It is Thursday, May fifteenth. This is Jaguars Happy Hours.
Jaguars Happy Hour is brought to you by dream Finders

(00:23):
Frank Japha.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
And welcome in.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
It is Jaguars Happy Hour on this Thursday. Busy hour ahead,
busy week in the NFL. The schedule has been announced officially.
NFLVP of Scheduling Mike North we visited earlier today. We'll
have part of that conversation coming up shortly. They get
an idea of how the sausage is made in the
(00:49):
New York offices on Park Avenue. He'll break it all
down for us. We'll go ahead to OTA's next week
and yes, we'll go through the Jaguars schedule coming up.
Jaguars Happy Hour prison sented by dream Pinders Homes, official
homebuilder of the Jacksonville Jaguars ten ten XL Jaguars dot Com,
Jaguars YouTube each and every Thursday, JP Shadwick, Jeff Logoman.
(01:11):
Today we begin the show though with Kay Nannie Stevens
and studio with us.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Thank you, gentlemen, Hi Kai Hi, how are we?
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Oh we are, I'm well. Are you well? I'm great? Hi,
log great, great to have you.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
Oh, thank you. Thank We got Jeff off the canoe
off fishing in for the day.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
So that's all I do for a little bit, a
little bit. It's that Timm, you know I did. I
haven't fish yet this week, last week three days and
this week. Uh, a little tractor work this week. Gotta
take care of business. Gotta gotta do it.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Doesn't do itself, No, nope, I'll be great, JP.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
If you would learn how to drive a tractor, I
could use your help. I mean, I can be persuaded financially.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
You got the cowboy boots, you can do it.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah, I can be persuaded financial.
Speaker 5 (01:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
And a nice thing is that we would actually put
some scuffs on those boots. You know, they would be
so pretty. Oh man, yeah, get some dirtle. Yeah, that's
a song, well, dirt of my boots. That's a song
for a party. Right. If it's not, I think so,
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Hey, schedules out. We've got plenty to get to around that,
and we'll go through it. Let's go through it, Let's
go through it. Yeah, I'm ready we can pick wins
and losses right here. I know you love how to
do that. Oh, that's right up your alley.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Wins and losses. Are we going to start with the preseason? No? No,
not at all negative.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
A Week one Jaguars at home against Carolina, Week two
at the Bengals, Week three home against the Houston Texans,
Week four at San Francisco, and then week five Monday
night football at home against the Kansas City chief That
I like that.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
I like that schedule. It's not easy.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
It's right out of the gate challenging, so you better
be ready to rock and roll. And I think you
got to get that first game against a team that's
been struggling in the Carolina answers and they have a
lot of question marks still what quarterback?
Speaker 2 (03:03):
You know? And Dave Canallis is trying to work his
magic with a young man, but I don't know if
it's really kind of hitting home yet.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
There's a lot of missing parts, so I mean, there's
a lot going on in Carolina. So I think that
definitely didn't help him to come into that situation there.
So I think he stabilized the little Bryce Young stabilized
little bit the back end of last season, so I
don't exactly know what to expect, but in my mind,
that's a must win game. When you look at the
rest of those first five games. If you don't win that,
that's a big a problem to me because I would
(03:33):
like I looked at the schedule, I see this and
there's another section I don't know, second or third section
that are probably the most difficult. So to me, if
you can get out of that, even two and three
would be fine. Three and two would be ecstatic because
this is the toughest. To me, this was the most
difficult section. I feel like there's we'll get to the
(03:54):
end of the schedule, but I feel like with the
more division games at the end, that gives you an
opportunity if you can stay afloat to that point.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Questions questions around Bryce Young with the next four and
that I'll have quarterbacks in place, and certainly well high
end quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Well, I mean with Carolina, it all starts at the top.
I mean ownerships of mess I mean that's been an
issue ongoing in Carolina for a number of years now. Look,
everybody's kind of pumping up Houston. I don't get it.
They won the division. Yeah, no. I know they won
the division, and trust me, I'm a huge CJ. Stroud fan,
(04:31):
but their offensive line is still a huge question mark.
I mean a huge question mark. And it's not like
they finished out last year just rolling downhill through the division, right,
I mean, it was kind of like everybody else was
so bad.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
It wasn't any competition.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
They were the only team that was just halfway decent.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Sure, So I think that's a great opportunity. I think
to get a divisional win in Week three, if you
can beat the Panthers at two and one, and then
I feel like, like I said, two and three out
of five of the first five, I would be well.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
And Cincinnati doesn't start very well. I mean, when's the
last time Cincinnati started a season out fast? That's a
good question. They have not been out of the gate.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
And here's the other issue, and their defense is bad
and they got Trey Hendrickson holding out well.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
When you go from one organization that has issues at
the top with Carolina Panthers and temper and look Cincinnati's
you know, they open up the wall and a little bit,
but now they've tightened it back up again and now
they've got some issues going on. You know, I think
it's a great opportunity to get them.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Let's move along after that five game stretch to begin.
The Jaguars are at home against the Seattle Seahawks in
Week six. Then it's over to London under the Arch
at Wembley against the LA Rams. There'll be plenty of
storylines between the front offices there. Of course, bye week
is week eight, and then the cocktail party week is
Week nine Florida Georgia games, so the Jaguars are on
(05:59):
the road at the Vegas Raiders. Week ten, the Houston
Texans hosts the Jaguars down to NRG Stadium Kai And
you know, the one that sticks out here is London
and LA and Gladstone and Cohen revenge game and all
the storylines that'll come.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Around that one.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
Sure, I mean, that's self explanatory. Obviously they worked there before.
