Speaker 1 (00:16):
Welcome to jags AM on Wednesday, October First, I'm kind
of Annie Stephens, fran Sexton, John Osier with me this morning.
We got a little bit of an extended week as
we get prepared for Monday Night football. The Chiefs are
coming to town. It is going to be one to remember.
Let's get into our big Things today, brought to you
by GEAJ Government Empoyees Health Association. Big Thing number one,
give and take. We've told you a ton about the

(00:37):
takeaways thirteen so far this season through four weeks. But
the Chiefs they don't give it away that often. Only
one interception for Patrick Mahomes so far. So Brian, something's
got to give on Monday Night football. Which one's it
going to be?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Well, hopefully you can force a couple of fumbles because
Patrick Mahomes is playing really sharp. If you saw any
of that Ravens game the other night, you realize even
without their all star cast, right, I mean, they are
he sing together an offensive lineup right now until some
of their guys get back, like Rashie Rice.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Who's on a six game suspension.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Mahomes is just magical with the ball in his hands
and he puts the ball in places where only his
guys get it. So you'd like to see Eric Arms dead,
Dennis guard Deck, who else, Foyer, Luakan punch the ball
out on Pacheco or some of these receivers when they
get the ball in their hands. Because Mahomes doesn't look
like he's interception prone at this point of the season.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
No, he's not prone, but you know, trends are made
to be broken. And also this Jaguars defense and the
team is eventually gonna have to win without getting three
or four takeaways. I think if you get one before
it's a fumble, and then you get him into a
situation late in the game where they're behind, then like
any quarterback, you start forcing throws. That could be the formula.
I think they need to get one off of him

(01:50):
and turn that into a field position, momentum type situation
and then just play the same kind of defense they've
been doing because they've been a good defense even without
the takeaways.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
It's got a big thing Number two, which is gonna
be feeling the pressure. Trayvon Walker had a risk injury
against the forty nine ers. We're still not certain on
his availability going forward, although I'm gonna assume if he
can play, he will play John. But if Trayvon's not
out there, what's this going to look like for the
pass rush?

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Well, it's the good news, is they still you know,
I love Trayvon Walker. Right now, Josh Heines Allen is
their best defensive player. He's been incredibly disruptive. His sack
number a half, but that doesn't reflect how disruptive he's been.

Speaker 5 (02:33):
They have to get impact from Eric Armstead if.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
Trayvon's not in the game, they have to get a
little bit from the other side. And then Josh Heines Allen.
You know, to me, this is his game defensively. And
now what I mean by this is he always talks
every off season he wants to be All Pro. He
wants to be defensive player of the Year. Monday Night
football against Kansas City D.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
Watch Spoot's gonna be important.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
You're gonna need that veteran presence to keep the edge
because if you're getting from Devon Hamilton and Eric Armstead
like you did last week, and Mason Smith like you've
seen in his limited time on the field, then Mahomes
is going to have to get outside the pocket. Now,
if you saw their game at all against the Ravens
or the Giants. He is so nimble, so able to
work the sideline to his advantage. So the advantage that

(03:17):
you need is a veteran guy, and some moodably become
very important towards trying to keep Mahomes in the pocket.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Sure, not necessarily interception prone, but you can get some
incompletions if you can force them out. So our final
big thing today is going to be primetime because it's
Monday night football coming to town, Bryan. It's their only
timetime matchup of the year. We're not counting on because
that's a little early, but to have a primetime matchup
against a team like the Chiefs is this huge opportunity.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
And it sounds like the place is going to be full.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
There were a lot of seats a few weeks ago
and there aren't.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Now.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
That's what three and one does, That's what a signature
victory over the San Francisco forty nine ers does, and
that's also what Patrick.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Mahomes and the Chiefs do.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
If you saw again their game against the Giants, they
put a lot of red in that giant stadium. So
it's going to be a raucous crowd They're used to it.
Kai they play six primetime games this year. They are
absolutely non plussed by the idea of having to play
at eight o'clock at night on a full stage, you know,
with a stadium that's rooting against them. So for the Jaguars,

(04:15):
they've got to harness that energy and use it to
their advantage to play really good, smart football. I don't
have any doubt, John, that they'll come out energized and
ready because as KAI metric, it's their only primetime opportunity.

