Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to another episode of the Game Preview Podcast, presented
by LifeLock Ethan Greenberg Cynthia Freeland. As always, back in
the fold, week ten Jets Raiders, the Jets on a
short week going to Las Vegas. We'll bring in John
Polano for a little gambling segment. Later on in the show,
you'll hear from Robert Sala, who caught up with EA
(00:25):
Eric Allen breaking down all things Jets Raiders with a
little review of Jets Chargers. But Cynthia, let's start with Daradas.
That was an awful That was so bad Raiders. Maybe
maybe we shouldn't do that, because we.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Are shouldn't do that nowhere we're banned.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Yeah we are not. If it was dub Airs, that's
a lot easier. But I don't feel like I have
the I don't know what you would call it, like the.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Rough Like devin't smoked enough packs of cigarettes in your
life to be able to pull.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
That's a good thing. I would say. I've never smoked
a single puff of any cigarette.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
In my life, either of I.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
That's a virtual high five right there. Anyway, we're off
to a great start here on the Game Preview Podcast.
We are very much on track. It's almost like we're
in Las Vegas. You know, you never really know what's
going to happen, but the Jets are traveling to Las Vegas.
I can see John Pilano to my right, just like
losing it over here, and we'll have to get his
(01:27):
opinion later. But he's cracking up silently. So we're off
to a great start. The Jets are in Las Vegas.
They're on Sunday night football. It is what it is.
If you're a fan, I've seen all the tweets that's like, Ey,
the Jets are on Sunday night. Look, the Jets are
on Sunday night football. It's two major markets. How do
the Jets correct what just happened Monday night, Cynthia, Because
it was a weird game on Monday, for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
So weird.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Keep everything clean, meaning make sure that whatever's going on
with the O line and whatever's going on with the
structure of the offense just needs to reflect the fact
that Max Crosby is not He's going to look at
exactly what happened with those eight sacks last game, and
he's going to try to replicate as much of that
as possible, and they don't have as many pressure cookers
as the Chargers, meaning the Chargers really have two really
(02:12):
great guys in Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa, and Bosa
getting more and more healthy. But Max Crosby is a
really big problem. His pressure rate in the league, his
get off time, he's up there with Miles Garrett in
terms of speed of sack, his speed of his attack,
all of those things that could be a potential problem.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
So getting the ball out quickly, staying.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
In this within the structure of the offense, and maybe potentially,
you know, not as many turnovers that could help too.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
You know, Max Crosby nine and a half sacks tied
for second in the NFL. The person with the second
most on the Raiders is Trayvon Mayrik, the safety. There's
like a lot of players that have two sacks one
and a half sacks, but Max Crosby is one hundred
percent the guy you have to keep your eye on.
I like the term pressure cooker. By the way, Max
Crosby is a pressure cooker and he is a he's
(03:02):
just I don't know if I can say the word donkey,
but he's a badass. Can I say that sick Cough.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Well, I can say, well, listen, if Antonio Pierce can
give the press or he did at the end of
his game, we can have one bleep in this one.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
He said the effort like thirty times, so we are
totally fine with one donkey.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Okay, Well, Sick Cough told me, I can say badass,
so I'm not gonna like belabor the point. But Max
Crosby is a badass. He's tatted up, he's I love
the nickname the Condor that Brian Baldinger has given him
because of his length. I mean, I don't know where
Baldy comes up with his nicknames, but the Condor is
definitely up there. And the Jets right now, in terms
(03:51):
of their old line, they.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Never Baldi comes up with I know where bald h Well,
if there's.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Another one behind his ear, yeah he does.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Some jokes are just for us.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Brian Baldinger can a test with I've seen this with
my own eyes. Chewed a piece of gum and realizing
he's like, oh, we're about to do the interview, take
it out the gum, put it behind the ear lobe
so the camera cannot see it, and the second the
interview is over takes it out from behind the ear
lobe and choose it. Yeah, that's a tough move.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
That's a tough anyway. So that's how you come up
with good nicknames. You have gumb behind your ear.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Confession hour after seeing Baldi do it, I had to
do a postgame hit once and I was like, you
know what, I don't know what to do with my gum.
I didn't see any garbage areas near, any trash cans
near me, and I said, I'm going to do the
Baldi and I did it. I put the gum behind
my ear because of him, and I.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Have too much hair for that. I'm not I'm not
even gonna try that too much.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Now you would have to cut your hand after the fact.
That would be bad. Okay. Well back to Jets Raiders.
Max Crosby nine and a half sacks, Billy Turner, who
played right tackle for the Jets against the Los Angeles Chargers,
dealing with a hand injury. Robert Salid did say it
was a little concerning in terms of the injury. We'll
see what happens with the status of Dwayne Brown. There's
(05:19):
a chance that the Jets could start a sixth different
offensive line combination, which would definitely is not the way
that the Jets had a vision the way this going
up front, coming on the heels of what happened last
season along the offensive line. But I want to focus
on the Raiders here, Cynthia, because without like really analyzing
(05:41):
anything about this game, if you're a casual football fan,
this is a great Jets spot in terms of who
you think is going to win. The Jets losing twenty
seven to six on Monday Night the Raiders. They got
the first win under the head coach Jitters out of
the way. But it doesn't feel like you can take
a whole lot out of the Raiders' performance beating the
(06:05):
Giants thirty to six last week in Vegas because it
was the Tommy DeVito Show again for New York.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Yeah, I mean well and no Darren Waller, right Like,
it just felt like there were so many injuries and
so many changes that I wasn't even sure what I
was looking at. But I will say you still have
to factor in the Aidan O'Connell, who's a rookie, and
that's the second start. And it's weird because if you
think about there's a lot of change going on all
at the same time, right, like the head coaches out,
the GM is out, the people who are calling the
(06:36):
plays are changed. Everything's different, the structure is different. And
what really sometimes happens in these situations you do actually
see like a statistical bump. There's like something that happens
where the players get like, you know, they know they've
gotten someone fired, right, and I don't know what, I
don't know how it happens, but you see this weird
little bump sometimes when you fire someone mid season, it's
I'm not happy about it, but it is a it's
(06:57):
a mathematical finding.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
And when I'm looking at what they.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Planned for Aidan O'Connell, obviously, quick passes, that's really just
going to be what the recipe is, especially with Quinn
Williams coming at you in this entire Jets defensive line.
