(00:46):
Matt Mosley, and I want to start right there as
we start to recap this draft. You guys had Bill
O'Brien on, and I thought it was a fascinating conversation
because Bill was the offensive coordinator at Alabama when Tyler Booker,
the Cowboys first round guard from Alabama, was there, and
then he just finished his first year as the head
coach of Boston College over in the ACC and had
(01:06):
the Cowboy second round pick Donovan Aziaku, who was the
ACC Defensive Player of the Year second in the FBS
and with sixteen and a half sacks. So ed I
thought the conversation and let's start with Booker. When Booker
comes from ig to Alabama and his experiences with him.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
He said from the very start that you know, he
and Doug Marone, who's a offensive line coach, was a
former NFL head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars, they were
both involved in recruiting Tyler Booker to Alabama. That it
was very unusual that he played late in his freshman season,
that he was immediately even on a team where Bryce
(01:48):
Young was the starting quarterback, that Booker, Tyler Booker showed
early signs of leadership on that offensive line for those teams.
And he went through the whole process of you know,
Booker and Aseraka, in his opinion, are both young guys
who are passionate about football, which we know that was
a prerequisite for Brian Schottenheimer. Both were team captains. They
(02:13):
said that Bill. Brian said, you know, both of these
guys they played big time competition. They know how to prepare,
they know how to practice. They you know, they're they're
interested in getting everything they can out of every drill
in which they get involved with Booker. I was most
curious about how Bill viewed him athletically because he didn't
get he ran a five to three, had a very
(02:35):
poor score athletically. But Bill told me that, and I
talked to three other teams and I'll tell you what
they said. But but he said, hey, we ran a
lot of pin and poll, you know, we ran a
lot of screens where he had to poll on the perimeter.
And so he thinks he's an entirely mobile guy who
can block effectively in space and get to the second level,
(02:59):
get out on the perimeter, and that he'll get better
at that. But what he's really great at right now
is being a you know, blocking for a downhill runner,
and that sounds like what Brian Schottenheimer wants on early
downs and then get players out on the perimeter whe
whether it's you know, the rookie they just big or
Javonte Williams, Jayden Blue. So it'll be interesting to see
(03:20):
how that develops. But yeah, he had he had an
incredibly high opinion of both of these guys, and I
reached out to him because it struck me when they
drafted as iaku, Hey, Bill O'Brien, who I know well
and has always been very cooperative with me when I've
covered his team. You know, he I think he coached
him at Boston College last year. And then his his
first text back to me included at the end, oh
(03:42):
I love Booker too, And I was like, oh, that's right.
He was at Alabama, So what a unique perspective to
for him to be able to share on two good players.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Really good conversation. In one of the things he talked about,
he says, Hey, Booker's going to come in here be
a leader.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Right right away. He he made you know, he has
no compunction about the fact that he'll be able to
do that, he said. He also said, you look, this
guy has played you know, he played at the IMG Academy.
Left We heard his story. He left New Jersey, Connecticut
area when he was fourteen, went to the IMG Academy
to prepare to be a pro football player, and then
(04:14):
he went to Alabama, which that's as tough as it
gets in terms of competition and expectations and you know,
trying to impress Nick Saban and that coaching staff, which
include a lot of NFL coaches, So he knows what
it takes to play in big games and playing you know,
against tough opponents and so forth. And then he also
said that you know, in terms of his character that
(04:36):
he said Bill Brown said, football is his life. Look,
this guy wants to win, definitely hates to lose. He said,
we didn't lose much when he was at Alabama, but
what I remember is when we did lose, when he
came back to practice the next week, he carried that
loss with him in a positive way and used it
to motivate not only himself, but his teammates, scout team,
(05:00):
everybody had to rise to the occasion. After they lost
at Alabama.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
He gave a brilliant press conference yea when he got here,
and you've seen a lot of press conference and I
thought that was one of the more impressive press conferences
I've ever seen a young man give. That he understood
where he was coming to, who was here before him. Basically,
he understood the assignment of being a Dallas cowboy. And
(05:25):
that's not to criticize other people because these are young folks,
but this is a very mature kid. And when we
talked about what Brian Schottenheimer wants, like this is what
you're looking for. So when people are saying, well, athletically,
I don't know about this. I'm like, who's the fastest
Cowboys offensive life? I don't know.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
We know who the strongest one is, but we don't
know who the fastest.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
One, right, we don't know all these things like that.
