Speaker 1 (00:03):
The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com
and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Cowboys. This is media match, a roundtable of Cowboys insiders,
trump wisdom, and offering sizzling takes on the current state
of your Dallas Cowboys. Now your host, Newie Scrugs here
we are everybody, media match coming your way. What an
(00:29):
exciting week here in Dallas foot or sports overall. Cowboys
and the NFL released their scheduled yesterday. Day before that
the Stars end up winning Game three, so that one
went away from the Western Conference finals. And then before
that we got Nico Magic Dallas Mavericks winning lottery.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Man, it's a.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Good time to live in this area. Man, it is
a good time to be a sportsman in this area
right now. Yes, I agree with that, and the schedule
release is very cool. So Tommy Yrs Dallas Cowboys Com
joint is right now. The author former columnist see Jean
Jack Taylor covered the Cowboys beat for many years. I
am new Scrugs here on this media match. The Cowboys
get their three NBC games as always the match to
(01:14):
the max. You can get so three on NBC. They're
on Monday Night Football twice they play four Thursday games. Jack,
I can't recall the last time they had four Thursday games.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Don't think they had four.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Nobody's ever had four Thursday games.
Speaker 5 (01:27):
Right, But they're not real Thursday games even though they're
on Thursday, because like the opener, you got the you
got all something to get ready for it, and then
you're playing the Thursday after you play on Thanksgiving, so
you got a full.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Week to get ready for that.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
So while they are on Thursday, it's only two with
short west christ and one of them ruins Christmas.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
If you if you are of.
Speaker 5 (01:46):
That nature, now see me, you know this about number
five or six on Christmas Day.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
So it just is what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
And with the meal it comes with me. But so
we talked a little bit about this on the players Lounge.
That challenge of a Christmas Day game on the road
is you're now traveling on Christmas Eve.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Oh they got you both. Now, they took out both days.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Now it's like a seventeen split though, and you're working
Thanksgiving Day as usual. So and just how you how
you navigate it. And that's a and in talking to
Anthony Doors said, and talking to Trey Morris, players. How
do you do this because on a football team you
have so many different types of place. You got young
guys who going through that, you got married guys, and
(02:29):
you got older veteran guys and you know that handling
it and then of course the family thing that goes
with it.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
The young guys don't care because they're gonna fly whoever
into into DC. Old guys with families. Depending howage of
kids are, if they two or three, you may not
be so bad Day seven to eight.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, as a.
Speaker 5 (02:46):
Problem spoken from experience, right, what makes it, what makes
it tougher is that's one of the two weeks where
it is a short week.
Speaker 6 (02:55):
Right where they only where they only have I think
you know John Jock brought it up where there's one
where they've got Thursday week. It's just in terms of
like they go Thursday and then they get a week
off before the next Thursday game, so it's.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
Not really a short week.
Speaker 6 (03:08):
And then the season opener is you know, you get
a long break in between week one and week two.
So that is what makes it difficult because you think
they're traveling on not only are they traveling on Christmas Eve,
but they really only get two days. They got Monday
and Tuesday to a short premp of week and even
shorter prep week because you're going on the road.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
So that's what's going to make it tough.
Speaker 6 (03:29):
And of course they're also playing two teams that made
the playoffs last year in Los Angeles on Sunday and
then the Commanders on Thursday.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
So that's going to be a tough stretch.
Speaker 6 (03:37):
And it's part of that back end of those last
stretch of games from week twelve to seventeen, where's just
a gauntlet all teams that made the playoffs. It's the
good thing they get some of them at home, but man,
it's a tough stretch.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
So Tommy, let's kind of stay right here in that
second Thursday game because Jack can think you're correct, all right.
First game September fourth, it's you know, all summer long,
what you got to do, right, and you get ready
for that first That next Thursday game is Thanksgiving. Well
you have to play Philadelphia at least you get him
at home, but you play Philly November twenty third, and
you got to turn around and face Kansas City. So
(04:11):
you got Super Bowl teams right here. So you know,
when you're talking about that.
Speaker 7 (04:14):
Man.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
That's that's the intensity of just like, hey, here's what's
going on. Man. Those are two tough matchups. And then
for your second Thursday game, which will be on Christmas,
you got to go take on the LA Chargers. It's
at home, but still a Jim harball team is going
to be physical.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
That's what I was thinking, you know, the same physical football.
Speaker 5 (04:34):
Same thing when you're talking about the Eagles going into
Kansas City.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
It's a divisional game.
