Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're now listening to the Minnesota Vikings podcast. I'm your host,
Tatum Everett from the Vikings Entertainment Network, and it's finally
game week.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Not only will we have a brand new episode of
MVP for.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
You each and every week, which you can also check
out on the Vikings Podcast Network wherever you listen to
your podcasts, please like, subscribe, comment we love that. But
it'll also air right here on Kfan Thursdays at six
pm as long as there's no game now. It's been
a long time coming, but the twenty twenty five Vikings
are about to kick off the season with a divisional
(00:42):
matchup in Chicago against the Bears. To get us primed
for this Monday night game is Kfan nine to noon
producer Eric Norquiz Nordo joins us. In just a second, however,
let's hear from Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell and now
he's approaching quarterback JJ McCarthy's regular season debut.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
You know, I would not discount the fact that a
lot of the times when you know, JJ, whatever team
he's been on, tends to be a good version himself
on game day, and there's a lot of guys that
are talented. There's a lot of guys that can, you know,
light up the practice field every day. But the guys
that can either take it to the game or maybe
(01:23):
even be a better version of themselves in the game,
you know, have those, you know, the gamer, whatever tag
you want to put on it. I think he's got
that trait. I think it's important he doesn't just solely
rely on that trait showing up to Soldier Field. I
think he's gonna he pairs that with the work that
he puts in throughout the week so that he's comfortable,
(01:44):
and then you know it's gonna be you know, it's
gonna be his first start, you know in the NFL.
I'm very much aware of that. He's aware of that,
We're all aware of that. And but that doesn't mean
we put a ceiling over him. And at the same time,
that doesn't mean because of all that success throughout his
football journey, we raised the floor either. It's I want
(02:04):
him focusing on the little details of doing his job
against a really good defense, We're gonna make some plays.
They're going to make some plays. The ebbs and flows
of the game. You know, it's just you know, onto
the next snap and start banking some of this experience
and using it for your benefit moving forward.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
The rest of his presser, as well as any preview
content leading up to Monday Night's game, can be found
at Vikings dot com or on the Vikings app. Now,
let's welcome nine to Noon's very own the mad producer
Eric Nord Quiz. You can also hear him navigating Vikings
fan line after the games on KFA N. We were
(02:44):
just talking eight ten years and you just forgot how
long you've been doing it.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
Yeah, it all blends together. Although every season is like
a snowflake.
Speaker 5 (02:52):
It's unique.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
It can be jubilant, it can be heart crushing, all
on their own right. But but yeah, I've been doing
prime timeline games in particular for it's got to be
eight nine years now, I think.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Okay, so when you when the game ends on Monday,
fan line rolls on, Yeah, what time are you getting home?
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Like?
Speaker 2 (03:10):
What time? That seems like a very late.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
Well I have nothing to complain about because those of
you who travel to the road games, you guys are
getting home even later. But but yeah, it'll be it'll
be one one thirty okay. And then because I'm an
adult child in the end. You know, I talk on
the radio about the team. I'm not a member of
the media. So it's I am a Vikings fan, grew
up as one, and still am. So I'm blessed to
(03:34):
be as close to it as I am now. I'm
I won't go to bed until like two.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Just reading top on it or like looking at yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
Yeah, reading I'm texting Pa to rewatch. I'm no, no,
no, no no, But I'm just amped. I get so I
get so excited for these games. I'm not a player
in the end, there's nothing on the line for me.
Have fun with the late fan lines. You know, some
people have been in bibing maybe for multiple hours, and
they got big opinions. So some of that good, bad,
(04:02):
or ugly. It's all fun for me. But yeah, I
just did. The energy that I get as a rube
is a fan of this game and of this team.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
That'll keep me up late. And then it's just you know,
what are we going to talk about?
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Are we doing rainy days and Mondays montage style in
the morning. Are we doing back on our feet again
after a big win?
Speaker 5 (04:19):
What are we doing?
