Speaker 1 (00:03):
The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com
and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. Cowboys This is media Match,
a roundtable of Cowboys insiders, drumping wisdom and offering sizzling
takes on the current state of your Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Now your host knew.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
He scrugs, all right, let's ride maybe coming to you
from the Star in Frisco, the SWBC podcast studios.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Hi, everybody, I am new, he Scrugslaw with Nick Harris
is a four wur star Telegraph and the Hall of Famer.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
He is Ed Werder.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
It was I don't know, maybe I think maybe it
was five a little bit five six o'clock in the morning.
I was, I was doing some early morning reading. I'm like,
well alert, I sluck till eight. I'm like, what a
morning to do that?

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Right?

Speaker 4 (00:56):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (00:57):
And I got a text from somebody who runs a
look radio station who wanted to know who do you recommend?
We talked to from the Steelers, and I was like,
oh my god, they must assigned Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Okayed, No, they made a trade for Carl Pickens. The
Cowboys will send Carl Pickens, Carl who once played here.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
Hence your confusion, Yes.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Who once played her? Why do people call me? But
but they know I got a call? I mean they
know I got a show at this time. I hate
people do that and turn that all.

Speaker 5 (01:25):
Look at this, that's crazy.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Suppose I just posted on Twitter that you guys are
on this show, so now people want to know how
they can find it.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Just so you know, Nick, that person consistently will call
me at six fifteen. We're not doing TV.

Speaker 5 (01:39):
I've only gotten three phone calls from this person, and
one was at midnight, the other one just now, and
another one at another inopportune times. A he's got an
ability there.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Okay, And anybody trying to get ahold of you over there?

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Not right at the moment. No, My sources are all
talking to you guys.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Apparently, so George Pickett's coming to the Cowboys. Cow going
to send a third round pick in twenty twenty six
and a twenty twenty seven fifth round pick to the Steelers,
Steelers sending back a sixth round pick. Here, I'll start
with you ed your thoughts on this trade.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Not shocking in that we knew that the biggest hole
on the roster was for a number two receiver Op
opposite Ceedee Lamb, who if you look at the numbers,
the biggest disparity in all of football in the NFL
in terms of receiving yards is that between Cede Lamb
and the Cowboys' next best receiver, Jake Ferguson. It's like

(02:36):
the biggest golf in the NFL. Everybody else has their
top two receivers are a wake closer in terms of
productivity than that. The thing that's interesting to me is
you got a first time head coach in Brian Schottenheimer,
a very experienced coach overall in general, but now he's
while he gets a player that they they're investing in
him in a way they didn't Mike McCarthy. He also

(02:56):
now has to manage a player who can be difficult
even within a game, let alone during the course of
a season or in the locker room during the week,
like he may not be eligible at the end of
the game or at some point during the game. He's
I think he's the second most penalized receiver in the
NFL the last three years. But he's a dynamic player,
a big time playmaker. I mean, I asked somebody here

(03:17):
why they did it, said they found a player that
makes the more dynamic causes defense problems. Called him a big,
talented wide receiver who can win one on one, rare
body control, excellent ball skills, competitive as hell, and loves football.

Speaker 5 (03:31):
From a football standpoint, it makes a lot of sense.
I mean, you look at what George Pickens can do
as an outside receiver, the type of routes he's had
most success with, and how that lines up with his
now quarterback in Dak Prescott. From a football perspective, there's
there's it's hard to find anything that is a negative here.
It's off the field. That's where the risk comes into play,
and it's it's, uh, you're you're assuming all of this headaches'

(03:54):
tuly on in Pittsburgh, there's some Yeah, there's on the
field too.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (03:57):
Absolutely, Off the field translates onto the field too. And
you wonder how that's going to work in a culture
here that Brian Schottenheimer's been trying to build over the
last couple of months. It's like, hey, culture first, culture first,
that will help translate the wins. It's like you potentially
just throw a really bad apple into that talking to
some people in Pittsburgh and then talking to a player
for the Steelers this morning, trying to get some more
context on George Pickens. This is a guy that is viewed,

(04:18):
as it was told to me, that he's kind of
like the bad kid in class, where the teachers hate him,
but all the kids love him, and he's respected in
the locker room. He has a lot of friends that
are teammates of his from the Steelers' days. But it
was the run ins with the coaches. It was the
headbutting with the coaches in front office, and they felt
like they were heading tours a crossroads this offseason where
they either had to pay him or trade him, and

(04:39):
so they went ahead and got ahead of that and
got compensation for it. Before you know, other teams started
to realize that they were pinned up against the wall
with him.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
And Mike Tomlin's a pretty highly regarded coach who seems
to get along extremely well with most players. So you
have to question whether this immature behavior or unprofessional conduct
is something that can be coached out of him in
a situation that he faces now, which is now he's
got to prove he's a thirty million dollar receiver here.

Speaker 5 (05:05):
Yeah, and that's another fascinating aspect of it is you
bring him in, he's on an expiring contract. Do you
get the deal done now or do you take the
risk of the one year rental and potentially he's worth
thirty million dollars next year ed and then your pockets
are getting a little bit even more than knowing that
Tyler Smith is on the horizon, Deron Bland, Jake Ferguson,
if you want to keep these guys around. George Pickens

(05:25):
now factors into that in a very big way.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
My first thought was, okay, a third round pick, Those
are valuable Day two pick. Was it too much or
was it just right?

Speaker 6 (05:41):
Nick?

