Speaker 1 (00:02):
The following.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
He is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Cowboys. This is Media Match, a roundtable of Cowboys insiders
trumping wisdom and offering sizzling takes on the current state
of your Dallas Cowboys. Now your host new he.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Scrugs, Media Mash Draft Day. Let's ride, Yes, sit up, Yes,
it's here, No more talking about it. It's Thursday, First
Round action, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
The Cowboys have the tenth overall pick for now tenth
t I mean twelve?
Speaker 1 (00:40):
You know?
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Sorry news?
Speaker 4 (00:43):
Oh no, no, sorry, OK.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
That's what happened. Russell Wilson, I love Russ for those things.
Third round pick, Yes, pretty good, third round.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Round pick out of Wisconsin slash NC state. A whole
pack of Badgers, as he would always say on his
Sunday night thinks John Jack Taylor, Ed Werder, got Nick Harris,
who's replacing Clearantill again?
Speaker 4 (01:05):
And I'm new he scratch?
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Is this short term a permanently tuder Chris Bean.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
We now have a panelist who is capable of putting
out a ranking of the top one hundred draft picks.
We've never had that before.
Speaker 5 (01:15):
Yes, yes, tell us more Nick, Yeah, I've been working
on this draft class for I feel like close to
six months, probably even more. I'm a college football nerd,
so and I covered recruiting in high school, so there's
a lot of these guys that I've been covering for
seven eight years. It feels like, so yeah, it's I
have a draft board up on my Twitter three hundred
and fifty plus players and then yeah, I also made
(01:36):
a top one hundred list that I put out on
Star Telegram yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Do you have a guy that you've covered since high school?
We're like, man, I really like this kid. I'm looking
forward to this day for him.
Speaker 5 (01:45):
Tenor Rolla McMillan. That's funny because I really been covering him.
He was a sophomore in high school at Anaheim Survite
and one of the freakiest athletes I've ever covered, too,
So that's that's probably like the one that jumps to mind.
And here in the first round, Shador was a guy
that we covered when he was at Trinity. Trinity Christian
Cedar Hill Quinn you weres have been covering him since
he was a freshman. There's a lot of guys in
(02:06):
this class. It's it's pretty fun.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
I know you worked in OC Say what in the
O C.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
Yeah, yeah, I worked worked many many different states, many.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
Different states in California.
Speaker 5 (02:16):
So I was covering Texas at the time, and Tenero
McMillan had Texas in his top three, so and they
had a quarterback commit that was out there, so I
would always make trips out to south of southern California.
He was one of them that I would check in
with every time. Probably saw him four or five times live,
and it's a it's an experience.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
You were on the that show, the on Bravo, the
Draft Nerds.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
Of the Draft Nerds, Yep, that was me.
Speaker 6 (02:40):
That was me.
Speaker 5 (02:41):
I was the one doing the little confessionals, you know
in the in the back room. It's like, yeah, Jock,
he sucks, man like. And then I got up to
Jock and be like, man, you're the best.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Yes, the truth comes out, man, all right.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
So so now I'm more curious because we just I
just finished doing the media I mean not meeting match
the this is the media match the players last and
I was getting holes shot in me by Barry Church
and Heck Maherrison about Ted McMillan.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Well, I didn't like him because he don't separate.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
He doesn't play hard all the time.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
The separation was church.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
I think that's a legitimate conversation only because one reason
des Brian faded quickly is Dak was like, you ain't
open enough. I'm not doing it to you. And so
maybe Dak is evolved over the years. Maybe Ted gets
more separation than Dez. But I think that's a legitimate question.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
I was talking to an offensive coordinator last night who
did not have very many positive things to say about McMillan,
and he did like Matthew Golden for the Cowboys for
a variety of reasons. But it made me go back
and look at if you look at the way Will
McLay and Brian Schottenheimer have described what they're looking for
(03:54):
in a player in terms of like they we want
world class competitors. We want guys who are passionate about football.
I mean, does that based on the conversations I've had,
that doesn't really fit McMillan, It does fit Golden. Are
those legitimate questions about McMillan.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
Yeah, I cover both of those guys, and McMillan, I
don't I know the video that came out what was
a couple of weeks ago from his freshman year where
he was like, yeah, I don't really watch film, I
just get out there. That has changed in his time
at Arizona. I think the separation concerns sure. I think
his athleticism is elite enough to be able to make
up for that his body control, his vertical ability. I mean,
(04:30):
this guy that was the number one volleyball player in
the country coming out of high school, and you see
that type of athleticism at the catch point. His catch
radius is wide six four two thirteen. The only concern
that I had, or not only concern, but I think
the major concern that I would have coming into the NFL.
He's had the same quarterbacks since he was in eighth grade,
and so I wonder how much that transition period will
(04:51):
be for him, you know, coming into the league and
having to get used to a different arm throwing him
the ball. But I think this is this is a
guy that'll be an All Pro in this league.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Here's a quarterback he's had for eight years better than
Dak Prescott.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Absolutely not well, he should be encouraged about that prospect.
It's more so a timing thing, you know, and being
locked in on a timing with a certain guy for
so long, especially at the receiver position, there might just
be some early, you know things he's gonna have to
work through as far as timing goes complaining with a
completely different quarterback.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
So I was watching an interview with Jetfish coach at
Washington now who was Arizona before with McMillan, and he said,
I remembered being in Jacksonville and we took the trip
out to A and M for the Johnny Manziel pro
day and watching Mike Evans.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
He says, I was in Jacksonville at the time as
that boy.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
He'd fit us, but we took Blake Bortles, he said,
but he just like, man, this guy is really good
and he taught you know, Ted McMillan reminded him a
lot of Mike Evans.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Now.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
He wasn't not when he first got here, but he's
developed into that kind of guy. And in my mind,
I'm saying to myself, Oh, if I could have a
Mike Evans type player next to Cede Lamb, give me that.
