Speaker 1 (00:03):
No to chim Zok with the Panthers postgame show exclusively
on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Nothing hear me out, I.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Don't hear how about that?
Speaker 4 (00:32):
With this one works? Not the not the introduction we
had planned for.
Speaker 5 (00:36):
But here we are.
Speaker 6 (00:36):
Well, Hey, what I was gonna say is how about
that thirty to nothing of the Panthers shut out the
Atlanta Falcons, Jim Zochie along with Mike Pachico, Jonathan Stewart
with us tonight. We're gonna have Charles Johnson dropping by
here in just a little while too, and Jase two. Man,
that that felt good. That felt like we've been waiting
for a while Like that. I it's to get a
(00:58):
win as big when you start out owing too. But
the way they did it with the defense today, the.
Speaker 7 (01:03):
Defense looked the best they've looked in at least two
to three years in my opinion, And I hate to
say that I'm not surprised looking at what we've done
this offseason. Bringing the guys in murragg Oh my goodness,
he was a thumper all day. Yeah, you know, we
(01:24):
brought him in here to do exactly what he did today,
which was be physical at the point of contact in
the secondary. A guy that can come up and get
off blocks, but more importantly secure tackles. And he secured
more than just tackles. He made people hurt today.
Speaker 8 (01:40):
And I think the defensive line gets a lot of
credit to I mean, Derek Brown, I think was in
the face of Michael Pennix all day long. The defense
really kind of swarmed, you know, to chase dows point
and then offense making places when they needed to. This
kind of reminded me of the formula of all those
winning teams.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
You were on.
Speaker 5 (01:57):
Yeah, and takeaways for scores.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:59):
You know, when the defense is able to get three
and out forrest turnovers, it makes things easier for the
for the offense. You know, we we had a muff
muffled putt the earlier. We'll talk about that later, but
you know we don't. We've got to talk about the
special teams. That was the story of the day, special.
Speaker 6 (02:18):
Good and bad and bad special teams by Atlanta missing
some field goals, they had trouble fielding kickoffs.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
Especially after they replaced their kicker betting inaccurate.
Speaker 9 (02:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (02:27):
Cool, cool, young way cool. They they that young man
deserves an apology and maybe maybe he needs to be
be back on the squad because, yeah, those two missed
field goals are opportunities for the Panthers to, you know,
to take that momentum and do something with it.
Speaker 6 (02:46):
And you went on day where Bryce Young only had
to throw for one hundred and twenty one yards. So
you were talking about quarterback playing all this and that,
but when you got the defense, you got the running game,
which we talked about in the pregame stew All that
going on at the same time, special teams all chipping in.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Uh, that's the kind of the ultimate team victory today.
Speaker 7 (03:02):
Yeah, man, Uh, you know, I look at this offense
and what they've gone through the last two weeks. It's
been a multitude of a lot of things, right, you know,
we talk about execute and guy's got to take ownership.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
But they started off on the right foot. They moved
the ball.
Speaker 7 (03:22):
They had to play, They had a game plan and
it was almost kind of like they wanted to make
sure we got Bryson into some type of rhythm, some
type of routine, which is you know, nice easy pass to.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Who was that was a.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Seven?
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (03:43):
He so getting him twice in a row off of
play action right when we getting getting get Bryson into
Bryce Young into play action, you're getting him on the move.
Right when you're getting a quarterback on the move or
getting him into his rhythm, You're getting him to feel
the the off feel the game, feel the tempo, getting
guys chasing after him. You're doing those types of things early.
(04:07):
I think is part of the recipe for the Carolina Panthers,
especially when you throw in the wrinkle of play action.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
You know, we want to run the ball.
Speaker 7 (04:16):
But starting the game off with that, that recipe I
think was was tremendous.
Speaker 8 (04:20):
And I think the other thing I like too Jonathan
was when he was holding the ball, he then made
the right decision when to take off and kind of
you know, force the defense to react.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
He was decisive.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
Yeah, right.
Speaker 7 (04:30):
You know, no hesitation you saw last week and the
week before. There's a little bit of hesitation, and a
little bit of that might be because of you know,
protection up front and communication flaws here and there. But
I think for the offense this is a copy and
paste going forward. You know, obviously your opponents are going
(04:51):
to be different and your play calling might be different
based upon that. But as far as the execution and
the way they went about their this game cop.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
All right, it was fun to watch. We're gonna talk
a lot more about it. We'll listen back to some
of the highlights. We will have the scoreboard update with Mike.
Charles Johnson, will be dropping by who is one of
the key pounding drummers today out there, and a lot
more we'll hear from the head coach, Dave Canalis, Luke
and Jake and Deniche up in the booth. Before're gonna break.
Let's go ahead and pause ten seconds for station identification.
(05:22):
Here on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network, Panthers win thirty
to nothing over the Atlanta Falcons, first win of the
year for Carolina. Atlanta now that same record with their
loss and one and two. Next up, the Panthers will
be on the road at New England. Much more to
get to as we continue on the postgame show coming
up next on the Carolina Panthers the Radio Network.
Speaker 8 (05:46):
Welcome back to the fifth quarter after the Panthers' decisive
thirty nothing win over Atlanta.
Speaker 5 (05:53):
Mike Pachigo, Jonathan's Suit, Jim z Ok with you here.
Speaker 8 (05:55):
Drive Round League, brought to you by the Honda Dealers
of the Carolinas. So down to the wire here in Cleveland,
Green Bay and Cleveland at all even at ten apiece.
Jacksonville with about a minute eleven to go a touchdown
better than Houston, Minnesota cruising over Cincinnati over five and
a half minutes to go in that game forty eight
to ten Philadelphia and the LA Rams one point game.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
That one's going down to the wire as well.
Speaker 8 (06:19):
The Rams have the ball twenty seven twenty six Eagles
in that one, Tampa Bay over the Jets twenty six
twenty approaching the two minute warning there, and the Commanders
over the Raiders forty one to twenty one at a
two minute warning in that game. Finals from earlier today,
Pittsburgh goes into in New England. They win there twenty
one to fourteen. Aaron Rodgers one hundred and thirty nine
(06:41):
yards in the air, two touchdowns and an interception. Indianapolis
over Tennessee forty one to twenty. So the Daniel Jones
Express continues. Jim z Oki, they're now three and eighteen
of twenty five, two hundred and twenty eight yards with
a touchdown and no interceptions. Also helps Jonathan Stewart that
they have Jonathan ta Taylor who rushed for seventeen yards
and one hundred two yards on seventeen carries.
Speaker 7 (07:04):
Yeah, whenever you have a guy back to carry of
the tote like that, it's easy business, right. You gotta
stop one to the other. And I think today for
the Carolina Panthers, we were able to get the job
done with Bryce Jim you talked about it earlier. You know,
he didn't have the crazy stat line today, right, This
(07:27):
was grit. This was Carolina Panther football, where you create
turnovers on defense, you smash people in the mouth, and
you get your running backs to run through people's face.
Mask Rico Dawdle, I mean, he's an unsung hero, you know,
just a different you know pace in which we played today.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Old and then there's the Eagles, some big, big.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
Man football going back on the last played of the game.
Wow for Philadelphia.
Speaker 6 (07:54):
By the way, Cleveland looked like they just kicked a
game winning field goal against Green Bay right as you
were wrapping up that score there, So I got some
crazy stuff going. That was actually Jordan Davis making that
big run. Charlotte Kid, Charlotte charlotkis you mentioned Daniel Jones
still Charlotte Kidds so Drake may but we'll.
Speaker 5 (08:10):
Talk about him later.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Well that's next week with New England. But yeah, today,
how'd they do?
Speaker 5 (08:14):
They lost twenty one fourteen.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
Okay, yep, so there you go with that.
Speaker 6 (08:18):
But yeah, as Jay stew was talking about makes it easy,
we talk about taking pressure off your quarterback, well pack defense,
special team's good run.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
Game didn't have to do a lot.
Speaker 6 (08:27):
It felt like Ted Rob McMillan had like eight catches
for one hundred yards, but he finishes with three for
forty eight. But they were very important when he made
the catches that he did make.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
Yeah, that that third down and short there where he
jumped to the moon, it seems like it was like
he you know, you played video games. I don't know
if you guys played video games. Jim, do you ever
played with the last time you played video.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
Games when my kids were still in the house. It's
been about ten years.
