Speaker 1 (00:02):
The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com
and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
This is Media Match, a roundtable of Cowboys insiders, dropping
wisdom and offering sizzling.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Takes on the current state of your Dallas Cowboys. Now
your host, Newie Scrugs.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
All right, everybody, welcome to the Star at Frisco SWBC
podcast studio. This is the Media Match, and we've got
a fun show for you because it has been a
busy day here at Frisco. Brian Schottenheimy, the head coach
the Cowboys, spoke to the media. We watched a little
bit of practice today and we got to go in
the locker room. Nick Harris, the foot Worth Star Telegram
joining Ri. I got the Hall of Famer Edward also
(00:46):
over at WFAA TV. He is here with us, so
I'll start with you, ed What was one of your
takeaways from today?
Speaker 4 (00:52):
Seemed like there was a lot of music, a lot
of loud music throughout the course of practice. It's new
under shot. None of it was on my playlist, by
the way, which comes as no summs.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Did do some guys.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Artists who were still alive or no anyway, there's a
lot of gunner from a from a football standpoint.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
It was interesting to.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Hear how Brian Schottenheimer sort of forced conversation about last
year's number one draft pick, Tyler Geyton and the dedication
he's made to the off season. I wanted to know
did and then Geyiton was available to us and he
spoke about some of the changes he made and seems
(01:35):
to be a guy who at least recognizes the situation
that he's in and it needs to be the performance
needs to be much better this year than it was
last year.
Speaker 5 (01:42):
Tyler Smith spoke on it too, just from his perspective,
how he's changed this off season, whether it be diet
or what shot. He spoke to him being the first
guy in the building whenever they got back this offseason,
Tyler Smith spoke to that. They said they spent a
lot of time together those two over the off season.
If you're spending time with Tyler Smith, you're probably on
the right track.
Speaker 6 (01:58):
Yes, agreed.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
And for me and you guys to speak on this
as well, the player has to recognize it and want
to be better. To me, it all starts right there
with your own swat analysis, looking at where your strengths,
what are your weaknesses, what are your opportunities, what are
your threats? And he decided to do that, and that
to me is where the growth comes from. We saw
it with Terrence Steele after his first season, where it
(02:20):
was a rough rookie season, he ended up developing into
a sorder. Chat and I were talked about Jayalen Tolbert,
who had a rough rookie year, came back and put
in the work, And to me, that's we don't know
where he'll be come July, but right now, these are
the right steps stick and if you look at Tyler
Guiden's body, you can definitely tell he's been doing the work.
Speaker 5 (02:39):
Yeah, And that's probably the biggest question that this offense
now has going into going into this year. I mean,
you could say the running back spot, but that left
tackle position isn't going to be reliable for you over
seventeen games, whether that be Tyler Guiden or if he
doesn't pan out, Awesome Richards sliding in, whoever it may be.
That's probably the biggest question I would have on this
offense going going deeper into the well.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
It's been such a huge investment in the offensive line,
both with some of the coaching hires that they've made
this offseason, you know, investing first round picks and back
to back years in the five offensive line spots over.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Three or four.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
I mean, these guys have got they've got to be good.
I mean, Schottenneimer's talked about making a priority out of,
you know, controlling both lines of scrimmage, and in this division,
that's of high importance. And you know, Tyler Smith said
today that that Schottenheimer came to him in the offseason
before this all began and said, you guys are the
guys who are going to decide whether we win or lose.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Well, the schedule, I mean right out of the gate,
you got the Eagles, but then you got the Giants.
I mean, you have some serious good d lines that
you're facing this year. You got the whole NFCC we well,
AFC West North, Yeah, NFC North. So I mean you've
got two of, according to Pro football folks, the two
toughest divisions this year.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Plus your own, which contains a team that went to
the NFC Championship game in a team that won the
Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Right, And so to me, I truly believe that we
can talk all all day long about George Pickens. But
if it's lookout that because the left tackle position is
not taking care of it, it's a problem. So so
to me, that was why I wanted to ask Ryan
shot and Hire about the left tackle spot. And also
we were there when when we saw Tyron Smith retire.
You know, for years you were able to not worry
about seventy Seven's got it?
Speaker 5 (04:16):
Last year?
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yeah, right, and it was a problem and they needed
to try and I wanted some answers, how.
Speaker 6 (04:24):
Do you fix this?
Speaker 4 (04:25):
In Geidan's case, I think him recognizing that he did
not meet expectations last year and need us a potential
to be much better is and is dedicated to working
in that direction is really significant because those are some
of the questions people had about him when he was
being drafted.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
And I go back into the question I had asked him.
So many people trusted Tyron Smith, you just trusted seventy seven.
How do you go about getting that trust? And he says,
right now, I got to go earn it. So I'm
liking what I'm hearing now. And it takes action. You know,
we can hear things all day long. The actions he take,
what he does to become that kind of player that
(05:03):
he needs to be, and.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
He still has to be good enough in the end, Yeah,
to block the most elite rushers in football.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
He's going to see a lot of them this year.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
Availability is going to be big for him too, not
only during the season, but he missed a lot of
camp last year.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
Well. I think that's the thing that earns McCarthy and
the coaching staff the most about it was they got
forced into a situation they didn't want to be in,
which was because of injuries. They had to give him
the job and rather than make him earn it, and
then he had a variety of ailments that kept him
from the practice field way too often. Whether they thought
he should have been out there or not.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
Yeah, those are critical times for him. Coming into the
league with only fourteen starts, you expect to double that
in your rookie year. I think he ended up with thirteen.