After all, it doesn't matter. And for the scheme that
Clayton Adams and Brian Schottenheimer what they're gonna go ask
for their offensive line. They know what they need. And
that's that's my hope for all the people that well,
he's not this, he's not that they know what they want.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
It's entirely possible that the Cowboys, because of Larry Allen,
because of the experience recently with Zach Martin, that they
value guard play in a different way than we might,
or the general population in the NFL. The fans might,
certainly because they've had that high level of play at
(06:26):
that position. I mean, nobody's drafted six offensive linemen since
twenty eleven, other than I think New Orleans and the
Titans are the only other two teams that have drafted
six offensive linemen in the first round since the Cowboys
started doing that with Tyron Smith in twenty eleven, and
they've drafted three guards. Nobody's done that. Usually you know
the premium positions on their perimeter. But we know that
(06:49):
Brian Schottenheimer has said he wants to win the line
of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, and in
this division, maybe that does start inside if that's where
the best players are ed.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Thank you very much. Okay for our cowboy listeners out there,
please please please go look at the division and what
was going down on draft day, and go look at
the defensive lines and defenses in this division. Who these
coaches are. Vic Fangio is the guy that when he
was coaching the Broncos like, here's the blueprint to beat
the Cowboys, and everywhere he's been.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Miami after that, that was Denver, then Miami, now Philly.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
He's been beating the Cowboys. So Vic Fangio knows what
to do. You gotta face them twice here dan Quinn.
You already know what dan Quinn's gonna do. And right
now we also.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Know the way to beat dan Quinn. Run the football.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
And then what I mean the Giants, the Giants first
two of the first three picks. These guys are gonna
be something to do with and they've already got beat there,
so you have to win. I was talking to Rick Goslin,
you're a coworker with the Dallas Warning. He was another
Hall of famer like yourself, and he said, you can't
beat the Eagles if you can't block the.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
The Eagles, and you gotta love these You mentioned his
press conference and uh and and Tyler Booker was really good.
He did show reverence for the players here in this organization,
who who followed or whom he follows, and the respect
he has for them. And then he said when he
was asked who he looks forward to matching up with,
he picked the best guy, right. He picked the bully
(08:18):
on the Eagles, Jalen Carter. I can't wait to face
Jalen Carter. That first game very well might be against
the defending Super Bowl champions on opening night in Philly.
And he's not afraid to say, I want that guy.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
I understand the assignment. This is what you know what
I want to be. I want to be great. I
want to be good. That's the that's the guy. He's
got the ring, he's on top. That's my job. If
you're Dak Prescott, you should be excited.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Sure, and because the thing that Dak Prescott needs, and
he does need another receiver, for sure, they need another receiver.
In my opinion, they need a better number two receiver.
And they seem aware of that because they wanted Ted
mcmill in it. If he fell to them at twelve,
they would have taken him. Yes, And even then, as
much as Brian Schottenheimer liked him, I think there were
people on the staff who didn't really share his enthusiasm
(09:06):
for McMillan, didn't weren't sure that he had the speed to,
you know, get away from elite defenders and create consistent
separation in the NFL. Nobody has any questions about Booker's
ability to play. Like I said, I talked to three
other general managers in the NFL right after the Cowboys
took him. They all had very high opinions, high grades,
and their only questions were the one that I asked
(09:27):
Bill O'Brien answer, which is how good an athlete is he?
How limited is he going to be? These guys here
they know the run game, they know what they want.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
They know what and that's that's the thing I keep
going back to over and over again. It's knowing what
it is you, what's your strategy? And I thought Bill
Parcells did a fantastic job when he first got here.
He said, look, I want character people. And that was
when we saw a Marcus Spears come in, DeMarcus Ware,
Kevin Burnett when he was drafted. We need those kinds.
(09:57):
In my mind, that's what you need to build the culture,
and that's what they're trying to do. And so in
the interview that you had with with Bill O'Brien talking
about what both as a rocker in the second round
the Booker brought, I thought that was pretty good. And
so for the people that are like, oh you need
you know who's that gonna throw to, they'll figure it out.
(10:19):
But right now, if you can't block the Eagles, you
can't beat the Eagles, you can't win. You look in
the division, it's it's tough upfront. John Taylor, I agree
with all.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
I agree with all that.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Good to see. Good to see your thoughts on on
Tyler Booker the first round.
Speaker 5 (10:37):
Pick, I'm for you know, my first rule with any
pick is can you play? See I was never a
Tyler gud And guy last year only because it was
clear they were drafting for me. They were drafting like
the fifth of the sixth tackle, they're asking them to
change positions. I was like that, dude ain't gonna be
ready to play as a rookie. So I was down
on that, but this one, I like, I would have
preferred for them to get something better in terms of
(10:59):
skill position, but that was not available based on tech
being picked.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
Earlier by Carolina.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
So I also looked at it as though, Okay, if
it goes like it should go, what.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
Do they have now?
Speaker 5 (11:10):
Because shot, he's talked about running the ball and wanting
to be physical and on it. Now I got Tyler Smith,
got Cooper BB, you got Tyler Booker, and then what's
the best thing that still does run block?
