Yeah, and stopping the runs. Heeded at when you stopped
the ryn, you put teams in passing situations when you
know teams are gonna pass, you have a bigger chance
to intercepting the ball. Look, I don't expect them to
get three takeaways a game that's fifty one and that
starts to get up into stratospheric all time stuff. I
do expect them to be a disruptive defense that is
(05:17):
watching the ball when it's in the air because they're
in zone a lot. So I think they'll get takeaways.
They've never intercepted C. J.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
Stroud.
Speaker 7 (05:25):
You're not going to continue or you're not gonna be
able to beat a team very often if you never
intercept their quarterbacks.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
It's a big storyline.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Sounds like we're do John, That's what exactly what it
sounds like. I'll stay with us here.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
We're gonna hear more from behind Enemy Lines as we
go and talk to one of the Texans analysts to
learn about the far Brought to you by Field Auto Group,
Seafields first Jackson's premiere luxury auto group, but a Field
Auto dot Com. Welcome into Behind Enemy Lines this week
where we check in with the Jaguars opponent for this week.
(05:57):
So we're checking with John Harris from Texans Radio and
many other text and things. John, thanks for joining us.
We know it's a short week for you.
Speaker 9 (06:04):
Yeah, that is short you when that Monday night game hits,
and then all day yesterday I kept thinking it was Monday.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
I'm like, yeah, it's Monday. Like wait a second, No,
it's Tuesday.
Speaker 9 (06:11):
So yeah, the short week is never really fun. And
then we got to go on the road at the
end of it. That doesn't help either. So yeah, it's
it's gonna be a collective effort to kind of reset and
get ready for Sunday.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Tough start for you guys, obviously. Oh and two playing
well but just not quite getting to that. What are
the things that need to really be focused on in
week three from your perspective to get the win.
Speaker 9 (06:32):
Yeah, it's really a lot of simple fundamentals, you know.
On the final drive, Baker was able to take advantage
of us.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
The bucks were.
Speaker 9 (06:40):
Because we didn't tackle well. We missed a couple of
key tackles. We missed a tackle on fourth and tent
on Baker, and then a little while later Bucky Irving
picked up another ten twelve yards on a checkdown route
that if we make a tackle, Yeah, who knows whether
they can get in the end zone at that point,
but he gets another ten to fifteen yards another mistackle.
We're doing some of the fundamental things wrong defensively, even
(07:03):
though guys are playing hard.
Speaker 5 (07:06):
I think in a sense.
Speaker 9 (07:07):
If I were to put this kind of in a
music analogy, it's like we want to bang our head
like it's Metallica, and we need to chill out a
little bit more like it's shut a. So I think
that probably needs to happen a little bit and kind
of focus on the fundamentals.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
I think.
Speaker 9 (07:20):
Offensively, you know, there are some bright spots, but it's
just kind of hit or miss. You know, there's the
first drive, which was incredible against the Tampa Bay, but
then there are just periods of you know, starting stop
that we just can't really kind of get out of
our own way. So first year Ofvins coordinator, first year
play caller, a lot of new pieces offensively, and it
just hasn't clicked yet. So you know, it's gonna be
(07:42):
tough to do against the defense. Athletic, but that's really
what the charge is for us. Week three, taken out Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
When you look at the offense, obviously Nikailee and there
new kind of a new form for you guys. How
much of do you guys miss Joe mixing right now?
And then also do you how do you see this game?
Kind of not the scheme, but how do you see
the game plan changing a little bit? Taken on the
Jaguars this week.
Speaker 9 (08:05):
You know, Joe was really good because their offense live
was not great last year. Joe was really good at
creating his own yards.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
And I don't know that.
Speaker 5 (08:15):
We're missing a ton.
Speaker 9 (08:17):
I mean, it would be great to have Joe back,
because I think you could have a I mean, there's
a lot of focus that would go to Joe. But
I just think right now where we're missing is really
blitz pick up passing game. Guys can get open and
the protection's not great protections great guys can get open.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
It's more I think that.
Speaker 9 (08:35):
Yeah, it would be great to have Joe back, and
I think he would give you that. But Nick chev
has given us, you know, a little something. His pass
protection has been fantastic, you know what. He marks the
rookie from Mississippi State and USC has really done some
good things for us. So I don't know, it's funny
because as you know, you hear people talk about the
team locally, You're right about the team. You know, Joe
Mix's name has not been brought up a lot, And
(08:56):
I don't know if that's just being resolute to the
fact that he's not here or that we don't miss
him that much. But I think our offensive issues really
are not about missing Joe. I think it's more about
just fundamentals and learning the new scheme the way that
Nick Haley wants it to be.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
When you guys are game planning, I think Demika might
have mentioned this, but you know, taking on the Rams
in week one, in the Bucks in week two, Liam
Collen working in both those places very much catered to
the places that he's been before. Does that help kind
of game planning when you're going up against what looks
to be a similar scheme.
Speaker 5 (09:32):
Yes, and No.
Speaker 9 (09:33):
Monday Night we didn't stop that scheme at all. I mean,
they stuffed the ball right down our throats. They had
a lot of runs that we were unable to account for.