But whether it be the knee or the illness that
he dealt with, I think he battled and elbow, our
shoulder excuse me at one point a lot of times
where you just wish his availability was a little bit stronger.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
And then there were all the penalties, you know, he
led the team penalties last year, so he's got he's
got a lot.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
To clean up him and Laramy Tunzel can just hold
up a penalty flag on Christmas together and the for
that trophy last year. But Laramie tunzels at LEAs he's
proven it for sure for su overtime for sure.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
I did like when Schottenheimer spoke to the fact that
in so many ways, hey, the system we have now
new offensive line coach, these coaches that he's working with,
this fits it, which if you dive into a little
bit later, what wasn't a fit last year? Put potentially,
but they seem to think that he is messing with
(06:24):
the coaches and now be very interesting to see whe
they go with.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Well, Schttenneimer was here, so he witnessed at first hand,
like he should have a good sense of, you know,
how to coach this guy and what it's going to
take and his willingness to be coached.
Speaker 5 (06:33):
Yeah, and I don't want this comment to come off
as me dumping on Mike Slario. It might anyway, but
I think if you talk to a lot of these
offensive linemen, they would tell you that they weren't pleased
with their progression over the last two years, and especially
as a rookie coming in those are crucial times and
for Tyler Smith that was something he was able to
take into his own right, and I think he had
natural ability that really helped and transitioned. And you know,
(06:55):
working with the offensive staff obviously helped. But with the
guy like Tyler Geiitten, who came in a lot more raw,
a lot more of a Dela developmental project, that development
with your offensive line coach is so important and I
don't think he got the best of the best when
it came to that. So you know, in hiring an
offensive staff from a Schttenheimer perspective, focusing on the offensive line,
why not you get a Clayton Adams who's an offensive
line coach. You go and get a big twelve offensive
(07:15):
line guy who has been proven in that league in
the past as well, it's a tough offensive line league
as well, So getting those two guys in the building
helping with the development. There were things that this franchise
maybe didn't help him do in year one, but now
I think he has all the resources available to him.
It's up to him now.
Speaker 6 (07:31):
And that is to me a positive.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
That was one of the things I took away today,
And like I said, it's all talk. But at least
we've seen, you know, you can look at the player
and tell the player has put in the work from
the physical standpoints, and you know he's doing that. But
at least he's taking accountability. And that's the first step
until you realize that, hey, I can be better. There
are things I needed to do, you know. Off from there,
there's sometimes where I wondered if we were getting that
(07:56):
from Ozzie Smith after his first season. Did he take
account I believe what he could do. So he spoke
today in the locker room. I did not get a
chance to speak to Masie. I was doing some other things.
No many did.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
He was only available for about forty five seconds, and
then he didn't want to talk about some certain things.
He's like, all right, well, I guess we're out. Really,
he does not look like he added weight. It could
just be my poor eyes. I don't know, but it
does not look like he added weight. He looks a
little bit more toned rather than bulky.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
I think the sense I got from talking to members
of the previous staff, and they're now on their third
He's had three defensive staffs in three years, which doesn't
make it any easier for him to have success. But
talking to some of those people, they they thought he
could be an adequate player. They don't see him being
an elite rusher for sure. They see him being maybe
(08:42):
a successful two gap type player, but thought he's just
hard to motivate, kind of lazy, slow moving around even
you know on the practice field, Like those are not
good tendencies to have for somebody wants to succeed in
what might be the hardest position to play in the NFL.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
Can you think of any moment in Mozzie Smith's career
other than his introductory press conference where you were like,
I love the body language. I think it was just
the introductory press conference and he had his mom next
to him. I'd do the same thing, you know. Literally
from that point on, they came in for media day
when I was to working in the building and he
was just kind of walking from station to station and
I'm like, his body language is weird. And then it
just continuously got worse. And I think as he played
(09:21):
bad and he did not show a year one that
he could live up to that first round billing, then
you start to pair that body language with what the
on field production is giving you. I don't know. I
haven't seen improvement from that aspect, and I think that
has a lot to do with, you know, what they're
trying to build here from a culture perspective, from a
you know, ego perspective. I don't feel like he's really
built either of those things.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
I was watching The Last Dance, the Michael Jordan Bulls documentary.
Speaker 5 (09:45):
And Curious Toy Where You're Going Here.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Bj Armstrong was talking about Michael Jordan. He said, if
you didn't love basketball, he could be tough on you.
He said you had to love it, and if you didn't,
he was going to smoke you out and basically try
and make your life hades and get you on out
the building. And when you look at Mazzie Smith and
(10:09):
you hear more things about him from people inside the building.
Speaker 6 (10:13):
There's a guy. Do you love this? Do you really
love it?
Speaker 3 (10:18):
And you better love it at that position? Yeah, because
there's not a lot to like.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
Yeah, Yeah, Thus he said it. I don't like football.
I like hitting people.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
Maybe we didn't put as much stuck into that quote
as we maybe should have, and.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Doesn't Schottenheimer are. One of his things is passion, right,
you have a passion.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
For the game. That's where it starts with him.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
That does not describe Mozzie Smith, not the one we've
seen so far.