And we've all seen Brandon Aubrey walk out there for
too many kicks. Can you just throw the end zone
it homeboy, jump up again? He doesn't that alone right there?
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Dog?
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Going the last two years, where could the Cowboys have
been in some of these close football games if you can,
het man, just Joe jump and get.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
It now, that's that's really I mean, if we think
about how Dez played, and Dez was a you know,
red zone touchdown. You throw it up near me, I'll
go get it. Yeah, that's that's worth it. I could
get down with that.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
Yeah, red zone threat. I don't feel like they've had
that true possession red zone threat since Dez. They have
so many times last year they get inside the twenty
and you're like, oh god, what are they about to
do here? And like the only thing that worked for
them on a consistent basis during the McCarthy oc era
was that Brandon Cook's corner route out of the slot.
And then when Brandon Cooks got hurt, everyone looked around like,
all right, so who's gonna run that now? And nobody
could they need a possession?
Speaker 2 (06:45):
The Giants were the only team in the NFL worse
in the red zone than the Cowboys last year.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
Yeah, goodness, gracious, so I have put in it.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
That's if he's there I don't think he's gonna be
there personally, I don't think McMillan's gonna be there to welve.
But if he's there, isn't that skill worth a lot
to think about when you consider where your offense has
been the past few seasons?
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Is he is he gonna win fifty to fifty balls
against guys who don't play for New Mexico?
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Well, he gave Travis huntterda at work? When do you
play at college?
Speaker 5 (07:14):
Right?
Speaker 2 (07:14):
He got shut down by Travis Hunter. I think he
only had thirty eight yards in receiving against Travis Hunter.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
I will say this, okay, because if you're out here
scheming until further notice, I'm throwing two at ced LANMA.
So if this guy's got one on one coverage against
somebody's number two corner, I feel good about McMillan. That's
just me, just just my thoughts. But you covered him,
and you spend a lot more time covering this young man.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Than you like him or a guy like Golden who
has great speed and regularly creates separation and gets open.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
I like McMillan. I think the playmaking ability is going
to be more frequent with McMillan I think he can
run more of a routree. I think his hands are
sure Golden. I think Golden is a talented player, but
he's my fourth best receiver behind Abuka and Burden. I
think you agree the question there. Look, he can produce
in the short and intermediate game, and I want to
(08:10):
see that that speed show up in play speed because
there was a there was a clip in Arizona State
where he took a slant over the middle of the
field and if he had four to two seven speed,
he would have houst it. But he had some safety
that looked like me, you know, going and tracking him down.
It's like, where does that play speed translate onto the field?
And so I wonder how that'll play. Also, there's going
to be a little bit of a transition period. I
(08:31):
think if Matthew Golden were to come here, there's gonna
be a lot of trial and air, not only in
training camp, but early in the season. And I know
we're looking long term projection. If you're looking four years out,
it could look a lot different. He played seventy five
percent of his snaps lined up out wide. There's going
to be a lot of versatility and interchanging between him
and Ceede Lamb. There's similar type weapons. How does Schottenheimer
balance that? Not only do I think it would be
(08:53):
an easier task to just throw McMillan out wide, I
do think he would be able to open up CD
a lot more in the in the in between, the
slot and things like that.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Now, for me, I'm all about who's the better player, Like,
I understand the fit, but I.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
Don't understand that who's the better play mc millan For me?
Speaker 4 (09:07):
Yeah, So I.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Go back into what you talked about your Golden's not
you know your number two guy either, you speak to
your Buckeye a Mecca Abuka when they talked about at
the press conference, what they were looking for in terms
of you want competitors, you want people to have high character.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
It's that.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
Plus he's a terrific route runner. Now he's not going
to uh give you that many deep I mean, he's
not a deep ball, deep threat kind of guy, but
he runs such good routes. He can create separation great
those plays. Plus if you really want to run the
ball and get down like that, he blocks like hay
As what thanks?
Speaker 2 (09:43):
So Andy has a relationship with your receivers coach.
Speaker 5 (09:46):
He does Junior Adams, the receivers coach here. He recruited
him really hard when he was at the University of Washington.
Buka grew up only fifty miles away from the campus
and they had a really good relationship. But Buka actually
spoke to it at the combine. He said, that's a
guy that checked on me throughout my college career. We
have a strong relationship. And then Abuka's high school wide
receivers coach, Junior Adams also coached him at Eastern Washington
(10:08):
back in twenty nine to twenty thirteen. And then just
to add on to a Schottenheimer was in Seattle when
Obuka was in the area. But I kind of look
at like Buka as the compact slot that's starting to
get a lot of love around the NFL. You can
look at it Amen Ra or Jackson Smith and Jigba
and or even a Cooper Cup to a certain extent
and see the short to intermediate game and how a
compact slot really works in those type of instances, and
(10:29):
I think Obuka would be a really good fit in
that type of role. There would also be some trial
in air, I think in figuring out his role compared
to CDs, but I think it would open up a
lot more opportunities for CD out wide. I think CD
would need to get bigger, but it would really work
out for him.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
ED go back to when Jimmy was here, when Jimmy
drafted guys, he was fond of drafting people who play
at a high level and.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
Competed Mike Obuka.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
First off, Just trying to get on the field at
Ohio State ain't no easy task. Tell people all day long,
you know, Joe Burrow left there, all right, I mean
Queen Ewers left there. This kid thrived there and they've
been some really good receivers out of there. So when
I think about that program, what he's done, Yeah, and
just how Jimmy had so much success, Like, man, this
(11:12):
guy's doing it over here to the high programmer. But
take him what he high level he was doing here
and bring him over here.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Well, and he was doing it at Ohio State. I
think he left as the leading receiver in school history,
even though he never he led the team in receiving
right any individual season. And he's used to being a two.
