Speaker 1 (00:03):
Now to Chim Zoke with the Panthers postgame show exclusively
on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Ad it the whole way.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Carolina Panthers jumped out to a zero seventeen lead and
then pot their way back and then get the win.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
And what a finish. It was down to the wire
twenty seven to twenty four.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Carolina began that comeback in the first half, got it
to seventeen ten at halftime, come back and finish it
off taking the lead twice. Jim Zochi, Mike Pachico, Jonathan
Stewart with you and Mike. That was a showed a
lot from a team that's been down that they grabbed
the lead, give up the big pass to waddle, relinquish
the lead, and come back knowing they had to get
(00:47):
a touchdown and they were able to get that and
then close the game out from there.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
Yeah, in a comeback win, but it felt like even
though they were only down ten and a half, just
the momentum swings. Jasew that this game had early on
the fumble, the interception and the way that the Dolphins
were marching down the field, but then in the second
half it became kind of a totally different. It really
was a table of two different halves, different game, and
(01:11):
then Rico o'donald just takes over and unfored well, I
guess you're probably okay with it, but he ties your
single game rushing record with two hundred and six yards.
Speaker 5 (01:22):
Yeah, you know what I saw today was this defense.
First of all, they actually played pretty solid in the
first half. I know the scoreboard doesn't say much, but
they played what they were told to play, which was zone.
And what they didn't do a good job of was
finding where Waller was.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yep. And when you.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
Don't figure out where he is, he's the guy that's
going to control the passing game in the middle of
the field. He's going to control those intermediate throws. And
that's exactly what they were doing. He was basically finding
holes in the gaps of the zone defense and they
were capitalizing on that. But most importantly, on offense, we're
giving him more opportunities to do so. The time of
his essen was out of outrageous because we couldn't hold
(02:04):
on to the ball.
Speaker 6 (02:05):
We were shooting ourselves in the foot.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
The second half, it's all about the identity shift.
Speaker 6 (02:13):
Trust what you're capable of.
Speaker 5 (02:15):
The defense plays solid football, smash mouth football. The linebackers
played the best game that I've seen them play all year.
Speaker 6 (02:24):
And that's what we've been wanting. We wanted.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
We just need these guys to step up and just
run down feel and put your face mask on another
person's face mask while they're on the ground. Okay, and
then Trevor and then uh rico' daddle. Rico' daddle is
what this Panthers offense and what this Panthers organization it
should be about, which is smouth, smash mouth football.
Speaker 6 (02:48):
Run downhill.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
He doesn't dance, he doesn't pat his feet, he makes
one cut and he gets upfield north and south running.
I enjoyed my I enjoyed it. I enjoyed watching every
bit of it.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Into Johnson's point, Jim, the defense and of course you
know Miami's one and four for a reason, but helped them.
The Panthers defense held them to just nineteen yards rushing,
which is the second lowest in team history just in
yards rush.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
So just to look at both sides of how teams did, now,
I will say Miami's not a great run stopping team.
They were thirtieth coming in, But what a great game
plan right to take advantage of that and keep pounding
that until they stop you, which they didn't, and then
for them not to be able to run the ball.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
I mean, it was what you was talking about, stop the.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Run, run the ball.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
And it was a close game, but it paid off.
And honestly, Stu, if not for those two early turnovers
in the game, Panthers probably win this one very comfortably
as it turns out, but they had to dig out
of that hole of what happened on the first couple possessions.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
I mean, this is a confidence builder for the whole
organization in my opinion, because, Yeah, last week we went
out there to the New England Patriot Territory and we
didn't play a good football game.
Speaker 6 (03:52):
Let's just call it what it was.
Speaker 5 (03:53):
We had basically the reverse of what we had going
on against Atlanta. We showed up today with the the
plan which was exposed the weaknesses of our opponent. The
better teams do that really well. We shot ourselves in
the fold with those two turnovers early on, and what
we did well was re rallied. We rallied. We had
(04:15):
an answer to, you know, the woes. A lot of
times bad teams don't find a way to come back after,
you know, a seventeen point deficit, a seventeen point deficit,
it's hard to do in the NFL. And shout out
to Bryce Young because yes, he was the contributor to
those those turnovers, and he had the enough, he had
(04:37):
enough poise, and Dave Canela has had enough trust in
the game plan. You know, we talked earlier before the game,
you know, what is the game plan? Are we going
to stick to it when things get rough and rattled
or are we going to try to jump ship and
try to find other plans and you know, pick through
next week's plan or last week's plan.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
No, they stick. They stuck to the plan.
Speaker 5 (04:58):
And whenever we started off the drives within tent to
run the ball, that's where we scored it.
Speaker 6 (05:05):
We scored our.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
Points when we were making sure that we were moving
the chains with Rico Dado in company.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
And it kind of reminded me a little bit, Jim.
It was a totally different style on how they did it,
but it was very similar. Comeback to the two thousand
and three season against Jacksonville when the Panthers were down, remember,
and then they had the quarterback change and then they
come back and they won that game late.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
In the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
And you mentioned Darren Waller five catches seventy eight yards
a touchdown the first half. He didn't get a target
in the second half like he They figured it out
because we've struggled against tight ends with the safety defenders
all season long.
Speaker 6 (05:37):
Yeah, I think you know MOREGG shout out to him.
Speaker 7 (05:41):
Huh.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
Safety play is something that must be a factor in
every single game. And the way he was able to
come up and he had three tackles.
Speaker 6 (05:51):
For losses three. Now I think we had eight as
a team.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
Probably got at the one point, That's what I was tracking.
It was eight tackles for loss. I don't know what
we ended up with. But when you have physical safety
play guys that are fast enough to cover and physical
enough to cover big targets like Darren Waller. Darren Waller
is a physical specimen. I mean, he's as big as
they come. He is exactly what you look for when
(06:16):
you're going to a combine. He has all the measurables,
has all the talent, and he has the special awareness
to be open. Given the opportunity to play z own,
you have to be aware of where he is though.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Yeah, all it was fun to watch the turnaround and,
as Stu said, a confidence builder.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Mike, So we'll get to all of that.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
We'll hear from coach Dave Canals, we'll hear from some
of the players, we'll listen back to some of the highlights,
all part of it. Mike's got a scoreboard update coming
for you next as we get into the afternoon games. Today,
the Panthers win twenty seven to twenty four over the
Miami Dolphins. Is the post game show and the Carolina
Panthers Radio Network. All right, as we continue on the
(06:58):
postgame show, welcome back on to the fifth quarter here
in the North Lounge.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Jim Zochi, Mike Pachico, Jaffitt, Sewort.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
We're now joined by the keep pounding drummer today, one
of them, Mike Rutcker, Mike Rock.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Good timing. What is data pick to come? I like it.
Speaker 8 (07:11):
I like to think that hitting that drum was just
an excell little little thing that pushed.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
The stole on the edge. So I like it.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
At that time of the game, it was needed. Yes,
it came back, came back twice to take that lead.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
What was it like to come back and see the
newest edition of the Panthers what they were able to do.
You know, it's good.
Speaker 8 (07:27):
It's good to get guys in the building that you
haven't seen since two thousand and one, right, and for
them to be in the stadium, and obviously to get
the win is awesome. But you know, it's just been
a great weekend to see some of the fellas in
the fellowship and I.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
Think, Mike, it was also great that this kind of
had it was a little bit of throwback feel to
the two thousand and three season. This reminded me a
lot of that Jacksonville game, differently in how the team
came back, but kind of a similar outcome.
Speaker 8 (07:53):
Yeah, you know, you know, even going back to that
Jacksonville game, you didn't start art, you didn't start right,
and that's what we've always preached, just not necessarily how
you start, but it's how you finish. You'd like to
start well, but kind of struggle coming out the gates,
but found the footing and kept swinging, kept pounding and
found a way to get the win.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
Hey, Mike, how much pride does a defensive line take
for getting covered sacks?