Speaker 5 (10:38):
If I could look at the entire roster and be like, okay,
who would be on call for that type of for
that type of statement from Schottenheimer, Mozzie's one. I can't
think of anybody else who's in that same stratosphere where
it's like, yeah, he needs to step up in that
department too. It's Massie. It's Mozzi for sure.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Se happd be like the equivalent telling Jordan, Hey man,
I don't even love basketball.
Speaker 6 (10:56):
I like dunk NumPy.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
And I hate playing defensive rebounding.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
Yeah, yeah, I just like putting on the shoes.
Speaker 6 (11:02):
Yeah. I like dunking on my own shoe.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
And if you're going to have a culture shift and
you're going to say these are the things I want
and you've got a player there that's not getting it done,
that's that's that's going to be a challenge, And at
you're around When Bill Parcells had used a Tom Landry line,
he said, by year three, we got to see something
this is year three, and this is year three of Smith.
(11:27):
And then to me, this is what the cowboys all right,
we got to see something and if you don't see it,
then he should not see year four.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
And and they've drafted two players at that position in
the seventh round, but they had them rated significantly higher
than that.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
So his job is being threatened by that, you would think.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Right, Max to the U c l A kid, Nick
has all been on.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
We face contention from Newie over here on that statement,
I think.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
No, no, look, look the kid from u c l
A exactly, the kid from UCLL. Hey, look I am
this is the replacement the parcels line.
Speaker 6 (12:00):
We are in the replacement business.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
And so you know what, Yeah, they should keep trying
to replace Mozzie Smith, because if you're not gonna show
that you want to be here, and if the attitude
or the body language Jim is you.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Know, hey, look and the production isn't there right at all?
Speaker 6 (12:13):
But year three?
Speaker 4 (12:14):
It is year three, and what better way to set
make an example of a guy. And when you when
you're telling people it's all about competition and passion and
that's what you want. You exile a former first round
pick that says the message. And if he doesn't improve,
if he doesn't earn.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
It right and after year three, I mean, look look
at career Elam. You know, Buffalo said, hey man, thanks,
but no thanks, we're gonna move on. And so if
he doesn't, if Mozzie's not back for a year four
and the Cowboys move on from him, there's no The
worst thing you can do is keep a guy knowing
you made a mistake down the road. Jerry West had
(12:50):
taught me that when he was GM at the Lakers, like,
hey man, Mitch, your mistake and move on. And obviously
we got to get to training camp, but they're gonna
have a decision to make here. And if Brian Schottenheimer
not seeing what he needs to see as far as
those if we're getting down the road in this process,
if we don't see what we need to see, then
you know what, Okay, let's see what happens now. Clarence
Hills of the opinion, there's nobody on this team that
(13:11):
can take that's better than it's going to take a spot,
you know.
Speaker 6 (13:13):
Anybody that bring in it, well, we'll have to see
because at some point in time.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
And you can't tell in drills like this.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
That's why I can't July July is going to be
the be that time. But I would hope he realized
his year three. Man, you got to show some people.
I know it's a third defensive coordinators, third different defense, but.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
This lets that's two new chances to start over. Yeah,
that's which is to his benefit in my opinion. And
what have they talked about the last two years of
McCarthy and this year, what have they talked about improving
running the football and stopping the run? And they've talked
about it for three years.
Speaker 5 (13:51):
That's the thing with jay Toya that he's got the
advantage because he comes in as a notorious run stopper.
Last year in twelve games, he had seventeen run stops.
Mazzie Smith in seventeen games last year a twenty one.
I know it's NFL and CAA, there's a lot of
different nuances that go into that, but he comes in
as a three hundred and thirty five pound wagon refrigerator
(14:11):
right there in the middle to stop the run. I
see him having an advantage on early downs. That's why
I feel like he has a starting competition going into
training camp. Monzie Smith does because you have a guy
who can play and be reliable there on early downs.
And I didn't make a friendly little bet with Clarence Hill.
So if that does happen, maybe we'll have to get
him on the show to tell me to tell them.
Speaker 6 (14:29):
What the bet was.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
Well, the Cowboys got out rushed by six hundred yards
last year compared to what their opponents compile, and they
got out scored up on rushing touchdowns twenty five to six.
They allowed the most and scored the fewest.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
So do they face the rushing leader in Week one
from last seasons.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
Best rushing team in football, one of the best rushing
teams in history. Yep, they do, a team that ran
the football more than anybody else by far.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
And then Camp Scataboo and Week two maybe yeah.
Speaker 6 (15:01):
Yeah, watch out look that they have. They have things
that they've got to work on.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
And if they're going to be a better team, uh,
the left tackle position must be solidified. And if they're
going to be a better team, they've got to figure
out a way to stop the run. And so there
are opportunities for the Cowboys two previous first round picks
to go out and show something. I think Geyiton gets
somewhat of a pass. From the standpoint. They did project
he would be this. This was going to take a minute,
(15:30):
and they're right. You know, things that happen in training
camp or whatnot. So he's at least trying to address that.
But Mozzi's got things he's got to answer. What is
year three? We have got to see something here.
Speaker 6 (15:41):
In year three?
Speaker 5 (15:42):
Absolutely with you.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
I think for both guys, oh, you're right, you're right,
you're right. But but for my year three, there's no excuse.
I mean for Gydon, you're sitting here, okay, you figured
out his career.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
In Dallas hangs in the balance on what he does
this season. Mozzie Smith.