But he had the fastest time to throw for any
guy this season. And we've seen some really fast passes
from Tua, We've seen some really fast passes from Dak
Prescott even but this was like two point two four
seconds something crazy like that was the average.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
So they're just trying to do really simple, easy things.
Bang dash. Jacob's upfront keep going.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Is the first game we've really seen his usage go
back to what I would say like what we expected
or normal whatever that means. And of course DeVonta Adams
drew away a bunch of coverage, so you know that
was a change.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
And it's not like everyone's.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Being like, you know, the Giants defense, especially without Leonard Williams,
they were going to be great, Like you know, that's
a big change up front for them too, So there
was just a that was like, you know, all of
the pots of change all right at the same time,
and this emotional leadership from Antony Pierce, which you have
to I mean everyd like these guys are going to
run through a wall for him. That is the truth,
(08:02):
like you saw de Monte Adams say it himself. So
it's just kind of strange thing. But quick passes will
still be a theme that you can carry forward and
Josh Jacobs into this next matchup.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
I know this is going to be weird to say,
but like after because I know what the social media
reaction was Monday night and Tuesday morning and same thing
in terms of the chatter on the local radio stations.
But if you're the Jets going into this game, I
feel like, if you're a fan of the Jets, you
(08:31):
should be feeling pretty good about your chances here. And
obviously the offense has been struggling, to say the least,
But when you're looking at what the Raiders have done
offensively lately. First of all, the Jets just held Justin
Herbert to one hundred and thirty six passing yards a
O'Connell and a thirty to six win over the Giants
had two hundred and nine no touchdowns, no picks. To
(08:54):
your point earlier about Josh Jacobs twenty six attempts ninety
eight yards. That's an average of three three point two
or three point eight. Excuse me, he had two touchdowns.
DeVante Adams hasn't scored a touchdown since September. He hasn't
had over sixty yards since Week five. Like this Jets
defense is coming to play, and I feel like if
(09:14):
the Jets defenses has playing at the level in which
it has been over the past couple of weeks, the
Jets will have a very good chance to win this game.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
I mean, I think a defensive touchdown could actually be
like the reason they win it. But you know, I'm
looking at that score from last week against the Chargers,
and it's like a it's like fake news, right, Like
the if you look at the kind of until maybe
the very end of the fourth quarter, it was far
more manageable. And when you turn the ball over that
many times and you give such favorable yardage to another team,
(09:46):
it's not really your real defense's capabilities.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Right.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
It's not like they were smoking sauce on every play
with Keenan, Like, that's not what was happening here, right,
They weren't getting chunk yards every single play. Sure, Austin
Eckler did have a really good game, but it's not
the situation where you're just getting like, hey, we're giving
up seven seven yards per rush, that's great. That's not
what was happening. So it was a misleading final score
(10:10):
when you go back and watch what was actually happening,
Like Jets defense is, I'm not worried about the Jets
defense at all. It was that to me was it
was untimely turnovers and then putting yourself in a situation
where after the turnover you sort of compounded it because
you had to then put yourself in higher leverage situations,
which never makes things better.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Yeah, I think I think that this is going to
be a favorable matchup and for the Jets defense. If
you have the Jets defense in fantasy, I would suggest
you play them. If they're available, I would suggest you
pick them up pretty quickly because that is a good
matchup this week for the New York Jets.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
And talk about Olignes the Raiders, O Ligne very targetable.
I mean, you know, you have to remember there was
a huge change for the pass rushing quotient of the
Giants front. Right, you lose a guy who's very important
part of this defense key, and you know that defense
is gonna blitz you know, like what with death taxes
(11:06):
and wink blitzing, Like you know that's going to happen, right,
So without you know, your main guy who's been really
the anchor on this team since he was he came
there was you know, that's that's a lot of change
all at once. So I just don't think you can
look at that and be like, hey, their old line
is fixed. Josh Jacobs fixed everything. No, no, no one
was coming. I mean they may have been blitzing, but
(11:28):
like if I was to blitz, it's not gonna do anything,
you know.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
I saw I saw next Gen Stats had a stat
that was like an O'Connell was pressured on six of
his twenty five dropbacks or something like that, which is
a very low rate. And this Jets defense, specifically the
line since Week five, Cynthia, Bryce Hoff leads the league
in pressure rate. Jermaine Johnson's third, John Franklin Myers is fifth,
So that's three of the top five. Bryce hawf this
(11:55):
is crazy too. He could become the first player in
next Gen Stats era history to lead the league and
pressure rate back to back years.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
I'm counting out the money he's gonna get yeah this
off season.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Good job, Bryce Hoff.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
I mean, look, sorry, sorry, brass to the Jet, to
the Jets, you created a monster like that's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
It's exactly what you want to happen, exactly.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
It's an ode. It's an ode to Bryce Hoff, it's
an ode to the Jets coaching staff. It's an o
to Joe Douglas. Signing Bryce Hoff like it, this is
what you want. You want an undrafted guy to work
his tail off to where you feel like you need
to pay him. It's a win win win for everybody involved.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
So the only thing that needs to add to make
it a win win win. What I think the radio
like when I listen to the radio calls, they need
more like huff and puff and blow your quarterback down
some like dad. There just needs to be more dad
jokes related to Bryce Huff. Then we'll get the win
win win that we're all here for, you know, a
win win right now.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
But we need more dad jokes about it's just the
perfect name.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
For that, just about Huff specifically.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
Right, Yes, I just need more dad jokes about Huff.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Okay, I like it.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
You can put that request into your because I listen.
