Speaker 1 (00:00):
The following is an exclusive presentation of the Carolina Panthers
and the National Football League.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Panther Tell and they'irtell and they're toll.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh Power Tools on
the Carolina Panthers Radio network.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
I just want to see us take another step, another
step in terms of taking care of the ball, those
critical variables and critical situations, see the growth that we want.
So we've had a week to kind of look at
those things and hone some things in systematically from our
core and then maybe add a couple of wrinkles, you know,
as we go forward.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
And now, along with Jim Zoki and Eugene Robinson, here's
a Niche Shroff with Panther Talk live from the Panthers
broadcast facility at Bank of America Stadium.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
We are back from the bye week. The Panthers get
ready for the two time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas
City Chiefs on Sunday. Possible that Taylor Swift makes the
trip to Charlotte as well. That remains to be seen.
But big game for Carolina coming off wins against the
Giants and the Saints had the win in Munich, had

(01:10):
a week to rest up, and let's bring in the
head coach of the Carolina Panthers, Dave Canalis. Dave, before
we get started with football. Most interesting thing that you
did during the bye week.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Oh, there's a lot for kids. So we had a
great week. But on Saturday, my son Ben and I
were part of All Pro Dad, which was at the stadium.
Was a great event and just advocating you know, mentors, dads,
people just in their kids' lives and we were able

(01:44):
to be a part of that event Saturday, and then
Sunday we were we were in the vault actually, and
the kids were painting their shoes as a part of
a project to h to promote individuality through art, and
so it was a fun. All the kids were able
to go and paint their own shoes and just learn

(02:04):
about you know, just express themselves in a unique ways.
So there were some really cool stuff that happened on
the buy.

Speaker 4 (02:09):
Oh very nat from a football standpoint. Coach you mentioned
before the bye Hey, we're gonna go look at everything.
We're gonna self scout. Were there any truths that you
felt were revealed when you kind of went back and
watched your own film in terms of what you felt
like you do well and where uh you see areas
of improvement after the buye.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
Yeah, just I was excited to just you know, sit
down with the Jarrow with Brad Tracy and you know,
starting on the defensive side, to see the growth, to
see our system and our calls just being played well,
the emphasis on the run game and seeing the improvement there,
playing together, playing team football, fitting things right, the communication

(02:51):
on the back end, all the things that we're seeing
progress in. You know, we're just excited to see that
and continue to try to off of that and offensively,
you know, to see the consistency in the run game.
But then also just see you know, learning the chemistry,
learning each other, you know, with the skilled players, with
Bryce being in there, the offensive line, you know, continuing

(03:12):
to do a good job in past protection. So see
some of those things come to life and really start
to feel a personality. And then are you know, from
a special team standpoint, you know, the highlight's be in
our coverage units and you know, just a couple of
war daddies, you know, streaming down the field and Sam
Franklin and Lonnie Johnson, Felipe Franks, John Radigan, you know,

(03:33):
I can go on and on with with the guys
that have been contributing in those units, but they bring
a lot of energy, a lot of juice, and a
lot of personality for what we want Panthers football to
look like.

Speaker 5 (03:42):
Coach, I want to stay on the same line of questioning,
is there a stat that you look at, oh, to
determine how much you're getting better at those positions?

Speaker 2 (03:52):
I e. Something like third down percentage, et cetera.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, third down percentage has not been where we wanted to,
but our defense did have a better day against the
Giants there, but we've been offensively just kind of hovering
right around that forty percent range. And really, Eugene like that,
in terms of third and fourth down, it's like, it's
the third and fourth and manageable, you know, the sixth
or less that's the world. That's the world where you've
got to be up, you know, in the fifty percent

(04:18):
or better. And that's the part that we got to
continue to improve upon. Seven seven, third and seven plus
fourth and seven plus those are going to be difficult
downs to make, and you'll make a few. But when
we have when we're playing on schedule, playing complimentary football,
we have to take advantage offensively and defensively. We've got
to you know, continue to get the team off the
field so we can play that balance football that we want.

Speaker 6 (04:39):
And coach, being this first year with it being your
program here, what does it mean the value of winning.
It's possible to win and not play well, as possible
to lose and yet play well, but to play better
football while also winning. What what does that do for like
just the morale and the culture of what you're trying
to establish here.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah, it's great, Jim, And it's it's about trusting the process.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
You know.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
It's it's process over results, and we cannot sacrifice today
short term wins, short term victories for the long haul
of finding our systems, playing our football well and improving
in the critical areas. And so you know, that's the
discipline that it takes. And for the wins to come

(05:24):
while our football is improving and we're doing better in
these in these areas is great because we can point
directly to it. You know, to your point, sometimes you
win a game but you didn't play well. Sometimes you
lose a game and you played really well. So it's
when it all comes together. It just empowers the staff,
it empowers the players to see, this is our kind
of football. We can do this if we continue to

(05:46):
grow in these different areas.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Dave, what made you decide to stay with Bryce Young?

