Speaker 1 (00:16):
Plug them in to jag Zam.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
I'm kind of honest Stephen's victory week. We're a little
belated on victory Monday here on jag Zam, but we
are ready to talk about a big win on the
road in San Francisco. Let's start out with our big Things,
brought to you by g e a J Government Employees
Health Association. And took the win because the takeaways continued
to roll in. They had four against the forty nine
ers on Sunday. Devin Lloyd there with two of them
(00:38):
and he had a huge day.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah, I'm playing good football, you know, I think as
a team, we're all playing good football. And ultimately, you know,
I'm just focused on playing my best for the team
so we can win. You know, it's a great team win.
This is It was complimentary ball and everybody was playing
together and believe throughout the whole court, throughout the whole game.
So just probably everybody and like I said, we're all
(01:01):
playing off each other.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Brian, I don't know how long the takeaway party is
going to last, but I'm really enjoying it right now
and just to see the change. I know we've talked
about this from last year to this year. The mentality
is completely different, and also to be able to rely
on the defense when being put in tough positions continually
by the offense later in that game.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
You know, offensive coaches like to talk about it, it's
all about the ball. Same thing on defense. They are
so aware of the football. You saw the slow mo
I'm sure looking back at the replay of the game
of the punch outs, that Foyer and Dennis Gardak had
the awareness of being able to clench that fist and
punch and get it out before the knees hit the ground.
(01:39):
You know, the ball that was there for Devin Lloyd
almost over his shoulder on the first interception on the
care him to grab it and turn up the field.
You're right, they come in bunches. Eventually the numbers are
going to start to dwindle, but I don't think they'll
ever go away, John, because this football team is so
aware of the football, such a concerted effort to get
(01:59):
that ball out.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
Just look at Tyson.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
Campbell and what do you thinkgainst the Texans, that's rare.
This team has got that football right on the top
of their mind.
Speaker 6 (02:06):
Yeah, and sometimes look, there is a little bit of
a fortune element anytime you have a lot of takeaways
because the ball sort of has to bounce your way
at times. But there's also playing the game in such
a way we perf in positions to get it. Yes,
being all about the ball. Also, remember this team has
led all but I think nine minutes of the season.
(02:28):
They're playing good run defense, which means they are often
in situations to rush the passer, which means getting breakups.
Speaker 7 (02:34):
Which means knowing the other team's gonna throw.
Speaker 6 (02:36):
So I'm with Brian, I don't it's not going to
continue at a pace of three a game and three
plus a game now, but it's going to continue as
long as they play good defense and as long as
they're a team that is staying ahead because the circumstances
dictate that you can get them.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
It's going to a second big thing, which is injury update.
We're gonna hopefully get one entreyvon Walker who had a
wrist injury a little bit later on in the week.
But also when we talk about this defense, offensive line
as well, in a bunch of injuries during the game,
but still able to kind of have that next man
out mentality. Liam Cohen talked about it and.
Speaker 8 (03:08):
We got down to Rayon lane in the secondary. He
did a great job of stepping up. Anthony Perkins and
Milo have done a nice job coaching those guys to
know what they're doing. It's hard when you get down
to that, you know, that number in the game in
terms of safety, Jack Kaiser playing, obviously, Monterre Brown, Jarion Jones,
everybody kind of had a hand in this.
Speaker 5 (03:27):
But yeah, it was hard.
Speaker 8 (03:28):
I mean, we played Sincy down to the wire, right
physical ball game. You play Houston down to the wire,
physical ball game today obviously another physical outing. We got
to look at our schedule, you know, as we go
this week to see how we can take care of
these guys.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
John Safety, Eric Murray and Treymon Walker injured on that
same play. Actually, is this kind of you know, the
injuries are stacking up a little bit. We don't know
the severity of all of them just yet, but this
is going to be a more physical football team. Is
this part of the deal somewhat?
Speaker 6 (03:54):
I mean, you know, right now, it's it feels like
they've got two guys that are concerned, Trayvon and Eric Murray.