Speaker 8 (08:17):
You know, it's one of those stats, that really doesn't
show up a lot. But you know, when when you're
when you're doing you know what you're supposed to do,
you do go and at the end of the game
and tell guys like, hey, thank you, because that's something
that doesn't show up. But you know when you look
at film tomorrow morning, that's.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
What that was.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Yeah, Because when you know, when your defensive game plan
is to basically sit back and zone and let things
come to you, it does take for a really solid
defensive line to get physical upfront. Derek Brown, Nick Gordon
and company. I mean it was a group effort throughout
the whole entire day. But seeing guys like Nick Gordon,
(08:59):
a rookie coming in and making a case for havoc
every time I seen him on the field, he's doing
something is.
Speaker 8 (09:07):
Yes, And I think that's what you're looking for from
your your front front seven and your front four or
front three is to cause havoc.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Right.
Speaker 8 (09:15):
You don't want the quarterback just to be back there
pitter patten and having all time to be able to
throw the ball, so being able to cause habit that
big sack towards the end of.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
The game that was big. Maybe they were thinking about
going forward because of the clock.
Speaker 8 (09:28):
But now they got pushed back, you know, and they
had to punt the ball.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
So those things will come up in a game.
Speaker 8 (09:33):
You don't necessarily see it in the flow of the spreadsheet,
but as you're watching that game, you know that was
a big play.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
Yeah, Like obviously with that defensive line player, there's a
physicality that you have to have, But how much of
it is also this team did show a little bit
of an aggressiveness. How much does that have to play
and do it as well?
Speaker 8 (09:48):
I think you know, the coaching staff can put you
in an aggressive situation, right, so you know it's it's
a game where we're using violence, we're using our hands,
But the coaches can amplify that by putting calling in
a putting you in a position where you could get
after and be physical.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
You know, when you look at obviously.
Speaker 8 (10:05):
In the offensive line, defensive line, the run game, right,
I think that's where to me, the stat of you know,
the physicality of this game is really showing up of
of what offensive line did and what their defensive line
didn't do, right and so, and I think that shows
up in a close game that you find a way.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
To win and to hold a team of nineteen yards rushing,
that's that's amazing.
Speaker 8 (10:26):
Like that, that's that's unheard of, right, Like that might
be like one drive, right, not a whole game, right.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
And on the on the flip side, you know.
Speaker 8 (10:33):
We're rushing for over two hundred and something something yards
like that's that's a big hat. Like that's when everybody's
looking at the offensive line and you're tipping your hat
off them because that's starting up front with the big guys.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Nineteen. Yeah, nineteen, that's that's John Fox football. That's that's
tough defense, stopped to run and so forth.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Back to your you're getting together for Legends weekend, about
how many guys were there looking obviously Melanie Mills was
down there doing the pregame, yes town, about how many
guys roughly and what was the weekend?
Speaker 8 (11:05):
Like, you know, it was just hard to put a
number on it, but I know that there was a
lot of guys. You know from the past past years.
We've seen some guys that haven't been back since two thousand,
like Chris Heatherton, right full back that you know you
haven't seen he's you know, just talking to him coming
back in the stadium. Him seeing the city of Charlotte,
He's like, this is totally different. I don't recognize this town.
(11:25):
And so it was really good to have conversations with
these guys. Guys are doing well, meeting them where they're at,
and it was just really good to you know, got
to see Pap and Jake and Luke. We're at a
point in time in our history where you've got guys
from ninety five and you've got guys that have just
been out a handful of years, and you could feel
like the family atmosphere starting to jail guys from twenty
(11:49):
fifteen yelling with the guys from two thousand and five.
Where before it was kind of like, oh, these are
the old the hold heads, and here are the young guys.
Now you're just starting to see one big family come together.
And I think this was probably one of our biggest
ledge this weekend.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
So it's like you got your brothers and then now
you got your extended cousins, got some young cousins.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
You know, I got a young cousin right here to
my left, you know.
Speaker 5 (12:09):
Yeah, because it can be awkward sometimes when you meet
you know, the old vet, you know, for the first time,
and you've never met him, right, and you have these
moments where you have you know, Blasher was like one
of the bigger ones, and then there was something that
happened throughout the off season, and then you have different meetups,
more opportunities to get to know a guy.
Speaker 6 (12:26):
That's where you start to.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
Get that family atmosphere and you're not just you know,
showing up and saying, Okay, I guess we're here for
the first time. And it's almost kind of like sizing
guys up, right, like, I guess you were the legend.
Speaker 8 (12:38):
Well, well, you know the funny, I met one of
the legends that I spoke to when he was in
high school.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
That makes me a little bit old right there, old here.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
But I think it's important to have that relationship that
you guys have, but also the relationship that you have
with the fans, and now that as we try to
move forward, now there is kind of a legacy here
in a history here. So then when the team does
do well, good things happen both for the fans but
also for the players.
Speaker 8 (13:10):
Absolutely, and we're starting to get some of those different
fan base I met. I met a young, young family
where the dad kind of grew up during our era,
but you know his kids, and so hearing him talk
about us to his kid, right, But you know his
favorite team was maybe the twenty fifteen team. So you're
starting to get that lineage. We're starting to we're not
just a young little team anymore. Like you're starting to
get guys that recognize names, and you're starting to.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
Get grandpa son grandson, and that's pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
But it's also the tie in to keep Pounding too, Yes,
in the Sam Mills story, and what keep pounding means
not just to your team, but to your team and
really for what Panthers moving forward.
Speaker 8 (13:45):
And I think that's up to us as Legends to
be able to keep that story so that they understand
in this building as a fan base when you come
into the city, what keep Pounding means. It's just not
a slogan, there's a meaning behind it. And to have
the Mills family there to help tonight.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
That was awesome, all right, Mike Rucker joining us. Mike
has been a big day. It was a fun day
with the victory today. Glad you got to be part
of the Legend's weekend and most importantly for right now,
a victory for the Pathers.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Always show good, always good. Thanks, It's always good to win.
Thank you, ro Thank you buddy, Mike Rucker.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
There Panthers win at twenty seven to twenty four. More
coming up on the fifth quarter postgame show after this.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
This is the Panthers postgame Show live from Bank of
America Citio.
Speaker 7 (14:26):
So to read, give straight up the Middle, touchdown, touchdown, Carolina.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
Reaction and analysis to today's game with special guests, highlights
and updates from around the league.
Speaker 7 (14:38):
Complete touchdown, right side makes the catch, touchdown Father.
Speaker 1 (14:43):
Now to Jim Zoki with the Panthers postgame Show exclusively
on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network, and.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
We are live from the fifth quarter Mike Pachico, but
John the Stuart, Jim Zochi getting ready here for the
Honda scoreboard after the if there's winning twenty seven twenty
four comeback win for the Carolina Panthers, and on the
hanessc gooborro Let's take a look at action elsewhere in London.
Earlier today, Minnesota hangs On beats Cleveland twenty one to seventeen.
Carson wentz through for two hundred and thirty six yards
(15:15):
with a touchdown in that game, Houston sends Baltimore to
a one in four record with a forty four to
ten win.
Speaker 6 (15:23):
C J.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
Stroud was twenty three of twenty seven two hundred and
forty four yards, four touchdowns thrown in that game from
Cooper Rush had three interceptions. Indianapolis goes to four and
one with a forty to six win over Las Vegas.
Daniel Jones twenty of twenty nine, two out of twelve yards,
two touchdowns. New Orleans gets off the schneid being one
of your form teams. Chase to the New York Giants
(15:46):
now one and four twenty I don't remember.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
We don't talk about that.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Well, I mean it is.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
It's I don't know you're talking about it. We don't
like to anowledge it, but it's a historical fact. But
New Orleans wins twenty six to fourteen. Jackson Dark through
two picks in that game, coming back the Earth maybe
a little bit still threw for two hundred two yards
two touchdowns. Spencer Ratler getting his first win of the year,
twenty of thirty two hundred and twenty five yards, touchdown
and an interception. Dallas fresh off that tie thirty seven
(16:13):
to twenty two win over the Jets. So now New
York Jets zero to five with the loss to Dallas
and Denver Hans Philadelphia their first loss twenty one to seventeen.
