Speaker 1 (00:00):
The following is an exclusive presentation of the Carolina Panthers
in the National Football League.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Panther Tell, and They're Tell, and They're Tell.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh power Tools on
the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 4 (00:18):
I can't be more proud of this group for battling
the whole time, you know, all the way down to
the last drive, for both the defense and the offense
to just just give us more time to keep playing ball,
keep trying to find an identity of how to win games,
you know. And the effort is there, the heart is
there these guys, and I can't be more proud. But again,
there's a bunch of stuff that we still got to
clean up.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
And now, along with Jim Zoki and Eugene Robinson, here's
a niche shruff with Panther Talk live from the Panthers
broadcast facility at Bank of America Stereo.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Eight weeks in the books for your Carolina Panthers. Week nine,
the Sunday back at home against a familiar Faux Division ride,
the New Orleans Saints. Let's begin the show like we
always do with the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
We welcome in, Dave Canalis coach. After reviewing the film
and going through everything, you've kind of always been a
(01:14):
guy who has talked about the process and believing in
the process. What is it with the process now where
you say, Okay, the results maybe haven't been there in
all areas the way you would like, but the conviction
and what you're doing still remains.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Yeah, Nischa, thanks for having me again. You know, really
coming out of the film and starting off on the
defensive side, just proud of the way the guys played
the run game. It was a huge improvement team football,
team defense, fitting gaps, trusting each other, setting edges, the
safety is showing up to make those plays and really
(01:50):
was you know, consistent throughout outside of a couple of
runs that got away from us. You know, flip side
of it was you know, the explosive plays, you know,
particularly in that second quart order where it got away
from us there, you know, and then offensively to start
off with a really solid drive and then after that
to really just slow down and uh, you know, we
face some issues in our run game. We were we
(02:14):
really didn't win first down, and that put us into
some second and long some known past stuff and third
down just wasn't a great day for us, thirty five
percent on the day, and that's an area that we've
been talking about that we got to continue to you know,
to focus and improve upon. And just from an operational standpoint,
getting out of the huddle, getting lined up, things that
just were not clean for us that we really got
(02:34):
to attack and find that, you know, but we found,
you know, some of our young talent. We're able to
make some plays again, so some guys took another step
in terms of just being available and making the plays
and things that we can certainly build off of.
Speaker 5 (02:47):
Coach, have you ever been through a stretch like this,
maybe in high school, college, or in your time as
a pro as far as coaching is concerned, that where
you can draw on the experience there, Have you ever
been in a situation like this.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
In different spots? You know, there have been some you know, difficulties,
certainly last year in Tempa, you know, in the middle
of the season figuring out our identity from an offensive
standpoint and working our way to find really good football.
You know, is tells me that the principles and the
approach of focusing on the fundamentals and execution is the
way to go when you have so many areas, you know,
(03:27):
throughout the football team that need improvement and that need growth.
You know, can I say that I've been a part
of a group like this, No, I have it. It's
been it's been a great challenge, you know, in all
regards and in that respect, you know, from a offense, defense,
and special team standpoint, that's where us as a staff
and as as our team, we've all had to kind
(03:47):
of work through some real challenges this year.
Speaker 6 (03:50):
And where you started was the run defense much improved
having some veteran guys healthy collectively at the same time
they've been in the out of the lineup, but having
Shy Tuttle, Ashawn.
Speaker 7 (03:59):
Robbins and Jadavian Clowney Josie Jewel.
Speaker 6 (04:02):
How much easier does that make that when you've got
guys that just actually know, you know, what they're supposed
to do, assignment football and things like that. As far
as you do have the mix of young players, but
having those core veteran guys that you know you can
just kind of count on for a game like yesterday,
it was.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Great to have those guys out there leading the charge,
you know, and really just playing with great effort and
playing good team football. So I was really excited to
have him back out there.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Coach, when it comes to the quarterback, what we'll determine
who starts Sunday against the Saints.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Yeah, really, we just got to take in all the
information over the next couple of days, you know, to
see where Andy's at and his health, and then we'll
make the best decision.
Speaker 8 (04:41):
You know.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
I'll have something probably more concrete for us on Wednesday,
as we just evaluate Andy and where he's at, and
we'll take it from there.
Speaker 6 (04:51):
Overall, what was your evaluation of Bryce's performance compared to
the first two starts that he had earlier this season
as far as any growth that you saw.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
I thought he played. I thought he was very decisive,
and he made some really nice throws from the pocket,
outside of the pocket, just moving around finding work. So
I was really encouraged by that. And then I think,
you know, Bryce would be the first to tell you,
you know, just from a you know, operational standpoint, you know,
in particularly third down, just getting out of the huddle,
(05:20):
getting guys set, you know, just going through the whole
pre snap operation of getting the protections and the motions
and all those things. That's a place where not just
Bryce but myself getting the calls in earlier, the guy's
getting the information, getting out quickly and lined up, the
whole group of us really can take a step forward,
you know as we keep building.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
Does he have any fail safe as if things are
not going awry that maybe cause a time out or
he changes to an audible to get to a play.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Yes he does, and you know I use the timeout
on one of them. But he certainly has a toolbox
of place.