Your four games into the season, that seems sort of
normal pace I don't think either of them are out
for the season at all, according to what I've heard.
But you are going to get more banged up, Brian,
(04:15):
the more physical you play.
Speaker 7 (04:17):
This is a physical team. I was really.
Speaker 6 (04:19):
Impressed with the way that, you know, good teams generally
you look at the injury report after the game and like, oh,
they got a couple guys hurt. Bad teams, you're writing
about it because that's the reason they lost.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
You know, good teams continue to win in situations where
they have to put guys like ryon Lane in. But
if you have to play a long period of time
without players the caliber of Eric Murray and Trayvon Walker,
in other words, difference makers, well then you kind of
become what we've seen in places like Cincinnati and San
Francisco last weekend. You've got to have your frontline players
(04:55):
out there. Kay and John, you and I have talked
about this. Trayvon Walker plays such a Phis style. He
always has, that's nothing new for him. The fact that
he's been so remarkably healthy. I think he had missed
one game in his career at this point, and he's
arguably the most physical player on your football team. To
not have him for an extended period of time is
(05:15):
going to be very difficult to replace because he's such
a game wrecker. And we've been talking about this now,
you know the comparisons between him and Aiden Hutchinson and
who's the better player. This guy is such a good player.
If he's gone for a couple of weeks, they're going.
Speaker 5 (05:27):
To feel it.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
I think it's at all possible for him to play,
though he will find a way. I know Treyvon will
be out there with a club if he can. So
we'll keep you updated throughout the week as we get
more information about Trayvon's injury. Our final thing today is
going to be talk that talk for big things because
a lot of talking during the week from coach, but
he didn't have a ton to say after the game
about on the field altercation.
Speaker 9 (05:49):
Oows, not a big deal, you know, and just keep
that between us.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Now.
Speaker 9 (05:54):
We're going to keep that between us. No, they're going
to keep that between us right now. That's it, Liam.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Cohen, Robert Sall going to keep that between them. Brian,
we can talk about it though not a true altercation,
but they were yapping at each other. We heard some
words from Sla earlier in the week saying that complimenting
that Liam Cohen's able to kind of see the signs
of the defense and then adjust at the line of scrimmage,
which I think a lot of teams do, but to
see that out of their coach, I think a lot
of players were excited to see Liam Cohen out there
(06:21):
fighting for his team. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
I read somewhere that Liam Cohen doesn't back down, and
neither will his team. And for a team that we've
talked about not being very resilient in recent years, Liam
Cohen's the perfect guy to lead them actions not words. Right,
they went out and won. They beat Liam Cohen's defense.
I think it should have been a bigger victory. If
the offense had converted more on third down, it probably
(06:44):
would have been. Liam even said that yesterday the Jaguars
had a commanding victory over the San Francisco forty nine ers,
and so Liam could afford a chirp a little bit
and let his feelings be known to saw. He wouldn't
do it with the media, and I appreciate that. There's
no reason to just keep the thing going. He made
his point to Sola and to the Niners and to
the rest of the league on the field.
Speaker 6 (07:05):
Yeah, and I thought he handled it the right way.
I mean, it's if you say something about it publicly.
Now those words sort of attached to it forever. People
go back and they use it. It was one of
the weirder compliments that was maybe a compliment, maybe not,
and maybe it was just really weird and the Jack Howards.
Speaker 7 (07:24):
We didn't do anything wrong in this.
Speaker 6 (07:26):
Uh, it was clear from listening to Robert Hainsey this
week and uh uh Dennis gardeck uh. The players liked it,
and uh, you know what, what's an NFL season without
some of the This was fun.
Speaker 7 (07:43):
The game's supposed to be fun.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Nice to have a little fire. Yeah, I mean John's
rased up.
Speaker 2 (07:49):

Speaker 10 (08:08):
Can't write a better script than that, to be honest,
just woke up today, you know, didn't want to make
it bigger than it was and just live in the
moment and you know see what today had to bring in.