That's what he's been in his whole career at Ohio State.
And that's great. Initially here that you know he recognizes
Cede Lamb status and fits in. Well, but what if
(11:38):
CED's hurt like he was last year? Can he elevate
and be the one?
Speaker 5 (11:42):
Yeah, to speak to Ed's point, he was a number
two behind Chris Olave, Jackson Smith and Jigba Jeremiah Smith,
Marvin Harrison Junior. Yet he's the program's all time leader
in reception. So you think about all the talented receivers
that have gone through. Ohiose stateg Jock could speak to
that for sure. I think pairing him with a clear
number one would be a really strong option for.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
And Will Howard, the quarterback won the National Championship with him,
spoke at the combine about you know that he sees
the game and understands the game like a quarterback.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Well, he's the one who called a duke ball to
Jerry Mini Smith in the championship game in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 5 (12:14):
That's awesome.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
I mean, I just I don't think McMillan will be there,
So I agree, But.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
I'm not taking Nick Buka at twelve. I slide back
go get him at eighteen, nineteen twenty two one.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
And so when Nick nick Heatman asked me, Hey, who
do you have the Cowboys taking?
Speaker 4 (12:31):
I went with a Meco Buka.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
I believe in a trade down, there's somebody's gonna want
to come up. People always right, there's always somebody who's
all of a sudden, my guy's dropping, My guy's dropping.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
What do I do?
Speaker 3 (12:44):
And Jerry will take your call? And at the press
conference he seemed like trader Jerry was back in.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
He's trader.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Driff got the hat on seventy two draft day trades
for Jerry, I'm back.
Speaker 5 (12:58):
You gotta call me though, correct, gotta call me. I
ain't calling nobody.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Right right, And that's what we wants.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Leverage.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
That's leverage the first person makes Kyle has loses leverage.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Yeah so so I I just anyway, I think it's
pretty pretty interesting here as we go to break. Let's
who is your favorite Dallas Cowboy draft pick that you
ever covered, that I ever covered covered?
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Oh that's easy. That's the Darren Woodson.
Speaker 4 (13:21):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Steve Walsh for all the turmoil that created after the
Cowboy the deadline number one overall.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Got to become good friends with Troy. Troy, I got
this thing.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
I haven't been here long, but Marvin Overshawan.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
You know what, man, I will.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
I enjoyed covering Troy, but I wasn't here when he
got drafted, but it was it was pretty cool to
cover DeMarcus where from knowing how Bill Parcell's argued with
Jerry about Dware and ye out of Troy and watching
his career all the way twenty one the Super Bowl
(14:02):
with Denver, I was there that day and got to talk.
I got to talk to Dwear and Wade after the
game on the field and to see him go in
the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
That was that was pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
I was being a little facetious with my Steve Walsh pick,
but yeah, I mean that was a great draft.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
I was here.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
Bill Parcells actually encouraged me to be here because they
had two first round picks and it was going to
be really an interesting draft. And then he got upset
at me when basically I asked him, I said, would
you sit down with me and have like a production
type meeting and you know, so I can have a
better understanding of you know what your strategy is going
to be. And I won't reveal anything that would damage
you obviously in advance of you making a pick. But
(14:40):
I would like to understand the whole thing, and he said,
absolutely not. You know, we can't jeopardize our picks and
our draft that way. And so I got it from
somebody else and I reported it and he got pissed
off to the point that he walks out and he goes,
who's telling you this? He says, And then he says,
I'm still going to do the live interview with you,
but you know you could have really heard us who
(15:00):
told you all this?
Speaker 4 (15:02):
He said, the tooth fair, They said, man, just give
me will McDonald treat.
Speaker 5 (15:07):
It's a great story.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
But I had met him at you know, Cowboys golf
Club randomly before the draft, and he was like, you
got to you got to be here. Where you going
to be for the draft? So well, either he were
San Diego because both teams have first two first round picks,
and he said we should be with us, and I said, well,
I the one way I know I could get ESPN
to assign me the Cowboys is if you'll agree to
do a live interview with me at some point in
the draft. And so he agreed to do it and
(15:29):
then got mad at me about, you know, his lack
of cooperation, leading me to find out from somebody else.
And then but but he promised me he was still
going to do it as mad as he was and
as much harm as I had potentially done, which was
obviously none because they wound up executing they're flying perfectly,
but as nervous as it made him, I'll still do
the interview.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
Which was you know, you go back that Sean Merriman
from Maryland was was also the heavy consideration there. And
then the reports that Parcels wanted to take spears and
they were like no they and he's mad, he's pouting again,
and like we get him at twenty. Then they did
it and yeah, so it's it's uh and covering where
his whole career was.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
And then because remember Sean Merriman came.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Out, he was a better player, more productive player. Initially
he was the.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
More productive player, was getting more sacks and where it's like, man,
you got me blocking, I don't just get to go
run at the quarterback. And then you know, Bill being
the Bill, I knew I should have taken.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
Him right, small school guy.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
Yeah, yeah, so so that was that was really fun
to watch. You're right, his his career and everything there.