Speaker 7 (05:54):
You can go to coach.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
What's the benefit for some of the young players who
because of injuries and what have you, who are seeing
reps maybe that they don't see on the field. What's
that benefit long term for their development?
Speaker 4 (06:09):
It's invaluable to be on to be in an NFL
stadium on the field, taking in those live reps, all
the different situations that come up within a game. It's
it's invaluable for these guys to to experience it playing
on the road, playing in a hostile environment, you know,
and just trying to like make it just about football
(06:29):
and execution. And the guys have shown an ability to
make plays in those situations, which I'm really encouraged.
Speaker 5 (06:34):
By coach, Will we say a little bit more of
Cuba and Sata's running the ball this week.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Yeah, that's the plan. You know, the plan is to
continue to you know, advance and be balanced with.
Speaker 9 (06:45):
What we do.
Speaker 6 (06:46):
Aniche was asking about some of the young players and
to focus on one Demani Richardson and Legi and tackles
yesterday got eleven. Seven of those were solo tackles and
we had to really you know, called his name a lot.
And of course Jalen Cocher was another one, so went
on off and one on defense. They're just kind of
your evaluation of their growth as some young players.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
Yeah, it's just a it's a tribute to two guys
who are you know, engaged in the process and growth. Uh,
you know, daily growth, weekly growth. And Demani just kind
of waiting for an opportunity. And he's been really conscientious.
He's been engaged the whole time, taking in the coaching
points in for Demani to get out there and play
good football, show up in the run game, show up
in the past game a little bit and makes a place.
(07:27):
I'm really proud of just the progress and and uh
and Demani taking advantage of this opportunity, and the same
goes for Jalen, you know, to continue to find ways
to make plays in type coverage, to separate at the
top of routes, you know, and uh to really just
you know, provide us a reliable receiver down the field.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
Coach, what is the coaching points for Jackson? Particularly on
that play for the test style, there was a seven
route that was gonna go behind him. He recognized it
and the guy was running a quick stick out into
the flat and they threw the ball to the flat.
He comes off to seven and he gets almost close
to what what's the coaching point for him in that situation?
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Yeah, it's just all guys working together and you got
to do your job. And you know, if we're short
and coverage in one place or another, like the best
thing you can do is just make sure you're you
stay you know, attached to your area and then you
got to rally up and try to make a play.
But we can't try to do each other's job. That's
that trust Eugene, right, is everybody just kind of handling
their responsibilities.
Speaker 9 (08:25):
All right, Coach?
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Before we let you go, it is Halloween weeks, so
on the lighter side of things. I do this every
year and and indulge me, if you will, for the
trick of treaders that ring the doorbell at Casa Canalis.
What kind of candy can they expect?
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Oh, big, king size handy bars, Snickers.
Speaker 10 (08:47):
That's what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
I'm coming up. That's right, that's right.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
He Anice, you know, and Eugene. I just I remember
growing up in inner City LA and Carson, you know,
and it was the you know, it was dumb dumbs.
Speaker 9 (08:59):
And so we would we would do.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
We would go around the dude laps in our neighborhood
and then we all hop in a card and go
head over to Torrents or Palace Verdi's or something and
hit up those neighborhoods and get the full size candy bars.
Speaker 9 (09:13):
Indeed, uh, you know, so we knew, we knew how
to play the game.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
All right.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Now, be honest, what's the last time you had a
candy bar? So you had to think about it.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
I've had a bite size. I've had a bite size
here and there. You know, I try to I gotta
walk by it. Jessica's got a nice bull of treats
for the guys.
Speaker 5 (09:31):
Here in our studio, coach, we got a whole bunch
of sticks.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
It's a little bit of grit training for me to
walk by the candy jar every single time I go
in my office.
Speaker 10 (09:41):
So we got bars and some cracker up in here too.
I'm just letting you.
Speaker 9 (09:46):
Know, have the kids picked out a Halloween costume yet?
Speaker 11 (09:50):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (09:50):
They have a couple.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
They like to kind of recycle some from the past,
and there there's some hand me down things, you know,
but you know, some of the favorites are certainly like
our Harry Potter's are our superhero spider Man, you know,
and uh so I can't even wait to see what
they do. And my son is pretty creative, so sometimes
he kind of just throws together his own deals.
Speaker 10 (10:10):
So will you be walking the kids in the neighborhood, coach.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
I'll be I'll be game planning.
Speaker 10 (10:19):
Okay, there you go.
