Speaker 1 (00:00):
The following is an exclusive presentation of the Carolina Panthers
in the National Football League.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
And they're tall, and they're tall, and.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
They're doll This is Panther Talk on the Caroline Up
Panthers Network.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
I just didn't see enough execution. I look at this
group and we're talented, and we're young. And the challenge
that I gave to the group is are we going
to be a team that's almost good or are we
gonna make the plays when they come to us? And
that's what needs to show up. You know, across the board.
We need to have consistency. You know, penalties got us again.
You know, we got two of our biggest runs of

(00:37):
the night come back because of holding calls, a couple
of interceptions on third down, one for ten on third down.
It's just it's just not good enough. And it's not
for lack of trying. It's not for lack of getting
open and you know, the protection we had, you know,
maybe two issues, but you know, just in general, like
that's the challenge for the group is like we need
to be able to take this step together, you know,
and the leadership has to step up for guys to

(01:00):
to play morecan system.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
And now, along with Jim Zoki and Eugene Robinson, here's
a Niche Shroff with Panther Talk live from the Panthers
broadcast facility at Bank of America's.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Dig Those were pointed words from Dave Canalis after Saturday's
preseason lost to the Houston Texans, a game in which
the Panthers did not score a touchdown. Anise Shrofchimzochi, Eugene Robinson.
I walked away from that game feeling a couple of things. One,

(01:36):
when you watched what you saw on the field during
the game, there just wasn't a whole lot, especially offensively.
I was at the joint practice on Thursday where there
were a lot of flash moments for Bryce Young some
of his receivers they get made a nice catch. Bryce
and Tremaine continue to impress. There were a lot of moments.

(01:59):
But if you're a fan, you don't see that. You
don't see the joint practice. You see the game, and
there is a part of it here with the Panthers
where listen for us to sit here and say, hey,
it's just preseason and don't put too much stock in it.

(02:19):
While there may be a lot of truth to that,
you do have to earn, Eugene a little bit of
that benefit of the doubt. I don't think we've earned
that yet. Buffalo's earned it, Kansas City's earned it, Philadelphia's
earned it. You have a preseason game where you don't
do anything, Okay, it's just preseason. We're still in that
phase where we got to earn the ability to say.

Speaker 5 (02:41):
That, Yeah, we don't have the luxury to say that, Okay,
it's just preseason. Every rep matters. When you go one
for ten on third down situations and your office can't
get off the snide, that's a big issue. It really is,
because that means every team that you face deficively is saying, hey,
we can stop them, and we can do just about

(03:02):
anything that we can. I didn't, you know what what.
I was surprised, and I saw some of that first unit.
I saw on the first unit how they were able
with the Texans and I know they got a good defense,
but they were able to blow through that offensive line.
I mean there was pressure in the face and I
was like, wow, I didn't really expect it. I expected

(03:24):
a much more stouter effort and I didn't see that.
And we're talking about the first unit. So I agree
with you. You don't get the luxury of saying it's just
preseason with cool. We had a great Thursday, we did
our Yeah, you used to see this Thursday. It doesn't
work that way. It's what you put out there every
single time when it's live and the cameras are rolling,

(03:47):
they are rolling, they are rolling.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
And Jim, you know, you go back to Bryce Young
through two passes, stat sheets says, oh for two they
were two drops, two drops, right, And I think that's
what the frustrate that Dave Canalis expressed after the game
when he talked to you guys. You can kind of
feel that, Hey, you know, it's one thing that we
got our forty reps for offense in the joint practice,

(04:10):
and we had our moments and we looked good and
I felt really good about that. But you know, those
simple matters of execution matching up to effort, you do
want to see those under the bright lights as well.

Speaker 6 (04:24):
Yeah, and you know, maybe if JT catches his, you
got the first down for sure, maybe you get a
couple more first downs. You feel pretty good about the
two series and the work they got on top of
what you said Thursday, or if every time Trevor ETM
breaks up a big run we didn't have a holding penalty,
you might be talking about whow we have the explosive
third back, but those didn't count because of the penalties

(04:44):
that were involved with that. So it was a game
void of chunk plays offensively for them, and then defensively again,
I thought they played well. They inherited that short field
at the eight where Houston gets a touchdown, so I thought,
you know, overall the defense wasn't bad, but when Nico
Collins was out there with CJ, they made a pretty
easy touchdown pass play there on Bartholomew.

Speaker 7 (05:04):
So I think, you.

Speaker 6 (05:05):
Know, they do weigh it heavily, more heavily than any
practice what they do in these three preseason games for
the evaluation overall. So is it you know, we've changed
our thought. We don't feel the same about the team now,
but you do want to see it so that when
you're hitting the regular season opener at Jacksonville, that you're
hitting the ground at full steam and ready to play
at a competitive, winning level.

