Speaker 1 (00:00):
The following is an exclusive presentation of the Carolina Panthers
and the National Football League Panthertell and Thirton and Thirton.
This is Panther Talk, presented by Bosh Power Tools on
the Carolina Panthers Radio network.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
I'm sure you've all heard by now our decision to
play Andy Dalton as we go into Vos Vegas and
play the Raiders. Sitting Bryce down here after yesterday, I
just went home, watched the film, had some conversations with
coaches with Dan Brandt, so had to gather a lot
of information through this morning and made that decision after

(00:39):
looking at it, that this is the best decision for
our group, for our team going forward.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
And now, along with Jim Zochi and Eugene Robinson, here's
a Niche Shruff with Panther Talk live from the Panthers
broadcast facility at Bank of America Stereo.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
That was Dave can Alice earlier this afternoon at his
press conference announcing the big news of the day. Andy
Dalton will get the start this Sunday against the Raiders
in Las Vegas. And now for more context and for
more on the decision, let's bring in the head coach
of the Carolina Panthers, Dave Canalis coach, Can you walk
us through the process of how that decision was made?

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yeah, niece, thanks for having me so, you know, just
shortly after the game. You know, everything always goes back
to the film, looking at looking at how we played,
the things that we need to improve upon, the different focuses,
you know, with our third down situations, our past game,
all the things.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Just taking all of it into consideration.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
And really realizing that Andy gives us the best chance
going forward to have success as a team and coach.

Speaker 5 (01:54):
With that, you bring in a lot of experience with
Andy Dalton, fourteen years in this league, three times a
Pro Bowl player, He's been a good teammate obviously during
his time here as well. What have you learned about
Andy Dalton during your time here that you've spent with
him so far?

Speaker 4 (02:09):
Well, speak stuff. Just love the way that he attacks
it every day.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Uh, it works, trust, find done, relentless pursuit, grow, Uh,
all things, you know, the conversations and all that, of course,
as you would as you would expect from a guy
who's played so long.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
You know, just all that stuff is fantastic.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
So I'm just I'm excited to give him this opportunity, uh,
to step back in there and to and to continue
to just build as we go forward.

Speaker 6 (02:41):
Coach i Al was asked this question about Bryce's confidence, and
I said, one way you can get a guy's confidence
back is that you show them a lot of plays
of what they've done extremely well, so they can remember
how good they are and not believe just about uh
the current future, the crow status. And so I'm wondering

(03:02):
what will be Bryce's protocol. How would you handle this
now that he is down? Will he do more scout
team stuff that to do?

Speaker 4 (03:10):
Uh?

Speaker 6 (03:10):
What would he do to get back to get himself
back into those good graces and plan as well as good.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Yeah, certainly just expect that he would come to work
every day just like he's been and work hard, dive
into our concepts.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
As you know, we'll be continuing to.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Grow our systems and too to execute him and really
just for him to have this time to you know,
to really hone in on his craft and continue to
grow from all these experiences.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Coach, is there anything that you feel Andy brings to
the table, brings to the offense that that was missing.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Honestly, I'm just excited for Andy to just get in
there and to uh to give us the chance as
a football team to to con to play the type football.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
That went too.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
You know, I think that we had eight times we
were in thirdy or less because there was an efficient
run game. So you pair that up with more efficiency
in the past game with third downs, some second and
long some things like that. Just looking for him to
continue to schedule and play the type of football that
we're looking forward to.

Speaker 5 (04:20):
And Adisha asked you and you answered about how you
guys came to the decision. How did you relay that
to the rest of the team. Obviously you to speak
to the two quarterbacks, but how was that kind of
distributed as far as getting the information out to all
the Panther players.

Speaker 4 (04:33):
I spoke to the quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
I went to each of the individual meetings as we
were watching film, grading the film from the day before,
and I just told them what we were going to do,
ask them support, and just kind of let the guys
know that my dedication is to do the best thing
for the Panthers as a football team. And that was

(04:54):
what was communicated to the team because, as I've told
you all we're evaluating everything. We're looking at all of
our processes, we're looking at our players, and we're demanding
a standard of practice, a standard of play from our group.
And so I just challenge the guys with that that
this is another step out of respect for everybody that's

(05:15):
involved and giving Andy a chance to go in there.
I feel like that give us our best chance to
be successful.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
Coach.