Speaker 7 (08:49):
Okay, and so you know when a video game hits
a glitch, that's what it looked like when t mack
went up for that ball there. You know, he's a
tremendous talent every time and catches the ball. It seems
like it's so easy, and you can tell during the
game he got frustrated there with some drops that he
thought that he should have caught. And you'd love to
(09:11):
see that out of your your young star player, right,
a guy that is his worst self critic. You know,
I feel like next week this is the building block
for the entire offense to basically know that.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
They can win games any type of way.
Speaker 7 (09:27):
Right, you can throw for three hundred plus yards, he
can throw for less than two hundred and have a
solid running game and have our defense just whiptail.
Speaker 8 (09:39):
I thought the other big piece to this for for
Bryce Young was and sometimes this is used as a
maybe an insult, but in this case, I think it's
a positive.
Speaker 5 (09:46):
Is he really managed the game well.
Speaker 8 (09:48):
And you know, all the quarterbacks have to manage the
game well, but he really stayed kind of within the
confines of what they were trying to do.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
And and it helps when the.
Speaker 8 (09:55):
Defense plays as well as as they did, and defense
was putting pressure on Atlanta. But you know the six
they almost picked six, Yeah, you know, I guess.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
That should have been two kick six.
Speaker 7 (10:07):
You want to talk about that return and Mike Jack,
let's let's let's practice.
Speaker 8 (10:13):
Well, speaking of video games, you needed the power boost
button there.
Speaker 7 (10:16):
He had enough power. He just stopped for too long.
I think that he was really trying to read his blocks.
And sometimes it just goes to show you, right, you
can be one of the best athletes in the world
and and be on the other side of the ball.
And if you're not doing this every day, sure, it's
it's it's hard to you know, to adjust when all
of a sudden I got the ball in my hand.
(10:37):
The last time I had the ball in my hand
was when I was.
Speaker 5 (10:39):
In middle school.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
I was playing offense back then.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Good and the solid job on Bijon Robertson.
Speaker 6 (10:47):
We know he's one of the best. We talked about
it in the pregame shows too. Thirteen carry, seventy two yards,
five and a half yards per carry.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
You'll take that.
Speaker 6 (10:53):
But in a game like this, words thirty to nothing,
those are kind of hollow calories, like it wasn't much
to what that added for what Atlanta was doing to Yeah.
Speaker 7 (11:00):
We really took away of the run game in my opinion.
You know, when we when it was time for them
to run the ball, they couldn't and that's when you
find yourself.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
In the defense.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
You know, you know that they wanted to run the stretch,
the stretch zone.
Speaker 7 (11:16):
We took that away early, the gap, integrity, the discipline
there by our guys and secondary coming up and making
the right fits. You saw in the second half he
did have one carry there on their own sideline, but
by that time, that's what we wanted them to do, right,
keep everything in front of you, don't give up the
big long explosives behind you, and when you are able
(11:40):
to commit to you know, your game plan early on
is stopping the run, making them one dimensional.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
I mean, Pinnis Pinis was getting hit every play.
Speaker 7 (11:52):
It seemed like Derek Brown's in your face, you know,
like Godzilla ninety five, one hands up.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
That's a scary thing.
Speaker 7 (11:59):
And then actually getting hit every single time. He was
throwing those deep balls across the middle. You know that
takes a toll on a young quarterback throws his timing off.
Speaker 6 (12:10):
Yeah, he finished about fifty percent in the game. As
far as his completions, We'll see how he finished up and.
Speaker 8 (12:15):
How many times do we just have Aaron throws because
the Panthers knocked him off his spot where he wanted
to throw.
Speaker 5 (12:20):
I mean it was he had pressure all day long.
Speaker 7 (12:23):
Yeah, and that's one of the things that we missed
right last year. You know, everybody's talking about, you know,
getting you a pass rush, and everybody's stinking to yourself, Oh,
we need sacks.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
You don't necessarily need six sacks a game. You just
need pressure.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Right.
Speaker 7 (12:38):
If the quarterback is comfortable on a spot, we want
to get him off his spot, which means it is
getting him off his timing, his throws. What he's used
to delivering a certain ball to Drake London in the scene,
he's not. If he's not on his on his dot,
it's a different throw, you know. And I think he
went through such a routine today.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
One of the.
Speaker 7 (12:58):
Picks that he through was to Jean Robinson. Right, Jon's
over there in the flat. We knew where he was
going every single play.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
There was a third down, second down, and he's out
of the route. He's going to be in the flat.
Speaker 7 (13:12):
So if I know that a defense and he's going
through his progressions going one, two, three, checkdown, yep, And
sure enough Shaw Smith Wade is there to take away
his safety blanket and.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
He took it for a score.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Yep.
Speaker 6 (13:29):
Random sure thirteen yards picked six Pennocks by the way,
eighteen to thirty six right at fifty seventy two yards
no touchdowns obviously, with no points and the two interceptions.
Much more to come. We're here from coach Dave Canalis.
We'll here from some of these Panther players. We also
get the thoughts of Jake and Luke and a Niche
in the booth. As we continue in the aftermath of
a terrific afternoon, the home opener Panthers win thirty to
(13:51):
nothing over the Atlanta Falcons.
Speaker 10 (13:54):
He's called Penders.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Post up show line from the Bank of Americas Citio.

Speaker 6 (14:39):
Falc in the game since eighteen eighty eight, Jim Mike,
Jon Van Stewart now joined by Charles Johnson after the
Panthers thirty to nothing win over the Atlanta Falcons and
for a guy from Georgia, that man feel pretty good atime.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
You beat the Falcons is a good day, right.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
You rid my mind?
Speaker 1 (14:55):
Man?
Speaker 9 (14:56):
Anytime we get to beat the Falcons is a great
day for a panthanas tell.
Speaker 6 (14:59):
Us about out what you saw out of the defense today.
That was so much more than what we've seen the
first two weeks. Off some shades of it last week,
but really what all came together today.
Speaker 9 (15:09):
I think the turnover battle, watching the guys run to
the ball, I think everything was like running with intent.
The pressure that was bringing on third downs, I think
he sprinkling in a little pressure on first down too.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
So I think they was their whole game plan.
Speaker 9 (15:24):
Will just get out of them today And I just
like everything they did today, So I say stick stay
being aggressive, stay being aggressive, and they try to determine
the game quick and early.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
Have the QB get rid of the ball.
Speaker 8 (15:35):
And I think Charles, One thing I think a defense
has to love is when they play well enough that
the other team has to change their quarterback.
Speaker 5 (15:41):
And that's exactly what the Panthers did.
Speaker 8 (15:43):
As you mentioned, not a lot of time for Michael
Pennick Shunior, but really kind of purbiated throughout the whole defense.
Speaker 9 (15:49):
Man, an's time you get pressure on the QB, that's
going to help you out, regardless to give you the
DB's a chance to jump on routes, sit on routes.
So it just help them out at then long, especially
if you can do it with front four. But I
think they was mixing the and blitz as a five
man six man rush. So anytime you can get after
it could be that's a plus for the defense.
Speaker 7 (16:09):
You know, Charles, this is the first time I think
I've seen this defense fly around the way they did
today in the last three two years. What are some
of the key contributors as far as this defense goes?
Speaker 2 (16:21):
That leads to that, right?
Speaker 7 (16:23):
I mean, what guys on this team now has given
this team and a whole different edge.
Speaker 9 (16:29):
Yeah, I'm liking you know, my solid guy is evolves
around Darrin Brown, like you gotta stop the run anytime
you gotta stop the run. With the Panthers, I think
you can lead. You can go into the season with
you know, Kyle Holts. But if your front four is
the dogs of the defense, then you know how everything
else is taking care easy. If you got four guys
(16:51):
that can run and stop the run, not just dns
that can pass rush, but do both. If they do both,
that helps the defense out from in the shit. Now
you're back seven, your linebackers get to flow more because
you know you're gonna get a double team, double team
one on ones or double team one on ones, one
on ones, one on ones, and then your secondary can
(17:11):
eat and feed up of that, knowing that my d
line is going to get there. They only got three seconds.
So if we can keep playing that part of that,
I think we can. I think we can get better
and better right each each week.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
Yeah, Jim, it was.
Speaker 7 (17:24):
If I had to be on that offensive side of
the ball today as an Atlanta falcon YEP, the word
that comes to mind is suffocating.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Right.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
All you're getting is a four down rush.
Speaker 7 (17:34):
Which means defensive lines whooping tail and the guys are
just playing in the clouds.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
Right.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
If I'm a running back.