Speaker 5 (15:57):
What's fascinating about Mozzie is anytime we asked, whether it
be Mike McCarthy last year, Mike Zimmer or defensive line
coach Jeff Skanina, I don't want to say it, what
felt like excuses were being made for him, but there
was always a reason why he wasn't playing to the standard.
It's like, oh, you know, he dealt with the weight
thing last year. This year he's just learning the position. Well,
it's you're going into year three. You gotta figure it out.
(16:18):
They they drafted you to be this impact player in
the middle of the defense. You haven't been that, and
and I just I hope we don't get more excuses.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
So here's what I'll say to this, what you just said.
You have coaches, everybody's got. When does the player simply
stand up and say this isn't good enough? I'm better
than this today? And that was where I was going
to go. You saw saw accountability. Yeah, you saw Jalen
Tolbert stand up and say Terrence Steele stood up and
(16:46):
said it.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
And Mazzie Smith had forty five seconds on the record today.
I don't know. I don't know. And there's a lot
of people who they would rather show it than say it.
And Mazzi definitely gives off that vibe.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
But your three we gots we gotta see something, all right,
we gotta take a break right here. But more from
today's happenings here over at the start Frisco, the OTAs

I like to soak him in beer. Just turn up
a little bit, throw a chop up.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
An onion, and throw a little bay leaf in there.
So I'll have to maybe get some eight beer for
that and get a.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
Little You should try to cooking out any places.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
I think it's excellent.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
No pool though, right, And the guy really cares about
his product, yes, like he's not just putting his name
on something at all.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
It's far from that.
Speaker 6 (20:41):
So I asked Troy a couple of years ago.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
So Troy let us, you know, talk to him, and
I wondered, what was the inspiration for this? But he
said he did an internship in college at a beer
distrober so he got in his brain about that.
Speaker 6 (20:52):
So you know, and ed.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
You know, from covering guys like Troy for so long,
people to see him as one thing. But when you
have conversations with him. Man and this dude, this dude's
got a bright mind. I remember for a while he had
the car dealership. When I came here, Nick the first
I bought a jeep. It was the old Troutman autoball
way out for so it ended up doing it.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
It's way out for worth.
Speaker 6 (21:12):
Yeah, it was way.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Out there for back but back then Channel five was
out there, so it wasn't that bad for me. So
but yeah, the old Troygman Autoball and then later on
he had a Ford dealership. So, but Troy has always
been a guy that's it's had a lot of different
things he wanted to do, but the beer was one
that was deep in his heart that he really wanted
to pursue. So he's doing that. And then he spoke
about Brian Schottenneimery, just saying, hey, it's way too early
(21:33):
to exist. I wish him luck, but how do we
really know? And it's ota so Troy being uh.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
He said something like that, there's every team in the
league right now has nothing but optimism about what they're
going to accomplish, and most of them are going to fail.
Speaker 6 (21:46):
Hope.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right, And it's like like the
draft picks. Half half of this class is not going
to be good. It's it's just what it is. Half
of these guys are just not going to work out here.
Speaker 4 (21:55):
But he did also go on an ABC morning show,
Yes on television, and he picked the Cowboys to want
to super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
Yes, and then straight hand looked over. It was just like,
get out of here with that, Troy so So. Yes,
but but I but it made you what did you
do it in jest?
Speaker 5 (22:11):
Or we just you know, I felt like it was
in jest.
Speaker 6 (22:13):
Yeah, like, yeah, let me just do that.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
Well, if if you don't expect a lot and says
as much publicly, then you can't criticize them when they
failed to achieve. Galloway told me that a long time ago,
the greatest Gallowy would Gallowy would pick them. You know,
we're talking about the super Bowl era. So Jerry was
talking about super Bowl every training camp. That was the expectation.
And you know, he would say, so what are you
picking on order? I'm like, I don't eleven and five.
(22:38):
He goes eleven and five, No, thirteen and three, and
we're in the break and I go, you really think
they're gonna win thirteen games. He goes, no, But if
I say they can, they're gonna be thirteen and three.
I can criticize them when they win twelve.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
I said that they underachieved.
Speaker 5 (22:52):
You will only criticize them to ten, seventeen and no body.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
Randy Galloway, one of the greats, learned a lot from Randy.
Remember Rain said, you got to learn it to go
to the idiots. So Nick, you're you're a youngster.
Speaker 5 (23:03):
I know about Randy.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
But when Randy was doing his show and the Cowboys
were Super Bowl champs, Jimmy calls up and basically says,
put in three inch Bowl letters, we will.
Speaker 6 (23:16):
Win the game.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
As a radio host, I don't know if you can
get much better gold than that.
Speaker 6 (23:22):
Is the head coach right.
Speaker 3 (23:23):
Before they played the forty nine Ers in the championship.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Game here yes, with which just set off, Uh. George
was mad. The forty nine Ers coach Man Seaford was
hot about that. It takes a big brass was to
say something like that.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
And he said, he said, well, he's he's got balls.
We'll see tomorrow if they're brass or paper mache.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
Yes, they're brass.
Speaker 6 (23:43):
Yes, Jimmy wrote to check we gotta go cash it.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
And they got no scuffle right before the game. Remember
that in the Kevin Smith I think got into it
with somebody on the maybe Jerry Rice.
Speaker 5 (23:54):
I love hearing about winning.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
I was gonna say, Nick, we're old enough. We covered
Super Bowl teams like that long ago. I could imagine somebody,
imagine Saint Edwards to me yesterday we had a conversation
somebody's midments and being insane that her training gis. I
can't back then, Nick, we could eat with the players
at lunch.