Speaker 4 (11:21):
So now there ain't really no excuse.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
I don't know what you're gonna do with the left tackle,
but there's no excuses for you not to be able
to run the ball between.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
Tackles that on the right side.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Well, if hopefully got invested in coaches on the offensive
line who can get more out of Tyler Guyton and
that he'll be more committed to his own development and
he'll perform at a higher level this year in year
two than he did last season.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
See, he made an interesting point. Who that started with?
Speaker 5 (11:46):
That starts with him, right, You have all coaches, We
can have all the trainers if we want to. You
can't out train a bad die. You can have all
the tennis coaches you want to.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
If you ain't out there.
Speaker 5 (11:56):
Hitting some balls by yourself occasionally, you ain't gonna be
no good. So if Tyler Guiden has maturity to the
point where he would like to be a good player
and not an overrated bust, then I think it'll be fine.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
I still believe that the awesome Richards kid is not
being talked about enough. W because you know, guys, we
know that they're here to play and and and they're
not just gonna sit around here. I'm gonna let this
guy have a job. As at the end of the year,
when these coaches are trying to save their child, they
weren't throwing Tyler Guyton out there. Let me trying to
(12:30):
say about that man got to sit.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
They're playing a doga a journeyman.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
And because Richard's got hurt, so so I think I'm
looking at this and so hey, look there it's not
there's still a competition. You know, somebody can want to
plug and play. Hey, I think they hope he's there.
But if I'm awesome richards like man, I'm going to
work here, I'm gonna tribe win a job.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
Well, what Schottenheimer said consistently, the five best guys are
gonna play right that. Don't miss the message here, Tyler Guiden.
People might be asking, what about playing Tyler Smith at left?
That message We're gonna play the best five. That's for you.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
We'll see, we shall see. All right, let's get a
break in here. Let's dive more into Donovan Azeraku and
what Bill O'Brien had to say about him coming out
of that year in Boston College where he was the
a SEC player there. Ed Werder, Jacques Taylor, News Schrus,
this is the media mash on Dallas Cowboys dot Com.

are our new he scrugs?
Speaker 4 (15:29):
Here?
Speaker 2 (15:30):
The Cowboys take Tyler Booker round one Ed's podcast Doomsday
that he does with Matt Moseley. They brought in the
Boston College head coach Bill O'Brien, who coached Booker at
Alabama's the offensive coordinator. Bill's now the head coach of
the Boston College Eagles. And Diamond Azoraku, who went in
the second round of the draft. Sixteen and a half
(15:51):
sacks for Boston College last year. That was second at
FBS and he was the acc Player of the Year.
Some people talk talk about he's small, about six two
and a half, but he gets there. I'm not calling
him Dwight.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
Freemy, so he's freemie like.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
But when you think about what was his calling card
at Syracuse, he got to the quarterback, he was speedy stripsack.
There we go. And how many games did Bill say
that as Iraku helped them win last year?
Speaker 3 (16:24):
He cited specifically three games that as a Roku helped
them either clinch with a strip sack and turn the
ball over or with a strip sack that provided the
offense the opportunity to go down and score the game
winning points three times last season. And he he said
this was a guy who called him a self made
(16:44):
player said, he would, you know, stay after practice all
the time. We mentioned Doug Moron, drug Maroon, the offensive
flying coach. Maron would teach him how offensive linemen were
going to try to block him, and he was very
engaged in that process on a regular basis. And he
said that he never missed practice. That he bought in
even though you know, with a new coaching staff, Bill
(17:05):
O'Brien going there for his first year, didn't didn't have
to buy in, but he did buy in and was
unanimous team captain elected by all of his teammates. And yeah,
he said, he actually won a few games for us.
He won a s a Syracuse game with the stripsack
he want us, the Western Kentucky game with the strip sack,
the North Carolina game with the stripsack. So he does
that a lot. He just has a real knack for
(17:28):
getting the ball out when he gets near a quarterback. Said,
he plays with really good leverage and flexibility, dip, great
takeoff acceleration to the quarterback and then gets his arms
on the ball, he said. And he said, some people
will question, you know, how he's going to match up
in the run game. That'll be the big question for him,
but he said he played the run well for them
like he was. It's not that he wasn't willing to
(17:50):
play the run. He played the run and he matched
up well physically, you know in the acc Is that
going to translate to being blocked by NFL tackles. We'll see.
But he played at two forty five. Bill thinks he
could get to two fifty five perhaps, but said he's
just plays a relentless, one hundred mile an hour style
of football. You know, chases plays down from the backside,
(18:12):
a lot of tackles for loss. So you know, maybe
they found I don't think he's gonna play the run
initially as well as to Marcus Lawrence did, but it
sounds like he's at least willing to make the effort.
Bill says he won't be blocked in the run game
by a tight end. He'll handle tight ends. The question
is can he block a tackle? So you better assign
a tackle to him.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
The thing I liked about what the little less so
because I'm not gonna sit it and tell yes.
Speaker 5 (18:36):
So I'm playing Boston College because their ire relevant college program.