Speaker 7 (17:41):
And my routes are going to be in the cloud
right on the flat routes, my swing routes.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Screens.
Speaker 7 (17:47):
You know, they locked down the I mean, shoot, they
rushed the quarterback so well on one play that he
ended up in the screen path, right, So guys are
just executed, right. I heard Darrick Brown after the first
you know, Jaguars game. You know, it was a post game,
you know, postgame interview, and one of the things that
(18:08):
he said that made me feel good was it's enough talking.
We got to go out It's enough talking, enough speeches.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
Enough.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
You know, we've been there, Like I've actually heard you
say enough.
Speaker 7 (18:20):
Of all talking there talking about I'm telling you, if
we need to go out there and play, coaches, coach players,
play right.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
And I think we're starting to see that take from.
Speaker 8 (18:30):
And I think the most important thing is it wasn't
just one side. It was offensive defense working complimentary football.
What would you try to do every game?
Speaker 9 (18:37):
Yeah, yeah, I'm a defensive guy, so I'm biased when
it comes to that. I think defensive they set offensive
up to truth be successful, you know what I'm saying.
And I think defensive winning super bowls. So that's just me,
and I think today the Panthers defense set the offense
up in perfect ways and perfect time where all they
had to do was just manage the game, execute it
(18:59):
simply and then get touchdowns right, no turnovers, simple game plan,
no behind the yard scrimmage, and get touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
And I think that's a recipe to win.
Speaker 6 (19:10):
And credit to to geral Berrow and that staff on
the defensive side, because a couple of weeks ago people
were on their backs and then you see what they
were able to do in this game today. We know
it's a rare thing, but to get a shutout in
the NFL, and granted they missed a couple of field goals,
but one more was a fifty.
Speaker 4 (19:24):
Five yarders not a gimme?
Speaker 2 (19:25):
How rare?
Speaker 6 (19:26):
And how difficult is it in the NFL to play
sixty minutes and give up no points.
Speaker 9 (19:30):
In the in the game like that, somebody's gonna get
fired Monday from the fathons, somebody getting fired money. Imagine
going to that meeting after you just cut your kicker.
Speaker 5 (19:42):
Yeah, they already fired the kicker, and.
Speaker 9 (19:44):
Then the next kicker and he shanks the first two
and he wants to pay raiser, So that they got
to do some explaining Monday in that group Monday morning,
and one of them coaches, so seeing that, that's pretty
funny though.
Speaker 7 (19:59):
To me, Yeah, man, to get skunked in the NFL,
that's very rare. But the way they did it, I
mean that before the first half, that last drive by
the Falcons, that.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Was poor play calling. They didn't have a plan. It
was just you know, your you teach your guys before
a half.
Speaker 7 (20:18):
If you have no time outs and you're running a
route in the middle of the field and time is ticking,
do not catch the ball, especially if you have another down.
Speaker 8 (20:27):
Right.
Speaker 7 (20:29):
He caught that ball and it was game over, right,
and so it's it's clear that these guys are not prepared.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
I feel like we were.
Speaker 7 (20:37):
The most prepared team today, which was which allowed us
to play fast, which made us play it more discipline ball. Uh,
those are the things that it's the simple simple things.
Defense has the tone by being where they're supposed to be, alignment,
assignment and execution, and what that does gives us better
(20:57):
full field position, because that's what you're talking about, right, turnkey,
giving the offense a turnkey situation. Offense against the ball,
don't get in the yards they have.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
To punt or turnover.
Speaker 7 (21:09):
But if you point now, you're playing field position now,
it makes it a shorter field for the offense to score,
and that makes it makes for different play callings. Right,
look at Bryce. He didn't have to throw that throw
the ball around too much today because we had a
good field position. So this is a well rounded game.
Speaker 9 (21:26):
When was the last time we had a shout out?
Twenty twenty two? I mean two twenty to.
Speaker 6 (21:31):
Twenty two, and the last time by thirty plus points
was in twenty fifteen actually, so to that degree.
Speaker 9 (21:38):
So I was just having bad times back to back
right then getting the playoffs last time they played it.
Speaker 6 (21:44):
Yeah, we knocked him out last year too with that
last game. So hey tell us we before we let
you go, you did the key pounding drum and all
that today, What was your day like?
Speaker 4 (21:53):
And what's it like to hit that drum? Did did
you try to put the ballot right through it?
Speaker 3 (21:57):
Or what was your checknique out?
Speaker 9 (21:58):
It was a little sheet slick right on it, and
I was trying to aim right into it so I
can break it.
Speaker 3 (22:04):
But no, today is good. Pants have treated me right today?
Speaker 9 (22:07):
Came in, did some signing, signed with the Balls, came
and same signed with the fans. Uh, fed free food,

Man, you deserve it deserves it.
Speaker 9 (22:20):

Speaker 9 (22:33):
Oh, man, you know, shout out of my guys, the
Chambers High School we to in two right now.
Speaker 3 (22:37):

Speaker 9 (22:38):
Yeah, shout out my direct league Broncos twelve U there

four right now. But uh, you know, I got a
lot of stuff going on, but just trying to get
the youth right in Charlotte, trying to lead these young guys.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
You know what I'm saying, These guys right up in
and for those.
Speaker 4 (22:55):
Who don't know, Captain Monol and the head coach Chambers.
Speaker 9 (22:58):
Chaps, head coach at Chambers. He's doing a good job.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
Man. That culture is changing. It's gonna take us some time.
Speaker 9 (23:03):
But at the same time, I think we got a
good coach of staff to help get that stuff changed
round over there.
Speaker 6 (23:08):
Well, I'm glad that James Pearce did not have a
good homecoming today with Chambers High School. All right, thank
you Charles, making visit with you, Charles Johnson. Everybody, we're

All right, postgame show rolling on the fifth quarter.
Speaker 6 (23:36):
Welcome back Jim z Okilong with Mike Pachico, Jonathan she Are,
Kristin Valboni joining us a segment and this Panthers season
stay ice cold with Zippy Ice based right here in
show out the ice provider at Bank of America Stadium
keeping your drinks and the Panthers cool all game along
Zippy Ice keeping Carolina cool one.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
Game at a time.
Speaker 10 (23:54):
I thought that was appropriate.
Speaker 6 (23:56):
Is bringing Kristen because per September unusually hot day out
there today right out there in the field.
Speaker 13 (24:01):
It was First of all, I just want to say,
I can't believe I have to follow.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
Charles John's if everybody can, it's came.
Speaker 13 (24:11):
It was warm out there. Certainly the fans that are
in here, know that I was glad. Yes, I'm seeing
a lot of nods here for everyone, and I was
glad I forgot the sunscreen, Jim.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
I think I told you.
Speaker 13 (24:20):
You know, sideline reporters are very sensitive to the weather.
Forgot the sunscreen. Was able to recover some from a
photographer friend. So I'm feeling good right now.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
Did you find a bucket hat as I recommend it?
I did not.
Speaker 13 (24:30):
I did not, But you know what, I got to say.
It was too hot for a loss down there, and
the panther certainly.
Speaker 4 (24:35):
Well, we'll let the guys chat about it.
Speaker 6 (24:37):
But while I got the microphone for a moment here,
what was it like as far as the player excitement
on the sideline? Pitching a shut out is rare in
the NFL.
Speaker 13 (24:46):
I was just talking to Sue about it. He asked
me the same thing. It was awesome down there.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
It was great.
Speaker 13 (24:51):
You know, it had that mix of and I know
you guys see this with good teams where it's excitement,
but then it's also back to work.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
It's also back to business.
Speaker 13 (24:59):
There's a lot of communication between different position groups when
things went right, when things went wrong. But let me
tell you what they were so fired up. I mean,
first of all, what about that Ryan Fitzgerald field goal.
They were so fired up for that, that fifty seven
yarder the Shaw Smith Wade picked six, that was a
big one. It just felt like there were so many
different things to celebrate. And that's what Dave Canals said
to me earlier this week. He said, look, we feel
(25:22):
very confident that we can finish in all three phases.
And they did, and there was so much to celebrate
from each offense, defense, and special teams that everyone got
their shine and it was great. And stew you know
how it is with players down there. It's just all
different guys coming together and things to really get excited about.
Speaker 7 (25:39):
Yeah, I mean when you talk about finishing, that is
the key to winning game.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
That's the key to life, ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 7 (25:47):
Finishing it's half done, and if it's half done, it
ain't right.