I love to listen to the radio call. You learn
so much more about every team. But I also just
like your radio team.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
So it's well, I did see Bob with shoes in
here at one Jet's drive eating lunch. I could drop
in a little huff and puff, you know, see what
he says.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
I didn't want to call him by his first name,
and I get, you know, I kind of get stage
fright saying with shoes in because I was like.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Like that one makes me a little nervous.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
So I'm not on a first name basis, Bob, give
me some dad jokes there we go.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Also, if you said, Bob, give me some dad jokes,
that could just be like a copy paste to all
dads out there, and like someone's name's got to be Bob.
That's hilarious. And with shoes on paper is a little
scary because you're like, I don't really know how to
say that, you know, but it's, you know, shoes or
big game Bob, Bobby shoes, that's what That's what No
(13:54):
one calls them, but that's what I just called them,
Bobby shoes. I have one question for you before we
hear from Robert Sala and it's in regard to the
Jets offense. Everyone, I would say, has documented the statistical
and sack or ill advised sack taking issues of Zach Wilson,
especially last game. So it's a two part question for you,
(14:16):
and it's kind of complex. One is how much of it,
in your opinion, actually falls on the shoulders of the
quarterback versus you know, the entire operation, which is where
Robert Sola lies. And two, how do you fix it
in the short term before really finding a solution when
health comes into play.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
Let me let me be clear, Robert Sala is being
very kind. I mean, look like I'm not I like
Zach Wilson. I'm not antie him, but he needs to
not like it's just like I need to do better
things better in my job. Like but Robert sala taking
taking a responsibility is what a coach is supposed to do.
Like if he didn't, then it'd be weird, you know.
So I think at the same time, it's you know,
(14:58):
it's a growth point. It's hard because when you're I
give Zack Wilson a lot of mental fortitude credit. He's
been in a weird situation, you know, he it was
a tough start, and then he took a step back.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Then he was asked to step.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Up after I mean, was there anything more exciting than
the beginning of this Jet season?
Speaker 2 (15:16):
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
And then, you know, after four plays you're asked to
take over in this situation where one of the absolute
best of all time.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Was like, it's just a tough situation.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
So if the you know, if learning how to not
take Zach's as the next step in his development, then
that's just the next step in his development. It doesn't
have to be like, oh nah, bet, it's not bad.
Like we all have things that are the next step
in our development. So you know, it's I guess, I
guess that. To me, it's like it's not the end
of the world. And I appreciate that the coaches trying
to take responsibility for it, because that's what coaches do.
(15:48):
But at the same time, it's like, yeah, that's one
of the things that if you were to give an
honest assessment about where Zach Wilson is right now, you'd
say he probably needs to do a better job of
having that mental clock in his head that says, ah,
just get rid of it, or you know, this isn't
going to work, or you know, I'm going to tell him.
I'm going to tell Aaron Rodgers over there that this
is what I'm seeing, so Aaron can actually tell me
then maybe look for this or whatever it is.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Right, It's just that's the next step in his development.
That's where he's at.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Absolutely, And speaking of the afore mentioned Robert Sala, here's
Robert Sala with EA.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
What can you say about your defense at day eight games?
Speaker 5 (16:25):
But what we expected. You know, it's a good group, man.
They play the right way. They play hard, they play physical,
they play for one another, they communicate well, they play fast,
you know, it's it's not always perfect, but they correct
things on the fly. It's a fun group.
Speaker 6 (16:42):
Coach.
Speaker 4 (16:42):
How about the last two weeks, you guys have given
up a combined ninety eight passing yards. That's the best
mark for this franchise since nineteen sixty seven.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
Yeah, it's again testament to those best testament to coaching staff.
The players, like I said, we're all in it together,
and you know, it's you know, testament.
Speaker 6 (17:03):
To the front four. And they make it hard on
the quarterback.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
They make it hard on coordinators to be able to
take take shots on our defense. And credit to the
players in the back end. They're so clean with how
they operate and you know, but it's a cool stat
and you hope we can keep building on it.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
Justin Herbert, one hundred and thirty six gross passing yours
against you guys. That's a career worst number for him.
So we talk about a different quarterback each week. You
go back to week one, it was Josh Allen, Week four,
Patrick Mahomes, Jalen.
Speaker 6 (17:36):
Hurts in week six.
Speaker 4 (17:38):
Now, Herbert, you guys continue to excel against elite passers.
What's been the common denominator?
Speaker 5 (17:44):
You know, it's Russian coverage, you know. You know, we
live in this age of football of you know, with
our philosophy and rushing forward. You know, I've always argued,
if the quarterback is the most important position on the
football field, I argue the pass rushers next, because he's
the only position, that's the only position that can that
can take the head off the snake without having to
(18:07):
do anything cute on the from a from a defensive
smat from a schmatic standpoint. And you know, so when
you combine elite coverage with elite rush and you get
special results, and those front four hunt the back end
is very very deliberate and making sure that there's nothing
uncovered in terms of just busted. Like very rarely. I
(18:29):
know we had a couple early in the season which
was which was a little bit shocking, but very rarely
do we have guys just running free in our defense.
And again testament to the coaches and the players in
the in the execution.
Speaker 4 (18:41):
I know, you guys lost to the Chargers three turnovers,
the special teams touchdown, But when you have a defense
like that, you feel like every Sunday, every Monday, every Thursday,
we got a chance if we play mistake, free ball,
no self afflicted wounds. We're gonna play with anybody.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
Yeah, you know, we opened the game of the three
and out. Offense came out with the three and out,
also on the punt, which obviously went back for a touchdown.
But you know, you look at that first quarter, it
was basically consecutive good drives from the defense. Offensively, on
its second drive, got the ball all the way to
(19:23):
the I believe it was a thirty five and we
had that fumble. Defense responded by forcing a punt off
the sudden change, which was awesome. And then the next
drive was right at midfield with a chance to convert
an easy third down that would have had us first
and ten right around the forty yard line. And so
offense was moving the ball. Defense was playing at a
high level. But at the end of the first quarter
(19:44):
it was fourteen nothing because we had two turnovers and
a pint returned four touchdown. With all that said, it
was a two score game and you still felt good.