Speaker 5 (04:26):
Yeah, they'll be plussed.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
I mean, if the Chiefs are non plussed, the Jags
will be plussed. Look, I don't know if the schedule
makers anticipated this, but you know, you put Kansas City
i'm a football against the Jags, I think probably in
March or May when they're making this. Oh, it's a
good chance to get Mahomes on. The Jags are a
big story and you know, and it's a big opportunity
for them nationally. I don't think many people thought that

(04:49):
the Jags would go into this game with the better record,
with a chance to put Kansas City, you know, in
the race for home field, a chance to put them
to you know, and I'm saying that sort of, you know, smiling.
The Jags are good and this is a chance to
make a statement and to start getting positioning on teams

(05:09):
because I think this team has a chance to get
into that deep conversation in December.

Speaker 5 (05:14):
So big game all around.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
That you're saying it at all is the story though, John,
I mean, we wouldn't have thought even tongue in cheek
mentioned that you'd be in the race for that first
year with Liam building this thing up. But this is
a golden opportunity for the Jaguars to get one of
those important games when it comes to tiebreakers and things
like that for a wild card.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Or even to win the division. So this is a
really important game in.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Week five playoff implications. Dare I say, am I thinking
too far ahead? Anyway?

Speaker 5 (05:41):
Hopefully?

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Anyway, we're gonna talk more about Monday Night football, what
we've got coming up the rest of the week here
on jackson Brought to you by Jet Holmelungs. Twelve years,
Dreamfindersmes have been proud to call themselves the official homebuilder
of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Visit dreamfindersomes dot com for all
of the available and go Jags. This oh, this, oh,

(06:09):
welcome back in your jag zam this morning brought to
you by Jet Home Loans. Here in the Hyundai studios,
we are getting ready for Monday night football, which always
feels a little bit different, and it's against a great
team in the Kansas City Chiefs. So when I was
looking at the schedule, I originally thought this first full
slate was probably the toughest section. But again, when you
start at the beginning of the season, you never know
what injuries are going to be like or what teams

(06:29):
are going to be like. Are we amidst the toughest
part of the schedule right now or is it maybe
a little bit later we got some of those far
away West Coast trips.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
I think it's right now.

Speaker 5 (06:40):
We're heading into it.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Yeah, I mean Kansas City with Mahomes, no matter what
the record is, it's a tough one. But then you've
got Seattle at three and one, who might be the
best team in the in the West, which is the
only division right now in the NFC that has all
every team at five hundred or better. And then you
get the Rams and we know what they are with
Stafford and what they're capable of doing.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
You're both three and one right now.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
So I mean these three games leading up to the
bye week, they don't make you or break you. They
could make you if you if you find a way
to navigate them successfully. But it's one of those situations
where tough, tough, tough.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
Yeah, and look, don't discount what they've just done, meaning
get through the Texans. I don't care if the Texans
are one and whatever. This was a team that you
needed to get through. And they beat an unbeaten forty
nine ers team. So sometimes there's a tendency once you
beat a team. Oh they beat that team. It wasn't
very hard. Going out to San Francisco was big. But

(07:33):
I agree with Brian. When the schedule came out, I
thought the overlooked part by some people was case and
then getting Seattle in the Rams. You know, nobody on
the East Coast thinks about Seattle, but they're always competitive,
they're always good. Most people couldn't name a player, but
they always start stacking them up and so they'll be tough.

(07:55):
And then the Rams. You know what a game in London.
But yes, I think the next three you're three one
now you get out of that, dude, dare I say,
you know, if you can navigate that, and then you
get to the buy after that, you do get a
part of the schedule where objectively you would look at
games and start saying, yeah, they should start taking those off.

