Speaker 1 (00:00):
The following is an exclusive presentation of the Carolina Panthers
in the National Football League.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
PANTHERTLL and They're tell and They're doll.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh Power Tools on
the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Fourth and four comes down to this car out of
the shotgun. Here's the snap in the pocket. Car floats
it deep, devil wept side for Wilson and has juggled
and then complete Carolina takes over.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
It felt great, you know, It's just it's a great
feeling obviously anytime you go in this league. So you know,
we'll worry about tomorrow, you know, cleaning stuff up and
getting better, but right now it's definitely definitely feels great.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
And now, along with Jim Zokie and Eugene Robinson, here's
a Niche Shruff with Panther Talk live from the Panthers
broadcast facility at Bank of America Stereo.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Victory Monday on Minstreet, Panthers knock off the Saints twenty
three twenty two. On Sunday, Carolina's defense comes up with
a stop on New Orleans last three offensive possessions and
the Panthers get in the win column with a home
w Let's bring in the head coach of the Carolina Panthers,
Dave Canalis. Dave, since you took over, I've heard you
(01:25):
say countless times, finish, Finish, finish. What did it take
to finish on Sunday?
Speaker 5 (01:32):
It took a whole bunch of guys just believing that
we could get it done, aniche I was so proud
of this group just staying with it, you know, guys
getting nicked, you know, in the game, coming back out
to us, showing that toughness and commitment to each other
really and to just stay with it. There was some adversity,
you know, there were some there was some hard drives
(01:52):
for us offensively, you know, where we didn't get the
results we wanted. Defensively, you know, they they had some
success again, you know, in the run game, and to
keep playing football the way into the red zone different times.
It just I love that part of the character, these
guys that just keep fighting and scratching to improve our football.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
When you look at the receiving corps, right, Adam Thielen
still not back, Deyontay Johnson traded away, and what's it
been like to watch some of these young guys, even
a tight end like j T. Sanders, continue to step
up and make plays.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
Oh, It's awesome, especially for the for the staff who
just you know, has invested so much time into these
guys helping them improve weekly. For the guys to just
be studs about just coming back to work, you know,
regardless of the outcomes of the of the previous games,
to build on successes and also to look truthfully at
the things we need to improve, you know, talking about
the youth, you know, on both sides of the ball
(02:46):
really and so you know, to see those things show
up in the consistency that we're looking for, you know,
still out there for us, but it's getting better incrementally.
So I'm really proud of those guys, Coach.
Speaker 6 (02:55):
Besides the fourth down play where we know that Jack
had a good job on one of us, there were
plays earlier that I thought really contribute to the success
of the team and the defense, and that was that
Sack got pressure from and I can remember Jake Delom
saying that the closers need to close and they need
to finish. And then you got what you needed from
(03:16):
Clowney and also Hairs.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
Yeah, effort right, and just more opportunities to rush the passer.
You know, I think when when teams run the ball well,
they put themselves in favorable third down, so you don't
get great rush ups because the ball's coming out quickly.
But if you can win on first down and you
can put them in those situations where they got to
throw it, and some of them was by penalties, you know,
where we end up getting some rush ups. But they
finished and they kept going and they kept looking for
(03:39):
those opportunities.
Speaker 7 (03:40):
So it's right on the defensive side. Coach Demani Richardson,
undrafted rookie out of Texas A and M. He's started
the last two games, twenty three tackles in two games.
Take us back to even in training camp and what
you guys saw about him back then and what he's
doing now.
Speaker 5 (03:54):
For you, ye had great ball production in camp. You know,
he was the guy that consistently every couple of days
would find way to get an interception, you know, or
be around the ball. And so he's got that awareness,
and I think it also just points to the prep,
you know, for a rookie to be able to study,
to be able to be conscientious, ask the right questions,
you know, he's he's been really engaged and it's paying off,
(04:15):
you know, just staying with the process and growing even
with his time on practice squad to keep you know,
being involved in what was happening on the defensive side,
and it's paying off for him.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
What was your assessment, Dave of Bryce's performance.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
I thought he took steps. I thought he grew from
one week to the next, you know, just being hard
on himself and you know, taking coaching and trying to
apply it to his game and finding opportunities down the
field to the guys that he's getting more and more
comfortable with when he gets these opportunities.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
And past pro look good.
Speaker 7 (04:45):
I mean, we talked about going in Brady Christensen at
left tackle, kid may He's looks like he great out
really well well, et cetera. What did you see about
the new alignment with what you had to put together
for the offensive line this week.
Speaker 5 (04:55):
Yeah, they battled and they worked all week talking to
each other, communicating, getting the pressure looks sorted out, the
run game, all those things. It's a really great route
that you know, coach Goodie and Joe and Khalie have
really built in there for guys to communicate and just
work together whatever the lineup might be.
Speaker 6 (05:11):
Coach, I thought the game plan to stretch the field
was outstanding because even if you don't make those throws
down the field, you put the defense on. Notice, what
did you see in the passing game? And particularly stretching
the field allowed you to go ahead and have some
of the success underneath.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Oh E, Gene. First of all, I'm coachable. You know,
you guys asked for more shots down. We took a
few more.
Speaker 8 (05:34):
How did you go?
