Speaker 1 (00:05):
The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com
and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
This is Media Match, a roundtable of Cowboys insiders trumping
wisdom and offering sizzling.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Takes on the current state of your Dallas Cowboys. Now
your host, Newie Scrugs.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Media mash Let's ride from the SWEC podcast studio at
the Star in Frisco, Texas. I am Newie Scrugs, joined
by former Cowboy beat writer and the author Jean Jacques Taylor.
We've got the foot Wars Star Telegram's own Cowboys beat
writer Nick Harris joining us now as the Cowboys get
ready to face the New York Jets, the Windless Jets
who lost last night in Miami, Florida. So they've got
(00:52):
a short week. That game will be at the Metal Ends.
So before we get into that, let's just recap a
little bit of Sunday night football. Cowboys forty forty tie
against the Packers. How did you feel about that, Nick,
Because some people thought, hey, this is not bad. It
wasn't a loss, not really a win, but they felt
pretty good about it.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
You tell me, Yeah, I walked out of there, like,
did we just waste four hours of our time. But
all in all, the Cowboys wasted one of the best
offensive performances that we've seen from this Cowboys bunch in
a few years. And that's not to diminish what the
Mike McCarthy offense looked like at times over of course
the last couple of years. But when you can score
on every possession in the second half, and you even
(01:28):
go back to late in the first half and they
were able to string a couple of touchdowns together, and
you can't get a win out of that, man, that's tough,
especially against the best scoring defense in the NFL. Entering
that game. You knocked them all the way down to
thirteenth in the NFL and score defense. But that's what
his team is, and you couldn't do anything with it
except for a tie. You had to get your best
out of your offense to get a tie. Seven of
ten possessions with the Cowboys scoring on unreal.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
These are between twenty five Texas Rangers. Yeah, who are
all pitching and defense and the best in the league
and wors than the league offense. It's just flipped around here.
One of the best offenses. Don't look at me like
that one of the worst defenses. It's gonna be like
this a lot of weeks, fellas, because here's the thing.
I respect the owner. Help ain't coming overshawing, ain't. I
(02:14):
ain't doing nothing special this year with that knee injury.
Uh what's my man's name? Revels never seeing him play,
you don't know if he can play or not. Help
is not coming on the way. So it's gonna be
like this, man, it's gonna be fun. It's gonna be fun.
It's like text tech, something like Texas teching.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
I won't argue with you on revel I will on overshowing,
just because we've seen him come back from an injury
in the past and he hit the ground running. But
you can't expect to get the full solution.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Out of there. That's what I'm saying. You're right, and.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
It's so much positivity coming from you, Taylor. So it's
not Georgia to be positive this. I know this, I know,
but okay, Uh.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
So that say I was positive about the offense, man.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
No, look, after forty forty time trying to find I was.
I was happy because I thought this team was going
to get beat badly. I thought it was going to
be bad. They were there and that that and this
was just my thing. And I asked Brian shot and
high everybody yesterday the press conference, did Jake Ferguson miss
(03:18):
a block out there on Michael Parsons? And he said,
you know, Micah is Mike is pretty good. And then
he said, and this is I give him credit as
the coach. He said, I probably should have had Javonte
out there to help him. But that's also a tough
ask as a play caller for Jake Ferguson to try
to block Michael Parsons, especially down there, something that shouldn't
(03:38):
have happened.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Yes, you're not supposed to ask a tight end to
block Michael Parsons.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
Especially a pass catching tight end, not without some help.
Not without some help. And and I that that probably
possibly could have been the game. But then you pointed
out to play beforehand, they had an opportunity to score
touchdown as well.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Yeah, Hunter Luki coming around around the edge, they had
him moving across the formation. He kind of decked Brevin
span Ford in his back, knocked Brevin span Ford off
his assignment, and Rashaun Gary flew through the whole untackle Javon,
Say Williams, that doesn't happen. There's a walk in touchdown
right there.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
And you can't get those back because we saw football.
You make a mistake like that, it'll kill you. It'll
kill you. So Cowboys offense thirty eight points in the game.
Thirty eight should be enough for a win in the
National Football League, But this Cowboys defense is bad like that.
Dak Prescott had to put the team on his back,
and he did. Dak Prescott forty attempts, thirty one completion,
(04:34):
three hundred and nineteen yards, three touchdowns in the game,
one rushing touchdown in the game, one hundred and twenty
four point nine quarterback rating. In this one rain, Dakota
Prescott did his job.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
No, he balls, Man, he looks. I mean, we've talked
about this son, but he looks very comfortable in the offense.
I think shot he's put in some new wrinkles, some
nice wrinkles with the motion. You saw some like we
hadn't seen the quarterback drawn forever and on that direct
snap to Javonte was a nice little wrinkle. But more importantly, man,
I just think he's at that point in his career
(05:07):
where he's got the keys to the answer to the test.
