Speaker 1 (00:02):
Jordan and Jake.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
I go good, I'm excited, ready to go the momp stops.
Speaker 3 (00:07):
He throws at a crossfield. Guess who, George Gross. Here
are your Panther Hall of Honor members, Jordan Gross and
Jake Delome.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Jordan Jake Podcast. Jordan, you're Jake preseason week. Dude, we
got a game and you, if my memory serves me correctly,
you are going to do the TV broadcast. Is that correct?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
That is Jordan, and I'm extremely excited about it. I
get to work with my fellow partner in crime, Steve Smith,
and also my other fellow partner with a niche. So
I'm looking forward to a Jordan preseason. I think if
anyone's listened to us over the past so many years,
(00:58):
I love the preseason because that was my life.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
I was not the eighth overall pick. I'm like my
co host, you.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
See that like once an episode, I think you needed.
That's a message deliver. Let's move on, and you're fifty
years old, let's move on.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Well, listen, I had to fight, scratch and call, and
those six years were That's what it was, basically seven years,
my six years in New Orleans and my first year
in Carolina. So the pre season is near and dear
to my heart. And I understand some people look at
it as oh gosh, we just got to get through it.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
I don't look at it that way. Guys are fighting
to earn.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
A job, a very lucrative job, and they're also putting
auditions on tape for other teams. So I am so
pumped to be able to do the game this Friday
evening in Bank of America Stadium.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Well, I'm happy for you. And before we talk about
the Pithers or other random did bits, tell me your
schedule to recording this on Tuesday, Panthers practicing today tomorrow
or Panthers versus Brown's crossover practice blended practice. Are you
gonna be there in time for that? You got production meeting?
(02:09):
Give me the whole.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Deal production meeting. I would be on a call on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
I have a little something I cannot miss on Thursday,
so I won't i won't be able to attend the
joint practice, but I'll be able to watch the film
on it and things like that. So I feel very
confident there in my assessment, or somewhat assessment. But again, Jordan,
I think preseason it's so interesting and I'm anxious to
(02:36):
find out is there any game planning involved, because if
you go back to the Stone Ages when we played
in the preseason, the first game, there was not any
game planning whatsoever. I think the morning before, oh, guys,
they run a four to three and you would line
up and these might be the guys who are playing against,
(02:57):
and that was it. The second game, you remember, we
had a little bit more like a very light detail,
and then the third preseason game would actually get a
very a little game plan, very fanilla generic. But yeah,
that's kind of how it is, and I'm not sure
how they do it nowadays. So I'm anxious to get
on the call to find out from coach Canalis exactly
(03:20):
what work is being put in.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
I don't get me wrong.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
You have to joint practices leading up to it, but
who's gonna play and how much we'll play with guys
will sit out.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
So yeah, we'll see how that all plays out.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Well. As I look at the training camp schedule that
the Panthers pass out to US insiders, you got an
hour and a half practice on Wednesday with the Browns.
That's what's scheduled to just it's see and then and
then Thursday, everybody's separate again. It seems like a lot
of travel, a lot of hotel, a lot of time
(03:52):
for that crossover time being an hour and a half, Jake,
So if you're Coach Canalis, if you're the Browns, you
got an hour and a half to cross. What's the
talk to the listeners about what the benefit is Jake
of doing these blendid practices.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Listen, I think the benefit is one you're seeing someone
else because, like listen, j C. Horn, He's knowing some
of the checks and calls. Bryce is knowing some of
these checks and calls. Austin Corbett and Big Hunt, d
Lou and Ikey and Taylor, they're knowing some of the
D line stunts and games.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
And then you have.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Rose Boom and Derek Brown and you know all the
new guys Turk Wharton and Bobby Brown and Pat Jones.
Like you get used to doing, you get so used
to doing, going against each other and knowing the calls.