Speaker 5 (05:24):
You know, football is about two things. It really is
about execution, but it's also about momentum. And when you
have the first pass on a quick slint and it
doesn't go well and it hits the receivers right in
the hands and he doesn't come up with it, what's
on the sideline that's unset is Oh.

Speaker 7 (05:42):
That's that's what you do.

Speaker 5 (05:44):
You don't say it, but that's how you feel because
that is a momentum play. The breaks it's gonna got
one person to beat is the safety.

Speaker 7 (05:53):
And so when you're.

Speaker 5 (05:54):
Talking about not getting that play, it seems like it's benign,
but it's much more that. It's like that was an
opportunity to go ahead and advance, to change. That was
opportunity if you break a tackle to go all the way,
and that's about momentum, and it's then it becomes less
about execution but more about momentum.

Speaker 7 (06:13):
You gotta catch that rock. You gotta catch the rock.

Speaker 5 (06:16):
And so the two passes that bryce through that should
have been caught, I'm sitting there go like this, dude,
do you want to not be here?

Speaker 7 (06:23):
Do you? You?

Speaker 5 (06:25):
You can change the complexion of what they think about
you and being somebody that can rely on by making
those momentum plays. And when you don't make those momentum plays.
Then they go the coaches, uh is he is he
our guy or not?

Speaker 4 (06:39):
And you'll hear it. We talked to Dave Canalis earlier
today and when we sat down with him, it'll come
up in the next segment. You know, he mentions, Hey,
the stuff that you see in practice, behind the scenes,
the stuff that he sees that fans don't see. He's
encouraged with and that matters. And again, at the end
of the day, the Panthers going to Jacksonville Week one

(07:02):
and come out with a win, these three preseason games
become a deleted memory. They don't matter. We'll never talk
about them again. But if there is some sort of
carryover from what we've seen these first two preseason games
and it bleeds into Week one again, the critics then
will pounce on that, oh exact and the optics of this. Again,

(07:25):
we're in the preseason where, let's be honest, it's all
optics at this point.

Speaker 7 (07:30):
And that's why preseason I say it matters.

Speaker 5 (07:33):
It matters from one standpoint because you get to set
a base about what this team looks like in front
of the crowd.

Speaker 7 (07:39):
What are it gonna be, what is the character of seams.

Speaker 5 (07:41):
What's the defensive character, the office character, the overall character.
Are they gonna be tenacius? Are it gonna be relientless?
What does it look like? And then when you don't produce,
if it happens to go awry in the regular season,
they're gonna look back into preseason go like this, Oh
we saw the same stuff. Oh matter we saw to say,
hind the exact same thing. You know, why will somebody

(08:02):
getting on that guy? Then at that time, you know
it's so it matters when you lose. But coach Coach
Knoxis always say he said, when you lose, there's nothing
there for nobody. There's nothing there. There's nothing you can
say that it is good at all. As a matter
of fact, they pick up stuff that you did years
ago to say, look what this guy.

Speaker 7 (08:21):
Used to do. So and he's absolutely right.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
So the preseason will be a wash only if the
regular season is blazon But if the residents ain't blazing,
you're gonna look back at lack of execution that coach
was talking about and go, yeah, we saw that before.

Speaker 7 (08:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (08:35):
I mean, having good practices is important, but the point
of the practice is to carry that into the game.
If there's no wins and losses or stats from how
you did in practice, So if you don't carry it
into the game, that's great, but it doesn't it adds
up to nothing. There's no currency in that. So again,
I think it's all there. I think it's a talented roster.

(08:57):
It's a much better roster than year, especially on defense.
So it takes some time. Your hope is that it
hits early, right away in the regular season, so that
the record doesn't reflect that it's taking more time than
it should. But I still feel bullish on this team
as far as everything that's in play offensively and defensively.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
There's some questions.

Speaker 6 (09:16):
I think you could talk about depth in some positions,
especially in the defensive secondary and linebacker.

Speaker 7 (09:20):
Still some wondering.

Speaker 6 (09:21):
About kicker or certain things like that, But by and large,
I think they did a good job of addressing as
many things as you could in one off season here
to get things in the right direction, and.

Speaker 5 (09:29):
I'm encouraged to that. To to that same, No, it
could be doom and gloom, but I'm not. I'm encouraged
by it.

Speaker 4 (09:35):
Right What is the carryover of preseason momentum, That's a
valid question. Two thousand and eight, the Detroit Lions went
four and ohero in the preseason. They did not win
a game in the regular season, So what does it
matter about it year? And the question really super Bowl?
That was their super Bowl. But the question is you

(09:55):
don't want the preseason matter when it comes to the
regular season. So it matters now because we don't have
anything else to go off of. When you zoom out
big picture arrow is still pointing up. You going to Jacksonville,
you play well. You go into Arizona, you play well.
All of that is forgotten. I think fans are just
looking for something to latch onto. That was sort of

(10:16):
the chatter in the aftermath of Houston. Hey, is it optimism?
Is it cautious optimism? Is it pessimism? Where do you
want to go with this? I'm with you, Jim. I
still think the arrow is pointing up. I still think
part of what you want to accomplish in the preseason
is to get those cobwebs out.