Speaker 5 (04:38):
At that point, you still hope that you expect them
to be playing for some so it's going to be
a meaningful game. So it's going to be high energy,
high intensity, very physical. And then you got to come
up out of that and play Kansas City. And so
you know, I'm with you man on the thing with
the Commanders, because we all know how bos He's going.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
To be running at twelve personnel this year.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
He got the big back.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Of Marion Hampton. He can really lean on you. So,
I mean that's what Jim Harbo does.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
So you had you had best expected to what's a
coach you used to say, buckle up the chin strap.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
That's gonna be all day.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, this is so just looking at how the schedules
kind of set up here and looking at these games, man,
these are these are these are touch challenges and the
schedule is we knew it was going to be a
challenge for the Cowboy team having to face the AFC
West and the NFC North. You just knew that these
were these were probably the two toughest divisions outside of
(05:31):
your own that you had to go face. And so
this this twenty twenty five schedule, looking at based off
last year's results, we know every year it's going to change.
It's it ain't.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Easy, no, I think the Uh.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
And I was arguing with you know, our favorite former member,
Clarency Hill Jr.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
About this earlier.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
You know, four to six on the road to start
sounds daunting, but if you are who you're supposed to be,
you got to be able to beat the Bears, just
the Panthers, and theoretically Cowboys in the last few years
have been a good road team.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
They've been silid.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
They haven't been one of those teams as scared to
play on the road or camp function on the road,
and so they have to make up they had to
start fast. Uh, that's I mean, we can use that
latest Seguay to get into quick playing with Michael because
you don't need him spending the first month getting right
because he didn't head out out.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Of the camp.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
They need to start fast because that end he's gonna
be filthy.
Speaker 6 (06:26):
Yeah, that's that's the key part to the season, right
those first nine games. Can you go into the buy
six and three? I think maybe you could even make
an argument of.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
Five and four.
Speaker 6 (06:37):
Do you feel like that's gonna be enough to position
you for that back half of the season where it's
just grueling. I mean, you look at the Raiders, that's
the team that you know after that long of a
bye because they get an.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Extra day with it being a Monday night football game.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
You that's that's the.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
Game where you got to go on the road and win.
Speaker 6 (06:52):
But where I think the Cowboys in that backstretch last season,
we were just so surprised that they were not as
good as they were at home. I mean, yes stretch
where they won what was it, sixteen straight games at home?
And you know the good part about that that murderers
row that we were talking about is they get four
of those games at AT and T Stadium in Philly.
Kansas City, Minnesota, and La. So you know that's that's
(07:15):
the advantage of it. But then you go on the
road at Detroit. I mean, that's just a brutal game
that you got to play right after you play the
two teams have played in the Super Bowl. But you know,
Minnesota they lost their quarterback, you got an unknown and
JJ McCarthy a lot of changes on the defensive side
of the ball too. What is that going to look like?
The Chargers got one of the perfect fits I think
(07:36):
in the draft in Amari and Hampton in terms of
what Jim Harbass trying to do.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Correct.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
So now what O is out there?
Speaker 5 (07:42):
And I was kicking this around by Detroit, Well, Detroit
take a step back because they lost both coordinators.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
So I guess you and I have known each other
too long because that was the exact thing that I
was coming to when Tommy brought up here. You know what,
how do you make the adjustment because two guys are gone.
The last time we saw that, you know, just really
specifically in the NFC East was when Philly lost both guys.
When when they lost their coach in Indianapolis, Styking goes
(08:09):
to indian then gann and goes out there to Arizona
and they took a step back.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
I mean, especially because Ben Johnson one of the best
offensive coordinators in the league. So you just can't say,
next man up, we're gonna run it. It ain't gonna
work like that. So it'll be interesting. Now this is
later in the years, so whatever adjustments and difficulties they
may have had, they may.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Have ironed them out by then. But it's interesting.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
And I think, like, I don't expect the Vikings to
win fourteen games this year.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
You know, J. J. McCarthy's a rookie.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
He's basically he's going to go through whatever rookie problems
rookie quarterbacks have.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Regressing to the mean usually takes place. And we know
per NFL schedule.
Speaker 5 (08:46):
See that's why you know somebody got an NBA when
they used the proper terminology to mean. Yes, I don't
throw out my Big ten education like I don't have to,
but sometimes I understand TC you want to throw out
that yeah means to okay, so good, we're gonna talk
about macro Microme to micro contract.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Now, no, no, but we we just know every year
there's gonna be you know, we're gonna have a boatload
of teams that don't make it, you know, just we look,
it's gonna be five or six teams who made it
last year not gonna make it.
Speaker 6 (09:18):
But do you feel like with the Lions their personnel,
especially on offense, makes it kind of like, Okay, anybody
can be the offensive coordinator when you've got Jamior Gibbs,
I'm and Ross Saint Brown and Sam Laporta, and obviously
you've got to be able to do certain things the
right young time defensive twenty one.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
See, this is what I'm talking about. Man, smell like
similec over there. That's what babies be.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Drake.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
You know who said those very words one time?
Speaker 4 (09:43):
Who said that?