Speaker 1 (04:20):
I think about that stuff and eventually I drift off
as a rube, which I love that you guys have
that term for it. It just makes it very easy for
me to say that everyone apparently understands what I'm saying.
Oh yeah when I say that, But as a rube,
and you're going into this season, there's been.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
So much off season talk.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
I feel like I feel like I've been talking the
same questions, the same storylines now for months or whatnot.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
And we will until we actually get to see a
game next month.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yes, okay, so yes, full disclosure.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
We are shooting that are recording this on a Tuesday,
and Kevin O'Connell comes into the room every Tuesday with
you guys on nine to noon, does x's and o's
live in person for the second straight year, but has
been doing ex's.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
And o's for a while.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
As a rube, that's got to be cool to like
have that type of access to the head.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Coach for that amount of time of the team that
you care about.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Yeah, it's it's again. I always say blessed when it
comes to what we get to do for that access,
but to be able to do it live during our
show just functionally from how we do things radio wise,
not just as it easier, but I think it's just
it's a more fluid connection point with the coach that
that we get on a weekly basis. And this is
something that Ko was kind of nice enough to spearhead.
(05:30):
So it's worked out perfectly. As long as he's enjoying it,
I know we're enjoying the.
Speaker 5 (05:34):
Heck out of it.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
So what's the vibe that you got as opposed to
maybe like years past, the season openers past, where you've
talked to.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
Yeah, well, I think he's ready to stop talking about
the same things that we're ready to stop talking about
and actually just see it in motion. But I think
he's probably just as excited to see what JJ McCarthy's
going to look like when when everything's happening for real
and it counts. You just think about all the things
that we talked about the summer. All of it's been fun,
all of it's been entertaining. But the vibe I'm getting
(06:03):
from the coaches, I just want to play the game. Yeah,
Like I just want to see this payoff. And you
could see him kind of light up. Let's go specifically
with the defense for a moment with Ko, the coach
kind of lit up when he got to talk about
not the offense and not JJ and man, what a
camp Max Brozmer had and pump for the tandem of
Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
Although I'm sure all of that is.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
True, and he did talk about that with us defensively,
with Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, and just kind of
how that could potentially change the look of a defense
that was actually still fifth or sixth in the league
scoring wise a year ago, how good it was, how
much better that can be, and then kind of the
interconnected parts offensive defense, you know, momentum on offense could
(06:49):
lead to a healthy and rested defense and in some
ways vice versa. The way that he lit up about that, again,
I think he's just as excited as we are in
some ways to execute. Well, we've been waiting all summer
to see when the game's are.
Speaker 5 (07:03):
On the line.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Okay, so we'll stick to defense this time around.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
With that is is there a particular player you name
a lot of the free agents that they picked up
this year, is there a particular player that really just
has you like, can't wait to see him in action
when the lights turn on?
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Yeah, well, Javon Hargrave I thought had one of the
best camps of anybody on either side of the ball.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
I'd probably say maybe.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
Addison on the offensive side impressive, and that's you know
the three week thing. Well, we'll have to get through that.
I'm really excited to see Isaiah Rodgers and Isaiah Rodgers
when when we were talking about free agency and these
things and teams finally got some cash to spend, right
and in the first thing, it's like, Okay, well you
know this guy, it's a seventy eighty million dollar deal.
(07:47):
Is you know, how's Quasi going to get in the mix?
Speaker 5 (07:48):
And it's like, Isaiah Rodgers, what is this?
Speaker 4 (07:52):
And then you started trying to learn, like, okay, he
didn't play this season and we had this thing going on,
but then he bounced back and Philly really relied on
him in big spots two years, fifteen million dollars.
