Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hello, and welcome to Packers Pov, a podcast that aims
to shine a light on the human behind the helmet.
I'm your host, Taylor Rodgers, and we are here inside
historic Lambeau Field. Today's guest earned first team All SEC
honors at Alabama before the Giants made him the first
safety selected in the twenty twenty draft. He went on
(00:25):
to lead New York and picks twice and become a
two time team captain. Introducing Newpackers safety Xavier McKinney, how's.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
It going, x Doing well? Why are you doing today?
Doing really well?
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Really excited to sit down and talk with you, man, sir.
I'm excited to be here, be able to share my
story a little bit.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Yeah, So to that point, when you first arrived here
in Green Bay, you were asked what you bring on
the field, and the first word out of your mouth
was heart. Do you remember the moment you first fell
in love with football?
Speaker 2 (00:56):
For sure?
Speaker 3 (00:57):
When I was a kid growing up, obviously, I've always
played football, always dreamed of being in an NFL, and
so it started for me at a very early age.
Anytime I stepped on the field, I wanted to make
sure that you know everybody could see how much I
love the game, and I always just felt right, it felt
natural for me. And you know, obviously I always played
(01:17):
with with such passion. I played with my heart on
my sleeve, and I try to go as hard as
I can every time that I'm out there because I
never know when it's my last. So that's just how
I've been since i've been you know, Little.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
There's a new Packers coach here in the building, coach
Derek Annsley, who said he recruited you for two years
to Alabama. What's it like to be together with him
here again.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
It's great to be back with da.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
You know, I remember when I was in high school,
him and Coach Saban coming to my house, coming to
my school and me and with me talking with me,
so we had We've always had a great relationship. He
has a great relationship with my parents, really with my
immediate family, and it's always been great between us.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
We've always had a really close relationship.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
We've talked throout the year, even you know, when I
was at the Giants, so we just always just stayed
in contact with each other. So just being back here
with him is a great feeling. Uh, because obviously we
have some chemistry together. I think he's got a great
way with people, and I think that's where, you know,
originally we clicked.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
I noticed that he was a real human being.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
When you're in the business, you don't you don't run
past a lot of people that's gonna keep it one
thousand percent honest with you.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
And he was the one.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
That that always has and always did, so I respected
him for that. And you know, we've always you know, grown,
our relationship has always gotten, you know, better, and it's
not just.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
A player coast thing. We're more so family outside of
the building.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
And I think that was, you know, obviously a big
reason for me even you know, coming here in the
first place, where he was a part of that reason.
So it's been great being here, just being with him.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
That's really special, that relationship outside of football, right and
the fact that he kind.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Of double recruited you is cool now for sure. For sure,
I think that's the full circle moment. Because even in
college I only had him for one year and then
he left I had a new dB coach, But like
I said, we stayed in contact throughout all the years,
and you know, here we go back again at it.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
So you mentioned coach Saban. You're head coach at Alabama
and you've said that he helped you in ways you
can't even explain. What's one thing he taught you that
you've already applied as a.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Packer, not even just as a packer or as a
football player, but as a person, just disciplined. I saw
him come into work every day with the same mindset,
nothing changed. He had the same routine every day, and
a lot of people, just normally in this world, get
bored with doing the same things over and over again.
(03:46):
But what you don't realize is the more you do
it the same way, the better you keep getting at
those things, and the better you get at other things
as well. So just seeing the discipline that you know
he had as a person and as a coach really
always up with me. Seeing what he wanted to do
as far as he always wanted to be great, no
matter what he did, no matter if it was coaching
(04:08):
or you know, being a husband to his wife and
just everybody. So just seeing that really inspire me a lot,
and it definitely impacted my life. I don't even think
I ever really got to tell him how much he
really impacted me as a player and as a person.
But he did it in a way that I can't,
(04:28):
you know, all the time explain. But those are one
of the things that he's taught me just in general
in life.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
So keeping that repetition but making it interesting exactly. And
another person that helped get you here, someone you mentioned
played a big factor in your decision to sign here
in Green Bay is Jordan Love. What's something you've learned
about Jordan's since arriving here.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
He's very composed, he doesn't get flustered, he's consistent, and ultimately,
you know, I think he's a great quarter I know
what he's capable of. I know what he's done. And
the crazy thing is he hasn't even touched the ceiling yet.
You know, it's it's so much more that he has.