Speaker 9 (10:20):
We'll be battling that way.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
But I'll certainly kick in for some candy though.
Speaker 6 (10:24):
Maybe maybe at the door again at the door so far,
but hey, enjoy that because you know, beyond football, there's
life and family and kids and stuff.
Speaker 7 (10:31):
So that's some great memories there.
Speaker 9 (10:33):
Thank you, Jim all Right, coach, we appreciate it. And uh,
I'm gonna let the people know.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Kink sized bars at Dave Canals.
Speaker 7 (10:43):
I heard brisket. I heard brisket.
Speaker 10 (10:46):
We got the low down side.
Speaker 9 (10:48):
Thank you, all right, thank you Dave Canals.
Speaker 7 (10:52):
Brisket. Walk up a brisket carving station.
Speaker 10 (10:55):
Oh my god, you gotta be nice.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
I you ever get the there's always one toothbrush?
Speaker 9 (11:05):
You know what?
Speaker 7 (11:05):
I hadn't thought about that. Do you remember that?
Speaker 2 (11:07):
I remember.
Speaker 7 (11:10):
Pennies? Yeah, Penny would give you pennies.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Pennies and the two which at that point you might
I hate Halloween.
Speaker 9 (11:17):
I don't like kids. I don't like everybody that would
give you.
Speaker 5 (11:20):
They would give you a stack of pennies that you
know was at least ten cents or twenty cents.
Speaker 7 (11:25):
Right, I mean it was more than one, but still pennies.
Nobody wants twenty says.
Speaker 10 (11:29):
Back in the day now where I.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Grew up, there used to be it was a dental
hygienist whatever lived a couple of blocks away, given to
what Every year at Halloween they'd hand out a toothbrush.
Speaker 6 (11:42):
It was funny, as I used to think, it was
funny and ironic that some dental offices around the time
of year will give out candy. But I go wait
a minute, that's how they stay in business.
Speaker 9 (11:50):
It's genius, brilliant, right, it is genius. Yeah, good, What
do we get at Eugene's.
Speaker 10 (11:54):
House, mister good bars crackle?
Speaker 9 (11:58):
No, not for you, but you've been stealing from the.
Speaker 5 (12:01):
Uriastic exactly when they come to my crib, I'm taking packages. No, no,
I'm not, but I wanted to some kids come up
with some really good stuff. But no, I'm gonna have
a kick castle whole slew of candy that they can't.
Go ahead and just grab and grab as many as
you want.
Speaker 9 (12:16):
I don't care, zoke.
Speaker 6 (12:17):
I had no say so when if I came home
to that, Sandre had already bought the candy, and I
could already tell the kids that are coming. They're not
either fun sized nor full size. I call medium size.
And it's like the Halloween version of Peeps and sour
Patch kids, and which I realized. She bought all stuff
we don't eat because if there's like chocolate or something
like that, like the ones you were naming like, we
would eat them. Talking, so she about all candies that
(12:38):
we're not interested in. That will give away, so they
will not be touched before anyone comes.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
So how about this? I asked my wife the other day.
I said, Hey, I'm running to the store. I'm stopping
by Target. Do you want me to pick up Halloween candy?
Speaker 3 (12:50):
No?
Speaker 9 (12:50):
I already got it. Oh you did? What did you get?
Speaker 1 (12:55):
Not telling you? Where is it? I'm not telling you?
So I think they figured out. You know, if I
get my hands on it.
Speaker 10 (13:06):
Dude, you're still in the candy.
Speaker 12 (13:07):
You eating a candy?
Speaker 7 (13:09):
Yeah, you're sitting here with three rappers around. What are
you talking about that?
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Agree?
Speaker 9 (13:15):
So it's it's it's been a it's been a goal
fall season. You're on the road.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
It's hard to eat healthy, right, I've been trying to
do my best, and so they said. I kind of
said to my family, I said, yeah, keep that stuff
away from me. And they're taking it way too seriously.
So now I have no idea. I don't no idea
what the hellweed candy is will be a surprise to me?
Speaker 7 (13:34):
Celery sticks?
Speaker 9 (13:35):
Yeah for me? Probably? All right.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Panther Talk, presented by Bosh power Tools, returns after this
on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh Power Tools.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
We've got to celebrate the things that look like us,
the style of football that we want to play. We
got to continue to build on those things, clean up
the things that we're struggling with, and just kind of
take the next step together. And this is a locker
room that's together right now, fighting and battling and scratching
to try to figure it out. Coaching staff as well,
just returning to the locker room, returning to the game planning,
and trying to put our guys in the best situation
(14:09):
to be successful.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Panther Talk continues on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network and.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
A Shroff Eugene Robinson, Jim Zochie Panthers Saints this weekend.