Speaker 3 (05:53):
It's the progress, It's the it's the energy, it's the
finish and ultimately the winning right. And so as he
continues to do those things, and you know, watching him
play confidently and watching the offense final rhythm, you know,
in a couple of those really nice drives all the

(06:13):
way down into the red zone, to see all the phases,
the first second down, the third downs hit, you know,
the the red zone opportunities come alive. It's like, you know,
he continues to put himself in a great position to
help the team. And so you know the decision was was,
you know, right in line with those things happening.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
And Coach, I know you've been talking about Bryce, but
I think a lot particularly is the officsive line. I
think the blocking of the officeive line the last couple
of games has been stellar. Uh and it's evidence because
your running back is running. So what we continue to
see more of Cuba and talk to me a little
bit about the office line and the continuity that you

(06:54):
have there.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Absolutely. I think I think Bryce and Cuba would be
the first ones to tell you that it all starts
up front, and you know, Damien and Robert, you know,
being in there with three different centers now yea, and
to see that, to see the success happen, you know,
and to see the preparation you know, from the coaches
that we've talked about here with with Harold Goodwin, Joe

(07:17):
Gilbert and Khali Tikuevo, who does who works you know
a lot with the centers, and to see those guys
step in there and still be able to get the
runs targeted properly, to get the protections started out, and
then for Brady Christiansen to pop out and play tackle
for us and and do a great job there. So
it all starts up front, and then the chemistry from there,

(07:38):
you know, with with Bryce learning his players, learning, Jalen
Coker learning Xavier look at you know, Jatavian Sanders getting
his first touchdown, you know, and and then of course
all of that, you know, just once those players get started.
But then Cuba finishing it with the with the style
and the attitude that he runs with is exactly what
we're looking for for Panthers football.

Speaker 6 (07:59):
It's been up a year since Jeffan Brooks has played
in a football game, and you've got to watch this rehab,
in this process since you got here in the spring,
as far as the draft, and then from that point
on again, we'll see how really has on Sunday. But
how excited are you for that opportunity for him to
get back out there a year later and for everyone
to kind of see what a special football player in
person he is.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
I'm so excited for JB. All the hard work, all
the challenges, you know, to continue to work to take
what was prescribed for him to get himself back to
an opportunity where he can help us. I'm so excited
for just to see him be able to do what
he loves to do, which is run that football and
carry it. So again, I fully anticipate that he will

(08:43):
be up this week again. We have a couple more
practices to get him out there go full speed. We'll
pad up again and just to just to create that confidence,
you know, and because I want to make sure that
he's put into the best situation possible.

Speaker 4 (08:57):
Dave, when you turn on the tape and watch Cans City,
I know, we usually talk about the Chiefs and their offense,
but they've been very still around defense this season, especially
with Chris Jones in the trenches. Is there anything that
you guys can take from what you were able to
do against Dexter Lawrence that again potentially translates against Kansas

(09:19):
City when with Jones.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
It all starts off with the fundamentals. It all starts
off with making sure that we're hitting our combos properly,
that we're you know, right on the snap count, you know,
so that we can get the jump on the thing
and get the play started.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
You know.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
So it all starts there and the players are aware
of that, you know. And and it was great, you know,
to go against Dexter Lawrence. And again I got to
go back to like, these are guys that had to
block Derek Brown all camp, you know, and that will
prepare you mentally, that will give you confidence, you know,
to know that you can play against anybody. You can
play against great player like Derek Brown. So you know,

(09:57):
here we go again. We got I mean every week,
you know, some there there's one or two players up
front that that create challenges of their own. And so
the offense is a lot to be ready for this
one too.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Well.

Speaker 5 (10:07):
Typically we know that Kelsey is that guy on offense
with Kennessey, but now a new guy in the mix,
DeAndre Hopkins, who was like one, I think one of
my favorite players of a guy who's just he adds
so much. So what does he add to now the
Kansas City achieves that you have to be aware of coach.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
He's got great range and so I think you know,
even even in a in a really well covered route,
you know, hop finds a way to his hands on
the ball, so you have to battle all the way
to the ground. You really got a battle to try
to get the ball out. But he creates some challenges there.

Speaker 6 (10:42):
And that in terms of defenders, this is kind of
the Jonathan Brooks of the defense.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
As far as.

Speaker 6 (10:46):
Coming back, DJ wanham as right, not that you didn't
know what kind of player you got this offseason, but
for his first quarter of his first game, I mean,
just to jump in without being in game reps. How
surprising was it that the impact was felt immediately?