They ran, you know, different counters, different buck sweeps, different
things that I know that Liam is sitting there going, oh,
we can do this, and they've got the running backs
to do it. And I think they've got even better
(09:54):
running backs with Etn and Basehelle Touton, who I did
a lot of work on in the draft, hoping that
the Texans would take a lot look at him, and
then when I saw the Jaguars drafting, was very disappointed,
and I thought, man, that's that's gonna be trouble for
us if we're not on our fundamentals and we're not
tackling well, because those two guys are very difficult to
tackle as well.
Speaker 5 (10:12):
So it's it's great.
Speaker 9 (10:14):
You might know what's coming in a sense, you might
see some tendencies that are the same, but the way
that Tampa Bay was able to execute, if Jacksonville executes
in that way, it doesn't matter if we know what's coming,
because they're gonna stick it right down our throats the
same way with that running game. And I think Jacksonvill's
offensive line is gonna be better than maybe some fans
here want to expect. I think we're gonna see a
(10:36):
lot of the same thing that Josh Grizzard, the offense
coordinator for Tampa Bay ran, learning it from Liam. There
might be some twists on it that Liam's gonna put
on it based on what tournament. His you know, his
players and what he's got in his personnel groupings.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
But I think it's a.
Speaker 9 (10:52):
Double edged sword, like, yeah, it's great, we've been prepping
for it for three weeks. But the other night we
didn't stop it, so we got we got to stop
it and hope to have a chance to keep that fast.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
And that's the other things that stood out.
Speaker 9 (11:05):
It's how fast Jacksonville is, especially offensively, like, wow, man,
they got some guys that can really run, so our
guys are gonna have to be on it. Really really
minder P's and Q's the other night that you really
didn't do that.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
I think they were just so I use the word hyper.
Speaker 9 (11:18):
It sounds like a you know, a five year old
kid on pop rocks, But that kind of was the
way they were playing. They got to like settle into
a smooth groove and just go play. And I think
they'll do a better job because they have seen some
of this stuff. But if I'm Liam, I go right
back to what we struggled with, especially because that fits
with what I think Jacksonville does really really well with
ETN and tooting very good.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
It's our first divisional matchup. We're looking forward to it.
We'll see you John on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
Take care. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Thanks to John Harris for joining me earlier, and of
course say what's here on jag xam coming up will
tell you what we think the headlines.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Are going to be on Monday morning. Eg dam rop you.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
My stud is moving in storage for most trusted and
dependable moving company set it's proud to be the official

Speaker 4 (12:10):
I'm past that, way past that at this point in
my life, so it's not something I'm really I've thought
about since then. Everybody's different. You know, it's football. It's
a violent game, and obviously it's unfortunate when things like
that happen, and I don't want to get into all
that again, but you know, this is World War past that,
(12:31):
so I'm not going to look in the rear view mirror.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, reflecting on the hit he took the
last time the Texans and the Jaguars played, That hit
from Aziz al Shier gave him a concussion and he
missed the rest of the season, so Trevor Lawrence says
he's moved much far past that. I think, you know,
there's a lot of been a turnover, a lot of
changes here since that point, so I think be a
little bit different.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
But there's always a rivalry.
Speaker 6 (12:53):
Listen, there is the rivalry because if you go back
and look at the record from when the Texans came
into the league in two thousand and two until today,
they have owned the series. There have been little pockets
where the Jaguars have had success against the Texans, but
through the Eros, the Texans have owned the series.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
The only thing I'll say about that hit is that,
And I think Liam Goleen said at best, the best.
Speaker 6 (13:12):
Revenge, if that's the word that you want to use,
is for the Jaguars to go out and play well,
for the quarterback to go out and play well.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
Now I might find where zero is.
Speaker 6 (13:20):
I might run a little Breton Strange's directions right and
send the message you know you did that last year,
We're coming after you this year. We're going to be
the more physical team. But the best revengers just to
go out and beat the Texans.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
Well.
Speaker 7 (13:31):
The cliche is, look, look, there's too much going on
to prepare and if you're thinking about that, you're not
thinking about the game. And that cliche is very true.
But it's the incident will run through the water here
and there. I do believe there will be a feeling
(13:52):
of you know, I've said it all week, It's the
only I can thing to say it. If the Texans pushed,
the Jaguars.
Speaker 6 (13:57):
Are going to push back, and so I'm e sorded
about this becomes part of the rivalry. I mean, you
remember when Greg Lloyd took out Keenan McCardell in nineteen
ninety seven. Whenever we talk about the Steelers and that
rival we go back to that game because there was
some roster moves that angered the Steelers and Greg Lloyd,
the outside linebacker, just crushed Keenan right after the.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
Game and he said, well he said something about my wife. Well,
Keenan mccardnell never said anything about his wife. That was
just a message you signed one of our players the
week that we were playing.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
This is what we do, all right, Well, we're gonna
start looking forward now as we look as to what
the headlines will be on Monday morning, We're.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Gonna predict the feature do our best. What do you
think the headlines are gonna be on Monday.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
Then I'll go with turn them loose. And you can
look at this two different ways. The first is is
that the Houston Texans offensive line has had trouble protecting
the quarterback. Going back to last season, he was sacked
fifty six times. He was hit multiple times in the
fourth quarter of the other night. That really impacted that ballgame.
