Speaker 1 (00:02):
Jordan and Jake. I go good, I'm ignited, ready to go.
The bump stops. He throws at a crossfield.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Guess who, George Gross.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Here are your Panther Hall of Honor members, Jordan Gross
and Jake Delome.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Jake, if you would, I'd like to share something with
you to start off this podcast that has nothing to
do with football. Can is that? Okay?
Speaker 1 (00:28):
I am open ears, So.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I want to get a little vulnerable and tell you
something that happened to me and I'd just like to
share it with you. So, and it's something that happens
to a lot of men our age, okay, And I'm
just gonna I'm gonna put it out there for others
to hear that it's okay. So last night, I'm getting ready,
I'm in bed, I'm getting ready to fall asleep. You know,
everything's normal and fatigued and tired from all the football
(00:56):
practices and everything that's happened. Just as I'm about to
doze off, Jake, and this happens to a lot of men.
Massive left hamstring cramp that caused severe pain and outward
audible noises for me for a good ten to twelve minutes.
Jake it was brutal, and I just had to tell
(01:17):
you that.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Okay, I appreciate you telling me that, and that would
bring me back to Wafford College two a days roll
over and just cramp and you try to hydrate as
much as you can.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
But yes, that's what it brings me back to. So obviously, Jordan,
you're not hydrating enough.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
I'm not. And you know what, and when you're forty five,
then you just automatically think, oh, no, is this something
new that I'm going to have to deal with. But
I did do double practices. I go high school, then
I go right to my youth practice. So I'm on
the field from you know, four o'clock till eight point fifteen,
and it's hot and you know me well enough to
(01:59):
know I'm humping around. Man, I'm not just sitting there
doing nothing out there at practice. But buddy, I went
to roll over and that was the coup de gras
and that hammy locked up and it was I don't
know that I've rated my hamstring cramps over the years,
but this was a top five for sure. So I
just wanted to share that, Jakes, for you know, it's
(02:21):
middle aged guys that are going through a lot of
the changes.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
It's okay, it appreciated us.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
So while we're on your life, I love to hear
how week one went with the Grizzlies.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
All right, we go to Kimberly the Bulldogs, remember last
year in the playoffs, one point and overtime. Big deal.
Charter bus. We go, charter bus there, Jake rolling deep
as you know we would. So we get there. We're
going through pregame warmups. We see that their starting quarterback
(02:54):
has a cast on his right hand. Oh so that's
good news for us, right, yeah, big big deal. But
they're backup's a good player. We we I go first drive,
we say, or we go to we win the coin toss.
We want the ball, okay, take a shot, first play incomplete,
run the ball twice. We're looking at third and four
(03:17):
on our own twenty five yard line, or excuse me,
fourth and fourth on our own twenty four yard line.
What do you think I did?
Speaker 1 (03:24):
You went for it? Obviously I have riverboat Ron.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Okay, I'm a prodigy of that man, riverboat Ron. My
decordinators look at me like, what are you doing? Seventy
yard quarterback counter to the five yard line?
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Really, quarterback? Yep. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
And then there their their second string quarterback ended up
breaking his hand. Also in our game, it was pretty
physical game, so they ended up having to go wildcat
and all that. We end up winning forty nine to thirteen.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Nights Night. Well, good way to start the season, right.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
It was worth the hamstring cramp. I'll say you that much.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Love it love.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Well, I'm glad you're at real football. We haven't.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
We had a little taste of college football, and certainly
it is full goal this weekend with college football and
we're just the NFL.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
It's coming. It's creeping cut down day and you know
everything else, it's creeping here, Jordan is I can smell it.
It's coming.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Are you setting up your iPad and your phone and
everything and the TV getting ready for all this college
football that's about to hit. Yeah, I'm looking all weekend,
just all week and long.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
No, you know, listen, I'm excited.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
I'm looking forward to watching the big hype game, certainly
the Texas Ohio State game early on and then Jordan,
the raging Cajuns opened up at home against Rice.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
But there's big.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
News here, Okay.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Sixty two million dollars total stadium renovation took two years
and it's where we're happening. It's going to be happening
on Saturday evening and last yet and it's beautiful. It's fantastic.