Speaker 6 (05:22):
I've always been a third down stat guy, getting on
and off the field, whether it's offensive defensively. I know
what you guys are one for twelve on the office
side of the ball, but I want to constenterate on
the defensive side of the ball at nine for sixteen,
not where you guys want to be having a hard

(05:42):
time to stop the run. Did you think more so
about hey, let's go more eight man front all the
way to try to stop this run and we're and
maybe do some mandamental in the outside. What was the
thought in there? Because I thought the team gave us
some things that they're not customarily giving up.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah, it's about playing team football, team tackling guys, having
the discipline to stay in their gaps, set edges, fit
in where you're.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Supposed to fit.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
In and I think this is a just again a
product of guys just learning how to play together. We
certainly have to just continue to grow in our concepts,
get the communication out the way we need it to
and as issues come up, as people try to attack
our defense, as the issues come up, we work through

(06:33):
those things and we just keep tightening it up and
we will continue to get better with our.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Football from a fundamental standpoint on both sides.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Coach, one last thing, just on the quarterback change. Folks
will speculate, right, I'm just wondering from your standpoint, do
you see this as a permanent move or is there
still a pathway back for Bryce.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Really just have to focus on one game at a
time and the focus on the Raiders this week, just
taking all the information and the focus is to get
Andy the valuable reps he needs with this first group,
which he's had some exposure throughout camp, you know, just
in the rotation of things. But that's really the focus
right now. A niche is just to make sure that

(07:21):
we're game ready on Sunday so that we can go
out and play.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
The type of football that I know we're capable of playing.

Speaker 6 (07:27):
Coach, any chance of maybe even morphing into a four
to three defense as opposed to that at three four.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
We have our core concepts we believe in. We believe
that if we play with the right effort and discipline
with our concepts, a defense that I highly respect, I
believe that we'll find success as we continue to just
get better at the little things and really just stick
to our core principles and just play them well and
play hard and coach.

Speaker 5 (07:54):
Last thing will let you go. As you mentioned the
Raiders this week on the road at Las Vegas, they
just had a fourth quarter back win against the Baltimore
Ravens early in the week. But your initial look at
the Raiders and what do you see about them on
tape so far?

Speaker 4 (08:08):
Yeah, just another great challenge.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
You know, they have some players that play physical upfront,
great effort, you know Max Crosby certainly one of the
premier players in this league, and a defense that flies
around and has.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
An aggressive mentality.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
You know, offensively, just the way that they're balanced with
their attack, you know, some of the different run types
that they throw at people. And then just you know
DeVante Adams, you know, got to understand where he's at
at all times and how they're trying.

Speaker 4 (08:33):
To use him.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
But again, I just see a really gritty group that's
taken on the personality of the coach and a great
challenge for us again this week.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
All right, coach Dave Kanalis, head coach at the Carolina Panthers, coach,
appreciate you coming on you coach.

Speaker 4 (08:48):
Thanks guys.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
There he is Dave Canalis again. The big news today
Andy Dalton named the starter for Sunday's game against the Raiders.
It means Bryce Young, the number one pick from a
year ago, heads to the bench. And I think the
reality Jim, that we've now seen not just the two

(09:10):
games this season, but really over the last ten to
eleven games of last season as well. Bryce Young just
didn't seem to be progressing. And you watch the body
language this year, the old line this past week, four

(09:31):
pressures allowed on twenty nine dropbacks. That was the lowest
rate in the NFL amongst every team that played. We're
seeing receivers get open, and you do wonder about the confidence.
You watched the tape at Alabama, you see a different player.
I think we're all rooting for Bryce long term hopefully

(09:54):
can come out of this, whether it's here, whatever, happens,
but we're all rooting for him long term. But I
give Dave Canalis a lot of credit because this is
a tough decision to make this early into your coaching tenure.
But I do think it's the right one.

Speaker 5 (10:11):
Now, I agree, and I think we talked about on
the post game show yesterday to a little bit. You know,
this is the highest level of football. This is pro football.
So this is not, you know, something you do in
addition to being a student or something like that.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
This is this is a.

Speaker 5 (10:23):
Job, and you're paid well, and there's a million eyeballs
on it. They're scrutiny.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Students are paid well too now these days.

Speaker 5 (10:28):
Well that is true, and some some stay in school
because you're gonna get more than they would if they
turn pro. But this, this is the final destination. Is say,
it's the highest level of what it is, and it is.
It still gets back to it's a pass failed business
and it is the business of winning football games. And
you owe it, I think, Eugene two, to the everybody
that practices. You do want to develop an important position,

(10:50):
but you also owe it to the guys. Going back
to the spring football, whether they're blocking, if they're on
defense or special teams, whatever part they will have in
the offense and so forth that they're practicing and preparing
all week two. That just to see what do you
have with everybody and to give everybody the best chance
to win. And again, you could table this for now
and come back to it. To Aniche's question earlier, it

(11:11):
doesn't mean it's everybody. He's twenty three years old. He's
probably gonna have many opportunities down the road, but for
now and in this moment, it's a regression. And when
you throw for eighty four yards, and to Aniche's point,
when you look at the grading out of the pass
blocking from yesterday, you kind of have to say, Okay,
this is a big party, probably the biggest part right
now that needs to be adjusted for the team to

(11:32):
have offensive success.