So it was it was a heck of a pick
by the cowboys, and you hope that they can do
something similar and you know, draft another hall of fame
type guy. And hey, look they've been on a run
here the last fifteen years, or they've been able to
take some good guys here in this top fifteen uh
(16:51):
part of the draft and do some work here. All right,
it's got our first break in and we'll come back
with Dick ed Jack. I knew he this is a
media mashal dallaskyboys do.
Speaker 7 (16:58):

Media Mash Media mash right here on Dallas Cowboys dot
Com with your favorite media in times Got the carriage
edwarder a Jacques Taylor. I am new he Scruggs in
his Draft night and the Dallas Cowboys are sitting on
the clock at twelve and Jerry Jones talked on it
is pretty draft press conference about you know, working on
two things here is is Jerry just talking or do
(19:26):
we think Jerry's really working on two things.
Speaker 5 (19:28):
Let's start what you nick, I believe so because whenever
you look at this team and the needs that they have,
it's more than the premium draft picks that they have
available to them, and it throws a wrench into what
we think they could be doing here in the first
two days. It's trade possibilities that we don't know about.
So let's say they come out of the first two
days without a corner. We're looking around like, who the
(19:49):
hell is gonna start at corner in week one? Maybe
they have something down the pipeline. And that's kind of
how it worked out at running back last year, right
as we all looked around like when are they gonna
draft a running back? And then Jerry's speaking confidence into
ze g Elliott and bringing him in. So these outside
options definitely factor in. You just wonder where and what
position group supposed to be.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Now, clearly they need a better plan than net this year.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
I agree he still out there.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
By the way, it's hard to envision the Cowboys and
making a major trade giving away major draft collateral because
everybody now just values these picks now more than ever,
like today and tomorrow. That's that's what you waited all
year for is to use these this commodity. But I
also remember Randy Moscott traded, you know, going into Day two.
(20:33):
So it's happened that great players have been moved from
one team to another, even after the first day of
the draft and before the start of the second day.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
That definitely think they're going down. I mean, you know,
if they get an opportunity, I think they'll move down.
I don't even I mean, I think they're seeking an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
Well, that makes sense, right, They've this is a team
that's got so many holes in their roster. They're in
a division with the defending Super Bowl champion and a
Washington team on the rise at play in the NFC
Championship game last year. Look at all the holes they
have to fill. They don't have a fourth round pick.
(21:09):
Most people think this is a draft where you can
get four or five starting players on a good team,
and so if that's the objective, then trading back seems
like a very realistic possibility.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Something you said right before the break it intrigued me
when you said you thought, maybe there's only six blue
chip players here in this draft.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
If you're sitting at twelve in a blue chip player there,
what do you do?
Speaker 3 (21:31):
And I'll give you an example, but take him, Okay,
I'll just throw it one out there.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
I got him, Tyler Warren.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
Okay, cool?
Speaker 4 (21:39):
I take him tied in at Penn State.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
Cool.
Speaker 4 (21:41):
If you're sitting at twelve and he's.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
There, you Jake, I mean, Jake Ferguson was really good
early in his career, not so great last year. We
talked about it earlier, talked about guys who can score touchdowns,
red zone guys, versatile players. I mean, this guy even
played wild cat quarterback right at Penn State. I'd absolutely
take Warren.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Can you make a can you make a play? Do
you make those better? It ain't. You ain't got to
overthink these things, man. That's what happens too many times.
People started over there.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
I mean, if you're talking about this guy being a
blue chip tight end, remember Witten's the greatest tight end
in history and a potential Hall of Famer. He's a
second round pick. Was he a third? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (22:14):
Third?
Speaker 2 (22:15):
So if Warren rates that much higher than a guy
like Witten, now maybe he won't have the career. He
probably won't have the career that Witton had. But folks, will,
but I mean, geez, for all the things that Warren
can do, and he is demonstrated he's able to do
it in a major college against great competition, I would
absolutely stick there.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
And then if you certainly run a ball, you can
certainly do toil personnel and then get him on both
out there.
Speaker 5 (22:36):
You certainly could dangle it in front of a team too.
I think there could be some trade value if a
guy like Tyler Warren is there at twelve and a
tight end needy team. You think about the Colts that
they're looking to at fourteen, Yeah, they're looking to grab
a tight end here.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
They had the worst tight end production in the NFL last.
Speaker 5 (22:50):
Year off when their room is awful, and that's you
could slide back to fourteen and probably pick up a
day two pick.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
What about Denver slots? I mean, Sean Payton has talked
about needing a joker player in his off. Isn't that
what Warren would be?
Speaker 4 (23:01):
So? Is he a blue chip on your board?
Speaker 2 (23:04):
He is?
Speaker 5 (23:05):
Yes, I would. I would try to dangle that in
front of teams as much as I could. But if
I had to stick and pick, I'd stick and pick.
Speaker 4 (23:10):
Can you can you reveal your blue chips for him.
Let's go.
Speaker 5 (23:13):
Let's Travis Hunter, Genty Carter, ab Dual Carter out of
Penn State, Well Campbell Lsu. I have Ted McMillan at
five out of Arizona, Kelvin Banks out of Texas, Mason
Graham out of Michigan, and then that's that's where i'd
probably have Tyler Warren.
Speaker 2 (23:28):
Okay, so the last of your blue chippers.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
Yeah, yeah, okay, let's let's throw Banks from from Texas.
If he's sitting there, are we are you all in agreement?
Take the take the blue chip player at offensive line.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
If people we planning him in techle were planning him.
Speaker 5 (23:43):
A guard, probably that's at least a leak thought around
around Kelvin Banks, But it would be you'd have to
shuffle some things up. I feel like maybe you could
probably put him at right guard and he'd be fine.