It's updated, all the amenities, the brand new sweets club level,
it's uh.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
We have kept up with the times, buddy. So I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
You're talking the Delomee Stadium, right.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
No, it's not it.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah I thought it was.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
No, it's not.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
But but yeah, I'm looking forward to watching some games
and then heading out doing some tailgating because I miss
a lot of our games due to traveling in the
fall for the Panthers.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
But you know, I much prefer to go travel to
see my Panthers.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Yeah, man, well good, Yeah, there's a starts tomorrow night,
Boys to State South Florida. I know Houston plays Steven F. Austin,
which I have a connection to family here as a
kid playing. So yeah, it's an exciting time. Still ten
days out with the Panthers at least whatever it is.
Today's Wednesday. That's about ten days, isn't it? Maybe eleven?
But the big news Jake final rosters and we did
(05:58):
some shaking up today. We're recording this on Wednesday, Big Moves,
Big Moves.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Jordan, and you kind of just felt it coming along.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
I guess you could say flew to Charlotte last Thursday
for the last preseason game and the first I'm kind
of I guess heard about it or rumblings of oh
feeling to Minnesota and you know, didn't really kind of
dig and ask and probably could have asked. Dan Morgan,
Smitty and I and Aniche were able to kind of
have him for the third quarter of the game, which
(06:28):
was great.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
I by the way, pause what you're saying, that was fantastic.
Dude just loved it. Just loved it just because well
it's three of my teammates just hanging out.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
But yeah, I think I appreciate is.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Like Dan doesn't lie in mince words.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
I mean, one thing, you know, if you would tell
us something, hey, you know, like we're not going to
do this or that, But like what he says on
his pressers and with us, like he's not mincing words.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
It's it's the truth. And so that's what I think
maybe I enjoy most.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
But yeah, he didn't really hear anything at all, and
then you could just kind of feel momentum picking up,
and I guess Adam schefter last night, which would have
been Tuesday evening, something about working through some compensations.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
So it's like, oh, there's.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
Something going on, and so the trade happens today.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
And you know, as I look at it, Jordan, my
first reflection was, I think it's good for both teams.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
I think one, I'm happy for Adam.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
I think Adam came in and he kind of became
the face of the team the last two years. Yeah,
certainly Bryce is there, but this established veteran who just
embraced himself to the city of Charlotte, his family, everybody
loved him, and he was a guy that was tough,
had an edge to him. And then he gets to
go back home Minnesota has some receiver issues. He gets
to go back to where he's from, where he played college.
(07:48):
He was the darling of training camp whenever he was
an undrafted rookie and played on almost a decade in Minnesota.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
He gets to go back to help that team.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
But on our end, I look at it as it's
not the Christian McCaffrey deal, where you knew Christian still
had a good bit of his career left. I think
Adam's getting somewhat toward the end. Maybe it's one, two,
three years, whatever it may be. But we have young
receivers that we drafted high, that we've developed, and it's
time for them to shine.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
It's very simple, it's time for them to come forward.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
I think we feel good about Bryce in year three,
that there's a cohesive unit in the receiver group, and
we get a couple of draft picks, some salary gets
taken off.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
The books, and hopefully it's a win win for both franchises.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
I feel like one hundred percent think it's a win win,
And like you said, for feeling, his family's excited about it.
They had some stuff on social media celebrating, and I mean,
it's got to feel good for him. But Jake, we
got a fifth round and a fourth round pick, gave
away feeling, obviously, and then the Vikings get a conditional
seventh in next year, and then a conditional fifth and
(08:56):
twenty seven. But I mean, to your point, he's thirty five,
like there's only some many seasons left. I love the move.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Everybody loves Adam.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Though, I mean there's a loss for the person, but productivity,
I think that we can replace it, Jake.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Oh So and listen, that's why we drafted Ted McMillan,
That's why we drafted Zavie la Guett in the twenty
four draft. Jaylor Cochin, the fin cocher defined in the
in the Frieze of Jimmy Horn. You know, is there
is there a play for him at some point during
the season.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
A six round pick.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
David Moore is another one who he just he can
play gunner, he can play receiver, he can play returner.