Speaker 3 (09:46):
Jerry Jones said that one time.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
I'm just saying, I'm any one of five hundred offensive
coordinators can run the lines off any any one.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Comes to team.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
That's a good point.
Speaker 6 (09:58):
But I'm saying, does that does that does their grouping
or personnel make it more seamless in terms of the transition?
Speaker 5 (10:03):
Okay, I haven't give you one mom and then I'm
gonna quit being a funny guy. You know, and in
a lot of respects, Dave Shula had the same off
as North Turner with Dave Shula, nobody heard of them,
triplets with North Turner, we win the Super Bowls and
drinking down Peron Ryan.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
It is.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
It's never as easy as people think, like because.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
If they can replace you downe in Austin man like,
it's like that no.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
More than no, no, no no, you don't get yourself
enough credit.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
You don't get yourself enough credit.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
There will be an adjustment because anybody, I mean, it's
just like with Shoddy, He's got his own ideas. So
whoever you bring your next gonna have their own ideas.
And we saw you look at the last three coordinators
that that Philadelphia had offensively, all three guys were very
different and the results, you know, two times they went
to the super Bowl, one time they didn't. So this
(10:58):
is going to be a ask for Detroit. How much
it matters, we'll see, But I do believe there's something
to that. I'm with Jack on this. This This is
it's different because everybody.
Speaker 5 (11:13):
Some of it is just how you like, we got
the weapons, we got the pieces. Some of it is
just how you set the game up and call it right.
You know, how I tricked you in the first quarter
so I can bust you in the third and the
fourth quarter.
Speaker 6 (11:25):
And I agree with you, guys. That's why I was
posing the question. I know, like, how much how much
of a difference does it make when? Because I think
defensively that's where you're gonna see the change for them
because they were so banged up last year. You don't
know what Aiden Hutchinson is going to come back and
look like too. And you know how just Terry on
Arnold take the next step. Can he stop getting flags
thrown on him every time that they go downfield on him?
And so that that would be my thing, just offensively,
(11:47):
when you've got so many great pieces, does that make it? Again,
nothing's gonna be seamless because it's different off. But exactly
that's more what I was looking.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
I've learned not to do that, right, to do that
because they're gonna be good.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
It's just matter will they be Last year they were elite,
so will they be nish or will they be elite?
Speaker 2 (12:05):
And they've been a leak the last years and it's
just the nature of the NFL just doesn't let's just
stay on top very long. So you know, what Kansas
City's done has been remarkable. What we saw with New England.
That's why their dynasties and they've got quarterbacks that going
to Hall of Fame.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
Those are both great examples because they both had great
coach of great quarterbacks. Because part of the reason you
can't part of the reasons hard to sustain, sustain sussistant,
part of the reasons all these teams flip in the
playoffs every year. Number one is the schedule, but number
two is there are all these one score games and
so this year we made two plays. Last next year
we don't make the two plays, and so we lose
(12:39):
twenty seven to twenty three instead of winning thirty one
to twenty seven.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
And oh, by the way, it's not just extillions people.
Oh okay, yeah, we got them coming to town here.
I mean Cowboys lines on Prime video Thursday. You know
they've made They've gone out of their way to say, hey, look,
this is a prime game. We need to talk about
this and get into it. So, man, I'm I would
(13:04):
not be surprised. It's just me if we saw the Packers,
you know, take another step. With Ben Johnson being with
the Bears, they should be they should be better offensively, and.
Speaker 5 (13:16):
They loaded up in an offseason for them. They've had
a lot of weapons pieces. But see the good thing
for me, if you're Dallas, you catch them early as
opposed to catching them later when they've had time to
integrate everything they want to do.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Right, he knows what to do. Everybody understands the system.
So so I think about just when I think of Detroit.
If Chicago takes a step and gets better as they should,
and the Packers do, and as Minnesota aggresses to the me,
I think Detroit will see the same thing. I mean,
it's just it's just a nature. It's the nature of football,
you know, it's just the nature of the division. We
saw last year with the Cowboys. So and I also
(13:49):
say this, you know, you took over for Nick. Your
stories and what you're producing is differently what Nick did
for Doubts. That was that kind because it's just you're
just different people. You're both creative and you're doing your
own thing. But you're gonna bring You're gonna bring your
spin to it and how you're gonna do it. It's
gonna be different than Knicks. And and so that that
to me is when it comes to calling plays and
all that kind of staff man that stuff matters, his
coordinated and then how do you and this is the
(14:11):
beauty of what North Turnedy. Norv knew how to communicate
in a way Shula just didn't do. Even as Shula
left the Cowboys and became the head coach of the Bengals,
nor just has this ability to connect with people. And
then you just kind of look throughout his career how
many running backs have had the Norv touch man from
lt with the Chargers and Ricky Williams in Miami and
(14:33):
Frank Gored with the forty nine Ers. Mean, nor just
had this thing where he could communicate with with offenses
and backs and go next level. And I think Ben Johnson,
I'm expecting Ben Johnson to make make Chicago better.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
Yeah, the Bears are going to be really good this year.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
I think.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
I mean, if he'sa.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
And that's and that's it, and and so how quickly
does he do it? That's the next thing too, because
this head coaching thing is is interesting. H it's very interesting.