Speaker 5 (05:35):
I think I think it's just, you know, it's important
that with our run game, it's important to make sure
that we get the ball pushed down the field, you know,
in those opportunities where they're giving us the looks to
do it, and you know we we didn't come up
with all of them, but we came up with a few,
and it's good to just find that chemistry, you know,
because we're gonna need.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
It, Dave, with reinforcements possibly being on the way. For
those who missed your press conference, guys like feeling Jonathan Brooks,
DJ Wanham, where are you in terms of their status
from Munich?
Speaker 5 (06:09):
I feel really confident about these guys from a physical standpoint. Again,
we have two practices at home before we get on
a plane. I want to make sure they come out with,
you know, an aggressive attitude to attack it. We can't
have guys easing in to playing football on Sundays. That's
not how this league works. These guys have to give
us the full confidence to know they're going to go
out there and be themselves. And so we're hopeful for
(06:30):
that and expecting a good couple of days before we
make those decisions.
Speaker 6 (06:34):
And Coach Mike, I've been a big Cuba fan all
day long, and and just because I think you guys
run the boss so well, so we'll continue to see
more Cuba running that rock.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Absolutely, and just the attitude of the starting point of
our offense. It's it's with Cuba, you know. And I think,
you know, going back to the first downs, you know,
getting some winning on first down, putting us in situations
where we can hand the ball off, you know, and
get our actions going. But also third down, you know,
just trying to take strides. And we had a couple
of good ones, but we had a lull there in
the middle of the game. So all those things are
(07:08):
critical to give us more downs so we can see
it come alive.
Speaker 7 (07:12):
David, is an organization we've not had and we only
had one actually international game is London five years ago.
What have your experience has been like and what are
some of the keys as far as you mentioned a
couple of practices heading in before you head out, as
far as handling it here, what you go through once
you get to the other side, and getting ready for
the game on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
I have a lot of excitement just for new surroundings. Again,
for a lot of the guys who haven't been out
of the country, you know, necessarily it's going to be
a really cool experience for them to see, you know,
what the rest of the world looks like. And going
to Germany will give us that opportunity. Playing in a
different environment is certainly special. So I'm excited for that
as well. Then, and then of course, just like the
(07:50):
challenge of just the time zone changes and all those things,
can we be disciplined enough to make the adjustment because
that's also part of the competition, right We're competing against
the giants to see who can make the transition a
six hour difference as smooth as possible.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
How do you do that? What is sort of the
weekly plan to get everybody's body clocks aligned, if you will.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
Yeah, it starts off with the flight.
Speaker 9 (08:14):
You know.
Speaker 5 (08:14):
It's it's when we get on that plane at six pm,
it's already midnight, you know, so you know, trying to
find a way to make sure that you turn that
plane flight into a good night's sleep as good as
you can. And once you're there, it's about the progressive
you know, wake up calls and then trying to stay
(08:34):
awake during the day when you're tired. It's like, the
best thing you can do is not take a nap
so that you can stay up a little bit later
to allow your body clock to adjust in those couple
of days. And then you know what, on game day,
regardless of what happened for the for those first couple
of days, leapwise, let's go. You know, it's about adrenaline,
it's about you know, take getting everything you can to
(08:55):
play that game.
Speaker 6 (08:55):
And coach, does that mean also that maybe your preparation
started before hand? I guess the Giants putting this stuff beforehand.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
Yes, we got a little bit of a jump start.
But again we have today and tomorrow as our normal
prep days, so you know, we're just kind of on
top of that as far as our game plans, and
then we'll try to get as much done here at
home before we get to Germany, because you know, just uh,
it's we'll come up with the with the better plan,
you know, making most of our decisions from the you know,
confines and the comforts of our own offices.
Speaker 7 (09:27):
Have you been before? Is as your first trip to
to Munich or to Germany? What's your what's your background
with it?
Speaker 5 (09:32):
I was there two years ago with the Seahawks. We
played against the Bucks in the same stadium, so I'm
familiar with the transition, and I know the challenges and
the it's it's such a great environment. It's really cool,
and it's it's kind of an collective, you know, collection
of football fans with a bunch of different jerseys. You
don't necessarily see Giants and Panthers. You're gonna see like
the most popular players in the league jerseys in the stadium.
(09:55):
But it's it's a great experience.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
How how is your German coach?
Speaker 7 (09:59):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Not great? Gotta be honest.
Speaker 6 (10:01):
Well, at least a West coast trip is a lot
you know, East coast trip a little a lot easier
than the West coast trip.
Speaker 8 (10:07):
It should be I guess y, yeah, hopefully.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
And it's it's it's pretty it's a pretty fair, you know,
challenge for both of us coming from the East coast.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
Coach, we appreciate it. We'll we'll see you in Munich.
Speaker 9 (10:18):
All right, thanks guys, thank you.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Dave Canalis, head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 9 (10:23):
But he's talked about players sleep.
Speaker 7 (10:25):
That's picturing that Russell Wilson trip where he was going
up and down the aisles where they talked about him
stretch and like, you know, doing like lunges up and
down there.