Speaker 6 (24:14):
You'd have some great.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Commersit down, interview them over lunch. It was fantastic.
Speaker 6 (24:18):
I mean it was.
Speaker 4 (24:18):
Jimmy would come over during practices and talk to us
for twenty minutes.
Speaker 5 (24:22):
Yeah, yeah, man, different times, it's a whole different. We
could have a whole podcast about the differences between it
and then a.
Speaker 6 (24:31):
Whole different NFL. But which leads me into this.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
So far and it's and it's it's early, but what
would you how would you gray what you've seen from
Rian Schetenheimer so far.
Speaker 5 (24:45):
On the field everything. I can't put a whole lot
of stock into what we've seen on the field, just
because it's a, it's going to be very vanilla from
what we see versus what's actually going to be out there.
And also they're still building this thing. And that was
one of the questions I had in the press commerce today,
is you know, how much is being put into a
feedback perspective from the rest of the offense. And he
had a good answer there. But all we can really
(25:06):
put stock into is what he's done off the field,
how they've constructed the roster, how he's put his staff together,
how the culture has been built. And it's hard to
criticize a lot of those things. I think, you know,
from a roster building standpoint, I think there are some
red flags that, you know, maybe aren't being dealt with
as much urgency as I think maybe they should. I
think about that defensive tackle spot, I think about corner.
(25:26):
I think you could really use another veteran running back
running back. Yeah, I'm okay with the options at running back,
and if it doesn't work out in camp, you can
go get you one. And I know that's probably easy
to say it if it's tackle or corner as well,
but I do feel like they have a good mix there.
Will it work, I don't know, And I could be
I could have the egg in my face, but I
(25:47):
think with the options that they have right now at
running back, I think they can go into camp and
see what they got first.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
I think he's made a favorable impression with the way
he's spoken and the descriptions and the priorities, you know,
in ing the roster together.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
I like that he taught.
Speaker 4 (26:02):
He basically said, today, go out there and watch us
and watch the intensity with which we chased the ball.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
And I did that, and they did.
Speaker 4 (26:09):
Like, when the ball's on one side of the field,
twenty two guys are on that side of the field
when the play's over, you know, I mean, offensive guys
are running down the length of the field to block.
Defensive guys are chasing the football. But at the so
and and there's been all this talk about culture and
maybe it's different, maybe it's better, But I didn't really
think that was a problem here. I mean, McCarthy always
(26:30):
talked about how great the locker room was. I was
one of the best locker rooms he's ever had. The
guy's been been in the league for twenty years and
coach Super Bowl champion, went to playoffs every year, and
he thought the culture was outstanding.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
What I DAK spoke to it the same way.
Speaker 4 (26:42):
Now now maybe it's not a problem, but now it's better,
that's possible.
Speaker 5 (26:46):
What I think about there is the issues that they
had defensively last year, specifically in those first six weeks
where Jordan Phillips comes out and he's like, I don't
know why I'm on ir asked them or uh there
was another defensive tackle one I want to say it was.
It may have been trying to Julips. Actually, yeah, Kelvin
Joseph a couple of years ago. I think it was
still Jordan Phillips being like, there's a lot of guys
around this building who don't know their assignments on game
(27:07):
day and we can we can't have that, and there's
no attention around that. Zeke's comments for sure, and I think.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
Jordan Lewis called everybody out about practicing the certain one
one hundred.
Speaker 5 (27:15):
Percent DAK as well, And maybe it was a situation
where Schottenheimer looked at that from the thirty thousand foot
view and was like, yes, the culture was good. You know,
our leaders, we had a good leadership council, we had
a good core foundation. But that did not extend to
all fifty three or seventy if you're including practice squad,
and I think you're probably seeing a little bit more
buy in from the bottom roster guys. And not to
say that there weren't guys on the bottom of the
(27:35):
roster that did not buy in, but I think you
have an over encompassing culture now with ninety guys rather
than probably at this time last year sixty five.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Soick Nick and I were there talking with Tyler Swift
and he spoke about how he really enjoyed the atmosphere
that Brian Schottenheimer is bringing, and then between osa talking
about the basketball, and you were there when Goetton talked about.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
I almost walked into the ping pong table because I
the same I forgot that, I forgot that I did
the same thing.
Speaker 6 (28:02):
I did the same thing.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
So you know what they talk about, the ping pong table,
all the attention to Scott and Schottenheimer. If Schottenheimer doesn't
win the next coach, the first thing he'll do to
send a message get rid of the ping pong table.
Ping pong tables a problem.
Speaker 5 (28:14):
I thought about that, like what if they start like
three and eight that ping pong table and will be
that Lucker Roy much longer. It is not going to
be that luck.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
But ultimately, it like ultimately comes down to talent and
preparation and execution every week.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
And going back into your point the holes they've got
holes on here that you've got, how do you feel them?
And you go back to the running back position, Nigo,
what you're saying here in camp? What if we see injuries?
What if you don't see what you need to see,
are you going to go make a move? We've seen
the last two training camps that you could your your
run defense wasn't good. The wide receiving corps after ced
Land was was was an issue and they didn't if
(28:49):
they didn't fix it. So with this schedule and and
the teams they've got, they could fix some of these things.
Speaker 6 (28:56):
It's still not be.