You know, he's seen it at all. He knows where
he's doing, he knows where he's going, completely comfortable, he
feels good, he's healthy. So I mean, he's just in
his bag right now.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Three seats command controlling confidence and when you've got that
rolling for you the way he's rolling it, it just.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
I mean that thing a couple of people pouring it
out on Twitter, but I remember tweeting it as it happens,
that planing overtime where he's checking and checking, Yes, he
checks and then Green Bay makes a check and then
he checks back. Chase Daniel put a video on Pip
right and then he hits George Pickens right between the
corner and the safety. I think I put tweeted out
right there and like, oh, the Maestro is getting down
(05:46):
right now, because you could. And that's what I mean
by he's in his bag. It's like, and I said this,
Rumo had a couple of years like that before his
back gave out. Where you're not you can't really stop him.
It's just whether they make the catch and whether they
protect him so he can get the ball off.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
And he erased a narrative that has kind of cooked
up over the last couple of years about what he
can do against zone defenses. And he torched the zone
defense from from Green Bay. They ran zone on eighty
seven point eight percent of plays. And you talk about
that George Pickens play along sideline, that was probably his
best opportunity in being able to find a hole in
the zone and he did that. He did that throughout
the night.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Well, here's the deal. If he's going to be good
when you blitz him and he's good against zone, yeah, again,
you don't you know, you don't really have a you
can't really do a lot with them. The only thing
that slows them down, and this is me is if
the defense is so bad, did they get behind so
early that they can't play the way they like to play?
Speaker 4 (06:39):
I e.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Third quarter to Chicago.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
The number of guys catching passes in this game without
Ceede Lamb here was very impressive. George Pickens eleven targets,
eight catches. You had Jake Ferguson who had seven receptions
in the game, Jalen Tolbert four catches in the game,
Cavante Turpin with three catches in the game, Javonte Williams
with three catches in the game. Miles Sanders would two
catches in the game. Floorinoid with two catches in the game.
(07:02):
Luke scoon Maker with two catches in the game, What Yes,
Hunter Lipke was targeted once. And you're just looking at
an array of people who kept making plays, and then
you start looking at the longs of some of these catches.
Here Pickings with a twenty eight yard score in the game,
his long Ferguson had eleven yard.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Or Tolbert with the thirty four yard of to tap.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
That Zack made an incredible throw in. That catch by
Tolbert was sensational. Urby with a fifteen yard connection here,
Floinoid with eleven yard connection here. So he's getting He's
getting guys the ball and getting it down the field
as well.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
So you guys are right, he's playing at a really
high level. But I think he's always been a distributor.
I mean, you could argue one of his criticisms is
he's been too much of a distributor. You know, I'm
always moaning and growing about why you're throwing about Jalen Tober,
you know what I mean? Yeah, because he tips, he
tends to go to where the Reeds taken.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Jalen Tolbert four catches, sixty one yards.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Oh he get the way that number one again after
that catch he made, No, he doesn't. He get to
rock that one for another week though.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
I will say this, the entire receiver room stuffed up,
and you needed that when Ceedee Lamb went down. Not
only was it George Pickens who didn't get a reception
until the five minute mark in the second quarter, that
offense was largely gone until he was able to do so,
but the entire room stuffed up, Turping Tolbert, Ferguson, even
Flinoy getting two catches. You know it was a big time.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Let us not forget to throw kudos to junior Atams
for wide receiver coach here, No CD Lamb. These guys
not just they made key plays in a game where
they The offense had to be good for them to
hang in here had to be If they're not playing
next level, If Dak's not doing what he's doing here
and they're not making the catches here, this game could
(08:44):
have been a blowout. Could have been a blow out here.
But junior Adams wide receiver coach his first year with
the Cowboys. Man, I'm watching Turpin make the kind of
plays that I saw him make in college. He's making
these types of contributions. And then with Tolbert has gotten better.
I know there's some people who were saying that after
(09:05):
a training camp came, do you even keep him?
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Do you move on from him? Right now?
Speaker 2 (09:09):
Jalen Tolbert, A game like this makes you say, let's
see what else he can do.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
I'd still shop him quietly.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
And I make him earn in one every week. I'm
just saying, let's stay right there, Okay, let's do it.
Let's do it.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
If you move on from him, you're trust in Turpin
and Floy's what or you can be. And now I
was saying, are you depending on Mingo here?
