Speaker 1 (00:00):
Homes Mickey Spagnola and the great six time pro bowler
who just arrived from Texas last night. The great Nate
Newton is in the house. It's time to start playing
some football. Mickey, Nate's here.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yes, absolutely, Nates sre Wow.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
I'm excited, man, thanks for having me on y'all show,
and I'm excited. I'm ready to go. Man, what is
the first topic?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
I want to know how many miles you drove to
get here.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Probably about thirteen hundred, took two days. I stopped at Albuquerque,
he got up next morning and came on in, which
was yesterday around about six o'clock man. And finally I
was at a new beautiful hotel over there. I can't
think of the name of it, but it's so sweet.
I mean, I don't play sweets, Yes, sir, it is.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
We're right now at the Staybridge. Sweet.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Everything's changed and this is beautiful out he has been upgraded.
The only thing that's very consistent in the Noah's in
the back.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
We still got leaf flowers.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Leaf flowers have to be out there. Yes, that guy
is blowing grass because they cut it.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yeah, you have some artificial turf here near the did
you notice that the trees are all the trees are gone.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Yes, but the grass is so green man.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
That artificial turf the practice field is natural, yes, but
up here near the tennis court they laid some artificial
turf down. And let me just right off the top,
we don't have the trees the comfort of the trees.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
That's right, we don't.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
And let me just tell you right off the top.
Producers Supreme is on his game. I think he came
up with this on his own. The reason why we
don't have trees here. Now, it's not only here aligning
the practice field, but also along is it Vineyard Avenue
Over there in front of the hotel, they cut down
the trees.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
They got smaller trees there. It's because of the wildfires.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
I thought of it last night.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
So you were ahead of Producer Supreme.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
I thought about why because California was over there going
rolling his eyes. Of course, Mickey head it first. I
just said I thought of it last night, that's all.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
But it's not it's the embers that fly through the
You don't want to take that chance. And obviously they
had a horrible, horrible situation.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
I wonder if the population here increased, like people moved
here because they lost their homes.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Well that's that's possible too, But anyway, we digress that.
That's why we don't have the trees. It is an
overcast day here. Another this is is this the marine layer?

Speaker 4 (02:30):
Is that what we call this? But it was like
this yesterday too.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Yeah, it was just cloudy Texas.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
They just say cloudy. I don't know what else we
call it cloudy yet it cloud I mean if you
got the ocean, and I guess you can call it
something else, you know.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
That's right. Let me set the schedule, the podcast schedule
for everybody today.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
We're here at nine am Pacific time, eleven am Central time.
We're going to be doing Tuesdays and Tuesday and Thursday
this week, yes, and we're gonna do Monday, Wednesday and
Friday next week after us. Today at ten am is
the break, which is noon Dallas time, and then at

(03:13):
two o'clock Dallas time noon our time out here is.

Speaker 4 (03:16):
The player's lounge. But we'll get first. We're kicking things off.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
We had camping out last night, yes, and so check
that out as you get ready for this first practice,
which is just a couple of hours away. Now we've
got Brian Schottenheimer's daily press conferences start at eleven o'clock today,
eleven o five today, which is one to.

Speaker 4 (03:40):
Five Dallas time.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
What times practice practice is shortly after that? Well, let
me tell you. When I was riding my bike here
this morning, probably about eight ten, eight ten, there was
already twenty cars lined up to come in for practice.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Wow, the parking lot's open about now, I think, And
so they're gonna sit there all this time waiting.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Wait until Saturday.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
So the schedule is today, Wednesday, and Thursday. The Cowboys
will practice not in pads. Players day off on Friday.
On Saturday the final day without pads, right, yes, and
that will be the opening ceremonies also on Saturday, and
then on Sunday's first day in pads. And so you
got two weekend days out here where the Cowboys will

(04:31):
be on the practice field. And by the way, that
Sunday practice who will be able to watch as well?

Speaker 2 (04:36):
So just understand that these first few practices this week
are the ramp up practices, which means they're ota mini
camp like practice, no pads, helmets, jerseys and shirts.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
You know, I don't want to put any damper on
any of these guys that are out here like such
us talking heads. But when they tell you that a
kid is looking great today, they have on no pads. Okay,
I want to I'm gonna repeat that a lot, because
what we did last year I think was an injustice
to a lot of kids where they were looking good

(05:12):
and looking great and they didn't have them on any paths.
So we we did the fantasy thing, we did the
Disneyland thing, and so a lot of these kids this
is ex of ot AS.