It was a pretty special day, probably one I won't
forget that.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Smile from Eric Armstead says a lot. I don't think
he will forget that game. And getting to go back
to the team that he played for for quite a
long time and let him go.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
I think that's a pretty fitting ending.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
Do you remember a training camp when the story was
where's Eric Ormstead? Right? Is he going to play this year?
We need him this year?
Speaker 4 (08:40):
He went to such extraordinary links and people don't know
and I won't detail it, but he went to extraordinary
links to be able to get back on the field.
And here he is now making the biggest play of
the ball game, in the biggest ball game of the year.
John had a place where they hadn't won. I mean,
he's a good football player and he's playing well right now.
It's really important for the Jaguars that he can team
used to.
Speaker 6 (09:00):
Yeah, I smiled when you said that because preseason storylines.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Right sure seemed very important.
Speaker 6 (09:06):
Remember preceed and storyline when they couldn't get lined up
and it's gonna be an atrocious defense. Well, you know
in preseason, just relaxed. But yes, credit Derek Armstead made
a huge play. And I said before the game sometimes
pregame storylines about players going back places don't mean much.
But they let him go, and so good for him
(09:27):
that he had that moment. He's been a big reason
why they're a really good run defense this year and
why the defensive front's played so well.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
The change of position for him has been huge. It's
like completely different from what we've seen from him from
last season. All right, let's start out with the defense,
because why not. Dennis Gardak another free agent addition to
this team coming in, and we talked about the takeaway parade.
It continued into this game. I don't know how long
it's gonna last. I'm loving it while it is lasting.
Just the relentlessness. And I know we're gonna get to
(09:57):
Devin Lloyd a a little bit later on. But a
lot of the different players and defense talking about playing
free and they can just focus on where the football
is at all times, not getting bogged down too much
in the details.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
That seems to be really working for them right now.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
Listen, this is the perfect example of what I talked
about off the top of the show thinking and turning
and punching that ball out, not just getting the guy
on the ground. It is what they do, it is
who they are.
Speaker 6 (10:20):
And then there's awareness, you know, they make the play
after the balls on the ground. And again I'm not
trying to not get into the takeaway theme because you can't.
But what's gonna last and what's creating some of these
is Dennis Gardik mentioned it the other day, the physicality
with which they play. They're all about getting off blocks
(10:41):
and they're about hitting, and Gardik talked about it being
refreshing to play for a defense that plays the right way.
The hitting and the violence is not gonna go away
even the takeaways.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
Do Just look at the way that he turns away
from his guy and runs immediately to punch that out.
I've never seen that in Jacksonville before. It is sensation
to watch these guys go for the ball.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Oh, let's take a look at the offense now.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
Travis Etn's had a bit of a renaissance or resurgence
if you will, with the focus on the run that
Liam Cohen has been having. John I know we talked
about it in the press box. Collen can really coach
up the run, and Travis is fully taking advantage of
all the plays coming his way.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
This is a mature running back, still at the peak
of his physical powers, who, unlike when he was in
his second year, knows how to run and he's talked
about it a lot. When he first got into the NFL,
he was running like he did in college, which meant
he was better than everybody in college and run away
from people. This run here, if you notice, he got
an unbelievable blocking. But at the end when he makes
(11:41):
the cut in, I don't think he makes this play
as a rookie. I think he runs out of bounds
or gets run out of bounds. And I'm saying this
as a he has turned into a professional. His professionalism
and his work ethic made this touchdown.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
This wasn't even my favorite run of the game. I mean,
being slightly facetious. Who doesn't love a forty eight yard
touchdown run. But eleven yard run up the middle for
a first down. We didn't see that from him last
year when they handed him the ball between the tackles
most often he was stuck at the line of scrimmage
for a one yard gain or a one yard loss.
His confidence level is at an all time high. The
coach mentioned it in his press conference on Monday afternoon.
(12:17):
He's playing at a really, really high level, and it's
good for him because he's in the fifth year option,
he's looking for a contract next year. He's delivering. The
team is winning because of it. He's a great story.