They're kind of trying to build their version of what
they've taken from the Rams organization here in Jacksonville. It's
also the first time we've seen the bye after the
London game because the previous coaching staff and administration didn't
like to use it. Then they like to push it
later in the season, so now we'll see the bye
week right after the London trip. It's only one game
(06:35):
in London this year instead of the two games we've
done the last couple of years, so that's a little
bit different as well. I mean you have to I
feel like just the consistency we've had in London recently,
so in terms of just being comfortable doing the trip,
that might play some advantage. Obviously, going from LA to London,
it's along a trip, so that could be helpful. But yeah,
and then a couple of those West Coast trips, they
(06:57):
spread them out pretty evenly throughout the season, which was
nice to see because they were going to make four
trips to the West Coast this year, so we spread out.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
The Rams game is going to have so many different storylines.
It's I think it's going to be fantastic, you know,
and uh, I think it will draw a lot of
attention from around the league. So that's good for this
football team.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Going back the week before that with the Seattle Seahawks,
I'm not scared of their quarterback. I mean, look, I
don't even know if they're that good of a football team.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Really, that's a.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Yeah, I think that's one of the ones where I'm
not really sure what you're gonna get when they get here,
so that in that way it makes it winnable because
you don't really know what it's going to be.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
So at Vegas fantastic. I'm kind of excited because we
found a really good steakhouse.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
They'll get an extra day, probably because it's Florida, George.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
That's that's what else a really good steakhouse. So we
have two different steaks. Yeah, so probably we'll have a
steak there. At Houston is always a good trip. And uh, look, CJ.
Strout again, the kind of weird thing is is that
you will have already have played Houston twice and you
have yet to face either of the division other of
(08:06):
the Division O ponents. Crazy, which is kind of wild, right,
I mean, you've played Houston twice, you haven't even played
Indy or Tennessee yet.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
I think this is a JP. We were talking about
this the other day. This is the latest in the
season it'll be until they've played at least one of
the divisional opponents at this point, because I don't think
we play Indianapolis until pretty late, so it'll take a
while to get to that point. But that very much
backloaded at the end with divisional games.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
I wish you could get Indianapolis early though, you know
what I mean? Yeah, who's going to play quarterbacks? Right?
You know you don't want to? And maybe it's not
such a bad thing. I mean maybe once you get
to the latter part of the season, they'll be going
back and forth from one quarterback to the other and
then it'll be a total show. See you know what
I mean. I like that, you know kind of show
(08:50):
I'm talking about it. Yeah, yes, I'm aware, okay, just
making sure most are Jaguars happy. How we're going through
the Jaguars schedule.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
Kay Stevens Jeff log, but I'm JP Shadrick on ten
Xljaguars dot Com and Jaguars YouTube. We move along now
as the schedule continues in November. Week eleven, November sixteenth,
home against the La Chargers, it's a one o'clock kickoff time,
that's ten am West Coast time. And then week twelve
at the Arizona Cardinals, Week thirteen at the Tennessee Titans,
(09:23):
Week fourteen back home against the Indianapolis Colts, and here
we go as we get into the holidays.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
So Nita Steakhouse recommendation for Arizona.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
Okay, I still have something.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Twenty in Glendale. Love going to Nashville at the end
of November. That's great.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Finally not January.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
The weather's fantastic. The leaves are in full change. That's
lovely and it feels like football. I'm excited for you.
It's you know, you got that crisp kind of cool
air at the latter part of November. That's a could
have couldn't have timed that trip up any better. That's
a Thanksgiving weekend by the way, Yes, Saturday, thanks.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
It'll post Turkey win in Nashville. Be nice. Beat the time.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
Oh yeah, beat it. I'll be I'll be like ten
pounds overweight and then looking for another steak.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
And then follow it up.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Let's go down the stretch now, the final few weeks
of the season. Week fifteen home against the New York Jets,
and then Week sixteen at the Denver Broncos Mountain time
Zone game four h five Eastern kickoff, and then at
week seventeen at the Colts, and then Week eighteen, final
week of the season. They always wait to schedule. All
these games will be two scheduled on Saturday, and then
(10:41):
the remaining games will be on Sunday and two different
two windows, and then a primetime ultimate game on Week eighteen,
no times or dates yet against the Titans here at
home to wrap it up.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Kai.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
Yeah, so weeks thirteen and fourteen, those are Colts and
Titans as well. So for the last six or AFC
South games, they're all AFC games, so they all will
impact if you're in the playoff positioning point if we're
thinking about that at that point in the season, that
will be affected by that. For me personally, in terms
of scheduled games, I think that that Broncos game is
really intriguing to me. I just think on the road,
(11:15):
that's a cool environment. Obviously they had a great and
ending into the playoffs for their last season. John Payton coach,
like I just think that's that'll be a cool matchup
to see. That's something I'm looking forward to a little
bit later four PM game two, So maybe get a
couple more eyes on it, depending who's on at that time.
But if you put yourself in a position where you
(11:36):
don't get out of it early, this is about as
good as you could ask for. On the back end
of this, you will have opportunities within the AFC South.
And I think I said on our schedule show, last
time we had a new coach and you played the
Titans in the last game of season in Jacksonville, went
pretty well. So here's hoping.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
First of all, I'm excited to have the road trip
to Denver. That's a great place.
Speaker 4 (11:59):
I've never been to my high I'm very exciting.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
And the weather could be an issue there in December as.
Speaker 4 (12:03):
Well, there will be snow weather exactly snowing, we'll see.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
But I love I mean, that's a great football place.
I mean, look, great memories. They are obviously going back
to the early days. But the fan base there is
really into it. It's a great environment. They've got a
good football team. They're excited about their team, they're excited
about their coach, and that's going to be a great environment.
