Here's Matt Smith and.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
We welcome you into the studio here in Foxboro, massachusettst
Jewett Stadium with the neome of Patriots have picked up
their third win of the year and beating the Chicago
Bears in Chicago by a score of nineteen to three.
The big number on the board today sacks nine sacksnine secondnine,
I think second all time in franchise record. Terrific performance
(01:57):
by the defensive team today. You can reach us first
on the phone line at eighty five to five Pats
five hundred, and you could email us at podcasts at
Patriots dot com. That's a good win today. Boys, Mike
lead us off.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Really good rent win. You know, I think it was
a total team effort. I mean, it was a little
bit of a grind at first. It felt like they
were a little bit, I don't know, kind of stuck
in mud, at least offensively. But there were some initial
signs of life in the run game today, So I
think that kind of helped settle things in a little
bit and they started to find a little bit of
rhythm on offense. You know, it wasn't perfect, wasn't dominating that.
But the defense, on the other hand, they were dominant.
(02:34):
They were effective. I mean, I'm just shocked. I haven't
seen that kind of performance from them in a long time,
with the pressure and how it just it kept up
through the whole game. I mean, I think they allowed
what like one meaningful third down conversion the whole game.
I'm not sure about those last couple drives at the end,
but just give defense a lot of credit.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
They played really hard.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
They thought everything I talked about that ran I went
on at the beginning of the game. Get the run
game going, defense, give the kid a chance, you know,
punt return a couple of nice ones by Marcus Jones
as well, So team effort. Nice win for those guys.
I feel, I feel really good for them.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
This is the Patriots postgame Show, presented by Draft Kings
and Paul. Much was made in our pregame show about
the Chicago Bears offensive line, and I think the Patriots
defensive coaches certainly noticed inter advantage of that situation advantage
and big advantage. Patriots.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Yeah, that was the key to the game for me,
was to pressure Caleb Williams. Not that I envisioned the
Patriots defense as a whole playing the way it did today.
This was a lot less. I mean, I know what
the sack total was but this was about all around
defense that they played. I thought in the first quarter.
I think this game was won in the first quarter.
(03:39):
The Bears took over constantly with great field position, and
they did not allow DeAndre Swift to control the game
the way they allowed every other running back that they
faced over the last eight weeks to control the game.
That to me was the difference in the game. This
is all about the Patriots defense, all eleven of the
guys you know more than that, obviously, but hats off
(04:00):
to DeMarcus Covington. I think they were very well prepared
for admittedly a horrific offense that is in a bad
way right now. But they made that team look like
a high school team today offensively, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
And showcase some really bad body language showing the Caleb
Williams looks like he wants to be.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
If I were Caleb Williams, I would quit like that.
If you talk about give the kids some help, like
trying to go out there and play with that situation,
they got nothing they got. I mean Cole kametzretty good player,
was targeted to get gets blanketed by del Pettis. Give me,
give me an effort. There wasn't a guy on Chicago
that had even a semblance of of care in that game. Today.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
No, there's a famous quote many many, many moons ago
from a television broadcaster who said they hate their coach,
and boy, the Beers surely played like they did, don't they?
Speaker 3 (04:50):
In Yeah but that, But like I'm to me, the
focus is on on Covington. I think Covington did something
today that I haven't seen. That's the best defensive game
they've played since the first one. And unlike the first
one when the Bengals kind of helped them, the Patriots
dominated this game defensively. They stopped the run, they stopped
(05:11):
the pass, and when the game was out of hands,
they they got all over Caleb Williams. So this was
like a thorough beat down one hundred and forty two
total yards. I mean, that's that's ridiculous domination.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
And you know, again, as where what are the kids
like to say, Mike giving flowers?
Speaker 2 (05:27):
I'm glad you're asking me that match. Sure, as Kim,
I'm the only one on this side of fifty.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
If we're gonna give barely, if we're gonna give DeMarcus
coving to the flowers, how about the use of Brendan
Schooler on defense as a spy.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yeah, that's a nice touch. Yeah, they've got to get
picked up the sack there.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Uh, you know, I think they're just they're dipping into
the bag of tricks a little bit. I think you
saw some personnel adjustments. You saw Curtis Jacobs out there
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
You saw a lot of it because you're either they
got no one out there. Yeah, I'm sorry, Well I
go ahead.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
No, I was just gonna say it seemed weird out
of the gate that they were kind of doing some
of that stuff, and then it seemed like its settled in.
And then the king on Whites who didn't who seem
like he was on like a third down roll early on.
Then he re you know, reintegrated into the into the lineup.
But uh, you know, I think it's just along the
lines of what pulse it's, you know, credit DeMarcus Covington's
spinning the lineup a little bit, you know, some of
the personnel. But I mean generally they kind of went
back to what they've been doing. But those guys were effective.
(06:22):
Julani Tavai is you know, all over the place, and
Tetrick Whise you know, taking advantage of backup tackles like
he should as a as a veteran from around here.
So it was a lot, a lot of good stuff
on the defense.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
More flowers, uh on play for Jeremiah Farms, yea. Kevin
Kluegler said it early on, who's not exactly a student
of the Patriots, hasn't done many Patriots games, and said
very early on, this might be the best game of
Jeremiah Farm's NFL career, and.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
He's right, Yeah, I want to put him on the
good list.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
I'm exhausting my good list. I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
So then let's kick it off, Matt, my apologize, Paul.
Speaker 6 (06:58):
That was Mike.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Now it's time for the good.
Speaker 7 (07:01):
Pretty good, they pretty good, the bad.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
And the injured.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Ah ah, you are right.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Guy, the good, the bad, and the injured, and so Mike, yeah,
let's just keep it.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Let's keep it rolling with Jeremi Farms. I mean, usually
I go, you know, I first look at at the
team's stats on defense, so I you know, side sometimes
I mean the third down defense the past I saw.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
But let's start with you.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Know, Jeremiah Farms, who I think is one of those
guys who has gotten an opportunity. Talked about him in
the pregame show a little bit, these guys who opportunities
present themselves for them and no one had really I
felt like taken great advantage of it. And Jeremi Farms
had a really good summer. I mean early on he
was the TACA camp, you know, the first few days whatever,
you know, for whatever it counts for. But you know
(07:51):
a guy who's been on the practice squad for a
while and has developed, I mean I had him down.
I had three checks. I had him for a sack,
I had him for two tackles for loss. Those are
just my check marks. But just giving you a complimentary
defensive tackle is something so critical that they need. You know,
you like what Godshaw does and brings, but he's kind
of on an island in terms of production right now,
and to have a second guy step up and help
(08:13):
him out critical area. I mean, you saw Paul kind
of talked about I mean, I thought was swift. There
were some moments.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Where you're like, ooh, there's a crease right, well, there's
eight yards.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
You know, there were a couple of those, and then
all of a sudden, you know, Jeremiah Farm is one
of the guys leading the way tackle for loss. You know,
now it's third and long again instead of him ripping
off eight yards of care. So I think he was
specifically a big part of kind of setting that defensive
tone early. Where are we gonna get run over today?
Or are we going to step up and you know,
get some stops and send send a message? And I
thought that's what they did, and Jeremiah Farms was was
(08:42):
leading the way. So credit to him because.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
He's an easy kid to root for with his story
in the backstory, you know, and so just determined, you know,
not the most physically gifted guy around there or anything
like that. Who would have thought he'd still probably even
playing in the National Football League and to play today
and play as well as he did today. Very very good, Paul,
who's on the top of your nice list as opposed
to Noughty I touched on it.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
I just think DeMarcus Covington, you know, with the different
like it seemed like every time Chicago tried to dial
something up that was a little bit different. The Patriots
were a step ahead. They had a little third down
play where they're gonna, you know, do the belly motion,
you know the orbit motion with Dj Moore and Marcus
Jones is in the slot. He's coming on a blitz.
(09:24):
He stops, missed the play, but sort of disrupted it
enough that once more catch the ball. Jalen Hawkins is
there to make the tackle because no one's really there
to block them because two guys had flashed. There was
another another instance like what Mike is talking about, where
it looks like Swift is starting to get Swift is
(09:45):
starting to heat up a little bit, and you know,
all of a sudden, you know, they're trying to hit
those creases and Swift has nothing, you know, on on
the outside. And Daryl Johnson talked about it a lot.
You know, that's they want to test the edges. They
want to test the edges. Well, they tested the edges
today and they couldn't get them because I think Covington
was a step ahead of them. So I really thought
(10:06):
the game plan and especially considering that tough field position
they inherited. I believe the first three times Chicago had
the ball, they were in favorable spots and they could
not move the ball at all. So one of the
things that hats off to Covington.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Yeah, one of the things he did, and I liked
it is in obvious passing situations, third down situations, they
sort of they kind of juked in and looked like, Okay,
this is gonna be zero blitz. You know, everybody's coming.
And with that inexperienced Chicago Beer offensive line, whether they
actually did pressure and brought everybody or not that through them.
(10:39):
They got a couple penalties later in the game on that.
I thought that that was a nice little touch to
sort of fake that and then jump back and everything.
And I thought that was a again DeMarcus Comington and
the defensive staff hats off. They coached the will.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Of a game today. They sure did.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
I mean, I you know, I wasn't sure if they
had this kind of game in them, but they you know,
like you said, I mean, I think it was to
me and this, I mean, I reserved the right after,
you know, we go back and check the film. But
it seemed like it was a lot of the defensive
coordinators orchestration of the past rush and picking his spots
and some of the design, you know, other than straight
(11:15):
four man rush. These guys were winning. It felt like
they really did a lot of damage with their scheme today.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
Okay, we got this now, Matt, Yes or no, two
minutes or no, Great, that's what we're gonna do. Great
and joining us now speaking of defense and what a
performance today. It's number thirty three in the scoreboard. Infrety
Jennings joined us from the victorious Patriots locker room. Anfrety,
thanks for joining us in congratulations on a terrific win today. Hello, Hi, Anfrey.
(11:42):
Can you hear congratulations on the win today?
Speaker 8 (11:44):
I appreciate it, Innfony.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
What was it about today?
Speaker 2 (11:47):
How you guys came out and wanted to play It
just seemed like the whole game you guys were playing
hard and dictating.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
To the Bears offense.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
What was what was just kind of the attitude in
the mindset going into this one.
Speaker 8 (11:58):
I think we just tell you overall, you know, good defense. Uh,
you know, we prided ourselves this whole week off, you know,
showing up with attitude and you know, stopping the run
and you know, just winning third don and keeping the
quarterback in the pipe.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
So I know we're gonna talk a lot about that.
Oh sorry, go ahead, Anthony, you still you still have us,
can you hear us?
Speaker 8 (12:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Okay, sorry about that. I didn't mean to cut you off.
I know we're going to talk a lot about the
pressure you guys had on Caleb Williams with all the
sad but what was the key for you guys really
controlling DeAndre Swift? Because I thought, especially early in the
game when you guys took over some you know, not
so great situations field position wise, you guys did a
great job of containing him. What was the key for
(12:45):
you guys fixing up the run defense?
Speaker 8 (12:49):
Yeah, we all just, uh, we'll play good. We played
with good run fundamentals. Everybody flew around, we gain tackle
and you know it really wanted a lot of space
for him to you know, get going. So you know
that that that translated throughout the game. And you know
we did a good job throughout the game, and you
know that that was the resources that we got.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
And for you, you pick up two sacks.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
You're one of seven different defenders today to register a
sack on Kayle Williams. What does that do for the
defense when everybody is involved and getting those kind of
big plays.
Speaker 8 (13:22):
Man, do a lot. You know, we kind of had
the momentum throughout.
Speaker 9 (13:26):
The whole game.
Speaker 8 (13:27):
You know, got out to a fast start, defense, and
you know that was pretty much the story of the
whole game. We you know, we just continue to keep
our foot on the gas and try to play a
good company football.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
When you have a game plan like that, Anthony, and
you know that the other team's a little shorthanded on
the offensive line, it's got to be some excitement among
that front seven. You know, you're gonna get some chances
to get to get after the passer. And it looked
like everybody had a chance today. Was there a sort
of like one of those let's let's let's get to
you know that the quick start and get him in
those situations and let's get after it.
Speaker 8 (14:03):
Yeah, uh, you know, we just we just wanted to
get him a third down and you know, uh, you know,
contain him. And you know, uh, we sold pretty good
about our mexos on the back end, and you know,
we just all we took upon ourselves to just you know,
try to get out to the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
And you know, we have to say that they Anthony
Saturday Night Roll tied today Patch Roll beers pretty good.
Speaker 8 (14:27):
Weekend, right, Yeah, most definitely the long time.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Anthony Jennings, thank you very much, great job. Congratulations on
the win today, have a safe flight, Thank.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
You, congrats. Yeah, it's got to be one of those
like when you know right, yeah, I mean that's I
wish you had just taken over for me because I
couldn't figure out exactly how to say it. That's exactly
what I meant, Like, you know, you know that those
guys up there, like you're gonna get a chance to
get I'm going to get it. I mean every I
(14:58):
mean it was like everybody knew that at something. You
keep getting them in third down situations and you you
got a to school lead the whole second half, you're
going to get an opportunity to get to the passer.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
The postgame player interview is presented by Microsoft Surface. A
big thank you to our partner, Microsoft Surface, the official
sideline technology provider and laptop of the NFL and New
England Patriots that provides players and coaches with the tools
to succeed both on and off the field. Check out
the new Surface Pro designed to keep up with you
as the most flexible, most powerful too and one laptop
and tablet out there at dot com. Always good to
(15:32):
check in with the Patriots players after a win. Let's
continue with the good the bad and the injured. Paul
your next up? Who's on your nice list?