So I say, let him go right and we let
(15:02):
that defensive line chase and forty four was a wrecking
ball in Cincinnati. I mean, just go back and watch
the tape.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
So turn those guys loose. The other side of this
is and I know.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
We're talking about BTJ all week and that's the dominant
story because he's such a good player. But the running
game is averaging one hundred and sixty nine yards through
two weeks. Again two weeks, John, But the Jaguars have
shown the ability to run the ball, which they haven't
been very effective at the last two years. Go get
them run the football to set up the pass until
such point that you've got the passing game in sync.
Speaker 5 (15:35):
It might take a little while. Run the ball.
Speaker 7 (15:38):
Yeah, sort of the same theme. I think we'll all
have it mine was standing strong taking the hit last
year aside, This game to me is huge for the
Jaguars in the sense that they've shown the identity they
want to be this year the Texans think they're that team,
(15:59):
or actually the Texans have shown they're that kind of
a team.
Speaker 5 (16:02):
If the Jaguars are really a.
Speaker 7 (16:04):
Tough, physical team that doesn't back down to people, then
they'll play like that on Sunday. If they come out
of this game, think about us sitting here on Monday.
If they come out of this game running in the
way they did the first two weeks, creating turnovers and
playing physical and standing up, this game sets the tone.
Speaker 5 (16:27):
Do you think Dimiko is going anywhere?
Speaker 2 (16:29):
No?
Speaker 7 (16:30):
Do you think Liam Cohan's going anywhere?
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Have to say no.
Speaker 7 (16:32):
These guys are going to play a lot in the
next few years. This game is the first of a
lot of battles. I'm excited about this one and I'm
using that that jacked up on Thursday. This is gonna
be fun to watch for these gas is standing strong
as in the side. I talked to Duan Smoot in
the locker room.
Speaker 6 (16:49):
He was part of the last really physical, dominant Jaguars
defense in twenty seventeen. He was a rookie on that
squad and I asked him for any comparisons, and he said,
you know what, that team never backed down from anyone,
the audit, everyone, And of course that was Jalen Ramsey's personality.
But the reality of it is he goes, we're not
backing down from anyone. So I kind of got excited
about this game too. Even though Duwan wasn't here last year,
(17:10):
he was here long enough to understand the Texans Jaguars rivalry.
Speaker 7 (17:13):
Well, he knows all the guys. He you know, he's
tight with Josh eidens hinz Allen, He's he's one of
those guys as part of the culture even when he
wasn't and he'll be on the ozone podcast this I'll
drop that name right there quickly.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Mine's along the lines. Mine's seeing battle red.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Because hopefully we don't have to see the battle red uniforms.
But along with the defense. I talked to doorn Newis
yesterday and talked about trash talk. He got me hyped
up because he's one of those guys. As soon as
he puts on his football uniform, he's got the pads on.
He turns into somebody else. So I know the takeaways
probably aren't going to get three every game, like John mentioned,
but I hope it doesn't stop this week at least
because I think there's a great opportunity here. The offense
(17:51):
has had a hard time getting going for the Texans
so far. They got a new offensive coordinator that are
still trying to figure things out. Joe Mixon's not on
the field right now, so without the run, they're having
trouble connect seeing their wide receivers.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
I think this is a great opportunity.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
To get that interception and get some extra chances for
the offense, and hopefully that means a win for the
Jaguars this Sunday.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Stay with us.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
We'll come back after the break and tell you a
little bit of well, what's respectful for the game.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Jags fans do on customized Jaguars furniture for your home.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Check out vifchaer dot com to rouse all the customizable
options off Cherish furniture for fans and this game this
Sunday against the Texas, brought to you by UF Healthy,
official healthcare partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Speaker 3 (18:31):
I'm gonna want to come out and see this one.
I think it's gonna be good.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Obviously, reminders everyone to get to the stadium early because
of construction. You don't want to deal with any of
the delays, so'll come early. I think the Main Street
bridge is still close at this point too, so just
keep an eye on all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
And get here right in early. Tailgate early, get after it,
have some fun.
Speaker 7 (18:47):
Yeah, like if you like games with emotion, if there's.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
A big game, it's gonna be Sunday.
Speaker 7 (18:52):
This is again, this is big for a Week three game.
Speaker 5 (18:56):
You're the chance to play.
Speaker 7 (18:57):
I'm excited about it, and you guys don't see me
excited that much.
Speaker 6 (19:00):
So you have a chance to put the Texans in
an Owen three hole, right, I mean that is big
for them as the two time defending division champs to
put them down three early, and that's a great opportunity
for this football team.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
And selfishly, they're going to be wearing the Prowler's uniforms
and I'm excited about that as I'm sure many of
the fans are as well.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
So enjoy the game on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
We'll be back on JAGXAM on Monday to recap everything
for you.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
And hopefully a Jaguars win