Speaker 6 (10:33):
No, for sure, And you know, there were signs of
progress on the field to Eugene. We were talking about
it during the broadcast early on that the first game
against Cleveland, they were running on the edges. You know,
you always always talk about the edges and containing and
so Kurk Coleman's harping on that. Of course in the
first game, they did a better job in this game.
Now think it's got gashed with some inside runs, but
you were able to address something and fix it. I

(10:54):
think in the regular season, when you've got your full
complimented players out there. Derek Brown played three plays or
whatever you play. So we have Derek Brown out there
for the whole game, you know things like that are
going to be cleaned up and taken care of. So
I think there are some things with this team where
it's like it's a game of adjustments. But when you
only play two series, you don't get to see those adjustments.
You don't get to see the Patriots come back in

(11:15):
the Super Bowl from a twenty eight three deposit in
the second half. If you just go by the first
couple of series of that game, or if you watch
the Panthers in the say Super Bowl thirty eight, you
wouldn't think what a great finish with three touchdowns in
the fourth quarter that happened. So it's every regular season
game is a game of adjustments that this time of
year doesn't permit that time to see what that would
evolve into.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
And Eugene in a normal regular season game, most teams
in the Panthers are one of them. They have an
opening script, and I think for you know folks not
familiar with the ins and outs of that Eugene, you
know this well. The one thing that opening script is
designed to do is to essentially get your opponents to
show you their cards. Hey, if we come out in

(11:55):
this are they in base or are they bringing in
a nickelback? I line up in this formation? Are they
gonna go man? Are they gonna go zone? You're in
that information gathering mode in the preseason. It's not like
it's not it's it's not exactly three D four D chests.

Speaker 7 (12:12):
No, it's not.

Speaker 5 (12:13):
I'm remember coach homerim of coach wallsh Uh. They were
always scripting plays. The first twenty five plays was scripted.
There was designed we would do that in practice. When
I was a Green Bay everything was scripted when we're
going this play, this play, and everything was set up
forcing you to get into situations. But a preseason you're
not really doing that. You're doing some installation and you're
you're checking out personnel.

Speaker 7 (12:35):
But it's it's mainly that it's not the goal is
not really to win.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
You're not game plan I'm not.

Speaker 5 (12:40):
Really game planning to find out you know what I
can go ahead and do. I'm I'm looking at Okay,
I'm gonna give two, but maybe five runs. I'm gonna
see what he does with this. You know, I'm gonna
get donald You're doing that type of stuff. And so
it's a little bit different in preseason. And I got
a quick question for you. I mean, we talked about
the office on on Thursday that they look really good.

Speaker 7 (13:00):
You talked about some of the thing. What did the
defense look like?

Speaker 5 (13:03):
Because I wonder if there was any carryover from what
we saw defensively Thursday to what we saw defensively.

Speaker 7 (13:10):
In the game.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
Yeah, so full disclosure. The way the practice fields were structured,
he had the offense going on one side, the defense
on the other, and I, like most of the folks there,
spent most of my time watching the offense just knowing
how good this Houston defense was. Yes, you got Derek
Stingley in the secondary, Will Anderson he's a beast, Neil Hunter,

(13:32):
two great pass rushers. How did the Panthers hold up
against that, right, So, I admittedly spent most of my
time watching the offense. A few times I did watch
the defense. I will say this, you know, j C.
Horn wasn't out there, but Corey Thornton made some plays
and defensively, from what I saw and I didn't watch
all of it, they seem to acquit themselves pretty well.

(13:54):
And even the postgame chatter talking to some of the
coaches afterwards, they were really encouraged with how their defense
held up against Houston.

Speaker 7 (14:02):
That's good.

Speaker 5 (14:02):
That's really good to hear because I think, you know,
one of the things that I've been harping on all
year long was that the defense third down percentage, getting
their brown back.

Speaker 7 (14:11):
DJ want them that whole.

Speaker 5 (14:12):
Crew, what the linebackers look like, and I want to
see this team in preseason really gel together. We talked
about the edges being compromised in the first game against Cleveland.
Well they cleaned that up, but then we got some
little gases inside. And so I'm looking to see what
does our run defense look like, because if we have
a really good run defense, this is gonna be a really,
really good season.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
Dave can Alison, You'll hear them. In the next segment,
talks about how important this week is from a practice standpoint.
What matters on Thursday.