Speaker 6 (12:28):
And I hope people remember this next off season or
early next season when there's talk of trading a good
player who's in his last year of his contract, everybody
alays wants to trade those guys. The current season counts
and Traves d Tan is exactly why you don't trade
good football.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Players, some of the most motivated people on your squad
as well. Let's look here the crazy catch by Pearsol,
because I just want to take another look at what
he was able to do in this game. That was
probably the only big target they had because of injury availability.
But Tyson ca on the coverage here, just crazy to
come down with this catch here. But then again, the defense,
when we're talking about resiliency, letting up a big play
(13:06):
like that, not letting that spiral on them, not letting
that turn into momentum, and then Devin Lloyd coming back
after that getting his first interception of the game because
he had two attacking It's just amazing. And that's you know,
and look at all the Teal jerseys around and the
coverage is great anyway, but just to come away with
the ball there.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
This defense, for lack of a better phrase, they're like
a wrench in a machine, you know. I mean, just
as soon as you think that you've got some sort
of rhythm going with a long past to pure soul, right,
they come back and take the ball away. They just
disrupt and keep you from feeling like you can get
anything going right now. I know the long drive against
(13:44):
the Bengals they didn't. But the rest of the time
this season they've been remarkable at just breaking a team's rhythm.
Speaker 7 (13:50):
But they did against the Bengals. They got them off
the field, and that's a bad call.
Speaker 6 (13:54):
It This is credit to approach these turnovers NFL these days,
it is designed that you're going to have Ricky Piersoll plays,
So Campanelli's approach and good defensive coordinators these days, look,
you're going to give up plays. The key is effort
(14:15):
in the moment and eventually if you give that effort.
Speaker 7 (14:19):
I think it was.
Speaker 6 (14:19):
Guardac said yesterday. God rewards those who hustle or who
r under the ball. That's what NFL defense is these days.
You're not going to hold teams to eighty yards. You
need to get turnovers. You can to make plays in
the big moments. And as far as Devin Lloyd look
for four years, getting around the ball at times has
been a problem.
Speaker 7 (14:38):
When he's around the ball, he makes plays.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
He makes interceptions as a rookie, so seeing him make
plays around the ball isn't surprising. About the only time
he didn't was the year he had a hand injury
and he had his hands on the ball four or
five times and dropped it because he only had one hand.
Speaker 7 (14:55):
This kid could make plays.
Speaker 6 (14:58):
For a man of his size, to be able to
have hands like this and make plays is really unusual
and good on him for right now in the.
Speaker 5 (15:05):
Size being the key issue.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
I mean, you see him standing there in front of
that podium, and how big, how long his arms are,
how broad his shoulders are. They just earned a lot
of linebackers. Most linebackers in this league are for a Lukon,
they're Ventrel Miller. They're around six foot one, maybe six
foot two two hundred and twenty five pounds. This guy
is a physical specimen from a throwback era. If you've
got him playing, well, man, do you have something on
(15:27):
this defense?
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Let's take a look at the first touchdown from the
play before. We got a big third down catch out
of Travis Hunter. And we know there's always at least
one play we see what he does on defense, but
on offense, there's always one play game where you're like, oh,
and like, that's I think what people want more out
of him. But just for him to go up and
grab that come down with it, I think they looked
(15:48):
at the play. I don't think there's anything to overturn
whether he caught it or not, But just in that moment,
that's what you need from him.
Speaker 6 (15:54):
Like I said before the season, I didn't know what
his stats were going to be. Offensively, you could tell,
and you still can tell he's a really good cornerback,
but I thought offensively there was going to be a
chance that people were going there's haters out there in
this world, right you know that haters. Well, that the
haters were not going to like his stats because they
(16:16):
were going to expect twelve hundred yards and twelve touchdowns,
I don't think he's that. But think about the last
two weeks against against Houston, he has the play where
he turns a short pass into a first down. It's
a field goal at the end of that drive, and
they wind up winning about seven points.