(08:16):
That's not how they're thinking, but that's how the schedule
looks from an etective point.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Well, and they've defended the home turf already.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
They're two and zero, right, and they've got Kansas City
Seattle here in Jacksonville and then a game that they
feels like a home game at Wembley Stadium in London.
So tough part of the schedule plays to your advantage
because you're unfamiliar turf.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
You get two of the next three.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
Oh, you're feeling you're in the London and they're thinking
three and oh, and you know, I hope and all that.
But you get two of the next three and go
in five and two. Boy howdy, Yeah, that'll be fun.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Plus we should point out the end of the schedule
a lot of division games. It's back end of this
backload of this year. Titans, the Cults twice and the
Titans twice are all in.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
The last five or six.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah, so for the last six so a lot of
ground to be gained there as well later in the season.
So we talked a little bit yesterday about some defensive
players that were here last year, offensive players too that
maybe didn't have their best season, and now we're seeing
a bit of a resurgence. Devin Lloyd certainly one of those.
Eric Armstead as well. When you're looking at improvement compared
to what they were last year, who's most improved to

(09:16):
you is a Devin Lloyd, Armstead or somebody else?

Speaker 4 (09:18):
I'd say Devin Lloyd is not close. I mean it's
it's you know, it's not a knock on Armstead. I
I think he's playing well. Devin Lloyd is playing like uh,
the cliche and the storyline has been who can unlock
Devin Lloyd? And I think for most people, uh probably
myself included. Uh, after it didn't happen, I was still

(09:42):
saying if I didn't really believe it was gonna happen,
I don't think anybody did.

Speaker 5 (09:45):
Uh. But he's playing. It's not just the interceptions.

Speaker 6 (09:49):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (09:49):
And he's and he has three he's everywhere.

Speaker 4 (09:51):
He's playing at a high, high level. And uh, your
credit to him. I think, and everybody on this couch
has talked to Devin Lloyd. What a nice young man
who works at it, who wants to be good, and
it's fun to see him enjoying this On Sunday.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
He was the equal of Fred Warner, right, who many
people think is the best linebacker in the NFC, if
not the entire NFL. So it speaks volumes. Just for
sake of argument, I want to I want to give
you another name.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
How about do it?

Speaker 2 (10:20):
Who didn't He didn't play a whole lot last year
because of injury. He's playing at the highest level he's
ever played at interceptions, tackles. He's a guy who is
making plays. And I think all of us had some
confidence in him. But did you think he would play
at this level? The safeties were so bad last year
that the standards was low. I get it, But he

(10:41):
is really playing good football.

Speaker 5 (10:43):
Run Yeah. I think maybe I'm channeling my inner Dewey,
which we all should do of from time to time.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
I think he would tell you he's playing at his
level and he's getting the opportunity.

Speaker 5 (10:53):
To do it. But I agree with you. What a.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
Cool thing to see and uh and what a year
he's having. But if you walk back there, if you're
up back down there right now, and ask Andrew Andrew
Winger if he's that much better than he has been,
because they know I've been. I mean, it's all along.
I needed my shot and I kind of think maybe
he's right on that. But did you think let's channel
our But did you think it would be this good?
I think that's that he can think it right, he's

(11:19):
supposed to think it. I thought he'd be solid and
maybe he didn't think he'd be creating it. Yeah, this
may turnovers. I trusted and do it because I think
we all should trust in doing and.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Do we we trust? It's not the new saying should
we start a new one?

Speaker 5 (11:34):
Coming up?

Speaker 1 (11:34):
We're going to talk a little bit about what's going
on elsewhere in the AFC SOUSE. We keep you up
to date on the division. I've been brought to you
by Field Auto Group, Jacksonville's premiere luxury auto group. Go
to Fields Auto dot com and this Monday night football
matchup brought to you by EverBank Advantage. You make the

(11:54):
most of your money at EverBank dot com. Slash Jaguars.
You do not have your tickets for Monday Night Football.
Allow me to highly suggest because the music alone, why
wouldn't you want to be at Monday Night Football in October?
Beautiful weather and two great teams Jags three and one.
I mean, I don't I shouldn't even be pitching this.

(12:16):
You guys should just already know. And I think they're
still tickets available at this point. They imagine by the
weekend I'll be standing room only. So get in there. Call,
you gotta call, make it happen.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
That's per game.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Oh and it's a prowler game. Got the throwback Microsoft word? John,
Do you remember this? It's the Microsoft office?