Carolina is sitting at one and seven. Someone's gonna snap
along losing streak this weekend unless the game ends in
a tie. Carolina's lost five in a row. Saints have
lost six in a row. It is not the same
New Orleans team that we saw week one and week two.
They beat the Panthers week one forty seven to ten,
(14:37):
then obliterated Dallas week two, and then the wheels have
fallen off. They've had injuries. We'll get a report from
the Saints from Aaron Summers, who is their team reporter.
Later on, Jim's got his interview with Mike Tolbert. But
for the here and now, for this Panther team, Eugene,
let's start with the quarterback position, because that is, you know,
(14:58):
the pivot point of everything. We went into the game yesterday,
I think all of us were thinking and wondering, what
would Bryce Young look like after sitting for five weeks,
what kind of player would he be? Started strong, five
for five, That first drive took advantage of the turnover,
and then it was you know, eight to nine drives
(15:19):
in a row where the offense really couldn't gain a
whole lot of traction. They get the score late, did
make a couple of throws, but you know, the unfortunate
thing is we're all rooting for him, and we all
kind of want to see that next step. I don't think,
if you're being honest, you can walk away from that
game and say we saw a quarterback that was wholly
(15:43):
different from you know, what we had seen in his
first eighteen career starts.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
There are two plays that come to mind that changes
narrative of what you're describing with Bryce down one is
what leget well ask what both leget the past. That
deep ball that he dropped legat that was huge. It
was monumental. It was monumental for as.
Speaker 9 (16:04):
He should have caught the sun in his eyes.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
Yeah, he should have caught that, and it looks it
just that's monumental for Bryce's confidence. And then he's running
another go route on his left hand side and Bryce
misses him. Those those two plays right there really typifies
that goes man. If I'm Bryce going, man, if I
just get those plays, it's a totally different narrative. We're
(16:27):
not talking about you're talking about maybe a touchdown. You
talk about almost maybe two touchdowns. And so from that standpoint,
it would have changed the complexion of his day in
the game, and it didn't. Instead, he has now this, man,
I can't make a throw and you don't want to
have them had.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
That push back on this though. That's the NFL exactly.
The game comes down to a couple of plays.
Speaker 7 (16:52):
Yep.
Speaker 6 (16:53):
I think the other one where he could have shown
growth and did it, And I agree that you have
to And I think what you're saying too is there
was there was some mild improved. I don't think it
was like substantially different than earlier, but it was somewhat better.
Was the disappointment was again the game that was outcomes
pretty much decided the interception to Cocher in the end
zone right at the pylon, because that's the ball. You know,
as a quarterback, you either throw it so that it
goes out of bounds or your guy high points it
(17:14):
and catches it above the defensive back McMillan who got
the interception there.
Speaker 7 (17:18):
McMillan got the ball because it was underthrown.
Speaker 6 (17:20):
If that ball is thrown properly, that's like you can't
make that mistake that point in the field and just
that's a that's a big swing me as you're having
off the board for you and they get the ball
back from there. So plays like that is like if
he makes that throw, makes that play and that's a
fundamental play where you just know you can't one thing
you can't do is miss low. You can miss wide,
you just you can't miss low. And he underthrew it.
Speaker 5 (17:41):
You know, it's almost like as a free safety, I'm
sitting there going nobody gets behind you. Nobody gets behind you.
If the quarterback scrambles check to see who's the deepest receiver,
and you get to the deepest receiver, nobody gets behind
you because you have to be.
Speaker 10 (17:55):
On every single time.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
If somebody gets behind you, I'm saying that quarterback is
good enough to find that guy and to throw the
ball to beat you on a broken play, improvisational thing,
and so you want to make sure that you stay disciplined.
The same thing for the quarterback. When you have an
open guy, you gotta hit him. You got hit him.
When you have a guy who's beating a guy and
he's underneath, you gotta throw the ball where he can
(18:19):
only catch it. And so when you don't make those plays,
Bryce is sitting there going says, I made that play
a million times. Why am I not making that play?
Why am I not making that play? And what unfortunately
happens and messes with your confidence. Now you think that
you got to get out of that funk, and you
think that you can't make those plays that you should
make because you've been doing them all your life.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
I know this format and talk radio always leans into hyperbole, right,
I don't like make or break, But let's say Andy
Dalton isn't ready for this Sunday and Bryce gets another start.
It's not gonna be make or break for him. He's
a number one overall pick. He will get multiple chances
(19:01):
for the next few years at least, whether it's here,
whether it's somewhere else, whatever, Right, But I do think
it is an opportunity where you have a Saints team
that is depleted, they've lost six in a row. Derek
Carr will see if he comes back. But that's the
other side of the ball. Marshaun Lattimore got hurt in
(19:24):
the game yesterday. This is a Saints team that has
banged up. It's a team that's not playing well. It
is a coach who may not make it through the season.