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Okay, So I talked a lot about defensive players, and
I'm sure we'll talk about some more. But offensively, I
thought Austin Hooper was was really good in this game.
I thought terrible spot by the way in the Steelers
Washington game, I think it's gonna probably get overturned by
replay and give Washington another opportunity here.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
But can I get the song, Matt.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
There's one one point game here, that's fourth and nine.
Zach Ertz makes the catch. The They spotted this ball
a good yard short of where he caught it and
turned it over on downs to Pittsburgh. But I think
this goes to replay automatically if I'm ye under review now. Anyway,
I thought Austin Hooper was was really I mean, what
are we talking about. We're talking about that game that
(16:23):
we just saw. I'm new to this. I'm talking about
the actual NFL game instead have taken place three but
three catches for sixty four yards, and I thought the
twenty eight yard of to kick things off Mike terrific.
On the first drive. You know, he gets down they've
had opportunities to make that particular play this year, that
little over route almost you know, to the tight end,
(16:44):
and they haven't been able to make it. You guys
are seen the same replay. You guys telling me that
he doesn't have the first down on this easily they
mark him a full yard short. Anyway, Austin Hooper on
my good list.
Speaker 4 (16:55):
Okay, can I just jim in another defensive one before
you guys continue jam it. I was a few weeks
ahead of the game on this. Marcus Jones on defense again,
Like on defense? Yeah, on defense, okay, like I think
he he just plays hard. He gives up a lot physically.
I actually thought he played well again on defense. He
made a couple of plays again the instinctive play to
(17:19):
kind of on the on the bubble screen where he
was gonna come in and blitz, and he threw the
timing of that playoff, so that was it Hawkins to
come in and make the tackle.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
He hit a couple of plays very similar to that,
where he's just he he competes. I want more guys
like him on the team. I just wish they were
a little bit taller than Marcus. That's all. And of
course he was said as usual in the punty Drink game,
except for.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
That one there there was no well no, just the.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
One was and another one he stopped on one. He
did bubble a couple. He did set up a field
goal at.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
The end of the half though he put some nice returns.
I had him for you know, fourth down PBu two,
So yeah, I had him.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
Paul dismisses him out of hand when he's one of
the eleven.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Defensively, Yeah, he doesn't care for the defenders.
Speaker 4 (18:03):
Yeah, he he likes his defenders other than five to seven.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Well, I mean, I I'd like to think it's the
NFL and like trying isn't really like he competes.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
Okay, well, hey what did we What did Mike I
think say it.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
I think the entire defense goes on the good list today.
I think the defense dominated. I'm not telling you that.
I just he would have been like ninth or ten.
Like the secondary in general didn't have really much to
do to like, I think there was the on seven
that dominated the game.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
Said in the pregame show, he wants a team that's
a pain in the ass. You know what, The Patriots
were pain in the ass today. For the Bears.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
They were they were definitely, I mean definitely that the
pass rush was was great. I mean that's why I
mean I, like Paul said, we could go down through everything,
but just the third down, the continued pressure, I mean,
finishing the game out like I with passion at the
end of the game. I love the.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
Knockdown that del Pettis had on Cole Kmet, Like that's
a play. Yeah, sack. He had a sack on a
blitz before. You know, like the you know, if we're
gonna just like individual players on defense, I just think
there'd be a lot I would get.
Speaker 4 (19:02):
To, Yeah, the defense as a whole, and and DeMarcus
coming to and I think covers that well on the
offensive side of the ball. Where or where would you
grade the quarterback today?
Speaker 2 (19:13):
You know, I'm tempted just to put him on because
there wasn't perfect, But I just think anytime you get
your first win, first win for Drake, you know, you
made some throws downfield. There were you know, I just
think it was a little sporadic today. I guess that's
kind of how it was a real today. My feel was,
but there was enough good there, Like, like I don't
feel like, I'm not like what a game by Drake
May it was. It was what it was, But I
(19:34):
still think, like you go into Chicago road game against
Caleb Williams. I know he's not playing directly with him,
but like I said, we know what the narrative kind
of is going into this game. I would put I
would put Drake on uh just because he didn't. I
mean I was kind of worried that he was going
to turn the ball over in the like fourth quarter, and.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
He's on my bad list, bad list. I don't think
he played very well.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
I don't think he played very well. Did he managed
did he manage the game? No, that's and that's what
that's why he's on the bad list. I think the
second half puts him on the bad list. All you
needed to do was keep the ball out of harm's way,
and he threw it right to the other team. They
dropped it, but he threw it right to the other
That's the only way you.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
Could lose this game. You playing the end zone your Yes? Yeah,
I thought he had some other reckless runs where he
refuses to slide. I listened. I love Drake May. I
don't think today. I think today was his worst game
out of the five that he's played.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
I don't know that I would disagree with you, however,
just to try to balance Paul's negativity a little bit.
In the fourth quarter, I think it was their first
position of the quarter May plus nineteen on a scramble.
That was a really good play and as I yelped
a little.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
Bit, one of the plays he was reckless with.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
As I yelped a little bit on third and one
when they threw the ball as opposed to running the ball,
and it was a well designed play and he hit
Hunter Henry and that really was a ball game. Around
the four minute twenty second mark, I thought that that
was a pretty good play.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
I was waiting for Alex van Pelt to get criticized
for that. Yeah, I didn't say he didn't make any
good plays. The throw that I credited Hooper with was
a great, really good throw. But unfortunately that's the really
good throw we made until like the last drive of
the first half. He was off early. I think he
had a couple of miscommunications with the receivers where they're
(21:16):
in trying to sit in zones and he's thrown behind him.
I think he missed Henry in the end zone by
a lot on that play that should have been picked off.
And he's got to start to slide. I'm sorry, he
has to slide. That's your reckless I don't like the
the bombs into double coverage, the two more of those today.
I just don't think he I don't think he was
(21:36):
very good today.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
I don't convince me.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
I'm not telling you. Listen, this doesn't mean like this
is a referendum on oh well they figured out Drake.
Speaker 7 (21:46):
No.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
I just I don't think he was as accurate today
as I've seen him, you know, And I don't think
he was seeing I think both quarterbacks really had a
hard time seeing the field today, especially early in the
game in the first half. I think both guys weren't
really under a lot of pressure and kept taking sacks
or having to run around a little bit to throw
the ball away. Like those aren't those are not good plays,
(22:08):
like throwing the ball into double cut, like just because
you have a shot drawn up this Paul should probably
look that's that's just not good.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
Yeah, I said that game, Paul, I think that's it.
I'm definitely in agreement with you on that one. He's
got to stop just throwing up.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
And that's the only way they could have lost this game,
because the Bears could have taken over all day and
not scored. The Patriots defense was that dominant today, So
the only way you could lose is if you gave
the other team some points and he tried.
Speaker 4 (22:37):
Okay, are your good lists complete?
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Well, I mean it depends on how much time you
want to spend go to like.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
We've got to five. Yeah. If I was gonna say,
if we're going to start going down the list of individuals,
I had Dietrich wise to my go ahead.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
Yeah, I was just you know, two sacks, But I
just thought he was just disruptive. Hopefully he's not hurt.
I did see him get dinged there, slow to get
up at the end at the end, but uh no,
I think that. I mean, yeah, that's kind of all
I I that really jumped out to me. I think
we've talked about pretty much the main players.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Yeah. I also had Keyon White, who I thought was
more active in this game than we've seen him in
about a month and a half. I thought his presence
was in the run game, running down some place to
the edge. Yeah, I thought his his mobility was impressive today.
I thought he had some good good pressure, some good uh.
I don't know the sacks. I mean it felt like
(23:31):
everybody had him. I don't know where we factored in there,
but I liked his play in the Run game today
more than i've seen so I had him. I mentioned
del Pettis. I thought he was really active.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
Here's the one that didn't get mentioned or that I
haven't heard yet. Maybe you're going to disagree with me,
likely a VP.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
So here's the thing that I made a comment to
Mike during the game. Yes, I would agree, Matt. I
said to Mike, I think there were more plays in
this game that were creatively designed than I've seen all
year combined. Now it gets back to my previous whining,
and I'll call it whining with with Drake. I think
they missed him. I think they had some plays to
(24:11):
be made today. They dialed up and either they might
have completed him, but he made the guy spin around
to catch it, or he just missed him. You know,
there was some plays to be made. I didn't like
that you could put that You could put that play away.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
The TV, but Arthur is usually supposed to be a
shot play like you don't really do like a double
reverse in the screen, but not only at double reverse,
the slowest developing double reverse I've ever seen. Yeah, I
think the way you put it, though, Paul, that that
that's probably a better way I think to sum up
how I felt about the offensive performance instead of trying
to like highlight Drake, like, I think you're right, Like,
I think AVP did a good job of kind of
(24:48):
managing this game a little bit. And you know, it
was Drake's kind of like boneheaded whoa whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,
don't throw that ball, those kind of moments that that,
you know, brought it down a little bit. But I'd agree,
I think AVP had a pretty strong day.
Speaker 3 (24:59):
I yeah, I would definitely co sign with Matt on
Alex Vampell.
Speaker 4 (25:03):
When we talked in the pregame show, we said, you know,
it would be critical to try to take advantage of
the poorly rated Bears run defense. And I thought, for really,
for the first time, for the entire game, Drake may
had a complimentary running game that he could lean on
a little bit. What did was Ramondre four yards to
carry or something like that? He wasn't I thought it
was ten.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
For three point seven seventy four yards.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
Sorry he was okay, you know they ran it better
today than they having a long time.
Speaker 4 (25:31):
Yeah, Gibson came and he played a little bit today, So.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
I have a question about that.
Speaker 4 (25:35):
Yeah, where's your pen?
Speaker 2 (25:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (25:37):
Yeah in the game. Where was he in the game?
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Yeah? I don't know.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
All of a sudden, you know, you're killing the clock. Oh,
let's go to fresh legs. According to Daryl Johnston, Antonio Gibson,
what do you think that was about?
Speaker 2 (25:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
And I'm not just not being critical at all. I'm
asking legitimately, which is where do you think that came from?
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Latest weird thing on a weird season for him? Of
you know, like the only thing that would really make
sense to me is that he's he's got an injury.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
But I don't like that.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
Nothing makes sense. Nothing makes sense to me. Like he
looks like he's running pretty hard right here.
Speaker 3 (26:05):
Fine, but he had a ten yard run in the
other four were pedestrian, but more about like.
Speaker 2 (26:12):
Yeahs, like Hasty was the two back and he was
kind of the three guy. But then he did come
in at the end when the game's kind of on
the line and you're trying to ice it out. You're
not just all that. Now, let's get our third running
back snaps like it's weird. It's been weird all season
with him. I mean going back to what we thought
he was coming in is kind of a third down
seating back. You don't really see that out of him.
So yeah, I'm not I'm not really sure.
Speaker 4 (26:33):
Okay, what else are on the bad list?
Speaker 3 (26:35):
Paul on the bad list? What do I have in
the bad list? Well, I would I would start with
special teams. Again, it's amazing that special teams are finding
a way to get on the bad list while Marcus
Jones is contributing with a decent punt return seemingly every week.
But you let up a long punt return thirty eight yards.
(26:57):
You got a penalty on a kickoff. That's your third
I think of the year. You know this one for
not kicking it properly. You get another penalty on a
punt on an alignment issue by Joe Giles Harris. Too
many mistakes and special teams.
Speaker 4 (27:14):
When they kicked it and made the Bears return it,
they got out to the thirty five. So just add
that to the list.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
Well, that's on my list as well.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
Yeah, I hated that first return, like right off the gate,
the thirty eight yard or right off the top. I mean,
just you know, it's it's just tone like it's you know,
this team's up against it. They need every play they can,
and then right off the get go you give up
almost a forty yard return.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
That's why I get the defense so much credit, because
they were putting a lot of bad spots yep.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
Really in the game, yep, Michael, who else was on
your bad list? I think we agreed that special teams
was on the top of the list.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Yeah, special teams for sure. God, I don't really I
guess have some little stuff, but I don't really have anything.
I mean, I think the discussion of Drake was really
like I had him down as just because of the interception,
and that's.
Speaker 3 (28:02):
Real, That's really all I had. But I don't. I
don't think the drafts production was okay.
Speaker 2 (28:07):
I do too, thought the run game was okay. You know,
hard to really point fingers at guys who weren't overly productive,
you know, I don't think there were the drops or
like the mental mistakes. I mean, I you know, I
have like a little check next to Osbourne for the
illegal touching. But even that one was like, it wasn't
like he ran out of bounds amindedly, like he kind
of accidentally.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
Sure he didn't. Yeah, I'm sure he didn't know he's done.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
I'm saying put him on for that, you know. Otherwise, No,
I think it was a pretty pretty solid day. Hard
to put anybody from defense on there. I mean they
all prayed, played hard throughout.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
I didn't have anybody else.
