Speaker 1 (00:06):
Hi, everybody. Welcome to another edition of Packers Unscripted from
Packers dot Com. I am Mike Spoffer, joined as always
by my trusted colleague West Hodquitz. We're coming to you
here from our studios at Lambeau Field to preview my
friend weston Monday Night football. It will be here at
Lambeau Packers against the Eagles. The Eagles coming in at

(00:27):
six and two. They are the defending Super Bowl champs.
They are the team that beat the Packers twice last year,
Week one in Brazil and then in the Wildcard round
at the Link on their way to that Super Bowl title.
A little bit of a hiccup actually, in a span
of five days a Sunday Thursday, they dropped a couple
of games, but other than that, they have looked every

(00:49):
bit the contender to potentially repeat as Super Bowl champions
that everybody thought they would be coming off of that title.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, and Mike, when you look at the Philadelphia Eagles,
and you and I have talked about before, actually even
right before the show, you Howie Roseman, Nick Sirianni, what
they've built in Philadelphia. It has really become the standard,
the foundation for way NFL franchises want to build their
teams now, right, because they've been really successful throughout the draft.
They've added some really good football players. But at the

(01:17):
same time, they've gone out and they've found some really
good football players too. I mean, when you look at
the Saquon Barkley deal last year, that is going to
go down as one of the most consequential free agent
signings in NFL history. You consider not only winning the
Super Bowl, but the fact you took away one of
your division rivals best players, if not the best player.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
So it's been a weird year for them. They got
out of the gate. They beat Kansas City, they beat
the Rams, they beat Tampa Bay, I mean, all front runners.
Also two of the top teams in the NFC. Now
we'll go up against another one here against the Packers.
They had a setback against Denver, they had that blimp
on the radar against the Giants, but because of the
way they structure this thing, seventeen days later, they were

(01:57):
able to avenge.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
That loss to the Giants.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
They got the buy they win and riding high and yeah,
this is a rested and confident Philadelphia Eagles team that's
coming into Green Bay. The one benefit though, as you
outlined all that stuff, the Packers finally get them at Lambeau.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Yeah, the Packers are gonna get them here at home.
You mentioned the teams that they've beaten, the Rams and
the Buccaneers. They're two of the teams that are six
and two in the NFC. So those two teams have
a combined four losses and two of them are to
the Philadelphia Eagles, So that's definitely something to keep in mind.
And honestly, the scheduling thing has been kind of weird.

(02:31):
They blew the seventeen point lead in the fourth quarter
to Denver at home, really tough loss, and they had
to come back on the short week and play on
Thursday night on the road against a division rival with
the Giants, and they simply didn't really recover from that
really bad fourth quarter against the Broncos. So they end

(02:52):
up losing two in a row. But now they've come back.
They went on the road and beat the Minnesota Vikings,
and as you said, they avenged the loss to the
Giants by beating them handily when they got them back
in Philadelphia. Offensively, this team is about the weapons that
it has all over the place, right Wes. I mean,
you've got Jalen Hurts running the show. Saquon Barkley. He's

(03:14):
not on pace for a two thousand yard season again,
he's actually on pace for only about eleven or twelve
hundred yard season. But DeVante Smith AJ Brown, I mean,
Dallas Goddard, the tight end, has seven touchdown catches in
eight games, so he's a big time red zone weapon.
And when I look at this offense, not only the
personnel and how difficult they can be to match up with,

(03:37):
but this is an offense that has turned the ball
over only three times in eight games. I mean, that's
incredibly efficient and it's a big reason the Eagles have
posted six wins so far.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
The Eagles are a great illustration of situational football and
why it's so important in many categories. They're rather pedestrian.
You can look at all their yardage totals, very pedestrian,
mostly middle of the pack in some ways, in some
ways the bottom quarter of the league. But you look
at the situational phase of this game, they're exceptional. And

(04:14):
the thing I'm most impressed with is the fact that
Jalen Hurts, despite being sacked twenty five times, has thrown
one interception when you look at Owaner to just bring
up quickly. Their red zone. Yeah, red zone, they're first
in the league right now eighty five percent. They are
tied for first in goal to go. They're one of
a few teams there that have scored every single time
with a touchdown when they've been in a goal to
go situation. And also because of the toush push, fifth

(04:38):
in fourth down conversions despite not being that great on
third downs. So it shows you how they want to
play the game.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Now.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
The one thing that has been kind of odd is
that Saquon Barkley's off to a slower start this year.
AJ Brown has been off to a very slow start,
to the point that some people are even wondering, hey,
would they potentially trade them?