And I think when you travel and you get on
(12:30):
the road, you know, from a lot of fans standpoint
and from my standpoint, first of all, you want to
you want to have a great environment to be able
to enjoy calling games or whatever. But the competition when
it's ratcheted up, and then the environment and then the
team's expectations are high. I mean, it just makes for
a lot of great things to happen on those certain
(12:50):
games like that and Denver I think is a great environment.
I think the Vegas Raiders is. I think the environment
there's going to be even better. I mean, you've got
a quarterback who's going to give them some capable play.
They got a new head coach, an excitement level that
hasn't been around that organization in a number of years
with Pete Carroll. So I like this schedule, and it's
(13:13):
I think it's that you don't have, like Ky you
were talking about, any long road trips to where you
got you know, one after another after another. They're all
kind of spread out. So yeah, I like this schedule.
I mean from a if you're looking at it from
a football standpoint, if you're coach Liam Cohene and you're
looking at the schedule, you're going, yeah, this this is good.
This is an okay schedule.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
There's nothing here that looks, you know where it's going
to be super challenging. I think it's a good schedule overall.
And you know, the flex game goes later in the year.
I mean, if you're playing better, if you're in the hunt.
There's always that possibility.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
As well in a night game. Yeah, yeah, it would
be good. You can play. You might get you might
get one. So what's the what's the record? Looks? Oh
want to pick them? Let's go. I mean, JP, we
don't even know what this defense and this offense is.
And you're asking me. I'm here every day, I'm asking
you the record. I don't know, I have no clue.
(14:09):
Let me let me look at.
Speaker 6 (14:14):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
I think. I mean with my till.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Colored glasses, I mean, ten to eleven wins, you're going
to win the division.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
I think should absolutely.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
I think that's all it would take to win the division.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Ten ten, ten probably will win it.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
Ten will win it, and a lot of it is.
I think if you go two and three, three and two,
I think you can do that.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
In the beginning, Yeah, you got to begin.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
The beginning.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Is the beginning is everything to me.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Yeah, before the buy you got to get out of
that with the chance, and then for the next five
after the buyer on the road, no matter the opponent,
they're away from here, then okay, you're coming back home.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
You got a lock in, and that needs to be
majority wins, and you get.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
A chance if you get to Thanksgiving with a chance.
Most every team thinks this way, right if you if
you're in the hunt and Thanksgiving, you got a real
chance to win the division.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Yeah, I mean, look, I think when you're your mindset,
when when you're a player and when you're a coach
is look, just take it one game at a time,
the old cliche, right, and nobody wants to hear that,
But just take it one game at a time. Win
your home games, which has been a problem here. It's
been in most places, you know, because you always have
(15:19):
goals on the board when your when your division games,
when your home games, those are always at the top
of the list. And those two categories have been an
issue with this football team the last couple of years.
What's this team's record been at home the last two years?
Been terrible bad, not good? Been terrible, not good. You
change You got to change that. They try to blow
(15:41):
that one too ot as Monday.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
Sure are I'm excited about We're gonna hear from a
head coach Trevor Lawrence will be speaking, I believe as well.
And you're a new offensive coordinator, Grant Edinski, cool offensive
side of football on Monday.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
Check that out on Monday, and then you got Jags
a m jagsam.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
Will recap all that on Tuesday, and then yeah, you're back.
You're back after that, the JP scheduled program Huddle.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Up on Wednesday and this show on Thursday. That's next.
I'm just glad they're finally hitting the field and doing
football stuff, you know. I mean, that's that's what kind
of gets you going for the whole the excitement level.
You know, the whole schedule release. They've kind of turned
that into a little bit of a circus show that
doesn't really exist, right.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
Because I mean, you knew all the opponents, you just
didn't know how they were gonna end up being laid out.
But boy, everybody's talking about it at a time where
there's nothing no I know, that's why NHL playoffs going on.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Everybody's talking about this. That's why the league does what
they've done with the schedule release, you know. But the
whole like.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Leaking out a little bit here and a little bit there,
just put it out. I mean, it's I get a
little bit that it's a little tiring with the little leaks.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
Then leading up to oh at eight o'clock. We're gonna
give it out.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Okay, Well, Jeffrey're trying to throw us off for you
the one leaking of information.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Yeah, you're the one. You're the leaker. No, I'm not
the leaker at all, trust me.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Kai, Thank you, thank you, thanks for hanging out with us.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
Kay Stevens joining us Taguars reporter and that we're back.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
In just a moment, we'll hear from Mike North, NFL
VP of Broadcast Planning and Scheduling. How is the sausage made?
We'll find out after this. It's Jaguars Happy Hour. Welcome back.
It's Jaguars Happy Hour and Jaguars Football is presented by
(17:38):
Fresh from Florida. It's always in season, JP Shadwick with
Jeff logman O. Thanks to Kai, Nannie Stevens joining us
in the Hyundai studios. We're inside the middle of Electric
Center to ten XL, Jaguars dot Com and Jaguars YouTube.
Jaguars Happy Hour continues. The NFL schedule fully announced last
night eight o'clock Eastern. There have been leaks all week long,
(18:00):
scheduled leaks in on unscheduled leaks, but throughout the week
and then finally the full announcement last night. Mike North
has been in the league office for nearly thirty years,
the NFL VP of Broadcast Planning and Scheduling, and most
of the time in the league in the broadcast department.
He gives us insight, as we caught up earlier today,
(18:21):
on how the schedule is created and some of the
musts that happened year to year when creating the NFL schedule.