Speaker 1 (09:38):
What do you go? Baby? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Mingo is coming back assumingly this week. He's certainly ready,
just awaiting that practice window to open up, and you're
getting CD back. I'm not saying train him before CD
gets back, but I would shop him. I would shop
him in the last year of his deal. He had
seven touchdowns a year ago. He's proven that he can
step into a big role. You know, this year without Lamb,
I don't know, I think you could get something in
return for Look for a team that needs just a
(10:03):
number two, you know, like a bottom feeder type team
that needs a number two. Why not the Miami Dolphins
just lost Tyreek Hill for the year. What are you
looking for defense? In anything? On defense, anybody a living
pulse on the defensive side.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Of the.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Linebacker who won't commit a penalty after.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
The way pass. They had a couple of little dumb penalties.
They had a lot of.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Dumping in a young linebacker. They might have a couple
of years and get a couple of years out of
you know. Okay, all right, look, because are you resigning
Tolbert at the end of the year. No, No, I
don't see a reality where that happens unless he gets
another seven touchdown, seven hundred yard year, which I don't
even know how he gets those targets.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Now, you just go get you go get a rookie version.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
At the time, I was gonna say here with pickings
and what we're seeing up this game, if he can
back this up, been put together, uh some.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
More of these he got a month.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
Tolbert wouldn't be in your price range because you're gonna
have to put it towards Pickens, and then you're gonna
have to They said, Mingo, you're under you're under contract.
Try to get other people, said Turp, And you got
him under contract. So yes, it's going to get to
the point, how where you probably cannot afford him. So
you're you're Adam Grant's books called Think Again. You're making
me think again. And that's what you do. That's what
(11:24):
you're doing. You have the conversation, oh you know, okay, yes,
are you going to sign him? If you did want
to sign him, what would it cost you here? And
you're starting to look at the cost of what because
I would sign Pickens?
Speaker 1 (11:36):
Can we wait three more games? And this is just me.
This is just me. I'm just asking you. And we
were talking about that.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
You give Dack weapons like this, This is what you
can get from him the past couple of years. Man,
it's been CD into maybies, as claims would say. Now
you got two legit targets and a target like Pickings
where hey, man, I'm just gonna put it up for you.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
I mean just but if we get a holding.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Call and a p I mean this this guy we're seeing,
if they keep playing him properly can help make a difference.
But if I'm going to pay for I want to
pay for a difference maker. Philadelphia's got two dudes out here,
Why shouldn't you have two dudes? That's what It's what
I'm saying. So when you say, can I see some
more here?
Speaker 1 (12:22):
I just said. I just said the month the month
while he's that guy. And so you want trust, which
is cool. Trust requires three things.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Time, proof of consistency, and you ask what you're asking for,
Can I guess some more on this before I trust
you to give you a new deal?
Speaker 1 (12:33):
And see, here's the other thing with it though, And
I think this is the blessing in the injury, which
is he and Dak can now find a rhythm between
practice and between games. By the time CD comes back,
he should be in rhythm with like he should know
how to get the ball to Pickings because they they've
(12:54):
had all this practice time because CD hadn't been out there.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Now you forced the table up a little Biteah.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
That second half was the first time you can go
back and look at Pickens's targets throughout the season. That
is the first time you've seen a dack ball get
there before Pickens was a turnaround or it was out
of his hand before Pickens was turning around, like they
are understanding the time, and a switch flipped in that
second quarter, late in that second quarter, and this this
connection is really gonna benefit from that.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
And once again considering this has been an organization's signed
guy so late in the process, if you chumped on
this thing and got Pickens done versus having to throw
a tag on h I would know this. If I'm
Dak Prescott, I would I would be pushing it very
much because and Nick, you and I have seen Pickens
in the locker room, they sit next to each other.
(13:36):
There is a true connection and you can see Dak
being the kind of person first if people if you're
around Dak Prescott.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
He's a good dude. He's a guy that people like.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
But for a dude like George Pickens coming in out
of the situation he was in, there's no judgment from
a guy like Dak. He's incorporating you in there. And
this guy feels comfortable, he feels very comfortable. And Pickens,
I actually think they may even I think there may
even be a I won't say closer, but I just
(14:07):
think there's my I think Pickens needed a guy like that,
a quarterback like he needed that. You know, I don't know.
I don't know if he's had that. Well, he hasn't
had that in the league, but you can see it.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
He hasn't had his whole career. Georgia hasn't had quarterbacks
since Matthew Stafford.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
And see, I was trying not to go there, but
I want to hear them for Patrick Walker. Patrick come
down with the tweets, but yes, yes, but that kind
of guy that I think can make a difference for him.
And and really I think Dax can make a difference
for Pickens, not just on the field, but just in
the way he is.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
Dak is that kind of dude, A young guy.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
If I'm a young guy going in that room, that's
the word that go see him, Yeah, go see him,
uh in terms of what what he's doing, how he
goes about his business.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
And and I think Pickens is.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
A guy that I really after that game showed me
a lot because I talked to by Laffenberg before the game.