Speaker 9 (10:33):
I was like, we're going to.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
And there happened to be a camera on them. Somebody
was recording it. Won or why then it was posted. Listen,
this is an opportunity to stack a couple of wins
going into the bye week. You beat the Saints, you
showed some grit. I thought Bryce played pretty well. Dave
Canal said earlier today that you know, they're still gonna
work through some stuff before determining who the quarterback will be,
(10:58):
whether it's Andy Dalton, whether it's young Sunday in Munich.
But the Giants are a team that's had issues at
quarterback with Daniel Jones, They've had injuries, they've underachieved. Their
coach is feeling some of the same pressure that Dennis
Allen felt for the Saints. Allen, if you didn't know,
was fired earlier today. So this is another opportunity game.
(11:21):
And Jim on top of all of that. For the Panthers,
this team was so beat up for most of the
first half of the season. You're starting to finally get
healthy and then the guys who were forced to play
more snaps than they probably should have now become your
depth and you hope that can bode well in the
second half.
Speaker 7 (11:38):
Yeah, that's always the silver lining when you get guys back,
is that we've put, you know, developed an opportunity for
some young guys to have more opportunities out there, with
you know, Adam Fieln coming back, Jalen Cocher doesn't have
to do as much with you expect to see Jordan Fuller.
Nick Scott that as good as Demani Richardson's playing, that
you can limit the reps and you have fresh legs
(12:00):
for the fourth quarter of games because you get the
ability to circulate guys in there. What we're seeing with
the offensive line, you know, when Nicky comes back and
getting everybody back in place there.
Speaker 9 (12:09):
I'm excited to see Jonathan Brooks. I mean that we
all are.
Speaker 7 (12:11):
That's the I mean, it's been talked about and I
think he's got the ability to be a really dynamic player.
And Eugene, don't you think that's one of those positions
in this league too, that none of them are easy,
But running back is one of those things like go
be a running back. I mean you have to block,
you have to do some other things, but your running
back is one of those things like get the ball
in your hands in open space. And you know they'll
ask more of them as time goes on as far
(12:32):
as blocking and some other things. But be fun just
to see him and what he could do when that
opportunity comes.
Speaker 8 (12:36):
Just let him eat.
Speaker 6 (12:37):
I'm anxious to see how he's gonna eat. I think
he was going to compliment what we do offensively so well,
and I think he'll be that that specialty type.
Speaker 8 (12:47):
I think I'm McAffrey, that's what I think of.
Speaker 6 (12:49):
It's just a guy who could just go and make
things happen, and you can just give him the rock
with you in space or handing the ball off.
Speaker 8 (12:55):
He's gonna put some work in.
Speaker 6 (12:57):
Also defensively, don't forget the Giants is give up one
hundred and forty two yards rushing. I love the way
Cuba runs, I love the way the leadership, I love
how our deep I mean, our offensive line run blocks.
And so I think this can be a golden opportunity
to go ahead and put the I say, two hundred
yards rushing on them.
Speaker 8 (13:18):
I really think.
Speaker 6 (13:19):
So this team is not a really good stopping the
run team, and I think one thing we do well
is run the rock.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Yeah. And one of the things with Brooks, this was
a guy who in college was great at running by people,
running around people, and running through people. He was a
dual threat, was a very good receiver out of the backfield,
an elusive, shifty but powerful runner. This gives the coaching
staff and Dave Canalis on the offensive side some options,
(13:50):
maybe more twenty one personnel, two back sets. We've seen
a lot of formations where Cuba's been in the backfield
and Miles Sanders has been motioned out into the slot
or as a wide receiver. You can do some of
the same stuff with Brooks obviously coming off of torn
acl how much does he trust the knee, how quickly
is he gonna be willing to push off? All that
(14:11):
stuff will come into play, and we may not see
the real version of Brooks until maybe December, but he
gives this offensive staff another toy to play with and
another guy who can create matchup problems for the defense.
Speaker 8 (14:23):
Do you think Marshall fawk like Reggie Bush?
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Like?
Speaker 8 (14:26):
What do you think?
Speaker 1 (14:26):
Listen? If we get Marshall fawk light, we got ourselves
a heck of a player.
Speaker 8 (14:31):
You know, that's right, beast.
Speaker 6 (14:33):
I mean, anybody who plays in space and can it
could just make you look absolutely ridiculous. You know, we're
talking about Reggie Bush, Marshall Faulk, that type of that
type of player, and so Brooks he seems to be
that type of player.
Speaker 7 (14:47):
First running back in the draft to be taken so
and again in today's you know medical world. I mean
we've we've seen it. You know, Nick Chubbs back out.
They're playing right now for Cleveland. Not running quoter is
effectively that their linees not great. But if okay, further
than time, Miss Davis to see guys that can come
back from multiple acls. So with today's you know, surgeries
and rehab and so forth, you can get back to
being fully what you were before.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
And he was somebody before he injured the ACL at
Texas in November of last season. He was looked at
as a potential first round pick, even a guy as
a running back position that has been devalued by the NFL,
somebody who can go within the top twenty to twenty
five picks. He falls to round two because of the injury.
(15:31):
The Panthers scoop him up, and again he's another guy
part of what is really the theme through the first
nine games of the season, this rookie class. And again
it's not just the guys we drafted. We're seeing it
out of leaguet. Who's got four touchdown receptions, Brooks is
getting close to coming back. Trevin Wallace double digit tackles
(15:54):
in his first two games that he started. He's now
a starter, and he's become a starter and looks like
he's got a chance to be a really good player.