Speaker 5 (05:43):
Time will tell from a football perspective. I think it's
just right. But if the thing's off the field, the
character concerns really start to manifest here, then that's going
to look back and you're not gonna love the compensation there.
I will give the Cowboys credit. They're taking a risk here,
they're taking a chance, and I don't think you can
discredit for then that down the line. But how exactly
we look back on this with hindsight being twenty twenty,

(06:04):
I'm not one hundred percent sure. But as we sit
right now, what is at May seventh, twenty twenty five.
I give the Cowboys front office credit for at least
taking the chance, because I think that's what we've been
parading over the course of the last few years, is like,
just take the chance on somebody, go ahead and spend
that draft capital, see what happens. And this has the
potential to actually be an underpay if he performs to

(06:24):
the level of we know he's capable of, but it
also definitely has a potential to be an overpay. There's
a wide range right there.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
It's a bold move, right and it's one that suggests that,
at least internally, they think they can win now, Like,
you don't do this if you're not trying to win
the division right now. No, Matt, we Tod We talked
all along about how they've done nothing but losed round
to Philadelphia, the defending Super Bowl champs, and the Washington Commanders.
This move narrows that gap in my mind, I mean,
because this is something they had to have if they're

(06:53):
going to be an elite offense. They haven't had it
since what they had Amari Cooper or healthy Michael Gallup
playing there. This they effectively have two number one receivers again,
Like if you talk about ceedee lamf he goes out,
can this guy elevate and be a one? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (07:06):
Absolutely, no question about. He's done it.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
He's been that in Pittsburgh and beside the being motivated
for the financial payoff at the end of the year
and securing a long term, big money, guaranteed contract, Like
he gets to play with the best quarterback by far
he's played with. I mean, the numbers he's put up
are pretty amazing, given he's played with three different quarterbacks
in Pittsburgh and none of them have played at an

(07:30):
elite level.

Speaker 5 (07:30):
No, can I propose a question, I don't want to
take sure Militari four years, one hundred million dollars. He says,
I'll sign it today. Do you do it? Knowing the
risk involved?

Speaker 2 (07:39):
I want to see him on the field first, Yeah,
I'll risk it. I have to pay him thirty million.

Speaker 5 (07:43):
And knowing Jerry the same field, Knowing Jerry, he would
say this. He's saying that about Michael Parsons exactly.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Well, if you can say that about Michael Barses, you've
got to say it about Pickens.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Stay stay in that realm here. So Brian Schottenheimer has
gone out and said, you know, they want a certain
type of guy.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
Ed.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
You and I were here when Bill Parcels was around,
and Bill came in and said that same thing. But
then Bill would also kind of contradict himself and say,
say the boy scouts fellas.

Speaker 5 (08:08):
See, oh it looks nice.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
So I always took that as if your talent outweighs
your problems, I'll deal with you with Parcels. Thus Lawrence Taylor.
Thus when we saw Antonio Brown Bryant get escorted out
of the building because he threw a jersey Bill's face.
And so that's what I think about with pickings right now,
is he's they have this and what they want, but

(08:32):
you know, we'll make an exception here, and we got
to make an accept.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Well, Steelers decided he wasn't worth it anymore. That's why
he was available.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Yeah, but the cowboys are saying, you know, we'll give
a three because you know what, we can.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
Get it back.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
That's a compic if he goes somewhere, we need a number.

Speaker 5 (08:45):
Did he sign a contract that rich though if it
didn't work out for it to be a third round
type competitory pick? Does that make sense?

Speaker 4 (08:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (08:53):
I think it would probably be closer to a fifth
verse six. It just depends on the contract.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
So this is this it's a gamble. It's the gamble.
But I think if you're a Cowboy fan, you have
to be happy because you didn't get what you wanted
in the draft and you get a guy who's got
number one experience, who's played in this league that you
can put in on the other side of CD Lamb.
The Cowboys gave the fans what they wanted essentially in

(09:20):
my opinion, and Jerry talked about making a deal, and
here's here's that deal.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
And I assume this is what Brian Schottenheimer wanted and
what Dak Prescott wanted and how they can whether they
can manage him effectively remains to be seen. I'm sure
a lot of that's gonna fall on Dak, right. I mean,
you don't have a very experienced wide receivers coach. You
have an inexperienced head coach, and I don't see Ceedee
Lamb getting in his face and telling you how to
act in a professional manner. So it's going to fall

(09:46):
to Dak. But like you said, I mean, it's a
perfect marriage in terms of the way Dak likes to
play the position. The vertical ability of this player, you
know he can. He can high point the ball and
makes contested catches. He scores in the red zone. Da
loves throwing the gold ball. This guy's as good as
there is in the league at.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
That I think you have. The more I talk about it,
and I'm glad I got you guys here to bounce
these things off. I went from saying man three is
a lot to looking up the statistics of the player
and seeing like, Okay, this is a really good football player.
You needed a number two. He was playing at Pittsburgh
as a number one. This is a this is this

(10:24):
is the kind of risk you take. You take a
risk like this.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
Now we know why they let Jordan Lewis go.

Speaker 5 (10:30):
This is the plan all along. His tweet this morning
cracked me up.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
Yeah, you know, you know he he I will miss him, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Because he got He got into the guy's face after
the game in Pittsburgh last year and said some unflattering
things about him. And then he winds up what's saying today.
I guess God knew what he was doing or something.

Speaker 5 (10:48):
Yeah, God knew what he's doing and put me in Jacksonville.
I think that's what he said.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
Yeah, yeah, And I think you bring up a really
good point about.