Arizona has a thirteen three lead over Tennessee. Right now,
that's late in the first quarter. Into the second quarter,
Tampa Bay six nothing over Seattle, and then midway through
(16:34):
the first quarter Detroit seven nothing over Cincinnati, and still
in the first the Chargers with a seven nothing lead
over the Commanders. Tonight, it's New England at Buffalo, so
big AFC East showdown tonight and then Monday night Kansas
City at Jacksonville. And there's your Honda scoreboard.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Very good hond To scoreboard. Good job, very well done.
Fun visiting with Rock about that. He's great. We get
to talk with you. I know your pregame up in
the booth with.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
Us, but what was your participation with the Legends weekend
and everything was going on, you know it was It's.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
Always a good time to be around the guys, seeing
guys that I haven't seen and probably I mean eight
years some of them. Yeah, you know, I got to
see Ted getting today.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (17:15):
And I actually talked about I talked to him.
Speaker 5 (17:18):
About Jimmy Horn a little bit because Jimmy Horn obviously
his first start start today. And you know what Teddy
meant to this this organization as far as what we
were able to do offensively and special teams. You know,
having a guy with speed, it just it's something that
is not utilized enough, especially when you don't have it,
(17:39):
and we have it. So now we seeing this the
end of the end of the game and the stretch
where we were able to depend on our let me
move over here, there we go when.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
We're depending Stewart engineer fixed it.
Speaker 5 (17:53):
Yeah, engineer guy, but being a musical background, but being
able to depend on and.
Speaker 6 (18:00):
Call on our rookies.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Yeah, you know, the end of the game there with
Jimmy Horn Junior being able to advance himself up and
have that hand placement ready and to know that, hey,
I got to go up there and secure the catch.
A lot of guys go up there, catch the ball,
get their head, get their eyes moving, and they drop that.
But that was a veteran you know, opportunity for him.
(18:25):
And then Trevor etn you have Rico Daddle go down
with a cramp and he comes in there and spells
him to close out the game.
Speaker 6 (18:33):
Basically, you know, we.
Speaker 5 (18:35):
Were running the ball very wise and very efficient throughout
the course of the game. And to be able to
have a guy that you can depend on to where
you don't have to let up at the course of
the game where it's needed the most, I think that's crucial.
So again shout out to Dan Morgan and company forgetting
the right guys in the building.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
No doubt, and good to see exaber Le get back
out there. Only three targets, two catches, but that was
a difficult seven yard touchdown catch. He made it a
tight window and then he had the other bigger catch
that was twenty four yards, so two catches for thirty
one yards on that out route and so it was
good to see him smiling jumping around.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
After that touchdown.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
And it's what they kind of wanted to get him back,
get some juices going in his offense were maybe a
week away from Jayleen Cocher, at least on the practice field.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
Anyways, Yeah, we.
Speaker 5 (19:19):
Had a room full of guys out of talents that
you know. I talked to Xavier and look at before
the game and just gave him a little bit of
encouragement and just basically let him know what he already knows,
which is he is a freak athlete.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
He is big.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
He can't not be tackled if he doesn't allow people
to want to take you know what I'm saying. He
has to have that mentality and he had that today
going out there executing, finding the ball, securing the catch.
Speaker 6 (19:44):
That was a hands.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
Catch football touchdown that he had. Okay, that's something that, again,
it doesn't just happen naturally. You expect that out of
your your your star receivers. You expect that at the
pro level, and it's a hard thing to do. And
for him, I feel very happy about where he's at,
and I'm super proud of him because there's a lot
of talk going on on the outside as far as
(20:08):
what he's going to be able to do and what
his exposure is to this team. And I think today
the naysayers have to at least sit on their hands
for a couple of days.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
I think one thing that's changed over the last fifteen
twenty years too, is the expectation levels. I know some
of this comes with the notoriety or the acclaim that
you get, but this is only.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
His second year as a pro.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
I mean it's not you know, in the past, you
might have a year or two to kind of get
your feet wet. Now guys are coming in his first
round picks and expected to have the start that like
t mec is having, And so I think expectations are
a little bit different. And how important was it maybe
to have that kind of a little bit of paused
while he was injured, just kind of kind of recollect
himself and kind of, you know, recharge that confidence.
Speaker 5 (20:48):
Yeah, it's always good to you know, have a recharge opportunity, right,
And that's physically, mentally answerunturally, and again, the expectations from
the fans is to win football games. The fans have
been fans for the last eight years of not seeing
their team be successful on the football field. And yeah,
you know, you have Xavier Luguett being a second year player. Uh,
(21:10):
he adopted the struggling organization. And although you want the
microwave version of success for a player, it does take time,
especially with younger guys. And you know, you have social
media these days, it's hard to avoid it. It's hard
to avoid the noise and the chatter of expectations. So
you know, it's hard to. It's it's easy to, you know,
(21:31):
sit back and have these expectations wanting to be wanting
them to be met and wanting them to be met now.
Speaker 6 (21:37):
But I think in the end people would.
Speaker 5 (21:40):
Be very satisfied with what the Carolina Panthers are really
building here. And I think today you were able to
see exactly what that is. The Miami Dolphins run game,
run run stop or run defense is terrible. Uh, and
we exploited that. We did what we were supposed to
do today. They were at they let up six hundred
and thirty yards or something like that throughout the year
(22:01):
coming into this game, and we just basically tagged down
on a tour in thirty nine yards rushing because that
was our game plan. Find the weaknesses of the opponent
and attack it and not just attack it, step on
their throat.
Speaker 6 (22:12):
And that's what we did today.
Speaker 4 (22:13):
And I think it's important also to go back to
the legends stuff today because that's what the Panthers are
trying to do. But when we have seen success here,
the blueprint has been pretty much identical. And with so
many former Panthers that you know, keep the Carolinas as
the home, it's great for you guys to be able to,
you know, put your armor on a younger player and
be like, hey, you're doing fine. Think about this, think
(22:34):
about that, listen to your coaches, and you know, everything
kind of comes together.
Speaker 6 (22:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (22:38):
You know, Zaberg grew up right down the street. You
know there's in South Carolina. He watched the Carolina Panthers
growing up. Yeah, and he knows what the identity, he
knows what the expectation is as far as what you know,
success looks like in the Carolinas, the Carolina football way, right,
and seeing guys like Stephen Davis today, right, you know,
whenever I see him, I just light up because he
(22:59):
was a guy that was on the sideline when I
was a rookie. He was on the sideline with Coach Skipp,
me DiAngelo, Nick Goings, Brad Hoover, And that was a
guy that I was looking at as like, oh, I
want to be like him, right, I gotta I gotta
make sure I passed this towards John the way he
was able to do it. And so seeing guys around,
(23:20):
I think it's going to be a huge attribute as
the Canland of Panthers, bringing the legends in on the
success and the failures of what's going what's going on?
Speaker 3 (23:31):
And Riley Field says about a hundred legends, by the way,
texted me while we were talking that conversation with Mike Rutgers,
So one hundred for more players, wow, part of the
Legends weekend.
Speaker 2 (23:38):
Here, So they'll get statues or just Riley.
Speaker 1 (23:41):
No.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
I singled out Riley for a statue pregame because he
had to miss the pregame show today for the first time,
I think ever.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
That might be his first.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
We said a statue for Riley, and that way we
would also have a Riley when.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
He's not in case he's not there right now, we
didn't have a blue jacket on.
Speaker 1 (23:56):
It would have a blue jacket on.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
When we come back, we'll listen back to some of
the highlights we'll here from coach Dave Canalis.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
We're here from the guys in the booth and a
lot more.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
Belfon is a proud partner of the Carolina Panthers, your
hometown favored in the fashion game since eighteen eighty eight.
At BELK, you could score a game day gear from
over one hundred team shot brands like Adidas, Nike under
Armor and bring home the win with big.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
Deals at exclusive coupons Belk in the game since eighteen
eighty eight.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
Panthers a winner today improved the record to two and
three by beating the Miami Dolphins twenty seven to twenty four.
This is the Carolina Panthers Radio Network back after a
win twenty seven to twenty four Panthers beat the Miami Dolphins.
