Speaker 2 (00:27):
Welcome to the New Orleans Saints Podcast. I'm Aaron Summers
alongside Brandon Cooks, recently signed again wide receiver here with
the Saints. How are you doing?
Speaker 3 (00:36):
I'm doing great. How about you?
Speaker 2 (00:37):
So I am doing good? Can we take it back
to May eighth, twenty fourteen. What do you remember about
that day?
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Well, that was a long day, a lot of sweating
going on in the green room, but one of the
best days of my life obviously with my family being
out there in New York and hear your name called
on draft night. It's not a feeling that you can really,
you know, match that for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
That's when you were drafted by the Saints. Got to
start your career here. What do you remember most about
your first.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
Stint, Well, my first encounter or my first memory was
getting a text from Drew. Obviously, everybody and their moms
knew who Drew Brees was, so to receive that text
for him, you know, meant the warld. I just was
excited to get to work. But I just remember getting
off the plane, you know, my West Coast kid and
coming down to the South. First experience in the South.
(01:33):
I was like, you know, it's a whole different world
and just came to grow you know, grow on me
so many special memories. I wasn't then half kids then
now I got wife and kids now, so it's a
full circle moment.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I look forward to it for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah, things are a little bit different around here for everybody.
I think walking back into the facility, what was that
like for you?
Speaker 4 (01:54):
It was awesome when that The facilities are unbelievable, are great.
I mean every little uh you know interest redone since
I was here. So it's cool to see just you know,
everything you know come to life and all the new
things that they you know, built in and ms be
is put into the team.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
It's great to see for sure.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
And then you had your two little ones with you,
so they get to see and see you play Saints.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
It's great because like I said, I didn't have kids
last time, so now uh to be able to have
this experience with them and kind of be able to
share with him.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
You know, this was that where that used to be.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
And I think it's gonna be great for them and
my wife, Like I said, it's.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Gonna be special.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah. They seemed right at home.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, remembers everything.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
You know, we got our restaurants that we go to,
so uh yeah, it's all good.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Yeah. Driving through the city again, where are some of
the spots you have to head?
Speaker 4 (02:50):
Oh, Shias was the first place you know we went
out to eat. Gotta go to Shy We love that
that spot so uh and then will the Jean for
our cookies was uh the two spots we hit right away.
And just driving through you know, Saint Charleston's just seeing
the park and whatnot.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Just in Tulane.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
And it's going by our old houses, like wow, you know,
to be so long ago, but it feels like it
was yesterday.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
What stands out to you about playing in the Dome.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Oh the fans just there's there's no fans around the
league like the Saints fans.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
I mean they live and die by no doubt about it.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
You walk in there, you hear the music going, you know,
the touchdown chain, you know the song's coming on so Uh,
the stadium's always rocking, you know, noon game, night game,
it doesn't matter. They showing up. And uh, that's what
I definitely remember and I look forward to the most.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
How good is it gonna be the run out of
that tunnel again on the home side.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, that's that's Uh. I I've thought about that.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
You know, it really ain't hit me yet, but I
think it will when that happens, you know, you know,
just coming out of a tunnel.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Uh, you know, was a kid last time. So it's
gonna be special. But I also don't know how it's
gonna hit me, but I know it's gonna be in
a positive way for sure.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
How are you different than you were as a kid
back then?
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Oh, in all aspects.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Better in every aspect, not just my game, but just
how I take care of my body. Uh, what I
put in my body, my process, the amount of football
that I've seen at you know, at this level, the
amount of success and failures that I've had, you know,
and learned from. I'm looking forward to just bringing all
that back here and leading making plays and you know,
(04:29):
helping his team lead, I mean win, you know, and
get to where we wanna get.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
How have your goals changed at this point in your career.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
I wouldn't necessarily say change, just always I just tacking on,
you know what I mean, and continue to go. I
got a lot of left enter tank, a lot of juice,
a lot of gas, and uh, I just like I said,
I'm just excited to get back there on the field
and continue to just grow my career, go my legacy
and do it in and pact forward.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Back on the field and number ten.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Back and back out in that one. Oh yeah, it
was only right. It was only right, like I said,
full circle.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Uh, And so we had to go back to it
for sure, cause you haven't been wearing it.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
No I haven't.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
I haven't you know, every journey with you know, it's
been its own every stop. But I think coming back
here it was only right to do it for sure.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
So can bring out right, they can bring back the jersey.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
The ones that they had, Yeah, absolutely, Uh hopefully they
didn't burn 'em or no, but yeah, they can bring
it back out the closet.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
And knowing that they don't gotta buy another one.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Oh what would you wanna say to the fans? Uh?