Speaker 13 (25:51):
Well, and now about the way they started it too,
that was a big difference, you know.
Speaker 7 (25:55):
And and Bryce taking command, that's a really cool thing
to see, you know how things started the last the
last two games, and those games particularly, you know, it.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Was very uneasy.
Speaker 7 (26:12):
Unsettling, right seeing him come out tonight or today, and.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
Maybe it's a kid May's things right, Kate.
Speaker 7 (26:19):
Mains being in that lineup, you know, bigger body like
it's it's a whole different vibe up.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
They're up front with the protection.
Speaker 7 (26:27):
But when they started this game off with that play action,
we talked about it earlier. You know, you always start
the game off with probably six plays as far as
your call sheet, what you're gonna play no matter what.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
And then for but for them to go out.
Speaker 7 (26:44):
There and execute and and and follow up with him
being decisive enough to go off and just take that
run for the touchdown. You know a lot of times
he hesitates, and you know that's a hesitation away from
being pushed out of the pushed out of bounce.
Speaker 3 (26:59):
Right.
Speaker 7 (26:59):
So I just loved everything about it as far as
how intentional and how he executed from the jont.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
I completely agree.
Speaker 13 (27:06):
That's what I was gonna mention, was that price I'm
rushing touchdown?
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Talk about confidence, right.
Speaker 9 (27:10):
He gave a.
Speaker 13 (27:11):
STU you'll apreciate this. He gave a little flex down
to the end zones of the fans out there, and
that's when you see it. You know, he's known for
being so calm and collected. He certainly fires up his guys,
but in terms of kind of getting excited about his
own play. You know how quarterbacks are, right, they're gonna
they're gonna.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
Say, oh, you know, it was a good God.
Speaker 13 (27:26):
But you saw him get really excited there, and what
a difference between the first two games where things did
not start out so great. So to have that confidence,
as you said, to go down there, given those plays,
and then to see him convert, I mean it was
it was awesome and the fans were loving it.
Speaker 8 (27:39):
And that's why I wanted to ask you about when
did because of the two two previous starts weren't so great,
when did you get a sense that this game was
gonna be different.
Speaker 13 (27:45):
I honestly think it was the Brice touchdown. I mean
it just felt like there was command right there. I mean, look,
and then you go up ten nothing, you just go okay, okay,
we're the ones that had the ten point lead right now,
And it just felt like the things Mike, we were
talking about this a little bit earlier, the things that
bothered the Panthers in the first couple of games. We
(28:07):
saw kind of from the jump those things were not
bothering them. It had good control of the ball, no turnovers.
That defense was coming out and playing aggressive. They were
getting to Michael Pennocks junior very quickly, and they were
doing stuff to keep them off balance. And I thought
the way that defense came out really set the tone.
So in addition to that, Bryce Frown rushing touchdown, the
way that defense came out and played so aggressive, it
(28:28):
felt like, at least to me, what do you guys think,
it felt like the game was in hand pretty quickly.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
Yeah, yeah, I.
Speaker 6 (28:32):
Thought the kind of the dagger, if you will, if
there was a lot of football still they played in
the third quarter that picked six by Shaw Smith Wade
did that with that in the Mike Jack interception. Student,
I kind of give you shades of Thieves Avenue back
in the day.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 7 (28:44):
I was actually going to ask Charles what he thought
about Thieves Avenue because I talked to Trey Boston this
past two weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Had them on a podcast.
Speaker 7 (28:54):
But we're talking about Thieves Avenue and it's a mindset
and when we see guys, you know, scratch at and
clawing at the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
Four man rush by the way, which.
Speaker 7 (29:04):
Allows guys to play into those clouds and zone and
just sit back and just wait for the guy to cut.
You can catch it, but I'm tackling right and and
hopefully I tackling when the ball comes out. But eventually
I'm gonna be able to just jump a route because
I'm going to have this timing down so good that
I'm just gonna be there instead of the receiver. Right
(29:25):
start running the routes for the guys.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
J C.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
Horn all day long was a blanket.
Speaker 7 (29:32):
I mean I'm talking about not not not a blanket that.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
You get out of your closet.
Speaker 7 (29:37):
Okay, I'm talking about a blanket you Yeah, heavy blankets.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
Waited the fire blanket, That's what he was.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
You put the fire all day say, you're all searching
for it and you found it there.
Speaker 6 (29:58):
Well, Christian, get you some zippy ice and yeah, chill
out a little bit.
Speaker 5 (30:01):
So appreciate you doing after that game, right.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
Yes, sponsored by the Ice n.
Speaker 6 (30:06):
Yeah, it felt like summertime out there. Great reporting down
there today and never enjoyed the one. Thank you Kristin
Balboni joining us here and we've got much more to cup.
Speaker 5 (30:15):
Thirty to nothing.
Speaker 6 (30:15):
The Panthers win this game over the Atlanta Falcons and
you're listening to Panthers football.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
Back to the Panthers postgame Show live from Bank of
America Stadium, exclusively on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
All right, we're doing a show.
Speaker 5 (30:40):
We're had a lot more fun when when the Panthers win.
Speaker 4 (30:42):
Panthers are winning, people are taking selfies left and right.
Speaker 6 (30:45):
It's like we're the backdrop for the selfies that everyone
is doing. With our friend John and Stewart joining us here.
Speaker 5 (30:50):
Any time you get you not getting our picture for
some reason.
Speaker 4 (30:53):
No, it's like, well, if they did, we'll we cropped
out later.
Speaker 5 (30:56):
Well, photo shot out.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
It's like John bit Stewart were leading in. Hey, it's
a three of just too. That's cool. Yeah, that's good.
That's what I thought you were doing. We thought that's
what you were doing.
Speaker 6 (31:07):
Injury Updated brought to you by HRIM Health, doing more
to keep you moving, achieving, striving and at every agent
stage so you can live fully.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
JT. Sanders ankle injury went in the blue tent, came
out during the course of the game.
Speaker 6 (31:19):
Was the only known injury that we have at this
time from this particular game here and now we're going
to listen.
Speaker 4 (31:25):
Back to some of the highlights before we get back
to stew and Mike.
Speaker 6 (31:27):
Here but just four highlights from this game, and it
begins with the first drive. Nice solid drive capped off
by Bryce Young four yard touchdown.
Speaker 4 (31:35):
Run to make it seven to nothing Carolina.
Speaker 11 (31:40):
Two bahufferd the loone set back. Here's the snap play action,
Young looking for ruga rot plus to the outside. He's
got the corner. He's got a five to two for
the touchdown. Bryce Young takes it in from four yards out.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
And so seven nothing. Panthers would lead.
Speaker 6 (31:57):
Ryan Fitzgerald with the first of his three field goals
made it had nothing at halftime.
Speaker 4 (32:01):
This was a big moment in the game.
Speaker 6 (32:03):
Shaw Smith Wade with the pick six of the third quarter,
seventeen nothing, Panthers take the lead.
Speaker 11 (32:10):
Heennick's out of the gun here on scheck down at
eight for the sixteenth Now Pitts motions to the right.
Speaker 14 (32:15):
Pennicks the snap looking right now checks down.
Speaker 11 (32:18):
Yeah, accepted by the Buddy Richardson who walks in it.
Speaker 12 (32:22):
Pearl touch down, Shaw Smith Wade, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
So we got the That was the whataburger? What a
moment of the game.
Speaker 6 (32:31):
Grilling delicious food for seventy five years. What a burger
just like you like it. But we were not done
with thieves Avenue as later. Mike Jackson here with the
pickoff of Michael Pennocks Junior once again for pick number two.
Speaker 14 (32:46):
Shotgun snap on fourth down.
Speaker 12 (32:48):
Pennix fires intercepted here sideline. Mike Jackson, he's got the
forty midfield outs on the numbers, thirty five breaks at
tack for the thirty snaps on a gun, knowing go
down words, and now finally he puts out a bout.
Speaker 10 (33:03):
Have the thirty yard line.
Speaker 6 (33:06):
We'll talk to Jay stud a moment about what Mike
jack should have done in that situation.
Speaker 4 (33:09):
But one more highlight.
Speaker 6 (33:10):
First, Rico Dwell the final touchdown. This makes it twenty
seven to nothing in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 14 (33:17):
Dowdell is the deep back, Rice under center.
Speaker 11 (33:19):
But who is the only receiver Staff give to Dowbtell
Bargees across the goal.
Speaker 14 (33:24):
Line for a Panther touchdown.
Speaker 11 (33:26):
Ricodowdell with his first touchdown as a Panther.