Welcome back along with Mike Pachico, Jonathan Stewart, Jim Zoki
with you here. We're gonna listen back to some of
(24:39):
the highlights from the game. We're gonna skip ahead to
the end because that's where all the good stuff was.
To the fourth quarter, don't you think so? I agree,
because we're losing going into the fourth quarter. And then
Rico Dawdle gives the Panthers the lead twenty to seventeen,
counting the extra point on this one yard touchdown run
that was reviewed but found to be a touchdown.
Speaker 7 (24:58):
Full line formation, Young under center, down on the running back.
Here's the snap, the gift to Dowdell up the gun.
Does he get there? Touchdown? Rico Dowdo punctuates the.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
Drive with a one.
Speaker 7 (25:14):
Yard touchdown and the Panthers down seventeen to nothing at
one point, take a nineteen to seventeen lead.
Speaker 3 (25:23):
And that was with just over six minutes to go
in the game, but it wouldn't hold up. Good kick
return from Miami sets up a short field and then
Tua Tongue of Vailoa connects with Jalen Waddle a forty
seven yard touchdown in Miami retakes the lead.
Speaker 7 (25:36):
Here under center snap play action to takes a shot
deep downfield, Waddle behind the defense makes the catch, ten
to five touchdown Miami. They go back on top. It's
twenty three to twenty with four forty two to go.
Tongue Biloa to Waddle forty seven yards for the.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
Score and with the extra point they would make it
a four point lead. Meeting the Panthers. Wod have to
score a touchdown. Panthers get the ball back, have to
convert on a fourth down. During the course of that drive.
Jimmy Horn with the catch that jeffit Stewart was talking
about couple of minutes ago, sets up Mitchell Evans, who
only scores late game fourth quarter touchdowns. He did it
last week, does it again here. This is a very
(26:17):
important one on like last week though, four yard touchdown
to give the Panthers a lead in the final minute.
Speaker 7 (26:23):
Young under center trouble the fullback in the offset high.
Here's the snap fake to Etn Bryce throws cut by Evans,
Dona puts into the m zone for a.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Touchdown and that was the final Panthers win at twenty
seven to twenty four. And Stu we talked about the
fact that Jimmy Horn had that catch and Mitchell Evans
was not a difficult catch, but it's an important time
in the game.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
The confidence to have in some of this rookie class.
Speaker 3 (26:50):
Out there, Trevor atnd getting some good reps aid running
back and line. We already talked about Nick s Gorton, Princey, Moniellen,
the rookie class contribute being right away because we know
Tederal McMillan once again leading receiver for the Carolina Panthers today.
This draft class has contributed in a lot of ways
already through five games of the season.
Speaker 6 (27:09):
Yeah, and that's what you want. There's no such thing
as a rookie.
Speaker 5 (27:13):
Right when you get drafted and you have the first year,
the expectation is for you to play and to play
at an elite level because you are amongst the elite.
Speaker 6 (27:21):
And so what we saw today is guys grow up.
Speaker 5 (27:25):
We guys saw We saw guys grow up in confidence
through the coaching staff to call a number in the
and when the game matters the most, and the numbers
are rookie numbers.
Speaker 4 (27:36):
Yeah, kudos to the coach.
Speaker 5 (27:39):
Okay, again, this is a thing that they're building. If
you if you talk about the players that made an
impact today, those players were not on the team last year.
You talk about the players that made an impact later
in this game today, those players weren't called on weeks prior.
So as they're figuring things out on the whim, because
(28:01):
again this is the year two, year two for this, this.
Speaker 6 (28:05):
This combination up upstairs.
Speaker 5 (28:08):
And yeah, we as a as a fan base, we
are experiencing this as like you know, hey, look this
is going on year nine, eight or whatever. We're ready
for wins. The expectation should be growth because today was
a growth game. Today was a confidence game. And in
the NFL, that's gold that's gold Man. Today we were
able to grow in the category of what is our identity?
(28:30):
Oh it's run the ball? Oh what is our what's
our backbone, Oh, our backbone is linebackers, play downhill, fit
your gaps, defensive ends, set the edge. We did a
great job of setting the edge, whether it was a
defensive end or if it was the scheme to get
the safety down. And again moregg three tackles for losses.
That doesn't happen in the National Football League. You have
(28:53):
a physical guy that is supposed to make play coverage
and be you know, a guy that is finesse in
a certain aspects of the game.
Speaker 6 (29:01):
But this is a guy that's playing like a linebacker. Okay.
Speaker 5 (29:04):
So that's what we have in this in this Panther
football team this year, and we're seeing them developed, we're
seeing them gain confidence, and we're seeing the coaching staff
starting to understand how to utilize their players.
Speaker 4 (29:18):
And you have to have tone setters, right, I mean,
you know guys like Morrig today and obviously Wego'donnell, but
you know, back in your day, it was Trey Boston,
it was d Angel. You know, guys that are and
Cam Newton like, guys that are making plays and then
people your teammates feed off of that.
Speaker 6 (29:31):
You can rally behind that.
Speaker 5 (29:33):
Absolutely, you need somebody that's willing to go out there
and and obviously do what's asked if you do play
football and have football knowledge, but then have the heart
and the desire to continue to turn your legs if
you're a running back, have the heart and desire to
extinguer if you're a pass blocker. There was actually there's
(29:53):
that that long throw to team mac Icky on the
left side left tackle. There is a great pass block
set where he sat back and he trusted his set
and he extended his arms and if you go back
and watch that play, you'll see how strong Ikey is
because there's no way of a human being is supposed
(30:13):
to be a brick wall to another human being like that.
I mean, it was incredible that we saw flashes across
the whole entire board of why this Carolina Panthers football
team is going to be successful.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
And they talked about doing this kind of reset this
week and doing some self scouting, about taking every rep
as an individual event and you know, making a play,
moving on to the next play. And that's a great
example of everybody kind of doing their job that maybe
went unseen by ninety nine percent of the population, but
you saw it. Coaching staff and his teammates saw that,
and that play doesn't happen without that moment.
Speaker 6 (30:44):
Oh absolutely not.
Speaker 5 (30:45):
And then you even see Rico Dwo stepping up there
on the missed opportunity to t Mac later there in
the third quarter where he steps up and he shocks
the linebacker on a past pickup. And that's something that
you're asked to do as a running back, is to
be physical in the pass game in ways that are selfless, right,
(31:08):
And you see that across the board. You see Xavier
la Get on the wide receiver jet sweep to Jimmy
Horn Junior seventeams down there, driving driving people out of
the club. And that's not necessarily something that you would
think is you know, the flashy good spots of what
you see in the player. But that's what championship teams do.
(31:31):
Their players go in with a shovel and they do
the dirty work, good stuff.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
All right.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
That touchdown by Mitchell Levan's battered. It was the one
that put it over the top. It's the Whataburger, What
a moment of the game, grilling delicious food for seventy
five years.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
What Aburger, just like you like it. When we come back,
let's hear.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
From Rico Donell, the Panthers running back who went for
two hundred and six yards. We'll get his interview coming
up next as we continue in the aftermath of the
Panthers victory twenty seven twenty four winners over Miami.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
More coming up next on the.
Speaker 1 (32:00):
Fifth quarter show Back to the Panthers postgame show line
from Bank of America Citium, exclusively on the Carolina Panthers
Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
During the break, you can find something that Joff and
Stewart did during our last time out, which was a
shout out to Rico Daddell. Here from the fifth quarter
with the fans in the background, everybody excited about the
fact that, out of all the things we could say
about it, he ties Joan Stewart for the second most
rushing yards in a Panthers single game, two hundred and
six yards to ten the all time record by D'Angelo Williams.
(32:35):
But we witnessed slice of Panthers history here on Legends
Day today.
Speaker 2 (32:39):
We'll talk more about that in just a moment.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Let's go back to the booth down the guys and
their conversation with Rico o'dowdell.
Speaker 7 (32:45):
We are joined by the Star of the game. Panthers
running back Rico Dowdell twenty three for two to six,
including a big touchdown as well average nine yards per
carry and a shrop. Jake Aloon, Luke Keigley, Rico, what
went right for the Russian game and you, particularly today.