Like just after the first quarter it was like, Okay,
I don't think the Chargers are going to do much.
You know, very well respected offense, but felt like we
were going to be all right on defense, and if
(20:06):
we could just get back to just chop away, just
keep chipping, keep swinging. And I felt like we gave
ourselves that opportunity. It was fourteen to six, We had
a chance in filgal range to make it fourteen nine.
Obviously we had a sack that knocked us out of it,
but even still it was still a two possession game
for most of that second half, and just couldn't put
(20:28):
the pieces together to get us to one score, to
put a little pressure on them.
Speaker 4 (20:34):
It's someone who's lived in this business, do you really
have to treat it essentially as seventeen one game seasons?
Because everybody's talking about you guys totally different here early
this week as opposed to the last couple of weeks
where you're on in three game WINNI stry.
Speaker 5 (20:51):
So that's the hard part. You know, we talk about
it sometimes, you know, like in baseball, you know, armageddon
is armageddon. The bliss is one day you go from
a loser to a winner, all in twenty four hours.
Could be in the same day if it was a
double header. Same thing with basketball and all the other
sports that have a lot of a lot of games.
But in football, you can have a ten game win
(21:15):
streak and as soon as you lose, it's.
Speaker 6 (21:16):
Oh my god, this guy's falling.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
And so there's a lot of panic, a lot of
finger pointing, and and it seems like we're in a
culture now more than ever in all aspects of life.
When something goes wrong, we look for people to blame,
and and it's never as simple as just one person.
It's it's collective. When you lose, it's a collective it's
a collective effort. And or if you fail, it's a
(21:40):
collective effort. And you know, so, you know that's the like,
that's that's the rollercoaster we live in, you know. But
like I always tell my wife, you know, we are
very fortunate that on game day we get to experience
every emotion the body has to offer the human the
human body has the offer, and he experienced all of
(22:02):
the trust me when loser draw and you know, so
it's it's frustrating, it's stressful.
Speaker 6 (22:08):
But are you still calling your lessons?
Speaker 4 (22:10):
You made it clear after this game that the offense
is problems, not one player. Everybody looks at the quarterback
because obviously the camera is on him, but it's the collective,
and when you really look at the film, that's what
you're saying.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
Yeah, obviously he's got to do a lot of things better.
He does, but so does every other position group, and
you just feel a group that's pressing, whether he's trying
to make a player or the receiver is trying to
make a play at the ball in their hands, or
the backstrends for everyone's trying to make the big play
happen when it's sometimes the player to make is the
play that's available, and you know, so it's a it
(22:49):
is collective in terms of executing being where you're supposed
to be, catching the ball when you need to, get
vertical when you need to when the ball's in your hands,
and now just across the board, it's not going.
Speaker 4 (23:01):
To John Franklin Myers. Do we talk about him enough
in what he means to your defense? He had three
quarterback pressures against the Chargers and also three pds. I
think he's a second player in the National Football League
three quarterback hits, I should say in three pds, second
player in the National Football League this season.
Speaker 6 (23:19):
Do that.
Speaker 5 (23:20):
Yeah, he's he's kind of you know, our first year
he was like our belcow right, and then obviously everyone's
gotten better, so I feel like he's kind of gotten
lost in the in celebration. But he's still doing the
same things he's done. And he's very disruptive, very disruptive.
He's he is an animal in the rung game, really
good in the past game in terms of rushing the quarterback.
(23:41):
And and he has grown so much from the time
we walked in this building, and his maturity level and
the way he attacks his body and practice habits and
all that stuff. The way he that's for how he's
come along has been awesome. I mean, obviously for us,
but even for him. Just the watch him become the
man he's become has been pretty cool. And you know,
(24:04):
so I'm proud of that man. He's he's a tremendous
young man and has earned and deserved.
Speaker 6 (24:09):
Everything that he gets.
Speaker 4 (24:10):
Can you talk about the development of your first round
pick Will McDonald and he picks up his first sec
in the National Football League?
Speaker 6 (24:17):
Did he get one?
Speaker 4 (24:17):
Yeah, he got a half sack.
Speaker 5 (24:20):
No, he's good, man, he's good. Like I said, he's
you know, I argue that he's fortunate, you know, to
be a part of this defensive line group. Where he
can take his time to develop without the pressure that
comes with being a first round pick. We got a
really good group and he's going to be a fixture here,
very similar to Jermaine Johnson a yar Ago where it's
(24:40):
this kind of hot, not necessarily hiding, but he was
able to develop and kind of find his niche without
the pressures of expectations, if you will, and I think
he's working on that same track. He's got ridiculous athleticism.
He had a couple of pass rushes yesterday that didn't
show up on the stat sheet, but we're freaking elite.
And it's as he develops into more of a man
(25:03):
in terms of just just like Jermaine did, he put
on a whole different type of muscle uh this offseason.
When Will does that and he adds power to his
game along with his length and speed, it's gonna be
it's gonna be hard or hard to handle.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
On the opposite side of the ball. I know you
want to continue any long off that's a line. But
how did Joe Tipman perform in his first NFL start
at center? Of course, he get drafted out of Wisconsin.
He played most of his college snaps at center, but
he started for you at guard early in the season.
Speaker 5 (25:32):
Yeah, he's uh, he's he's got tremendous versatility. Again, a
lot of credit for Joe de and his staff and
identifying that young man coming out of out of the draft.
And uh, he's got great versatility and he stands for
what we believe in. You know, he's got tremendous He
has a tremendous mindset to him. He strains, he plays
with great effort, he's got great feed and he's smart,
you know. And uh, usually those guys just work out
(25:54):
and uh. And so whether you put him at guard center,
you have confidence that you're in you're in good hands
with him on on the field.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
All right, let's talk about the challenge ahead with the Raiders.