Speaker 4 (05:31):
I mean I I I think I'm like I said,
I'm excited to be back.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
I really do, uh with all my heart. Uh. I
think they're the best fans in the NFL. I really
mean that.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
And I've been some great places, so I'm not knocking in.
But like I said, it's just that hospitality. You know,
they love you, and so I just look forward to
being back with y'all and giving them all all being
the best.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
I can possibly be for this team, this organization in
this city.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
I look forward to getting in into the community a
lot more at the time around for sure. You know,
being young, you know got out there, but you know
you're so focused on making your mark. But like I said,
I got a great process, So I'll definitely look forward
to get down in the community with the kids and
families and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
For sure.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Yeah, you got involved with your hometown community in Stockton,
did some stuff over the years with them, So it's
definitely something.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Oh yeah, yeah, no doubt, no doubt. And I think,
like I said, it'd be good for my kids to
be able to see.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
That and you know, get out there and be in
the community and my wife.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
Like I said, I think that's one of the things
I do look forward to doing a lot more than
I did when I was here when.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
I was young.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Well, you're still rocking the same nickname.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Always the Archer.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
The Archer ain't going nowhere and shooting arrows hopefully a
lot of them, for sure.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
So you can do that, Yeah, I can, Okay, because
for a while it.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
Was you know, I think it was that that second
and third year here, they're like no, no more. But
we got past that, you know, because it's for the
right reason. It's not like I'm trying to.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Promote violence at all.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Yeah, right, what does it represent?
Speaker 3 (07:01):
You know?
Speaker 4 (07:01):
My favorite Bible verse saw one forty four to six,
send forth, fightening scattered the enemy, shoot arrows and route them.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
So it's just another way for me to give God
the glory. Your Selsa had his little thing, but for me, it's.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Just giving God the glory to be able to give
me this platform and play and play at this level.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
For sure.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
You got to play with some of the best Saints
players that the franchise has had. Obviously quarterback Drew Brees
jar Evans, who's now on the coaching staff. There one
of your alignment. What is that relationship going to be?
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Like?
Speaker 4 (07:33):
Yeah, no, I think it's uh I mean, obviously he coach.
You obviously respect him, you know, and from the standpoint
he played at the highest level for so long, probably
won't be dealing to, you know, with each other too much.
You know, I'm not going out there and getting in
the trenches and nothing like that.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
But I do look forward to see him in that role.
He's you know, an awesome dude obviously, or he wouldn't
be here.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
And I think Cam is left is the only one
Cam Jordan is the only one left that I played with,
future Hall of Famer and one of the top Saints
they ever play.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
So I look forward to getting back with his goofy
self for sure.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
Yes he is still goofy.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Yeah, no doubt. It ain't going nowhere, ain't.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Well, there is somebody on the line and Talaga who
played at Oregon State. Yeah, so fellow beaver Yep, what
have you seen from him?
Speaker 4 (08:18):
Oh, he's that he's a dog, you know, I mean quiet,
but uh, he gets the job done. You know, he
comes in, he's about business and uh about shutting it down.
And so I look forward to actually, you know, getting
to know him a little bit out office. It was
a lot uh you know, past my time when he
was at Oregon State. But to have another fellow Beaver,
uh'd be great.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yeah, you gotta get you get Mickey some stuff exactly
you gott I.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Told him all the other day, I was throwing at
Uo just for whatever our reason. I told him, I took,
you know, some orange paint, you know, put it on
the field. So, uh, we definitely gonna have that that
competition going.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah, is it good to be back here and you know,
kind of delve into some of those relationships you had
when you first started. Obviously Cam the only player is
still left, but there's a lot of the same people
working here. Yeah, that you're gonna be able to kind
of pick up where you left off.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
Yeah, that's what it feels like, you know.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
And obviously all of us have so much growth, you know,
from there and sharpening our blade and so to be
able to get back together, you know and continue to
just build off that, it's gonna be great. There's some
some heads that I was with the other teams that
are you know, in a great position, like Ted Rath,
our strained coach who I think the world of so
(09:34):
be able to you know, be great to get back
in this program and get things going. So you're right,
it's just another growth moment for sure.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Yeah. So as far as the players go, got some
new faces in here, but coaching staff, Yeah, it's looking
very different for a lot of us.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
What are you excited about when you think of Kellen
Moore and that offense?