Speaker 9 (33:03):
Those guys up front just giving me space or to
get to that second level. And that's what it's been about,
just get to execution. These first couple games we weren't
able to execute right, but we knew coming into this
week that we would be able to run the ball
on them, and that's one of the things we harped on,
fixing the run game and balancing the game out and
it came to fruition today and we was able to get.
Speaker 7 (33:22):
The job with Tuba out. What changed for you leading
up to.
Speaker 9 (33:25):
Today obviously a lot just stepping up into that role
of having to carry the load. Like I said, I
was definitely looking forward forward to it throughout the week.
I've been able to do it before. It's just all
about opportunity. So just another opportunity to go out there
on showcase what I could do when giving the chance
to do it, Yeah.
Speaker 10 (33:42):
Rico, Jake delom Here how many family members do we
have in the stands today?
Speaker 9 (33:46):
I probably had like fifteen to sixteen, not too many.
Speaker 10 (33:49):
Okay, yeah, just make hopefully somebody will bring you food
tonight and water and drink because I watched you gramp
up tonight, so I would think the family should take
care of you. But listen, one thing I want to
talk about Brady Christensen getting put in that right guard today,
and it seemed like we never called his name, and
that's usually a great thing for an offensive lineman. But
just some of the holes you had today, the success
(34:09):
that you had running the football on the right side
of your offensive line.
Speaker 9 (34:13):
Yeah, like I said, it's been it was man down,
man up mentality. Rob went out a couple of weeks ago,
and a couple of guys rotated through there. But you know,
like I said, man down, man up, Brady was able
to come out there and get the job done. Like
you said, the holes opened up on that right side
really all across, and like I said, that was one
of the things we've been harping on fixing is the
run game coming into this game, and we knew we'd
(34:34):
be able to run it. But those guys up front
did a great job all thanks to them. Man, it
wouldn't be it wouldn't be able to be done without them.
Speaker 11 (34:40):
Rico Luke here just kind of talk about you guys
bouncing back from those first two possessions. Obviously you're driving
down the field first possession fumbling the second possession is
it pick and your guys' ability to just stay stay focused,
stay inside the game plan and keep running that football.
Speaker 9 (34:56):
Yeah, exactly like you said, off to a slow start,
but thanks to everybody out there, Like you said, we
stayed locked in and we're able to get a touchdown
and then get another little score. And we knew we
was getting the ball coming out of halftime, just had
to add our way back into it and we was
able to do that. But that's that was a team
effort all around, offense, defense, special teams and just staying
in the game and knowing we still had the opportunity
to win as long as we would get some points
(35:17):
on the board. And that's what we kept saying on
the sidline. We just got a score.
Speaker 7 (35:20):
Rico assessed the performance of the rookie class today.
Speaker 9 (35:25):
Those guys are did great. You know, you had t
Mac Jimmy was able to get his first go around
today and Trevor came in like you said when I
was camping, and finished the drive out and had him
a couple of yards think he had Coach just said
four for twenty something, so over five of carry and uh,
who else is out there?
Speaker 7 (35:40):
Yeah, t Mac, Jimmy, Mitchell Evans.
Speaker 9 (35:43):
Mitchell Evans got this. Got a touchdown today, yep. A
matter of fact, the game winning touchdown. So yeah, those guys,
like you said, we're gonna need everybody to win. And
like I said, it was a great job from the
rookie class and the team as well out there to
get to win.
Speaker 7 (35:55):
Had a great performance by U. Rico. Congratulations and thank you.
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
Rico Dowdell two hundred and six yards and a touchdown
in this game and twenty three rushing taps nine yards
per carry. Also caught three passes for twenty eight yards. Guys,
we normally do this towards the end, but can we
just all agree the hardest working player of the game,
brought you by Sun Belt Reynolds, the official rental equipment
partner of the Panthers, is, in fact, ric o'dowdell.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
Is that fair to say?
Speaker 4 (36:22):
Okur, I think the only the only exception would be
the REFEREEZI through seventeen, but other than that, I.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Think most are on the Dolphins secondary. So those were
very helpful in agreement. Yeap love that.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
Hey, we'll talk a little bit more before we get
back to the conversation. Let's got it pause ten seconds
for a station identification here on the Carolina Panthers radio network.
That feels like ten seconds, and so we are back
and along with Stu and Mike Jim Zoki with you here.
But Stu, as you talked about, alluded to it earlier
with the rock up here, that the yards doesn't happen
(36:57):
without the offensive line, which you've got a number of
guys that are down obviously some possibly for the season
as it would turn out, and you got good old
Brady Christensen and they're plugging it at right guard always
does a great job.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
But those guys held up throughout the entire game today.
Speaker 5 (37:11):
Yeah, that's what we hope for because Brady Christiansen is
also our backup center and depth is always an issue
for teams. You know, you have high expectations before the
season starts, and then you have injuries that are the
nature of the game. And you just basically, you know,
hope that the process throughout the week of preparation is
you know, giving these guys enough juice to go into
a game to where they're playing fast, they're playing strong,
(37:34):
and because a lot of times when you do have
a unit, like the offensive line, where certain guys are
banged up, one guy's playing harder than the other, you
do have a lot of those those injury bug situations.
So Brady Christiansen being a guy that is super dependable
obviously because he can play both guard and center, shoot,
you can probably play right tackle. So having a group
(37:59):
like that, as you know, versa is huge.
Speaker 4 (38:01):
And I think when you look at things, I mean,
defense kind of to me tends to be a little
bit like hard rock, right, I mean, it's it's about
loudness and power. But you know, offense is kind of
more like an orchestra. But if someone in the orchestra
hits the wrong note, you know it. Yeah, But so
you still have to do your individual job as a
musician to make the whole team, to make the whole
(38:22):
orchestra sound good, and the same thing with the offense.
Everybody has to contribute and win their one on one
battle to make everything kind of be harmonious.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
Oh yeah, it's all about harmony. And especially for the
running game, for a running back, it is like it's
it's poetry. Yes, it's it is about rhythm. Give me
the give me the ball more. And I can actually
feel the beat, right, give me the ball more in
certain situations, and I can definitely for the beat, especially
(38:49):
if it's my type of music. And what I saw today,
we got going. We've got jump started there on that
touchdown drive with a gap scheme run where you basically
have the left are pulling and just making a wham
block right, just crashing and and and and kicking a
kickout block.
Speaker 6 (39:09):
So you have Damian Lewis who is bigger than.
Speaker 5 (39:12):
Life and his job is to basically crash and kick
out the first guy he sees, and the running back
is just gonna hit right behind where that is. It's
a quick hitting plays. It's this the exact type of
play that Rico Dado thrives in, which is I'm not
here to dance, I'm here to hit the hole. Get
to the second level, like he was just saying, and
(39:35):
get me to the safeties. Give me to the safeties.
And I promise you I'll make them play.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
He was breaking tackles all three levels. Yea.
Speaker 5 (39:42):
You want to know what's actually interesting, There was that
one touchdown where he broke two tackles where the safety
in a corner were basically there to make a stop
and they couldn't and he just broke through there. It
reminded me of D'angela Williams. I mean, especially with the
hair kind of dangling in the back like it looked
exactly like D'Angelo. How he would basically his hips would
(40:04):
not stop. And when you see that in a runner,
you better pray that you don't get they they don't
run the ball. And for whatever reason, we've been in
certain situations the last several weeks where we haven't been
dialing up the run. We get down early and we
just kind of freak out and go going on about
going on about our business. But having Cuba and and
(40:28):
Trevor etn I think that's the recipe.
Speaker 3 (40:31):
Nice and three quality running backs you get count on
for the course of the season.
Speaker 2 (40:36):
When one of them is out like Cuba.
Speaker 3 (40:37):
Great to see a near record performance, say by Rico
Daldo two hundred and six yards. We'll hear from the
coach Dave Canalis. Will we come back next? Continuing on
our post game show? Twenty seven twenty four Panthers win
over Miami on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network twenty seven,
twenty four Panthers with a victory today to move to
two and three on the season. Right back here next
(40:58):
Sunday to host the Dallas Cowboys. Before we talk about
next week, let's keep talking about this week and what
happened just in the past couple hours with the Panthers
victory as coach Dave Canalis joins the Guys.