They make the coaching change and they really seem to
respond in that victory over the Giants under Antonio Pierce.
Speaker 5 (26:10):
They played with a lot of juice and energy last
week versus Giants. You know, defensively, they're very, very good.
Max Crosby is one of the best, not only the
best players on their team, but he's probably one of
the better players in all football. Uh. He is relentless
in his pursuit to be to make every play on
the football field. He's incredible. And then offensively, I really
(26:31):
felt like they hit their strategy. They got two elite
football players and Jacobs and Davante, and you know they're
they're they're.
Speaker 6 (26:38):
A lot to handle.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
They got a lot of speed, uh around the perimeters.
So it's a tremendous challenge, the challenge that we're up for.
We know they're were going to get their best. We
know they're they're they're chomping at the bit and uh,
we gotta we gotta, we gotta be ready to play.
Speaker 4 (26:53):
What is Demante's superpower as.
Speaker 5 (26:55):
A receiver, He's He's a tremendous football player. He can
be beat you any which way. He can beat you
at smart so he can beat you at speed, he
can beat you with physicality. But he's got a tremendous
feel for football, for the game of football. He's got
a tremendous feel in his routes. He's got a tremendous
feel from one of the balls in the air and
how to in the air and how to go get
(27:17):
in and make play, make yards after the catch, and.
Speaker 6 (27:20):
You know it's it's very.
Speaker 5 (27:24):
Common for him to be wide open because of the
way he runs his routes and his feel for space.
Speaker 6 (27:31):
So he's his superpower is that he's a hell of
a football player.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
How about Sauce Gardner. Oftentimes quarterbacks are looking away from him.
He had an opportunity to get his hands on a
couple of balls against the Chargers, and it seems like, hey, listen,
if they're going to try him, you're going to have
a hard time getting in completion.
Speaker 5 (27:50):
Oh yeah, no. He second played the game tremendous coverage.
He had a couple of plays where he jumped a
couple of routes. Him and DJ are playing at such
a high level. They're they're they compliment each other very well,
and you know from and they're different where Sauce has
got all this height, length and speed and DJ just
plays with so much strain.
Speaker 6 (28:10):
And I mean they both do really but but.
Speaker 5 (28:12):
They both play really well together. They compliment each other
really well. But Sauce is you know, keep challenging them.
You know everyone on TV. Make sure you challenge them too.
He's got to get the ball and and I think
he's starting to figure it out little by little, and
you know when, but he's been so close a few
(28:34):
times this year, a lot closer than he was a
year ago. But so he's getting a lot better, believe
it or not. And it's just a matter of time
before he starts taking all those things home.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Unless then here you get after it all the time
in the way room. What can you say about Aaron Rodgers.
He's talking about hey, a few fortnights away, maybe you know,
as far as a return, just from his approach to
rehab aspect of everything.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
A lot of respect for it, because he could just
be taking his time if you wanted. But he's trying
so hard to get back, which I think speaks volumes
to his love and admiration for his teammates, but and
and him just loving the game of football and wanted
to be here. So I know he's grinding and working his.
Speaker 6 (29:17):
Tailoff, and.
Speaker 5 (29:20):
You know he's different in regard he is. He's relentless
in his pursuit to play football.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
So thanks coach, thank you.
Speaker 1 (29:31):

a week ten? What's happening?
Speaker 2 (30:08):
What's up?
Speaker 7 (30:09):
What's up?
Speaker 1 (30:09):
What did you think of? You were giving us looks
about the Brian Baldinger gum behind the ear thing earlier?
Speaker 7 (30:14):
What I just don't understand the point of that. There
is so much.
Speaker 8 (30:17):
Obviously, you wash your face, you wash your you take
showers before you go to work. But there's dirt everywhere
on your body as the day goes along, and you
elect to take a super sticky piece of gum and
stick it behind your ear and then put it back
in your mouth.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
Sure you gotta eat some dirt, little little little dirt
s good for you.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
Supposedly you eat spiders in your sleep like eighty year
Did you know.
Speaker 8 (30:39):
That that is that does that go along in the
same vein as gum stays in your stomach for seven years.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
I'm not just making that up, Cynthia. You've heard that before, right.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
I've heard that before. I don't think it's true, but
I've heard.
Speaker 7 (30:50):
I'd read some fact checking out with the game.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
We'll fact check it. Wikipedia the Mayo Clinic.
Speaker 7 (30:58):
Is that what it is in Rochester, Minnesota.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
Wait a minute, just so we're clear. The Internet is
always right.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Number one. It says that I'm older than I am.
Speaker 7 (31:06):
On the Internet.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
It also says my dad's I know, that's terrible.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
It's the Internet.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
It almost says my dad's mcgiver. And my dad loves
being thought of as mcguiver. He like tells all his
golf buddies. So I don't want whoever this magic Internet
person is, who has the year of my birth wrong,
like by several years.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Let me point out, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Talk to them. He talked to them, Cynthia.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
Internet, Cynthia, the Internet.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
This is what I have to say about the Internet,
and I wish you could see it. I'm closing my computer.
We're done for the day with the computer. The Internet
is off. For the Game Preview podcast for Ethan Greenberg.
But for John Plan, it'll stay on because we need
somebody to fact check us.
Speaker 7 (31:45):
Yeah, I'm gonna. I'm gonna keep rolling with the internet.
I'm in on the internet these days.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
Okay, So now that I put the computer away, by
the way, which is very like, it's very fulfilling. It's like,
you know, putting your phone away for an extended period
of time. You know, it just feels very nice. I'm
ready to go fired up, JP. What are we doing?
Speaker 8 (32:01):
For those who can't see, Ethan's very comfortable. Yeah, he's
got his legs crossed. He's ready to rock.
Speaker 1 (32:06):
Yeah are we? Uh? And I got monkeys on my socks. Yeah,
we're rocking and rolling. We gambling today.
Speaker 7 (32:11):
We're gambling today.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
We rolling dice.