There's a lot of angst and turmoil surrounding that franchise
right now.
Speaker 9 (19:38):
And if you're.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
Bryce Young, this could be one of your better opportunities
to take that next step as a Carolina Panther.
Speaker 6 (19:48):
And this is a subplot to what you're going after.
But Saints lose this game, I think they don't have
their head coach after I'm with you, I agree, and
then you lose to the Panthers. I think this is
like Dennis Allen's coaching for his career in this one,
so we'll see full I'm sure he wants Derek Carr
out there and careful what you wish for a right
people that didn't want Derek Carr. And then you get
Spencer Ratler, who may in time be something. But yeah,
(20:09):
I think if if Bryce can come out and just play,
play solid and be efficient, I mean, he just has
to show improvement. And I miss Green Bay Bryce. Remember
Green Bay Bryce from last year. That was a confident
guy that got into a rhythm. And I know it
wasn't the best defense in the league compared to especially
what Denver's rolling without there, but I still think, Eugene,
we need to see something more close to that to
(20:29):
feel like, Okay, now I can see what we saw
coming out of Alabama a little bit, and it doesn't.
Speaker 5 (20:33):
Help much when you look and see Daniels having a
great season, Caleb, when you look at your peers for
the guys who just when you came out and the
guys who are balling right now and bo Dix, when
you look at your peers, you go like this, hold up,
I'm better at this guy. I'm better than this guy.
I'm better than this guy we saw. Think about that
and it's not materializing. It messes with your mind, it does.
(20:55):
I think Bryce is a good quarterback, and I think
there's some redemption. Here's a chance you can go ahead
and be redeemed. This team is struggling. You got it, boy.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
The Saints in their previous four games against Kansas City
gave up four hundred and sixty yards wow. Against the Buccaneers,
five ninety four against the Broncos, who we saw on Sunday,
not world beaters on offense, three eighty nine against the
Chargers we saw them earlier in the year. Again, not
world beaters on offense. They got Justin Herbert. Not a
(21:26):
whole lot outside of that three seventy eight. You can
move the ball right, you can do some things against
that defense, and there might be potential to get Adam
thieling back, maybe even Deontay Johnson.
Speaker 5 (21:39):
Bryce, this is Kate Taylor made for you. You gotta
show up, you gotta step up, and I will be
salivating trying to get in the field to throw the ball.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
All right.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
We got Mike Tolbert and his conversation with Jim Zochi
coming up, and we still have Aaron Summers to preview
this weekend's game against the New Orleans Saints. It's Panther
Talk presented by Bosh power To on the Carolina Panthers
Radio network.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh Power Tools pullback.
Speaker 6 (22:09):
Mike Tolbert played his college football down the road to
Coastal Carolina. He then played five of his ten NFL
seasons with the Panthers, three times a Pro Bowl player,
We catch up with one of the all time fan
favorites who continues to make Charlotte his home.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
Thirty seasons of Panther football. A celebration of the players, coaches,
and other key figures who've contributed to the organizational success.
Speaker 6 (22:33):
All right, catch up with the great Mike Tobert, our
all time favorite Panthers fullback broadcast partner from past times. Mike,
with this group of thirty years of Panthers football, what's
it like with this gathering of different generations of great
Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 12 (22:50):
I mean it's fun, you know, getting able to just
to sit down and break bread with guys that you
really that, you know what, you haven't spent a lot
of time with, you know, getting to speak with right,
Bline and Wesley, you know, I know, Al, I know Woruk,
you know. But being able to talk to guys that
you don't get to talk to on regular it's a
good time, you know what I'm saying. Almost brings back
that locker room feel just in there cutting up.
Speaker 7 (23:13):
So of course, you know, I've been here since the beginning.
Speaker 6 (23:15):
It's cool to see generations now that this organization goes
back that par that it's not I mean, it's young
compared to some teams, but it's got a real history
to it now.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Oh yeah, for sure.
Speaker 12 (23:24):
I mean, you know, we got what two Super Bowl
appearances in the history of the franchise, and we got
guys from both teams here. You know, we got guys
that was on the first team that's here, you know.
So being able to you know, pick the brains of
them and see how was it like in two thousand
and three, what was it like? My bad, what was
it like in ninety five, ninety six? You know what
(23:45):
I'm saying, Like it's just it's nostalgic. But at the
same time, it's fun to be right and it's fun
to be invited, you know what I'm saying. You know,
you get some teams that they may forget about the
people that's been became before. But the fact that Jeremy
and the Legens committee here do a good job of
keeping us involved and they and then they want.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Us involved, and you know, so it's fun to be
able to be involved, to still be wanting well.
Speaker 7 (24:14):
You absolutely are.
Speaker 6 (24:15):
And you know you mentioned there's been two Super Bowls.
