Speaker 1 (00:00):
The following is an exclusive presentation of the Carolina Panthers
and the National Football.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
League's Tough Panther Tee and They're Tell and They're Doll.
This is Panther Talk, presented by Bosh power Tools on
the Carolina Panthers Network.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
It's about controlling what we control, making the plays that
come to us. You know, it's it's a hard enough
league as it is, and so when we have success
or we're on the verge of success in plays, whether
it's making a tackle, whether it's making the catch, you know,
making the kicks, the block, whatever those things are, it's like,
the consistency of the execution has to be the standard.
(00:39):
And that's the thing that we keep chasing is when
you play good teams, it's going to come down to
a play here and a play there. And that's the
type of ball that we need to get to.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
And now, along with Jim Zoki and Eugene Robinson, here's
a Niche Shruff with Panther Talk live from the Panthers
broadcast facility at Bank of America Stadium.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
That was Dave Canalis after the game on Sunday. Three
weeks in a row, the Panthers take a first place
team right down to the wire, it comes down to
the final minute of the game, or as was the
case a week ago, into overtime. Panthers coming up just
a bit short over the weekend in Philadelphia, and we
(01:22):
bring in the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, Dave Canalis.
Dave great to visit with you, as we do every Monday.
I thought one of the things that was messaged from
the locker room from the players after the game Sunday,
you just got the sense, Hey, we know we're better,
We're tired of being close, even against the elite of
(01:42):
the NFL. When you hear that from the guys in
the locker room, what's kind of your message back to them.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
It's about the finish, It's about execution and the controllables.
And I think they'd be the first ones to say it.
And you hear them. You hear the belief, you hear
the expectation we can play with anybody, and that that
is that's refreshing, But at the same time, it is frustrating,
you know, And it does come down to the margins
(02:09):
are so tight in this league, especially when you're playing
really good teams and and that's where we're headed. You know,
the goal this whole year has been finding our best
and we're still in pursuit of that.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Coach.
Speaker 5 (02:20):
I remember that when I was when you were first
about to become the head coach, and I was looking
at your resume. I was looking at what you've done
with Geno Smith. Then I looked at what you did
with with Baker Mayfield. What are you doing with Bryce
Young that may mimic anything that you've done with them,
Because the success that we're seeing right now is paying dividends.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Jean.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
It's a good system, and it's a group it's a
collective group effort, and it's you know, it's Will Harger
in the room talking to him all the time. I
come in there and make sure we're on the same page,
but it's all of us, you know, committed to it.
And then honestly, you know, it's creating a creating a
system that becomes more and more like the system that
(03:05):
Bryce needs to have success. And it's the commitment to
doing those things more. I think, if I can put
it plainly, and we're getting closer and closer that the
more games we have with Bryce.
Speaker 6 (03:15):
Dave, you guys were three out of five on fourth down,
so you gambled early. You got the touchdown to Tommy
Tremble in a situation where some teams might have settled
for a fieldgal attempt. There is a mindset heading into
a game, is it do you kind of play it
to a series by series or what's the thought process
when you want to get that extra down and try
to make something happen.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah, I got a lot of help from George Lee
upstairs and you coming into the game. We really thought,
playing against a team that could really run the ball
and control the time and possession, if we could steal
a possession or two by being a little bit more
aggressive on fourth down. We were going to try that.
And we had some success and a couple of them
didn't work out for us, but that was the thought
going in.
Speaker 5 (03:52):
So Coach, on that same point, was this so important
for your game plan to win the possession of time game?
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Because as you absolutely did that, you.
Speaker 5 (04:01):
Know it was.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
It was important for us to try to balance it
out so that our defense wasn't seeing seventy plays, you know,
I think we saw fifty some odd plays on defense,
and then offensively we're able to make enough first downs.
We had sounds on the day in the run game, Eugene,
which you always, you know, bring up was a big
part of that.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Coach with Xavier ly Get what was your message to
him after the game.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
We're counting on you, We're gonna come back to you.
We're going to be in that situation again, the ball
is going to go up, we're gonna call your number again,
and we know you'll get it done.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
With some of his drops, especially recently last few weeks,
is it a technique thing. Is there something that you
point to, something that jumps out on film that's easily correctable.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
He'd be the first one to tell you just got
to come up with the catch, you know. And and
we try not to go into all the minutia of
it because then now you start playing ahead game. He
knows he can make these plays, and we're counting on
him and we trust him.
Speaker 6 (04:58):
And I'm feeling they're in the locker room yesterday and said, look,
you know, you haven't been a receiver in the league
if you haven't had that. As much as that hurts
in that game and in that moment, having guys like
that and Josie Jewel and some of the veteran players
helping with those young players. That mentoring that that comes
from teammates. How much does that help in the locker
room in addition to the coaching they're getting from you guys.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
It's huge, Jim.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
You know, it's just it's the encouragement that, like, yes,
you want to be in high stakes, high risk adventure
and you're the primary target with the game on the line,
get used to it, and he will.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
And coach, I want to go on the defense side
of the ball. When you assess what you guys were
able to do, they said, I fifty seven plays at
the defense were part of how did the defense kind
of great out because it's still an explosive Philadelphia Eagles
team that they had to stop.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Yeah, so, I mean they the good part was we
minimized the huge place, although they still had two more
than we did. But it was the accumulation factor, Eugene,
you know, the two hundred yards overall, you know that
really control cald it and you know, we we had
we were up and down on third down, but they
ended up edging us out there. And then the red
zone defense that had been you know, holding teams to
(06:09):
field goals gave up three touchdowns. Of course one was
off of a turnover, but those are kind of some
of the areas that you know, we needed to attack.
