Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to another episode of the game preview podcast, Jets
Bills in Buffalo Eating Greenberg Cynthia Freelan, going back to Buffalo.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
It feels like forever ago that Jets and Bills played
Week one. It's crazy.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
I mean, it's just this season.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
I feel like I say this every single year, but
this season in particular, I'm like.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Worit of a minute, it's week eleven, Like, how are
we here already?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah, it's gross, it's disgusting.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
It's almost Thanksgiving, which basically means it's almost Christmas, which
basically means it's twenty twenty four, which basically means it's
almost a super Bowl, which almost means it's top for
the combine.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
And it's eighty eight days till the super Bowl. That's
eighty something days. That is terrifying crazy. They said it's
not a newsletter.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
They sent a newsletter every day with like the NFL topics,
like just what's going on. It's really good read actually,
but at the top of it always tells you how
many days until the super Bowl and then and then
it's to the draft, and then it's to the start
of the season.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
You're like, oh my goodness, Like it's crazy.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
There's always something.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
Look, the New York is the city that never sleeps,
but the NFL is the sport.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
That never sleeps. And that's a fact. There's always a
ten pole event month by month.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
But in this week, Jets Bills Week eleven one, if
you're listening to this, you'll hear from Bran Boyer, Jets
special teams coordinator, about this matchup, how his unit's been doing.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
EA caught up with him. But the biggest news of
the week, Cynthia.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
And I think we should start here, is that the
Bills have fired Ken Dorsey, the offensive coordinator. After Monday
Night Football where the Broncos beat the Bills twenty four
to twenty two, wild ending out in Buffalo. Just what
was your kind of knee jerk reaction to getting rid
of someone who has been coordinating a unit that is
(01:53):
statistically pretty good.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Yeah, well, look, what's Sean mcderm gonna do. Leslie Fraser
is already coworker at the NFL Networks.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
So.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Yeah, do something.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
You got to do something.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
I'm not you know, I maybe maybe the.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
You know, Microsoft Surface tablets wanted revenge from last season.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
I'm just kidding, but no, Look, when I'm looking at
this team in general, you know they're probably just try
They probably view it as a way to shake things
up because the defense is still pretty banged up.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
I mean, de Kwon Jones.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
You know, obviously, you know Matt Mulano is huge, Lina's
past few games, Mike Hi doesn't play. So I'm just
talking about that's just the spine of the defense. Then
you add tore Davius White. Sure they got Rusul Douglas,
but you know they're not. It feels like their window
is closing. And maybe it's already closed. I mean, the
the they're they're out of the playoffs right now, and
(02:51):
if you look at their remaining schedule, it is a gauntlet.
So I think they're probably trying to shake it up
a little bit. And I mean it's not.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Really the offenses all though. So what are you gonna do?
Fire yourself?
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah, it's weird.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
I'm gonna tap out you guys. I'll see you later.
You know, it doesn't work like that.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
So it's a little weird because, like all the tweets
make crack me up. When Tuesday morning, it was like
I didn't realize it was Ken Dorsey's fault that you know,
the Broncos missed a Bill goal and then they came
back in and then they had another chance and they
made it and Josh Allen through an interception like, oh yeah,
totally Ken Dorsey's fault.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Look, I understand.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
Remember And also a tip for this weekend, Uh, they
just broke round on a massive new stadium, right and
the traffic by the stadium is a total nightmare. So
if you're there, just keep that in mind because they
don't have they destroyed a parking lot to do it.
You know, Jets fans know a little something about destroying
the parking lot to put it. Anyways, but when you're
when you're when you're going there, I think that it's
(03:53):
there's just huge expectations when you under when you undergo
a massive job like that, they're just it just raises
expectations even higher.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
So yeah, I think it's a great point.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
And the Bills have been so good for the past
couple of years that it's like, what's that next step
going to look like? And by all accounts, it seems
like the team, you know, granted some of it is
injury related, some of it might not be has taken
a step back from what we've used to seeing, at
least through the first ten weeks. They have time to
change it if that's what's going to happen with the
Buffalo Bills, but it might not. And the guy that's
(04:29):
taken over for Ken Dorsey is Joe Brady. A little
bit about him, I really feel like he had his
claim to fame in twenty nineteen when he was the
passing game coordinator for the LSU Tigers that of course
were headlined by Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson. I mean,
first of all, that offense is just saying that is ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Those three guys, wait, and you're even missing like the running.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Backs Clyde Edwards, Hilaire.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah, exactly who.