Speaker 6 (11:33):
And then this is something that's wrong when you say,
like when I'm benching you, you're sitting on a bench,
there's an education process that happens on the bench that
you can't do as a starter. You get a chance
to watch, you get a chance to see things, you
get a chance to go. Like I was talking about
the scout team. When you do the scout team, you're
gonna be running the number one offense of the other
team or defensive the other team, and you're going to

(11:55):
gets the best player.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
At that time.

Speaker 6 (11:58):
That's time when I was always on the Scout team,
I was always trying to show out because if I
can beat my guys who they already scripted against me,
that means I'm doing really, really well, and that means
I'm gonna progress. And so when looking at the Scout team,
it's like, Hey, I want Bryce to be playing Scout Team,
and I want them to fit the ball in when
they're doing against the defense of what the Raiders is

(12:19):
gonna go ahead and run because they already set it
up based on script for the defense to beat the
offense at that occasion or they want to see. And
so if he can go ahead and start really getting
off the Scout team, I'm telling you, your confidence goes
through the roof, because like when you get a pick interception,
Papa fumble on Scout, I guess the number one guys
when you're not supposed to do it. That's a big thing.

(12:41):
And so that asks to was confidence and that's what
I'm hoping about. That's what I was alluding to. What
coach Canalis, you know.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
And the other part of this too is what happens
inside the locker room. And one thing that you have
to realize is that you know, you ask a player,
they're not gonna reveal that. A coach, they're not gonna
reveal that, nor should they or should they. You're gonna
protect the sanctity of the watch. But having talked to
guys who've been in that situation, who've been around a

(13:10):
so called quarterback controversy, Eugene, you've been in that locker room.
That is something that guys talk about. And when the
starter struggles and you have not just another rookie backup,
but a proven veteran, capable former pro bowler like an
Andy Dalton, human nature tells you that chatter is natural.

Speaker 6 (13:33):
Yeah, And to Joke's point is that you don't want
to lose the locker room because if a guy is
not if he's struggling, you would take a guy out
at any other position if the guy's struggling. And so
you do that because you don't want to lose the
locker room and you want to be got in fair
And it's to your point, it's football. You got to
go ahead and show up and not show up. That's
that's part of the deal. So I totally get it.

(13:54):
It's not a bad thing Bryce to go ahead and
sit on the bench and go ahead and watch. There's
an education process that happens. Did you get educated while
you're sitting there?

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Success sometimes is not laint, linear failure isn't always final
or fatal. But for now, Andy Dalton is the guy.
Is the Panthers head to Las Vegas this weekend. Still
to come, we'll hear from Panthers legend at Roman Harper,
who sat down with Jim Zochi, and Raiders play by
play man Jason Horowitz will give us the low down

(14:23):
on Vegas All that ahead on Panther Talk presented by
Bosh power Tools Here on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh power Tools.

Speaker 6 (14:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (14:37):
I'm really excited for this opportunity. You know, when I
came here, I wasn't sure if I was gonna get
another opportunity to start again, and so I'm I'm really
looking forward to it. I'm excited about what's what's ahead.
And you know, it's a tough situation.

Speaker 8 (14:54):
I've been on both sides of it, and I definitely
wasn't expecting it, but when he told me, it's like
one of those dealers, It's like, Okay, this is one
thing I've been praying for, another opportunity, and I've got
it now.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Panther Talk continues on the Carolina Panthers Radio network.

Speaker 3 (15:14):
Red Rifle Red Rifle. Andy Dalton named the starter for
Week three against the Vegas Raiders. That game is Sunday four,
five Eastern time. And all right, let's talk about how
Andy Dalton impacts this offense. A couple areas where the
Panthers have struggled early. On one, Eugene, you brought up

(15:34):
third down. Bryce Young in his two starts this season
on third down, third and fourth downs, four for thirteen,
passing nineteen yards, one interception. The other area extending the field,
throwing downfield, softening up this defense a little bit. Bryce
was just five for fifteen on passes of more than

(15:55):
ten yards downfield, no touchdowns, three picks through the first
couple of gamess. Andy Dalton, the one starting made for
the Panthers last year against Seattle through for three sixty one.
That's a game. Frankly, the Panthers would have won if
not for the dozen penalties I think eight or nine four.
The crowd, they couldn't handle that, and and the offensive

(16:16):
line made a lot of pres andat penalties probably win
that game if not for those. Andy Dalton's a guy
we know he can stretch the field. He's seen every
defense that you can possibly throw at him, which would
make you think we should see an uptick on third
down and the vertical passing game.