Speaker 7 (16:33):
I'm not sure they win this game without this play.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
No, I don't think they do.
Speaker 6 (16:36):
So those are two back to back weeks where if
you're trying to hate on Travis Hunter, okay, the stats,
if you're watching the impact he makes on this team,
big moment plays, which by the way, we didn't have
a lot of last year around here.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
He makes big moment plays. Well, you said it all
through the course of training camp. If you get two
or three plays like this from him a game and
they lead to a win, you're happy. The stats don't
matter at all. And the fact is is that they've
been able to deploy him john where they need him
on offense because you don't have Dianmi Brown a couple
of weeks ago. You need him in Cincinnati because they
play so well with those big receivers out there. He
(17:11):
is a very talented player. I think at some point
in his career we're going to see numbers from him
touchdowns and interceptions, but at this point in his career,
number two overall pick under scrutiny because the Jaguars traded
a lot to get him, He's delivered.
Speaker 6 (17:24):
It's three straight weeks with the impact play. Because if
you're judging this, he made an impact play against Cincinnati.
Speaker 7 (17:29):
Should have won the game, Yes he did.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
Let's take a look at the McCaffrey touchdown because obviously
we knew Christian McCaffrey is going to be a main
focus of their offense, and relatively for McCaffrey held in check,
I mean he was going to get his anyway. This
is where some of the injuries kind of come into play.
Don't see if Foyer looking in on this, Jack Heiser's
in I think at this point in the game, he's
dealing with another person dealing with some injuries. He did
finish the game, but it shows you the importance of
(17:52):
some of that linebacker play when they're not in there,
and Trayvon for that matter, when they're not in there well.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
And this shows you also that Kyle Shanahan with McCaffrey
uses a lot of trick plays. I don't know what
he called this a trick player, not it's a shovel pass,
but that in the hook and ladder were things that
created misdirection and took advantage of guys who were out
of the football game.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
And they found a way.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
The NFL is built for plays like this, for players
like this, and for the Jaguars to just kind of
hold their hand out and keep the Niners from coming
back is a testament to that defense and the guys
that were in there on that play.
Speaker 6 (18:24):
Yeah, I'm not sure that play happens if Trayvon's in
the game or Foyer, but when Christ McCaffrey's on the
other side of the ball, at some point, the other
team is going to score a couple of touchdowns because
he's elite. So this was a game that I thought
really showed NFL defense, Like we talked about before, you're
(18:44):
going to give up yours.
Speaker 7 (18:45):
I mean, you know you're going to give up theirs.
You got to get yours when you have a chance.
Speaker 5 (18:48):
That they did.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Let's take a little jump ahead and look at Parker's
kick return, because we know what he's capable of.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
We've seen him do this before. We didn't London last year.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
But I feel like at times at least from my perspective,
getting a little caught up in trying to jupe people
out in the beginning, sometimes not necessarily taking the lanes,
but he absolutely did it on this one and took
it to the house.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (19:08):
I don't know that he is necessarily going to ever
be the NFL's best punt returner for a season. But
here's what he does that's so good. He catches the
ball back there, he's reliable, and then when.
Speaker 7 (19:25):
It opens up like this, he takes it.
Speaker 6 (19:28):
He's done this twice so again, there are times that
it feels like he dances, but this time he made
a move and he went. So I think they like
the fact that they can rely on him and every
once in a while he's got a chance to go.
Speaker 11 (19:42):
You know.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
He reminds me of Maurice Jones, Drew and people who
were around when he was a young player. Remember, because
of Fred Taylor, the drag Wars could afford to put
him out there to return punts and kickoffs, and he
had a couple of touchdowns. Again, just because of his build,
he was never going to be that guy that just
got into a lane and outran people.
Speaker 5 (20:00):
But he joked a little bit and got.