Speaker 4 (28:41):
Okay. On the injury front, yeah, few. Who did you notice?
Speaker 2 (28:46):
We had Jaquelin Roy he went out with a neck injury.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
I don't believe you return.
Speaker 10 (28:51):
No.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Mark Marcellus Dial had a head injury. He was ruled
out officially, so it seems like a concussion for him.
See any Taki Taki left with a hamstring and then
Dietrich Wise limped off with like an ankle injury toward
the end for him. So that was the four, the
four that I had.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
Of the four to me, and it sounds weird coming
out of my mouth, the Taki Taki injury, just because
they're so depleted at linebacker.
Speaker 2 (29:15):
You know, it's like the second you get him back,
he's out. He's got quacking out, So I don't. I mean, honestly,
it might be all connected the way he's had to
fight back from injury. I mean, he's one of those
guys that just seems like he's been dealing with something
since the summer and in camp. So maybe it's connected
to the ongoing issue that he's had.
Speaker 4 (29:31):
And I'd be interested to hear from the coaching staff.
Gerrod DeMarcus, you know, was the Schooler spy a byproduct
of a numbers game and that they just don't have
anybody in there, and maybe you know, he can at
least move a little bit in space, so he makes
him that makes him maybe a decent candidate to try
to keep an eye on Williams.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Yeah, I mean I think if you know, I think
if you if you lined up the safeties and the linebackers,
the Schooler might run the best of all, right, you know,
like so that that that might be the thing in there.
But you know, I like that they that they sent
him in though, to on a blitz, like you know,
they're not just like line.
Speaker 3 (30:05):
Them up bus the defensive lineman that was that was
a spy play, right, and then his guy stayed double
team the edge and then he just went and tackled him,
right right, I mean, it is what it is, heads
up play. The other team's like, I mean, I think
you saw what happens when you have like offensive lineman
(30:25):
seven through eleven playing.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
Yeah. Well, we're just getting warmed up here. On the

Welcoming back to the Patriots postgame Show, presented by Draftkingshe
the Patriots were nineteen to three winners in Chicago over
the Beers. Today the Patriots Postgame Show is also brought
to you by bud Light, Easy to drink, Easier to enjoy,
bud Light, the official beer sponsor of the of the Patriots.
I'm hoping the Patriot fans out there are gonna crack one,
maybe with a little celebration today, I hope.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
So I'm gonna get home in time to have one, right, Hey,
I guess celebrate a victory no defeat donut today.
Speaker 4 (34:53):
Good to hear, Good to hear to the electronic mail,
and first up is Phil from Brazil, who writes a
little wordy but that's okay, not the worst game we've
seen so far this season. But what a bad day
for offensive line fans today felt like the offensive line
wasn't all our The Patriots offensive line wasn't all that
bad because of the Bears offensive line, but the eye
test wasn't good for either. I felt like so Jordan
(35:15):
and others would miss a block and just surrender the play.
Even in the first quarter. They looked gassed. So he
asks what changes can we make to create a competitive
offensive line for twenty twenty five. He assumes drafting a
left tackle his first priority, but we also need to
address the interior or can Strange bounce back from injury?
(35:35):
Should we talk about a new offensive line coach to
bring more poison energy? Right now, I don't know if
these are bad players doing a bad job, or if
they are okay players that just aren't motivated into play
soft again wordy, I apologize.
Speaker 14 (35:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (35:48):
It's just not really where my head's at right now.
I just want to get a win for those guys.
And I thought they were better. I thought they bounce back,
and I just want to see how they if they
can build on it, if they can build some continuity,
And I don't know how many changes they're gonna need.
I mean, David Andrews is under contract next year, but
I think, you know, his uncertainty makes you think the
center position might be under question. So you know it
is this Ben Brown kid any good. I just think
(36:09):
there are a lot of things to be answered over
these last seven games that you know, you can't just
jump right to the offseason and wipe these guys out.
I'm still holding out hope that some of these guys
are good and can be part of things next year.
Speaker 4 (36:21):
And we saw a little hope today. Let's in't perfect,
like we said, we saw.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
Many tell you whin a game like that, you know,
I mean it's look, you know me, I'm a defense guy.
I love, you know, watching that side of the ball,
and I just I've been disappointed this year. It's been
a big drop off from you know, kind of what
we've been used to. Regardless of you know, who they've played,
they just haven't been able to make plays enough. And
I think you saw it today. You saw some plays.
So you know, do I think that they're headed to No,
(36:45):
I don't. It doesn't mean everything, but it just it
restores a little bit of faith that these guys have
the tools to win football games. And now they've got
to start to try to stack it, and you know,
they've got these games coming up here at the end
of the season. A lot of teams like on the bubble,
not Buffalo, but otherwise, a lot of teams in the
two conferences in the middle on the bubble trying to
get a playoffs. But you know that's the next step
for this team. That for the Patriots, they want to
(37:07):
get to be one of those bubble teams. So start
beating some of them. Start beating these teams like Chicago
where a four and four and you know in the
mix still and then you'll start to prove some things.
Speaker 4 (37:15):
So don't be a one and done paint in the
ass team. Be a consistent thing.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
Well do it, yeah, do it against a good team,
and do it in a different way. I would say,
like they have three wins and they all kind of
you know, the defense was was better in those games.
The game was more manageable in those games, and like
the one outlied to me was a little bit the Jets.
I think at least they showed you know, they came
(37:40):
from behind and showed some toughness in that one. The
other two kind of like I know, I know I
can win that game. That's that's the only we've won
games for three years. The other team doesn't score and
we scored just enough. Like I would feel a lot
better about this game, in particular, Big Pitcher if they
moved the ball and scored points. They didn't. They didn't either,
which kept.
Speaker 4 (37:59):
The Beers around for a little while longer than they
should have been. Paul in my opinion, like.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
Yeah, I mean I think the game quarter. To be honest,
I think the game was over and the field goal
at the end of the first half, but you know,
not technically, but I just felt like Chicago just wasn't
moving the ball, and that was because I think the
Patriots had them figured out. I think that they knew
that they could get pressure. I think they knew they
could get All they had to do was stop a
(38:23):
run and get a third down situation and they could
really get after Caleb Williams, and Caleb Williams did not
look good. I mean, you got to say it like
it is. I think he had opportunities to make some plays,
and he looked like Mac Jones.
Speaker 4 (38:38):
He looked like a body language.
Speaker 3 (38:39):
Yeah, I don't really care about that. I know everybody
else hates him, and you know he's a baby and
no one likes him. If if he could make a
play instead of watching the defensive line, then that's different.
If he's gonna just want he looked like Mac Jones
to me, like just watching the defensive line. By the way,
Mac Jones today, quality effort, Yeah, quality effort with a
(39:00):
thirty eight passer rating through FO one hundred and eleven
yards with two picks.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
But it was Belichick's Paul, just just you know, for
those interested, this was the highest yardage I'll put for
the Patriots this year, with three hundred and twenty eight
total yards. It's only the second time they've been over
three hundred yards. The other was against Seattle in overtime
with a three hundred and ten.
Speaker 4 (39:20):
So you know, there, Mike, nice stat but this one
probably is for that's a terrible total twenty eight I
had often.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
I'm just telling you, I'm just putting it in perspective.
Speaker 4 (39:31):
This is Darren from New Brunswick, Canada. And while he
doesn't call you out specifically, Paul, I think this is
right up your.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
Rally, I said to Mike in the break, I'm going
to hear it.
Speaker 4 (39:38):
Do you guys think the win today has more to
do with the Bears level of suck or the Pats
playing well.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
I think the Pats played well today defensively.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
Defensively, yeah, they did. They did. That's I can't take
credit away from that performance. You played that on third down,
you get that many sacks. I mean, you're you're doing something.
Speaker 11 (39:57):
Now.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
You could make an argument that a good team isn't
going to allow a defense to do that to them.
A good offense in Chicago's is not like, what are
we up to? Twenty two straight drives without a touchdown?
I mean it's the most in the NFL, you know.
So it's not like you're the only one shutting him down, right,
you know, Arizona shut him down with a terrible defense
last week. And Arizona's defense is one of the worst
(40:17):
in football. So yeah, I understand where the email is
coming from. I just thought the Patriots played really well
on defense today.
Speaker 4 (40:24):
The TPX hotline is eight five to five Pats five
hundred and we welcome Floyd from Michigan as a first
caller in today. Good afternoon, Floyd, You're first on the
Patriots postgame show presented by DraftKings. Hello Floyd, Hello Floyd.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
Mister Floyd.
Speaker 4 (40:41):
No, Floyd, We're gonna move on. We're going to go
to Sean and Vancouver next Sean. In Vancouver, you're joining
us on the Patriots postgame show presented by DraftKings Man.
Speaker 16 (40:51):
I'm here of a few things, fire Away. Well, congratulations
on the cleric perspective. You were really great on that.
Thank I liked your answer for a underrated non player
in Birchnidarian. Another guy I'd put in that category who
I think is underrated or was underrated was Dick Raybyne. Yeah,
(41:11):
a lot to do with getting Brady on the team. Now,
a couple of things about this game. I think it
was really important that that Poke touchdown for both Poke
and Drake may because Drake was struggling up to that
point in the game and that that kind of lift
him a bit and Poke need something to build on,
(41:32):
So getting that second touchdown was huge. But I'm wondering
where was Born. I didn't even see him on the
field that I know he's dressed. But they didn't play
Born today.
Speaker 4 (41:41):
Yeah, well they didn't play Paul. Why don't you you
know you can.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
Or no, I really can't. There was someone on Twitter
that suggested that they had. They had told Born last
night that he wasn't going to play expect a lot
favorite the young guys, and then they played kJ Osborne.
So that doesn't make any sense to me. That's what
I mean. That's something that was on Twitter today. But
(42:10):
I don't believe he played even a single snap.
Speaker 2 (42:13):
I didn't see him.
Speaker 3 (42:14):
I didn't see him. It's a big head scratcher to me.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
I mean, I I you know, we've been saying he
came off the injury, he was rehabbing, they signed him
to a three year extension. You thought he was going
to be maybe the only guy, if not him and Douglas,
that they really believed in, and now attacking away from
him right as it seemed like last week he had
a few catches, it seemed like maybe he's starting to
finally get up to speed coming off the injury, and
(42:38):
now he doesn't play. It's I don't know. It seems
to me like there's gotta be more to that story,
because it seems like Kendrick Bourne is already in this
team's long term plans and I don't see what he's
done in a few games back off of injury that
would have earned him a spot on the bench in
this game. So it's i'm i'm, i'm, I'm head scratching
my head as to what might have happened with with Kendrick.
Speaker 3 (42:57):
And again if you activated Tae Kwon Thornton and had
k j Osbourne inactive and then said, you know what, Kendrick,
we know you're doing You're doing everything you can, but
we want to see these young guys, these these these rookies,
the first year, second year guys. We want to see
how these guys, how these guys do. Then I would say, okay,
(43:18):
I understand, but Kendrick Bourne doesn't get any snaps and
kJ Osbourne does, Like that doesn't make any sense to me.
Speaker 4 (43:24):
No, No, Phil from Vermont is next to the Patriots
postgame show. Good afternoon, Phil.
Speaker 9 (43:31):
Hey guys, how's it going great?
Speaker 3 (43:32):
How are you? I feel good?
Speaker 9 (43:35):
So I tend to agree with Paul a little bit.
I guess like it probably wasn't Drake's best showing, but
a play that I thought might have been a little
underrated was early in the first quarter. He uh he
rolled out, kind of got fleshed out of the pocket
and like switched to his left hand and just like
threw the ball out of bounds, and like that is
(43:57):
just such an intelligent play.
Speaker 14 (43:59):
For a guy I don't know.
Speaker 9 (44:00):
Yeah, I don't recall.
Speaker 3 (44:01):
Seeing Uh yeah, you know, it's not the first time
he's done it this you know prior, it's not the
first time he's done it this year.
Speaker 8 (44:09):
Yeah, yeah, totally.
Speaker 9 (44:10):
You know, he seems like he just had.
Speaker 3 (44:11):
On the ball away.
Speaker 17 (44:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (44:13):
I think that's a good shout by you, Phil, and
thank you for the phone call. I mean, again, in
a game where he might have been his worst game
so far the year, he still makes enough players to
sit there and go, okay, let's that's something to build on,
and that was ahead he wanted to just stay out
a trouble throw it, I move on to play the
next down.
Speaker 2 (44:32):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I just I have
trouble getting to that point. I mean, they have like
three turnovers. Like I know, we're counting almost turnovers too,
but he had a lot of those in those games too.
I mean, I I don't know. I don't think he
was great, but I don't think this was his worst game.
I don't know if I might stop short of saying
that personally, but okay, the.
Speaker 3 (44:52):
I just I stopped short of like, you know, a
guy got flushed, flushed out of the pocket, rolled out,
got outside the tackles and threw it away and like, no,
I don't think we need to have a parade for him.
Speaker 4 (45:00):
I'm not saying, but it was a heavy play and
I think thats.