Speaker 6 (10:55):
Who is.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
Who's the person that reaches George Pickens. You need that.
And I go back to uh be four year time
Nick Randy Moss when the Cowboys didn't take him, and
Jerry's been like, we can't take him because our locker
room looks like and he ends up. He ends up
in Minnesota with Dennis Green. They've got Chris Carter and

(11:18):
they got Jake Reed, and Randy Moss was they took
him under their wing and they they really helped him.
And thus Randy went on and have an amazing rookie
year on It was the way to a Hall of
Fame career. And you bring up Dak Prescott here, I
just wonder who else can can you know? Get to
Pickens and let him know. Man, you got two things
going on here. One, you can get yourself a big

(11:40):
old contract because if you have a great year, Jerry,
we know Jerry and let stars go. You come up
here perform like a star. Jerry will pay.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
Jerry loves the stars' offensive stars.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Yes. And Two, this is the big top man, this
is the stage you want to be on You're going
to be on NBC three times. You're going to be
on Monday Night Football. You gotta plan Thanksgiving, Debbi. All
this plug, you want, all the you want, all the smoke,
you want all you want the shine and that people
look at you and say, hey, he had a great year.
You want to be signing a big old contract. But

(12:10):
we've seen so many players Nick leave here, who've come
here and they've gone on other places. Can people see
him and they're on TV? This is a good opportunity
for this young man.

Speaker 5 (12:18):
Yeah, it is. And you wonder how different his approach
will be arriving in Dallas versus how it ended in
Pittsburgh because, like I mentioned earlier, he was prepared to
put that front office out of crossroads this softseason. Does
he have that same approach coming into here? You know,
the initial indications are no, But what does that look like?
What does that look like for Pickens? What does that
look like for the front office, the coaching staff, Dak Prescott.
All of a sudden, he's got an issue that he

(12:39):
has to handle in Pickens as well. It's not going
to be smooth sailing best case scenario. So there's gonna
be a lot, and you still have an emotional CD
Lamb too. I'm not saying that it's to the level
of George Pickens, but there's a high probability you have
two receivers throwing fits on the sideline at any given time.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
And CD has already talked about the way he's gone
about that in the past. Part in San Francisco. If
you're there was a bad body language Baltimore last year, Yeah,
and he apologized for it, and he's done it. He
said what he believes, but he does it in a
better way now. The thing with the dynamic between Dak
and Pickens is like Dak's the established leader on this
football team, and Dak won't be afraid to get in

(13:18):
his face if necessary. And Dak has the thing that
Pickens needs. He has the ball.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
We'll take our first break when we come back. A
lot of excitement about a duo here between Lamb and Pickens.

Speaker 4 (13:33):
Does Jerry know the agent's name yet?

Speaker 3 (13:37):
I'll let you discover that, ed. But if they're a
running team, how happy can these guys be? Because Ryan
satan Hier says he wants to be a running football team.
We'll do that next with ed Nick, I'm newing this

Back to medium, mash media, mash right here, Dallas Cowboys
dot com. We are here at the Star in Frisco.
Murder and kerosim new he Scruggs. All right, Nick, what
are you hearing on your reading on your social media
channels here from fans about this trade.

Speaker 5 (16:11):
There seems to be a lot of excitement. There's there's
always gonna be the pessimist with this fan base, but
there seems to be a lot of excitement. Honestly, more
excitement than I expected. I thought there would be a
little bit more backlash from a Hey, we could have
gotten a guy that doesn't have the character concerns type approach.
But it seems that fans are pretty excited about this,
and rightfully so. I mean, like we talked about, from

(16:33):
a football aspect, this could really be a home run.

Speaker 4 (16:35):
And when's the last time they made a move like this.

Speaker 5 (16:38):
I can't even compare it to Stefan Gilmour from a
couple of years ago. It's on a different level, but yes,
I remember for sure, I remember a similar type of
response I guess to Sewan Gilmore because fans were really
excited about Gilmore. But not like this, not like this
is different. I gosh, the last time they made a
trade that Mary Cooper. Probably it would have to have
to be.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
I mean, this is And we have to remember so
many people love fantasy football and it becomes the whole thing.
They know who Pickings, They've seen him or they had
they know him. So it's like, okay, and that same
thing with you. How are you?

Speaker 2 (17:09):
How are you? How are your I never checked, you
never see what people are saying about it.

Speaker 5 (17:16):
It's a great approach.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Actually, and out here, mister, I'm mister, I'm too good
to call to write my fans.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
Me and Skiff, we don't follow anyone else. We only
care about our own opinions. No, I would say that
most people have reacted with enthusiasm about the fact that
the Cowboys have finally done something. Do they ridicule Jerry
as a matter of normal response as a general manager? Absolutely,
But I think for the most part people are excited
that they've made a move of some consequence.

Speaker 5 (17:44):
I'll say the approval rating of the Jones is up
right now?

Speaker 12 (17:46):
Is up?

Speaker 2 (17:47):
It is?

Speaker 3 (17:47):
It is up higher than Nico Harrisons.

Speaker 5 (17:49):
They have much higher Yes, would.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
You rather have gotten McMillan in the first round of
the draft and still had your third round pick next year?
Or would you rather have Pickens and Booker?

Speaker 3 (18:03):
I'm about Booker.

Speaker 5 (18:04):
Booker is the reason I say yes, I'm Booker is
the reason.

Speaker 3 (18:08):
I mean, it's one thing to draft a player like that,
but then when you see the kind of person he
is on top of that, oh yeah, throw me throw
me that in the locker room all day long. And
and when you heard guys talk about how Booker was
leading them during during this the rookie workouts here, stuff
like that. So he's he's coming in here. And you
had you had a college o see Bill, Bill O'Brien

(18:30):
on and he talked about how Bill told you before
you got here, he's going to go down there and
be a leader. So give me, give me someone like
that and a guy who comes out immediately the press conversation.
I'm looking forward to going up against Jalen Carr. So right.
I think, hey, man, who's.

Speaker 2 (18:44):
The best guy on the biggest rival in the league.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
Who's the guy swinging the biggest stick. Let me go
find that guy, you know, give me that prison mentality
in here, Who's who's who's running the yard? Let me
go find that guy. I'm all for it all day long.
So yeah, captain around here, give me give me Booker
and Pickens when you put I think.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
The only criticism or the primary criticism of the Booker
pick in the first round, beyond that he's not a
tackle and it's not a value position, is you didn't
address your number one concern, which was receiver, and now
they have.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
You've done that, so stay there. Ed This number two
concern was running back on they still need one team
that the okay that the head coach says you want.
So you're not satisfied, you don't like the room.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
If they could still get Bryce Young, I would or
not Bryce Young, Breese Hall, and I would do that
in a second for reasonable heist.