Richardson Demani Richardson, Jalen Cocher, JT Sanders. He's had a
career high in receptions or receiving yards in three of
his last four games. That is a foundation. And if
(16:15):
you look at the previous couple of draft classes, let's
be honest, even on teams that were throw five hundred
and weren't very good, some of these guys weren't seeing
the field. This rookie class is seeing the field and
making an impact.
Speaker 6 (16:29):
And making a huge impact. And that's what I mean
you made. You mentioned that on the radio the other
day after game, and I think you're absolutely right them
making an impact and coach can count on these guys
and that's only gonna just boast their confidence as they
move forward. I think we're just see in just the
beginning of how good this Wookie class.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Is and you got to keep stacking them. But it
feels like there's a foundational layer here to build on.
When Panther Talk continues, presented by Bosh Power Tools, we'll
hear Jim's interview with Dante way Sleep Plus for all
of you making the trip to Munchen, munchin munchin, Jim,
(17:07):
you know German munchin Munich, munchin.
Speaker 9 (17:09):
Yeah, moonshin.
Speaker 8 (17:12):
Shine, munchkins.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
I went to Moonshine.
Speaker 8 (17:17):
Were go ahead.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
For those of you going to Munich, we have a
little travel expert for you is gonna kind of give
you the dues, the don'ts, the places to see, places
to avoid, and how you can plan a nice little
itinerary if you haven't or if you just need a
few other things to tack on to your itinerary. All
that ahead here on Panther Talk on the Carolina Panthers
(17:40):
Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bush power.
Speaker 1 (17:47):
Toolsprice throws back at the episode Touchdown excel x xaviorly
yetis fourth touchdown of the season.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Gid Up took everything.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
It just took us sticking together. I think that was
really the biggest thing, you know, again, back and forth,
game throughout and just through that especially that that last
drive on both sides of the ball on us just
believing in ourselves, sticking together, playing for each other. I
think that's that's really what pushed us over the top.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Panther Talk continues on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
In the commercial break, I just googled what is the
German word for panther, Dere panther. Yeah, I was hoping
for something more exotic, De dere Derek panther, the e
R lowercase letters. Am I saying that right.
Speaker 7 (18:37):
Yep, dere Panther. I interviewed. We have a nephew that
lives in Unich. He's born there and so Sanders College,
you mate married a German lawyer, so he's a nephew
of ours. And I interviewed him for the Sunday show.
I recorded it and I asked, how do we say
touchdown panthers? He goes, I think if you say touchdown panthers,
that's gonna be pretty well known what.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
It is like.
Speaker 9 (18:59):
How help me here?
Speaker 7 (19:01):
Do something German? You know, say something? Albeter saying say something.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
It reminds me of the Saturday Night Live skit with
Chris Farley when he's the wrestler. I am el Nino,
which is Spanish for the Nino. Panther Gespratch is the
word apparently for panther talk, and I probably butchered that week.
Speaker 9 (19:24):
I started a position to correct you.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
Not until next week the Germans can correct us. Panther
Talk presented by Bosh Power Tools Unsunging Heroes from Sunday.
I'm gonna start with Brady Christensen. We have seen him
play every position on the offensive line. When Austin Corbett
went down, he became the starting center, and then when
ikey Ikuanu went down, okay, you're gonna play left tackle,
(19:48):
which he played in twenty twenty one at the end
of the season started there, thought he quitted himself pretty well,
and then they moved him to guard for the following season,
where he was pretty good before getting hurt in the
season finale that biceps injury. Played left tackle. We didn't
call his name a whole lot, which meant did a
pretty good job. Cade may stepped in its center. This
(20:08):
is somebody again as you look with one eye toward
the future. The ability to play five positions on the
offensive line and to be not just a swing tackle,
a swing guard, a center, a backup center. Boy, that
is valuable, and he knows your system. Brady Christensen is
increasing his value by a lot showing us what he
(20:32):
can do. And we kind of already knew it. But
to go from center to go from left tackle and
for all of it to seem seamless, I thought that
was mighty impressive.
Speaker 7 (20:40):
I mean, there's some players who just can't flip flop
left or right, let alone do all five positions.
Speaker 9 (20:45):
So that's amazing.
Speaker 7 (20:47):
And we have a segment in the post game show
the hardest working player, and we picked him as that
guy because that's mentally it's got to be so difficult.
And he's funny too, like he'll great out well and
then like someone will bring it up in the locker
room during the press days during the week. He's like, yeah,
we have our own system here. I don't care about that,
but PFF has you whatever. He's like, yeah, I don't care.
I don't care about that stuff. We have our own
internal grading system. So whatever you see. I've always thought
(21:09):
that too. I always though some of that stuff, Like when
you watch a game, sometimes you see someone has a
really good grade one I don't know because there's like
there's stats and then there's eyeball, and it's like, to me,
they always match upside obviously with the insiders here as
far as what they do within the organization, they have
their own standard of what they.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
Expect, and there's little things that I'm not sure PFF
can account for. So for example, let's say a quarterback
has a five step drop but goes seven or eight steps. Yes,
and now the tackle is blocking a certain way, but
the quarterback was the one who didn't follow the script.