Speaker 6 (04:56):
I know that.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
This year he's not been great, but back at that time, he.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Was an exceptional running back, right, I mean he earned
himself like a very high pick by the Chiefs.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
And I mean, if we're going a step further, like
Lloyd Cushionberry, the offensive lineman, he was a high round
draft pick for the Denver Broncos and so like that
team was stacked, no doubt about it. Joe Brady gets
a job at the Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator a couple
of seasons, then he gets let go, goes to Buffalo
quarterbacks coach, and Sean mcderbott now has hired him as
(05:27):
the interim offensive coordinator. All this to say, like, I
think they're Jets fans out there, Cynthia, who are like great,
like come on, like they do the shake up now,
Like this is how it works in the NFL. A
little shakeup and then all of a sudden boom, they
play better. We saw it in Las Vegas the week
before the Jets played the Raiders, like infuse spark within
(05:48):
that Raiders locker room.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
They beat the Giants thirty to six.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Granted Tommy DeVito's playing, they're banged up, so I don't
know how much you can really take that into account,
but I think there's a group of fans who kind
of that, that's a kind of thinking they're in. Like,
of course, now the Bills are going to score fifty
two points every game, especially this week, because they just
hired or fired and then hired somebody else.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
You don't seem to be buying that at all.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
Joe Brady is not ap like number one like Antonio
Piers is a very special human being, Like he has
a ring on his finger that shows that he won
a Super Bowl, you know, and not suggesting that Joe
Brady isn't special, but he's already been there, and I
know that Antonio Peers was there too as a linebackers coach,
et cetera. But like it's just a different It's just
a different thing, right, the way that they're run and
(06:35):
the way that the you know, Sean McDermott runs a
really tight ship. He hates like I don't know if
I know all hate coaches hate penalties, but like like
there's this vein in his head because I saw on
the sideline of thot and it like like it gets
like and that's in a preseason game if there's a penalty,
so you know, look like it's just a it's the
system isn't going to change much. The maybe the communication
(07:00):
will change, meaning you know, who is in Josh Allen's
ear and what maybe that you know, Joe Brady being.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Like what do you want to do? How do you?
What play do you? Maybe it's more collaborative.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
I'm not sure we'll hear more about how this is
actually working, but it's a very tight ship. And I
think what happened before was like that is a whole
regime change. Like Josh McDaniel and Antonio Pierce are not
the same person.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Yeah, to put it mildly, yeah, they're definitely not the
same person. And like this it's weird though, because the
Bills are so talented on offense, Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs,
James Cook just to name some of the players, not
to mention guys like Gabe Davis, the two tight ends,
and Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid. But really, when you
(07:46):
look at it, it's not like the stats don't indicate
that the offense seems to be the issue.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Their top five in most categories, does it.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
That's why I'm thinking, like the Jets fans should have
before been like this offense is going to be like
this is a this is a the good on good pieces, right,
iron sharpening iron. I have that the analogy is overused, right,
The Bills offense is still really good. Yes, they can
turn the ball over, we got it. James Cook not
usually a ball turner over. He can do it too,
(08:17):
But you know, like we know that Josh Allen can
throw an intercept, got it. We know that he's good
for you know, three in that first game. Yeah, you know,
I think that maybe one of the defense or backs
for the Jets may have gotten his.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Bonus in one game. But you know, like that, why not.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
But but the truth is is it's not you know,
they I think they just needed to shake things up,
and I don't think it was.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
You know, it's going to be whether or not this Bill.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
It's all about this game will be one or loss
based on if the Jets can score enough points. It's
not about if the Bills offense is so broken, right
like this is you know, it's just to me is
that it's the Jets offense versus the Bills defense that's
going to be the question mark, not the two that
are both awesome.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Yeah. I think it's a great point.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
The other thing about the Jets and well, first of all,
the one thing about Josh Allen his passer rating at
home much better than on the road, one oh nine
point nine at home in Buffalo seventy nine. I think
point three at home. But the Jets have done a
very good job against Josh Allen in his career, let
alone under Robert Sala and what the Jets defense has
(09:25):
been doing the past two seasons. You know, you mentioned
you mentioned the Jets offense, and before we hear from
coach Boyer, I just want to talk about this a
little bit. The Jets haven't scored a touchdown the last
two games. They've scored one over their last three. It
was a fifty play or fifty yard play. A fifty play.
Could you imagine a fifty play drive? That would just
be ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
That's what penalties would you have to have in that right.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Like that would be That would just be one for
the ages.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
But regardless, it was a single play, fifty yard catch
and run. So the Jets have a player's only meeting
recently trying to work out, you know, what the issues are,
how they can fix them for a division game in
Buffalo after dropping two in a row, which a lot
of fans think that like they could have and should
have one against the Chargers and the Raiders. All this
(10:13):
to say this Buffalo Bill's defense, you kind of mentioned
it a little bit, and I'm curious where you stand.