Speaker 6 (18:29):
Yeah, honestly, those haven't really changed much. I mean, it's
a very different process obviously than when you know, I
first started thirty years ago, and we used to sit
in the scheduling room with the peg board and Vow
Pinchbeck would hang the tags up one at a time. Obviously,
the computers are doing a million times faster what we
were doing over the course of fourteen weeks back then.
But the goal hasn't changed, right, Each of these games
(18:53):
are assets that belong not to us, but to our fans,
and we want to make sure that the games that
warrant the most attention, the must see TV games, are
in windows where our fans can get to them. So
we're not doing our jobs if we're putting the very
best games on you know, a Sunday afternoon at one
o'clock where it's surrounded by eight or nine other games,
and it might only be available in fourteen percent of
(19:15):
the country. So maximum viewership, maximum opportunity for our fans
to see the games they want to see, and obviously
the flip side of that is going to be competitive's
fairness to our clubs. You know, you could make the
perfect television schedule, and maybe the teams are going to
have to take the short straw. You can make perfect
team schedules, and maybe the television isn't as good as
(19:35):
you want. So somewhere in here is the balance. And
the whole job is to push the engagement, to reach
the viewership, the fan value quotion or whatever it is,
as high as you can and then maybe for a
slightly better schedule you're willing to take on slightly more
team pain, but not too much. There's a line we
shouldn't cross on the team competitive inequities, and just want
(19:57):
to make sure that even if we walk right up
to that line, we don't us over. So find that
balance between you know, fan friendliness, viewership and also competitive fairness.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Mike, a lot of Jaguars fans immediately look for primetime games.
There was a drought around here for a long time,
no Sunday night or Monday night games for I mean
a decade or so, at least in the Monday night
since that's changed the last couple of years. And of
course this time in Week five, the Kansas City Chiefs
come to town on Monday Night football. We know about
the Chiefs, obviously, but what was it about the matchup
(20:30):
with the Jaguars that made that a primetime worthy football game?
Speaker 6 (20:35):
Yeah, like you said, the Jags have found themselves on
the national television schedule. Obviously didn't have the season they
hoped for last year. But you know, I think our
clubs get a mulligan. Right when the quarterback gets hurt
and the record isn't what you thought it was, It
doesn't necessarily mean you know the roster is falling apart.
You know, you have bad years. It happens. It happened
(20:55):
to San Francisco last year.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Right.
Speaker 6 (20:57):
That's a team coming off a Super Bowl appearance that
we were counting on and had all over the national
television schedule down the stretch, and you know, they didn't
have the season they want. They're still well represented on
the national television schedule this year. So as we look
at the Jaguars schedule, you know, you always get that
one national television game in London, maybe more as we
move forward. And then you look at the roster of
(21:19):
opponents and you see a game like Kansas City, and
you know, every Kansas City Chiefs game is an event.
They can't play all of their primetime games at home
as much as coach Red would probably like to. So
which of the Kansas City Chiefs road games are worthy,
if you will, of a national television window. And it's
interesting we actually had k C Jacksonville penciled in before
(21:43):
the draft. And then when you know the organization makes
the move that it does aggressively to go get the
Heisman Trophy winner, I think fans are gonna be really
intrigued to see is he gonna play both ways? Can
he do it at this level? Can Trevor come back
and be healthy? Know, an opportunity for the team. You know,
maybe you start a little quieter relative to the national
(22:06):
television but then by about week four or five, wherever
that game fell, I think we had you on a
Monday night game in week three last year, I think
it's week five this year, so a couple of games
under your belt, that long trip out to San Francisco,
an extra day coming back from that long trip, and
then ready to welcome in the perennial Super Bowl contender
(22:26):
Kansas City Chiefs to the building. I think it's going
to be a lot of energy, a lot of fun
in the building. And I think I might even come
down and see it for myself and see if Tony
BISSELLI will take me golfing on Tuesday. I got the
time when if you win, But that was a game
we had earmark for Monday Night Football even before the draft,
and felt even better about it after the moves that
the team made on draft night.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
We know quarterbacks moved the needle, but how rare is
it that Travis Hunter a wide receiver defensive back. It
doesn't come around too often like that, right.
Speaker 6 (22:55):
It really doesn't. Right, we're talking generational. I know Dion
did it a little bit. I remember Troy Brown did
it a bit up in New England. But I mean
people still talk about, you know, Chuck bed and Erik
playing both ways, like what is that in nineteen sixty
I mean, this is a once in a generation. And
you know, he was not just doing it as a
(23:16):
stunt in college. He was spectacular and for him to
be able to, you know, curious to see if he
can do it at this level. It's obviously a different
game up here with grown men, but I think we're
all gonna be intrigued. It's curious to see how coach
is going to use him, and I think it's gonna
be one of the early season storylines, quite honestly.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
Mike North was from the National Football League talking scheduling.
Speaker 2 (23:38):
Of course, you mentioned the London game.
Speaker 3 (23:39):
Every year last couple of years has been two games,
one away, one home. This year the home game at
Wembley only for the Jaguars. But now seven international games
for you to deal with, six of those in Europe,
three of those in London. You know, are those done earlier?
Do you know those ahead of time? Are those kind
of in place before you work the rest of the ski?
(24:00):
How do you mix that in.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
The home team's in place, the designated team, I should
say the designated team is in place. So we knew
by I would say Super Bowl that we were playing
the Chargers in Brazil, we were playing the Jets, the Jags,
the Browns in London. We were playing in Madrid and Berlin.
We knew the home teams, we didn't know the visiting teams.