Speaker 7 (41:08):
An A Shwrop, Jake Delo and Luke Keickley joined by
Panthers head coach Dave Canalis. Dave down seventeen to nothing.
Things seemed to be going sideways. What changed? What got
this team right?
Speaker 12 (41:21):
Just doing right, just executing, taking care of the ball
and communicating with each other. It was a full group effort.
It was you know, we knew they were gonna have
some wrinkles. This is an aggressive play caller. Got to
give the Dolphins credit for what they did early on
offensively and defensively, really just making it challenging on us,
and it was. It was the coaches talking together with
(41:41):
the players, coming up with a plan to kind of
offset some of the ways they were trying to attack
us from their defense attacking the offense. We made some
adjustments in our run game, made some adjustments in our protection,
settled in and started playing well. And then on the
flip side defensively, you know, just a great day against
the run. Really the first and second down normal runs,
our defense has played well. It's just the gadgety type
(42:02):
of stuff which we minimized, you know, and then and
then they made some plays in the past game, but
guys just settling in and executing and staying together.
Speaker 7 (42:09):
Describe Rico Daddles performance.
Speaker 12 (42:13):
It's one of the best rushing performances that I've been
around that I've seen, from an efforts standpoint, violence with
the ball, running through arm, tackles, the discipline of how
to hit the runs. You know, his whole attitude and
everything was there. He was there to win, and he
really just elevated the whole group when he was making
those plays. The sideline could feel that we all gained confidence,
(42:33):
we all gained toughness when we run the ball like that.
And so for Rico to come in there step in
here without Cuba being there, and to play the way
he did was unbelievable.
Speaker 11 (42:41):
Coach Luke here just wanted to kind of talk a
little bit about Darren Waller. In the first half. It
was was playing really good football and just the adjustments
that we were able to make on the defensive side
of the ball to shut him down there in the
second half.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 12 (42:53):
It was a group coming together to like identify where
he was at in the formation. This is a great
player and you know, he was able to take advantage
of some miscues, you know, on the back half. But
once we settled in and played our leverage, the ball
had to go other places and they checked it down.
We rallied up and minimized some of those explosives later on.
But what a great player. And I thought, just again
with the coaching staff and the players on the defensive
(43:14):
side working together, troubleshooting issues and then finding a way
to execute down the stretch.
Speaker 10 (43:19):
Yeah, coach is Jake, I think one of the things
that kind of jumped out, I know in the booth,
does today our linebackers we felt them today and I'm
not so sure we really felt them much. In a
couple of games earlier. But you felt Rose Boom, you
felt Trevin Wallace today. Was that the same feeling you
got from the sideline? Absolutely, Jake.
Speaker 12 (43:37):
I thought this was a group that's been growing weekly together, communicating,
identifying things, anticipating what type of plays may happen. And
I just see this group continuing to take strides, take
steps in terms of their communication. And once you understand
where you're at and you can execute the first part
of your play, then it allows you to play fast,
you know. And that's a tribute and the credit for
(43:58):
the way that the guys been working through and troubleshooting
issues and finding solutions.
Speaker 10 (44:02):
Yeah, and last one for me, And I know, I
always love offensive side of the football. I love what
the rookies have done today. But man, Brady Christiansen, I
just don't think he gets enough credit. Sometimes he plays
from left tackle to right tackle to center to guard.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
But you didn't hear about him today.
Speaker 10 (44:18):
But we had so much success running behind on the
right side, and we were clean up front today.
Speaker 12 (44:23):
Absolutely, I can't say enough good things about Brady Christiansen.
He's a guy that I trust, He's he's just a
tough guy. He wants to help the team in any
way possible. He's got no ego, He's humble, and he
goes out there and he just gets the job done.
And I can't tell you how important it is that
we've had Brady here for the last two years.
Speaker 7 (44:41):
Dave, before we let you go, this rookie class, how
would you describe from your vantage point how they were
able to impact the game today?
Speaker 12 (44:50):
They're growing up right before our eyes. You know, you
got Corey Thornton stepping in playing a role. You had
Laythan Ransom being able to play safety back there. You know,
his game wasn't perfect, but he did his job, you know.
And then of course on the offensive side team, Matt
continuing to produce, Trevor Etn making plays, Jimmy with the
clutch play in the fourth quarter there to make that one.
Mitchell I've been scoring on the touchdown there at the end.
(45:12):
These are guys that are just growing up one week
at a time. They understand what our expectation of them is.
Just take the next step. We can't go all the
way into the future of where who these guys are
and what they can be, but can you continue to
get better every day? That's all We're asking them.
Speaker 7 (45:26):
To do great win. Dave Canallis, Panthers head coach, Thanks Dave.
Speaker 3 (45:29):
All Right, thanks guys, coach Dave Canalis with the guys upstairs,
and a great rushing day by Rico Dward couldn't have
happened without Brady Christensen and that offensive line and guys.
That's something that could and should travel. We'll see Chuba
Hubbard's kind of week to week. We know Trevor Eten
could be a factor in the running game as well.
Now we know Ricodoubele is capable of and it certainly
(45:51):
gives teams a lot to have to game plan for.
Kid you think about the Panthers last couple years, like
who scares.
Speaker 2 (45:55):
You to go?
Speaker 3 (45:56):
You know, Derek Brown's good or right down tedor Roy
McMillan is a guy who to keep an eye on here.
But when you have a collective group, because it's not
just Rico doable.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
We've seen how good Chewba Hubbard can be.
Speaker 3 (46:06):
When you go that team runs the ball, well, that's
a lot. That's a big ask of an opponent. Steve
has to try to put a stop to that.
Speaker 5 (46:11):
Yeah, and especially when you know that there's multiple guys
so if one guy's go one guy goes down or
goes out of the game for a breather, you still
have to deal with another one.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
The next one comes in.
Speaker 5 (46:22):
And so, and you know that the offensive coordinator is
going to still be aggressive with the play calling. That
definitely makes when you when you see the schedule and
you see the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 6 (46:36):
The Panthers want.
Speaker 5 (46:37):
That to put You want to put fear into your opponent,
meaning fear the logo. Right, That's one of the things
that UH Dan Morgan talked about in as first press
conference as the GM. You know, we want to make
sure that we get our opponents to fear the logo.
Speaker 6 (46:55):
Whenever you see.
Speaker 5 (46:56):
It, your heart starts to pump, and meaning your defense
doesn't want to have to doesn't want to come in
here to tackle, means that you if if you're on offense,
you're you're fearful for your life as far as if
you're in a passing situation because you know you can't
run the ball. What we saw today was the Carolina
(47:18):
Panthers doing what they do best, which is run the ball,
because it opens up everything. It opens up the quick pass,
it opens up the uh the play action, and it
also keeps your defense fresh on the sideline.
Speaker 4 (47:29):
And you also want to kind of put a little
bit of that thought in the back of the minds
of the opposing team that when they play the Panthers,
it's like, oh man, it's gonna be a tough day. Yeah,
I don't want I don't want to I don't really
want to do this, like I don't want to deal
with this today, right and then and then when they
often when you when you put up two hundred yards
on you know what two thirty nine today, that wears
a defense down at the end of the game that
you know that those defensive players are you know, sucking
(47:51):
win pretty good.
Speaker 3 (47:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (47:52):
What it does is like for the next opponent, whoever
we play next, who are we playing.
Speaker 4 (47:56):
Net Dallas, Dallas, yep, which defense.
Speaker 6 (47:59):
You're doing a good defense at all?
Speaker 5 (48:00):
And so now you're actually setting the expectations for the
next opponent basically saying you're not gonna have You're not
gonna be able to play cover two, cover four, You're
not gonna be able to sit back there in zone.
You're gonna have to bring somebody in the box, which
we saw them do today. And it still didn't work, okay,
so put things on film. Opponents have to respect it
(48:21):
in their preparation.
Speaker 2 (48:22):
There ain't gonna be no rematch.