Speaker 3 (45:03):
In particular get driven to insanity when the network's gosh,
when Patrick Mahomes throws one with his left hand or
you know, is falling down and throws one out of bounds,
and now you know we're trying to do the same thing.
Speaker 4 (45:19):
Yeah, I would. I think he just made a comment.
I would would take it nothing more than that.
Speaker 3 (45:25):
The announcers did it. Yeah, the announcers said the same thing.
I'm just like, why not just throw it with your
right hand out of bounds? Like why throw it away
like everybody else?
Speaker 4 (45:34):
Finlay and Dundee Scotland. Right. So a lot of credit
has to go to Mayo, the staff and players who
stood up to be counted today, especially on defense, who
didn't allow the Beers to get anything going. It's very
very early, but may just has the it factor, which
feels a little special. It's a team with a poor record,
but I can't help, but be excited about watching the
team develop around you. You're my question about what are
(45:54):
the fans seeking as they're watching this, and so they
count one person there who's excited.
Speaker 2 (45:58):
Sure, there's a lot, I mean, I just look, there's
just not much. I mean, I'm I'm gonna talk about
the rest of the team, like I just am excited now.
At least I'm a little bit more interested to going
to next week because I feel like I came out
of the last couple of games like, yeah, I like Drake,
but nobody else is really playing well or playing hard.
And at least this week gave me a little, you know, belief,
and it'll just a little bit more of Okay, let's
(46:21):
see what the defense has next week. Are you gonna
be able to you know, reprove you know, I don't
expect them to be back as good as they were,
but can you carry some of this momentum over? You've
got another Now you've got a veteran quarterback in Matthew Stafford,
who's you know, really hard to fool. And so we'll
see how they how they carried over. But I just
I have a lot of personal excitement just to watch
the rest of the team. Now, I've always been excited
to watch Drake, but you know, now I want to
(46:42):
see if some of these guys can carry over off
of this good performance that they had today, which.
Speaker 4 (46:45):
Sort of feeds into our next emailer, and this is
Hampton and Charlotte North Carolina aka Drake may Country. Loved
such a dominant win. Wish the offense could have played better.
How does a dominant win like this help the buy
in for a young, unproven coaching staff. Paul me I decided.
Speaker 3 (47:05):
I don't. I haven't seen these these signs of like
a lack of buy in, a lack of intensity. I
see a lack of talent. That's it. I think that
they're playing for Mayo. I think every time they talk,
they talk in going terms about Mayo. I don't think
they need buy in. I think they have bought in
and they're doing everything they can. I think they play hard,
(47:28):
and I think they're doing everything they can execute the
game plan. I think they're short on talent.
Speaker 4 (47:34):
And maybe a little more than short.
Speaker 3 (47:36):
I think that may may is, like the emailer said,
you know, that was exciting. I share that excitement. I
think that he gives you a reason to watch and
even today when I didn't think he played great, there
were a handful of plays that I saw that now
I would say the same thing about the other guy
who's stunk today. He flat out stunk, but he made
(47:58):
four or five throws today. You were like, that was
a tight window, he just put that one into. But
he's like he flat out was awful and the Patriots
really flummexed him the whole day. I would say, I
am looking forward to the team, to watching how the
team tries to build around him and put some pieces
in place, because right now, like I don't feel much
(48:21):
different than I did last week in terms of the
pieces in place. There's just not a lot of help.
Speaker 4 (48:25):
There Damon and Shrewsbury, England. Right, so it's great to
get Maya win. Mike must be gritting and studio at
how his defense did today.
Speaker 3 (48:32):
Mike's happy, for sure. Mike's happy for sure. It's it's
it's great.
Speaker 2 (48:35):
I mean, that's look, that's just that's I think.
Speaker 3 (48:39):
I think some of what.
Speaker 2 (48:40):
Like our disconnect on the team is is I just
don't think they have an identity, you know, they don't
really have that. Their identity is just not being good really.
I mean that's you know, what their identity has been,
and that's what I think has just been missing. And
I don't know if this is going to be their identity,
but for this day, it was nice to just see
a dominant, disruptive defense continually getting after the quarterback from
(49:03):
start to finish. You know, there was no drop off,
there was no you know, they were put a couple
of times in short fields, they came through, you know,
those kind of things. It's us, it's encouraging. I mean,
I you know, I get what Paul's saying. I don't
suddenly think this is an all Star team, but I
do think that this has value and it has you know,
just a little bit of like we talked after week
one when they won the game, and you spent two
(49:24):
months in training camp and now you have a little
bit of you know, just uh, you know what's the
word I'm looking for, you know, belief that I.
Speaker 3 (49:32):
Don't say it didn't have value. I said, I don't
think that they need any buy in. I think they buying.
They're buying in right.
Speaker 4 (49:38):
But when they don't have Mike, when you're talking about
what is their identity, can their identity be that they're plucky,
you know. And however you want to define plucky like
coming back against the Jets, coming up with nine sacks
a day against a woeful Chicago Bear offensive line, but
taking advantage of that not playing perfect, but you know,
(49:59):
doing enough to win on the road and beat a
team when that team is down. I mean, maybe their
identity can be I'm not saying it as yet. Yeah,
maybe it can be plucky.
Speaker 2 (50:08):
I think it goes back to the other buzzwhere we
use a lot around here, which is sustainable and you know,
it's it's today was a day with two backup, backup
tackles and a rookie quarterback and a team that is,
let's face it, since they lost on the Hail Mary
to Washington, they're really you know, up against it. So
they're a unique kind of team that you're catching at
a good time. Can you catch the Rams coming across
(50:28):
the country in the same kind of situation and it's
hard to you know, just drop the formula again. So well,
but I would love it.
Speaker 3 (50:34):
And that's kind of like to you, you know, it's
you know, Matt said, it's like the opponent sometimes as
a co conspirator, and if Chicago do you remember it
was probably like a month ago they were in London
before the Patriots when they played Jacksonville in London. Chicago's
offense looked really good that day and Caleb Williams looked
really good that day. Now, unfortunately for Chicago, they haven't
(50:57):
approached it since they've been bad offensively. Like, forget about
what happened today. That same thing happened last week. The
same thing happened the week before in the Hill Marry game.
They almost won the Hill Marry game, but not because
of offense. And if if it was if I felt like, well, wow,
(51:20):
like that was that was really impressive that they might
be turning a corner. Like I just don't feel like
they turned a corner on defense. I think they played
dominant defense today. I'm not taking anything off of that.
That had nothing to do with That wasn't just about Chicago.
They would dominate. I just need to see it a
little bit. Like you guys always say the demonstrated ability.
I don't just watch a play and say, well that
(51:42):
guy's great like a lot of other people do.
Speaker 4 (51:46):
Like you would like to say some consistent try to
be nice.
Speaker 3 (51:49):
Yeah, I don't be I don't criticize my colleagues anymore
to not be nice. I like it.
Speaker 4 (51:55):
Pats five hundred is a number. William and Drake may
Country your next William on the Patriots postgame show presented by.
Speaker 18 (52:00):
Draft Eody William got to win today.
Speaker 9 (52:04):
Yeah, I do have a question for you guys.
Speaker 6 (52:07):
Does Mayo get.
Speaker 9 (52:08):
Put on the good list for the way that the
team executed at the end of the first half. I thought,
based on the last previous games, this was a big
difference this summer around.
Speaker 4 (52:17):
Hey, William, thank you for bringing that up because on
my good list today and I did sort of. I
just neglected to include it in the avp umbrella. But
he's been getting killed and deservedly so a little bit
for the management or lack thereof at the end of
the half situations. They got the ball back with forty
seconds something seconds left in decent field position and they
(52:38):
stole three there, and that just was a characteristic that
the great Patriots teams used to do all the time.
That was nice to see and I thought they called
a very good end of the half sequence at that.
Speaker 3 (52:48):
Yeah, we had kudos to them. AV was on the gun.
Speaker 4 (52:50):
No, we just didn't mention that and so kudos to
William for bringing that up. That was a good sequence
because they've.
Speaker 3 (52:55):
Been on their own ten, which is what they normally
have done on those situations.
Speaker 17 (53:00):
Right.
Speaker 4 (53:00):
I'm just help just bringing up the situation because I
thought that was a that was good situational football. Always
nice to see. Uh Dan in Virginia writes good a
postgame partiers between the defensive effort and the operation of
the offense at the end of the half. Today you
get another mention. Today the Patriots looked like they actually
knew what they were doing. Watching this game felt like
what it must have been for the other teams fans
(53:21):
watching Patriots games this season. With some of those throws, however,
they should be sliding out into the field wearing just
a shirt and a pair of boxer shorts while old
time rock and roll players over the pa case. The
reference isn't clear. It is to me, Dan, he's talking
about risky business. Paul, I think echoed something that you
said about his recklessness.
Speaker 3 (53:40):
Yeah, I just think he puts the ball in harm's
way too often.
Speaker 2 (53:44):
It's hard to argue with it. I mean it's you know,
you're living by the skin of your teeth on some
of those.
Speaker 3 (53:49):
I mean this, like his play right here is a
reckless ball security play, Like you're taken two unnecessary hits
there for no reason. And you know, I just don't
understand why after already having suffered a concussion, he refuses
to slide.
Speaker 2 (54:05):
I was trying to make the point tutor in the game, Like,
I almost find it more frustrating as a defender if
the guy runs for the first down, does his little
slide pops up, drops the ball and you don't get
a hit on him, you know, like at least if
you're gonna be frustrated by he got out of the pocket,
he picked the first down, but at least we're gonna
make them pay for it.
Speaker 11 (54:22):
You know.
Speaker 2 (54:22):
It's it's a little bit more satisfying than that stupid slide,
pop right up, roll the ball off your finger like
first now you know like that that to me is
demoral is the defense and like this is your you
get maybe an.
Speaker 4 (54:33):
Extra yard at the risk. Yeah, he doesn't have to
prove toughness or anything like that.
Speaker 3 (54:36):
No, No, I want him for I want to be
in the quarterback for ten or fifteen years.
Speaker 4 (54:40):
Kevin England writes, what's up, guys, Paul, I tend to
agree with you ninety nine percent of the time, but
just this one time, let us get delusional, tell everyone
how great this was and enjoy how awesome our team is.
We could be Dippy down his next time when we
get our asking it to us. That's Kevin from England
to Shay. Good note.
Speaker 3 (54:59):
But I thought they were dominant defensive.
Speaker 4 (55:01):
You've been consistent to momament.
Speaker 2 (55:04):
For those wondering, just you know, for fun, the Patriots
are now seventh overall draft pick. If the season were
to end at this moment, because of.
Speaker 4 (55:12):
The flurry of of two win teams. Now, the Patriots
are a three wins right still.
Speaker 3 (55:18):
They still so? Does Carolina's win keep them ahead of
the Patriots?
Speaker 2 (55:22):
Yeah, they're ninth.
Speaker 3 (55:24):
Yeah? Are they plucky? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (55:26):
Just Carolina?
Speaker 3 (55:28):
Are they pain?
Speaker 4 (55:29):
They've won two in a row.
Speaker 3 (55:30):
To play against? Because I would. I would love to
play against Carolina every week. I don't know how your
boy did.
Speaker 4 (55:37):
What would your boy day Boll say about him today?
Speaker 3 (55:39):
I think the Giants are the same. They both stink.
If they win. If they win like four games down the.
Speaker 2 (55:45):
Stretch, I'll say they're pluck.
Speaker 3 (55:46):
I think they stink.
Speaker 4 (55:47):
Alec In Berlin, Germany writes nice strategies, spying Williams and
attacking him with fast regressive tackling. When spotting Schooler playing
close to the line, I thought, oh, he's gonna get Williams.
Cheers Alex and Berlin, who also writes May is the
guy that has a nice bit of strategy today, you know,
probably born out of necessity with nobody else around.
Speaker 3 (56:06):
But it's your draft order, by the way.
Speaker 4 (56:07):
Oh yeah, nice jobs, good jobs.
Speaker 3 (56:11):
So what's a nice spot to be? I'd like to
be right around there. Jason has some experience with that
number one overall pick. Haven't they've gotten it like three times?
Speaker 4 (56:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (56:22):
Yeah, I got it like back to back years.
Speaker 2 (56:24):
It's still weird year. I mean, you guys don't pick
it either. You guys watch more with Hound Hunter and
and Lawrence Right, I'm not Hunter.
Speaker 3 (56:33):
I'm sorry, Yeah, Walker, Trayvon Walker.
Speaker 2 (56:35):
But I mean a lot of like the mocks are like,
you know, a Hunter and but they have him as
a as a cornerback. And it's just hard to draft
a guy and be like, well he can do both things,
but you don't really know what you're getting with him.
Speaker 3 (56:48):
That's so I had someone and it's someone sid a
mailbag question, and I thought it was an interesting point
and interesting way of looking at that. Like, you take it,
and it sort of doubles your opportunity to hit because if.
Speaker 2 (57:03):
He doesn't work out as a well, yeah.
Speaker 3 (57:06):
Like and he feels the need either way. So if
he doesn't work out as a wide receiver, maybe you
move him the corner. If he doesn't work out as
a corner, you move them to wide receiver. And if
you could do both, that's a great problem to have.