I ain't the biggest fan of the Philly coach, but
he's good. But he's good, and I remember he got
hammered his first year. They made the playoffs his first
(15:12):
year he's grown and he's gotten good and now he's
got super Bowl rings. So we'll see, we'll see where
it goes. Man, this is fun stuff. All right, Let's
hit our first break in here. I want to go
into this first game because it's at Philly. Is this
an advantage to get them right out of the gate
(15:35):
and now you know what you're going to do the
rest of the summer. Let's do this next with Tommy Jack.
I'm new he this is the media mash On Dallas got.

Mash media Mash sponsored by nobody. Right here on Dallas
Cowboys that come on Louie Scrubs, Catchack Taylor, got Tommy
Yards here breaking down this Cowboys schedule as it's been released.
We know exactly what they're gonna do. Three games on NBC,
we got four Thursday games, two games on Monday Night football. Basically,
(18:07):
the Cowboys are doing all the big games there right now,
and it's it's pretty interesting. There's only four noon games
and five five.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
But I love a noon game.
Speaker 10 (18:23):
Man.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
The this this is gonna be the Sunday game, the
Chargers noon game. I wonder if that doesn't get flipped.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
No, Fox, it might. It wouldn't surprise me if you did.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Yeah, because I'm expecting Jim Harbor to be good. I'm
expecting this good, be a good football team.
Speaker 11 (18:43):
You know.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
And so so that's one I could see. I uh,
the the other the others are going to be early
in the year. The Giants is a noon game on Fox.
The Giants bad. The Jets they're bad too. That's a
noon game October fifth, and then after that it's a
new game against Carolina Panthers October twelfth to Charlotte. So
I could see those three games staying at noon, but
(19:05):
I could see the Charger game get flipped in the course.
The Thursday game will stay at noon. Thursday, December twenty fifth,
Christmas Day.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Because you know, say that was Jesus Birthday.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Well, you know, they got their slot. And actually, if
i'm the Cowboys, give me the noon game so I
can go ahead and play the game game, get on home.
Speaker 5 (19:23):
Yeah you know right, yeah right, I mean, if you
got to play that, that's what you'd rather do, Like, hey, hey,
because they'll be home by seven o'clock.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
You know there's no overtime. Just get it done and
move on.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Oh no, there's no overtime. You didn't know that. Christmas
Day you go for two, no t no extra football
for y'all.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
We got the three twenty five game to get to
Netflix's gonna make it.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Yes, yes, So they opened the season September fourth at Philadelphia.
The Cowboys have done this recently. When Tom Brady and
the Buccaneers were World champions, they went down to Tampa,
played the game, close game. The Cowboys kicker was terrible
as airline and uh, anyway, I was there for that day,
Like really, I mean it's like to go through you
(20:09):
spend all this time at camp getting yourself ready to go,
your kicker go out here and do this.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
I mean it was a good kicker, was That's what
I'm saying. It's not like it was some rookie.
Speaker 5 (20:17):
You didn't expect to do it. So we got a
veterans sell the guy, and then you got what you got.
Speaker 10 (20:22):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Sort a real thing for them, dude.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
For kickers, hey, when they get in that it's it's
hard to get.
Speaker 5 (20:28):
When they get two three left, it's like onto the
next one. They ain't pulling out of that.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Bones Fossil was that whole year, kept trying to dig.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
Even we've seen it around here, Chris Bon Chris Richie
cunning Richie Richie Cunningham.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
Like was like ninety eight percent for like three years,
and then it was gold.
Speaker 5 (20:50):
Thing was left fell off, fell and Bailey Bailey mist
automatic for like six and a half years and then everything.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
So you're right when they when.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
One slide, it just slide and it becomes mental. Then
they can never get it back. And so enjoying the
current guy you have for as long as you can
have him.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
Yeah, as long as he's kicking him from eighty yards out.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Because when it goes, it goes. And then John John
Fossil compared it to a golfer. It is and you say,
hey man, once as goes, it goes. I mean, I
think about Jordan Speed for a minute there. George was
the hottest. David David duvall Man, I could go there.
I mean, they're playing No, I never never doubted.
Speaker 11 (21:31):
You on that.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
They're playing a PGA to day out in Charlotte, North Carolina,
but you know, it's like, oh yeah, Jorge p because
I did the Nelson a couple of weeks back and
it was also Scottie Scheffer's amazing. But oh yeah, Jordan's here.