Speaker 4 (20:01):
His hips moving in one direction and his shoulders in another,
and got to the outside and found ways to get
to the end zone. That's what I was thinking of
watching him return that. The other day, he had a
punt return and a kickoff return against the Colts in
his career, and in both of those he just made
guys miss I think this guy can do the same thing.
Speaker 7 (20:21):
And credit this kid.
Speaker 6 (20:22):
He came in and he really didn't have a standout
rookie season. It seems like he was trying to figure
things out late round pick. He could have easily disappeared
into the woodwork in the NFL and has is a
huge contributor for this team even this year.
Speaker 7 (20:42):
Three wide receivers, he was the fourth guy.
Speaker 6 (20:45):
He matters and it's hard from the position he was
in to work yourself into a position where you matter
in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (20:52):
Two players that we've talked about in this segment alone
who amplify what you were just talking about, Parker Washington
and Devin Lloyd. Two guys that took a little time
to get their feet underneath them and needed some coaching
and the right system to come along and put them
in a place where their talents could be featured, but
patience is sometimes a lost virtue in professional football.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
Young players need time.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Let's go to our final takeaway of the game, because
we had Eric Armstead talking about it off the top
and in a drive where you know, the Jaguars are
leading here, but forty nine ers have the ball. If
they go down to score touchdown, they're going to win
this game. Didn't even give them the chance to get
into it.
Speaker 6 (21:29):
Yeah, at this point you're sort of counting time, and
I think everybody was sort of saying, Okay, if they
score with you know, forty seconds left, can they go
down and get cam little. I mean, it's become such
a game of circumstance in the last three minutes like that,
and then all of a sudden you look up and
the balls on the ground and jars. So we've talked
(21:53):
about it the last couple of years. Year and a half,
they didn't make plays at the end of games like this,
and the difference and good teams. I mean, here about
an ugly win, Brian and oh had it. Good seasons
are built on victories like that.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
Where's the column for ugly wins as opposed to be
pretty wins? We haven't had enough of those around here
to discern either way. I'll just say this, the man
in the middle to have Eric Armstead there in the
middle being blocked with a long arms to reach out
and take the ball again awareness of the ball.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
Winning is winning, fellas, winning is winning. Jags are three
and one. Stay with us after the break. We're gonna
give you our hot takes coming up. Jagsam brought to
you today by Firehouse Subs. Will get your hot takes
as well.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
Yeah, I mean, we're it's a great start for us.
Speaker 11 (22:46):
Like I've said the last couple of weeks, I mean
it's early in the year still, but the way we've
won a couple of these games, and I think just
in any game, there's gonna be adversity and ups and downs,
and just the way we've handled them has been it's
been awesome. Teams really coming together, getting behind each other,
playing complimentary football. When something happens, we really take advantage
of the momentum swings. I think that was a big
(23:06):
thing to there, and we just play a full game.
You don't know what the next play is gonna hold.
Just even if something bad happened to play before, just
play the next play. Keep looking forward, and I think
this team's done a good job of that, but we
gotta keep keep doing it.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
I keep doing it, keep getting better week by week.
But the team's three and one, so I'm not going
to complain too much at this point. Brian. When you
look at the scene, what is your hot take for
us today?
Speaker 5 (23:30):
Enjoy them? Why you got it?
Speaker 4 (23:32):
The defensive coordinator and the job that he is doing
is catching people's attention around the league after just a month,
and again, thirteen takeaways is a striking number.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
But the Jaguars defense John was so awful last year.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
They couldn't stop anybody, and of course we all know
they only created eight of the team's nine takeaways last year.
Speaker 5 (23:53):
Keipan Eely is a guy.
Speaker 4 (23:54):
He was in Miami, he was in Green Bay, so
he's been exposed around the league as an up and comer.
But what he's able to do in the first month
has a lot of people saying who is this guy?
Speaker 5 (24:04):
How good is he?
Speaker 4 (24:06):
And we all know how personable he is, how his
players love playing for him. I'm not saying he's gone
after this year, that a job comes open and he
gets it, but his name is going to start making
shortlists of people because of the job that he has done.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
He is that good of a young coach.