But I thought, all in all was a pretty pretty
good game plan in terms of just like making sure
that we minimize some of the explosives.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
And coach the pass rush. We continue to see pressure
on the quarterback four more sacks on Sunday. How would
you assess the growth and evolution of this panther pass
rush from you know, where things were and where things
are now.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Yeah, it all ties in together, and Agarro has done
a great job of tying in some you know, timely
pressures called with just our four man rushes. And the
coverage is also improving. And so when you have the
coverage unit and the pass rush meeting halfway, then you
can start playing really good football against the pass, which
is which I felt about on Sunday.
Speaker 6 (07:01):
Of course, unfortunately in the headlines today you talked about it.
Earlier today was Jonathan Brooks with the torn acl after
fighting for a year to get back, and we all
know that that ste devastating.
Speaker 7 (07:12):
What was your chat like with him?
Speaker 6 (07:13):
And it doesn't probably help him at this exact moment,
but someone like Thomas Davis has been through it three times.
There's certainly some some other players that have been through
situations somewhat similar to that where it's a long recovery.
But what's kind of the overall message with that.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Yeah, just heartbroken for JB and the work that he
put in to get back, you know, and with all
the excitement and all that you know around it, But
it was just like, n just get back to just
enjoying football, having a good time, seeing his energy, you know,
two weeks ago against the Bucks, making a couple of
nice plays, to see him come alive, you know, and
get excited about the opportunities, and so, you know, first
(07:48):
and foremost just like sitting there with him and like,
I just wanted him to know that we have his
back the whole way and that we're working all together
trying to find our best and then when he comes
back to us will be in a better place and
we'll be ready for him.
Speaker 5 (08:02):
Coaches, oftentimes we're talking about what you know, we're talking
about players, and you have to be sometimes dad, Sometimes
you have to be real tough coach. How do you
balance that when you have to talk to Pinero? One
of your guys who's been really outstanding and now seem
to be in some type of maybe I don't know,
mental thing and something.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
I'm not sure. What's your message to him?
Speaker 3 (08:25):
Yeah, he just admits another kick on left hash and
that's something that we just have to attack. And I
just kind of I encourage all of our guys, you know,
Xavier Eddie, I just encourage them to just go right
back to the basics, you know, and and uh and
go through your process just like you normally would through
the finish the whole thing, all everything that he goes through,
go through your process and trust that over the course
(08:47):
of years and time, you've had a lot of success.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
And coaches to come back to the injury to Brooks
with Jonathan being out again, Miles Sanders on I on
are what is what is the running back room the
depth chart look like right now behind Cuba.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Yeah, we're counting on Mike Boone to step up big
time for us to to continue to help us carry
the load and you know, be the balance offense that
we want to be. You know, where we're looking around
just you know, checking out all the names to see
if there's somebody that can come in and help us
as well.
Speaker 6 (09:26):
Old school yesterday seeing Cuba twenty six carries, they get
twenty eight a couple of weeks ago. But you know
you've got that back when you need it, right when
you might need thirty carries out of a guy that
he could do it. He went over a thousand yards
rushing on the season. You could you kind of just
kind of encapsulate what a special season he's putting together
behind that offensive line.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Absolutely, he'd be the first to tell you it starts
up front. It starts with the big boys in the
commitment to each other and playing a physical style of ball.
And then it was you know, it was myself with
our offensive staff saying to get this thing started for
the mentality, we want Cuba Hubbard to be that guy
so that we can have a starting point, we can
have something to hang our hat on while we're building
(10:04):
the rest of it.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
Well, Black Cher share some of those duties as well.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Absolutely, yeah, and he's day to day you know, Raheem
will will definitely be a part of that.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
Dave, appreciate you as always, Thanks again, and good luck
this weekend against Dallas.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
All right, thanks guys, than Dave.
Speaker 8 (10:20):
Canalis head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
A little bit of groundhogs day from a week ago,
Not so much from the Kansas City game, because that
Kansas City game three weeks ago, Jim, that was in hindsight.
Now with a couple more weeks of evidence, tipping point moment, right,
you can tell, oh, all right, beat the Saints, not
very good, beat the Giants, not very good, beat almost
beat Kansas City.