Speaker 5 (19:29):
I think the most pressing need in my opinion now
is one tech I think you got to go address
that one tech spot. Get you a veteran in there,
Just a veteran presence in case Mazzie Smith continues to
not work out.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
Uh, didn't they just draft two guys at that spot?

Speaker 5 (19:42):
Yeah, a seventh round Yeah.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
But they had a third round pick on one of them.

Speaker 5 (19:45):
Yeah, that's great, that's fair. That is fair. King Masote
ethical factor and more. Uh at the at the three
tech spot just given his size and ability. But Jay Toya,
I think he has a legitimate chance to take Mazzi's
job by the end of the season. If this is
this is now, We're never for Mozzie Smith, it is,
But I think throwing a veteran into that mix would
certainly help.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
Isn't that when they traditionally go see who's on the couch.

Speaker 5 (20:09):
One text are typically the ones on the couch.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
It's a horrible job, and the guys already retired from it,
you're gonna bring them back at the no camp, no
off season.

Speaker 5 (20:19):
I don't think Lynn Ball Joseph has had a camp.
It's like twenty fourteen.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
That's not an exactly right, it's cheatos fishing every now
and then. Huh what how much it's camp almost over?

Speaker 5 (20:30):
How much do you weigh Lynvall who worked that out?

Speaker 2 (20:33):
That's for me to know. And you to find out.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
Exactly, Jason Peters, I need to just kind of do
I need to work out a little bit on the side. Okay,
So so the running back room you're you're not satisfied with.

Speaker 2 (20:44):
So I think if they've got two third down specialists
and no real number one, number one running back and
if you're gonna run the football, like Brian Schottenheimer says,
is their priority, and that's what justifies to pick a Booker,
then and I think then you got to get somebody
at some point.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
Giving up your three and your five, well the five
with the five, yeah, twenty seven, So three and twenty six,
five and twenty seven. So do you give up your
annual fourth round pick for now?

Speaker 2 (21:18):
He suffered through that two years in a row.

Speaker 3 (21:23):
Do it three years in a row. I'm telling you,
I really want to see what Javonte Williams can do
in camp. I do I do because I feel like
running back is one of those positions that you can
get and make a trade for in camp.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
But the Broncos needed a running back after they traded him,
So why would they Why would Sean Payton get rid
of a running back if he needed a running.

Speaker 3 (21:43):
Back everybody's got their own you know, their own flavor,
and he may not like Javonte just doesn't fit me
what I want. Coaches can be that way at times.
And yes, we know Sean has done an outstanding job
with running backs and has a Super Bowl and he
knows how he knows how to use combinations. He's very good.

(22:04):
But I just got the feel he just wasn't his
cup of coffee and he wanted to go get his
cup of coff which he is Sean Payton and deserves
every right say hey, I want a guy like this
that way.

Speaker 2 (22:16):
And I'm just saying if Sean Payton has looked at
Javonte Williams and experienced him for two years and decided
after he led Denver and rushing both of those years
coming off the knee injury, if Sean Payton says I
need a better player, how does that make him a
starter in Dallas for a team that wants to run
the football.

Speaker 5 (22:34):
I think it's a valid point. I think he's probably
the leader in the clubhouse right now. Though if you're
guessing who's rolling out there on the first drive in
Week one, it's probably Javonte Williams. But Jaden Blue and
film offf a factor into this in a very fascinating
way too.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
If you can get what you got out of Rico Dowdell.

Speaker 4 (22:50):
But I'm not sure they have a runner like Dowdell.

Speaker 2 (22:53):
Who's the guy who's going to get the yards between
the tackles and get to the five and.

Speaker 4 (22:56):
Six yard runs?

Speaker 2 (22:57):
You don't believe in deuce one, oo's another agit player.

Speaker 3 (23:01):
A couple of turpen sweeps here and there. Look it's fast.

Speaker 5 (23:05):
Do you have another receiver to hand the ball off too?

Speaker 3 (23:07):
I mean this, this, this is the fascinating work that
at this point in time of you got.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
To I mean, they know what they want their offense
to look like. We don't, right, we haven't seen it yet,
so we have no we don't know. We just know
that he has talked about wanting to run the ball
and what he's wanted in a player at that position,
Miles Sanders and so far, I don't think it really
fits the kinds of personnality actually have.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
I mean, you but parcels will causing you got you
got some jags. Just a guy. They're just guys.

Speaker 2 (23:31):
And they had that last year and they got six
touchdowns with just those.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
Guys they did, and Jerry said the press conference he
thought it was more of the offensive line was the
reason why they had those issues than therefore the running back,
which Jerry basically said, in my opinion, hey man, we
can throw anybody on back here because if we have
a good line, they'll be okay.

Speaker 5 (23:51):
I think the difference last year is they had a jag.
This year they have jags. They have have you know what,
you're right, You're right, and that can allow for some
multiplicity that in the run game.

Speaker 3 (24:01):
Yeah, I mean who's I don't know who's got the
hot hand. I mean we saw Belichick and and his
offensive corning to Josh McDaniels figure that out for a
number of years. Here's James White at this point in time.
I mean they.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
Bring he didn't have any right.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
Got to bring up facts and Hall of Fame quarterback
or Patrick Mahomes in his cast of dude.

Speaker 5 (24:23):
So I don't know.

Speaker 2 (24:26):
I mean he he had Marshawn Lynch and they led
the league in rushing and I don't think they have
a running back who looks anything like that except the
rookie that they took late.