Speaker 5 (08:02):
Is this truly the answer from a starting quarnerback standpoint,
And so.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Then you read up on him, you learn about him,
you hear people talking about him, and now specifically on
a defense as cool as this front looks from a
back end standpoint Number twenty two later in his career certainly,
But Jeff Okudah the Resurrection Tour, We're hoping for the
Redemption Tour in some ways from an injury standpoint, former
third overall pick. But I just want to see what
(08:27):
Isaiah Rodgers looks like in my face.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
So yeah, no, I mean that's such a great point
that he's He's someone that you know, a lot of times,
if I don't know what the player's histories are, if
I'm not really know the name when they sign him
at first or whatnot, I like to hear and listen
to what the coaches say and how and kind of
gauge like what you said about Kevin o'connelly, like their
vibe and just the excitement that you see, Like the
(08:52):
little smirk that you see on Brian floor as when
he talks about his excitement for Isaiah Rodgers is like, okay,
so this truly is like he's got this.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Defense retooled to exactly what he wants to be.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
I feel like they're very intentional with the types of
players they have at each one, because I.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Think we've all said this in some sense of the matter.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
In the last like two seasons that you know, Brian
Flores is working with what was left over from a
couple of defensive coordinators ago and whatnot with those longer deals.
And now that they've been able to pick up all
these new free agents in the front end, some in
the back end, and they're filling in with all these
undrafted free agents or guys that they really targeted in
the draftic of Kobe.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
King and whatnot.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
It feels like Flores is finally like, you know, he's
the mad scientist. So what am I thinking? Like, maybe
the right ingredients to make this, like you know, defensive
potion happened.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
I don't know that was that was a stretch.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
I like it.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
The route you're going down is perfect because I think,
you know this is you know, Flores has worked with
and he's had probably some impact and influence on guys
throughout Quacy and Ko's tenure in terms of who they
brought in. But you just think about a team that
has had to send an extra guy a lot, you
know when you talk about blitzing. So it's like, if
(10:11):
we could, if we could shore up the defensive front
to his stage where we know Van I mean, think
about it. You draft Dallas Turner a year ago in
the first round and he had a good camp.
Speaker 5 (10:19):
Excited for year two.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Want to see him on the field more, but he
couldn't get on the field a year ago because Van
Ginkel was so good. Jonathan Renard healthy jumps out of
his shoes and expecting more of that and more of
the same in twenty twenty five. But the ability if
we're able to find that thrust, find that rush from
our defensive front without sending an extra guy and blitzing
(10:41):
as often as we've had to do among the highest
in blitz rates the last two seasons and Floresa's grow.
You have to have some optimism in terms of that.
So Isaiah Rodgers absolutely would of a lot of cool
things coming our way here on Monday night. Isaiah Rodgers
is one that I'm really pumped about.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
We'll have more with Nordo on the Minnesota Vikings podcast

(11:46):
Back with more from Eric Nordquist otherwise known as Nordo
the Mad Producer.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
I know where. We've been playing in a guillotine league
together for a while.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
It's literally called the Mad Producer League, which I think
is pretty I didn't get it at fur because I started, like, what,
this is my fifth year?
Speaker 2 (12:02):
I started five years ago, So I didn't get it
at first.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
But mad Mad Hatter, that's it?
Speaker 2 (12:07):
Okay, where's is the Mad Hatter?
Speaker 5 (12:08):
Pa? I think?
Speaker 4 (12:09):
So?
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Okay, got it?
Speaker 5 (12:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:11):
Looking forward to this year and obviously I think a
lot of people.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
I got JJ McCarthy on my team.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
I saw that.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
I saw that somebody had to do it, and I'm
going to someone had.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
To do it.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
So well.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
That brings me to ask you that you have the
belief you are a roub you this is the guy
for the next you know, the next generation of Vikings quarterbacks.
And obviously everyone is so excited to see him go
out there and do it.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
He hopefully will.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
You know what he's done his whole career, which is
just be an absolute success at every level. Expectations for him,
you know, do you do? You set them to a
level where I guess what I'm trying to say is like,
you know, if he comes out and it's a team
performance and maybe he didn't have his best outing, like
you're not all out on him, right?