Not everybody here has been on those teams. Three in
twenty fifteen. What's what's it like to be a part
of a special part of this history of that was
like a really honestly the best season of Panthers football.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
Well, I mean, it was just to be a part
of it was a special thing.
Speaker 12 (24:33):
That's probably the most fun I've had playing football in
my life.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
You know. I learned earlier.
Speaker 12 (24:39):
That that was the best record that the team is
a team Panthers team has ever had, which I thought
it was, but to get confirmation what was good.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
But then just.
Speaker 12 (24:51):
Talking with Roman and Luke and Mario and Trey, you know,
as we were talking about that season, you know, the
little things that slip your mind, like how we were
in the locker room, the games we played, the freestyle Fridays,
you know how loose we were. You know what I'm saying,
(25:11):
How I used to mock players and coaches at practice
on Saturday, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
So those little things made that season special.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
But you look back at that season with special but
there's a lot of frustration obviously about how the game went,
and especially on the offensive side. You look back and
think back about that what just didn't click on that
particular day as far as especially the offense couldn't going well.
Speaker 12 (25:36):
I mean, first of all, we got to get credit
to Denver. They had a really good defense. I think
top one or two defense in the league that year.
You know, we were one of the top defenses, but
also we had a top offense.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
You know.
Speaker 12 (25:48):
A lot of things didn't work, you know what I'm
saying that day. You know, the game plan we had
we just didn't execute. You know, I mean, hell, I
fumbled in the Super Bowl. You know what I mean,
we gave you never do that right, you know what
I'm saying, Like we gave up, we gave up sacks,
we gave up touchdowns, we fumbled, like we just played
(26:09):
uncharacteristic and we still had a chance to win.
Speaker 2 (26:12):
In fact, the game was close that day end. You know,
we just couldn't break that barrier.
Speaker 12 (26:17):
You know, Unfortunately for everybody is here tonight, they're retired,
so they can't go get a Super Bowl. But we're
rooting for our Panthers here and see where we go.
Speaker 6 (26:28):
You know, when the franchise again has had Super Bowls
that also had one win and two win seasons and
things like that, what's the mentality that it takes and
patience maybe that it takes to get back to that
level once again.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
Well, I think it's vision.
Speaker 12 (26:42):
You know, that's from that comes from the top down,
you know, from temper down.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
To day and today and envisioning or given that vision
to the players.
Speaker 12 (26:54):
You know, it could be a three year vision, it
could be a five year vision. It could be something
that we feel like we could compete this year.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
You never know. I mean, there could be a rebuild,
it could be a special season. But you have to.
Speaker 12 (27:05):
Play every down, every play. You gotta go into every
game with the belief that you can win. You know,
that's how we were in twenty fifteen, Like we had
no expectations, you know what I'm saying. In twenty fifteen,
we lost our first round draft pick six to seven
receiver in training count. You know what I'm saying, Like
Ted again is a hell of a football player. He
(27:27):
was our number one receiver that year because Kevin went down.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
You know what I'm saying. When Ted is the fastest
guy I've ever.
Speaker 12 (27:34):
Been around, you know what I'm saying, But he's never
been touted as that number one guy, which I think
he can do it.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
But you know what I'm saying, it's one of those
things where you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 12 (27:44):
Our expectations went from middle of the road to below
that because we lost him. But at the end of
that year, we had what defensive Player of the Year
in Luke, We had ten to eleven Pro Bowlers, few
All pros League MVP. You know I'm saying, because we
believe every game. We went out Game one one, went out,
(28:04):
Game two, one, went out, Game three one, we went
to Seattle, game four, fall back one.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
So everybody started to believe. You know what I'm saying,
So believe in in the games.
Speaker 12 (28:15):
You know what I'm saying. One at a time, you
know what I'm saying. Just try to stack those wins.

The Panthers welcome the Saints to Bank of America Stadium
This Sunday. New Orleans beat Carolina forty seven to ten.
Week one. They beat Dallas the following week forty four nineteen.
We started going, hey, the Saints team might be pretty good.
They've lost six in a row since then and things
have not gone well. We're gonna find out why. Let's
(31:43):
bring in Aaron Summer. She covers the Saints for Saints
dot Com. Aaron, thanks for coming on from two and
o to two and six.
Speaker 9 (31:52):
What happened?
Speaker 16 (31:54):
Yeah, thanks, Peel a lot differently now here in New Orleans.
You're You're not wrong there. It's been a lot due
to injuries. I think that's where things started to fall apart,
we lost our center Eric McCoy, kind of a veteran
leader on the team, and he was really the one
who the offense ran through, and he went down early
(32:16):
in that third game against the Eagles and has not
returned yet from there. Last week, we had seven starters
of eleven on the starting you know, either side from
day one that were out, So that's a lot to
have to make up for. And we got a lot
(32:39):
of those players back last week, but without quarterback Derek
Carr playing, who's been out for three weeks now, it's
looked really tough to get the offense moving at all.