Speaker 3 (11:01):
I guess the pleasant surprise was the sure the production,
but also just just just what we kind of heard
about the guy, just the player himself. The way that
he prepares, the way that he his attitude is on
game day, his professionalism, He's got a lot of toughness
to him. And I thought that was just a great addition,

(11:22):
you know to a group that's coming together to find
a way to play good defensive ball. So that part
really was the the you know, pleasant surprise for me
is just to see the magnetism and just the guy
and coach.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
I like the way our secondary is playing, particularly those corners,
Jack and Horn.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
I think is a great combination which you have out there. Coach.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
I appreciate you Gane. Yeah, these guys, you know, they
take they make the most of their opportunities. And again
like two guys that have have had a little bit
of familiarity with the system, but being able to work together,
you know, in that back half with those safeties, and
it was great to get Jordan Fuller back out there,
you know, just communicating, you know, making sure that everything's
set up, you know, the right way formationally with the

(12:04):
different calls. So I love the way that the group
is coming together.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Dave.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
We're all looking forward to it this weekend. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Hey, thanks a lot.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
Dave Canalis, head coach of the Carolina Panthers, Jim, you
weren't here last Monday. Eugene and I talked about it
a little bit leaving Germany, leaving Munich, with the Panthers
winning that game, and then on the flight back, you
got a lot of time to think and digest and
you get the bye week. There was a feeling that

(12:35):
something had turned. And again, progress isn't always linear. The
Panthers have the third hardest schedule over the next seven
games in the entire NFL. But it felt like, all right,
you're starting to see that bass layer, which we've talked
about with the rookie class, they're getting healthier. This is
probably about as healthy as they've been in a long time.

(12:57):
Still no Derek Brown, still no Shaq Thompson, both out
for the year. But it almost feels like, Okay, you've
kind of turned the page and maybe you're on to
chapter two now and you can start really writing this
thing now.

Speaker 6 (13:08):
Yeah, and it's hard to It's kind of back to
my first question with coach. It's hard to implement all
the things when you don't have key members personnel wise,
there's a reason guys get paid a lot of money,
like Derek Brown in this league. Otherwise we would just
get you know, fifty three next men up and save
a lot of money. Yeah, so it matters to have
quality football players that know how to play well. Also

(13:29):
drafting young guys and giving them the time that it
takes the mature eugene into being football players at this level,
not just college stars.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
But it matters.

Speaker 6 (13:36):
So you're not gonna get Derek Brown back or Shaq
Thompson back this year, but in the meanwhile, while you're developing,
it does better to have DJ want them out there.
It does better that Adam Thielen's coming back this week.
There's a reason they're here.

Speaker 5 (13:47):
I like the way we look, and I like those
young guys. They are producing, and there's something we should write.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
Confidence can be fleeting, but it's also real, and in
this age where we try to quantify everything, I think
you can qualify this. There's a different vibe around this
franchise right now. I know it's two wins. I know
the Saints fired their coach. I know the Giants bench
their quarterback. I'm not dismissing the context around the state

(14:17):
of those two teams, But at the same time, nobody
was feeling bad for the Panthers when they had all
the injuries and the entire front seven was.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Patrol.

Speaker 6 (14:27):
Sorry for you all, that's right. I do like, by
the way, Danny Jones is a great kid. I mean,
he's from Charlotte, Charlotte, so I hate that. But he's
had opportunities. And it's funny we talked during the break
there were things that happened in that game. They're out
of his control. It's hard to bench a winning team.
So if they'd won that game, there were some things
he did that they could have won the game with that,
but things happened outside of his control too. So it's

(14:48):
kind of the fickleness of the game. And we've seen Hey,
we're watching right, Sam, Darnold, Baker Mayfield. I mean, guys,
guys get second, third, fourth chances.

Speaker 5 (14:54):
This mick your own breaks right here. And we've been
making some breaks with these young.

Speaker 4 (14:58):
Giants, and another opportunity for Rice Young as well. This
will be his fourth start since re entering the starting lineup.
We'll be back with more Panther Talk presented by Bosh
power Tools on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh power Tools and a.

Speaker 4 (15:19):
Shroff, Jim Zochi, Eugene Robinson back here on Panther Talk.
We got a chat with Bill Razinski coming up, and
also Michael Leig Junior will join us to talk about
the potential intersection of football and Taylor Swift with which
I know people just are dying here. But the Kansas
City Chiefs in town on Sunday. Two time defending Super

(15:41):
Bowl champion. They've played in four of the last five
Super Bowls, six straight conference championships, basically every game since
Mahomes has been a starting quarterback, every year they've made
it to the conference championship. You can make the case
this is the weakest Kansas City team in the Mahomes era,

(16:01):
despite the nine to one record. I'm just gonna run
you through the evidence. Week one against Baltimore, Ravens had
a game tying touchdown on the final play overturned by
replay escape. Against Cincinnati fourth down pass interference call on
the bang of Dpi Harrison, Butker kicks a fifty one
yardfield goal and the Chiefs win. The Falcons had a

(16:25):
fourth and one from the Kansas City thirteen with less
than a minute to go. They get stopped Chiefs win
the game against the Chargers. Chiefs needed a game winning
score in the fourth quarter. It took overtime to beat
the Bucks and a block field goal to beat Denver.

(16:46):
They lose to Buffalo this past weekend. The Bills beat
them and it was clean. But Jim, this is a
team where, yeah, nine and one the record looks impressive.
The way they've won has not looked as impressive as
these Chiefs teams have looked in the past.