Speaker 5 (14:40):
Thursday is many as you're still in installation. They typically
in the regular season, but on this Thursday, what coach
is gonna be worried about is where is a complement
of our guys too? If we get people hurt, who
goes in? Who is that person? Is it gonna be
one of the receivers? What receiver will it be? So
you're gonna be a auditioning and a lot of people

(15:01):
are going to be playing that we don't really know,
and it's because the coaches have given a test to
say would you be able to make this team? If
such as such goes out? Cannot count on you. If
I can't count on you, you won't be here.

Speaker 6 (15:13):
It's gonna be a lot of is Thomas and Cohn
your extra linebacker outside John Radagan because these are gonna
be special teams, guys that as you said, we saw
it last year. We saw Claude cherrilists, we saw women
and these players become players and starters last year at
linebacker positions. They're going to factor in in seventeen regular
season games as positioned players too. So you want to
have not only good special teams guys to round out
your roster, but guys that can fill in for a

(15:35):
couple of weeks when you got other players get.

Speaker 5 (15:37):
Hurt and you need the bodies anyway, because you're not
playing your starters, So you need the bodies to put
a compliment of players out there anyway, and you're just
hoping that guys don't get hurt.

Speaker 4 (15:48):
Still ahead here on Panther Talk, we'll hear from head
coach Dave Kanalis. Jim spoke to Rico Dowbell earlier today,
and I spoke with one of the camps standouts, wide
receiver Bryce Tremaine. All that ahead here on the Carolina
Panthers Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
This is Panther Talk. Ron. Do you buy Bank of America?
What would you like the power to do?

Speaker 8 (16:12):
I love the talent. I'm excited for this group.

Speaker 3 (16:15):
I know that we'll continue to learn from these experiences,
but I want to make sure that they feel the
reality of not making the play when.

Speaker 8 (16:23):
It's there to be made. This league is too hard.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
We have to take advantage of those moments where things
are schemed up well. We have to be able to
you know, maintain our blocks through the through the whistle
without holding. We have to do all the little things
or else our talent's not gonna be able to show up.

Speaker 7 (16:39):
You know.

Speaker 8 (16:40):
The consistency is what I'm looking for.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
And we have a really important week this week, you know,
going into the Pittsburgh game.

Speaker 4 (16:46):
Panther Talk continues. We're joined by Panthers head coach Dave Kannalis.
Joint practice versus the actual preseason game, how do you
compart mentalize the two because you're there, you're watching every snap.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
Yeah, I mean, just the excitement for a really talented
group learning to play together, and you know, to be
able to compete against you know, in the Texans practice
a fantastic secondary, some really good rushers on the edge,
and and really a defense that just plays a good
physical style of football. And you know, to be able

(17:22):
to compete against the best, you know, is what I'm
looking for. And that's what we came away with, you know,
And it was the same thing in the Cleveland week
with the joint practice. To be able to you know,
play against some fantastic players on both sides of the ball.
You know, I'm really excited about about this group. About
our level of ability to compete with anybody. And that's

(17:43):
the expectation, you know for our group.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
Fans only see the games and you're privy to all
the other stuff. So what's your message to them if
they're only going off the games?

Speaker 3 (17:55):
Yeah, I mean this is this is not our standard
of football. The penalties, some of the execution, just making
some plays, a few plays here and there, that's NFL football.
You know, to be able to do that consistently as
a group, you know, I keep our expectations in standard
for everybody that's here. We have ninety guys right now,

(18:15):
and we did not play up to our standards. There
was improvement in areas certainly, you know, there's stuff to
be excited about and flashes. But I would love and
if you talk to our guys, they would love to
be able to put a brand of football out there
four or fourth quarters, regardless of who we're asking to
go out there, that is Panthers football standard. It allows

(18:37):
me to coach them hard. They want to be challenged,
They want to be pushed a strain to fix things,
to clean up penalties, to make the play, and they
don't want it to feel like, oh, hey, guys, this
is just preseason football.

Speaker 8 (18:49):
That's not the way we feel.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
We're going out there to win, and the fact that
we don't, we're all a little bit disappointed when we
come out of those games, but it allows us to
coach them hard and scrutinize the things we need to
improve on.

Speaker 4 (19:00):
What's the significance of this week of practice?

Speaker 8 (19:04):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (19:04):
This is so important because as we start to transition,
this week is our last opportunity to get the high
intensity competition in practice with this many guys. You know,
there's just more opportunities for it tomorrow and then we
have to get ready for another game, and then we
have to start evaluating our roster. We come back in

(19:26):
a week where you you cut your you cut your
team down, and you don't have a full squad. You
don't have a full practice squad till say Wednesday. So
this is so valuable to have, like the normal rhythms
of training camps still at our disposal. This this next
practice is so important for so many guys. It's not
just about Thursday night, It's about tomorrow and one last chance,

(19:47):
you know, to show the coaches something, to show themselves something.
And then and then one more chance in the game
against the Steelers.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
Couple of position battle questions. One, where are you at
safety opposite Mary?