He has the he has the football knowledge to apply that,
and I think he has a work ethic to figure
it out. But it would be requiring a move from
left tackle to right guard. That would be interesting.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Gee, we we saw how easy that was last year
for the guy that drafted moved from right tackle to
left tackle.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
That guy wasn't that talented real, he was not a
blue chip player. In his defense, he was not a
blue chip.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
Player and ain't his fault they overdrafted him.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
He was always going to be a development project too.
I mean, we knew that when the pick was When
the pick was made, you would expect the development to
be a lot further along.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
There were things that were within his control. You say
that wasn't his fault that he was overdrafted, but there
were things maybe within his control that he didn't control
very well, like what like being available, like practicing.
Speaker 5 (24:39):
Adding weight throughout the season. It felt like he dropped
away as the season went on. Penalty issues. Yeah, that's
a good standard.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Did you say, Mazie, he said, I said, dropped during
the season special.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
He's trying to get his speedover game.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
But what so, what wide receivers are you passing up
in that scenario, you're passing up the two guys we
talked about earlier, Abuka and Golden to take an offensive
lineman again, Well, I know, I know, best player available.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
Well you said, but you know in this term not
just best, but we're talking blue chips. Let's say if
you only have six, if you say, hey, there's six
blue chip player.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
Or whatever Nick had. It was probably a little more
than sixty seven or eight.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
But like somebody would if that's the case, somebody would be, oh,
I can't believe Kelvin Banks is still there. Let's go
get it. Yeah, And then I moved back to them
as long as it wouldn't like twenty eight.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Once again, this is this is the interesting part, and
it's just just me, but.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
They did have they did have a hall of potential
Hall of Fame player at right guard when last season started.
Who's not there anymore? And they do want to be
able to run the football, So that's maybe the investment
that's required.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
An interesting name to throw out as a Gray's Abel
offensive lineman out of North Dakota State, he would be
able to slide into right guard, and you talk about
needing to elevate that room a little bit, he would
be able to do that. He's a day once.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
He dominated at the Senior bowlright, That's why he kind
of forced himself into the first round.
Speaker 5 (26:04):
Guy rocketed his stuff, he scored.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
He's what started at four different positions on the offensive line.
Speaker 5 (26:08):
Every guy at the center exactly, say this guy is
six foot six, three hundred and twelve pounds and he
vert jumps thirty six and a half inches.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
Okay, now we're not worried about six six four guard.
That's lovely tall four guard.
Speaker 5 (26:20):
Yeah, yeah, I understand that. It's it's the length that
he did he had. He does have some length concerns
with teams, But there are teams who thinks he can
play tackle too. There are teams that think he can play.
He signed like a tackle would. Yeah, I have him.
I have him as a guard.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
North Dakota State. Lack of competition and concern there.
Speaker 5 (26:36):
Whenever he elevated at the Senior Bowl and really dominated
there play that was that was eye opening to me. Also,
this offensive line coach here coach at North Kota State
for six seven seasons, won multiple national championships there, so
he has a good insight to that program. The only
thing I worry about was Zabel is He's a little gravvy,
but great in the run game. Lots of experience in
the run game. If you need a guy that wants
(26:57):
to dominate and be physical, like Schottenheimer's talked about, this
wouldn't make a lot of sense.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
What about the numbers they keep throwing it offensive line.
They've signed a lot of offensive lineman here, which to me
makes me just think, Okay, they feel like we'll just
throw a bunch of bodies at this thing and we'll
figure it out and we'll try to make and address
the needs.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
In other I think it's been five offensive linemen in
the last fifteen years that they've taken in the first round,
but the only one they've taken in the top fifteen
is Tyron Smith. The other guys are all in the twenties.
I guess Zach Matt was fourteen.
Speaker 4 (27:32):
Right, was in the teams.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
Yeah, I mean, if you're going to run the football,
that's what it takes. And I think, I mean Jerry knows,
speaking from his point of view and how he wants
to build a team and how Steven wants to build
a team. That's how That's what their best teams have been.
They've been able to run the football like that's what
That's what Jason Garrett did when he got here, right,
he made as Jerry said when Tyron Smith was retire
(27:55):
making his retirement anouncer, Tyron Smith being the number nine
pick and the success we had with him, he changed
our viewpoint on committing first round draft picks to offensive
linemen because they hadn't done it since nineteen eighty one
until then, and that's that those were Garrett's best teams.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
You know, and their best but the best running backs
in their history of the first round guys, there's.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
Something to be said for that.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
I know DeMarco Murray won NFL Player of the Year,
he was a third round pick. But I mean when
you look at Emmitt Smith, you look at Tony dor
set me, he's the first round guys.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
Even Zeke was a two time NFL rushing.
Speaker 4 (28:25):
Yeah yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
So so I say that in terms of there is
something to be said to go taking a guy in
the first round who can absolutely play.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
And I think.
Speaker 3 (28:37):
I said on the last show, my surprise pick, where like,
hey man, we didn't we sat on it, but we
had we thought this guy can help us. Would be
Hampton out of North Carolina, because I don't think genty
will be there twelve first.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
I don't think you'd be there, but I.
Speaker 3 (28:51):
Could see them somebody falling in love with a Hampton
and Shoddy being a guy, you know, running the ball
and his dad and everything, like, hey, we think this
is a three down back. We can get out here
and get it done. That would be like, hey, they
did it. That could be my surprise thing that where's
he on your stacked on your running back listening?
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Anyways?
Speaker 5 (29:10):
Show a few Jerseys Hampton, Hampton's third. I have him
behind Jency and Trevon Henderson.