But this is something totally different. They're gonna be lined
up different, You're gonna have different body types, different speed.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Those are the things that you look forward to. You
give the personnel.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
So like I'm assuming on offense, we'll give the Browns
twenty one personnel, which is regular personnel, fullback, running back,
tied into our receivers.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
And down a distance and you go from there. I mean,
that's what it entails. That's what it's all about.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
And I think another thing, because we're gonna have a
joint practice with Houston again next week, you would assume
we're gonna be working on let's just say first second
down and maybe a little bit of red zone against
Cleveland maybe next week, or do a heavy emphasis red zone,
some short yardage goal line stuff. So I'm assuming the
coaches and leading up to this, they have to discuss
(05:32):
what areas of need that they want to participate in
and do. So that's kind of the offensive defensive perspective.
And I know for you, if you would have done this,
you would have probably cut cartwheels because you would not
have to block Julius Peppers and the other team would
be practicing against would not have a Julius Peppers, so
that would be like an off day for you.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Well, I always hated these preseason games with no preparation,
no game planning. As you said, I on a typical
in season game. You study as an offensive lineman, you
study the heck out of the guys you're gonna be
going against, particularly their pass rush. You know their philosophy,
the pass rush technique, any indicators of anything, and going
(06:14):
out there just blank, not having any time to assess
what these guys, what their rush moves are like. I hated.
I remember very vividly we played the Giants one year, Hey,
preseason game one. I went against Jason Pierre Paul. He
was young. I'd never gone against him, I had no
And it wasn't like I gave up ten sacks or
(06:35):
something like that, Jake, But I could not wait for
that game to get over fast enough. The whole the preseason,
the whole preseason thing where we're live, you're actually hitting
the quarterbacks, you're actually hitting the running backs, but we
don't prepare with a game plan. It just seems so
foreign to me that in the NFL that type of
situation exists, you know what I mean, Like we're going
to roll out there with our with our starters at
(06:57):
times and risking, and so it shows me why the
trend has gone towards you're barely going to see any
starters play in these preseason games, maybe a series, because
the risk is not worth the reward that you're gonna
get from these times. So back to your point, these
joint practices are beautiful because you are going to get
(07:18):
your starters versus starters in that you're gonna have a
quick whistle they're not going to tackle to the ground,
and the coaches can get a little bit more experience
and live ish looks out of your starters without having
that risk.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Jake.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
So there's a lot of Jake Deloans out there on
the Panthers and other teams that are undrafted guys, late
round guys, you know, maybe one last opportunity. They're going
to get a lot of a lot of reps. And
so for you and Steve, I know you're gonna have
a fun time. It might be hard at times to
stay on task, but you got to get deep in
the rosters man to be able to call an NFL
(07:52):
preseason game. So are you doing your homework?
Speaker 2 (07:54):
I have, Jordan, I've been doing more, honestly, more so
the Panthers leading up to the right because we're doing
the Panthers broadcast.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
And yes, I'm going to study Cleveland's roster as we.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
Get closer, but I'm more I'm more worried about or
more concerned with the Panthers right and I want to
I want to look at some of our young guys.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
I want to see like Lathan Ransom.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
I want to watch him the safety out of Ohio State,
and I want to watch him play special teams and
I watched I want to watch him run around and
things like that. Those are the things that I want
to really focus in.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
On it and tied in wise same thing.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
We all know that, you know, Tommy trumbles out to
Tavion's having a phenomenal camp, but I want to see
Mitchell Evans out there. I want I want to see
a ten the running back, little things like that.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Those are the ones I want to see. Another guy
who's kind of.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Been the talk of camp and even the off season
is Corey Thornton, the undrafted rookie free agent I believe
out of Louisville.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
You know, he's one that I want to watch.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
He's got linked and things of that nature, and he's
kind of been that surprise. And that's what preseason is
a out It's who's these guys that for whatever reason
got overlooked and now they're shining and everything's great right.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Now, Jordan, Right, because it's not under the lights.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
When the lights come on, there's always that player or
two that might just look average, but for some reason,
when the lights come on, the game slows down and