You know, I'm not saying for the Patriots. I'm saying
Travis Hunter in general, the draft pick, you know where
where he best fits. Watch a little of him again,
(57:26):
he's unbelievab.
Speaker 4 (57:27):
Yeah, he's gonna win the Heisman, right, Paul.
Speaker 3 (57:30):
I don't know if he'll win the Heisman, but he
is just an incredible player to watch, and he's the
most talented player in college. You know, I don't know
if that what that translates. I'm not a scout. I
don't I don't pretend to tell you how good the
guy will be. But he is incredibly fun to watch
for a team that's not incredibly fun to watch.
Speaker 4 (57:49):
Adam in Colorado Adam and Louisiana and you'll know where
he's going with this. Watching this game, I kept seeing
Boote open and being targeted. He's seemed to make plays
when they came his way. I think he's really starting
to show more consistency throughout the game, showing he can
be more than one big play per game. Would love
to get your opinion on how he played. That's BOUTI
is it Bootie that the announcers, however, you want to
(58:10):
mangled his name every single time they did something. Just
accept I bet you added from Louisiana. Say booty Actually,
how to pronounce it? It's fun to say booty booty,
not hard. He said it's booty booty right, Uh? Mark
and Scheddar headline. Paul is the goat. I just want
(58:31):
to say that Paul's discussed for the college praising me
for breathing sorry, I mean throwing the ball out of
bounds is fantastic.
Speaker 3 (58:37):
Paul.
Speaker 4 (58:37):
This is why you were the goat of PFWPU. Now
get back to the Red Zone. Keep up the great work.
Mark from Jedder. He'll probably have a Red Zone update
for your fairly shortly, so thanks for the note. Mark
all right, as we're closing in is almost an hour
after the game, Matt, why don't we listen in into
the Patriot's locker room where we hear from the head
(58:58):
coach Jerrod Mayle.
Speaker 19 (59:02):
Good afternoon. It's always good to come in here after
a victory. I thought the guys really answered the challenge
that we had all during the week. Talked about being
a physical you know, having a physical Wednesday, and I
think that showed up today really in all three phases.
But offensively, you know, we're able to really deliver those
body blows that we talked about and really staying ahead
(59:22):
of the sticks. You know, the prior week, it's a
lot of second and long situations that really took us
off check and I would say defensively, especially on the
interior piece for the most part, and look, there are
things that correct. I thought the guys played well in
the run game. Defensively, I would say we were able
to get pressure. We're able to get pressure on the quarterback.
We had nine sacks in the game, which is always good.
And I would say the back end did a good
(59:43):
job as far as coverage is concerned. Offensively, kind of
talked about the run game and look, Drake, you know,
still continues to go out there and make plays. He's
gonna make mistakes, but this is part of his evolution,
is part of his growth and development. And then special teams.
You know, it was kind of shaky there at the beginning,
but I would say as we were able to settle down,
it was good. I just want to send a I
(01:00:05):
thought the coordinators. I thought the coordinators did an excellent
job the entire week, not only you know, reiterating the
message that I said in the squad meeting rooms, but
also just putting together a good game plan and knowing
how we have to win football games. And that's still
controlling the line of scrimmage, and kind of talked about that, what.
Speaker 3 (01:00:24):
Did your team do so well defensively?
Speaker 13 (01:00:26):
At one hundred and forty two total yards, only eleven
first downs in the nine sacks, What did.
Speaker 3 (01:00:29):
They do well today?
Speaker 19 (01:00:30):
It starts up front. It starts up front, and I think,
you know, that's what we have to do. We have
to we have to go out there and uh re
establish the line of scrimmage, and we're able to do
that in all.
Speaker 4 (01:00:38):
Three downs, like schoolers down. Seems like he was a
five tech teach is that another.
Speaker 19 (01:00:44):
Bring when he that was that's our that's our long
horn package, our long horn package, and we we've done
things like that before.
Speaker 6 (01:00:50):
And you know, again we talk about next man up.
Speaker 19 (01:00:52):
Now you've got a guy who was primarily a special
team player making contributions is probably what his first sack
ever in his uh, in his career. But uh, he's fast,
he's athletic, and he's a football player. We try not
to put anywhere in the box, and I'm not gonna
put him one.
Speaker 17 (01:01:07):
Uh. Drake asked a VP if he could address the offense.
Speaker 14 (01:01:10):
What do you know about that?
Speaker 6 (01:01:11):
And what does that say about Drake?
Speaker 19 (01:01:13):
Look, Drake has addressed the offense numerous times. I think
this is it goes back to now he's starting to
really take control of of the offense and the team.
I mean, when you go out there and you perform
at a high level, that's the first step. The next
step is to bring others with you, and I think he's, uh,
he's on his way to doing that. Effect Or in
the nun sacks, O coverage was huge. You know, all
(01:01:34):
of those guys in the back end. Again, you know,
we had the young safeties out there and Gonzell continues
to play at a very high level. I would also
say John Jones, you know, he's just one of those
guys you can put him at, you know, as as
a slot corner, put him outside, put him in the
back end. Just a veteran player that again goes in
that box of he's a football player and wherever you ask.
Speaker 6 (01:01:52):
Him to go, he'll go out there and try to perform.
Speaker 7 (01:01:55):
You had how much is your mind that the game
is in John, just stopping.
Speaker 6 (01:02:00):
The matchups in regard to.
Speaker 3 (01:02:03):
How much of this game do you believe would be
if we contains game.
Speaker 19 (01:02:07):
Oh, that was definitely a huge part of it. You know,
we've said that. You know, if you were to take
away just our third down, you know, penalties in our
third down, letting the quarterback out of the pocket, over
the course of the season, we would be much better.
And I would say today, I think they had one
third down conversion, not necessarily sure what it was, and
then one fourth down conversion. And look again, that's that's
the recipe, and we just have to be patient enough
(01:02:28):
to do it on a down after down basis.
Speaker 3 (01:02:30):
About drafting and developing, you got a lot of contributors
from young players today. How much of that is a
reflection of the playing time you know they've received over
the first half of the season.
Speaker 6 (01:02:38):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 19 (01:02:39):
I mean, look, those guys, they work hard, They come
to work every day, they go on the practice field,
and they try to get better. It doesn't always show
up on game day. Fortunately for us to showed up today,
it's a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:02:48):
Of battle for Jalen Polk.
Speaker 4 (01:02:50):
I'm nice to see him get that touchdown and he
got greeted by coaches.
Speaker 6 (01:02:55):
It was great. It was great.
Speaker 19 (01:02:57):
You know, with young players, you never know where that
that inflection point is gonna come. You never know when
that that switch is gonna flip, and hopefully this is
the start of you know, him being a very good
receiver in this league. We never doubted him in the
locker room, and I think that's important. You know, there's
been a lot of outside noise and he's had to
deal with the outside noise. But when it's all said
and done, if you go out and do it on
(01:03:18):
the field, it's not much people can say.
Speaker 20 (01:03:20):
You talked about putting the players out there that give
you the best chance to win. At receiver. You guys
got a lot of receivers today we didn't see Kendrick.
Was that like just practice Kjar and better at practice?
Speaker 3 (01:03:31):
Like what was the thought process selling?
Speaker 19 (01:03:34):
There was a lot that went into that, you know,
anytime we put the the active roster together, I mean
you said it like we thought that that was the
best thing to do for us to give us the
best chance to win. All those guys bring a certain
skill set to the game. We just didn't know who
who was gonna play more, and it just played out
that way. But I will say this, you know, even
(01:03:54):
though Borne didn't play today, it was the first one
smiling when I walked in the locker room. And I've
always appreciated that, you know, just his energy and excitement.
Same thing you know with kJ and the rest of
those guys sometimes they you know, even when they're inactive,
just the excitement, you know, for their teammates. And you know,
we talk about abundance versus scarcity, abundance versus scarcity, and
having that mindset of abundance where we can all eat
(01:04:17):
versus scarcity. If you have that scarcity mindset, you know,
you don't want your teammate to do well because it's
only a certain amount of the pie, And what I
will say, the mindset of this team is that if
we go out there, there are enough players to be
made for all of us.
Speaker 6 (01:04:28):
Who's got to go out and next?
Speaker 19 (01:04:29):
You know, that was a long answer, but I thought
I was gonna get philosophical way you.
Speaker 10 (01:04:35):
Guys ended the first half clock management being able to
execute in that situation.
Speaker 19 (01:04:40):
Yeah, Situational football has definitely been a strength of ours,
you know, especially over the last few weeks, Like you know,
the different situations that show up depending on the clock
and the score and the time out situation. I would say, again,
we were ahead of the game, and it's great to
see when it comes to fruition you've.
Speaker 15 (01:04:56):
Learned something more about your team today or prove something
to everyone else watching you guys.
Speaker 19 (01:05:01):
Yeah, to me, like the only the only people I'm
really concerned with other people in that locker room. And
I've always known that these guys they're gonna give great
effort no matter what. And that's why Wednesday we talk
about changing the page when lose a draw, and I
think that's a good mindset to have. You can't get
too high, I can't get too low. And I would
say we have you know, that's the leadership all the
way to the players, and they've done that. Joey slide
(01:05:25):
a huge, you know, to go out there and be
four for four, to have a new baby be at home,
you know, less than a week old and little Palmer
and I would throw I would throw Jelani Tavan there
as well. Had you know his fiance had a baby
a couple of days ago. I knew. I. I think
I said that right. And it means earth uh and
in that language, but you know, it means a lot.
(01:05:47):
And anytime you know kicker girls out there and kicks.
He's perfect.
Speaker 6 (01:05:50):
There's nothing I can say bad about that. Williams had
struggled the last few games.
Speaker 4 (01:05:55):
What did you see from him today's.
Speaker 7 (01:05:56):
Perfermans versus maybe earlier this season with the team that
he started.
Speaker 14 (01:06:00):
In a Cants in this game.
Speaker 19 (01:06:02):
I still believe that Caleb Williams would be a very
good player in this league. But just like any rookie,
he's gonna go through his ups and downs. It doesn't
matter what position you play, uh, but he'll be a
special player. He's got to stick to Thanks guys.
Speaker 4 (01:06:14):
And there was Gerard Mayo, your head coach after the
Patriots nineteen to three win in Chicago. The viewers and
listeners were listening and watching did Gerard at the time.
In the middle of it, I saw Paul Perlo tap
his nose at one point in time, Mike, and you
saw that as well. Paul is aniche scratch or something
like that.
Speaker 3 (01:06:35):
You remember. During the course of the game today they
had the I think the Army chief judge, head of
the chiefs of staff, I think, and they asked him,
you know, a big Bears fan, you know what Chicago
Bear would you want in a foxhole with you? Cross
Matt Smith off the list of guys you want to
foxhold with you, bringing off airstuff to the Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:06:55):
I didn't. I don't think.
Speaker 3 (01:06:57):
I didn't.
Speaker 4 (01:06:57):
I my apologize if that cut too deep. I didn't
think it.
Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
I do not. I think something is something is a
miss uh, something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
There's something going on with the wide receiver position. That's
not just young guy young guys.
Speaker 11 (01:07:18):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:07:19):
I don't know what it is. I don't know if anybody,
I don't know if anybody did anything wrong. Not suggesting it.
I just it doesn't make sense on the surface that
Bourne doesn't play a snag app and Osborne does and
you want to get young guys more involved. How many
plays did Baker play today offensively?
Speaker 2 (01:07:37):
How many plays him out there?
Speaker 3 (01:07:38):
You know, I hope really was a non factor the whole,
Like you had a touchdown, He had one one play
that he was uncovered and caught a touchdown. Right, did
you see him really any other time you got a
Holden call on a play. I noticed him on that.
He was on the field for plays, but I didn't
really see him as a part of the game. So
(01:08:00):
this whole, like Bourne doesn't play a snap because we
have to get the young deet. There's something more to
the story. I don't know what it is, but yeah,
something's going on. Something's awry.
Speaker 2 (01:08:10):
He just saw the Callahan tweet which said yesterday afternoon,
So that would that would put out of possibility like
somebody went out guest last night or something. I mean,
as the reporting is, if it really was.
Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
Yesterday, I'm not suggesting anything like that.
Speaker 2 (01:08:23):
Right, That's what I'm just backing up the timeline that
the reporting was yesterday afternoon. The decision had been made already.
Speaker 4 (01:08:29):
So and let's also say he dressed like as opposed
to he was not a scratch, he dressed well.
Speaker 2 (01:08:36):
The thing I just don't get is I mean, it
just boils down to who's under contract next year. kJ
Osborne is not. Kendrick Borne signed a three year extension
this year, and you feel like he should just be
coming into his all right, he's getting over the injury.
He should start to be a little bit more productive.
I mean, I saw a couple flashes last week. Yeah,
that's where I thought the trajectory was heading. It just doesn't.
(01:08:57):
I mean, we're having so many conversations right now about
guys who are going to be part of the team
in the future. And according to the offseason, you told
us that this was definitely a guy you wanted as
part of the future, But the actions today suggest that
maybe he isn't.
Speaker 4 (01:09:09):
Eight five five Pats five hundred is the podcast number here.
Let's go to Eric in Chicago where the Patriots beat
the Bears nineteen to three. Good afternoon, Eric.