Speaker 3 (12:32):
No, the OG.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Did you have a You must have been a dial
up guy, now that I'm thinking about this, well, when
the Internet and the interwebs came.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
Out, the InterWave came out, I I was. I was
an America Online dial up guy at compu Serve too.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
I had AOL though, yeah, didn't.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
We all let's talk a little bit AFC South because
we want to keep track on everybody in the division
and see what they're up to. The Texans got their
first win of the year. Titans fall two oh and
f war. That's a tough situation in Nashville right now.
Don't mean to laugh, but I think even cam Ward
said it out loud. I'm not gonna repeat him exactly,
but he said they're not good right now, and the

(13:10):
situation doesn't look like there's much upside.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
No a rookie quarterback, a coach who's under fire right now.
Things do not look good there. And I don't think
that they expected them to look great. They you know,
they're rebuilding. The Texans, however, needed to win je On
in the worst way. I think they've got a couple
of fundamental problems that they're gonna have a hard time,
you know, looking like they did last year. They don't
have the big running back, Joe Mixon, and that puts

(13:35):
a lot of pressure on the quarterback and that offensive
on you know, they traded Cam Robinson this week to
the Cleveland Brown, so they're going with that rookie who
Josh Heinz Allen turned inside out and upside down. It
looks like the Texans are going to struggle for most
of this season as well.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
Yeah, I'm not ready to think they're going to struggle
in terms of wins yet, because it does feel I mean,
and they're proud France. I expect them to get a
run and get back into it. I'm kind of with you, Brian.
I wonder if the way their offensive line, the offense
is playing, if they can turn that run. You know,
first they have to make a run to get back

(14:11):
into it, and then can you sustain that. I think
that will be difficult for them, but you know, don't
count them out until they're out. But they do seem
to have some structural issues they're gonna be hard to
fix in.

Speaker 5 (14:23):
The offensive line.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
And you know, they bring in Nick Chubb, but who again,
is a former AFC North running back who plays with power,
but he doesn't. Joe Mixon came in there and gave
that quarterback a big lift last year. And we don't
know anything about where Joe Mixon is in terms of
his rehab. So I think that's a big question mark
for them. Their defense is good enough. Yeah, if they
stay healthy on that side of the ball, they can

(14:45):
make some noise. But I do think that that lack
of running game and an offensive line that hasn't gotten
a whole lot better from where it was last year
is going to be a nagging problem for them.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
They feel like they're going to have to win all
games or most games the way the Jaguars have won
last two, meaning it's gonna be scratch. You're not gonna
play Tennessee every week at Tennessee struggling. So I think
that will be their storyline in Tennessee. Look, we've been
through it. Sometimes when you draft that rookie quarterback and
you play them immediately the early part of the season,

(15:18):
you get this sort of thing, and you know, I
don't you always say you wouldn't wish that in your
worst enemy.

Speaker 5 (15:25):
I think a lot of.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
Fans were probably not franchise.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
They don't feel so white as a bad Yeah, but
you know, again, that doesn't last forever.

Speaker 4 (15:31):
And usually teams that start off like this they do
hit a run second half of the season when the
Jaguars get them.

Speaker 5 (15:37):
So you know, they're.

Speaker 4 (15:39):
Probably gonna make the playoffs, but it'll be interesting to
see how they develop from here.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
Let's look to the Colts. They lost their first game,
so now the Colts, they're still first place in the division,
I think because of tiebreakers, but three and one, as
well as the Jaguars losing to the Rams, who is
another team we're gonna face off against. But coming back
down to earth a little bit for Daniel Jones, but
they're talented and I feel like what we've seen from
Daniel Jones, is it something that will progress throughout the

(16:04):
season or is it a little bit People haven't seen
him in a while and there's a lot of weapons
in Indianapolis. Like you know, when the film gets out,
is it gonna be a little bit different going forward?

Speaker 5 (16:12):
I think it'll be different.

Speaker 4 (16:15):
Anytime you have a quarterback with a hot start with
no film on him.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
It's like in baseball.

Speaker 4 (16:20):
Once you get through that, you know the first part
of the lineup, people learn how to pitch you. The
same thing with quarterbacks, so there's an element of that.
I think he's good enough and experienced enough to come
out of that.