Speaker 3 (19:59):
Yeah, it's it's great. That's a great conversation because Nick
Scott has done a fantastic job. He's been so steady
and consistent for us and made some really nice plays
in the game. Lathan Ransom, he sure looks the part.
I mean, he's a physical player to a fault sometimes
and you know, a couple of times it gets him
into trouble. But I'd rather say woe than sick of them.

(20:19):
I love guys who are just going with they're gonna
they're going to default with effort and aggression. And then
Demanie Richardson, who's just grown and been more comfortable in
the system. And I think that's a great tandem to
just talk about. What about place kicker great competition. I
mean one guy made one, one guy didn't.

Speaker 8 (20:37):
Last game.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
You know, the week before, Matt nailed all his kickoffs
and made his field goal. You know, I wish we
would have given him more opportunities. We only had two shots.

Speaker 8 (20:45):
In the game.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
You know, we got to do a better job offensively,
so we can evaluate these guys. But We've had kicks
in the joint practices, kicks in our regular practices to evaluate.
We've got a ton of information at our disposal, so
we'll go one more week with it.

Speaker 4 (20:58):
And as you kind of try to put together the
framework for the fifty three man roster, what are some
of the position groups where you know you're still going
to be evaluating guys this Thursday. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
Absolutely, I mean I think you know in the secondary
that's a critical one. You know, you got uh you
got a Caleb Evans and Corey Thornton and Shamar Bartholomew
who've been battling, you know, to find that third spot
really behind Mike and JC. Who's good you know Shaw
Smith Wade is dominating his his spot right now at Nickel.
You know, are there other guys? Can it be Trevion Thomas?
Can it be Mike Read? You know, to to push

(21:31):
for a spot to be that that next Nickel? And
the key to all these conversations aniche, as you know,
is special teams. Who are the guys that can get
off the vice and go and be a great gunner
and get down there on the punters face, who can
cover kicks, who can make those tackles, who can hold
up in the protections, who's our returner going to be?

Speaker 7 (21:49):
You know?

Speaker 3 (21:49):
And these are all the questions that we have two games.
We got one more shot for guys to really show
us in those phases and for for the rest of
Panthers fans to hear, like where watching our guys. We're
watching all the other teams to see who's giving the
kind of effort, who's getting off of blocks, because those
are the people we can count on being up on
game day.

Speaker 4 (22:09):
And finally, coach Derek Brown made his return. When you
were in Tampa, you had to scheme up your offense
to account for him. What's that like for an offensive
coordinator to account for a Derek Brown?

Speaker 3 (22:21):
Yeah, I mean the challenge is if you run at him,
he usually if you don't get a combo, he usually
knocks the guy back into your line behind the line
of scrimmage. If you run away from him, he usually
sheds a block and chases it flat down the line
and makes it really hard to cut off on the backside.
Because he's just NonStop. He presents some major challenges, you know,

(22:43):
And I'm excited that he got to be back out there.
He's begging me to play. We got him three plays, Okay,
that's enough, get him out. But he just wanted to
get out there, get his hands on somebody. And you know,
fell into one run on the very first play of
the game, which was perfect. You know, got a pass
rush in there, and and again it's about the night before.

(23:04):
It's about the morning of getting your body ready, to
getting your mind right to go. So I'm glad he
was out there.

Speaker 4 (23:09):
Thank you.

Speaker 8 (23:09):
All right, thank you, Nace.

Speaker 4 (23:11):
We're back after this on the Carolina Panthers A radio network.

Speaker 1 (23:17):
This is Panther Talk, brought to you buy Atrium Health.
Had Atrium Health we do more to keep you moving, achieving,
striving at every age and stage so you can live fully.

Speaker 8 (23:30):
It was really just a physical thing.

Speaker 5 (23:32):
You know.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
We had forty plus reps you know, within the span
of about an hour two days ago. It was fantastic football,
fantastic work against a really physical, tough team, and uh,
you know, I just I loved what the energy we brought.
I loved the way we battled all the way through
the two minute drill at the end in practice, and
for me it felt like I had gotten enough. I

(23:53):
wanted them to get a couple of series, and you know,
really they had to earn it on that second one.
You know, we got to make a play, We got
to catch a ball, keep the sticks going to be
able to get the work that we wanted to get.
But after that, it was like, we're not going to
go back out there. We have a lot of a
lot of team to evaluate, and so we kind of
moved on from there.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
VI Is Panther talk on the Carolina Panthers radio network
and a delete.

Speaker 4 (24:14):
Handoff to down over punches over top.

Speaker 8 (24:16):
He's in top.

Speaker 7 (24:17):
Down by catch.

Speaker 6 (24:18):
Other Panthers running back Rico Dabble, of course, free agent
addition from the Dallas Cowboys this offseason. Two preseason games
in the books, one more to go, guys, not too
far away from the start of the regular season. Work
in progress obviously, but overall, how do you feel about
the state of how this offense is coming along?