So interesting story is you talked about the Jags have
(24:23):
gone over and stayed for a couple of weeks each
of the last two years because it happened to match
up that they played one of the other teams, whether
by standings or by rotation. Didn't work out this year
for them. They don't play the Jets as a road
team or Cleveland as a road team, excuse me, So
it didn't work out for them to be able to
do it. We had an opportunity to do it with
the Vikings, so we had reached out to them originally
(24:47):
and said, look, you can see the schedule. You know
you're a possible opponent for the Steelers and you know
they're going to Dublin. You know you're a possible opponent
for the Browns, you know they're going to London. And
they asked us, quite frankly, what did the Jags think
about it when they done it the last couple of years.
And I wouldn't be shocked at all if somebody from
the Vikings reached out to at least the operations guys
at the Jags and talk about, you know, what do
you do. Do you stay in one place and then
(25:08):
move just for game day or do you move and
practice in the place where you're gonna play the following week.
I don't remember exactly how the Jags played it if
they stayed in the same place the whole time, But
obviously Minnesota's gonna learn a little something from Jacksonville having
done it the last couple of years. So they're gonna
be this year's Guinea Pig as a team, first time
ever playing two road international games in two different countries,
and it may lead to us thinking about things like
(25:30):
that as we expand the international footprint. Like you said,
Commissioner Goodell has been very public about this. He wants ten, twelve,
maybe sixteen international games.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Someday.
Speaker 6 (25:39):
We might have to find teams willing to play a
couple of them, and maybe you do go to Europe
on your way to the Middle East or something like that.
So this will be yet another test run for us,
and we'll see what the Jags do moving forward in
terms of maybe playing multiple games in there when the
stadium's getting renovated. So This is all learning experiences for
all of us, and I'm sure the Vikings are gonna
(26:00):
rely heavily on the Jaguars experience over there the last
couple of years.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
That's Mike North, NFL VP of Broadcast Planning and Scheduling.
The full conversation coming soon on Jaguars dot Com and
Jaguars YouTube, but JP Shadwick, Jeff Flagman Jaguars Happy Hour.
Some interesting thoughts there about what moves the needle for
a schedule maker in the NFL is usually the quarterback
and you have a two way player that's a Heisman
(26:25):
Trophy winner.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
That doesn't happen often. He didn't make any bones about
it that that was a factor in the Jaguars getting
a Monday night game was because of the move that
they did on Draft Day. They had it penciled in
before they used the pen after. Yeah, I think that's
pretty cool. And look, I think great interview, by the way,
and I thought a ton of information in there, and
(26:48):
what I really liked and enjoyed was him talking about okay,
schedule competitive balance, and then also the fan engagement, you know,
factor to make sure that the fans are getting the
eyeballs or the most opportunity to get their eyeballs on
what they want to see, you know, and being fair
to the teams and how he you know, trying to
(27:10):
strike a balance there. And so I thought that that
was really interesting and I would have loved to have
been kind of in that room when they made some
of those decisions to see how some of that conversation
would have went. But then also the little kind of
nugget that he gave there about, hey, look, you know
the football team two road games. You know, we're maybe
having them be the guinea pig because you know, at
(27:31):
some point maybe a team goes to the Middle East.
WHOA wait a minute, Well, I think there's been some
talk of Dubai as a possible destination for an NFL game.
Could that be what he's referring to?
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Well, next year there's one in Australia, for goodness. So
I thought that was very interesting. And then also right
there at the very end, he talked about the Jaguars future.
When the stadium reconstruction closes it down for the year,
what's going to happen with the Jaguars and the number
of games that they play over there. So all interesting
stuff to me. And and obviously the heavily reliance on
(28:06):
computers to generate a lot of that stuff for them.
Can you imagine trying to do that like he was
talking about on the old peg board nowadays with because
you know, the one thing that they have to factor
in too, is that, you know, stadium availability other events
that might be concert tours and football games here, and
I mean everything.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
And they've got to take that into consideration across the
board with all all teams. I mean, that's a huge undertaking.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
And I remember back when teams actually shared stadiums with
baseball teams too, they would have to work out the
league baseball schedule. Yeah, which that's no more, that's crazy,
it's kind of it was the last one. Well and
then you've got, you know, two teams sharing the stadium, right, No,
you can't have a double header that day, no, No,
So it's it's it's definitely very interesting to me.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
And uh, I mean, the league's popularity is just floating.
And I love I love the whole the early part
of the schedule where you've got so many games opening
week and the opportunity to watch so many different games
throughout the season because I mean, JP, I mean, I'm
a football NFL junkie, and the more games that are
(29:17):
available to me at odd times, because you know, typically
the regular times were busy, so I like those odd times.
Speaker 3 (29:24):
Which is where when you hear the full conversation on
Jaguars dot com and Jaguars YouTube. I asked him, Hey,
what's the next step? What are some time and windows
that you haven't been able to touch yet? He'say, well,
it could be one of those. We have a nine
to thirty AM London, then the you know, one o'clock,
four o'clock primetime. Is there a market for We're going
(29:45):
to have a ten pm Eastern Monday night football game
this year at one point, because there's a double header
one of the weeks early in the season, could there
be a window where it's nine to thirty all the
way until if you're playing like a far East game?
Speaker 2 (29:57):
Cool?
Speaker 3 (29:58):
Right, And that's a possibility. So we'll see what happens
in the future. Moving ahead, our thanks to Mike North
from the National Football League. We'll come back in a moment.
Travis Hunter is in the building. Lugs two way player
might have heard of him.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
Uh yeah, just a little bit.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
It was on the field last week Rookie Mini camp
and he's been on the field this week in Phase
two and we'll hear from the Jags head coach of
what impressed him at least the first couple of days
on the field in rookie Mini camp. When we come back,
it is Jaguars Happy Hour.