Speaker 3 (04:57):
You know what's happening there.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah, I didn't quite unders stand that, but anyway.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
I do either. But but when you look historically at
his production, I mean he's at like three hundred yards
and change a couple of touchdowns, just not AJ Brown
type production. So but all that being said, their complimentary football,
the way they finish drives, it's second to none. And
with Jalen Hurts as much as it seems like every
time he has an off day, everybody just wants to

(05:23):
completely Lambass the kid. He is been everything and more
that you want in a franchise quarterback, and better yet,
the Eagles have built their roster around him to suit
his talents. The last thing I'll say before I ship
it back over to you the fact that Lane Johnson's
still doing it at a high level in twenty twenty five,

(05:44):
twelve years after he was drafted that draft class with
David Baktiari, I think says a lot about him as well.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah, no doubt about it. The thing, the one thing
that is kind of the head scratcher is what you
mentioned that Jalen Hurts has been sacked twenty five ten times,
and just for comparison purpose, folks, Jordan Love has been
sacked eleven times this year, less than half of the
amount of times that Jalen Hurts has been sacked. So
that's definitely something to keep an eye on on the
defensive side of the ball. The Eagles always just strike

(06:13):
me defensively as a team that isn't fancy and isn't flashy,
but they're solid. The one thing that they are trying
to get more of as this season goes along is
pressure off the edge because their defensive tackles hold down
the middle and get pressure on the interior at a
pretty good rate, but their edge pressure has been lacking.

(06:36):
They trade for Jalen Phillips from Miami to try to
add to that. We'll see if he ends up playing
on Monday night. They also, of course traded for Jiu
Alexander from Baltimore. We'll see if Alexander is going to
take the field against his former team. But as I said,
they're just they're they're not flashy, they're not they don't

(06:57):
have a whole bunch of defensive statistics that jump out you.
But it's you know, it's pretty rare that they go
out there and you know, surrender a point total in
you know, the upper twenties. I mean, even when they
lost to the Denver Broncos, they actually had the Broncos
shut out through three quarters before they blew the game
in the fourth quarter. So I'm really curious to see

(07:20):
if Jalen Phillips can make an impact as far as
as far as generating the edge pressure. They only have
sixteen sacks as a team through eight games. That's not
what you would expect from from a Super Bowl championship team,
and that's an area that they're trying to crank up
here as the second half of the season rolls on.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Yeah, but it is odd though, right because again, much
like the offense defensively, very good situationally third right now
in red zone defense, you know, respectable ninth and go
to go and then obviously seventh on fourth downs. They
mimic themselves very well. The one thing I've always appreciated
about Philadelphia though, especially in this era underneath Eric Siriani

(07:59):
or excuse me, Nick Siriani, is the fact that they
have as good of an interior defense, I think as
there is in the National Football League, and when you
think back to when Tampa Bay got the better at
Green Bay and in the way some of these other
defenses have been built over the years, having strong middle
linebackers and good defensive tackles. As much as we make

(08:19):
out of the edge rushers and cornerbacks and those star positions,
a lot of times it's the nitty gritty stuff in
the middle that makes a difference. Jalen Carter is an
exceptional talent, and it was you know, some of the
off the field questions that were one of the reasons
why he fell a couple of years ago. But we
saw last year in the playoff games. I mean, even
going back to Brazil, I mean, just how talented this

(08:40):
guy is and what kind of penetrator he is. And
kudos to Vic Fangio. I mean they unlocked the potential
within Zach Bond.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
Yeah, and that was that was the guy I was
gonna mention we talked about him heading into the wild
Card game last year. How you know, a guy who
had basically been a special teams player in New Orleans
and whatnot, former Wisconsin Badger, a big star in Madison,
he suddenly became as last season went along. He became
the centerpiece of the second level of that defense. And

(09:11):
then they paid him accordingly.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
Yeah, So for him to get that extension then and
now being paid like one of the top linebackers in
this game, I think obviously, and you just look at
his impact this year. Sixty four tackles, three sacks, which
is tied for second with Jordan Davis on the defense,
along with five pass deflections, four quarterback hits. I mean,
he's forced to fumble, he has an interception, the kids everywhere.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
But the other thing too that I love about when
I talk about the interior of the defense. Also Cooper
Dejeene being the draft pick two years ago in that
that draft class man. The more we go back and
look at it's the Packers had so many options there too.
But really you couldn't have gone wrong when you look
at the type of talent that came out of that
early second round, early to mid second round. Dejeene was