And now all of a sudden, your leverage is inside
versus outside, and then you get beat. But again you
(21:48):
were blocking for a certain drop. Again, things like that.
I don't think PFF can account for that nuanced stuff,
you know, And don't forget that happens.
Speaker 8 (21:57):
It happened.
Speaker 6 (21:58):
It happened to Brady on the outside because because his
guy was in a nine technique runs outside rush, it's
about like a five step drop, and he pushes him
back past the five step, but Bryce, instead of stepping up,
he actually stays back and he ends up getting sacked.
And think, now, I know there was a guy in
his face, that's why he didn't step up.
Speaker 8 (22:18):
But you can't level that that sack.
Speaker 6 (22:21):
On like Brady's not doing his job, because that's not true.
And don't forget there's a lot of communication when you
go from center to guard to tackle.
Speaker 8 (22:29):
There's a lot of communication.
Speaker 6 (22:30):
That you have to do across the board, communicate with
each of those positions, making sure that there's no breaches
with all the different stunts and maneuvers that defenses give you.
And I think he's been handled it extremely well. So
I wanted Standards to be my guy as the unsung hero,
and then more that Zolke talked about him.
Speaker 7 (22:48):
And we said, no, you're right, it's Brady Christisen. He
did a great job, Brady. And then just quickly on
the PFS kind of stuff. And there's other great systems
out there. But you know, a quarterback, this is a
receiver and the first slot is quarterback. The receiver run
the right route? Was he bumped off the route? And
then for a defensive back, you know, was he expecting
safety help? I mean, there's so many if you're not
in the team meeting, how can they grade out and
(23:09):
knowing what every team, what their plan.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
Is unless you have the playbook and you know the
play call.
Speaker 8 (23:13):
Yeah exactly.
Speaker 6 (23:14):
And like here, like the interception that was attributed to
you Bryce, well, guess what. That was a great play
by defensive back taking the ball from Legette out of
his hand. That's a great play. But that's not that's
not an interceptionist. So as a a ballplayer, all we
know is that, man, that was a great throw by Bryce,
because wow, that that shouldn't have happened.
Speaker 8 (23:37):
It shouldn't have happened.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
And watched the replay bread basket throw dude, legs got
it and the more you watch it, you're going, how
did he rip that ball away?
Speaker 6 (23:46):
And no, forget it was this messed up hand too,
is in his left hand, which he's hurt.
Speaker 8 (23:50):
So I mean there's a.
Speaker 6 (23:51):
Lot of Uh, there's a lot of things that go
on behind the scenes that you know that the PFF
don't know.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
I thought Bryce played one of his best game Sames
as a Panther. The numbers again don't pop and I
don't think they tell the full story. There was the
play to League Get, which was a big gainer that
was negated with the interception David Moore a touchdown that
should have been caught in the end zone. He drops that. Yeah,
you throw those in there. Bryce probably has two twenty
(24:19):
two thirty.
Speaker 3 (24:20):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
He got the drive extended in one case with Lee Get.
I thought he played pretty well. I'd be curious to
see what happens. And you know, we have a big
day in the NFL on Tuesday with the trade deadline,
and you're gonna see how some of the pieces shake
out and move. But I'm curious to see what happens
with Bryce Young in Munich because I did think he
played pretty well.
Speaker 6 (24:41):
That's not lost on the coaching staff at all, not
one bit. It's not lost on them.
Speaker 7 (24:44):
All.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
Right, we'll we'll be back with Jim's interview with Dante
Wesley on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
This is Panther Talk. Please end him by Bush power
to us.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Here's the staff gift to Juba. Groundhogs forward into the
end zone. Touchdown Carolina and the Panthers go back on top.
Chew them inside the tenth five sides into the end zone.
Touchdown Panthers. He spikes the ball and Carolina's gotta lead. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:13):
It's the discipline that it takes to just keep coming
back to work and keep working on your basics and
your fundamentals.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
And these guys are committed to it. They're committed to growing.
Speaker 5 (25:22):
You know, the staff is committed to developing these guys,
and then you know they keep making the most of
these opportunities.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
This is Panther Talk on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 7 (25:31):
Cornerback Dante Wesley spent two different instints with the Carolina Panthers,
bridging from two thousand and two to two thousand and nine.
He was part of the Super Bowl thirty eight team
and a team made of current GM Dan Morgan as
we talk about great moments from the past and the
optimism he has for the future of the team.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
Thirty Seasons of Panther Football a celebration of the players, coaches,
and other key figures who've contributed to the organizational success.
Speaker 7 (25:58):
Dante Wesley joining us at this defensive back and he
was here from two thousand and two to night.
Speaker 9 (26:02):
So you've you've seen it all.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
Man.
Speaker 7 (26:04):
This past year was not a good one, but you've
also seen this franchise, you know, dig out of that
and play good ball and go to a Super Bowl.
Speaker 10 (26:11):
Yes, I've been around a long time, and so the
year I was here, we played in the Super Bowl
in two thousand and three against the New England Patriots.
Unfortunately we lost. But men, I've been around this organization,
been around this team for so many years. You know,
I live in Dallas now, but I've always kept up
with Carolina. Carolina is the first team I think of
every year looking at their schedule.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
What can I be a part of? But this is
a great organization.