Speaker 4 (29:15):
Yeah, so look they've got to get it back at
some point time.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
But I'm just which one is a better pass receiver
Henderson for sure and better bullet blitz pick up guy.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Yep, non partial to Henton, but he's a bad man.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
Really, I wasn't partially. I have a first round great
on him. I think I think I think he elevated
a playoff.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
I mean he's good during regular season, but the playoff he's.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
That's what they do around here. He's like, they're good
in the in the regular season and great in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
Can run it, I can catch it. And he had
a couple of devastating blitz pick ups in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Well, I mean they they took another guy who had
a good little playoff run over there at Stadium and Arlington.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
He did great form about four years and Shoty. What
is his teams is where he's called plays. The Jets
and the Seahawks both led the NFL and rushing with
him calling the play. So to me, that's where this
team has to go. And that's like I said to
you before, like if the greatest justification to me in
moving from Mike McCarthy to Brian Schottenheimer, with schottenheimer'll run
(30:14):
the football, McCarthy was never going to do that. And
so if this organization's front office wanted to move this
team in that direction, which is the way they've succeeded
in the postseason they won their championships, then Shottenheimer makes
more sense to McCarthy.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
All right, So let me just throw this out here.
Running back or wide receiver. If you're the Cowboys, where
do you go in the first round?
Speaker 1 (30:36):
Wellide receiver it because there's more running backs. I agree
with that.
Speaker 5 (30:39):
Agree This running back class is so deep. I have
thirty one with draftable grades. You're gonna find your guy?
Speaker 1 (30:46):
Well do you guys? Gotaboo it?
Speaker 5 (30:47):
I have a last one of the third and it
honestly hurt me to put that third round on there.
But he deserves it. He really does this. He's a dog.
Speaker 4 (30:55):
What about gettings over there at K State.
Speaker 5 (30:58):
I have he's the top one in my fifth round.
He's super long and lanky, kind of upright and narrow.
I think that's gonna lead to some issues, not only
durability wise at the NFL level, but guys just being
able to bring him down a little bit easier. I
like to contact balance with a lot more.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Other guys and Cowboys having drafted a running back in
four of the last five drafts, the last draft they
took the last draft, the last player they drafted at
running back was too fun That he's the only player
in the last forty three selections at running back that
they've taken.
Speaker 5 (31:30):
That's wild, that's mighty.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
Gonna take one, wow early in this draft.
Speaker 5 (31:36):
Certainly right Friday.
Speaker 4 (31:37):
Certainly it has to go down Friday.
Speaker 5 (31:40):
If we're going into Saturday and they haven't made a
pick yet, oh my goodness, it has to be.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
Yeah, they gotta get it.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
Yeah, it has to happen in the first three picks,
first three rounds. By tomorrow. They better have a by
tomorrow night. They better.
Speaker 1 (31:51):
To me, that's why they need to trade down, because
that extra third, hopefully third, maybe fourth. But to that
you pick up, you the flexibility and maneuverability to solve
some of these problems you get.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Okay, I mean all thirty of these guys aren't going
to be great NFL starting running correct, Yeah, and so
that's why you need to pick him something.
Speaker 1 (32:10):
You need to get the guy you want, not the
guy who's left.
Speaker 5 (32:13):
Over facial tooting out of Virginia Tech at seventy six.
That would be big play guy, big speed guy, early
down guy.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
A lot of fumbles though, nine fumbles.
Speaker 1 (32:24):
That would be all right, small hands.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
Everybody chased the ball.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
By the way, I come out NFL network a mecca
and we're looking a him as the number two, and
then the guy who's just the number one over him
was Marvin Harrison junior Mike.
Speaker 12 (32:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
And to be able to compete and work in a
room like that with me.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
I want guys like that because you're playing at a
high level with I mean, you're playing with.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Some world class competitors.
Speaker 4 (32:50):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
Just to get on a field, yes, to get I
mean the I mean, can you imagine the sadness.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
Oh you're you know, you're some great high school all
world player and you go see the depth Charter Ohio
State man.
Speaker 1 (33:04):
But that's why you go. I mean, just like you
go at other place for other things, you go go
to compete against the best, because if I can make
it here, I can do it well.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
But in today's society, how many of these kids don't
even they they won't stick around and compete. And look,
we have seen some really good players go ahead and
tell Columba thank you and roll on and do Okay,
Joe Burrow did, I couldn't yours?
Speaker 1 (33:28):
Did?
Speaker 9 (33:28):
All?
Speaker 7 (33:28):
Right?
Speaker 6 (33:28):
Man?
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Jameson Williams left, Yeah, I need to play.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Yeah, so and so for him Camore leaving incarnate word
to become the number one pick in the NFL draft.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. You gotta
do what you gotta do. But I I just I
find value in that. And to me, I think that's
something that people don't talk about enough as you're going
through this process. But if the Cowboys are being true
to what they say about wanting character, about wanting to compete, let.
Speaker 1 (33:55):
Me ask you this, So, what if you could trade
for a runner for it took I don't know whatever
picket took to get Pickens or Jamison Williams one, would
you want that? As opposed to a draft pie.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
I don't want no pickickens. I don't want no.
Speaker 5 (34:08):
Pickings, talk about guys. It wouldn't work here.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
Well, Jayler's not here anymore, so it might we wouldn't
have that rich.
Speaker 5 (34:15):
At least that'd be such a middle finger.
Speaker 3 (34:18):
To get our last break in here on the media
match next Round one of the NFL Draft.

Today Cowboys Football and Miller Lite.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
What a pairing can cracks?