And then this Bryson's remained, big, long kid who was
kind of the star of training camp, who you felt
pretty good about his chances making the roster when he
didn't even play against Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
I think a little banged up, but he didn't even play.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
So they just kind of liked everything they've seen with him.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
And yeah, you know, Hunter Renfro was a story. He's
not on the team right now.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
I'm not sure you think he's a practice squad guy,
you know, Jordan, I can't don't know, and I'd be
premature for me to.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Think or say anything.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
I'll you would hope. So I don't know, Jordan. I Uh,
I don't want to overspeak here, you know, I just don't.
That's where you're not sure. But you know, I think
he's one that said, hey, I only wanted to play
for Carolina. I'm from the Carolinas and everything else. I
think Charleston when he did the sideline interview during the
game with Carla the other night on the sideline. So yeah,
(10:23):
So hopefully he's one that can maybe be around because
we all know, Jordan, we people get hurt in this league.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Man.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah, well I think that it would make I mean,
I don't know the guy, but it would make sense
with him on ever come back, you know, I mean,
you know, for him to come back and join the
team this offseason. That would think about the family discussions
that went into that, like, well, Dad, you've been home,
we got our we've had a year of you here, Okay,
now what now you're going back?
Speaker 1 (10:52):
All right?
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Well okay it's the Panthers, Okay, we can make that work.
It seems to me that there's a if he's playing
the long game here, that there would be a lot
of reasons to stick around Carolina and not have to
learn a new scheme, not have to move again, all
of that stuff. But we'll see what opportunities come because
I know he's so well thought of in the league, Jake,
(11:13):
that he's gonna be pretty attractive for some other teams.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Yeah, Jordan, I don't think there's any doubt, And certainly
it sounded like early on in camp he was doing
some marvelous things.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Then he had a little setback.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
With what maybe a hamstring and was able to make
a few catches the other night in the game. So yeah,
I'm akeed to see how this all plays out. I
think the roster is still I still think it's pretty
fluid right now. I mean people are processing some of
the waiver claims because there's a pecking order.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
I think we're eighth. Last year we had.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
The first we were number one in the pecking order,
So we'll see how that plays out. Maybe there's some
free agents out there that we want to We want
to sign guys that are veterans in this league. So yeah,
it's going to be interesting to see how this all
plays out because it's.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
A pretty uh. I don't think final rosters are completely
set just yet.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Black Cheer did that surprise you all? Running backs? We
got Cuba obviously, Rico obviously at the end, But did
Black Cheer you just didn't know how special teams would
play out. You know, I didn't know.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Jordan he and he really played well the other night.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
I thought he really really.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Played well the other night in the UH in the
last preseason game and got banged up.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
And I'm trying to remember.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
I've seen so many transactions the last few days exactly.
You know, he we waived him, maybe with an injury
settlement or something like that, and so maybe he's one
that at some point we can able to get him
back because he might be out with the injury settlement.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
How long is he out for? And when that happens,
someone I.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Don't I don't believe you can sign him and then
we'll see what happens.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
And you know how this goes.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Jordan compared to a five man practice squad back in
the olden days when we played, now it's I believe
sixteen and you can kind of move up down the roster.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
So here you go. I'm going to talking about old
line because I love it. I'm going to say the
name of the names of the last names of the
guys that made the roster of Ikwanu, Lewis, Corbett, Hunt, Moten, Christiansen, Nyman,
Mays Zavalla, Jake, what stands out to you about that list?