this guy can just play and they don't get the
big white eye, so to speak, like the deer in
the headlights.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
So it just it remains to be seen.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Who decides or who can turn it on and off
when the lights come on.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
Well, the Panthers officially break camp Wednesday. After that joint practice,
the schedule goes into more of a game like schedule,
so there should be a plenty of excitement for everybody
getting ready for this first preseason game. I'm looking forward
to tuning in and listening to do your thing. Let's
rewind a little bit though, and talk about FanFest that
was on Saturday. It's just a long standing tradition. You know,
(09:57):
back when we were playing, even our first year together,
we still had fan Fest. You'd come back from Wafford
from training camp down there in Spartanburg do it on
the Saturday. They moved it to the evening, which I
think is awesome a number of years ago. Now they've
had the giant fireworks show. It just made it an
outstanding event. Everybody was looking forward to it this year
with practices being closed due to all the construction going
(10:20):
around bak of America Stadium, So it was the first
time for a lot of fans to see, you know,
what the twenty twenty five team looks like. And you know,
the Panthers put out that over forty five thousand fans
showed up. League Yette got in the end zone and
was riding his horse celebration, which I know he was
happy about with not getting in the end zone the
second half of the season last year. But Jake just
(10:43):
you know, watching watching through the social media stuff, reading online,
recapping fan Fest. What'd you take away from that?
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Well, one, I think it's a great opportunity for the
fans to be able to come see come watch the players.
And you know, some of these fans, maybe many of them,
they don't have the opportunity to be able to come
to the games or purchase season tickets, and so they
were able to come to fan Fest and get close
up and I know the player signed autographs and that's
always special. Jordan, It really truly is. It's always special
(11:14):
and you can feel the excitement and Geored watching some
of the highlights and George watching it on film, and
you talked about Leaguett scoring and riding dollar Bill, and I'm.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Telling you, I laughed. I barely laughed watching Austin Corbin.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
I don't know if he's riding dollar Bill or if
the Clydesdale he was trying to get on, but Austin
Corbett was kind of doing it. Also, watching Big.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Hunt and t Mac.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
I just things like that.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
It's you're getting excited for the season, right, You're just
getting excited.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
And the operation.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
I know, we had a fake punt and Jimmy Horn
did a great job to be able to knock him
out of bounds at the two yard line. And just
the little things who made plays, who showed up, who
conducted the offense.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
I mean, that's what this is what it's about.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
You're building, right, You're just building to get ready for
opening game.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
You talked about the riding the horse and Austin Corbett.
That's every time someone would celebrate a touchdown, Jake, I
never ever ever felt like I was included in that situation.
I would always every time. I always just ran over
and kind of did like the big lineman hug thing
and the patent on the head. There was never anything cool.
(12:26):
I do have to tell you a story though. Riley
Fields long time panther. What would you say his title is, Jake,
I'd have to look it up. Community has the best
sport code in the world, A panther teal panther sport
code he would wear. We'd go visit schools and community events.
And Riley is just all time attitude guy. Everything Riley
(12:48):
touch turned to gold and I think the world of him.
Except this one time, Jake, I gotta tell you the story.
You're trying to get the fan. There's a push like
how can we get the fans more involved and make
the game day experience better? Right? And so Riley came
to me with an idea. One day, I'm sitting in
the lunch room and every time Riley approached me, I
was like, all right, this is gonna be awesome. He's
eating and ask me to go. We're gonna go, you know,
(13:10):
do a soup kitchen. We're gonna go, you know, take
homeless dogs for a walk. We're gonna go redo a
school whatever I'm in. He comes up to me. He's like, Jordan,
we got a fantastic idea. I'm like, all right, shoot,
let me hear it. We want you when the Panthers
score a touchdown, we want you to run to the
center of the end zone, point like, hold out your
(13:31):
arm and point like from the left side all the
way to the right side of the fans in the
end zone, and then you're gonna nod your head and
then you're gonna shoot up the touchdown side. And we
think that this will become a tradition that will just
be an outstanding fan experience. And I sit there, I
was eating my lunch and I'm like, is this a
real idea that he really he really wants me. You
(13:54):
want me to come unto the end zone every time
we score and do this celebration. And he was hot
on it, man, he thought was the greatest idea. And
I shot it down right there. I'm like, Riley, there's
no way I'm doing that. Man, I got too many
other things thinking about. I gotta go do pat field goal.