And you can tell when you go out there and
practice with him and play with him. His leadership is amazing.
(05:14):
You know, he leaves us like no other and he
goes out there and makes play. So all in all,
it's been good just being with him. Man, He's a
great dude to be around. You know, we've had conversations
just you know, talking just you know, everything's been good.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Man.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
So it's gonna be fun to you know, thrive with
him in these years going on and moving forward and
you know, just going out there and you know, playing
alongside with him for sure.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
What's the energy of this team right now?
Speaker 2 (05:41):
It's high. It's high.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
This was something that you know, I had to kind
of be vocal with to them, was realizing, Okay, like
we have a young team, but we have a lot
of talent, and we can really do special things if
we really lock in on what we need to do.
Because I think a lot of times, even if you
look historically, whatever sport that might be it, whether it's basketball,
(06:06):
you know, it could be football, we've always seen where
a team might have everything, but they don't get the
job done. You know what I'm saying, because you take
things for granted. So you know, my biggest thing to
the guys in the locker room was not taking anything
for granted because we only get one shot at it.
Regardless of you know, what the next few years might
look like, nothing ever stays the same. So just being
(06:26):
vocal about that. But I think everybody understands that, and
I think that's the good thing when you know everybody
knows what the main focus is and what the obviously
our main objective is.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
There seems to be some immediacy from each of you.
I've since that from coaches and players alike. For you personally,
you've stated that your goal is to be a Hall
of Famer. Can you tell me about that?
Speaker 3 (06:49):
You know, ever since I've started playing, like I said,
I always want to be the one of the greatest
to ever do it. And that mindset and that focus
does not change, it doesn't shift.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
It's still the same.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
It's always going to be the same until you know
I can get to that point. But for me, it's
you know, taking each day at a time and being
present in the present moment, worrying about, you know, what
I can do right now to be better as an
individual and make my team better at the same time.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
So I think it all goes hand in hand.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
And obviously the more you win championships, the easier that goal,
you know, becomes of being what I want to get to.
So just understanding all of that is where you know,
my mind sits and I'm just trying to be great man,
be like I said, one of the best to ever
do it.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
But I know it's going to take a lot of work.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
It's going to take a lot of time, but you know,
I'm willing to do it, and you know, whatever I
need to do to do that, I'll do that.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
So being great at discipline, to your point earlier, really
is what comes into play.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Exactly exactly, because if you look at all the you know,
the all time great guys, I'm sure they had discipline.
Discipline was probably on ten thousand, you know what I'm saying.
They made sure whatever they needed to do after practice
or before practice to get their body right, or you know,
work on this technique or this technique. Like, it's always
the little things that count the most. So I believe
(08:11):
in if you do the little things eventually that all
that stuff will pay off. And sometimes it's not stuff
that everybody else sees, but it's the things that you do,
you know, behind the scenes that have come to light
when the big stage, you know, gets there. Now, switching
gears outside of football, you said that you want to
get into.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
The fashion industry. That's something entirely different. When did you
realize that that was something that you were first interested in.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
I'll probably say high school.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
So I originally started drawing, like I drew my first
however many tattoos that I had, and then the drawing
kind of turned over it into you know, fashion. So
at first it was art, which is still art because
I love art. My freshman year in college, I actually
tried to major in art, but I couldn't stand there
too long because the classes were really long and practices
(09:00):
were really long, so it kind of didn't really mesh
together very well. But I knew from then on, like,
you know, I always like dressing. I always like looking nice,
and you know, being myself, being able to express, you know,
who I was as a person, and I feel like
I can do that the most through you know, my
fashion and what I wear. So just been trying to
tap into you know, that environment. Obviously, I've I've done
(09:24):
some pretty cool things. Going out the country, going to
different shows and being around different people has been you know,
the most exciting and interesting thing because obviously the people
are a lot different than you know, the people that
are in this world and the football were in the
sports world. They talk about different things, they care about
different things. So just being able to you know, see
(09:48):
different people and also accept you know, different people and
accept you know, how they think and how they move
different things, and like I said, just seeing you know,
how I can incorporate some of what they do into
you know, what I do, but still keeping it me.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
So I think that's that's super important.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
You've talked about global fashion and this inclusivity earlier this year.
You got a chance to go to Milan for fashion Week.
Are there some takeaways that you came back with?
Speaker 3 (10:17):
For sure, just being in a whole different group of people.