Speaker 12 (36:03):
A kickoff tailgates going way past postgame Sunday night overtimes
followed by Monday Morning Swager Brisky and the Smoker, Miller
Lte and the Cluck, America's team playing America's greatest sport.
Miller Lite the only beer of the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas
Cowboys Football taste like Miller Time Celebrate Responsibly twenty twenty three,
(36:27):
Miller Brown Company, Fort Worth, Texas.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
Back to media mash, media mash. Heading into Round one
of the NFL drafts could be held in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The Cowboys on the twelfth overall pick. We have Jacques
Taylor ed Werder got the Carris. I am new he scruggs.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
Okay, things don't usually go well for Dallas. It happened
in Green Bay.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
Yeah, but they sent Matt Pittman up there for Meat Church,
so his kids are gonna help make one of the picks,
so hopefully they'll bring him, bring him some good luck.
We've not talked at all all about the defensive line
and the Cowboys can't stop the run, and not enough
was done in the offseason. Right now, it made me
feel good about that. Uh don't know what they'll do
(37:10):
at twelve. Haven't seen anyone as a defensive tackle. Mock
to them at twelve at all, But Nick Harris will
start with you. You've got your big draft board out there.
The Cowboys do need to at some point in time
make some picks to address the run because I don't know,
you know, it's dude, a Saquon Barkleay's in the league,
in the division.
Speaker 4 (37:28):
That kind of.
Speaker 5 (37:28):
Thing I have seen Walter Nolan mocked at twelve quite
a bit, especially over the course of the last twenty
four hours too. So that's that's one to potentially keep
an eye on. Are we just focusing on defense sacle
or the D line in general?
Speaker 4 (37:38):
You d line in general?
Speaker 5 (37:39):
I think at twelve you can also look at mikeil
Williams out of Georgia, Shamar Stewart out of Texas, A
and m two guys that they've done a lot of
homework on understand who they are and potentially what they
could bring from a run defense perspective. I think there's
a lot of emphasis. It's funny you mentioned that there's
a lot of emphasis I think from the scouting department
and trying to find guys that specialize in defending the runs.
So those would be the two day one on guys.
(38:00):
I'd look at day two. That's where things start to
open up a little bit. You could look at a
James Piercetewne out of Tennessee. If they know felt like
the character concerns, they could check that off and be
all right with that I wouldn't, but the defensive tackle position,
Kenneth Grant, who had six four to three hundred and
thirty pounds. He's got crazy speed. I actually saw him
working out during the pre draft process, and that's one
(38:20):
of the fastest humans I've ever seen at that size.
Speaker 2 (38:22):
Michigan defensive Town.
Speaker 5 (38:23):
Michigan defensive tackle.
Speaker 6 (38:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (38:25):
And then another guy they've done a lot of homework
on that we said, Michigan defensive tackle. And another guy
I've seen them do a lot of homework on is
Alfred Collins out of Texas sixty six three thirty two.
And he's just specializes in the run game. Doesn't have
a ton of pass rush upside. The only thing he
brings to the pass game is that he's got these
huge claws that go up and bat balls down at
the line. But he could play one tech, he could
(38:46):
play three tech. Give you some versatility there. He is
dealing with a pretty nasty calf strain though, so he
probably wouldn't be ready till training.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
Kim and Super Bowl teams you covered they were really
good on the defensive line and yeah.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
And Matty Eberfluss is talking about, you know, concentrating personnel
there and having an eight or nine man wave of
players that you know, rotate in the game at various times.
And I think because we're so focused on their need
for offensive, dynamic playmakers, we overlooked the defense. The defense
was thirty first in the NFL last year. Only Carolina
(39:20):
allowed more points, and they allowed more points than any
team in NFL history. And you know, you talk about
being able to stop the run, they were thirtieth in
the NFL in yards allowed per rush, almost five yards
per carry against them. And as you mentioned, the NFL
rushing champion, Saquon Barkley plays in this division, as do
two of the best running quarterbacks in football, and Jalen
(39:42):
Hurts and Jayden Daniels, and so yeah, that's got to
be a priority for them to fix this defense. And
too often, I don't think, you know, fans and media
recognized just how desperate they are on that side of
the ball, and they're playing They have their third defensive
coordinator in three years that you know, MC is trying
to draft personnel for a third different guy. I mean,
(40:02):
that's that can't be easy. So every everybody that ibra
Flus and Harris isn't gonna fit ideally into what he's
doing because they weren't drafted for him.
Speaker 4 (40:10):
And you have to play the AFC West this year, so.
Speaker 2 (40:14):
They have any good quarterbacks in the NFC one.
Speaker 4 (40:16):
Good quarterbacks and you know, and you got head coaches.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Who have won Super Bowls who.
Speaker 4 (40:21):
Like running the ball, running the ball.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
So with this Peyton with his harbor Andy Reid these days.
Speaker 4 (40:27):
Yeah, yeah, it's problem.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
It's problem is that Pete Carroll.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
I was gonna say Pete Carroll's that was That's what
he's at a running back.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
But the Raiders are horrible running the football. But they
might not be coming.
Speaker 3 (40:36):
Out of this if you get genty. You know, if
they end up getting genty up here, the.
Speaker 5 (40:40):
Trouble trouble would be a fun trip to Vegas.
Speaker 4 (40:42):
Trouble who.
Speaker 1 (40:46):
For who?
Speaker 2 (40:47):
Tourists? Yeah, yeah, no, look, not football teams.
Speaker 3 (40:50):
They just have to go get better on the defensive
line or this can be another you know, seven win season.
I mean, this is this is something that has to
be addressed. And I know it's easy for us to
talk about these fantasy football players, but Jack, they got it.