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Same names with last year, same names.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
This never happens ever ever, especially in the freaking recent
history of the Carolina Panthers. Man, we've been like struggling
to get continuity on the old line. The same names. Jake,
it's incredible and like legitimate starter quality at depth and
holy cow, great job decision makers, because I love it.
(13:47):
Jake and Taylor Moten.
Speaker 4 (13:50):
Holy moly, Jake extension two year Jordan, who's got a
better than Taylor Moten? That guy steady as it comes.
He's a rock solid dude, strong technician. Ah sure, I'll play.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
For two more years. Oh my goodness, I love it.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Jordan.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
He's one that you know he shows up pretty much
every week. Yeah he missed what a game or two
last year, whatever it may be. But it's just he's there.
And I watched his presser the second week, third week
of camp, and you know, they asked him about, hey,
what if this is your last year, last camp, and
when he got emotional, it just goes to show you
(14:33):
you're at you're somewhere, what second round pick, You're there
for eight years and you see things starting to turn
and you're not sure, is this my last camp in Charlotte.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
This is what my family knows and everything.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
And I'm so excited, Jordan, because this is a pros
pro and one thing I'll never forget. Twenty nineteen, Hall
of on our weekend, we were at you know, the
hotel prior to doing something that that evening, and you
and Taylor were having a discussion and he was asking
you about keeping the eye on the defensive end but
(15:07):
having the ball in his vision to his and I'll
never forget you and him and you just you went
into full coach mode and you went to say, Hey,
this is what I would do, this is how my
stance would be, this is where I keep my head carriage,
you know, for everything. And he was looking at you
with the eyes of someone like, oh my gosh, this
(15:30):
is so helpful to me.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
And I don't know. That always stuck out.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
To me because he was one that he just he
was trying to get better and he wanted to get better.
And what perfect opportunity to have, you know, someone like
you and I'm not saying that to inflate your ego, but.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
Someone like you. Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
But I just that always struck me. It's like, Okay,
this guy, there's something there. I mean, he's a young guy.
He's going to sign a big contract, but he wants
to continue to get better and he's just been mister lib.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
For us, outstanding.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Just just pump for him and then like just to
get it. There's there's there's times in franchise history, not
just the Panthers but others and you're thinking, like what
are we doing here? Like can reasonable minds prevail? And
this is one of those moves. It's like, yes, we
want you to stick around. Okay, yes, I want to
be here. Let's just get this thing done. There was
not even like a whole lot of there was no
(16:24):
noise about it. Is it going to get done? You know,
just like hey, business as usual, let's handle this all right,
everybody's happy. Let's keep rolling, Jake, did you? I mean,
we can go through every position and that's kind of
not the nature of our podcast. But starting wise, it's
just you know, Ryan Fitzgerald ended up as our kicker,
you know, new long snapper and JJ Janssen, new guy
(16:46):
not very familiar you know obviously with the program, but
excited roster Jake, did you watch the first episode of
Panthers Blueprint Training Camp Edition?
Speaker 1 (16:56):
I did. I thought bits and pieces at a couple
of different times.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's so fun watching those guys practice.
I think maybe when they're miked up there's more trash talk,
but it seems to me like there's an exorbitant amount
of trash talk happening at practice, above and beyond the
standard amount. Is that just me because I'm old and
krusty man Jordan?
Speaker 3 (17:19):
There's a lot of trash talk when we played, you know, yeah,
certainly you had Julius who didn't say a word, and
you also been, like, you know, Steve would It wasn't
really a trash talk.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
I mean like we practiced hard against each other.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
You know, Mike Rucker might have been the greatest trash
talker with a cre que language, like.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
I mean, it was like it was me, you think
that's bad, that's bad stuff right there?
Speaker 3 (17:49):
Oh you know, I mean the greatest line ever was
just that's film study.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
I'll watched film. I know what you're doing. I mean
it was not he used to say that all the time.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
I'm still sticking whatever that means.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
Oh, you know, so you just go back to those times.