Speaker 14 (33:30):
Twenty six nothing. It's Caroline on top.
Speaker 6 (33:34):
And of course one more field goal to make it
thirty to nothing. So Stu, you talked a little bit
earlier about you know, guys. Sometimes you know, obviously Mike
Jackson gets interceptions, he runs the ball back.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
Sometimes, what's it like as an offensive.
Speaker 6 (33:44):
Player, like a running back, when the other team intercepts
and you have to become a tackler when you're an
offensive guy.
Speaker 7 (33:49):
Oh, it's very odd, not gonna lie to you, but
but you get back to the fundamentals, right. You don't
you don't reach, you don't tackle with your arms and
all those types of things.
Speaker 2 (34:02):
You got to bring your body.
Speaker 7 (34:03):
So I've been in situations where I've had to tackle
and I've always made my tackle.
Speaker 2 (34:09):
So I'll just put it.
Speaker 4 (34:10):
Put it there.
Speaker 7 (34:11):
But you know, Michael Jackson there on that return, great
job with that interception, being in the right place at
the right time.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
And just keep running.
Speaker 5 (34:23):
That's the key.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Yeah, he stopped, and when you stop, you lose momentum.
Speaker 7 (34:28):
Guys catch up and you freak out. You've never done
it before. Your job is just to keep running. Whether
it's at a bounds. It's okay you might step out
of bounds, but.
Speaker 4 (34:36):
You don't want to go backwards.
Speaker 7 (34:38):
As a runner north and south. But I will say this,
as a running back, you love it I love it
when the defense doesn't score sometimes, especially down in the
red zone, down in the area where we should be
able to punch it in, because that gives me a
chance to get my touchdown right.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
And short, short, short and sure that right, that that
particular point in the game.
Speaker 7 (35:04):
Is a confident build, confidence builder for that offense and
the team in general is like, hey, we're on the
thirty yard line. We're gonna milk the clock.
Speaker 5 (35:13):
Yep, yeah, milk.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
They had nine plays eight nine or eight plays.
Speaker 8 (35:16):
Yeah, thirty yards and third play yards yeah, and it
was like four or five minutes, I think, and.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
It was just bruised. It was just bruising football with
ric o'dowdle.
Speaker 7 (35:23):
And I'm glad they you know, finished the drive off
with him for a touchdown, because uh, that's how that's
how you're supposed to play football.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Get a turnover.
Speaker 7 (35:34):
Defensive guy doesn't score, It's okay, he doesn't do that
every day.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Just give it to the guy that knows how to do.
Speaker 3 (35:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
It was, you know, better than better than a punt.
Speaker 8 (35:43):
And it was a momentum change too, And it gives
the offense a chance to drain the clock, like like
jayse du said, And then you know, one thing that
Marty Hernial was used to talk about is just confidence, right.
I mean, you have general confidence, but even within a game,
there's a different confidence level. And you can see the
confidence level of the team build with each successive series
where something positive was happening.
Speaker 7 (36:04):
Yeah, you know, special teams every single part of that game.
You know, we had the muff punt, but guess what
we're gonna still cover. Yeah, We're still gonna play absolutely
great football.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
Special teams wise.
Speaker 7 (36:18):
You know a lot of times when bad things happen,
you know, bad teams fall under pressure. You know, it's like, oh,
we didn't start off great, so now you're anticipating this
unrealistic viewpoint that, oh we got to score every time
here on out. I love the approach that they had
today with the coaching staff, which was, Hey, we're just
(36:38):
gonna go down there and play our ball.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
There was a moment where we kicked the field goal
and I'm like, uh, maybe we might want to go
for it.
Speaker 7 (36:46):
They kind of stink on the other side, but they
just took what they had, and they had what was.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
In front of them.
Speaker 7 (36:52):
You know, don't get too greedy, right, and just find
the confidence builders, the confidence stackers throughout that game, because
that's your job is to manage, manage the game, put
the put the game in, you know, in the hands
of your playmakers, in the hands of your leadership, uh
to make the right calls.
Speaker 4 (37:11):
One of our boys, we had four boys play football, U. R. D.
Speaker 6 (37:15):
Kel was a running back and they made him do
punt return for part of one season and he got
to where he got so nervous about that aspect of
the game. He would let the ball bounce. We'd always
act to he couldn't quite get there, so it bounce
and then he would catch it. How hard is it
being a punt retard? Did you ever have to do
that in your career?
Speaker 3 (37:31):
No? I did not.
Speaker 7 (37:32):
I tried it in college, but not in a game.
But I tried it during practice and I did not
like it because it's it's a situation where you have
you have to.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
Be kind of kuku to be a punk turner.
Speaker 3 (37:46):
Pling a lot to you.
Speaker 7 (37:47):
There's guys, imagine going outside, opening your garage and getting
in your car while dodging bullets, okay, like your eyes
looking up with your eyes looking up at the sky
and waiting for the keys to jump and drop into
your lad and I don't know, but you know, or what,
(38:09):
maybe that's a better walking across the street while there's
the like thousands of cars going past you every day
and looking up and not looking left or right right.
Speaker 2 (38:20):
That's what it feels like being a punt returner.
Speaker 7 (38:23):
It's so unsafe, and it's such a pivotal point in
the game because if you don't get it right, if
you don't have a guy that's fearless that can actually
focus in and dial in on the ball and.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
Catch it.
Speaker 7 (38:36):
Under all the pressure on everybody knows that you're getting
the ball.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
And then the sun might be shining right in your.
Speaker 7 (38:43):
Eye whatever it is, glares you gotta catch it because
if not, it's exactly what happened today. We missed no
opportunity to have a particular drive, but also field position
changes to where the Falcons should have scored.
Speaker 6 (39:00):
Luckily they missed another field goal. But it's not even
to get out of jail free Kardling. If you do
the fair catch sign, you still have to catch the ball. Sure,
you still have.
Speaker 4 (39:07):
To do the hardest thing.
Speaker 6 (39:08):
Even if you say don't hit me, you still have
to catch the ball. While making that split decision. So
it's a difficult position for Travis Etn.
Speaker 3 (39:15):
To be end.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
I'm a competitor. I'm highly competitive.
Speaker 7 (39:17):
I'm highly confident in myself, but I'm very aware I
am not a punt return.
Speaker 4 (39:22):
Yeah, as a unique skill set that you go work hard.
Speaker 5 (39:24):
That's a big thing in life too.
Speaker 8 (39:25):
Sometimes you got to know what your skill set is
and not to do certain parts of a job because
they don't line up with what you do.
Speaker 4 (39:30):
Yeah, all right, So each year we'll get killing.
Speaker 5 (39:33):
People, Jim. We're educating the people, not just football.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
That's right, and we're going to talk about it and
not get hit by eleven people while there's taking it all.
Speaker 6 (39:40):
There's times that we do this post game show you
feel like eleven people want to hit you, depending on
how the game went.
Speaker 4 (39:44):
Still to come, we're gonna hear from.
Speaker 6 (39:45):
Coach Canals, We're gonna hear from Luke and Jake and
a Niche in the booth and giving our scoreboard update
before we get out of here, or in the postgame
show from the fifth quarter coming up here at Bank
of America Stadium, thirty to nothing. Pathers win over the
Atlanta Falcons on the Carolina Pathers Ready Network. Panthers got
(40:07):
a pair of interceptions, including a pick six by Shaw
Smith Wade thirty to nothing. They win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
Today.
Speaker 6 (40:14):
We say it's very rare to get a shout out
by any team in the NFL, but the defense did
it today. And Jonathan Stewart with Mike and myself here
on the broadcast here, we had Charles Johnson sitting in
earlier as well, and they both referenced Derek Brown, what
a great game he had, the presence that he brings
with his return.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
As he joins the guys in the boots, we're.
Speaker 11 (40:31):
Joined by Panthers d lineman, Derek Brown, Derek, and he's
with you. Incredible defensive performance. What do you think contributed
to what you guys were able to do defensively today?
Speaker 15 (40:42):
I think, man, we were able to limit the mistakes
and be able to get out here and execute at
a high level. You know, that's what we've been fighting
to practice for in these last three weeks and to
be able to see it come to fruition, I mean,
that was a great thing today.
Speaker 10 (40:53):
Hey, Derek, is Jake here?
Speaker 16 (40:56):
I think this is two weeks in a row our
defense has played extremely well. Last week against Arizona, I
think it got overshadowed because the ten nothing deficit and
then but I just the physicality, it just seems like
it's a lot more present as compared to week one.