I said, listen, sent to Babe Loafenberg before the game,
and Babe said something I was one hundred percent on.
He's like, Hey, a lot of people are saying that
George Pickens is the number one. I don't think he's
a number one. I think he's the number two. But
I think he's one of the top forty receivers in
the game. And he says, I go back to what
Kurt Shilling should say about baseball, says, you know, if
(15:14):
you got to ask if a guy's an ace, is
he really a ace? And I'm like, yes, Pickens doesn't have
Pro Bowls, he doesn't make he hasn't made the approach.
He has potential. He's got that time. We hadn't seen
it well. In a game where there's no CD Lamb
against the Packers defense only given a fourteen point seven
a game, this dude was making the plays Like you
know what, Yeah, yeah, that's that's what I want Dak
(15:38):
Prescott to have. And if I can have Pickens CD
Lamb Ferguson, I feel really good about this football team.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Can't believe you're making me agree with Kurt Shilling.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
He's god, he's had a political conversation. He's gonna take
our first with Nick Harris, John Shock Taylor. I new
he scrugg This is the medium.

Speaker 1 (19:17):
The Jets winless.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Former Dallas Cowboy, Texas A and M star Aaron Glenn,
head coach of the Jets. His quarterback is justin fields.
He's oh for twenty five when the other team scores
at least twenty two points.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
It ain't like he'd been on good teams. Man, that's
such a and this is not my bucket coming out,
but that's such a I mean, come on, man. If
he'd been on some good teams, I'd be like, oh,
he had a problem. But he's been He'd been with
the Bears, He's been with an average stealer team, and
I've been with the raggedy rue.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
But even when he was with the Steelers, he was
four and two.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Mike Tomas, Mike Tom man get and there are better stats.
If you want to say he's part of a problem,
you can pull out that one.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
I'm with jj T here. I think johnsph Fields has had,
you know, really bad luck in this league.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
You see what did you see what he did last
night in a losing effort twenty twenty seven two hundred
and twenty six yards. Then he ran for eighty one
yards in a touchdown. All I'm saying is against this defense,
he could be a problem.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
Justin Fields has led his teams to an oh and
twenty five record when opponents scored at least twenty one
points and twenty five. Fields is the only winless quarterback
out of forty six quarterbacks in this sample over the
last five years with at least ten starts made.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
Okay, so now we're going down to clans Hill Road.
Can we still with his name on the show and
I didn't want to get chastised later. And the Klan's
hill role is he put a tweet out the Cowboys
cannot lose to the JITs, and I'm like, it just
gonna beat somebody this year. They ain't going on sixteen.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
You just tell Shotty twenty two points.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
And this this defense is twenty two points. I know.
So you keep putting that statut you know we're gonna
talk about next Tuesday. That record is what twenty five?
They scored thirty seven points and Dak could only must
have thirty five. I don't see it, man, I don't
see it. I don't see it.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
Man, don't trust Justin Peels.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
I don't trust the Jets. Hey man, we didn't trust
the Giants. Beat the Giants. Hey man, I'm telling you
we beat the with this particular defense. If me and Nick,
if me and Nicker alternating plays a quarterback, it'll be
a game in the fourth and Kayleb Williams won another game. Okay,
so maybe you know Okay, hey, I would love for
(21:41):
the defense to play better. Then we could talk about
how they blow out the Jets. Bottom line, you're not
picking the Jets. This week. I haven't made up my
mind yet. It's Tuesday. It's Tuesday. Hey, what's the line?
I don't know. Well, we're supposed to talk about this.
You can talk about it, you can bring it up.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
It's three and a half.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
See they think it's a pick them in Vegas.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Two and a half, three and a half, something like that.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
Because the defense defense, the defense man's going out.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Allow everyone. Everybody's gonna get to hang in there, right,
Russell Willis has got to go to the way back
this outay.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Like you think Justin Fields wasn't at the opposite at
five o'clock this morning. Let me see that tape coach
late night flight he probably wasn't. Nah, you you know
what I mean? Man, He took chauffeur right right to
the right to the game.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
What noon game on the road. This team never shows up.
It's been bad for years. And against a team that's
owing four, they're gonna be hungry. Against the quarterback that
likes to extend plays with his legs. All the right
things are in the in the pot to make this
a recipe for.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
They should win. They should. But again I'm being very honest.