Speaker 14 (01:09:20):
What's going on guys still? First of all, I want
to say happy birthday to Matt yah Man. Second is
h No, I thought that our team was in trouble
with coaching in that whole thing until I witnessed this game.
(01:09:42):
We're driving back now from that and time out usage
and it was just a mass. So I'm glad that
we're in Chicago's I guess, yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
Well their coach is gonna be gone soon.
Speaker 4 (01:09:58):
And I was I was gonna say, Eric, what was
the mood at Soldiers Field? On on television?
Speaker 3 (01:10:03):
It didn't look good.
Speaker 4 (01:10:05):
Everybody leaving with five minutes left to go in the game.
Booze galore, tell us what the mood is.
Speaker 14 (01:10:11):
Yeah, it was way before five minutes left that people
started leaving. I mean, we're in the nose of these section.
As people were gone pretty much midway third quarter. I
want to say they just kind of gave up on
the team.
Speaker 11 (01:10:25):
It was it was bad.
Speaker 14 (01:10:27):
Uh yeah, but I want to stay positive here. This
is uh.
Speaker 3 (01:10:36):
So go pass.
Speaker 14 (01:10:37):
Yeah. I brought my son to his first edit.
Speaker 3 (01:10:43):
There you go.
Speaker 4 (01:10:43):
That's cool.
Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
You're buried the lead. That's really cool. Absolutely, that's huge.
How old your son?
Speaker 14 (01:10:52):
Almost nine?
Speaker 4 (01:10:53):
That's great prapactation first, that's cool.
Speaker 3 (01:10:56):
Eric, congrats.
Speaker 14 (01:10:57):
I don't have a whole lot more to to give you, guys,
but thanks for being there first time, long time, and
you guys popped popped my radio Cherry whoa.
Speaker 2 (01:11:07):
Boy, whoa whoa whoa?
Speaker 3 (01:11:09):
Well, I like I like those stories of first dance
ending and wins and and stuff like that. So uh yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:11:17):
Yeah, I mean it's just like the way you saw
the crowd, the way you listen to the crowd, the
way you saw the performance. You wait, I know, Paul's
a big body language guy. I actually a the ear
marks of a team that just there cooked mentally, it
looks like, and that can't bode well for the coaching staff.
Speaker 2 (01:11:37):
No, no, for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:11:38):
Now I am a body language guy. I just don't
necessarily blame anybody today, Like there was like visible Front.
Listen when DJ Moore is asked, do you think he's
still the coach? Still has the locker room? And the
answer is I'd like to think so. I mean, I
think you had all you needed to know before the game.
That was like Wednesday, Like there's a lot of like
(01:12:02):
indecision in Chicago. Like that's what you're getting to get
body language from. DJ Moore is a good professional player.
Speaker 4 (01:12:09):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (01:12:09):
He looked like he wanted to assault somebody today. You know,
I think they said that he was disgruntled. At one point.
I joked with me he's got to get gruntled because.
Speaker 2 (01:12:19):
He's just like you didnt get that T shirt. That's
I think Paul coined a T shirt there, get gruntled, gruntled,
you know, like got milk, get gruntle merch.
Speaker 3 (01:12:26):
But did you? I mean, it's rare to see a
guy like that looked just look like you wanted to
fight somebody on every play, and not anybody, by the way,
on the other team. You wanted to fight someone on
his team, or I think specifically old friend Shane Waldron.
I think they I think there was a lot of
frustration with eber Fluis and Waldron in particular, and those
guys are probably not long for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
So it is that the cautionary tale because like I
can't help but jump into someone else's drama. We're so
versed in the Patriots drama and all the what of
what ifs and couldives and shouldives and all the things
that you know you do covering they're not alone, and
then you look at another team and it's like, you know,
they've they've done certain things different than the Patriots. Some
you know, some things are probably similar, but you know,
it just it just goes to show that there's so
(01:13:08):
many different ways to construct a winning team, and there's
no set formulas. Much as you want to check this
box for this kind of player in this box and
this kind of offensive coordinator and this kind of defense,
you know, at the end of the day, there's just
everybody's kind of chasing something that's that's pretty elusive, and
there's no set formula too.
Speaker 3 (01:13:25):
So I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:13:26):
I don't know what the Bears answer is. It's uh,
I've got a lot of talent.
Speaker 3 (01:13:29):
I mean, I thought it was an uninspired hire to
begin with, based on because he was in Seattle, I
believe Waldron. Yeah yeah, and I'm never looking at him.
Speaker 2 (01:13:37):
He was with the Rams brief label. That's what I
was looking at some when you say that, because I
was just like, I know he was with the Patriots brief.
Speaker 3 (01:13:42):
Yeah, it's definitely.
Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
Wait nine, he's one of those guys.
Speaker 3 (01:13:45):
You're right, he's so.
Speaker 2 (01:13:47):
BBNN for a little while.
Speaker 20 (01:13:48):
Oh, b B and N.
Speaker 3 (01:13:49):
Yeah, and he was he was here.
Speaker 2 (01:13:52):
Yeah eight and nine.
Speaker 3 (01:13:54):
Oh he was here.
Speaker 2 (01:13:56):
Wasn't that? That's all?
Speaker 3 (01:13:57):
I thought? It was a quality control guy before. Oh yeah, no,
he never had. He might have been wide receivers coach
one year.
Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
Nothing's listed here. Yeah, he's five to seven with Notre
Dame as a grad assistant then too. Yeah, he went
with Charlie QC Control and tight ends, nothing less tight ends.
Speaker 3 (01:14:12):
He was tight end tight ends.
Speaker 4 (01:14:13):
So he four with Charlie because again quality control or
intern or something.
Speaker 2 (01:14:18):
Like that two thousand nine year where they realized in
twenty ten we got to remake our whole sit and
real completely and draft you guys. But that's what I was,
you know, just you know, my head looking at these things,
playing the comparison game, where you know, in twenty sixteen
he's with Washington, so I assume that's part of the
Kyle Shan anything.
Speaker 3 (01:14:31):
He goes there, he had the Rams passed Sean mccordinator.
Speaker 2 (01:14:34):
His pants are slowly getting tighter with you stop and
now here he is and the Bears and they're like,
this guy's terrible. We gotta get someone else.
Speaker 4 (01:14:41):
Eight five five Pats five hundred the number Kyle and
Arizona where the Cardinals are beating the Jets right now,
fourteen to three. Kyle, you're next to the Patriots post
game show where the Patriots were nineteen to three winners
in Chicago to day.
Speaker 3 (01:14:51):
Hello, Kyle, it's fourteen to six and my red zone
roots would not allow me to my apologize. H Kyle,
Oh going once, going twice? No, Kyle, that means we'll
go to Pat Nagawam next good Win today, Pat correct
finger on the button, Matt never know what could happened here?
(01:15:12):
Come on, Hey, fine guys, Okay, what's going on?
Speaker 2 (01:15:16):
It's going on.
Speaker 21 (01:15:17):
I love to win. It was awesome, and PAULI, I'm
with you too, man. I think Drake's gotta he's got
to learn how to slide, you know. And some of
the boneheaded plays like that first pick was terrible, and yeah,
that pass hunter Henry in the end zone should have
been intercepted. But then I remind myself, like he's still
a rookie. Y yep, you know, hopefully a lot of
this stuff gets coached out of him. But you know,
(01:15:39):
even though he played, he didn't have his best game.
I'll take it. I'll take it.
Speaker 3 (01:15:43):
I would agree Pat, And just let me just say it,
like I understand it was his fifth start, Like I'm
not grading him on a curve. I'm not grading him
on his fifth start, So I'm great. I'm great him,
like I grade any other NFL quarterback, like I wouldn't say, well,
you know, poor Caleb Williams today he's dealing with all
those backup le No, he was terrible. Yeah, he had
he had to deal with pressure, and he didn't deal
(01:16:04):
with it, like stop looking at them and look at
your receivers and throw the ball sometimes, don't get sacked
nine times. That's you know, that's what you know. Maybe
three years from now, the same kind of situation. Caleb
Williams handles much better. But today he was terrible. And
I don't think Matt, I don't think May was terrible.
Speaker 4 (01:16:22):
He all played Williams today, right, yeah, yeah, absolutely, definitely,
absolutely hell.
Speaker 21 (01:16:28):
He's you know, he didn't start out very.
Speaker 3 (01:16:30):
He didn't start out well and he didn't finish well.
He got hot in the middle of the second quarter,
and those two drives at the end of the half,
that was the difference in the game, right, the touchdown drive.
He was really good on that drive, and then really
they got the field goal with Marcus Jones's punt return.
Those two drives, those those were I thought Mike and
(01:16:50):
I went up and did a chin wag, had half
and a chin wag. Excuse me, just outside. I would
try to capture the spirit of the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
Sometimes we answer questions, but not this.
Speaker 4 (01:17:02):
You get any grub At halftime, they brought it down
to him. Nobody just wondered if he had any fresh grub.
Speaker 3 (01:17:08):
No fresh grub.
Speaker 2 (01:17:09):
Okay, I had two cheros though, and maybe a thing.
Speaker 3 (01:17:14):
So I say, chin wag, isn't any grub, any fresh grub?
Just always check it.
Speaker 4 (01:17:19):
On the spread. Speaking of Drake may Matt Morrell, let's
go back inside the Patriots podium in locker room, and
let's listen to the Patriots quarterback after winning his first
NFL game.
Speaker 3 (01:17:30):
Clap it up for the defense, and clap it up.
Speaker 6 (01:17:32):
Clap it up somebody else.
Speaker 3 (01:17:33):
Clap up.
Speaker 10 (01:17:34):
There we go, aprecife, there we go.
Speaker 3 (01:17:36):
Let's start with that defense. What was it like to
watch them on a daylight?
Speaker 10 (01:17:40):
Man's good field sitting over there. You know his offense
as a quarterback, that type of different performance. You know,
I feel like you know all the eleven out there
at the time, but I know fifteen to twenty played.
Speaker 6 (01:17:49):
Just crush them.
Speaker 3 (01:17:50):
Crush them.
Speaker 6 (01:17:50):
Then you'll practice this week.
Speaker 17 (01:17:51):
Man.
Speaker 10 (01:17:52):
It's kind of a good taste of you know what
looks like you want it looked like for me in
training camp, and they get after, they get after. You
mix up, mix up show, mixed up coverage, mix up
blitz packages. It's pretty cool to watch and it's good
to the other side of the ball. So I got
to make some better decisions and keep those guys in
good feel position.
Speaker 4 (01:18:09):
Seemed like you settled down. You guys have some new
packages up. There's some bubble screen looks and get alignment up.
What helps you get to flow the game there, especially
right before the end of the half and as you
guys you know added the game.
Speaker 6 (01:18:19):
Or fourth of courred.
Speaker 10 (01:18:19):
Yeah, I think be able run the football only time,
be able to run the football first down, you know,
I felt that was the big thing, you know today,
credit to those guys up front and you our guys,
they played their butts off and run run blocking in
pass pro. I think, be able to run the football
scene downs and you know, some big yards on first
downs kind of helps us throughout the way. And then
down there we had a couple of drives, you know
that we got down there and got down in the
red zone, and you know, the Bears were one of
(01:18:39):
the best in your red zone defenses in the League.
So I think there's some some throws that I like
to have back. And obviously that one, you know, first interception,
it's just a bad decision, so trying to throw it
away and got to throw it away farther. But at
the end of the day, on the defense, you know,
once foot football game, we did just enough.
Speaker 17 (01:18:55):
Like the broadcast said that you asked a VP if
you could address the offense because you were a little
bit frustrated with what you were seeing in practice. What
exactly were you seeing that made you compelled to say something?
Speaker 10 (01:19:07):
Yeah, I think just just little things. I think just
taking you know, the next step is me being the
quarterback and you know them in the offensive meeting room
of you know, these little things that are adding up
and hurting us in practice that are leading the game day.
I think, you know last week I mentioned we had
you know, second and third down and the two minute
drill that we ran it and we couldn't pick up
one yard. You know, little things like that. Just a
little detailed and focus, and I think sometimes getting the
(01:19:27):
practice mode where you're just running plays and I really
tuned in and trying to execute, you know, specific plays,
trying to just get into groove. Hey, we're just running
plays out here just for for nothing and really trying
to challenge those guys and challenge myself to take each
play and you'll know that, you know, when the game
comes to this play is called you know it matters.
You know, there's so many times, you know, throughout the
you know the game, you see how much that play
can impact the turnout of the game. So I was
(01:19:48):
just trying to get through to them and probably fullding
some words trying to do it. But I think those
guys respected it.
Speaker 20 (01:19:56):
Sean, just what did you see on that play and
just the process of getting up there spiking game.
Speaker 10 (01:20:01):
Yeah, player are two men, you know, so we practice
you know, credit to coach Mayo and and you know
offensive guys and and the staff. We we we practice
those like like nobody's business. We practice them every week,
you know, with big plays and a chunk play and
getting up there and spike it. And I think we
even practiced that, you know, on our walkthrough yesterday morning.
I think that you almost like the same exact thing
where you know, for we have no time bouts, it's
(01:20:21):
either you know, rust the field goal team on one.