Oh yeah yeah, cool cold product, baby, cold cold product here.
So Eagles September four, the Vegas has the Cowboys. It's
(21:52):
seven point underdogs. Right now, tell me, in your opinion,
how much does it help the Cowboys possibly be able
to win this game? Considering you now know what you
got to do to get ready for this, it's definitely
a good draw. Just because it's the first game and
the first game of the year. You're not really yourself.
You never are going to be.
Speaker 6 (22:12):
There's gonna be some rust that you've got to knock off,
or you know, you're trying out different things. You've got
a bunch of new pieces. It'll be the first game
that George Pickens and Ceedee Lamb play together. So, but
Dak Prescott shown in his career that when he comes
through a season ending injury and comes back, he usually
plays pretty well in his first game back.
Speaker 4 (22:29):
Can I continue?
Speaker 6 (22:30):
And you know, I think I'm a big believer in
a mental aspect of games and a lot to do
with things. If you've got to sit there and watch
your division rival saying a super Bowl banner, If that
doesn't get you fired up as a competitor to go
out and play a little bit harder, then I just
don't think you're a competitor. So I think you catch
him at a really good time in terms of the
first game of the season, So that might make things
(22:50):
a little bit closer. But at the end of the day,
you know, you do look at, Okay, who's got the
better football team, And I think Philly's got the better
football team than Dallas right now. So it's gonna be
a tall hill to climb, but it gets a little
bit easier just because you get them right out of
the gate. I think, so you've got a better shot.
But that doesn't mean it's an easy shot or Okay,
this is an easy opposet pick or anything like that.
(23:12):
They're gonna have their work cutout for them.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
That it's a I think it's just a good measure stick.
Just like that game Tom Brady and Tampa was and
dak I think told Brady afterwards, we'll see he done right.
I think you know you're going to see Philly but
you know, they got Jordan Davis, they got their offensive line,
they got their quarterback, they got their terriffic running back.
They got everything you want, and that's why they're the champions.
So at the end of the game, I know people
(23:37):
get mad at this, this particular game. It's not the
end of the world if you lose. It's much more
important how you play. And at the end of the
Tampa Bay game, nobody was like, oh, they have no chance.
You're like, oh, okay, you played a good game.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
You lost. Now you don't need to lose number two.
Speaker 5 (23:51):
But you know, it's all you look like, you look
like you can play, and that particularly they could play.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
Kellimore, the offensive coordinator, is gone from Philadelphia. He now
in New Orleans, so that's one thing you can look
at there. I will say this, from covering this team
and covering Philadelphia when they want it the first time,
I knew they wouldn't repeat because they were still celebrating
(24:19):
this thing. Everywhere you went. It was reminders and it
was like we won, we won. I mean, fans were
still off that high that they finally wanted. I'll be
very interested to see how does this group and how
do they handle it this time around? Are you still
going to keep celebrating this thing or are you going
to say, Okay, look it's happened, let's go That to
(24:40):
me is the very interesting thing of how how do
you do it? Tom Brady being Tom Brady had been
through this and I thought Tom was such an engine
of how they functioned in Tampa Bay. So how does
Jalen Hurts, super Bowl MVP Saquon Barkley, guys who weren't
you know, who weren't there when they want it that
for time around? How do they as an organization handle this?
(25:03):
How does Nick Sirianni being a head football coach who's
now a Super Bowl champion he no longer has to
endure the folks at WIP saying you can't do this.
How did they handle it? How do you relax a
little bit? So that to me is going to be interesting.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
Yeah, it's a big part of it.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
And you know, I think Jalen Hurts obviously, he seems
like the top of level headed character who's just you know,
next order of business, and so that approach I think
is what he'll take. But you know, they've they've been
kind of on that victory lap still and you know
we've seen sa kuon Barkley doing a lot of different things,
and so that's you bring up a good point, and
that's part of the mental aspect of the game. Right
(25:40):
does does Philadelphia come into this game thinking, all right,
we're still better than them. You know, we've still got
a better roster. This is going to be a cake walk.
And by all means with their roster, they have every
every reason to. I think it was seventy five or
thirteen was the combined score the two games last season.
They have everything they need to play that well again.
(26:01):
And you know, Dallas having Dak Prescott back healthy makes
it a completely different story. And Dak is nine to
four against the Eagles in his career. But it's just
the mental aspect of I think for Dallas is okay. Well,
they've got a chance to go in and play spoiler.
Brian Schottenheimer's got a chance to make a statement in
his first ever game as head coach.
Speaker 4 (26:17):
So they're going to be ready for this game.
Speaker 6 (26:18):
It's the first game of the season, so you've got
two extra months to prepare for this game more than
any other game on your schedule.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
Yes, sure, there is no other team that.