Speaker 8 (32:14):
Working in the NFL, which all three of us do.
We don't sports gamble, right guys, No.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
No, we cannot. However, I do pay attention to my
gambling policy tests and quizzes and trainings as Cynthia does.
You can be in fantasy football leagues that have a
pot up to two hundred and fifty dollars, So we're
allowed to do fantasy football up to two fifty Okay, sorry,
just putting that out there.
Speaker 7 (32:37):
That's good to know.
Speaker 8 (32:38):
Well, but today I'm going to give you each a
fake one hundred dollars.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
Great congratulations.
Speaker 7 (32:42):
Here are one hundred dollars richer than you were ten
seconds ago.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
In monopoly money or money from the in game preview
podcast Money game preview podcast money.
Speaker 7 (32:52):
You're about one hundred dollars richer.
Speaker 8 (32:53):
And we're going to roll through a couple of matchups,
not actually against each other, but just two players on
the same team, and you're going to tell me which
player and how much money you would like to put
on them to make a bigger impact in some nice
primetime matchup.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Yeah, all right, So we're.
Speaker 8 (33:09):
Gonna I'm hoping for some disagreements because you guys agree
a lot on this podcast.
Speaker 7 (33:12):
So let's get let's just get right.
Speaker 8 (33:15):
So first I start with so the Raiders secondary of
this year has been a little bit revamped. They brought
in two guys, Marcus Peters and Marcus EPs. Marcus Peters
is a corner, Marcus Epps is a safety. They went
from last year one of the worst four secondaries in
the NFL in terms of yards to now in the
top eight up to this point this year. Marcus Peters
has been awesome. He's got thirty seven tackles, one pick.
(33:36):
He hit a seventy five yard pick six just two
weeks ago in Week eight against the Lions.
Speaker 7 (33:41):
He signed from the Ravens.
Speaker 8 (33:42):
And then there's Marcus Epps, who came over from the Eagles,
who have terrific secondary last year. He hasn't been quite
as good statistically forty tackles, one pass defense, but both
have had, reportedly from the Raiders side, huge impact via leadership,
via just mentality, both being veterans. So who are you
you putting your money on to cause more trouble for
the Jets on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
Well, here's the thing. I wish I had the Internet
because you know, I just shut it. So I need
you to look something up. The Raiders' injury report. I
don't believe has come out yet as we do this,
but I think Marcus Peters did not finish last week's game.
Speaker 8 (34:17):
He did not play the second half of the Giants game.
He has a knee injury, but they really didn't know
the severity.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
Okay, So under the umbrella that we assume both players
are healthy and both playing, I am placing my one
hundred bones on Marcus Peters because I think Marcus Peters
is a very cerebral player and he has a knack
for finding the football. You just said it, you got
to pick six. I think for to beat this Jets team,
(34:44):
you need to turn the ball over and you need
to force takeaways. Between the two of them, I think
Marcus Peters has a much longer track record of doing so,
which is why I am placing my money on Marcus Peters.
But I will say I've seen clips before where Marcus
Peters gets baited and he thinks he's getting a pick
and really his receiver is going scott free behind him.
(35:07):
So with that being said, all things considered, you're asking
me whom I placing my money on to be more
of an impact, I'm going with Marcus Peters.
Speaker 3 (35:16):
Well, I'll say I'm with you that Marcus Peters is
a gambler. He is like so vagacy, it's unreal. He's
either getting the pick and possibly a pick six or
he's getting so burnt for like eighty five yards. But
Marcus Epps, who I know, the stats aren't really as
like you know, glaringly awesome for him, But the impact,
especially given who's really the straw that starts a drink
(35:37):
on this offense, meaning Breese Hall. To stop Breese Hall.
You can't let him get those ten plus yard plays.
Speaker 1 (35:43):
You can't.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
And that's going to be.
Speaker 3 (35:45):
Probably on Like he'll be the guy that backs up
the guy when he gets through the first two levels
of the defense. So I actually think that Marcus Epps
as like, you gotta get you gotta get the run
game so that your one dimensional. So Zach Wilson's forced
to throw in awkward situations that aren't great for him,
and I think that Marcus Epps will be assigned to
that task.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
So well, I'm.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
With you that Marcus Peters could be the one who's
like flashier and that picks six. And I actually think
he's one of the best like celebrators in all of
the league. But he also can get so burnt. It's
he's so he's so Vegas. It's to it like it's perfect.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
Yeah, he's Vegas to a t. You want to disagree
with Plato? There you go, pal, That's yeah, that's.
Speaker 7 (36:25):
What I needed. I needed you guys on different teams,
just for once.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
Can I tell you a great Marcus Peters story before
we continue? So two thousand and seventeen Jets Chiefs final
score thirty eight thirty one at met Life Stadium. Alex
Smith was a quarterback for Kansas City Marcus Peters. At
the end of this game, like got flat, he threw
a referees flag for I guess he got flagged for something,
(36:49):
and like took his shoes and socks off and just
walked into the tunnel like, and everyone was like, I
guess he's just kind of leaving. And then he walked
back onto the field, no signs on, just standing there
and that's just been That image is forever burned into
my brain.
Speaker 7 (37:06):
Well, that's the kind of character we need.
Speaker 8 (37:07):
We need him throwing his socks in the stands this time,
but hopefully with a New York.
Speaker 7 (37:11):
Yeahs away from me. That's disgusting.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
You talk well, first of all, out here talking about
he's talking about behind he's talking about not putting gum
behind your ear and tossing game war and NFL socks
into the stands to hit some poor man or woman
or child, God forbid.
Speaker 7 (37:39):
Yeah, but I'm not putting the socks in my mouth.
Speaker 1 (37:41):
It could hit you in the face and then you
have to carry the socks to the car. Then you're
just carrying them. You need a lot of hand sanitizer
if you're gonna be carrying some game warn NFL socks. Yeah,
you know what the gum is. You just it's all contained.