Speaker 6 (16:37):
You know, it's like that, you know you can have
the shiny new coin to go ahead, But this is
about a guy who has experienced and a guy who's
been in the trenches and a guy who's led teams
uh to have success. And just the statue of having
Andy Dalton back there. I thought it was a great
pick if we picked him up anyway, but just to
have him back there and knowing that he can come

(16:58):
in a game and teach you something, and that you
that you can't learn what unless you're watching the guy,
unless you're watching a Brett fav unless you're watching the
Aaron Rodgers. Jordan Love. I told Jordan Love the same thing.
I said, Jordan, watch Aaron Rodgers. All you got to
do is what he's gonna teach you so much about
football that it's gonna be a masterclass. Just watch him, dude,

(17:18):
don't try to go ahead and compete with him right now.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
Just learn Steve Young, watching Steve absolutely, and so Aaron
Rodgers from far up to your point.

Speaker 6 (17:26):
Andy Dalton, I think, comes in and I know he's
gonna be able to run the office because he's seen
so many different defenses, all the little nuanced stuff that
Bryce is missing. Andy Dalton knows all right. So I
like the fact that bring him in. I thought maybe
four games for Bryce, but bring him in right now,
and Coach Canalis, I gotta commend you. I think that's

(17:49):
I think that's the right move. Bring him in so
that he can learn. Let Bryce learning in this guy
who I know has a strong arm, but who makes
really good decisions, very very good decisions. And you referenced
that game he had a three hundred plus yards. I'm
telling you, dude, that's not a bad thing. It's not bad.
Get Andy in there.

Speaker 5 (18:08):
And I think, again, it wasn't like it was just
even staying the same. It was somehow getting worse. And
when you get down to like eighty four yards and
some of the statue, guys just already threw out there.
The biggest pass play was a twelve yard pass play
to Tommy Tremble no day. So it's like at some point,
so it's not even just like staying the same, it's
actually regressing and you really have to stop it. And

(18:28):
I think you know, with Andy Dalton going in there,
you can hear him in the one SoundBite he leads
not only with his play I would think out there,
but also the fact that he's got a warm heart,
he's got a big percise, a team oriented guy. And
there were some people saying yesterday at halftime, because we're
in the media areas and all that, like, you know,
bring him in now. I was like, no, let's not
bring him in twenty to nothing. It's like bringing him

(18:49):
into the one yard line and say, going ninety nine
yards this way. You're doing it the right way. You're
telling everybody on Monday you practice this week. Yes, you
run the same system overall, but there are nuances to
what each quarterback runs, what tailors to their needs. To
Niche's point about, this will open up more in the
deep passing game that you probably wouldn't game plan for originally,
so it give you a whole week, the kind of
tailor of the offense to what suits Andy the best

(19:11):
in whatever input he'll have into that.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
And the optics of it. Really again in what has
become a passing league. Even though you know the running
numbers are up across the NFL this year, eight of
the last nine games the Panthers played they did not
have a passing touchdown. The exception was that game against
Green Bay late last season. Part of the issue has

(19:35):
been the way they've started. I was crunching the numbers
before our show. Two games this year, first half scoring
marchin fifty to three. You look at the first half
scoring margin from the previous eight games last year six
nine to nothing, twenty three tens, seven to three, fourteen
to three, seven three, seventeen to three, seventeen three. So

(19:57):
in your last ten games won for half offensive touchdown
and you know, it always feels like we've been playing
catch up right in these games, and that makes you
one dimensional, and that dimension has not been the offense's strength.
To me, Dalton's gonna bring more balance, He's gonna help

(20:19):
the run game, He's gonna help get you into the
right calls, the right checks, the decision making, just the experience.
If he's starting these next four or five weeks, could
he have a game where he looks his age yet?

Speaker 8 (20:34):
Maybe?

Speaker 3 (20:35):
And but I just think right now, it gives this
team a better chance of winning. And to me, it's
third downs, it's getting off to a good start, and
it's it's being less predictable with a quarterback who might
be able to do more.

Speaker 6 (20:49):
Right now, two ahead, ten carries for sixty four, yeah, six.
If Dalton's gonna have any success, it's gonna be predicated
upon being able to run the ball. And as he's
able to run the ball, I bet you he's gonna
be able to stress the field, stress the ball down
the field and not have the ball go out laterally screens,
tunnel screens, that type of thing, but really stress stresses

(21:11):
the field. Seven rows, deep digs that go row, That's
what's That's one thing that's missing. But it's also missing
because we're not consistently running the ball.

