Speaker 1 (00:00):
Drake, May, how we doing today?

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Let's go on, how are you doing?

Speaker 1 (00:03):
Uh, We're okay.

Speaker 3 (00:05):
If we look at yesterday's obviously your disappointed, fans are disappointed,
Coach Rabel's disappointed. If we look back at yesterday's loss,
how do you sort of summarize your performance and what
the offense was able to do and to not do
in the losing effort?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Yeah, I think, just from from my standpoint, it's just
got to be better. I think got to find a
way that was run game, get the run game going,
and then from in the passing game, I feel like
at times we moved it well and we're in a
rhythm kind of moving them all down the field, and
then whether it's in the red zone or on third
down or just be more accurate, just find of ways

(00:39):
to kind of keep drives alive and put up seven
instead of having to settle for a field goal or
getting stopped them third down.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
So, Drake, early on, it seemed like you had some success.
You had that nice drive culminating in a touchdown to
pop in the end zone. Guys even went into the
halftime up field goal, and then it seemed like the
Raiders were able to sort of get into you your
face and kind of blow up the plant, blow up
some of your plans a little bit more in the
second half. Did they do anything different than what you

(01:06):
guys expected yesterday?

Speaker 2 (01:10):
I wouldn't say that. I think you always you know,
it's the first game, so you're always expecting, you know,
some un scouted stuff or some stuff that it doesn't
show up the preseason. That's what you know. This that's
how the NFL is stuff shows up that we may
not have known. And I think you know from that one,
I think they just adjusted at halftime, and I think
we get a better job come out of half of
adjusting ourselves. And we're not even justin just executing. I

(01:33):
wouldn't say justin just executing, and that starts with with
me and those guys. So from there, make the throws
and I think on the interception, you know, those players
you want to have back from there, and that next
drive the first player miss hunt over the middle. So
just thing like that you wish you have back. And this
could be like that every the game. So it just
got to be better and just one of those things
that you can't look back at it now and and
wish you got to do it.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Then you reference the interception you guys were driving and
that was clearly a key point in the game. Now
that you've gone back watched it on tape, do you
feel like that was a miss on your part? How
much of a factor was the pressure and not being
able to step up kind of take us through what
you you think happened there?

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah, I think it's part of this league is is
making throws wile getting hit. And I think, you know,
whether there's you know, I think I had Diggs open
and just I need to fall through and you know
from there, it's just the times this happens where I
can maybe go make a play instead of you know,
stepping up there or maybe settling back at the pocket
more and and not stepping up into it. So yeah,

(02:32):
I think just unfortunate and wouldn't necessarily I would would
say it's a miss. I feel like if if I
had it back, you know, it's like I said, just
try to, you know, fall through more or don't don't
kind of step up and allow myself to get affected
by by h see Lion whoever is coming in Drake.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
I think at one point during your postgame pressor yesterday,
you talked about. I think the phrase was, uh, let
it rip. You want to you want to figure out
a way to get more comfortable and and uh and
just make a decision and play free and let it rip.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
What do you think is what? What?

Speaker 2 (03:04):
What?

Speaker 1 (03:04):
What does it?

Speaker 4 (03:05):
What's it gonna take for you to be able to
be as comfortable as you can to let it rip
and not maybe overthink sometimes on these plays.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, they just continue to get you get a feel
for these guys, I think, get the new guys out
there playing with them, just kind of get more comfortable,
corn full each week. And if like guys did a
nice tub when the ball came their way of making
plays and just got to keep on getting reps in
practicing and and seeing the stuff in the in the
that shows up in the game, you'll kind of, you know,
find tuning in practice and realize that it could show

(03:34):
up again.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Patriots quarterback Drake May here on w e I Afternoons
on a Patriots Monday. Drake earlier today on The Greg
Hill Show, Mike Frable was asked if there was a
chance that they were putting too much on your plate.
First year Josh McDaniel's system, which asks a lot of
the quarterback, and he said, we'll have to figure that out.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Do you feel like right.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Now maybe you're overwhelmed or they're putting too much quote
unquote on your plate.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
I wouldn't say that. I think at the end of
the day. I mean, you know, playing quarterback in the NFL,
there's gonna be a lot on your plate no matter
what team you played for. So just being better as
a group of you know, better in details and better
at you established in the run game and playing off
the run game and then in the past and you know, passing.
You know I play, I saw it well and this
guy's block twelve front. Just make some more throws and
from there just you know, kind of find ways. And