I you know where it's been.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
I'm gonna tell you something funny.
Speaker 3 (38:00):
Who went to the Chargers game like last year and
they were auctioning off game worn pants by an offensive.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
Life No, no, no, that's so cross. Absolutely now you'd
have to pay me to take them home. Obviously, the
floor laughing.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
It was so funny. That is not okay, terrible idea.
Who whoever came up with that? No bonus, no Christmas bonus.
Speaker 7 (38:27):
Okay, now that we grossed out all the listeners, we can.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
Say, if you're still listening, kudos to you. You're a
real one.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
Congratulations.
Speaker 8 (38:34):
All right, our next matchup, the players will have all
of their socks, they will have all of their pants.
Speaker 7 (38:38):
They will be wearing them for this matchup.
Speaker 8 (38:39):
But we're gonna stay We're gonna stay on the Raiders side,
so it will be some some silver and black pants.
But so for this we're gonna go to the offensive side.
And obviously, when you think of the Raiders' offense, you
immediately think of Dvante Adams this year.
Speaker 7 (38:50):
Jacoby Myers has had a terrific year.
Speaker 8 (38:53):
I mean he has four hundred and forty two yards,
five touchdowns, He's tied for the team leading touchdowns with
Josh Jacob with five, and he is just been the
threat outside of DeVante Adams. So we're gonna pin him
against a Raiders tight end in Michael. It's Michael Mayer. Correct,
Michael Mayer, who was a thirty fifth overall select shot
on here Dame last year. He's sixty four two sixty five.
(39:13):
He has everything you'd want coming off the bus. He's
one of those come off the bus guys that you're
just a little bit afraid of. But his production hasn't
been super great. The Jets have had a little bit
of an issue with tight ends this year. They really
have had an issue defensively with anyone, but they've allowed
eight passing touchdowns this year. Five of the touchdowns have
been to tight ends. So who is going to have
a bigger matchup? Where are you putting your money? Mayor
(39:34):
or Myers?
Speaker 1 (39:35):
It's a good question. Excuse me, you're not boring me.
I'm just a little sleepy. You know, it's a Monday
night game. I'm still catching up. I actually think this
is one of your better situations that you've presented out
of all because it's interesting because DJ Reed and Sauce
Gardner are so good, but I think Jacoby Myers is
just better than Michael Mayer. But then, as I'm talking
(39:57):
about this out loud, I'm like, what's a quarterback's best friend?
The tight end? Quick passes tight end? Obviously DeVante Adams
is a quarterback's best friend. But all things considered, I
think because you can trust Jacoby Myers a little more,
I think I'm placing my money there, And because he's
(40:17):
played this Jets defense before last year in New England
and against US. I don't think he missed either of
the games. But Jacoby Myers has just more NFL experience.
So if you're asking me, like, who am I putting
my money on to have like a better stat line
at the end of the game, it's probably Meyers, just
because of the inexperience of Mayor.
Speaker 3 (40:38):
I'm with you, actually with you, but I'm going to
give you a point for Mayor because I do think
so last game, Jacoby Myers saw the end zone against
the Giants. If you look the first start that Aden
O'Connell had, I think he targeted DeVante Adams conservatively fifteen times.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
It might have been even more.
Speaker 3 (40:54):
Truly was it was almost twenty times, like something crazy
like that.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
So that means that they clearly have in the playbook.
Speaker 3 (41:01):
At least to me, the clues indicate that the playbook
is designed to throw to wide receivers. So I do
think Jacoby Myers, who has been very helpful to this
offense in general, has a good output. However, in this game,
I do think that they're going to watch the film
and remember what did Antonio Pierce play. He's a linebacker,
(41:21):
and so I think he's going to stay m I'm
not going to let this tight end beat you know,
I'm not going to let like our tight end is
going to have.
Speaker 7 (41:30):
The advantage here.
Speaker 2 (41:31):
I'm not going to let this set of linebackers beat
our ten end. Like. I think that this could be.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
The you know, Michael Mayer game in terms of who
scores the touchdown with those quick passes. So while I
think Jacoby Myers will have the bigger stat line, if
I had to say a really logical argument, it would
be that if you're going to pick someone new that
the Jets haven't seen before, that there's something that could
trick them and something that this coach is familiar with stopping.
I would say, you know, maybe consider the tight end.
Speaker 7 (41:58):
I love it.
Speaker 8 (41:58):
A little bit of friction between you two, It's fantastic
And just for just just for the record. Last season,
Myers obviously played the New York Jets twice while member
of the Patriots. He in the first game had nine
receptions for sixty yards and a touchdown. In the second
game had four receptions for fifty two yards and no scores.
If that changes your opinions at.
Speaker 1 (42:15):
All, No, it doesn't change my opinion.
Speaker 3 (42:18):
I mean, like, I think it's a really good route runner.
They have a lot of different plays designed for him.
So it's just I don't know. I could see either way,
but it's a great question. So I just took the
other one just because I wanted to get more data
in there.
Speaker 1 (42:30):
You know, a lot of respect it. I love it.
Speaker 4 (42:32):
All.
Speaker 8 (42:33):
Right, let's change gears to the New York Jets side.
Let's go with a Jets defensive matchup. We're gonna go
Tony Adams versus Jordan Whitehead, Sauce Gardner and dj Ree
get all the love I mean today we found out
what they were both top ten in pff grede so
far among corners, absolutely fantastic. Adams had that huge splash
play against the Eagles. We had the forty five yard
interception return Jordan Whitehead against the Eagles to set up
(42:56):
the game winning touchdown. White Head's been fantastic since year
three interceptions, a team high eight pass defenses, and before
the year salin Albrook said that he was putting himself
in position to make these plays, he just was not
making them yet. He was not coming away with the ball.
This season, he seems to be doing that with the
a pass defenses with the three interceptions. So in order
to limit DeVante Adams there, I saw this fantastic and
(43:18):
could probably do it alone, but these guys are certainly
going to help.
Speaker 7 (43:22):
Who would you put your.