Speaker 8 (10:43):
This team is better, getting better.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Then you take Tampa Bay to the wire and that
was a game where really the Panthers cost themselves to
missed kicks, costly turnover and overtime. And then oh, Philly,
hottest team in the NFL. That never felt like the
Panthers were punching up in weight class. We knew Philly
could run the ball. They ran the ball Philly Again,
like Kansas City, didn't play a bad game. They played
(11:06):
pretty well, and the Panthers went toe to toe with them,
almost won the game. And I get the frustration coming
from the locker room. I also think that means this
team is ready to win. And when you look at
these last four games Dallas, Arizona, Tampa, and Atlanta, I
expect Carolina are being all four of those games and
at least win two.
Speaker 6 (11:27):
Yeah, I would love to see them get that reward
because they've been so close and not finished with three
and to your point, win five or six by the
end of the year. And I think two when you
look back at that Kansas City game, you score late.
You had to get a two point version just to
get it tied. You know that the one last week
was was difficult because you had the lead with thirty
seconds to go in regulation. You know this one, if
(11:49):
he catches that ball with forty four seconds to go,
you've got the lead again.
Speaker 7 (11:52):
So you're in the same situation.
Speaker 6 (11:53):
We just got to hold them for less than a minute,
and you might as we talked about.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Now they can't run, they've got and they're not that
great and throwing a rock either.
Speaker 6 (12:02):
As we talked about, that would have been like the
lead story on you know, all the l shows today
was what happened in Philadelphia and what the Panthers are becoming.
But I think you know the positives are Bryce we've
talked about obviously is a lot of that, and you know,
you found your quarterback and his confidence and you can
really see the vision with all that now.
Speaker 7 (12:18):
But defense is keeping in the game, Eugene.
Speaker 6 (12:20):
It's like, you know, sure they ran for tw hundred yards,
but the Panthers only gave up two ninety two for
the whole game. It doesn't matter what way they got
it on the ground or in the air. You hold
a team under three hundred yards, that's that good. That's fantastic.
So the defense keeping the scores in the yardage reasonable
gives the offense an opportunity.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
To It was no explosive plays, as coach and mencent
and that was one of the keys. The offense was
able to maintain possession of the ball. I mean thirty
thirty three, thirty four minutes with that whatever was that's incredible.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
But I thought, this is to you and niece.
Speaker 5 (12:49):
I thought that when Bryce had the ball coming down
the very last I was like, I was confident he
was gonna go ahead and we all go ahead and score.
All that Bryce is about to drive and score. I
never felt that way to beginning of the season. No,
I feel that way right now. That ball in Bright's hand,
He's gonna go down in his score. And that was
a great feeling to have knowing that we had a
(13:11):
chance because Bryce was at the hell.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
You know, we sit next to Jake on a lot
of Sundays, and he engineered that same feeling amongst his
teammates and the fans when he had the ball late.
Speaker 6 (13:22):
Bryce has some of that, and that's that's the secret sauce.
That's the magic, because quarterback's different. It's different than being
a linebacker, being a tight end or whatever. It's like,
the ball's in your hands. You got to be the
captain of the ship. You get coached all week, you
get coached from the sidelines, but you're out there on
the field and that's it's on you. Now, balls in
your hands, are you gonna run it, you gonna throw it?
(13:42):
You're gonna throw it into the stands to avoid a sack.
And he's got to think of all this stuff and
split seconds they talk about two point seven seconds.
Speaker 7 (13:49):
So it's happening so fast, but it just.
Speaker 6 (13:51):
Looks like he's in control and the game has slowed
down and he's when he's running out of the pocket,
he's not running for survival. He's running with his eyes downfield,
trying to the third option on a route. So that
you see it though from our vantage.
Speaker 5 (14:04):
It looks like he looks like a really good, good
quarterback right now. You know, we talked a lot about
CJ Strout last year, and when you compare those two,
you're like, oh, man, CJ's a cut above, and now
we're seeing Bryce really come into his own and I'm going, dude,
you got some game you can play.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
His reputation out of Alabama was somebody who in his
best moments looked like a grand master reading a chessboard.
And last year, with the issues that the Panthers had
due to injuries up front on the offensive line, lack
of playmakers in the past catching game, he had to
(14:42):
be playing speed chess and was unable to do so.
And then you get into some bad habits, you make
some bad moves, all of a sudden checkmate. Right he's
now playing speed chess, and you can tell he's ahead.
The anticipatory things that we all heard about, you're seeing
it to fruition. And this is three weeks in a
(15:02):
row where he has stacked evidence against what could end
up being three playoff teams, certainly two in Tampa. Right
now leads the NFC South. I go back to what
the three of us talked about in the preseason and
going into Week one. If you walk away from this
twenty twenty four season and you say that's the guy
(15:23):
and you have the quarterback, everything else really is irrelevant.
Record is irrelevant, All that stuff is irrelevant. You have
the guy at the most important position, and oh, by
the way, you have him on a rookie deal for
three more years.
Speaker 6 (15:36):
It all add coach to that. I mean, we've been
looking for a new coach here too. So you got
your coach and your quarterback. Now you can start focusing
on the things that defensively need to be shored up,
maybe with another edge rush or another corner. Obviously we're
gonna be in the running back market to some degree.