If we could have had time for that, so no timeouts,
we had to clock it and you end up working.
So I think we looked at that same play on
film kind of back side dig and just shows you know,
what you attribute to these coaches getting prepared and just
making them.
Speaker 1 (01:20:35):
Throw after that interception early come back into the half,
have the have a couple of series that you guys.
Speaker 10 (01:20:42):
Is being a competitor and I think, you know, just
knowing you'll have confidence myself, you know, I know that's
you know, not my style of football. Turning football over
like that and bless you and just growing up and
playing different sports and having older brothers and being able
to bounce back and getting dunked done on a mini
hoop and having to you know, come back here and
bounce back, you know, from older brothers. So whether it's
that or just you know, face adversity throughout the season,
(01:21:04):
I think more and more, you know times you know,
and everything's gonna go right and everything's gonna go perfect,
and I think you saw that from the offense today.
But being able to bounce back and do what we
need to do with you know, DEFENSI performs like that.
Speaker 20 (01:21:15):
How much you want to earn everyone's respect as a
rookie coming.
Speaker 2 (01:21:20):
So when you ask Alex to to talk to the team.
Speaker 20 (01:21:23):
Like, how do you measure that out without you know,
you want them to Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:21:27):
I think that's huge, no doubt, that's what I think.
That's something you got to balance getting to know these
guys and being genuine with them and you know, going
you know, creating your fellowships, sitting with different people, you know,
where we're getting something to eat or you know, playing
different guys and you know, kind of reaching out to
different guys, trying to get on a personal level instead
of just hey and teammates, we're friends that we come
at work and go home, you know, text them after,
(01:21:47):
send them a video, Hey in this look, you know
we're watching film at home. A cool things like that
I think can go a long way. And uh, like
I said, trying to get a you know, each guy
on a personal level can kind of didn't you know
you feel like, oh okay, that's you know, I know
Drake and he cares about me, and that's how I
approaching me.
Speaker 8 (01:22:04):
When he feeds the team this week.
Speaker 10 (01:22:07):
I think maybe an after Wednesday's practice, Yeah, first pressure
of the week, I think, Uh, I think I fum
a little to snap. I think we didn't pick up
you know, protection that we've been you know, trying to
pick up. I think, you know, they had some little,
you know, mental errors that I think, you know, I
really started with myself that I think, uh ended up
(01:22:28):
that we didn't show today and that that's with town.
Speaker 4 (01:22:33):
And the second quarter complete the past to pop, who's
kind of been you know.
Speaker 10 (01:22:37):
Yeah, that's pretty cool. You know, first round, you'll pick
a second round picking. I think JP is he's finding it.
I think, uh, there's some times where I think I
had him some other times in the game, and I
think he's he's gonna be a great player and looking
forward to hoping that that touchdown to do some confidence
and he's gonna make a lot of players for us.
So thank you.
Speaker 4 (01:22:57):
A polite and somewhat humorous Drake May with a little
pep in his step. I think you could tell that
they won the game and bless you.
Speaker 2 (01:23:05):
Yeah, sneezing the people. It's great. Love Drake.
Speaker 3 (01:23:10):
I love the Drake.
Speaker 4 (01:23:13):
I didn't get that reference until I.
Speaker 3 (01:23:14):
Keep saying the same thing, like he's just such a
nice kid. Yeah, yeah, I know it sounds so like condescending,
and I don't mean it to sound that, but he
just seems like such a nice kid. Is someone you
want to root for?
Speaker 4 (01:23:25):
Yeah, polite, as we said, uh a j in the
Bay Area rights, I agree is lacking, but I was
encouraged by certain players we still aren't sure about. Bootie Hooper,
Hasty and others had strong performances showing even more progress
like Douglas. I'm glad Polk got that touchdown catch. It
might have been his only catch, but he needed that
(01:23:45):
confidence boost. Even though we don't think any of them
is a dominant force, I'm hoping that they can be
very solid, complimentary pieces once we get a big time
wide receiver down the line. Marcus Jones is having one
to two really good returns per game. I think you're right,
Paul about what you've been saying about him. As for May,
his being the best quarterback we've had since Brady is
visibly undeniable. A lot to there, a lot from AJ
(01:24:09):
There a lot of observations good for him. Eight five
five pats five hundred is a number. Brad from Oh
Hi Oh is next on the show. Brad, You're next
on The Patriot's Postgame Show, presented by DraftKings.
Speaker 18 (01:24:20):
Hello, Hi, I'm going today.
Speaker 3 (01:24:23):
Great? How are you bad?
Speaker 18 (01:24:24):
Pretty good? And the emailer was spot on with that email. Yes,
that was really good. And so I was thinking, guys,
where we're going to end up falling in the draft?
A Coaston Loveland might be a an underrated draft pick.
(01:24:47):
I mean, I think he'll fit our offense really really well,
and I think we're gonna win a few more games.
And you know, I don't. I don't think we're going
to get a high draft pick like we're thinking if
we start playing the way obviously we did today. So
that being said, what do you guys think about him
(01:25:08):
in particular? And you know, if we don't get the
Travis Hunter and uh, you know, and we slide back
a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:25:16):
Just that's oh, thank you, thank you, Brad.
Speaker 3 (01:25:19):
What was the name?
Speaker 2 (01:25:19):
I didn't I didn't catch what the name?
Speaker 17 (01:25:20):
One?
Speaker 2 (01:25:21):
You say, A loved one.
Speaker 4 (01:25:22):
I vowed I was not starting my draft prep until December. Mike.
Speaker 2 (01:25:26):
I should have. I should have jumped in and asked him.
I apologize for not catching who that was, and only
so much because I don't really watch a ton of it.
I have actually jumped into a little bit, but I mean, look,
I think those those left tackles are certainly appealing between
Banks and you know, I know Will Campbell and kind
of falling down the draft list a little bit here
as the season's gone on. But I just think there's
(01:25:47):
a sweet spot to it. And you know, nothing against
Travis Hunter. I mean, as Paul said, I mean, he's
such a dynamic, but he's just he's got a question
of like, you know, how do you how do you
work it all out?
Speaker 4 (01:25:55):
How about one hundred and seventy pounds?
Speaker 2 (01:25:57):
Yeah, that's the kid pick right, And then the kid
from uh, you know McMillan from Arizona, who's big, and
I mean he has kind of the prototypical size, so
you know, just on paper, without getting too much into
it yet, that's a little bit more appealing to me.
Just like he's gonna be a wide receiver, he's gonna
be big. He's what you need. But I think really
you got some decisions to make, especially if you're in
(01:26:18):
that that range. I think you need a lot, and
I think it's easier to trade down and pick up
some extra picks if you want it, if you're in
that five six seven kind of area and go down
into the teens and then maybe you know, to try
to get three or four to one hundred picks. I mean,
I think that's what this team needs. And there's a
number of different holes, and I think the edge position
is one that people need to consider two as possible.
Speaker 3 (01:26:40):
I think anything and everything is on the board. The
Travis Antra thing, Matt is big on the size. He's
listed at six one five, so not one hundred and
seventy pounds. They all lie about okay, but not by
fifteen pounds.
Speaker 4 (01:26:53):
And I would say, here's a draft, rock draft when
you have a on the screen for those watching it home,
when you have.
Speaker 3 (01:27:01):
An elite athlete like that, like if he's one hundred
and eighty five as opposed to two zero five, Like
I'm not.
Speaker 2 (01:27:09):
Really he's electric and he just gets away from people.
I mean, what's Antonio Brown like five ten to one eight?
Speaker 3 (01:27:14):
Now there's got you know, like Devonte Smith was like
one sixty something's coming out right, but he's crazy athletic
and he's been really good. Yeah, Like there's an electric
quality to those guys that I think sort of overrides
the size. I understand what say Thattt's not saying anything
that's like, well, why would you be of course you'd
be concerning is he durable enough? Is he gonna be
(01:27:36):
able to hold up to the rigors of the NFL.
Matt's like concern with the size of a guy like
Travis Hunter is valid. I just like number one, Yeah,
impatize it were And that's what And that's where I
sort of separate from like, I don't feel better about
blowing my number five overall pick because he was too
small and couldn't hold up. Then I would if I
blow that number one overall pick. But to me, if
(01:27:59):
the guy can play, he can play. Now, I don't know.
Like again I said about a half hour ago, I'm
not an NFL scout. I'm not here to tell you
Matt Smith's ability is going to translate to the NFL.
It's a hard thing. It's a hard thing to to
sort of say, well, he's playing in the Big twelve
and that's going to hold up, and that's going to translate.
(01:28:20):
I feel like he's a really, really good player. I'm
not sure that he'd be my first option for the
for the first round pick, however, if the ackles are
not worthy of top ten picks or don't force it
or the quarterbacks. I just think they have they have
to go with the best player available, and they have
(01:28:41):
the luxury of not having to take a quarterback, so
they should be able to find somebody that can play,
right Yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:28:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:28:50):
And if it's Travis Hunter, great, If it's you know,
uh t Ma Mac great. I don't know how to
pronounce his first name, McMillan, Tatriola, something like that, but
he's he's a really good player too. Like, I'm not
opposed to taking a wide receiver and in the top
ten if the guy's worth it, right, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I think Neighbors has proven to be worthy of the
(01:29:10):
top ten pick. Marvin Harrison just caught a touchdown red
zone check in. I think he's been, you know, kind
of underwhelming so far based on the bill of goods.
Speaker 4 (01:29:20):
Were sold six TD receptions, which leads all rookies to
this point in time. And yeah, but.
Speaker 3 (01:29:25):
He doesn't have a lot of production. I mean, he
has touchdowns, but not I'm not dismissing the touchdown, but
like Jalen Polk has too, he's probably the Patriots leading
touchdown get it right, even productive?
Speaker 4 (01:29:36):
Right? One more little draft uh ask for me, the
kid from Miami who plays quarterback?
Speaker 3 (01:29:42):
Is he any good cam Wood? Good player? Good player?
Speaker 4 (01:29:46):
Because I think the fact that there's no franchise quarterback
is going to help is going to hurt whoever? Is
it really the top of the draft, and might that
might even trickle down a little bit because when that
guy's there, you might be able to auction that thing
off and that affects the other positions. If he's not there,
and it's just all right, well, what are we going
to pick from? Wide receiver, offensive lineman, edge rusher, outstanding
(01:30:09):
defensive back. Then I just wonder how much competition and
trade action can you get even if you're five six
seven eight. Yeah, Like somebody's gonna have to fall in
love with somebody to want to jump to get to
that position.
Speaker 2 (01:30:22):
Yeah, And that's why I think, like that's kind of
appealing to me in that area because we're picks, yeah,
and you're gonna get somebody that they like is gonna
kind of fall you know that There's it seems like
there's a lot of different directions you could go with
the draft right now, and of course it's early and
these things will tend to settle down a little bit,
but right now it just seems like there's no clear
like this guy, this guy, this like it's all over
(01:30:42):
the map right now with starting with usually Hunter going
first overall, which again like people just kind of throwing
him to the Patriots when they were in that spot,
which it's just it's a hard pick, like there's some
concern he's you know what if he really is just
a better cornerback, would you still take him first over off?
You're the Patriots and you feel.
Speaker 3 (01:30:59):
Like he's Oh if I thought he was that good.
Speaker 2 (01:31:01):
Like a cornerback first overall, yeah, why not? Because you
don't because you need a lot more and you'd rather go.
Speaker 3 (01:31:06):
Oh yeah, yeah. No, No, I'm not talking about for the Patriots.
I mean Travis Hunter, Yeah, as the number one overall pick.
If you think he's that good as a cornerback, then.
Speaker 4 (01:31:14):
When my last time a wide receiver went one, and
don't tell me it's Friar Calvin Calvin Johnson, did he
go one?
Speaker 3 (01:31:22):
I don't think he was two. But yeah, I don't
have that.
Speaker 4 (01:31:27):
Sadly, of course I go to Irving Friar in nineteen
eighty four, or where my memory goes. While Paul's looking
Chad in Atlanta writes an encouraging win to say, the
most offensive play calling is lacking aggressiveness. After we were
pumping up a VP.
Speaker 3 (01:31:41):
I just don't understand what that guy can do when.
Speaker 4 (01:31:43):
It comes to sequencing at times. That's what Chad is saying,
missing the mark when it comes to sequencing. Maybe drop
more quarterback run plays. I don't think that that's happening.
And bootlegs were the best player on your team. That's
Drake Vanilla kick may by the way, since chin Atlanta,
I think the coaching staff, and I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:31:58):
Specifically Drake may thing what they.
Speaker 4 (01:32:02):
Want to see more quarterback running? Vanilla what Vanilla vic?
Vanilla vic? Yeah, I don't. I don't see that. But
I don't think quarterback running. I don't think design runs
is in the cards for Drake may as long as
Gerard Mayo's got any kind of a saying, and that
doesn't seem like that's going to be part of the playbook.
Speaker 2 (01:32:20):
I just think specific areas like red zone, you know,
or goal line, goal line, you know, where he's not
going to get hit. Those are those are the spots
to do it. But I think we're already seeing him
carry the ball again hit more than any of.
Speaker 3 (01:32:31):
Us, way more than I want.