Speaker 5 (16:32):
I don't expect him.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
To be elite, top four guy, but it does feel
they're three and one and he's playing solidly. If they
get solid quarterback play, I'd be surprised if the Jaguars
and Colts aren't playing meaningful games in December.

Speaker 5 (16:50):
Those two games could be fun.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
But yeah, without a doubt, as long as Jonathan Taylor
stays healthy, he has a chance to play consistent football,
and there are some weapons there. Now, give them credit.
They should have won this ball game. If Mitchell the
young receiver does it flocked the ball before he crosses
the goal line, maybe they win that game. In LA
And you're talking about a four and oh team that's

(17:11):
at you at the top of everyone's list as not
just a surprise, but a really good team. The Colts
have had some talent. The inability to have consistent quarterback
play has killed them. I think Jonathan Taylor's second best
running back in the league, maybe the third.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
He is really freaking good.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
And if he stays healthy and can avoid the ankle
foot injury, Daniel Jones is not going to have to
do everything. And I think if you talk to people
who know Daniel Jones, that's the key. If you need
him to do everything, you're you're gonna be disappointed.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
Yeah, attentioning both these teams, it could and probably should
be four and oh, four and oh on top of
the AFC South when everybody thought.

Speaker 5 (17:47):
It was a weak division. So beware of preseason story odds.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Nice place to be and definitely a team to keep
an eye on. In the Colts say, well, let's we'll
tell you what's coming up. The rest of the week

Speaker 6 (18:11):
Parker backs up, fields it at the fifteen yard line.
Made a man missed twenty five year thirty yard line,
that's good or turn of Parker water still at three
fifty forty thirty twenty fifteen to ten bute touchdown. Parker
Washington just brought it all the way back.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Washington miked up against the forty nine ers and he
got a kick return for a touchdown.

Speaker 2 (18:37):
A little celebration sounded like, you said, Sparker Washington, like
he's a spark.

Speaker 5 (18:40):
The spark plug he was on teaday. Well, credit to Parker,
but how well was that blocked? By? What I mean?

Speaker 4 (18:47):
I mean, you know, usually on punt returns this is
historically you know, uh, the parnetary gets a lot of credit.
But the really good special teams units are the ones
that can block on punt and has some four core
guys who can block.

Speaker 5 (19:04):
And it looked like they blocked that one great.

Speaker 3 (19:06):
And God give him credit.

Speaker 2 (19:07):
He had a tough day against the Texans with a
couple of drops and he was under scrutiny all week.
People were pointing that out and to rebound with a
play like that when the team needed it most.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
Congratulations to Parker.

Speaker 5 (19:16):
Came back big. We love it.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
A little bit of a different week. Players are off
today is Wednesday, so we're pushing things out a little bit.
And you anybody you guys are talking to this week,
you're looking forward to speaking with.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
I'm going to talk to the linebackers coach about Devin
Lloyd this week. Absolutely, I think he'll have a lot
of insight because when you see sounds of the game
and a lot of the behind the scenes stuff and
you see the interaction.

Speaker 3 (19:38):
Lloyd is a cerebral player.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
People didn't give him credit for that, but he is
always seeking what did I do right?

Speaker 3 (19:45):
What did I do wrong? I can't wait to talk
to the linebacker's coach.

Speaker 5 (19:49):
Yeah, I'm talking to Travis DTN and the ozone podcast.
I've talked to a new after.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
Practice and look, anybody in the community who's met Travis.

Speaker 5 (19:59):
You guys both know Travis.

Speaker 4 (20:02):
It has been fun to see him grow over three
or four years as a player. As a person, I've
always liked his perspective and his professionalism and something forward
to talking to him.

Speaker 3 (20:13):
He always has a smile on his face.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
Even if he really doesn't want to talk to you
in the locker room, he'll smile and stand there and
do it.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
He's a true pro, he's absolute pro.

Speaker 1 (20:21):
I am talking to John's favorite person, dewey or off
the field. So if any fans have questions, send in
my way. Let's do what's up because he's having a
great season so far. We will be back on Jags
Am on Thursday morning to preview that Monday night football
matchup with the Chiefs. We'll see them