Did something happen after week one or is it just
getting more comfortable with all the new pieces we have?
Speaker 15 (41:17):
Man, I would say, you know, it's been in place
since the you know, it's been a place since we
did camp. You know, I think coming out in Jacksonville,
you know, it just it was one of those showings
where we had a few players that really killed us.
But you know, watching the tape, I felt out we
were physical and aggressive. And then now for us to
be able to bring that physicality to fill with limiting
factor or limited limited mistakes, I mean that's been that's
(41:38):
been the biggest difference.
Speaker 10 (41:40):
Yeah, Derek Luke here, congrats on a great win.
Speaker 17 (41:43):
What do you guys have to do to keep this
keep this energy in this physicality moving forward the next
week up there in New England.
Speaker 15 (41:49):
Man, you know, not take debate right, so not to
celebrate this for too long and get back to it tomorrow.
Getting their break down the film honestly, and you know,
be able to continue to success. I mean we got
to be able to execute it high level, yeah, and
play physical and you know, just keep doing what we
do right. So we put it on tapes and now
we got to keep being able to be consistently dominant.
Speaker 10 (42:08):
Okay, I want to.
Speaker 16 (42:08):
Ask about the shutout. We're up here in the box
and Luke never quit talking about it. Don't talk about
a shutout. He didn't want to talk about it. So
on the sidelines, whenever some of the reserves went in,
did y'all make sure that they know they had to
preserve the shutout?
Speaker 3 (42:22):
Oh?
Speaker 15 (42:22):
Man, I think when we came in in a halftime
and it was ten zero, everybody in the builder knew
what was that stake. To be able to have a shutout,
they come so rarely, so to be able to get one,
it's one of those things that you know, you got
to be able to cherish but also take care of it.
They were pushing the ball there and then got real
worried that they were gonna they called Tom out. So
I definitely knew he wanted to kick the field goal.
So it was nice to get that fumbled the end
and go ahead and put this thing away.
Speaker 10 (42:42):
Derek, I can only.
Speaker 11 (42:43):
Imagine how tough it had to be for you last
year watching from the sidelines and the defense took a
lot of hits in the media and from around the league.
But to have this kind of performance, what does it
say about what this defense can be in twenty twenty five?
Speaker 3 (42:58):
Man?
Speaker 15 (42:58):
This guy's a limit, right, And you know a lot
of people been you know, talking and talking and saying
what they had to say about us for the last
two weeks. But you know, as like I said, we
can't take the fool's gold. You know, they'll be pumping
you up all week and then you know, as soon
as you do something wrong to go back to how
it was.
Speaker 3 (43:10):
So, I mean, it's for us.
Speaker 15 (43:11):
It is not being consistent, staying together in this building
and you know, continue to block out the outside and
you know, continue to do what this team can do.
Speaker 11 (43:19):
All right, Panthers Pro Bowl defensive lineman Derek Brown, Thanks Derek,
appreciate y'all?
Speaker 3 (43:24):
Was it?
Speaker 4 (43:25):
Nick Saban used to call it a rat poison. Eat
the cheese the fools goals.
Speaker 5 (43:29):
Farseldom thinks that don't eat.
Speaker 2 (43:30):
The cheese, block off the noise.
Speaker 6 (43:32):
Yeah, So what what's it like as a player when
you go off at then oh and true start last
year they obviously had similar situation getting off. As far
as I know, you're not just scanning your social media
all the time and pining over it, but you know,
focusing because there are certain days of the week where
there's player interviews in locker rooms open to the reporters
and so forth that you guys have to be accountable
(43:53):
at a time where you're just trying to get your
job done every day.
Speaker 7 (43:56):
Yeah, I'm not gonna lie man, when I when I played,
I stayed in the train any room the whole entire time.
Speaker 3 (44:02):
Media came into it.
Speaker 7 (44:07):
It's interesting to be on this side of things and whatnot,
which is the reason why, like you know, I'm in
this space as you know, doing podcasts the radio stuff,
and I get you know, veteran guys on, I get
current guys on. I want to be a player friendly
voice and no matter what, there's a trust there because
to his point, he has to as a player, you
(44:29):
have to guard your mind and your heart right, but
more importantly your mind because throughout the week you can
easily get you.
Speaker 2 (44:36):
Know, kind of frantic. As far as what are they
saying about us today?
Speaker 4 (44:41):
Right?
Speaker 2 (44:41):
We just want so what do you what do you
have to say about us right now? And you can
make it. You know, this like villain versus hero thing
real quick in your mind, when really it's we're all.
We're all in this together. We just have different roles.
Speaker 7 (44:57):
The fans are supposed to be there to cheer, are
you wrong? They're also supposed to be there.
Speaker 2 (45:02):
To hold you accountable to a certain extent.
Speaker 7 (45:04):
Right, and then as far as a player, you're supposed
to go out there and perform. So whatever it is
that's going to keep your mind away from drifting from
preparing throughout the week, from from being able to show
up on game day in a confident manner, having the
right things on your mind, keeping the main thing, the
main thing, that's your job.
Speaker 2 (45:24):
And then coaches coach.
Speaker 8 (45:26):
Yeah, is it harder? I don't harder or easier, it's
the right way to phrase this. But like talking to
the media after the game versus talking on like a Wednesday,
do you feel like you're more prepared on like a
Wednesday because you're more time to think about it.
Speaker 7 (45:38):
Or actually way more prepared on a Wednesday than after
a game. Especially after a loss. It's like, hey, but
you had a bad game. I remember I had a
game against the Buccaneers and I had like two fumbles.
Speaker 2 (45:51):
And I think we still wan?
Speaker 5 (45:54):
Yeah, because way I can.
Speaker 1 (45:55):
But but.
Speaker 7 (46:00):
Reporter comes over, not going to say their names, but like, hey,
so what was going through your mind there? When you like,
those are stupid questions. I'm not gonna lie to you,
Like what's going through your mind when you fumble the ball? Well, idiot,
what's going through my mind?
Speaker 10 (46:17):
Why did you?
Speaker 4 (46:20):
I'll tell you what. I was happy about it.
Speaker 7 (46:23):
But so there's ways in which post game and those
on a Sunday where it's like you're an idiot and
I'm actually still.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
Kind of pissed off.
Speaker 3 (46:34):
Yea.
Speaker 7 (46:35):
As opposed to Wednesday, you have a couple more days
to just kind of dial back, talk to your coach,
watch films, see what actually happened Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (46:42):
We can talk about it.
Speaker 6 (46:44):
It'd be funny if you like fire back, Like, yeah,
I noticed the typo that story you had.
Speaker 5 (46:48):
Yeah, what were you thinking when you forgot to put
relation period?
Speaker 3 (46:51):
You deleted?
Speaker 4 (46:52):
You deleted that tweet and you wrote what were you think?
What was going through your mind?
Speaker 3 (46:56):
Right then?
Speaker 2 (46:56):
What was you going through your What was going through
your mind when you when you stole a picture from
that one guy?
Speaker 4 (47:03):
We're not to be credit, So yeah, what's to deal
with you and emojis? Do you feel like you over
use any emotions?
Speaker 3 (47:10):
Yeah? Is it too much? All right?
Speaker 4 (47:11):
When we come back, we'll.
Speaker 6 (47:12):
Here from the coach Dave Canalis as we continue to
talk about the Panthers win. Here the fifth quarter take
a place at Bank of America Stadium. Carolina wins it
by a score of thirty to nothing.
Speaker 1 (47:22):
Back to chimzuk Line from Bank of America Stadium with
the Panthers postgame show exclusively on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 6 (47:35):
All right, Jim, along with Mike and Jonathan Stewart, here
was started. Back to the booth now and Panthers win
thirty to nothing. Here from the coach Dave Canalis after
Carolina's first victory of the season.
Speaker 11 (47:44):
We're here with Panthers head coach Dave Canalis. First win
of the season. Dave, let's start with the defense. Describe
the performance of the d today.
Speaker 18 (47:53):
Great communication and great execution of a run plan. The
guys were tied in together like a stream. They played
hard set edges. They were disciplined about the gaps we
tackled well. And I'm sure there's gonna be some things
that you know, we'll look at and want to fit better.
But I just think about the uh, this group playing together,
the more time we have together to play, to talk,
(48:15):
to fit things up, to troubleshoot between series. I love
the focus of the group and the way they finished
and one, you know, on first down, which gives us
more passops to rush the passer, affect the passer, and
then that's when you can get the ball back.