Speaker 6 (17:01):
Yeah, you kind of ran through the bulk of them,
but seven of the nine games were one possession games,
and many even closer as far as like you said,
one yard.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Here or play there.

Speaker 6 (17:09):
And now they don't have Harrison Butker, who's probably the
best kicker in the league. So that's a big weapon
to lose in terms of close games of what they
might be dealing with moving forward. And yet I hesitate
to say they seem to have what it takes in
the postseason. It's almost like they're doing just enough because
they can get by with load management and my homes
doesn't really have to run right now, and Kelsey doesn't

(17:31):
really have to catch twelve passes right now, but they
needed to, they could and so I feel like, not
that they're you know, that try to play close to
the best and have close games, Eugene, But I do
think if these are playoff games, we probably would see
a different as we talk about preseason to regular season,
that regular season the postseason, we would see a different
energy and probably aggressiveness.

Speaker 4 (17:51):
Eugene. You played on veteran teams. Is the light switch reel?

Speaker 2 (17:55):
The light switch is real, you turn it all. The
light switch is real.

Speaker 5 (17:59):
I mean, even as we in Green Bay and we
were going into the playoffs, it just seemed to be
a different energy, you know. And even though we were
laughing and joking as we got there, once we stepped
on the field, man, we were trying to go ahead
and take people's heads off. We were getting that and
then we were like, hey, every play counts. You can't
give a team an opportunity. Look see, I think it

(18:21):
caught up with Kansas City the other day against Buffalo.
You can't give another a team that's really good, you
can't give them opportunity because if you're lacking at any point,
they will beat you. They'll find a way to beat you.
They just will. And so from that standpoint, I think
they've been getting away with the spider skin in their teeth.

(18:41):
But to your point, I think if they get to
the playoffs, they ramp it up.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
They get to it.

Speaker 5 (18:46):
And I think that has a lot to do with
Andy Reid too, because he's been there, he knows what
time it is, and he seems to be able to
get the best of his guys. I don't care if
Tyreek Hill leaves, it doesn't matter. He gets the best
out of his guy.

Speaker 4 (19:02):
The issue, though, is from a talent standpoint. Offensively, they've
got the best quarterback in the game, a guy who
is twenty nine. He's not even thirty and is already
in that all time conversation. Yes, However, again, with the
way roster construction works in the NFL, you pay the quarterback,

(19:22):
you pay Chris Jones, you're basically banking on Mahomes to
elevate everybody around him. And we saw this happen to
the Panthers. On defense, you get some injuries when you
don't have depth, you start to pay for it. Well,
their offense has been hit. Pachecko, the running back is out,
Hollywood Brown is out. Kelsey is on the wrong side
of thirty. Now Sky Moore, Rashi Rice both on ir

(19:45):
These are significant, significant injury and as good as Kelsey's
been Eugene, he's now what thirty six years old, is
thirty five? Thirty six years old at that point him
healthy for the playoffs, and you want him to be
that ten to twelve catch guy in the postseason. It
probably means you gotta monitor his workload a little bit

(20:08):
in the regular season.

Speaker 5 (20:09):
But you said something you said about the quarterback play
elevating everybody else. We've seen it with Brady. You never
knew Wes Welcome until you heard Brady. You know Edeman
wasn't to Brady. All those receivers who came out of
there Branch, all those guys you don't even know their
name because of Brady made him famous.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
Everybody wants to.

Speaker 5 (20:28):
Go to the Patriots at the time because of Brady.
Everybody wants to go to Kansas City because of Patrick Mahomes.
He's like Joe Montana. He's gonna make guys name, He's
gonna he's gonna elevate your name because he's gonna get
you the ball.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
All you gotta do is catch it. All you have
to do is.

Speaker 5 (20:43):
Catch the ball. He's gonna find a way to get
you that rock. And so from that standpoint, I hear
what you're saying. It doesn't matter that quarterback is that good.
And you can have a marginal athlete a marginal receiver,
and he can make a marginal receiver look great by
his ball policeman.

Speaker 6 (20:58):
And they made a you know, they made a a
structural change when they invested in defense overall. You mentioned
Chris Jones, but overall, they moved a lot of money
over to the defensive side so they wouldn't have to
score forty points to win. So that's two years in
the works now. So they did pay the price a
little bit in terms of all the offensive talent that
they could maybe put around him to make their defense better,

(21:18):
to make that side, you know, more competitive, and that's
worked for them, as they've shown the last two year.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
Getting de Hop.

Speaker 5 (21:23):
I think getting d Hop was a great move by
them because you can see that there's a report that's
starting to happen between Mahomes and d Hop. He's looking
for him and he's looking for him to be that
receiver that everybody knew who he was when he was
at Arizona where he.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
Played his cat was a beast.

Speaker 5 (21:39):
Everybody knew he was a beast, and he seems to
get that same renewed energy because he's playing with the
Cats City Chiefs.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
Yeah and again, this guy was a thousand yard receiver
just a year ago for a Titans team that had
quarterback issues, So he still showed a year ago he's
got it. It's gonna be a big test for the Panthers,
but should be fun at the two time defending Super
Bowl champions in town and an opportunity for this team,
for this franchise to make a loud statement if they

(22:06):
can hang with Kansas City. They're coming off two straight wins.
More Panther Talk presented by Bosh power Tools after this
on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (22:15):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh power Tools.