Speaker 6 (24:20):
Yeah, I shook his hand in February, and ten minutes
after I shook his hands, say, this guy's gonna be
a head coach some.
Speaker 7 (24:26):
Day because he takes the right approach.
Speaker 6 (24:29):
Look, the defense is great, but he's going to be
an outstanding head coach when it comes to his opportunity because
he can connect with players. And again, what the league's
going to see when they look at this defense. The
takeaways are great. That can be short term. The way
they play and the way they hit, the way they come.
Speaker 7 (24:47):
Off blocks, that's what's sustainable.
Speaker 6 (24:50):
That's what he preaches and that's why he's that will
eventually be.
Speaker 7 (24:54):
The calling card.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
Well, and I got a call from a guy on
Sunday night that I've known for a long time in
respect and he goes, listen, You're number may never be
great because you kind of play that bend but don't break.
But he goes, look at the numbers against the run,
and the Jaguars are very highly rated against the run.
Look at the takeaways, and look at the points. If
you just look at those three categories and then compare
them to last year. That's why people are all of
a sudden tuning their attention to the Jaguars defense.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
They're very good in the most important categories.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
And when we talk about coach Campinelli, I think one
of the big things is he's very authentic and the
players love that. Why would they not, Because you can
come in with the bravado and a persona, but if
that's not genuinely who you are, the players can tell
that and you're not going to get the buy in.
Speaker 1 (25:31):
But he's genuinely who he is.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
And one more quick note, that's what Liam Cohen signed
up for. He knew that he was hiring a young
coach that was very highly regarded and very talented. When
you hire a staff, you want guys that draw the
attention of other people. You want to lose them that quickly,
but you understand they're doing such a good job that
their names are going to come up.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
If you have that, you're building.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
Something the right way and you're doing something right. John,
what's your hot take for us today?
Speaker 6 (25:55):
This is as real as it's been a long time
in a long long time around here. I'm talking about
that three and one start. I keep getting emails about
where they're winning ugly. They're not doing this. I thought
Liam Cohen explained this very well when he spoke to
me the Monday after the game. It really struck me.
The deal where they've only trailed for nine minutes is
(26:18):
a real thing, meaning they're in control of these games.
They're playing with the lead, they're getting up a break
to use a tennis term, and then they're holding it out.
That's hard to do in the NFL, even with some
of the flaws, even with not closing.
Speaker 7 (26:32):
Out or whatever. You're always playing with the edge so.
Speaker 6 (26:36):
You're in control of the game. They've done that four
weeks and they lost one they should have won. To
be in control of four straight games in the NFL,
no matter who the opponent, that's solid, and this foundation
that they're building, Brian feels very very solid moving forward
(26:58):
to me.
Speaker 4 (26:58):
I was just telling someone the other day, I don't
know what the end record will be. I mean, you
don't know how healthy you stay. And it's still a
young team in its first year with Liam Cohen, but
the fundamentals, they run the ball, they stop the run,
they take it away. Listen, Ky, they're three and one
and they've won two in a row, and in those
two wins, they've converted nine of twenty nine on third down.
That's an abysmal number. That's not a winning number. And
(27:21):
yet they're three and one because defense and special teams
have stepped up and the offense has made just enough plays.
Imagine when the Jaguars are converting. I always think of
Peyton Manning and those Colts teams because they were always
converting around fifty five percent on third down.
Speaker 7 (27:35):
John, you know you got a standard.
Speaker 4 (27:36):
Yeah, if you can get to forty seven percent, forty seven.
Speaker 5 (27:40):
They're like thirty three right now.
Speaker 4 (27:42):
But if you can just convert a couple more of those,
think about how you dominate time of possession, think about
how you score more points. I thought that the Jaguars
should have won that game by a much more impressive number,
and Liam even said it on Monday afternoon in a
Zoom press conference.
Speaker 5 (27:56):
It should have been a bigger win.