Speaker 4 (05:23):
The next yes, sir, practices.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
So you say the same thing about ot as any
of those reports you heard that so and so is
looking good, you're starting running back and that's right.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Or just listen to Brian Schottenheimer when they keep asking
about running backs, yes, and he keeps telling them, well,
we'll find out when they put the pass on. You
can't judge a running back without pads. You can't judge
a linebacker without pads.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
And definitely offensive defensive lineman without pass.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
So if you want to play seven on seven football,
then that's fine.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yes, wow, I tell you this, fellas. I'm excited though,
because this coach keeps it real, you know, and I'm listening.
I hope I'm dropping. I jump the gun when they
did to deal with mister Jones and all of his
guys yesterday, and how he just kept bringing it back
to football, regardless of what was said, how it was said,

(06:18):
he kept bringing it back to football. And you know,
and not for a young coach who's never done it
before on this level. He is focused on football and
I love to hear that.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
Yah.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
One thing he's done since he took the job, he's
won every press conference.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Yeah, but he's still a different he's he's you know,
normally when mister Jones and his sons and everybody have
that situation, the coaches normally fall in with the flow
of the deal. But he didn't. So maybe it's something too.
He don't have, like, hey, you know, every year coach McCarthy,

(06:56):
because you know that's my I was my guy. Every year,
he would have a little war cry, battle cry the camp. Yeah,
a theme. But this guy says, I don't have that.
All I have is compete every day. Compete every day.
So that means I've heard that since Coach Johnson and
Coach Parcells, we're going out to compete every day, and

(07:17):
so I'm hoping they keep that compete every day. You
have to come each snap, each practice holds its own
weight and and and I'm hoping it shows on the
on the on the depth chart. You had a bad
week of practice, son, regardless of whether it was in
pass out of past, you had a bad week of practice.
We'll put you down a step and let this other

(07:39):
guy come up and see what he can do. I'm
hoping that. I'm hoping and praying is like that.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Did you notice that there was another tent in the
parking lot that hadn't been there before. Yes, it's the
player's lounge, and I think there's some competing going on
in there.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
Really, I did not know this. This This is you're breaking.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Some breaking news, but we don't in the media.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
Sign in the media, don't that? Yeah, yeah, make it.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
But you've been an insider, so you're able to.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Tell us what's behind those fences over I noticed I
noticed a.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Big, old pretty tent over there, just and it's closed off.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
You see the sign players only. Wow.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
I think I walk in there. There's probably may I
get church and church? You're walking that? What's up? Fellas? There?

Speaker 2 (08:27):
You competition I bet the ping pong tables in there.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
You know, And even that, I'm not gonna. I'm not
gonna let fans get carried away. All coaches trying to
do is let you know every day, if you come
in here through these doors, you're competing for your job.
That's that's all he's saying. And he's he's not trying
to put the ping pongs out there trying to You're

(08:52):
not gonna make the team off the ping pong table.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
But it's a free throw champion. Is that doesn't give
him a leg up?

Speaker 3 (09:00):
It does, But what it does do is to give
guys a chance to bond. I notice, all good teams
that I've been on, we bonded, We played cards, we
did different things, you know, together against one another, you know,
and you learn how to Some guys are sensitive and
you learn. Okay, I can't joke that away with him.

(09:21):
All this guy likes this. Hey, he more of a loaner,
and it's okay what he has done. He's trying to
get guys to know one another. So I want to
put everything in his proper perspective to give this new
coach a true chance. I mean, we know who coach
McCarthy was. He was a Super Bowl winning coach, you know,
But we don't know this guy at all. So I'm

(09:42):
gonna give him every opportunity to get to know him.
And I know how you think from coming as a
player aspect, he wants everybody to get to know everybody
and to care a little bit.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
See, Nate, I love the word you use. Bonding, yes,
because I think people are geting this misconception about when
Jerry talks about I want to see leadership. Yes, these guys,
it's not necessary leadership. It's bonding with your teammates.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
Yes, I don't need Michael Parsons up on a podium
making speeches, but I want him to bond with his
teammates making now. But he did not make efforts before.
And so that's what let me ask you this.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
Let me ask you this because we were we were
able to see that in.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
The media back in the nineties with your teams, because
we had much longer access to the players in the
locker room and even during the off season, we could go.