That being said, there's only one thing that matters when
it comes to can you get the quarterback?
Speaker 4 (18:46):
Can you bend? Can you dip?
Speaker 5 (18:48):
Put your shouldered dag on there on the ground and
get around the tackle, then pop back up and go
accelerate to the court.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
That's the only thing that matters.
Speaker 5 (18:56):
And I noticed because it's my famous a Beniezer Ecubine store.
And now you say I was asking whoever was Zimmer
or somebody back then, how could a guy staff the
practice and work as hard as he does. Y'all all
say he gives relentless effort and he can't sack my grandmama,
And they said he can't be And so I said,
that's when I got the explanation. Say, if you can't
do that, you can't play. Look at the Marcus where
(19:17):
all the great pass rushers they can bid. He got that,
and you don't have to be no scout to look
at tape of him and.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
See that he got that. And that's when I talk
about a guy like Freeye because coming out of Syracuse
people talked about the height, but he could bin. And
so if you've got that, and the Lake Gil Brandt
Hall of Famer would say, knewly if they're not doing
it there, they're going to come up here.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
You know, I'm a huge believer in that. I don't
even think it's that complicated.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
Like, who is a Shamar Stewart, Mister mister, mister universe,
mster America. You got four saxon college, Doug, you can't
play Mike Mamula, Mike, I mean you just black.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
I was there in Cleveland. It was all about that
Mike Mamula, crow Man, I'm Lobardi and Belichick kept raving
about Michael. He was like Fox. Oh gosh, luckily they
didn't get him.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
But yet, like for real, really, like, no matter what
position it is, if you can't do it in college
and you've played two or three years, why in the
world would we expect you to do it up here?
Speaker 2 (20:12):
I remember, uh, when Trel Sucks came out of Arizona State,
as he knew, someon took him and he had with
like twenty something sacks and people are like the down grade,
Well it's it's the Pac ten. But now he was
doing it there, and he went to the National Football
League and he still did it now there. But there
are cases where you did it there and you.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
Can't do it here.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
I can get that because maybe guys are just better
or whatever. But if you haven't done it there in college, and.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
That's just kind of my privise, Like oh yeah, I
mean for people say whatever you want to about the
ACC sixteen and a half sacks, he did it. You
talked about Bill. Here's where he won games and he
was the a SEC Player of the year. Would he
have been the SEC but we don't know. But all
I know is where he was. He wrecked shop. He
did it. If you're the Cowboys, to me, that's what
(20:58):
you should be doing. In the second people are frustrating
and get the running back and not a receiver here,
and I'm like, this guy can play. And for those
who want to talk about the run at this point
in time, I'm looking at you got Parsons, but there's
gonna be you're gonna throw bodies at the position.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
You've got guys long term who were you know, Dante
Fowler is here on a one year contract. Sam Williams
is coming off an injury. He's on a one year contract.
So you know, I think internally they discussed with the
second round taking you know, one of the corners, maybe
Will Johnson was it possibility, but this guy just stood
out as an elite pass rush guy. And it was
(21:39):
not only beneficial immediately now to put him opposite Michael
Parsons after you've lost to Marcus Lawrence, but long term
in this organization to have two pass rushers like that,
for we assume the duration of their careers.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
And in Latimore Marshall Lattimore here, so you're going to
they have to throw bodies at the position. And I
kind of think of it at this way. You got
Parsons here, so he's got to get doubled. So can
somebody win on a third down one on one?
Speaker 4 (22:06):
That's exactly what.
Speaker 3 (22:07):
And that's Bowler Ken. We've seen that, we know he
can do it. He's just coming off a career high
in sacks, right, and this kid should give them that opperatuity.
Speaker 4 (22:14):
And it's a passing game, eh.
Speaker 5 (22:17):
You have to be able to pressure an effect and
make the quarterback move an uncomfortable or you have no chance.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
Well, and Bill O'Brien called plays in his last year
as a new England offensive coordinator, they played Dallas. He
knows what it's like to absorb the challenge of Micah
Parsons and knowing where he is on every play. And
now all of a sudden, you got another guy who
Bill said can play stand up linebacker two. You know,
he doesn't just have to play on the edge. And
so I think this is another guy that they can
(22:42):
get created Matt Eberflus can get creative with.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
And I think now that ain't fluce his strength?
Speaker 9 (22:46):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (22:46):
What creativity?
Speaker 11 (22:48):
Well?
Speaker 3 (22:49):
I think it depends on the players.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Yet there you go, okay, because somebody's they can help you.
Players can help you become.
Speaker 4 (22:55):
Good, they can help you become creative.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
The uh, I think about the quarterbacks in this division.
You got a Super Bowl MVP, and you got a
Rookie of the Year who knows what they do with
the Giants, But you're going to have to account for
these players. And so when people were moaning and grown
in and obviously they didn't know enough about diving Azaraku,
that's just people just that complaining, complaint and not looking
(23:18):
at where is the Cowboys defense is problematic?