Speaker 4 (28:57):
They could be a better team and still not win
seven games this shit. Yes, with that schedule, Yes.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
So this this thing is tough right now, and I
look at it. It's a challenge here. But so far
from what I've seen in Brian Schotenheimer, I would say
I feel like he's got a strategy. I feel like
there's a strategy and the buy in he's getting from
these players, and these players are they're talking about what
they like and you never know. And I go back
to one of the changes I saw is when when
(29:22):
TCU replaced Gary Patterson and they put in Sunny Dikes,
and the players openly spoke about the differences and what
they ended up playing for the.
Speaker 6 (29:29):
National Championship that year.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
So sometimes a change can be good, a different way
of going about things. And obviously, Shoty was around Pete Carroll,
and we know the kind of teams that Pete Carroll
had from USC and and and Seattle in the National
Football League. They were about competing, guys seemed to enjoy
themselves and have fun. And I think that's what he's
bringing here so far.
Speaker 4 (29:49):
That's what you can definitely see how he convinced Jerry
and Stephen to hire him and give him a head
coaching opportunity. But the way he's up there and he
talks about football with a passion and the insight that
he had and the experience that he has, you can
see how he talked him into this that he was
capable and deserving of the opportunity. And I think they
backed that up for the most part with the way
they've supported him this offseason and in the draft and
(30:11):
in being more active in free agency than they've been
in previous years. But yeah, they still have some holes
on the rock.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
They've supported him a lot more than they did McCarthy
in the first couple of years.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
And certainly in the last year.
Speaker 5 (30:20):
First, certainly in the last year. Certainly he was in
the locker room today.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
I McCarthy, Yeah, Mike mc no, no, no, no, I
was joking, shy, I'm sorry, no, shot, he was what
happened there?
Speaker 6 (30:33):
I ran into him in the locker room.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
So yeah, yeah, I mean, you know in Michael Parson's
comments about McCarthy last year that that was interesting as well.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
Question was work ethic, Well that's how it came across.
Speaker 6 (30:47):
Yeah, you know that. Yeah, yeah, about Zach Martin just anyway.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
It feels bad for Zach Martin.
Speaker 6 (30:53):
Yeah, yeah, so I think there was.
Speaker 3 (30:58):
There was some That guy's not been here much. By
the way, Michael Parsons.
Speaker 6 (31:04):
I'll say this, I get it, I get it.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
This this is one I'll put on the team.
Speaker 6 (31:11):
There's this should have been taken.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
Care of, but it never is.
Speaker 2 (31:15):
And yeah, you're right, so I don't blame him for
not being here. I wasn't blame yeah, you know, I'm
just saying I don't blame him for not being here.
This thing should be done. You want him, he wants to.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
Figure out He already told you he'd play for less.
Speaker 6 (31:29):
Right, figure it out that that's.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
Six months ago he said he would.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
That's one of those situations. I look at the team
like this, This doesn't make any sense. You want the player,
the player wants to be here. You're both good for
each other. You got a new head coach, you got
a new defensive coordinator. Man, get this done. Mainly for
the coaches. Remember when Garrett was was so adamant of Okay, man,
I'm on a one year deal and I don't have
my best football player here. He's out figure this thing right.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
That's that's how Zeke got the record contract, which was
a horrible mistake obviously, but that is why they signed
Zeke and did all the things for his contract that
they said they would never do for running back, and
it wound up being a terrible, disastrous decision for a
lot of reason. It's not the least of which is
it cost him a chance to get Dak signed that
year and Amari Cooper signed. But yeah, the other thing
(32:19):
I thought of recently was remember last year McCarthy talked
about how he wanted his entire team. You have to
have your entire team here in April to start the
off season program. And with the exception of Michael Parsons,
they really have that this year.
Speaker 3 (32:34):
They didn't. They haven't had it in past years.
Speaker 5 (32:37):
Agreed, agreed, you put any stock into Trey One Diggs
not being around here now, I know he would be
with the rehab group, but we see all those rehab
guys out there, Josh Butler, John Stevens to Marvin Overshown, Savonnervel.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
I don't know what conversations have gone into that. You
would assume that he's spoken to the coaching staff and
to Jerry and Steven and said, I think this is
more important and I'm really trying to dedicate myself to
my rehab this time. Criticized me for not doing that
last year, and maybe justifiably so, and so now I
really am committed, and I can get my work done
here better than I can there. I'd like to stay here,
and maybe they signed off on that.
Speaker 6 (33:09):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (33:09):
As long as he's not on a boat with his brother.
Speaker 3 (33:12):
I never saw him. Maybe he's holding the camera.
Speaker 5 (33:15):
Hopefully not. That'd be the bigger scandal.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
Let go take a break on that.
Speaker 2 (33:20):

rooting for rooting for you, man.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
I want to see you back, man, I want to see.
Speaker 5 (35:42):
I'm permanent on the show now. And he stopped showing up.
Is he holding out? We're gonna have a discussion.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
He's doing some reporting on Diggs in his absence.
Speaker 2 (35:50):
Joe Milton was in the locker room very active today.
Here he was running second team reps versus Will Grier.
What do you make of that day?
Speaker 4 (35:59):
I think there's a lot to be made of that
right now at this point in time. But he doing
that at training camp the week before the season starts,
it will be significant. I mean, I think I think
they like Greer, but he's got more experience They've got.
They've made an investment, certainly in Milton. Has a lot
of upside and I saw him do a backflip before
practice even started today.
Speaker 5 (36:19):
Nice. It's tough to do it six' five or, whatever
but it'll.