Speaker 4 (10:41):
Hang out there locker room.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
So we saw that firsthand ourselves, the dynamics of that
locker room, the chemistry, and then you got Nate, you
get Kevin Gogan.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Who are the guys that are yes?

Speaker 4 (10:56):
Yeah, right, Mike. But you got quiet guys too that
still fit.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
Yes, sir, you know, and had Russell Maryland.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
And had the respect of everybody in the locker room
because you knew what they were like. Let me ask
you when when when Dion came? Okay, what did did?
Has Dion ever said anything about the chemistry of the
of those Super Bowl locker rooms?

Speaker 3 (11:19):
Difference? He told me the difference between the forty nine ers,
and he told the difference between coming to us and
it's it's night and day. Jimmy wanted that type of bonding,
that type of competition now, to know where you fit,
whether you like the country music or not. If you did,
like Mickey liked country music and I like gangster rap,

(11:42):
Jimmy would like, hey, turn your music down, Nate. So
Mick King listened to his It was about disrespecting one another,
and that is what this coach is trying to do.
I noticed he said, I text guys. I call guys
not to run their lives, just say hey, man, how
you doing. Do you connect with them? Yeah? I think
he's sincere.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
No, No, godless what happened.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
I think he's sincere. So I'm I'm painting a different
picture than what that I normally did in the past.
Normally I like, like I say, coach McCarthy much success.
I hope you get another head coaching John. I loved
him that much. But this guy is bringing a new energy,
a new vibe. And these are twenty I don't know.

(12:24):
I don't know if it's twenty first century no more.
But these are new built type guy. I don't know
if you say that anymore.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
The reason I mentioned that about Dion is that Jerry
talked about it in terms of Trayvon yesterday and wanting
to see leadership out.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
Of him, and he would when he after.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
The press conference talking to the media about Micah, and
he sees that Micah has that leadership ability in him
and he wants to see it manifest throughout the team,
and he compared Micah he has that personality that a
Michael Irvin has where if he applies himself to instill

(13:00):
that into his teammates and so forth, he can have
a huge effect on this team beyond what he does.

Speaker 4 (13:06):
On the on the field.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
And think about this, how many new players are on
this team, not rookies, newcomers, yes, yes, and a new
coaching staff.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
So the bonding thing has to take place, and it
has to take place.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
Quantically right and quickly.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
Can't force it. But if you have competition out there,
then these guys are all pulling in the same direction. Yes,
you saw it in the locker room when they were
playing ping pong and everybody got all fired up about
you know who's winning. Hey, I don't know if I
could have picked Jay Toya out of a lineup right,

(13:47):
but he was out there, a rookie, raw rookie going
head to head with Michael Parsons on a ping pong table,
and I'm watching this and I'm going I like this kid.
He never changed his expression, he was never intimidated. He
didn't celebrate, but boy, could he play ping pong for
a guy that's three and twenty pounds. And the players

(14:12):
loved it because they were bonding. They were cheering for him.
They wanted to see Micah get beat, right, and he
didn't get beat but it was pretty good competition. And Schottenheimer,
and for the people that are watching, Schottenheimer was standing
in the back and he had his arms folded and
he had this little grin on his face like he

(14:34):
was a father, Like, Okay, this is what I wanted
to see.

Speaker 3 (14:38):
It was pretty good. The thing that Dim brought besides
his great talent of being a lockdown true lockdown Cornhill,
was the fact that he could talk to anybody on
the team. Same with Charles, same with Michael. They all
had a niche, but the hard and soul of our

(14:59):
team was Michael Earth because he could talk to anybody,
He can relate to anybody. Uh, no matter the race,
who you were is a size, whatever what position, it
didn't matter. Mike, Mike connect. That's what he had that
no one else had on our team. And if and
if Parsons has an inkling of that, the magnitude of

(15:21):
what he can do for this team is unreal. If
he if he if that's just if that if that's
in his heart, that was in Mike's heart to do that.
But if it's not in your heart, it's okay. Because
Troy was the boss of our team and it's different.
And he would give you a look like you know,

(15:42):
when he gave you that look, it's like, Okay, I
can't jump off side this time because he's gonna explode
all over me. So and now you wouldn't even think
that of Troy. You see him today, you'd be like, Wow,
this is a whole different guy. But it's a different situation.
These guys have an opportunity here by not having that
so called you are the man. They can build that. Now,

(16:05):
here's only one guy in place like that, and that's
that's the quarterback. Everybody else can find their way.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
Did you ever get the ball spiked out de Troy's disgusted?