You're gonna have to find another guy. So Jake I
may have altered the course of Panther history right now,
right now, we could have like a guy like Robert Hunt,
(14:17):
he'd be phenomenal at that. I just wasn't the guy
for that.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Jake, Yeah, you know, Jordan, the whole celebration deal, I
think some I know for me, you know, I was
just more excited that we scored, you know, and no
telling some of the things.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
You know what We're gonna have to ask Riley.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
I wonder if he came up with with any other
idea for anybody else that we don't know.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Well, I mean that was before the drum. Before I mean,
keep pounding was the thing. But the drum came out.
Maybe they replaced Jordan gross touchdown celebration with the drum,
which I would say is a major upgrade. Also, I
was always I'm really glad you guys would have made
fun of me. It would have been so being on
pat though. Is an ultimate buzzkill for a touchdown celebration.
(14:58):
Is you skill? Got you threw I'm a quarterback. I
threw a nice little dime on a you know, on
a whatever, on a smash concept for a touchdown you
run over there, the crowd's going nuts. Hey, let's celebrate.
We did it. And then you come off the field
and you're a dang hero and everybody's out of boid.
And then we got a line up for field goal.
It's the big guys. So by the time we get
(15:19):
off the fields, everybody's less excited about the touchdown. You know,
just part of the random tangent. But just so you
know how it feels when you're one of us. Okay,
I get it.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Listen, I get it, and I'm totally totally understand it.
But you know, you hit it on the head.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
The Robert Hunt, just the energy he brings and the
youthful enthusiasm.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
You know, Taylor Mouten had the spike for the longest time.
You know, that's very good stuff.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
But Hunt, the way he moves or how big he is,
he's he's awesome to watch celebrating.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
I want to know it is nutrition plan. It is
because his energy level is sky high all the time. Like,
I can't believe how much energy that dude brings to
the table every single practice, anytime I ever see him
on film anywhere, He's bringing the juice.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Jake.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
It's awesome.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
He loves life and man, like I've always said, I've
been watching him play since he was a true freshman
at Well for the Raging Caguns, eighteen years old, and
he played with that youthful enthusiasm and he's kept it
up even after. You know, he's become a professional, he's
got paid, got rewarded handsomely, and but he's still still
(16:27):
that same same rob.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
I think that's why he's so beloved.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
No, it's fantastic, all right. Pivoting. We had the Hall
of Fame inductees, always loved talking him out it every year,
listening to the speeches. Jake a friend of mine. I
don't know, Jared Allen have you have you spent any
time with him at one point? Yeah? A great dude.
I just we we kind of always hit it off.
He was an Idaho State guys from California played Idaho State,
(16:53):
so there was like kind of like, you know, familiarity.
He's a little bit younger than me, but we started
playing against each other he was in the Chiefs, and
then obviously through his time in the Vikings. I don't
I can't remember if I played against him in the Bears.
But then when he came to Carolina wearing number sixty nine,
we got to get, you know, spend some time together
that season in fifteen, and we went out to dinner
(17:15):
number of times with our wives and just we've stayed
in touch over the years. Great dude. I loved his speech,
just uniquely himself talked about like one of the things
I loved is when he said the best thing that
ever happened in his career is getting an email from Jackie.