I don't style point this team this team is not
good enough to be style pointing them. So if they
if they can win thirty seven, thirty five, if they
win seven to six, they just need to win. They
just need to stack Dubbs because if they lose.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
Yes, I mean, this team is the Joshua Dobbs Arizona
Cardinal Performance and the Joshua Dobbs Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
We have seen that before. So could Justin Fields come
out with one of those yes, because Justin Fields is average,
He's not trash.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
But they this I know, I said it during the
Bears game.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
Gotta win this one, dude. They had five hundred yards
offense last night the Dolph I mean the Jets Brest
Hall ran for eighty they had two hundred Russian and
two hundred passes. Okay, and again this defense don't make
me feel comfortable. Man, have to Yes, I get it,
That's all I'm saying. I get it. You're right, you're right.
(23:43):
This team is not good enough to just be like,
oh there's the Jets. Oh in twenty five. You're right,
You're right.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
I'm just saying, man, oh in twenty five, I'm you know,
I put my dollar on the Cowboys by snicker arm.
Speaker 1 (23:56):
What can I put on it? Chris? What can I
put on it? And I get it? Trump? Oh, the
league some being deal some black beam dip, black beam dip.
All right.
Speaker 3 (24:07):
The magic number then is twenty one. Because along those
same lines twenty two. The Cowboys have lost thirty straight
games when they've scored less than twenty points.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Really, since it's twenty eighteen. That Thursday night game against
the Saints, that was eighteen, right, that was eighteen?
Speaker 1 (24:21):
Yeah? Really wow? Thirty straight? Look at that. That's a
great stet right there. There we go, here we are, there,
we go, first team to twenty one, get the dug.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
They'll probably score twenty more points. This defense is we
said that against embarrassing. Yeah yeah, this defensive give up
more in twenties. But you need because again, they like
to run the ball a little bit.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
I'm just saying, man.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
As we when the locker room. Yes, the defense, they're
getting close to get these things. Communications getting better, I
mean about and the turnovers said, they got the turnover straight.
A little bit more communication, Okay, just like that.
Speaker 1 (25:02):
I would like to see it. But Sambourne and Murray
is still out there on a regular basis from now.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
Yeah, you saw Sanborn get taken out for Shamar James
for some points in the second half. I wonder, you know,
they try to explore that route a little bit more
this week. I would like to see at this point
Murray is as bad as that is Murray, James and Clark.
What does that look like? At least you're maximizing the
athleticism of Clark and James. It's not a good core,
but it's it's athletic.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
At least you just said down.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
Yeah, there would I would put Yeah, I would still
Leah found the game and Clark. And that's my next
question is Okay, so if you're doing that, who you're
get to sit? Yeah, if you're putting, if you because
Clark sat Laborn, Sanborn.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Sanborn, that's teachers that Sanborn gave you tea.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
Right there. He showed he showed up with a pink
Lady Apple.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Every day a teacher might get laid off at the
end of the semester.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
Speaking of that, Uh, well, I don't know if he's
speaking of that. It is a proper phrase. Uh. Talking
about this defense a lot of different directions. Talking about
the guys trade by Diggs what's up with him starting
on the bench? Man shot Y making a point?
Speaker 3 (26:09):
You wonder, uh Diggs After the game he said, you're
gonna have to ask coach about that one. So he
said he was surprised by that decision. Uh. And when
Schottenheimer was asked, he's like, yeah, we're gonna let him
get healthy and you know, fit into the for a plane.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
Yeah. See, I'm all. I'm all for sending messages. One
of the things I like about Chris Young and the
Rangers is, hey, we gave you, Josh Young and some
other guys. We gave you playing time to play. You're
not playing to your standard. Why don't you spend some time,
spend a week or two of the miners eating off
that buffet at the end of the game, and decide
you want to be up here. And while you can't
do that in the NFL, I don't mind saying, hey, man,
(26:43):
you're not really playing to your pedigree.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Then you'll make the managers going to the Hall of
Fame walk the plank and go.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
Yeah you good with that with Chris Young? Good with that?
Speaker 6 (26:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (26:55):
I like Chris Jall, you like brus Bochi, I like Christia.
You think I mean this turned into a baseball conversation.
You brought it up. Do we think Bruce Bochie connected
with the clubhouse this year or did he ayes to
them out because son like guys tuned him out as
great as he is going Hall of Fame. Okay, used
(27:17):
to be he don't make no honey. Grandma used to say,
Now Nick Nick over here, Nick over here cutting people.
Speaker 3 (27:23):
So Bruce trading, trading, maximizing value.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
I have a suspicion that if mister Bochie's managing the
Giants or the Braves next year those will be.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
Playoff teams, his message would be new.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
Maybe or maybe those players will be more receptive. I
don't think it's the carpenter. I think it's the carpenter's tools.