Speaker 5 (24:34):
From a physicality, Sam prank for the play style, So.

Speaker 3 (24:37):
There's still more work to do. Potentially, because Jerry did
this is big.

Speaker 2 (24:41):
Yes, I think Pickens is big, solves a big problem potentially.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
Arry Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:45):
In long term, he's only what twenty four to twenty five.

Speaker 3 (24:47):
Just turned twenty four, And I would say, if you're
a Cowboy fan, you wanted the wide receiver, dress first,
running back, figure it out, but the white receiver I
thought was the most most important, and they've done that.
They basically listen to what their fan base saying. We
got to see something, and.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
We've seen since the draft end that a lot of
teams going out and signing wide receivers. And when Dallas
wasn't involved in that, it made me think that Jerry
was really going to follow through on what he said
before the draft that they did have some substantive discussions
to acquire a receiver, and that's the way it played out.

Speaker 3 (25:23):
Let me ask this question to both of you, Amari Cooper,
Keenan Allen. They're both still out their free agents. Would
you take a.

Speaker 5 (25:30):
Stab knowing what they still need on this team looking
at their cap situation, I would go for some other
needs first, and if hey, Mark Cooper wants to come
here for five million dollars for one year rental. Have
at it, but I don't think that'll be the price
for him at the end of the day.

Speaker 2 (25:48):
Yeah, I would be surprised if they're still looking at
any of those veteran receivers. And both of them have
had issues with either the front office or a member
of the coaching staff. You know, because Keenan Allen played
for a couple of them Cowboys assistant coaches when he
was in Chicago.

Speaker 3 (26:02):
What's going through Jonathan Mingo's head right now?

Speaker 5 (26:04):
This is this is a good thing for Mingo. It
is it allows him to develop a little bit more
without being thrust into a role that he probably would
not have been ready for. I don't know if he
knows it, but this is a good thing for Mingo
in my opinion.

Speaker 2 (26:15):
I think it's a good thing for their entire room
because it puts them athletically and in terms of talent
in the order they should be in. Like Jalen Tolbert
had his best season last year, He's fine as a
three in my mind. Right, Turpin can come in and
contribute on occasion as a receiver, but doesn't have to
make all the splash plays at the position that Ceedee
Lamb doesn't make. So yeah, I think I think their
depth chart looks much better wide receiver now.

Speaker 5 (26:37):
Ryan flinnoy is probably the one that it doesn't be
because he's he's probably odd man out when you're looking
at roster cuts at this juncture.

Speaker 4 (26:43):
At least he had a great camp last year.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
I'm surprised you didn't contribute more during the regular season, right,
give me your give me your roster right now.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
If you had to just pick your guys.

Speaker 5 (26:51):
At receiver, obviously Lamb, Pickins, Turpin, Tolbert Brooks, does it
probably be your foe live because Brooks get I think
gives you more on special teams. That's that's the reason
I take Brooks.

Speaker 3 (27:04):
There any chance you think they take six.

Speaker 5 (27:07):
They could, I mean, it's certainly possibility. You would have
to take away from probably the tight end room. I
would have to imagine, uh, you know, does just shott
in Heimer carry four tight ends? Maybe not? Maybe that's
maybe that's your extra guy. And then in that case,
that's probably where flinoy sneaks in.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
Because they put on or two of those guys on
a practice squad.

Speaker 5 (27:26):
Oh for sure, I think Flinoy would safely make it
on a practice squad. Tree sha On Holden of course
would safely make it on a practice squad. Brooks would
as well. So yeah, that could give you some flexibility.
But once you're talking about Turp and Mango, those guys
definitely not you wouldn't be able to save on a
practice squad.

Speaker 3 (27:45):
Yeah. Look, this is this is going to be interesting
roster building and how they do it and what Brian
Schottenheimer and and and his his offensive coord and what
what they put together here. But they got a lot
of help today. They got a lot of help today,
And I think that Pickings should feel real good that

(28:06):
you're going to be in a We got a better
quarterback and you got help on the other side. You
can be looking for one on one coverage.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
Man and he can beat one on one and CD
can play the slot where he's the most dynamic slot
receiver in football, most productive slot receiver in football.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
Cowboys got better today? Will we say that?

Speaker 2 (28:24):
I I agree, substantially better potentially?

Speaker 3 (28:26):
Okay, all right, so wide receiver position one two Cowboys
feel good about Cowboy Fan feels good about it. As

Star and Fristco. Got word and it cares. I'm new,
he scrugs all right guys, Cowboys addressing the wide receiver position,
making and trade for George Pickens. We just ran through
the running back position here. What other work remains nick

(31:03):
for Steven Jones, Jerry Jones, and Will McLay.

Speaker 5 (31:07):
I think they need to prepare for the health of
the cornerback room to not be at one hundred percent
going into the season. You know, a veteran edition there
could certainly work. I don't know if trading for a
guy makes the most sense given that you're you've already
spent some draft capital with what we've been talking about
here today. But you know, if an opportunity presents itself,
why not. But I think at the very least go

(31:28):
and get a veteran corner just to elevate the competition.
I think they could use more numbers there. And then
I mentioned the one tech spot, getting a veteran in
that spot as well. Those would be the two biggest
for me running back. I would I if it were me,
I would see what happens early on in camp. I
would see what happens in the preseason and if they,
if they, if I'm the coaching staff and I feel
like I need to go get another guy, Darien camp,

(31:50):
then I'll go do that and I'll go I'll go
seek out that opportunity. But I'm gonna let these four
guys run and see see if something comes about with it.