Now in this offseason, we're talking about, you know, what's
the future at wide receiver looking like. So now you
can really start, you know, going after some other things.
(15:57):
They plug the interior offensive line with some stuff. Brown
comes back next year. Gives you a chance to move
off of some of these kind of recurring issues they've
been going after.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
You know.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
And here's the one thing I like, and let me
just be a defensive back. One thing that Bryce is
doing extremely well is that he's anticipating the break and
throwing the ball before the receiver makes his break.
Speaker 7 (16:18):
That is huge.
Speaker 5 (16:20):
If you're late off that that's an interception. But when
you're spot on, you're throwing guys open. And I've seen
that on the seventh route on a corner Ross. I've
seen that on a comeback rouse. I'm like, Bryce, you're
throwing guys open. I've seen it on the deep end
of Feeling coming across the middle. Thing that's making his break,
the balls already in the air, and when Fling makes
(16:41):
his break, boom, he's right there, hitting right in the mouth.
I'm like, dude, you've seen it with Loget get right
in the mouth a whole bunch of times. So what
I'm saying is that's what good quarterbacks do. They throw
the ball before you make your break because they gonna
anticipate where you would be at. And he's doing that
really well.
Speaker 8 (16:59):
Now, Yeah, he's done.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
And he's done it with Deontay Johnson, who was supposed
to be his number one traded weeks ago. He's done
it with Jalen Kocher, who had been coming on he hurt.
He's done it with Adam Thielen, who was injured for
a chunk of the season only back for a couple
of weeks here, so we're starting to see some real
positives with the quarterback position. We have more here on
Panther Talk. Jim's interview with Frank Garcia. Adam Amin, who
(17:22):
had the national call for Fox yesterday for Panthers Eagles,
will join us as well. Panther Talk presented by Bosh
Power Tools here on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh Power.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Tools and a Shrop Jim Zochie, Eugen Robinson. Panther Talk
rolls on. We had Dave Canalison in the first segment.
This is a team, listen. We've watched it grow, We've
watched it get better. This team is better. It's playing
a fun brand of football right now. They're doing it
with some significant injuries on defense. Derek Brown, Shaq Thompson.
(18:00):
It's been that way for a while. I think you
can feel real confident about where this thing is headed.
I think you have to go back to the offseason.
There were a lot of folks who said, well, why
would you promote Dan Morgan when he was part of
the old regime. Dan Morgan nailed this draft class in
large part probably found a half dozen starters from this
(18:22):
draft class that was the right higher give ownership credit there.
Dan had his relationship with Dave Canalis going way back,
made the case for Dave Canalis that looks to be
the guy who helped turn around Bryce Young and you
got the coach, you got the quarterback. Jim to what
you said in the last segment, you seem to have
alignment with the front office. They know what they want
(18:42):
this team to look like. Yes, three to ten. The record, okay,
it kind of is what it is. But from where
this team was a year ago and where this team
was frankly after two weeks into this season, even though
they're out of playoff contention, they've been eliminated these last
four games here, I think it's got a chance to
(19:04):
be a real springboard into twenty twenty five, where with
another draft class and free agency, the Panthers will have
a chance to make noise.
Speaker 6 (19:15):
And we kept it I think minimal during the broadcast
about the Rocky references, but it's like the end of
Rocky one where he loses and Apollo says it will
be no rematch.
Speaker 7 (19:24):
So I think Philadelphia.
Speaker 6 (19:29):
I think Philadelphia is Apollo and they're like, you know,
they were the heavy favorites, and I think at the
end of that fifteen rounder they were just.
Speaker 7 (19:36):
Like, we don't want I don't want to do that again.
Speaker 8 (19:38):
Because that makes Dallas Spider Rico.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
I guess it does. It could be. It could be.
Speaker 8 (19:46):
Panthers are favored this week.
Speaker 7 (19:48):
You know, you know what Dallas has to play tonight
on a short week.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
They got what Cooper Rushes the quarterback, So you got
Cooper in disarray. And I think the way that we're playing,
I think that anybody would be afraid of the play
the Carolina Panthers because it might get to coach fart
because they're a lot better than what you think.
Speaker 8 (20:08):
They are a lot a lot better what you think.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
And you know, one of the things I thought that
was interesting, I went back today and started reading the
comments from Philadelphia and a lot of players. Darius Slay
after the game said, it's a tough football team.
Speaker 8 (20:22):
Coaches on the Philadelphia.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
Side a lot of respect for what the Panthers have
been able to do. It's no longer the punchline now.
Having said that, you still have to win in the
margins because your margin for error is slim, and we'd
be remiss if we didn't talk about xavierly Get the
kid is super likable. Right if he turns into a
good player here in Carolina, the fans.
Speaker 8 (20:45):
Will love him.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
They love him already. The dollar bill celebration, the drawl,
incredibly endearing if you're around him at practice, if you
get a chance to talk to him. But these last
five weeks the Saints game had a reception along the
side line, should have been a catch. dB just rips
it away from him. Interception almost costs Caroline of the game.