Speaker 10 (26:32):
I was fortunate enough to be around here when we
were winning consistently year after year. So I'm looking it's
a lot of big things for this franchise. I think
it's gonna get turned to the right direction. They got
the right management, right coaches. Of course, I'm big on
the GM. Dan Morgan a good friend of mine, teammate.
He's gonna help turn this program around. It's gonna be
an exciting team, exciting season.
Speaker 7 (26:52):
When you think back to like that era in playing
with Dan and now seeing him as a general manager,
and you all have gone on to great things in
your post playing career, but really his assentiment really quick
with Seattle, Buffalo and now as a general manager for
the Panthers.
Speaker 10 (27:06):
Yes, Dan, he's the perfect guy for the job. Dan
was I know my rookie year when I came in,
he was a he was a leader, he was an
aggressive player, a guy from Miami.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Those guys knew how to win.
Speaker 10 (27:17):
And you think about my second year here, we was
in the super Bowl, super Bowl thirty eight.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
And so Dan knows what needs to be done.
Speaker 10 (27:23):
I think he'd know what players to look for, what
type of players he need to have in the locker room,
and I think he'll get it done. Everything takes time,
and hopefully they'll have a lot of a lot of
things going on this year to be able to help
those guys get in the right direction.
Speaker 7 (27:36):
Super Bowl game was amazing because it had so many
different chapters to it. It was such a sluggish first
start and then you guys are down and you have
that huge comeback in the fourth quarter of the offense
gets going there and then of course you know the
short field position and you know they get the field
goal range there at the end. But what was that
roller coaster like of that that game?
Speaker 10 (27:54):
You know what that game was so exciting because I mean,
we would consider the cardi at cats. We always know
how to win at the end. And so, like you said,
that game was up and down. I mean, we had
it was aggressive game. It was one of the most
physical I think I watched one of the documentaries that
the Patriots said and they some of those guys said
that was the most physicalist game, physicallest game they have
ever played, and was against us. And so the game
(28:15):
was up and down. You know, it went all the
way down to the end as usual, and you know
then with the field placement at the end, and then
you put the goat back there. I mean, one of
the greatest quarterbacks of all time, you put him back
there and give him on the forty yards to make
before a field goal.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
It's hard.
Speaker 10 (28:29):
It's hard for us to stop him. But uh, it was.
It was a great season. It was a great game.
To me, that's one of the one of the greatest
Super Bowls I've ever seen. Even though they don't talk
about it that much on NFL network, they kind of
overlooked that game.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
But that was one of the greatest games.
Speaker 10 (28:44):
I can can look back in and say that was
ever played for a Super Bowl.
Speaker 9 (28:48):
Well, even that whole playoff run.
Speaker 7 (28:49):
I mean that that double overtime game in Saint Louis
is one of the greatest games.
Speaker 9 (28:53):
I don't care who you're a fan of.
Speaker 7 (28:55):
Going into Philadelphia at that time and winning on the road.
What kind of stands out to you about that? That
confidence that came during that playoff run.
Speaker 10 (29:02):
Well, the confidence we had in that playoff run was
that we always found a way how to win.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
I was just talking with Musie.
Speaker 10 (29:07):
Muhammad, and you know, we looked back at that season
and like I said, the Cardiac Cats, we knew how
to win with two minutes left in the game. If
we were down fourteen and we were down twenty one,
we'll find a way to get ahead with those two minutes.
And so this season was a roller coaster. I mean,
starting with the first playoff game against I think against
the Cowboys that year. We beat them that year, and
(29:28):
then we had to go on the road to Saint
Louis and that double overtime game when Steve got caught
the Seahorn route and just scored.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
I can never forget just the.
Speaker 10 (29:38):
The whatever the round stadium was, carcass might have been
twa doing whatever it was.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Yeah, I mean it was quiet.
Speaker 10 (29:44):
I mean the only fans you heard, hollyw was the
Carolina fans way at the top of the stadium. And
I know my mom was there, my wife was there,
and that was just a great game and just a
sight of the crowd like that.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
That was the momentum.
Speaker 10 (29:54):
We need to go into Philly to go back into
another hostile environment and you know, to go up and
fill defiant, play a game there against McNabb and to
get guys they had and it was cold that game,
and we just found a way to come out, you know,
and I was thinking we was gonna come all the way,
We're gonna make the Super Bowl, We're gonna find a
way to come through with New England. But it was
like that last drive, man, it just just broke our backs.
Speaker 9 (30:14):
Man, what was it like playing for John Fox?
Speaker 7 (30:17):
We love him here and uh I got to ask
you to He had subay cliches, you know, it is
what it is and all that kind of stuff. What
were the ones that I don't know that you guys
chuckled at or resonated or whether he.
Speaker 9 (30:27):
Had to hit a long list of some interesting phrases.
Speaker 10 (30:29):
Yeah, he had a lot. I mean, if you're not
getting better, you're getting worse. Make sure you ail your
ferraris up.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
You know.
Speaker 10 (30:37):
It was always something going on with Fox. Fox kept
different little little sayings. He'll say it right, And I
even mentioned some of those says to my son. I
can't just recall directly what I would say, but some
of the things that I remember him was that he
would say I would tell my son to this day,
you know, and I know my son probably look at
me like what are you saying?