And I don't know, I just it brings back to
such great memories. Maybe it's because they just practiced once
a day too.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
There's extra high energy for practice.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
It could be if I was miked up.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
If I was miked up during training camp, there would
have been a solid thirty minutes of like self talk, Okay,
you feel good, everything's.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Fine, You're not gonna die. Let's go get it going.
Here we go, Here we go.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
There would have been a whole lot of here we goes. Definitely,
Oh well, yes, can we talk about the the Jacksonville
Jaguars or is that is it too early?
Speaker 1 (18:43):
We can start? You know what is what happened?
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Okay, here we go. Let's back up what happens the
rest of this week with the with the Panthers. You
know what I mean? Now you're you're in that meeting
room and now it's tiny, there's only fifty three guys
in there. There's practice. Then you bring in some uh
practice squad guys. But mindset wise, we're diving right into
the Jacksonville Jaguars. So the first time training camp has
(19:06):
been a lot about panther versus panther and a little
bit of upcoming opponent, just a tiny bit, but now
we're actually getting ready for a real football game, right.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
Jake, Yeah, Jordan, there has to be some peaking going
on at Jacksonville, and it's gonna be a ton of
I think the one positive thing for us is that
Lee and Cohen came from where Tampa, so we played
them twice last year.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
So now is it the same personnel.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
No, but you would like to think some of the
run game things that he likes to do, some of
the screen games, some of the movement packages and things
like that, you would like to think there will be
some carryover. They have Brian Thomas junior, big wide receiver,
you know, Mike Evans from Tampa, things like that where
you would assume there's some carryovers.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
So I would assume there has to be some peaking
going on.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
But you're still you're still establishing your team, right, and
we probably have one or two new guys, especially practice
squad guys, but you're still kind of it's not camp mode,
but like you're getting ready for the season.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Guys are getting their bodies right.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
And yeah, you'd like to think the conditioning aspect is
still ramping up because we have to travel to Jacksonville,
and it's going to be.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Warm whenever we do play, you know, brutal. I just
remember the first meeting after cuts and it was just
like no one was in the team meeting room. Yeah,
because you'd had ninety guys in there, you know, two
weeks before whatever the number is, I don't even know,
but just seat eerie. And then you look around the
old lineery, which was packed in training camp, you know,
three deep everywhere. Now you're like, geez, what happens if
(20:37):
a guy gets hurt? You know, there's nobody left. So
now excited for the team to get to Now get
ready for a game and go down there Jacksonville. Travis Hunter,
I mean, like, what a cool storyline. Just an excitable,
excited second pick overall rookie to go up against j C.
Horn and contest that and him against ours if he
plays corner to two against our receivers. Just some fun
(21:00):
to start the season off on a winnable game, I
would think, Jake, Yeah, you'd like to think you.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Give yourself, certainly a really good opportunity.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
It's a it's a team that you know, certainly they
didn't have a good year last year. I think for
on many fronts, it's a team that underachieved because there
was a lot of hype, especially with Trevor Lawrence and
signing that massive deal, and it was just one thing
after another, and it was a it was a rough
season for them. So brand new coaching staff, brand new
front office, they all came in.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
There's a lot of excitement. The Travis Hunter pick.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
They traded up a great amount, to be quite honest,
to move up from five to two.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
And so where's he gonna play. Is it going to
be more offenses?
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Is it going to be you know, less dec I
don't know that's and he hadn't played the last two
three season games due to upper body injury.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
So there's a lot of unknowns.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
But I think the biggest thing, Jordan, we need to
worry about ourselves. We need to just continue to practice.
I know, offensively, we want to establish that run game, right.
I think everybody knows that we have a workhorse at
running back, we have the old line back, some new receivers,
a quarterback of confidence throughout, you know, through the roof,
and so let's establish that run game.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Let's establish that. Let's not turn over the football and defensively. Yeah,
we're plotting out.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Some different large men on the defensive line than we
had last year. I mean it's very simple the last
two year. I mean, like Derrek Brown, I'll say it,
keep saying it. He's the number one free agent signing