Speaker 3 (16:14):
Uh No, I never got I never got that. I'm glad. Yeah,
I'm never going he say that for his running back. Then,
I'm glad I never got that. I got something else
from her when he.

Speaker 4 (16:26):
Was upset with the head coach that succeeded.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
Yes, yes, yeah, absolutely, Okay, I believe we're producer Supreme
is going to tell us that we need to take
our first break here. We're gonna go another half hour
or so we get into what was said at yesterday's
press conference.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
You're full of energy at Dallallas Energy on the first
day of practice here in Oxnard. All right, let's get
into a little bit of what was said yesterday at
the press conference. Bicky, what was your take out of
what was said yesterday?

Speaker 2 (20:00):
Could there have been one more question about Michael Parsons?

Speaker 4 (20:03):
They did you time it?

Speaker 3 (20:05):
How?

Speaker 1 (20:05):
I believe it's a fifty four minute prescot It was?
It was, and I had about the first one third
of the press conference seventeen eighteen minutes was about Michael Parsons.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
Well, keep talking and I'll tell you because I marked
times here. I think it was ten minutes when Schottenheimer
was asked something about the personality and then this team,
and then it came back to we wanted to be physical,

(20:36):
you know, on both sides of the line of scrimmage,
and then Diggs came up, and then we got back
to Micah And so here we can cut through this
very easily, right because everybody thinks that they got the
question that they're going to trip them up and get

(20:57):
the answer that they don't want to give number one. Everybody,
Remember Michah Parsons is under contract. Okay, he is under
contract twenty four million guaranteed over one year, so he's
got a contract. He doesn't need a contract. They don't

(21:19):
have to give him one. Now does he want to
hold out and lose money? I bet not. But the
key thing is also is how much are they asking for?
Because we don't know that. Everybody thinks just because somebody
else got paid forty one million a year that that's
what Michaeh Parsons and his agent want. What if they're

(21:40):
asking for fifty million a year. So it's not about
the cowboys dragging things out. It's basically about coming to
an agreement on how much. And if I'm the cowboys,
I'm not saying, Okay, we're gonna give you forty one million,
because what if they say no, that's not enough and
I got to go to forty two or forty three.

(22:03):
So if I start off with the offer, I'm offering
thirty million a year and then you give me your price.
But that's that's how negotiation's going. But there everybody's acting
like this is armageddon, that this is the end of
the world that he's not here, or he's here but
he doesn't have a new contract. They would do him

(22:25):
a favor to give him a contract with a forty
million dollars signing bonus that he could put in the
bank tomorrow. Now, he's got to work for his money
until he accepts an extension. Bial going to get off
my soap much.

Speaker 1 (22:42):
Okay, So as it relates to today, what do you
expect Micah will be doing today?

Speaker 2 (22:49):
They're not playing football, so there's a chance he'll be
out there doing whatever. Maybe he'll go out there and stretch. Yes,
I've lost track of days.

Speaker 4 (23:01):
Yesterday was Monday, Monday.

Speaker 2 (23:03):
They they basically went out and just kind of condition
team strip. Yeah, and he was out there for that.
So now we'll see if it.

Speaker 4 (23:13):
Was what we used to call their yoga session.

Speaker 3 (23:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
Right.

Speaker 3 (23:17):
The most important thing from all of this is, and
and I'm I'm keeping it football, is that he's here.
And until he does not practice, that's when I'm gonna
begin again to worry when he does not practic, because
he need to be with his team. As Mickey said earlier,
it's a bunch of new guys, a new coach, you know.

(23:39):
So he needs to be here. I don't care about
the contract because missus Jones have not lost the player
that he did not want to lose. So right now
they're they're in that negotiation. I don't care about it.
But if he if we can get him signed be
before they put on them past, that's all I care about.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
So let me ask you this, how involved does he
need need to be when he is here? Because just
this morning in a serious NFL radio is listed. Tom Telesco,
the former Chargers GM was on one of the shows
and he was talking about the hold in a training
camp hold in that's the new thing, and Derwin James
was one of the first ones to do it, one
of his players a couple of years ago at San

(24:18):
Diego or the Chargers, and he said, as that the
way that thing played out, and Derwin James it was
more of a distraction to the team being in camp
not doing anything. He wishes that he would have just
held out in here. So how involved does Mike A
need to be? Understandably, you don't want to risk injury,