There has really been a lack of a run game,
and they've been forced into a lot of just obvious
past situations and been unable to deliver. You spend a
(33:01):
game without wide receiver Chris Alave due to concussion, and
then now wide receiver receives to heat is out for
the year and on ir with an injury to his knee,
so you have only really one threat as a receiver
and it's been tough for him. So that the Saints
were able to bring in Marquez Valdis Scantling last week.
(33:23):
He was a healthy scratch this past week and is
looking to go this weekend against the Panthers after getting
another week under his belt learning the offense. It's been
kind of a lot just of the injury bug that's
really added to the saints inability to be productive there offensively,
and it's put a lot of pressure on the defense
(33:45):
and one of the.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
Bread and butterets. I always thought what the Saints has
always been the run. I think they throw the ball well,
but there's something special about Kamarat the way he runs.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
Is it not?
Speaker 5 (33:57):
The coaches I did to get back to trying to
get to a stronger run again. Since there's so much
uncertainty in the receiving game.
Speaker 16 (34:05):
They absolutely want to establish that run game. It's everything
that this Clint Kubiak offense is predicated off of. However,
when you only have Alvin Kamara as you're back, and
in Taysom Hill he's missed five of the last seven
games with injury, you really are putting a lot on
one person. The offensive line has been depleted. We were
(34:30):
out our center. We've gone through four different centers so
far this season, without the left guard and without the
right guard for the majority of the year that had
started the season with you, so it was really difficult
for the line to establish, help establish a run game,
create hold to block, and then you without Taysom Hill.
(34:51):
He is a huge blocker in that scheme to get
things going in your downhill runner. So it's been a
lot that's been on Alvin Mary's shoulders and you got
to hand it to him because he's played with broken
ribs and a broken hand and has not missed a game.
He's doing everything that he can. But yeah, they definitely
(35:12):
need that one two punch and having take some hill
back last week did help. But the line is just
it was really struggling trying to get things going.
Speaker 7 (35:23):
Aeron.
Speaker 6 (35:24):
If I had just tuned in, I would thought I
was listening to Panther Talk now Saints talk, so sounds
very similar to what we're going through here. My question
is all about the quarterback play. So what is the
prognosis for this week as far as you know, I know,
usually at least Wednesday before you have any idea, But
Derek Carr, is it possible he could come back this week?
And then for the South Carolina fans out there, obviously
not the results early on in his career for Spencer
(35:45):
Ratley watsee, But just from the eyeball test, are you
guys seeing things that are positive in his play that
moving forward as he gets more experienced, that he might
be something.
Speaker 16 (35:55):
Yeah. Absolutely. Quarterback Spencer Ratler was thrown into his first
NFL snap as a starter without a lot of players
on that line in front of him to help protect him,
and it was a tough situation. He didn't have a
lot of offensive weapons. They really like his ability to
use his legs and the deep ball that he has
(36:15):
in his arsenal. I mean, he can definitely throw it
very far, but he definitely struggled at times over the
last three games as the starter. In the fact, in
the last game he did get pulled late. Dad Kner
came in his place for the end of the third quarter.
But even today, head coach Dennis Allen said that they
really really like Spencer Ratler as a young developmental quarterback.
(36:39):
They think he has a bright future here. He just
needs a little bit more time to develop. They went
with him for a reason behind quarterback Derek Carr, because
they do feel like he has a little bit different ability,
especially being a little more mobile, and liked the opportunity
that they had there to see what he got and
(37:01):
unfortunately didn't quite work out this early, But again, I
think there is a lot there that he'll be able
to do down the line. As far as quarterback, Derek
Cargoes edith throw today, had another throw in session and
is supposed to practice for the first time Wednesday since
his oblique injury three weeks ago, and it is looking
and expected that he is going to start and play
(37:22):
on Sunday against the Panthers.
Speaker 1 (37:23):
We're talking with Aaron Summers, who covers the New Orleans Saints. Aaron,
on the defensive side of the ball. I saw the
Marshawn Lattimore injury over the weekend, but this is a
defense that the last four or five weeks on average,
has been given up more than four hundred yards per game.
How do you explain what's happened defensively since the first
two weeks.
Speaker 16 (37:45):
It's been the explosive place. They've absolutely killed the Saints defensively.
A lot of it was either due to penalties, whether
it was pass interference or flags and penalties. As far
the line that we're giving these big chunk plays to
the opposition and then their inability to tackle, they've had
(38:07):
a really hard time getting guys down and players are
getting into the secondary and they're picking up a lot
of yards that way. So they really needed to up
the offense of the defensive line play and create more
pressure up front. I think they were able to do
that last weekend against the Chargers. For the majority of
(38:27):
the game, they held the running backs to just seventy
eight yards justin Herbert was able to get go in
a little bit, which increased the rushing yards total and
made it look a little bit worse than it was.