Speaker 2 (30:53):
Dad?
Speaker 10 (30:53):
But it's different things and it was all real. It
was it was funny, but it was always truth to it.
But uh man, I enjoyed Fox. Fox was a great coach.
Keppa with Fox even when he went to Chicago, being
also when he went to Danver. You know, he was
a great coach all around. And I haven't seen him
in a while, but hope he's doing way out him his.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
Family and yeah, but he was a great coach. I've
really enjoy him.
Speaker 3 (31:14):

Speaker 1 (31:34):
Panthers head to Munich this weekend to take on the
New York Football Giants and for all things Munich. Let's
bring in a world traveler. She is Caroline Darney. She
is the pop culture writer for USA Today's for the Win. Caroline,
Welcome to Panther Talk. And I know you've been to
Munich a few times, so let's just start right there.
(31:55):
What are the must see attractions the play us Panther
fans have to go to if they're making the trip
to Munich and they can't leave without seeing.
Speaker 11 (32:07):
Hi, guys, Yeah, I'm super stoked to join you. Thanks
for having me. Huge Munich fans. You could not have
found a better person in my opinion. And I'm going
to go with the easiest thing first, which is the
Marion plot. So the center of Munich, absolutely gorgeous plaza
that has this gigantic I'm honestly, I'll be honest if
(32:28):
you guys won't lie to you. I'm not entirely sure
what the building is. I think it's a state building,
but it's just one of the more gorgeous things you're
gonna see there. Great for pictures, and they also have
one of those cool glockenspiel like clock song things that'll play.
It does twice a day, I believe eleven am and
then at noon, and it's super fun to go stand
(32:51):
in the plaza with everybody and take video of the
cool little contraption moving around. So I'd say definitely definitely
start there.
Speaker 6 (32:59):
What are some of the memorabilia that fans need to
take home with them to commemorate the time and being
in Germany?
Speaker 11 (33:06):
Oh, absolutely, other than a full stomach of pretzels and schnitzel.
Schnitzel cannot recommend enough you guys. There's gonna be a
few things you'll be like, oh, that sounds too touristy,
but highly recommend stopping by Hofbrow House, which is one
of the main beer halls where you can have like
(33:27):
a truly authentic beer hall experience. The beer is great,
there's something about they don't need to put as many
preservatives in it, so like some of the beers that
you'll get back in the States will actually taste better there.
And it's not just the magic of travel, it's like
actually science, I guess. But you can always take one
of the really cool steins home with you. They have
a really cool gift shop there for that stuff, and
(33:49):
if you really want to get fancy, you could go
to the BMW Museum and maybe go home with a car.
I mean, depending on what your budget is.
Speaker 1 (33:55):
I have to ask you about the beer because I
don't want to be the schmoe who's gonna hot. I
was going to go there and go to Germany and
order a Heineken, So what's the beer I need to
go get?
Speaker 11 (34:05):
Honestly, whatever it is that you could just say I
want a pilsner and they will bring you something delicious.
I don't think I ordered a single beer by name
while I was there, but honestly, even the Heinekens, like
I said, are pretty good. I've had becks, Yeah, I've
had becks there. That's fantastic. But generally, if you go
(34:26):
somewhere like hofbra House, you can just say, you know,
or any beer garden, because one of the other places
that I'll definitely recommend they have the English Gardens. It's
obviously not like it has like the German name of
English gardens, but there are just honestly beer gardens throughout.
There's the English Garden, and then there's also a really
cool it's called the like Victualian Market or something, but
(34:49):
it's a flea and street market. It's like a farmer's
market type thing. But they have like a huge beer
garden in the middle of town with that. And so
if you go and just say the pilsner, I promise
you won't be disappointed.
Speaker 7 (35:05):
Yeah, most of these places are brewing their own beer,
so you're just having their their brewery of stuff that's there.
And you got to tell them about the foods. Because
I was in the middle of a breakfast sausage, the
white one when someone said, do you know what you're eating?
I go, Oh, you're gonna tell me something? I go,
is it is it hyphenated brain? They go, yes, it
was calf brain, but.
Speaker 9 (35:24):
It tasted good.
Speaker 7 (35:25):
But you you know, you may or made I'm just
saying you may or may not want to know. You
may want to have some extra mustard. Also depending on
what you're eating, right.
Speaker 11 (35:32):
Also true. Yeah, so I'm a bit of a picky eater.
Anyone who knows we can probably attest to that. The
white sausage is not for me.
Speaker 9 (35:41):
What a I'm talking about?
Speaker 11 (35:42):
Yep, yeah, that's one I'm like. But they do have
the stuff that looks like like a really just long
hot dog. Great, they're French fries, generally great if you're
a sauer Kraut fan. Heard great things about that. This
is going to seem out of place, but I actually
went back to my friends. I was there in July
for Taylor Swift Shocker, and we had one of the
(36:06):
best meals was an Italian restaurant right there near like
again the Marion plots, there's a really really cool old
church that's got two towers that's just gorgeous, and it
was called Guido al Duomo, so Duomo being church and
if people listening can get a reservation there, highly worth it. Excellent,
excellent food. But really what's great is you can get
(36:28):
almost any kind of you know, local European fair. But
I really think that it's it's worth trying Nitsole and
you can do either the chicken or the pork. I
usually do the pork nistle, and if you're not familiar,
it's just a very thin piece of pork that's breaded
and deep fried and it's delicious. I mean, I don't know,
(36:51):
it's just very very German and it's very fun. So
I definitely recommend that. Like I said, the pretzels also
worth it. Any bread item that you can find probably
going to be fantastic. They don't mess around with.