Speaker 4 (01:32:32):
Yep, Tyler from Fresno, California, You're next in the Patriots
postgame show presented by DraftKings.
Speaker 22 (01:32:37):
Hello, Tyler, Well, hey, thank you guys for taking my call.
Speaker 2 (01:32:42):
Hey to You're welcome, all right.
Speaker 22 (01:32:45):
I just wanted to point out a little bit of
something with Drake May like he has a great demeanor,
that young man.
Speaker 3 (01:32:51):
I agree. I think he's very.
Speaker 22 (01:32:54):
Likely very likable, you know what I mean, Like very
nice kid and stuff. That's all I wanted to point out, guys,
first time caller, you know, that's that's all.
Speaker 3 (01:33:04):
I really wonderful. Yeah, I'm with you, Tyler.
Speaker 4 (01:33:06):
Tyler, thanks for the phone call there, Tyler, and I
think you get no disagreement here. I think all of
us in the little bit that we've had a chance
to be around him or see him and his He's humble,
he's self deprecating, he gives credit where credit is due.
Speaker 3 (01:33:23):
Did the entire media.
Speaker 4 (01:33:24):
Course stand up and clap when he asked for the
defensive follows?
Speaker 2 (01:33:27):
And only just a backroad I didn't see anybody high
five nineteen ninety six.
Speaker 3 (01:33:32):
That's the first the last time a wide receiver was.
Speaker 4 (01:33:37):
Shown there it is I agree then it was irving
after that, I'm looking, yes.
Speaker 2 (01:33:43):
No, I think being being thrust into it a little
bit too. Like this, you know this standing up in
front of the team on Wednesday, I mean that happens
as probably simultaneously on the radio, I was doing a
rant about.
Speaker 3 (01:33:55):
Like somebody's got to step up and out this kid.
Speaker 4 (01:33:57):
He's get has to do it all.
Speaker 2 (01:33:58):
Himself, you know, and to hear now that he's also
taking the ownership, just to step up in front of him,
I just think it's a good sign for the team.
I mean, I don't know if he's like entirely ideally
you'd like that, you want the rookie, but at the
same time, like now's the time, like this is the guy.
Let's get behind him. He's already taking ownership of the team.
And I think that that could only, you know, do
(01:34:20):
real help to him as he wins the team.
Speaker 18 (01:34:22):
All.
Speaker 2 (01:34:22):
Not that I think he needs to win the team over.
I think they they probably are already behind this kid.
But it's just it's it's good. You're just you're getting
rid of all the prologue and you know, like the
oh he's gonna sit all year and we're gonna have
to like he's in it. He's leading the team, he's
taking responsibility, he's taking ownership. And I think it's a
great sign.
Speaker 4 (01:34:37):
Don't you think he sees the landscape, Mike Like he's
standing back there and he goes, Okay, let's see what
we got here. We don't have a ton you know,
right wrong or indifferent. I'm gonna be the guy here,
so let's start doing some of those things to try
to make sure that there's no doubt about it. And
here's my standard, and I want everybody else to death
(01:34:58):
perf me on that standard account. And I'm not gonna
take anything less than that. And I'm just gonna let
you know that right here in front of everybody.
Speaker 2 (01:35:04):
Yeah, I mean, it's not gonna have the same weight
obviously of you know, a Tom Brady being that kind
of guy. But that's what you want the quarterback to be.
That's what you want the power structure of your team
to be. Your quarterback is one of your best players.
They're the guy that sets the tone. They're the guy
that demands everything out of the rest of the team.
And you know, for Drake May to be a twenty
two year old kid in his fifth start to be
able to take some of that on already.
Speaker 3 (01:35:25):
I think it's it's a good thing.
Speaker 4 (01:35:26):
Patriots beat the Bears today in Chicago nineteen to three.
Let's look ahead, head. We've got a little time left
to look ahead before as because I think we've done
a pretty good job of looking at this game.
Speaker 3 (01:35:37):
On Monday, especially Mike, the.
Speaker 4 (01:35:39):
Los Angeles Rams are hosting the Miami Dolphins, so it'll
be a short week.
Speaker 3 (01:35:45):
Paul.
Speaker 4 (01:35:45):
I don't know if you know this or not, but
it's the dreaded West Coast team coming east for an
East Coast one o'clock game. I know that that's always
a terrible proposition because that stat has now gone ridiculously
in the West Coast team's favor. But that's not an
easy matchup, and Sean McVay and Matt Stafford, that'll be
a challenge for the New England Patriots, no question.
Speaker 2 (01:36:07):
I mean, I mean, I'll let Paul do a rant
about Matthew Stafford, but you know, you got to have
all the respect on the world for that guy, the
way he's just been such a warrior for that team.
He's getting his guys back now, and I think they're
doing a pretty good job of like kind of rebuilding
on the fly. They got a couple of rookies from
Florida State playing up front on defense for them, so
I mean obviously a turnover from the team they had
and who they you know, had up front of Aaron Donald,
(01:36:29):
I mean that was you know, the center. So they're
a good, hungry, young team. I think everyone will agree
they're well coached, and they've got a good scheme, and
I think it's a good challenge on the heels of
this Bears one where you feel like you kind of
pants the rookie team that was a rookie quarterback that
was under manned along their line.
Speaker 3 (01:36:46):
That's great.
Speaker 2 (01:36:47):
But now you've got a really good Rams team that's
really well run that's probably going to give this Patriots
team everything that can handle Paul.
Speaker 4 (01:36:52):
For many years, opposing teams would come in here or
host the Patriots and Bill Belichick and they would pay
homage to Bill's the best, and you've done it all,
Bill's the best, and they would bow down. Now that
Bill's not in the league this year, is McVeigh getting
a little bit of that same treatment that everybody is
the respect factor. Is he looked at as the best
(01:37:14):
in the league today.
Speaker 3 (01:37:14):
I don't think he's looked at like like Bill.
Speaker 4 (01:37:17):
I'm not saying that of current guys that are coaching.
Speaker 3 (01:37:22):
He's on the list. Yeah, he's certainly, you know, I
would say Andy Reid probably took over the Bill pedestal.
But you know, Shanahan and McVeigh, Harbaugh, those guys I
think get a lot of respect. Sure, I think a
lot of people think a lot of Sean.
Speaker 4 (01:37:36):
McVay and you know, and he's had a ton of
people come off of his tree.
Speaker 3 (01:37:41):
Right, Yes, I mean, and Mike brings up one that
hasn't really panned out, Shane Walter.
Speaker 20 (01:37:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:37:48):
Yeah, but yeah, I think that that m that McVeigh,
Shanahan tree has borne a lot of positive fruit, right,
these guys around the league that have have had some success,
I think.
Speaker 4 (01:38:01):
I mean, I just is Raheem Morris McVeigh guy, No,
he he went to the Rams.
Speaker 3 (01:38:09):
But he was a defensive.
Speaker 2 (01:38:10):
Guy, isn't he like a Tampa guy? Cut his teeth there.
Speaker 3 (01:38:15):
Yeah, he went to the Rams. I don't know, like
I don't know, but he's a defensive guy. And McVeigh
doesn't have defensive guys in his tree. He famously well,
he famously hired Wade Phillips to run the defense when
he first got the Smart move.
Speaker 4 (01:38:33):
Right, smart move. All right, now that we know that
the Rams are coming here next week, what leftovers? Mike?
Do you have today's nineteen to three win over the Bears.
Speaker 2 (01:38:41):
Ah, you know, I just I give credit to the defense,
of course. I mean, I think that's the headline for this,
and in some ways, I think that was really the
headline of the game. And May has kind of continued
to be what May has been. He makes it, has
his moments, He has some hairy moments you know, how
to turn over again.
Speaker 3 (01:38:59):
But I think that the defense can.
Speaker 2 (01:39:00):
Continue to play at a reasonable level and the running
game can continue to build a little bit like maybe
there were some sparks today. I got to see it
to believe it. One game in an offshoot, in a
game against Chicago, hard to say, well, that's it, this
is who.
Speaker 3 (01:39:12):
The Patriots are.
Speaker 2 (01:39:13):
We've seen too much from this team over the last
couple of months to believe that to be true. But
I do think that it at least proved to us
that they're capable of this, and you know, but now
it's like, all right, can you stack it against a
pretty good team, a RAMS team that's going to be
probably be you know, assuming they win this game, they're
going to be fighting for a playoff spot there in
the mix very much. So it's gonna be a big,
big challenge, especially with the veteran quarters.
Speaker 3 (01:39:33):
So either way, it's a tough spot because the Rams
are gonna need it. I mean, win or lose, they're
gonna need it. And it is funny though, like they
play well defensively and it's okay, so now you know
they can do that, and they run the ball well,
and they're like, well, I need to see like you know,
Mike and I look come at it from a different way,
Like to me, the running game today in the defense
(01:39:55):
today are in very similar categories for me, like I
need to see that, you know, I need to see
them be able to Okay, contain Karen Williams next week,
contain Pooka Nkua and Cooper Cup. Yeah, you know it's
gonna be a better offensive line. Yeah, I don't know
about that because I know they've had a lot of
injuries up front too, and Stafford has struggled as a
(01:40:18):
result of it at times. But I do think they've
gotten some of those guys back. Yes, where Chicago lost
a lot of those guys coming into this game. That
might be an area that the Rams are a little
bit better, and the Rams defense is totally young and
sort of starting, it might be a better opportunity for
Drake May yeah to maybe getting a shootout next week.
Speaker 2 (01:40:36):
Yeah, I think the interesting thing for me too is
the Rams receivers. You know, Cup and Nakua proven guys.
I mean, I know Cup's getting up there a little bit,
but as much as you want to look at Chicago's
and still Roma Dunesa's a rookie. He hasn't quite found
a strike yet.
Speaker 3 (01:40:51):
Bad drop today.
Speaker 2 (01:40:52):
It seems like DJ Moore is not the happiest of guys.
He needs to get gruntled. Keenan Allen maybe maybe Keenan
Allen a little bit little bit, Cooper Cup a little
bit washed, getting washed. So yeah, it's and again like
I want to caution with Cup, like I know that
he's not quite the same guy he once was, But
at the same time, I feel like these are two
receivers that are a little bit closer to their prime
a little bit more productive. I think they're going to
(01:41:13):
be a little bit more of a challenge for the
Patriots secondary and.
Speaker 4 (01:41:16):
That division race that the Rams are in. Arizona's five
and four and beating the Jets right now. I think
San Francisco went to five and four with their win
at the Buzzer and they beat Tip of Bay today.
The Rams are looking to go five and four. That's
a pretty decent division. I don't know where the Sea
Puppies are, but they're not that far behind, are they. Yeah, so, I.
Speaker 3 (01:41:34):
Mean's a bunch of mediocre teams.
Speaker 4 (01:41:36):
Well, I'm just saying it's a good race though.
Speaker 3 (01:41:37):
All that's why I say the Rams are gonna need
Like that's a big game for the Rams next week.
I mean, it's regardless of what happens tomorrow night, which
is unfortunate like you'd like to be. Yeah, well, yeah,
they got a three game lead. Maybe they'll, you know,
look past, but that can't afford to look past because
they got off to such a bad start with all
those injuries.
Speaker 4 (01:41:56):
Right well, repeating the phrase demonstrated ability, I do think
that this game gives them a little bounce in their step.
Can they do it against another team. That's the challenge
that the coaching staff is gonna have to say, you
need to start stacking some of these. It can't just
be one hit wonders. You know, where you play well
and then you're lousy the next two weeks or something
(01:42:17):
like that. It's can we develop some consistency in their play.
That's what the coaching staff's got to be really harping
on this.
Speaker 2 (01:42:24):
Week and a little bit come home, you know, win
a home game again, you know, like, come come home.
You've been on the road for a couple of weeks.
And I mean, look, they they want a game. They
lost in overtime, they won a game. I mean, it
is what it is. We know in the details of
that that it's not like, hey, you know, we could
be three and oh right now. But at the same time,
it's are they finding a little something?
Speaker 3 (01:42:41):
Are you know? This is what we wanted?
Speaker 2 (01:42:43):
We wanted better football as the as the As the
year progresses, and I think you're seeing evidence of that,
it's gonna get a little bit more challenging. But good
good day for them today. You can't fault them. You
know how hard these guys work. I mean, I'm sure
they're sick of saying the same stuff every week. We
go into the locker room, we got to decide if
we're in around you know, you see the same kind
of cliches over and over again, and you know, it's
just nice you get to catch your breath a little
(01:43:03):
bit this week. You don't have to face the same things.
You get some some questions about complementing your teammates.
Speaker 3 (01:43:08):
Or hey, what did you see out of Tetrick Wise?
Speaker 2 (01:43:10):
You know, those kind of things that you know are
just some positive reinforcement for the team, which I think
any team at this point in the season, when you've
only won two games up before this game, you need
that kind of thing.
Speaker 4 (01:43:19):
Will the return home, Will the Foxborough Faithful embrace the
Patriots after coming back with a win?
Speaker 2 (01:43:27):
Hey, come see Drake may Man, I mean that's that's
that's I don't know, I have a mission.
Speaker 3 (01:43:32):
I don't think they care that much about that stuff.