(24:39):
maybe on the practice field, but then again, I mean
what needs to happen now.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
I'm I'm with coach because You don't want your superstar
standing over there flipping the ball up in there everybody
out there working hard, especially a few days they gonna
have on pads. If you can get him out there
some kind of way being involved with the players, you know,
and not don't just come out and stand on the
sideline over there stretching. Do something that's showing that you

(25:08):
are workie. Players can relate to that. The media us,
we can relate that when we saw you over there, U,
I was working on a drop, so I was working
on this. I was doing. Don't just come out every
day and flip the ball up and play around, you know.
And because now you go to throwing the ball with
the other guys, it's gonna be distracted. It is because
now I gotta say, well, well, well Michael's over there

(25:30):
throwing the ball and playing around. I see you guys,
because we are part of that distraction too, because we're
gonna focus on Michael.

Speaker 2 (25:39):
So the key thing is they're here twenty six days.
I think I and I counted the opportunities for padded practices. Okay, twelve,
think about that, twelve padded practices. And this is a
new team. Now you get another week once they get

(26:03):
back to the Star right before you get into kind
of game preparation mode, but you don't have a lot
of time.

Speaker 3 (26:12):
To mess around get this thing going.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
Yes, and and so you know, I hear about and
I'm going to go back to what you said about bonding.
So if he's out here, I want him when they
do the stretch.

Speaker 3 (26:28):
To stretch with the team, Yes, not.

Speaker 2 (26:31):
Off to the side and digs playing.

Speaker 4 (26:34):
The kind of stuff. I think Jerry's looking exactly yeah, right, I.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
Mean when Jerry's talking and he's got to do the
State of the Cowboys press conference and start, I'm not
saying he's sending a message to Michael about anything, but
that's what he wants to see.

Speaker 3 (26:48):
And that's why, right, exactly see, and no one challenged
him last year.

Speaker 2 (26:54):
I think the one guy I heard got upsets, Yes,
absolutely bones did. He was like, are you not part
of this team? Because no one else said anything to
those guys, and it's like you're over there playing well.

Speaker 4 (27:10):
I think that's also one of the beauties of Schottenheimer.

Speaker 3 (27:13):
It's a new team, and that's what just moved forward. Yes,
it's a new team, let's move That's what is all
about let's let's move let's just move forward, because uh,
once again, the NFC East is a beast, you know,
and I knowing I'm going off of last year projections
into this year. Our division cannot have slip ups and

(27:37):
you don't want discarnold team, a disconneld team like we
had last year. It was too much going on with coaches, players, executives.
Too much was going on last year. This is a
new year. And Parsons nose, he's seen what good leadership
is about Dak is that he's seen it. So now

(27:59):
does he want to be part of You don't have
the raw rah. You know everybody's but if they are
out just stretching, stretch with your team, if they're having
a team function, either be there. I don't be there,
but don't don't don't take somebody away with you.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
Okay, We're gonna take a break here and we come
back because I'm done.

Speaker 4 (28:18):
With the press conference stuff.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
I want to get into what training camp battles we
have yes this year, because it's unlike many training camps
these days across the league, where the roster is basically
set and we're just here to find out who gets hurt.

Speaker 4 (28:34):
This one.

Speaker 1 (28:35):
There are position battles, young guys, veteran guys like never before.
Like you go back maybe to your arrow with the Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (28:44):
Where when Jimmy first got it?

Speaker 1 (28:46):
Yeah, exactly when when guys legitimately have a chance to
make this team by what happens here over the next twenty.

Speaker 2 (28:53):
So this this probably will be part one and part
two will be on Thursday. Because they've got.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
That, They got that many more mix shots than just
a moment.

Speaker 6 (29:04):

Speaker 1 (31:35):
Okay, we got about thirteen minutes left to go. Mickey
does not think that's enough time to talk about the
position battles in this training camp, but let's take a
shot at it here, as we are just a couple
of hours away from the team starting its first practice
of training camp. Start with you, Mickey, what position? What's

(31:56):
the top of the list as far as position battles?

Speaker 2 (31:59):
Cornerbacks and only probably because of the health of your
top corners Trayvon Diggs not ready to get out there
after his knee surgery. He's starting on pup I would
imagine that will at least at least last for the

(32:23):
full first week, if not longer. This will be other
than one workout during a mini camp. This will be
the first time for the trainers to get their hands
on him and get a better feel for exactly where
he is in his recovery. And then if you look

(32:45):
at that, you also have placed on Pop Butler, Joshua
josh Butler. I was struggling with his first name, and
he might not be ready to play this year.