Speaker 6 (26:26):
You know better than Philadelphia, So they've got a real
chance here, but again, it's still a tough hill to climb.
Speaker 5 (26:33):
You know, the most fascinating thing about Philadelphia to me
this season is Saquon Barkley.
Speaker 9 (26:39):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (26:39):
Saquon Barkley.
Speaker 5 (26:40):
Fantastic year last year, two thousand yards lid like he
was playing college football at the end of the year.
Every game he's got a sixty yard run, seventy yard run.
But man, it turned twenty eight in February. So the
question becomes, and he's coming off a season with three
hundred and seventy eight touches, which is a big number
in today's NFL.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
Will he be super Saquan this year or will he
revert to the mean?
Speaker 2 (27:06):
Yes?
Speaker 5 (27:08):
And because traditionally running backs fall for cliff at twenty
eight and so will he be Adrian Peterson? Will he
be I'm having an old man moment. Who's our great king?
Henry Derrick Henry?
Speaker 2 (27:20):
Will he be?
Speaker 3 (27:21):
Emmitt Smith? Will he be that guy?
Speaker 5 (27:22):
I'm not mentioning Frank Gore because I think he's a
stack compile, but will he be able to maintain that
he's an elite running back? Because their offense is built
off of him being an elite running back because the
quarterback is not an elite passer, but he becomes an
elite quarterback when you get handed.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
Off and you have to respect that. And now we
you know, we can pick and choose when we want
to throw.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
So, speaking of another Philadelphia legend, Rocky, and that's not
the one I thought this is too young for you.
You weren't born. But in Rocky three, I think creed
when when Mickey says to Rocky even saying, since you
won that belt, and that is the key when you
(28:04):
have championships teams and on opening night, are you still
the rings we did this? Are you still in celebration
mode while the other team is licking their chops waiting
to come ahead and kick your championship tail? And if
you're Dak Prescott, ceedee lamb. You've been here before. Hey,
we played on one of these before. We know what
(28:25):
the atmosphere this is. If you're you know, if you're
Shinheimer in the cabin, this is a perfect opportunity for
you to try to play spoil you know this. It
could potentially be there. Will it be there? We'll see,
We'll see. But that's the thing where if Philly's not
ready to go, if they still celebrate popping that thing,
(28:48):
what happens? Because last year, that's the one thing I
have learned being in this business long enough, you have
to you climb the mountain you planted your flag, you
have to go down to the bottom and start and
work your way all the way exactly. So that is
why it is so hard to do. And it sounds
like Philly where it's an ultimate reactionary tap. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
And the interesting thing too is, let's say Dallas wins
this opening game.
Speaker 6 (29:12):
Do then they become the all right, we beat the
super Bowl champs, like we're going seventeen to oh this season.
Of course, that's you know, maybe a little dramatic, but
you know you've got to come back home and beat
the Giants at home. You can't that one game doesn't
define your season. It's the first game of the season.
You're not going to be you know, your identity is
not going to be found entirely in that first game.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
So can they be level.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
Headed enough if they do pull off a win, it's
going to be an emotional win. It would have to
be against Philadelphia. Do you have the level headedness and
the culture that Brian Schoenheimer's emphasized so much to us
throughout the early parts of this offseason to be able
to stay level headed and go back to work the.
Speaker 4 (29:51):
Following week and beat the Giants.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
It's ten days, it's ten days off exactly. You get
ten days off.
Speaker 4 (29:56):
You've got to sit on the high of that victory though,
for ten days.
Speaker 6 (30:00):
So do you can you be prepared to come back
and come home, So you can either stay on that
high or you can you know, ride that high for
a couple of days and then.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
All right, we'll right back to work.
Speaker 6 (30:09):
So it kind of I feel like you can work
both ways of in terms of Okay, it's Philly a
little bit riding too high on this, sure, Dallas ride
too high on this going into the Giants game. So
you know, it's an early test for everybody, and how's
Brian shot Humber gonna have to handle that either way
that things go in that first game. So in the
nitty gritty parts of this, it's it's an interesting it's
an interesting case study.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
It's a big game for your quarterback too, Yeah, no doubt,
big game for.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
The quarterback game. Potentially a big game for the guy
expect to be the highest paid defensive player in football.
Michael Parsons, Let's hit the brake, come back and talk

Speaker 2 (33:10):
Media mash. Here schedule releases. I got the author John
Jock Taylor. Here got Tom you Aresham Dallas Cowboys dot Com.
I am new he scrugs here. Hey, Arizona comes to town. Monday,
November third, It's Kyler Murray on Monday Night football. Kyler
Murray has a incredible record over at AT and T
Stadium for the time he's playing at all in high school.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
And uh, he ain't playing Skyline this week. That week
he playing Footworth Arlington Heights.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
Well, according to South Lake Care, according to vegas Is,
this is a seven and a half Cowboy win team
he did. It might be, it might be. I'm worried
about that game. I'm telling you right, I'm worried about
that because Kyler Murray is a witch for the Cowboys
to deal with me.