Speaker 3 (48:24):
But in this case, they will not be a rematch.
We don't play Miami again this year. And when you've
had a big day of running to the football, nothing hits
the spot like zippy ice. This Panthers season, Stay ice
Cold was zippy ice based right here and shot out
to the ice provider at Bank of America Stadium, keeping
your drinks and the Panthers cool all game long.
Speaker 2 (48:39):
Zippy ice, keeping.
Speaker 3 (48:39):
Carolina cool, one game at a time. Well here from
the guys in the booth, the Luke and Jake and
a niche that's coming up next. Panthers win twenty seven
to twenty four over Miami.
Speaker 1 (48:49):
Back to Chimzuki live from the Bank of America CITIU
with the Panthers postgame show exclusively on the Carolina Panthers
Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (49:02):
To the best of our knowledge, Panthers came through the
victory with not any big significant news as far as
Ali's injury.
Speaker 2 (49:09):
Updates are brought to you by HRIM Health.
Speaker 3 (49:11):
Doing more to keep you moving, achieving, striving at every
agent stage, so you can live fully, although the centerpiece
of the storyline is Rico Daddle playing because Chuba Hubbard
had a cap injury this week, and we did have
a number players who didn't participate today, and that's why
we talk about Brady Christiansen filling in at right guard
doing a great job and some of the other guys
who stepped up today. It was great to have Pat
Jones get that sacked towards the end he was back
(49:31):
Stu after not being out not playing for a while.
DJ Wanham and talking about setting the edge and getting
pressure on the quarterback. Those guys make a big difference
when they come in because that has such fresh legs
where you get you know, Nick Scort and Princely and
those guys on the field.
Speaker 5 (49:46):
Yeah, I mean if you named also names there that
we didn't have on the roster, or we have on
the roster but not on the depth, and they won't
play last week, right and one of our issues was
set in the edge, and we were able to do
all of that today. And the some the linebackers, Trevor
Wallace and Christian rose Boom, whatever got into them, I
(50:06):
don't know, it was like they like drink some kind
of like energy drinker or something, and and was just
all over the place. But it's it's awesome to see
when you're when your linebacker is the leading tackler as
far as you know, getting active and setting the tone
on defense. He's if he's the leading tackleer, that means
the defensive line is doing their job, and that means
(50:27):
he's fitting the gaps. And also I think you know,
the defensive coordinator, Eiro, he did a good job calling
calling this defense today. There was a moment where in
the second half is to start to start the second
half off, he dialed up a rush right there in
the you know, defensive rush right there in the B
and the B gap. A run stop right and you're
(50:50):
expecting a defense or offense to run the ball in
a certain you know formation, and given the formation, you
have certain checks on defense and you get to go
when you see a certain set and they executed and
Christian Roseboom met a chan right there in the backfield
without within like he had nowhere to go because Christian
(51:12):
was there.
Speaker 6 (51:13):
So to have that type.
Speaker 5 (51:14):
Of execution on defense, it's going to be a huge
confident Again we say confidence, but it's just going to
be a good boost for this weekend. In prepar for
this week in preparation for Dallas.
Speaker 4 (51:26):
In an offense, Jonathan mentioned it earlier. Balanced there were
sixty five offensive plays, thirty two rushes, thirty pass attempts.
Ten different players had at least one catch, So the
ball was moving on it was popping and putting pressure.
Speaker 2 (51:40):
On the on the Dolphins defense.
Speaker 5 (51:42):
Yeah, you talk about adjustments too during the half, you know,
coach mentioned it in his in his press there. You know,
they they made adjustments. You know, that's the last two
and a half quarters were completely different quarters. But when
they came out in the second half, they were like, Okay,
we're going to make sure we find Waller. Hey, defense,
we want you to stop the run, absolutely, to stop
(52:02):
the run, but we have to make sure we know
where Waller is too, because sometimes you know the game plan,
you can.
Speaker 6 (52:08):
Kind of get you know, laser line and.
Speaker 5 (52:10):
Laser focused on what the deep, what your coaches are
telling you to do, and that's good and all, but
we want you to not have to be a robot.
You know, have some little spatial awareness.
Speaker 7 (52:19):
You know j C.
Speaker 5 (52:20):
Horn was right there on the touchdown the Waller in
the back of the end zone. He's said, you know,
Waller found a nice little pocket there in zone and
j C was right there. It's just more so all right,
you found him, but find the ball too. And it's
just a little bit of things like that that I
think we're going to watch film and they're going to
say to themselves, Man, we could have beat these guys
(52:41):
by twenty.
Speaker 3 (52:42):
Yeah, take care of the football to do some things
like that. We're gonna save the final thoughts on the
booth for the last segment, which is coming up next.
We'll get to the guys when we come back next
to our final break here. As we continue to wrap
things up after the Panthers win twenty seven to twenty
four over Miami.
Speaker 1 (52:58):
The Panther's postgame show continues line from Bank of America Citio,
exclusively on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (53:08):
HI final segment along with Mike Pachico and jab Ben
Steard Jim Zoki here twenty seven to twenty four Panthers
win over Miami with a late touchdown in the final
two minutes. I said it back to the booth and
get the final thoughts.
Speaker 7 (53:19):
Well, that was fun. Panthers twenty seven Dolphins twenty four.
Carolina started down seventeen to nothing, turnovers on their first
two possessions. Miami fourteen points off those turnovers. Panthers didn't
even have the ball for most of the first quarter.
Dolphins had it for more than twelve minutes. A new
shrop Jake Delome, Louke Kickley, and then late in that
(53:43):
second quarter things started to turn. Xavierly get with a
big touchdown catch that seemed to galvanize the offense. They
get a field goal before halftime from Ryan Fitzgerald. Next
thing you know, it's twenty unanswered by Carolina take the lead.
Jalen Wattle comes back with a long touchdown catch, and
(54:03):
then the Panthers march down the field and respond Mitchell
Evans a four yard touchdown catch that ends up being
the game winning touchdown. Luke, I want to start with
you because before every game it's an old coaching cliche,
but it's so true. What are the keys to the game? Really?
You can always start with two things. Run the football
and stop the run. Boy, do the Panthers do that today?
(54:25):
Two hundred plus yards on the ground, almost two fifty
and then they held Miami below twenty yards rushing.
Speaker 11 (54:31):
I just think the physicality and that offensive line, and
you know, I'm I'm happy for guys like Brady Christiansen,
who's bounced around his whole career, is played tackle, center, guard.
Last week he was our emergency center, so we couldn't
play him at guard where we would have liked to.
He steps in the day along with Cad Mays making
a second start of the season and Taylor Mowton, and
that right side of the offensive line was so physical
(54:53):
we ran behind him all day. And then when we
needed a touchdown at the end of the game, iky Ikwan,
who just played so so physical, gave that whole right
side of the defensive line out of the way. And
then on the defensive side, our linebackers are somebody that
has kind of been questioned all year. Coach Canalis challenged
them this year during practice to play better and especially
(55:13):
with this offense, how much shifts and motions in wide zone.
Watching the game, you could see Trevin and rose bum
the whole time, signaling and communicating and playing downhill. Rose
Boom had nine tackles at a Merrigan. The run game
was super active and Trevin had a couple on the
edge the defensive line played great physical set. Edges re
established the line of scrimmage, and then our backers are
downhill playing super physical.
Speaker 7 (55:34):
It was great to see that and Jake Earlier this week,
the Panthers cut DJ Johnson, a former third round pick
from a few years ago, and it kind of opened
up Carolina from a lot of critics who were pointing
at some of the misses in their draft class. Well,
you know what, this draft class and even some of
the undrafted rookies from twenty twenty five, they were a
(55:54):
big reason the Panthers came back and won today. The
rookies showed up, and they showed up in big spots.
Speaker 2 (56:00):
They certainly did.
Speaker 10 (56:00):
And and here's the thing, Dan Morgan didn't didn't draft
those guys a couple of years ago. Dan Morgan has
two drafts to his name, right, and then there's Exavierly again.
Speaker 2 (56:10):
When is he gonna step up, when is he gonna
make a play? Well?