(09:53):
one of those guys that fell. He's a quarterback hit guy,
you know, he's a pass deflection guy. I don't think
he has a pick yet this year, but and also
somebody they offers him something on special teams too. So
Roseman and the way he's built out this team is
it's really respectable. But at the same time, I think
when you do look at some of the areas of
where they've struggled this year, there are opportunities there for
Green Bay too. So making sure that the Eagles don't

(10:16):
get the edge rush going, making sure that they do
protect the football are going to be really paramount this one.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Well, they were a Super Bowl champion that on the
defensive side anyway, they couldn't pay everybody they decided to
pay Zach Bond, they let Josh Sweat go, they let
Milton Williams go. But they've still, as you said, that
that interior of their defensive line has not has not
really faltered even with some of the personnel losses there.

(10:43):
Let's get right into it here, Wes keys to victory
for green Bay. A lot of things come to mind
in terms of what the Packers have to do here. Obviously,
it would be tremendous if the defense could generate a
turnover to against a team that has not turned the
ball over. But aside from something like an anomaly like
that happening, what rises to the top of your list.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
The Packers absolutely, unequivocally have to finish drives in this game,
and they're gonna have to do it against one of
the best red zone defenses in the National Football League.
Here's what's really tough for green Bay. This is the obstacle,
the hurdle that they face against the Eagles. A lot
of the areas that they fell short against the Panthers
are areas that the Eagles are very strong in, and

(11:27):
trying to find answers for that quickly and doing it
against a team the caliber of the Eagles is going
to be It's gonna be supreme challenge. Now that being said,
as I talked about on Tuesday show, there's a resiliency
that this Packers team has shown this season that you
hope will again show itself and whether it be getting
the run game established early, whether it's you know, finding

(11:50):
some solutions inside the red area, especially now that Tucker
Craft isn't there, that's going to be I think ultimately
what dictates who wins and who loses in this game.
The pack very easily because of the way that Philadelphia
protects the ball. They could go without a takeaway in
this game. If you get one, I think it would
be a huge, huge thing that the Packers have to

(12:10):
capitalize on. But you have to be prepared going into
this understanding you are playing a discipline football team that's
not going to give you a lot of chances. So
what does that mean? That means you also can't turn
the ball over. The Eagles are still only I think
like plus four in turnover margin this year, even though
they haven't had a lot of giveaways, they haven't had
that many takeaways either. Okay, so the Packers have to
win in that regard situationally, every single check mark and

(12:32):
box that there is to be had is how you
win this game.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
The Packers have to check those off.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
Yeah, and I'm with you totally on this one being
a game that's going to come down to the red zone.
When you're going up against a team that is first
in the league in red zone offense and is in
the top five in the league in red zone defense,
you have to find a way to crack that code
at some point in the game, multiple times. In fact,
on both sides of the ball. You've got to be

(12:58):
able to You've got to be able to finish the
drives on offense and not do what the Eagles have
made a lot of teams do, which is kick field goals.
And you have to find a way to stop Jalen
Hurts and company when they get in the red zone.
Maybe maybe one time in the game, if you can
stop them, make them kick a field goal and take
those four points off the board, that could go a

(13:19):
long way for it. The other thing I will say,
when we were talking about Jalen Hurts and the twenty
five sacks, you obviously there's there will be an opportunity
here to pressure Jalen Hurts and to add to that
sack total, because that is that's been the one weakness
of this Philadelphia offense. But you have to earn the

(13:41):
right to pressure Jalen Hurts, and you earn that right
by slowing down Saquon Barkley. And the way the Packers
run defense has shown some leaks in the last couple
of weeks, the first half against Pittsburgh, before the Steelers,
you know, got away from the run in the second half,
and then the way Rico Dowdle just gave the Packers
so much trouble all week, all game long against Carolina,

(14:03):
the Packers are going to have to earn their right
to get after Jalen Hurts with the pass rush and
add to those twenty five sacks. And that's going to
start with not letting Barkley be the guy who's dictating
the tempo and controlling the pace of this game.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
And for the last three years, Mike, that the Packers
have seen Saquon Barkley, I remember talking with Kenny Clark
about this numerous times. They have done, by and large,
a very good job against him. But it just seems
like whether he was with the Giants or last year
with the Eagles, there was that one or two carries
that were sort of the backbreaker. Yeah, that he ended
up getting an explosive play at the wrong time and