Speaker 3 (23:22):
They other than Carolina, which allowed a historic number of points,
the Cowboys were the next worst defense in the NFL.
And oh look what did Washington do this offseason? Did
they not give Jaden Daniels a chance to be greater
than he already was. They got a left tackle that
they traded for in Laramie Tunsel, and they drafted a
tackle in the first round in Connorley. Connorley from the
(23:45):
Oregon Right brought in.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
Deebo Samuel right to go along with Terry McMillan Terry
mclowan because they're like, hey, you need to we need
somebody else over here. So they got their guest some hill, right.
But you just look at from the Cowboys to take
you know, your first rounds two and three to go.
Defense fans are frush who's dak throwing him? Like, guys,
have you looked at your trenches and how the Cowboys
(24:11):
have been getting beat? And then oh, by the way,
the defensive backfield has question marks.
Speaker 5 (24:17):
They just need good players, bro, I mean they needed
they needed all of this. It's not like they drafted
for plays as they didn't need. They just needed a
lot And.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
That's that's that was kind of just interesting just looking
at social media the complainers about that because uh, the
third round, Savon Rebel Junior from East Carolina.
Speaker 4 (24:34):
Yes, leave their second round pick.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
Yes to me and Jerry wait another round not a
different day. But the Jerry Doctor Cooper gamble prospect is
that made him wait, wait in the third round instead
of the second round, j We're.
Speaker 4 (24:48):
Gonna get you that gay were gonna get him.
Speaker 10 (24:50):
Wait.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
The only thing they needed was before they made the
pick was the masters tradition like no.
Speaker 5 (24:57):
Injured cowboy, We're gonna get your first round talent, doctor
doctor Cooper Warard been there, so Cooper draftee.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
But Rebel, if healthy, is a player Mini said is
a first round pick, and most.
Speaker 4 (25:11):
People said eighteen to thirty three.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
It's interesting that in some on some boards of some experts,
I don't know how accurate they all are, but Booker
would have been the lowest of the three rated players
that the Cowboys took in the first three rounds. Most
boys and nobody says Booker can't play.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Right right, It's true. I mean outside of Travis Hunter.
You know, Rebels could have been the best corner, could
have been the best.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
Coring eight size length picks. The ball plays aggressively, and
you know, apparently his timetable from recovering from his ACL
is much earlier than Trayvon Diggs. And so while they
think he'll start training camp on pop and he's gonna
miss a lot of field time in the preseason corner
(25:55):
you can probably make up for, will you be right fully,
I mean we've seen guys come back weren't quite right
the first year, so maybe not. But he's going to
fill a need and he's a unique athlete at the
position where they really needed another player.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Yes, it's a gamble, but you know, I mean Will
Johnson was a gamble for someone as well.
Speaker 5 (26:13):
It's okay in my opinion for you to make those
gambles in the third round or the fourth round. I
don't like them so much in the second round, but
the third round because my crickteria is different first two rounds.
Those guys need to essentially be walking starters and a
significant contributor. Yes, your third round pick, you really hope
is a is a significant contributor. Maybe he stars, maybe
(26:34):
he doesn't, but you want him on the field quite
a bit well.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
And he played more press man in college than any
of the other corners who are available in this draft,
and that's what he refers wants to play. He played
that about a third of the snaps.
Speaker 4 (26:46):
You get what you want.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
It's a good football player in these Carolina he's a
very good football player. And when I saw these three picks,
to myself, I'm like, they all make sense. There is
a strategy there. He said, Okay, I understand what you're doing.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
And all three of them not only will make the
team and depending on his revel's physical status, could help
you from the start of the rookie seasons, but should
be good players for a long time.
Speaker 4 (27:16):
And I expect all those guys, you would expect it
on day one to be second contract guts and.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
Nothing against national guys. National. You're trying to cover everything.
That's a lot. But the amount of people who didn't
truly understand the dig situation out here when they were
trying to kind of, you know, talk about overreaches or
this that, I don't think they understood it. And to
talk about Booker if well, that was too high. I
don't think they understood that Zach Martin was not the
(27:46):
Zach Martin that we'd come to know last year, that
that was not that guy, and this was a problem,
and they decided to do what essentially everybody wished to. Hey,
we got a Hall of Fame guy lead, We're about
to go draft somebody who can immediately step in here,
who we think has the potential to be great.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
Could not run the football last year four yards of
carry one of the worst in the NFL. Six touchdowns
rushing the worst in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Well a quarterback coming off an injury that you'd like to, hey, man,
we really don't want you throwing right we got the
run covered. We don't want you throwing the ball foury
times a game. And oh, by the way, we went
out here and got coaches that we don't run the football.