Speaker 4 (27:58):
Why wasn't it a more dominating when they couldn't stay
on the field offensively, When they are staying on the
field and that defense is getting more time to rest,
this thing can look a lot better than it does
right now. And three on one looks pretty good.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
It still does with room for improvement. I'm going to
give a little shout out to the coaching staff. My
hot take is players play, but Schemer's scheme. We talk
a lot about the players having to go out there
make the plays, so Jimmys and Joe's not Ex's and O's.
But I'm going to give some credit to the coaching
staff here because we are seeing play out of players
that were here last year and they are completely different levels.
Devin Lloyd, we're talking about Travis Dtn, Eric Arms said
(28:32):
back to his original position. Even Anton Harrison on the
offensive line, we've seen him look more like he did
his rookie season. And so for me, yes, coaches are
not out there on the field, but they can set
their players up for success. And what we've seen from
both Campanie and from coach Cohen is that he's putting
his players in a situation where they can go to
their best ability and play to their own strengths, not
(28:54):
getting bogged down with other things. Devin Lloyd, I know,
has talked about playing freer Travis Etn as well, having
the ability to kind of go out there and be
creative with what they're doing not freelancing, but being themselves again.
And to see the resurgent with players who last year
maybe were liabilities at times on the team.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
Now your best players.
Speaker 4 (29:12):
Since you mentioned Devin Lloyd, Mark Duffner, the longtime linebackers
coach who was a guest on this show, and I
were standing talking during training camp and I said, what's
it going to take for someone to unlock Devin Lloyd?
And he said, it's going to take a great coach
because the guys obviously got the skill set, the physical abilities,
and Devin is a bright guy. It's on the coaches
to get that guy in a spot, and clearly they've
(29:33):
done that.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
I love to see it. So I'm going to give
some shout outs to the coaches for that. Say well,
us will tell you what's coming up the rest of
the week.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
Karen Jacksonville jack XAM brought to you by Everbang Advantage.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
You make the most of your money at EverBank dot
com Slash Daguars Complimentary Football.
Speaker 8 (30:03):
All three phases talk about three takeaways, guys in four
says the first time.
Speaker 7 (30:11):
Ever fifty yards rushing.
Speaker 5 (30:19):
Those shocks allowed those.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
Harks.
Speaker 8 (30:32):
Hey game ball, let me give this game ball real quick,
Eric Armstein, where are you at?
Speaker 2 (30:43):
The ball is precious and they treat it that way
for sure. All those takeaways in that game. Do you
want to mention ever Bank sponsoring the matchup on Monday
Night football with the Chiefs, And now is the time, people.
There are three and one coming off that huge win.
Chiefs are back as well. They're looking good again on
Monday Night in October and Jacksonville go get your tickets
(31:04):
and throwbacks.
Speaker 5 (31:05):
What I mean, come on, it doesn't get much better
than that.
Speaker 4 (31:07):
People who were here at the end of the twenty
twenty two season when the Jaguars beat the Titans and
then the Chargers back to back Saturday night prime time,
it was epic. The league knows that this place can
be a fun place when they're winning, and they're glad
that they're almost to standing room only tickets because they
want to show what Jacksonville's capable of.
Speaker 6 (31:28):
It's been at times for the last since I've been back,
he guys an eleven and this is not taking away
from seventeen, twenty two, twenty three. It's been some times
where it's been rough. This feels like a kickstart game
in terms of people are going to come down and
remember what it can be.
Speaker 5 (31:47):
And I'm excited.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
If you listen, if you watch the video of them
in the locker room, that's a guy that those players
will run through.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
The wall for.
Speaker 4 (31:54):
It's tough to get these multi millionaire players fired up
like college.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
Kids, and yet he's got with an energy level. He's
really good.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
How about that? We love to see it.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
It's gonna be a little bit of a different week
because Monday Night football players are off Tuesday and Wednesday,
so we'll be back with you on Wednesday as we
start looking ahead a little bit to that Monday night
football matchup.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
Enjoy a week. We'll see you again soon.