Speaker 2 (31:57):
Yeah, I kind of agree with Nick on the quarterback
situation still being unresolved, not only who's going to be
healthy and when, but who's going to play aware like
who's going to be the slot corner. Now, maybe Matt
Eberflus already knows all this as far as you know
how they're going to start camp, but they do have
some injuries they've got to work through and some young
players that they've got to evaluate and get better than

(32:20):
they were last year. But yeah, I think the cornerback
situation has been kind of overlooked by the fans in general.
I mean, I think the defense in general like has
been was It was a horrific part of their failure
last year, and a lot of it was injuries. But
they've they've made a lot of moves on defense in
free agency and a few in the draft that could

(32:41):
be really meaningful. But that was a really bad defensive
football team last year.

Speaker 5 (32:45):
Let's say what. We have a schedule release coming out
next week we'll know who the Cowboys are playing every
single week of the season. If you look at those
first four games and you see some big time passing
threats receiving threats, it would surprise me if this team
makes it a little bit more urgent to go ahead
and get another corner, because you have to prepare for
the event that Trayvon Diggs and or Savone Reville are
not ready to start the season.

Speaker 3 (33:05):
I am curious to see if they end up with
Philadelphia early on.

Speaker 2 (33:10):
Jerry wants from week one, right in the first I mean, look,
it's Jerry and his guy, Tyler Booker. They both want
the Eagles.

Speaker 3 (33:19):
So the way NBC has done this thing the past
couple of years, the Cowboys who've usually been they usually
get the Cowboys in the first three weeks. Somehow, someway
they get them in. They will get them in. And
it's a lot of times it's been the Giants, and
the Giants, you know, the past decade have been good
enough that they could put that matchup on TV. But

(33:40):
Philadelphia Dallas, two big media markets, you know, I could
see it, and remember they had them, they did Tampa
two years in a row. You know, when when Tampa
was defending Super Bowl champions and then the next year
they did it again.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
So they also like to save the big division games
for late in the year.

Speaker 3 (33:59):
So you get three NBC games, and the Cowboys are
always playing one in September and playing one early and
because they didn't, they missed the playoffs last year. The
kind of trick I see how they work it is
they try to get him in early so they don't
get flexed. If they're a playoff team. I think they'll
be a playoff team, then you'll see, you know, you'll
see a November game, but if not, they'll try to

(34:21):
get something September October and then try to maybe hit
something again.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
And you know, real got to see if Aaron Rodgers
is playing first, so you know how many times to
put the Steelers on, you.

Speaker 3 (34:31):
Know ed it's not a crazy thought, and they're going
to be on one time definitely for sure on Sunday
Night Football. But I'm sure, I'm pretty sure they've already
got that game done, ready to go, and it's probably
going to be a Cincinnati or Baltimore game some you know,
a divisional game where you know, if Aaron Rodgers isn't

(34:53):
there Burrow is there, Lamar Jack. They got something to sell.
They're they're pretty, they're pretty stealth and doing things like that.
But I would definitely say look for the Cowboys here
within the first three weeks on Sunday Night football. Don't
be surprised if it is Thursday at Philadelphia, And if
it's not Thursday against Philly, it could be a Sunday
game Divisional. I mean, I'm thinking Washington and Philly. I

(35:14):
mean one of the two will be on Sunday Night Football.
They're definitely going to do it. It's not going to
be the Giants because the Giant's been bad this shoe.
But bet your bottom dollar there will be a Sunday
night football game between the Cowboys in either Philly or.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
Washing So if it's Philly, do they have to go
get a corner? Like we talked about Gilmore being out
here when the Cowboys are having their draft press conference
and they've been in touch with him, in contact with him.

Speaker 5 (35:35):
Yeah, yeah, it's a fascinating one. I say, why not. Yeah,
you can't have too much depth there, And I think
Gilmore's at a point in his career where if and
when Diggs and Revel do get healthy and they step
in and are able to start, then Gilmore would probably
take a back seat. But also you could have Gilmour
start and let Revel really ease into the situation and

(35:57):
you know, not really have to call on him unless
there's an injury or until his his second year b
And it.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
Wouldn't wouldn't be a bad idea to have him influencing
your rookie.

Speaker 5 (36:05):
Absolutely absolutely.

Speaker 3 (36:06):
That was the next thing I was gonna say. If
there's a guy you want talking to people right there,
it's a guy like Gilmore, and even a guy like
Gilmore to talk to someone like Pickens to say, hey, look,
you know how to be a professional, how to prolong
your career, because I mean, we all saw how much
respect he garnered. I mean, even what Diggs was talking
about changing his diet, and usually you know, your young
guys wait till later on, but he just saw what

(36:28):
what you know, Hey, look man, whatever it takes. But
I'm big on that. That's just me, that's just my person.

Speaker 4 (36:35):
I'm waiting till later on, just my diet.

Speaker 3 (36:38):
And you look beautiful. When you do, you're gonna look
like a donna. She's looking great right now, does Gilmour
live around here.

Speaker 5 (36:45):
I am I am unsure, okay, I am much. I
do know that that visit to the Star that we
saw that day, it was there's some there's a lot
of businesses that are on that side of the Star
and that's that's that's what that was in relation to.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
Okay, so we'll see.

Speaker 5 (36:58):
No, I say, bring him in again and for for
real visit.

Speaker 2 (37:01):
We'll see.

Speaker 3 (37:01):
Hey, look, I I'm a I'm a fan of the play.
When they talk about culture and talk about that, that's
what you.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
Want, professionalism, the epitome of that.

Speaker 3 (37:11):
Yes, and I like the idea of what you're saying. Okay, hey,
Digs revel maybe not ready to go. Put Gilmour in here,
get him going, and then all right, we kind of
lessen the reps a little bit and keep him a
little bit fresher during the year because.

Speaker 2 (37:25):
They started seven or eight corners last year, right, I mean,
that's that's how many corners you need from recent experience,
like starting pitchers.

Speaker 3 (37:32):
In baseball, you can't have enough of them. You just
can't have enough of him.

Speaker 2 (37:35):
So, and he's an older guy, but he played well
for you, and he played started fifteen games in Minnesota.