It was just kind of interesting to see and hear
just national guys like how much you're really looking into
what the issues are here? Because you got to go
(28:34):
back to the corner spot. You got digs, it's injury
pland was hurt last year after those two guys.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
They played one game together. And how how many guys
do they have? A corners start? One hundred and fifty
year more snaps last year? Seven or eight.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
Corners is bad and you lost Jordan Lewis. So if
you just say, hey, how do I feel about the
Cowboys nickel defense right now? And who's back there at
the corner spots, you can tell going into the draft.
You couldn't tell me you felt good.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
No, shady right.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Oh, by the way, here's Jane Hurts Daniels. That's the thing.
I'm like, guys, and you start looking at this overall,
you can't feel real good about what's going on right now.
And they needed to fill it.
Speaker 3 (29:20):
And while yes, you'd love to have the wide receiver,
thirty two wide receivers drafted the most of any position
in the NFL this year, and the Cowboys took a nun.
I get the criticism of that, but the players they
took are at positions of need and they're they just right. Yes,
they should have addressed some of this in free agency,
(29:41):
but they're the flaw in my mind with their team
building concept. Isn't how how they draft? They do that well,
they draft and developed well, they signed guys to say,
it's in free agency they don't ever go get starting
caliber players.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
Right, not even the best player.
Speaker 5 (29:55):
Like no, I said, you got to go get the
best defensive end or linebacker into free agency.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Hold that thought, because when we come back like a team, Yes,
what do they do free agency wise? And did they
do enough at the running back position? At werder? Jock

Speaker 2 (32:38):
Hey glad you glad you made baby glad you Mads
ran it out here. Cats and dogs in these streets Dallas,
Fort Worth, and people don't know how to drive. So
Teoro McMillan was the hope for a lot of people
at twelve. Didn't happen. The Carolina Panthers and a tradition
like no other, decide to go take a player at
the Cowboys, like did it with j. C. Horn.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
He's taking Mingo spot on a rush.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
Yes, yes, Mingo is your fourth round wide receiver. I
don't know why they kept trying to sell him to
the Badia. I just don't know why. Just help help
Mingo out. Just act like he doesn't exist till camp.
But oh well, so there were rumors maybe they could
trade for somebody, maybe something could happen here, and that
they know they need a wide receiver. What do they
(33:23):
do here? Because they know and see that we like
our guys ain't cutting it. They know this, ed, I
don't know.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
I don't think they have a whole lot of real
attractive options right now. I mean, there are teams that
have been talking to the Steelers about Carl Pickens, who's
one of the most I mean, he's a dynamic playmaker,
down the field. He's also des Brun two point zho's
it or Tara Owens. I mean, it's just doesn't fit
the character that Brian Schottenheimer's talked about wanting in the
(33:52):
locker room. Not only that he I think he led
the NFL and penalties last oh Metcalf, who they acquired
at a trade, was first among wide receivers and pickings
was second. But he is a downfield guy who makes
big play.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
Free agent wise. I'll go there, just free agent wise.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
A couple of teams signed receiver, right.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
And I bring that up because that's the Mario Cooper
is easy, right, that's the easy.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
Thirty one years old, did nothing in Buffalo last year
with Josh Allen.
Speaker 4 (34:19):
Well, here's my here's my tech, and I have no
idea and that I'm not disputing anything.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
And has a bad history here with the front office.
Speaker 4 (34:24):
Yeah, but his teammates liked him, most of them.
Speaker 5 (34:27):
Uh, they're not paying him. No Covid coach's gunn. He
ain't got to get the jab no more. COVID's over man.
This is about you know, this is about the shot
shot and I don't know about it. I'd have you'd
have to look at it Mario and working out and
all that stuff. But Mario's a vibe guy. Man, He's
he's an intellectual guy. He's a different kind of guy.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
Played chess in the locker room guy.
Speaker 5 (34:48):
And all I'm saying is he's the kind of guy
who if the vibe is not right for whatever reason,
he's not going to perform properly. And so you know,
the vibe is right here and he gets along here
and the quarterback likes him.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
Well, if I wasn't always great here because they traded
him for a fifth round pick.
Speaker 4 (35:04):
See, you keep going front office and I keep talking
about the locker.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Well, he doesn't have to deal with the front office
if he comes back.
Speaker 5 (35:09):
I'm just telling you, if if you can deal with
the locker room, that's that's number one. Can you play here,
then we'll figure out the front off.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
Well, the front office didn't think he was worth what
they were paying him, which was twenty million years. He's
not going to get that now. But the miscalculation with
him beyond Hey, he didn't get the COVID injection and
therefore he tested positive and missed the Kansas City game
and the Raider game, both losses for the Cowboys that
particular year.
Speaker 4 (35:38):
I didn't say he was going to the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 5 (35:40):
You asked me what free agents were out there, and
we know they like to spend a block Zeke, and
so how that goes?
Speaker 2 (35:46):
And so I look at this, Hey, Elizabeth.