Speaker 4 (33:00):
He didn't al yeah, December.

Speaker 2 (33:03):
November, so he's going to be hard pressed.

Speaker 1 (33:06):
And he showed some some flashes there when he did.
He finally got an opportunity at age twenty seven.

Speaker 2 (33:11):
And then there's a Savon Revel, their third round draft
choice who would have been a first round draft choice,
and he's going to start on non football injury, still
coming back, and they're being very conservative with him. They
feel like he should be able to play this year,
but again this ramp up phase, let him get out

(33:33):
there and get some more work. Kayln Carson another guy
they they were very conservative with in the offseason. He
was coming back from shoulder surgery. You know, he got
off to a good start last year and somehow lost
confidence in himself and then had the shoulder injury that
he was trying to play. Those are three guys right

(33:55):
there that they've got to see just exactly what they're
going to get out of So to me, there's room
for some young guys to step up and take hold
of an opportunity. And one is career Elam. You know
the Cowboys traded for him. He would spend three years

(34:15):
with Buffalo, never really engaged, had injuries that set him back.
He's got a great opportunity to be a top three
or four cornerback here.

Speaker 4 (34:26):
So they're gonna.

Speaker 2 (34:26):
Need some of these young guys to be able to
step up, and they're gonna get opportunities. But there's gonna
be a lot of competition there because you just don't
easily say, oh, Jordan Lewis is not here, We'll just
put a guy in the slot. That's a huge hole
that they got to fill.

Speaker 1 (34:43):
And the guy that you did not mention, Deron Bland,
is in a contract year, right and you look at
his history. I mean, he had an injury issue going
into last year. He only started seven games last year himself.
And so here's a guy that obviously was playing at
a Pro Bowl level with five pick sixes.

Speaker 4 (35:02):
The year before, and you have to have him healthy.

Speaker 1 (35:05):
But as it stands right now, to start camp, who
lines up at cornerback? You got Bland, you got Elam
and depending on Carson.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
Right, and they've got to find and they if they
find another guy outside, then Bland can move inside on
the nickel because if you remember his rookie year, he
got on the field as the nickelback when Jordan Lewis
was hurt. But you gotta find another outside guy. Is
it gonna be Diggs, I don't know, Caitlin Carson, I

(35:36):
don't know.

Speaker 4 (35:38):
I'm just throwing names out.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
And then there Kemona Hall who flashed last year training camp,
had a pick six in the first preseason game out
in North Texas. Andrew Booth who did not flash. And
then you've got other guys on the roster that are
at the cornerback position, including Troy Pride, a college free
agent who's harming.

Speaker 4 (36:00):
They did sign to Robert Rochelle, who has.

Speaker 1 (36:03):
Some experience in the league just within the last month,
but that's basically animal Kwamu.

Speaker 2 (36:10):
They're considering him.

Speaker 4 (36:12):
Between a safety and the corner. That's what you have
on your depth charge.

Speaker 2 (36:16):
So there's you wanted competition battles. These young guys are
gonna get opportunities, now will they take advantage of it?

Speaker 3 (36:23):
The bottom line. Is this right here? Will the coaches
stand up and give a guy a real chance? I'm
serious that it's gonna be a different name. Give the
guys a chance. If you see a guy and I'll
go back to Bland. I told people when Bland was
a rookie, I came on y'all show many times saying,

(36:44):
why is it Bland not starting from day one? He
lit it up and he's never stopped. If we find
a guy out there that's lighting it up when preseasons start,
let him play. If he does it better than average,
let him play. Are you willing as a coach to
say we got competition? But I only backed that up

(37:05):
by putting the guys who played the best for you.
Let them play, give them for men.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
And they've given Elam a great chance in these off season.

Speaker 4 (37:16):
Words the cornerback position.

Speaker 1 (37:17):
Look at the history of football, the history of the
Dallas Cowboys, and you will find that the cornerback position
there there have been guys who were undrafted yes to
their rookie year emerge as a starter on the teams.
Was one of them is a regular on this show,
Everson Wallas, going back forty something years ago.

Speaker 2 (37:39):
Then one of them was a twelfth round draft.