Speaker 4 (36:23):
BE i think it creates an interesting preseason competition between
those two. Quarterbacks they're probably not gonna Play dack at all.
Anyway last year they Gave lance all the reps to evaluate,
him SO i think it'll be interesting to see how
those two perform in the preseason.
Speaker 5 (36:42):
GAME i think it would help to Get dak in
the first team at least one drive per. Game just
get him out, there get him comfortable pickings out, there you,
know live balls on air instead of it being balls on,
here it's it's live. COMPETITION i think it would. Help
but if we're looking into the into the PRESEASON i
Think milton has a pretty good advantage. There look at
the reps here, today just charting from, today ten snaps For,
(37:04):
milton three For, Greer SO i think there is probably
a clear distinction. There BUT i Thought milton looked a
lot better today than what we saw from him last. Week,
now talking to people in the, building last, week the
media session that we saw was kind of an outlier
compared to how he has performed early. On they've really
liked what he's done and how he's taken some intention
(37:24):
in the meeting. Rooms but today seven for, eight he
had a couple of throws that made everyone kind of
look around, like oh, okay there was one about forty yards
downfield Of Ryan flinoy that caught my. Eye then he
had another one that was kind of on the run
across the middle of the field across his body To
Trey Shawn holden for roughly twenty. Yards but other than,
that there was a lot of quick game stuff today
with both first hand second. Team But milton Is. Milton
(37:47):
you know it's gonna be fun to watch his. Progression
and you know you're not expecting him to start anytime
soon unless there's an injury involved To, dak but you
know you hope to see progression and, development and this
is a fun place to start with. THAT i think
a better place than Where Trey lance was when he got.
Speaker 4 (38:00):
HERE i was interested watching practice just how many balls
get thrown to the running.
Speaker 5 (38:03):
Backs, yeah there's a lot of quick.
Speaker 4 (38:04):
GAME i think that's gonna be a huge part Of shottenheimer's,
offense and he's got backs who have that capacity With
Javonte Williams, Blue thank.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
You that was exactly WHY i was going to. Go
you've gotten the kind of guys, that, hey if they
can make the first guy, miss they're gonna be able
to get out there in some space and they come.
Speaker 5 (38:20):
On so come, on you got a root for the kid.
MAN I.
Speaker 4 (38:26):
EMA i did think in general watching practice there were
a lot of a lot of receivers on the ground catching.
Speaker 5 (38:31):
Balls yeah not. Good, yeah especially good for, you especially For. Milton,
yeah got.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
It they've got to and some of them were unnecessary
in my, opinion watching, them like the receivers going to
the ground to make sure he makes the, catch like
you gotta be sure you're gonna catch the, ball and
then you got to run for fifteen years after. That you,
know that's got to be the, goal and the quarterback
has to be accurate enough to hit the guy on the.
Speaker 2 (38:48):
Move Jake ferguson was catching a couple of balls out there,
today and there's one player WHEN i think of a
bounce back. Player they Need Jake ferguson to have a
bounce back season because IF cd is getting Double George
pickens's getting won one. COVERAG i, Mean Jake ferguson should
and he's a free, agent he should have a good.
Speaker 5 (39:05):
Season, Yeah and that was a question THAT i had
today loaded up For, shoddy but they cut the press
conference a little. Short is and it's probably Something i'll
ask On, tuesday is you've gone back and you've looked
at all the cuts from the past, Season you've evaluated
all these players. Individually what did you see From Jake
ferguson to where he could be? Better where did he
fall short last? Year was it an injury thing where
(39:26):
that knee sprain In week one bothered him a lot
more than we, anticipated or the concussion late in the,
season whatever it may, be you would help That Jake
ferguson has a better year with a Healthy dak and
him healthy as. Well you, know if seven hundred yards
is not, accomplished then it's probably underachieving For Jake, ferguson.
Speaker 4 (39:41):
Well dak throughout his curves about a quarterback who really
relies on the tight, ends, Right LIKE i think it
was some stat like Only Patrick mahomes who Has, kelsey
throws the ball more frequently to his tight end Than
dak has. Done And dak really needs that threat in
the red. Zone they were horrible in the.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
Red zone last.
Speaker 4 (39:58):
Year they led THE nfl into football over in the red.
Zone he's got to trust him and he's got to
Beat he's got to win one on one and come
up with the big catches when there are points to be.
Speaker 2 (40:08):
Scored, look he's got an opportunity to. Eat he's going
to be a free. Agent and, yeah this this is
an opportunity for. Him AND i just think about when
when people talk about how's this team going to get, Better,
well you just some player Like jake Furg you need
to play up to the, level Right and last year
he dipped down AND i know some people thought he
(40:28):
was going to take another step. Up he did not
took a. Regression so he's got to go go back
to being the guy he was two years. Ago and
if he, is then this football teams be in a better.
Place but from a standpoint of having lamb pickings out, THERE.
Speaker 6 (40:44):
I need you, KNOW i need to SEE.
Speaker 4 (40:46):
I need you would hope it was more a function
of inconsistency of who they had at quarterback from week
to week and his own injury.
Speaker 3 (40:54):
Situation that caused his performance to.