Speaker 7 (30:39):
Now.
Speaker 5 (30:40):
You know when he got here after the draft, you know,
we got to hang out with him for a little
bit there and you felt it right away, right you did.
You felt that infectious smile that he has that he
provides and brings into the building. Very serious about football,
very serious about his process in order to put himself
(31:01):
in a position to ultimately just be in a physical
shake to be able to do this and to run
forever and to have the stamina and strength to be
able to do this at a high level. But you
see him out there dancing and having fun and that's
really cool to see. You know, we want to see
some more of that. And when he goes out there
and he's doing his thing, he is serious about this process.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
That is Liam Cohen, Jaguars head coach. This is Jaguars
Happy Hour. JP Shatterck with Jeff Logoman there. Thanks to
Kay Stevens winning US earlier Mike North from the NFL
and we're at the Hounday Studios inside of the middle
of Electric Center and ten tonight Excel, Jaguars dot Com,
Jaguars YouTube. All the places after Rookie Millicamp this past
(31:41):
weekend logs are out there.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
I was. I was in a good showing out there
by the fans, people up in the in the bleachers,
and boy, how about the weather window that we got.
Speaker 3 (31:54):
It was nasty on Saturday morning and then the.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Sky opened up, son came out and it was a
little partly cloudy. I mean, it was perfect because.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
That's for a better Not thought the weather would have
scared some people off, but no, it was packed up.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
The people were waiting in line when I pulled in
at like ten thirty.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
And of course, Coach Cohen, they are talking about Travis Hunter,
wide receiver, defensive pack, Colorado Heisman Trophy winner and pretty
much anytime he did anything on the field on Saturday,
there were big tears from that grand Stone.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Oh man, yeah he was and that one moment he
kind of made some gestures to the fans and appreciation
and they just erupted, and you know, and you can
tell I mean, there's a lot of eyeballs on Travis Hunter.
I mean, people are very curious about what he's doing,
how he's doing it. For me, I just wanted to
(32:47):
watch him to see how he moved and watching him
on the practice field, Remember I said that he was
the most effortless athlete that I ever watched film on.
When you watched him on the field, that was the
total case. And to use James Gladstone, he said he
had grace. He moves so fluid. He's such a great athlete.
(33:09):
It's it's impressive to watch and in person it's it's
even more impressive.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
And the difference is noticeable when he's lining up against
other rookies. They may not be as drafted as high
as him. Right, I'll give you give you a different
just a different movement.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
Give you a perfect example of how Travis Hunter is different. Okay,
So that day he was playing wide receiver exclusively for
the whole practice. So there was a drill that they
were throwing the ball on like an out route to
the wide receivers, and the receivers had to catch the
ball get their feet down before going out of bounds.
(33:45):
Travis does it and tap tap and the ball is
you know, he's got a good outstretched arms to make
the catch and adjust without even any kind of labor
movement whatsoever, gets his feet down and then stops his
momentum within about three and a half four yards of
the sideline. Well, the next guy that is up and
(34:08):
I don't remember who it was, Okay, it doesn't matter,
runs the exact same route, The ball is thrown in
the exact same location, and this guy literally taps his feet.
But because he's not the athlete the Travis is, he
literally almost runs into the side of the mech the
Miller Electric Center's wall because he can't stop himself, whereas
(34:30):
Travis stopped within like three and a half four yards.
It's just, I mean, he's just different. There was one
on Friday which was closed to the public.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
That were a few select kind of fan things out here,
but I was out there to see it, and I
think we had video of it on shows earlier this week.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
He was running the same kind.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Of route, kinding out and then gets to the top
of the route, breaks it to the sideline, loses a shoe,
still doesn't fall, doesn't slip on one foot, basically still
makes the cats gets both feed in and toe taps
the sideline, one sock, one shoe.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
He's yeah, no big deal. He is just different the
way he moves, how athletic he is, how he doesn't strain,
it's just smooth and the stamina doesn't breathe hard. You know,
a lot of guys you see him, they're working on.
He's just so effortless and smooth. It's just so interesting
(35:29):
to watch. And he's having a good time, you know,
he's it's and you can tell that that energy kind
of rubs off on some of the other guys. And
the interesting thing too, is that you know there's not
just the sideline eyes on him. There's players on the
field that are watching him because they're just amazed at
(35:52):
some of the things that he can do. And I
think the first impression that most people have when they
see him as they're like, well he's not very big.
Well he's not. He's not very big, but he's a
heck of an athlete. He's got great hands. The way
he moves is just different. I can't wait to see
what this young man's going to be able to do.
Speaker 3 (36:10):
Liam Cohen after that Saturday practice, also said that this
would be the week right now that he would start
getting some defensive work. It's the end of phase two
of the offseason program. No helmets allowed in phase two.
That begins next week in phase three with OTA's getting started.
But I mean, what do you need on the defensive side.
(36:33):
Offense is where you got to learn all these routes
and offense and you know, verbage and all these things
to go in a new offense and everything. Is it
much less on defense? Is it a different approach, more
read and react? I mean, how are we seeing this
on the defensive side for Hunter?