Speaker 5 (33:51):
It just how many times has Kyler Murray played the
Cowboy I don't even remember because Josh Dobbs was the
witch and last time they played mano Kyler.
Speaker 3 (33:59):
You know, Caler Murray is just.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
Kyler and that if it was actually, if if the
game was in Arizona, I feel better. But Kyler Kyler
Kyler at home man feel good, company's comfortable.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
I don't know if he's Klim Murray. Is he like
the eighteenth best quarterback?
Speaker 4 (34:13):
I don't know if Kyler has ever lost to the
TMT Stadium think his whole career.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
I don't think he has. But okay, you can say
he might just ask the question, no, no, look whatever,
is he a good quarterback I'm being I'm not even
being funny.
Speaker 3 (34:26):
Or is he an average quarterback?
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Because it was average to me in that building. He's great. Yeah,
sometimes you just got somebody number. Can do nothing else.
But sometimes you just got their number. If Ken Norton
for some reason gave Muhammad Ali the worst trouble he had, I.
Speaker 5 (34:41):
Thought, I just fannay usc. I was like, I don't
remember those games. Forgot he had the famous Daddy.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
But no, you're absolutely the right and they got knocked
that by Big George and fradge.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
I think so. I mean it just sometimes Bart Scott
used hot styles make fights, especially in football. This is true.
Kyler Murray has just been been a guy who's given
them challenges, and especially from the defensive standpoint. The Cowboys,
who already have had issues the past few seasons stopping
the run. Then you add a quarterback who has the
ability to run on top of that. It has been
(35:14):
an issue that has yet to be solved under Matt Eberflus.
He may solve it this year. We don't know. But
right now, when I see a Jalen Hurts, I see
a Jordan Love, I see Daniels of the Commanders, I
see Kyler Murray, I get worried because these are the
(35:34):
kind of guys who can buy extra time and use
their feet a little bit, which are troublesome for the Cowboys,
and while Micah Parsons and when they bring us up
back to the point, hopefully they get Michael Parson sign.
I think it's done till he's in camp and he's
ready to go, so you can go beat Philadelphia. But
that's how you kind of neutralize a guy like Michael
Prson a little bit, because you got a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (35:54):
Who can move.
Speaker 6 (35:55):
Yeah, and you're talking about having somebody's number. Wasn't beating
the Cardinals. It's twenty seventeen. Last three times they've played.
I was in twenty twenty Cardinals thirty eight Cowboys ten,
twenty twenty two Cardinals twenty five, Cowboys twenty two, and
then twenty twenty three was the last time they played
Cardinals twenty eight Cowboys sixteen, So it's been a it's
(36:20):
been eight years since the Cowboys beat the Cardinals, but
obviously things a lot different from even from that twenty
twenty three year. And I mean, I wasn't working here
in twenty twenty three, but I remember how it's kind
of like, wow, the Cardinals beat the Cowboys by twelve
and that season, but you know, it's one of those
that's what a Week three games, So it's one of
those early season games where you're still trying to figure
(36:41):
things out and you don't really know what you are
sometimes and that's when it catches you. So this is
obviously very different considering it's the week before or bye,
but you get an extra day off because you go
to Denver on Sunday and then you get a Monday
night football game the week after that, so they'll be
a little bit rested. And you know, this Cardinals team
is very interesting because they've got so many different pieces
like Paris Johnson Junior on the offensive line, where you're
(37:04):
kind of, yeah, he's been good, but he's kind of
like oh and uh speaking of Oh, Marvin Harrison Junior
on the outside, you know, he's just an absolute freak
show and one of the best receivers in the class
last year. You know, can he take that next step?
Can both of those guys take that next step? And
I think jj T brought up a good point. How
good is Kyler Murray?
Speaker 2 (37:22):
So Jack, you know this. Everybody you get the schedule,
you start writing down w's and l's every year when
you see a team like Airs every year, But whenever
Arizona's on the schedule, cowboy fan Norton that they just
throw it out W I'm not doing that. I'm not
gonna get to ail down. I got to ail down
there because Kyler Murray's witch in that building. Kyler Murray
(37:43):
is a witch in that building. But you know they're
not good enough to sit around here. If you say,
a Cowboy fan, this team has yet to show you
that they're good enough that you know you're gonna get
Arizona if you.
Speaker 3 (37:54):
Don't do a true schedule thing.
Speaker 5 (37:55):
Man, you got to pull in one game that you
think they're gonna win they did lose, and that would
be the You got to have one that they win
that you'd like that should be a lost. But you
say everybody's got an Upstate in at bay, and everybody's
got a game, they shouldn't put it in a bay.