Speaker 4 (41:07):
They got addressed.
Speaker 1 (41:07):
No, no, they do. That's that's the first thing. But
it all works together. It's all symbiatic. I mean, you
have to have a much better offense. If you get
a better running game, you get better receivers, you get
a better offense is more explosively if you stay on
the field long and scot more points.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
Is there no way they would take a pass rusher
at twelve pair with Michael Parsons.
Speaker 5 (41:25):
Marshall, Michael Williams and Shamar Stewart definitely had that type
of upside, especially Shamar Stewart. He didn't have the sack
production at Texas A and M four and a half sacks, but.
Speaker 1 (41:33):
Then he can't be back.
Speaker 5 (41:34):
Yeah, I agree with you. I have a third round
great on him. But teams love his athleticism and they
see his quarterback pressure numbers and they take that. I
agree with you.
Speaker 1 (41:43):
Ye'all tell me the last dude got paid for precious.
Speaker 5 (41:47):
Yeah, so Dicky, oh yeah, might be right.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
Anthony Spencer almost Anthony almost almost a almost got that.
Speaker 1 (41:57):
I mean, coaches always talk about it the pressures, and
the pressure matter is, but it make us pay for sex.
Speaker 2 (42:02):
But I think the signing ohso Diggy Zoo back to
a contract was a significant move and a significant you know,
commitment to the defense and the eber Flu's yes, and
a recognition that that's an area of concern.
Speaker 4 (42:15):
Yes, they just need more bodies, but at.
Speaker 2 (42:17):
Least they're not trying to replace him and get somebody else,
which is the situation they face if they didn't commit
the big dollars and they got a favorable contract.
Speaker 4 (42:24):
Look, they they they did that.
Speaker 2 (42:26):
When it came they won that good right, there have
been many they won. They won that one.
Speaker 3 (42:29):
When it came to that, that whole situation, they did
a good job there. There's just more work that needs
to be done. But you know, if we're looking at
at Knick's board here, there's really not that definitely not
a blue chip.
Speaker 2 (42:42):
But what about a corner? I think there I think
there's more concern on the coaching staff about not having
a slot corner ready to go, and people really.
Speaker 1 (42:52):
From Michigan.
Speaker 5 (42:53):
Will Johnson, I think he actually does have some nickel versatility.
I I I wouldn't take him at twelve. He's my
fourth corner on the I have him behind Travis Hunter,
jodd A Baron out of Texas and Maxwell Harrison out
of Kentucky. Maxwell Harrison out of Kentucky if he's somehow
there at forty four, run the car to the table.
I don't think he will be I think he's gonna
go back in first round. But that's that would be
my guy. And then a realistic forty four is Trey
(43:15):
Almos had an ole miss. Now he's an outside guy,
so you still have to figure out what's going on.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
Nicol Well, think I move Bland inside if they had to.
He's played there before.
Speaker 5 (43:21):
You know, what's you know what's funny is like I
wonder when they tell blend Hey go inside, knowing that
a pay day's coming. I wonder how he's gonna take
that durn Bland will probably take it in stride, but
just knowing in the back of his agent won't. Yeah,
his agent will be like, yo, hold on a minute.
Speaker 3 (43:35):
It's gonna be fun. It's gonna be a fun night.
Obviously things will happen here and and we'll see I'm
I will just be I will have the same feeling
when Ted McMillan goes off the board. Early when I
saw Patrick Richartan go off the board to Denver.
Speaker 2 (43:53):
That turned out okay.
Speaker 3 (43:53):
I was gonna say that one turned out pretty damn good,
but at that moment in time.
Speaker 1 (43:58):
It was some Chris fault.
Speaker 4 (43:59):
I was.
Speaker 3 (44:00):
I was because a certain certain fits like this guy
you take certain Diggs, Yeah you're good.
Speaker 2 (44:07):
And Horton was the other guy they really wanted, right,
but they wanted him. They wanted either one of those corners.
And then right in front of them, they both go
and they get stuck with Michael Parsons, trade back with
the Giants pick stuck with him.
Speaker 4 (44:20):
Yeah. Yeah, so so that was just but certain I was.
Speaker 3 (44:23):
You know, you do all that bog drafting, hear this,
I'm certain it just fits, it fits and nobody and
then you come to find out I guess what, you
know what, big fan do it the whole time.
Speaker 4 (44:30):
I get that guy and you're like on it.
Speaker 3 (44:32):
And that's why I'm not looking toward McMillan, because I'm
just like, you know what, No, this is too good
of a football player. And then you chill me your
big board. They're like, ye see, seems too good of
a football player to be hitting.
Speaker 5 (44:42):
There twelve this big fang, you know, the biggest Cowboys villain.
Like over the course of like he's instant consistent villain.
I mean, you're a different team.
Speaker 2 (44:48):
Oh, my gosh, Denver, Philly. Now he's in Philly.
Speaker 4 (44:52):
Taking a blueprint everywhere you go.
Speaker 3 (44:53):
See you got these guys and even said that, yes,
as I said, the blueprint.
Speaker 2 (44:57):
Adam, I got the blueprint on these guys.
Speaker 4 (44:59):
He just took a straight from jay Z to blue print.
Speaker 3 (45:01):
Will take jay Z's photo out to put big fangio
and yes, yes he is that. Nick Harris, thank you,
good Order, thank you, Jack Taylor, thank you Jazz, Chris Beam,
everybody involved, Dallas Cowboy dot Com.
Speaker 4 (45:11):
I'm newly Scruggs. Enjoy the draft tonight.
Speaker 11 (45:14):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