Speaker 3 (37:39):
Last year in a division where they got some really
good receivers. There's some real good receivers in this league,
and you got two good quarterbacks, Rookie of the Year
and a Super Bowl MVP.

Speaker 1 (37:47):
So I.

Speaker 3 (37:49):
Yeah, I would. I would bring in Gilmore for five mil.
Before I'd paint Cooper five million dollars. I agree, I
would do that, and look that way. But there's they
are in a position right now that they're better than
they were this off seat, in my opinion's better than
what last year's off season was. They ought. Last year,
they kind of lied themselves a little bit a lot.

(38:12):
They lied to themselves a lot. They didn't do that
this offseason, and so I look at what they've done
here and I said, Okay, these are some positives and
we'll see what else they can do.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
Well, what do we say when when they hired Brian
Schoenheimer was Okay, you're taking a risk hiring You're the
only team that's hiring from within, promoting from within at
the head coaching position. You just fired a coach who
won twelve games three years in a row. You got
to you got to back this decision up. You got
to help him a chance to succeed, help him, and
it seems like they've taken that approach.

Speaker 5 (38:40):
I think I wrote a column the day of Schottenheimer's
introductory press conference and the headline was literally, yes, they
are taking a risk and hiring Brian Schottenheimer. They are
going to have to take more for him to succeed,
and I would say that they've done that so far
this offseason.

Speaker 2 (38:53):
If you write the headlines, I do.

Speaker 5 (38:56):
I do, and I'm one writer in America rights headline
I do. It's on you.

Speaker 3 (39:00):
Just send a little recommendation. If you're McCarthy, are you
ticked off? You're like, look at all this?

Speaker 5 (39:05):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, I'm pissed off. I'll see it.

Speaker 3 (39:09):
Now you have moved Jerry's They buried me, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (39:13):
Giving this guy out this name.

Speaker 2 (39:14):
They did nothing to help me coming off a twelve
win season. Yeah, they keep my job.

Speaker 3 (39:19):
Yeah yeah, yeah, sink or swim and he say.

Speaker 2 (39:22):
So now I'm out of the whole league again.

Speaker 3 (39:26):
Back on TV, though, you know, he did some decent
draft work.

Speaker 4 (39:29):
Lost his quarterback twice five years.

Speaker 5 (39:33):
It's tough. That's tough. Yeah, yeah it is. But man, also,
I will throw out there though that I think Schottenheimer
is using his influence a lot more than McCarthy did
and the roster construction standpoint of things. Did did the
front office do him any favors? Absolutely not. But I
think Schottenheimer is using this influence that he has as
the head man in this building a little bit more

(39:55):
than the McCarthy did.

Speaker 2 (39:56):
And every time he speaks publicly, I think you get
a sense of how he talked Jerry into making change
and selecting him.

Speaker 3 (40:02):
Look, we've been on no offense. NICKI. You're young, and
we love you.

Speaker 5 (40:08):
I respect.

Speaker 3 (40:09):
We've seen a couple of these guys around him. We've
seen a few of these coaches around here.

Speaker 5 (40:13):
Why you can't buy in until the field happens, until
they get on the field.

Speaker 3 (40:17):
From a presence standpoint, we haven't had a head coach
with as as much present since Bill Parcells. Campbell wasn't
like that, Jason wasn't like that, and McCarthy wasn't those
last three guys.

Speaker 2 (40:30):
You're killing Somebody told me this week out here, says
he reminds me a lot of Jason Garrett, only is tougher,
and he set himself at his press conference right. I
don't have a problem with disciplining players. I can discipline
players good.

Speaker 4 (40:45):
Good start.

Speaker 3 (40:49):
Well, when he talks about he's about relationships. So clearly
he's going to have to develop a relationship with Pickings
wide receiver because in core, they're all going to have
to put in and we're in here and just find out.
You look back at it.

Speaker 2 (41:02):
I just I saw a clip of a play when
he was with Georgia and it was the same thing.
He's fighting some guy on the field, an opponent from
Tennessee on the field, grabbing him by the face mask,
throwing him down down the ground. I mean, the guy's
constantly on the border being ejected.

Speaker 6 (41:18):
Man.

Speaker 3 (41:18):
Antonio Antonio Brian just came back into my mind of
just here was a guy who had talent and was
his own worst enemy in not achieving that talent. And
you know, eventually went from here to San France and
it was out of the league. And you know, people
forget he wore the eighty eight.

Speaker 5 (41:36):
That is also goes for Antonio Brown, who when he
left Pittsburgh. I don't think we realized that the issues
that he had in Pittsburgh were only the tip of
the iceberg, because then he goes to New England, he
goes to Tampa and those problems just explode. You hope
history doesn't tell us that that's going to happen with
another Pittsburgh receiver where he gets out of Pittsburgh and
you realize, like, damn, Pittsburgh was really holding this guy.

Speaker 4 (41:58):
They really managed it.

Speaker 5 (41:59):
Yeah, actually manage him really well.

Speaker 3 (42:01):
But Mike Tomlins made us some dudes. He's managed some
interesting characters up there in Pittsburgh, man, And yeah, to
see them leave, I mean a lot of the guys,
especially from a receivers tame point. Remember Mike Wallace was
the guy before Antonio Brown turns down the contract and
they get rid of him and they give that money
Antonio Brown and becomes becomes a star. But yeah, he's
dealt with that. And then early on when Roethlisberger was

(42:23):
dealing with all his issues and Tomlin Le'Veon Bell, Le'Veon Bell,
I mean, gosh, she's on a lot of them.

Speaker 5 (42:29):
Yeah, like I said, Aaron Rodgers, here we go.