Is a little different looking than even Week one, Tredaevius
White out of.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
The lineup, Matt Mulano out of the lineup.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
What do you make of the Buffalo Bills defense as
it currently stands.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Well, there's some areas to target the you know, the front.
I think you know we o. Von Miller's good.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
He hasn't played to the best of his ability this
season so far. He was nursing an injury in the
beginning of the season, obviously coming off I our et cetera.
But like aj Hefpanessa has really taken a big step forward.
His get off time is really fast. Like again, you know,
I'm trying to point out areas that could disrupt the opportunity.
If they can get it to that linebacker level and
target the linebacker or the safety is not named Jordan Poyer,
(11:02):
they're gonna be in good shape.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
The cornerbacks.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Last game, Christian Benford didn't play, so they're at like
cornerback number three to begin with, right, So Rasul Douglas
just learning sort of what the principles of this defense
happened to be. He's a good fit, but he's not
really in it all yet. But it will be whether
or not Zach Wilson has enough time up front to
execute or can get it to Breeze Hall because you
can run against the Bills. You can run and you
(11:25):
can run fast against the Bills, like Russell Wilson showed
you that. Maybe not the running backs for the Broncos,
but Russell Wilson showed you that you can run fast
against so.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
And that is something that Zach Wilson took advantage of
a little bit against the Raiders. So definitely something to
keep an eye on, as did Jets play the Bills.
But you know, we often talk about offense and defense.
Let's focus on special teams. Let's actually hear from coach
Boyer with EA.
Speaker 7 (11:50):
We got a special guest today. It is Jets' special
teams coordinator Bran Boyer.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
Thank you so much for joining us anytime, Buddy. Good
to be here.
Speaker 7 (11:57):
Jets Bills this weekend. A lot of good memory, I
imagine from week one. Can it take me back to
over time?
Speaker 5 (12:04):
Well, it was obviously a big challenge. These guys have
a really good group. Buffalo is very physical, and they've
got a really good group of core guys and and
really good specialists and they're really well coached. So to
start off the year like that, you know, it was
special in that environment. And it's one of the since
I've been here, I think in eight years. I think
that's probably the best environment I've ever seen around here.
(12:25):
And to end it that way was was special and
and you know, just got to continue to try to
get that returning game going every week.
Speaker 7 (12:32):
How pleased are you with your kicking combination of Greg
Zerline and Thomas Morstead.
Speaker 5 (12:36):
They've done a fantastic job arguably, you know, to Pro
Bowl type of players so far this year. And they've
been really consistent of me. And they're such great guys to
come in every day, and they take a leadership role
in the room and and you know, can't forget any
and you know, snapping the ball to him, that's not
such a great job. And and you know, really happy
with that group of guys. Quality, great man, great leaders,
(13:01):
and great teammates.
Speaker 7 (13:02):
From a coverage perspective, Can Morestead be too good? Sometimes?
Speaker 5 (13:07):
I don't think you can ever be too good, you know,
just my humble opinion. I mean, he's he's arguably a
Hall of Famer with him, you know, whether it's directionally
or whatever, whether it's hanging time, whether it's distance control,
trying to create you know, a chance and eliminate those
chances for the guys to back there to beat us.
And and you know, certainly the last couple of weeks,
we you know, he's punted the ball pretty well. We
(13:30):
just haven't covered it the way we need to be
and it's not it's not up to our standard. And
what we need to get accomplished, how rare.
Speaker 7 (13:36):
Is what do you accomplish against the Giants When you're
talking about three balls down inside the five yard.
Speaker 5 (13:41):
That was one of the best overall punting performances I've
ever seen in my life. I mean it was it
was a special performance injury league.
Speaker 7 (13:49):
What happens when one of the best coverage guys in
the National Football League, like Justin Hardy goes down.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
You know, it's been tough because he's he's our leader
of the room. When you take a player like him
and like him away from your room, it has her
and it's just a matter of trying to make adjustments.
And then the guys that are that are relied upon
to come in and pick up the slack, so to speak.
They're doing a solid job. You know, we just got
to tackle and you know, I think we've we've missed
too many tackles in the last several weeks, and and
(14:17):
we weren't in the spots that we need to work
with our with our core, and we've got to do
a better job. You know, coaches and players are getting
those put in their guys, our guys in positions to
make those uh make those plays, and and that needs
to really really improve to give us a chance going
down the stretch. Here.
Speaker 7 (14:31):
What's Erv's potential in the National Football League? Because Salas
said when he made this club special Teams Wolf.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
I think that that he has as much natural talent
as any any player that I've worked with. He really does.