Speaker 6 (22:22):
He was and always will be the original voice of
the Carolina Panthers, Bill Rozinsky, who continues to do.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
NFL and of course PGA Tour Radio.

Speaker 6 (22:31):
We'll talk some football, we'll talk some golf, will talk
thirty years of Panthers football like we always do with
the great Bill Razinski coming up.

Speaker 1 (22:39):
Thirty seasons of Panther football a celebration of the players, coaches,
and other key figures who've contributed to the organizational success.

Speaker 6 (22:50):
All Right, our friend and longtime broadcast partner, Bill Razinski
joining us on this edition of the podcast, and you
hear him on PGA Tour Radio. You hear him on
US Media for NFL football play by plays on a
lot of college obviously through the years. Every now and
then he get to sign the Panthers game. This year,
you haven't had one, did you do he anticipate will
you have a Panther.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
Game this year?

Speaker 7 (23:11):
That would probably be a negative. I know late in
the year, the last couple of weeks they can move
some games Saturday, so who knows, but I would think
the way the team is going right now that that
will not happen. The last game I did was a
Monday night opener a year ago.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
What was that Week two?

Speaker 7 (23:28):
I think they played the Saints. It was like there
was like two early Monday night. Yeah, yeah, And that's
the last time I did a Panther game.

Speaker 6 (23:35):
I'm going to ask you too, because you were there
obviously the Super Bowl year and for many great seasons
that included playoffs and so forth. As you travel around
the league, when it's at its best. Where does the
Panthers crowd, where's the Panthers fan base land with what
you see around the NFL.

Speaker 7 (23:52):
Well, I think I think they've always been underrated. I
think if you go back to you know, my goodness,
our second year, you know, when this team was suddenly
you know, in ninety six, the new stadium opens and
we're a contender. We were undefeated at home, and as
that season went on, you know, we'd be on a

(24:13):
road trip and come back and land at the airport
and obviously this is before nine to eleven, where there'd
be you know, two or three hundred fans waiting to
greet the team, more people at the stadium as they
got in on a late on I used to say,
early on a Monday morning after a Sunday night game.
And then the season we went to the super Bowl,

(24:34):
and the seasons after that. I mean, this team was
pretty good during those Jake Dilom years. In fact, I
think their best season might have been the one where
the Arizona beat them in the playoffs. I that might
have been their best team. I think they won twelve
games that year. But I think the fans are great
when the team isn't very good. And I've seen this
around the country, the fan base, even in Buffalo. I

(24:55):
remember growing up. I grew up a Bills fan, and
when they were terrible, they weren't selling out the stadium. Obviously,
when you're good, everybody jumps on the bandwagon.

Speaker 5 (25:03):
I think.

Speaker 7 (25:03):
I think Panther fans are as good as any fans.
You know, they got a group of people that travel
to road games. But it's hard to get excited when
you're knocked out of the playoff picture after the first
four or five games. And that's understandable.

Speaker 6 (25:18):
And you called the games when, for one, Julius Peppers
was playing. Who just got inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Speaker 2 (25:24):
When?

Speaker 6 (25:25):
And how much of a weight if it happens. I
think it will happen for Steve Smith and Luke keig
Lee will have a chance, maybe even be a first balloder.
But you tell me, Luke Keiklee, Steve Smith, like, what
can we expect from Canton out of the Panthers groups
that you've known of over the past few years, and
when they may land in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Well, I.

Speaker 7 (25:45):
Think Luke's and no brainer. I would think Luke Keig
will be a unanimous choice if I was casting a
ballot for a guy who dominated the game and was
so smart. You talk to people that played against Luke
Keighley and you know, even he listened to Peyton Manning
talking about Keegley. Keikley was calling out the play that
they were going to run. I mean, this guy was

(26:07):
so good. Career cut short by h you know, the
head injuries and the concussions. I think that's if there's
a sure thing, it's Luke Keagley getting in first year
he is eligible. For Steve, it's a little different. I
think his numbers will get him in. I think eventually
people will look and go, ah, okay, that was Steve
and he had a chip on his shoulder. There's never

(26:28):
been a better receiver for the Carolina Panthers than Steve Smith.
So I think eventually he will get in.

Speaker 1 (26:33):
The Hall of Fame?

Speaker 6 (26:34):
Is that kind of it for right now? It seems
like Greg Olsen borderline, but probably doesn't seem very likely
at least anytime soon.

Speaker 2 (26:42):
No.

Speaker 7 (26:43):
I you know, again, he was on some really good
teams with the Panthers, but that's a that's a toughie.
You get into those positions like offensive linemen. I worked
with Jeff van Ot in Atlanta, and you compare notes career,
which lasted some I mean he was in the league
from like the late sixties to eighty five, made more.