(21:06):
Against Kansas City Wide open seen it. Bryce Young makes
an incredible throw, It just goes through his.
Speaker 8 (21:13):
Hands and then uh.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
This past week against Philadelphia had some crucial drops, including
the late one, and.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
He was targeted eight times in that game. He was
targeted eight times, and he had what maybe came up
with two catches and had the other drop. What drops,
but he was targeted and I get Coach Canal said,
we're gonna go right back to you. But let me
just say this, as a player, it messes what you had.
When you don't catch the ball is messing with your head. Now,
(21:39):
all the defensive back when he goes out.
Speaker 4 (21:41):
There to mind. Oh man, you can't even catch. You can't.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
He's gonna be getting They're gonna talk, they're gonna let
him have it.
Speaker 6 (21:48):
You never did though, Oh I know you mean corners,
not safeties, right, Yeah, the corners.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
They're gonna let him have it. Oh man, you a liability.
They're gonna he's gonna get the business. He's getting the
business beef, he's gonna get the busines. And so from
that standpoint, how do you shut them up? You got
to catch the rock?
Speaker 4 (22:03):
How do you do that?
Speaker 5 (22:04):
Go back to the drawing board. Catch one hundred passes
the day, two hundred past the day, after work, just
catch the ball one hand, two, do all the stuff
that you would normally do, but get in that, get
that work in so that you're not thinking about, Oh,
I gotta kiss the ball.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
I gotta kiss the ball.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
No, Because Jim, the positives are clearly he's a physical player.
He's six three, two thirty dangerous with the ball in
his hands, and he's shown the ability to consistently get open.
Speaker 6 (22:30):
And all I know, just from a football player standpoint.
In September, everybody who's ready to just say Bryce Young
is a washout and you know, I think Legett deserves
the same thing. Oh as far, it's like, this is
his rookie years, is not even his second year. So yeah,
it's a it's a horrible circumstance. It's a spotlight moment
that the game could be won by you simply doing
your job and catching the ball.
Speaker 7 (22:50):
It's an awful thing. Grow from it, learn from it, mature.
Speaker 6 (22:55):
This is the highest level. There's no it's not you
go down like the transfer port. You can't transfer down
to a lower program.
Speaker 7 (23:01):
So this is it. You're gonna make it or you're not.
But to just keep after it.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
And and like you said, all the all the tools,
all the things are there.
Speaker 7 (23:08):
So hopefully it comes together for him.
Speaker 5 (23:10):
Now you keep making a reference to Dan Morgan, and
I love it because I think Dan Morgan has hit
on something. I mean, his draft class, he got some
guys who was balling for him right, But I can't
wait to see what he does next year.
Speaker 4 (23:22):
Draft class.
Speaker 5 (23:23):
With the defense, Dan Morgan was one of the most
ferocious linebackers in the business. He would knock you in
the next week.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
He was.
Speaker 5 (23:30):
I mean, he's head, he's academic, but he was so
ferocious and he took on this character that hey, I'm
about to bust you up. You got beasts, and you
got Luke Keikley, you got you got a lot of
linebackers that'd yeahs who's been like the guys here and
Dan Morgan is one of those guys.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
I can't wait to see what type of dogs he get.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
On that defense is coming up again, you know, leaguet,
I still think it's gonna be a pretty good player
in this league. You hope Brooks can be okay, but
you look at the rest of the draft class, Trevin Wallace,
you found a starter at linebacker, J T. Sanders, a
pass catching tight end who's the real deal. Shaw Smith
Wade has a great chance to be here starting nickel
next year. And then you're throw in guys like Jalen
(24:11):
Cocher and Demani Richards, and not to mention Jaden Crummeny,
who he saw for the first time this past weekend.
Will see more of him, I assumed the last four games.
And then the seventh round pick, Michael Barrett, he was
able to turn that into his starting cornerback in Mike Jack.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (24:28):
I'll tell you what, man, I I'm excited about the
young guys and how they'd been balling out and how
they'd been playing and Richison, I think he's going to
be a beast too, by the way.
Speaker 1 (24:36):

Speaker 6 (24:48):
Like so many former Carolina Panthers, Frank Garcia has continued
to make the Charlotte area his home. Today we visit
with one of the original members of the Carolina Panthers
first ever draft class, reliving the stays down at l
I'm saying in the original days under Don Capers with Frank.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
Garcia, thirty seasons of Panther football a celebration of the players, coaches,
and other key figures who've contributed to the organizational success.
Speaker 6 (25:17):
He's part of that original nineteen ninety five Carolina Panthers
football team played here for a couple of years as
part of his pro career that began as a college
start at the University of Washington.
Speaker 7 (25:27):
Growing up in.
Speaker 6 (25:27):
Phoenix, Frank Garcia one of the big guys on the
offensive line from the early days of Panthers football.
Speaker 7 (25:33):
You're like a lot of players.
Speaker 6 (25:35):
I mean, I mean, I don't know if we might
be in the hundreds by now, Guys that spent some
part of their career here and decided they're going to
make this the place they raised their families and stick around.