Speaker 1 (27:45):
So you don't, like Christiana, know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
Like Christian, you may want to ahead get somebody who
closed the back in the games, just saying.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
No, Now you're a hundred percent true on.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
That, Okay, just say it's like for people people get
on you're getting on ebra flutes. Okay, there's points of
times you can get on any flues. But I'm sorry,
does the carpenter have good tools? We talked about last
year with Mike Zimmer. My thing with Zim, I'm like,
Zim wins some big people. You know, big people here
up front, it's not what they do. So at some
point in time, when do we look towards the people
(28:13):
who are choosing the tools that.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
You supposed to work?
Speaker 2 (28:15):
Wait and say, man, that that's that doesn't fit.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
No. I was correct with you on Nett, just like
you can't have multiple quarterbacks. I don't believe championship caliber
baseball teams have closed about committee.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
Matt ebra Flus took this job. Oh, I got Michael
Parsons start right there.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
I got Parsons and Parsons so good. I can bring
Jack Saymborn over here. Yeah, because he gonna have to
come a long right, I man gonna cover up something
that could be Okay.
Speaker 3 (28:48):
Everybody say, there's an opportunity for this defense to fall
up over the course in the next couple of weeks.
Tell me falling by losing Malie Hooker for a couple
of weeks. One yea Thomas getting an opportunity. Shotty said, yes,
something yesterday in the press conference I thought was really telling.
He said. When I asked him, I was like, Hey,
what do you like about wan Yer? Why does he
deserve this opportunity? He said, he's a great communicator, and
that's what we need right now. He's a very efficient communicator.
(29:09):
So I'm looking at that and I'm like, man, that
tells me wan Yer has a little bit more in
the communication department than anybody else in that secondary and
he's going to be able to elevate them right now,
at least from a communication standpoint. If he's able to
do exactly that's all. That's all it really comes down to.
And if he's able to do that over the course
in the next couple of weeks. He was already rotating
in before Hooker got hurt.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
And let's go in reverse for a second. Whinnie Roy
Williams plays best football with the Cowboys safety when he
had Darren Woodson over there, say he go right here,
what you do? And he was still like after wood
he left, but he wasn't the saying guy because it
was the pairing that fit.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Do we have a timetable yet on Hooker?
Speaker 3 (29:50):
Looks like it's going to be at least a couple
of weeks. They're gonna reevaluate later in the week. As
far as the timeline goes to see if IR is necessary,
But it doesn't look like IRS happening right now.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
But again, you know them toes a tricky man.
Speaker 3 (30:01):
Toes are tricky.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
Toes are tricky. We're gonna take a break on that
tostitos right.
Speaker 2 (30:12):

Speaker 1 (33:17):
Who's gonna be your coach next year?
Speaker 3 (33:19):
It doesn't matter. We're gonna have fun while while last.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
Okay, look, Eric Morris has done a good job over good,
good good head football coach North Texas.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
Washington State OC. Before that, he was the head coach
at Incarnate Word. He's been responsible for cam wore John Mattier.
Speaker 1 (33:36):
Okay, that's what I say. He got a quarterback right now.
Speaker 3 (33:39):
And he got a quarterback right now. He never started
a game in high school this quarterback. So I'll tell
you if you get a quarterback, ask Eric Morris.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
How about his quarterback from last year?
Speaker 2 (33:48):
Oh yeah, Chandler Morris balling of their Virginia's They beat
Florida statele.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Chandel Morris with his sixth school.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
I did ask Gary Patters and during the week before
the game, I said, what turn? What click for this kid?
But Chandel Morris from Oklahoma to TCU to you and
t to Virginia. You know what, take advantage of the opportunities,
young man, Rumble, young man rumble.
Speaker 1 (34:13):
I was going to say, when you've been in the
league six years, you started to get a field for
the nuanced.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
And worked at the keys to thet. You know what,
it worked for Great bon Nicks. Bonnick's been a million
years at Auburn with the Oregon and now he's in
the league and that's out here balling on Monday in
at football. I did not think Bonnicks would be very
good in pro right.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
I thought it, but you know, cam Ward incarnate word,
Washington State, Miami.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
Playing football, Matt playing football matters.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
You're young for this. Getting fourteen fifteen hundred passing attempts
in your college career makes a difference.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
Marcels talked about playing football a number of starts. He
wanted to see that. That's where the Bears truly screwed
up with Mitchell Trubisky. You took a dude who at
thirteen starts. You can't take a guy at thirteen starts
that that high trying to throw him out there.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
It's it's just you ain't seen enough right now. He
didn't even seen the exotic stuff in college. Guy was
third team All acc.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
When if only there was like a big twelve quarterback
in that draft who had like forty five.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
Stars, or the dude who won a national championship in
the draft, you know who, Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly exactly.
So so well, you know this is to me, that's
that's what you want. Dak Brits got play loud football
in Mississippi State, So that's that's what you want to do.