(14:39):
it really ended up leading to the victory for his team.
So the Packers have to be cognizant of that. And
then the other reason why, in addition to the fact
that you just need to stop Barkley, you have to
you have to keep the Philadelphia Eagles in third and long.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
You can't have them playing with third and.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
Shorts because, Yeah, we talked so much about the toush push,
but they're really good at devising in scheming off of
those tush push looks now, Right, it's not just about
that play, it's what they can generate off that play.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Yeah, they get into third and four or less, they're
looking at, hey, if we get to fourth and one,
we got all kinds of stuff at our disposal, right,
Like that's that's sort of their approach in a lot
of ways, kind of like the Detroit Lions look at
fourth down, except the Eagles have this tush push thing
then and then everything that they do off of it
to try to keep you honest, You're right, I mean

(15:28):
you can't let them live in third and four or less,
or it's gonna be your defense is just not gonna
be able to at least consistently enough get off the field.
But if you can keep them in third and seven
and third and eight, that's what I talk about. You've
earned the right to generate some pass rush against Jalen
Hurts and then see if that gives you the opportunity
to get off the field.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
Without a shadow of a doubt. Michael, And that's where
the test lies. Now again, I know what fans are
gonna think, and coming off of the Panthers game, they're
gonna be like, Okay, well, Howard, if we'd lost this
way to the Panthers, how are we going to handle
the Eagles? As I wrote an insider Inbox, there is
no transitive property in the National Football League, right. Just
because something went one way one week, it doesn't mean
necessarily mean it's going to go that way the next time.

(16:10):
But that being said, the stakes are really high because
this is the Packers, this is their home game number five.
Now there's only three more after this. Yeah, with eight
more games to play, you have to take advantage of it.
Oh and by the way Greenmy Packers have still yet
to lose under Mattlafleur on Monday Night football. Another thing
that they have to take care of business.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
Monday night football at home at home.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
Yeah, thank you? All right, well said.

It's an interesting slate of games in Week ten around
the league. Fortunately for us, because the Packers play on
Monday night, we actually might get to watch some of

(17:41):
these games on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
No Saw, Apollo, Gram Prix Broth.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Oh, okay, we got Formula one on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
But yes, there will be some good games for everybody else.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
The three, the three that jump out to me, and
there are more, but the three that jump out to
me are Baltimore going to Minnesota, a huge game with
Minnesota now they're back at home. JJ McCarthy is back
from his injury. They posted the big victory over the
Detroit Lions on the road, So does Minnesota build on
that with Baltimore now coming in and Lamar Jackson is

(18:11):
back from his injury and all that. New England is
at Tampa Bay. A pair of teams. I believe they're
both six and two New England. New England is seven
and Oh New England hasn't had a buy yet, so
New England is seven and two, seven and two versus
six and two in a cross conference game AFC versus NFC.
A very interesting matchup there with Tampa bay By and

(18:31):
the home team, and then a big one in the
NFC West. The Rams are at the forty nine ers.
Rams are six and two, the Niners are six and three.
They haven't had their bye week yet that one, And
of course the Seattle Seahawks are sitting there at six
and two in that division as well, But Rams against
the Niners that one will will have a big impact

(18:54):
on that division race.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
And honestly, the Seahawks are hosting Arizona, which Jacobe Burrissette,
I mean.

Speaker 1 (18:59):
The season is another NFC West matchup there.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
The season's on the brink there for the Cardinals, especially
after they made this move to put Kyler Murray on
injured reserve. So yeah, forty nine Ers, Rams, I mean,
it has been that type of matchup. Man, They just
they go back and forth, back and forth. Obviously the
Rams have gotten the better of that. What can they
do here? Certainly, I think just from a random noon
game standpoint, New England and Tampa's very intriguing. I've have

(19:25):
two dark horse candidates for the MVP there so at
the quarterback position, so that'll be fascinating to watch. But
to me, I really do believe I kind of jumped
over there earlier. But Baltimore Minnesota is such a pivotal
game because I don't think necessarily either team's season is
over if they lose it, But whoever wins is gonna
be feeling really good about themselves because Baltimore is just

(19:46):
trying to dig itself out of this hole that it
got itself into at the beginning of the season, whereas
the Vikings for as much as went wrong mid season
right before Carson Wentz went down. If they win that game,
there're suddenly what three and oh three and one now
JJ McCarthy at quarterback, So they're feeling pretty good about themselves.
So unfortunately for them, Aaron Jones did get hurt again