Speaker 1 (37:41):
Larry Brown was another one. I mean, even a guy
like Anthony Brown. I remember his first training camp practice.
I think he picked off Tony Romo right there. Okay,
dron Bland was the same thing. I think he picked
off that guy day one of camp. And so that's
a position where you can come from back in the
pack and emerge in So are.

Speaker 4 (38:00):
Any of these guys here one of those guys? We'll
find out.

Speaker 1 (38:03):
And one thing that tells me about it when you
got the injury issues with Revel as well as Diggs
and they haven't gone out and signed another veteran guy,
makes me wonder that, Okay, maybe Reveel is closer than
we think, maybe Diggs is.

Speaker 2 (38:18):
We'll see, or they've got a veteran sitting out there
that they know. Well, if worse comes to worse and
no one steps up, play you could bring.

Speaker 3 (38:28):
The guys that you bring a training can do? You know,
quit with the if this and if that, if a
guy shows and for me, it's who's gonna be your tackles?
You got guiding, you got steel, and you got awesome riches.
Are you gonna give these guys equal chance? Last year

(38:51):
Riches every day, practice, every day, played in every game
these seventy five percent of the pre season. Then you
pined him, then he luckily got on the field, did well.
Then you played him part of another game and he
got injured. Are you willing to give this kid a

(39:13):
chance at one of these tackles positions? And then are
you willing to say, Okay, whoever we decide to start
at these tackles, will the other guy be a swing guy?
You got to build some continuity. You can't do like
you did last year and play games because if we
have a strength, it's gonna be on our offense. The

(39:34):
strength is gonna be on our offense, and you cannot
afford to be to be swinging in and out out tackles,
and you have to play the best guys that can
get the job done on a consistent basis. That is
what the competition thing about. During the year. This is
what the competition thing about. Walking out on that field

(39:56):
gnawing in your heart. Like Bill said earlier, it's been
since jim Me Johnson where you have how you have
a chance to really make a difference out there on
the practice field. It ain't like let's just get through
the training camp and let's get back home safely. This
I don't it shouldn't be one of these years, you know,
it shouldn't. It should be Hey, this guy, Hey, hey,

(40:18):
missus Jones, Hey, hey hey, missus Stevens. This this guy
is a little bit better. I know we didn't draft
from here, but let's give this guy a chance.

Speaker 2 (40:27):
So other than those three guys though at tackle position,
does anybody's kind of name step out to you that
can maybe compete to be in that top three.

Speaker 4 (40:38):
Well, we're gonna We're gonna find out.

Speaker 1 (40:40):
Here's what I was gonna say about the depth chart
on the offensive line. That's unusual about this team this
year when you compare it to past years and you
compare it to other teams in the league. Normally you've
got fifteen offensive linemen on your roster, okay, And normally
you have a handful of guys, three to five guys
who are either rookie draft picks or rookie undrafted guys

(41:05):
coming in here. You got one rookie on this depth chart.
That's the sixth round draft pick of Johnny Cornelius.

Speaker 3 (41:10):
That's it.

Speaker 4 (41:11):
That is it.

Speaker 1 (41:12):
You got a bunch of veteran guys, some of whom
have experience in the league, whether playing tackle or guard.

Speaker 4 (41:18):
I mean, we don't even.

Speaker 1 (41:19):
Talking about Robert Jones, who started seventeen games last year
for Miami at the guard position.

Speaker 2 (41:26):
I think he's played. One of those guys's played some tax.

Speaker 1 (41:30):
Actually, Kima Dinejee is another one that they signed who's
from Garland, who has starting experience in the league fifteen
starts in his career.

Speaker 4 (41:39):
I'm not saying that these.

Speaker 1 (41:40):
Are the Sadique Charles is another one that you mentioned
out of LSU who was not playing last year but
made ten starts for Washington the year before. There are
guys that can compete for spots, and it's going to
be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Speaker 3 (41:57):
You don't want like last year when our young first
round pick went went to struggling and it finally got
to a mental and he was struggling. We didn't have
we had a suitable backup, but the guy got hurt.
I can't think his name's no longer with us. Uh

(42:17):
he came back. Uh, well he's with another team. Then
that that force. Uh, this young Richardson guy now then
he got hurt this year here we got guys you
were yes. This year, we have guys like Bill said
that a veteran guys that have played, they won't be

(42:38):
wide out of, you know, like owls. When they get
in the game, they'll they'll be ready for the moment.
And that is what I like about, uh, this this team.
I mean a lot of times you want to develop
players and and and rookies and all of that, but
they're not used to what's happening in it.