Speaker 1 (43:23):
Money on, Uh, I'm going Jordan Whitehead because experience, He's
seen more receivers, he's seen more looks. Robert Salaz said,
like with Tony Adams being a full time starter, you're
gonna deal with the ups and downs of and the
bumpy road of being a first year starter in the NFL.
(43:43):
So to me, to me, this is I don't want
to say obvious, but I feel confident about putting my
money on Jordan Whitehead between the two of them, just
because DeVante is such a wily vet and he gets
open on the best of the best that if you
need someone to help you, I'm gonna I'm gonna put
my trust in somebody who's played more football in the NFL,
(44:05):
who's seen more football, and that is Jordan Whitehead.
Speaker 2 (44:09):
All right, So I'm with you.
Speaker 3 (44:11):
I like that, Except here's my contrary opinion to that,
Like Tony Adams to me, is used to these college
style quarterbacks and what is Aid O'Connell.
Speaker 2 (44:19):
Well, he was playing it pretty this time last year.
Speaker 3 (44:21):
So I'm looking at an O'Connell and I'm looking at
his ability to make mistakes too, and I think this
could be a game where Tony Adams has an up.
Why he's more used to the types of looks, those
quick passes. They don't play defense in college anymore. I'm
actually pretty convinced that most people. I also live in
southern California, so go watch USC. They don't play defense.
(44:42):
But the reality is is maybe that could help him.
And sometimes it's really good to not know just how
good the guy you're up against is. Like Jordan Whitehead
absolutely knows Devanta Adams, that guy is excellent. Like maybe
Tony Adams was like he's good, but I've never seen
him before, so I don't know. Like sometimes it's good
to like ignorance is bliss, right, So I just think,
(45:04):
given who the quarterback is, that this could actually be
advantage for a guy who has played more of those
types of quarterbacks more recently.
Speaker 2 (45:10):
If you want to take the opposite.
Speaker 1 (45:11):
Pinning again, Oh my god, I need a swig of
some little caffeine maybe look like a little candy or something.
Speaker 2 (45:19):
But Cynthia see that.
Speaker 3 (45:21):
People, there's like this weird TikTok thing where like La
this la guy came to New York and asked for
his bagel scooped out, and the New York people were
like really mad at him.
Speaker 1 (45:29):
Yeah, I've seen I've seen this unique.
Speaker 3 (45:32):
Did you get your Did you get your bagel scooped
out and you didn't get enough carbs?
Speaker 2 (45:36):
Is that what's going on?
Speaker 1 (45:37):
Maybe it could be I didn't have breakfast this morning,
so that could be a part of it.
Speaker 2 (45:42):
I need to have breakfast.
Speaker 1 (45:43):
I know, well, I was still full from dinner last
night and it was a big dinner. And then I
was like, you know what, I don't need the calories
in the morning. But I had a good lunch. You know,
it was a healthy lunch. Sparagus, salmon, little rice. That
was good.
Speaker 6 (45:58):
There.
Speaker 1 (45:58):
Okay, what I what I wanted to say before we
get to the last situation is what I loved about
your answer is that you digged usc. I don't know
if you know that John Polano is a fan of
the Trojans, that was really a fan of them.
Speaker 2 (46:13):
They don't play defense.
Speaker 7 (46:14):
Yeah, back in fact, Plano, no they don't.
Speaker 3 (46:17):
I'm not like saying like, I'm not saying something that
I don't like them.
Speaker 1 (46:20):
I love that you unknowingly were just or not knowing
Polano or assuming that you didn't know he was a
Trojans fan. You're just like, yeah, I can't stop a nosebleed.
I'm like, I love it.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
No they can't.
Speaker 3 (46:34):
I mean I would love to watch the practice and
see their offense, say their defense, that that offense is excellent.
Speaker 7 (46:41):
Yeah no, no, this is fun, guys, this is awesome.
Speaker 1 (46:44):
Fire up the last one. We got like two minutes left,
so fired up and we'll be short on her rand.
Speaker 8 (46:48):
All right, let's roll, Let's get off of football for
one moment. Ethan Greenberg will be hopping on a plane
and flying his beautiful face out to Las Vegas for
the Sunday night match.
Speaker 1 (47:01):
Upeah, I don't know where this is going through a
little nerve wracking.
Speaker 8 (47:04):
During his time off, he will not be doing anything
that the Sin city allows him to that he shouldn't
be doing because he is a fantastic member of the
New York Jets media Corps and just a fantastic team reporter.
Speaker 1 (47:16):
A team a rule of bider. Thank you, yes, thank you.
Speaker 8 (47:19):
But if he's taking his hundred fake dollars, which we'll
be real in this scenario, and going out to Vegas,
is he more likely to check out the Bolagio Fountain?
Come on, love the Bolagio Fountain, or maybe take a
spin on the high roller? Do you know what the
high roller is? High roller is a absolutely Oh go wait, Cynthia, do.
Speaker 2 (47:37):
You know isn't it like the roller coaster?
Speaker 7 (47:40):
Is not?
Speaker 8 (47:40):
It is a ferris wheel in Las Vegas. It's famous
ferris wheel.
Speaker 1 (47:45):
All right, I'm gonna let Cynthia answer first.
Speaker 3 (47:50):
I would imagine you probably go on the ferris wheel
so you can see things from like very high.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
This is a nice little view, you know. I Bajia
Fountain's kind of boring. Been there a lot.
Speaker 1 (48:00):
Look, while the fountain is very boring. I am terrified
of hikes, so so okay, so the fountain might have
to be the move for me unless someone pays my
ferris Wheel ticket and records me in the ferris wheel,
because I will be freaking out.
Speaker 7 (48:17):
I may have to take one. Caroline Hender shot up
on that. Yeah, let's get you up there.
Speaker 1 (48:21):
You'll probably kidnap me and.
Speaker 7 (48:24):
I love it. And you can also check out the
sphere too.
Speaker 1 (48:26):