Go find some guys who are actually playing. So when
I hear this arch Manning stuff, and people Cowway fans like,
you know, well, let's just think we'll get arch Manning.
(35:27):
I said, first off, I don't think the kid's gonna
come out after one year.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
No, no, because he got money and he ain't played.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
And the second thing is, and this was before the
Ohio State game, I was like, man, I remember Colt mccoy'
first start against the Buckeye, and it could be easy
this this aink the team to come out here and
just say, hey, I'm the starting guy. Let's go fake
Ohio State and don't end well, I'm these Texas guys.
And then people jumping on the guy. And then you
have people like Paul fine Bomb, you know, annoint this guy.
Speaker 1 (35:51):
Some saviors like stop it. This is college. It's an adjustment.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
Yeah, And too many times people have to look at
certain players who have these rocket ship things happened in
the college or the NFL. I think everybody's like that,
this is hard. It is hard. It is hard, and
you want guys who play. That's why I look at
a guy like Dak Pres got to play a lot
of football and played football to place in the Mississippi
State where they won a whole lot of great players
around him.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
And that's the Mississippi State did number number one. Mississippi
State did number one one.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
Other NFL player on that roster, he's pretty damn good too.
But was that sweet Chris Jones?
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Here's Jones?
Speaker 2 (36:27):
I asked somebody.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
It was Justin Quintey.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
He was doing a former Virginia Tech coach, Memphis coach. Well,
Justin I first met him he was at TCU and
I said, tell me then, Johnny Manziel's story recruiting story,
because you know I heard you guys pass on. He said, okay,
all right, here's what happened. We saw Johnny Camp.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
We like Johnny. Johnny was really good.
Speaker 2 (36:54):
So we were recruiting three guys at the time, and
we were all gonna be able to take one.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
It's Johnny.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Treylon Boykin, who they offered pretty good, he said. The
third guy that we were recruiting was Dak Prescott. All
three guys had pretty good careers.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
It's a fun trio, all three guys.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
And so he said, we.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
Were only going to be able to take one, and
that's the one he took, and then A and M.
I mean, he just kind Johnny just kind of they
offered him. But it wasn't like, hey man, we got
Johnny Man.
Speaker 1 (37:24):
Like they didn't.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
They didn't run out there on on on Sunday Day
say we got johnny Man.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
They ain't say it like that.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
But they ended up getting getting a guy who ended
up playing pretty well for him. But but that was
that was what's happened with U. And then I said,
so what happened Baker Mayfield? It's like, that wasn't me.
I was going, so it is. It is amazing how
all these tales work. I want to ask Dak one
day about that whole experience. You know, I was, by
the way, who was number two? You can find that
out for that because he went to MISSISSIPI said, who's
(37:50):
number two? Who was the runner?
Speaker 5 (37:52):
Know?
Speaker 1 (37:52):
Who was the runner up? In his choice for school?
I was like asking guys, like I've made a live
in asking guys why you pick where you pick?
Speaker 2 (37:59):
And the story often, you know, like basically who who
came in second? You know, it's always there's always a
good story. The one who almost well.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
Talked to Pickts the other day. He was committed to
Auburn for a long time, but it was Miami that
came in second for him.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
Really, as long as he can't go to all now,
recruiting stores are some of the best best conversations in
the locker room you can get.
Speaker 2 (38:19):
They are they are especially for a guy like you know,
George's from Birmingham. R Birmingham is that's a roll tied
town and to go to Georgia. But it worked out
well for him, worked out well for him. So we'll
be interesting to see what he can do again and
against the Metal Ends and the Jets.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
I really want to see what George Pickens can do.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
Another performance from him and then uh, defense gotta find
some stops this week.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
I gotta find some stops. Gosh, you gotta find I think, man,
they just gotta look up under the covers that Diana.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
Look if they can this week go stop the run.
I mean this is imperative. Stopped to run because we
saw what Green Bay was doing against the run last week.
Thirty six carries one hundred and sixty four yards four
point seven yard average. Here Jacob's twenty two carries eighty
six yards. Josh was really good three point nine average.
They've got to figure out how to slow that slow
(39:11):
the Jets down little bit there and then at the
same time keep doing what they're doing. Offensive running the ball.
Javonte Williams has been a dean good running back for them.
Twenty carries eighty five yards. That twenty six carries in
the game for one to seventeen. Maybe upped that up
a little bit more.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
This week now they ran about their office has been
very productive. Man, they're running it, they're being physical. Shot
he's good play card. No, he was, and just like
you gave Junior some props, the offensive line coaches have
done a good job because it wasn't very much drop
off with the man with.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
Three different with three starting guys going.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Now, do we think Nate's going to get any more
playing time?