I stayed like right in the dead center of the city,
so just kind of seeing how everybody did every It
was a lot different than being in the States.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Obviously, just the way of life.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
You know, how people greet other people, how you talk
to other people. Like, there's so much little things that
you don't really notice, especially if you've never really been
out the country, and especially if if you've never been
to an event like fashion week, because fashion week is
crazy because it's so many different personalities and so many
different people that clash all in one at one time.
(10:55):
It's a lot to take in. But once you you know,
just kind of settle into it and be like, okay,
I'm here, Like you get a better feel for and
you know, you start to learn a lot. So it's
been incredibly fun just being in the fashion world. I
met so many great people, you know, I've met so
many smart people, so many people that have given me
advice about different things. So it's ultimately it's been great, man,
(11:18):
I've loved every second of it.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Now, speaking of off the field, obviously fashion is a
premier interest for you. Do you have any other off
the field goals?
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Yeah, outside of fashion.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
One of them is to have investment properties, which I
have already so kind of just building my portfolio in
real estate. And then another is to you know, help
out wherever I can and poverse communities. I'm big on that.
Just I'm big on just trying to educate the youth
as much as I can, especially black kids growing up.
(11:54):
Just trying to help as much as I can wherever
I can and be an instrument that you know, you know,
they can come to me and ask me about anything
or just wherever I could give advice, and you know,
putting money back into those communities, you know, seeing them
flourish and you know, grow and get better, seeing the
school systems get better. That's something big for me that
I've been working on for a couple of years. So
(12:15):
still trying to figure out an exact spot for it
and kind of go from there.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
But those are a couple of goals that I got.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
But to that point, you participated in a fashion event
that gave back to the Boys and Girls Club.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
Yeah. Yeah, for sure, I've done a couple of things
in Jersey to just help with the kids. Just even
showing face is good because they don't get to see
that a lot. So as many times as I can
go and show face and talk. And I know one
time and think we were in Queens, we did like
a turkey drive, so we passed out turkeys. And I've
(12:49):
done some on my own to that was like a
team one, and then I've done some on my own
as well of just helping out the community, being helping him,
being an instrument because obviously everybody is not able to,
you know, help, So whenever I can, obviously I have
the platform to do it, I had a voice to
do it, and I have the funds to do it.
So as much as I can, I try to do that.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
That's a beautiful thing that's bigger than any sport for sure.
Now I want to close on the subject of football
in your own words, what is the mission statement for
this Packers team.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
The mission statement for this Packers team is to win.
That's what we've preached and that's what I love so
much because I've won the majority of my career just
playing football, and I'm such a competitive guy, like I
love winning, I hate losing, and this whole organization is
(13:41):
built off of winning. Obviously, the trophies are everywhere. You
can see him everywhere, so it's always on your mind,
you always thinking about it. So I think our mission
statement is to win, and that's what it is.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Like.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
I don't think we shoy away from it. I don't
think that we should because even if we are short,
then we're short. But at least we know what we're
trying to get done and accomplish, so that change will
go about that every day, you know, making sure that
we put the work in, put the time in, and
like I said, I know that you know, at the
end of the day, everything that we want we'll get.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
Now that's on the team side, and a phenomenal goal
on a personal level, what would you like your legacy
to be here in Green Bay?
Speaker 3 (14:18):
One of the greatest safeties to ever play in the
Green and Yellow, And that's what you know, I wanted
to be I want to submit my legacy here. I
always wanted to play for one team throughout my whole career.
Obviously that didn't happen, but this is where I want
to finish my career. I want to play here until
I'm done, and I want to be able to put
(14:39):
up numbers that are unbelievable, numbers that you know, people.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
That haven't seen. So that's my goal.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
And you know, obviously I know what I'm working tours
and I know what I want to get to. I
know it's gonna take time. I know it's gonna take work,
but I'm willing to do that. And I'm also willing to,
you know, listen to you know, whoever along the way,
whether it's coaches, play whatever it is, who can give
me advice on how, you know, I can get to
that step and you know how I can keep you know,
(15:07):
elevating my game even more. X.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
It's been an absolute pleasure sitting down with you. Thank
you so much for taking the time here today.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Yes, sir, I appreciate you so much.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
And thank you for listening to packers POV to learn
more about what X is doing off the field. Visit
McKinney one five Underscore, take care and see you next time.