(27:05):
I think he made as many Pro Bowls or maybe
one more than Dan Dierdorf did, but played on a
bunch of crummy teams. And I think he deserves to
get in. I think Roman Gabriel deserves to get in
for his career. I'm a broadcast partner, you know, rustin Peace, Gabe.
But again it's you know, it's hit or miss with
some of these guys, especially offensive lineman. Like how do

(27:26):
you judge how good an offensive lineman is? I guess
if you're an outstanding tackle, that's one thing, because you
can see the one on you know, how well do
they protect the quarterback's blind side. That's a little easier
than Garden center. So you know, again, back to the Panthers,
who may or may not get in that I don't

(27:47):
think other than Olsen, I can't think of anybody else
at this point.

Speaker 4 (28:12):
Welcome back here on Panther Talking a Shrop. Jimzokie, Eugene Robinson.
Time to bring in from the Gojo and Golic Show
on DraftKings Network. Mike Golick Junior, Eugene. That is junior,
not not the day out, not the dad who you
played against.

Speaker 5 (28:30):
Yeah, your dad was a beef man, will punch you
in the mouth legally and illegally, but he was punching
the mouth.

Speaker 2 (28:37):
He was a beast man, no doubt about that.

Speaker 5 (28:38):
Ferosis I was gonna.

Speaker 1 (28:43):
Go.

Speaker 8 (28:43):
But he'll even admit you e limited athletes certain aspects
of the game. So he had to take every little
inch that he could find on the field.

Speaker 5 (28:50):
Yeah, man, but he had a heart of gold and
just that passion and that drive and and admit it
with the infectious with people around him too.

Speaker 2 (28:57):
So now he was a beef much left to your
dad and makes what's no doubt.

Speaker 4 (29:01):
Well, Mike, you're here because the chiefs are in town
on Sunday, and that potentially brings together a cross section
of two of your favorite things, football and Taylor Swift
and Mike You know this all too well. I did
my homework. The Era's tour is in Toronto, and Taylor's

(29:22):
got a concert on November twenty third. The Chiefs are
in Charlotte Sunday November twenty fourth, and the Era's tour
does not resume until December sixth and Vancouver, So Taylor
Swift has a bye week built in on the back end.

Speaker 2 (29:40):
Come on, Tyler, get over here.

Speaker 4 (29:41):
How would you handicap the chances of t Swift being
in Charlotte on Sunday?

Speaker 8 (29:47):
Yeah, if we're doing the yes no here for Taylor
right now, I gotta think yes is juiced to minus
money here. I think you guys got a real good
shot with the schedule lining up here, and you think
about it, she needs to be there right now. Coming
off a tough loss. Are the Kansas City Chiefs. Travis
didn't have a ton of looks in the last game
where they lost to the Bills, and so he's going
to be looking a rebound and always seems to play

(30:09):
better when he's got her in the crowd. So I
would expect Panthers fans may have that to look forward to,
which you know, Listen, the team's got a bunch of
things they're probably not looking forward to and seeing Kansas
City in town, but at the very least Taylor Swift
in the stands could be one of them.

Speaker 4 (30:22):
Well, well, we'll keep an eye out.

Speaker 6 (30:24):
We'll see what happens. We'll be on that level, We'll
see what happens. At the press area, Mike, it's Jim
Zoki with the A Niche and Eugene here. What about
this Chiefs team? A Niche was remarking, and I'm kidding,
how lucky the Chiefs have been so far this year
to win so many close games. Obviously they're a team
that has a different level come postseason as well. How
do you think this particular year of the Chiefs compares

(30:46):
with what they've been the last couple of years. They
look at strong, say offensively at the skill.

Speaker 8 (30:49):
Positions, No, I think really like high end talent overall.
The roster, even from last year, took a bit of
a step back, right. Let some guys walk out of
the door on defense on the back end of that team. Offensively,
we know, really in the last few years there's been
that churn at wide receiver trying to find bodies the
Patrick Mahomes can trust in critical situations as Travis Kelsey

(31:10):
does get older and so no. I think this year
has been a testament to just all of the creative
ways the Chiefs have learned over the years how to
win football games. They're poison critical moments, understanding that not
every playing every down in the body of a game
has made equal I know, we say, hey, they're all
just one playing a game. No one play wins or
loses a game, but we all know money downs, high

(31:31):
leverage situation, third down, in red zone, and especially at
the end of games, there are spots where everyone else's
hearts beat a little bit faster than the ones in
Kansas City. And look no further than what we saw
last week in Buffalo, the change Sean McDermott and company
made stylistically, Sean McDermott is a defensive head coach by nature,
which means more often than not, very conservative by nature
and how he approaches the game. And yet even he

(31:53):
changed his fourth down decision making Layden games and acknowledge
it's because they've got so much exposure to this Kansas
City Chiefs team. Both regular season in postseason, he knows
what happens when you give Pat the ball back, and
so he's got to go out there and win it.
It made Buffalo act against their nature because they understand
exactly what this Chiefs team is capable of, and I
think that's what carried them so far, even if the

(32:13):
talent might not be what we're used to.