But being able to at least limit the ground game
from the backs is an improvement. And they're going to
have to figure out these big explosive plays that they
(38:51):
keep allowing. They work so hard and then they get
stuck with this big play and they're on the field
for so long because of it, and the offense isn't
helping them out either, because the offense can't establish drives
of their own, which is wearing the defense down as
the game goes. So hopefully we can get some rhythm
back defensive or offensively with quarterback Derek Carr coming into
(39:13):
game this weekend, and that'll take some of the pressure
off of the defense. To perform, so.
Speaker 1 (39:18):
Well, well, maybe it's a get right game for the Panthers.
Saints have a lot going on. Aaron Summers joining us,
Aaron will see you this weekend.
Speaker 9 (39:27):
Thank you.
Speaker 12 (39:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 16 (39:29):
No, I know both of these teams need to win badly,
and I know both of them are going to be
hungry coming in there. We don't play the best sometimes,
Aaron Charlotte. So we'll see how this one goes.
Speaker 1 (39:38):
We will that game one PM on Sunday. Again, Aaron Summers,
thank you. She covers the New Orleans Saints. We will
return on Panther Talk here on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
Is Panther Talk please handed by Bosh power Tools before.
Speaker 1 (39:57):
We go here on Panther Talk, or condolences to the
family of longtime Cleveland Brown's play by play announcer Jim Donovan.
And if you caught any of the viral locker room moment,
it was a nice moment with the head coach kind
of giving the game ball to the late Jim Donovan,
who passed away recently from a long battle cancer. Jym,
(40:18):
I know you're an Ohio guy. You grew up a
Browns fan. Well, he wasn't the voice of your childhood.
Certainly he meant a lot to that community.
Speaker 7 (40:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (40:26):
In fact, Nev Chandler was and he also died of
cancer many years ago.
Speaker 7 (40:29):
But did Jim Donovan.
Speaker 6 (40:31):
Like Nev Chandler, they were local TV anchors, sports anchors
and also the play by play guy of the team,
and so he had decades in that area being a
Cleveland guy. So he definitely was a big fabric of
the voice of the team kind of setting there and
even battling cancer off and I've been in and out
of the booth the past couple of years fighting cancer.
Speaker 7 (40:50):
Came back last.
Speaker 6 (40:51):
Year and obviously I got to the point where this
year they announced off season late in the offseason Andrew
Siciliano from the NFL Network, who's a Cleveland guy, would
be the play by play guy. So sad, way too young,
being in the sixties that he passed away, but it
was I'm glad you brought it up, and I thought
it was nice on a day where they honored him
on the screen there that the Browns played well and
won late, and it kind of adds to the uh,
(41:14):
you know, just trying to have a celebration of life.
Speaker 7 (41:16):
As far as how the day went out.
Speaker 5 (41:17):
Overall, I didn't really know him, But one thing I
could tell about broadcasting is fact, when you're in somebody's
home every single week, they become a part of your family,
and they then you think about them more so, and
they think that they know you.
Speaker 10 (41:31):
A lot of people that.
Speaker 5 (41:31):
They know you and they know you a niche because
you're in there, you're in the air all the time,
and they become your family members. And so that's probably
exactly what's probably happened to Madonovan has so many family
members who by the by the airwaves have tuned in
and become part of the family.
Speaker 6 (41:47):
And you got such a unique perspective because every week
at football season especially, you're doing a national game, but
then you're doing the local team, and it's such a
completely different experience.
Speaker 1 (41:56):
Right, completely right one where you know there's a level
of detachment. You're not invested in the outcome. You're invested
in drama and a close game and hopefully one that
comes out to the wire, and then once that's over,
you kind of put it away and then you move
on to the next week's game. And I remember, I'll
(42:20):
be honest, with the first game that we played first
game I did for the Panthers playing the Browns here
at home, and I remember telling my wife, I said,
want to see them win, want to see them do well.
I don't want to take it home with me win
or lose. Failed miserably. Every week I come home through
the door, and whether the Panthers won or they lost,
(42:43):
she knows the minute I walked in, whether she watched
the game or not. And it's hard not to be
emotionally invested. And I think again, when we say it
on the air when the team's doing well, people hear
it in our voices. There is genuine excitement in the
same token. When there's disappointment or frustration. You probably we
get some of that too. You live it, you breathe it.
(43:03):
You see these people at Harris Theeter, you see these
folks around town wherever you go. They're asking you you
got nothing? So it does mean something more.
Speaker 10 (43:15):
Absolutely does it means a lot to you.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
That is our show for today, the Saints this week,
the Giants in Munich the following week.