Youngblood said that jack told him that he thinks he
plays the position in the right way, so wearing the
(17:35):
cowboy hat just really cool for him. I got a
helmet one year at the Pro Bowl. We exchanged game
war and helmets, so I got a game warn helmet
from his I think it was his twenty thirteen season.
So pretty dann cool these last few years with Pep
and Jared this year and you know, hopefully soon more
friends getting inducted. Just time flies, Jake, But pretty proud
(17:58):
to be associated with some of these guys.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Yeah, you know, Unfortunately I wasn't doing the radio back then,
but certainly followed that Panther team and did not get
to know Jared. But I remember, you know, you were
telling me that like he was, just like, man, he's awesome, Jake, you.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
Would have loved him.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
I mean, he just fit in with that locker room,
that big personality. But I vividly remember you talking about
him to me and yeah, I'm very excited.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Heck of a player. You know, he's a Hall of
Famer man. Tip your hat.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
So now we got to talk about our panthers. So
Luke was a finalist this year, Steve was a finalist.
Neither one of them made it in. I mean, I
gotta think.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
I don't know what.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
I don't know what to do. I mean, I feel
like we I hope that Luke gets pushed down further
and Steve gets in. That's my hope because if Luke
jumps him, then that just pushes You know, how many
years in a row they going to induct a feature
guy from an organization, which would be Pep and Luke
and Steve. How do you think this whole thing plays out?
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Yeah, Jore, I'm gonna be very honest. I think you
have one no brainer Drew Brees. I don't think there'll
be much discussion. I think he's a slam dunk. And
then Larry Fitzgerald's gonna come in there, and that's gonna
be another cog at the wide receiver, you know, with
Tory Holt and you know, and Reggie Wayne and they're
Steve and then now here comes Fitzgerald. So I don't
(19:21):
know they're gonna kind of cannibalize each other, so to speak.
Feel pretty good about Luke's chances going in. Felt pretty
good last year, to be very honest, pretty surprised Luke
didn't get in, and I think many people were, so yeah,
we'll see.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
I would love for both of them to get in.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
I think they both will at the same time, not
so sure. I don't understand sometimes the process that it
seems like they have to go through, but you know,
we'll see how it plays out. But I feel good.
I think Luke's got a strong chance.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
Yeah, I sure do. I mean that there's not really
a question with Luke, correct like, there's no way that
doesn't get in. It was funny I talked to him
this year after the announcements for me, and he's like,
I'm actually kind of glad I didn't get in because
I had some trips played around that time and it
really messed up my schedule. True, Luke Fash you hear
other guys, I've been waiting for years and you know, honest,
(20:16):
some some guys that aren't in are outwardly bitter about it.
And Luke said, I just would have messed up my
plans in August. So but but Steve, I mean Steve
gets in at some point, correct, Jake. Is that a
concern at all? Sure? Not.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
I've gone on my grants on here. I just yeah,
he gets in, but he should have been in. I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
I just no disrespect to maybe some other guys that
are in and whatnot.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
That's awesome, but yeah, I just.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
That.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
Yeah, you're gonna get my blood pressure. You gotta get
my blood pressure.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
You know, you get your hair all messed up. Hey,
you'd have fun this week going to watch the game,
call the game, good luck. Tell Steven the niche d
l everybody, Matt, tell them. I said, hello, and Jake,
looking forward to hearing you do your thing. Let's talk
next week. We got another preseason game. Who is it?
The Texans?
Speaker 3 (21:10):
Right?
Speaker 1 (21:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (21:11):
The Texans you're all my mother. Yeah, and they're gonna
come down to Houston.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
I'm in scrimmage against them, and it's gonna be a
little warm, so they're gonna get a taste of you know,
some true humidity and heat to get them ready.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
For the season.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
And Texans really good football team, a lot of talent
on that football team.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
Let's not get ahead to though. Browns first sounds good,
all right, Jake se Man, that's your nice