Speaker 5 (21:24):
It's it adds a lot of juice to this game.
I'm just gonna say it. After the first two games,
you're gonna go on the road to Vegas. They just
beat Baltimore. I think it's it's an uplifting thing to
have Andy Dalton come in and play at this time,
and again not judging the next ten years. Let's just
uh to coach his point. Let's see what happens in Vegas.
Let's seew it goes with Dalton. How this looks. The

(21:44):
defense has to stop the run. We just had a
Charger team run for two nineteen. So there's other areas
that have to be addressed too. So this was the
biggest one on the table, But I think there's some
other things that have to be fixed if they're gona
start winning some football.

Speaker 6 (21:55):
I think that bryce maybe even like the idea that
Dalton's coming in.

Speaker 3 (21:58):
And again I'm not predicting any miracles here, but we've
seen this in the NFL where a veteran quarterback fits
magic Joe Flacco last year. Right. Who thought the Browns
with Joe Flacco would get to the playoffs? Nobody? I did,
Zoke did, Native Ohioan.

Speaker 5 (22:19):
I didn't know he played so poorly against the Houston
Texans in the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (22:22):
Well, listen, he gave it all back. The devil comes
for his due, right, But I just think we've seen
these veteran quarterbacks who've been around the game. They're able
to bottle it up sometimes. And again I do give
Dave Canalis a lot of credit. It takes a lot
of gumption to make this decision going into week three,

(22:43):
and there's a lot of guys in that locker room
who are playing for their football futures, who want to win,
who want to be a part of a winning culture.
If you wait too long, this season gets out of hand.
You do it now, and you give Andy Dalton chance. Eugene. Again,
I'm not predicting any miracles, but you never know. We

(23:05):
got a wrap. We'll be back after this. Panther Talk
presented by Bosh power Tools on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
This is Panther Talk presented by Bosh power Tools.

Speaker 4 (23:17):
Yeah, there's a lot of factors.

Speaker 2 (23:19):
We want to play more football, a lot of factors
that go into it, you know, for this decision, you know,
and ultimately just kind of lands on my shoulders to
be able to make the best decision for our group,
to give us our chance, our best chance to win
this week. And we focus on the weeks, We focus
on the challenge at hand, and we feel like Andy,
give us our best chance to meet the.

Speaker 1 (23:39):
Challenge back to a Niche Shroff, Eugene Robinson, and Jim
Zoki with Panther Talk on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.

Speaker 5 (23:50):
Nowadays you mainly see Roman Harper, the former Panthers defensive back,
on television with ESPN and the SEC Network. We spent
two of his NFL seasons with the Panthers, including a
part of that Super Bowl fifty team. He played for
the New Orleans Saints and their Super Bowl championship team
and spent eight years in New Orleans after playing his
college career at Alabama. You talked with the former Panthers
defensive back this week, Roman.

Speaker 1 (24:11):
Harper thirty seasons of Panther football, a celebration of the players, coaches,
and other key figures who contributed to the organizational success.

Speaker 5 (24:24):
All right, Roman Harper joining us part of the Super
Bowl fifty team. Played two seasons with the Panthers twenty
fourteen and twenty fifteen. And when you look at that
twenty fifteen season, I mean that team's seventeen and one
heading into the last game. Before we talk about the
Super Bowl game itself, you know what brought that team together.
What was special out of all those years you played
with the Saints, obviously two years here with the Panthers,

(24:46):
what stood out about that team and how that chemistry
all came together.

Speaker 9 (24:49):
Honestly, the biggest thing was I thought the togetherness, and
then I thought coach Ron Rivera did a great job
of understanding who he were, so it was like everybody
was just together. I just did a little thing. Trey
Boston said it correctly because Mario let it off by
saying trust. That team trusted each other from and I
always think if your team's worth any kind of you

(25:12):
got to have trust on all three levels, from coach
to coach, player to player, and coach the player. So
everybody in the buildings pulling all in the same direction
with the same goal, the same aspirations. And you got
to have the right mix of old to young players.
Young guys that are starting to come into there, maybe
getting out of their first deal playing for something. They're
not rookies, some rookies still playing and participating. But then

(25:35):
you're also a mix of veteran guys that've been around
the block that's won some games and some big moments.
And so I saw it start to come together. For me,
I had zero expectations. Well, I didn't know how we're
going to be. I really did, because we weren't good
fourteen and I was been around some reading teams in
New Orleans. Fourteen was ugly, but we made the playoffs

(25:56):
when we won a game, but it's still ugly. And
then to lose Kelvin Benjamin in preseason to then all
of a sudden we win some games, win some games,
but Seattle for me was a turning point. And I
told Coach Wilks after the game, I said, Coach, I've
been on the Super Bowl before. I said, they're starting
to believe that for me, going on road the way

(26:18):
we wanted, offense wanted went up and scored. The defense
shut it down like it was both of us. It
wasn't just a defense having to win us a game.
It's like, no offensively doom then defensively shut the door
on him. And I told Coach was like starting to believe.
I saw it in the young guys on the team.
I saw it like it was a different look in
our eye after that, And so for me, that's when

(26:41):
I knew we'd be pretty good.