Speaker 5 (40:57):
Plummet the overall tight end room not necessarily a red,
flag but a bright yellow. One very subtly is is
that tight end. Position because let's Say Jake ferguson doesn't
make that step forward and he's consistent with where he
was last, year schoonmaker had a bad. Drop today you
he has not lived up to a second round. Billing
and the depth of that room hasn't stayed healthy over
(41:18):
the course of the last couple of. Years you brought
in a lot of undrafted, guys but how much of
those would you rely upon in game. Situations brevin Span
ford is the Guy i've looked at in These ota
sessions of man he looks. Good other than, that it's, like,
okay it's we haven't seen a whole lot From. Jake,
yeah they had some quick game action to him. Today John.
Stevens John stevens is still recovering from the TORN. Acl
he was with the rehab group today and you know
(41:40):
he's coming off back to back torn. Acls now can
he stay? On can he get on the field much
less stay on the. Field and then you're talking about
guys Like princeton pant And Rivaldo. Fairweather we're talking trivia questions.
Now SO i don't. KNOW i think there's SOME i
think there's some concern maybe with the tight end room
if they do not step up early in the season
and provide For Dak, prescott, cause like you, said he
realized that tight end. Position if he can't rely upon
(42:02):
it early, on is that something that they maybe need
to go to acquire mid?
Speaker 3 (42:04):
Season they could have drafted a guy in the first
round who can.
Speaker 5 (42:07):
Play definitely could have, well you, know IF i could,
HAVE i also would have been. Fascinating that would have been.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
FASCINATING i think of this from the standpoint, of you,
Know june first is coming.
Speaker 3 (42:15):
Up, yeah that's how you're gonna get a.
Speaker 2 (42:17):
Cut, Yep june first is coming around. Here so what
could potentially be out there on the, Marketplace and there's.
Speaker 5 (42:23):
Some fascinating guys on the trade block?
Speaker 3 (42:24):
Too a tight.
Speaker 5 (42:26):
End there's a couple of. GUYS i don't think we
can say these on this, air right Be.
Speaker 3 (42:31):
Why please?
Speaker 5 (42:32):
Don't, okay let's make sure there's a double check IN
i don't know if those rules applied to all. SHOWS
i didn't know there are any.
Speaker 6 (42:40):
Rules there are really there are rules. Here But Brian
schottenheier wants to run the.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
Football if you want to run the, football you know
what you need to have a blocking tight. End and right,
now there's no one here known for that in terms
of and having proven it in THE nfl that you could,
SAY i trust trust with cards three things TO i
prove the. Consistency they do not have a tight end right?
Now who you could trust and say is a blocking tight.
Speaker 5 (43:04):
END i Think brevin Span ford you could trust in
those blocking. Situations it's how he carved a roster roll last.
Speaker 6 (43:11):
Year time proven consistency to do.
Speaker 5 (43:13):
IT i got. YOU i got that that.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
Thing to, say, hey look you know proven player in,
games that thing like we've got. That they don't have.
That you got a, potential you know right, there. Potential
but you know a guy that could, say, hey, booms
this is his calling. Card we've seen him do it
here in games that hasn't happened, yet and one that you,
Know schottenheimer has been able to sit up here and, Say,
OKAY i know what this guy can. Do And bill
parcels And bill was always trying to bring in. It
(43:35):
WHAT i, mean it was a position right like we
drafted one, guys can we do next? Year so you,
know he was just always trying to Find Mark Bravaro part.
Two so Here's Jason, whitten you, go you're. Good, No
then he drafted the dude From Notre dame like we
just had another. Guy the next, thing you, know they
bring In martel's BEEN i, mean there's always bringing in
in tight ends and so but he was looking At
(43:57):
god to be able to block for. Him you know
he wanted, that and So i'm just assuming If i'm
going to believe That Brian schottenheim was talking about and
running the, football you're gonna have to have a complimentary tight.
End and if your left tackle position is an, issue,
yeah you're going to need a blocking tight, end which
is WHY i, say you, know Post june, first, MAN
i think If I'm will, mcclaan we're getting.
Speaker 3 (44:17):
There it's only a couple days.
Speaker 5 (44:19):
Away there was a point in the season last YEAR
i think it, was, gosh it's Probably November, december there
was a coach on this coaching staff that it's said
That Hunter lucky is playing like the tight end too
on this roster right. Now and that's how bad the
position group had, gotten whether it be from, injuries not
stepping up and playing to the. Billing that's more of
an indictment on Schoon. Maker reven Span. FOD i thought
(44:39):
he had good moments last, year especially down the, stretch
and that was Before schoonmaker really had that bounce back
and at the end of the year last. Year but
if there's any point in the season where you're saying
your full back at six foot. Whatever maybe six foot
probably flat is your tight?
Speaker 11 (44:52):
End?
Speaker 5 (44:52):
Two that's an. Issue that's an.
Speaker 6 (44:54):
Issue, yeah, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (44:56):
I'm sorry to.
Speaker 8 (44:57):
ME i have to.
Speaker 4 (44:57):
STOP i can't work in this. Zoo there's a group pass,
by a tour group passing, by AND.
Speaker 3 (45:01):
I JUST i.
Speaker 5 (45:01):
Can't they're banging on the. Windows can't go.
Speaker 6 (45:04):
Down To houston with their. Ty you have to worry about.
Speaker 3 (45:06):
It see they had a good title, then, yeah, yeah,
yeah so there.
Speaker 6 (45:09):
You, go there you.
Speaker 5 (45:10):
Go we love the people around.
Speaker 6 (45:11):
Here you know, what, guys it's a perfect place to
end the. Show how about?
Speaker 1 (45:14):