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Well, I think on the offensive side of the ball,
there's a lot of subtleties. I mean, first of all,
you've got to learn the playbook and then there's a
lot of adjustments that can happen during the course of
a play, and then the finer detail of running routes,
which Edgar Bennett, by the way, former NFL running back,
is the wide receivers coach who's doing a work in
his rear end off to coach those guys up. And
(37:11):
on defense, it's a little bit more of just being
an athlete. There's a lot of technique and everything, but
the precision of the route running is not like you know,
it's you can't compare that to the defensive techniques. It's
a little different. The playbook is not as thick. There's
still adjustments that got to be made, you know. But
(37:31):
I would assume that on defense they'll probably start with
like a package and allow him to kind of focus
in on that one positional package so that he can
kind of get his feet wet and then expand the
more that he understands. And you know, the great thing
is is that, by the way, kudos to Travis Hunter
for graduating and what did he have like a four
(37:52):
point zero or pretty close to it, I plogy, which
is tremendous. So, I mean he's got he's got the
brains upstairs, he's got the work ethic, and obviously he
has the athleticism. So I mean literally, I think everyone
in the league and that has been around the league
for a number of years can't wait to see what
he's going to be able to do because he's about
(38:14):
to embark on something that just has never been done
in the modern era. We'll come back in a moment.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
He's already creating connections with fans too that don't even know. Yeah,
my wife a couple of mornings ago showed me a
Facebook post and she said, check this out.
Speaker 2 (38:31):
Well, we'll hear from about this when we come back. Cool.
Yes it is.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
We're on ten TOEXXL Jaguars dot Com, Jaguars YouTube. Fifteen
minutes left in Jaguars Happy Hour, Welcome back. It is
Jaguars Happy Hour. JP Shadick, Jeff Flaghman.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
Busy, busy, busy time at Daily's place. Log's coming up.
What do you got?
Speaker 3 (38:59):
We got Kodak Black replacing t Pain on the May
thirty first show, and then we've got sticks with Kevin
Cronin and Don Felder. June second, Old Dominion June sixth,
Vampire Weekend, Vampire Weekend, Yeah, June twelfth, Class Animals, April
Levine Avril Levine Avril.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
Slightly stupid. That's me.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
That's June twenty sixth and plenty more. Had two nights
of Shania Twain in July. Man, how old is she now?
Just out of curiosity? That's a rude question. No, I
mean has probably taken offense to that.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
Well, I mean she's been around for a while, I
mean super highly successful. Yeah, I mean she had some
monster concerts back in the du she was the top
of everything. She was selling out stadiums, I think, yeah,
I mean she was a stadium time with the Super
Bowl one time. Remember that. God, I'm just curious how
old she is off looking up whatever? More than sixty five?
(40:01):
Is fifty nine? Yeah, pushing sixty she's look, she's uh,
she's still top of her game. Good for her tickets.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
Dailyesplace dot com for tickets and show information.
Speaker 2 (40:14):
I go check her out. I see that show. I
would like to see that. Yeah, you think we can
get Biselli's couch? I think we need to ask for that.
We got to ask. I think we should. Does he
have a bigger couch now? Since he's he has whatever
the hell he wants, you know, because he had the
couch before.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
Well yeah, well I don't think it was his technically, Okay,
I think he had sources to get him the couch
at Daily's place, by the soundboard and all that.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
So we gotta we gotta ask, We gotta grease got Yeah,
we gotta we gotta see if we can get that.
We gotta that'd be nice. That would be a pretty
good night. Yeah, I think so. Jaguar's happy. Our final moments,
j P. Shadwick, Jeff Logoman and uh.
Speaker 3 (40:57):
Coming up next week, it's Organized Team Activity's Phase three
ran actually do some stuff. You know before rookie Minnie Campdome,
we mentioned Travis Hunter walked in the commencement ceremony at
the University of Colorado got his degree, but then.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
He had to fly back.
Speaker 3 (41:15):
Well, he had a chance encounter with this lady on
the airplane who posted on her Facebook page and put
a photo of her and Travis Hunter up and said,
you know he had She had the most wonderful flight
home from Denver. Met the nicest young man who said
next to me off and to moved my bag in
the overhead compartment, helped me with the tray, always polite.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
All these things had this.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
And she had had no idea who he was, no idea,
And then people were walking by saying congratulations in great
job or taking pictures with him. She's like, who am
I sitting next to And then saw the Jaguar pants
that he had on, and he said, yeah, I'm Travis
and I was drafted by the jag So she already
wants this jersey and had nothing but glowing things to say.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
The next day, After this post.
Speaker 3 (42:00):
The folks at the NFL network Good Morning Football, found
Sandy Combs who made the post, interviewed her on the show.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
Here's what she had to say.
Speaker 7 (42:08):
By the time I sat down, everybody else started boarding,
and people would stop buying, say congratulations man, congratulations, a
good job, man, good job. And once everybody went burt,
I turned to him and I looked at him and
I said, ma'am, I ask you a question. He said yes, ma'am.
I said, am I sitting next to you? He smiled
(42:35):
and I said, really, what am I sitting next to
and he just kept smiling. I said, are you a
professional athlete or something? And he just kept smiling. And
I looked at the pants and they were Jaguar pants.
I said, are you a professional athlete? A professional football player?
(42:58):
And he looked at me and smile. I said, did
you just get drafted?
Speaker 6 (43:03):
He said yes, ma'am.
Speaker 7 (43:04):
I said, he said yes, ma'am, and my name is
Travis and it's still didn't register who he was. I'm like, okay, congratulation.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
That's awesome stuff.
Speaker 3 (43:18):
A full interview and Jaguars social I think they pulled
it from the Good Morning Football Show.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
The other day.