(20:07):
shoulder anto injury did not have him practicing on Wednesday.
They do have Jordan Mason, the former running back for
the forty nine ers, who's been a really good complimentary
piece for them, but certainly getting Aaron back and getting
him banged up again not fantastic.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
Yeah, I'm curious to see in that particular matchup with
JJ McCarthy coming back getting some things going for Minnesota,
and yeah, we don't know what the status will be
with Aaron Jones, but justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, TJ. Hockinson,
we know all those weapons that Minnesota has. Is Baltimore
going to get some things figured out on defense because

(20:44):
that for you know, I mean, they beat the Chicago
Bears with Tyler Huntley their backup quarterback. This hasn't been
all of their struggles have not been all about Lamar
Jackson and his health by any means. This is an
interesting test to me for Baltimore's defense. And of course
it's a Baltimore team. The Packers are going to face
way down the road at Christmas time here and things

(21:05):
could could look a lot different then as well. But
because you know how, you know how this is west,
I mean, Lamar Jackson such a dynamic player. If the
Ravens start to get some things figured out on defense,
they become an extremely dangerous team in a division where
nobody's really putting it all together.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
Right.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
The Steelers are going, you know, the Steelers lose to
the Packers, then they beat the Colts, and the Cincinnati
Bengals can't stop anybody, and and the Cleveland Browns are
where they are. The Baltimore Ravens are looking in their
division like, hey, this is there for the taking. But
if you can't get it figured out on defense and
you can't go into Minnesota and get that win, you've

(21:47):
created a bigger hill for yourself to climb.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
And then let's be honest too, Mike. I mean, there's
eight teams right now in the AFC that have a
winning record. Kansas City is currently on the outside looking
in at five and four, but they're the only team
that isn't in the playoffs right now that has a
winning record in that conference. So a win here or
there goes a long way for the Ravens. In addition
to the fact that who wants to face the Baltimore
Ravens in the Wild Carter Divisional round If Lamar Jackson

(22:11):
sneaks into the playoffs, which number one, number two seed
wants to face up with that, regardless of how many yards,
regardless of how much production the Ravens defense is conceding.
So a lot to watch in that regard. But for
the Packers, as the situation aligns here, you have two
back to back opponents against the NFC East and then

(22:32):
we are diving head first directly into the divisional slate. Yep,
a lot of the NFC North games are coming right
down the pipeline, so seeing how the dust settles with
the Vikings with the Lions and then obviously with the
Chicago Bears. I mean, all things that are going to be,
you know, really paramount to determining what the Green Bit
Packers are going to be. And it's a tough situation

(22:54):
too for Green Bay with Chicago, with the Giants traveling
to Soldier Field, and then six days after this game
against the Eagles, Hackers will be going to Met Life
to face them. Yeah, the lining of the schedule has
been very fascinating to watch because a lot of these
divisional matchups it seems like the common oponents are the
ones that are coming right after they face each other.

Speaker 1 (23:13):
Yeah, it's been it's been kind of a it's been
an interesting deal this year, the way that has uh,
the way that has taken place. Okay, so other than
your f one viewing on Sunday, what are you gonna
have your eyes on?

Speaker 3 (23:27):
Definitely?

Speaker 2 (23:27):
I mean, like I think it would be easy for
me to say, obviously the Falcon or I should say,
the Vikings in the Ravens for all the reasons that
are aforementioned. But I will say, when you're looking at
the nighttime slot and the Sunday night football slot, Aaron Rodgers,
they got back on the horse against the Colts. Can
they get back on you know, build on that now
against a Chargers team that is now back on the horse.

Speaker 3 (23:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (23:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
It's a great to your original point, Formula one and
auto racing aside, it is a fantastic slate of Sunday games,
especially in a week in which the NFL doesn't have
the benefit of the Kansas City Chiefs playing, which seems
like that's just been the primetime matchup on Thursday Sunday
or Monday, yeah, or the game of the week.

Speaker 1 (24:07):
Or yeah, or they're at three twenty five on Sunday. Yeah.
But uh well, it should be fun. I'm looking forward
to watching some football on Sunday and then gearing up
for Monday night football at lambeau Field.

Speaker 2 (24:19):
You know, I was gonna say, what would have been
a really good answer if I would have said Browns
and Jets to go for the big matchup?

Speaker 1 (24:26):
Yeah, jeez. And we didn't even talk about all the
all the trading deadline stuff with the Jets. But that's
a whole I mean, holy cow, there they they sold
the farm, they did, you talk about a fire sale.
But yeah, they're all about They're all about the first
and second round of the draft. The next two years.
They're gonna be the uh, they're gonna be the team
to watch on Draft night coming up here.

Speaker 3 (24:47):