What about Charlotte in the Carolina as a particular has
been attractive for you to stick around all these many years?
Speaker 9 (25:50):
Well, I was very fortunate, you know, when I was,
you know, first here with the Panthers to kind of
get mentored by John Casey, and he gave me a
good piece of advice is that, you know, this is
of all the league, You're going to maybe travel here
and there, but always find a place you can call home.
And that's what we decided to make Charlotte. And it
was an easy decision. The community, the schools, the activities,
(26:14):
the safeness. It's just a great lifestyle and a great
place to raise a family. And you know, we found
ourselves loving it and just continue to grow here and
and immerse ourselves into the community and you know, doing
a bunch of different things, coaching high school football, running restaurants,
just doing radio, just being a part of the community.
(26:34):
It has been something that's been important to me and
we've been blessed to be able to do that for
many years.
Speaker 6 (26:40):
Here you live at your friends with these guys. There
are a lot of guys that are like you. They
find success after football, and then some who kind of
get lost or don't really find exactly what they love
to do. But you just mentioned a couple of passions.
If you was doing radio, being in the restaurant industry,
coaching high school football, what's post football been like as
far as having those successes you've had outside of the
football field.
Speaker 9 (27:00):
In the challenge initially, and I understand those those those
people's the other guys that have played this this game
and made a career out of it. That post part
of what you do afterwards. And it's a challenge because
a lot of times you base your identity and what
you do as a young kid and you really don't understand,
you know, the purpose. You don't do that for a
(27:20):
long time. It might be ten years if you're lucky,
if you're really lucky, it might be ten years. But
you have the rest of your life to live. So
finding that next passion is something that it took a
little while. I played a lot of golf. I was
lost a little bit when I was done, but fortunate,
I surrounded myself with good people and I got into
the radio industry and started my own show, and I
(27:43):
had did that for several years, and you know then
you know, you decided once that was over, to you know,
always coach high school football. But it's a challenge. It's
a challenge, and you know that's turned into even you know,
running restaurants and owning restaurants with a good partner that
I made, Joe Moss, who owns several car dealerships here
in the area. So just surrounding yourself with good people
(28:06):
and you know, finding your way through and you know,
having a passion for what you're doing and looking for
that next challenge.
Speaker 6 (28:13):
When you were growing up on the other side of
the country in the Phoenix, Arizona area, what was what
was maybe that person for you or those experiences like
that you recall going through the high school years before
you went off to Washington for college that kind of
helped form you as as a high school football player.
Speaker 9 (28:29):
Well, I was a big wrestler back then, and you
know I also played football, and you know I had
a coach named Coach Buck Hall. You know, back in Arizona,
kind of fitting for the state that we were in.
But he wore a big belt buckle, and you know,
I remember one day at practice. You know, I thought
I was smart and I had all the answers, and
I decided to pop off to him, and back then
(28:50):
it wasn't as politically correct as it is now. He
took a clipboard and jammed at about three and a
half four inches into my sternum and told me, if
I wanted to coach the F and team, here you
coach the F and team. I think I learned my
lesson right then and there that I overstepped, and my
dad did a good job raising us. And you know,
I think nowadays there might be a lawsuit, but back
(29:12):
then I went and apologized for overstepping after the practice
and learned my place. But g had a big impact
on my life, and you know, teaching me values and
things like that. We had a great high school program,
you know, with a lot of NFL athletes, Darren Woodson
Fleepe Sparks to mention a couple that had long careers
for the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants, and
(29:33):
you know, we had a really good team. But you know,
he was a big part of my life and I
remember a lot of the things he instilled in me,
and you know, sort of my dad as as a
kid growing up. He was there for us and you know,
really gave us a lot of our values that we
have today.

Any Shrop, Jimzoki, Eugene Robinson here on Panther Talk Carolina
taking on the Dallas Cowboys this coming weekend, Cowboys in
Action Tonight against the Bengals, and Jim any interest in
the Simpsons version of that game.
Speaker 6 (30:31):
I didn't even know this was happening until earlier today
because once you put on the TV, you can't get
away from it. And to me, it's just like I
didn't even know, Eugene, that was still a show. I
thought it was like the syndication. I thought they'd run out.
I really didn't know it was still going on. It's
still show, Yeah, still a around. I mean, they never
age because they're cartoon characters. But it's just like I
wasn't even aware that people still watch the Simpsons.
Speaker 7 (30:53):
So yeah, no, not for me.
Speaker 8 (30:55):
Not for you.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
I am interested to see, you know, what Dallas does
against a pretty good offense in Cincinnati. Bengals obviously can't
play defense. But you start to look ahead to Week fifteen,
Carolina one expected to win that game. Injuries for Dallas
have been real. Dak Prescott is out, Zach Martin's out,
may have played his last game as a cowboy, a
guy who in his prime, which was what up until
(31:18):
last year, best right guard in the National Football League.
And you know, people talk about the Panthers and their
struggles against the run. Dallas is thirty first out of
thirty two against the run. It's a game where Tuba
can eat.