He's good in all phases, blocking phases and coverage phases.
I think he's got a really bright future.
Speaker 7 (14:50):
How valuable has been Jamie sure would for you guys
and defensively comes up with a big play last week
against the Raiders that keeps this team in game.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
He's been outstanding and a guy that has taken the
leadership role when when Hardy went down. You know, for
the group. You know, a guy that doesn't make many mistakes,
He's always on point, he always knows his stuff, and
those kind of guys are invaluable to guys. Like us.
Speaker 7 (15:14):
So Sherwood had the force against Josh Jacobs. The guy
who recovered that fumble was Ashton Davis. What can you
say about his versatility cross support.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
He's the quarterback of our of our you know, pun
team and gets all and makes all the calls and
does all the the stuff that we ask him to do,
and and uh, you know, to see his progression since
he's been here along with Sherwood, both those guys have
bought in one hundred percent. It's a good thing to have,
that's for sure.
Speaker 7 (15:40):
We started this interview talking about X. He's so special
with the ball in his hands. He's a dynamic runner.
What is the transition for him in terms of from
college to pro and when saying, hey, I got this opportunity,
I could take it out now or sometimes I got
(16:02):
to live to fight and all the day.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
You know, there's a feel back there that all that
all players have and the and the special returners in
this league. They understand when to take a chance and
when not to take a chance. Once you get the
ball in his hands, he's you know, he can take
it to the house at any time. Talking to other
coaches after the games and everything like that, they're the
way they kick toing is different. He has a healthier
respect from all the other coaches that we play in.
(16:24):
And I think there's no better games than what you're
seeing in the last two weeks. And I want how
they tried to control him, kicking it out of bounds
and kicking it up with five ozh hang times and
stuff like that so he doesn't get the opportunities to
beat him.
Speaker 7 (16:36):
How big is this game Sunday Jets Bills return matchup?
And also can you speak to playing in Buffalo and
Western New York and what potentially could happen with the weather.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
Yeah, it's it's it's always a tough place to play,
even going back to when I was playing. Those fans
up there are awesome. They do a really good job,
you know, room for their team, they're they're crazy up there.
It's it's pretty cool environment to play in. We're gonna
have to be on point this week, and we've got
to do more in the return game specifically, you know,
on our covers has got to be on point. We'll
(17:08):
try to get them there for sure. It's going to
be critical for our special teams to play really well.
Brett I appreciate your time as always anytime.
Speaker 1 (17:17):

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Clap it up, Yeah, what is up? What's up?
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Which way I'm trying to point?
Speaker 2 (18:05):
You should lean your point to your left, lean to
your right.
Speaker 6 (18:09):
Here we can high five.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Yep, yep, yep. That there he is. There he is. Boom,
there we go, there we go.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
Perfect.
Speaker 5 (18:15):
That was tough.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
That was that was awesome.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Look it's it's getting darker. Teams.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
That's our special teams right there.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
Yeah, I love it. I love it.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
I have something insider for you to for you to
watch this game too in Buffalo, for everyone who goes,
if you notice that after the bills, whenever they have
that tea out right after kicking, whenever they're going to
kick it to to start the game or whatever, there's
a man who runs out and runs back in and
they time him.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
And there's even a Twitter account.
Speaker 4 (18:46):
So silly, but I love these inside stuff. Like you're like,
why why do they do that? But it's it's what
they do.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Do you think, what do you think your time would be?
Speaker 3 (18:54):
Mine would be terrible because I'd be like, I'd want
to go slow. I'd be like, I want to see
what this skills right now.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
But you've ran like twenty six marathons. You can't be so.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Yeah. I don't run them fast. I mean I run
them at like a decent pace.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
No, you're being too modest.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
I would set what would you set the over under
at Pilano for Cynthia's tea grap if she were full sprint?
Speaker 8 (19:14):
Ten seconds at most maybe eight? So what sideline tee
to back?
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Let's let's do some math here, fifty three yards wide
right sideline sideline, you got to run halfway essentially.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Yeah, so a little more than twenty five yards. All right? Wait,
hold on, so you're.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Running a total you're basically running, yeah, fifty yards, so
your fifty yard dash with change of direction.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
A little more with the change of direction, and you
have to scoop down them.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
Yeah, eight to ten seconds, Yeah, eight to ten seconds.
Speaker 6 (19:44):
She's fast.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Okay, but what what is the overrunner? It's not can't
be eight to ten all right, nine and a half okay.
I like that.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
Take over?
Speaker 6 (19:51):
You take the over, Cynthia.