Speaker 9 (24:32):
I think it's coming along well. You know, we've been
able to, like you said, the preseason games we didn't
really get to do. We didn't do well in those,
but you know, it's a long a game would start
off like that anytime it's the NFL, Like they can
play NFL's just how we played the defense and do
so and you got a whole game to pick it
up kind of. So it's been limited reps and but
I think as far as training camp and the two

(24:52):
joint practices we have, we show well. So I think
it would be perfectly fun.

Speaker 6 (24:56):
Style wise, you see some teams go with two different
types of backs. Would you agree with the assessment that
you and Chew birth similar in terms of how you
guys play, that you can both catch the ball of
the backfield, block and do the whole thing.

Speaker 4 (25:06):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 9 (25:07):
I think we both pretty much similar downhill runners, one
cut guys make you miss and trying and were very
explosive too, So definitely think we similar.

Speaker 6 (25:16):
When completely healthy, this is one of the best offensive
lines obviously in the league last year, and you've talked
before about how that was kind of a recruiting tool
for you seeing that when it's completely healthy. How exciting
he is that to know that you've got those guys
up front for you at the offensive line.

Speaker 9 (25:29):
Very exciting, you know, when everybody healthy and we out
there winning it in the trenches, that battle up front
and they opening up those holes, I mean, that opens
up the whole offense. So when we get healthy and
those guys healthy, definitely a show and take the offense
to the next level of what we can do, open
up the past game and the run game as well.

Speaker 6 (25:46):
Bryce Young's taking command of this offense as being the
starting quarterback as of second half of last year. When
you see him play and you've played with Dak Prescott
and all this before, what do you see about Bryce
Young that maybe makes him special?

Speaker 9 (25:56):
Duel threat? That's one of the things I look at
and today's that's one of the main things that part
of the duel threat. I think that's him. And then
just his understanding and command, like you said, taking command,
his leadership and things like that. But it's understanding of
the game. He's only like what year three, and then
his understanding of the game was seeing where it's coming from,
knowing what he got to do out there and executing.

(26:17):
I think that's what his game is going to the
next level.

Speaker 6 (26:20):
It's pressure anywhere in the NFL, but Dallas says, we
all know is the American's team thing. It's a lot
of scrutiny, national scrutiny and so forth. What was it
like being a part of that what called circus, but
the extra media attention that comes with being a Dallas
Cowboy while you were there.

Speaker 7 (26:33):
I didn't mind it.

Speaker 9 (26:34):
I think it depends on the person, but me as
me as a player there, I didn't mind it. Like so,
it was never a problem for me. It is what
it is.

Speaker 2 (26:42):
You know.

Speaker 9 (26:42):
You only can control what you can control, and my
job was to go there and play football and go
to work, and that's what I did.

Speaker 7 (26:47):
And now you're back home.

Speaker 6 (26:48):
Grew up in Nashville, played at South Carolina, which it
means to you to be back into Carolina's playing your Pro.

Speaker 9 (26:52):
Bowl, that means a lot, you know. Growing up, I
wouldn't say I was a Panthers fan, but definitely went
to I went to South Carolina. But it's definitely nice
getting back to come home and play at the highest
level in my home state in front of my family,
in front of my friends, and like I said, do
it at the highest level. So definitely a blessing, all right,
last day.

Speaker 7 (27:10):
I think I saw it.

Speaker 6 (27:11):
At high school, you played quarterback right your senior year
and never had to be called But like Greg Olsen's
volunteered in the past and so forth, if called upon
at some point this year in the emergency situation, would
you play quarterback?

Speaker 9 (27:20):
Yeah, I'm actually the emergency quarterback. Yeah I am, so
that's I'm an emergency quarterback right now. So I started.
We're getting closer to the regular season, so after the
practices and stuff. Now they just told me today that
I'll be doing the emergency quarterback stuff. So hey, that'll
be my opportunity to get out there and showing a
position switch.

Speaker 6 (27:37):
I'd love to hear that tib of a question by
me too. I'm gonta to ask that question.

Speaker 7 (27:40):
Rico, good to see you, Thank.

Speaker 8 (27:41):
You, thank you.

Speaker 6 (27:42):
Having a good Moore Panther Talk coming up after this.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
This is Panther Talk, Walt you blind Coke deserves the
great taste of Goca Cola because fan work is thirsty work.

Speaker 4 (27:56):
We're here with Panthers wide receiver Bryson Tremaine Bryce, and
you've had a pretty interesting journey. Let's start from the beginning.
Coming out of high school. What kind of prospect were you?

Speaker 10 (28:08):
I wouldn't say.

Speaker 2 (28:09):
I wouldn't saying I was a super highly recruited prospect.
I just I had a few IVY League opportunities. And
if you walk on opportunities.

Speaker 10 (28:18):
To the Bay twelve and that's about it.