Speaker 5 (31:30):
One hundred and forty seven yards. They've giving up and
you're right, Tuba can eat. And on the flip side,
they only gaining eighty five eighty six yards per game rushing.
So this is the thing, I think that Tuba could
actually go ahead and eat and and up.
Speaker 4 (31:42):
I'm looking for two.
Speaker 5 (31:43):
But if you have a good, good, solid game, I
think for canalist, you got to run the ball to
set up Bryce. That's what I believe, and and the
way we run is really well.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
All right, it's time for us to bring in good
friend of mine, one of the best broadcasters in the business.
He is a play by play announcer for Fox Sports,
Adam Amein. You hear him on Major League Baseball NFL,
and he had the call for the Panthers Eagles yesterday. Adam,
appreciate you coming on, and we'll jump right in. You
(32:15):
follow the NFL, You cover the league closely, you do
it from a national perspective. So how has the national
perspective on the Carolina Panthers changed from Week one to
now heading into week fifteen.
Speaker 10 (32:28):
I don't think it's always a good gauge, you know,
an accurate gauge to look at, you know, social media response.
I just I just happen to be on it, and
you just see like encouraging comments about the Panthers, which
is really refreshing because I think they deserve it with
the way they've played. And while that's not an accurate gauge,
I do think seeing how Bryce Young has progressed, how
(32:50):
the defense has comported itself against what I think are
pretty quality offensive opponents, especially the last handful of weeks,
to see how well some of the individual defensive guys
are playing, to see the effort of Chewba Harvard. A
thousand yard season is maybe not what it feels like
it was five ten, maybe even fifteen years ago, but
(33:10):
it's still I think, a really good barometer to judge
a running back and to judge an offensive line. I
think a lot of whatever narratives that we have a
tendency to lean into, and I know a lot of
us try to stay away from them, but we do
hear them, and we do see how they helped shape
the framework of the NFL. Whatever narratives I think we
came in with even a month and a half ago
(33:32):
about Carolina and kind of what the state of the
union has been the last couple of years, with you know,
how the draft has gone, and how you know the
Bear season has gone. And I say that living in Chicago,
that's constantly going to be interconnected with how the Panthers
success or failures go over a portion of time. I
just feel like the entire narrative has started to shift
about Carolina nationally and rightfully so. And this is what
(33:54):
you hope to see when you have new coaches, young players,
young team, organization trying to find its flitting. I think
these are all really positive sides over the last five weeks,
even going back maybe six or seven weeks, to try
to push forward for this organization.
Speaker 5 (34:08):
Right now, this is Eugene. Do you think the benching
of brushs Young was needed? And if so, what do
you think it has done for bruysh Young as we
see him now.
Speaker 10 (34:20):
I think if you just look at performance, you can
easily make a case to say that it was needed. Again,
I'm not in there on the human element of it
between a coach and a quarterback, and that relationship obviously
is so important and I imagine fairly delicate depending on
the two parties involved. And I think just performance wise,
you say, hey, this is a justifiable thing to do
(34:41):
to get a young quarterback, get him to maybe observe
some things. I don't know what the true pure intent
was other than to see if you can turn some
things around, But I think the consequences of it have
ended up being really fruitful for Bryce, and you hope
that's going to be the case when you have to
make tough decisions and have tough conversations like I imagine
(35:02):
Dave canalis Is had to have with Bryce, and I'm
sure Bryce doesn't love it. And he said, you know,
Dave told us as much. You know, it was our
It was my first time seeing Carolina this year. I
had him a couple of times last season and got
to see some good moments. We saw the win against
Atlanta when Chris Taber had taken over. We saw some
positive things late last year. But Bryce is a competitor,
and Dave said as much, like he wasn't happy when
(35:25):
we had to have that conversation and he got benched.
But what you hope young people do. And Bryce, in
my interactions with him, and I imagine your guys's dealings
with him, he comes off as a young man of
high character and you know, a really strong work ethic,
and it seems like he took those traits and applied
them to a tough situation like this and constantly, constantly
(35:46):
was on the sidelines. You guys know it better than
we do. But we see it on TV. We see
it with our with our cameras on our cruise, shots
of Bryce Young standing next to Andy Dalton while the
defense is out there and he's asking questions. Dave Canalis
and Andy Dalton are having a meeting. Bryce Young is
not too far away from that meeting and listening and
observing and hopefully absorbing knowledge. And when we chatted with
(36:10):
him the other day, it seemed like those were the
things that he tried to apply to a tough situation.
And you again, I don't want to assume that these
are the only reasons why he's finding success now, but
I think it's a combination of a lot of different things,
and that benching maybe was a spur, a catalyst for
some of those things to take place.
Speaker 6 (36:28):
And then Adams Jim Zochi after the game. Of course,
you know, Philadelphia has got this incredible record. They're eleven
and two, they've won nine in a row, and they
barely beat the Panthers. They're a great running team. But
more talk now about the passing game. There is that
a flaw for them heading into the postseason, that the
should a really good defensive run stop team get a
hold of them, that Philadelphia may not get to where
(36:50):
they want to go in the postseason.