Speaker 5 (26:42):
And especially back then, I mean everyone knows the twelfth Man,
but that was a tough place for anybody to go
win a big game there.

Speaker 9 (26:48):
So for me being on so many winning teams in
New Orleans for those eight years, we beat them maybe
my second year in the league, but that was early
and they weren't they weren't that good. Maybe I can't
even remember. It was that long ago, but for me
a meaningful game. That was the first time I'd won
one in Seattle. I'd lost the last three or so,
including when beast Quake was there, you know what I'm saying.

(27:09):
So I had lived through Seattle a lot of bad wounds,
and then everybody tried to make it another big deal
in the newspaper when we played him in the playoffs,
and I said, well, we're the better team. Why is
everybody asking us like we're the better than like we're
the better team? And Coach Vera, I remember he came
into the meaning room and he said, Roman, I saw
what you said. I believe you. We are the better

(27:31):
team and we need and so he just confirmed and
that was that. I love Coach Ron Rivera's the way
he he really believed in me and talked to me.
We had a good, little great bond, a special relationship
for being a New Orleans saying for all those years
and then accepting me. And the biggest compliment he ever

(27:52):
told me was that New Orleans should have never let
me go. But I'm happy that you're here. And he
told me that in fourteen. He said, you should have
than a player that finishes your career one team. You
do that good, but I'm glad you're here with us,
So that was a very big compliment.

Speaker 3 (28:26):
We're back here on Panther Talk. Carolina heads to Las
Vegas on Sunday to take the Raiders. Panthers looking for
their first road win since the twenty twenty two season
finale against the Saints, when fittingly, Andy Dalton was the
New Orleans quarterback. We bring in Jason Horowitz, play by
play voice for the Las Vegas Raiders, and Jason, I

(28:48):
want to backtrack. Let's go back to last year when
Antonio Pierce took over for Josh McDaniels as head coach.
What fundamentally changed with that move.

Speaker 10 (29:02):
Attitude? And I would say the way that players felt
within the locker room, the way they felt about the
locker room, and then the defensive freedom to do things
the way that I think Patrick Graham wanted to change.
You know, the defense wasn't bad in the first eight
games when Josh McDaniels was the head coach and Patrick Graham,

(29:24):
who was now in his third year as a defensive coordinator,
I mean he's he was there. But the defense changed
in that they were putting players in different spots to
play better. And so the last nine games of last year,
the Raiders gave up sixteen and a half points a game.
It was number one in the league through nine games.
And I believe the number now is that Antonio Pierce

(29:48):
is the allowed or a defense has allowed the fewest
amount of points and the coaches first eleven games since
like the nineties, So he is this defense is phenomenal.
It's interesting, we're giving up more than twenty points a game,
twenty two and a half, and we are, you know,
when it's all said and done, the rushing yards were
allowing is a big number. But against the Chargers, who

(30:11):
you guys just saw JK. Dobbins had two carries for
one hundred and six yards and the rest of the
time the Chargers were averaging like two point four. And
then you know against the Ravens, who have now thirty
five straight games with one hundred yards or more, they
had nine yards rushing in the first half. So our
our run defense until a couple of gap plays in
the second half is really good both weeks. And our

(30:34):
secondary is young, but it's good.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
How much of a difference has Christian Wilkins made.

Speaker 10 (30:40):
Huge huge I mean MaTx Crosby yesterday had four tackles
for loss in two sacks, So you know, he's he's
making his push for defensive MVP early this year like
he did last year. And you know, one of the
cool things about Christian other than the fact that I
took my son with me this week on the road trip,
my seven year old and we were in the team

(31:01):
hotel and saw Christian and he comes up to me
and my son and he's like, what's up, homie, And like,
my seven year old is on cloud nine. For the
rest of the month, So that was cool, But he
is He's not a guy that's like, hey, I have
to get what I need, you know, if you a
lot of the people who are breaking down film from
yesterday have talked about some of the sacrifices he's making
to make it even easier for Max Crosby, and that

(31:24):
has been huge because.

Speaker 3 (31:27):
Yeah, he doesn't need help. Crosby doesn't need help, you know,
he doesn't need help.