Speaker 4 (28:20):
When did you first meet Brad Izick?

Speaker 10 (28:24):
I first met Brad Egzich.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
I think when I went to the Stanford football camp
when I was a junior, so probably in twenty sixteen,
and that was the first time.

Speaker 4 (28:34):
And then as the story goes, from what we found out,
Brad says he tried to convince you to come to
walk on to Stanford. Tell us about that.

Speaker 2 (28:42):
Yeah, he first tried to convince me to walk on
to Stanford. And I wasn't really going for it at
first because I wanted to go somewhere you know where
I felt like more wanted I guess, you know, like
so meaning like the IVY leagues were offering me and
they were saying, oh, if you come here, you know
you're gonna play right away. So I kind of wanted

(29:03):
that opportunity at at Stanford or at you know, one
of those bigger schools. So at first, you know, I
wanted to go somewhere else.

Speaker 4 (29:10):
What was that experience as a walk on and having
to prove yourself? What was that?

Speaker 8 (29:15):
Like?

Speaker 10 (29:16):
I would say, it was just.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
I just learned that you know, you gotta come, come
and work hard every single day and just be like consistent,
and you know, you sometimes don't see the light, like
it's not the light's not right in front of you.
Sometimes it's you know, a year. Sometimes it's like six
months down the road. So you've got to keep working
and then you know, the light comes out, you know

(29:40):
at the end of the day.

Speaker 4 (29:42):
Has that experience helped you in your pro career?

Speaker 2 (29:46):
Yeah, I feel like coming in as an undrafted free agent,
it was it's been pretty similar. Just just continue to work.
You know, my rookie year, I was on practice squad
and then last year I was on practice squad. Book
I elevated a few games to play in. So hopefully
I just keep on building on top of that and uh,
you know, the light, the light will come through.

Speaker 4 (30:06):
We see your size. You're big guy, six'. Four what
would you say is the part of your game that
you value the?

Speaker 2 (30:16):
MOST i think the part of my game THAT i
value the most is just like my like my my
speed and like, effort like you, know the WAY i
come off the ball on special, teams the way you,
know the WAY i run down the, field and just
playing hard and you, know making plays when it.

Speaker 4 (30:34):
Counts who are the wide receivers that you looked up
to growing?

Speaker 2 (30:37):
UP i think you know guys like you, Know Calvin
johnson Or Randy, moss you, know just making those big.

Speaker 10 (30:43):
PLAYS i love watching those.

Speaker 4 (30:45):
Guys what's it been like to develop a bit of
a connection With Bryce young throughout? Camp it's been.

Speaker 2 (30:51):
Good i've definitely, been you, know catching from him a
little bit more more, recently and it's been good to
build that connection and you, know build that. Trust you
know That i'll be in the spot that he wants
when he looks my.

Speaker 4 (31:05):
Way, NOW i THINK i saw you played a lot
OF x in. College they've kind of used you a
little all over the place a lot AT z here
with The. Panthers has that been a transition and adjustment for? You?

Speaker 2 (31:18):
Uh, not not a super big, transition BECAUSE i did
play a lot OF x At stanford and my past
two YEARS i played a lot OF.

Speaker 10 (31:24):
X but it's not too. Much it's not too much.

Speaker 2 (31:28):
Different there's a little bit, more you, know blocking rules
and stuff like. That But i'm a big, guy SO
i feel LIKE i can handle handle that. Task so
it's it's been an, adjustment but it hasn't been too.

Speaker 4 (31:40):
Bad last, Thing, bryson what have you gotten from some
of the veterans in this receiving, room Like Adam thielen
and A Hunter.

Speaker 2 (31:47):
Renfro, yeah guys like like guys like, them they just
know how to get, open they know where to, be you,
know the it's just so naturally them like the move
to make to get THE dB office spot and just
get and just find find that. Window, so you, know
just hearing them talk, about you, know certain routes and
how to how to you, know run it versus different.

(32:09):
Coverages and then you, Know adam gives me some advice
like you, know just staying lower you know When i'm
coming coming out off the.

Speaker 7 (32:18):
Line.

Speaker 10 (32:19):
Uh, so you, know it's it's been really.

Speaker 4 (32:21):
Valuable Panthers Wide, Receiver bryce And. Tremaine this Is Panther
talk on The Carolina Panthers Radio.

Speaker 1 (32:28):
Network Panther talk continues on The Carolina Panthers Radio.

Speaker 4 (32:36):
Network Anyse, Shrop Jim, Zochi Eugene robinson hanging with you
in Our bank Of America stadium. Studios let's talk about
THIS Nfc South. Division start With New. Orleans Tyler shuck
looks to be the front runner to be their starting
quarterback second round. Pick saints are in a. REBUILD i

(32:59):
gotta imagine that are Hoping Arch manning declares for the
draft after the, season, yes.