(04:23):
I said, to extend drives and score seven of them,
get down in the red zone. That's a big thing.
But I wouldn't say I think I'm uh ready for it,
and I think I'll get more and more comfortably tweak,
and you know, as of playing this offense.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
So it was a big day for the offensive line.
Two rookies obviously starting in front of you, and Jared
Wilson at left guard and Will Campbell over there left tackle.
How did you how did you think they did yesterday
and what kind of communication did you guys have during
the game and uh afterwards.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Yeah, I mean I think the biggest thing they played hard.
I think they you know, they blocked hard, and they
they want to be good and they want to, you know,
play well. I think that's the biggest thing I see
with those guys. And just on a like I said,
you know, kind of lived through the same experience they
did last year being a rookie. You know, I think
they kind of get it a little earlier than I did,
being out there week one and get it feel for it.
So just remind him it of a long season and

(05:10):
just attacked a new week. But you know, I thought
those guy's you know, block well and played hard, and
I got the ultimate trust in those guys on the
left side.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Drake, you said something in your press conference last week
that I thought was really interesting. You said, sometimes it
feels like quarterbacks are just gifted the captaincy and you
don't want that to be the case. You were voted
by your teammates and you want to go prove that
you're worthy of that. How do you do that this week?
I mean, you're coming off a loss coach Rabel was
talking about seeing how this team and its leaders react.

(05:39):
As a captain, Drake May, what what's your role doing
that this week?

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (05:43):
I think it starts this week in practice. You know,
it starts showing up and you're having a goody up
to it and you know, you know, practicing well and
it goes out there on Sunday and playing well. I
think that's what kind of gets these guys, you know,
respect the motes is and you'll keep working. And it
was a long season ahead and just know that Clinton,
You're gonna work every day and just kind of bring
guys along with me and and challenge guys and challenge

(06:05):
our guys on offense be you know, more detailed and
you know depth and routes and you know past game
inside out and then stuff like that that just shows
up in the game. So just starts with me, just
to speaking practice and carry into the game.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
Earlier today on our station, your teammate Christian Ellis said
that after a loss, he has a very hard time sleeping.
As a matter of fact, he uh might just left
two and a half three hours, he said, woke up,
rewatch the move, rewatch the film several times watched a
little bit of the game last night in Buffalo, then
watched your game tape again. What's the what's the postgame
process for you?

Speaker 1 (06:36):
Like in defeat?

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah, I think this moment of film comes out. I love,
you know, I love taking a quick look at it
and then yeah, I think it's It's tough. It's hard
to kind of especially after a loss, to kind of
go about your day and not think about the game
or think what I could done better. So, uh, you know,
it's tough to take a look at the players and
and you know, text guys, I thought it did a
good job, and uh, tice guys. They need some you know,

(07:01):
some some encouragement and you know, talk with coach you
know that night and then come back in the morning
and and take Louis as with the team and then
from there just trying to move on the next week,
you know, after you know this Monday and get back
at it.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
You mentioned earlier that as an NFL quarterback, there's always
going to be a lot on your plate. Have you
accepted the way people sort of micro analyze everything you do,
whether it's media, fans, even your coaches, you know, make
sure you celebrate the right right way, make sure you
react the right way to an interception. Have you accepted
that sort of microscopic over analysis of everything you do? Uh?

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Yeah, I think that's just part of playing this position.
I think there's a lot that comes with it. And
you know, I'm thinking at the end of the day,
I can you know the best team does move forward.
You know, have a positive attitude and like I said,
just know that you know, odds are on me at
all times. I think whether it's you know, players or
teammates or coaches or you know, fans, they want to see
me you play well and they're pulling for me hard.

(07:58):
So as I can do is try to be my
best out there, you know, weekend and week out, Drake.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
Obviously next week you are moving on to Miami. They
had a very tough one yesterday out in Indianapolis. A
tough one for you last year in Miami as well. Uh,
what do you guys see in the Dolphins and what
are you guys going to need to do to get
ready to go to Miami and hopefully get your first
win in the season and a big win in the
AFC East.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, I think it's a division opponent anytime you're playing
a division opponent, you know, it means something, means something
a little extra and we're playing you know, another time
later this year, So try to get a good grass
of them. You don't have much much film, you know,
as a as you do with teams later on in
the year. But uh, you got a week of them
playing a real game, and you got a week of
their personnel. And I'm so preasing in games of what

(08:42):
they like to do. So take a look back what
did against against me last year and watched that game.
And then from there, just like I said, just I
think working on ourselves at practice out there, and uh,
don't overthink it, and and get a good grasp of
what they do and then try to do what we
do at a high level.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Many here with us on w E I afternoons on
a Patriots Monday, Drake, this is gonna sound like a
weird question, but it's a topic that has come up.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Uh, how much do you want to win? There?