Speaker 8 (19:53):
We we the New York just have a tea kid
who runs out and grabs them.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
I know, I love when it's a kid, but now
it's like I just think it's funny. That's like a
full blown man.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
You know, you know it's going to happen now, right,
Polano and I are going to be in the press
box timing whoever it is.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
At the there's a Twitter account. There's a Twitter account.
You can fallow.
Speaker 1 (20:12):
I don't even mean the bills guy, I mean like,
next whoever runs out of kids life, we will be
timing them.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Unbeknownst to the kid.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
You know that tea kid needs it.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
That is incredible. This was a great way to.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
Start to do that. That's what I need to train
Gordy to do.
Speaker 6 (20:27):
We don't have a tea dog dog.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
That sounds like a minor league thing.
Speaker 6 (20:31):
It is like a bad dog.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
Yeah, like yeah, Way brings this dog to practice. When
I was there, the dog was at training camp.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Do you think her Herbstreets dog would do it.
Speaker 6 (20:41):
I think the Georgia dog would do it.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
I'll's time. Do you think you could be faster than Uga, Cynthia.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
Yes, okay, I could be dougga, I could be out there.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
He gets tired, Yeah, just crashing midway.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
We can't be doing that to Aga. All right, Red Rock,
I think so that was a good little appetizer.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
I feel back. I'm a little sleepy, but I think
I'm back.
Speaker 8 (21:05):
Then that fired me up, perfect, all right. Ethan's awake,
Cynthia is awake. I'm barely awake. But I want to
do with you guys a little game preview podcast rewind.
So this is our first rematch of the season. Obviously
we get three rematches for people who follow football, and
I want to see how this matchup is different and
or similar to the one early in the season.
Speaker 6 (21:26):
Like it fun like it.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
I like it because it's different and we can see
this is like this could be like a freezing Cold
Takes or Cold Takes exposed.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
Yes, yeah, or it could be good.
Speaker 8 (21:36):
I got four Cynthia Freeland quotes from the first podcast,
Free There Go. I would like to read off and
we can we can compare and contrasts a little bit
and find out how I want to find out how
this matchup will be similar different from the experts perspectives
you to our my free experts.
Speaker 6 (21:51):
I get to hang out with every day.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
So sure, sound good? Yeah, I'm ready to roll. I
haven't lik hing where this is going already.
Speaker 6 (21:56):
All right.
Speaker 8 (21:56):
The first one we're gonna start with is James Cook.
Buffalos are on back. He you guys like lightly mentioned earlier,
but so here's Cynthia's This was Cynthia's expectations. He is
going to be there inside and outside guy, but be
especially impactful inside and run behind those guards that they
invested in. It'll be interesting to see how he is
outside of Damien Harris. Because James Cook has a lot
(22:17):
of pass catching versatility. I think this game and to
start the season is going to be high volume for
James Cook.
Speaker 6 (22:25):
Now, obviously, Damien Harris.
Speaker 8 (22:26):
Was placed on ir after like a kind of a
scary neck injury in Week six, and Latavius Murray has
picked up his slack a little bit.
Speaker 6 (22:32):
He was signed in May. But Cynthia was pretty much right.
Speaker 8 (22:36):
I mean, through ten games he has one hundred and
twenty attempts, six hundred and fifteen yards five yards per carry.
But so Cynthia, from your vantage point, how has Cook
been used to start the year and does it feel
like similar usage to Game one to now?
Speaker 3 (22:50):
I think they're expanding his role a bit.
Speaker 4 (22:52):
But Latavius Murray has come in and absolutely just been
the athletic back, not just when when not just after
Damien Harris is injury, but also before the right tackle
Spencer Brown, who gets a number of penalties called on him.
Speaker 3 (23:07):
He's actually really good at run blocking.
Speaker 4 (23:09):
I did not expect him to take such a big
step forward and run blocking. So I would say that
it's still a big like they need to figure out
more with the run game, especially in the red area.
They cannot have weird, untimely turnovers there. But you know,
I think it's probably like eighty percent of where they
would like it to be and where maybe it could
(23:31):
be if they had some different They do some weird stuff, right,
like don't run it on third and twelve, you know
what I mean, Like put him in a situation to succeed.
Speaker 2 (23:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Well, the other thing I was just going to say
off that is like, as it pertains to this matchup,
the Jets are coming off of performance where Josh Jacobs
had over eighty five yards in the second half alone,
Like they did a great job in the first half.