Speaker 6 (33:04):
Which archie said is not going to happen about arch
so unless something good things.

Speaker 1 (33:09):
Changed but then, you as we sit here, today you.

Speaker 4 (33:10):
Got to figure out how to tank for next season.
Two and.

Speaker 6 (33:14):
We also don't know That Arch manning will be you,
Know Peyton. MANNING i, mean he has yet to play
much college, football so we'll we'll. See there'll be some
good quarterbacks for everybody in this draft coming. Out but you,
know Things i've seen in general are in terms of,
Talent cleveland And New orleans there two worst rosters in the.
League So New, orleans, yeah not only should be the
team that is.

Speaker 4 (33:36):
Here the way he said, that like you could hear
The ohio come.

Speaker 7 (33:38):
OUT.

Speaker 6 (33:41):
I kind of felt like like a, Positive like it's
not Justin. Browns there's another team almost as bad as they.
Are BUT i, think you, Know Tampa bay again As
atlanta is poised if the quarterback thing is right because
of all the skill positions they've been assembling through the.
Years so but, Yeah Tampa bay is still the team
in The chase AND i think The panthers are kind
of the wild card in all of, This like you,
know they they are a team mount in a Cent

(34:02):
so what does that look like at the.

Speaker 8 (34:03):
End what is the jump from five to five to?

Speaker 7 (34:05):
What what's it gonna be this?

Speaker 5 (34:06):
Year and that's WHY i think That bryce needs to
make that. JUMP i think That bryce can go ahead
and have such a season that all the quarterbacks in
our conference you're not talking about. Him you're talking About.
Bryce AND i really believe he's gonna have that type
of season AND i hope he. DOES i hope he
takes on the challenge when you look At Baker mayfell like,
This i'm gonna be much better Than Baker. Mayfield i'm

(34:27):
gonna be much better than the quarterback here that Says
i'm gonna be Much i'm gonna be that. Guy AND
i hope he's taking on that mentality BECAUSE i think
he is poised and prime ready to go ahead and
show out this.

Speaker 7 (34:38):
Year for some, REASON i just think is this is.

Speaker 4 (34:40):
Time you, Know tampa has had a choke hold on this,
division but they won the division with ten wins last
year nine the year, before and.

Speaker 7 (34:48):
Nobody squeaks it, out, Man they squeaked that.

Speaker 4 (34:50):
Out nobody's running, Away, no with this. DIVISION i think
in twenty twenty, two you, know The bucks were again
right around five hundred for the division. Title there's almost
had the division won that season and almost Beat. Tampa
New orleans is in a full on rebuild With. Atlanta
they made a couple of moves in the draft to

(35:11):
go Get Jalen, walker to go Get James, pierce finally
addressing their pass rushes which had been non existent the
last few. Years Can Michael penix stay. Healthy that's been
a question for him in his career in.

Speaker 5 (35:24):
College BUT i THINK i think he has a lot
of upside though he.

Speaker 4 (35:28):
Does but, again he's an older, quarterback right for a young,
quarterback HE'S i, think what twenty six years.

Speaker 7 (35:34):
Old twenty, six twenty, six twenty seven years? Old yep.

Speaker 4 (35:36):
Uh and then there's some age on The tampa. Roster
right at some Point Mike evans has to get old.
Away he's still show right up though he.

Speaker 5 (35:44):
Does he shows, Up he shows he shows, up and
don't forget Somehow Baker mayfel has been playing out of his.

Speaker 4 (35:51):
Mind he's played, Well he's played.

Speaker 7 (35:53):
Extremely well when he leaves.

Speaker 5 (35:54):
Here even when he left hand and he went to
The rams, FIRST i think it was The rams are Charged.

Speaker 7 (35:59):
Ram i'm, like, man he looks like a three hundred
yards or. Something who is this? Guy and then he
goes To.

Speaker 5 (36:05):
Tampa i'm, like he's found a home and he is
so confident that he thinks he's the best quarterback in the,
league or at least one among, them you, know and
he's been playing that.

Speaker 4 (36:15):
Way they got a couple of young receivers to the.
Wings you, know if something happens To, Evans godwin's coming
off an, Injury Kate otten's coming off a strong season
defensively that went, out Got Hasan reddick and who's a.
Beast he's to, me there's still.

Speaker 6 (36:33):
The team to be win The division four at the,
Benchmark atlanta is trying to be. That and for The,
PANTHERS i, think you, know it's if you got to
a good start and it gets and pad some wins,
early you can get on a. Roll those division games
could be really.

Speaker 5 (36:47):
Interesting that's WHY i think the schedule so much favors
The Carolina. Panthers this early. Schedule i'm, like, dude you
could go run a, table go run.

Speaker 4 (36:55):
It there are opportunities in the first couple of months For.
CAROLINE i. Know before we get, there there's still one
more preseason Game thursday at home against The.