Speaker 10 (31:30):
No, he doesn't need help. But but we have a
guy on the other side, and he's named Malcolm Koontz
who last year when Antonio appears took over, had eight
sacks and nine games and he was expected to be
the other really good productive defensive end, but he hurt
his knee leading up to Week one in practice and
went on ir so they've had to make up for that.
And and and those two guys have been a menace

(31:51):
to the opposing offensive lines.

Speaker 3 (31:53):
I want to go to the offensive shot of the ball.
It seemed like this offseason the Raiders would be in
the market via trade, free agency, or trading up in
the draft or using the draft to go get a quarterback.
They decided to stick with Aidan O'Connell. You bring in
Gardner Minshew. What was the reasoning behind I guess kind

(32:17):
of standing pat at the quarterback position and not making
that big splash.

Speaker 10 (32:22):
Well, well, they brought in Gardner Minshew because our new
general manager, Tom Telesco. They didn't want to get stuck
with Aidan O'Connell as the only quarterback on the roster
with any experience in case something happened in the draft
where they didn't get any of the and I don't
think they liked all six of the guys who went
in the top twelve, but in case something happened in

(32:44):
the draft where they didn't get someone, and something happened
in the draft and they didn't get someone, so so
that you know, kind of played out and then it
was an Aidan O'Connell Gardner Minshew battle all the way
through the second preseason game when Antonio Pierce announced Gardner
is the starter, and you know, it really wasn't until
the late third quarter yesterday that this offense started to click.

(33:07):
Gardner has been very very high percentage so far in
the first two games. He's over seventy six percent completion,
but they weren't getting any yards and then all of
a sudden second half yesterday, they well found Bowers, they
found DeVante Adams. They both had nine catches, they combined
for two hundred and eight yards, and almost all of
those were in the second half. And so now they're

(33:27):
starting to find a rhythm and they're going to try
to put that together again on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
Yeah, Brock Bowers has been awfully impressive. Watching a little
bit of the Raiders Chargers game last week, preparing for
the Panthers Week two matchup, and watching some of the
highlights from the Raiders Ravens game yesterday. What's been the
most impressive part about the start of Bowers's rookie season.

Speaker 10 (33:50):
So, I think everyone knew how good of a playmaker
he is. I mean, that's why people thought he could
go top five in the draft. You know, maybe the
best end in college football history, the only two time back,
the Award winner, So you've got all of that. But
he's also a really good blocker, which is something that
I don't know that everyone would have talked about because

(34:11):
you don't think of him that way, but he just
you know, he makes him a matchup problem because you've
got him and DeVante Adams and sometimes they're lined up
right next to each other, and there's just not many
guys who are going to be lined up next to
brock Powers who can cover him from a size perspective,
from a speed perspective, especially when you have, you know,
what could be a very well Hall of Fame receiver

(34:33):
and Devonte Adams, who's was at it again yesterday. So
he's just he's elusive. He's got great route running at
his hands, I mean, and he's I don't know, I
haven't had a chance to watch the Panthers tape yesterday.
I don't know if you've watched the Raiders yet from yesterday,
but like, there's a catch early in the game. Well,
he's fallen to the turf and he snatches the ball
with his hands, maybe two yards in front of him,
and brings it in with a defender on his back.

(34:54):
I mean, his hands are incredible.

Speaker 3 (34:57):
Jason Allen on this. It's been twenty years since the
Raiders won a playoff game. They've only been to the
playoffs twice since going to the Super Bowl with Bill
Callahan after he took over from John Gruden. In that span,
there's been a lot of coaching turnover, a lot of changes, turmoil,

(35:17):
the team moves right, you have some angst within the
fan base. Does it feel like Antonio Pierce and with
the culture that's in place and some of the pieces
that are in place, you probably still have to go
get a quarterback at some point, But does it seem
that you're finally seeing the infrastructure of what could be
a contender sooner rather than later.

Speaker 10 (35:38):
I mean, I think they'd love to know that Gardner
Minsch is gonna throw eighty percent the whole season and
then they're like good. But barring that, I think that
second part of what you said is true. And then
with Antonio Pearson and I can't speak to you know, Callahan,
Norv Turner, Lane Kiffen, Tom Cable, Dennis Allen, Jack del Rion.

(35:59):
It's a lot of new and I think I missed somebody.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
Honestly, Rue Jackson was in the right a year.