Speaker 4 (35:49):
Taylor, Mary Richard Burton twice and the second one was fine.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
I look at this with Amari Cooper and and I
just say, you know, circumstances are different now, and they
I mean, they really need him because of they didn't
go fix this. So now all of a sudden, you know,
I mean, we had some differences in the past. And
then I do wonder about from the coaching standpoint, can
(36:15):
Brian Schottenheimer have a relationship with him that maybe Mike
McCarthy didn't have, and the and this new receivers coach,
that's that part of that. Can there be some type
of it may.
Speaker 3 (36:29):
Come down to does he have any other options? Does
he still want how much does he still want to play?
I know, by the way, you know a quarterback, I
mean I think that has to factor into this too.
If you're Marik Cooper, Hey, at least I know this guy.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
I know this guy, he knows me and if I'm Dak,
I had.
Speaker 3 (36:41):
My best four seasons of my career in Dallas with
this quarterback.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
If I'm Dak Prescott, like, hey, look what are we
doing here? At least let I know where he'll be.
He knows me, and so from that standpoint, maybe whatever
happened in the past, that kind of stuff you go
put out the window because you know what, you're the Cowboys.
You need him now because.
Speaker 4 (37:03):
Maybe you won't Keenan Allen. Maybe he's less of a
headache now he's older.
Speaker 3 (37:07):
I think he years older. He had seven touchdowns last year,
but I don't know how well he got along with
certain people on this staff who came here from the Bears.
Speaker 5 (37:15):
Oh I forgot about that aspect. So yeah, I forgot
about that part. But he ain't got to deal with
He ain't got to deal with flues happened?
Speaker 4 (37:21):
Oh up the past. Peace time to him in a
cafe tier over there and keep it moving.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
That's where your quarterback got to come here.
Speaker 5 (37:26):
Hey, you like me a little bit of a but
that's like I don't like you know, I'm not a
guy who says and I'm very consistent, but it Oh
we got Flora.
Speaker 4 (37:36):
Nois mingo, and we got nine guys.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
One of those guys will work out.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
No, not really. They could all go over nine and
you have nobody over there.
Speaker 13 (37:43):
We got twelve receivers on the roster, right, and they
got one. They know they can play, and that don't
mean nothing. I like to be like, I know this
guy can play at a certain level. I don't even
care if it's an average level. At least I know
what I can.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Amari Cooper beat one on one coverage consistently. Yeah, in
a balanced off him more balanced off enise.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
And that's I mean, for once aecond, I look at
the things with Amari Cooper and I say, okay, he's
familiar with the quarterback, he knows his way around the building.
And oh, by the way, we know he'll get along
with the number one wide receiver.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
Now he does have to practice, and he's not always
find a practice, and he got to run his right
routes precisely, not there Marie route tree, which can be
a yard or two here or they're off. But you
know again, and then you have to make sure that
that his mine is right, like you ain't the guy.
So you got to because when he was here before
he was the guy.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
That's the guy.
Speaker 5 (38:33):
And you know, for some people it's not a big deal, like, Okay,
I realize I'm not the guy, so yeah, I'll take
my sixty five balls over.
Speaker 4 (38:40):
I'll be fine.
Speaker 5 (38:40):
And some people are like, why I'm only getting target
at full time? And see he got twenty Maybe maybe
he could be ten and ten, maybe be eight and
eight or you know, twelve and nine. Why he gotta
be twelve and four.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
So all those questions have to be asked, right, So
the so there's more more work there.
Speaker 9 (38:57):
Are.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
Are you satisfied with what they did at the running
back position?
Speaker 9 (38:59):
Nope.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
I knew your negativity was coming. That's why with the
ed first. Oh well, I wanted to make sure you
got out before it tried to correct you. No, don't
worry about it.
Speaker 3 (39:09):
No, I think I would have made it a bigger
priority in free agency. And I mean I think they
killed themselves in the draft. Again, we don't want to
keep bringing up the fourth round pick in Jonathan Mingo,
But guess what happened in that round. For the second
year in a row, that's where all the running backs went.
Tennessee is sitting right there, six running backs went in
that round. Seven receivers went in that round.
Speaker 4 (39:27):
Is that crazy?
Speaker 5 (39:28):
Like we don't really value a fourth round pick, yet
a fourth round pick is somewhat valuable.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
And wide receivers and running backs were two of your
highest priorities coming into the draft, and thirteen guys went
before you got to pick it up.
Speaker 4 (39:38):
Okay, I just thought about it.
Speaker 5 (39:39):
I think the fourth round pick becomes valuable because it's
the last pick before you enter dart throwing mode.
Speaker 2 (39:46):
And also if you think about what they have done
in the fourth round during the years. I mean, Dak
Prescott was a fourth round pick. Pro bowler, Tony Poulter
was a fourth round pick pro bowler.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
Could Jaydon Blue be Tony Pollard.