Speaker 10 (56:13):
Today he gets a touchdown pass in the first half,
and he gets a big corner out uh in the
second half.
Speaker 6 (56:18):
And he showed up in his blocking today.
Speaker 2 (56:20):
That's something that it's gonna be.
Speaker 10 (56:21):
It's gonna show up on film Rico Dano had two
hundred and six yards to Todd Jonathan Stewart for the
second most. Well, yeah, but watch the secondary blocks, the
blocks down the field, and he was big into that.
But yeah, I just we finally overcame. I think that's
the biggest thing anytime something bad. But if it wasn't
a perfect game, we couldn't overcome it. Well we did
(56:42):
it today. How good is Miami? I'm not quite sure.
Speaker 7 (56:45):
Does it matter?
Speaker 10 (56:45):
Doesn't it doesn't. That's exactly my point. It doesn't matter.
We're playing next week who the Dallas Cowboys. This is
an offensive juggernaut. I don't care who they have injured.
Dak Prescott is a good football player. They're gonna put
up points. They're struggling defensive. We have to answer the
bell our defense. I give our defense credit. They've shown
up many weeks. I think last week was the first
(57:07):
time that kind of got ugly. They showed up for.
Speaker 7 (57:09):
Us, even the Arizona game where the Panthers fell behind. Yeah, Luke,
you remember the defense was put in some really tough
spots early in that game due to some turnovers. And
today there was that stretch what was it five possessions
in a row where they got Miami to go under center.
We gave this offense a chance to work their way
back into the game.
Speaker 11 (57:27):
Absolutely held on too, And that's kind of what we
talked about. We need to play well on defense so
we don't have to abandon what we're really good at,
and that's the run game. And fortunately for us, coach
Canalis didn't give up on it. We went down and
able to score a touchdown and then get Like you said,
we got five stops in a row, and it just
gave us a chance to stay in in the game.
And it's something that Jake's talked about all year. We're
(57:47):
at our best and we can stay inside of our
game plan. I think Dave Canalis and Brad Didzig are
great play callers when they have the opportunity to call
the plays how they went to And kind of what
I mean by that is if we're down twenty to
zero twenty two, it's hard to stay inside that system
because we've got to score so many points. But I
give them a lot of credit credit today for staying
in that run game and us playing well on defense
(58:08):
and giving ourselves a chance to lean on that run
game and get Bryce back into it.
Speaker 7 (58:13):
A win next week against Dallas at home, Panthers are
back to five hundred, and then they go to New York,
New Jersey technically to take on a winless Jets team.
There's an opportunity here. I know, one game at a time,
but soak this one in. You kind of hope this
can be a turning point type of game because Jake,
(58:34):
it just feels we learned a lot about what this
team can be, and we said that two weeks ago
against Atlanta and then New England happened. If they can
follow this win up and string some strong performances back
to back to back to back, all of a sudden,
it changes the feeling around this team. This game certainly
changed the feeling around this team after last week.
Speaker 2 (58:55):
No, I think there's no doubt.
Speaker 10 (58:57):
I think it was such a disappointment to play at home,
your first home game, and to destroy Atlanta and then
to what we did last week. That was such a downer.
But I you know, listen, Dave. One thing about him,
you watch his press conferences. He is the same meticulous.
It's never too high and never too low. He screamed
(59:18):
at his press conference on Wednesday, the words that I heard.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
It's very simple. We need to play better and we're
gonna put different people in.
Speaker 10 (59:25):
And to me, he called out a couple of guys
by not calling them out, and I just think, like,
don't take his demeanor as being oh, he's just this that.
I'm not so sure. I think he's not afraid to
make a big call. Listen, he did it last year.
He Ben's Bryce after Week two last year. He's not afraid.
And I think some guys were challenged this week. And
I'm not saying they were threatened, but I think they
(59:46):
were told, hey, listen, your play is not good enough.
We're moving on. We're playing younger guys. I think we
were twelve rookies on this football team. We're playing a
lot of them and they want to play. What was
Dan Morgan? What did he says this press conference? I
want dogs, I want people that it means something. He's
trying to draft those guys. You saw how they played
(01:00:06):
about Mitchell Evans at the end of the game. Yes,
when we knelt that ball down, he was just pumped.
And to have young guys like that is so important.
You can't you can't teach that. Either guys have it
or they don't.
Speaker 11 (01:00:18):
And you know, kind of talking Andy before the game,
he said, Mitchell Evans is coming into his own and
two weeks in a row he's he's scored, and he's
blocked well and he competes, and it's just great to
see guys like Bryce and Tremaine, big, physical and really
embrace their role. I think that's important thing on a
football team is everybody's got to know their role.
Speaker 2 (01:00:36):
And he understands, Hey, I might.
Speaker 11 (01:00:37):
I think he's got eight or nine catches this year,
but runs down on special teams like a maniac, blocks
his butt off. Same thing with Lagatt coming back blocking well.
And then one thing that you know will be interesting
next week is to kind of track and see what
happens with Jalen Coke or his window opens up for
him to get back on the field, so we might
get some of our good players back. Hopefully Chewba will
start kind of recovering as well, and we can start
(01:00:58):
making a push here.
Speaker 7 (01:01:00):
And for everybody who wondered if they should pick up
Rico Dawdell on their fantasy team this week, I hope
you did. I really hope you did. Two hundred plus
yards two six second highest single game total Enfranchise history,
tying Jonathan Stewart for that on are only four behind
DiAngelo Williams. Panthers will a comeback win twenty seven to
(01:01:22):
twenty four at home against Miami.
Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
All right, fun to watch. Good win for the guys today.
Speaker 3 (01:01:27):
That's what their final thoughts were, Jay Stu, Mike, what
are your final thoughts before we exit the building today
and get away for next week.
Speaker 5 (01:01:35):
I think this is a stepping stone. I think this
is a stone that you place in the ground and
you step on it, and you have to make sure
you go throughout this week in preparation preparing the next
stone to basically put down and then step on it.
We have to stack. We have to continue to stack
the things that we do well. We have to preach discipline,
(01:01:56):
We have to preach identification. Right when you were able
to play the way the defense played this week, you
were playing that way because you had a week of preparation,
a week of talks and meetings about what you're going to.
Speaker 6 (01:02:10):
Do in this game, and they executed.
Speaker 5 (01:02:13):
I think the last you know, a couple of weeks
or anytime that we stepped on the field and you
have a game like we did against the Patriots, and
and and also you know in the secondary earlier on
this game where we didn't identify where Waller was. You know,
those are just processing things. You have to be a
good processor, meaning you have to be able to think fast.
You have to be able to realize what you see
(01:02:36):
is in identifying where you're supposed to be, where you're
supposed to be on line, and how you're supposed to
attack on certain angles, and so the processing right and
then reaction. I think we reacted the best that we've
ever reacted all year, and it's proofing the pud.
Speaker 4 (01:02:53):
And I think to dovetail on that kind of separately
is not what we saw, but what we didn't see.
And that was when the Panther was done seventeen to nothing.
You didn't see heads moping, you didn't see body language.
You saw a team that just went back to work.
And I think that's a huge sign of growth. And
I think to your point, I think that's how you
stack wins together. They have a blueprint and two really
(01:03:14):
good wins, two different styles. Kind of well, the style
was kind of similar except for today they fell behind,
but establishing the line of scrimmage on both sides of
the ball and stuff it down the other team's throat
and then be bounced offensively.
Speaker 3 (01:03:26):
All right, great stuff, Mike John, thank you, and thanks
to our crew, Hail Hammrick, Ben Blevins, Jerry Dowd, Wendell Black,
David Aids, Matt Hogan, Bibran Putman, Bernie Bowles is here,
Abbe Martin along with Eric Fiddleman Bernie.
Speaker 2 (01:03:42):
It's bulls.
Speaker 3 (01:03:42):
I'm just messing colling of bows and Sharon Thors and
Kristen Belbodie and David Langton.
Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
Appreciate you all again.
Speaker 3 (01:03:48):
The final score Pathers win over the Dolphins by a
score of twenty seven twenty four.