Speaker 11 (48:27):
Dave, I know you said this week starting better was
kind of a point of emphasis that first offensive series
going down the field scoring a touchdown. What sort of
tone setter was that?
Speaker 3 (48:40):
It was great.
Speaker 10 (48:41):
It's a great feeling.
Speaker 18 (48:42):
It's the execution that we expect out of our group,
and it starts with Bryce, and it starts with you know,
getting us, getting us up there and making sure we're
getting to the right play based on what they're doing.
They did some really challenging stuff with some different personnels,
and we handled it, you know, pretty smoothly, and I
thought just finding its completions, you know, playing in rhythm
to that first drive.
Speaker 16 (49:01):
Hey, coach is Jake, congrats on the win. It's certainly
fun to see, especially.
Speaker 10 (49:06):
Shut out with a division rivals.
Speaker 16 (49:09):
So my question is this offensively the first time this
year I've seen a Dave Canalis offense in the second
half in essence, right, because we've been one dimensional yep.
So the undercenter in Cuba dotting the I, it just
seemed like he saw holes and hit. It was that
something that has been in the works and we haven't
seen it yet because of how our first two games
(49:30):
have gone.
Speaker 18 (49:30):
Absolutely, Jake, that's the vision that I have for our
team to play together, to play great defense, win first down,
win first and ten by knocking the run out and
giving us an ability to balance things out, to look
at the run game, to evaluate what passes do we
have off of it in the play action game, and
also just being able to spread it out and find completions.
(49:52):
You know, that whole balance right there. It makes you
a really solid, well rounded offense. But it's all phases, right,
It's filled position with the special teams and what a
great job Ryan did of pinning them back pretty deeply
on some kickoffs, getting the ball on the ground, you know,
and then the defense giving us good fields to work with,
so it all ties in together and I was so
happy to see, you know, all three phases play that way.
Speaker 17 (50:15):
Yeah, Coach, he kind of took the words out of
my mouth a little bit there. With Ryan Fitzgerald, just
the job he did today with not only a fueld goals,
but just finding dead space on those kickoffs and you
don't think about it a ton, but they started the
ball on the negative, the minus ten, the minus ten,
the minus fourteen, the minus nine, the minus nine, the
minus twenty. Just all really good jobs by him and
Tracy and talking about ideas kicking that ball to dead
(50:38):
space on the field.
Speaker 18 (50:39):
Absolutely it was. It was a great plan and it's risky,
but Ryan has just continued to grow with his arsenal
and the kicks that he has in his toolbox, and
so it's stuff that we've worked on in practice, and
you know, I'm glad that we went for it in
some of those situations to try to, you know, find
that space and take advantage of long fields.
Speaker 11 (50:58):
Dave enjoyed this one, and Joyce, sweet Caroline, and we'll
talk to you one day, all right, Thanks guys.
Speaker 6 (51:04):
All right, and you saw Jay Stew's eyes light up
and coach starts talk about running the ball there.
Speaker 4 (51:09):
Yeah, that's your topic.
Speaker 8 (51:10):
No, football doesn't really change, even though it's a lot
of different things going on, but spread like, you still
got to stop the run and you got to be
able to run the ball.
Speaker 7 (51:17):
Yeah, you got to run the ball to game yards
and you have to do it well. And when we
are able to do it underneath the center, like Jake
was talking about, Dave, you know that's music to my
ears because if you're running back and you can line
up three extra yards, giving yourself a good six and
(51:37):
a half seven yards to pick up, you know, a
visual of what the line of scrimmage looks like.
Speaker 2 (51:45):
You know, that's a lot of time.
Speaker 7 (51:46):
And we talk all the time about slow too fast through,
which means slow to the line of scrimmage. And then
you hit it once it's there, once whatever you see,
once you get there, you got to hit it. And
you know that's that's Tupa's best game when he's able
to go up there, give a little bit of slow
impression filling it out, and then he sees it and
then he's not turning back, and that's the best football.
(52:10):
That I've seen as far as you know, the intentionality
to this ground game.
Speaker 6 (52:15):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (52:16):
And I honestly think.
Speaker 7 (52:17):
Cade Mays being in the position that he's in right now,
I think his game actually fits downhill run right, you
got a bigger body cover up a guy and I
think it was a third the third series, we ran
a gap scheme and I haven't really seen a lot
of gap scheme and Truba picked up about seven yards
(52:42):
and it was on the Falcons side of the field,
right And and I just love you know that we're
starting to pick up this momentum, this identity that matches
our defense. The defense, like Jake said, last week in Arizona,
we played they played pretty good and they just didn't
have any help on the other side of the ball.
(53:02):
It's so late now we're starting to see this complimentary football.
What you're talking about is and it matches the intensity.
Hit guys in the face every single play. Allow you know,
the play designs to be matched up that way on
offense to where Rico Dado and Tuva guys that want
to hit people across the face, let them do it.
Speaker 3 (53:25):
Love it.
Speaker 6 (53:25):
And I think Etn is gonna be part of that
as a season wears on as well for the rookie
as to as too. We have one more break, one
more segment to do before we do any of that.
Thought's got to pause ten seconds for station identification. I'm
the Carolina Panthers Radio Network, all right, So when we
come back, we'll hear from the guys, get their final
thoughts from the booth. Well, but pick our hardest working
player of the game.
Speaker 4 (53:46):
Thirty to nothing. The Panthers win today over the Atlanta Falcons.
Speaker 1 (53:49):
The Panthers postgame show continues live from Bank of America Citio,
exclusively on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 6 (54:00):
All right, final segment here, Panthers big win over the
Atlanta Falcons, thirty to nothing. Let's hear what a niche
Jake and Luke and their final thoughts were about this.
Speaker 11 (54:08):
One final score from Bank of America Stadium, Carolina thirty
Atlanta nothing. This was a Falcons team that came into
this game with some momentum. They waxed the Vikings on
Sunday night. They had the run game. There was talk
of the renewed Atlanta pass rush. How would Carolina handle it?
(54:28):
Robert Hunt is out, Austin Corbett is out, Xavier Leget
was out. Panthers were banged up, Luke, they were zero
and two, they were reeling. They come home and they
smacked Atlanta good. It started on their very first drive
with a touchdown. But the defense, which has been so
(54:49):
maligned over the last year and change, the defense played
their best game in a long time.
Speaker 17 (54:55):
I just thought we were I thought our energy and
our physicality were phenomenal today. And you know what that
It's one thing that you always talk about is that's
a decision that you make before the game gets start.
You make a decision to play with intensity and attitude,
and you make a decision to play physical, and you
also make a decision to say, hey.
Speaker 10 (55:12):
Enough is enough. We're in front of our home crowd.
We got to put our best foot forward. And I
thought we were physical.
Speaker 3 (55:18):
We didn't.
Speaker 17 (55:18):
We weren't super active on the stat sheet. Russ and
the passer, but Michael Pennix was never was never comfortable.
Whether it was Derek Brown, whether it was DJ Wanam,
whether it was Princely Nick s Gordon. There was pressure
on the quarterback constantly. I thought we were playing really
tight in the secondary on pass routes. Obviously the two
the two interceptions. I thought JC was really good on
(55:41):
the other side, just running routes for these receivers, and
I thought we tackled a lot better today. And obviously
with Bijon Robinson the explosiveness that he had, I thought
we re established the line of scrimmage in the run game.
It was just a good, physical attitude type defensive game
that you're looking to have, especially in your first game
at home.
Speaker 11 (55:58):
And Jake, you can feel the relief, the exhale, the
collective exhale by this fan base, by this crowd. There
was a lot of positive buzz around this team coming
into the season. How they can take the next step.
First two games on the road didn't go as plan,
but to have this kind of performance, I think that
(56:21):
can cure a lot of Al's Obviously you have to
go build on it. But they did a lot of
good things on both sides of the ball today. Coming
up with three turnovers, Shaw Smith, Wade the pick six.
You got a kicker who looks like he's gonna be
the real deal too in Ryan Fitzgerald.
Speaker 16 (56:37):
Yeah, listen, I just you can't say enough about coming
back home. You just felt like Jacksonville. You never gave
yourself a chance. And that was the frustrating thing. And
I said it after the game. They did Jacksonville. They
didn't beat us. We beat ourselves. They just didn't lose it.