Speaker 3 (39:47):
I thought that was fascinating.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
You were talking to him yesterday.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
Nick had a real in depth conversation, but we all
interrupted him yesterday.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
And that was tough. I felt back for the kid. No,
but he got in the right tackle for four snaps,
then moved over to left for thirteen snaps after Goton
went down. Guton is in the concussion protocol, so if
he's not ready Sunday, it's gonna be Nate Thomas at
left tackle. Thought he played well in his limited snaps.
You know, there were times where footwork was a bit sloppy,
and he even admitted to that too. But he's still
learning the position. It's tough to ask of a guy
(40:16):
going into an NFL game still learning the position. But
you know, I thought he played well in his seventeen
snaps or whatever it was. But he was shocked to
get in. Was He was like, man, I saw TG
going the tent. They looked at me and said you're in.
He went, oh gosh, He's like, took me a couple
of seconds, got mentally prepared and I was ready to go.
And so, hey, man, that's a good story. That's a
really good story man. And he overcame a lot of
odds to be able to make this happen and spend
(40:37):
of a.
Speaker 2 (40:37):
Year great story and also just attest him it to
what they have done as a staff. Clayton Adams who
came over from Arizona. He's the offensive coordinator, but he
was an offensive line coach out there, and then the
Connor who they brought in over it from Kansas State.
He's done a good job too that these guys have
been able to come in here seamlessly. I mean, dude,
(41:00):
Riley DJ Bass Brock Coffee. I thought it was gonna
be a problem. I thought I thought Michael might be
able to get to them.
Speaker 1 (41:06):
Anything. Ain't anything on them at all. Did a good job, man,
real good job. Now they did a good job. And
then Shoty did a good job scheming it. They moved
to pockets and they had some rollouts. They hit him
with some chips and some other thing, and he was
still disruptive, but he didn't wreck the game. Yeah, and
Dad got rid.
Speaker 3 (41:20):
Of the balls, you know, on Vonte Williams got in
his way multiple times. If you're going to talk about
the offensive lines performance on Sunday, you gotta talk about
Javonte Williams.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
And there's another there's another guy that if you're Jerry
and Steve and you sit around here and you start
to say to yourself, could we offer him another contract?
Speaker 1 (41:42):
I liked it that twenty five years old. You know,
he's a probably best served as a complimentary guess. So
if you can get him for your price then yet.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
Yeah, and still and Nick, you were talking about Nick
nickas our draft groover over here, still talking about going
in the draft and finding you know, going to finding.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
The thing about it is, though, are you spending it
first or a second round pick on a noting back,
because if you're not, then you're gonna have to go
to round four and you're talking about another Day three
guy at that point because you don't have a third
round pick so well, and so maybe you trade did
win for yeah, man, that's an option.
Speaker 1 (42:16):
And that's to me.
Speaker 2 (42:18):
That's the one thing I've I've kind of said, is
that Green Bay pick may be the pick you say
to someone who wants to come and get at quarterback
or somebody and they want a five year deal on
and you move out of the first round, but you're
still high enough to try to get some of the
things you want, depending also depending on where you finish.
But these are great conversations to have here. But maybe
(42:39):
doing a trade down at some point in time could
net you some more players.
Speaker 1 (42:43):
Now you're not a little good trade down right here,
you know.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
What, Especially if you're in like that twenty eight to
thirty two range from the backers pick and that thirty
three to forty at the beginning of the second round,
that's the sweet spot for those running backs. You talk
about Trayvon Henderson, Quinchwn Judkins last year or a couple
more of the year before.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
So that and even evens. I mean, you look at
a kid like Cooper Gjen I remember watching him play
at Iowa, so I thought he was a really good
player there. So you start to find some cats like
that in that second round where for whatever reason, they
don't get in the first, but they're right there. I mean,
Luther Burton, you know there's a guy. I mean, that's
the kind of thing where if I'm going to do
a trade down to the Cowboys, if I say, hey, man,
(43:19):
I'm I moved down out of the first let me
find some guys here who could potentially be starters and
help us a long term. And I think they could,
you know, find a way to take one pick and
maybe get get two three players out of it, depending
on how they do it.
Speaker 3 (43:31):
So just me, I'd much rather picking thirty three to
forty than twenty six to thirty two. I would much
rather do that.
Speaker 2 (43:37):

Dak Prescott recruitment question. He was only offered by Mississippi State,
so he committed to Mississippi State before his senior year.
He grew up a Texas fan. Texas never gave him
the time of day and LSU tried to offer him
super late and he was like, nah, my man, of
my word, I'm sticking with Mississippi State. So I guess
you could say l s U came in second, but
it was really Mississippi State from the jump.
Speaker 2 (44:29):
You know, and loyalty and it worked out well for him.
Great work and cares you come back tomorrow. I'm gonna