Speaker 4 (12:55):
So you know, even Sam Darnold a year ago down
in Jacksonville, he throws two or three picks saying, we
got to have what is it Parker Romo kick us
to kick us to victory with those four field goals.
I actually, I do anticipate that JJ's going to have
one of those games. I do anticipate and when that happens,
there's so many different factors. I think he's going to
(13:15):
be good. I have the optimism that he along with
Kevin O'Connell because again after this season, like fourteen wins.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
We talked about expectations and things.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
Kevin O'Connell could have re up Sam Darnold, he could
have gone a different route. There were rumors that may
be a future Hall of Fame longtime Packers quarterback actually
was kind of efforting his way to maybe be a
part of this mix, and he would have taken in
some ways a discount, but he chose JJ. Okay, so
the expectation should remain. Then if your coach of the
(13:46):
year says this is the guy we're going with, well
now this better be good. And I also love what
I've seen, so that all of this lends to optimism
for me. I do believe he's going to have some mistakes.
I believe that he's going to throw a bad pass
that's picked off, he's going to have an awful read,
he's not going to go on to the next read,
and he's going to take a bad sack at times.
Speaker 5 (14:06):
He's going to think that.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
He can work with his legs, but all these guys
in the NFL were the best in college at one point.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
He's going to take a back again. There will be mistakes.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Yeah, what's cool about this and the faith that I
have him, is the ability to learn from him, the
ability and his connection with the coach to progress Week
eighteen JJ McCarthy, I think is going to look a
heck of a lot better than Monday Night Week one,
JJ McCarthy. And then where's it going to come from.
It's going to come on money down, So third downs
those need to be good. Out of the gates, there's
(14:38):
a lot you can tell, even maybe in moments of
a lack of success, that the decision making was there.
You understand why things are happening right, Like, that's what
I'm looking for.
Speaker 5 (14:47):
I'm looking for a maturity. I'm looking for.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
Leadership and poise out of the gates. I just think
this is a kid the lights aren't too bright for him.
The way that he carries himself, the way that he
handles himself, That's what I'm really looking forward to. So
up in down, I feel like I'm kind of limping
into this. I believe that he's going to have an
awful game and it's going to be frustrated.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
I mean, what Lamar Jackson will have an awful game.
Josh Allen just has a bad game.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
I mean, it happens, It happens, and I just think
the growing pains will be really interesting.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
To see play out.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
I feel like this coaching staff, team GM, whatever you
want to say about this organization, I think that they've
worked extremely hard the last two seasons to build something
around him to where you know, they don't need him
to win the game. They're going to ask him to
maybe make a game saving play on third down, you know,
once or twice a game. It's it's not necessarily all
(15:39):
on JJ McCarthy, which is what a great young quarterback
to walk into a situation like that.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
I know, it's crazy.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
It's crazy, beefed up O line up defensive front, the
coaching around him, some of the highlight talent skill positions
going to get the back way, how about it.
Speaker 5 (15:55):
So he's just got to take that and run with.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
Of course it's funny.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
So I I spoke to TJ Hockinson last week about
JJ and asked him about it. I mean, he said,
it's just there's just his swagger translates directly into the huddle.
So when you mentioned, like, how will he lead the
team on that, I think it's already there. Like, I
think it's established and from what I've heard from not
only TJ. But several other players on that side of
the ball, they just they they he steps up. He
(16:22):
demands TJ literacy, He demands a lot out of us,
which is awesome to hear from a twenty two year
old who's like looking up at the you know, the
seven year veteran and TJ Hawkinson demanding things out of them.
And obviously, you know, they built their relationships relationship up
this offseason with their throwing sessions in Nashville and things
(16:44):
like that. But it is really interesting to hear everyone
talk about him. I'm just I just go back to gosh,
I just want to see.
Speaker 5 (16:52):
It a game and we're almost there.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
I know we're really close, aren't We're.