Speaker 3 (43:23):
But that just shows you the type of character and
class that Travis has and the interaction the fans have
with him too, the excitement they have they're bored in
the plane ticket photos with the guy.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
That tells you what kind of star power he can have. Yeah,
and he's he's very gracious from everything that I've read
and heard and had the chance to meet him. On
Monday night, the organization had a little rookie dinner and
brought in some of the former players cool who always
have myself, Kevin Hardy, Fred Taylor Bisselli of course was there, Yeah,
(44:01):
and a few other guys, and it was great and
it was a lot of fun to meet the different
rookies and we sat with different guys, you know, in
the position groups just kind of, you know, to pass
on a little bit of knowledge and share our experiences
to maybe help one of these younger players at some
point in their young careers. So was it like, hey,
each guy gets up at the podium and talks or
(44:23):
is it just kind of one person at each table
or how'd you guys work it out? If you don't
mind me asking, Well, and I'm sure you're going to
see some of the stuff on the hunt because they
were filming a lot of this stuff. But Fred was
the one who talked to all of the rookies. And
then we were sitting in the back some of the
other you know, former Jaguar players and and Fred gave
a great speech and passed on a lot of great
(44:43):
knowledge because Fred's got a great story to tell because
Fred kind of came into the league very young and
immature and then really grow, really grew throughout his career.
And it was a great message. And then after Fred
got done, Tony shared a little bit of his experience,
and then we went all into the cafeteria and then
we sat down with you know, I sat down with
(45:03):
about three different guys, you know, Strigau from Minnesota and
undrafted free I sat down with a bunch of defensive
linemen and uh and Kevin Hardy sat with some of
the linebackers, you know, and on and on and on
down Ray and then we we had dinner with them
and it was great. I had a lot of fun.
That's cool. That's really good. Yeah, it's it's a good experience.
You know. Marcus Pollard, who does a lot of the
(45:26):
player program things to help educate the young players was
obviously one of the guiding forces in all of this.
He's done it in years past, and uh, it was outstanding.
I had a really really good time with it, and
it was a great meeting all the different rookies.
Speaker 3 (45:41):
Let's say JP Shadrick is a rookie defensive end and
he's drafted pretty high as you were. If you were
sitting at that dinner and I was sitting across from me,
what would be your first piece of advice?
Speaker 2 (45:55):
Well, and I shared this with some of the guys
at the table because I got that question. They said,
if you're going to pass on anything, what would it
be the most important thing that you believe? And I said,
you know, as a young player, the one thing that
you've got to do is to make sure that your
house is in order. You know, when I say your house,
that means your personal life and your personal situation, because
if all of that is not taken care of, then
(46:19):
it's hard to focus and concentrate on playing football and
being the best that you can be. And so I said,
you know, you've got to make sure that you take
care of your own little world so that your football
world can be at its best, whether or that's you
know a lot of times JP when you have somebody
that's drafted, and some of these guys even mentioned that
it was happening already. You know, everybody wants to be
(46:40):
your best friend because you're now, you know, a pro
football player at all. You've got lots of money now,
and people are kind of pulling on you in different directions.
And some of those are friends and some of those
are even family that just and you've got to be
able to say no, and you've got to be able
to say, hey, look I can't do that. And that's
all part of keeping your house clean so that your
(47:01):
football world can be out its best. And that's that's
the one thing that I shared. I didn't go in
a great detail and have all these crazy stories, but
it was great. They asked a lot of questions, and
I asked a lot of questions of them. You know
where they're from, and uh, you know what different positions
they play and what's their strength and so it was.
It was a great time. I really enjoyed it. Really cool.
(47:22):
Good stuff there.
Speaker 3 (47:23):
Coming up next week Phase three Organized Team Activities. They
start Monday, OTA number one ten OTA practices Over the
next few weeks and then the mandatory mini camp, so
the last day of that is June twelfth. Then the
dead zone begins. So we're inside a month away from
(47:45):
being out of here for the summer. Coming quick still
work out, I mean, all the bulk of the stuff
is still to come, the OTAs in the mini camp.
I mean, yeah, although you know, there's a lot of
stuff that's already been done, but I mean the meat
and potatoes are coming.
Speaker 2 (48:02):
What do you want to see the next week? Well,
I mean, first of all, I want to see what
the offense is going to begin to look like, you
know what I mean. No, but I mean, but you'll
see kind of some of their concepts h And I
want to see the coaches on the grass. I want
to see how they interact with players. I mean, I'm
a big people watcher, and I think it's a when
(48:23):
I say I'm a people watcher, is that I love
the dynamic the coach the player, and how the coaching
staff interacts amongst themselves, how they interact with the players,
how the players respond. I mean, all of those things
to me are interesting to watch and to see what
the energy level is, to see what some of the
focus and the intensity is on, and of course, you know,
(48:47):
I'm going to be like everybody else. I mean, I'm
dying to see if Travis Hunter is going to play
offense defense? Will he do both in one practice? How's
that going to work? What's it going to look like?
I mean, we're about to see something that's never been
done really, I mean in this modern era, like I
said before, and so the curiosity curiosity of that is
(49:08):
obviously high. But also right there at the top with that,
I would put where's Trevor Lawrence at? Injured? Last year?
Not a great year? Can he get back to the
form They're propelled this football team into the playoffs a
couple of years ago, the magical comeback against the Chargers?
(49:30):
Where is he at? Is he there? Is he back
into that neighborhood? And how does this offense suit him?
And there's a lot of progressions that are built into
the system that are all timing based that Trevor's talked about,
that Liam's talked about that I'm looking forward to seeing
it's coming up next week.
Speaker 3 (49:49):
There'll be media coverage of OTA practice number one on
Monday afternoon on Jaguars dot Com, Jaguars social media, all
the Jaguars places will have Jags a m on Tuesday
to recapital as well.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
See you logs, Yeah, we'll see you next week. I'll
see you next week. I'll be here next at some point,
at least on Thursday. Yeah, definitely see you on Thursday.
Speaker 4 (50:11):