Speaker 9 (37:04):
You will get fat there.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
I'm just gonna tell you, okay, all right, you know,
disappointed enough.
Speaker 11 (37:09):
That it'll it'll be okay. You'll be on the move
and it'll be great.
Speaker 1 (37:14):
Real quick before we let you go. For folks that
have never been to Germany before, how much German do
you need to know? Can you get by with English?
Speaker 11 (37:23):
You can get by with English. You know, it might
help to have like an app or something that you
know you can translate, but even with the the public
transportation is fantastic and it's very easy to you know,
hit the English button on there. But most of the stuff,
if you're saying, you know, I think that the stadium
is actually probably you're gonna want to take an uber
(37:46):
or you can find a tax the app or some
of those things. But so much stuff is walkable and
if you if you do, swing by the English Garden.
The last really kind of quirky Munich thing that definitely
check out. It's called the ice Box Wave. I asked,
and people surf on this little like stretch of like
almost like a man made river right there in the
(38:07):
middle of English party that we will.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Have to check out. She is Caroline Darney, the pop
culture writer for for Win for USA Today. Get your schnitzel,
Get your schnitzel with noodles. You got the whole low
down on moonshine. Thank you, Caroline. This is of the

Speaker 3 (38:30):
This is Panther Talk. Please hand it by Bosh power Tools.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Back here on Panther Talk with Jim Zoch, Eugene Robinson
and e Schraff. We head to Munich on Sunday, heading
to Germany. Jim, you've been there a lo A Leon
Stadium Byron.
Speaker 7 (38:50):
Munich Alliance Arena. It is a stadium, but it's called arena.
That's where FC Byron plays. The soccer team that's often
in the Premier League and the big you know tournaments.
Speaker 9 (39:02):
Is that Bundesliga, right, the Bundesliga is the German league.
Speaker 7 (39:04):
There there's one year this season, I guess about I
don't know about ten years ago, maybe eleven years ago
where they won five major titles, like you know, they
just won all the major things that year and including
the Bundaliza. But uh, I'm not a big soccer guy,
but I enjoyed just being around it. It was very
expensive as we didn't pay to go, but we found
a nice beer haul and watched it there and it
was snowing outside and we saved one hundred bucks whatever.
Speaker 8 (39:26):
So we're like, oh, this is no way to do.
Speaker 1 (39:27):
It well euros so with the conversion rate is probably
like one hundred and four bucks. True. At that, I'll
say this, I'm I'm the phoniest soccer fan out there
in a sense. I've got this thing, right. I like
the soccer jackets. You've seen those, Yeah, the soccer track
datas whatever. So whoever makes it Nike Adidas. So anytime
we've been international, pick up a soccer, so I'll wear
(39:53):
like a PSG jacket, right, and random people will come
up to me and say, hey, did you see that?
Speaker 3 (39:57):
No?
Speaker 8 (39:57):
I didn't.
Speaker 1 (39:59):
Hey we almost had that yesterday we played yesterday. Got
one from FC Barcelona. So my one item on the list,
I got to get a Bayron Munich jacket.
Speaker 9 (40:08):
Oh, they're all over the place.
Speaker 7 (40:09):
If you go to the town Square Shoes talking about
Maria and Platts, there's a store right in there. But
you I'm sure millennials will be hawking all over you.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
You know, because you have again and love Charlotte f C.
We root for Charlotte FC. But on the international scene,
it's kind of a thing for some people. Hey do
you like football? Do you like basketball? Do you like baseball?
I don't. I don't follow sports. I watched soccer.
Speaker 8 (40:33):
What do they call it? Football?
Speaker 3 (40:34):
There? Right?
Speaker 1 (40:34):
And they kind of when they say that there's.
Speaker 9 (40:37):
The beautiful game.
Speaker 1 (40:38):
Yes, there's sort of an implied oh you heath and
way down there? Who watches American football? I watch I
watch football. Bayron Munich jacket, that's on my ya. Can
we bring you something back? Youthing.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
No, I do not that.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
Will that go in the.
Speaker 9 (41:01):
Uh russe caf brain some breakfast caf braine?
Speaker 8 (41:06):
No, no presol at all. I'm good, No, I am good.
Speaker 1 (41:10):
German chocolate cake no, no, I can get down with that,
all right?
Speaker 7 (41:16):
Oh you would like the the gummy bears there from
the get goot down or whatever the brand is or whatever.
Speaker 1 (41:21):
Those are German.
Speaker 7 (41:21):
They taste different over there though, there's a different texture
to them. If you like that, that kind of stuff
you want to buy the German version of it's different.
Speaker 6 (41:28):
Yeah, okay, I can get down with some German chocolate cake.
So if you want to bring some back, I'll let you.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
Boy, okay, all right, German chocolate cake, maybe some gummy bears,
the the kind that you can eat. We will talk
to you in Munich.
Speaker 3 (41:48):