Speaker 5 (32:15):
Well, let's talk about the advent of DeAndre Hopkins and
what that means to the Cansta Chiefess and particularly Patrick Mahomes.

Speaker 8 (32:23):
Yeah, I think it does give him. We talked about,
you know, looking for people to count on the passing attack.
I think it does give him an adults in the
room there, we know that this wide receiver corps has
been young, especially Zavi You're Worthy trying to come in
and be the guy that speed threat downfield they've been
missing since Kyrie Hill came in. But he's a rookie
and there's still areas that he's got to grow mature
as a player. Juju Smith Schuster is someone that's been

(32:44):
on this roster, but we know limited in this Gill
set at this point kind of almost mimics the pseudo
tight end in that role. And so with DeAndre Hopkins.
We saw the dividends paid earlyer a guy who can
still go downfield and make contested catches, and a guy
who's going to be where he needs to be winning
one on one one needs him most, and when other
teams are putting a lion's share of their attention on
Travis in those key moviens and so again, I think,

(33:07):
because of his age at this point, DeAndre Hopkins on
the wrong side of thirty at wide receiver for a
guy that was never a monster separator as much as
he was contested catch artist, good route runner, is going
to be a guy where maybe the production's not every
week great. But I do think that much like the
rest of this veteran roster, they understand what they're building towards.
They know they don't need the one seed necessarily anymore

(33:29):
to go and be successful in the postseason, and so
they're trying to work out all the kinks right now
and make sure when it comes time for January and
February football that they have these guys in the best position,
know what he does best, and are ready to use
that early and often.

Speaker 4 (33:42):
But Mike, when you look at Patrick Mahomes and we
talked about the supporting cast being a part of the
math here. You know, he hasn't been that enchanted Patrick
Mahomes that we've seen in years past. Mister perfectly fine
if you will. Fifteen touchdowns, league leading, eleven intersces. Is
this a mortal Patrick Mahomes or is this a Patrick

(34:06):
Mahomes that's more just victim of circumstance with the supporting cast.

Speaker 8 (34:11):
I think, you know what, like a lot of people,
we've seen so much greatness from Patrick Mahomes over time
that I'm willing to write off a certain amount of
this also. And this is because, especially post Tyreek Hill,
I think we've seen this where Patrick Mahomes and this
team are almost like I think about them like I
think about an NBA team with a veteran roster, and
we know how devalued the NBA's regular season has become

(34:31):
for so many people as these teams prioritize the health
of their rights.

Speaker 4 (34:34):
I said it earlier, we were talking about that late nineties,
early two thousand Lakers light switch.

Speaker 8 (34:39):
Yes, it's it is. It's a it's a light switched team.
But and I think a part of that is the
same way you tinker with lineups in the NBA and
with basketball, Patrick Mahomes is tinkering with what he can
get away with with certain players in certain situations, and
so he's gonna keep taking chances downfield knowing, Hey, we
might turn the ball over a little more than I'd
want to and we're accustomed to here. Hey, we might

(35:00):
not make as many plays, but I have to keep
trying much the same way they did last year with
those guys to make sure I know without a shadow
of a doubt when we get to the football that
does matter. This is what we've got in the arsenal.
And oh, by the way, we've got the defense as
a backstop to help us with that as we go
along here. So no, I do think great minds tinkle
like here, and it's an apt comparison, all right.

Speaker 6 (35:20):
Last thing, it's college football that I'll let you go
because I know you love Notre Dame. Obviously, was that
fake punt that was called back by the penalty the
most single disappointing moment of this college football season?

Speaker 8 (35:31):
No, you know what, It still hasn't dethroned the loss
to NIU, which hurt me in ways that I don't
like to talk about. But that being said, for Marcus
Freeman to company, and you guys know this, when you've
got to play like that, how far in advance you
put in. We've heard more since then that this is
a play they install way back in camp before the season.
They're going over it with officials to make sure that

(35:51):
it passes every margin of error that could possibly be
applied to this thing. And when you finally get it
in your team, execuse it right and they call it wrong.
Understand why Marcus Freeman was normally calm, cool, collected debuting
some sort of gear or a new uniform on the
sideline that we can't buy in the bookstore, because you
gotta look as good as Marcus Freeman to be able
to wear that. He actually looked like he was bothered

(36:14):
on the sideline for like the first time I've seen
him all season. So that's when you know it bad
when you've picked Marcus Freeman off of all people.

Speaker 4 (36:21):
Jim hit a nerve. I thought I might.

Speaker 6 (36:24):
I'm not even a Notre Dame fan, but I enjoyed
that place so much. I think for America we were
disappointed it didn't hold up.

Speaker 8 (36:31):
I agree, you know what, we deserve nice things every
once in a while, and college football is a place
where usually those nice things are really dumb things that
happen out of nowhere. Or it's like we saw the
guy from Southern a five nine, three hundred and fifty
pounds sought off shotgun scoring touchdown there. It's a beautiful
thing to watch. We actually had high level execution in
college football. You don't get to say that often. And
the Zebras roped on.