And then you spot ten points last week and we
(56:58):
fight out kind of fighting claw and I get a
text from Luke after we recovered the onside kick in
Arizona last week and he's like, oh my gosh, we're
gonna win this game.
Speaker 10 (57:06):
I mean, that's what you felt.
Speaker 16 (57:08):
And so we were able to carry it over against
the Vision opponent at home, and we just came out
and played I think defense. I think they played the
same as they did last week. They came out physical,
ready to play. We called some turnovers offensively.
Speaker 10 (57:23):
I liked what we did.
Speaker 16 (57:25):
We didn't turn it over on offense, right, we had
one muff punt, but we left so much out there
on offense.
Speaker 10 (57:30):
That's the thing that you can take to me, Like, guys,
this could have been forty five.
Speaker 16 (57:35):
Have been ugly. We've had many opportunities. T Mac only
had three catches, eight targets. But he is a problem
because the pass interference call. I mean they grabbing him
and he might have had a Catcher too, that he
feels he should have caught today. I think Bryce is
gonna have a couple of pass plays he wants back
a couple of hundred infro in the first half. We
had a two minute drive that wasn't clean at all
(57:56):
at the end of the first half. So I'm bringing
this up because as much good things as we did today,
we left so much more out on the field, and
that's encouraging to me. Like Dave Canalis, Okay, I know
what you want to do now a little bit more.
I like that we're under center running the football. Maybe
that's been in the game plan the first two weeks
that we never saw it because we never could get
(58:16):
to it in the second half. Rico' dadle, how he
runs with the power and physicality. There's so many things
that we just we didn't know yet about this offense
because we played what a quarter and a half or whatnot,
and then next thing you know, the game's out of region.
Speaker 10 (58:31):
We one dimensional and.
Speaker 14 (58:32):
Luke, you don't want to get too far ahead of yourself.
Speaker 11 (58:34):
But New England next week, then a reeling Miami team
coming to Bank of America Stadium Dallas is a traveling drama.
Act like there are some chances here over the next
few weeks to build off of this and get on
a bit of a roll.
Speaker 17 (58:51):
Well, absolutely, you know you said the same thing about
New England and then Miami coming back.
Speaker 10 (58:55):
They've taken a lot of heat.
Speaker 17 (58:56):
And I think we saw with the recipe for successes
with this team and what we're capable of in the
sense of how we played compliment complimentary football. Today, Mike
Jack makes a big pick, we go down instead of
getting a field goal, we punch it in for a touchdown.
Ryan Fitzgerald all day kicking the ball both on long
field goals and on special teams on kickoffs, pinning them
back deep. We had the muffed punt, but the defense
(59:17):
was able to stand up, knock him back, get him
out of field goal rains ultimately missed the field goal.
And then I just think things like punt coverage, we
go down there, we make big impact plays at the
end of the half and limit punt return yarded. So
that's what good teams do, and maybe we're starting to see, hey,
we're we could potentially be a good team.
Speaker 10 (59:35):
We won the turnover battle today. We force some turnovers.
Speaker 17 (59:38):
All three phases played really well, and like you said,
a niche Drake May, obviously they're having a tough one
against Pittsburgh. Today, we go up there into Foxborough, we
can go get a win there, and then when we
got Miami the following week at home again with this crowd,
I expect a bigger crowd the next time we're back
at home because we put a show on today. So
I think I'm excited for these next couple of weeks
for what this team is capable of.
Speaker 11 (59:59):
Now Miami's zoning free, the Patriots are losing to the
Steelers as we speak, No, that game's gone final, So
New England. I just lost to Pittsburgh. This is a
Carolina team that can certainly build off of this. And
you know, one last point, Jake, I think you got
to give some credit here to to Tracy Smith, the
special teams coach. The three field goals by Ryan Fitzgerald
(01:00:21):
were one thing, but what Luke talked about the kickoffs
today were a game changer in terms of field position.
Speaker 16 (01:00:28):
And I want to I'd like to ask, like some
of these kicks I'm watching and it's the ball instead
of the helicopter, it's it's it's.
Speaker 10 (01:00:37):
Almost like it's spinning like a billiard shot.
Speaker 16 (01:00:40):
I'm not sure that's he's planning to do that, but
it's so effective because Atlanta, they'd never caught anything clean usually, Okay,
here's the bounce, catch it off the bounce, Well, it
was spin opposite. And yeah, and not only that, I'm
gonna go back to Dala Von Campbell.
Speaker 10 (01:00:55):
We didn't.
Speaker 16 (01:00:56):
We struggled with gunners, and I think we were privy
to that information prior to some of the preseason games
and production meetings.
Speaker 10 (01:01:02):
They talked about the special teams. Hey, we don't have,
we don't have.
Speaker 16 (01:01:05):
We don't know who our gunners are yet, and that's
something that okay, we're waiting to see. Well, great job
by the front office of claiming this guy from South
Carolina right off of Waivers when saying the Chargers let
him go, but watching him run down the field, that's
what a gunner is supposed to do, and he had
a huge impact on one of the plays.
Speaker 3 (01:01:24):
Today.
Speaker 10 (01:01:24):
Those things carry over and.
Speaker 16 (01:01:26):
I just think, you know so many question mark special
teams while is coming into the season, but today a
lot of it was answered.
Speaker 10 (01:01:33):
Fitzgerald. Not only the field goals, but.
Speaker 11 (01:01:35):
The kickoffs all off season. You heard the refrain. This
is our layer. No birds allowed in the Panthers Layer.
Carolina thirty at lant to nothing. Your final score, first
win of the season for the hometown Panthers.
Speaker 6 (01:01:50):
All right, final thoughts here now from Jay stew with
the Mike and Jim. Here we got the hardest working
player of the game, presented by sun Belt Reynolds, official
rental equipment partner of the ROL line of Panthers, Jay Stu.
On a day where there was a shutout, there were
great special teams. There were thirty points put up on
the board collectively by the squad. Who is your hardest
working player today? We lost his microphone.
Speaker 4 (01:02:14):
Do you have an engineer?
Speaker 2 (01:02:17):
Oh yeah, I'm gonna hardest working player.
Speaker 7 (01:02:23):
I'm gonna say, Man, there's so many good I'm gonna
say Trayvon morag just because you know, he's a guy
that we expect.
Speaker 2 (01:02:30):
I expected to see a guy.
Speaker 7 (01:02:32):
Come in at safety and be safety presence, meaning if
he's on the field, I'm not worried about things getting
behind behind us. I'm not worried about miss tackles. I'm
seeing him flying around on the you know, he got
a he got a quarterback, hit on on the b
gap presence there early on in the game, and then
(01:02:53):
I'm seeing him, you know, basically try to take the
head off of you know, Drake London on the sideline right,
you know, attacking their best players, a guy that's set
in the tone on defense, and I think he did
exactly that.
Speaker 5 (01:03:07):
For me, it's maybe plural.
Speaker 8 (01:03:08):
I think it's the defensive line, and if I have
to pick a player, I think it's Derek Brown, and
then the whole defensive line. Just the pressure Panics was
uncomfortable all day, and this defense forced Atlanta changed quarterbacks.
I mean, they'd kind of put the And that's the
other thing that's got to be a big thing for
defense is when the other team kind of puts the
white flag up and says, we've got to change our quarterback.
So credit to the defensive line.
Speaker 4 (01:03:30):
I'm gonna go Shaw Smith Wade.
Speaker 6 (01:03:31):
Anytime a defender puts points on the board directly, that's
a good day. He had five tackles, and I remember
some other big hits that he made in the open
field as part of those five tackles that he had
today too, So all part of not only pitching the
shutout but also putting points on the board and that
was that was huge.
Speaker 4 (01:03:45):
That made it seventeen nothing from a ten to nothing game.
Speaker 6 (01:03:47):
That really felt like at that moment kind of put
the game out of reach, you know, not officially, but
realistically at that point for the Panthers. Thanks to our
crew Harold Hamrick, Jerry Dawd, Wendell Black, David Eads, and
Matt Hogan, Viban Putman along with the Ben Blevins, Amy Martin,
Eric Phileman, Christen Balboni.
Speaker 4 (01:04:02):
And David Langton Jay Sduo. Thanks for hanging out man,
that was a lot of fun.
Speaker 7 (01:04:05):
Fund thank you day to do a postcape show. Yeah,
it's always time when we win.
Speaker 6 (01:04:09):
Charles Johnson dropping by, appreciate him as well, and the
keep pounding drummer today again in the final score, Panthers
win over Atlanta thirty to nothing.