Speaker 4 (16:55):
We're almost there, and you know that, how does that
swagger look in third quarter after a bad play? How
does that swagger look in the fourth quarter? Down seven
and the gotta have it? How does it look in
the red zone? How does it look in third and
potentially long? That's again those things that you look for
as far as how he's growing and coming along.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
I want to see that. I think it's going to
be good.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
I think it would be good to t says he's
a long career ahead of him, which I thought was
really nice.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
He is our Game Day Live interview the week, which
is TJ is hocket.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Okay, so that all air on Vikings Game Day Live,
which we're really excited about.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
I'm excited for TJ.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Yes, me too.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
It should be healthy, healthy, feel grateful you what he
said which was so interesting. He's had twelve quarterbacks in
seven seasons, so like he's just kind of.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Been yeah yeah, well, I mean but he was here
for the I mean he was here for the year
that we were like, yeah, Jaron Hall, Yeah, okay, so three.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
Yeah, you know, let's talk about something exciting. I haven't
asked you as a Rube fan. Alright, Rube about the
return of Minnesote.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
I'm the feeling.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
Yeah, I mean, when you started seeing those rumors, what
was the first thing that went through your mind.
Speaker 4 (18:06):
Well, I didn't think I shouldn't say I didn't think
it was possible. I didn't think that that was a
real thing that was going to happen. I was too
locked in on what are we going to do at
the punt and kick return spots? And I'm just thinking
from a salary standpoint, and we're really going to go
all in here all in. It's not a ton of cash,
but Addison's only out a few weeks, and then you
(18:26):
start kind of seeing the way that you know, this
depth that we were kind of excited about with the
wide receiver Corps, it just continued to take hit after
a hit, and so I honestly completely dismissed it until
a couple of days before it happened. And it's like, well,
if it is gonna, Man, he's so good in the
red zone.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
I don't know how much I don't know how much
speed he has.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
Yeah, It's it's just cool being being able to meet
like a Chad Greenway and just kind of understand these guys' mindsets,
the ability to retire with either of the team they
started with. Greenway played his whole career here. But but
I know, in some ways, I think I would bet
even after he left and good times and had some
cool moments with the Panthers, I bet there was part
(19:06):
of Adam that's like, man, I'd love to find my
way back to Minnesota if I can.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
He's getting to live that out.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
So I'm happy for him, and it's pretty nice having
Fling as an option here in this passing offense.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
Yeah, especially because I love the respect that's there from
both sides. Have a good time, do your thing, and
then to come and be welcomed back here. I mean,
can you imagine what us Bank Sadame is going to
be like Sunday Night Football Week two when Adam Thlen
runs out.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
Of the dragon Head. No, it's I mean the roof's
going to blow off on the place.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
It's going to be yeah, one hundred and sixty decibowls
of aust Yes, No, it's.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
Gonna be great. I'm really happy for him.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
And then just kind of bringing it back to you know,
talking about things you want to see.
Speaker 5 (19:50):
He's gonna be ready to rock and he was going
to practice kind of staymbow. Yeah, so we know he's fit,
we know he's in shape.
Speaker 4 (19:58):
You know number eighteen is going to get is and
Hawkinson so pumped for what he's going to be able
to provide, but feeling rate in that mix as another
option and specifically in the red zone.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
Good things coming our way for sure.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Okay, one more thing before we let you get back
to your regularly planned schedule.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
Early early hopes.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
For Monday night, you know, obviously again We're on a
Tuesday right now, folks.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
If you haven't heard that, say that yesterday. It is
a Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
So we got some early early hopes from you on
what do you see happening on Monday?
Speaker 4 (20:31):
All this focus on the passing game and feeling and
what JJ is going to do. Want I want to
see them run the ball effectively. We're thinking, oh man,
it's so good to get Ben Johnson in this whole tour.
Caleb Williams down to the studs thing and rebuilt him
from scratch. I'm happy we're getting him week one and
so defense feasting on a guy that.
Speaker 5 (20:51):
Loves taking sacks. He's almost like addicted to it.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
The sixty eight a year ago. Let's feast on that
week one, and then on the other side. I want