And I'm not saying the Raiders brand of football is
the same as the Bills, but when I feel like
when the Jets have gotten bitten on defense, it's typically
(24:01):
been on the ground, whether that's the quarterback, whether that's
the running back, and obviously with James Cook, and then
you factor in Josh Allen like being able to.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
Use his legs a lot.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
I definitely think that James Cook is somebody to watch,
especially like how the Jets are going to prepare for
him and rebound theoretically after letting Josh Jacobs have a
season high in terms of rushing yards.
Speaker 4 (24:22):
Yeah, I mean, there's two schools of thought there though,
because James Cook had a very weird game last week,
and I don't know if, like Ken Dorsey tended to
when someone made a mistake, he would try to let
them fix their mistake. And he held James Cook out
for a long.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
Time in that last matchup.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
It was kind of strange, not strange, but not what
you typically see from his data. So it will be
interesting to see if Latavius Murray gets more of the
kind of easier first and second down stuff that they want.
It might be Latavious more than James Cook, is my
only point.
Speaker 8 (24:58):
So it sounds like to me, James Cook got doghouse
in that first game, is that true?
Speaker 3 (25:02):
No, last game?
Speaker 4 (25:04):
Last, last game, sorry last he got out of it too.
He got out of it to second half, he got
out of it. So I'm not sure what to make
of that. So if you go back and watch that
last game as you're preparing for this one, like you know,
all fans obviously were newing it on your game pass
or your NFL Plus, you'll notice like he, you know,
fumble lost, you know, lost the ball. They didn't put
(25:24):
him back in until like the second half. Then they
were like go out there and do something, and he
actually started to play better than the second half. But
I don't know with Ken Dorsey gone if that's going
to mean more Latavious and James Cook split. Like if
you're a fantasy player and you're really desperate, like if
if Latavius Murray is somehow available in your fantasy league,
that might be one to pick up.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
That's my only point.
Speaker 8 (25:43):
Yeah, in that first matchup, he had twelve carries for
forty six yards, no touchdowns, three point eight yards of carry,
so relatively uneffective, sleepy, sleepy.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
But then to Cynthy's point, last week, twelve carries, a
buck nine and a forty two yard run, which you
kind of like dribbled to himself.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
Yeah, that's kind of cool.
Speaker 8 (26:02):
That's pretty nice. That's pretty all right, we can rock on.
I appreciate you guys there. I needed my expertise. That
was or feel I feel smarter than I did a
couple of minutes ago. All Right, So Cynthia, this is
your expectations week one for Quinn Williams. And also remember
this was week one, so this was also coming off
of the preseason. So Cynthia said, I'm not expecting an
encore what's better than an encore?
Speaker 2 (26:22):
Like an encore plus that a great quote.
Speaker 8 (26:28):
It's another year inside someone's system where you're you're really
featured and you have to stop multiple players on every down.
Speaker 6 (26:35):
So Cynthia, I would say you were right.
Speaker 8 (26:38):
I know his sack numbers are not fantastic, but like,
as a team, the Jets have one hundred pressures, which
is second best in the league, thirty five QB knocked
down six bests in the league. Eleven point eight percent
of QB hurries on dropbacks, and Sala said that Quinn
is single handedly opening up opportunities for other guys. So
would you assess his year as such despite only having
(26:59):
one sack.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
I don't care about the sex. I mean, I do
care about the sex.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
But to assess this to the season and say that
his one sack makes him not play it being as
effective as last year is incorrect. He's being double and
triple teamed at a much higher rate than he was
last season, which allows other people to get in, which
is exactly what coach said, right, So not just that,
but like, you know, I think if I'm like you know,
hopefully Quinn Williams and Bryce Huff have the same agent,
(27:25):
because I think that Quinn has helped Bryce put himself
in a situation to get paid.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
I think Quinn's been great this year, like he has.
It's so I understand the sack production. Everyone wants more sacks. Yeah,
you could have twenty five and you would want more.
And I think with Quinn, like granted, I'm not an
expert in defensive line play, but I did see next
Gen Stats put out something that he's leading the league
(27:53):
in terms of pressures when double teamed, and like that
to me speaks to how effective Quinn Williams is now.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Also, I will.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
Say I think it would be a lot different for
that whole defensive line, especially quinnin if the Jets, and
I'm interested to see if and when this happens, are
playing with a lead, because if you're playing with somewhat
of a significant lead, I don't know if you can
devote the same type of resources to double team Quinn
Williams every single play where you got to get the
(28:24):
ball out, you got to get the ball out deep,
and then you're leaving one on ones on the outside
for Bryce Huff As Baldinger calls him to the Bugatti or
Jermaine Johnson or any of these guys. Like I think
that if the Jets were to play with the lead,
you would see you'd see like Hunting season a little
bit more.
Speaker 6 (28:40):
Yeah, if you go back.