And that's how you come up with a true accurate
I got, I.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
Got the Philadelphia I got them beating Philadelphi at home.
Speaker 4 (38:16):
I think they can beat the Lions. I think what
we were talking about earlier.
Speaker 6 (38:21):
You got as many changes as they do of the
most sought after head coaching candidates, and Ben Johnson and
Aaron Glenn and they both leave. It's a tough hill
to climb over. I think that can be one where
they go on the road and surprise some people.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
I'll look at one here. Denver will be interesting. Yeah,
Denver going up there to Denver after a commander's game
at home. Bow Knicks had a good rookie year, surprising.
I did not think bo Knicks would be that good either.
How do they handle it? How does Denver handle now
the expectations. It's still a tough division, that's still a
(38:58):
hard That AFC WES is a hard division. So how
does Denver and what do the coordinators?
Speaker 8 (39:04):
Do?
Speaker 2 (39:05):
You know across the NFL and now they've got takee Hey,
what is it this kid does?
Speaker 7 (39:08):
Well?
Speaker 2 (39:08):
What do we take away? And how do we go?
So I'll be interested to see how Denver ends up
responding because they had a good year last year. But
can you do it again? That's the toughest thing about
this league. Can you do it again?
Speaker 5 (39:20):
That I didn't do it on this but I always
like to go through and look at the quarterback play,
like which games do you think your quarterback has the age?
And if he plays well, those are games you should win,
and then see if they match up.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
All right, Tommy, you got a win total.
Speaker 6 (39:37):
It's tough because I feel like this, this is a schedule. Well,
hold on, I'll give you.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
I'll give you one.
Speaker 6 (39:44):
It's a schedule where I look at him, I say, okay,
since we don't know what this team is, you got
a first year head coach.
Speaker 4 (39:49):
I think you can get anywhere from.
Speaker 6 (39:51):
Like five to twelve, and I wouldn't be surprised anywhere
in that range. I wouldn't be surprised. I look at
this and I see nine or ten.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
I think I got seven at the possible Yeah, that's
why I'm at seven at the possible. So and that possible.
Is the last game of the year at the Giants.
Do you want to win it or not? But I
just think this is a tough challenge Vegas has with
seven and a half points.
Speaker 5 (40:13):
Now, Vegas under win total has been within a game
and a half in nine of the last thirteen years,
so they're usually pretty out it.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
So I just think we still I still have questions
about the defensive tackle. Yeah, you know, being able to
stop the run. The corner situation still, you know, is
a question for me. And then we kind of have
to flush out and figure out what is the running
back and then left tackle, you know, So there's still issues.
I think this team could be maybe two years away
(40:41):
from having the kind of pieces they need to get
rolled in here once again, we could be shocked. We
could be shocked. But right now, just initially writing this
out without more additions, without training kit, without us seeing
exactly what preliminary win total preliminary right now, I says
seven a possible.
Speaker 5 (40:56):
Now, my preliminary win total last year, my preliminary win
total was, uh, you were on point. No, it was
like six or seven, and then I got up to
eight when they added two fat gass This year, I've
started my preliminary one total at nine. Now you will
me tell you the biggest thing in the season, and
he gets mad, is uh, it's quarterbacks health. It's true,
(41:19):
like three in the last five years he's missed substantial
tie And it doesn't matter whether it's a finger or
a calf or it doesn't matter what the injury is.
It is like Anthony Davis, don't nobody care if it's
a foot and abdomen. All we know is you're not
playing Corys Sieger right now, great player. All we know
is DeMarco Tomorco would get mad when people ask him question.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
It's like, dude, you hurt. Even when he won Office Player,
you got hurt. So it just is what it is.
Speaker 5 (41:42):
So hey, man, if you can get Dak for sixteen
seventeen games, then yeah, they should win ten minimum.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
His history shows you that they'll be in pat But
if he's.
Speaker 5 (41:52):
Going to miss four and a quarter of the season,
then they're gonna be sitting around and seven, eight, nine.
Speaker 2 (41:58):
And you don't have Cooper rush to tobaccuum up this
youngster and we'll see whether he can play or not.
And we'll see what youngster is. We gotta have cam
for I'm not gonna just put Joe Milton in there yet.
Speaker 5 (42:10):
Well, I was gonna say they need trade for, but
you know they trade for a lot of pieces they
don't use around here sometimes.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
All right, Jack Taylor, appreciate you. Tommy yarsh Man, we
appreciate you coming here and talk about make this uh
not your last trip. All right, We appreciate you. I'm
new he strugs for Chris Joshi. Everybody here, Dallas Cowboys
dot Com. We will talk to you next week.
Speaker 6 (42:29):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