Speaker 10 (36:04):
Maybe I missed you Jack did. Yeah, And then obviously
I can speak to Jash McDaniels. This is my first year.
I do think though, you know, Antonio Pierce feels different,
and I think it feels different because the attitude that
he is embracing. You know, he's talked about this since
day one, growing up in Compton being a Raiders fan,

(36:25):
wanting to bring all of that back to the Raiders,
you know, kind of like the US against the world mentality,
and the people he's brought around him, Marvin Lewis, Tom Coughlin, Joe, Philben,
all these head coaches who were all on staff, that
they feel that they have the infrastructure your word, and
I think that's a great word, the infrastructure in place
to be a player coach, to learn how to coach

(36:47):
the right way, to get better as an organization, to
let defense carry the way, and to have some spark
plays and put on a show, because that's what Antonio
Pierce always talks about. We're in Vegas, you got to
put on a show. And when we put on a show,
people will come here. And he needs Raiders fans, not
the visiting teams fans, which has been a problem the
first few years. And he truly believes when they start

(37:07):
winning at a regular clip that Allegiant Stadium is gonna
be one of the great home field advantages in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (37:13):
Well I should ask then, for the Panther fans making
the trip to Sin City, what should they know about
Allegiant Stadium.

Speaker 10 (37:21):
It's great. Allegiant Stadium is awesome. You know, there's a
lot of glitz and glamour. You don't get this at
every stadium, but the Raiders put on a halftime show
almost every week. And I don't mean like marching band
or like hey, let's welcome back so and so and
you just the person comes out in waves and like

(37:41):
we're talking about like halftime acts, like we've had Nelly.

Speaker 3 (37:45):
Wow Dee Pain.

Speaker 10 (37:47):
We're talking major Nelly for Toddle. Like almost every single
week the Raiders have a halftime show. Now it's not
on the field. They do it up at the stage
which is on the second level in one of the
end zones by where the tour, which is the Al
Davis torst that they like pregame and it's awesome. So
get your souvenirs, get your concessions, like I don't know,

(38:08):
seven minutes to go in the second quarter, and get
back in your seat for halftime.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
Like the line from Coming to America halftime, it's the
best part of the game. We can't wait, man, I
will see you. I will see you on Sunday. First
trip to Allegiance Stadium for me. We're excited. I know
our group is excited and I look forward to catching
up with you in person on Sunday. Thank you, Jason,
thanks for having me.

Speaker 10 (38:29):
Matt all right.

Speaker 3 (38:30):

Speaker 3 (38:52):
An Ay Schraf, Eugene Robinson, Jim Zoky Panthers Raiders this weekend.
First glance at this game, things jump out. I know
the Panthers have struggled to stop the run the first
two weeks. The Raiders have not been able to run
the football. Andy Dalton will step in his quarterback this

(39:14):
week and against that Raiders defense. To me, third downs
become critical. Staying out of third downs becomes maybe more
critical because then you let Max Crosby and those guys
pin their ears back.

Speaker 5 (39:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (39:28):
I tell you, well, you stay out a third down,
but it's hard to stay out a third down if
you can get third down and six minus something like
that and not being third down and seventh plus, because
if you're in't third down and seventh plus or if
they're pinning in their airsback and they come.

Speaker 4 (39:41):
To go get you.

Speaker 6 (39:42):
And so I would expect also that what Andy Dalton's
gonna see a lot of blisses. I would I would
imagine that try to get him off the spot, and
he's a big man, and try to get people in
his face. So I would imagine that, you know he's
not bryce that that they're gonna try to go ahead
and and send people after him.

Speaker 3 (40:00):
So the Chargers run the ball against the Raiders pretty well,
especially in the second half, and then the Raiders did
a really good job in the first half against the Ravens.
Chuba Hubbard looked really good. He did on Sunday, just
didn't get enough carries because of how the game went.

Speaker 5 (40:14):
Yeah, I think this is, you know, establishing the run.
I mean, people don't want to got to stop the run.
You got to run the ball. And you do those things,
you shorten the game. You give yourself a better chance
to win. I did not expect to see the stats
page with Gardner Minshew saying he's at seventy seven percent completion.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
Through two games.

Speaker 5 (40:30):
Oh no, even Drew Brees wasn't seventy seven percent and
it's only got two touchdowns, but they you know, he's
one of those guys we're talking during the break about
Ryan Fitzpatrick. Some of these guys that kind of hang around.
They can be streaky good and you hope to catch
them when they they're not on the ascent as far
as that that hot streak goes, because he can he
can get some pretty good weeks put together at times.

(40:51):
His problem through his career has been just that consistency factor.

Speaker 3 (40:54):
So seventy seven percent, that means a regression is coming right.

Speaker 1 (40:57):
It has to.

Speaker 5 (40:58):
The curve has got a flatten.

Speaker 3 (41:00):
The curve past wee we've got to be better than
two for twenty two on third downs. Jim made the
point earlier the move to put Dalton in, you can
sense a communal uplift. Yes, indeed, we take it to Vegas.
Hopefully the aces all come up and we're rolling sevens

(41:21):
on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (41:23):