Speaker 4 (28:41):
And also they don't really blitz a ton, right they're
doing this with bringing.
Speaker 6 (28:46):
Four yes, which is incredibly.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
It's not a high blitz. Blitz has turned into sacks.
Speaker 4 (28:53):
You know, sometimes people forget that when we say pressure,
we don't mean blitz.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
Blitz and pressure are two different things.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
So you know, it's it's a it's it's just it's
a function of how they're playing. They don't like it's
kind of a good thing that you don't that you
can be this effective on defense and you don't even
have him getting these massive sack numbers like that means
your defense is really good, Like we want team wins.
Speaker 8 (29:15):
Here, Cynthia, you also are kind of like a Bills expert,
is how has this Bill's offensive line been throughout the
year since that first matchup?
Speaker 6 (29:24):
Is this something that's susceptible to our defense?
Speaker 4 (29:27):
They're the left side of the Bills line is very
good with pass protection. The right side is not. The
right side is better with run blocking. The left side
is less. They're not bad at it, but they're less good.
Like the left tackle Dion Dawkins left guard. Those two together,
they've allowed one sack this season there and by the way,
Dion Dawkins has allowed no sacks. So, but the two
(29:50):
the left side is very good. The right side, that's
where the sacks come from, and that's where the pressures
come from. Obviously Josh Allen moves around a lot, so
it's a little bit different, but that's where the that's
where the sacks come from.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
Definitely something to keep an eye on.
Speaker 8 (30:03):
Absolutely, absolutely. All right, let's rock onto the next one.
Speaker 4 (30:05):
If you want a second you know, oh okay, yeah, tips,
that's a good tip.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Let's do one more more.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
Your quality control coach already knows this, so not freaking
news here.
Speaker 8 (30:18):
All right, we're gonna do one more, Cynthia. Are you
okay with hearing one more of your quotes?
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Of course?
Speaker 2 (30:23):
All right?
Speaker 6 (30:24):
Fantastic, All right.
Speaker 8 (30:26):
Quote you said, you said you have to give Stefan
Diggs his respect because he's one of the best receivers
in the league. But they have the recipe, and they,
meaning the New York Jets, have the recipe for not
allowing him to be an impact guy. Defenses have to
choose what they want to take away, and the Jets
have chosen to take away Digs. Now, statistically speaking, you
(30:49):
weren't completely right. Week one, Digs obviously had ten receptions
for one hundred and two yards and a touchdown. But
throughout the year, diggs numbers have been kind of up
and down. He started really hot five straight hundred plus
one hundred plus receiving yard games or five out of
six games the start of the year, and then the
last four weeks has been under one hundred, while the
Jets have only gotten better nine undred and twenty four
receiving yuards by wide receivers in twenty twenty three, least
(31:12):
amount in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (31:12):
So, Cynthia, what do you say about this?
Speaker 2 (31:15):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (31:15):
Good take, but not your best tag, not.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
My best take. Well, two things.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
Number One, you know when all like, if you look
at Josh Allen's interceptions and go back, Like, if you
ever want to know where someone's vulnerabilities are, watch who
they're targeting when they throw an interceptions.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
So go back. It's really fascinating. Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen,
Joe Burrow.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
It's so fascinating to brock Purty, but he's only played
seventeen games, right, Like just going to watch who they're
targeting and what they're trying to push it to. And
it seems like almost all of Josh Allen's interceptions have
come on passes intended for Gabe Davis, at least recent ones.
And part of that is because Stefan Diggs he's got
this like he had most yards on a hitch route
(31:59):
in the NFL since he joined the Bills, and the
second is like ghost other than that, like those and
so you're gonna stop him on the hitch, then now
they got to go to Gave Davis and Josh could
push it down the field because they're afraid to lose.
Like so that's kind of what I've been noticing when
I watch it. And again, it's a really fascinating thing.
(32:20):
Like if you go back and watch the target when
an interception happens, you can you can You're.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
Like, ah, don't do that, Like obviously it.
Speaker 4 (32:27):
Happens too fast for someone to not do it right,
but like it's it's just it's fascinating. So you know,
I think part of it is as teams have devoted more.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
Resources to stiff On Diggs.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
Then there's been weird maybe the I don't know what's
going on with the with the other part, but I
think you see more resources devoted to him in double coverage,
not just you know, one on one.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
And I think Stefan Diggs to your point, like up
and down, like just statistically, but it almost feels like
kind of like quinnin like he's such a good player,
where like you do have to give him respect because
if you don't, will burn you. And the stats are
what they are in terms of against the Jets in
Week one, but the Jets did a great job against
thefon Diggs last season. So and I do think that
(33:14):
I think that the Jets defense has gotten better as
the season has gone on. I know they were great
that first game and they've really been great all year.