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Yeah, I think I think right away, just like the energy,
he's gonna be able to bring that youth obviously, just
you know, won a Super Bowl, so to be able
to be a part of that.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
There's no doubt he's gonna come in here with a
lot of great things. You know, I missed him and
so I've never played for him, But at the.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
End of the day, we all know the offensive mind
that he's about and what he's about, explosive plays, you know, tough,
fast and physical enjoy and so I look forward to
actually indulge myself in his in his system.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Heard a lot of great things from a lot of guys.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
So yeah, is it gonna be weird coming in as
the VET now with the receivers.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
Yeah, I mean, you can call me a VET, but
I don't feel like the VET. I still, you know,
a lot of youth left in these yeah, yeah, yeah,
you know. Unfortunately, that's the that's what the locker room
do to you, right, they give stuff for that. But no,
I think it's gonna be great. Our room got a
lot of special talent, you know, CEO and she and said,
(10:57):
and uh, you know, I just want to lead, like
I said, I want to be a part of making
plays back at the same time, you know, some of
those questions that they may have when I was young.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Hopefully I can.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Pour some knowledge and wisdom and in them to continue
to hance their process and their game.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
You just have to pull up that ninety eight yard touchdown.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Oh yeah, hopefully we can go ninety nine this time.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
You got to top it. You were with the Cowboys
last so you remember the game against the Saints last year.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
No, I don't, absolutely don't know. I don't remember that one. Yeah,
I flushed those type of games out of my head.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
But yeah, yeah, we got a lot still here, you know.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
Oh if you're talking from that standpoint, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
we got we got the We got a squad for sure, talented,
with a lot of.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Great new coaches come in. So I do remember that. Yeah,
the game is out of my head, all right.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
So now off the field. What are you bringing.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
From one standpoint like hobbies?
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Yeah, you know, what do you like to do?
Speaker 3 (12:05):
If fly? Uh?
Speaker 4 (12:06):
If fly planes? Shout out to Jimmy Graham ex yuh
ex saint. But did he get you into that first
time ever being in a piston plane was Jimmy over
the dome. It took me a minute to get you know,
get to it, you know, cause like I said, I
wanted to kind of uh establish my foundation and what's
most important. But uh, I definitely gotta give him credit
(12:28):
for inspiring me for sure.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Yeah, I saw a video of you taken some of
your teammates, Yeah, with the Cowboys before a game.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
Uh yeah, uh, you know, before a preseason game, not
a regular season game.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Let's make sure I ain't flying guys around, you know
before a game. Yeah, uh preseason I should say, uh,
but you mus.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Say, pretty good. They trusted you enough to get in
the car.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
I'm still here, Yeah, you know, I'm still here.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
So so what else do you like to do?
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Uh? Travel? But honestly, my wife and my kids is like,
we got three boys.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
Uh so if I'm not working out and training, it's
it's really all about them and just being with family
at this point. Other than that, if I'm not flying,
i'm with them and typically we together doing that too.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
But just raising my boys and uh, staying out the way.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
How old is the oldest one?
Speaker 3 (13:20):
He's four?
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Yeah, he looks pretty big for four.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
Hopefully you got a little more height than that. But
so far he's on that trajectory. So let's uh, let's
keep it going. Yeah, and then dashes too and then
jet it's three weeks.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Yeah, I know your wife just said that you guys
had a bunch of photos taken with the new baby,
and so.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yeah, yeah, that's what they do.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Yeah. Well, it's gonna be really fun to have you
back here, and I know a lot of people are excited,
you know, seeing your name again, and we'll be ready
to watch you soon enough coming out on the fields
and the don't yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
No, I look for as for it.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
It's gonna be awesome. And uh, let's get a Saints fans.
That's all I can say.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
All right, Well, here is to this next season.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Thank you so much, Thank you, it was nice to meet.