Speaker 4 (40:01):
If you don't fumble those huh? I mean he could
be a useful part, right.
Speaker 3 (40:05):
He's an explosive guy, he's a good receiver. But he
seems to me like he's the same guy they just
traded for with Javonte Williams from Denver who led them
in rushing two years in a row and is viewed
as an exceptional third down back and blocks better than
Blue in those situations. So how is he gonna get on?
Speaker 2 (40:23):
How do you use both of those once again, seventeen
game season these days, I don't I don't mind it
because guys get hurt, strains, that kind of stuff. And Williams,
you know, has got a history right now, So I
don't mind that. I mean I feel sorry for do So.
Speaker 3 (40:37):
Can they have an elite running game with the backs
they have on the roster, I would be surprised.
Speaker 4 (40:43):
I don't think so.
Speaker 5 (40:44):
But if Rico Dado plays the whole season, maybe he's
a fourteen hundred.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
Yeah, and none of us think he's anything more jes
A gay.
Speaker 2 (40:52):
And I don't want to, but they need, they need to.
Here's what I think they need to back with more
head agree out Belichick. You know the Super Bowls he
had only Corey Dillon was the one lead dog he had.
He there's several guys here, Andy Reid, several different I
mean you look at the championships. He's won several different types.
Speaker 5 (41:12):
Of pick a two team with Hall of Fame quarterbacks,
many Hall of Fame coaches.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Then come on, man, those outlies.
Speaker 4 (41:20):
Give us something else with a good quarterback and average coach.
Speaker 2 (41:23):
Okay, uh, Steelers, the last super Bowl the won Hall
of Fame coach Hall of faink quarterback. But let's stop it.
Speaker 4 (41:36):
Just see we've stopped this conversation.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
Move on to the next Marty shot. HOI a lot.
Speaker 5 (41:43):
See, we are gonna say nothing bad about Marty because
because so all right, so there you go, so out
of respect.
Speaker 3 (41:48):
I'm just going to I think Blue can bring back
some of the big plays that they got out of
Tony Pollard. I think he can do that. So that
was a tandem situation.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
And once again to hear Jerry say he was working
on something. Who knows if they've just neglected the position
for so long, who knows what they do.
Speaker 5 (42:08):
But part of the team building is it's a you
can never neglect anything. It's like when you got a house,
you cannot just like that's not going to ever fix
the roof because we're doing all this other stuff.
Speaker 2 (42:19):
You got to do it all.
Speaker 4 (42:20):
That's why it's a pain in the butt.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
And if we talk about doing it all in all
the holes they happen where they have gone to. This
to me is that this is a two year project.
Speaker 5 (42:28):
That's right, because they got more holes than picked right,
So I mean, I'm not but your quarterback is now
at the point where he getting older and so you
know that's how you end up missing a window.
Speaker 4 (42:38):
This is this is what they did, but it's a
soft rebuild.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
Right now, you're your your hope is to try to compete.
To me, is to try to compete for wild card
in this division. That's your to me right now, that's
your best case. Hey, how can we just kind of
hang on here and compete because you've got change, can
see some things that are different here.
Speaker 3 (42:58):
I think they're already behind Water Washington and obviously Philadelphia
when the off season began, and they're further behind now.
Speaker 2 (43:04):
And that schedule, the schedule they have the AFC West.
Speaker 4 (43:07):
This is they need.
Speaker 5 (43:09):
They need a miles of Austin surprise. Like you got
all these cards, you think, okay, these are all sure.
Speaker 4 (43:16):
They need a jack to walk.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
L Robinson, somebody pop up out of the blue and
show you a little here. So yeah, hey, look.
Speaker 3 (43:21):
They need they need something for you, Jonathan Mingo, you know.
Speaker 5 (43:28):
That's what I'm talking about, Not for real. They need
somebody who's not on your radar.
Speaker 3 (43:33):
That becomes Javonte Williams is suddenly a superstar running back
that we didn't know.
Speaker 4 (43:39):
He was capable of being Yeah, he found what he
found blue.
Speaker 3 (43:42):
Is better than he's advertised.
Speaker 2 (43:45):
I was like, oh, hey, look at this right, I'll.
Speaker 4 (43:48):
Even give you Cavante. He does something that you didn't
expect where he's maybe he's home and.
Speaker 5 (43:53):
Catches forty passes, but he averages eighteen yards of catch
something something you don't really have figured for. It can
give you something that allows you to win a game
or two that we don't look for, because this guy
came out of the blue.
Speaker 2 (44:07):
Awesome all right, last day of April. Thank you, Jack Taylor,
ed word, thank we done?
Speaker 4 (44:11):
Yeah, man, I get y'all. Fifty two minutes and forty five.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
Chris Pine, thank you very much. Joshi. This is the

Speaker 1 (44:22):