Speaker 4 (36:54):
He is Mike Golig Junior. You can catch him on
Gojo and Goli Gold Draft Kings Network, Buddy. Always a
pleasure and go Army.

Speaker 8 (37:05):
Appreciate the Taylor Swift comments. Don't appreciate this on the
way out.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
As good ones.

Speaker 4 (37:10):
Mike Golig Junior, Eugene Robinson, Jim Zokie, great stuff from Mike.
This is gonna be an interesting game. I don't think
this is the Kansas City Chiefs team that is as
good as their nine and one record is. And the
Panthers have some confidence. There's a little more to this
game than maybe people thought a few weeks ago. We're

(37:32):
gonna wrap up Panther Talk when we come back. It's
presented by Bosh power Tools on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (37:40):
This is Panther Talk. Please end it by Bosh Power Tools.

Speaker 4 (37:46):
Either of you guys watch Mike Tyson Jake Paul on
Friday night.

Speaker 2 (37:50):
I stayed up and watching it. Yes, I did.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
I watched nine Boks.

Speaker 6 (37:52):
I knew Eugen would watch it for me.

Speaker 2 (37:54):
Yeah, I did it. I watched that. Jim, you missed.

Speaker 4 (37:57):
You missed absolutely nothing, That's what I heard.

Speaker 6 (38:00):
There was board talk about afterwards and conspiracies and craziness.

Speaker 2 (38:03):
So I'm glad I did. I heard it buffered half
the time.

Speaker 1 (38:06):
It was hard to.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Yes, it did.

Speaker 5 (38:08):
It did buffer a lot too, and I had to
go ahead and rewind things, and you know, and some
people they were talking about it kind of reminds you
of AOL back in the day. You can't even get
back on the thing. You know, you got a dial
in and put this thing. But it was, yeah, it
was like a delayed delay delay and to me, buffering.

Speaker 4 (38:25):
For me, I was thinking about this, You've got all
this build up, and I guess it's speaks to the
sad state of boxing that an influencer in the wild
and a fifty eight year old Mike Tyson is probably
one of the biggest marquee draws that you know in
a long time. That speaks to where boxing is. But
you had got all this build up and the hype,

(38:46):
and it's on Netflix so everybody can watch it, and
then it's just kind of, you know, one giant fart noise.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
It was.

Speaker 6 (38:52):
It was, it was, it was, And that was before
the walk off by Tyson after his.

Speaker 4 (38:56):
Interview may have in the most entertaining part of.

Speaker 2 (39:01):
The whole fight. I'm glad that didn't have the noise.

Speaker 4 (39:05):
That was a metaphor for what we were about to see.

Speaker 2 (39:09):
That's what you're talking about. But we grew up in
such great boxing.

Speaker 6 (39:13):
Were a little bit older than we grew up with
the Ali and Frasier and Foreman and and then like
Sugar Ray and Durant and those guys.

Speaker 2 (39:20):
It was just it was.

Speaker 6 (39:21):
It was a big, big agular Yeah.

Speaker 5 (39:26):
My goodness, some really good box and even the welterweight
division and the heavyweight division, middleweight division, it was a
division that everybody knew there was a the top guy
that's there, and there was another guy that was going
to challenge, and you knew it was gonna be a
good fight from Berto Durant and Sugar Ray lennot what.

Speaker 6 (39:43):
It's so bad that Sylvester Stilens quit making boxing movies.

Speaker 2 (39:45):
That's how bad I got.

Speaker 4 (39:46):
Yeah, that's what this fight was because I remember going
into the theater to watch one of the Rocky movies
and it was the one after Rocky five that came out,
maybe I must be eighteen twenty years ago, somewhere around oh.

Speaker 6 (40:04):
Four at the time, my gun.

Speaker 4 (40:05):
Was it the one after the time he goes Rocky Balboa.
I think it was just called Rocky Belbo where essentially
the Rocky character plays a fifty something year old boxer
coming out of retirement to fight another boxer played by
Antonio Tarvar. That's what we watched on Friday night, right,
and it was a bad movie.

Speaker 2 (40:26):
Life imitating art.

Speaker 5 (40:29):
Use art loosely when I say that, Yeah, it was
not that great a fight at all that one.

Speaker 4 (40:33):
But you're right, you'll have better fight scenes and Gladiator
this Friday.

Speaker 2 (40:36):
I can't wait for glad Hope.

Speaker 6 (40:38):
Do we know this for a fact that it's good
because the biggest the biggest disappointment is when they have
a long way to the sequel comes out and it
just flops.

Speaker 2 (40:45):
Are you not entertained.

Speaker 4 (40:46):
I gotta figure it out if it's a sequel, because
he dies in the first one.

Speaker 2 (40:51):
That's right, it's got Denzel in this. We know clear.
Are you not entertained?

Speaker 4 (40:57):
Screen Movement Training Day, Denzel?

Speaker 1 (41:00):