Speaker 10 (36:52):
I mean, I think that's important to help neutralize them.
You can't make the pass game easy for a good
team like Philadelphia, and I don't think the Panthers made
it easy for them at all. We had several plays
that we called out where you know, whether Jalen Hurd
missus reeds or not, the coverage still has to be
there because Berts is a type of quarterback like you know,
you think of Kyler Murray and the things that he
does post snap out of the pocket, the positive plays
(37:15):
that he can make being off schedule. Jalen Hurts can
make positive plays off schedule with either his feet or
his arm, and you still have to get open to
allow Jalen Hurts to make those plays, and we called
it out multiple times. Sticky coverage. Jackson played great yesterday.
JC Horn played a physical game as he has oftentimes,
and I know he got hurt. Shaw Smith came in
and played some crucial snaps at corner. I thought the
(37:38):
coverage scheme and the execution were really good yesterday. So
I think to neutralize a team like Philadelphia, you have
to make sure your coverage is still sound, and it
still might not be enough because the running game is
that good, that offensive line is at the elite level.
You know, one of the two or three best offensive
(37:59):
line the game, and you combine that with one of
the as of right now two or three best running
backs in the game. It may not be enough, but
you have to at least take an element of their
offense away, and that is being able to get explosive
plays in the passing game, which I think Caroline did
an excellent job of.
Speaker 4 (38:14):
You.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
Yeah, it was a strong effort by the Panthers. They
come up a little short and Adam always appreciate visiting
with you. Great seeing you this weekend, and hopefully we
cross paths again over these last four weeks.
Speaker 10 (38:29):
Looking forward to my friend. Thanks guys.
Speaker 1 (38:31):
All right, Adam Aman from Fox Sports joining us. You
have the call for Carolina Philadelphia yesterday. We will wrap
things up on Panther Talk on the other side. It
is presented by Bosh power Tools. You're listening to the
Carolina Panthers radio network.
Speaker 2 (38:46):
This is Panther Talk. Please send it by Bosh power Tools.
Speaker 1 (38:52):
In each Jim Eugene to wrap things up here on
Panther Talk. Carolina gets Dallas at home this weekend, and
Eugene with a team that has been so close pushing
three now first place teams to the brink over these
past few weeks, you get a Dallas team in with
(39:14):
injuries up front, Dak Prescott out for the season, backup
quarterback Michael Parsons at times has been a malcontent. Ceedee
Lamb has complained how about the lighting at Jerry World.
Mike McCarthy his job has been openly talked about in
national circles. This kind of feels like a game where hey,
(39:37):
all right, now you're punching down in white class, so
to speak, go win.
Speaker 8 (39:41):
This by two touchdowns.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
Here it is.
Speaker 5 (39:45):
Dallas is in disarray, and because they are in disarray,
this is prime for the Carolina Panthers to go ahead
and play well and.
Speaker 4 (39:52):
Win a game.
Speaker 5 (39:53):
But beyond that, when we look at the Carolina Panthers
and how well they played the last five six weeks,
they're playing great ball, right and I can't say that
about Dallas is playing great ball like that. They're playing
great ball. And so as Dallas Cowboys coming there. I
was talking to a friend who happens to be a
Dallas fan. I say, hey, they're not a friend this week.
I said, y'all better watch out. I said, yeah, I
(40:15):
know that's your root for Dallas and all this is great,
I said, but you better watch out because the Carolina
Panthers that you thought that you going to play in
the beginning of the season and not the Carolina Panthers
that you see right now. And I'm telling you Bryce
ain't no Joe, and so you better watch out. I
got the Panther that's winning by ten thirteen points, all right.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
I like to saund On.
Speaker 6 (40:35):
That I'm telling you, and it's secondary to the fact
that you just want to win the game. But we
talked about the news that would have been stirred by
the Panthers beating the Eagles because of the nature that
they're the Dallas Cowboys. If the Panthers do that, I mean,
we get coaches fired, we get your backs benched. So
if it happens, I mean, that'll be That'll be all
that they'll be talking about.
Speaker 7 (40:52):
An A and step.
Speaker 6 (40:54):
Bayless, It's all that be talking about. Colin Coward. Is
they all gonna be talking about Monday? So I would
love to set that in motion and see all that
come to fruition.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
What will happen is a lot of people who have
not watched the Panthers, especially these last five weeks.
Speaker 7 (41:06):
Colin Coward, other people I just mentioned.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
They'll have very opinionated takes on the result of that game,
and it will be wrong to Dallas Cowboy, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (41:15):
But they will be wrong.
Speaker 8 (41:16):
They don't care about it.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
I know you're right, but they will be wrong anyway.
How much it's not who's right or wrong. Eugene who
screams loudest, Well guess what he who yells wins.
Speaker 4 (41:27):
Well, we're gonna yell this week, and we're gonna win.
Speaker 1 (41:30):
I have the TV on at my house sometimes and
my wife will yell at me. Are you are you
watching that show again where they're yelling about sports.
Speaker 7 (41:37):
Yes, I am.