Speaker 3 (42:32):
You know, if there's a dude made Franon Rodgers, it's Tomlin.
And you think about Antonio Brown put together a Hall
of Fame career. I don't think he's getting in but
he put together a resume that they should probably have
to debate and you would know best. You may have
to debate about it. Roethlisberger, they will have to debate
about it. And Bell basically shot his career all.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
Love it all.

Speaker 3 (42:52):
You know everybody who left there who wanted out of there.
You never saw them reach that level again like they
did in Pittsburgh, which is kind of one thing concerned
for me. It's like, you know, there's two people I
don't know if you want them trading with you. It's
Mike Tomlin, Andy Reed. They're not giving away the good stuff.
They're not. They usually are on the winning side of
these deals.

Speaker 5 (43:12):
The history would throw a red flag one percent.

Speaker 4 (43:15):
The red challenge flag is out. George Pickens.

Speaker 3 (43:18):
Yeah, if you say, hey, some disgruntled receivers who've left Pittsburgh,
how's that worked out? Hasn't worked out? That that that
came into my mind. But this is this is the
work to me of what Brian Schottenheira has to do
as a head coach.

Speaker 2 (43:31):
Jnio Brown or Tavius Brian Chase, Claypool, Deontay Johnson and
now George Pickens all traded receivers traded by the Steelers.

Speaker 5 (43:38):
We see how Deontay Johnson has become a headache as
well since leaving Pittsburgh.

Speaker 3 (43:44):
Our TV's Brian came down here for half a second
and it didn't work out. Yeah, yeah, that's good one
it Yeah. Uh, but.

Speaker 5 (43:56):
That's a tough list to be a part of. That's
a tough list to be a part that it.

Speaker 2 (44:00):
But George Choms can change the narrative on failed stealer
receivers like Tomlin reje.

Speaker 5 (44:06):
One difference is he's a lot younger and he's still
on his rookie deal. And I don't think this was
Pittsburgh giving up on Pickens. I think this was Pittsburgh
wanting to move off of Pickens. I think there's a
difference there because they got DK Metcalf, they got their
outside guy, and they bring in Robert Woods and they're.

Speaker 2 (44:21):
Expecting DK Metcalf's not been easy to manage either, and
they chose him over and some money over this guy.

Speaker 5 (44:27):
And they're expecting a year two jump from Roman Wilson
as well. So I think it just made sense for
them to move off with the impending headache that was
coming this this offseason.

Speaker 3 (44:35):
Tom I keep asking for it, doesn't he Metcalfe and Rogers.

Speaker 5 (44:39):
Toughest battles to the strongest soldiers.

Speaker 3 (44:44):
In that division, where seemingly the Ravens got a lot
better than the draft. So all right, so as we
get ready to shut down the show, here, did the
Cowboys gain ground on Philly and Washington ed yes or.

Speaker 4 (44:58):
No with this one move?

Speaker 3 (44:59):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (44:59):
Yes, yes, Okay?

Speaker 2 (45:01):
Ow overall off season, I don't know about Washington. Washington's
made some moves and Philly Philly, you could say maybe
because Philly was so far in front of them based
on the scores last year and based on what they
did in the postseason. But they lost what five, five
or six key defensive players, now that they lost them
the year before too, and they overcame it. But there's

(45:24):
a reason they drafted five defensive players at the start
of the draft this year.

Speaker 3 (45:29):
Washington addressed their left tackle.

Speaker 2 (45:30):
Got a receiver, and they got another tackle.

Speaker 3 (45:33):
So I mean, I look at Washington's done, and then saying,
you know, they're they're doing the right stuff, which I
think kind of put the Cowboys episode. They had to
make this train. You had to do something because you're
watching the two teams ahead of you make moves.

Speaker 5 (45:46):
Don't forget about the Giants. They're making up ground too that.

Speaker 3 (45:51):
You know what, Their defense is definitely good. The quarterback
still scares me.

Speaker 5 (45:54):
Yeah, absolutely, as it should.

Speaker 3 (45:56):
And if you can't get that right, good luck in
this division with with the kinds of defensive players in
this division. So that's why I look at the Giants like,
you know, they might be able to win some games,
but outside this division and then having to go up
against the AFC West is going to be tough too.
But they can win some games, but it's gonna be tough, sletting,

(46:16):
because this thing keeps getting better and better from a
defensive standpoint. In this division, you got some some really
good football players and some and some donkunk I mean,
think about some of the coordinators in this division.

Speaker 5 (46:26):
It's it's it's impressive.

Speaker 3 (46:27):
Yeah, yeah, some really good defensive coordinators in this thing.
Edwarder Man, thanks the cares. Appreciate you do. We scrutched
Chris bean Man, John Josh you back there, Jazz, he's
gone so so Jazz. Good luck to you wherever you're
at there. We appreciate it. Rolling with you.

Speaker 5 (46:43):
She's a Puerto Rico I saw her in Puerto Rico
over the weekend, so she uh, living our best life.

Speaker 4 (46:49):
You don't mean you were also in Puerto Rico.

Speaker 5 (46:52):
On the social media assess pool that I engage with
way too much.

Speaker 3 (46:56):
Yeah, yeah, I saw a company saw you.

Speaker 4 (46:58):
Shut him down last night.

Speaker 3 (46:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (47:01):
I was wondering if I should reach out to some
Steelers people when I saw when I was starting hearing this,
then I read Nick saying it's not happening to leave
me alone.

Speaker 5 (47:07):
I was trying to watch the Warriors game. I'm a
big Jimmy Butler guy. We might, we might let her
over the course of time. I was just trying to
watch the game, and I had heard two weeks ago. Yeah,
we've talked about this, talks of stalk and I'm like,
it's not happening, guys, just let me watch the game.
And then sure enough I get a phone call about
eleven thirty at night, and here we are, live and learn. Yeah, yeah,
we're still reading.

Speaker 3 (47:28):
No matter what. I appreciate you. We shall see you
next week.