But to Cynthia's point, like it's not going to be
about the Jets defense and the Bills offense. It's going
to be about the Jets offense and the Bills defense,
Like that's where this game comes down to. So we
can talk about Stefan Diggs and I think that he's
(33:34):
a phenomenal player and you know the connection he has
with Josh Allen is great. I'm pretty sure I saw
something that, like talking about their stats since they were together,
like where it ranks in the NFL since he was
acquired in twenty twenty, and it's like it's.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
The Krem Dela Krem.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
But to Cynthia's point, it's just going to come down
to the Jets offense, which is what's been missing from
their games.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
There are so many like I'm not expecting Garrett Wilson
to need to catch a pass like he did in
Week one, but there are so many holes to that
secondary that I just think, like if I would devote,
I would put two people on Garrett Wilson every single
down and just make make them beat you somehow somewhere
else right, like because Garrett Wilson will dice up that secondary,
(34:22):
like the way he runs such precise, precise routes and
his ability to create separation when it really doesn't look
like there should be any. Like I see people press
him and he's not like the biggest guy, but it's
like he doesn't even care.
Speaker 3 (34:34):
Like he reminds me of Gordy. Gordy like a cat
will hiss in his face.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
He's like what's up Cat, Like he doesn't care, Like
that's Garrett Wilson, Like it's the same thing.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
And I feel like, just Cynthia's point, if you're the
if you're the Bills, you're probably gonna be like, hey,
we're gonna stop Breeze Hall or try to like we
see the stat or not that, not that Sean McDermot
and his staff are like we see the stats when
it's well, like you know, Breeze Hall is just a
player and the Jets are a different team when he
gets going, like in Week one and that was he
(35:05):
had ten carries, a buck twenty seven and eighty three
yard run.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
And that was on a pitch count.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
So now that he's off the pitch count, Like to
Cynthia's point, that's really where I'm looking at too.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
Yes, it's brees Haw.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
To me, Breesehall probably determines this game like the maybe
not the strategy to get him going, how about.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
That the strategy to get Brise cooking? What like bris cook?
Speaker 8 (35:30):
If I can add one more thing, with these divisional matchups,
I feel like these guys know each other so so
so well that it kind of comes down to this
is one of my favorite terms field tilters. These are
guys like Quinnin, guys like Brice who, while it may
not visually be affecting the game, they're tilting the field.
They're forcing people to go in a direction that they
don't normally go in because they're just drawing so much attention.
(35:52):
So I feel like games like this come down to
it divisional matchups where you know the guys so well.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
Watch ed Oliver and watch aj Epanessa.
Speaker 4 (35:59):
It's the to me at Oliver, aj Epinessa in the
middle of that defense for the Bills and Breeze Hall,
that's the Those are the two because you're gonna get
a few deep plays to Garrett Wilson, but you need
to have like first and second down be good enough
so that you're in the third and short, so stay
in structure.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Also, Joe Tipman just shout out to him because you
were talking about at Oliver and Ajpinessa, specifically at Oliver
defense tackle. But Joe Tipman zero pressures allowed forty six
pass block snaps in terms of his second career game
at center last week against the Raiders. So here are
the tips for if you're going to Jets Bills, watch.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
Out for at Oliver tipman on.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Watch out for Joe Tipman. That was good. That was good.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
Watch out for at Oliver, watch out for Ajpinessa, watch
out for the tea man, and watch out for the
traffic anything else.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
The best wing in Buffalo is where Bill Barbill bar Bill. Okay,
you're a Buffalo guy.
Speaker 6 (37:02):
You know, the Duft's kind of guy.
Speaker 8 (37:03):
But that's just just classic.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
Okay, so Duff's bar Bill, I've never been to either.
I've been to Gabriel's Gate.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
That was good.
Speaker 4 (37:10):
So yeah, I mean and and again watch the T
guy and that's that.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
You got it?
Speaker 2 (37:15):
Can we call him T Man or is that like man?
Speaker 3 (37:18):
I got to figure out what his name is. I'm
sure he has a name. He's a man that runs
after tea. I don't know what's funny.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
See guy T Man, you know.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
What this grown man? You are grown. You're fully grown, sir.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
We're still setting the overall.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
I think we might have to record like us running
after the t's and center out over unders.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
That's that's our homework for week twelve.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
As the Jets take on the yep Bills this week,
then short week against the Dolphins, We'll still be rock
and rolling here on the game preview podcasts presented by LifeLock.
If you're watching the Jets of four twenty five Eastern
Jets bills in week eleven,