Speaker 1 (42:55):
They tell me about your career. Okay, when you were
freshadow of Florida and.

Speaker 3 (42:59):
M I had to go to us Veil, fl by
the time.

Speaker 1 (43:03):
How old were you by the time you got to
the Cowboys and then we're starting.

Speaker 3 (43:06):
For the Colberies six.

Speaker 4 (43:08):
Okay, when you look.

Speaker 1 (43:09):
At the ages of these guys that I just was
talking about on the offensive line, I mean, Cornelius the
rookie is twenty three years old. But across the board
the starters, and they're good ages I think as far
as being starters because they're not too old too. Steele
is twenty eight now. Booker Booker's the other rookie I

(43:30):
failed to mention. As far as tackle prospects. Cornelius the hether.
You got two rookies on the roster. Obviously the first
round pick Booker who's only twenty one, bbe twenty four.
Tyler Smith is twenty four. Tyler Geiton is twenty four.
Awesome Richards turns twenty he's twenty four. Sidiq Charles is
only twenty. He turns twenty six next week. Brock Hoffman

(43:55):
is twenty six.

Speaker 4 (43:56):
TJ.

Speaker 1 (43:57):
Bass Is twenty six, is twenty seven, Robert Jones is
twenty six. Dakota Shepley as a thirty thirty year old.
Nathan Thomas, who was a seventh round pick last year,
turns twenty four next month.

Speaker 3 (44:11):
See the thing about it is they old enough, we're
gonna have to put panthers on them. I mean they're
young enough, you know, they old enough. We're gonna have
to put pampas on them. And they ain't over the
hill where you got to put the pins on it.

Speaker 2 (44:23):
Then mentioned, well let's go twenty five steal in that.

Speaker 3 (44:29):
So they are and they toddlers shorts, and then I'm
happy to have that, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, mama, mama,
I got to use the restroom. Hey, baby boy's doing good.
You know, but I like what is happening here. I
like that guys are young enough, strong enough, and smart enough.
All of these guys got experienced. The only one that's don't,
that's projected started is the first round pick.

Speaker 4 (44:52):
So here's the bottom line.

Speaker 2 (44:53):
I think on those guys that you mentioned their bill,
you got a plethora of guard candidates more so than
tackle candidates. And I don't even want to bring it up.
I have so long term deal that you gotta do
something with Tyler Smith as a tackle, and I don't
want to say that.

Speaker 3 (45:14):
Brother. For the first time in a long time, because
I argue this week with football related people and none
football related people. I was talking to George Hageman played
with US back in the day, and he was telling
me about Colorado. He said, man, for the first time,
we have a center and two guards, and I looked

(45:35):
at them because I had an argument with him a
long time ago. When you have the middle of your
offense anchored right, you can work with tackles, but it
can never be the other way. You can have two
great tackles and them guards the center. Your quarterback's gonna
be running for his life. George, you have a chance
if this booker guy is the soul snatcher that he

(45:57):
told everybody that he is, that he gonna take. So
if well, bb another year in the left guard. I
don't even want to mention how much they don't have
to pay him, because that.

Speaker 4 (46:07):
That's gonna be through the sign.

Speaker 2 (46:11):
But hey, it's guards. Weren't making that kind of money.

Speaker 3 (46:14):
It's time. Let me tell you something. My offense is
gonna have to be the catalyst of it. Yes, yes,
And the quickie you fix your offense, the better off
it is gonna be.

Speaker 2 (46:23):
All right, So you get two positions.

Speaker 1 (46:25):
We got two positions in too much more to get
to on Thursday, all right, So we'll be back on
a Thursday that's much more still ahead, got a Brian
Schottenheimer press conference coming up in about an hour and
twenty minutes from now. Then they're on the scale. And
I said at the beginning of the show.

Speaker 2 (46:43):
Yeah, I did write it down, Chris, Who's next?

Speaker 3 (46:47):
Who's next?

Speaker 1 (46:49):
Got the Players Lounge coming up after that? Like, yeah,
so you gotta go again.

Speaker 3 (46:54):
Now I'm not the Players Lounge. Now I'm hanging with
the boys. Oh hang baby.

Speaker 4 (46:59):
All right, and we'll talk at you again on Thursday.
On mix shots.

Speaker 3 (47:06):
Yes, sure we go.

Speaker 2 (47:09):
This has been a production of dallascowboys dot Com and