Speaker 3 (09:10):
There are people out there that are wondering, are you, like,
do you have the killer instinct to win?

Speaker 1 (09:13):
How much do you want to win? In the NFL?

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Sure, that's why That's why I play the game. You
play the game, will win, and that's what we're all,
you know, spend so much time doing you know, winning.
I think, you know, losing has got Tony to learn
from it and build it. But she winning is a
she'd opened the goal playing this game. And they ask
what you play for to win super Bowls? And you
know it starts with us with winning, winning each week,
and I wouldn't be doing anything do anything else ide winning.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Okay, Now I feel it's my job to ask you
a more lighthearted question coming coming off of a tough
spot one like that. But someone had asked Mike Rabil
about that earlier.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
On the day.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
So now you're about uh Carolina guy, year and a
half into your New England residency. What's your favorite and
least favorite thing about living in New England?

Speaker 2 (09:58):
That's far Drake ooh favorite thing. That's a good question.
I think this uh, this kind of the the uh
just how they embrace I think they embrace you know,
us players in New England. I think that's probably my
favorite things. They you know, the hard, they love football,

(10:19):
they love the Patriots, and they pulled for it's hard
and it's uh a very sports driven city. I think
that's one of the best things about Boston. I think
the history of Boston is pretty cool. And then least favorite.
Uh nothing, nothing too much, you know, I think gets
colder than where I'm from. But the whole they bothered me.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
But uh, traffic maybe.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Yeah, yeah, maybe the traffic, Yeah, there you go. That's
a good one. Maybe the tunnels probably said traffic in
the tunnel a little worse. You don't get the phone
doesn't work under there either.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
So were you uh surprise you you mentioned the fans
and and how big a sports city it is. Uh,
I've talked to players in the past that came from
other NFL cities, and I know you don't have a
camp in the NFL, But were you surprised just how
much media attention there is, how many reporters there are
at training camp practices, how many fans there are, just
sort of that attention to every day of Patriots work

(11:09):
that's put on you guys.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
I think that's what too, That's what they build hold
their past. I think that's what they build here. I
think the how much you know, attention and eyes or
problem because how successful they were and the Super Bowls
that they want so shoot, I think that comes with
being a patriot, and it comes with this city. They
love winning and you know we expect to win. That
think that's the work we're all building towards. And shoot,
I think you know, I've said in the past, I

(11:33):
think at a point you get tired of losing and
and so I think just just trying to get the win,
colmis you know each week is is our mindset.

Speaker 4 (11:42):
Obviously there are a lot of people that you probably
get comped to in the NFL or in recent professional football.
But is there anyone I don't think we've had a
chance to ask you this. Is there anyone you model
your game after or that you most try to emulate
with your style of play and your game? Uh?

Speaker 2 (12:01):
Shoot, no, I mean particularly you try to take little
things from you know, each players across the league on Sundays,
I think different guys to do things well, So I
think you see, you know, the pump fakes of guys
like Mahomes and then he did one this fast league
and get charged at pump ticking defenders and getting them
the jump and running around them. So just little things
that you see from from uh, you know, quarterbacks across

(12:23):
the league and things you try to take into your game.
But you know, particularly I was a huge fan of
Cam Newton growing up, so that was my favorite players
of Panthers fans. But uh, not just trying to be
you know, Drake may out there and be as actor
as I can.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
Time now for the quarterback question of the week. Drake,
you probably knew you were going to get something along
these lines. We figured we'd let Joe and Lakeville ask you.
He said, as a U n C alum, what was
your reaction to the revelation that Bill Belichick has banned
Patriots scouts from UNC practices.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
Yeah, I mean that really is too much a deal
for me. I think, you know, welcome back was there
this past summer, so uh no, I'm following him and
cheering for m and pulling for him. But yeah, I think,
uh sure, I could they need a Sure, I'll check
in on them and and uh you know, watch their game.

(13:14):
So just pulling for him, and uh, regardless of the scouts.
I mean, it's it's portrait for them. But like I said,
it's Coach Belichick's program, so he does, you know, what
he needs, what he wants to do.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
All right, Drake, we appreciate you joining us. Good luck
next week in Miami. Hope hope we get a bounce back.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
One yes, sure sounds good thing.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
Guys, Thanks, thanks talking next week
